九游会官网网站采用百度引擎6(Baidu 1)urth highest-grossing film of the year, and it certainly has its eye on third place. Second, however, could take a bit of work. Last weekend with an opening that rose above 0 million, the fourth Toy Story was ahead of the third film in the franchise by about million. At the end of this weekend, it is still ahead of Toy Story 3’s pace by about million even if it trails weekend two of part three .3 million to .9 million. Toy Story 3 had a run that did not see a drop of 50 percent until its 13th weekend. Part four dropped 52 percent this weekend, but also had farther to fall. The 2010 chapter fell 46.2 percent and 49 percent in its second and third weekends. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 sits at 6 million domestic and 6 million worldwide; the sixth-highest total of 2019 to date. Of the 14 films to gross between 0-250 million after 10 days, only three of them (The Hunger Games, Spider-Man, and Toy Story 3) broke the 0 million domestic mark, but Toy Story 4 remains on track.Fresh Surprise: Yesterday Poised To Be One of Danny Boyle’s Highest Grossers(Photo by Universal Pictures)It may sound surprising to some, but Yesterday actually represents the best opening of director Danny Boyle’s career. Then again, it is only the fourth film in his career — on that has included Transpotting, 127 Hours, and Slumdog Millionaire — to open wide its first weekend. The last film of his to do that was 28 Days Later back in 2003, and it earned million. The Beach in 2000 was his previous high with .2 million, even if it remains his lowest scored film on the Tomatometer at 20% and just one of two Rotten films (including A Life Less Ordinary) in his filmography. With a 59% rating currently, Yesterday teeters on the edge of Fresh, but Universal is very likely more interested in the film s million start. (The studio partnered with Boyle on 2015’s Steve Jobs, which opened strong in four theaters but ultimately grossed just .7 million total.) Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog is his crowning box office achievement with over 1 million, but it is also just one of three of his films to gross over million. Yesterday will be the fourth. Will the million–budgeted film have enough word-of-mouth to pass The Beach’s million?Top 10 and Beyond: Latest Annabelle Film Lags the First Two(Photo by New Line Cinema)Annabelle Comes Home opened this past Wednesday to .18 million. As of Sunday, it is estimated to have made .2 million, which is relatively low all things considered. Of the previous Wednesday openers that began with million or more, 47 Ronin (.61 million), Rocky Balboa (.85), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (.36), and Magic Mike XXL (.89) were the only ones this century to not have million by Sunday. Annabelle Comes Home is the next-lowest after that with The First Purge coming in at .28 million. The first Annabelle made .11 million in its first five days. Annabelle: Creation made .15 million. They both opened on Fridays. Those other three films grossed million to million domestic. The million production has already grossed over million globally, so it is going to be just fine.Eight of the top 10 films this week are either sequels or remakes. John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum is approaching 0 million worldwide. It is also Keanu Reeves’ third highest–grossing live-action film after the first two Matrix films. Illuminations’ The Secret Life of Pets 2 has not picked up any international steam yet and is only at 8 million worldwide. Its path is similar to that of this summer’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu and is headed for somewhere between 1 million and 4 million — or, less than 0 million domestically below the first film. Men in Black International is doing better internationally, but much more poorly here. It is only at 9 million worldwide and still needs another 1 million to break even. The remake of Child’s Play cost 0 million less than MIBI, but is not exactly setting the box office on fire either after dropping 70 percent in its second weekend and stands at million.Far more successful is Paramount’s Rocketman. The million production has made over million domestic and 1 million worldwide — 0 million may be off the table now but it remains on track to exceed million. Disney’s Aladdin has crossed 0 million domestically, and its 4 million globally puts it in 63rd place all-time. It needs another million to break into the top 50.Lastly, we have the Avengers: Endgame record watch. Returning to theaters this weekend with new footage not seen in its first nine weeks, the Marvel title made another .9 million. At .76 billion worldwide, it is now million shy of Avatar’s all-time record. This Time Last Year: Dinos Superheroes Emerge Victorious(Photo by Universal Pictures)Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had no challengers and won the box office for a second straight weekend with .9 million. Incredibles 2 also had nothing to threaten its second-place finish with .4 million, bringing its total to over 0 million. The best the week could offer was the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which opened in third with million. Also opening was the basketball comedy, Uncle Drew, which finished fourth with .2 million. The lackluster numbers below that title opened the door for Hindi film Sanju to finish in eighth place with .72 million. The Top 10 totaled 7.20 million and averaged 63% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 5.14 million and averaged 69%.On the Vine: Spider-Man Hopes for Avengers Bump, While Midsommar Chases Critical Acclaim(Photo by Sony Pictures)The next chapter of the MCU arrives when Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Will this film receive the same kind of box office bump that got Iron Man 3 over 0 million as the first one out of the gate after the success of the 2012 Avengers film? It currently has a 91% on the Tomatometer. (Spider-Man: Homecoming has a 92%, opened at 7 million, and went on to make 0 million worldwide.)Then Ari Aster returns with a new horror epic after the praise of last year’s debut, Hereditary, one of the 10 best-reviewed horror films of the decade. Based on the 85% that Midsommar has received so far, Aster (like Jordan Peele) has a shot to own two films on that list. The Full Top 10: June 28-30Toy Story 4 (2019) 97% – .93 million (6.92 million total)Annabelle Comes Home (2019) 65% – .37 million (.20 million total)Yesterday (2019) 63% – million ( million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .34 million (5.86 million total)The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .09 million (1.20 million total)Men in Black: International (2019) 23% – .55 million (.00 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .53 million (1.31 million total)Child's Play (2019) 64% – .27 million (.40 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – .87 million (.17 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .17 million (1.31 million total)

Stephen King was rather famously unhappy with Stanley Kubrick s adaptation of his novel The Shining, even if the film went on to be a bona fide classic, beloved by millions of fans who mythologized and analyzed it endlessly. So even with a new novel from King to work with as source material, it was always going to be a daunting task for director Mike Flanagan to adapt Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining, for the big screen almost four decades later. But Flanagan may have proven to be the best choice for the job he s a huge Stephen King fan and even wrote one of his own acclaimed horror films (Hush) at the Stanley Hotel, where King was inspired to write The Shining. The end result, according to reviews, is a faithful translation from page to screen if different from its predecessor   that does a decent job balancing its genre thrills with its more contemplative themes. Ewan McGregor stars in Doctor Sleep as a grown-up Danny Torrance, who offers his help to a teenage girl (Kyliegh Curran) with the same extrasensory shine that he possesses. She s on the run from a nefarious cult known as The True Knot, who seek out others like her and Danny to feed on their special abilities. Critics say the film has its flaws it plays at times like mere Shining fan service and seems to feel the need to offer too-tidy solutions but manages to feel both like it s a part of Kubrick s vision and a unique beast all its own, with great performances (Rebecca Ferguson in particular, ahem, shines as the villain) and poignant themes that help bring an element of depth to the scares. It s probably not going to go down as a horror classic, but it s more than serviceable as an addition to the still-growing list of Stephen King adaptations.

When you look up the numbers for James Cameron’s Avatar, they are impressive: fastest film to cross the billion mark (after just the 19th day of its international release), highest opening weekend for a non-franchise movie (2 million), .789 billion at the global box office. When you look at the fanbase: crickets. How is that possible? How can a movie not just any movie, but a science fiction movie be this huge and have no discernible fanbase? No visible, active, enthusiastic devotees who dissect it and repurpose it and build stories around it like almost all genre fans do. The word “Ewok” is never spoken in Return of the Jedi, but if you stop anyone on the street and ask them to name the cuddly Star Wars teddy bears, everyone knows what they are, even if they aren’t an avowed fan. If pressed, it’s doubtful anyone could even name a single Avatar character.Mind you, we re not talking about Avatar s industry impact here. As a delivery system for the next evolution in 3D technology, it was truly groundbreaking, and it sparked an obsession with 3D movies that still hasn t quite abated (although audiences have seemingly caught on to the idea that not everything needs to be seen this way remember Baz Luhrmann s disastrous The Great Gatsby?). No, what we re talking about here are fans. Rabid, canon-obsessed fans, who pick apart every detail, cosplay in meticulous costumes, cover their desks and computers with figures and collectibles, and perhaps most importantly, keep the story alive on their own through fanfic, home made movies, and artwork. It s here that Avatar s impact is barely felt at all.Ryan FujitaniSci-fi fans don t need a ton of fodder to latch on to a property, either. Joss Whedon s Firefly didn t even air a full season and fans rallied around it so passionately that they willed a movie into existence, kept spin-off comic books on the shelves, and still show up at conventions and fests proudly displaying their browncoat allegiance. Star Trek was a ratings flop when it first aired, but planted enough fan seeds that it eventually went from cult series to movie franchise to extended, multi-timeline, multi-format colossus. Akira was a single, standalone anime film from 1988 and you still see its iconic poster repurposed for everything from Batman to Seinfeld. Blade Runner was a bomb but still got comic book spinoffs and unofficial merch. When was the last time you saw someone wearing an Avatar shirt? A quick Google search for “Avatar fan films” brings up a lot of results… for the Avatar: The Last Airbender anime series. In honor of the movie’s 10th anniversary, let s consider some of the factors that may contribute to Avatar s struggle to gain a fandom foothold, and whether or not the planned sequels can help.Avatar Was An Experience, Not A Story(Photo by ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved courtesy Everett Collection)It’s kind of fitting that Avatar got a recent boost from the announcement of a Disney World theme park based on the planet Pandora (albeit a short-lived boost; interest waned the minute the ribbon was cut on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge), because Avatar has always been about an immersive experience more than a gripping story. Soon after the film’s release, you began to see stories about “Avatar Depression” – people who loved virtually sailing through Pandora so much that they were sad they couldn’t actually live there (America being neck-deep in a throttling recession didn’t help). The idyllic jungle world was so detailed and beautiful – especially in 3D – that people just wanted to exist inside it. The characters and plot, neither of which were especially well crafted, seemed to just get in the way. Cameron himself even hinted at this during the press tour, saying to the Los Angeles Times:“You’ve got to compete head on with these other epic works of fantasy and fiction, the Tolkiens and the Star Wars and the Star Treks. People want a persistent alternate reality to invest themselves in and they want the detail that makes it rich and worth their time. They want to live somewhere else. Like Pandora.”Avatar the film had become like one of those videos they show while you wait in line for a theme park ride. You sort of half pay attention – yeah, yeah, blah blah blah – while you anticipate strapping in and blasting off. People didn’t see themselves in the characters the way Trekkies saw their own scientific curiosity reflected in the crew of the Enterprise, or leave the theater wanting to be any of them the way every young boy left Star Wars believing Han Solo was the coolest person in any star system. Which brings us to…It Was Populated by Bland, Forgettable Characters(Photo by ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved courtesy Everett Collection)Who left Avatar wanting to be Jake Sully? (And again, raise your hand if you actually remembered that Jake Sully was the name of Sam Worthington’s main character.) Part of it can be blamed on Worthington’s thoroughly charisma-free performance, but it’s not like bad acting in sci-fi has ever been a hindrance (take a bow, Mr. Shatner). It’s more that the characters seemed stock and, again, like an afterthought. A fanbase grows when you capture the audience s collective imagination, but that has to go beyond visuals. No one wants to necessarily live on Tatooine, but you want to imagine more adventures for Luke. The crew of the Serenity is made up of scoundrels and misfits scouring the intergalactic old west – they can literally go anywhere and run into anyone. You like them, so you want to see them in new adventures, even if it means writing them yourself.Between the generic scientists, the stoic, one-note Na’vi, and the bland corporate villain, Avatar just provides no grist for the fan mill. Who’s writing the further adventures of Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore)? It’s All In the Timing, Maybe? (Photo by Mark Fellman TM & Copyright ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved/Courtesy Everett Collection)Some argue that Avatar, being an original standalone movie without any pre-existing source material, faced a steeper hill to climb than some others. But a lot of sci-fi films could claim that very same thing at the time of their release and still have fanbases to show for it. Of course, the intense labor involved in making one of these films made it impossible for Cameron to strike while the iron was hot. In fact, he just recently announced completion of principle photography on Avatar 2 (which was received with very little fanfare) and that movie still won’t be done until December 2021. Without fans keeping the flame lit through fanfic and cosplay and general enthusiasm, it just feels like an anti-climactic, “Oh yeah, Avatar. I remember that.” For a movie that made billion in 19 days, this is an incredibly unlikely place for it be.Cameron is also no George Lucas, in the sense that Lucas never had qualms about selling Star Wars, and in fact devised new ways to sell and re-sell it over the years to keep that enthusiasm firing away. There were new theatrical versions, new toys, new games, and new fashion brand tie-ins seemingly every year. Cameron doesn’t have that kind of hucksterism in him, and is content to let the movie speak for itself. Which may be why it’s lost some steam over the past decade. But for better or worse, the sequels (plural, as Cameron has teased at least three more installments) will really be the test of whether or not Avatar can develop anything close to a rabid fandom. He has promised to go deeper into the mythology and ecosystem of Pandora, which may help stoke some of the dormant wanderlust people experienced in 2009. But it’s a gamble — a big, unwieldy, expensive gamble. Not only do the films have to reignite interest in the story after 12 years, they have to overcome the fact that the franchise may not have the wow factor it once did, now that bloom is off the 3D rose. It’ll be a challenge, and so far, Avatar has found an enthusiastic core of fans to be mostly unobtanium.Avatar was released on December 18, 2009.九游会官网网站This Week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (those stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Batman and wait, you only want to know about The Batman, right? OK, here we go This WEEK S TOP STORYRobert Pattinson In Talks for The Batman, Along with Nicholas Hoult(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection, @ Warner Bros. Pictures, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)British actor Robert Pattinson made his film debut as Cedric Diggory in 2005 s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire but he s probably still most recognized for playing the vampire Edward Cullen in the five Twlight Saga films. Now in his 30s, Pattinson has lately been focusing on independent and non-Hollywood films like Good Time, High Life, The Rover, and The Lost City of Z. Thursday night, the news broke that Pattinson is now in talks to continue his relationship with Warner Bros. (which produced the Harry Potter films) in one of their highest-profile upcoming projects, the DC Comics adaptation The Batman. That report came from Variety, but some competitors are cautioning that the deal with Pattinson is not final, with Nicholas Hoult (Tolkien, About a Boy) also in the running, if Pattinson does not sign on. The Batman will be the first solo movie for the DC Comics superhero since The Dark Knight Rises, and will be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), whose most recent film was 2017 s War for the Planet of the Apes. Pattinson s next film for Warner Bros. will be an untitled Christopher Nolan s project (July 7, 2020), with The Batman scheduled nearly a year later on June 25, 2021.Fresh Developments1. The Next Star Wars Trilogy, Kicking off in 2022, Comes Via the Game of Thrones Showrunners(Photo by Gregorio T. Binuya/Everett Collection)Much has been made this week about the declining Tomatometer scores for the last two episodes of Game of Thrones, but seen from the big picture, the show still retains an impressive 91% Tomatometer score. Having said that, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Pictures may have been better off announcing this week s news earlier in the month. Last week, Disney confirmed that the Star Wars franchise will take a three-year hiatus after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (December 20, 2019) with new films every two years thereafter (December 12, 2022; December 20, 2024; December 18, 2026). This week we learned that the first of these new Star Wars films in 2022 will be produced by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. That revelation came with almost no other details, but there are lingering rumors that their Star Wars project will be set in the same era as the Star Wars: The Old Republic video games. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is also reportedly working on a new Star Wars trilogy.2. The Real Mandarin will appear in the MCU(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)As it turned out, Thanos was the big bad of the first 20 or so films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If we look back to the original Iron Man, however, the villain that was being teased was the Mandarin, one of Iron Man s oldest arch-nemeses. The road to the Mandarin continued in 2013 with Iron Man 3, and the All Hail the King Marvel One-Shot short film, but we have not yet seen the Mandarin in his classic form. This week, in a Reddit AMA, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige directly addressed The Mandarin, answering Yes to a question about future plans for the character. As to when we might see the Mandarin, one strong and obvious possibility is the Shang-Chi movie, which is currently in active development.3. Sebastian Stan Joins Lupita Nyong o and Jessica Chastain in Spy Movie 355(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Something that we point out all the time here is that there have been so many Marvel movies by this point that many new films have at least a couple of Marvel stars (especially if we can include the Fox movies). Jessica Chastain (who s joining the club with next month s Dark Phoenix) is producing and starring in a new international spy movie called 355, which will start filming on July 8 in Paris before moving to London and Morocco. 355 will feature several female costars, including Lupita Nyong o (Black Panther), Penelope Cruz, and Fan Bingbing (Blink from X-Men: Days of Future Past). We can now also add to the cast Sebastian Stan, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, and Edgar Ramirez (who costarred with Penelope Cruz in TV s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story). (Marion Cotillard had previously been attached to costar but has recently dropped out.) The title 355 is a reference to Agent 355, a female spy during the American Revolution.4. Rami Malek Finds Denzel Washington s Little Things(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek recently signed on to star in the next James Bond film as the its villain, and this week, he signed on for another new project. Malek is in talks with Warner Bros. to join Denzel Washington in the police crime thriller The Little Things. Washington will play a burned-out cop up in Kern County who teams with Baxter (Malek), a crack detective from the LA Sheriff’s Department, to catch a serial killer. The Little Things refers to Washington s character s ability to see the little things that can help solve a case. 5. Emma Thompson Joins Emma Stone In Disney s Cruella(Photo by @ A24)Walt Disney Pictures is proceeding, a few movies a year, in their far-reaching plans to adapt their classic animated movies into live-action films (including next week s Aladdin). Just last week, Disney announced a release date of December 23, 2020 for Cruella, their live-action reimagining of the villain character from 101 Dalmatians. Emma Stone has been attached for a while to play Cruella in the film, which will be set in the world of high fashion of the 1970s. Another Emma, Emma Thompson, signed on this week to play the film s antagonist, which also gives us a better idea about the premise (basically, it s a prequel to 101 Dalmatians). Stone s version of Cruella will be a brilliant clothing designer who nonetheless toils as a lowly department store worker. One day, a posh woman known as the Baroness (Thompson) enters the store, wearing Cruella’s special locket that was given to her by her mother, leading Cruella to plot against her. Cruella is scheduled to come out five days after Coming to America 2 and Steven Spielberg s West Side Story, and the same day as The Croods 2.6. Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, And Morgan Freeman Team Up on The Comeback Trail(Photo by @ Broad Green Pictures, © Vertical Entertainment /Courtesy Everett Collection, ©20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./Courtesy Everett Collection)Every few years or so, we get another movie that brings together a few older movie stars. Tommy Lee Jones starred in Space Cowboys (with Clint Eastwood, James Garner, and Donald Sutherland), and then in 2013, Robert De Niro and Morgan Freeman costarred in Last Vegas (for just two examples). The latest such movie is called The Comeback Trail, and the stars this time around will be De Niro and Freeman again, plus Jones. De Niro will play a man in debt to a mob boss (Freeman) who creates an insurance fraud by casting washed-up, suicidal cowboy/movie star Duke Montana (Jones) in a poorly written Western with the intention of killing him during the first days of filming. Zach Braff (of TV s Scrubs) will also costar in The Comeback Trail as De Niro s business partner.#7. Chris Rock (!?) delivering Saw Spin-off for 2020(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection, @ Lionsgate)Way before James Wan directed movies like The Conjuring and Aquaman, he was actually the director of the very first Saw movie in 2004 (and he produced several of the sequels). The torture-trap horror franchise is on its way back to theaters for next year (October 23, 2020), but it s coming to us via a celebrity producer in the form of Saturday Night Live alum Chris Rock. Rock is reportedly a longtime fan of the Saw movies and came to the untitled Saw spin-off with his own pitch for how to start a new story that is not a reboot, but one that will work within the existing Saw mythology. The new Saw movie will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, the director of Saw II (37%), Saw III (28%), Saw IV (18%), and 11-11-11 (7%) – but could the involvement of Chris Rock and James Wan turn things around?Rotten Ideas2. James Wan Producing Mortal Kombat RebootJoel MearesLast week s Pokémon Detective Pikachu may have broken box office records, and also have the first ever Fresh Tomatometer score for a video-game adaptation, but one movie doesn t make for an instant rebound for the entire concept. Regardless, Hollywood is still chugging along with its collective plans for video-game movies, and this week, we learned that Mortal Kombat is one of the already attempted (a few times) video game franchises that s coming back. Producer James Wan is on board this attempt at rebooting Mortal Kombat, which is scheduled to start filming in Australia later this year. It s not yet clear which Mortal Kombat games or characters will be adapted for this new movie.  The first Mortal Kombat was Rotten with 46%, and its sequel Annihilation was much lower with just 2%. With Wan on board, the reboot could nudge Fresh territory, but we re waiting to see.1. Can Paramount Take On Marvel With Obscure Atlas Comics Movies? The biggest challenge for any movie studio that s not Disney or Warner Bros. in challenging their superhero movies is that there is only one Marvel Comics, and only one DC Comics. Sure, there are other comic book companies, but none of them are the big two. One company that briefly tried to get into their space in the 1970s was Atlas Comics, formed by Martin Goodman, the original founder of the 1930s company that later became Marvel Comics. Atlas Comics launched with dozens of titles and some notable writers and artists, but they mostly were all cancelled within three or four issues. Paramount Pictures has regardless started an agreement to adapt Atlas Comics titles into superhero movies. The possible movies include such titles as The Cougar, Ironjaw, Tigar-Man, Grim Ghost, and The Hands of the Dragon. We re calling this play by Paramount one of the week s Rotten Ideas just because taking on Marvel and DC seems crazy: Atlas Comics was never going to, and still isn t, ever going to compete with titles like The Avengers, Justice League, or X-Men. But then again, remember when folks thought Iron Man was too obscure to launch a franchise Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

TV news didn t rest over the weekend — instead, DC Universe, AMC, History, BBC America, and more network shared news with reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday. Read on to find out new intel on Killing Eve, Knightfall, Doom Patrol, and more.TOP STORYHow Doom Patrol Sets a New Tone for DC TVThere’s plenty of source material available for the showrunners of Doom Patrol, DC Universe’s second live-action series, to choose from when breaking stories. Showrunner Jeremy Carver said the series dips into several different versions of the characters in the series.“A great jumping off point is the Grant Morrison run in the ’90s,” Carver told reporters at a Television Critics Association winter press tour panel in Los Angeles over the weekend. “We dip into the Silver Age where we are seeing the Celsius and Lodestone characters. We’re going to see some other characters that have graced over the years, such as Danny the Street. We’re going to see one of my more beloved characters, the Beard Hunter.”While most of DC’s television properties live on the CW, land of the perma-shirtless, sexy twentysomethings, this cast includes decidedly non-twentysomethings Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, and Alan Tudyk. But fans of DC’s CW series will not be put off by the age-diverse cast of Doom Patrol, which premieres Feb. 15.“I think DC has made a decision, quite smartly, to separate the feature world and the television world,” executive producer Sarah Schechter explained. “I don’t think there’s been any confusion, and comic books have always had multiple versions of the same character, created by different writers, different artists, with different adventures. I think it’s really fun, I think that the two work really nicely together, and help fans to experience fully the characters that they love.”What Do Killing Eve and Harry Potter Have in Common (Besides Fiona Shaw)?(Photo by Aimee Spinks/BBC America)New Killing Eve showrunner Emerald Fennell took over for the Emmy-winning series’ second season from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who focused on the second season of her Amazon series, Fleabag, instead). But star Sandra Oh told reporters at the show’s TCA panel that the transition between the two was seamless.“Emerald and Phoebe are friends and had been friends for a long time,” Oh said. “I feel like they have a kinship — the sensibility, where they come from, their humor, their style. And Emerald has her own voice entirely, but it really moves from one hand to a similar hand.”When the series comes back to BBC America on April 7, it’ll pick up approximately 30 seconds after the events of the season 1 finale, and Eve (Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) will be at odds once again. The duo said that their characters’ relationship will definitely evolve in season 2.“I think what is most interesting about Eve’s stabbing Villanelle at the end of series 1 is Villanelle’s reaction to that, and just how emotionally she perceives that. And I think it both affects them and changes them in a way neither of them are quite expecting,” Comer said.(Photo by Aimee Spinks/BBC America)Added Oh, “And I think you see them vulnerable in slightly different ways. They’ve crossed the line and there’s no going back. I think we have a lot of energy at the beginning of the series, and that pushes both of them into a different place of vulnerability.”The characters are inextricably linked to one another, much like two other famous literary characters from the past 20 years — Harry Potter and He Who Must Not Be Named, of course, where neither can live while the other survives.“I kind of like the Harry Potter theory,” Comer said.Joked Fennell, “So Villanelle’s a Horcrux.”In all seriousness, though, the characters’ true relationship is still being explored.“It’s something that we’re also still figuring out and finding the pieces to as we play out scenes on set, which is actually really exciting, Comer said. I actually really like the fact that we can’t put our finger on it.”New Knightfall Star Mark Hamill on the Ties Between the Knights Templar and Star Wars’ JediThe Star Wars film saga s Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill, joins the second season of History’s Knightfall as Talus, a tough, wise, hardened, and devout master who trains new members of the Knights Templar and who spent 10 years being tortured as a POW during a Crusade. Hamill told reporters at a TCA panel for the show that he never intended taking on a project like Knightfall, but was hooked after watching a few episodes.“I just thought, ‘I’ve never been offered anything like this before.’ I mean, I’d never done a character quite like this before — a religious zealot, a man of deep convictions, and, yet, such a paradox, Hamill said. He’s lecturing the troops and he says, ‘Once you become a Templar knight you shall become God’s executioners.’ How could there be such a thing? I thought, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ But that’s the thing, I was flattered that they would think of me in such a diverse character part, and I thought, ‘Oh, I have to do this. I really do have to do this,’ to be part of a largely British cast and in a period drama like this, which I’d never done before. That’s what I look for: challenges to try not to repeat yourself, and this was certainly a challenge.”It’s no secret that the Knights Templar inspired another secret order Hamill has been a part of (Star Wars’ Jedi, duh). But the ties between the two actually didn’t occur to him until he’d already said yes.“I didn’t really think it through, but the truth of the matter is that I’m sure George Lucas came from so many different inspirations of his own, both from the movies and literature, Hamill said. He was probably thinking more of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, because it was more idealized and glamorous, certainly, than the Templar Knights, but there’s no question that his inspiration was rooted, partially, in this mythology.”Pennyworth Creators Explain Why Batman’s Butler Needs an Origin Series(Photo by Epix)Fox’s Batman prequel series, Gotham, is coming to an end this year. But more pre-Batman stories will continue to be told on television in Epix’s Pennyworth, an origin story about the early life of Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon).“It’s really the chance to make him the center of a story and explain that journey: How did he get from being a young SAS soldier to being a butler in America? And it also gives us a chance to create a real world around him, a world in England that fits the whole DC universe,” executive producer Bruno Heller said. “It’s surprising to all of us the depth and range that you can go to with this character.”While the character’s creator, Bob Kane, set the 1930s as Alfred’s origin, but the Epix series is set in the 1960s. Executive producer Danny Cannon said that as someone from London, that seemed like the most dynamic time period to set a show.“It’s after the war, before things change for good. You could see the change in the air. Things were happening, culturally, artistically, that — it was an inspiring time, I think, that English people always revisit,” Cannon said. “So, to say that that was the foundations of which we were starting with and then making it 13 degrees more DC, 13 degrees darker [is when the series] really came alive for us.”The Story Behind NOS4A2’s Title(Photo by Zach Dilgard/AMC)The people involved in AMC’s new supernatural horror series NOS4A2 know that the title (pronounced like “Nosferatu”) is a little bit out of the ordinary. But the series, which stars Zachary Quinto as a vampire of sorts who feeds on the souls of children, is based on the book of the same name by Joe Hill (who happens to be the son of Stephen King), and series creator Jami O’Brien said the cast and producers are going to do their best to educate the audience about it.“One of the wonderful things about the book is that there are a lot of word games in it. One of the characters is a Scrabble master and librarian. And I think that the title itself, you know, Manx [played by Quinto] talks about it deeper in the book than where we get in the first season, but it’s a joke. And it’s also a puzzle,” O’Brien said. “And I think both of those things speak to the humor of the book and the humor of the character and is kind of a fun twist on the vampire genre, you know? Charlie Manx is a kind of vampire, but he’s not any kind of vampire that we’ve seen before. He doesn’t suck blood. He sucks souls. So, I think it’s a little irreverent, and I think — I’m glad that we have it because I think it’s a lot of fun.”

The initial reactions to Avengers: Endgame following the first screenings were extremely positive. But now critics have had time to process what they saw, and well, they’re still mostly raving about the 22nd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it s currently Certified Fresh at 97%. Of course, there are some quibbles here and there, mainly about the length. Also, the long-form responses to the Avengers: Infinity War follow-up have some extra thoughts to share regarding Endgame’s best moments, as well as the movie’s MVP. Basically, just icing on the cake to get you even more hyped for this thing. Here’s what the critics are saying about Avengers: Endgame:How does it compare to Avengers: Infinity War?Endgame is a different type of film than Infinity War… there are actually moments of calm, where the audience can catch its breath. Charles Barfield, The PlaylistInfinity War floundered, it seems, so Endgame could soar. Angie Han, MashableWhere Infinity War had trouble finding time for characters, Endgame is about nothing but character work.  Susana Polo, PolygonThe Russo Brothers were able to best themselves yet again. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorThere’s something considerably less elegant to the storytelling this time around. Peter Debruge, VarietyIs it the best Marvel movie yet?Avengers: Endgame is everything you’ve ever dreamed a Marvel movie could be…You will not be let down.  Germain Lussier, io9One of the most ambitious, entertaining, emotional, and stunning blockbusters we’ve ever seen, and the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon thus far.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendAvengers: Endgame is not the best Marvel movie ever made…But it is the most Marvel movie ever made, and there s something incredible about that. Angie Han, MashableAvengers: Endgame is the most Marvel movie in Marvel Cinematic Universe history. Charles Barfield, The PlaylistAvengers: Endgame is, without a doubt, the most confusing and convoluted of any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, yet it’s also unbelievably satisfying. Mike Ryan, UproxxAvengers: Endgame is now my favorite MCU movie and is probably my favorite comic book movie to date. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorIt’s not the best of anything in terms of the Marvel franchise…Avengers: Endgame is a merely okay MCU movie. Scott Mendelson, Forbes(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)Should we be surprised at this?Whatever you think Endgame will be, it will still confound and amaze and thrill you in ways that is hard to imagine.  Mark Daniell, Toronto SunOne of the nicest surprises of Endgame is how fun it is… So much so that the three-hour run time seems to fly by. Angie Han, MashableThere are things in Endgame you never could have guessed would come back to light, but they do, and it’s glorious. Germain Lussier, io9Endgame is truly a masterful piece of storytelling, which both goes exactly where you expect it to, and not at all. Anne Cohen, Refinery29(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)How busy is the movie? The Russos juggle the tones with balletic finesse.  Eric Kohn, IndieWireThe film is sometimes juggling five or six stories simultaneously, but the Russos and their editors never let the audience get too far from one or the other. Germain Lussier, io9It’s strangely sentimental for a movie that features the biggest all-out superhero fight I can ever remember seeing.  Mike Ryan, UproxxHow is the action? The fight scenes that do take place are epic… seeing the epic battle in the third act makes the last decade worth it.  Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe action sequences were choreographed and shot so beautifully. Charles Barfield, The Playlist[It’s] a moment to stop and look back in amazement (or terror) at what the MCU has pulled off…Endgame is Marvel s crowning achievement. Angie Han, MashableHow lost will we be if we haven t seen all 21 previous movies? There’s no shaking the fact that Endgame is very much a Part 2 (or Part 22, honestly)… not for MCU newbies… casual fans need not apply  If you’re not someone that knows every character by name, you’re in for a confusing three-hour film. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendRyan FujitaniCan you give me some comparative context?Newcomers to the series may as well be watching a Transformers movie. Eric Kohn, IndieWireWhile there is a big third-act action sequence, it’s (despite some grand fan service) closer in structure and visuals to Ready Player One than The Two Towers. Scott Mendelson, ForbesAvengers: Endgame feels like the last scene of Titanic with everyone back on the ship, applauding. And, you know what? I’m okay with that. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmAre there any big criticisms? Its biggest fault, however nitpicky, is that it doesn’t really confront or advance any of the big philosophical questions that have been running through the saga from the beginning. 4.17.0 9月喜迎Josh and Benny Safdie had something of a coming-out party last year with Good Time, a kinetic thriller that showcased some of the best work of star Robert Pattinson‘s post-Twilight career. The Safdies decided to follow that up with another tense drama, this time starring frequent critical whipping boy Adam Sandler, and most critics agree the risk paid off in spades. In Uncut Gems, Sandler plays Howard, a New York City jeweler with a self-destructive gambling addiction who regularly places sporting bets with money that doesn’t belong to him. Howard comes into possession of a rare, uncut Ethiopian opal that captures the attention of NBA star Kevin Garnett, which leads to a series of ill-advised collateral swaps, basketball wagers, and mob-style shakedowns as he attempts to pay off his debts by selling the stone at auction. Critics say the Certified Fresh Uncut Gems is a relentless thrill-ride that amps up the anxiety at every turn and benefits from stellar work by its cast, especially Sandler, who had some folks pegging him for a Best Actor nod at the Oscars. He’s proven in the past that with the right material, he can pull off serious roles like nobody’s business, and this is quite possibly his best effort to date. The film is unnerving and propulsive, and it should lead to even bigger opportunities for the Safdies. [Note: This film opened in limited release on December 13, but expands into wide release this week.]
This weekend felt like a crucial mid-term for theatrical releases. Between the hybrid release controversies of the summer and the continued lack of attendance for non-IP originals, particularly those aimed at adults, it is still anyone’s guess what we are headed for come the holiday movie season. Barring the return of some new surge of virus infections (at least those numbers are headed in the right direction) people will hopefully feel safer filling seats at their local theaters. They certainly had a choice this weekend between staying home and buying a ticket. The latter won for one film while the former created some dismal numbers for another, casting a shadow over anything not part of a franchise the rest of the year.King of the Crop: Halloween Kills its Hybrid Release with million Debut(Photo by Universal Pictures)Before the pandemic, the focus on this weekend’s #1 movie would have been the drop from its predecessor’s million start in 2018. Halloween Kills’ million weekend is a 33.8% drop from three years ago, but even that can be put in a positive perspective looking at other sequel drops of this stature over the years. Among R-rated sequels to films opening over million, 300: Rise of an Empire (36.4%), Ted 2 (38.4%), Paranormal Activity 4 (44.8%), Sex and the City 2 (45.6%), The Matrix Revolutions (47.1%), and The Hangover Part III (51.5%) all dropped further. Alien: Covenant fell 29.1% from Prometheus but didn’t have nearly as far to fall as Halloween Kills did, leaving It: Chapter 2 (26.2%) and Deadpool 2 (5.23%) as the higher standards. The point is that this is a really terrific number for David Gordon Green’s sequel..4 million is the sixth-best opening of the pandemic. As it marks the third consecutive week of a film opening over million, that statistic may quickly become an afterthought, though it shouldn’t. Where Halloween Kills busted the ceiling this weekend was in the hybrid streaming wars. After it was announced the film would simultaneously premiere on the Peacock service the same day it premiered in theaters, its chances for widespread theatrical success appeared to be kneecapped. The first film was a rather frontloaded success story, posting just a 2.09 multiple over its opening weekend. Halloween Kills may be down 34% from the 2018 opening, but it is up 58% from the year’s best hybrid HBO MAX openings, with Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy each in the million realm. Kong already had a two-day head start with .4 million prior to the weekend and to date is the only hybrid release (sans an additional fee) to crack the 0 million barrier. And that was a March 31 release that took over 11 weeks to reach that milestone. Halloween Kills is already halfway there in just three days.Kills also nearly doubled up The Suicide Squad (.2 million) for the best “R”-rated opening of the year in any release strategy. 54 million Peacock subscribers at last count compared to roughly 73 million for HBO MAX. (And those are late July numbers.) The five biggest WB/HBO MAX openings dropped like flies in their second weekends Godzilla vs. Kong (56.9%), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (57.1%), Space Jam: A New Legacy (69.1%), The Suicide Squad (71.5%), and Mortal Kombat (73.2%). 2018’s Halloween fell 58.8% to .4 million in weekend two, so there’s a good chance Kills falls below million next weekend, especially if people realize they actually have Peacock on their cable service. Those who actually still have cable service.Rotten Returns: Ridley Scott s The Last Duel Reinforces a Grim Trend(Photo by 20th Century Studios)What may actually be the bigger story this weekend is the continuing failure of non-IP films aimed at adults to draw them in. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was speculated to at least get into eight-digit territory this weekend. Its fate was all but sealed when it opened to just 0,000 in previews Thursday night, and the final numbers were even worse than imagined. The historical drama with a cast boasting Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck grossed a mere .8 million this weekend. That is less than Damon in Stillwater did this summer (.18 million) and the worst start for a Damon-led film opening in over 3,000 theaters. The previous low was We Bought a Zoo (.36 million), which nevertheless went on to gross over million over its 2011 holiday season release. There is a strong chance that The Last Duel will not even be able to leg itself out enough to outgross All the Pretty Horses (.5 million) or Stillwater (.2 million), leaving it as the third-lowest grossing Damon-led film ahead of only Suburbicon (.77 million) and Promised Land (.59 million), both of which were released in fewer than 2,050 theaters. The story is far grimmer than anything surrounding Damon’s perceived star power, though. The Last Duel represents a continuing trend in the pandemic box office for anything other than a sequel, franchise, universe-builder, or Disneyland ride to break out among audiences. Free Guy, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Old are the only films outside of those categories to gross over million this year. The Last Duel is about to become the third theatrical-exclusive film released this year in over 3,000 theaters that fails to gross even million. The Top 10 and Beyond: No Time to Die Takes Aim at 0 Million(Photo by Nicola Dove/©MGM)No Time To Die missed the opportunity to become the fifth film of the pandemic to gross 0 million in its first 10 days; instead it will take 11. With .3 million this weekend (a 56% drop) the 25th James Bond film is just shy of the milestone. That is a slightly better second weekend than F9 had ( million), though Bond is still nearly million behind its pace while also about million ahead of A Quiet Place Part II’s 10-day run. The film has a good chance to stick around the Top Five into just before Thanksgiving (and could hang on enough into that holiday) so we’ll stick with a final gross between 0-170 million domestically. Globally the film is over 7 million and could actually surpass F9’s 6 million to become the highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.Venom: Let There Be Carnage fell to .5 million (the second-best third weekend of the year), bringing its total to just over 8 million, still on a very solid pace for 0 million. That is about million below Shang-Chi’s third weekend and overall about million behind its 17-day pace. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings drove its total to over 8 million and is going to settle into the 5 million territory, suggesting that the Venom sequel will come in somewhere around the original Venom’s total of 3 million. The Addams Family 2, which is also on VOD for .99, is not far behind the pace of The Boss Baby: Family Business, which was also streaming on Peacock s subscription tiers. That animated film finished with over million. Addams looks to be in line to come in between -55 million. A24’s odd folktale, Lamb, managed to stay put in eighth place, falling from just over million to 3,000 and driving its total to million. Not too shabby, all things considered, and the studio can put this on its mantle along with the knowledge that David Lowery’s The Green Knight is going to outgross Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.On the Vine: A Timothée Chalamet Double Feature with Denis Villeneuve s Dune and Wes Anderson s The French Dispatch(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures)Fear is the mind killer next week when Denis Villeneuve hopes people will take his advice and see his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune on the big screen instead of watching it from their sofas on HBO MAX, which will begin streaming the film Thursday night. Actually theaters and the home service will be showing Dune: Part One, as the opening title card announces it. There is no release date or production start date for Dune: Part Two. Also finally opening is the animated film, Ron’s Gone Wrong, and Wes Anderson’s latest, The French Dispatch.Full List of Box Office Results: October 8-10, 2021

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Dungeons Dragons, Hello Kitty, and Searching 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU HAS BEGUN FILMING HIS NEXT PROJECT(Photo by ©Roadside Attractions courtesy Everett Collection)Getting a feature film produced is difficult enough, even without the spectre of the COVID-19 pandemic looming over society for the past year or so. Just over five years ago at the 88th Academy Awards, Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant (Certified Fresh at 78%), which also won Best Cinematography and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and this week, Iñárritu was finally able to start filming his first feature film in the five-plus years since. The project, called Limbo, is now filming on location in Mexico City. Iñárritu also wrote the film, which doesn t yet have an official synopsis, except that it explores the political and social modernity of Mexico. Iñárritu s choice to film in Mexico City following his Hollywood success with The Revenant could also be compared to Alfonso Cuaron s Roma (Certified Fresh at 95%), which was filmed in Mexico City following his own Hollywood success with Gravity (Certified Fresh at 95%). No casting announcements have been made yet for Limbo.Other Top Headlines1. J.J. ABRAMS HIRES FIRST FEMALE STAR TREK FEATURE SCREENWRITER(Photo by Paramount Pictures)It was just last week that producer J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company hired award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to work on the new Superman reboot (featuring an actor of color as the lead, for a historic first). This week, Abrams moved forward with another first as Bad Robot has hired screenwriter Kalinda Vasquez to work on the next Star Trek feature film. This project should not be confused with the Star Trek that Quentin Tarantino was announced as partnering with Abrams and Bad Robot in 2017 (as that one appears to have cooled down in the years since). If Vasquez s work on this project makes it to production, she will become the first woman ever to write a Star Trek feature film. In addition to serving as executive producer on shows like Runaways, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, and Fear the Walking Dead, Kalinda Vasquez has also written episodes of all of those shows, plus four episodes of Prison Break and seven episodes of Nikita. It is not yet known if her Star Trek project will introduce a new cast or use one of the previous casts (like say, the Kelvin crew of Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, etc.) Paramount Pictures does not currently have any Star Trek feature films on the studio s release schedule.2. ANNETTE BENING TO PORTRAY RECORD-BREAKING SWIMMER DIANA NYAD (Photo by Suzanne Tenner/©Focus Features)Diana Nyad is a record-breaking long distance swimmer whose accomplishments include swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, swimming from Jamaica to Florida, and swimming around the island of Manhattan in under 8 hours. Nyad s amazing life is now set to be adapted as the biopic Nyad, with four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening attached to star. Nyad will mark the narrative feature film directorial debut of the team of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for their 2018 documentary Free Solo (Certified Fresh at 98%), which depicted a similar form of endurance sport (free solo mountain climbing). Nyad is being adapted from her autobiography Find a Way, with filming expected to start sometime this summer.3. RUSSELL CROWE TO STAR AS ABSTRACT ARTIST MARK ROTHKO (Photo by © Universal Pictures)There have obviously been dozens of biopics about famous painters, but so far, we have relatively few to date about abstract painters (Pollock, Certified Fresh at 80% starring Ed Harris, is a notable exception). That field will soon expand as the life of artist Mark Rothko is about to be portrayed by Russell Crowe in Rothko. Mark Rothko is best known for his color field paintings of large fields of bright colors in squares or rectangles. Rothko will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy). The Rothko cast will include Irish actress Aisling Fraciosi (as Rothko s daughter), Jared Harris, Michael Stuhlbarg, and the director s husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro from Marvel s Avengers: Age of Ultron). Adapted from the book The Legacy of Rothko by Lee Seldes, Rothko will focus on the protracted legal dispute between Kate Rothko and the painter’s estate executors and the directors of his gallery, Marlborough Fine Art, which you can read more about here.4. MELISSA MCCARTHY TO PORTRAY MAJOR MARVEL VILLAIN IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER SORT OF (Photo by Hopper Stone/©Columbia Pictures)Some of the funniest surprises in Taika Waititi s Thor: Ragnarok (Certified Fresh at 93%) came early in the film when we first saw some Asgardian actors depicting the events of earlier Thor movies, including Matt Damon as Loki, Sam Neill as Odin, and Chris Hemsworth s brother Luke Hemsworth as Thor. There has been a fair amount of new coverage of actors like Matt Damon returning to Australia for filming of the fourth movie, Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), but this week, we actually heard about someone new. Several photos have emerged online this week of comedic actress Melissa McCarthy in costume on the sets in Australia as the villainous character Hela, as portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok, with the other actors-playing-actors like Matt Damon also on set with McCarthy. In similar news, we also learned this week that the upcoming sports comedy sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy (7/6/2021) will also feature cameo appearances by some of Warner Bros other film properties, including Batman, Mad Max, and Casablanca.5. THIS WEEK IN MUSICAL BIOPICS: BOB MARLEY, AND ROBBIE WILLIAMS (AS A MONKEY?)  (Photo by Everett Collection)Although both films are now a few years old, the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 89%) continue to have a ripple effect on other musical biopics getting produced. That includes musical biopic projects which have languished in development for years, or in some cases, decades. The life story of famed reggae musician Bob Marley is one such example. Paramount Pictures is finally getting closer to production with the news this week that the studio has hired director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who comes to the Bob Marley biopic even as he continues work on another biographical film, King Richard, about the father (played by Will Smith) of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In a sad coincidence, the movement on the Bob Marley biopic comes in the same week that saw the passing of Marley s musical partner Bunny Wailer at the age of 73. British pop star Robbie Williams is also getting a biopic called Better Man to be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). In a bizarre revelation, this week, Deadline reported that the role of Robbie Williams will be portrayed by a CGI monkey, apparently, quite seriously.6. DUNGEONS DRAGONS MOVIE CASTS DETECT EVIL SPELL ON HUGH GRANT (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Actor Jeremy Irons has had a film career with many great heights, but one of his lowest lows may have come in 2000, when he starred as the evil villain in the first Dungeons Dragons feature film (Rotten at 10%). One has to speculate that Hugh Grant is hoping for a better result with his decision this week to take the role of the main villain (called Forge Fletcher) in the new Dungeons Dragons movie (5/27/2022). Sophia Lillis, who has recently starred as both Nancy Drew and Beverly in the IT movies, has also take a role as a character named Doric (neither of these names seem to point towards popular characters from existing D D stories). This new Dungeons Dragons reboot is being written and directed by the team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also collaborated on Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%). It is not yet known if the Dungeons Dragons movie will be set entirely in a fantasy world, or if some part of it might also depict real world players. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis are joining a cast which already includes Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith.7. WRINKLE IN TIME STAR STORM REID MAY GET LOST IN SEARCHING 2 (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although it wasn t a box office blockbuster, the independent social media mystery drama Searching (Certified Fresh at 92%) was still a surprise hit relative to its budget. Jon Cho and Michelle La starred as father and daughter in the first Searching, but apparently for the upcoming sequel, a new cast is being sought as the formula will be applied to a new family and setting. We don t know specifically how different or similar the sequel s premise will be, so we have relatively little to guess on, but we can report that 17 year old actress Storm Reid is now in talks for a lead role in Searching 2. Reid made her feature film debut in 12 Years a Slave, had the lead role in A Wrinkle in Time, and is also one of Zendaya s co-stars in HBO s Euphoria.8. HELLO KITTY FINALLY GETTING HER BIG SHOT AT THE MEOW-VIES (Photo by Saban International courtesy Everett Collection)The Japanese design company Sanrio has had over 45 years of success with their popular Hello Kitty character, including in the United States, but for the most part, attempts to carry Hello Kitty over in formats like TV or the movies have not taken off outside of Japan. Back in October of 2019, we reported that New Line Cinema had acquired the film rights to Hello Kitty, but we hadn t heard much since then. This week, we finally got confirmation that the studio is actively developing a Hello Kitty feature film that will combine live action and animation (like this week s Tom and Jerry). New Line Cinema has hired two directors for their Hello Kitty movie: Jennifer Coyle and Leo Matsuda. Coyle s credits as director include 23 episodes of DC Super Hero Girls and 13 episodes of Bob s Burgers, while Matsuda s credits are mostly as an animator or story artist on projects like The Simpsons Movie, Wreck-It Ralph, and Zootopia.9. JONATHAN MAJORS TO STAR IN MILITARY DRAMA 892(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)One of the shows that premiered right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic when many people were hungry for something to binge was HBO s spooky Lovecraft Country, starring Jonathan Majors. In the months since, Majors was able to translate that show s success to a new gig at Marvel Studios as one of the company s most prolific super villains, Kang the Conqueror, in the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (TBA 2022). This week, Majors signed on for another project, which will be a drama called 892 about a marine war veteran who suffers from PTSD. In somewhat related news, following recent allegations, rapper-turned-actor T.I. will not be returning for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania after co-starring in the first two Ant-Man movies. It is unclear if this was always the plan, or if Marvel Studios is making the change based on the allegations against T.I. and his wife Tameka Tiny Harris. Likewise, we also don t know if the other Ant-Man supporting characters played by Michael Peña and David Dastmalchian will be returning or not.On an Apple device? In the first season, we were introduced to a Ramy who was very much yearning to step into his higher self, while continually being pulled into the trappings and desires of his lower one. In the finale, our hero journeyed to Egypt, looking to connect with his cultural roots. But as the saying goes, one step forward, two steps back. Just as he thought he was on the right path, a death in the family knocked Ramy off track and he ended up making a terrible decision: He fell in love with his cousin, and then he had sex with her.As you d expect, the fallout of this choice puts Ramy right back into his funk. When Ali s Sheikh enters his life, he brings a sense of guidance that will hopefully put Ramy back on the righteous path. I think a character like Sheikh Ali is an embodiment of that and I really wanted that for the show, Youssef says. I think we have a lot of people struggling with that and I really wanted to show somebody who was transformed by the faith. Transformation is really what Ramy is looking for. (Photo by Hasan Amin/Hulu)Youssef s quick to point out the many types of Muslims that exist throughout the world: African, South Asian, and Middle Eastern, to name a few. According to Youssef, having Ali stepping into the role of the Sufi Sheikh was a very American thing. Historically, Black people have been the first Muslims in this country; the first big Muslim presence and, kind of, have the longest link here, he said. And so it s interesting to have that here when you have, within other Muslim communities like Arab ones or South Asian ones, a lot of anti-Blackness. It was just this idea that someone like him would be carrying what Ramy wanted. It felt like something I was really excited to have for our audience. Demystifying the general public s perception of Muslims in America is a big goal to achieve, and Youssef s quick to admit he s not trying to create a public service announcement with his series. However, as the show continues to explore the world through his experiences, and that of the members of his family, he s hoping the story will continue to connect on a human level with viewers, no matter their race, religion, or gender.(Photo by Craig Blankenhorn/Hulu) We try not to take sides or positions, and more-so just complicate the conversation, because I think it s really hard for a comedy to be instructive or a comedy to be, you know, kind of telling people what to think or what s right, he says. Rounding out conversations that sometimes are a little too one dimensional, that really is the goal of the show. As for authenticity, Youssef wants to remind viewers that he s just one type of Muslim and while his show is working to represent the culture and religion as a whole, this story is specific to his experience. I think audiences are kind of in an unfair situation because there s so little content that speaks to anything even close to what they re going through, he says. So I think a show like mine has a lot of, you know, expectations on it. But that really comes out of scarcity, as opposed to entertainment value. I m very sympathetic to that. And so all I hope is that people can really see the humanity in these characters, see the conversations that we re trying to complicate, and that we kind of bring some more depth to things. Hopefully. Ramy season 2 premieres on Hulu on Friday, May 29, 2020.

It is a convention like no other – some would say to its detriment – as film, television, games, and even comics bring their top talent and offer exclusive first looks at upcoming products. But more than being a giant pop-up shopping mall, Comic-Con is an experience filled with unexpected moments. The show is celebrating its 50th year this week and we could not help but be nostalgic about its past and some of the biggest moments in its wild history. Or, at least, the biggest moments in regard to the convention s relationship with film and television. Though there was always a media presence at the show, it really solidified its power in the 1990s, becoming a driving force in the new century. Naturally, though, the connection between comic books and other media will permeate this list as there would be no Comic-Con experiences without them. With that in mind, these are the 21 Comic-Con moments we remember most from 50 years of an awesome con.21. The San Diego Convention Center Expands And Hall H DebutsComic-Con first moved to the San Diego Convention Center in 1991. At the time, it comprised halls A-C. After the Convention Center expanded in the early part of the century, the show moved into hall D in 2001 and halls E-G the next year. The added space allowed media companies to put out big displays – like the Time Machine prop from the 2002 remake and an early Masters of the Universe toy revival – while leaving halls A-C as the domain of comics and collectables traders. The completed 2002 expansion gave us the current size of the exhibition floor, but 2004 would prove to be one of the most important years in terms of the convention s overall size with the debut of Hall H. At the time, it was just a 6,000-seat event space, but it would soon become one of the keys area of the entire venue.20. The X-Men Panel Gets Pulled At The Last MomentIn 1999, studios were still getting their footing in bringing talent to Comic-Con in an organized way. In the case of 20th Century Fox, this meant bringing some footage from their upcoming X-Men feature to Room 6AB (the Hall H of its day) along with director Bryan Singer and producer Lauren Shuler Donner. The room was full of excited fans, but after a brief shot of the White House on the projection screen, a Comic-Con staffer announced the panel had been canceled. This was before Singer’s alleged improprieties became public, but it may be an example of his legendary tardiness. It also highlights how recently the convention became a highly regimented publicity machine. Cancelling a panel after its scheduled start time would never happen today.19. Flynn’s Arcade Reopens(Photo by Michael Buckner/Getty Images)Off-site activations made it possible for those not going to Comic-Con to still enjoy some of the fun. And in a number of ways, 2009 s Flynn’s Arcade – a promotion for the then-upcoming Tron: Legacy – set the tone for the most successful pop-ups. Designed to recreate the arcade from the original Tron film, guests could play classic arcade games like Galaga before the Tron arcade cabinet lit up, revealing a whole new area of the exhibit. Inside, guests saw concept sketches for the film and a full-scale lightcycle prop. They also walked away from the hip event with Flynn’s Arcade t-shirts and a memory of something genuinely unexpected from Comic-Con. The immersiveness and quality freebies of Flynn s Arcade continue to influence activations, such as 2017 s Blade Runner 2049 experience.18. Hellboy Debuts In San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 (1993)For a time, Comic-Con published a free comic book in association with Dark Horse Comics. The second yearly issue featured Mike Mignola’s first sketch of Hellboy. The character was mostly formed, even if his dark destiny and the BPRD were still a year or so from debuting in the pages of Dark Horse s first Hellboy series, which would eventually become the basis for Guillermo del Toro s 2004 Hellboy feature film. The character’s debut, however, illustrates how big Comic-Con things can happen literally in the pages of a comic book.17. Bryan Cranston Roams The Exhibit Floor As Walter WhiteSetting off a tradition of sorts – though there were some precursors – Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston surprised fans in 2013 when he revealed he was roaming the exhibition floor ahead of his panel dressed as the show s lead character, Walter White. Decked out in khakis and a plaid shirt, Cranston completed his disguise with a disturbingly life-like pull-over mask of his own face. Since he had a video crew with him, you would think more people would’ve guessed what was happening, but he correctly surmised most con-goers would assume it was a YouTube thing. Since that time, plenty of stars have used disguises to get some shopping done or experience the crowd. But few have pulled it off with such panache. Well, except maybe Matt Smith and his use of a Bart Simpson mask during the same convention.16. Lost Finds Early FansIf there was one hot topic following the 2004 Comic-Con, it was the screening of the Lost pilot. In an early attempt to bring a wider cross-section of genre shows to Comic-Con, ABC screened the first episode to a crowd of people vaguely aware of J.J. Abrams and/or Matthew Fox. It started a buzz which led the early adopters to make Lost one of the greatest Comic-Con success stories thanks to their talk of polar bears and potential dinosaurs. Granted, the dinosaurs turned out to be Jacob in the end. This was the moment television really took hold at Comic-Con, a mutually beneficial relationship which continues to this day.15. The Star Wars: Force Awakens Concert(Photo by Michael Buckner/Getty Images )A more recent big moment came during the 2015 Comic-Con when Abrams made a triumphant return to the show as the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While he played coy about plot details with the panel moderator, he wowed the Hall H audience by inviting them to a concert of Star Wars music performed by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Most of the 6,000 attendees (with lightsabers in hand) followed Abrams to a nearby concert stage on one of the jetties behind the convention center. But anyone still inside Comic-Con for Friday night programming – like, say,  the Klingon Lifestyles Presentation – could still hear the event and the fireworks following the performance.14. Quentin Tarantino Misses The Kill Bill PanelIn 2003, Quentin Tarantino planned to regale fans with tales of his then-upcoming Kill Bill. His old pal Michael Madsen would be with him and they would show the audience assembled in Ballroom 20 the trailer for Volume 1. But one thing Tarantino did not plan for was an accident on the southbound Interstate 5 Highway earlier that day involving a truck filled with fiberglass insulation. It took hours to clean up and Tarantino missed the panel entirely, leaving a bewildered Madsen to answer questions from the audience. Over the years, the southbound I-5 has bedeviled con-goers thanks to exotic spills of crude oil, mattresses, and even meat formerly ready for store shelves. This moment is in honor of all the people who brave the roadways to get to Comic-Con. Tarantino, meanwhile, made sure to book extra travel time for subsequent Comic-Con panels promoting Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight.13. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Takes Over Both Hiltons, Hall H, And The Balboa TheaterWhile Flynn’s Arcade may be the most memorable off-site activation, Universal’s 2009 domination of Comic-Con to promote Scott Pilgrim vs. The World may be the biggest film rollout ever executed at the event. Utilizing exhibit space next to the Hilton Gaslamp, the pop-up offered a look at the film, a really awkward standee of star Michael Cera, and a bar where fans could get custom-made t-shirts. There was even ice cream at certain parts of the day. The movie poster was painted onto the tower of the nearby Hilton Bayfront and, in a show of strength, the studio arranged for the film to be screened over three evenings at the Balboa Theater up the road – though the first night was a surprise for all those who attended the Hall H panel. Considering the film’s origins and tone, Comic-Con was its key market and the studio made a tremendous effort to treat con-goers like royalty. The film itself may have faded from the public consciousness, but Universal s attempt to court the Comic-Con crowd will always be remembered.12. Kevin Feige Suggests Movie CrossoversThankfully, video exists of a 2006 Marvel Studios panel in which Kevin Feige was asked about a potential crossover between its characters. This was still before any of the grand designs were known beyond the planned films based on Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor. Nonetheless, Feige offered this response: There s no coincidence that that may, someday, equal the Avengers. Having that possibility on the horizon is something that excites all of us.” Little did anyone know at the time that it would all become a reality, although those in attendance cheered at the mere suggestion. In hindsight, his stumbling through the response suggests he knew he was giving the game away. It would be the last time Feige would ever offer such a straightforward answer in public.11. The Dark Knight Orchestrates A Joker Scavenger Hunt(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)The Dark Knight’s marketing campaign was one for the ages with Harvey Dent rallies and fans getting phone calls to see the first nine minutes of the film. But one of the best stunts involved a scavenger hunt across San Diego’s Gaslamp district. Clues were literally written in the sky and handed out by people in Joker attire – the alleged perpetrator of the scavenger hunt. In the end, participants were awarded a link to The Dark Knight s online teaser, but for those ordered by the Joker to adopt his signature make-up, it was one of the best Comic-Con publicity stunts ever executed.10. Harrison Ford Escorted To The Stage In HandcuffsIn another case of best laid plans going awry, Harrison Ford’s first Comic-Con appearance was overshadowed by one of the most infamous moments to ever occur in Hall H. Shortly before Ford’s panel – a promotion for the in-production Cowboys and Aliens – was set to start, an argument over a seat at the back of Hall H turned into a violent scene with one man stabbing another in the eye with a pen-knife. The hall was locked down and programming delayed while San Diego police rushed in. The perpetrator was taken into the custody, the victim went to the hospital, and when the panel finally began, director Jon Favreau and Ford went ahead with a joke they planned long before the incident – Ford came onto stage in handcuffs and escorted by security. The idea: Ford had to be dragged from the set to make his first Comic-Con appearance. But thanks to the stabbing, the moment read in a very different light. It also eased the brewing tension in the hall that night.9. Ryan Reynolds Recites The Green Lantern OathThe 2011 Green Lantern film is little more than a punchline star Ryan Reynolds uses in other, better comic book movies. But before the film s fate was decided, it had its Comic-Con moment during a 2010 Hall H presentation when a little boy asked Reynolds what it felt like to recite the Green Lantern oath. After taking a moment compose himself, Reynolds said, it sounds a little something like this and recited the oath from memory. The boy, visibly moved by the performance, showed Reynolds his child-sized Green Lantern ring. The actor responded by showing off its big budget movie counterpart. Over the years, questions from children have led to man memorable moments, but few are as pure as this.8. Zack Snyder Shares A Dark Knight Moment From Batman v Superman(Photo by Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images)Back before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice divided online fandom, director Zack Snyder was happy to share a first look with fans in Hall H during the 2016 Warner Bros. Pictures presentation. The scene featured Ben Affleck’s Batman in an armored suit ready to go 10 rounds with the Man of Steel (Henry Cavill). The scene, heavily influenced by a similar sequence in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns suggested a certain tone for the movie and a wish-fulfillment for the director. And for those in attendance, it sparked a hope about DC’s film universe which never quite came to fruition. But in that moment, all things seemed possible.7. The Ravagers Invade Marvel Studios 2015 PanelBefore we knew how important Taserface (Chris Sullivan) would be to the shape of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – a recurring punchline – Marvel brought Sullivan, along with the rest of the Ravagers, to the Hall H stage in full makeup. Emerging from the back of the hall, the group played at harassing fans and mocked the panel moderator from afar. When they finally made their way to the dais, Sullivan and Sean Gunn answered questions as Taserface and Kraglin in a routine far funnier than it had any right to be. In a presentation which featured the debut of the first footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming and Brie Larson’s first public appearance as a MCU cast member, it stands as the most delightful moment of that year, thanks mainly to Sullivan’s dedication as Taserface.6. The Iron Man TrailerBeginning a tradition which continues to this year – with a few pauses along the way – Marvel Studios brought its first clip to Comic-Con in 2007: a four minute version of the first Iron Man trailer. Extending some of the scenes in which Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) built his first suit in a cave with a box of scraps, the silence among the crowd (punctuated along with a few laughs thanks to Tony s quipping) lingers today as the palpable sense that this movie was different. The audience finally exploded into cheers when the Mark I Iron Man suit made its debut, confirming this was the film almost every comic book fan was waiting for. The intensity only grew as the trailer revealed the Mark III suit and Iron Man flying with an escort of fighter jets. An auspicious beginning to the studio s near-dominance of the convention in the years to come.5. Andrew Garfield Cosplays As Spider-Man To Crash A Panel(Photo by Wendy Redfern/Redferns/Getty Images)Hall H Q A sessions are known for awkward questions, the Button Lady, and the Hunter S. Thompson impersonator. But the single best Q A moment ever came in 2011 when The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield crashed the panel in a cheap Spider-Man costume complete with mask and a fanny pack. Playing the part of an eager fan, he told the crowd it was his dream to be in Hall H – as Spider-Man – with the cast and crew of the new Spider-Man movie. Then, he pulled off the mask to stun the audience. “I always wanted to come here as a fan,” he said after the reveal. “So here I am, as a fan.” But perhaps more affecting was his nervousness as he read a prepared statement about what Spider-Man meant to him. Beyond being a great Comic-Con moment, it may be the best moment in the whole Amazing Spider-Man endeavor.4. Loki Addresses The Hall H AudienceBut a few years later, Garfield’s moment would be superseded by the first of Marvel Studios in-character appearances. With the Hall H lights dimmed, the voice of Tom Hiddleston boomed, “Look how far you’ve fallen.” The cheers quickly rose as fans realized what was happening. And with a flash, Hiddleston was on stage in costume and in character as Loki. Proceeding to give a speech similar to the one in Marvel’s The Avengers, the God of Mischief commanded the Hall H crowd to swear their loyalty to him. In exchange, they would “feast” their eyes on Marvel Studios’ 2013 offerings. The clearly thrilled Hiddleston hammed it up, other key announcements were made during the panel, but Loki s speech still stands as the studio’s most successful Hall H stunt.3. Star Wars Debuts At Comic-ConLong before the Hall H spectacles, however, an upcoming film called Star Wars made a modest debut at the 1976 San Diego Comic-Con. Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin appeared to talk up their Marvel Comics adaptation with the movie while Lucasfilm rep Charles Lippincott showed stills from the film. While there were definitely empty seats, it would prove to be an influential hour as the con-goers in attendance witnessed a legit sneak peek of the film that would change everything. And that Comic-Con had it first tells you it was always capable of forecasting the next big pop culture thing; even in its earliest days.2. The Avengers Assemble(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Saturday in Hall H during Comic-Con 2011 stands in memory for so many things. There was the stabbing, Harrison Ford’s appearance, the debut of footage from Cowboys Aliens, Captain America: The First Avenger – which had only begun shooting four days earlier – and the premiere of the 3D trailer for Thor. Then there came a teaser trailer in which the voice of Samuel L. Jackson told of the day when Earth s mightiest heroes would stand together as the Avengers. Afterward, the stars of Marvel’s The Avengers – Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo – assembled for the first time ever. Though they did not take questions, the audience was receptive to the moment while photographers blinded everyone in attendance. It was the capstone of the convention that year and the beginning of still so much to come.1. Twilight And Avatar Duke It Out Over Hall HBut one moment stands above all the others as the moment of Comic-Con. It was the event which changed the show from a celebration of the popular arts to the pop-culture event everyone wanted to be at: the announcement that The Twilight Saga: New Moon and James Cameron’s Avatar would appear back-to-back in Hall H during the 2009 convention. Originally, the Avatar presentation was scheduled first, but memories of the way Twilight fans camped out in Hall H in 2008 left Cameron’s fans in a tizzy, worried the Twilight fans and their dedication would mean missing 25 minutes of Avatar. Comic-Con switched the time slots with New Moon starting before Avatar, but it was indicative of the way the show was changing. Phenomena outside of comics were coming to San Diego and proving to be successful. Securing a Comic-Con badge became more difficult and camp-outs to get into Hall H became the norm. The modern excitement, and occasional frenzy, was born here. From then on, Hall H was really the place to be and line management became a pressing concern for convention organizers. For those of us on the ground, it was an amazing thing to witness and changed the way we planned for Comic-Con forever.Like this?
