Bassinger admits that she did enjoy the days when she got to be harnessed into wires, such as a scene when she slides across the Staff in an early episode. But there were some things Bassinger purposefully avoided in an effort to make this Stargirl her own, such as opting not to watch Britt Irvin portrayal of the character on Smallville or Sarah Grey’s on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Both of those shows featured an older version of the character who was not the lead, while this iteration allows Bassinger to devote more time to developing Stargirl’s backstory.“I feel like playing younger characters is just more fun and, Courtney specifically, is like a optimistic funny character,” says Bassinger, who until now was mostly known for Nickelodeon shows like Bella and the Bulldogs and that network’s TV adaptation of School of Rock. “While a good dramatic scene is fun every once in a while, it s nice just to be more lighthearted, I feel like, on a day-to-day basis.”(Photo by DC Universe)Although Stargirl isn’t officially part of The CW’s “Arrowverse” collection of shows that include The Flash and Supergirl, fans did get a glimpse of some of these characters during the network’s elaborate Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover episodes, which aired this past winter and famously feature the heroes from other programs. Bassinger says there were talks of other crossover opportunities before the coronavirus pandemic shut down Hollywood this spring, but she doesn’t know how it will happen now – especially since her show’s chronology might not match up with the others’ (these programs rely on a multiverse theory, or the concept that infinite universes exist, and while Stargirl is part of Earth-1, not every character is). There’s also the issue with the title of her character. These shows run for years (The Flash, for example, is in its sixth season). Eventually, her character will grow up and leave high school. Does that mean her name may ever be changed to Starwoman?“I think she’ll always be Stargirl,” Bassinger says. “Like, even in the comics when she ages, she’s always Stargirl.”Stargirl premieres Monday, May 18 on DC Universe and has its broadcast premiere on The CW on Tuesday, May 19 at 8/7C.

Two of Netflix’s biggest titles are returning this month for a summer binge — and that’s just the half of it! With the reboot of Veronica Mars on Hulu, the final season of Suits on USA, and Sarah Jessica Parker still charming away on HBO, there’s plenty to keep us busy in front of the small screen. Catch up on it all below.Divorce 78% (HBO)What it is: After reaching household-name status and everygirl envy on Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker makes her way back to prestige TV’s small screen with Divorce, where she stars as Frances, a middle-aged mother and beleaguered wife to Robert (Thomas Hayden Church), who, after having an affair, realizes they’d both be better off without having a ring on it.Why you should watch it: Parker has always been a fine actress, and she puts her well-practiced on-screen skill set to excellent use here, mining creator Sharon Horgan’s (Catastrophe) emotionally hefty and darkly humorous scripts with empathetic aplomb. Season 3 premieres July 1 on HBO.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, HBONow, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 9 hours (for the first two seasons)Stranger Things 93% (Netflix)What it is: A dark mystery overtakes a rural Indiana town when the young Will Byers goes missing and a young girl with a shaved head and telekinetic abilities appears. Something sinister and supernatural has come out to play — and that’s just the pilot! So buckle up. Why you should watch it: It was the synth-laden soundtrack heard ’round the world three summers ago when Stranger Things dropped out of nowhere onto Netflix and took us all by storm. A back-to-form Winona Ryder, career-best David Harbour, and breakout stars by way of all its kids (but particularly Emmy nominee Millie Bobby Brown) are pitch-perfect and paired with plenty of ’80s-era horror nostalgia to make you want to watch this series again and again — and there ain’t nothin’ strange about it. Season 3 streams July 4 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 17 hours (for the first two seasons)Harlots 97% (Hulu)What it is: Set in 1763 London, Hulu’s Harlots charts the lives of sex workers in two warring brothels, one led by Margaret (Samantha Morton) and the other by Lydia (Lesley Manville). The series, from creators Alison Newman and Moira Buffini, is a period drama inspired by the true-life accounts documented in The Covent Garden Ladies by Hallie Rubenhold, but don’t let its nonfictional nature bore you: Harlots is more juicy than dry.Why you should watch it: Harlots is so much more than a show about sex — in fact, that subject is met with less titillation and more sterile professionalism. It instead subs in rich and complex characters, mostly women, and a backdrop that allows for explorations of gender and class in 18th century England. Furthermore, Oscar nominees Morton and Manville get the chance here to showcase just why they’re both widely considered British acting royalty. Season 3 premieres July 10 on Hulu.Where to watch it: Amazon, HuluCommitment: Approx. 12 hours (for the first two seasons)Snowfall 87% (FX)What it is: Created by the late John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron (the latter of whom serves as showrunner), Snowfall follows in the footsteps of other FX dramas like Atlanta in that it tells the story of an ostracized community in ways that we haven’t seen before — this time by dramatizing the rise and breakout of the first crack epidemic in 1984 Los Angeles and its greater impact on American culture at large. Why you should watch it: As riveting as it is eye-opening, this street crime series pulls no punches in its portrayal of the drug trade and its implications in both micro and macro spheres. Startling performances from its ensemble of relative newcomers also bring us into a world that until now has been left off narrative television — and they keep a hold on us there. Season 3 premieres July 10 on FX.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first two seasons)Grantchester 95% (PBS)What it is: Fans of period drama from the other side of the pond will have plenty to sink their teeth into with Grantchester. All is not as it seems in the series’ titular village, and clergyman Sidney Chambers (James Norton of the excellent Happy Valley) is caught in the middle, balancing his faith and obligatory duties while investigating a series of crimes in the area. Why you should watch it: Based on James Runcie’s book series and adapted for the screen by Daisy Coulam, this U.K. transfer from ITV has drama to spare. While at face value it may seem like the prim and proper British drama, underneath this clerical collar are festering secrets and dark pasts that bubble to the surface over the course of Grantchester’s hour-long episodes. Each season is only six installments, so there’s plenty of time to binge and catch up before season 4 premieres July 14 on PBS.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first three seasons)Suits 90% (USA)What it is: Creator Aaron Korsh struck gold in 2011 with this popular legal drama — and it’s got nine acclaimed seasons to prove it! The premise is simple: Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) is a law school dropout and brilliant fraudster who, upon impressing New York City’s top closer, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), lands a job as Harvey’s associate despite not having a license to practice law. But Mike proves that he’s up to snuff, and together he and Harvey work to keep his sordid past and illegitimacy a secret. Why you should watch it: Suits came into the international spotlight in recent years thanks to a new royal named Meghan Markle, but if that wasn’t reason enough for you to catch up on this USA Network affair, we’ve got a few more for you. The series works because it’s in on its own fun, and its high concept rags-to-riches premise rings true thanks to the chemistry of Adams and Macht. It’s a steep order to binge eight seasons, of course, but the show’s two charming leads and a formidable supporting cast have kept us coming back for more. Suits’ ninth and final season premieres July 17 on USA. (Fittingly, its new spin-off series, Pearson, also premieres that night on USA.)Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 94 hours (for the first eight seasons)Workin' Moms (Netflix)What it is: Creator and star Catherine Reitman plays the leader of a central group of friends and working moms as they make the transition from maternity leave back to office life. Why you should watch it: Being a mom is a full-time job paid in sleepless nights, dirty diapers, and, of course, unconditional love. Pair the laundry list of responsibilities that come with that job with a salaried 9-to-5, however, and tragic comedy is sure to ensue. That’s where Reitman comes in, translating it all for this semi-autobiographical sitcom. The Canadian series has already aired three seasons across the border; season 2 is finally making it to Netflix in the U.S. July 25.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first season)Orange Is the New Black 90% (Netflix)What it is: Jenji Kohan’s runaway (but locked-up) Netflix hit is ensemble work at its finest, following the day-to-day lives of the ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary and exploring the diverse crimes that got them there. Why you should watch it: Inspired by Piper Kerman’s (here Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling) real-life account of her arrest and imprisonment for drug-related money laundering, this hour-long dramedy opens up to include the equally heartbreaking (and often humorous) biographies of fellow inmates played by Emmy winner Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Samira Wiley, and others. From season to season, Orange — revolutionary and acclaimed for its on-screen diversity — becomes more and more timely, tackling everything from trans rights to gender equality to Black Lives Matter. Its seventh and final season streams July 26 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 68 hours (for the first six seasons)Veronica Mars 91% (Hulu)What it is: Set in the fictional town of Neptune, California, Veronica Mars follows the criminally charming Kristen Bell as our titular hero who cracks mounting mysteries as a high schooler and self-started private investigator. Why you should watch it: Veronica Mars is a CW cult classic from the early 2000s with an especially impassioned fanbase (its 2014 feature film was fully funded on Kickstarter) — and there’s no better time than now to see what all the hype is about. Its long-awaited fourth season returns July 26 on Hulu.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 48 hours (for the first three seasons)The Letdown 91% (Netflix)What it is: They say misery loves company, and The Letdown has that in spades, charting the ups and downs of being a first-time mother through the eyes of Audrey, a woman trying to keep her head above water while being more than “just a mom.”Why you should watch it: This Australian comedy from creators Alison Bell and Sarah Scheller (the former of whom also stars) finds the pitch-black humor in newborn motherhood with the richly dry humor and self-deprecation native to its home country. Season 2 streams in full July 31 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 3 hours (for the first season)Like this? Adam Sandler could be eyeing his first Oscar nomination if the buzz out of Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival for his newest film, Uncut Gems, is anything to go by. Reviews for the Safdie brothers (Good Time) latest are glowing, with critics singling out Sandler for career-best work as a jewelry dealer in Manhattan’s Diamond District who finds himself pursued by criminals when a precious gem goes missing. Rotten Tomatoes Editor Jacqueline Coley spoke to Sandler and co-stars Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield, and Julia Fox in Toronto, where the raves were still pouring in. The four talk about working with the Josh and Benny Safdie, two of cinema’s most sought-after and buzzed-about directors; sharing the screen with NBA legend Kevin Garnett and musician The Weeknd; and finding pockets of calm on the set of such a kinetic film.BOB全站app手机客户端Best-Reviewed Horror Movies 2019It was a banner year for horror – in fact, the only year with an overall Fresh rating for the genre in decades. And it kicked off with a bang: Jordan Peele’s Get Out follow-up, the doppelganger invasion thriller and audacious social satire, Us, blew minds at its South By Southwest premiere in March and stayed top of the year’s horror pack for the nine months that followed. It was quite a year for other second features, too, with Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse and Ari Aster’s Midsommar doubling up on the “elevated” horror they provided with their debuts, The Witch and Hereditary. Issa Lopez, whose Tigers Are Not Afraid delivered artful fantasy chills, will next direct a werewolf film under the eye of producer Guillermo del Toro. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2019. This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Ant-Man 3, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the Madonna biopic. This WEEK S TOP STORYLOVECRAFT COUNTRY S JONATHAN MAJORS CAST AS MAJOR ANT-MAN 3 VILLAIN(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Although the Marvel Comics characters are now all under the same corporate banner, the many years during which 20th Century Fox had the rights to Fantastic Four and X-Men had a very deep impact on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe was initially shaped. Specifically for The Avengers, some of their major villains were actually first introduced in Fantastic Four issues, so technically, it was Fox that had the rights to those characters. For example, that s ostensibly why the Skrulls were replaced by the Chitauri in The Avengers (although they were eventually available for Captain Marvel). Another major Avengers villain who was off limits was the time-travelling Kang the Conqueror, who was a Fox property because he is a future descendant of Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four (it should be noted that Kang s background is super convoluted and includes stories in which he s actually Reed s father). Marvel made a major move towards incorporating Kang the Conqueror into the MCU this week by casting Jonathan Majors, the star of HBO s Lovecraft Country, as a major villain in Ant-Man 3 that most sources are speculating will indeed be Kang the Conqueror. Kang is an obvious natural fit to be introduced in Ant-Man 3, as Paul Rudd s Scott Lang has already helped introduce time travel elements, most notably in Avengers: Endgame. Film and comics journalists were, of course, quick to start writing their Who is Kang the Conqueror? and What does Kang the Conqueror mean for the MCU? pieces. There is no current release date for Ant-Man 3, but the delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic suggest that it probably won t come out until sometime in 2023 (or late 2022 at the very earliest).Other Top Headlines1. CHRIS HEMSWORTH DEFINITELY NOT GIVING UP PLAYING THOR ANYTIME SOON (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Walt Disney Studios)Whenever Thor: Love and Thunder comes out (tentatively 2/11/2022, depending upon the COVID-19 pandemic), it will make Thor the first MCU character to receive a fourth solo film (Captain America and Iron Man both stopped at three films each). One of the most publicized details about Thor: Love and Thunder has been the revelation that Natalie Portman will be returning as her Jane Foster character, who, as in the comics, will be come the new female incaration of Thor. That has understandably led some fans to speculate that Chris Hemsworth would therefore be retiring his run as the character, but this week, in an interview, he responded to that theory very directly. Hemsworth said, Are you crazy?! I m not going into any retirement period. Thor is far too young for that. He s only 1,500 years old. It s definitely not a film that I say goodbye to this brand. At least I hope so. It s also worth noting that in the comics and at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor has sometimes traveled with the Guardians of the Galaxy, so it s possible that even if Portman takes over one version of Thor, Hemsworth could continue as another. In related news, Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, Perry Mason) was cast this week as Bruce Banner s lawyer cousin She-Hulk in the upcoming Disney+ series. It s not yet been confirmed whether She-Hulk might someday cross over into the MCU movies, but several other of the shows (such as the first two, WandaVision and The Falcon and Winter Soldier) obviously do. In the comics, She-Hulk has been a member of various versions of The Avengers (including the all-female A-Force team) and also had a long run in the 1980s as a member of the Fantastic Four.2. MADONNA TO DIRECT HER OWN MUSICAL BIOPIC (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Although there have obviously been dozens (hundreds?) of major biopics about major celebrities, it is relatively uncommon for the film s subject to be directly involved besides possibly as a producer or screenwriter. There have been a handful of films in which where the celebrity played themselves, but the only movie that this writer can think of that the star subject actually directed was Richard Pryor s Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling (and even that film was a fictionalized version of Pryor s life). Of course, Madonna has sort of made an entire career out of doing things differently (which is in itself a biopic trope ), and so the news was not really that surprising this week that she will be directing her own biopic. The Univeral Pictures project doesn t yet have a title (though Material Girl seems like an obvious choice?), or a confirmed star to actually play the young Madonna (though recent rumors speculated Ozark star Julia Garner might have it after Madonna started following Garner on Instagram). We ve known that Madonna was working on something for a few months now, because earlier this year, Madonna revealed that she and Juno (Certified Fresh at 94%) screenwriter Diablo Cody were working on a project during their COVID-19 quarantine time. It s not yet known if Madonna will be writing any new music for her biopic, or if the actress playing her will do her own singing in the role.3. CHRIS ROCK WRITING SCREENPLAY FOR DAVE CHAPPELE AND SNL PAL ADAM SANDLER (Photo by Kristin Callahan, Priscilla Grant, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Since the show first started in the 1970s, the success of Saturday Night Live has led to an unintended division of sorts between comedians and comic actors: the SNL alumni and everybody else. One comedian who didn t graduate from the long-running NBC institution is Dave Chappelle, who instead starred in his own popular sketch show, Chappelle s Show, from 2003 to 2006. Chris Rock, on the other hand, is a former SNL star who frequently works with his old SNL pals, including Adam Sandler and David Spade. It appears that Rock wants to bring Chappelle into that fold, because the former revealed this week that he has written a new screenplay that he is giddy about that he hopes he can co-star in alongside both Dave Chappelle and Adam Sandler. Rock didn t get into any details about the story, and it s also not yet known if this would be a feature film, or possibly part of Adam Sandler s ongoing Netflix package deals.4. ANIME BOX OFFICE CHAMP YOUR NAME GETTING LIVE-ACTION REMAKE(Photo by ©FUNimation)If you d like to stump one of your anime-loving friends, you could ask them if they know what film currently holds the all-time box office record for an anime feature film. The answer is not any of the obvious guesses, like, say, a Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli film (though Spirited Away is indeed #2), a Pokemon movie, or a beloved futuristic sci-fi film like Akira or Ghost in the Shell. Nope, with over 8 million worldwide box office, that film is 2016 s Your Name (Certified Fresh at 98%) (released in the USA in 2017), Makoto Shinkai s romantic fantasy about a young couple who seek to rediscover each other after briefly swapping bodies, Freaky style. An English-language live-action remake of Your Name is now in active development, with Toho and J.J. Abrams Bad Robot production company co-producing for Paramount Pictures. Lee Isaac Chung, who won both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at this year s Sundance Film Festival with his film Minari (Fresh at 100%), is already signed to direct and rewrite the Your Name remake, based off an earlier screenplay draft by Emily V. Gordon (co-writer of The Big Sick, Certified Fresh at 98%). Minari was picked up by A24 for release in the USA, but its release appears to have been held back in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.5. SARAH SNOOK TO STAR IN NEW ADAPTATION OF JANE AUSTEN S PERSUASION(Photo by Graeme Hunter/HBO)Movies based on the works of Jane Austen have never really gone out of style, but just within the last few years, we ve gotten new adaptations like Love Friendship (Certified Fresh at  97%), Emma. (Certified Fresh at  87%), and although it wasn t a direct adaptation, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Rotten at 45%). Jane Austen s last novel, published posthumously in 1817, was Persuasion, and like most of her work, it has been adapted for film and TV several times, though arguably not as famously as her first five novels (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Northanger Abbey). The two most famous versions of Persuasion were both produced for television (in 1995 and in 2007), but now Fox Searchlight is preparing a full feature film version. Australian actress Sarah Snook, who is probably currently best known for HBO s Succession (for which she s nominated for an Emmy this year) is now signed to star in Persuasion, which will be directed by Mahalia Belo in her feature film debut from a screenplay by Jessica Swale (Summerland, Certified Fresh at 76%). Snook will play the lead, Anne Elliot, who is forced to reconcile her feelings when the naval officer she once rejected returns to England as a celebrated and wealthy ship s captain (that role is yet to be cast).6. PETER DINKLAGE S TO PRODUCE AND STAR IN PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER KEITH (Photo by HBO)Peter Dinklage really has been staying quite busy since wrapping his role as Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones, with several films either wrapped or preparing for production. (One of those films, the animated sequel The Croods: A New Age, was just bumped up a month from its original December 23 release to Thanksgiving Wednesday, on November 25.) Searchlight Pictures is now partnering with Dinklage, who will executive produce and star in a psychological thriller called Keith. That s, however, all we know about the premise, as it s being kept under wraps, but we can probably guess Dinklage might play Keith? Keith is expected to fit in with other genre movies that Searchlight Pictures has recently released or has coming soon, including Ready or Not, Antlers, and Guillermo del Toro s remake of Nightmare Alley.7. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO REUNITE WITH SOUTHPAW DIRECTOR FOR REMAKE OF DANISH THRILLER(Photo by Scott Garfield/©Weinstein Company)Jake Gyllenhaal was out this week (as much as one can be out during COVID-19) promoting his latest film, Netflix s The Devil All the Time (Fresh at 65%), which he produced, starring his Spider-Man: Far from Home co-star Tom Holland. As often happens, this was also an opportunity for one of Gyllenhaal s future film projects to be announced, and that s exactly what happened. Jake Gyllenhaal will reunite with his Southpaw (Rotten at 59%) director Antoine Fuqua (who also directed Training Day and The Equalizer) for an English-language remake of the 2018 Danish drama The Guilty (Certified Fresh at 97%). Gyllenhaal will star as a 911 call center operator who finds that his attempts to save the life of a caller lead him into a mystery where nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out. 8. SELENA GOMEZ READY TO SPOOKILY TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT WITH HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 4(Photo by ©Sony Pictures Releasing)Although the franchise obviously has a large ensemble cast of comedy voice actors, the Sony Pictures Animation hit Hotel Transylvania (Rotten at 45%) and its sequels have mostly been described in the press and marketing as Adam Sandler movies. For Hotel Transylvania 4, which is currently scheduled for release on August 6, 2021 (up against James Gunn s The Sucide Squad), Sony Pictures made a move this week that suggests the focus of the sequel may tilt more towards Dracula s daughter Mavis, voiced by Selena Gomez, as Gomez has effectively been promoted to the role of executive producer on the film (a title also held by the franchise s creator Genndy Tartakovsky). Hotel Transylvania 4 will be directed by the team of Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon, who are currently best known for their work on the animated TV shows DC Super Hero Girls (Kluska) and SpongeBob SquarePants (Drymon).9. NEW VOICE STARS FOR SEQUEL THE BOSS BABY: FAMILY BUSINESS ANNOUNCED (Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The movie business operates as a never-ending train of projects that all go through sort of the same standard pattern (development, production, promotion, release), but the COVID-19 pandemic has caused that train change course or, in some cases, stall completely. One odd consequence of this is that, as several major 2020 films are delayed until 2021, the release schedule is getting a little crowded, as Hollywood still has all of the the films that were originally scheduled for 2021 to release. One such film is the sequel to 2017 s animated comedy The Boss Baby (Rotten at 53%) called The Boss Baby: Family Business. Apparently set decades after the first film, Alec Baldwin s baby character is now an adult, or at least his brother, voiced by James Marsden, is; it s unclear in the synopsis if the Boss Baby is still a baby. Anyway, the new voice cast includes Jeff Goldblum, Eva Longoria, and Amy Sedaris, who plays the sequel s new genius baby. Universal Pictures is sticking with its original plans to release The Boss Baby: Family Business on March 26, 2021, despite all the new competition in 2021 from delayed 2020 films.

sidered the open fifth slot in the Best Actor race (noms for Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Antonio Banderas were considered locks). Uncut Gems, in which Sandler plays a Diamond District gem dealer with a gambling problem and a complicated love life, is one of the actor’s best-reviewed movies, according to the Tomatometer.SURPRISE: Two Popes, Two Noms Jonathan Pryce Takes Coveted Fifth Slot in Best Actor Race, Anthony Hopkins Up for Supporting(Photo by Peter Mountain/©Netflix)As we said above, four of the Best Actor slots were seen as sure things going into Monday – Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Antonio Banderas, Leonardo DiCaprio – with the fifth slot considered open. Would it be Golden Globe-winner Taron Egerton for his portrayal of Elton John? Or Robert De Niro for his take on Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran? Turns out the fabulous pop star and the bloody house-painter would have to step aside for none other than his Holiness, Pope Francis, as played by Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce in Netflix’s Two Popes. The film generally made more of an impression than some were expecting, picking up noms not just for Pryce but also for co-star Anthony Hopkins, and for Best Adapted Screenplay.SNUB: Awkwafina and Lupita Nyong o Get No Love(Photo by ©A24, Claudette Barius/©Universal)Considering Awkwafina racked up a ton of nominations from critics groups, and Lupita Nyong o has been winning the Best Actress award from a lot of those same groups, it certainly came as a shock when neither of them managed to land a nod from the Oscars. The former earned rave reviews and a Golden Globes win for her nuanced work as a frustrated granddaughter coming to terms with her grandmother s terminal illness in Lulu Wang s deeply personal dramedy The Farewell, while the latter s dual turn, both as a mother trying to protect her family and as her evil doppelgänger, in Jordan Peele s Us blew everyone away and earned her a SAG Award nomination. Unfortunately, neither was good enough to merit a spot in the Academy s top five.SURPRISE: Cynthia Erivo Just an Oscar Win Away from EGOT STatus(Photo by Focus Features)Cynthia Erivo was always a chance for a nomination for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in Focus Features’ rousing Harriet, but pundits favored Golden Globe winner Awkwafina for what was seen as the category’s open fifth slot. With The Farewell completely snubbed this morning, including its lead Awkwafina, the slot was open, and it went, as some expected, to Broadway star Erivo, who’s earned praise for a string of film roles over the last two years (Widows, Bad Times At The El Royale). Lupita Nyong’o and Alfre Woodard had been her fiercest competition for the coveted opening. The nomination puts Erivo one step closer to EGOT status, having earned a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy for her role as Celie in Broadway musical The Color Purple – she got her Daytime Emmy for a performance from the production on The Today Show. The smart money would say it’s not her year for a win, but as we’ve seen this morning, the Academy never ceases to surprise.SNUB: Apollo 11 Grounded by the Academy(Photo by ©Neon)The Best Documentary category may not be the most glamorous, but there was one film most believed would at least make the list, if not win it entirely. Apollo 11, the stunning chronicle of the eponymous space mission brought to life solely through archival footage, wowed critics to the tune of a near-unanimous Certified Fresh 99% on the Tomatometer, and it s been plowing through awards season picking up trophies from all of the major critics organizations. Alas, none of it was enough to earn recognition from the Academy, who, among their selections for Best Documentary, curiously saw fit instead to include Netflix s The Edge of Democracy, which isn t a bad film by any means, but it hasn t been nominated for pretty much anything else.SURPRISE: Honeyland Makes History (Photo by Ljubomir Stevanov/©Neon)North Macedonian film Honeyland quietly made history this morning, becoming the first movie nominated for both Best Documentary (Feature) and Best International Feature Film (the category formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film). It made history, too, as only the second North Macedonian movie to ever receive a nomination for the international category (the first was for the 1994 film Before the Rain). The film, shot over three years in a fly-on-the-wall style, focuses on a woman who uses ancient beekeeping techniques and traditions to produce honey in the Macedonian mountains, and the tensions that arise when a new nomadic family arrives and interferes with her livelihood. It remains one of the best-reviewed movies of 2019, Certified Fresh at 99% on the Tomatometer. [Editor s note: An earlier version of this story stated that Honeyland was the first nominated North Macedonian film; it is actually the second.]SNUB: Monday Morning’s Alright (For Fighting) for Largely Ignored Rocketman(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)No need to clean your rose-tinted shades: Your eyes don’t deceive you – Elton John biopic was snubbed in a number of surprising categories. Perhaps the biggest shock was that Taron Egerton, who plays John in the film and took home a Golden Globe for his efforts (and sang all of his own vocals), missed out on a nomination for Best Actor. Other shockers for Rocketman: No love for Best Costume Design or Makeup and Hairstyling. The movie earned its sole nomination in the category of Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin.SURPRISE: That Toy Story 4 Song You Forgot About Is Up for an Oscar(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)Did you even remember that Randy Newman had a song in Toy Story 4? Because we’ll be honest, we’d kinda forgotten (and so had most pundits, with the song barely registering a blip on the prognostication radar ahead of this morning’s nominations). But he does, and it’s called “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” and it’s just been nominated for Best Original Song, pushing Beyoncé’s “Spirit” from The Lion King out of contention. The Newman song might be the most literal of the nominated tunes this year, playing over a montage of incidences in which Forky tries to throw himself away, and, well, Woody just can’t let him. This is Newman’s 21st Oscar nomination, and fourth Best Original Song nomination for a Toy Story movie.SNUB: Lulu Wang s The Farewell Shut Out Entirely(Photo by A24)We ve already covered how Awkwafina and Shuzhen Zhao were snubbed in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories above, but considering how much of a phenomenon The Farewell was, it s incredible that it failed to garner any nominations at all. If the acting categories were too crowded, we thought perhaps writer-director Lulu Wang stood a chance of competing for Best Original Screenplay, but even there, she was supplanted by Sam Mendes  1917, whose Writers Guild Award nomination was the first recognition of the film s writing all season. Ever since The Farewell premiered, we ve been expecting to see it make some sort of appearance at the Oscars, but it looks like that s not going to happen after all.SURPRISE: Scarlett Johansson Earns Double Nominations, Joining Prestigious Company(Photo by ©Netflix, Larry Horricks/©Fox Searchlight Pictures)Maybe she can play a tree… Scarlett Johansson earned the distinction of being twice-nominated in a single year for her work in Marriage Story (Best Actress In a Leading Role) and in Jojo Rabbit (Best Actress In a Supporting Role). Johansson becomes just the 12th actor ever to be nominated for two awards in the same year, and, interestingly, one of her fellow nominees this year is among those names: Al Pacino was nominated for both Scent Of A Woman and Glengarry Glen Ross at the 65th Academy Awards. The last actor to earn double nominations in a single year was Cate Blanchett, nominated for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I’m Not There at the 80th Awards. Double nominations seem to neither be a disadvantage nor advantage, with seven of the 11 past double nominees managing to win one of their awards, though no one has ever won both.SNUB: Dolemite Ignored Across the Board, Including for Best Costumes (What!?)(Photo by Francois Duhamel/Netflix)Adam Sandler wasn’t the only dark-horse SNL alum to miss out on a Best Actor slot this morning: Eddie Murphy, whose Dolemite Is My Name is one of the best-reviewed comedies of the year and whom many thought could ride the cresting Eddie-aissance to an Oscar nom, got no love today, and neither did the film generally, earning a total of zero nominations. The biggest snub for the Netflix comedy arguably came in the Costume Design category, where Ruth E. Carter, who took home the Oscar in the category last year for Black Panther, was considered a shoo-in and a favorite to win. Joker, on the other hand, was the surprise nominee for Best Costume Design, edging out Dolemite and Elton John biopic Rocketman.SURPRISE: Klaus Edges Out Frozen II in A Battle of Winter Animation(Photo by ©Netflix)We re not saying Klaus isn t a terrific film, because it is it s Certified Fresh at 93% with an Audience Score of 98% but that doesn t mean it s any less surprising that it managed to nab a nomination for Best Animated Feature over Frozen II. This is the first time since 2011 s Winnie the Pooh that a Walt Disney Animation film hasn t been nominated for the Oscar, and it s worth noting that the first Frozen even went on to win back in 2013. It used to be conventional wisdom that Disney s animated films and Pixar s various offerings would almost be guaranteed to earn Oscar nods, but this is just more evidence that times are changing, and there are more and more studios taking risks and producing incredible work in animation. The 92nd Academy Awards will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8 at 5pm PT /8pm ET and broadcast live on ABC.Are you as obsessed with awards as we are? 7.89.2 3月喜迎The characters on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina might worship in the Church of Night, which means their winter tradition centers around the Solstice. But in the show s holiday special, A Midwinter s Tale, a few members of the Spellman family are much more excited about a different Yuletide tradition.“Sabrina and Ambrose and Hilda [are] all warm and fuzzy about mortal Christmas,” star Lucy Davis, who plays the titular teenage witch s Aunt Hilda, told Rotten Tomatoes when we visited the set of the Netflix series last month. “[It’s] the three of us versus Zelda. The special holiday episode sees Greendale ready for Christmas and the Church of Night observing its not-so-merry Solstice. It will also feature a flashback to Solstice Past, in which viewers will see a younger Sabrina (McKenna Grace) ask Santa for something special. Although, as star Kiernan Shipka put it, “Obviously, the show wouldn t be our show without some excitement and some demons — literally.“It s action-packed and it s fun, Shipka added, but at the same time, there s a lot of heart and there s a lot of soul to it. A lot of the relationships develop in it really beautifully. I think it really fuses the witch world and the mortal world in a really lovely way.”(Photo by Diyah Pera/Netflix)The episode will also hit pause on the series ongoing storylines. The series first half ended with Sabrina (Shipka) embracing her witch side, turning her hair platinum blonde as she devoted herself to the Dark Lord and gave up her relationship with mortal boyfriend Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch). Despite Sabrina s pleased expression in the final moment of episode 10, Shipka believes her character still has a duality to confront in the second half of the first season, which premieres April 5.“I think there s a strong part of her that s mortal. But I do think there s that dark side in her,” she said. As an example, she characterized Sabrina’s choice to sign the Book of the Beast in episode 10 as a “strategic” choice, adding that “it definitely wasn t surrendering by any means. If anything, I think it was taking a step forward in her agenda.”Of course, that agenda will wait for April as “A Midwinter’s Tale” is a standalone story that focuses in on the characters and it takes its time, the actress added.(Photo by Diyah Pera/Netflix)Lachlan Watson, who plays Sabrina s human bestie Susie Putnam, told Rotten Tomatoes the special has more of that nostalgic kind of feel to it. Watson is a fan of Doctor Who and its Christmas-episode tradition (replaced this year with a New Year s Day special) and said Sabrina s Christmas special “just brings me back to sitting around the fire and watching the [those] holiday specials with my family.” While the actor didn t want to give too much of the role away, Watson is  very happy about the fact that Susie spends much of the episode in an elf costume.Chance Perdomo, who plays Sabrina s cousin Ambrose, characterized his role in the special as a “conscientious objector.” Throughout the first part of the series, his character found himself caught up in the upheaval at the Church of Night, culminating in a slight reprieve from his century-long house arrest at the Spellman abode. But come the Solstice, Ambrose will be “objecting to the shenanigans” of a typical Sabrina episode. “[Ambrose is] just trying to have a nice relaxed holiday season,” he said. And when things inevitably go sideways, Ambrose’s response will be, “if you need me, you know where I ll be,” Perdomo said.Jaz Sinclair’s Rosalind Walker will make her first visit to the Spellman home.“That was really fun for me because I got to play with Hilda and Zelda for the first time,” she said — but the festivities may be cut short as Ros’ psychic powers kick in with an important message.Ros won’t be the only newcomer to the house as Zelda (Miranda Otto) faces the reality of her choice at the end of Part 1 by caring for Leticia, the newborn Blackwood she spirited away in the finale.“Zelda finds herself very attached to Baby Leticia,” Otto said, added that the Solstice is something of a “perilous time” for witches. “They have to keep the Yule Log burning to protect themselves from spirits that could come into the house.”This particular year, the Yule Log is more important than ever with a baby in the house — and Zelda s fear of someone snatching the child out from under her may prove to be correct.(Photo by Dean Buscher/Netflix)What about Sabrina? According to Adeline Rudolph, who plays Weird Sister Agatha, the trio and Sabrina will use the occasion to hold a seance. For the Weird Sisters, orphans left at the Academy of Unseen Arts over the holiday break, it turns out be an exciting change of pace.“We get really excited about it,” Rudolph said. “It s our version of trying to have a family experience.”Of course, any time the Weird Sisters and Sabrina combine forces, scary things happen. But what would a Christmas special be without a few frights? It seems Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is dedicated to proving the holidays have room for a few good scares.Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter s Tale premieres Friday, December 14. The second half of season 1 will debut Friday, April 5, 2019 on Netflix.

Fans Choice: Favorite Movies 2018The fans have spoken! This year, for the first time in the history of our annual Golden Tomato Awards, we included categories for Favorite Movie of 2018 and Favorite TV Show of 2018, allowing Rotten Tomatoes users to vote for a winner from a pool of Certified Fresh films and TV series. For the Fans Choice of Favorite Movie of 2018, the top 10 included some expected contenders like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Mission: Impossible Fallout, and Crazy Rich Asians, as well as a few less obvious choices like Roma and BlacKkKlansman. In the end, though, it was a certain superpowered battle royale that racked up the most clicks out of the total 26.9K votes cast, earning the title of Favorite Movie of 2018.The order below reflects the number of total votes cast for each film by users in a poll that ran on RT from January 11 to January 24.« Previous Category Next Category »

BOB全站app手机客户端 This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering stories for titles like Aladdin 2, The Batman, Hamilton, and Porgy and Bess. This WEEK S TOP STORYDISNEY S LIVE-ACTION ALADDIN GETS A SEQUEL(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Disney s CGI remake of The Lion King was one of last year s biggest box office hits (.65 billion and #2 behind Avengers: Endgame), but Disney s Aladdin also did extremely well, topping billion worldwide. We have not heard about plans for a Lion King sequel (and there certainly were sequels and prequels to the original film), but that s exactly what happened for Aladdin this week. Despite its box office success, Aladdin has a Rotten Tomatometer score at 57%, which might help to explain why Disney has hired a new pair of screenwriters for the sequel, and there s no word yet about director Guy Ritchie returning. The new writers are John Gatins (Power Rangers, Real Steel) and Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center; co-writer of Straight Outta Compton), but their credits only give us tiny hints at what their Aladdin sequel could be like (i.e. about as much as you could tell about Aladdin by looking at the credits of director Guy Ritchie). Not much has been revealed about the Aladdin sequel, except that it won t be a Disney Plus title, and it won t be an adaptation of any of the 1990s direct-to-video sequels.Other Top Headlines1. NEW VIDEO SHOWS OFF THE COSTUME AND MUSIC OF NEXT YEAR S THE BATMAN (Photo by Matt Reeves)We are over 16 months away from the release in the summer of 2021 of The Batman (6/25/2021), the reboot of DC Comics most popular superhero to introduce Robert Pattinson (Twilight, The Lighthouse) as our new Bruce Wayne. Even though the movie is that far away, director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, War for the Planet of the Apes) this week released a video described as camera test footage  that shows off both the new Batman costume and also some of the new musical theme from composer Michael Giacchino (LOST, Star Trek, Avengers: Endgame). Curiously, Reeves chose to show us the new Batman costume bathed in a dark red lighting, which also inspired comparisons to the costume from Netflix s Daredevil (even if it won t actually be red). It s very possible that the reason the costume preview came out this week is that Reeves will soon be starting the exterior filming of The Batman, at which point we probably will be getting set photos of Pattinson as The Batman anyway (in addition to Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin).2. MARGOT ROBBIE AND MICHAEL B. JORDAN JOIN CHRISTIAN BALE IN NEW DAVID O. RUSSELL FILM(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, JA/Everett Collection)There have been so many superhero movies in recent years that we re increasingly at a point where there are nearly more major stars who have been in them than those who haven t. So, for example, the new movie from David O. Russell (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) has three big stars, and they re The Dark Knight, Killmonger from Black Panther, and Harley Quinn. Christian Bale was the first to sign on for Russell s untitled new film (formerly titled Amsterdam), and this week gave us two of his co-stars, both within a few hours of each other. First up was Margot Robbie, the star of last week s Birds of Prey, who landed the female lead that had formerly had been speculated as a possible role for frequent Russell collaborator Jennifer Lawrence. The Robbie announcement was quickly followed on Wednesday by Michael B. Jordan, who is taking a role for which Jamie Foxx had previously been rumored as a frontrunner. David O. Russell is keeping the premise secret, but it s described as being about an unlikely partnership between a doctor and a lawyer.3. LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA SAYS DISNEY WILL PROBABLY MUTE HAMILTON SWEARS (Photo by Nicholas Hunt/Getty Images)It may not have been immediately obvious, but there was one awkward element in the news last week that Walt Disney Pictures would be releasing a filmed version of the Broadway hit Hamilton in theaters next year (10/15/2021). That awkward detail is the language of some of the dialogue, which includes what we will delicately call F bombs. The sticky issue here is that Disney has a self-described policy of PG-13-and-under ratings, which the repeated use of the F word would seem buck against (the MPAA does sometimes allow that word to be used once in a film and retain its PG-13 rating). So, Lin-Manuel Miranda was asked by a New York Times reporter this week about how Disney is going to reconcile the language issue, and he confirmed that, if we have to mute a word here or there to reach the largest audience possible, I m OK with that, because your kids already have the original language memorized. One possibility is that perhaps Disney will use some sort of sound effect (like a drum beat or a cymbal clang) that will blur the language without specifically using a bleep sound or an over obvious muting sound effect.4. OLYMPIC TRUE STORIES FROM OLIVIA WILDE AND ZOE SALDANA IN THE WORKS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Sometimes two completely different movie stories will come out in the same week that have remarkably similar themes. This week, it was biopics about female Olympic athletes.  One of them will be called Perfect, which will be an adaptation of the book Landing on My Feet: A Diary of Dreams, co-written by 1990s Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, about her struggle at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (also the setting of last year s Richard Jewell). The adaptation of Strug s book will be directed by actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde, who made her debut last year with Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 97%). It s not yet known if the Kerri Strug biopic will be Olivia Wilde s next film as director. The other Olympic movie in the news this week is Fencer, in which Zoe Saldana will star as Olympic fencer Jasmine McGlade for producer Casey Affleck.5. AMERICAN OPERA PORGY AND BESS TO BECOME MOVIE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1959 Although some stories seem to get new movie adaptations ever three or four years (Peter Pan, Dracula, Robin Hood, etc.), there are others that have either never been adapted, or haven t been in several decades. One such example of that is George Gershwin s opera of love in the American South, Porgy and Bess, which previously was adapted by Otto Preminger as a movie in 1959. Mudbound director Dee Rees is now partnering with MGM for a new adaptation, which Rees will both write and direct. It s not yet known who might play either Porgy or Bess, or whether Dee Rees adaptation might shift the setting from 1920s Charleston to a more contemporary setting (or if the music will be updated). Mudbound received a Certified Fresh Tomatometer at 97% and four Academy Award nominations (Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Original Song, and Cinematography).6. HARRIET STAR CYNTHIA ERIVO TO STAR IN SCI-FI PODCAST ADAPTATION CARRIER (Photo by Eli Winston/Everett Collection)As new ways of telling stories emerge, they also eventually lead to movies being adapted from them. For example, in the last few years, we ve had both The Emoji Movie and Slenderman, based on online phenomenons. Another new form that has its origins in the Internet is the podcast, which takes many forms, but there are some that actually tell narrative stories. Cynthia Erivo, who starred in last year s Harriet, played one of the characters in the sci-fi podcast Carrier, and she is now attached to reprise her role as a truck driver in a movie adaptation. Carrier will be produced by Steven Spielberg s Amblin Partners, which recently co-produced both 1917 and Dark Waters.7. AWKWAFINA TO DEPICT A REAL LIFE PROFESSIONAL GAMBLER IN THE BACCARAT MACHINE(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)In the United States, there are many popular casino games (blackjack, roulette, craps), but one that is less popular is baccarat, which most Americans probably know only as the game James Bond likes to play. Baccarat s pop culture reputation may soon get a bump thanks to Awkwafina, who is now attached to star as real-life professional gambler Cheung Yin Kelly Sun in a biopic called The Baccarat Machine. Despite that title, one game that might actually be depicted as much (or more) is poker, because the story will reportedly depict Sun s unlikely partership with legendary poker player Phil Ivey. 8. RICK MORANIS TO COME OUT OF RETIREMENT FOR JOSH GAD S SEQUEL SHRUNK (Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)If you re a fan of Ghostbusters, you might already know that Rick Moranis has famously been something of a recluse for many years now, and has frequently turned down opportunities to return to franchises like Ghostbusters. So, when the news broke out last year that Josh Gad was attached to star in Shrunk, a sequel and/or reboot of the popular Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise, one might have been tempted to theorize about who might be cast in the role originally played by Moranis. One need not fan-cast such a replacement, it turns out, because Disney worked their magic and got Moranis to return in a supporting role to Josh Gad s character as his scientist son. There had been some online speculation that Shrunk might be a Disney Plus project, but it was also confirmed this week to be a planned theatrical release.9. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE TO GET REMADE YET AGAINThere seems to be something about classic slasher franchises from the 1970s and 1980s that lends them to being rebooted or remade multiple times. For some higher profile examples, the Halloween franchise was soft-rebooted in 2018 after having already been rebooted by Rob Zombie in 2007, and a similar reboot is in the works for Friday the 13th. Another slasher franchise that already has a particular confusing filmography to decipher is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which has what are described as both a remake series (2003 and 2006) and an alternate series (the more recent films from 2013 and 2017). Legendary Pictures, the company behind monster reboots like Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, is now developing a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to be directed by Ryan and Andy Tohill, who made their feature film debuts in 2018 with the indie film The Dig (Fresh at 73%). This latest reboot will be produced by Fede Alvarez (the director of Don t Breathe), who described their version as, violent, exciting, and so depraved it will stay with you forever. Tobe Hooper s original 1974 film is Certified Fresh at 88%, but the other later films are all Rotten.

This week s Ketchup brings you another nice headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Suicide Squad, The Eternals, and Halloween Kills. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI JUMPING THE GUNN ONTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD IN UNKNOWN ROLE(Photo by Jasin Boland/© Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Last year, Walt Disney Pictures briefly fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (if you re wondering why Marvel s not moving forward on that movie faster, that s the reason) over old jokes in poor taste were found on his Twitter feed. James Gunn has since been hired back, but in the meantime, he jumped ship to work for Warner Bros and DC Comics for The Suicide Squad, which will be a soft reboot sequel to the 2016 super villain movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. This week, James Gunn cast one of his frequent collaborators as well as one of Marvel s stars. First up was Nathan Fillion, who previously worked with James Gunn on both Slither and Super, and who also had a cameo voice acting role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. The biggest surprise, however, came with the news that Taika Waititi will also have a role in The Suicide Squad. In addition to directing Thor: Ragnarok (in which he also voiced the alien Korg), Taika Waititi is also returning to write and direct Thor: Love and Thunder (11/3/2021), which will come out less than three months after The Suicide Squad. James Gunn also this week cast comedian Steve Agee to provide the voice of the monstrous super villain King Shark. Warner Bros has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be five days after the fifth anniversary of the release of Suicide Squad on August 1, 2016.Other Top Headlines1. KIT HARRINGTON TAKING THE BLACK (KNIGHT) AGAIN IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS(Photo by George Kraychyk/©TriStar Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)One of the big reveals at Disney s D23 this past weekend was the casting of Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, AKA Marvel s Black Knight, in next year s The Eternals (11/6/2020). Harrington will be joined by Richard Madden, he of Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, as Ikaris. This came along with confirmation that Gemma Chan will costar in The Eternals just one year after she also costarred in Captain Marvel as the Kree warrior Minn-Erva. The inclusion of Black Knight and Minn-Erva in The Eternals is significant because both characters were long-time members of The Avengers from the 1980s to the 1990s. Black Knight actually first joined as the 14th Avenger in 1969, in-between Vision in 1968 and Black Widow in 1973. So if one wants to speculate about a future Avengers movie, they re both possibilities.2. BLACK PANTHER II SNAGS MARVEL S BIGGEST RELEASE DATE FOR THE SUMMER OF 2022(Photo by Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios didn t invent the notion of the weekend closest to May 1st being the best spot to start the summer season (that was arguably the 1999 reboot of The Mummy), but they ve certainly perfected the move. In recent years, that has included Avengers: Age of Ultron (5/1/2015), Captain America: Civil War (5/6/2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (5/5/2017), Avengers: Infinity War (4/27/2018), and Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and will include Black Widow (5/1/2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2020). One of the highly anticipated films that was left out of Marvel s big panel of announcements at SDCC this year was Black Panther II, but we learned last weekend that they were just saving that news for D23, where Marvel revealed that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022. No other premise or cast details were confirmed, but presumably, Chadwick Boseman, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright will all be back.3. BOYHOOD DIRECTOR TO SPEND 20 YEARS FILMING MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG(Photo by Wilson Webb/©Lionsgate/courtesy Everett Collection)As of this writing in 2019, Broadway singer/actor Ben Platt is 25, and actress Beanie Feldstein is 26. But when their new movie comes out, they ll be more like 45 and 46. That s because Platt and Feldstein have both signed to star in a new musical from director Richard Linklater, who famously spent 12 years making the 2014 Academy Award-winning drama Boyhood. That musical will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim s 1981 play Merrily We Roll Along, which was itself based on the 1934 play of the same name. Sondheim s play was set across a period from 1957 to 1976, and as with Boyhood, Richard Linklater plans on filming Merrily We Go Along over a 20 year period just like how its plot unfolds. Presuming Merrily We Roll Along is released around 2039 or 2040, Richard Linklater (born 7/30/1960) will be between 78 and 80.4. JAMIE FOXX AND TINA FEY TO STAR IN NEXT YEAR S SECOND PIXAR FILM, SOUL (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As much of an info dump as San Diego Comic-Con is, Disney s own D23 convention almost matches that. This year, a lot of that went to the upcoming Disney+ streaming app s content, but Disney itself made a few big feature film announcements. We ve known for a while now that Pixar s next film will be Onward (3/6/2020), a modern fantasy starring MCU stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. But that s not all for Pixar in 2020: They also have Soul on their schedule for release on June 16, 2020. Pixar revealed at D23 that the stars of Soul will be Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. Fey will voice a disembodied human soul in the afterlife, with Jamie Foxx voicing a music teacher who appears to kick it just before a big career opportunity (cue the comparisons to Mr. Holland s Opus and also Pixar s Coco). Foxx and Fey will also be joined by the voices of Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), Questlove (of The Roots and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and Phylicia Rashad (TV s The Cosby Show), with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) collaborating on the film s score.5. PAUL RUDD GROWS UP TO BE ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL IN NEXT YEAR S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Vertical Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection)Quite the phenomenon when a future megastar gets their career start in a horrible horror movie. Take, for example, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth film in the horror franchise, which featured Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, one of the kids Laurie Strode was babysitting in the first movie. Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in last year s hit soft reboot sequel Halloween (which earned over 5 million worldwide), and she s returning for Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and (possibly) Halloween Ends (10/15/2021), which will soon be filmed back-to-back. Paul Rudd was indeed approached about returning as Tommy Doyle, but due to scheduling conflicts with Ghostbusters 2020 (7/10/2020), Tommy Doyle will instead be played by Anthony Michael Hall. Rudd and Hall may not resemble each other, but if the Halloween slasher franchise now serves as a nostalgia feast, the casting of the costar of 1980s movies like Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club fits that theme perfectly.6. DISNEY ANIMATION S POST-FROZEN II TO BE RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON (Photo by Disney)Disney has had a mystery project scheduled for November 25, 2020 for a while, but it wasn t until last weekend s D23 that Disney revealed that it will be Raya and the Last Dragon. The animated fantasy adventure will be set in a fictional kingdom called Kumandra, which will be inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia. Raya and the Last Dragon will mark the directorial debuts of Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, who previously worked on Disney movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. The screenplay is being written by Adele Lim, whose Crazy Rich Asians featured Awkwafina, now also a voice role in Raya. The title character to be voiced by Cassie Steele of TV s Degrassi: The Next Generation.7. EVA LONGORIA TO DIRECT THE FLAMIN HOT CHEETOS MOVIE(Photo by Bauer Martinez Films/courtesy Everett Collection)Fox Searchlight has been moving forward with plans for a movie called Flamin Hot about how the popular brand of Cheetos snack foods came to be. They re hiring Eva Longoria to direct the true story of Richard Montanez, who was a janitor at Frito-Lay when he came up with the Flamin Hot Cheetos concept after noticing that regular Cheetos were not as flavorful as Mexican snacks on the same convenience store shelves.8. HAPPY DEATH DAY DIRECTOR TO BODY SWAP VINCE VAUGHN AND 22-YEAR-OLD KATHRYN NEWTON(Photo by Giles Keyte / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)Director Chris Landon is newly available as it appears unlikely that Happy Death Day will receive another sequel after this year s box office disappointment of 2U, which earned just million domestically. For his next film, Landon will cowrite and direct a body swapping thriller. BOB全站app手机客户端 Of all the directors on this list, the one that will likely benefit most from this strange season is Eliza Hittman. Her drama, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a BBC production distributed by Focus Features shortly after the pandemic hit, is a quiet indie about two girls who travel from Pennsylvania to New York to seek an abortion. It cements Hittman as more than just an indie darling and pushes her forward as one of the best up-and-coming female directors in Hollywood. The film is a difficult watch, which also makes it difficult to promote with glitzy cocktail parties, given its serious subject matter not that anyone is throwing any glitzy cocktail parties anytime soon. But it’s undeniably moving, and it has serious social and political resonance – both of which rank high with Academy voters. Following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a renewed focus on the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, Never Rarely Sometimes Always can build a compelling narrative on why it is the movie of the moment and worthy of recognition. In a typical year, a low-budget indie with no stars that premiered in the first half of the year would have difficulty staying in the conversation. However, as voters will have time and opportunity to watch titles from the comfort of their homes, it’s reasonable to think they will be able to see smaller hidden gems like this.Chloé Zhao
