(Photo by National Geographic/Richard DuCree)Anyone who s heard Aretha Franklin sing could tell you she s a genius — but the third season of National Geographic s Genius, which follows the trajectory of the Queen of Soul s musical journey from childhood through the various stages of her career, pinpoints exactly how that genius manifested throughout her life.Helmed by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks, Genius: Aretha sees Emmy-, Grammy-, and Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo (one Oscar away from an EGOT) play Franklin throughout the decades of her adulthood, and newcomer Shaian Jordan play Little Re throughout her formative childhood years. And while it covers the biggest events in Franklin s life, beginning with singing in her preacher father s church (Courtney B. Vance plays C. L. Franklin) and continuing through the many evolutionary phases of her career, it s not strictly a biography. Each era in the eight-episode series, which airs in two-episode blocks over four nights from March 21-24, was specifically chosen to highlight Franklin s genius.Picking those moments wasn t too difficult a task for showrunner Parks. Say you walk outside and say I m looking for a dog; I m looking for a cat. That s what you re going to be focusing on, Parks said. So if I continually repeated to myself, We are telling Aretha Franklin s story through the lens of Genius, [it] let us focus on those moments where she demonstrated her genius as we understand it: Where she alchemized her pain into sonic gold, where she brought different peoples together for a greater good, where she created things that will endure for long past her lifetime, where she did things that people thought, You re crazy to try that, and she succeeded. I just continually focused on those moments. She has a wealth of them. What a life she lived. Read on to find out what else to know before tuning in to the season, which will land in full on Hulu on March 25, Franklin s birthday.1. Erivo Sang Live on SetBecause Franklin s voice and musical sense are so intrinsic to her genius, the actor playing the legend had to have her own musical chops. Enter multi-award winner Erivo, who thankfully has plenty of experience giving her all on a daily basis. (Have you HEARD her sing I m Here from The Color Purple? The performance that won her all those awards.) But even Erivo found certain aspects of Franklin s oeuvre particularly challenging. While recreating Franklin s live gospel album Amazing Grace, she performed an abridged version of Franklin s take on Never Grown Old. Aretha has this beautiful way of being able to sing a phrase that should be eight beats long and make it 16, and stretch it out with the breath that she takes, Erivo explained. There s something about getting into a song that feels really challenging because finally you can let go of the semantics of it. You can let go of the process and really just feel it. The sentiment is that there is a place that is not here, that we might not know until we pass on, where you can live on forever, where you never grow old. I just thought it was a really beautiful moment to sit and sing, and we sang that live on set, and it just felt good. 2. There s No Respect (Photo by National Geographic/Richard DuCree)Listen, while Franklin has dozens of famous songs, there s one in particular that she s associated with that you will not hear in the series: Respect. There s a simple reason for that — the show could not get the rights to it. (Jennifer Hudson plays Franklin in biopic called Respect, due out in August, so, uh, you might hear it there.)But Parks and her team took that as a challenge. We wanted the story to lead and the songs to follow, so we didn t want it to be a jukebox biopic kind of thing, Parks said. Because again, we re looking at Aretha Franklin s life through the lens of Genius, not through turn on her hits. But secondly, just an obvious plain fact, we couldn t get the rights to some of the songs. So we did what Black American people have been doing from the beginning, we make a cake out of what we got, you know what I m saying? It s a beautiful opportunity for us to focus on story. We get plenty of the hits, and we get a lot of lesser-known gems too. 3. The Details of Franklin s Young Life Will Shock Some Viewers(Photo by National Geographic/Richard DuCree)For people who only know Franklin as a singular musical legend, it might be jarring to learn about the singer s difficult childhood — which included having children at just 12 and 14 years old. It was certainly new information for Jordan as she prepared to take on the role of Little Re. We didn t really hear much about little Aretha s life. The media doesn t see that, Jordan said. Being able to see what she went through as a kid was a little different from what I studied and looked at. I looked at her interviews, I listened to her songs, and stuff, but that s way different because we didn t see her childhood on the screen. 4. Aretha s Relationship With Her Father and Her Siblings Was Always Complex(Photo by National Geographic/Richard DuCree)Franklin s preacher father C.J. Franklin was a fearsome figure — at one point in the series, he s described as loving Saturday night just as much as Sunday morning. But Vance understands how C.J. became the indefatigable figure he was: The son of sharecroppers in the early 20th century in the Deep South, he had two choices: the pulpit or the plow. When he chose the pulpit, he was kicked out of his house and had to sink or swim. It was that work ethic that C.J. brought to his work as a preacher, and when he realized how gifted Aretha was, he took advantage of that gift. To go from seeing what Black folks in the ’20s and the ’30s saw — their family relations dragged and beaten and burned and hung and shot, Vance said, took an enormous toll on his psyche. He instilled in his children, especially in Aretha, no matter how bad it gets, we re going to keep going and keep going until we achieve our goals. There is a high cost for that living. There were no psychiatrists and psychologists for Black folks to sit on the couch and talk about [their problems]. You had to figure it out, and the people who were the most vulnerable at that time, who suffered the most, I believe were the women and the children — Black women and Black children caught it from every side. While Aretha s sisters were also gifted singers, they didn t compare to Aretha and knew that their little sister was the favorite of the family. That complicated dynamic would continue throughout Aretha s life. There s a cost for that talent and the cost was her relationships — her relationships with her father, her relationship with her husband, relationship with her children, relationship with her sisters, Vance said . They went through it because she was so supremely gifted but how she got there, she was the favorite. Everybody knew that, and there s a cost for that in the internal family politics. And throughout it all, even though C.J. did leverage his daughter for his own gain, Aretha still loved her father and wanted to make him proud. In the end she was a young woman who wanted to do right by her father. She wanted to make her father proud, Erivo said. Though at the beginning and throughout her life they had a really complex relationship, there still was very much love there. I think she tried to find her own space that was outside of her father because for so long they were one and the same. And I think that even when that happened, there was still a part of her that wanted to be her father s daughter. 5. It Took a While for Aretha To Get the Credit She Deserved(Photo by National Geographic/Richard DuCree)Parks establishes early on that although so many people — particularly men — in Aretha s life tried to ride her coattails, it was Franklin herself who was steering the ship. She was the one who instructed her studio musicians about the sound she wanted, despite the fact that she didn t manage to get producing credit on her albums for years. In the first episode, Franklin is recording what will become Border Song and stops the room of all white men to ask where the pizza box that was sitting on top of the piano went. That empty cardboard box created a different sound, she explained. That initiative and confidence in her own gifts — and the fact that Franklin tried for a decade before she broke out on the music charts — inspired Erivo in her own musical career. How she was managing to [find] her voice, which then led to her being able to be bold enough to ask for the credit for the work that she was doing, which meant that she was able to be celebrated in the right way, Erivo said, it s an inspiring thing to learn to do. To learn the ways in which she was able to stand up for herself — because sometimes it was a quiet storm, sometimes it was raging — to meander through all of those ways in which she found a way to plant herself was really special. Genius: Aretha premieres Sunday, March 21 at 9 p.m. on National Geographic Channel.

Matthew Lewis and New Zealand comedian Rose Matafeo play a long-term couple who become pregnant and choose to embark on a baby bucket list of things they want to do before they become boring parents. Matafeo, who previously starred in another Neal Waititi production, The Breaker Upperers, is a revelation in this hilarious star-making vehicle, and Lewis gives one of his most captivating performances as her earnest partner who, despite not carrying the child, seems to be the only one to grasp the reality of the imminent birth. We recently chatted with Lewis about working in his generation s push to delay parenthood, what s on his Baby Bucket List, and what it was like working with Matafeo.Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you get involved with the project and why did you want to sign on?Matthew Lewis: I read the script before I even knew about anybody involved with it. I loved the story and thought it would really resonate with a lot of people. I especially enjoyed the gender reversal, in that typically it’s the men who are running away from responsibility and having a baby and want to selfishly get on with their lives and leave the woman to carry the burden both metaphorically and physically. This movie is the opposite; it’s Tim that is desperate to be a good dad, the kind of dad that he never had, whereas Zoe is trying to stay independent and is scared of having to move on to the next stage of her life and motherhood. Not to mention I really felt that I “got” Tim, I understood him. Sometimes you read a script, and even if you like it, it feels like it’s going to be an effort; you’re going to have to work to discover this character and create something. Other times, like this, it’s all there on the page. You just get it, and you know exactly who he is, who you want him to be, how he talks, etc. That’s always nice. They’re both fun in their own way, and it still works, but it’s a lot less work.Talk about Rose Matafeo. Why is she such a great person to fall in love with on screen?Rose is incredibly talented. People already know her for comedy, but she’s got a real instinct for drama, and it’s incredibly natural and charming, and being able to fuse both is not easy, but she just knows how to do it. She loves film and so has a keen understanding of its structure and what works and what doesn’t being a master of improv helps too. It’s impressive to see somebody instinctively understand how to be a leader both on-screen and off despite never having done it before. There has been a lot of talk about Millennials and Gen Zers waiting longer to have kids. Do you think this movie speaks to that?Yeah, absolutely. My generation and especially the one after, at least in the western world, live in this weird sort of limbo where so many simultaneously struggle to survive, to get a job, to earn a living wage, to get by, and yet also live in a world of opportunity, a world where you can fly around the world. You can live and work in other countries. Or at least that’s the idea we’re sold. We have more opportunity than any generation in history to do so many things the world is smaller than it’s ever been and there’s a worry that if you have kids and settle down before you’ve seen and done everything, then you’ve failed. You’ve wasted your life. But then also, nobody has any money and can’t pay their rent. I feel like so many people are putting off having kids in the hopes they can do all this stuff they’ve been promised they can do, but then they end up not being able to afford it, so they just go out drinking at the weekend. But you know what? That’s fine, isn’t it.Having kids, I’m sure, is a beautiful, wonderful thing, but you don’t have to. And anyone who chooses to is being entirely selfless, and that’s amazing. But it’s also not an indictment of a person to not want to. There’s f ing loads of humans on earth; we don’t really need more. But I guess the point is that we’re all led to believe that we can do all this cool stuff, but if we don’t and just have kids, then our life sucks and we’ve missed out. But a lot of (most?) people can’t even do those things anyway, but we because follow billionaires Instagrams we get annoyed we have kids instead of yachts. Or something? But yeah, this film is about that. Sort of.What would you put on your Baby Bucket List? I’ve been lucky that I had a few things I always wanted to do in my life and I’ve managed to do them. Not to sit here and chat about the cool s t I’ve been lucky enough to do, but I always wanted to swim with great whites, skydive, and bungee jump, and I’ve managed to do all three, the latter of which was achieved on this film! I’ve been trying to think in lockdown what I’ll do when we’re allowed out. It’s quite basic: Go out and see people. Go to a pub. An arcade? Play football. I’ve always wanted to go watch England play Ashes cricket in Australia. I suppose that’s a dream. Yeah, I could try to do that. I want to see Leeds play in the Premier League. They’re back there now played 20-odd games and nobody can go. That’s rubbish, so I’d like to go watch them when we’re allowed.Baby Done is available to rent or buy on VOD.

The Batman took a long time to take shape, but fans are finally starting to get the full picture of director Matt Reeves take on the character. At 2021 s DC FanDome event, fans of the oft-rebooted movie hero got a nice glimpse of what to expect from the film thanks to a new trailer. In it, the Riddler (Paul Dano) is taken into custody by the Gotham City Police. But that seems to have little effect on his bigger plan, which involves the Batman (Robert Pattinson), Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), and local mobster Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell). Its mix of Batman ’89 theatrics and Batman Begins realism may yet prove to be the right mix for this next iteration of the Caped Crusader.”At 2020 s DC FanDome, Reeves revealed the movie will take place in year two of Batman s crime-fighting career  an assertion backed up in the trailer by the reveal of a Batsignal a period in which he is adjusting to his new life and Gotham is adjusting to him. An HBO Max series tentatively titled Gotham P.D. will focus on Batman s year one, and follow corrupt cops in the city s police department.Let s take a look at more of what we know about the movie from earlier reveals as well as the history of how the project came together.[Updated on October 16, 2021]How The Batman Became Untangled from the DCEU(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Plans for the film began in 2014, when Warner Bros. had a massive, Marvel-style DC film universe in mind. An important pillar of that concept was Ben Affleck behind the cowl of the Dark Knight and in the director’s chair for a film called The Batman. It was to tie in to the character as he played it in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League and would follow the events of both films. Affleck teased the arrival of the DC Comics villain Deathstroke to his tale by posting a costume test with actor Joe Manganiello under the mask. The actor was later set to play the character in the film and made a brief appearance in the Justice League stinger scene. Some reports suggest the film would have taken place inside Arkham Asylum. But then things began to unravel. Despite commercial success, Batman v Superman was perceived as a creative misfire even as cameras began to roll on Justice League – leading to a rethink of the film s plot. Warner Bros. asked Affleck to re-write his script for The Batman as the shape of the film universe changed alongside Justice League. In January of 2017, he had stepped down as director with Matt Reeves soon taking over. He also eventually handed script duties over to Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, leaving many to wonder if Affleck would even star in the picture.Almost a full year of speculation followed until Affleck, then dealing with a number of personal problems, set the record straight in January of 2019, announcing his complete departure from the project. And with that, the original vision for The Batman gave way to Reeves’ new take. The New Players: Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Zoe Kravitz, and More(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Even before Affleck’s departure was confirmed, many began to speculate about the seventh person to wear the cowl in a theatrically released, live-action film. Rumors began to circle around The Lighthouse star Robert Pattinson, who emerged as the favorite and eventually took the role in May of 2019.Over the course of the following months, a cast list began to emerge, including Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman), Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Paul Dano as the Riddler, whose civilian identity in the film, Edward Nashton, is a one of his known aliases in the pages of DC comics. Over the Fall of 2019, Colin Farrell signed on as Oswald Cobblepot and Andy Serkis also stepped up to take over as Alfred Pennyworth from Jeremy Irons, who had played the character for Affleck s Batman. Other cast members include John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Con O’Neill as Chief Macheknize Bock, Alex Ferns as police commissioner Peter Savage, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Teen Wolf’s Max Carver and Charlie Carver also joined the cast, leading some to suggest they may play Batman rogues Tweedledum and Tweedledee.Behind the camera, Reeves’ crew includes director of photography Greig Fraser, editors William Hoy and Tyler Nelson, production designer James Chinlund and costume designer Jacqueline Durran. Reeves is producing the film alongside Dylan Clark while Simon Emanuel, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong, and Michael Uslan serve as executive producers. Michael Giacchino is set to score the film.At DC FanDome 2020, Reeves teased that, just as Batman is still finding himself in the movie, so too are the rogues gallery of villains we meet. As seen in the trailer, when we first encounter Selina Kyle, she s not Catwoman; ditto Farrell s Oswald Cobblepot, who s destined to be crime kingpin, the Penguin. From that list of cast and crew, a sense of The Batman began to emerge… as did a potential source of its story. The Long Halloween: A Serial Killer Stalks Batman and Gotham(Photo by DC Comics)Though Reeves referred to the plot as an original story from the moment he began answering questions about the film, the number of villains and supporting characters in the cast left many to wonder if it might be taking inspiration from Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.Set after the events of the seminal Batman: Year One storyline, it sees Batman attempting to learn the identity of a serial killer known as Holiday. It also accomplishes a few other things, like chronicling the year mobsters lost control of Gotham City to the costumed supervillains. The 13-issue miniseries was followed up by Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome, which saw Loeb and Sale return to some of The Long Halloween’s ideas, including the continuing deterioration of Gotham s organized crime families. But the key to The Long Halloween was its expansive cast and Batman encountering a mystery he could not easily crack.Early on, Reeves said he wanted to emphasize Batman as the world’s greatest detective – an element of the character generally downplayed in the more action-oriented Batman and Dark Knight film cycles – while also playing up the noirish elements inherent in the concept. Reeves said at DC FanDome 2020 that noirs like Chinatown have been a big inspiration for his approach to the material. Additionally, the costume test video of Pattinson in the batsuit and the Batmobile pictures clearly illustrate Batman during an early part of of his career, making the case for The Long Halloween as a primary source stronger.(Photo by Warner Bros.)It would not be the first time, though, the book was called upon as a source of inspiration or, indeed, the first time a Batman film used one of the better-known Batman stories in its development. The Dark Knight used one or two elements from the story while also grabbing from The Killing Joke. The Dark Knight Rises also pulled from the “No Man’s Land” story. But this should not suggest The Batman is a straight adaptation of The Long Halloween, as someone key to that story is missing from the film: Harvey Dent. The Long Halloween is also a Two-Face origin story that sees him promoted to Gotham City DA near the start of the story and, well, somewhere else by its conclusion. In lieu of Harvey, Sarsgaard plays Gil Colson, an original character for the film. Curiously, before Sarsgaard’s role was confirmed, some suggested he might be playing Harvey Dent, while yet others noted the character s name bares a resemblance to that of a corrupt Gotham Police officer who helped Two-Face in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. For the moment, we’re inclined to believe Sarsgaard is, in fact, playing a wholly new character with no ties to Gotham’s most famous lawyer. This suspicion also extends to Lawson’s Bella Reál, another new character said to be running for mayor in the film. As with DA Colson, we’re willing to accept this as the truth until presented with evidence that she is really Barbara Gordon or Poison Ivy.Making these obscure ties less likely, though, is the trailer released during the 2021 edition of DC FanDome. Based on the story hooks teased in the newer preview, the mystery plaguing the Batman is engineered solely by the Riddler, making him the key villain in a Batman film for the first time since 1995’s Batman Forever., in which he was portrayed by Jim Carrey. Granted, he shared his murderous plot in that film with Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Nevertheless, it seems more likely The Batman will take thematic ideas from The Long Halloween and leave most of its plot within its pages. The Look Of The Batman(Photo by @mattreevesLA)As with Joker, Warner Bros. made the choice to debut The Batman’s key costume in a short video before any paparazzi had a chance to shoots pictures of it on location. Seen through darkness and red light, the suit seems to employ a more bare-bones, off-the-shelf aesthetic. The body armor continues Batman ‘89’s basic design choice, but a cowl made of fabric sets it apart from all other cinematic Batmen. Some have also speculated the bat symbol is made of the gun Joe Chill used to kill the Waynes. It’s all pretty interesting even if the video makes it look a little too much like Daredevil’s costume. Subsequent set pics also offered a better look at the cowl, which may be inspired by Silver Age comic book artists like Dick Sprang and Carmine Infantino. At DC FanDome 2020, Reeves said that the fact this is only year two of Batman s career heavily influenced the design of the costume: Wayne built it himself, he s making adjustments, you can see the gashes from his scuffles on the suit. In March of 2020, Reeves unveiled the first look at the Batmobile. Eschewing the more outlandish design conventions established in Batman ’89, this car is, in fact, a muscle car with some obvious modifications. Long-time readers of Batman comics may even recognize the broad strokes of the design as the one Batman used through most of the 1980s and into the 1990s. The new Batmobile design continues the notion that Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne merely modified existing gear instead of inventing Bat-gadgets from whole cloth and, if nothing else, is an interesting departure from the previous Batman film cycles, particularly the tankish Tumbler and Justice League Batmobile.Ahead of the DC FanDome event in 2020, Reeves revealed even more in a Twitter post debuting the film s logo and FanDome-specific artwork:Excited to share the very first look at our official #TheBatman logo, and some very cool additional #DCFanDome artwork by the amazing @jimlee — see more of #TheBatman at the #DCFanDome global event in the Hall of Heroes this Saturday, 8/22! #TheBatman #DCFanDome #ForTheFans pic.twitter.com/ApfngNbyor Matt Reeves (@mattreevesLA) August 20, 2020Its Place In The DC Film Universe(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. TM & © DC Comics)Despite all the tell-tale markings of a reboot, The Batman’s place in the loose continuity of Warner Bros s DC film slate is still up for debate. During the early phases of development, Reeves suggested it could take place out of continuity like Joker, but quickly backpedaled to say it will have some ties and maybe even a cameo or two. At the same time, recasting Jim Gordon, who was played by J.K. Simmons in Justice League, with Wright also suggests the film is in a world all its own. But then again, the DC Universe is a place where world-changing events create convenient retcons. Pattinson could simply replace Affleck’s Batman in the new DC film reality where Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) co-exists with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Suicide Squad of 2021. Is all depends on whether or not Reeves would be interested in utilizing any of those ideas or, indeed, if Pattinson would want to bring his Batman to play with the other DC film heroes. The film will be released at the beginning of a full roster for the DC film universe, which includes The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Black Adam. We wouldn’t put it past Warner Bros. to try to connect them all to The Batman, but we won’t be disappointed if they remain separate. In the meantime, though, the principal cast is expected to return for at least two sequels to The Batman. The Batman is currently scheduled for release on March 4, 2022.Thumbnail image by Warner Bros. Ghcxuf Pixar may be rethinking its strategy after releasing its first film ever in the month of March. The numbers for Pixar s latest work, Onward, were expected to be on the lower end of the scale for the company, but the million opening turned out to even be low for the month in comparison to other animated efforts. The figures come at a time when the industry is potentially facing a new phase where the international dollar cannot be counted on as a safety net if American audiences don’t show up.King of the Crop: Onward Takes the Win, But Numbers Aren t So Magical When Pixar burst onto the scene with Toy Story in 1995, the Thanksgiving release opened with .14 million. Three years later, the studio s follow-up, A Bug’s Life, opened to .52 million. The only other release Pixar has had to start with less than million was their troubled production, The Good Dinosaur (.15 million) – more on that in a bit. All three of those were November releases, a strategy that generally paid off over the years with Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles – each one with a higher opening than the previous film. It was 11 years before they came back to November with The Good Dinosaur and then two years until they did it again with Coco, which opened to .8 million. Only five of Pixar’s films have failed to reach 0 million. Two of them were their first two films, another two were sequels to Cars, and the other was The Good Dinosaur. Onward is looking like the sixth. It s not for lack of quality. Of the 21 previously released Pixar films, 15 have retained Tomatometer scores of 90 or above. Onward is close, Certified Fresh at 86%, and is actually the third-best–reviewed wide release of 2020 to date behind The Invisible Man and the other new opener this week. The movie s million opening weekend haul means it stacks up against other March animated releases like so:Zootopia (.11 million)Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (.21 million)Ice Age: The Meltdown (.03 million)Monsters vs. Aliens (.32 million)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (.02 million)Home (.1 million)The Boss Baby (.19 million)Ice Age (.31 million)Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who (.01 million)How to Train Your Dragon (.73)The Croods (.63 million)Onward ( million)Rango (.07 million)Robots (.04 million)Mr. Peabody Sherman (.2 million)Meet the Robinsons (.12 million)TMNT (.25 million)Onward not even cracking that top 10 March animated openings has to be even more disappointing than being on the lower rung of the pretty elevated Pixar ladder. Every film from Peabody above passed 0 million eventually, and the average multiple from Robinsons up is a decent 3.61. That would give Onward a first estimate of 2 million, which would at least be higher than The Good Dinosaur’s 3 million but could end up on the rare red side of the Pixar ledger depending on the final budget, which no one is reporting right now. Onward’s tracking was in the mid-40s range, so we re showing some skepticism regarding the argument that panic over public health worries stopped people from hitting the cinemas. Whether that is the case overseas remains to be seen. The Top 10 And Beyond: Bad Boys Passed 0 Million, Emma Goes WideThere have been eight films – by our count – centered around basketball that have opened to million or more: Space Jam, Coach Carter, Uncle Drew, Semi-Pro, White Men Can’t Jump, Glory Road, Like Mike, Blue Chips. The Way Back does not join that list. The Ben Affleck basketball drama, which sees him reteaming with his The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor (who also did sports dramas, Miracle and Warrior), opened to .5 million, which is more in line with romantic hoops films like Just Wright (.28 million) and Love Basketball (.13 million). Those films ended up with .56 million and .45 million, respectively. (William Friedkin’s Blue Chips opened to .12 million and finished with just .07 million.) That is not great for a film budgeted somewhere between million and million, but not a disaster either. The film’s Certified Fresh 87% Tomatometer score is the second-best among 2020’s wide releases and is up there with Affleck’s best-reviewed starring efforts, such as Argo (96%), The Town (93%), Gone Girl (88%), and Chasing Amy (87%).Last week’s number 1 film, The Invisible Man, fell a decent 49% this weekend to .5 million. With million in the bank domestically, that puts it just ahead of The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy with a better second weekend than either Insidious: Chapter 2 or The Purge: Election Year. Last week we placed the film’s first estimate at million. We’re upping that to between million and million. It has grossed .2 million worldwide to date and it cost just million to make.(Photo by © Columbia Pictures)There are two other solid successes still in the top 10, with Sony’s Bad Boys for Life and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Bad Boys finally passed 0 million domestic, which is added into its 5 million haul worldwide. Sonic’s success is more…fine…as it approaches 0 million worldwide. It’s in profit, if a small one. But a profit is a profit, especially one delayed for touch-up work. Not doing so well but still hanging in there is DC’s Birds of Prey, which is up to million domestic and close to 0 million worldwide. That is going to amount to around a million loss for those invested. That is a drop in the bucket compared to The Call of the Wild. The film is still on the path for around million, but is only at .5 million worldwide right now and it is chasing down a production budget of 5 million. This film could lose anywhere between 5 million and 0 million when the final numbers are in.Finally, Focus expanded the new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma into 1,565 theaters in its third week and it grossed million. How does that compare with Focus s release of 2005’s Pride and Prejudice?2005: Pride and Prejudice – Week 1 (.8 million / 215 theaters), Week 2 (.11 million / 221), Week 3 (.02 million / 1,299)2020: Emma – Week 1 (4,482 / 9), Week 2 (.15 million / 97), Week 3 ( million / 1,565)Pride had already grossed .9 million through its third weekend and finished with .4 million. Emma is up to .8 million. Impractical Jokers: The Movie is now up to .6 million after three weekends. Its launch was earlier and wider than Emma, which will eventually pass it. The 1996 version of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, released a year after Clueless, never made it into more than 848 theaters and grossed .23 million. This Time Last Year: Captain Marvel Arrives With a BangCaptain Marvel opened to the third-best March weekend ever with 3.43 million. That made up 77.47% of the top 10 revenue for the weekend, with only How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and A Madea Family Funeral making more than million among the rest of the movies in theaters. They did do a bit better than that, with .68 million and .46 million, but it trailed off from there with The LEGO Movie 2 and Alita: Battle Angel doing just .86 million and .21 million in their respective fifth and fourth weekends of release. The documentary, Apollo 11, did break onto the list with .25 million in just 405 theaters. The top 10 films grossed a total of 8.06 million and averaged 72.7% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed .23 million and averaged 74.1% on the Tomatometer. This is just the ninth time since 2010 that the top 10 films on a March weekend came in with under 0 million. On the Vine: A Controversial Hunt Finally Lands in TheatersNext week audiences will finally have an opportunity to see Craig Zobel’s The Hunt, which was delayed last September in the aftermath of a mass shooting. Vin Diesel takes a stroll into comic-book land with Bloodshot and we have another film about a Christian rock star, I Still Believe, which is hoping to break out for Lionsgate the way Roadside’s I Can Only Imagine did back in 2018. Onward is likely to hold onto the number 1 spot for a second week, but this is the one film that could spring an upset. Look out in your area too for Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The drama, which premiered at Sundance, has maintained a perfect 100% with critics and is being called one of the year’s best films.
