The renowned martial arts director and fight choreographer has orchestrated some of the most memorable and thrilling action sequences in all of cinema, working with people like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, and Donnie Yen. Some of his films, like Iron Monkey, Wing Chun, and the original Drunken Master, are widely celebrated classics of the genre, which has benefited from his talents for nearly half a century. This week, Yuen releases his latest directorial effort, a spinoff of the popular Ip Man franchise called Master Z: Ip Man Legacy. The film focuses on a martial arts master in 1960s Hong Kong who loses a duel with Ip Man and decides to retire, only to be drawn back into fighting by a local drug dealer. Normally, we would ask Yuen what his Five Favorite Films were, but with such an extensive list of credits, we thought we d do something a little more interesting. With that in mind, read on for Yuen Woo-ping s five favorite fight scenes that he himself directed.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is officially Certified Fresh! Ahead of the film s release, stars Shameik Moore and Jake Johnson stopped by Rotten Tomatoes for an extended chat with RT Senior Editor Grae Drake. They talked about how happy they were with the overwhelmingly positive response the film has gotten so far, what representation in a movie like this means, why recording scenes together was key, and why Stan Lee s ideas were so revolutionary. Plus, they muse about a Spider-Man Noir spinoff and talk about Johnson s burning desire to fly to Vegas to record with Nic Cage. Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for Zac Efron, Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, and Denzel Washington. This WEEK S TOP STORYANGELINA JOLIE IN TALKS TO LEAD MARVEL S THE ETERNALS(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)It s been a few weeks shy of a year now since we first heard that Marvel Studios was developing a movie based on The Eternals. Since then, it s been confirmed that The Eternals will be the next film to start production after Black Widow, likely for a late 2020 release (November 6, 2020, specifically). Despite that, one could argue that the project hadn t really been receiving much press or buzz, and the reason for that is sort of obvious: most non-comics fans don t know what The Eternals is (Thanos is an Eternal from Titan, but there are different groups of Eternals). What The Eternals needed and was lacking until this week, then, was some genuine star power to raise the film s profile. Marvel is getting it in the form of Angelina Jolie, who s now in talks to star in The Eternals. Technically, Jolie s role was not confirmed this week, but the leads are reportedly Ikaris (who s male) and Sersi, so she s probably Sersi. This might also mean Jolie could join a future version of The Avengers, as Sersi was a member of the team for over 60 issues from 1989 to 1994. The Eternals will be directed by Chloé Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me) when it starts filming this summer. In the meantime, you can check out this fan art that speculates what Angelina Jolie could look like as Sersi.Fresh Developments1. JOEL COEN GOING SOLO FOR SHAKESPEARE S MACBETH STARRING DENZEL WASHINGTON (Photo by Wilson Webb/Focus Features)Director Joel Coen and his brother Ethan have collaborated on so many movies (dozens) that it s become shorthand to just refer to them as the Coen Brothers, even if their precise duties on each film vary. This week, we learned of the first film that Joel Coen will be directing from his own screenplay, without Ethan writing or producing, and it will be an adaptation of William Shakespeare s MacBeth (A.K.A. The Scottish Play for the superstitious). Denzel Washington will play the title character, and two-time Academy Award winner Frances McDormand (A.K.A. Mrs. Joel Coen) will co-star as Lady MacBeth. It is not yet known if the film will retain the play s medieval Scotland setting or perhaps shift to a more contemporary setting. This MacBeth also comes just a few years after the 2015 adaptation (Certified Fresh at 79%) that starred Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.2. NEW AVENGERS: ENDGAME POSTERS CONFIRM FATES OF SHURI, VALKYRIE, AND OTHERS(Photo by Marvel Studios)There was a lot going on in those final moments of Avengers: Infinity War, but Marvel wasn t able to fit in every character. It s also telling of the scope of these movies now that Marvel Studios was able to release 32 character posters for Avengers: Endgame, and still leave out several fan favorites. The posters were divided into two groups (16 of each): black-and-white posters for (some of) the characters who were dusted (or ashed ) in Avengers: Infinity War, and color posters for characters who survived Thanos snap. The inclusion of a poster for Tessa Thompson s Valkyrie character from Thor: Ragnarok confirms one of the lingering questions some had, since she wasn t seen on the Asgardian spaceship in Avengers: Infinity War (or at all). Likewise, there s also a black-and-white poster for Letitia Wright s Shuri character from Black Panther, confirming that she shared the fate of her brother T Challa (not that he s likely to be gone permanently). Marvel Studios also confirmed this week that Avengers: Endgame will be around three hours long when it s released on April 26.3. CUMBERBATCH, FIRTH, AND STRONG JOIN SAM MENDES  WORLD WAR I DRAMA(Photo by JA, Priscilla Grant, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)We ve known for a while that Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) was planning on directing a drama called 1917 following his decision not to direct another James Bond film after 2015 s Spectre. Details about 1917 have remained sparse, but the title itself makes it pretty clear that it s set during World War I (1917 was the year the United States joined the war, but the focus will be on the British). We now know that the story will center on a single day in the war for two young British soldiers played by George MacKay (Captain Fantastic) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen from Game of Thrones). With filming of 1917 starting on location in England and Scotland on Monday, several more actors were confirmed this week. The cast will include Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, TV s Sherlock), Colin Firth (The King s Speech), Richard Madden (Robb Stark from Game of Thrones), and Mark Strong (Shazam!). There are a few reunions going on here, including for Kingsman: The Secret Service (Colin Firth and Mark Strong), and The Imitation Game (Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Strong), and Game of Thrones.4. MICHAEL B. JORDAN WON T LOOK A DAY OVER 400 AS METHUSELAH(Photo by Marvel Studios)It was less than three years ago that we first heard about a biblical epic called Methuselah, in which Tom Cruise would play the long-lived figure from the Book of Genesis. The film is still in development at Warner Bros, but it s now set up as a starring vehicle for Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther), who will also produce. One significant change to Methuselah is that it s no longer described as a biblical epic, but is instead about a 400-year-old man who, over hundreds of years, has accumulated vast intellectual knowledge, from multiple languages to the sciences, as well as survival skills. Methuselah joins Jordan and his production company s sizable slate of film projects along with Just Mercy (1/17/2020), Tom Clancy s Without Remorse (9/18/2020), Journal for Jordan, The Liberators, Red Wolf, Silver Bear, and Wrong Answer.5. TOM HANKS JOINS ELVIS PRESLEY BIOPIC AS COLONEL TOM PARKER (Photo by Sony Pictures)Tom Hanks is on some sort of crazy streak of late playing iconic real-life figures of both the 20th and 21st centuries. In the last six years alone, he’s starred in Captain Phillips, Saving Mr. Banks (as Walt Disney), Bridge of Spies, Sully (as pilot “Sully” Sullenberger), The Post (as Ben Bradlee), and his Mister Rogers movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is due out later this year (11/22/2019). Hanks is now in talks for another film in which he will play a 20th century pop culture personality; if the deal goes through, he ll take on a Southern accent again as Colonel Tom Parker, co-starring in the untitled Elvis Presley biopic that director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Australia) has been developing for several years. Luhrmann reportedly moved on to Tom Hanks after previous talks with Leonardo DiCaprio (his Romeo + Juliet star) didn t work out. Baz Luhrmann has not yet cast his actor to star as Elvis Presley.

Diamantino (2018) is a sci-fi tinged drama that follows a disgraced former soccer star on the hunt for a new purpose – confronting, along the way, neo-fascism, the refugee crisis, genetic modification, and abuse at the hands of his evil twin sisters. It is Certified Fresh at 87%. Avengement (2019) is, as suggested by the title, a film that follows a criminal on furlough from prison who uses his time on the outside to take down those who made him a cold-blooded killer. It is Fresh with a 100% Tomatometer. Echo in the Canyon (2018) is a music documentary that looks at influential artists like The Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Mamas and the Papas and others who were part of the Laurel Canyon scene of the mid- 60s and contributed to what would be known as the California Sound. It is Fresh with a 100% Tomatometer. Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation (2019) is another music doc set around the turbulent 60s, and includes never-before-seen footage of the concert that would define a generation. It is Fresh with a 100% Tomatometer. Funny Story (2018) is described as a tragi-comedy and follows an aging heartthrob who attempts to reconnect with his grown daughter – by hitching a ride with her friend and crashing her vacation in Big Sur. It has an 89% Tomatometer score. Halston (2019) is a documentary that looks at influential 1970s fashion designer Halston. Frédéric Tcheng, who also did films about Diana Vreeland and Valentino, writes and directs. It is Fresh with an 80% Tomatometer.

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Fast and Furious, Static Shock, and Battlestar Galactica. This WEEK S TOP STORYFAST AND FURIOUS FRANCHISE TO END AFTER THREE MORE MOVIES (Photo by Universal/Everett Collection)In the original gameplan, F9 was to have been released back on May 22, 2020 and Fast Furious 10 would ve been coming out next summer, probably in the 5/28/2021 spot where F9 is now scheduled. Universal Pictures confirmed this week that the main Fast and the Furious franchise will wrap up with F11. F9 director Justin Lin will also return to direct F10 and F11, with the expectation of bring back Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Ludacris Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang. (Sorry, Gal Gadot fans.) It s also worth noting that this is just the core franchise we re talking about here, as plans for a Hobbs Shaw sequel starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are still in development.Other Top Headlines1. MICHAEL B. JORDAN PRODUCING DC COMICS SUPERHERO MOVIE STATIC SHOCK(Photo by Warner Bros. Animation/Everett Collection)Warner Bros announced at their DC Fandome virtual event in August that there were plans for a feature film adaptation of Static Shock, which was sort of their flagship title in the 1990s for their Milestone Media division before also being adapted in the early 2000s as a Kids WB animated series. This week, the Static Shock movie received a high profile partner in Michael B. Jordan, who joins the project as producer through his Outlier Society production company. 2. CANADIAN NEWCOMER LANDS TIGER LILY ROLE IN PETER PAN WENDY  (Photo by Disney/Everett Collection)When Warner Bros and director Joe Wright made Pan in 2015, one of the movie s biggest controversies revolved around the decision to cast Rooney Mara as the Native American princess Tiger Lily. (Mara later expressed regret over taking the job. For their own live-action adaptation of Peter Pan, called Peter Pan Wendy, Walt Disney Pictures is avoiding that sort of PR disaster by casting Canadian newcomer Alyssa Wapanatâhk, who is of Cree heritage,  as Tiger Lily. The role has also reportedly been reimagined from how author and playwright J.M. Barrie originally depicted the character. Wapanatâhk is joining a live action cast which already includes Jude Law as Captain Hook, Yara Shahidi (black-ish) as Tinker Bell, and two other relative newcomers: Alexander Molony as Peter, and Ever Anderson as Wendy. 3. WENDELL PIERCE TO TAKE CENTER STAGE IN B.B. KING BIOPIC(Photo by Paramount/Everett Collection)Trends come and go in Hollywood, but one that is definitely surging right now is the musician biopic, partly because of the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman. Biopics in the pipeline as of this week include Respect (Aretha Franklin), Elvis (Presley), I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Whitney Houston), and untitled projects about Madonna and Sammy Davis, Jr. To this list, we can add famed blues guitarist B.B. King (1925-2015), as actor Wendell Pierce revealed online this week that he will star as King in a biopic called The Thrill Is On. Pierce is perhaps best known for his role as Bunk Moreland on HBO s The Wire. On Twitter, Pierce noted that he will honor [King] and his creative genius. No director for The Thrill is Gone has been announced yet.  4. REESE WITHERSPOON CASTS HER ADAPTATION OF BESTSELLER WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING(Photo by Hulu/Everett Collection)Debut novelist Delia Owens had a huge surprise best selling hit in 2019 with the novel Where the Crawdads Sing, about a young mid-centur girl growing up alone in the marshlands of rural North Carolina who finds herself the focus of a scandal. Reese Witherspoon s Hello Sunshine production company partnered with Sony Pictures earlier this year to produce a Where the Crawdads Sing movie, and this week the lead role has gone to  22-year-old British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones. She has mostly worked in English and Irish film and TV projects like Cold Feet and Normal People. The Crawdads adaptation will be directed by Olivia Newman (First Match) from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar (Troop Zero).5. THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD MIGHT VE JUST GOTTEN A LOT LONGER FOR WICKED(Photo by Everett Collection)The Broadway musical adaptation of the novel Wicked debuted seventeen years ago, and Universal Pictures has been developing a movie version since 2012 (including a period in which the film was scheduled for release in the December 2019 spot that eventually went to Cats). The production plans that would ve led to that 2019 release were eventually scrapped, and Universal rescheduled Wicked instead for two years later on December 22, 2021. The Wicked movie now hits another serious bump on the Yellow Brick Road as director Stephen Daldry has left the production. Although Universal is now faced with replacing Daldry during the COVID-19 pandemic, his departure was reportedly over scheduling, with Universal wanting Wicked sooner than Daldry was comfortable moving (and also due to a lack of stage space in London where Daldry wanted to film). Universal reportedly hopes to start filming Wicked with a new director by late 2021. There is currently no new release date, but Universal s pattern for Wicked seems to suggest it will be a December in whatever year they eventually choose, which now looks like 2022 or 2023. According to Deadline, possible Wicked directors could include J.J. Abrams, James Mangold, Rob Marshall, Ryan Murphy, and Steven Spielberg.6. LONG-TIME X-MEN PRODUCER TAKING THE HELM ON BATTLESTAR GALACTICA REBOOT  (Photo by Unviersal Television/Everett Collection)An entire book could be written about the many twists and turns that the Battlestar Galactica franchise has taken since showrunner Glen A. Larson came up with the idea as Adam s Ark in the 1960s. In addition to the original 1978-1979 TV show, there was also a 1978 re-edit movie version released in theaters using Sensurround, the Galactica 1980 spinoff series, the critically acclaimed 2004-2009 reboot series, and various other attempts at a reboot movie, including projects from original series star Richard Hatch and X-Men director Bryan Singer. As it turns out, Universal s plans for more Battlestar Galactica may indeed involve one of the people behind the X-Men movies: Simon Kinberg (franchise writer and Dark Phoenix director), who has signed to write and produce the BS reboot movie. A separate reboot TV show is also in development.7. HARRISON FORD AND ED HELMS TO COSTAR IN BURT SQUIRE SHIPWRECK COMEDY  (Photo by Disney/Everett Collection)The COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything about the movie business, including production, but people are finding workarounds. A frequent approach appears to be filming outside the United States, especially in remote places where crews can more easily be quarantined and self-contained. The Isle of Man is a relatively small (221 square miles) bit of land in the Irish Sea, and it s where a new comedy will soon be filmed. Harrison Ford and Ed Helms are signed to star in the shipwreck comedy The Miserable Adventures of Burt Squire Aboard the Horn High Yo, reportedly based on a true story about a man (Helms) in the midst of a midlife crisis who embarks on what he hopes would be a dream sailing vacation, but ends up shipwrecked in the Atlantic Ocean with a charming but unhinged sea captain. That would be Ford s character. STX Films hasn t announced a director yet.8. DIRECTOR OF NETFLIX S REBECCA SETTING SAIL FOR GIANT SHARK SEQUEL THE MEG 2(Photo by WB/Everett Collection)Some directors stay consistently within their own niche film to film, but others will occasionally go in a completely surprising direction. For example, British director Ben Wheatley has delivered within a modest range of thrillers or suspenseful dramas, including Netflix s recent remake of Rebecca. A movie that would not seem 100% obvious for Wheatley to direct next would be the sequel to the 2018 giant shark action movie The Meg. Now Wheatley has signed on for exactly that. Jason Statham starred in the first film, and is expected to return.9. POWER RANGERS TO BE REBOOTED (AGAIN) WITH A SHARED TV/FILM CINEMATIC UNIVERSE(Photo by Lionsgate/Everett Collection)It was just three years ago that Lionsgate released their ambitious Power Rangers reboot, which earned just 2 million worldwide from a budget of over 5 million. One might argue that the low box office was a sign that the moviegoing audience, but Paramount Pictures (taking over from Lionsgate) is moving forward with plans for a new Power Rangers cinematic universe with stories set both in feature films and new TV shows. Paramount, eOne, and Hasbro have enlisted Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World, I Am Not Okay With This) to shepherd all of the potential Power Rangers projects in both film and TV. None of the actors and actresses in the recent 2017 reboot (including Elizabeth Banks) are expected to be involved with Paramount s projects. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for stars like Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, and Tiffany Haddish. This WEEK S TOP STORYRYAN GOSLING TO STAR IN DAVID LEITCH ACTION FILM(Photo by Richard Foreman Jr/©FilmDistrict)About seven years ago, the news broke that Dwayne Johnson was in talks to star in an adaptation of the 1980s action TV show The Fall Guy, which featured Lee Majors as a luckless stuntman who investigated crimes on the side (a formula that dominated TV of that era). That project never happened, and it appears to have fallen deeply out of development, but the premise of a movie about a stuntman is still relevant (and indeed, it s what half of last year s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was about). This week, after a heated auction, Universal Pictures has landed the rights to an untitled Hollywood stuntman action drama project that has Ryan Gosling attached to star for director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw). Leitch is himself a former stuntman and stunt coordinator, and Ryan Gosling has already played a stuntman in two previous films (Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines). In their coverage of the deal, The Hollywood Reporter leans heavily into comparisons to The Fall Guy and Hollywood s long interest in a Fall Guy movie, but at this point, there seems to be no confirmation that the movie actually is an adaptation of that TV show. Other studios that bid against Universal Pictures included MGM, Paramount, and Netflix.Other Top Headlines1. BOTH BLACK WIDOW AND WEST SIDE STORY NOW DELAYED UNTIL 2021 (Photo by Marvel Studios)There are still some major movies scheduled for theatrical releases in the next few months (including No Time to Die, Pixar s Soul, Dune, and Wonder Woman 1984), but this week, Walt Disney Pictures made big changes regarding several of their upcoming films, delaying more of their most anticipated titles. Marvel Studios first return to the MCU post Avengers: Endgame will be the prequel Black Widow, which is now scheduled for May 7, 2021 after originally being dated for May 1, 2020 and then more recently, November 6, 2020. This shift means that other Marvel movies are also being bumped back, starting with Eternals (now 11/5/2021) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (now 7/9/2021). Disney also pushed back Steven Spielberg s remake of West Side Story almost a full year from December 18, 2020 to December 10, 2021. In an interesting turn of events, that means that Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights (6/18/2021) is effectively opening before West Side Story again after it was rescheduled from its original June 26, 2020 release date earlier this year. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to impact the movie release calendar, and these changes likely won t be the last, so stay tuned for more updates.2. WONG KAR-WAI NOW WORKING ON SEQUEL TO 1994 CLASSIC CHUNGKING EXPRESS (Photo by Everett Collection)When Bong Joon-ho won big at this year s Academy Awards for Parasite, including Best Picture, it shed some light on other acclaimed international filmmakers who in the past mostly had to settle for the Foreign Film category. One such director who has shockingly never been nominated for an Academy Award is Wong Kar-wai, whose filmography includes Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, and the 1996 arthouse hit Chungking Express (Certified Fresh at 87%). That film might seem like an odd choice to receive a sequel some 26+ years later, but according to Chinese authorities, that s apparently exactly what Wong Kar-wai has planned, as he has submitted a screenplay called Chungking Express 2020 that the Chinese government has approved to move into production. The plot summary offered in the filing is curious, as it first recounts the story of Chungking Express, which followed two separate stories involving police officers, and then describes a new scenario that takes place in the future: In 2036, young Xiao Qian and May are unwilling to be held back by genetic partnerings, and insist on finding their own destiny.' It remains unclear if the new film will revisit the two stories of the first movie in some way.3. TIFFANY HADDISH JOINS NICOLAS CAGE META-COMEDY(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Production will soon begin on the Lionsgate action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Nicolas Cage will play a fictionalized version of himself. The premise of the movie follows Cage as he accepts a million-dollar offer from a wealthy super-fan (played by Pedro Pascal) that leads to Cage being forced to re-enact some of his most popular classic movie scenes. This week, we found out who will be joining Pascal as another fictional character, as Tiffany Haddish has signed on to co-star in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as an eccentric rogue government agent who forces superstar Nicolas Cage to go undercover in a crazy, off-book, last-ditch effort to bring one of the largest criminal organizations in Europe down for good. It s unclear if this undercover assignment is part of the main storyline involving Pedro Pascal s character, or perhaps a b-story elsewhere in the movie (but it s probably the former).4. RON HOWARD TO DIRECT BIOPIC ABOUT CHINESE PIANIST SUPERSTAR LANG LANG (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Universal Pictures)Chinese pianist Lang Lang is only 38 years old, but he has already received an international reception more typical of a classical musician twice his age. He s also apparently impressed many within Hollywood s upper echelons, because Ron Howard has signed on to direct an untitled Lang Lang biopic to be based on his memoir, Journey of a Thousand Miles. The planned biopic will depict Lang s journey from a childhood in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang to fame both in China and across the entire world. It s not yet known if Howard or his producing partners plan on casting Lang to play himself. In a statement about the film s announcement, Lang Lang said, Dream big, work hard, and always believe in yourself. This movie, thanks to Ron Howard’s vision, will inspire young people around the world to follow their dreams and never forget they are one in a million. 5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE X TRIP OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Hollywood may move at its own languid pace, but it s nothing compared to the last few decades of manned space exploration, which seems to have drastically slowed down following the amazing speed at which it developed in the 1960s and 1970s. One of the most surprising movie announcements of 2020 thus far came in May when Tom Cruise announced his plans to become the first movie star to actually film scenes for a major Hollywood production in outer space himself. This project got one step closer to actually happening this week as the official Twitter account for Space Shuttle Almanac formally added Tom Cruise s outer space project to their list of planned missions. Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria will pilot a Space X Crew Dragon Axiom Tourist FLight in October, 2021 with Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman (American Made, Edge of Tomorrow) aboard, presumably with at least one other crew member to aid in whatever they have planned to film in space. There is no release date (or title) for Tom Cruise s space movie yet, but given the late 2021 filming, we can probably expect it sometime in 2022 or perhaps 2023.6. EVA LONGORIA IS READY (TO DIRECT) A NICE LONG SPA DAY(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After her long run on the hit ABC dramedy series Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria has increasingly turned her attention towards a new career as producer and director, including several TV shows and plans for the Flamin Hot Cheetos movie (seriously). That film could eventually become Longoria s directorial debut feature, but with pandemic delays wreaking havoc on production schedules, it s anyone s guess when that movie will even be released. In the meantime, Longoria added another movie to her possible future filmography this week, signing on with Sony Pictures to star in, produce, and direct a female ensemble action comedy called Spa Day. The premise is being kept secret for now, but it s pretty easy to imagine what it will be like based on just the title, the genres, and the star and director. We ve all seen movies.7. LONG-RUNNING SONY VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE YAKUZA GETTING ITS OWN MOVIE(Photo by Sega)This story is ostensibly about the long-running Yazuka video game franchise, but let s start by remembering another similar video game. Shenmue was a 1999 game for the Sega Dreamcast set in the world of 1980s Japanese crime gangs (and martial arts), but the reason it s particularly relevant here is that, in 2001, the cut scenes for the game were packaged together as Shenmue: The Movie. Fast forward twenty years, and it s easy to argue that many video games could be adapted as movies that way (it would probably be a lot cheaper too). The Yakuza games also published by Sega are increasingly cinematic in that way, but this week s news of plans for a Yakuza movie describe the film as live action.  Yakuza is Sega s second best-selling franchise after Sonic the Hedgehog, who made his super speed jump to the movies earlier this year, so it makes sense that the game publisher is now turning its attention towards getting a Yakuza movie produced as well. Variety describes the first Yakuza game this way: Kazuma Kiryu [is] released from a 10-year prison sentence after taking the fall for the murder of his family’s patriarch, [and as] the entire Japanese underworld is pulled into the search for 0 million stolen from the vault of his former clan, Kiryu is forced back into the lawless world of the Yakuza. 8. UNIVERSAL TO TRY OUT FANCY NEW TECHNOLOGY WITH ICE CUBE SCI-FI MOVIE (Photo by Bob Mahoney/©Warner Bros.)The old school studio system of classic Hollywood may have gone away decades ago, but we do still see today movie stars who have strong relationships with specific studios. Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube, for example, starred in Universal s Ride Along (Rotten at 18%) and its sequel (Rotten at 13%), as well as the upcoming Flint Strong boxing biopic. Ice Cube is now signed to reunite with Universal Pictures on an untitled grounded science fiction project to be directed by frequent music video director Rich Lee. The premise hasn t been revealed yet, except that it was compared to District 9, and the focus right now appears to be on the new screen capture technology that producer Timur Bekmambetov is bringing to the project.9. NEXT FATHER OF THE BRIDE REMAKE TO FOCUS ON LATINX FAMILY (Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Every once in a while in Hollywood s history, there will be a remake so beloved that it s actually more famous than the original John Carpenter s The Thing is a frequently cited example of that. Another remake that seems to have gone on to overshadow the legacy of the original movie is 1991 s Father of the Bride (Fresh at 70%), starring Steve Martin, which was actually a remake of the 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. We re getting another reminder of the remake s enduring popularity soon, as Netflix this week released the trailer for a special called Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), which promises to reunite franchise stars like Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. We also learned this week that Warner Bros. has plans for another Father of the Bride remake, this time revolving around a Latinx family as a father deals with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. This new version is also being described as more of a rom-com than previous versions of the film. Screenwriter Matt Lopez, who has previously worked on other remakes like Disney s Race to Witch Mountain (Rotten at 43%) and The Sorcerer s Apprentice (Rotten at 40%) was reportedly influenced by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended. This WEEK S TOP STORYKHALEESI S HAND AND HUSBAND TEAM UP FOR GOOD, BAD UNDEAD(Photo by RCF, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Increasingly, there are a handful of pop culture franchises that together account for the majority of movie stars (the MCU, the DCEU, etc.), and one of those is the cast of HBO s Game of Thrones (especially for British and European actors). Two of the more prominent American stars of Game of Thrones were Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), and this week, they both signed up for the same vampire movie called Good, Bad Undead. Dinklage will star as the latest in the long line of vampire hunters named Van Helsing, and Momoa will play a vampire who has vowed never to kill again. Teaming up, the two run a grift where they travel from town to town and Van Helsing pretends to defeat the vampire. Good, Bad, Undead will be directed by Max Barbakow, who made his feature film debut with the upcoming Andy Samberg comedy Palm Springs (Fresh at 100%).Other Top Headlines1. SONY S OBSCURE MARVEL PLANS INCLUDE JACKPOT AND MADAME WEB (Photo by Bennett Raglin/Getty Images)In case you missed the news, earlier this month, it was confirmed that Sony Pictures is now using the awkward acronym SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) to refer to its different projects based on Marvel Comics characters like Venom, Morbius, etc. It s no MCU, but maybe it ll grow on all of us. SPUMC refers to the hundreds of potential films that Sony retains the feature film rights to, most of which are characters that were first introduced in Spider-Man comic books. In addition to Venom and Morbius, Sony has been developing movies for Silver Sable and Black Cat (that project may now be shelved), Silk, and of course, the animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (10/7/2022). Many of the remaining characters are currently fairly obscure to mainstream audiences, but Sony appears to be betting that the movies are what will make them famous, not the other way around. One has to figure that is why they re confident with their plans for movies about Jackpot and Madame Web. The first story this week involved TV director S.J. Clarkson (Bates Motel, Jessica Jones), who has been hired by Sony to develop a mystery SPUMC project that most sources are saying (without confirmation) is probably Madame Web. In the comics, Madame Web has been the codename of two different Marvel characters, including a former Spider-Woman, but most people seem to think it s the original Madame Web, who was an elderly blind woman gifted with clairvoyance and other psychic abilities. Sony is reportedly eyeing either Charlize Theron or Amy Adams for the role, which either suggests it s the second Madame Web, or perhaps the movie is just de-aging the original Madame Web. The second story this week concerned Jackpot, an even more obscure Marvel superhero. Sony has hired TV showrunner Marc Guggenheim, the man behind most of the CW s Arrowverse shows, to start work on a Jackpot screenplay. The character in the comics has a rather convoluted story (including there being two different Jackpots), so there are many different ways the film could go, whatever Guggenheim wants to do with it/her/them.2. NICHOLAS HOULT REPLACED BY ESAI MORALES AS MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 VILLAIN (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Especially for big action movie franchises like Mission: Impossible, which take several months to film at locations all around the world, schedules matter, as studios need to know that any given actor will actually be available to show up on set. So as COVID-19 has delayed filming, we re going to see a few actors dropping out of roles. Case in point: Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) had been cast as the villain in Mission: Impossible 7, but he has left the project due to scheduling concerns, and he s been replaced by Esai Morales of Netflix s Ozark. At 57, Morales is 27 years older  than Hoult, which also begs the question whether the character is staying the same or if it s being rewritten during the hiatus. Mission: Impossible 7 was originally scheduled for July of next year, but the production delays have led to the film being rescheduled for November 19, 2021 (the week after Fantastic Beasts 3).3. RYAN GOSLING RETURNING TO OUTER SPACE (Photo by Daniel McFadden/©Universal Pictures)Ryan Gosling s most recent studio movie was 2018 s First Man (Certified Fresh at 89%) ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/first_man ), in which he portrayed astronaut Neil Armstrong during the first manned moon landing in 1969. Possibly coincidentally, Gosling is now attached to star in an adaptation of an upcoming (not yet titled) novel by Andy Weir, who also wrote the eponymous astronaut-in-peril novel upon which the 2015 Matt Damon movie The Martian ( Certified Fresh at 91%) was based. This new film will be produced and directed by the team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have previously teamed up on movies like 21 Jump Street (Certified Fresh at 84%) and The LEGO Movie (Certified Fresh at 96%). The novel reportedly has the code name Project Hail Mary and tells the story of a lone astronaut in space who is trying to save the planet.4. STEVEN SODERBERGH SPENT QUARANTINE WRITING A SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Claudette Barius/Fingerprint Releasing/©Amazon)Back in March when most people started their stay-at-home time, a popular meme that went around claimed that William Shakespeare used his own quarantine time during the Black Plague to write King Lear. Although most of us probably just used the extra free time to play video games or binge TV shows, surely some people were actually productive, right? Prolific director, producer, and screenwriter Steven Soderbergh (Ocean s 11, Magic Mike, Logan Lucky) apparently was. In an interview this week, Soderbergh revealed that the first 6 or 7 weeks of the lockdown, I finished 3 screenplays, with one of those three projects being a sequel to sex, lies, and videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%). It was an idea that had been circling for awhile, and I felt like I came up with the way to get back in, and so I wrote it, and I wanna make it. Sex, lies, and videotape was, of course, Soderbergh s feature film debut back in 1989, which was also one of the Sundance Film Festival s earliest crossover hits. It s not yet known if the sequel centers on the same characters originally played by James Spader, Andie MacDowell, and Peter Gallagher, or whether any of those actors will return. (Given how recently Soderbergh apparently came up with the concept and wrote it, it s possible he hasn t even talked to them yet.)5. DAVID ARQUETTE ALSO RETURNING IN SCREAM 5 AS DEPUTY DEWEY(Photo by ©Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)Just two weeks ago, we received our most recent and firmest confirmation that a Scream 5 is actually going to happen soon because Neve Campbell confirmed that she s been approached about returning as Sidney Prescott. Campbell is one third of a core trio of Scream franchise regulars along with David Arquette and Courtney Cox, and this week, Arquette also signed on to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in the new movie. The fifth Scream movie will be directed by the team called Radio Silence, which most recently gave us last summer s Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). Unfortunately, Wes Craven is no longer around to be involved with the project, but original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is now on board as executive producer. You can read more on Everything We Know about Scream 5 right here.6. MINDY KALING TO CO-WRITE REESE WITHERSPOON S LEGALLY BLONDE 3 It feels like a third Legally Blonde has been in development for nearly all of the seventeen years since 2003 s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White Blonde (Rotten at 37%). This week s news suggests that we re going to have to wait a bit longer yet, but it s also positive news for fans in general. Mindy Kaling and TV screenwriter Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks Recreation) have been hired by MGM to write Legally Blonde 3, possibly starting from scratch. Reese Witherspoon will indeed return as lawyer Elle Woods, but no other details are known about the premise (such as, for example, whether Kaling might also co-star). In somewhat related news, original Legally Blonde screenwriters Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith have been hired by Warner Bros. to start work on a remake of their 1979 comedy hit 10 (Fresh at 68%), starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.7. NICK JONAS TO STAR IN COMIC BOOK MOVIE THE BLACKSMITH (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)To his credit, pop star-turned-actor Nick Jonas has arguably been one of the highlights of the two most recent Jumanji movies, and soon he s going to get the opportunity to see if his charisma can carry an entire action movie. Jonas and Laurence Fishburne have both signed on to star in the comic book adaptation The Blacksmith for action director Pierre Morel (Taken, Peppermint, From Paris with Love). Jonas will star in the thriller as a weapons expert for the intelligence community (sort of like Q from the James Bond movies) who has to go on the run when his lab is destroyed and his secret agent coworkers are murdered. Fishburne will play the weapons expert who formerly had the Blacksmith s job, and Jonas will also be joined by a female lead, but that role hasn t yet been cast yet.8. HALLE BERRY JOINING JOSH GAD IN DISASTER MOVIE MOONFALL(Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)With his World War II movie Midway in theaters last November, action and disaster movie director Roland Emmerich has turned his attention towards the disaster movie Moonfall, which is exactly what it sounds like (basically, Armageddon but with the Moon). Last week, Josh Gad became the first cast member to join what will end up being a large ensemble cast, and this week, he was joined by one of the original X-Men, Halle Berry. Berry will reportedly play a former astronaut who is now a NASA administrator, no doubt pacing about in a busy control room as reports of hazard and imminent destruction come down from the crew attempting to put the Moon back in orbit. Lionsgate reportedly hopes to release Moonfall in 2021 following a production start in Montreal in the fall (depending upon COVID-19 delays). For the trivia buffs out there, this year marks the 20th anniversary since the last time a film directed by Roland Emmerich scored a Fresh Tomatometer score, with The Patriot (Fresh at 61%) in 2000.9. DON T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER S DEAD (OR THAT THIS MOVIE IS GETTING REMADE) There is a longstanding argument to be made that the best candidates for movies to be remade are films that were bad the first time around. On the other hand, there is often a reason why a movie receives bad reviews, and sometimes, that reason has to do with the premise itself. In the case of the 1991 family comedy Don t Tell Mom the Babysitter s Dead ( Rotten at 36% ), the title may have also been a big part of the negative reaction, but it was at least memorable. With that in mind, a remake of Don t Tell Mom the Babysitter s Dead is indeed now in development with the twist this time around being that it will feature an African American family (Christina Applegate starred in the original). The remake will be directed by Bille Woodruff, whose filmography includes Honey (Rotten at 21%), Honey 2 (Rotten at 10%), and the Queen Latifah comedy Beauty Shop (Rotten at 38%).

亚博竞彩下载 Two days ago, we learned that a new Ghostbusters movie would be on its way in 2020, and that the man delivering the new movie will be Jason Reitman, director of Juno, Up in the Air, and last year s Tully and The Front Runner. He also happens to be the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. The news came via an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly, which didn t tell us much else about the new film, except that it s expected to take place in the universe of the two original Ghostbusters films a separate timeline, if you will, from the events of the 2016 reboot directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. That was followed by a short teaser the very next day that prominently featured the iconic Ghostbusters vehicle, the Ecto-1, gathering dust under a tarp in a barn, and the internet understandably geeked out.But do we need a follow-up of any sort to the original Ghostbusters movies, or should we let them rest in peace? We think this is another topic worth debating, so we ve gathered two competing viewpoints from RT staffers for you to mull over. Read on for each argument, and then vote in the poll below!Yes, I Ain t Fraid of No Sequels(Photo by Columbia Pictures)First of all, let s just address the elephant in the room and say that the recent Paul Feig Ghostbusters wasn t remotely as bad as the internet would have you believe. That said, it was never going to live up to the original film or, to a degree, even its admittedly less successful sequel if only because of its iconic cast and legacy. It inevitably invited comparisons to those 1980s classics and suffered for it, and if nothing else, it reminded us how much we loved those earlier films. The cast hasn t been announced yet, but this is our (perhaps last) chance to get a proper third movie, albeit without the late Harold Ramis, and we ll happily take it to spend more time with Peter, Ray, Winston, Dana Barrett, and Louis Tully. Hell, we d love to see Annie Potts Janine again, too. On top of all that, the film is being directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan, and not only is he a self-proclaimed lifelong fan of the movies, he himself said that he avoided taking on the project until he had a good enough idea for a story worth telling. When his father read it, he said it was so emotional and funny that it made him cry. Taking all of that into account, a new sequel to the original series sounds like a fantastic idea, and the new teaser has effectively put me in the front seat of the hype train. No, I d Rather Get SlimedLook, I love the original Ghostbusters as much as the next fan, and possibly even more; I watched The Real Ghostbusters cartoon religiously, owned action figures, and when I was nine, I lobbied my parents hard (but unsuccessfully) for a proton pack so I could dress up as one for Halloween. I also wasn t a huge fan of the 2016 Paul Feig reboot, so it would make sense to assume I d be all for a new film set in the universe of the original film. Would I love to see Bill Murray snark it up as Peter Venkman again? Who wouldn t? Do I think it would be fun to see the return of Sigourney Weaver s Dana and her now grown-up son Oscar? Absolutely. There are, however, a lot of reasons why I don t think a new sequel is a good idea, and here are just a few.First, as much as I love the originals, I d rather Hollywood spend their time and money on some new material. We ve already got plenty of other remakes, reboots, reimaginings, and sequels without beating another (un)dead horse. Second, Harold Ramis (R.I.P.) is no longer with us, and it just wouldn t feel right to do a Ghostbusters film without good old Egon, not to mention the fact that we don t even know if the original cast is returning. Third, yes, Jason Reitman is blood-related to original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, but in no way does that automatically qualify him as a good candidate to direct a sequel. He had a pretty excellent track record for a while, but three of his last four films have ranged from less than stellar to downright inexplicable (Labor Day, anyone?), and he s never helmed a big, effects-driven blockbuster before. At this juncture, there are just too many unknowns and too many risks involved to make this a good idea.
