cod9下载采用百度引擎6(Baidu 0)Fresh off their expected Best International Feature nomination and the unexpected but well-deserved Best Director nomination for director Thomas Vinterberg at the Academy Awards, Another Round is back on our list this week as our spotlight pick. We re offering a subtle reminder for those who have yet to watch the dark comedy that will leave you smiling drunkenly through your tears. Mads Mikkelsen turns in a hilarious and tragic performance in what Lewis Knight of the Daily Mirror calls “a riotous and thoughtful study of alcohol consumption that balances comedy and character study, anchored by a versatile lead performance from a top-form Mads Mikkelsen.” We recently sat down with Vinterberg to talk about the film, the drunken boot camp they held, and the incredible dancing scene.Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Mads is just incredible in the film. Can you talk about casting him and how he signed on?Thomas Vinterberg: Mads and I first talked about the idea in 2013. Back then, it was intended to be a tribute to alcohol, but the story wasn’t really formed yet. Mads was intrigued. He was a part of this film from the beginning. In fact, I had those four actors in mind since the early stages of writing. I tend to like that way of working, where I write my scripts for specific actors. It has become a bit more difficult because they’ve gotten rich and more famous, and now want to read a script before they attach. But in this case, actually, Mads and the three others all attached very early in the process, without a script. Their characters were called their respective names right up until the shooting draft. How do you direct people to be drunk? Is there an audition process? Do you need to know about their drinking history prior to signing on?Vinterberg: These four actors are all friends of mine. I’ve known them for years, and we’ve had drinks on various occasions. It’s really difficult for actors to play drunk and do it convincingly, especially capturing the nuanced changes in manner and physicality that accompanies their characters’ escalating inebriation over the course of the film. Prior to the shoot, we watched a lot of YouTube videos of drunk people, and we did some alcohol rehearsals, like a booze boot camp, or whatever you want to call it, in order to figure out the specific behavior of these specific actors at these specific levels of intake. We filmed it, and we had fun with it, but it was also a lot of hard work. As in most cases, where you see something that works naturally on-screen, it’s a result of a lot of hard work. How do you calibrate that? Did they have a BAC number on the call sheet?Vinterberg: No BAC on the call sheet, but a pretty specific idea about how to move forward with each level of inebriation. Once we had the boot camp and had a feel of the different levels and their corresponding actions, we knew where we were heading. We also improvised a bit, of course, in order for it to feel more believable, because sometimes the realistic levels would seem too low for their onscreen behavior.Let s talk about Mads drunkenly dancing on the pier. How did you do it?Vinterberg: Knowing that Mads was a dancer, and knowing that I was making a movie about inspiration and ecstasy and breaking free of your normal, repetitious patterns, I felt it was kind of called for, that he should be dancing at the end. Though, we were all very cautious about it. Particularly Tobias Lindholm and Mads were afraid it would become cliché. We had a dance choreographer for the dance moves, but I, together with Mads, choreographed the to-ing and fro-ing to make it look real. It needed to look like a slice of life. Which is also why the dance is not pitch-perfect. After some hesitation, towards the very end, he lets go entirely. Everyone was so great in that moment. And Mads, of course, in particular, is absolutely outstanding, dancing alone, with no dance-doubles or anything. And yet still behind this cathartic weightless moment, there is this shadow, a sense of this deep tragedy. The film has global appeal. Is that because alcohol (which is thought of differently around the world) is a catalyst, not the crux?Vinterberg: You are right. The film is supposed to be about more than just drinking, of course. Spirit means more than alcohol and is embedded in the “inspiration” too. My wife, who is

With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and here at RT, we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watchlists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you.And the movies are more accessible than ever. Turner Classic Movies may have had to cancel their annual classic film festival this year, and 2018 saw the demise of their classic film app, FilmStruck, but between the newly launched The Criterion Channel streaming app and other streaming services, movie fans still have access to thousands of old Hollywood masterworks.Read below for our list of seminal classic quirky romantic comedies you need to see or revisit. More than simple boy-meets-girl tales, these love stories go far beyond the typical meet-cute and in many cases reflect unique moments in film history.Got other quirky rom-coms you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) 79% (Photo by Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)What is it? Married couple Bob (Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood) attend a life-changing workshop and swiftly adopt the practices they learned, much to the distress of their best friends Ted (Elliott Gould) and Alice (Dyan Cannon). The workshop and its aftermath profoundly change the couples marriages and their feelings for one another. Why you need to see it: Prior to the repeal of the Hays Code – the moral production code that regulated what could be shown on screen – most films could not overtly reference sex. This need to edit out the explicit content was one driver of the tongue-in-cheek sexual innuendo of 1940s and 1950s romantic comedies. After the Hays Code was officially abandoned in 1968, a new wave of sexually explicit comedies flooded cinemas. Bob Carol Ted Alice is one of the first sex comedies and one of the best. No longer did screenwriters have to dance around the subject; director and co-writer Paul Mazursky could, in fact, address the elephant in the room. Funnily enough, having your first film score four Oscar nods and make bank at the box office ruins Hollywood, according to Mazursky; the director joked later that the film was almost too perfect, and therefore its success could never be replicated.Watch it if you like: Obvious Child, Seems Like Old Times, Chances Are, Chasing AmyWhere to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app, or rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.It Happened One Night (1934) 99% What is it? An heiress on the run (Claudette Colbert) joins forces with a man she meets, but little does she know he is actually a reporter in need of a story. Why you need to see it: One of only three films to ever pull a clean sweep of the five major Oscar categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress), It Happened One Night is one of the truly great romantic comedies. The movie combines Clark Gable s undeniable charm, Claudette Colbert s comedic timing, and the feel-good filmmaking of Frank Capra. Our only question is, what has taken you so long to see it?Watch it if you like: Roman Holiday, Almost Famous, The Proposal, Annie Hall, You ve Got Mail, Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist, Working GirlWhere to watch: Rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Sabrina (1954) 93% What is it? Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn) is a lovestruck chauffeur s daughter who nurses an impossible crush for David (William Holden), the youngest son of the family that employs her father. When Sabrina returns home after years in Paris, the newly engaged David is suddenly ready to romance her and dump his fiancée – something that David s older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) is determined to prevent. Why you need to see it: This is a must-watch because of Bogie, Hepburn, Holden, and writer-director Billy Wilder. Audrey Hepburn was the perfect choice for the stylish Cinderella love interest and rightfully earned the Best Actress nomination she received for the film. Nominated for six Oscars and taking home the prize for Best Costumes, Sabrina is an early example of a film whose cast was fleshed out with A-list talent and Oscar winners. Bogart, who replaced Wilder s first choice of Cary Grant, was arguably one of the biggest stars on the planet, and here he was cast alongside Hepburn and Holden, both of whom had taken home Best Acting Oscars in 1953. This was the kind of dream-team casting not often replicated. Bogart was never sure he was the right choice for Linus, but his put-off posturing both on and off set served his performance well.Watch it if you like: While You Were Sleeping, Pretty Woman, Some Like it Hot, She s All That, The Princess Diaries, Roman HolidayWhere to watch: Available to stream on Crackle, or buy or rent it at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Pillow Talk (1959) 93% What is it? Marriage-minded interior decorator Jan Morrow (Doris Day) must share a phone line with her playboy neighbor, Brad Allen (Rock Hudson). When Brad sees the beauty on the other end of his line he decides to woo Jan under a false identity and inadvertently falls in love during the process. Why you need to see it: Pillow Talk was a risqué project for the squeaky clean Doris Day and Rock Hudson, but turned out to be the first of several successful films the pair made together. The clever innuendos peppered throughout the Oscar-winning script were, in fact, scandalous by 1950s film standards; it was testament to the large screenwriting team that they got past the censor board with the hilarity still intact. Compare it to Bob Carol Ted Alice, and you can acutely appreciate how much progress was made in just one decade. Watching it with a modern eye is a bit like watching classic anti-drug films like Reefer Madness.Watch it if you like: 40 days and 40 Nights, Two Weeks Notice, Never Been Kissed, 10 Things I Hate About YouWhere to watch: Streaming now for free on Hoopla Digital, or rent or boy it at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Shampoo (1975) 62% (Photo by Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)What is it? A playboy hairdresser (Warren Beatty) enlists the husband of one of his rich female lovers/clients when he seeks a loan for his salon. A series of events then ensue that places the hairdresser at a party with his girlfriend, her husband, and several ex-lovers – including the one that got away. Why you need to see it: The Owl and the Pussycat and Bob Carole Ted Alice loosened the cap off cinematic sexual oppression, but after the success of X-rated films like Deep Throat and Midnight Cowboy, the initial shock of sex had lost its luster by the 1970s. In 1975, a fresh approach was needed to wow audiences, and Warren Beatty provided it with his satirical sex comedy Shampoo – though many at the time did not appreciate it. A sex comedy where nothing happens and *spoiler alert* no one falls in love? It is easy to understand why audiences and many contemporary critics dismissed the film. The laughs are tempered by bleakness and the film ends up saddened by its characters awkwardness, wrote Time Out London. However, on a second look, you can appreciate how George s womanizing ways were a direct product of the 1960s free love movement, and the film offered a clever depiction of the 1970s hangover that much of America was suffering after all of that 60s excess. Beatty s script, which he co-wrote with Robert Towne, acutely understood the character of George and his sexual apathy.Watch it if you like: American Pie, Three s Company, Wedding Crashers, The Birdcage, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Don Jon, Trainwreck. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel, or rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu. His Girl Friday (1940) 99% What is it? No-nonsense news editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) has only a few hours to prevent his star reporter – and ex-wife – Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) from quitting the paper to marry a simple-minded insurance salesman she met on vacation. After a convicted murderer escapes from jail, Burns is thrust into a race against time to stop Hildy – and secure the exclusive story. Why you need to see it: If Capra s It Happened One Night firmly established the fast-talking screwball comedy, His Girl Friday might have perfected it. It Happened One Night is a near-perfect romantic comedy, but director Howard Hawks took over-talking and quick dialogue to new heights with His Girl Friday, establishing a style that has been replicated everywhere from the Gilmore Girls to Glengarry Glen Ross.  You don t know whether you have been laughing or having your ears boxed, wrote New York Times film critic Frank S. Nugent at the time of its release.Watch it if you like: Gilmore Girls, Obvious Child, Silver Linings Playbook, Raising Arizona, The Newsroom, MoonlightingWhere to watch: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Vudu, available to rent or buy from FandangoNOW, Google Play, and  iTunes.Death Is a Woman (1967) 82%(Photo by Courtesy of Criterion Collection. )What is it? An exotic dancer wants a child and her current lover is not willing – but his best friend might be tempted to fill in for him.Why you need to see it: We could go on and on about how A Woman is a Woman is a clever rebuttal to the American musical comedy. We could talk about Jean-Luc Godard and his visionary camera work and shooting style. We could talk about French New Wave or French sex comedies. But the best reason to see the film is a woman, and that woman is the incomparable Anna Karina. Just gaze into her eyes and let her performance hypnotize you.Watch it if you like: The Love Witch, Bridget Jones Diary, She s the One, Cleo from 5 to 7, Easy AWhere to watch: Now streaming on the Starz app, or rent or buy from Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Barefoot in the Park (1967) 85%What is it? A conservative attorney (Robert Redford) rushes into marriage with a carefree woman (Jane Fonda). Realizing they are very different people, the young couple struggle to stay in love and avoid divorce. Why you need to see it: It would be criminal not include a Neil Simon film on any list of great classic romantic comedies. Writer of The Goodbye Girl, The Heartbreak Kid, and Seems Like Old Times, Simon was a master of opposites-attract love stories. Jane Fonda plays the free-spirited Corie to seductive perfection, and Robert Redford manages to stifle all his natural charms to embody the stuffed shirt, Paul. It s a love story where the question is never, Will these two fall in love?  The only question in Barefoot in Park is, Can they stay together? The film was not universally loved upon release, but we tend to agree with Time Magazine, which wrote at the time: Simon has taken a plot as bland as a potato, sliced it into thin bits – and made it as hard to resist as potato chips. Watch it if you like: Dharma Greg, My Fair Lady, Shakespeare in Love, Pretty Woman, Moonstruck, The Way We WereWhere to watch: Now streaming on the Starz app, or rent or purchase on Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Looking for more movies and shows to watch? GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY DAVE BAUTISTA IS ALSO UNIVERSE S MOST WANTED (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)We still don t when exactly director James Gunn and Marvel Studios will be able to reunite again for a third Guardians of the Galaxy (definitely don t expect it before 2023), but one of that film s stars is striking out on his own in a new sci-fi fantasy. Dave Bautista (A.K.A. Drax) will produce and star in an ambitious sci-fi action movie called Universe s Most Wanted, in which he will play an intergalactic peacekeeper who teams up with the son of a small town sheriff when a spaceship carrying the universe’s most wanted and dangerous criminals crash lands in their backyard. If that premise sounds familiar, that may be because it is extremely similar to the 1986 sci-fi cult favorite Critters, except, of course, the aliens in Universe s Most Wanted will probably be very different. Universe s Most Wanted will be directed by Brad Peyton, who has previously worked three times with one of Dave Bautista s former wrestling co-stars, Dwayne Johnson, on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rotten at 45%), San Andreas (Rotten at 50%), and the video game movie Rampage (51%, Peyton s highest RT score). On an Apple device? Well before there was a script for Marvel’s Avengers, it was clear Clint Barton would be a member of the team. Marvel Studios made a deal with actor Jeremy Renner in advance of the film and he made his debut in Thor as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with a singular talent for archery. More details about him would have to wait, though, for Avengers: Age of Ultron, as the first film was already stuffed with story threads from the other heroes films. Nevertheless, Renner bided his time as a Marvel guest character, knowing a starring role would eventually materialize.Meanwhile, back in the Marvel Comics universe, Clint was enjoying a new inrush of fans as he starred in a Hawkeye series from writer Matt Fraction and principal artist David Aja. The stylish, indie-tinged series set out to reveal what Clint does when he’s not with the Avengers. The answer, as it turned out, was as eventful as any mission with the team. He inherited a building, had to save it from a crime family with a love of tracksuits, adopted a dog, and worked with Young Avengers Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, to survive the impossibility of existence and drink coffee. These two strands of Hawkeye’s existence are about to collide in Disney+’s upcoming Hawkeye series. As the recently uploaded trailer for the program reveals, Renner’s version of Clint will be meeting foes (and allies) in a tale Disney and Marvel are positioning as the feel-good superhero action series of the holidays. So let’s take a look at what we know about the series so far and determine just how much more like Hawkeye Clint can get.Clint’s Weird Holiday(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Based on the trailer, it’s clear the story will be set during the 2023 holidays, a handful of months after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Clint brings his children to New York for this special trip because, as he puts it, he’s “making up for lost time.” So, clearly, both he and the kids are still adjusting to the reality of the Blip and the five years Thanos (Josh Brolin) stole from them. But soon, Clint learns someone else has become Ronin, the costumed persona he adopted during those five years of darkness. As glimpsed in Endgame, Ronin was a ruthless and relentless scourge to the criminal underworld. His campaign was so intense, in fact, that few of the surviving Avengers believed Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) could bring him in from the cold. And, clearly, some of that past will catch up with him even if the person in the Ronin costume is Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), the self-professed world’s greatest archer. Of course, she has problems of her own – otherwise, why dress up as Ronin in the first place? Based on the Young Avengers and Hawkeye comics, we expect some of those problems will be very close to home. Also, according to comments made by Renner and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige ahead of the show s production, Clint will mentor Kate in some capacity. The meeting of Hawkeyes, meanwhile, will lead to plenty of action, some silliness, and (we hope) the best look at Clint’s life outside of Avenging yet seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.A Return To Old New York(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Of course, no Hawkeye series based on the Fraction and Aja comic book would be complete without New York and the trailer makes it clear most of the series will stick to the five boroughs. For close watchers of the MCU’s ever-evolving landscape, getting a look at the city ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home will be of particular importance. For one thing, there will be Easter eggs like the Rogers musical on Broadway, but we imagine the series will also contain a few echoes to Endgame’s nearly deserted New York and offer some details about how that desolate New York reshaped itself into the one glimpsed in The Falcon and the Winter Solider and Spider-Man: Far From Home. As it happens, there is room here to make pointed references to The Daily Bugle and the Global Repatriation Council. Also, the glimpses of Manhattan in the Hawkeye trailer sure remind us of the same island featured in the Netflix Marvel shows. Hope springs eternal that it may mean the return of a Wilson Fisk or Jessica Jones – even if just as mentioned characters somewhere along the way. Of course, only rumors suggest such a thing occurring.A True Cast Of Characters(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)As mentioned earlier, Renner returns as Clint. Or, more specifically, the MCU version of Clint. He differs from the comic book character in a couple of key ways. For one, MCU Clint is a devoted husband and father. Back in the comics, Clint’s love life is the butt of many, many jokes as he’s romanced a number of women over the years (even married at least one person), but always screws up his relationships. And as for kids, well, there is an unfortunate story there, but the Clint of the Fraction and Aja comics was in no place to be a father.Curiously though, the trailer hints at MCU Clint accruing some of the comic book character’s energy during the five years his family ceased to exist. We also expect Clint to reckon with being a remorseless killer for much of that time and discover what it means to reintegrate into a family who experienced none of the turmoil during the Blip.Joining him on this adventure is Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. It remains to be seen how she will differ from her comic book counterpart, but we will say this: she is Hawkeye. Like comic book Clint, things never quite go her way even though she is a more successful at adulting. And thanks to a story written by Fraction and drawn by Annie Wu – and expanded upon in a subsequent series by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero – Kate has a wonderful, down-on-her-luck private detective vibe. And with Steinfeld in the part, she might be the most significant addition to the MCU roster from the Disney+ programs so far. Although, we freely admit we may be biased.(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)The series will also feature Vera Farmiga as Kate’s mother Eleanor – a key clue into Kate’s story as her mother is quite significant in her comic book storylines Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez (the deaf assassin known as Echo); Fra Fee as the mercenary Kazi; Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, a man with key ties to Clint s past; Zahn McClarnon as Maya’s father William Lopez; and Brian d Arcy James in an undisclosed role. Ava Russo, Ben Sakamoto, and Cade Woodward also return as Clint’s children. And perhaps most importantly, a golden retriever named Jolt takes on the iconic role of Lucky the Pizza Dog. Hopes are already riding high that an episode will adapt the issue of Hawkeye which is seen from Lucky’s point of view. Also, Florence Pugh is expected to turn up at some point as Yelena Belova. If you recall her final scene in Black Widow, Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) points her in Clint’s direction as the person most responsible for Natasha’s death. We expect that confrontation will be crucial to the story and, hopefully, lead to at least one reveal about the Contessa’s plans.Behind The Bows(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Hawkeye’s head writer is Jonathan Igla, a veteran of Bridgerton and Sorry for Your Loss. Other writer’s include Katie Mathewson and Tanner Bean. On the directing side, episodes will be helmed by Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood (who go by the directing name Bert and Bertie) and Comrade Detective’s Rhys Thomas, a group of talent who suggest Hawkeye will be one of the lighter Marvel shows, which is in keeping with the Fraction-written comic book. The source material still hit on some serious topics, though, and saw Clint’s hearing loss take on a new prominence. Set photos from the series suggest MCU Clint will lose some of his hearing during the program, and a few shots from the trailer reveal what appears to be a hearing aid in Clint s ear.Filming took place in New York and Georgia across the 2020 holiday and into Spring of 2021. Photos of Steinfeld in costume circulated widely one week before Marvel confirmed her involvement in the program. Subsequent pictures also confirmed Fraction’s Tracksuit Mafia, so expect the utterance “bro” to get stuck in your head.Taking Aim In NovemberThe six-episode series debuts November 24 on Disney+ with episodes streaming weekly through December 29. And as it is part of Marvel Studios second TV show round, it is unclear if the program will continue for a second season, but we can easily imagine Kate moving to the West Coast and becoming a P.I. in Season 2.On an Apple device?

Addison Wright’s Hiplet: Because We Can is part of the Scene In Color Film Series, presented by Target, which shines a light on incredible filmmaking talent. As part of the series, three emerging filmmakers will receive mentorship from producer Will Packer, and their films are available to watch on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieClips Indie Channel, Peacock, and the NBC App.They have the “sexy walk;” “the pretzel;” “the dougie;” “the Vivian.” These aren’t 1950s innuendoes. They’re the dance moves performed by a special Chicago-based ballet company. Founded by Homer Hans Bryant, hiplet is a combination of hip-hop and traditional ballet performed to dizzying, intoxicating effect by a collection of incredible local dancers. Director Addison Wright, another Chicago native, decided to make a film about these viral sensations after discovering the troupe on Instagram. His eight-minute documentary short, Hiplet: Because We Can, was an Official Selection at the 2020 South by Southwest Film Festival, later became a Vimeo Staff pick, and is now part of the Scene in Color Film Series. Wright’s film, titled after the dance, fuses together a choreographed music video feel with a precise documentary style for a lively exploration of this new invigorating movement style. Though the performers’ movements speak for themselves — their swaggering strides texture their powerful, beautiful Black forms, mesmerizing the frame with an undaunted spirit — Wright interviews them, too. The ebullient ballerinas explain the pushback they’ve experienced in a classically white-defined world for their unique artistic identity, their varying body types, and their Blackness. In Hiplet, Wright casts an immersive and empathetic lens toward these talented women. He demonstrates a nimbleness in his filmmaking, capturing the balletic patterns of the dancers while oscillating between striking colorful compositions and equally magnetic black-and-white filmed interviews. Hiplet is not just an exhilarating introduction to a new, evolving ballet style, but a perfect launching pad displaying Wright’s fresh, assured voice. Here, Wright talks to Robert Daniels, a Chicago-based Tomatometer-approved Top Critic. Robert Daniels for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you first get into filmmaking?Addison Wright: I grew up during the 90s, so I was glued to the TV watching MTV and BET. I ve always been mesmerized by music videos and by directors like Hype Williams and Spike Jonze, and Little X. So early on I knew I had a passion for it. I went to Simeon High School in Chicago, where I played football all four years. I ended up getting a scholarship to Delaware State University. I played football there, and my major was TV production. I didn t have a camera in high school or anything like that, but once I got to college I realized this was something I wanted to go after. I ended up getting hurt around my junior year in college. So I didn t play football, but the team would have me around so I traveled and filmed practice and the games. When there wasn t any practice or a game, I would borrow the camera and film music videos around campus. That s when I got into learning how to build narratives within music videos. So I was taking some of the stuff that I learned in some of my classes, and applying it to my videos. That s where my passion started.(Photo by Addison Wright)Daniels: Where and when did the idea for Hiplet first form?Wright: I was on Instagram and on my Explore page I saw these Black ballerinas doing ballet a bit differently. So I clicked on it and I heard the music and saw them in the dance studio and thought these girls are dope. I was scrolling up and began seeing them again and again. So I researched online about the Hiplet ballerinas and saw some of the commercials that they were in like Old Navy commercials and Mercedes-Benz and featured in Japan and some other places. Then I saw they were based here in Chicago and I was like, whoa this is a story that needs to be told. Initially the concept was me doing an entire music video of them. I wanted to shoot it in Chicago’s South Shore Cultural Center because that was a white-only establishment a hundred years ago. And I want to place Black girls in this beautiful cultural center, and just let them do their thing in a place they wouldn t have been able to a hundred years ago. But once we got the cost back for how much it was going to be to rent that space, I knew we couldn’t do that.So we ended up finding a gym on the south side, the Grand Ballroom, which is on 64th and Cottage Grove. You won’t even notice it if you drive or walk past, but if you look up you can see the beautiful terracotta. The story grew by me going, at least once a week, to the studio to film the girls and watch them rehearse and practice just to see how they move around and to see their personalities so I would know different angles and areas to pay attention to. Homer, he s the founder of Hiplet, and I were having a casual conversation and he told me how much these girls go through. Whenever they post something online, people are making fun of them but those same people are emulating what they do. It comes from within the dance community. People from different races look at them and see how they aren t doing traditional ballet, so they talk about them. So I decided to give the girls the floor: We ll film them, but we ll also let them talk about the adversity they often face. That s what kinda changed the path of the film being a music video. That s what made me realize how I wanted it to be a short and a documentary, but with the feel of a music video.Daniels: How long was the shoot?Wright: The shoot was about a 12-hour day. We started loading around eight in the morning and we wrapped with the girls around eight o clock at night. It was a bit longer for us, but the girls were there all day. It was a lot of rehearsing. When the girls showed up, they knew what they needed and we knew what we needed to do as far as setting up lights and blocking. Daniels: I want to get back to the blocking. I think what s so great about your film is you can feel the energy of the dancing. How did you get to that point where you got the right angles to bring the live energy onto camera?Wright: My DP, Dan Frantz, and I would go to the studio where girls would be rehearsing and we would film certain parts of the performance. That was a month out before we actually filmed. We would sit down and figure out the best angle for where the camera needed to be and lighting diagrams. We also went to the ballroom and took some pictures. I knew where I wanted to place the girls. I knew some of the angles that I wanted to hit just based off of their choreography. But it was a collaboration between him and me. We were rushing against the clock to get certain things because we only had the location for one day. But my goal was to really capture the energy of the ballerinas. Make sure they re making eye contact. Anytime the camera came around, I made sure that I told them to interact with the camera. If it s near you, look down at the lens, look through it just like you re on stage and somebody makes eye contact with you in a crowd. The camera is the crowd.Daniels: And now your film is part of the Scene in Color Film Series. How did you hear about the opportunity and what drew you to it?Wright: It s funny, I didn t know anything about it until they reached out to me. And I was completely blown away. Even when I talk about it right now, I m still in shock because it s all just surreal. They said they saw the film and they really loved it. And I was like: Me, really? That s dope that they love the film. About three weeks later they gave me the details and I found it incredible. I remember making the film public in February on Vimeo and it ended up becoming a Vimeo staff pick and then went viral. A month after that was when NBC reached out to speak with me.Daniels: How are you feeling about having a producer like Will Packer as a mentor?Wright: It s an incredible feeling having someone who is a powerhouse within the industry and within the Black community as a mentor. Even hearing myself say that, it sounds unreal. Just to be able to have opportunities to pick his brain and to have the opportunity to ask what to do in this situation, in certain situations, or do you think this is a good idea, can only help my career in an extremely positive way. He may be able to give some insight from his experience. He may be able to point me into a direction that may give me more exposure. I m extremely excited to be able to just chat with him.Daniels: What guidance or advice has Will given you so far?Wright: I asked him what s his favorite film that he’s ever done, the one that left him with the most memories. He said Stomp the Yard. In a nutshell, he wanted to do that film to provide inspiration to people. Being able to hear that from him let me know I m doing the right thing. My goal as a filmmaker is to inspire people through the lens. And if it can t change the world, at least I’ll open one person’s eyes. Will also said he enjoyed the film and I was where I was supposed to be. To hear that as an up-and-coming filmmaker, as a Black filmmaker, you know, to hear from Will Packer that I m where I m supposed to be, it s extremely crazy, man. It floored me. That solidified me as a filmmaker in my eyes and in my heart.Daniels: What do you hope people take from Hiplet?Wright: I m born and raised in Chicago, and Chicago always gets a negative light put on us. I want people to be able to see these Black girls on TV, on their phones, and on their computers to see how, number one, beautiful they are; number two, how they re taking ballet in a totally different direction by not changing ballet but by adding a twist to it. I want it to be motivational for Black boys and girls by seeing someone that looks like you, that s doing something that s changing the world of ballet by shaking things up.See more shorts and meet more filmmakers from the Scene in Color Film Series.
