Have you revealed what you would do #FortheThrone yet? HBO s marketing campaign for the final season of Game of Thrones is in full swing. Next up: beer #ForTheThrone. The series is also getting a making of documentary as a digestif for its final season. Plus, Killing Eve slays the BAFTA TV nominations, but some argue that the BBC America original doesn t meet the criteria to be eligible for all 14 of its nominations. And another Sex and the City? Really?TOP STORYGame of Thrones Season 8 Is Getting a Documentary(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)HBO will offer a behind-the-scenes-look at filming of the final season of Game of Thrones with a two-hour documentary later this year, titled Game of Thrones: The Last Watch. The film traces the making of the series’ upcoming eighth season, and is set to air May 26, one week after the series final season finishes airing. Directed by British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, The Last Watch promises “unprecedented access” while the cast and crew “contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers,” according to HBO. Game of Thrones showrunner D. B. Weiss, producer Bernadette Caulfield, and writer David Benioff are executive producers on the documentary. The Last Watch will be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand on May 26.In other Thrones brand-extension news, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Licensing Retail will release the latest Game of Thrones beer nationwide in early April. Called For the Throne, the 9.5% ABV golden ale is co-fermented with pinot grigio and viognier grape juices and then bottle conditioned with Champagne yeast. For the Throne joins the four other Game of Thrones beers Ommegang has available, including Queen of the Seven Kingdoms (a blend of sour and blonde ales), Mother of Dragons (smoked porter and kriek ale blend), King in the North (a barrel-aged imperial stout), and Hand of the Queen (a barleywine ale). Find out where to purchase on the brewery s site. Let the #HoldMyBeer #ForTheThrone memes begin. The beer is just one part of HBO s #ForTheThrone campaign, which includes outdoor events, social media emojis, a Quest for the Throne worldwide hunt for Iron Throne locations, a partnership with the American Red Cross to Bleed for the Throne, and an art collection of inspired by props, from swords to fashion, from the show. And, as Tyrion might remind us, don t forget the wine Killing Eve Tops BAFTA TV Nominations — But With a Hitch(Photo by BBC America)Killing Eve and A Very English Scandal led the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) 2019 awards nominations with 14 and 12 nominations, respectively. Patrick Melrose received six, while Bodyguard and The Little Drummer Girl each received five, BAFTA announced on Thursday. See all of the nominees on BAFTA s site here.British media reports note, however, that the spy comedy from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, which stars Jodie Comer as assassin Villanelle and Sandra Oh as MI5 officer Eve Posner, violates the awards rules that state that to be eligible, a series must have had the worldwide premiere in the UK and a UK broadcaster must have primary control over it. Killing Eve was commissioned by BBC America, however, which is co-owned by the BBC and U.S. cable network AMC. Killing Eve should only be eligible in the international series category, according to one interpretation of the rules. The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, May 12, with the British Academy Television Craft Awards taking place two weeks earlier on Sunday, April 18 at The Brewery, London.Another Sex and the City Sequel?(Photo by Warner Bros.)There might be another Sex and the City sequel after all — but it’s headed to the small screen. According to Deadline, Paramount Television has acquired the rights to SATC author Candace Bushnell’s latest book, Is There Still Sex in the City?, that examines love and dating after 50. Bushnell will write a pilot script and executive produce alongside Liza Chasin and Robyn Meisinger. The most recent effort in the franchise, CW series The Carrie Diaries, starred AnnaSophia Robb, focused on a teenage Carrie Bradshaw, and was canceled after two seasons.Pose Picks Patti(Photo by FX)Pose executive Producer Ryan Murphy announced at PaleyFest last weekend that there will be a “time leap” between seasons 1 and 2 of the FX series about the New York City ball scene. While season 1 is set in the 1980s, season 2 will pick up in the 1990s on “the day Madonna releases ‘Vogue,’” Murphy teased. After the success of Pose producer Janet Mock’s directorial debut, the Billy Porter–fronted episode “Love is the Message,” the writer will return to direct this coming season (and, of course, will continue to write throughout the season as well).Murphy teased that Tony Award winner Patti LuPone would be “coming to play with us in a couple weeks,” when she will share several scenes with Blanca (MJ Rodriguez). Season 1 guest star Sandra Bernhard has been promoted to series regular for season 2.Jussie Smollett UpdateAll charges against Empire star Jussie Smollett were dropped after the actor was accused of faking a hate crime he reported in January. According to reports, the charges were dropped as a part of a settlement that included the actor participating in community service and the forfeiture of his ,000 bond.CONFIRMED: As part of settlement with Cook County SAO, #JussieSmolett performed combined 16 hours of community service at Rev. The FBI and Department of Justice were even called upon to review the matter. One insider tied to Empire told Deadline, “Things are so unclear and there is a feeling that this isn’t over, that there’s more to come.” The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is also reportedly working with law enforcement to investigate a hate-filled letter that the actor received on the set of the Fox drama. If it is discovered that the letter was sent by the actor to himself, he could face 5-20 years of jail time.Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has been critical of the deal prosecutors agreed to in the attack, is sending Smollett a bill for 0,000 for police overtime. In the meantime, the actor is nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series NAACP Image Award to be presented on Saturday. 1.19.0 7月喜迎(Photo by Gene Page/AMC)Rick Grimes is gone from one part of The Walking Dead TV world, but his departure in Sunday’s “What Comes After” sparked the announcement that we’ll continue to follow his story — with Andrew Lincoln returning to his iconic role — in a trio of made-for-AMC movies that will begin production in 2019.The movies are the first specific projects that former TWD showrunner/now chief content officer Scott Gimple has clued fans in on, but the growing TWD TV universe will also include new projects with new characters, and old characters — even some dead ones — returning in new ways. Gimple talked to Rotten Tomatoes about plans for the future, shared how Robert Kirkman’s comic-book backstories might be getting movie or limited-series treatments, confirmed we will find out more about Jadis and the helicopter people (on the series and in the Rick Grimes movies), and teased the “brand new show” The Walking Dead becomes with Sunday’s episode.Kimberly Potts for Rotten Tomatoes: It’s sad to think about The Walking Dead without Rick Grimes, but that teaser of the next three episodes that aired immediately after Sunday’s episode was exciting. We re going to see these other characters we’re invested in find out what they re capable of, see who they will become, who the new leadership will be, without Rick. Did that inspire the writers and the cast after Andy Lincoln’s departure? There s a couple of things. The end of the episode, we saw the helicopter fly off, and we held on that frame, and the trees grew and one of the trees fell down, and the exciting scene of these people being saved … and we see that it s Not-So-Little Asskicker, Judith Grimes. To me, that was … it’s like it almost fulfilled the previous eight years and five episodes, and yet also launched everything into this brand new world. It’s starting with [issue] 127 of the comics and The Whisperers, and we have these new characters. And even more importantly, there s these beloved characters we have who have evolved. And they ve evolved without us over these six years [of the time jump], and we get to find out where they re at, meet them again, see what s happening, see the relationships of it. I think the audience is in for, yet again, a brand new show that they will have to kind of learn all over again in an exciting way.At the same time, that opportunity exists now for Rick in these upcoming movies. He has a freedom that he hasn t really had in the time that we ve gotten to know him on the series, and that he probably didn t really have when he was a sheriff and he had this young family. How much will that be the driving force of the Rick movies?(Laughing) You make it sound like he s going off to party. Rick Grimes is at the center of them, and we ve seen him evolve through these eight years and five episodes from a man with a very strict moral code living in … it took him a while to sort of leave the world he had lost, enter the world of after everything. And through that time he built himself up and he broke down and he had incredible losses and he lost his mind at points. He became incredibly pragmatic and even brutal at some points. And in the end, Carl was able to bring all those pieces of him together and get back some of what he had lost from that very first Rick Grimes that we saw, and I think that made for a beautiful ending of a chapter. But now that he understands this world, that he has both the capacity for humanity and brutality, of pragmatism and idealism, it puts him in a very interesting place for yet another evolution. To find himself in a place, in a situation, that challenges him in ways that we haven t seen, and that all of these experiences have been trying to set him up for. So, it s going to be a brand-new story. It ll be very much unlike what we ve seen, and it s very scary in some ways, but I think it s doing right by the character by challenging him in ways that are completely different than how he has been challenged before. One of my favorite things about “What Comes After” is that Rick literally got back on the horse. The man fell on rebar! He pulled himself off of rebar, and literally got back on the horse. And then he got back on the horse. You’re working now on the script for the first movie. What can you say about the logistics of Rick s story continuing? It s tough to imagine a Rick Grimes who survives and gets well physically and then doesn t immediately go back to his people.I can t get into much of it, but what you bring up is an incredibly big part of it. You re right, the connection with what he has back at home is a critical part of who he is. It is a critical part of his story moving forward. But it won t be so easy as even the most difficult thing of just getting back. He s going to find himself in the center of a situation that s very complicated and different and unusual to what we ve seen, but his love of his family — and really that last episode was all about his family and what his family is and what it means to him — that s such a huge part of this.(Photo by Jackson Lee Davis/AMC)Jadis and the helicopter people are out of the picture, too, now that they’ve flown off with Rick. Will we eventually find out more about their backstory?Yes. There ll be some explanation of what that s all about. We re going to find out more about the relationship of Jadis and the helicopter and all that. That stuff is part of the movies. People shouldn t expect to see a lot more of that on The Walking Dead, but I will say that we re going to tell the story of what happened in these years that have passed on The Walking Dead. It is possible that people might see some other stories that have to do with that group on the helicopters within the TV show. But not a ton of it.Do you have the arc of all three Rick movies planned out?Oh, yeah. The arc is planned. They re not finished, but absolutely, we know the arc. This expansion of the TV universe will include a lot of other characters —characters who are no longer part of the original series, characters who maybe are no longer alive. Could that mean, for instance, a movie or limited series about The Governor, based on the novels by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga, or Negan’s backstory, from the series Kirkman did within the comics last year, that things like that could be explored in movies or limited series?Yeah, that s exactly it. Those aren t going to be the whole of it. We want to have new characters, we want to have stuff that is completely unattached to anything we ve seen before, too. Potentially just not even anything more than a great story within this universe that doesn t necessarily have to be, you know, Eugene s cousin. We will have stuff that connects, and we ll have stuff that just sits completely on its own and it s just a great story. We really want to pursue variety and we really want to have stories that are very distinct from one another. We want to have new voices telling them. I m excited to be doing a lot of stuff within this, but we re going to be having a lot of other people doing things. I look forward to working with them, as I worked with Angela [Kang, TWD showrunner], as I worked with [Fear the Walking Dead showrunners] Andrew [Chambliss] and Ian [Goldberg] to get their stories going.New voices are incredibly important to this, because we want the variety. We want to see things that we haven t seen before, explore tones that we haven t seen before, in different corners of the world; see situations that are completely different than what we ve seen before on the show. So these specials, and these series of varying length, these movies of varying scope, are going to give us really, really different expressions of the what The Walking Dead is and what The Walking Dead can be.Will Fear the Walking Dead be included in this expansion of the TV universe?Absolutely. We re going to see characters from Fear in other expressions. We might see characters from Fear who are no longer there. We might explore incidents and histories that have been discussed. Yeah, it s all on the table. A lot of this is driven by, we ve been doing this for going on nine years now, and the audience has had questions all along. What about this? What about that? What about this character with that character? We re going to see some of those questions answered.Like, maybe we’ll finally find out what happened to Tobias, the apocalypse-savvy teen from the first season of FTWD?Oh my God, yes. So many questions about that. Anything is possible. I will say, other sort of unexpected crossovers are possible. It really is energizing. You feel like a kid in a candy store to be able to look at all of these characters in a different way and to look at their histories. I really can t wait to dive into it.It worked incredibly well with Morgan, sending him over to the FTWD storyline. The last season of Fear was so good. I know Morgan is a very special character to you and you’ve written so many of his best moments. Is there a chance maybe Rick and Morgan, the first great friendship of TWD, could meet up again? An annoying answer, but anything is possible. This is all a very long-range plan. But it’s the feeling of those fantasy meetings and those kinds of pair-ups that get us excited. We want to get back to those, too.(Photo by Jackson Lee Davis/AMC)In terms of The Walking Dead, and the rest of season 9, what was most important when thinking about the post-Rick world?I guess the words that come to mind are to seize upon the moment of the new. With both shows, they reinvent themselves every eight episodes, but this, of course, is the biggest reinvention of the series. We had flirted with it happening at the end of season 8. Andy knew about my new position. Pretty much everybody on Walking Dead knew about it to a degree, and we were just trying, as I elevated Angela to showrunner, to figure it out. I was excited for Angela to be the embodiment of that reinvention, to be that new voice, even though she’s a vet on the show. With Angela coming in at this point when Rick is leaving, it was just like, wow, let’s seize upon these circumstances to tell something brand new. And it goes back to Robert Kirkman again. Robert shocked all of us who are into the [comic] with issue 127 [and the big time jump]. Robert is a genius, and he knows when to shift gears and when to surprise the audience, and he did that with 127. Knowing that we were moving towards that — Angela moving into the showrunner role, Andy going — assembling all of these parts in the right order and the right way and to seize upon this change to hopefully light the audience s brains on fire with possibility, instead of “this thing is ending.” It s like, no, things are just changing. This season is so new and exciting, sophisticated and surprising, it really is an evolution of the show. And with a show that is in its ninth season, having these kinds of changes, they aren t problems. They re opportunities. Angela and the writers have just killed it, and the crew is just as great as they were. I see the same sort of motivations, the producers and the cast and the new cast coming in. I love this group of people. Cailey [Fleming, the new actress playing Judith] is amazing. And Magna (Nadia Hilker) and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), the rest of the new group is just remarkable, and some really new and interesting actors. I can t wait for people to see Lauren [Ridloff as Connie] and Angel [Theory as Kelly], next week. Their characters are amazing, but they are just charming and brilliant. It s really something special. To be able to say that after losing Rick — and yes, we have stuff coming up of course with the movies and all that … I m really excited for people to get excited about that — but they should be getting excited about The Walking Dead, too, because it really is a brand-new show. The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.

Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s indie features are streaming. From promising releases by new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week. For the foreseeable future, the specialty box office and all theatrical releases will be on hold as we all make efforts to socially distance ourselves and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. With that in mind, we have reshaped our Indie Fresh List to include VOD and select drive-in releases. This week we have three horror films one about a killer rideshare, one about a stranded astronaut with a secret, and a punk rock slasher horror-comedy. In our Spotlight section, we have a documentary about a political experiment with the youth of Texas and a chat with the film s directors, award-winning documentarians Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine. Finally, we have new trailers featuring Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, Robin Williams, and Janelle Monáe.New This Weekend

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Ancient Aliens, Indiana Jones 5, Peeps, and Saw X.This WEEK S TOP STORYPHOEBE WALLER-BRIDGE JOINS HARRISON FORD IN NEXT INDIANA JONES(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)It appears that Phoebe Waller-Bridge may not be reprising her role as the star and writer of Amazon s Fleabag beyond its first two seasons any time soon (or ever), but we will definitely see her in other high-profile projects. In addition to co-writing Daniel Craig s last James Bond film, No Time to Die (and voicing L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story), Waller-Bridge will co-star with Donald Glover in Amazon Studios upcoming reboot of Mr. + Mrs. Smith.  This week, however, she landed what might be her highest profile project ever, as she will be joining Harrison Ford as what is apparently the female lead in the not-yet-titled fifth Indiana Jones (7/29/2022) movie. Although Steven Spielberg was at one point expected to direct, he will be shepherding the film as producer instead, with James Mangold (Logan, The Wolverine, Ford v Ferrari) directing the sequel instead. Harrison Ford will turn 80 years old on July 13, 2022, 16 days before the current release date for Indiana Jones 5. Lucasfilm has not yet revealed any details about the premise or setting of the movie, but based on Ford s age, one could guess that it might sometime in the 1970s or even the 1980s. We also learned this week that composer John Williams will be returning to give the classic Indiana Jones theme an update. Finally, in related news, the project that Steven Spielberg will be working on this summer instead of directing Indiana Jones 5 will be his untitled drama based on his youth in Arizona, and the latest star Spielberg has cast is Paul Dano, who will be playing the fictionalized version of Spielberg s father. Dano joins the already cast Michelle Williams as Spielberg s mother and Seth Rogen as Spielberg s favorite uncle.Other Top Headlines1. OLIVIA COLMAN TO CELEBRATE THE MOVIES IN EMPIRE OF LIGHT (Photo by Sophia Mutevelian/©Netflix)You would think, for as many movies there are about filmmaking, there would be more than just a few films that are actually about movie theaters (examples include The Majestic, Cinema Paradiso, Matinee, and partially, Inglourious Basterds). Director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) appears determined to increase that tally by one as he has written (in what will mark his first credit as a film s screenwriter) and will direct a romantic drama called Empire of Light, set at a movie theater in England in the 1980s. Olivia Colman will star in Empire of Light in an unspecified role, and the Searchlight Pictures film will be shot by Mendes frequent cinematographer, Roger Deakins (Revolutionary Road, Blade Runner 2049, 1918), when filming starts on location later this fall.2. NETFLIX MAKES FIVE YEAR DEAL WITH SONY THAT INCLUDES MORBIUS AND UNCHARTED (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Over the last year or two, as big studios launched their own streaming services, just a few major distributors remain that didn t follow suit (namely Sony, MGM, and Lionsgate), not counting pay TV providers like Starz (which is owned by Lionsgate, and with which Sony has had a deal since 2006). We now know why Sony never announced their own streaming service, as the studio has instead signed an exclusive five-year licensing deal with Netflix that will begin in 2022 and will include such upcoming Sony movies as Marvel s Morbius, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, and the video game adaptation Uncharted. This deal basically positions Netflix as the main streamer that will have Marvel movies other than Disney+, as Sony will continue to have their own slate of Marvel Comics adaptations (Marvel projects in development at Sony include Jackpot, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, Silk, and Spider-Woman). Other Sony franchises that are likely to have new films released as part of this five-year deal include Bad Boys, Ghostbusters, Goosebumps, and Jumanji. This comes just one week after Netflix acquired the Knives Out sequels in a massive 9 deal, which we learned this week included 0 million payouts to just three people: star Daniel Craig, director Rian Johnson, and producer Ram Bergman. Lionsgate, the distributor of Knives Out, did bid on the sequels but lost out to Netflix.3. AN ANCIENT ALIENS MOVIE IS IN DEVELOPMENT(Photo by Paul Butterfield/Getty Images)Even if you ve never seen any episodes of the 16 (!) seasons of the documentary series Ancient Aliens, you may have seen memes featuring wild-haired ufologist Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, or perhaps the Viceland series Traveling the Stars: Action Bronson and Friends Watch Ancient Aliens. As the title suggests, Ancient Aliens explores theories that ancient civilizations were visited and influenced by aliens as a way to explain amazing achievements, as first popularized in the 1970s by Chariots of the Gods. Just last week, Godzilla vs. Kong (Certified Fresh at 75%) featured a setting with a mysteriously unexplained ancient temple, and now that film s production company, Legendary Entertainment, is collaborating with the producers of Cobra Kai (Fresh at 93%) for a feature film based on Ancient Aliens. Luke Ryan, who served as executive producer on Harold Kumar Go to White Castle, is now working on adapting Ancient Aliens as a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure, which sort of makes it sound a bit like National Treasure, but with the Ancient Aliens guy. No casting announcements have been made yet, but we re imagining Nicolas Cage would be perfect for something like Ancient Aliens.4. HELEN MIRREN TO STAR AS ISRAELI PRIME MINSTER GOLDA MEIR (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although there are still many large nations that have never had female presidents or prime ministers (you might be living in one right now), this was a distinction that Israel overcame as early as 1969, when Golda Meir became Israel s fourth Prime Minster. Meir s five years as Prime Minister included the Yom Kippur War of 1973, and now that period is going to be depicted in a biopic called Golda, starring Helen Mirren. Golda will be directed by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv, who won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Skin, working from a screenplay by screenwriter Michael Kuhn (Florence Foster Jenkins, The Duchess). Although described as a biopic, Golda will focus on how Meir led her nation during the Yom Kippur War despite infighting from her all-male cabinet. Barbra Streisand is also currently developing a TV series about Golda Meir starring Shira Haas (Unorthodox) in a more expansive story that includes her life as a young woman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.5. BREAKOUT BORAT STAR MARIA BAKALOVA SEES BODIES, BODIES, BODIES(Photo by IngleDodd Media/Getty Images)It happens every year (although it s a little later this year), as Academy Award nominees or winners start to see new deals come their way as a result of their elevated profile during awards season. Besides the most obvious factor of the COVID-19 pandemic, another difference this year is that one of the Academy Award-nominated movies is Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Certified Fresh at 85%), for which Bulgaria s Maria Bakalova is nominated. One might usually expect a new Academy Award nominee to sign up for something like a stuffy period film, but instead, Bakalova is attached to star in a slasher film for A24 (Midsommar) called Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. Bakalova s other main co-star will be Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), and Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live, The King of Staten Island) and Myha la Herrold are also in talks. No details have been revealed as of yet about the film s premise (other than it s a secret stalker that A24 has been putting together for several months now), and that it will be directed by Dutch filmmaker (Instinct, Fresh at 80%).6. LETITIA WRIGHT TO STAR AS HALF OF THE SILENT TWINS(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler are expected to start filming the sequel Black Panther II in July, and one of the stars expected to return for a significant role is Letitia Wright, who played T Challa s sister Shuri in the first film. This week, we learned that one of the projects Wright recently filmed in Portland, Oregon before heading back to Wakanda is a fact-based drama called Silent Twins. Focus Features has picked up the worldwide rights to Silent Twins, which is based on the true stories of June and Jennifer Gibbons, who were identical twins who were part of the only black family in a small town in Wales. It s being reported that the sisters will be played by Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence, which is a little confusing since Wright and Lawrence don t really look like each other (unless, perhaps, they play the sisters at different ages?). The title Silent Twins refers to the fact that the two girls refused to talk to anyone else besides each other.7. NO KID(DING), NO PLAY(ING), HOUSE PARTY IS GETTING REBOOTED (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)Not all 1990s stars remain as famous as others. For example, Will Smith is still pretty much an A-list star, but knowing who Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin were will probably score you some points at your local trivia night. Together, the two Christophers were known as the hip hop group Kid n Play, and in addition to their musical career, they were also the stars of the first three House Party movies (House Party, Fresh at 93%; House Party 2, Rotten at 21%; House Party 3, Rotten at 0%). New Line Cinema and producer LeBron James have been quietly developing a House Party reboot for a few years now, and this week, the reboot got closer to filming as the two leads have been cast. The new House Party stars will be relative unknowns Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Tosin Cole, and the director will be music video director Calmatic, who will be making his feature film directorial debut.  Jorge Lendeborg Jr. s highest profile role to date was probably as Hailee Steinfeld s friend Memo in Bumblebee, and Tosin Cole is probably best known for playing the companion Ryan Sinclair on 22 episodes of Doctor Who from 2018 to 2021.8. SAW X ALREADY IN DEVELOPMENT (Photo by Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)More so than any other genre, horror franchises sometimes seem critic-proof when it comes to their ability to continue getting new sequels produced in perpetuity. For example, none of the Saw movies has ever scored a Tomatometer higher than the Rotten 49% for the very first Saw, and yet, next month s Spiral: From the Book of Saw will be the ninth movie in the franchise. According to the film industry magazine Production Weekly, active development has begun on a mysterious project called Saw X, which, presumably, is exactly what it sounds like. There s not really much else to go on right now, including whether it will be a continuation of the characters introduced in Spiral: From the Book of Saw, which include roles played by Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson.9. CAN 700 MILLION PEEPS FANS BE WRONG? (Photo by William Thomas Cain/Getty Images)The bird-shaped marshmallow candy brand Peeps is obviously popular, based just on the claim that Peeps Incorporated sells over 700 million Peeps each year (admittedly a lot less than the number they make, which is reportedly over 2 billion). Having said that, Peeps is not inherently a narrative brand, since they re literally just birds in bright neon-colored marshmallow form, but that also didn t stop the Trolls dolls from getting their own animated movie (and a sequel and a spinoff series). And so, yes, Peeps is now in development as an animated movie to be produced by the team that gave us The Mauritanian (Fresh at 73%), which recently won Jodie Foster a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. A representative for Just Born, the company behind Peeps, had this to say: Peeps Chicks and Bunnies have been ingrained in American pop culture for nearly seven decades due to their instantly recognizable shapes and fan-favorite marshmallow taste, making them the perfect characters to bring to life on the big screen. 1. THREE OF MARVEL S STARS CIRCLING STEVEN SODERBERGH S NEXT(Photo by Marvel Studios)After taking a sabbatical in 2012 and 2013, director Steven Soderbergh came back with a flurry of activity that continued this year with two films on Netflix (High Flying Bird and The Laundromat) and one that has already wrapped for next year called Let Them All Talk. Soderbergh s next film is expected to be Kill Switch, a 1950s crime drama set in Detroit from screenwriter Ed Solomon (Men in Black, co-writer of next year s Bill Ted Face the Music). He is reportedly now in negotiations with three actors who are all famously known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Josh Brolin (Thanos), Don Cheadle (War Machine), and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier). If they sign on, the three would play criminals who plot a home invasion only to wonder if they have been set up in a double cross. Kill Switch is currently an independent production, but it s expected to be shopped around to major studios, based on its Marvel-level star power.2. DISNEY SCHEDULES THE KING S MAN, THE LAST DUEL, AND FOUR MARVEL MOVIES FOR 2023(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As happens every year around this time, each major studio will be making major release date announcements soon, and this year, it started with arguably the biggest player on the field right now, Disney. Let s start by discussing the most mysterious dates, which are for untitled Marvel movies in 2023, on February 17, May 5, July 28, and November 3. These dates are on top of the movies we know about for 2020, 2021, and 2022, and also on dates in 2022 that don t yet have titles specified yet. We can, however, make some educated guesses about what films might be scheduled for 2022 and 2023, based on the films that haven t been dated yet, and those titles include the sequels Ant-Man 3, Captain Marvel 2, Deadpool 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as well as the reboots of Blade, Fantastic Four, and X-Men. Disney also pushed The King s Man back from 2/14/2020 to September 18, 2020 and scheduled Ridley Scott s The Last Duel for a platform release starting on December 25, 2020 that will expand wide on January 8, 2021.3. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY STAR JOINING MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 (AND PROBABLY 8)  (Photo by Marvel Studios)It s something of an understatement that when Disney fired (before eventually rehiring) director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, they also inadvertently threw the schedules of the film s cast sort of out of whack, and we re still seeing the ramifications. One of those available co-stars is Pom Klementieff, A.K.A. Mantis, who joined the franchise with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Screenwriter and director Christopher McQuarrie took to Twitter this week to announce that Klementieff will be joining the Mission: Impossible franchise with Mission: Impossible 7 (7/23/2021), and if we take his use of the #MI78 hashtag literally, also for Mission: Impossible 8 (8/5/2022). The tweet didn t specify what Klementieff s role might be, but her reply, Mischief: accepted, might give us a hint.4. NEXT STAR WARS MOVIE STILL SCHEDULED FOR 2022, STILL SHROUDED IN MYSTERY (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently departed the Star Wars project that had been scheduled for December, 2022, but Disney has confirmed that they are still scheduling a Star Wars movie for that date (12/16/2022). Having said that, Disney is reportedly not yet ready to specify who their new Star Wars director will be, and will make that announcement in early 2020. Jon Favreau, who is currently basking in warm reviews for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian (Fresh at 89%), is reportedly one of the figures whose responsibilities are being stepped up at Lucasfilm. What we do know this week, however, is that the director of the 2022 Star Wars won t be Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and it won t be Kevin Feige s project either. Who do you think should direct the next Star Wars?

This has been a year with very few big superhero blockbusters, but Wonder Woman 1984 is finally coming to save the day. Ahead of its Christmas release in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max, a select group of movie critics were invited to see the DC comic book sequel at home or on the big screen and offer their thoughts. Good news: the reactions are overwhelmingly positive, and not just for the usual action movie delights, but also for why this one in particular is the best possible movie of its kind for right now. Here’s what critics are saying about Wonder Woman 1984:Is it worth the wait?I adored it.  Terri Schwartz, IGN MoviesIt s absolutely delightful.  Mike Rougeau, GameSpotAbsolutely incredible.  John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorWonder Woman 1984 is — forgive the term — wonderful.  Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmWonderful!… I absolutely loved it! Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot knock it out of the park!  Jenna Busch, VitalThrills.comIt was AWESOME, I loved it!  Mark Hughes, ForbesA resounding success… a marvelous achievement!… even better than I’d hoped it would be!! I love this movie!!  Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie NetworkWorth the wait. Between the stunning visuals and resonant emotional beats, it s a piece brimming with charm and confidence.  Meagan Damore, CBRWonder Woman 1984 is fantastic!… Get hyped, because it s the real deal.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendRyan FujitaniHow does it compare to the first movie?I enjoyed the first film, but I loved Wonder Woman 1984 even more. Meagan Damore, CBRI loved the first film and I can confidently say the sequel takes everything to another level! Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorA joyful, thrilling and engaging sequel, one that manages to connect to what worked the first time around, yet it’s still uniquely its own thing. Emotional, hilarious and exciting, perhaps even better than the first. Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie NetworkIt doubles down on the compassion and cheese that made the first so great, as well as its tenacious belief in the best of humanity. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmThe sequel is superior! Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendIt feels both bigger than the first Wonder Woman while simultaneously more contained. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comThe first Wonder Woman is my favorite of the modern DC films, and Wonder Woman 1984 makes all the smart next steps, telling a very human and very beautiful story for Diana Prince. Terri Schwartz, IGN MoviesI think I like the first film more but this is a worthy and bigger sequel for sure. Germain Lussier, io9.comI prefer Wonder Woman to Wonder Woman 1984. But I also much prefer seeing filmmakers take new, big swings with sequels and that’s definitely what Patty Jenkins and co. do here. Perri Nemiroff, Perri NemiroffHow does it rank against the other DC movies?Definitely top three… with the first Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey. Meagan Damore, CBRWonder Woman 1984 doesn’t look or feel like any other modern superhero movie. I can’t wait for us all to talk about it! Amy Ratcliffe, NerdistLet Patty Jenkins take charge of the entire DCEU! Dorian Parks, Geeks of Color(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Is Gal Gadot still wonderful?Gadot perfectly captures the essence of Wonder Woman once again! Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie NetworkGal is of course a goddess. Mike Rougeau, GameSpotLots of Diana Prince and some epic Wonder Woman moments as Gal Godot literally soars! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comHow is the surprising return of Chris Pine?Chris Pine s return is done well and makes sense. Mike Rougeau, GameSpotChris Pine’s unusual and inspired return is a huge bonus, both with humor and heart! Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie NetworkGal Gadot and Chris Pine give us the kind of windswept classic Hollywood romance that I could watch forever. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmWhat about the film s villains?Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig absolutely kill it as Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorAmazing work is done with both Cheetah and Max Lord. Wiig and Pascal are both stellar. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendPedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig are brilliantly cast…[as] villains with purpose! Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie NetworkPedro Pascal is serving a ham feast, Kristen Wiig is magnetic as hell. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmPedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig are the highlights of Wonder Woman 1984 for me. Pascal goes ALL IN on a wild portrayal of Max Lord, a conflicted but vile villain. Wiig s Cheetah evolution throughout the movie is heartbreaking yet epic. We need more! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comAll of the villains are so wonderfully layered. Kristin Wiig excels in the role of Barbara Minerva/Cheetah. The chemistry between her and Gal Gadot s Diana is unreal. Pedro Pascal adds a lot of fun as Maxwell Lord, but even he is more than he appears. Meagan Damore, CBRKristen Wiig is phenomenal as Barbara. Jenna Busch, VitalThrills.comKristen is great, but Pedro almost steals the show. Dude goes HARD. Mike Rougeau, GameSpot(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Is this the right time to release this movie?A wonderful movie for this moment in time. Mike Rougeau, GameSpotThe story is excellent and has a great, timely message. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendA magical, sorely needed beacon of hope in this year. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmHonestly, it’s just what I needed. What we all need. It’s uplifting, hopeful, and so utterly Wonder Woman. Just a beautiful film with themes that hit you right in the heart. Amy Ratcliffe, NerdistAlthough I wish we d gotten the chance to see it earlier, the movie came out at possibly the perfect time for its hope, optimism and message. Meagan Damore, CBRIt was a lot of fun and has a very heartwarming and hopeful message that, frankly, we really need this year. Jim Vejvoda, IGN MoviesWonder Woman 1984 tells us that our world deserves the kindness and empathy of a superhero like Wonder Woman, and in 2020, that feels like the most radical and necessary message of all. Wonder Woman is the superhero we need AND the one we deserve. Kayti Burt, Den of GeekIt was everything I needed and more. The movie is hugely ambitious, incredibly exciting, and full of much needed hope. Germain Lussier, io9.comIt shows that superheroes can be flawed, vulnerable, fierce, and loving. Gal and Patty have crafted a beautiful film with intrigue and hope. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorI think what surprised me most was that the message Wonder Woman 1984 leaves you with feels even more important to hear at the end of this year in a way Patty Jenkins couldn’t have predicted when she made it. Terri Schwartz, IGN Movies(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Is it going to give us all the feels? The opening 10 minutes will bring tears to your eyes. Jenna Busch, VitalThrills.comJoyful, thrilling, and tear inducing! Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie NetworkWonder Woman 1984 made me cry several times—sometimes, in the most unexpected of places. It s the only kind of (superhero) movie I have time for right now: one that can still see beauty in our broken world, and fundamentally believes it deserves saving. Kayti Burt, Den of GeekIt made me feel things — a rare feat these days. Mike Rougeau, GameSpotIt reminded me how wonderful a big blockbuster can make you feel. Germain Lussier, io9.comAre there any criticisms? Not everything adds up, but the value of selflessness, love and compassion do shine through. Perri Nemiroff, Perri NemiroffIt s also very long, to a fault at times. Germain Lussier, io9.comIt’s definitely on the long side, and sometimes slathers on so much cheese that it might be a health hazard, but it’s the kind of aspirational superhero blockbuster that we need more of. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Is it best seen on the big screen?A theater is always preferred of course, but I don t think it hurt the experience for me in anyway. A theater only would have enhanced it. Germain Lussier, io9.comThis is a big movie that was made to be seen in theaters. If they are open near you and you feel safe, I’d highly advise seeing this on the big screen before streaming it on HBO Max. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorYesterday I saw Wonder Woman 1984 in an IMAX theater… No matter what system you have at home, nothing will ever replace the magic of seeing a movie on a huge IMAX screen. Steve Weintraub, ColliderI wasn’t sure how I’d feel experiencing a blockbuster at home for the first viewing but I was so caught up in the emotion of it all but it will be a bummer not to see this one with a group of friends. Amy Ratcliffe, NerdistI sincerely hope it s an experience we can all share together in a theater someday. Meagan Damore, CBRWonder Woman 1984 opens in theate

Season 5 of Better Call Saul just wrapped up, and  holy hell. We understand why some fans are saying Vince Gilligan s Breaking Bad prequel is matching its source material for quality – and maybe even surpassing it. But what are you going to watch in the long, dark wait for season 6 of Better Call Saul? Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez is here to help with five shows that will give you those Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill feels, from classic antihero stories to sordid criminal tales. Dark, the first-ever German series produced by Netflix, just released its third and final season and, more importantly, won our recent bracket competition to crown the best original Netflix series. So if you’re a fan of the time-traveling mystery series and you ve already checked out that other Netflix sci-fi hit it s often compared to, Stranger Things, here are five more titles Rotten Tomatoes has picked out for you, presented by Naz Perez, that will hopefully brighten — or darken — your next few binge sessions.

2. THIS WEEK IN REPLACING DICAPRIO, PART 2: SAM ROCKWELL AND RICHARD JEWELL(Photo by Fox Searchlight)DiCaprio had also previously been attached to star in Clint Eastwood s next film as director, Richard Jewell (previously titled The Ballad of Richard Jewell), but his role has now gone to Sam Rockwell instead. The title refers to a security guard who discovered a suspicious backpack bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Rockwell will play Jewell s defense attorney, and the title role is going to Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya. (At one point, that role would have gone to Jonah Hill, when he was physically much heavier.) The cast for the film expanded even further this week, though, as Kathy Bates will also be co-starring as Jewell s mother. In related news, Paul Walter Hauser also signed on this week for a lower profile film, Silk Road, which is also based on a true crime story.3. NETFLIX ADAPTING HIT VIDEO GAME THE DIVISION WITH JESSICA CHASTAIN AND JAKE GYLLENHAAL(Photo by JA, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are so many Marvel movies (over 30 if you include the various Sony and Fox movies) that it s rare to find a big star who hasn t appeared in at least one of them. Jessica Chastain co-starred as an alien in last week s Dark Phoenix, and Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, and we now know that they will both headline an upcoming video game movie. Both of them actually joined the movie based on Tom Clancy s The Division three years ago, but that was so long ago that, until this week, it didn t seem like a sure thing that either was still attached. The big reveal this week is that Netflix has stepped in to produce and distribute The Division, which will be the next film directed by David Leitch, who s coming off Certified Fresh action hits in Atomic Blonde (78%) and Deadpool 2 (83%). Tom Clancy s The Division is an action role-playing game set in New York City following a mass genocide from a viral attack.4. NETFLIX ENLISTS COCO WRITER FOR THEIR TAKE ON CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)Ostensibly inspired by the box office successes of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, Walden Media started adapting C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia in 2005 with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. That first movie was a box office smash (5 million globally), but the second (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) and third (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) both dropped by nearly half with 9 million and 5 million, respectively. (The third film also dipped the franchise into Rotten territory.) Disney released the first two films, and Fox the third, but nine years later, Netflix now has the rights. To get things started, Netflix has hired screenwriter Matthew Aldrich (who cowrote Pixar s Coco, Certified Fresh at 97%) to work on their ambitious adaptations of Lewis seven novels into both movies and at least one series.5. MELISSA MCCARTHY S ST. VINCENT REUNION THE STARLING (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Like many comic actors, Melissa McCarthy frequently dips her cinematic toes into more dramatic fare (like last year s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Certified Fresh at 98%). McCarthy arguably started doing this in 2014 with the dramedy St. Vincent (Certified Fresh 77%), co-starring Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, and Chris O Dowd. St. Vincent was directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures), who had planned to direct a psychiatric dramedy called Fruit Loops (with Woody Harrelson) next, until Disney recently let it go as part of their new Fox plans. Quickly shifting gears, Melfi will instead next direct a tragic comedy called The Starling, with McCarthy and O Dowd reuniting from St. Vincent as a married couple struggling with grief.6. BO BURNHAM WILL WRITE THE NEW SESAME STREET MOVIE S SONGS  (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although January is historically seen as a dump month, studios have more recently been enjoying success with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in mid-January (Glass in 2019, Hidden Figures in 2017, Ride Along 2 in 2016, etc.). Warner Bros. is developing a Sesame Street musical starring Anne Hathaway, and they chose a release date of January 15, 2021 (which would have been MLK s 92nd birthday) a while back. Filming isn t expected to start until April of next year, and this week, we found out who will be writing the new Sesame Street songs. That role has gone to comedian-turned-writer-director Bo Burnham, who is coming off a great 2018 after his award-winning feature directorial debut with teen drama Eighth Grade (Certified Fresh at 99%). As pointed out in this piece, Burnham made an early mark on YouTube by performing raunchy songs like My Whole Family Thinks I m Gay, but it s pretty obvious that his Sesame Street songs won t be like that. Or so we assume.7. CLASSIC HORROR FILM BLACK CHRISTMAS GETTING REMADE (AGAIN)(Photo by MGM courtesy Everett Collection)Possibly more than any other genre, horror movies are particularly ripe for remakes, mostly because they can be made relatively affordably with a high potential box office return. In 2006, one such remake was Black Christmas (Rotten at 15%), based on the influential early 1974 slasher of the same title (Fresh at 71%). Both films featured young actresses as sorority house members who later became more famous: Margot Kidder (Superman) in the original film, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV s Fargo) in the remake. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures are rushing to remake Black Christmas again, and the lead actress this time around will be Imogen Poots, who co-starred in 2016 s Green Room. We say rushing because Universal has scheduled Black Christmas for just six months from now (December 13, 2019), up against the Jumanji sequel. The updated film will be directed by Sophia Takal, who co-wrote the script with April Wolfe, which gives the remake a unique female perspective that might be exactly the jolt it needs.Rotten Ideas2. KEVIN HART REMAKING BILL MURRAY S SCROOGED (Photo by Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures)Bill Murray s zombie comedy The Dead Don t Die is in theaters this weekend, and he s all over The Weekly Ketchup as well. This is the third story with Murray connections, following Ghostbusters 3 and The Starling (which is a reunion project for St. Vincent, in which Bill Murray starred). Although they don t always hit financially, remakes remain popular with Hollywood because many of them can be made relatively affordably (compared to say, superhero movies), but still have name brand familiarity. In 1988, Bill Murray starred in Scrooged (Fresh at 70%), which was itself basically a remake (more specificially a reimagination) of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Well, that remake is going to get a remake, because Kevin Hart is producing and is expected to star in a Scrooged remake for Paramount Pictures. The Scrooged remake does not yet have a screenwriter or director, so it s probably at least a few Christmases away.1. ANIMATED SPICE GIRLS MOVIE IN THE WORKS(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Spice Girls movie, Spice World (Rotten at 35%), which unironically had absolutely nothing to do with Frank Herbert s Dune (melange jokes for the win). As with all mortals, time marches on even for the Spice Girls, but Paramount Pictures has figured out a way to make another Spice Girls movie: animation. All five original Spice Girls members are signed on to star in the new animated film, which will feature both their hit songs and new songs as well. The Spice Girls movie is part of a new Paramount Animation slate that aims to release two movies a year, starting in 2020 with The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020) and the comic book adaptation Rumble (7/31/2020). Paramount is also still developing an animated Mighty Mouse movie. This story isn t the week s Rotten Idea for those films, however, but because of Spice World s Tomatometer score.Like this?
