Much like the DC Comics Multiverse itself, WarnerMedia’s plans for a film Multiverse are always changing. Projects are announced, but then seemingly go into hibernation. The stalwart of the line, Batman, always gets its movies made while Wonder Woman seems poised to join the Dark Knight as a reliable franchise. Superman, sadly, is caught between the worlds of reboots and rival ideas.Nevertheless, DC Films chief Walter Hamada recently revealed a plan to release six DC-related films a year in the coming decade – four will arrive in theaters while two will be made exclusively for HBO Max. The library is certainly deep enough to support such an endeavor. And thanks to Hamada embracing the multiverse concept, it seems plans are in place for a second Batman saga to coincide with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. It all means DC fans will get a lot of content in the next 10 years.Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Batman v SupermanListen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Wonder Woman 1984Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About AquamanThe change is the latest shockwave in the often incredible story of Warner Bros.’ attempts to bring the DC Multiverse to the screen. So before we take a look at the latest changes, let’s go back to the beginning of WB’s ambitious plans for its extended universe…In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment announced a series of movies based on DC Comics characters. The original schedule included a two-part Justice League project and at least two films a year through 2020. Things did not go according to plan, with Justice League compressing its story into one film and projects like Flash experiencing constant delays. Despite projects shifting around the slate – and the critical backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – the original 2014 master plan has been executed for the most part, with only 2018 missing a second DC-derived film and Cyborg disappearing entirely. And even as features like Aquaman and Shazam! went into production, the studio never stopped trying to get new projects off the ground utilizing the comic book characters and the universe initiated by 2013’s Man of Steel. The next several years will deliver a number of projects from that original slate and some surprises in the form of Aquaman 2 and The New Gods. On the TV/streaming front, Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.For now, the following represents everything we know about those projects and their place in the DC Films universe, as well as a few DC adaptations that will exist separate from the universe. (Want to see what the other camp has in store? Check out our breakdown of upcoming Marvel movies.)SEE: Most Anticipated 2021 Movies | Most Anticipated 2022 MoviesComing SoonThere is a lot that is uncertain about which DC Comics characters are coming to the big screen, who s bringing them there, and in what order — but nothing is uncertain about these first movies. They re in production, or in pre- or post-production, and we know exactly when they will be hitting theaters. (At least, we know the latest dates, and will update as those change with COVID-19 leaving the landscape a little uncertain.)The BatmanRelease Date: March 4, 2022What We Know: War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves took over directing duties on The Batman following the departure of Ben Affleck, who intended to star, co-write, and direct. Creative differences saw his role reduced to star even as his personal problems overshadowed the ongoing question about his continued involvement. Late in January of 2019, Warner Bros. announced a release date while Affleck definitively stated he was leaving the cape and cowl behind. (Though not so definitively, if you skip down to our latest update on Flash). A new man behind the mask emerged that May when Robert Pattinson took over the role. That casting choice confirmed the story would revolve around a younger Batman, and Reeves has confirmed that, telling DC FanDome it will be set during Year Two when a serial killer is stalking Gotham. Across late summer and early Fall, the cast began to round out with Jeffrey Wright joining up as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano taking on The Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz signing on as Catwoman. In November, word broke indicating Colin Farrell would play The Penguin and Andy Serkis would be the new face of Alfred Pennyworth. Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Alex Ferns as Commissioner Pete Savage, John Turturro as Falcone, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Rumors also suggest a new Two-Face will also emerge. Stacking the film with almost all of the notable Batman villains is something of a change for modern Batman movies, which generally only use two at a time – although Batman Begins featured a whopping five when you count lesser known characters like Carmine Falcone, Joe Chill, and Victor Zsasz alongside The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Despite a member of the crew – allegedly star Robert Pattinson himself – coming down with the coronavirus, the film seemed poised to hold its October 2021 release date until Dune took its slot during a subsequent change to the calendar. The film is now scheduled for March of 2022. During DC FanDome in October of 2021, Warner Bros. released a second trailer for the film, featuring a greater emphasis on Catwoman and the Riddler. Additionally, Reeves, Pattinson, and Kravitz offered some comments about the film, with Kravitz calling her Catwoman someone who “wants to fight for those who don’t have someone.” Reeves added that the film will feature a number of “iconic” moments with the character even if she doesn’t map 1:1 to comic book Catwoman.Recommended: Everything We Know About The Batman How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The project s ties to the established film continuity are questionable. Late in 2018, rumors began to emerge that Reeves’ vision for the film set it outside the Man of Steel universe as a “standalone” story, like Joker. The studio moved quickly to quash the rumors, but it now seems clear the film will exist in its own universe with a HBO Max spin-off series already in development.Black Adam(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: July 29, 2022What We Know: After listening to fans when he was initially interested in Shazam!, Johnson signed on to star in a film featuring that character’s greatest nemesis, Black Adam. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with Noah Centineo on board as well to play Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher, whose superpower is his super strength and ability to grow  huge. At DC FanDome, Johnson showed two clips. One, produced by Jim Lee and Boss Logic which gave fans a quick rundown of the character s origins – formerly enslaved, he s in the pursuit of Justice the Black Adam way. The other introduced the idea of the Justice Society of America, and revealed that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher would feature in the film. In late September 2020, Aldis Hodge emerged as Hawkman, but the news was soon tempered as the film lost its December 22, 2021 release date entirely during the shuffling of Warner Bros. release slate 10 days later. As for most of the project’s existence, it is once again unclear when it will be released. But with members of the cast already assembled, it is possible the film will arrive in 2023. Aiding this possibility: Sarah Shahi joined the cast in October with a role described as both a professor and freedom fighter. In the months following, Quintessa Swindell joined the cast as JSAer Cyclone and Marwan Kenzari signed up for an as-yet undisclosed role; Pierce Brosnan will star as Dr. Fate. Additional cast members include Bodhi Sabongui and James Cusati-Moyer. In March 2021, a release date was finally announced, with Johnson taking over billboards in Times Square to reveal the movie will release July 29, 2022. In early June, Shahi finally confirmed her character is Adrianna Tomaz – or some version of the DC character. The next month, Johnson released a photo teasing his Black Adam body suit and, later in July, announced he wrapped filming via his Instagram. A brief clip featuring the resurrection of Black Adam was released during the 2021 DC FanDome in October, suggesting the character may not be much of a morning person. A behind-the-scenes reel also offered a few glimpses of Dr. Fate’s helmet and Adam’s costume.(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam, so their film worlds are definitely connected. But he is also a fairly complicated anti-hero when dealing with anyone else. Heroic one moment and brutal the next, Adam could emerge as the powerful leader of his own country – an idea straight from the comic books. At DC FanDome, Johnson hinted that the movie could feature an appearance from Superman, and sent a warning to all those in the Justice League: The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. The Flash(Photo by DC)Release Date: November 4, 2022What We Know: A Flash film starring Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen featured in Justice League is finally getting made. After losing multiple directors – among them, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa – and undergoing a title change from The Flash to Flashpoint and back again, the nature of the film is finally coming into focus as we ve learned that Allen will crash through multiple dimensions to change his mother s fate in an adaptation of DC s ambitious 2011 Flashpoint event comic book series, and meet various versions of some of DC s biggest heroes along the way. It helmer Andy Muschietti signed on as the project s fifth director in July, and at DC FanDome revealed a first look at concept art for Allen s new suit, which features embedded light and was made by Bruce Wayne. And someone else has signed on, too. Ben Affleck will return in a small, cameo-style role as the version of Batman we ve seen in Justice League, while Michael Keaton returns, too, as the Batman we met in 1989 s Batman; Muschietti told Vanity Fair that Keaton s role is substantial. Rudy Mancuso will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role. In March of 2021, Kiersey Clemons, who signed on to play Iris West back when Famuyiwa was going to direct, recommitted to project. Additionally, word broke soon after indicating Maribel Verdú will play Barry’s mother Nora, but due to scheduling conflicts, Billy Crudup will not reprise his Justice League role as Barry’s father Henry. Ron Livingston will play the part instead. Michael Keaton, after suggesting he might leave the project, recommitted late in the summer. His appearance in the film was also teased during a sizzle reel for the film at DC FanDome 2021, which also featured a great look at Barry’s new suit and a first glimpse at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: With the story focusing on the Flashpoint storyline – in which Barry’s attempt to save his mother wrecks the universe – the film will feature Ben Affleck as the Batman, as well as Michael Keaton, and may include other familiar faces. A promo package at DC FanDome also suggested Allen may encounter DC heroes from TV and streaming, with multiple clips of Watchmen playing as the panel discussed the Flashpoint possibilities. And considering how the original Flashpoint comic book radically altered the DC Comics universe, the film may bring about the end of the DCEU as we knew it.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Release Date: December 16, 2022What We Know: James Wan returns to direct the sequel. According to reports following the first film s stunning box office debut in December of 2018, the studio wanted Wan to develop the project while he decided whether or not to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a co-writer on the first film, soon emerged to write the follow-up, and Warner Bros. set it for a 2022 release at the end of February last year. Presumably, any sequel storyline will feature the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his thirst for revenge. We’re also going to presume a wedding between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) will occur. Wan will direct the sequel after completing work on the horror film Malignant, due out later this year, and told DC FanDome that the movie will have a more serious tone compared with the original, and that new worlds will be explored. At the same panel, he was joined by Patrick Wilson, and the pair confirmed that Ocean Master will return for the sequel. For the moment, the film is still expected to be the DC holiday release of 2022 – a year now packed full of films based on comic book characters from Warner Bros. and other studios. And considering The Flash is expected in theaters a month earlier, Aquaman 2 may switch to a 2023 release. In early June 2021, director James Wan revealed the title of the film. A behind-the-scenes video showcased during October 2021’s DC FanDome unveiled a new look at Black Manta’s updated costume and a black version of Arthur’s armor. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Aquaman’s seas presumably now exist in a universe all their own. That said, it is always possible for one of the characters to seek his help in a stinger scene.Shazam: Fury of the Gods(Photo by DC)Release Date: June 2, 2023What We Know: Well, as of DC FanDome, we know that the title of the movie will be Fury of the Gods, and that Sinbad – who through the Mandela Effect will always be associated with the franchise – may be in it. Other than that, not much. What we do know is that director David F. Sandberg is back, along with star Zachary Levy and co-stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. The credits stinger at the end of Shazam! revealed our hero could be about to face Mister Mind – one of the tiniest but most powerful villains in the DC canon. We also know the film will be the first of Warner Bros.’ DC offerings in 2023 – for the moment – thanks to the October 2020 scheduling shift. In February of 2021, Rachel Zegler joined the production in a reportedly key role, while it s also been announced Helen Mirren will play villain Hespera, daughter of the god Atlas. In April, Lucy Liu signed on to play Kalypso, one of Hespera’s sisters. In May, Mark Strong confirmed he would not return as Dr. Sivana, saying the film is going in a “different direction” than the one suggested in the first film’s stinger. That change of direction was also signaled during DC FanDome, thanks to a behind-the-scenes video featuring Mirren and Liu’s characters and a number of action scenes. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam, anyone? Although that film is not on Warner Bros. release schedule at the moment, the title character’s connection to Shazam means a crossover – and a confrontation – is inevitable. In DevelopmentWith its plans for a Justice League-centric film universe abandoned in favor of more standalone productions like Aquaman and Shazam!, Warner Bros. calendar during the first few years of the 2020s reveals a number of re-thought ideas and, to borrow a term from comics, new #1 issues. At one time, the studio planned to release as many as three films per year, a target it will hit in 2022. But it remains to be seen if the projects listed below will ramp up to maintain the pace.Batgirl(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Originally intended as Joss Whedon’s writing and directing debut in the DC Extended Universe, the project is now being written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson while the studio looks for a director. Presumably, the film will establish Barbara Gordon as the Batgirl of Gotham. Her relationship to the Birds of Prey will likely be established in a subsequent sequel to either film, if at all. But considering Hodson’s involvement in both films, she probably has a plan for Babs. In May of 2021, the project became active again with Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signing on to helm the film, which is now set to be one of the first DC-related direct-to-HBO Max features. In July, the casting process seemingly narrowed in on Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson. Grace won the role later than month with J.K. Simmons entering negotiations to return as Commissioner Jim Gordan, a role he first took on in Justice League. During DC FanDome in October 2021, Grace described the character as a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined.” Co-director El Arbi added that the film will feature “realistic fights.” A piece of production art glimpsed during the presentation also suggests Batgirl will utilize a costume similar to her New 52 look in the comics. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Considering the project comes from developments outside of the original Justice League plan, it is difficult to guess how it will fit in. Perhaps Batgirl will be set sometime in the past or see Barbara taking up the cape and cowl after the Batman appears to quit.Blue Beetle(Photo by DC)What We Know: In February of 2021, word broke revealing Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm a film based on the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. The character is a Mexican-American teenager living in Texas who discovers a scarab that turns out to be an alien battle suit. It gives him fantastic powers, but makes his life much more complicated. In August, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña entered talks to play the lead role. The film joins Batgirl as one of two DC productions for HBO Max. Maridueña, Soto, and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer made an appearance at the October 2021 DC FanDome. All expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Dunnet-Alcocer saying the chance to showcase a Mexican-American superhero is a key part of the appeal. “That closeness of family is part of what sets him apart,” he said. An accompanying production painting also suggests the Blue Beetle costume will be surprisingly faithful to its comic book counterpart. How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Like Static Shock and some of the other projects, we’re going to assume the film takes place on the same Earth Barry establishes in The Flash. If so, it gives Jaime a chance to join whatever Justice League we might see in the future.Wonder Woman 3Release Date: TBAWhat We Know: Hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984’s box office success – well, at least in 2020 metrics – Warner Bros. announced a third film was being fast tracked. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are set to return. Jenkins also said the film will finally bring Diana s film series to the present day. Of course, with Jenkins heading off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it may be another four years (at least) before Wonder Woman returns. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Presuming Diana’s world still aligns to the DC Extended Universe continuity, Diana will finally be a public superhero and, perhaps, serving as an Amazonian ambassador to the world of men. In fact, reuniting her with her people after a century has a very dramatic appeal following the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Of course, if the Wonder Woman films are retroactive placed elsewhere in the Multiverse, the story could go in just about any direction. The Other BatmanRelease Date: TBAWhat We Know: In a New York Times profile of Hamada, the DC Films chief made a curious reference to the Multiverse making two Batman feature film sagas possible. One will likely continue the story of The Batman while the other will … well, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The events of Flash may give Ben Affleck’s Batman a new face in the DCEU. Or, perhaps, Hamada has convinced him to keep the cowl on for subsequent appearances. Then again, maybe HBO Max will get its own Batman. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Again, this all depends on the DCEU as we knew it existing after The Flash. But presuming this Batman is meant to interact with the other DC heroes in the established film universe, it is easy to see that aspect of his career invade any solo movies he may star in. Or perhaps, he will finally take on allies in Gotham to support spinoffs like Nightwing and Batgirl.Green Lantern CorpsRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: Announced back with Cyborg in the 2014 masterplan, Green Lantern Corps continues to slowly move forward. In June of 2018, former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns took over writing and producing the project through his production company, Mad Ghost Productions. According to the company website, the film will feature both the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film), and John Stewart, the Green Lantern voiced by Phil LaMarr in various Justice League animated series. An earlier concept developed by Man of Steel’s David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was said to be a sort of “Lethal Weapon in space” – a description which may still hold true for Johns’ concept as he worked with Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner for a number of years. With Johns participating in a Green Lantern television series for HBO Max, the project would seem to be postponed again though it is said to still be a priority for Warner Bros. Pictures. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Teased in a Justice League flashback, the lack of an Earthbound Green Lantern is part of the reason Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) chose the planet for conquest. But the film would presumably see the Corps correcting that mistake by revealing the brave humans involved in that organization. No doubt the fans of Jordan and Stewart – to say nothing of characters like Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and G’Nort, who could potentially appear in the film – will be excited to see them in an ensemble. Additionally, the film would provide a perfect platform with which to introduce DC’s space-faring characters to a larger audience. At one time, the film was slotted for a 2020 release, but with the announcement of a HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unclear if the film will ever surface.SupergirlRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: The Cloverfield Paradox’s Oren Uziel is reportedly writing a script based on the Girl of Steel. Like The Flash feature film, it will presumably ignore the successful television series on The CW and tell its own version of Kara Zor-El’s first few days as a superhero on Earth. With Man of Steel star Henry Cavill s DC future in doubt, it is unlikely that Superman will show up and help greet the cinematic Kara. The producers of the 1984 Supergirl film also tried to get then-Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in the film, but his presence was limited to a poster on a dorm room wall. In February 2021, The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle was cast as Kara for an appearance in The Flash feature. Presumably, she will lead Supergirl as well, but it currently unclear. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: If Calle continues as Kara, The Flash will determine if she’s the Supergirl of Barry’s Earth – our de facto DCEU – or one of the Mutliversal realities he visits in the film.Cyborg(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Ray Fisher has been set to star as Vic Stone in a 2020 Cyborg film since 2014, but no director or screenwriter were announced. Many doubted the film will ever materialize despite still being on the calendar. In September of 2018, Fisher suggested fans of the character may need to become more vocal to make the film a reality. In the summer of 2020, Fisher launched a campaign to expose Joss Whedon’s allegedly abusive behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. As the situation expanded to former DC Films chiefs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Fisher vowed never to work with current DC Films boss Walter Hamada – whom he alleged was pressuring him to take back his accusations about Johns. Subsequently, Cyborg’s planned role in The Flash was written out and, presumably, any chance of a solo film outing went with it.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Frankly, we’ll be surprised if Cyborg ever resurfaces in the current DC Films structure, Multiverse or no.BlackhawkRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: While it is unclear if Blackhawk will be part of the DC film universe, it is a favorite comic book of director Steven Spielberg. He even tried to get a Blackhawk movie off the ground in the 1980s. The current version of the project will see him direct a film based on the golden-age Quality Comics concept later bought by DC in 1957 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp adapting the concept. The main character is the leader of the Blackhawks squadron, a famed air outfit of seven ace pilots during World War II. When DC incorporated them into a post-war context, they became mercenaries, battled James Bond-style supervillains, and even flirted with becoming superheroes themselves! Considering the director’s fascination with the Second World War and aviation of the period, the original Golden Age version seems like the best fit, provided the film ever gets off the ground. How It Fits In The DC Multiverse: While current narrative conceits allow the film to take place in the past of Barry’s Earth, the Multiverse means the project could be as closely or loosely tied to other films as Spielberg wants. That is presuming, of course, he’s still interested in making it.Untitled Jared Leto Joker Project(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to reports, Jared Leto will star and serve as executive producer in his own solo Joker film – a deal which happens to be quite similar to Robbie’s involvement in Birds of Prey. Details are scarce, other than it will be a separate project from both the “Joker and Harley” concept and the standalone Joker. It will also spearhead a batch of films based on the characters featured in Suicide Squad, which means rumors of that Deadshot movie might be more than idle talk. Then again, it has been a long time since the actor has made any mention of returning to the role. Also, the announcement of a Peacemaker HBO Max series – centered on The Suicide Squad character played John Cena – may indicate the original spin-off plan has gone by the wayside. It would seem Leto’s time in the DC Multiverse is already over. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The Leto Joker was not only featured in Suicide Squad, but is also the murderer of Batman’s second Robin, as implied in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of Birds of Prey, his relationship with Harley is kaput, setting the two characters off in separate films series. If the “Joker and Harley” project is still happening, then it may serve as a capstone to the characters storylines across The Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Leto’s Joker. But it may also serve as a replacement for that film as Robbie’s Harley projects may preclude “Joker and Harley.” Of course, Joker’s success – and Leto’s comments about being “alienated and upset” when it was announced – may mean the end of this version of the character. His appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the very nature of the Multiverse offer some glimmers of hope, however.Joker 2(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Thanks to the success of the first Joker, a follow-up was inevitable, but details remained scarce through 2020. In May of 2021, word broke indicating the project is still in development with a surprising new tie to the larger DC Multiverse. Star Joaquin Phoenix and direct Todd Philipps will presumably return. Although the early reports were refuted, the more recent claim suggests Phillips is already writing the script. How It Fits Into the DC Multiverse: According to the May 2021 report, the film will tie into The Batman and its spinoff HBO Max series, Gotham PD. If this proves to be true, it is a change from the original film’s entirely standalone nature. Additionally, the two Joker films, The Batman, and Gotham PD would constitute the first true separate universe from the one established in Man of Steel.NightwingRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: As of February 2018, The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay was still developing a project centered on the first Robin, Dick Grayson. A final draft from screenwriter Bill Dubuque was due at the time, but there has been no movement since. Reportedly, the film has been postponed in anticipation of The Batman, which may ultimately introduce its own version of Dick Grayson. In June of 2021, McKay told CinemaBlend, I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: As established in Justice League, the Robin costume in the Batcave is not Dick Grayson’s uniform, suggesting plans for Nightwing go all the way back to the 2014 masterplan. A solo film would presumably see the character living in Bludhaven (Grayson’s adopted city in the comics) and coming to grips with becoming his own hero. McKay also plans to direct a new Dungeons Dragons film and a feature film version of Johnny Quest, so it is hard to tell if Nightwing will happen anytime soon. Last time McKay was asked about it, he said fans will have (Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures )Who will win?Once Upon a Time... As Russell Bufalino, he s all quiet menace, and steals the show from under (the also excellent) Pacino and De Niro.Best Director Motion Picture(Photo by Dominique Charriau/WireImage)Who will win?Bong Joon-ho – Parasite (2019) 98%Who should win? The Bong Hive – that vocal group of online fans who ve embraced the director with the fervor of an early 2010s One Direction fan – will have reason to celebrate Sunday, and deservedly so. With Parasite, still at 99% on the Tomatometer, Bong Joon-ho did the near-impossible: created a stateside stir with a foreign film. Surprising, thrilling, hilarious – Parasite is not eligible for major film categories, and here is where it will get its justice. Unless, that is, the epicness of The Irishman or technical wizardry of 1917 dazzle the HFPA enough to cause an upset.Best Screenplay Motion PictureWho will win?Marriage Story (2019) 94%Who should win? Hard to argue with Noah Baumbach s deeply personal, beautifully observed, and very, well, wordy divorce tale taking home the prize. But we think Bong Joon-ho s bracing, inventive, and richly allegorical Parasite would be the (slightly) more deserving choice.

7.65.4 3月喜迎(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)In a recent interview, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo thanked the fans for their passion in working out their own theories for the upcoming film’s resolution. They also claimed some they have seen have come close, but none have worked out exactly how the Avengers will undo the damage wrought by Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his infamous Snap at the conclusion of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Nonetheless, we thought we’d take a look at a few of the theories, their plausibility, and their chances for success versus the Mad Titan and his seemingly infinite powers. After all, fans correctly deduced “Endgame” would be the fourth film’s subtitle long before Marvel Studios revealed it themselves. So maybe there s something to the ideas, memes, and one big joke of a theory floating out in the greater Internet. Here are six hypotheses we like the best – and their likelihood of coming true. The Direct Approach(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)As outlined in a clip that debuted in early April, the surviving Avengers could just go to Thanos’ garden planet and try to take the Gauntlet from him directly. As Carol (Brie Larson) notes, her powers definitely tip the scales in terms of raw strength. Combine her abilities with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and possibly the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) – if he can be coaxed out of hiding – and you have a team capable of pushing a planet out of orbit.Plausibility: Considering the clip, it seems almost a certainty the Avengers will try this approach.Chance of Success: Unlikely. Since we’re now using Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) hair to denote the passage of time within Endgame, it seems this operation into space will occur shortly after the events of Infinity War. It also seems doomed to failure as the powers of the Gauntlet are more awesome than even the mightiest Avengers combined. And we suspect this is a key story point in the film. While so many of the Avengers have defeated their opponents by just being more powerful, nothing seen in the universe so far rivals the forces Thanos can muster in his left hand. Success may require more finesse than fisticuffs and plasma bolts. The Ant-Man Option(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)You’ve definitely heard about this meme-worthy idea. Ant-Man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) shrinks himself into a small form and enters Thanos via a very uncomfortable spot in human physiology that many presume also exists on the big, purple alien. Scott resizes to normal and explodes the Mad Titan in a moment more befitting a Garth Ennis comic book than a Marvel Studios release.Plausibility: Unlikely. But maybe the Endgame filmmakers are sly enough to make some sort of joke about this tactic while the team weighs their options.Chance of Success: 100% if Scott was willing to do something so awful. Once Thanos is disposed of in this grim fashion, it would require only the simple gesture of one of the Avengers – say Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to undo the Snap. Of course, the emotional fallout from this strateg may be almost as bad as allowing Thanos to succeed. Scott would be a wreck for the rest of his days, for one thing, and the peoples of the universe would still face the scars of the time they lost loved ones and vehicles of all manner came crashing down from the sky.Time Travel(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)By far the most popular theories involve Scott using his ability to enter the Quantum Realm as a means of moving the team through time. The concept would see the crew seeding the means of opposing Thanos in their own pasts, allowing knowledge of events to reshape the situation in Infinity War and possibly averting the Snap entirely.Plausibility: Considering the case made for the matching Avengers uniforms in the most recent trailer containing various Pym technologies, we’re willing to buy into this one. But since we’re also a cautious sort, we’ll call this a 60% likely hypothesis.Chances of Success: Fifty-fifty. The variables here are insane. For one thing, Tony needs to recall every mistake made on Titan, Thor somehow needs to make “go for the head” the most pressing message across his history, and Captain America (Chris Evans) would need to convince himself that sacrificing Vision (Paul Bettany) is the best course of action. And those are just examples of things they could do with the people who survived. Making Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) a better man, keeping the Soul and Time Stones out of Thanos’ reach, and maybe even planting counterfeit stones across the universe might be more than the surviving Avengers can pull off. Nonetheless, many are convinced the Bill Ted–style solution is the the one Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) saw working when he scanned the 14 million possible outcomes.Luis One-Punches Thanos(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)Luis (Michael Pena) clocks Thanos and grabs the Gauntlet while he is out.Plausibility: More unlikely than Scott giving the Mad Titan the most epic GI discomfort ever known.Chances of Success: We’ve always been fans of this joking answer to the problem of Thanos ever since Luis first boasted about one-punching the toughest man in San Quentin. It seemed so ripe for a payoff later on that we still hope Luis survived the Snap and ends up in the final battle against Thanos. Sure, the Titan s raw stamina is likely many times the force Luis could apply to one good hit, but we’re going to root for him anyway.Talking Him Into It(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)While Tony utterly failed at talking to Thanos, it is always possible the combined experiences of Tony, Cap, Thor, and some of the others may be able to make him see things differently. As Doctor Who once observed, the fighting just delays the fact that, ultimately, people will have to sit down and talk. That garden planet could be a lovely backdrop for the most important philosophical discussion of the age.Plausibility: This is still a blockbuster superhero movie. They have to fight.Chances of Success: While reuniting the original cinematic Avengers for this discourse against Thanos’ grim calculus has a certain thematic appeal – Tony and Cap have to mend their relationship to do it – the Mad Titan’s seemingly enlightened reasoning for killing half of the universe is really just a veneer. And should the team actually have a conversation with him, they will ultimately see he had the ambition to slaughter countless lives before he had a supposedly logical reason for doing it. But perhaps that realization may lead Thanos to stand down and give the Gauntlet to the Avengers. Maybe it could work.Involving the Living Tribunal (Photo by @ Marvel Studios)The Avengers could always appeal to a higher power. Surely in Carol’s decades of traveling space, she’s come across the awesome force known as the Living Tribunal. It is a cosmic entity charged with maintaining the balance across all of reality. Back in the comics, the Living Tribunal was powerful enough to prevent the Infinity Stones from being used all at once and – should it exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – could potentially call a great cosmic do-over on the whole affair.Plausibility: In screenwriting terms, introducing the Living Tribunal at this late date would be the biggest of deus ex machinas and many would see it as a huge cop-out. The Avengers should solve this on their own without the aid of any other demigods besides Thor. The sense that it would be a cop-out will likely prevent it from happening.Chances of Success: But even if it is a huge deus ex machina, it would still be effective. In the pages of The Infinity Gauntlet, cosmic entities prove distracting enough that Nebula has the chance to take the Gauntlet from Thanos, forcing him to ally with his foes in order to stop her from using its power. We do not expect to meet the Living Tribunal, Mistress Death, or the Beyonders at this point, but it would certainly be a huge surprise.Like this? The CW’s Black Lightning has always been a world apart from its superhero cousins on the network. Originally developed as a show for Fox, it always took the concepts of superpowers and the DC Comics metahumans a metaphor for something much closer to our reality. Its inciting incident — the deployment of a vaccine said to prevent a virulent disease, but truly design to stimulate the metagenes in the population of Freeland — has its origins in things like the Tuskegee Study and the CIA’s alleged introduction of crack cocaine into the inner cities in the 1980s.In the world of Black Lightning, the meta-vaccine operation was conducted by a shadowy government agency known as the ASA, and their tactics have left a lasting mark on Freeland as a whole and central character Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) in particular. Even as the series sprawled out to tell the tales of Jefferson’s family, his arch-rival Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III), and Jefferson s mentor Peter Gambi (James Remar), it’s never lost sight of the ASA. In fact, it is possible they are Black Lightning’s ultimate adversaries. But at the moment, they also have Freeland in lockdown – an occupation officially meant to keep Freeland’s meta population safe from agents of a foreign power, Markovia, desperate to snatch up metas in a latter-day arms race. The story may echo the CIA’s activities during the later parts of the Cold War, but in illustrating the effects of an actual military occupation on U.S. soil, the show enters unprecedented ground. The stakes have never been higher. As Williams put it when Rotten Tomatoes visited the Atlanta soundstages where the show is produced, “It s much more than just corner boys and Tobias trying to just take over the city for his own power. In fact, we got the distinct impression Freeland’s old normal will never be restored. But, as Williams told us, “The ‘back to normal’ Freeland was never like this idealistic place It was always, you know, it was flawed. There was crime. It s why [Jefferson] had to originally put the suit back on in the first place.” Nonetheless, Williams felt it is important for the Occupation to end, even if “we get back to just that” because Freeland is ultimately part of the United States and rights are being trampled on in the current situation.Granted, the ASA Agent-in-Charge, Odell (Bill Duke), would disagree. When we spoke to Duke, he mentioned Odell firmly believes the Occupation is ultimately protecting Americans from a rogue nation. His methods, though, leave much to be desired. For instance, he kept both Jefferson and his wife, Dr. Lynn Stewart’s (Christine Adams) in a mandatory hold at a secret facility for months and once he had to let them go, he planted subliminal messages in Lynn s living space suggesting she experiment with Green Light, the power-enhancing drug taking the place for crack in the program’s ongoing storyline. When it was suggested manipulating Lynn was evil, Duke said, What really is evil?  It is a question the show is gearing up to address, but in the interim, Lynn is abusing Green Light.“You’re definitely going to see Lynn in a way you ve never seen her before,” Adams said of Lynn under the drug’s influence. Her first few attempts to synthesize a safe, non-addictive Green Light gave her increased brain efficiency and allowed her to find a cure for a Markovian virus meant to kill Freeland s meta population. But it’s also made her obsessive about her work and created another rift between her and Jefferson. Then again, the fragility of their marriage is another one of the show’s ongoing plots.“I think it definitely makes sense for their relationship to go like this,” Adams said. But she added the Occupation is putting a very specific stress on them. “They know too much. They ve seen too much. I mean, they would have to be PTSD if nothing else … like, put them all in therapy. That s what I would do.”Their time at The Pit, the ASA’s black site in Freeland, also put Black Lightning off his footing, but Williams suggested the change in outlook may ultimately be beneficial.“I think he s angrier, and I think he has the right to be,” he said. “Going from season 1, his school was successful, his daughters were safe, and then you progress to being locked up for over a month and then coming out to an occupation and nobody s safe. He s tried to do things the right way and play by the rules and sees the repercussions of that.”At the moment, an agreement with Odell means he cannot act against the ASA, but it is only a matter of time before he learns the full scope of the agent’s machinations and, perhaps, joins the Resistance. And then there’s Tobias. Though he is locked up in The Pit, Williams said that Jefferson’s feelings about Tobias haven t changed. The feeling is mutual. Though Jones was unwilling to suggest when or how Tobias might escape The Pit, he said Black Lightning is the only person who should worry if and when that prison break occurs.“I think it s always going to be Black Lightning,” he added, though he said another confrontation between Tobias and the unkillable Lala (William Catlett) is inevitable. “[They’re] almost like Kobe and Shaq, where they re on the same team, kind of, but then again they re not. You know? One has a way of doing things, and the other one doesn t. It s kind of like I need the other one to get out of the way so I can do my thing the way I do it. I think they ll always conflict and run into each other.”Jefferson and Lynn’s detention at The Pit also left their children Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) to figure out life in the Occupation on their own. Anissa chose to formalize her alternate persona of Blackbird as a hero of the burgeoning Resistance — and establish an underground railroad of sorts for metas trying to escape Freeland — while Jennifer tried her best to be a “normal” teenager.According to Nafessa Williams, Blackbird and Anissa’s earlier hero persona of Thunder represent two sides of the character.“[Blackbird] doesn t have it all together and she doesn t always do the right thing the way Thunder does, but she does it her way because she thinks it s the right way and she thinks it s what Freeland needs right now.”The impulsiveness of Blackbird may cause problems down the line – particularly with the Perdi in South Freeland – but Williams sees the alter-ego as part of Anissa coming into her own.“She s really seeing herself as an adult and realizing that she runs her life,” Williams said. Nevertheless, expect some mistakes as Anissa finds her way to adulthood. But one aspect of Anissa’s life that will be on firmer ground during the Occupation is her relationship with shapeshifter Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy) – a romance teased since the early episodes of the show, but finally a real thing in season 3.“I think Anissa is really happy to have found someone who understands her,” Williams said of the relationship. “She hasn t told anyone really who she is other than her family, so to be able to open up and trust someone else and let them in on who she really is and understand them for who they are, I think it s a match.”And, as it happens, Grace has also proved her abilities will aid Anissa in getting out of tight scrapes, like Odell’s ill-timed visit in last week’s episode.Jennifer, meanwhile, has acclimated to curfews, traffic stops, and the ASA’s stated mission a little too well. Bizarrely, the confines of the Occupation gave Jennifer an added sense of independence – something Odell hopes to utilize for his own ends.“He s counting on being able to take her humanity and use it,” McClain said. The shadowy agent has already helped her discover new powers which may indicate she is stronger than her father. Also, “[Odell’s] telling her, ‘Your father s wrong here, your father s methods aren t working. You know what I m saying? They haven t worked for years.’”Those sorts of poisonous words could lead to a confrontation between Jennifer and Jefferson before too long.McClain also teased Lynn’s preoccupation with work at The Pit will beco

(Photo by Touchstone Pictures)Back in 1982, when he was still working in Walt Disney s animation studio, director Tim Burton penned a poem called The Nightmare Before Christmas, tapping into his lifelong fascination with the spirit of both Halloween and Christmas. But it wasn t until 1993 that he got to see his passion project reach the big screen, with the help of fellow animator Henry Selick and frequent musical collaborator Danny Elfman. What emerged was a stop-motion animated holiday classic but which holiday does it celebrate, exactly?Splitting its time between the setting of Halloween Town and Christmas Town, with a narrative that finds a spooky skeletal hero kidnapping Santa Claus with the intent of taking his place, The Nightmare Before Christmas has been embraced just as much in the month of October as it has in December, leaving some fans to wonder exactly which of its two holidays the movie represents more. With that in mind, we present two arguments below one explaining why it s a Christmas movie and one in favor of Halloween and leave the final decision up to you. Read on to see what our passionate RT staffers had to say, and then cast your vote in the poll below! It s a Christmas Movie(Photo by Touchstone Pictures)This shouldn t even be a debate. It might be true that Jack Skellington, the so-called Pumpkin King and central hero of the story, is literally a walking skeleton who hails from a place called Halloween Town, and that the narrative primarily focuses on him and the other misguided citizens of Halloween Town, but their entire journey is centered on Christmas. When Jack first stumbles into Christmas Town, he is so awestruck by the majesty of Christmas, so inpired by the glorious joy he witnesses, that he desperately wants to recreate it. In other words, he is essentially infected by Christmas spirit, which he can barely contain, and immediately returns to Halloween Town to spread holiday cheer and share what he s witnessed. He decides he s going to take over Christmas himself, and while his impulses are wildly inappropriate and fairly lump-of-coal-worthy, he actually assembles a team of reindeer (albeit reindeer skeletons), slaps on a red suit and fake beard, and flies around the world delivering presents! Are his gifts horrific and disturbing? Oh yes, very much so. But that also plays into Christmas themes, as Jack acknowledges the gargantuan mess he s created and returns to Halloween Town with a renewed sense of appreciation for his home. How many Christmas movies have hinged on the character transformation of someone who was self-obsessed witnessing the rotten fruits of their toxic ambition and coming to terms with their own faults? To top it all off, Santa pulls a little last-minute flyby and blesses Halloween Town with its first winter snow, as if to say, I know you guys are all about spooky shenanigans, but you know what? Merry Christmas. Case closed. It s a Halloween Movie(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie. Sure, there are Christmas elements, and maybe a large portion of the film is dedicated to Jack Skellington literally trying to scientifically discover the meaning of Christmas, but the protagonist s’ name is also literally Jack Skellington. It primarily takes place in Halloween Town, not Christmas Town, and the dominant aesthetic is appropriately creepy. There’s a zombie child with his eyes sewn shut, for goodness sake. That’s not very Christmas-y.Thematically it’s more Halloween than Christmas. While Christmas is a great opportunity to feel weird about yourself in family situations and learn the spirit of giving or whatever, Halloween is a holiday about acceptance. It’s about accepting death and celebrating life, while being open to the idea that there’s more beyond this mortal coil. It’s also about wearing costumes to be someone else for a night, and while that might sound like the opposite of self-acceptance, costumes are often a reflection of the wearer and can teach you things about yourself. Who wears a costume of something they hate? Almost no one.Jack puts on the Santa suit (his costume) because he doesn’t want to be the Pumpkin King anymore; he wants to be something else. When his attempts to bring Christmas to the masses turn out to be horribly misguided, Jack musically soliloquies in a graveyard before realizing that he is exactly the person he is meant to be and that the coldness in his bones can’t be warmed by trying to be someone else. Being Santa for a night teaches Jack the virtues of being himself, like the year you wore heels as a part of your costume and realized how great your everyday decision to wear flats truly was.Christmas has enough films. Horror movies aren’t suitable for younger audiences, and aside from Charlie Brown and Casper, there aren t a lot of Halloween movie options for kids. As director Henry Selick said at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival a few years ago, It s a Halloween movie.

亚博游戏网址 Little Fires Everywhere: Season 1 (2020) 79% (Hulu)Aside from the star power involved – Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Joshua Jackson, and Rosemary DeWitt are just some of the names in the cast – what makes Little Fires Everywhere a compelling watch is the whodunit factor. The season opens with a scene revealing the climactic ending, leaving you to try and determine just how the characters and their choices throughout the ensuing eight episodes got us there. Based on Celeste Ng’s popular 2017 novel by the same name, the show also contends with the same tough topics tackled in the book, like class warfare and race relations. And while it slaps you in the face with metaphors at times, the show is addictive, and manages to stray just enough from the book’s original ending to satisfy and surprise casual watchers as well as Ng s fans. – Kyle Moss, ProducerWhere to Watch: HuluCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (eight-episode limited series)Review 95% (Comedy Central)It seems as though our social distancing isn t going to end any time soon, but thanks to Review there s a way to experience a variety of real-life situations from the comfort of your own home. On this show, viewers call in and wonder what it s like to do and feel many different things; Andy Daly commits to each task and then helpfully rates them at the end of each segment. Miss driving your car? Let him experience Road Rage for you so you don t have to anymore (1.5 stars out of 5). Is there a long-simmering feud in the back of your mind? Revenge gets a 5 out of 5. So if you re ruminating about all you re missing out on, to quote the opening theme: Life. It s literally all we have.  But is it any good? . Now you know. (FYI Revenge was later downgraded to a 1 out of 5). – Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorWhere to watch: Amazon, Vudu, iTunesCommitment: 8 hours (three seasons)The Plot Against America: Season 1 (2020) 87% (HBO)I know a lot of people who watched the first episode of HBO s The Plot Against America and abandoned ship because, well, there wasn t much of a plot. In this day of content saturation, it s expected that a new series or miniseries will grab you with something big and gobsmacking in its opening eps or you ll just move on to the next thing, and the first few eps of The Plot Against America were mostly about families sitting around talking politics. My advice now that all six episodes are available to stream on HBO: Go back and stick with it through the end; it s a slow burn but when it gets to its back half, The Plot Against America is one of the most powerful things HBO has put out in years. Like the Philip Roth novel on which it s based — which tells the dual tales of aviator Charles Lindbergh s fictionalized rise to the presidency and embrace of the German Nazi party, and how that impacts the lives of a New Jersey Jewish family — the series is complex and meticulously laid out, its deliberate pace matching the slow and insidious rise of anti-Semitism in its version of America. Winona Ryder and Zoe Kazan give standout performances as two sisters with very different views on the direction the country is taking, but the series belongs to the kids, especially to Azhy Robertson as the family s youngest son, and his friend and neighbor Seldon, played by Jacob Laval. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: HBOCommitment: 6 hours (six-part limited series)Making the Cut: Season 1 (2020) 67% (Amazon Prime)After 16 years on the widely successful series, Project Runway, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn walked away. Looking for a fresh start, the duo created their own fashion competition show, partnered with Amazon Studios, and have a new catch phrase, Making the Cut. While the conceit of finding a new designer from a batch of unknowns is the same, the show is definitely a fresh take on the genre. The emphasis this time is not only on talent, but on identifying each designers’ brand and ability to create a business that will attract customers. Each week, the designers are tasked with timed, thematic challenges and must produce two looks: a “runway look” and an “accessible look, and the winning “accessible look” is available each week for purchase on the Making the Cut Amazon store. Currently all winning looks (to date) are sold out! The production quality is amazing, as they travel to Paris and Tokyo for design inspiration. Also contributing is judge Naomi Campbell, who is basically the Simon Cowell of the group. She’s blunt, honest, but also helpful. – Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of Production Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video (and here is a link to the store)Commitment: Approx. 10 hours (across 10 episodes; season finale is April 24)Rake 100% (ABC Australia/Netflix)(Photo by ©Acorn TV/Australian Broadcasting Corp. / Courtesy: Everett Collection)If you’re looking for something off the beaten track, then Australia’s Rake is a perfect binge for you. Richard Roxburgh plays Cleaver Greene, a sharp-as-a-tack criminal defense barrister whose self-destructive streak often threatens to derail is personal and professional lives. Cleaver is a rake, yes, but one that we love: each episode a little bit of goodness peeks through as he defends the kind of alleged criminals most would reject while also trying to repair relationships with those he truly loves. The cinematography is nothing to write home about, but the storytelling and dialogue are magnificent, and Roxburgh is electric in the role. The comedy and tragedy of Cleaver Greene is downright Shakespearian at times, and good luck if you think you can watch only one episode in a sitting. – Lucy Bruckner, ProducerWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 40 hours (40 episodes across five seasons)Merlin 85% (BBC)(Photo by Nick Briggs/©BBC America/courtesy Everett Collection)In these strange times, a nostalgia binge can sometimes soothe the savage beast. Have a whole family of little savages? Merlin offers wholesome escapism, and its availability on Netflix makes it a convenient option to entertain families with five seasons worth of jaunty adventure. Some material may be too scary for the youngest of the family, but the fantastical bromance about warlock Merlin (Colin Morgan) and Camelot’s Prince Arthur (Bradley James) as young men battling monsters, fighting for justice, and looking for love holds a universal appeal. Angel Coulby appears as Gwen, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Anthony Head as Uther, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt voices Kilgharrah the Dragon. The series also features a who’s-who of international talent as secondary and guest stars, including Asa Butterfield, Santiago Cabrera, MacKenzie Crook, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Warwick Davis, Tom Ellis, and on. Tune in with your preteens and teens to make the day’s headlines magically disappear. – Debbie Day, Sr. TV EditorWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 47 hours (across five seasons)The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (Netflix)Wholesome. Silly. Light on drama. Heavy on fun. Based on a Shonen Jump manga series, the series centers on  Saiki Kusuo, a high school student who was born with a seemingly unlimited number of supernatural powers. After learning as a child that using his abilities in public only causes him trouble, he distances himself from his classmates, and resolves to never again use his abilities in front of people — other than his wacky, eccentric parents. But his aloof personality and inadvertent talent for nearly everything make him a magnet for friendship and romance — attention the all-powerful loner wants to avoid! Saiki soon learns that not even the strongest of superpowers can thwart the perils of high school. Paced like a series of comic strips, this show is full of absurd plot lines that will crack you up, and characters so charmingly silly, you can’t help but love them. – Tyler Lorenz, Media CoordinatorWhere to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 20 hours (across 50 episodes)Note: The above trailer is for Saiki s sequel series, Reawakened. Dead Set: Miniseries (2008) 92% (E4/Netflix)(Photo by © Zeppotron / Courtesy: Everett Collection)Before he created Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker gifted us with this horror flick/reality TV mashup that stems from a brilliantly simple premise: What would happen to the people in the Big Brother house if a zombie apocalypse broke out on the outside? The metaphor that plays out in the series can feel a tad overdone — the folks watching reality TV, and the folks featured in it, are just like zombies! — but it s smartly written, frequently hilarious, and often very, very scary. The performances are all great, too; look out for a young Riz Ahmed in one of his earliest TV roles. Interestingly, I was reminded to rewatch the series after hearing Brooker on the Scriptnotes podcast; in an episode devoted to how writers were handling the current pandemic, Brooker noted the similarities between the setup for Dead Set and news reports in March about the German cast of Big Brother being told of the unfolding Coronavirus pandemic out in the real world. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: Netflix,Commitment: Approx. 2.5 hours (across 5 episodes)Check out our regular April Binge Guide. Thumbnail image: Nick Briggs/©BBC America, © Zeppotron, Michele K.
