With impressive, nuanced performances all round, this is a film that grips throughout despite its slow pace. You may decide early on that you know where it s going, but the ending still makes an impact, writes Jennie Kermode in Eye for Film. We recently chatted with Marcantonio about the film, the horrors of parenting, and what is on his Indie Fresh List.Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Is it better to do horror right now? It seems like horror as a genre might be a bit pandemic proof.Joe Marcantonio: Kindred is a film that skirts many genres there are funny bits, scary bits, thrilling bits, elements of suspense but it isn’t a horror film in a traditional sense. There are no jump scares, maniacs, or monsters. I was inspired by the films of Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, and the way that South Korean cinema manages to mix genres in really interesting and unique ways. Just look at how hard it is to categorize a film like Parasite.Having said that, it’s clear that times of uncertainly or national trauma always seem to serve as a catalyst for interesting horror films. The Great Depression spawned Frankenstein and The Mummy in the 30s, about the fear of the unknown. McCarthyism spawned Invasion of the Body Snatchers,  about the potential infiltration of an insidious force. The Vietnam War spawned Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, and The Exorcist, all about the breakdown of traditional family values. The War on Terror spawned the term torture porn, when there was so much talk about torture and whether it is ever justifiable. And recently the Fake News era seems to have produced recent films like His House and Saint Maud that have escapist fantasy elements yet deal with truth and lies. I guess Kindred potentially falls into the same camp. Watching scary films that reflect the society in some way enables people to experience their fears in a safe space, to feel scared or terrified yet retain some control. It acts as a catharsis at times of uncertainty.Many have made the obvious Rosemary s Baby comparisons, but what is it about motherhood and horror? Why can it twist into something terrifying so easily?I remember how helpless I felt when I was first left at home in charge of my son, and how freaked out I was to be responsible for keeping such a vulnerable creature alive. We’d had a home birth, and when the midwife left and my wife was resting, I stood in the kitchen, holding him, not knowing what to do. The level of vulnerability and uncertainty was overwhelming, and if you add the anxiety and terror involved, it is very fertile ground for horror.To be totally honest, the truth is that a lot of the characters in the film are reflecting my own experiences as a parent. There is a monologue that Margaret gives about her regrets as a parent, and there is an uncomfortable amount of truth in there about my feelings and mental health concerns in the wake of my daughter s birth. It’s slightly traumatic for me to watch as, it feels very exposing and raw, but it s probably my favorite scene in the film.Talk about casting Tamara. So much of the film falls on her reaction, and was it always intended to have a Black female lead?The script Jason and I wrote was always non-specific about race, simply because we were open to all possibilities. In the end, we cast Tamara because she was the best actress we saw, not because she was the best Black actress we saw. Maybe I was being naive to what some people s reactions to that choice would be, but I’m very glad we picked her. She’s really terrific, a superb actor and a wonderful person. Race is such a prevalent talking point in the USA at the moment (and it s an issue in the UK too), so I totally understand people reading a lot into that decision, but the film was always intended as one about the British class system and inherited wealth, rather than one about race. Margaret would hate anyone who tried to take her son away, whatever they looked like or race they were. Because of the decision to cast Tamara in the role, we’ve had a lot of comparisons to Get Out, and seem to have caught the ire of some reviewers who think that we were jumping on some kind of bandwagon, or attempting to copy that film in some way, but that was never the case. We do feature an old-fashioned teacup in Kindred, as they do in Get Out, but that’s only because the film is set in the UK and we drink a lot of tea! Margaret wouldn’t be caught dead drinking from a mug; it s far too common.The house is a big part of the drama of the film. How did you find the perfect location?For a variety of reasons, we decided to shoot the film in Ireland, and their political history means that there were a lot of manor houses built by the English landowners that were initially installed by Oliver Cromwell and his cronies. But after Irish independence, a lot of the large houses were burned down or fell into disrepair. In England, a grand house like that would have a car park and a cafe, and they’d charge you a small fortune to walk around and look at the paintings. But their outlook on these things is different in Ireland, so we had a few good locations as options.The house was always intended to be a character in the film, and I had a clear image in my mind about the kind of place we had to find. We found a few okay options, but kept hearing whispers about a place called Stradbally. A few people even suggested we shouldn t go and look at it because of the associated cost problems; it is so far from Dublin you need to put crew up in hotels. But we drove out to visit, and as soon as we saw Stradbally Hall, I apologized to my producer because I knew this was the place and his job was going to get a lot harder. An upside to its remoteness is that not a lot of other people have shot there I think the only shoot was a couple of scenes in the Lassie movie back in 2005. The guy who owns the house is called Thomas coincidently, that is the same name as Jack s character in the film. It felt like a sign.The place looks haunted on its face. Did you feel that in real life?It’s definitely a slightly spooky place. Most of the strange paintings and taxidermy in the film were actually situated around the house; boxing hedgehogs, foxes, ferrets it was all quite odd. The owners are a friendly family with young kids, and they live in a small, modernized part of the house, but one member of the family still lives in that larger part of the house, and every now and then he’d unexpectedly walk past in his dressing gown and give you a bit of a fright.What is on your Indie Fresh List what independent films are you watching, or what are you watching in general?I really enjoyed His House and Saint Maud  they are both genre films, and they feel very considered and cinematic in their approach. They avoid the kitchen sink drama feel that a lot of independent British films fall into. Parasite and Uncut Gems are my favorite films of the last year or so, and I just rewatched both series of Succession, which is so well written it makes me queasy.Kindred is available now in select theaters and on VOD.

It comes off the back of your organization, Free the Bid, which you developed to help people get work in commercials. Why did you set up these organizations — what need were you looking to fill?Har el: I guess I was very much like a struggling immigrant and an independent filmmaker, trying to make my mark and develop my voice and find a way to sustain myself. And I ve realized that a lot of the filmmakers that I grew up admiring — you could call them like independent American auteurs, like Spike Jonze — a lot of the ways some of these filmmakers supported themselves was through directing commercials. I always was wondering about it as somebody that has no safety net to fall on and no way to support myself financially and never went to film school. And I was like, how could these people exist? And how do they make it work between films? And realizing that it s such a big part of how male filmmakers often support themselves – is by directing other things. I wanted to make sure that the doors were open to women.When I got in myself and managed to direct some commercials and win awards for that, I realized that on every triple bid that I was on, I was always the only woman that s even allowed to bid. [Editor s note: a triple bid is where an advertiser, agency, or client requests bids for a project/assignment from three creatives.] So Free the Bid started before Free the Work by creating that kind of system of commitment from advertising agencies and brands to allow a woman to bid. And it definitely made a huge change in the advertising world in terms of the amount of women that are directing.I think what we re seeing now is, as with everything, that women of color and Black women haven t gotten the same opportunity as white women. But that s something we ve been really putting a lot of focus on since we launched Free the Work, which has expanded to take care and to represent and find opportunities for underrepresented creators that are not just women, but people of color and people from the LGBTQIA community, people with a disability. Ageism I would say is a huge thing, too, both for women and for men, but especially for women.So all of those things come together to really make sure that more women get an opportunity to be considered, to be hired, and also to sustain their careers when they re not making a movie, when they re not on a production. I think just seeing the amount of work that does get made, and then often doesn t get recognized, is another story that I ve also focused on in the past few years.Eliza Scanlen and Toby Wallace in Shannon Murphy s Babyteeth. Because for instance, a film like Babyteeth, which is, to me it s like my favorite film of the year I would say. Eliza Scanlen gives an incredible performance; Toby Wallace is I think one of the best new actors that I ve seen. Michelle Lotters and Ben Mendelsohn, it s like four perfect performances. And it s directed by a woman, Shannon Murphy, it s her first film. It s written by Rita Kalnejais, it s her first script, a theater playwright. You have this film that has a first-time script writer and first-time director that had four incredible performances and definitely got some amazing reviews. And that s, to me, really exciting to see that that happens.You have three films on your list of Women s History Month recommendations that are fairly well known, but they re so different, being Raw, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, and Beach Rats. It s so incredible to me, especially Beach Rats, because that to me is my favorite Eliza Hittman movie; I just felt like what she did and what Harris Dickinson did in that movie was just so It didn t feel like cinema. It just felt like you were taking a slice of this person s life. And then Céline Sciamma with that sweeping epic romance in Portrait, and then on the other side, Julia Ducournau with this completely inventive horror-movie and coming-of-age tale, Raw.Har el: And exceptional visually her film, too, Raw. It has sequences in it that are just extremely cinematic and moody and transcend anything you can think about in the context of horror, in terms of your relationship to your body and blood and all of those things. It s really such an impressive film. And I believe that Beach Rats just pierced the screen in terms of the way it became one with reality. And it was amazing. Portrait of a Lady, the ending itself, that last scene with that long shot of her watching, it s unforgettable. It s so easy to have charisma when there s, I don t know, a lot of tension and fireworks and budgets and all of those things. But sometimes you see a film that just has this inherent charisma and soul. And just these things that it s almost like meeting somebody when you see this film, you know what I mean? You re not just watching a film, you re meeting somebody.Absolutely.Har el: You re not really meeting the filmmaker, or not only meeting the filmmaker, you re meeting the moment that brought them together with all of these people who were on this crew and made this film together. But you re just meeting it. Like, I don t know, it s like this feeling. I can t really explain it and I have it sometimes.By the way, speaking about sticking the landing, the film Or — which means “light” in Hebrew — it has one of my favorite actresses in the world; her name is Dana Ivgy and she was absolutely brilliant. And that film s ending has f ked me up for years. I still think about it. If you want a good landing, watch that film, because you re watching the whole film, you think you re watching one thing, and then in the end, you realize what you witnessed. And you re a witness when you see this film. You re a witness. It s amazing. It s unbelievable.William Eadie in Lynne Ramsay s Ratcatcher. (Photo by © First Look International)I also want to make sure I touch on Lynne Ramsay because she illustrates one of the more difficult sides of female filmmaking right now, and that is the gap between films. Because she did Ratcatcher in 99, and then Morvern Callar, and then it was almost 10 years before We Need To Talk About Kevin, and it kind of shows this disparity. Male filmmakers: one good indie film and they re directing a Marvel movie. Which has changed more recently, but she did Ratcatcher and it took almost another decade before we really got her consistently working in Hollywood.Har el: Ratcatcher is such a seminal movie to so many of the filmmakers that I know. I mean, I know that Natasha Braier [the cinematographer who shot Honey Boy], almost every time she shoots a film, she watches Ratcatcher before. And I saw it when I was obviously really young and I couldn t even articulate what I saw in it. I mean, I couldn t really say what I see in cinema until I made cinema in a way. Because, I don t know, I ve never studied it and I wasn t very theoretical about it. I was just very raw about it. There was something about Ratcatcher, though, that literally opened my mind to what s possible in terms of getting into somebody s head and mood and feelings through watching the screen. It’s just a film that I m sure informed so much of what I did in Bombay Beach and a lot of my work, because it just has that nuance. And at the same time, it s just visually yeah, it s just arresting. That was the beginning of the character for me.”“At the same time, I had just moved to LA. I was living in this house up in the Hollywood Hills that was like a friend of a friend of a friend s house. I somehow was paying like 0 a month to live in this glorified closet in a beautiful mansion. I don t quite know how it was arranged, but I remember there were rumors at the time, the rumors amongst the housemates, that it was the third-highest elevated house in all of Hollywood. That Johnny Depp had lived there once… It was on the top of this hill, up this very windy road that I immediately got into a car accident on. Then I didn t have a car, and I was stranded up on this house. I remember looking out on the deck over all of Hollywood and feeling simultaneously on top of the world and never more isolated and alone. That was the beginning of the character for me, the idea of this guy who was living in a house like this who d had every opportunity for success but still couldn t find a way to be happy.”“I really liked the sad episodes of The Simpsons, like ‘Lisa s Substitute’ or ‘Marge Be Not Proud’… That was kind of the tone I was going for.” I’d be lying if I said I was not inspired [by The Simpsons], if I tried to play it cool like, ‘Oh, what’s that show? Never heard of it.’ That was a huge influence on me growing up. There s the sense of the sensibility, the sense of humor. I particularly really liked the sad episodes of The Simpsons, the more emotional episodes like ‘Lisa s Substitute’ or ‘Marge Be Not Proud.’ I remember always loving those and wishing they were all like that, and so that was kind of the tone I was going for early on with BoJack because I want it to feel like a sad episode of The Simpsons. I think what s so great about those episodes in particular is they don t sacrifice jokes for emotion – they are very funny and full of great gags, but they are also very moving as well and very melancholy. Where did this come from?’”“I pitched it as a show that is going to start very fun and goofy, like most adult animated shows, but by the end of its first season, it s going to turn into more of a dramedy along the lines of a live-action show, like a Girls or even Mad Men, which felt a little more unprecedented in the world of animation, to indulge that much in seriousness and emotion. We were going to trick people by making people think it was a typical animated sitcom, but actually by the end of the season, they d be going, ‘Oh my God, why do I have feelings? Where did this come from?’. I always assumed the audience would join us on this ride and go from, ‘Oh, this is fun. This is silly,’ to, ‘Oh my God, I have feelings.’ It never occurred to me that some people might see the silly part and go, ‘Not for me,’ click and not even know that the rest of the show turns into this totally other thing. I think if I were doing it again, I might try to include more clues at the beginning that this was a more serious show. Even then, I think it s hard to do because there are clues in the beginning: In the first episode of the show, BoJack and Diane have like a two-minute conversation on the fleeting nature of happiness, right? That s the thing that everybody loved about the first season, that it did that change and that it was both of those things, that it wasn t just one or the other. When we were working on season two, I definitely felt the confidence of, ‘Let s go further in that direction because that s what the show is. That s the sweet spot.’”“People loved the Grouplove song, and people loved the Patrick Carney/Ralph Carney song. At the end of the day, we thought, ‘Could we do both?’”“Andy Gowan is our music supervisor, and he kind of put the word out to a bunch of different bands and a bunch of different artists, ‘Hey, here s a new show. We re looking for some music.’ We got a lot of responses, and the two that kind of rose to the top for me were this very playful, sing-songy, Grouplove song and this very heavy, spooky Patrick Carney and Ralph Carney song. I remember there was a lot of debate over which song are we going to use, and then as we kept watching, director Mike Roberts put together this incredible sequence of BoJack going through his day, and we played different songs over it to see what felt right. We d bring in people from the crew, we did focus groups, and it was pretty evenly split. People loved the Grouplove song, and people loved the Patrick Carney/Ralph Carney song. At the end of the day, we thought, ‘Could we do both?’ We ended up using the Patrick Carney, Ralph Carney song at the beginning… I think it is a little bit of a hint of what s to come in the show. It does make you think like, ‘Oh, this feels a little more dramatic than like a typical animated, fun sitcom.’ Then I think the Grouplove song [used in the end credits], kind of the opposite, is so fun and bright, and at the end of some of our episodes, which are really downer endings, it almost feels like an ironic poke in the ribs. I ve really enjoyed using that song as juxtaposition against all these different endings. Essentially as the show has gotten more and more serious, it s kind of revealed itself to have new layers to it.”Will Arnett (BoJack), Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Paul F. (Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Netflix) As soon as I saw Will Arnett s name, I was like, ‘Oh my God, yes, that s the guy,’ because he s so funny, but there s also a darkness to him. “The character of BoJack was not written with Will in mind. I wasn t thinking, ‘You know who d be a great, washed up, sad, lonely actor? Will Arnett.’ It was written for this drawing that Lisa Hanawalt had drawn of this horse guy. Then once we were developing the project, we thought, ‘Before we pitch this around, it might help to have some talent attached.’ Linda Lamontagne is our casting director, and she kind of drew up a list: ‘Here are some actors I think would be right for this.’ As soon as I saw Will Arnett s name, I was like, ‘Oh my God, yes, that s the guy,’ because he s so funny, but there s also a darkness to him. I feel like in his gravelly performance, you feel like he s lived a life, and there s a sadness lurking underneath there. Again, he s so funny. I mean, there are lines that we have made BoJack say that I would not have the chutzpah to give to an actor because they re so dopey, but that I knew that Will Arnett could pull them off. I remember in the writer s room, like looking at a line in a script being like, ‘Are we really going to keep this line in? This is so stupid.’ Then we do the table read, and Will Arnett reads it, and it s the funniest thing you ve ever heard. You re like, ‘Oh my God, he took our dumbest stuff, and he spun it into gold.’”“Who would be the funniest person to be judging this booty competition reality show? What if it s Felicity Huffman?”“We ve had a lot of incredible guest stars over the years. Usually, it just happens because we write a script, and then we think, ‘Who would be a good person for this script? Who would be the funniest person to be judging this booty competition reality show? What if it s Felicity Huffman?’ Then we go to them, and they usually say ‘yes,’ which is crazy. Occasionally, we ll hear something like, ‘Oh, this person s a big fan of the show.’ Then we ll keep them in mind if there s a part for them to play.When anybody likes the show, it s a shock and a delight to me, and it feels great, and it makes me suspicious that they re tricking me. Then when we ve had people come on the show or people that I ve seen, who have been heroes of mine, tell me they re fans of the show, that completely blows my mind. To have Weird Al Yankovic, who I grew up with, come be a guest star on the show and tell me personally that he really loves the show, my brain can t process that. I don t know how to take that kind of compliment, and I quickly change the subject to something else.”Amy Sedaris is Princess Carolyn. (Photo by © Netflix)“We wanted to, through Princess Carolyn, explore what is it like being another person in this person s life? That episode, ‘Say anything,’ has the first really sad ending of the series.”“I think a big turning point for our show happens in that first season at really episode seven and episode eight, which are called ‘Say Anything’ and ‘The Telescope.’ ‘Say Anything’ is episode seven, and that s an episode that s entirely told from Princess Carolyn s perspective. Up to that moment, almost everything that s happened in the show has been through BoJack[’s perspective]. A few episodes had small B stories or C stories, but they re really heavy A-story episodes. Then to switch it and be like, ‘No, BoJack is the side story this time, it’s really focused on this other character,’ felt like a bit of a departure for us. BoJack kind of falls into some sort of wreckage and steps out and like dusts himself off and wanders into the next misadventure. We wanted to, through Princess Carolyn, explore what is it like being another person in this person s life? What is it like attaching yourself to this kind of toxicity? That episode, ‘Say Anything,’ has the first really sad ending of the series. Everything up until then had been pretty light – or maybe we d end on like a dark kind of joke – but ‘Say Anything’ really ends on a serious, kind of sad moment with this lonely character. That for me was a real sign of where we wanted to go.”

When the Russo Bros.-produced action-thriller Extraction landed on Netflix in April, it arrived with all the heft of a major theatrical release. Much of that was because quarantined fans were dying for something big and splashy and new to watch – anything, really, that felt like going to the movies – but it was also because the film came with the kind of big-budget action set pieces usually reserved for the big screen – and the big-screen leading man, Chris Hemsworth, to go with it. Extraction s story is simple: Hemsworth s Tyler Rake (yep, that s his character s name!) is a mercenary hired to extract a kidnapped teenage boy from the clutches of a Bangladeshi crime boss, and he must contend with countless nameless baddies to achieve his goal. The action, though, is anything but: close-combat John Wick-style tussles, epic single-shot sequences, Bond-level escapes from hairy, bullet-filled situations. Fans have been eating it up; but it s a short-lived meal. When the smoke on Extraction has cleared, and you re looking for something to keep the adrenaline pumping, we ve got some suggestions for you. It must ve been, I guess, in the summer of 2004, and the producers Adam Siegel and Jared LeBoff, who were producers on Scott Pilgrim, cornered me, and they had a copy of the first book, which was the only one out at the time, Scott Pilgrim s Precious Little Life: Volume 1, and they cornered me and they said, ‘This is your next movie.’ I was like, ‘Okay!’ They said, ‘It s like John Hughes meets Kill Bill.’ I said, Well, I like that idea.’ So they gave me the comic, and, they were half right, because I did make it into a movie, but it wasn t my next movie – I made Hot Fuzz next – but I really responded to the material.I loved the metaphor of the book. Bryan Lee O’Malley had written this book about how dating life and relationships and having to be mature in relationships was like a battleground; charting this journey to being with the woman who you think you re in love with is like a tournament in a martial arts film. I thought that was really interesting, the idea of fighting for a relationship, dealing with the baggage of a new partner, all of those things that you deal with in real life, but to do it in a really fantastical way. Anybody that was more – and this sounds like a sort of criticism of Michael, but it s not – but anybody who was more obviously studly and macho, didn t seem to me like the right thing for Scott Pilgrim. If we’d have cast super-fit Zac Efron, it s not quite the same movie, because it would seem like Zac Efron could handle himself in a fight, because he s like ridiculously ripped, whereas it was more funny and more relatable watching somebody like Michael A) be like a Romeo, and B) be like this amazing fighter. That to me was inherently funny. “She came in and auditioned against some more established people and just wiped the floor with them.” Brie Larson had been like a sort of child actor and even a teen pop star, but I remember she came in and auditioned against some more established people than her, and just like wiped the floor with them. Her audition, if you ve ever seen it on the Blu-ray, was just like extraordinary – and she was like 19. I remember I was in the room when she auditioned, and I was with Jared LeBoff, and we looked at each other and it was like, ‘We gotta cast her. Like, she was just amazing. There s [also] a thing, like Michael Caine, his school of acting, page one is, ‘Don t blink on a close-up,’ it s like classic Michael Caine technique: ‘Never blink on a close-up, it disempowers you, and it makes you look weak.’ And it s true, if somebody doesn t know their lines, they re blinking like crazy, so I sort of thought it was a good thing [to ask for no blinking]. If you look at Brie Larson s performance, particularly, she s so strong and so unblinking, so we got into this thing not blinking during takes, and they used to call me the blink Nazi’ on set. Nigel [Godrich, the movie’s composer] was the one who said, ‘You should just ask Beck – Beck would love doing this; he would love reconnecting with his low-fi slacker roots.’ And so, it was Nigel who suggested Beck [write the music for Sex Bob-omb], and I thought maybe Beck wouldn t wanna do it, because maybe he s Beck and it s too small for him. But he loved it. Over one weekend, he basically did this demo of, like, 27 songs or something crazy.We d put artwork all around his studio, in his house, and he did it with like an 8-track, and it was just him and one other musician, Brian LeBarton. I remember on Sunday night Nigel texted me and said, ‘Hey, we ve got something,’ and then we went round, he had the CD, and then we drove around Los Angeles in the car listening to Sex Bob-omb, and basically that s the only real work that Beck did on the movie. Because here’s the thing: the demos that he d done were exactly the right sound, and Nigel said, ‘Why would you finish them anymore than this?’ – because this is what Sex Bob-omb could do. Sex Bob-omb wouldn t sound super polished, why don t we just use these? (Photo by Double Negative/©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)“If you’re gonna make a musical, or a martial arts film, no two fights should be the same.” One of the things I really liked about martial art films from the 70s and 80s – the work of Jackie Chan particularly, and also early John Woo films – is that they had this kinda structure that was like an MGM musical. If you watch a Jackie Chan film from the late 70s through the 80s, you can see that there are elements where they ve got the structure of like a Gene Kelly musical. So if you’re gonna make a musical, or a martial arts film, no two fights [or musical numbers] should be the same, the number of combatants in a fight should be different every time. There should be some new novelty every time, or some new setting, or something that makes it interesting. So we sort of had to think of it in those terms: the second fight, with Lucas Lee, isn t really a fight with Lucas Lee, it s Scott Pilgrim fighting his henchman, you know, like in a video game; the third fight is a face-off; or the fourth fight is not really between Scott and the ex, it s mostly between Roxie and Ramona, and then Scott gets brought into it. Just imagine doing a gym session with Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman. There s amazing stunt work by doubles in the movie, but also everybody that s in the fight scenes – Mary, Michael, Mae, Jason, Ellen – really worked so hard on those sequences. Probably my fondest memory of the entire shoot was actually before we started filming, the stunt training we did every morning with the stunt team – just working out with the whole cast was really funny. Just imagine doing a gym session with Michael Cera and Jason Schwartzman, and Chris Evans, and Brandon Routh, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Michael Cera was incredibly safety conscious, as you should be if you re doing fight scenes, but like maybe above and beyond. If he was doing a scene with a sword, he would have a short version of the sword, and he would be swishing around with the short version, and then for the effects part we would get a stunt double and bring in the long version, and be swishing that around.Michael was doing this take where he s fighting the henchman in the club, and Michael is saying like, ‘Am I I m not too close, everybody okay?’ and they re like, ‘Yeah, you can t hurt us, go as close as you dare, it s gonna be fine, don t worry.’ So Michael s doing his thing, being very conscientious. He then goes off to get a coffee, we do the take with the long sword, and then in the first take – bam! – one of the stuntmen gets hit in the teeth with the long sword and it knocks the teeth out. Then the teeth are on the floor, but also on the floor are thousands of coins. One of my most surreal memories of the shoot, is like myself and the entire stunt team looking on this nightclub floor for two front teeth in the middle of a bunch of coins. Disney’s new version of The Lion King is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. But will it satisfy expectations? deason 2 finale seemingly resolves this by severing Djarin from his cub. But considering all the times we heard about their bond — and the marketing slam dunk surrounding Grogu — we doubt it will be too long before they are reunited.What is the Book of Boba Fett? As the stinger scene came to a close, it revealed The Book of Boba Fett will begin in December 2021. Presumably, this will be the program s third season with a new focus on the infamous bounty hunter as he takes Jabba s place in the galactic underworld. But is that all we ll get? Season 2 left Djarin with a lot to process, and we d hate to go a whole season without seeing him working through it. At the same time, we d love to see Fett round up bounty hunters like IG-88, Dengar, and Bossk to enact whatever plans he has in mind. We also need to see the infamous crime-ridden world of Nar Shaddaa realized in live action. Also, the instant disdain Kryze and Fett had for one another is worth exploring. Fett s claim to be recognized as a Mandalorian in Chapter 14 is pretty strong. Perhaps resolving his status — a point of contention which even predates the Expanded Universe — will also be an aspect of the story.Of course, there is some confusion about The Book of Boba Fett being its own standalone series. Until we get a clarifying press release, we will assume it is the program s next phase.UPDATE: Favreau appeared on GMA to give a few details, including the news that The Book of Boba Fett is a full series arriving in December 2021.READ MORE: Everything We Know About The Book of Boba Fett”Will Djarin and Kryze actually fight? It is curious to see Kryze sticking to the letter of the law this time. Back on Star Wars: Rebels, Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) was able to hand her the Darksaber without even so much as a verbal sparring session — although, the two women certainly had enough arguments in the past to count as a fair fight. This time, though, it appears she needs to win the Darksaber. It seems Gideon may have undermined her authority in the past by revealing how she came into possession of the weapon. Now, she s taking no chances. But if Djarin continues to wear his armor after revealing his face to Grogu and Luke, Kryze is now the inflexible adherent to a Way, which only undermines her cause. Will she learn not to be as hidebound or will the two have to fight for the throne? As Sackhoff told us recently, Just because she thinks that she is the rightful ruler and just because she thinks she’s ready to lead doesn’t mean she is. Will Djarin sit the throne of Mandalore? Then again, Djarin s destiny may be something he definitely doesn t want: the throne of Mandalore itself. As he was a foundling brought up in the Way of the Mandalore, he is not Mando by blood or a member of one of the clans. It both makes him a good candidate for leadership and someone who will find nothing by conflict in taking on those duties; nevertheless, it seems clear the series is headed toward the liberation of Mandalore and, for the moment, he holds the Darksaber.Will Gideon weaken the New Republic with the power of his voice? As seen in the finale, Gideon is a threat even when bound. As an ex-ISB officer, it seems unlikely any counterpart in New Republic intelligence will be able to break him; in fact, it seems possible his presence in an interrogation cell could undermine the Republic to such an extent that it sets up in the ineffectual government seen in the Sequel Trilogy. At the same time, Esposito told reporters earlier this year that viewers will learn more about him in the next few seasons: will he use his background as means of weakening his adversaries?Where is Grogu in the Age of Resistance? Some thirty years after the events of Chapter 16, Luke will neglect to tell Rey (Daisy Ridley) about Grogu. In our reality, there are practical reasons for this  The Mandalorian was only beginning development when Star Wars: The Last Jedi was filmed but now that we know Luke will train him, the child s whereabouts in the Sequel Trilogy will have to be accounted for at some point. Of course, this could change if training goes badly and we know Luke isn t the best tutor.
