Two of Netflix’s biggest titles are returning this month for a summer binge — and that’s just the half of it! With the reboot of Veronica Mars on Hulu, the final season of Suits on USA, and Sarah Jessica Parker still charming away on HBO, there’s plenty to keep us busy in front of the small screen. Catch up on it all below.Divorce 78% (HBO)What it is: After reaching household-name status and everygirl envy on Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker makes her way back to prestige TV’s small screen with Divorce, where she stars as Frances, a middle-aged mother and beleaguered wife to Robert (Thomas Hayden Church), who, after having an affair, realizes they’d both be better off without having a ring on it.Why you should watch it: Parker has always been a fine actress, and she puts her well-practiced on-screen skill set to excellent use here, mining creator Sharon Horgan’s (Catastrophe) emotionally hefty and darkly humorous scripts with empathetic aplomb. Season 3 premieres July 1 on HBO.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, HBONow, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 9 hours (for the first two seasons)Stranger Things 93% (Netflix)What it is: A dark mystery overtakes a rural Indiana town when the young Will Byers goes missing and a young girl with a shaved head and telekinetic abilities appears. Something sinister and supernatural has come out to play — and that’s just the pilot! So buckle up. Why you should watch it: It was the synth-laden soundtrack heard ’round the world three summers ago when Stranger Things dropped out of nowhere onto Netflix and took us all by storm. A back-to-form Winona Ryder, career-best David Harbour, and breakout stars by way of all its kids (but particularly Emmy nominee Millie Bobby Brown) are pitch-perfect and paired with plenty of ’80s-era horror nostalgia to make you want to watch this series again and again — and there ain’t nothin’ strange about it. Season 3 streams July 4 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 17 hours (for the first two seasons)Harlots 97% (Hulu)What it is: Set in 1763 London, Hulu’s Harlots charts the lives of sex workers in two warring brothels, one led by Margaret (Samantha Morton) and the other by Lydia (Lesley Manville). The series, from creators Alison Newman and Moira Buffini, is a period drama inspired by the true-life accounts documented in The Covent Garden Ladies by Hallie Rubenhold, but don’t let its nonfictional nature bore you: Harlots is more juicy than dry.Why you should watch it: Harlots is so much more than a show about sex — in fact, that subject is met with less titillation and more sterile professionalism. It instead subs in rich and complex characters, mostly women, and a backdrop that allows for explorations of gender and class in 18th century England. Furthermore, Oscar nominees Morton and Manville get the chance here to showcase just why they’re both widely considered British acting royalty. Season 3 premieres July 10 on Hulu.Where to watch it: Amazon, HuluCommitment: Approx. 12 hours (for the first two seasons)Snowfall 87% (FX)What it is: Created by the late John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron (the latter of whom serves as showrunner), Snowfall follows in the footsteps of other FX dramas like Atlanta in that it tells the story of an ostracized community in ways that we haven’t seen before — this time by dramatizing the rise and breakout of the first crack epidemic in 1984 Los Angeles and its greater impact on American culture at large. Why you should watch it: As riveting as it is eye-opening, this street crime series pulls no punches in its portrayal of the drug trade and its implications in both micro and macro spheres. Startling performances from its ensemble of relative newcomers also bring us into a world that until now has been left off narrative television — and they keep a hold on us there. Season 3 premieres July 10 on FX.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first two seasons)Grantchester 95% (PBS)What it is: Fans of period drama from the other side of the pond will have plenty to sink their teeth into with Grantchester. All is not as it seems in the series’ titular village, and clergyman Sidney Chambers (James Norton of the excellent Happy Valley) is caught in the middle, balancing his faith and obligatory duties while investigating a series of crimes in the area. Why you should watch it: Based on James Runcie’s book series and adapted for the screen by Daisy Coulam, this U.K. transfer from ITV has drama to spare. While at face value it may seem like the prim and proper British drama, underneath this clerical collar are festering secrets and dark pasts that bubble to the surface over the course of Grantchester’s hour-long episodes. Each season is only six installments, so there’s plenty of time to binge and catch up before season 4 premieres July 14 on PBS.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first three seasons)Suits 90% (USA)What it is: Creator Aaron Korsh struck gold in 2011 with this popular legal drama — and it’s got nine acclaimed seasons to prove it! The premise is simple: Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) is a law school dropout and brilliant fraudster who, upon impressing New York City’s top closer, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), lands a job as Harvey’s associate despite not having a license to practice law. But Mike proves that he’s up to snuff, and together he and Harvey work to keep his sordid past and illegitimacy a secret. Why you should watch it: Suits came into the international spotlight in recent years thanks to a new royal named Meghan Markle, but if that wasn’t reason enough for you to catch up on this USA Network affair, we’ve got a few more for you. The series works because it’s in on its own fun, and its high concept rags-to-riches premise rings true thanks to the chemistry of Adams and Macht. It’s a steep order to binge eight seasons, of course, but the show’s two charming leads and a formidable supporting cast have kept us coming back for more. Suits’ ninth and final season premieres July 17 on USA. (Fittingly, its new spin-off series, Pearson, also premieres that night on USA.)Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 94 hours (for the first eight seasons)Workin' Moms (Netflix)What it is: Creator and star Catherine Reitman plays the leader of a central group of friends and working moms as they make the transition from maternity leave back to office life. Why you should watch it: Being a mom is a full-time job paid in sleepless nights, dirty diapers, and, of course, unconditional love. Pair the laundry list of responsibilities that come with that job with a salaried 9-to-5, however, and tragic comedy is sure to ensue. That’s where Reitman comes in, translating it all for this semi-autobiographical sitcom. The Canadian series has already aired three seasons across the border; season 2 is finally making it to Netflix in the U.S. July 25.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first season)Orange Is the New Black 90% (Netflix)What it is: Jenji Kohan’s runaway (but locked-up) Netflix hit is ensemble work at its finest, following the day-to-day lives of the ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary and exploring the diverse crimes that got them there. Why you should watch it: Inspired by Piper Kerman’s (here Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling) real-life account of her arrest and imprisonment for drug-related money laundering, this hour-long dramedy opens up to include the equally heartbreaking (and often humorous) biographies of fellow inmates played by Emmy winner Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Samira Wiley, and others. From season to season, Orange — revolutionary and acclaimed for its on-screen diversity — becomes more and more timely, tackling everything from trans rights to gender equality to Black Lives Matter. Its seventh and final season streams July 26 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 68 hours (for the first six seasons)Veronica Mars 91% (Hulu)What it is: Set in the fictional town of Neptune, California, Veronica Mars follows the criminally charming Kristen Bell as our titular hero who cracks mounting mysteries as a high schooler and self-started private investigator. Why you should watch it: Veronica Mars is a CW cult classic from the early 2000s with an especially impassioned fanbase (its 2014 feature film was fully funded on Kickstarter) — and there’s no better time than now to see what all the hype is about. Its long-awaited fourth season returns July 26 on Hulu.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 48 hours (for the first three seasons)The Letdown 91% (Netflix)What it is: They say misery loves company, and The Letdown has that in spades, charting the ups and downs of being a first-time mother through the eyes of Audrey, a woman trying to keep her head above water while being more than “just a mom.”Why you should watch it: This Australian comedy from creators Alison Bell and Sarah Scheller (the former of whom also stars) finds the pitch-black humor in newborn motherhood with the richly dry humor and self-deprecation native to its home country. Season 2 streams in full July 31 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 3 hours (for the first season)Like this? It has become a hallmark of Black cinema, and impacted the industry by blending romance and sports in a new way. Since then, she has worked on projects in other genres because she refuses to be pigeonholed – both in TV and film. (Though she did return to romance, triumphantly, in the acclaimed drama Beyond the Lights.)Her latest film, the big-budget adaptation of Greg Rucka s graphic novel, The Old Guard, was perhaps her biggest departure yet. Starring Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more, the action flick hit Netflix last year after a planned theatrical release was scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Action is a genre that few women get the opportunity to tackle, and there are even fewer Black women at the helm of big-budget action features. Prince-Bythewood may have pushed the door open a little further: The Old Guard was a huge success for the streaming service, with 72 million views in the first month of release and talk of a sequel. She is following it up with The Woman King, starring Viola Davis as General Nanisca of Dahomey, who leads all-female unit known as the Dahomey Amazons who fought back against the French in the 19th century.Read more: Filmmaker Selects: Alma Har el s 10 Movies (and a Series) for Women s History MonthRead more: Filmmaker Selects: Issa Lópex s 10 Movies For Women s History MonthAs part of our “Filmmaker Selects” series for Women’s History Month, Prince-Bythewood shared 10 films from creatives that inspired her, and spoke with Top Critic Valerie Complex about what makes her tick, her favorite directors, and what the future is looking like for women filmmakers.Gina Prince-Bythewood on the set of The Old Guard. (Photo by Mohammad Kamal © Netflix 2020)Valerie Complex for Rotten Tomatoes: Do you miss the movie theater?Gina Prince-Bythewood: Yes! I love the collective theater experience of sitting with a group of people I don’t know, yet we all laugh/cry at the same thing. I love sitting in the theater when those opening credits come up. Especially when it s a movie that I’ve done and it s an exciting moment we all have to miss right now. What was the first film that made you really want to become a director?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting because I didn t have that epiphany watching a movie. I had that epiphany that I was a director working on a movie. I was working on a student film at UCLA. I was on set and looked around then it hit me in that moment: you re a director. From then on, I worked on improving the craft and watching great films, which is the benefit of film school. You get to see so many movies that you normally wouldn t be able to. As time moved forward, I became more and more enamored with the craft and the power of filmmaking.Being on set, what were some of the challenges you remember having when shooting your first feature Love Basketball?Prince-Bythewood: While in school, you’re given room to fail, but for Love Basketball, that was my first shot. I worked on the script for so long and fought hard to make it. I was in a constant state of anxiety that I couldn t fail. It was the fear of: If I blow this, I’ll blow my entire career. Working on the film, the crew developed a sense of family, and everyone there wanted me to win, which helped fuel me to see it through to the end.Gina Prince-Bythewood and Sanaa Lathan while making Love Basketball. (Photo by © New Line Cinema)When you talk about that collective anxiety about failure, where does that stem from for you? Is it like a collective thing of being a woman, and being a woman of color? Was it being new in the industry? All of the above?Prince-Bythewood: It’s history. Women, Black folks, and people of color don t have the luxury of failure in this industry. It is very hard to get a second film, and a third film. Suddenly, you look around and you don t see anybody that looks like you – and I learned this pretty early on in my career. Are there any particular women filmmakers that you admire?Prince-Bythewood: Well, there is Kathryn Bigelow, and Euzhan Palcy – she is someone who looks like me, and is working with people like Marlon Brando. Then there is Kasi Lemmons who directed Eve s Bayou. It’s a film I respect immensely and was so different from anything that had come out before it. When Eve s Bayou came out, it was on such another level. The craft, the storytelling, the performances inspired me. The two sisters and their story, the performance that she got from Journee Smollett and Meagan Good, that movie stayed with me. I thought it was such an incredible debut from Kasi. I’ll never forget when I met Kasi before directing Love Basketball, and she was so giving of her time, support, and encouragement.Adepero Oduye in Dee Rees Pariah. (Photo by © Focus Features)What new filmmakers are you into right now?Prince-Bythewood: There are also some dope young women out there. I get excited, not only by their work and their talent, but the fight. I know what it takes to get a film made, and for them to have the grit to get it done is impressive. There is Dee Rees, her film Pariah blew me away. I loved Tina Mabry’s film Mississippi Damned; Little Woods by Nia DaCosta, and looking forward to her next film Candyman; and Channing Godfrey Peoples, who impressed me with Miss Juneteenth.Miss Juneteenth is such a great film.Prince-Bythewood: The movie took me into a world that I had no idea existed. There are a couple of scenes in there that are devastating to watch in the best way. Peoples did phenomenal world-building, which brought me into this small Texas community and taught me something. I cared about Turquoise (Nicole Beharie) and her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze). She wants a better life for them both, and will do what it takes to change her circumstance. I just think Peoples created something special.I hear you really enjoyed Mati Diop’s first feature film, Atlantics, as well. I saw that one at Cannes in 2019.Prince-Bythewood: There was a lot of buzz about it, and I finally got a screener to watch it. I’m glad I didn’t know much about the film because it was exciting to experience that way. It s a quiet, beautiful movie, and I was just so invested in the love story. It’s beautiful, surprising, and heartbreaking.Radha Blank in The Forty-Year-Old Version. (Photo by © Netflix)And one of your favorites of last year is The Forty-Year-Old Version, which is written and directed by Radha Blank.Prince-Bythewood: Blank created something with all the elements: There’s drama, comedy, and an honest depiction of one woman s life who works in the creative arts. She has a fresh voice and clear vision that’s dope, dynamic, and bold. And shooting in black-and-white? A brilliant touch. I also loved the music and how it helps tell the story. It’s the best kind of humor because it comes from a place of truth.Your portfolio is super diversified. Like you got action, drama, romance. Do you like to do it all? Do you want to experiment with horror next? What s coming?Prince-Bythewood: I love every genre except for horror and westerns. I can t even tell you why. That s not to say I can t recognize a great western or horror film, but it s not my thing. Personally, I crave to do another love story. That is my favorite genre. However, I certainly want to see women, particularly Black women, creating in every genre. The next thing I am working on is The Woman King with Viola Davis. It s a historical epic. I m so hyped about the project because it’s a beautiful story, and we don’t often get epics of this caliber with women at the forefront.Kiki Layne with Gina Prince-Bythewood on the set of The Old Guard. (Photo by Amy Spinks / © Netflix)Do you think, since you directed Love Basketball, that the industry has changed for women filmmakers?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting you asked that, because I came across an interview I did 21 years ago during the press tour for Love Basketball, and I talked about my hopes for the future, and the fact that we re still having those conversations 21 years later is wild to me. When I shot The Old Guard I thought to myself that few women get the opportunity to do big tent-pole and action films. When I was in film school we had Kathryn Bigelow. She was the only woman I knew doing big-budget movies. This past year, seven of us – and the majority of us, women of color – got the opportunity to do the high title films. However, you can’t get too excited though because you see the actual numbers and it s like, Oh my God, how is this still happening? How are we at 12% of anything?! But it’s important to remember there are so many great films by a fantastic group of women that are in the awards conversation this year and it s long overdue.Kathryn Bigelow on the set of Point Break in 1991. (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)What do you hope to see for the future for not just women directors, but for Black women specifically? Paint a picture of how that would work if you had it your way.Prince-Bythewood: More Black women in the director s chair. I had this conversation with Regina King for another publication and we talked about that, what we bring as Black women to our storytelling. Hollywood needs to understand that we all bring something different, that we are not a monolith. We don t all share the same experiences, so we need women who are bringing different things, in different genres to the table. My life experiences are what s important to me and a large part of my work. Things are wide open, and there are so many stories and different perspectives to share. I want all of these women to have the opportunity to tell a story that no one else can tell.Gina Prince-Bythewood s The Old Guard is available on Netflix; Love Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, and Beyond the Lights are available on Vudu and FandangoNOW. This week in TV news: a new Stephen King adaptation, a Marvel crossover, and casting updates for Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi project The Nevers, DC Universe s Titans, season 3 of The Sinner, and more.Stephen King s The Stand Gets a New Miniseries — and a New EndingCBS All Access has planned a limited event series based on Stephen King s The Stand, for which the author will write a final chapter not found in the book. The cast includes Westworld s James Marsden as working-class factory man Stu Redman, Aquaman s Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as the young, pregnant Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as the deaf and mute newfound leader Nick Andros. The series takes place a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague where the forces of good and evil, and the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man, per the official description. The Stand’s previous adaptations include a 1994 miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe and a 2008 Marvel comic series. The Man Who Fell to Earth Series in the Works From Star Trek: Discovery Producers(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The Man Who Fell to Earth is turning into a TV series. Based on the novel of the same name and the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series will follow  an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future, per the official announcement.“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet said in a statement. Kurtzman and Lumet are both producers on CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery.Marvel s Runaways Meet Cloak DaggerMarvel s teen superhero shows are staging a crossover: In the upcoming third season of the Hulu drama Runaways, the main characters from the Freeform drama Cloak Dagger will meet up with the titular teen superhero team. Details about the story line have not yet been revealed.“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at,” said Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb in a statement announcing the news.Season 3 of Runaways premieres all 10 episodes December 13 on Hulu.Evil Is More Than an Exorcism of the Week The CBS drama Evil, which follows a psychologist, a priest-in-training, and a carpenter who investigate the backlog of unexplained mysteries in the Catholic church, is — as seen in the trailer above — much scarier than any series the network has aired before. But just because it s a procedural doesn t mean the series will feel the same from week to week. We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week, co-creator Robert King told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen — a school where all the girls at the school start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. I would say the other thing is you’re looking at life and you’re seeing evil, not with a capital E but with a small e — the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in? So that is really what our people are [doing]: Just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural? But also looking at hope. Visit Friends Coffee Shop Central Perk IRL(Photo by Warner Bros. / Courtesy: Everett Collection)While West Coast–based Friends fans can visit the Central Perk set as a part of the Warner Bros. 0.90.0 2月喜迎lesh-and-blood human), Imhotep is an imposing villain, at times intoxicatingly so. He’s a larger-than-afterlife presence, making him an excellent foe for Fraser’s enthusiastic determination. It Shares the Same Exaggerated Gung-Ho Sense of Exploration(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Indiana Jones is a bad archeologist, but he’s an amazing hero. Same with O’Connell and Evie, who are destructive grave robbers even by 1920s standards. That’s not the point of these films, though. The point is to go on an adventure, using the past and exaggerated mysteries of foreign lands as inspiration.Watching O’Connell scream into a decomposing mummy’s face or watching Indy knock a Nazi into some propellers is a hoot, but the battles aren t necessarily what make the films so memorable. It’s the journey into the unknown, following our friendly heroes into archaic, unfamiliar terrain. The matinée serials and pulp magazines both franchises draw from harken back to a very specific era for exploration, one that didn’t ever truly exist as it appears in pop culture, yet feels very nostalgic. The characters of Indiana Jones and The Mummy both live at a turning point of world history, right at the cusp of what we’d recognize as the modern world. It doesn’t seem like there’s much new to discover, so instead, archaeologists Indy and Evie turn to history. And in the world of these films, there’s far more buried in the past than the modern world expects. It’s a romanticism of sorts, one that’s not without its problems, but it makes for an exciting adventure at the crossroads of the past and the present, the intersection of the known world and the unknown. Both The Mummy and Indiana Jones are Way More Violent Than You Might RememberEven though The Mummy is more of an action-adventure romp than a horror movie like its classic predecessor, there are still plenty of scares and suspenseful moments. Indiana Jones operates on a similar level, because it wouldn’t be as exhilarating to see Indy whip his way through danger unless viewers, on some level, really feared that danger. Still, even if you re aware that The Mummy boasts a few scary moments, if you haven’t rewatched it in a while, you might be shocked at just how violent it is.Raiders of the Lost Ark literally melts a dude’s face off during its climax when the Nazis open up the Ark of the Covenant, and who can forget the horrific sight of Mola Ram extracting a still-beating heart from a poor man s chest with his bare hands in Temple of Doom? Taking a page from the same playbook, The Mummy blasts a bunch of excavators with acid, and that’s just a warm-up. Imhotep steals eyes and tongues from his victims, flesh-eating beetles gorge themselves as they crawl beneath the skin of their victims, and there’s plenty of torture. That the movie is technically pretty bloodless only makes the extent of the other gore even more shocking to watch.Raiders of the Lost Ark is infamously rated PG, as the PG-13 rating hadn’t yet been introduced. The Mummy, on the other hand, does sport a PG-13 rating, but in classic Indiana Jones fashion, it pushes the limit. Archaeology is dangerous, violent business, or so these movies would have you think. But for those of us slogging through our decidedly less exciting everyday lives, adventures like The Mummy and the Indiana Jones franchise before it provided thrills and ignited our imaginations like few others did. We don t get a lot of movies like The Mummy any more, and that s perhaps why lots of folks still remember it with unparalleled affection. The Mummy opened in theaters on May 7, 1999.
This week s biggest TV news includes a Twilight Zone trailer, Walking Dead ratings, updates on the assault case involving Empire star Jussie Smollett, and more.TOP STORYJussie Smollett s Empire Future in Doubt; Police Claim Actor Staged Attack Due to Salary(Photo by Chuck Hodes/FOX)20th Century Fox has been forced to reassess after the arrest of Empire star Jussie Smollett. On January 29, reports emerged that Smollett, who plays golden-voiced Jamal Lyon on the drama series, had been hospitalized after a seemingly racist and homophobic assault. Less than a month later, Smollett turned himself in to Chicago police after being charged with a felony for filing a false report for the incident, which police now allege the actor planned himself because he was “dissatisfied with his salary.”The actor earns ,000 per episode, according to The Huffington Post. By comparison, the higher end of the TV star salary spectrum includes the cast of CBS’ juggernaut sitcom The Big Bang Theory, who each earn around million per episode. Rachel Brosnahan, award-winning star of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, recently renegotiated her contract to earn around 0,000 an episode beginning with the comedy’s third season. The lower end of TV contracts will see supporting leads with no other major credits make around ,000 an episode, according to a 2017 report. While Fox initially made multiple statements in support of Smollett and reiterating that he was not being written off the series, it has changed course following the actor’s arrest.“We understand the seriousness of this matter and we respect the legal process,” a statement provided to the Huffington Post said. “We are evaluating the situation and we are considering our options.”Here s a timeline of how the investigation of the incident evolved:Tuesday, Jan. 29: Reports emerged that Smollett had been the victim of a hate crime in the early morning hours in which two men in masks poured bleach on him, tied a noose around his neck, and shouted that he was in “MAGA country.”Wednesday, Jan. 30: Police were seeking two persons of interest in the alleged assault and battery of the actor. Additionally, Smollett’s music manager Brandon Z. Moore said he was on the phone with his client during the incident and overheard part of the attack.Thursday, Jan. 31: Chicago police said that Smollett refused to turn his cell phone over to detectives and declined to provide phone records for the investigation.Friday, Feb. 1: Smollett released a statement thanking his fans for their “outpouring of love and support” in the wake of the incident.Saturday, Feb. 2: Smollett performed a sold-out show at Los Angeles’ Troubadour nightclub, during which he told fans he fought back against his attackers, and that “I’m gonna stand strong with y’all. I had to be here tonight. I couldn’t let those [attackers] win. I will always stand for love.”Thursday, Feb. 14: Chicago police arrest the two persons of interest in the case, and also say local media reports that the attack was a hoax are unconfirmed. Earlier that morning, Smollett gave his first media interview following the incident on Good Morning America, where he told Robin Roberts he was “pissed off.”Friday, Feb. 15: The two suspects were released without charges after being held and questioned for 48 hours.Saturday, Feb. 16: Police said the investigation had “shifted,” and a police source said that the two men told police that Smollett paid them to help orchestrate the attack. Smollett denied the new information.Wednesday, Feb. 20: Surveillance video appeared that reportedly showed the brothers linked to the attack purchasing the items used in the alleged assault. Smollett was officially charged with making a false police report. The felony disorderly conduct charge could come with up to three years of prison time.Thursday, Feb. 21: Smollett turned himself in to police and was released on 0,000 bond. A bond proffer (read the full document) filed by prosecutors during the actor s bond hearing revealed that Smollett paid the brothers ,500 with a backdated personal check.First Trailer for Jordan Peele s Twilight Zone Remake ReleasedStreaming service CBS All Access has finally released a full — albeit incredibly mysterious — trailer for Jordan Peele’s reimagining of the classic sci-fi series The Twilight Zone, which debuts on April 1. While it only revealed a few clues about some of the episodes’ storylines (including that Adam Scott’s character will have significant experiences with the number 1015, Sanaa Lathan’s character is dealing with something that goes “backwards,” and Kumail Nanjiani’s character accidentally changes or erases something in his life), it did show the first footage of many of the series’ biggest guest stars (including Tracy Morgan, Greg Kinnear, John Cho, Steven Yeun, Allison Tolman, and more).Yes, the iconic score is included too.The Walking Dead Hits a Ratings LowThe Walking Dead is still one of the biggest shows on television, but the series hit its all-time ratings low with season 9 s 10th episode on Sunday, February 17. The episode, Omega, earned just 4.54 million viewers and a 1.7 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, its lowest-ever outing. The episode also ended up with a season-low 76% Tomatometer score, based on critics reviews. As a means of establishing the character of Alpha, the harsh and violent new antagonist and leader of the Whisperers, Omega is bluntly effective. As an episode of The Walking Dead, it s pretty thin gruel,  Alex McLevy wrote for AV Club.Don’t worry too much, though — it’s still the top-rated non-sports cable show on television.Casting Update: New SNL Hosts, Gotham Alum’s New Role, Lost Boys TV series, and MoreComing to #SNL in March! ☘️ @mulaney ☘️ @ThomasRhett☘️ @idriselba☘️ @thegreatkhalid pic.twitter.com/TMQJ8aKhNw Saturday Night Live SNL (@nbcsnl) February 20, 2019Saturday Night Live will welcome People magazine’s reigning Sexiest Man Alive on March 9 when Idris Elba hosts the sketch comedy series for the first time. The week before, March 2, former SNL writer John Mulaney will host. Mulaney’s musical guest will be country star Thomas Rhett, while Elba’s will be singer Khalid.Gotham star Robin Lord Taylor, a.k.a. Cobblepot/Penguin, is joining season 2 of Lifetime-turned-Netflix drama You. According to Deadline, he’ll play Will, a “thoughtful, personable, and highly intelligent guy who marches to the beat of his drummer” and occasionally “deals with unsavory sorts as part of his job,” and who “gets trapped in a bad situation.”The CW is remaking ’80s vampire classic The Lost Boys as a TV series, and has cast former Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey in the pilot, which will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke. According to Entertainment Weekly, he’ll play Michael, one of two brothers who moves to the town of Santa Carla, California, after the sudden death of his father. Per EW, Michael is the “elder brother, whose life plans are uprooted when he learns he has the same genetic weakness that killed his dad.”Other casting news includes Sophia Bush in a mysterious role on Jane the Virgin’s final season, Rachael Leigh Cook as Reid’s new love interest in the final season of Criminal Minds, Alicia Witt in the final season of Orange Is the New Black, and Ryan Devlin’s return to Veronica Mars in Hulu’s upcoming new season of the series.Upcoming Reboots and RevivalsPsych is coming back — again. The cult-favorite USA series, which ran from 2006-2014, returned in late 2017 with a feature-length installment. The network announced last week that another film featuring the series original stars will air before the end of 2019.Nickelodeon is rebooting its 1990s sketch comedy series All That, which will be executive produced by original star Kenan Thompson, who has gone on to become SNL s longest-tenured cast member ever. Netflix has announced a sequel to its viral hit rom-com The Kissing Booth, with original stars Joey King and Jacob Elordi returning.Deals, Deals, DealsNetflix has signed The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan and partner Trevor Macy to a deal that will see the pair develop and produce new series for the streaming service. The deal also includes an anthological-style second season of their hit horror series, which will be called The Haunting of Bly Manor and, according to THR, will be inspired by Henry James’ short story The Turn of the Screw.Neil Gaiman is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company for a reimagined version of 1987 series The Storyteller. The new version will “create a mystical world combining various fairy tales and folklore” for what Gaiman calls “the binging kind” of modern TV viewer. Gaiman, who will write and executive produce, said in a statement, “Part of what fascinates me about The Storyteller is the stuff that we don’t know,” he said. “Who was the Storyteller, why was he telling these stories, was he a goblin, what kind of creature? What I’d love to do is an inside story that’s as long as the outside story. We’re going to find out a lot about who the storyteller is, we’re going to find out things we don’t even know that we don’t know. We’re going to begin in a Northern kingdom where stories are forbidden and where the act of telling a story is liable and can get you imprisoned or executed. If you put a storyteller into that situation, things would need to start getting interactive.”Oscar-winning production company Fabula (behind Jackie, Neruda, No, The Club, and more) has teamed up with global producer and distributor Fremantle (American Gods, My Brilliant Friend, The Young Pope) for a deal that includes their current collaboration, the eight-part Spanish-language series La Jauria.
How do you make a Disney film that feels dark and edgy, but still has that magic Mouse House feeling? That was the task set out before director Craig Gillespie and stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson as they prepped to make Cruella, an origin story for the fashionable and evil villain of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. What they come up with is delighting critics and is surely going to be a hit with audiences: a punk take on The Devil Wears Prada in which sometime designer and full-time thief Estella (Stone) is slowly taken over by her dark side – Cruella – as she grows closer to the fabulous queen of London fashion, the Baroness (Thompson).Ahead of the movie’s release in theaters and on Disney+, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Nikki Novak spoke with Stone and Thompson about the inspirations for their feuding divas, making a film perfect for the big screen, and whether they’d be on board for a Godfather: Part 2-inspired sequel that could also feature Glenn Close. (Spoiler: They love the idea.)Plus, we caught up with Gillespie to talk about the challenge of taking Disney to some places it’s never been and why making the big-budget flick felt like an making an indie; and spoke with co-stars Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joel Fry, and Paul Walter Hauser about their unique spins on characters we know and love… and just how much Cruella is lurking in their own personalities.Cruella is in theaters and available on Disney+ with Premier Access Friday May 28, 2021.On an Apple device? Santa’s elves are certainly the most well-known pointy-eared protagonists. Do you identify with Hermey, the outcast and friend-of-reindeer in Rankin/Bass stop-motion classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, who’s just not like the other elves? Maybe you don’t have elfin blood at all — you’re just so committed to the spirit of Christmas that you’re an honorary elf, like Buddy from Elf. Or maybe the holiday season is a time for scheming, and you re really most like Dwight from The Office or Marcus from Bad Santa. There are also plenty of pop culture elves outside the North Pole. This holiday season, we want to help you find your elfin alter ego, whoever they may be — Santa s helper or perhaps even Elven royalty. Take our quiz below to find out which film or television elf you share traits with.

Ghcxuf (Photo by Touchstone/courtesy Everett Collection)All Wes Anderson Movies, Ranked By TomatometerTexas played its part in the revolution of 90s American independent cinema. Dazed and Confused put Richard Linklater and Austin on the map. John Sayles made his most thrilling movie there, the neo-Western Lone Star. And emerging from Houston with an offbeat crime-caper was Wes Anderson. Bottle Rocket fizzled at the box office, but it was a crucial calling card for the director and his band of collaborators, like actors Owen and Luke Wilson, and cinematographer Robert Yeoman. And when Martin Scorsese compares your debut to the likes of McCarey and Renoir, you re probably gonna get another chance in the industry. Bill Murray signing up for Anderson s second feature, Rushmore, elevated the movie s stature and release, and introduced Bill s re-invention as the Melancholy Murray.Bottle Rocket and Rushmore s growing reputations, and Anderson s own as a modern auteur, generated significant hype for his third film, The Royal Tenenbaums. With its star-studded ensemble cast, the multigenerational comedy-epic would be Anderson s highest box office earner until Grand Budapest Hotel, and got him into the Academy s good graces with a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination. Tenenbaums also represents the point Anderson took total command of his craft: Whereas his quirky sensibilities and measured shot compositions enhanced the real-world settings of his first two films, from Tenebaums on that quirk would represent all points of reality in his work. Watching an Anderson movie means escaping into a medley of ornate sets, clean lines and angles, impeccable blocking, precisely-picked pop music, and curious dialogue and action. That was certainly the case for next feature The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, where Anderson was gifted million and carte blanche to shoot whatever he wanted. Which, of course, meant building your own ship, shooting on choppy sea waters and at the famed Cinecittà Studios in Rome, and hiring Henry Selick to animate seahorses. Life Aquatic bombed at the box office and critics were iffy on the slack pacing, but audiences have since boosted up Steve as fashion icon and man of action whilst mired in Millennial malaise. The Darjeeling Limited is mostly a minor entry, bordering on self-parody as his style continued to wallop character and story. When it was announced Anderson s next project would be a stop-motion animated movie based on a Roald Dahl story, it was almost too perfectly, eye-rollingly twee. But like knocking out the cedar stick at Whackbat, Fantastic Mr. Fox was a jubilant, all-ages success. Anderson stayed young at heart with Moonrise Kingdom, an intimate adventure of first love and organized scouting, which drew the best reviews of his career and his first significant grosser in a decade. That would all be topped with his arguable masterpiece, The Grand Budapest Hotel, a dizzying trip through alternate history, meta-fiction, shootouts, and Renaissance paintings, and one very pretty building. It earned Anderson another Best Screenplay Oscar nomination, his first nomination for Best Director, and the film won for Original Score, Editing, Production, and Costume. After four years, his longest gap between films, he put out another stop-motion film, the dystopian, Japan-set Isle of Dogs, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature. His latest film, The French Dispatch, opens in October this year. In anticipation, we look back on all Wes Anderson movies ranked by Tomatometer! 😈😈

bob官方体育appios While COVID-19 continues to impact the TV industry in big ways, talk show hosts try to keep giving us things to laugh about (including a brief comeback from Rosie O Donnell to help her fellow entertainers), Netflix gives us a new way to be socially less distant, and more in the week s top TV news.TOP STORYNetflix Party Makes It Possible to Have a Group Bingewatch (and Not Just a Virtual One)(Photo by Chris Haston/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images via Getty Images)Binge-watching episodes of The Office for the 37th time just got more fun. Thanks to a new Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party (available here), you can have movie nights and group TV viewing parties of your favorite Netflix programming. And not only does the extension allow you to watch programming at the same time on your computers, but Netflix Party also features a chat room, so you can quote Michael Scott’s wackiest words to each other, or debate whether or not “Scott’s Tots” is the worst Office episode of all time. We kid. There’s no debate. It is absolutely the worst Office episode of all time.Hopefully you stashed away plenty of snack fare, because COVID-19 social distancing just got the tiniest bit more bearable.Update: Netflix also announced that the company has created a 0 million emergency support fund for entertainment industry workers. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement:The Covid-19 crisis is devastating for many industries, including the creative community. Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs. These include electricians, carpenters, drivers, hair and makeup artists and more, many of whom are paid hourly wages and work on a project-to-project basis. This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide. So we’ve created a 0 million fund to help with hardship in the creative community. Most of the fund will go towards support for the hardest hit workers on our own productions around the world. We’re in the process of working out exactly what this means, production by production. This is in addition to the two weeks pay we’ve already committed to the crew and cast on productions we were forced to suspend last week.Beyond helping workers on our own productions, we also want to support the broader film and television industry. So million of the fund will go to third parties and non-profits providing emergency relief to out-of-work crew and cast in the countries where we have a large production base.Netflix will provide million each to the SAG-AFTRA Covid-19 Disaster Fund, the Motion Picture and Television Fund, and the Actors Fund Emergency Assistance in the U.S., and million between the AFC and Fondation des Artistes. Additional allocations worldwide will be announced next week.Lord of the Rings, The Witcher Among the Latest Coronavirus-Related Production HaltsAmazon Prime s The Lord of the Rings series was shut down March 16, according to a memo acquired by The New Zealand Herald. This is done in an environment where travel restrictions directed at the control of Covid-19 are issued daily by New Zealand and most other countries we are doing this to minimise stress on the resources and infrastructures around us by doing our part to reduce population density in our communities and daily activities, in efforts to help reduce the spread of the virus, the memo read in part.Netflix similarly shut down production on season 2 of The Witcher for two weeks, Deadline reported, noting that crew will continue to be paid during the hiatus. The show is filmed around 40 miles west of London at Arborfield Studios. Meanwhile, another Netflix production, The Crown was so near completion on season 4 that filming continued this week; though the production wrapped early, according to EW.Plus, that Friends reunion special that was going to be a highlight of HBO Max’s debut month in May might have to wait. THR.com reports the show, which will feature Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer getting together for an unscripted celebration of the 10-season sitcom, was scheduled to tape next week, but now could be pushed off for a May tape date, because of coronavirus concerns. HBO Max will be the streaming home for the series when it launches. In other coronavirus-related TV rescheduling news:American Idol suspended production and sent contestants home for now. Taped episodes will continue to air through the middle of April, when live episodes were scheduled to begin. (TV Line)Because of a delay in production on the fourth season of Fargo, starring Chris Rock, FX has postponed the premiere of the season, which was scheduled to debut on April 19.New episodes of Saturday Night Live have been postponed until at least the middle of April. John Krasinski had been scheduled to host the March 28 episode, with musical guest Dua Lipa.ABC has temporarily replaced its daytime talk show Strahan, Sara and Keke with a daily coronavirus update special. EW reports The Resident, The Good Doctor, and Station 19 have donated boxes of masks, gloves, and gowns to hospitals in Atlanta, Vancouver, and Los Angeles.TV writers rooms have found a way to keep working – offering hope that new series will launch and that we’ll see new seasons of our favorite shows – thanks to virtual meetings via the Zoom app. (THR)The Kentucky Derby has been postponed for the first time since World War II. Usually run on the first Saturday in May, it is now rescheduled for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5.With studio production on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert shut down, CBS has moved the production of CBS This Morning to Colbert’s home at the Ed Sullivan Theater in Times Square, as the network has moved operations out of two of its buildings in NYC.MIPTV, the international television market that was originally scheduled for the end of March in Cannes, has created a digital alternative. MIPTV Online+ will launch on March 30 and be available free to those who were registered for the Cannes event. The Dr. Oz Show will be filmed remotely, after a staffer on Dr. Mehmet Oz’s daytime series tested positive for coronavirus. (Page Six)Nervous about conflicting information about the pandemic, Whoopi Goldberg began performing her co-hosting duties on The View from from home this week. Meanwhile, Today host Savannah Guthrie and weatherman Al Roker are also performing their morning show duties from home.Showtime will begin airing just one new episode of its Don Cheadle comedy Black Monday, instead of two, per week, beginning on March 22.Vice TV’s Vice News Tonight series has gone on hiatus for an indefinite time.In the rare piece of good news in TV land this week: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC saw a three percent increase in viewership for the week ending March 15, when working at home and social distancing became a reality for many viewers. The week’s top shows: NCIS with 10.7 million viewers, 60 Minutes with 10.4, Young Sheldon with 8.8, The Voice with 8.7, and The Bachelor with 8.4.But The New York Times warns that while social distancing has led to an uptick in viewers across network, cable, and streaming services, as the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic grows, viewers could soon be looking to cut the cord and cancel their streaming subscriptions.Talk Shows Keep the Home Fires Burning on DigitalJimmy Fallon is also promising a nightly YouTube version of The Tonight Show: Home Edition, with his wife as camera person, songs and jokes, a spotlight on a different charity each night, and guest appearances by his kids. Jimmy Kimmel is also offering fans episodes of Quarantine Minilogues from his home, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah launched The Daily Social Distancing Show from his home (specifically, his couch), and Stephen Colbert is also dropping bon mots from various locations in his house, including the bathtub.Samantha Bee has launched a daily digital series – Beeing at Home with Samantha Bee! – in which “Sam has relocated to a rustic woodshed to teach everyone how to chop their own wood for warmth while practicing social distancing,” according to TBS. “She gives an answer to the question of how much wood would a late-night host chop? bob官方体育appios This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Father of the Bride, Hourman, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. This WEEK S TOP STORYZACK SNYDER CONFIRMS NO SEQUEL FOR JUSTICE LEAGUE(Photo by Clay Enos/NETFLIX ©2020)This week, years of online campaigning finally resulted in Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 75%) premiering on HBO Max, allowing fans to see Snyder s intended vision (instead of the version directed by Joss Whedon in 2017). Even so, Zack Snyder s Justice League is something of a superhero curio. Ben Affleck won t be starring in next year s The Batman (Robert Pattinson is), Warner Bros. is rebooting Superman without Henry Cavill, and Ray Fisher is done as Cyborg. To his credit, Snyder has been pretty straightforward this week when asked about the situation, with the gist being that Zack Snyder s Justice League is not to be considered a part of the DCEU canon. Snyder said that the original plan was for this Justice League to be followed by two more films, but now, Warner Bros. hasn’t really expressed any interest in making more movies with me, and that’s 100% fine. I understand.  Snyder may be done with the Justice League, but both The Flash (11/4/2022) (featuring Ben Affleck as Batman) and Wonder Woman 3 remain in active production or development.Other Top Headlines1. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH TO STAR AS REAL LIFE WAR MAGICIAN (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Benedict Cumberbatch first became famous for starring as TV s Sherlock, but in the years since, his most famous role has since become Marvel Studios Doctor Strange (Certified Fresh at 89%), with Cumberbatch now filming the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022). Cumberbatch s Marvel character is obviously fictional, but for his latest project, he will star as a real life British illusionist Japser Maskelyne, who assisted the World War II war effort. The film will be called War Magician, which will be the next project from director Colin Trevorrow after recently wrapping production on Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022). Jasper Maskelyne famously worked with the British military to create large scale illusions to deceive and disrupt the Nazi invasion forces, such as huge balloon tanks to inflate the size of British forces, and hide escape tools like blades or maps in combs and playing cards.2. ANTONIO BANDERAS TO RETURN AS PUSS IN BOOTS NEXT YEAR (Photo by Paramount Pictures)In 2016, DreamWorks Animation was officially acquired by NBC/Universal, which was good news for some projects, but seemed to slow down others, such as the Shrek franchise in general (the most recent Shrek feature film was Shrek Forever After in 2010). This year will also mark the 10th anniversary of the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots, starring Antonio Banderas as the feline swashbuckler, but Universal confirmed this week that another Puss in Boots will be released by the end of next year (9/23/2022). The title of the sequel will be Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Banderas is confirmed to be returning to voice the title character, although no other voice cast have been announced. DreamWorks Animation is also developing a return to the main Shrek franchise, but it appears that Puss in Boots will get his sequel first.3. EZRA MILLER S THE FLASH GAINS A MOM AND LOSES A DAD (Photo by Warner Bros.)If you had four free hours in the last day or so to watch Zack Snyder s Justice League, you may have noticed that the film s cast (as did Joss Whedon s version) included Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, the father of Barry Allen, A.K.A. The Flash. Crudup was also one of the first actors to start negotiations to reprise the role for The Flash (11/4/2022). As it turns out, however, he is now dropping out of The Flash due to scheduling conflicts with his role on the Apple+ drama The Morning Show. It s unclear whether the role will be recast, but at the same time as Crudup is dropping out, Spanish actress Maribel Verdú (Pan s Labyrinth, Y Tu Mama Tambien) has joined the film as Barry Allen s mother. Verdú joins a growing ensemble cast that will also include Ezra Miller (Barry Allen), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ben Affleck (Batman), Michael Keaton (also Batman), and Sasha Calle (Supergirl). The Flash will be directed by Andy Muschietti (IT, Mama), working from a screenplay by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Bumblebee).4. THE TIME IS FINALLY RIGHT FOR GOLDEN AGE SUPERHERO HOURMAN  (Photo by The CW)The timelines and chronologies of comic book superheroes can often be confusing to follow, in no small part because so many of the characters date back over 50 years (or, in some cases, more than 75 years). One way that DC Comics has handled this is through what DC calls legacy characters, in which younger versions of superheroes are introduced over time, resulting in a family of heroes that eventually all have the same superhero name (there have been, for example, almost a dozen different heroes called Starman). One of those DC Comics legacy heroes is Hourman, who was first introduced in 1940 as a hero who acquired superpowers for one hour at a time by taking a drug (which writers later explored in the form of drug addiction). The son of the original Hourman also became Hourman (a version of which currently co-stars on The CW s Stargirl), and in the 1990s, there was a time travelling android called Hourman, too. Despite celebrating his 80th anniversary last year, Hourman has never been in a live-action feature film, but Warner Bros. is now developing a movie that will finally correct that. Warner Bros., DC Films, and Chernin Entertainment are collaborating on a Hourman movie, starting with the hiring of screenwriters Gavin James and Neil Widener, who have also worked together in the past on the (not yet produced) sequels Now You See Me 3 and San Andreas 2. It is not yet known which of the Hourman heroes from the comics will be adapted for the Hourman movie.5. BATGIRL AND ZATANNA BOTH PART OF MYSTERIOUS WB/DC PLANS(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Back in December, Disney revealed dozens of new projects during their Disney Investor Day event, with the biggest emphasis being on Disney+ (though not exclusively). Disney s most obvious direct competition is Warner Bros. and DC Comics (as evidenced this week by the close proximity between the streaming premieres of Zack Snyder s Justice League and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). This week, AT T (the parent company of Warner Bros.) included a tease screen of 24 DC Comics projects currently in production or development, although the presentation did not go into as much detail for each project as Disney s did. That means that there were a few projects that were confirmed without us necessarily knowing what was confirmed. Specifically, the two highest profile projects confirmed this week were Batgirl and Zatanna. This is the biggest Batgirl movie news since 2017, when Joss Whedon had been working on a Batgirl project concurrent to finishing Justice League (though he dropped out of it just a few months later). As for the magical superhero Zatanna, she s come close to making her live-action feature film debut as part of Justice League Dark in the last ten years, but this appears to be a solo Zatanna project. It s also important to note that the presentation did not specify whether Batgirl and Zatanna will be theatrically released Warner Bros. feature films, or whether they might be intended exclusively for HBO Max.  6. ANDY GARCIA TO BE LATINX FATHER OF THE BRIDE (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Spencer Tracy and a young Elizabeth Taylor starred as the title characters in the classic 1950 romantic comedy Father of the Bride (Fresh at 90%), which received a Steve Martin-led remake in 1991 (Fresh at 70%) that was itself popular enough to get a sequel in 1995 (Rotten at 50%). Last month, Warner Bros. revealed that the studio is developing another remake with a Latinx focus, and this week, we found out who will be the titular father. That man will be Andy Garcia, who will star as the father of a Cuban-American family, with Garcia also serving as executive producer. It sounds like Warner Bros. is fast-tracking Father of the Bride, so we should hear about more casting for other members of the family soon.7. YOUNG ROYALS FROM BLACK PANTHER AND THE CROWN JOIN PROVISION (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)This may be a total (or near total) coincidence, but Letitia Wright played a Wakandan princess in Black Panther, and Josh O Connor starred in seasons 3 and 4 of Netflix s The Crown as the young Prince Charles, and now, they re both signed to star in the same movie. Wright and O Connor have both signed to star in the Irish drama Provision, which will depict the harrowing immigration process in Ireland. Wright will play a a young African woman fleeing persecution who ends up spending over two years in Ireland’s asylum system who befriends a security guard played by O Connor.8. DANIEL RADCLIFFE JOURNEYING TO SANDRA BULLOCK S LOST CITY OF D (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.)Like many of his Harry Potter costars, Daniel Radcliffe has spent most of his post-Potterverse career focusing on more indie projects (such as Swiss Army Man, in which he played a superpowered corpse), often in roles that are more ambiguous than his strictly heroic turn as Harry Potter. This week, Radcliffe signed on to star as the main villain in Paramount Pictures romantic adventure Lost City of D, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. The premise of Lost City of D sounds a lot like the 1980s classic Romancing the Stone, as Sandra Bullock will play a romance novelist who gets kidnapped (or targeted for kidnapping) alongside the model (Channing Tatum) who poses on her book covers.9. JAMIE FOXX AND JAIME LANNISTER KNOW GOD IS A BULLET (Photo by Priscilla Grant, JA/Everett Collection)Perhaps it s an example of apophenia, but sometimes, the coincidences in casting announcements can be hard not to notice. For example, Jamie Foxx s new co-star in the action thriller God Is a Bullet is Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who is most famous for playing Jaime Lannister in HBO s Game of Thrones (the slight spelling difference between Jamie and Jaime notwithstanding). Foxx and Coster-Waldau will be leading an ensemble cast that will also include January Jones (Mad Men), Maika Monroe (It Follows), and Andrew Dice Clay. Written and directed by Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, John Q), God Is a Bullet will tell the story of a detective (Coster-Waldrau) whose family is murdered by a Satanic cult, which leads him to quit the force to infiltrate the cult, aided by the only woman (Maika Monroe) to ever escape it. Incidentally, Nick Cassavetes father John Cassavetes himself starred in one of the most famous movies ever about a Satanic cult, Rosemary s Baby (Certified Fresh at 96%).On an Apple device?
