Bay Street in Melbourne stood in for Wilshire.“Destroying Los Angeles has kind of become an important part of cinema over the last however many years, series creator David Appelbaum added. For us, the pleasure is not so much about seeing our city destroyed, but about creating an exciting action-adventure story and an emotional story at its heart.”2. The more they explore, the more dangers they find including hostile terrain and primal animals. You put on the silk blouse in 30-degree weather and say here’s who I am.”3. His medical experience will come in handy when survivors are injured.“I think every sinkhole needs a doctor,” Seda said. “So I think Dr. Sam brings a pretty, simply in the medical field of that nature. And he’s a former Navy SEAL so he has some pretty good instincts as to how to survive.”Ty Coleman (Chiké Okonkwo) is a psychiatrist, in case any of the survivors need therapy down there. Frankly, Ty may be in need of some emotional support himself.“Mental health has, of course during the pandemic, become such a priority and has rightfully so been pushed to the forefront more than before,” Okonkwo said. “He’s a man who has studied the brain, and we’ll find out that that’s relevant in lots of ways. He’s a man who understands the pressures that humans are under.”4. TY WAS SOMEWHERE IMPORTANT BEFORE THE SINKHOLE(Photo by Sarah Enticknap/NBC)Okonkwo added that Ty’s whereabouts prior to the sinkhole would be important. The viewer meets Eve, Sam and their kids in their cars when the sinkhole occurs. Okonkwo said you’ll find out where Ty was later in the season.“Ty’s been traveling from west to east on Wilshire from a particular appointment which will become relevant later on,” Okonkwo said.5. She and her father, Gavin (Eoin Macken) seek answers to bring their family home.“We have more of the kind of Dan Brown, Da Vinci Code, Indiana Jones kind of action at the top,” Macken said.Wyndbrandt elaborated a bit on the Dan Brown analogy.“We wanted to have fun in that Dan Brown kind of Three Days of the Condor–esque thriller; put the government in a position where they know information that we don’t,” Wyndbrandt said. “He’s talking about the Dan Brown of it all where he has to uncover clues that there are people who know answers that will not only shed light on where his family is, but why he has a connection to this place.”6. GAVIN HARRIS SEES THINGS OTHERS CAN’T(Photo by Sarah Enticknap/NBC)Even before the sinkhole opens, the viewer meets Gavin in a therapy session, dealing with visions he’s seen since an airplane accident he had as a former pilot. Once the Harrises and other families fall into the sinkhole, Gavin’s visions start to connect to their predicament.“That actually goes to places that I don’t think you’re going to expect because I didn’t even expect it,” Macken said. “Fundamentally important to Gavin’s character is being able to have that redemptive arc, both as a father and as a professional as a pilot. And also being able to use those negative experiences he had to try and finally understand himself and get his family back.”7. THERE ARE REAL ANIMALS ON THE SET(Photo by NBC)Down below, Eve and the other survivors run into vicious primal animals. La Brea keeps the actors safe from those and many are created with visual effects. However, Zea said there are some bening animals on the set.“I got to hang out with a rabbit,” Zea said.There are other animals you won’t even get to see on La Brea. Although they film in Australia, the show isn’t set in Australia so they have to keep the native species out of frame. Jack Martin, who plays Eve’s son Josh, described some of the creatures roaming the set.“There’s a bunch of real animals both in the show and also running around in the background when we’re not shooting,” Martin said. “There are kangaroos on every set, I think.”8. ZYRA GORECKI IS AN AMPUTEE LIKE HER CHARACTER IZZY(Photo by Sarah Enticknap/NBC)Izzy has a prosthetic leg, and it’s a plot point in the show. Eve describes the accident that caused Izzy to lose her leg in the story. In real life, Gorecki wears a prosthetic leg herself.“David is absolutely amazing when it comes to writing and we had quite a few conversations about what it is like to be an amputee,” Gorecki said. “He would bring that into the script. Also being able to play an amputee character as an amputee is an honor truly. I think it’s fun to play characters as an amputee that aren’t necessarily an amputee, but also for them to have that representation, it does make you feel very good. To be able to look on screen and be able to go, ‘I look like that. That’s what I look like. That means that I can do it too.’ It’s a big deal.”9. LOVE IS IN THE AIR UNDER LA BREA(Photo by Sarah Enticknap/NBC)Both Sam and Eve have teenage kids in the sinkhole with them. While the parents are trying to find food and shelter, Josh and Riley (Veronica St. Clair), Sam’s daughter, may just hit it off.“I think while there is crazy action in this show and there’s a lot of wild plot events, I think what makes it really good is the character relationships,” Martin said. “I don’t want to spoil anything, but you’ll definitely get to see that play out.”Zea said she understood how the kids took advantage of their situation.“What a great place to get into some mischief,” Zea said. “ My parents are really distracted with survival, so let’s go make out. ”10. There was plenty for the actors to do themselves.“We got thrown in, literally thrown in at the deep end from the very start,” Okonkwo said. “From episode one, it’s this kinetic, high-octane adventure, and it doesn’t let up quite frankly. It keeps on going, especially for myself, Jon, and Natalie Zea. Our characters are really in it for the first two or three episodes.”Seda said he was surprised the action was so immediate. He thought he’d have a grace period to get warmed up.“We’re just physically going through a lot of things I don’t think many of us really expected we were going to be doing right from the start,” Seda said. “So it’s demanding in its own way but it’s really exciting. Plus, who can forget the iconic shot of Hayek and Banderas coolly walking away from a giant fireball?It Turned Antonio Banderas into an Action StarBanderas exudes star power and charisma from the moment he walks on-screen. While it may be most evident in the aforementioned slow-mo walk away from the explosion with Hayek, his unshakable bravado is present in almost every frame. Stepping out of the shadows for his first bar fight, he makes an imposing impression from the get-go, yet one that changes as the audience learns more about him. He’s not a cold-blooded killer like his enemies, as he looks after a guitar-carrying kid caught in the town’s drug trade. He s capable of being vulnerable, funny, and flirty with Carolina, quickly initiating a romance just hours after they meet. And in the face of danger, he’s an impossible and unstoppable force, with Banderas (and his stunt team) quickly moving through the paces of intense fight choreography like pros. At the time, Banderas was perhaps best known to U.S. viewers for his roles as a love interest in movies like Philadelphia and Interview with the Vampire, but Desperado helped Banderas step out into a new light, one that later led him to make movies like The Mask of Zorro (and its sequel), The 13th Warrior, the Spy Kids franchise, Haywire, and The Expendables 3,  among others. Both Banderas and Hayek would also reprise their roles in 2003’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico.The Cast Is Full of Faces You ll RecognizeDesperado features a number of cameos, like Steve Buscemi, who introduces the legend of El Mariachi to a bar full of nervous listeners. Another face you may recognize is Quentin Tarantino’s as a loudmouthed delivery man who meets a gruesome end. With a shared love of exploitation B-movies, Rodriguez and Tarantino would later work together on an ambitious double feature, Grindhouse, as an homage to the era and contribute shorts to Four Rooms with Anders. A number of soon-to-be Rodriguez regulars also trace their collaborations back to Desperado, including Cheech Marin, who would go on to play Uncle Felix in Rodriguez’s Spy Kids, and a short-haired Danny Trejo, whose appearance in Desperado as a deadly, knife-wielding assassin seems to be the basis for his evolution into his most famous character, Machete. Carlos Gallardo, the original El Mariachi from Rodriguez’s debut, also appears as one of the other musicians with a case full of weapons in time for a big showdown.Los Lobos Delivers an Award-Winning Soundtrack(Photo by Everett Collection)Back in the late 80s and early 90s, the Chicano rock band Los Lobos was one of the most famous Spanish-language groups to break into the mainstream. Fashioning a sound that melded rock and blues with traditional Mexican music like cumbia and norteño, Los Lobos was fresh, unique, and exciting. Their chart-topping 1987 cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” for the movie of the same name put them on airwaves across the world, and when it came time for Rodriguez to pick the music to accompany his gun-toting musician on his quest for vengeance, there was no better choice.Los Lobos added guitar-fueled segues that propel the action forward, making every fight scene feel more epic in scope, and rooting the story in a Mexican-American soundscape, bringing to life the sounds of a border town where American tourists dip into sketchy dive bars run by a cartel. In an early scene, Banderas performs Los Lobos’ Mariachi Suite, which sets up his character’s story and who he’s going to face off against in the movie. For the man who came to define a certain brand of whip-smart and incredulous after-dark political commentary – one that has proliferated on American screens in the last decade – his second film as writer and director puts him on familiar ground and sees him firing at familiar targets. There are absurd political operatives, here played by Steve Carell on the Left and Rose Byrne on the Right, and sharp attacks on the influence of money in politics, with outside dollars and media vans swarming a small Wisconsin mayoral election that goes suddenly national. There’s also a good and decent guy there, too, smack dab in the middle of things, staring at the circus surrounding him with increasing bemusement. This time it’s not Stewart himself wearing that bemused grin, but farmer and military veteran Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper), who is roped into running for mayor on the Democratic ticket when a video of him speaking at a local council meeting goes viral.Ahead of the movie’s digital release, Rotten Tomatoes spoke with Stewart about why he decided to pick up the pen and camera again; how Irresistible is in some was similar to his first film, the Iran-set Rosewater, about a journalist captured by the country s authoritarian regime; and why his new satire takes aim at the system rather than either party or a politician specifically. Oh, and we also asked about The Faculty, because this might have been our only chance…Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: It s been almost six years since you released your first film, the drama Rosewater – what made you want to step back into the writer s and director s chair now and for a project that is so tonally different?Jon Stewart: Irresistible is probably more akin to the things I m used to doing. The Rosewater project was such an anomaly, spawned from such unfortunate circumstances. (Obviously, there was going to be no sequel, hopefully… I didn t get anybody else arrested by an authoritarian regime.) And I was kind of so used to just commenting on the weather of a political system, I guess I thought it might be interesting [with Irresistible] to try to take up a wider view, sort of a climate view, as to what it is about the system – outside of the partisanship aspect – that drives it.There is a connection between both films – they re both about elections, one happening in an authoritarian regime and the other being overtaken by money. What is it about elections and the election process that fascinates you?Stewart: Well, they’re really the levers for the direction that the country is going in. The defining aspect of any real democracy is how well it represents its citizens and how well it responds to their actual needs, and if the system becomes very perverted, that can steer the outcomes in a negative direction. That was the whole thing of the American Revolution. Which is why it s so interesting in this moment now, where, you know, some people see the BLM movement as “too much” – yet you saw the Revolution because, like, how much our tea cost. I think when you compare that [issue] to labor and segregation, there’s a pretty good case to be upset. But yeah, it just seems like we ve encountered a system that s relatively unaccountable to the outcomes of the people on the ground.You ve said that part of the germination of the idea for Irresistible was the John Ossoff campaign in the special election for Georgia s 6th Congressional District in 2017 – where it became hugely nationalized and money poured in from everywhere. What was it about that particular moment that stood out for you as being problematic, but also ripe for satire?Stewart: I think it s the cyclical nature of it. We kept getting these corrupted outcomes, you know, whether it was the Iraq War government decisions and trickle-down economics that are clearly not having the effect of helping. I kind of viewed it all as a pendulum swing; I mean, Trump s so far in this other direction. I just kept trying to figure out how there is common-sense legislation that the overwhelming majority of Americans support and yet it gets no traction – and why is that? What are the factors that form this barrier around actually doing things that are responsive [to people s needs]?It felt like this kind of machinery had grown up around elections. Like, the money had gotten so big and, between the media, all that, the system is incentivized for that kind of money. It s the military industrial complex, when Eisenhower was talking about it; it begins to have a will of its own. It tends to self-propagate. Systems like that don’t generally dismantle themselves; you have to find a way to reform it. This is not, by a long shot, obviously, the only problem facing us, but I just thought it might be interesting to try to look at it as a system.(Photo by © Focus Features)One of the things that might surprise viewers when they watch Irresistible is that it is a critique of the whole system rather than a partisan critique. You ll have people who will expect Jon Stewart to attack the conservatives, but no one is really spared from the fire here. Stewart: You know, I think people know where my sympathies lie, but I do think that that is kind of the point of it – that if you want to use the system s energy against it, if you try to land that fish, you got to have the right bait, and the bait is something that plays into their business model. And that s their business model. The business model is that content, and keeping it going.There s a tendency to look at that and go, “Oh, you re sitting both sides of the fence.” I m not saying that at all. What I m saying is, whoever they are, are performing in a Superfund site, and cleaning up the Superfund site isn’t a fix necessarily, but it will allow you to see the real divisions between those groups more easily. It s sort of that right now the system obscures those differences to some extent, because it’s so noisy.One of the movie s standout scenes sees the candidate traveling from rural Wisconsin to the big city for a fancy fundraising dinner, where he has to kind of sell himself to rich donors. Was that drawn from scenes that you ve witnessed in real life? And how much did you have to exaggerate – if at all? Stewart: That scene is the thesis of the movie. That gives the movie away, I think, in my mind. You could save it for the end, I guess, but the hope is that [Hastings speech at the fundraiser] is the speech that you go back to, or a little bit after the whole thing you think about and kind of go, “Oh, that s what he felt.” And that is based on a friend of mine, who s run for Congress in West Virginia and had to come up to New York City to fundraise in a town house in Greenwich Village, and just what an incredibly peculiar night that was.Obviously, [the scene in the film] is a fairly heightened version of that, but it s similar. You know, coming up and convincing people that have nothing to do with you, and taking the time and the energy to raise this amount of money. The money that you’re raising is just part of it, it’s the influence that it buys, and the time that you have to spend doing it. We re talking the day after Gary Chambers Jr. went viral in a video speaking at a school board meeting, and obviously at a time when cell phone footage has opened up a lot of people to the reality of racial violence in the country. How do you think cell phones and the fact that these moments can travel so quickly, and anyone can be a citizen journalist, is shaping politics?Stewart: That s really the crux of it, and you know, oddly enough, then you go back to Rosewater. The final image of that film is the boy holding up his cell phone. It’s the great equalizer, and that s because nobody believes the dispossessed and the disenfranchised. They don t have the lobbyists and they don t have the power behind them. But they do have the ability to capture an image that encapsulates the difficulties of the lives that they live in their moment. You know, it s proof. It s like when someone has been in jail for years, and then all of a sudden, 30 years later, DNA technology comes out and there’s new evidence. The cell phone is a weapon to some extent. It exposes the anguish and the situation that they found themselves in for years but nobody would listen to.I think it s an incredibly powerful tool. And again, it s competing in a sea of a lot of other nonsense. And people try to obscure the truth, too. All these things come with caveats, and that s why I think I get so frustrated with the media, for instance, because they play such an important role in culture. And if they become a sort of information laundering system, which is sort of what it is now, we need this really important tool for contextualizing what we see. Earning that authority feels important.(Photo by © Focus Features)You re asked a lot about whether you wish you still had your old media platform, and you recently told the New York Times,  My efficacy for that kind of conversation has passed. Can you unpack what you mean by that?Stewart: It’s hard to remain creative and relevant. One of the difficulties of a topical show is that battle between making it sustainable and repeatable, but also inspired and creative. So you have to set up systems; it’s a factory, but it’s an evolving factory. And I think we spent a lot of time doing that. I think the show evolved in the types of voices, in the way that we did things, the technology. It evolved over those 16 years.But I think once you stop being able to surprise yourself, and once you stop being able to find the right places to bring your oxygen to it People get accustomed to my brain. And my brain felt that, It s done. It felt like it had run its course – that I couldn t evolve it in a way that I thought was meaningful enough to justify staying. And I didn t think having the same conversation over and over again was interesting.You know, you want it to be entertaining as well and I just thought that by that point, the audience and the show deserved a host that could then take the baton and infuse it with a different point of view and more oxygen and begin that sort of process again of renewal. I ve been really gratified to see how well they re doing and how impressive it is from the launch. But I don t ever feel like, “Why didn’t I stay?” I completed the race and was ready to do other things.Before they kick me off, I m going to change gears completely and ask about a movie, which is actually one of my favorite movies and which you were in: The Faculty.Stewart: Oh my God. That s hilarious! Is that really one of your favorite movies? It’s such a kitsch movie.(Photo by © Dimension Films)It is! And a lot of other people love it too. Trust me. What do you remember about playing science teacher (and alien) Dr. Edward Furlong?Stewart: Oh my God. Yeah. I mean, first of all, I had come from MTV and other things, but it was my first experience of really feeling like, “Oh, I m the old man in this.” A lot of my scenes were with Josh Hartnett and all those good folks. I loved it. I mean, Robert [Rodriguez, the director] is so great. I just remember how quickly he worked and what a fascinating process it was. The Arrowverse will be facing the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover while Riverdale forecasts a world without Jughead. It is a time of Walkers, Titans, and a couple of new women making their mark on the Comics on TV landscape. So let’s take a look at what the 2019 fall season has to offer. And as we did last year, we’ll offer some comic book recommendations with thematic or direct ties to each show.Titans: Season 2 (2019) 81% Returns: September 6 on DC UniverseWhat to Expect: Once Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) breaks free of Trigon’s (Seamus Dever) grasp, he will reopen Titans Tower and reestablish the team with Rachel (Teagan Croft), Kori (Anna Diop), Gar (Ryan Potter), Jason (Curran Walters), and Donna (Conor Leslie). Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly) may also join the new team, but their status is a little more up in the air following their fight with the Nuclear Family. Meanwhile, Deathstroke’s (Esai Morales) children Jericho (Chella Man) and Rose (Chelsea Zhang) escape from his grasp to train with the Titans. It is a move fraught with danger as the legendary assassin is the reason Dick ended the team five year ago. Meanwhile, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) will be saying his goodbyes to National City while Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) will be making a return to the 21st Century. Initially introduced as Dr. Ramsey Rosso, an acquaintance of Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), he will join Team Flash before his grudge against them explodes into violence. His story will lead The Flash into “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” For Barry (Grant Gustin), the first half of the season sees him facing this prophecy from The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett): for the Multiverse to survive, Barry Allen must die. And in another “Crisis” connection, Tom Cavanagh will play Pariah in addition to a “swashbuckler” version of Harrison Wells featured throughout the season. As Principal Weatherbee “ascended” with the rest of The Farm at the end of season 3, Riverdale High will get a new lead administrator in the form of Kerr Smith’s Principal Honey. Meanwhile, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) will find himself transferred to a private school where he joins the writer’s program ran by Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer). How it leads to the Spring Break flash-forward — and Jughead’s absence in that scene — is anyone’s guess. Also, Veronica (Camila Mendes) joins Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) in a maple rum business. The idea of the Purge, the annual night of legal violence that forms the spine of the scarily successful franchise from Blumhouse Productions, has surprising origins: a road-rage incident involving The Purge creator James DeMonaco’s usually more mild-mannered wife. Dawson's Creek  Composer: Paula ColePerformer: Paula ColeCole released I Don t Want to Wait  on her 1996 album This Fire, and it was picked up for the series in a last-minute decision after the producers couldn t get rights to Alanis Morissette s song Hand in My Pocket, executive producer Paul Stupin told Billboard in 2018. Cole won the Best New Artist Grammy in 1997 and was nominated for six others, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Album for This Fire and Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? She was also nominated for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. The song spent 56 weeks on Billboard s Hot 100 between 1997 and 1998 and is indelibly linked to the TV series despite being replaced in a money-saving move for streaming and boxed sets.19. The Sopranos 92% Composer: Jake Black and Rob SpraggPerformers: Alabama 3Sinister, brooding, and pulsing with violence, Woke Up This Morning served as the perfect soundtrack to open The Sopranos during its acclaimed six-season run. Yet what s funny about the whole thing is that while the song was used to lure viewers into the world of an old-school New Jersey mafia don, it was written and recorded by an electronica-infused London musical collective — and rather than drawing on organized crime for inspiration, songwriters Jake Black and Rob Spragg were moved to create the song after hearing about a woman sentenced to life in prison after murdering her abusive husband.18. Ally McBeal 61% Composer: Vonda Shepard and Paul Howard GordonPerformer: Vonda ShepardIn the music business, fame can be fleeting — and just when you think you may have missed your shot, the spotlight can swing back around when you least expect it. Such was the case for Vonda Shepard, who scored a huge adult contemporary hit in the late 80s, Can t We Try, as a duet partner for Dan Hill. She was without a major label deal by the tail end of the following decade, but she d built a fanbase that included a certain Michelle Pfeiffer — whose husband, writer/producer David E. Kelley, was developing what would soon become one of the quintessential TV dramedies of its era. Shepard s original song, Searchin My Soul, encapsulated her own journey as well as Ally McBeal s; fittingly, she ended up becoming a recurring character on the series, anchoring four soundtracks and a compilation along the way.17. 30 Rock 78% Composer: Jeff RichmondJust because you re making a workplace sitcom doesn t mean you can t keep things in the family. For proof, look no further than 30 Rock creator, star, and executive producer Tina Fey, who knew exactly where to turn when she needed a theme song: her husband Jeff Richmond, whose jazzy retro jingle helped spark memories of all the TV tropes the soon-to-be cult favorite would mine for gems of satirical and/or surreal humor. Richmond s 30 Rock work would go on to earn a slew of Emmy nominations — and the duo would mix business and pleasure again with the theme for Fey s next sitcom creation, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.16. Community 88% Composer: Ludwig GöranssonPerformer: The 88In a little less than a decade, Ludwig Göransson has emerged as a hotly in-demand talent in the music business, landing an eclectic assortment of projects that runs the gamut from producing pop and hip-hop records to scoring major movies like Creed, Venom, and Black Panther (for which he won an Oscar) — and it all started on the set of Community, where his musical contributions included the theme song, At Least It Was Here. Göransson didn t perform the tune, which was recorded by L.A.-based pop band The 88, but it opened a slew of doors for the Swedish composer — including a long and fruitful association with acclaimed recording artist Childish Gambino, a.k.a. Community veteran Donald Glover.15. Westworld 81% Composer: Ramin DjawadiWestworld s theme hasn t burrowed its way into the collective prestige TV-watching consciousness the way the Game of Thrones theme has, but give it time — as he did with his Thrones theme, composer Ramin Djawadi uses his music to introduce the show by distilling the conflict at the heart of the story, reflecting the tension between more-human-than-human androids and their flesh-and-blood overlords with a melody that weaves between piano and strings.14. Friday Night Lights 97% Composer: W.G. Snuffy WaldenTV shows adapted from movies haven t had the most stellar track record, to put it mildly, so it s easy to forgive the members of Explosions in the Sky for refusing to provide the theme song to the Friday Night Lights series — and just as easy to understand why the showrunners turned to TV music pro W.G. Snuffy Walden for some musical cues that would evoke the Texas band s deeply evocative instrumental style. It was Explosions Your Hand in Mine that anchored the Friday Night Lights movie soundtrack, after all — and the surging Walden score used for the FNL television theme echoed their work so strongly that plenty of fans still think they actually performed it.13. Six Feet Under 81% Composer: Thomas NewmanTV theme songs have come from just about anywhere — older, obscure songs repurposed for new shows; new music commissioned from unlikely sources; even a few seconds of seemingly incidental sound can end up opening a series. But sometimes, a showrunner s best option is to fall back on the tried and true and reach out to a professional composer — as Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball did when he hired Thomas Newman to contribute the theme music for his HBO series. Newman, a frequent Oscar nominee whose work has been heard everywhere from Revenge of the Nerds to The Shawshank Redemption, went on to win an Emmy; these days, Newman is back on the small screen with the theme song for Hulu s Stephen King-inspired Castle Rock.12. Dexter 71% Composer: Daniel LichtDexter juggled a number of elements during its largely acclaimed eight-season run, but at bottom, this Showtime hit was arguably always a horror story — a tone consistently brought out by composer Daniel Licht, whose ability to balance alluring melody with unsettling darkness made him perfect for the series. That blend is particularly evident in Blood Theme, continually evolving versions of which played over Dexter s closing credits; fittingly, Licht first used elements of the composition in music for Necronomicon, an early 90s anthology horror film inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft.11. Malcolm in the Middle  Composers: John Flansburgh and John LinnellPerformer: They Might Be GiantsThey Might Be Giants have made a career out of distilling the absurd into pure pop genius, so it s perhaps only fitting that one of their greatest moments of mainstream success came courtesy of a song that started out as a 30-second introduction to a sitcom. Approached by Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer for a theme song, longtime partners John Flansburgh and John Linnell served up Boss of Me, which ended up anchoring a seven-season hit — and winning the duo their first Grammy.10. The Office 81% Composer: Jay FergusonHardcore fans of The Office know that supporting character Creed Bratton is a fictionalized version of his portrayer Creed Bratton, who in real life was a member of the band the Grass Roots and has continued his recording career since the series ended. But Bratton isn t the show s only connection to a 60s and 70s cult favorite group — the theme song was written by Jay Ferguson, who was a member of Spirit before launching a solo career that segued into film and television work. His impressively eclectic credits also include a cut on the Terminator soundtrack and the Nightmare on Elm Street 5 score, but this ode to Dunder Mifflin might always be his greatest hit.9. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 96% Composer: Jeff RichmondA sitcom about a young woman experiencing the world after being freed from captivity in an underground bunker for 15 years faces a number of uphill battles right off the bat, not the least of which is the question of how to come up with a theme song that makes audiences okay with playing such a horrific premise for cheerful laughs. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt had a secret weapon in composer Jeff Richmond, who just so happens to be married to series co-creator Tina Fey — and who teamed up with Songify the News masterminds the Gregory Brothers to create a suitably silly fake viral news clip a la Bed Intruder. 8. Curb Your Enthusiasm 92% Composer: Luciano MicheliniLuciano Michelini s Frolic couldn t have made a better theme for Curb Your Enthusiasm if he d tried — which works out perfectly, since the Italian composer penned the piece for the 1974 Italian film La Bellissima Estate, decades before this long-running HBO comedy was even a glimmer in Larry David s eye. As David later explained, he came up with the idea of using Michelini s music after hearing Frolic in a bank commercial and deciding it would make an ideal counterpoint to some of his character s more misanthropic behavior. Nine seasons later (and counting), it s still a perfect match.7. Law & Order  Composer: Mike PostBy any measure, it s hard to overstate Mike Post s influence on the television music landscape. A towering presence during the 70s and 80s, Post collected an impressive array of pop radio hits as a TV composer — his instrumental themes for The Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, and Magnum P.I. all made the Top 40, while the theme for The Greatest American Hero, featuring vocals from the immortal Joey Scarbury, was a No. 2 smash. All that being said, it s Post s work for Law Order that might be most widely remembered today — and not only the theme song, but the scene-changing sound effect, dubbed  The Clang, that became an L O franchise mainstay.6. Doctor Who 92% Composer: Ron Grainer and Delia DerbyshireFew television series have balanced permanence and change as artfully as Doctor Who. A BBC mainstay from the early 60s through the late 80s, the show remained beloved by sci-fi fans during its years in TV limbo — and it s attracted a whole new generation of fans since returning to the airwaves full-time in 2005. Along the way, the Who theme song (titled simply Doctor Who ) has remained a haunting through line, with Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire s groundbreaking original arrangement echoing through every subsequent update.5. RJD2Performer: RJD2Spurned by Beck, who later recalled scoffing at the idea of a television show about ad executives in the 60s, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner was stuck for a theme song — until he happened to catch the instrumental version of A Beautiful Mine. Spanish-language animation along with Spanish-language TV, horror, and cinema at large   is on the rise. Over the last 15 years animators from all over the Latinx diaspora have emerged to tell stories in a variety of animated mediums: traditional 2D animation, 3D computer-generated graphics, stop-motion, rotoscoping, and beyond. And while many of their names aren t as synonymous with animation as Disney, Miyazaki, or even Bakshi and Bluth, with such an abundance of talented creators in the game it’s high time more viewers became familiar with their work. That said, spoiler alert, there is a Disney film on this list. Gotta give props where they’re due.Like the Latinx diaspora itself, the movies on this list come from all over the world and tell all kinds of stories from fantastical dreamland adventures, to horrifying stories of survival, to every coming-of-age beat in between all styled to their creator’s unique visions. Some are geared toward children, others should never be viewed by a child. But they are all fantastic pieces of work that any animation (or movie) lover should know.
