This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tenet, and Tom Cruise s Space Project. This WEEK S TOP STORYSONIC THE HEDGEHOG (AND PROBABLY TAILS, TOO) TO RETURN IN 2022(Photo by Paramount Pictures)We may have had to wait a few more months (from 11/15/2019 to 2/14/2020) for the character design to be redone on Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%), but Paramount is apparently attempting to avoid too much of a wait for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The studio has announced a release date of April 8, 2020 for the sequel, or just two years and two months after the first film, and that s even after they already factored in the various delays right now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sequel does not have a premise yet, but the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog teased both the debut of Tails the fox, but also the villainous return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (now looking even more like his video game character). Director Jeff Fowler will return for the sequel, working from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who also both worked on the first film. Ben Schwartz is also expected to return as the voice of Sonic, and he may also again be joined by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter (though neither is confirmed yet). Release dates are obviously changing all the time, but other movies scheduled within a month of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 include Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), The Matrix 4 (4/1/2022), and Black Panther II (5/6/2022).Other Top Headlines1. PIXAR TRAVELS TO ITALY IN 2021 FOR THE SEA MONSTER ADVENTURE LUCA (Photo by Disney/Pixar)Movie studios are increasingly planting untitled films on the release calendar these days, especially when the title in question is a new property and not a sequel, prequel, or remake. So, we ve actually known for a while that Disney and Pixar were planning on releasing something next summer on June 18, 2021; we just didn t know anything else beyond that. Normally, Disney and Pixar might have made a big announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, but that, of course, ended up being replaced by last week s Comic-Con@Home, which had some big panels, but not as many as usual. Instead, we learned through other means (in this case, Collider) that Pixar s next movie after Soul (11/20/2020) will be a fantasy adventure set in Italy called Luca. We also have this fairly lengthy premise: Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface. Some writers are already comparing Luca to both Call Me By Your Name (thanks to the setting) and Guillermo del Toro s The Shape of Water.2. JORDAN PEELE TEAMS UP WITH ISSA RAE FOR SCI-FI HORROR SINKHOLE (Photo by Priscilla Grant, MJP/Everett Collection)Ever since his breakout success in 2017 with Get Out (Certified Fresh at 98%), Jordan Peele has worn several hats (director, producer, and host) on a variety of horror, thriller, or related genre movies and shows, including Us (Certified Fresh at  93%), CBS All Access s The Twilight Zone, HBO s upcoming series Lovecraft Country, and this fall s reboot of Candyman. We can now add another project to his upcoming filmography, as he will be producing a sci-fi horror film for Universal Pictures called Sinkhole, in which Issa Rae (The Lovebirds, HBO s Insecure) will star. The premise revolves around a strange pit that appears in the backyard of what otherwise seems like a perfect home, with the added information that the original short story started as a writers group project with the theme, I married a monster, and that the story will explore themes of female identity and perfection. 3. AMY ADAMS BIZARRE WERE-DOG DRAMA NIGHTBITCH (Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)Plenty of werewolf movies have been made since the 1920s, and along the way, the concept has certainly veered into comedy, such as with Jon Landis An American Werewolf in London, Michael J. Fox s Teen Wolf, and, one could reasonably argue, with Disney s Shaggy D.A. franchise. Now, werewolves are frequently men, but Amy Adams is now attached to star in a film called Nightbitch which will team her up with the Annapurna production company, with which she has worked four times before (The Master, American Hustle, Her, and Vice). Nightbitch, which is not technically a werewolf movie, will star Adams as a former artist who is thrust into stay-at-home domesticity after the birth of her son, who becomes increasingly worried that she may be turning into a dog. (Some versions of this story suggest it is actually the baby that is turning into a dog, but the official premise of the source novel, which comes out next summer, is pretty clear.)4. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S TENET CHANGES RELEASE STRATEGY AGAIN(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros.)As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the USA, movie theaters remain unsure about when they will be able to fully reopen. Last Friday, we heard that Warner Bros. was considering opening Tenet internationally first and then in the United States at a later point. That plan was confirmed on Monday when the studio released a press release that the film will be released in over 70 countries on August 26, 2020 before opening in the United States a week later, just in time for Labor Day weekend, but only in select cities. What s unclear is whether that Labor Day release will also then lead to a wider release for Tenet, or if it will end up adding something like a VOD release in lieu of a wide release (which may not be fully possible in September if not enough theaters are open in the USA by then). Of course, this also means that American movie fans will have to endure at least a week of possible social media spoilers during which the rest of the world understands exactly what Tenet is about.5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE PROJECT GETS 0 MILLION BUDGET AND MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE HELP (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)It probably was inevitable that someone would eventually want to make a big budget movie in outer space, but the when felt further away until recently. And if any movie star was going to attempt it (and do most of his own stunts), it was also probably obvious that it would be Tom Cruise. Just two months after we first found out about Cruise s plans to film a movie in outer space, the news broke this week that a deal has been made with Universal Pictures to fund the project with an atmospheric budget of over 0 million. It had already been known that the film will be directed by Doug Liman (who worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow, Certified Fresh at 91%), but another name that has joined the production is Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise s recent Mission: Impossible director (who s preparing to film movies #7 and #8 soon). McQuarrie will serve as one of the film s producers, and also contribute story ideas (a credit just shy of actually writing the screenplay). In related news, Top Gun: Maverick recently became just one of the many movies to have its 2020 release date delayed until next year (7/2/2021), which is almost two years after its original release date (July 12, 2019).6. BUZZFEED GETTING INTO MOVIES #14 WILL SURPRISE YOU!(Photo by Nicholas Kamm/Getty Images)In the 2000s, the popular news satire website The Onion announced that they would be getting into the movie business, but all we got was the little-seen 2008 project The Onion Movie. In that same spirit, Buzzfeed is now apparently hoping to have better success with a cinematic endeavor, as they are now partnering with Lionsgate for a theatrical film slate. Although we haven t gotten any specific examples of what a Buzzfeed movie might be exactly (documentary? drama? comedy? collection of cat videos?), the press release did say that the movies will be aimed at millennial and Gen Z audiences, so if you re over the age of 40 or so, these movies apparently won t be for you. Lionsgate and Buzzfeed expect to launch their first co-production sometime in 2021.7. COURTENEY COX WILL BE THERE FOR YOU (AGAIN), SCREAM 5 FANS(Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)When Neve Campbell was first announced in May to be in talks to return to the Scream franchise for Scream 5, this column predicted that we would soon hear about a few other returning cast members as well. That hunch was confirmed soon after with the news that David Arquette was returning as Deputy Dewey Riley, but it took another two months for Courteney Cox to be announced as returning as Gale Weathers. Scream 5 will be directed by the team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (A.K.A. Radio Silence), who are currently best known for last summer s horror comedy Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). So far, no new cast members have been announced, but presumably, that will soon change, and at this point, it s all but expected that Neve Campbell s return will be officially announced in the near future.8. SETH ROGEN PRODUCING PROJECT ABOUT SECRET HOLLYWOOD HUSTLER (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)It s not uncommon for directors, writers, or actors who first became famous for broad comedies to stretch out into more serious films. Recent examples of this include: Adam McKay (who went from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy to The Big Short); Jay Roach (from Austin Powers to Recount and Game Change); and Peter Farrelly (from Dumb and Dumber to Green Book). Someone else who appears to be heading down a similar track is Seth Rogen, who is obviously best known for stoner comedies like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, and This is the End. Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg are partnering with director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) for an adaptation of the 2017 documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood (Certified Fresh at 86%). Guadagnino will direct the adaptation about the life of Scotty Bowers, a former U.S. Marine who had a second career during the golden age of Hollywood as a pimp and hustler for many within the secret world of the studios and actors, frequently using a Hollywood gas station as a cover location. Details of Scotty Bowers life also inspired the Netflix series Hollywood. It s not yet known who will star in this film, but one has to guess that two possible candidates might be Channing Tatum (a friend of Seth Rogen) or Armie Hammer (who starred in Guadagnino s Call Me By Your Name).9. FAMOUS ACTORS TO PERFORM INTO THEIR SMART PHONES FOR WITHIN/IN (Photo by NurPhoto/Getty Images)Before 2020, most of us had presumably gotten pretty used to slick filmmaking and TV production styles, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and many TV shows essentially became very well publicized Zoom calls. It was probably inevitable, therefore, that there would eventually be a movie that was filmed in that style. Although Michael Bay is also producing a pandemic thriller called Songbird that may also look like it was filmed by the actors, the movie that sounds closest to that theme is called Within/In. The project is described as a made-at-home anthology film revolving around themes of confinement and isolation. Within/In will feature several established actors, including Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Chris Cooper, Rebecca Hall, Sanaa Lathan, Emily Mortimer, Alessandro Nivola, Rosie Perez, and Debra Winger. Since it s an anthology film, we can expect there to be several individual stories, but since it s also made at home, most of the actors also won t appear onscreen together (at least not physically). Many of the actors (including Chris Cooper and Griffin Dunne) will also be taking directing credits as they re basically directing themselves. What does the MCU world look like after Endgame? We re about to find out, with Spider-Man: Far From Home swinging into theaters next week and closing out Phase 3 of the MCU. The new movie sees Spider-Man/Peter Parker heading off on vacation to Europe where he encounters some new, elemental threats – and a superhero mentor figure in the shape of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Just like you, we have so may questions: Is Mysterio a good guy? Are we talking multi-verses here? And how is Peter coping without – pause for an Endgame spoiler alert – Tony in his life? We sat down with Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Samuel L. Jackson to get some answers. In this extended interview, the cast members talk about the post-Endgame landscape, Tony Stark’s legacy, and that buzzy chemistry between Tom and Jake.Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters July 2, 2019Like this? 2. 公平游戏环境
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) 63% Over the course of the past couple decades and change, movies based on video games have earned a reputation as subpar entertainment, to be generous. Critically speaking, things trended a bit upward in 2018 with Rampage (51%) and the Tomb Raider reboot (52%), and 2019 saw the genre s first two Fresh entries in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (69%) and The Angry Birds Movie 2 (73%), which currently sit at #2 and #1, respectively, on our list of all video game movies ranked. With that context in mind, we come to 2020 and Sonic the Hedgehog, an animated/live-action hybrid adventure in which the titular Sega hero (voiced by Ben Schwartz) travels to Earth from his home planet, befriends a local sheriff (James Marsden), and attempts evade capture by the nefarious Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who hopes to harness Sonic s power for evil. The film endured a minor controversy when its first trailer premiered and longtime fans cried foul at Sonic s subtly creepy character design, but after the folks behind the film pushed its release date back and reworked the visuals, most moviegoers seemed optimistic. As it turns out, those moviegoers weren t entirely misguided, as critics say Sonic the Hedgehog is mostly wholesome family fun, with a lively performance from Carrey that harkens back to his 1990s heyday. The jokes may not all land, but there are a lot of them that come at you, and while the rest of the film largely caters to a younger audience, there s enough in there for adults to ensure a trip to the theater won t be entirely mind-numbing.bob体育下注Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Salem s Lot and Tom and Jerry, and new roles for Ben Affleck, Peter Dinklage, and Jennifer Lopez. This WEEK S TOP STORYLEONARDO DICAPRIO JOINS GUILLERMO DEL TORO S NIGHTMARE ALLEY REMAKE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection, Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Getty Images)The dark 1947 carnival drama Nightmare Alley is not as famous as other examples of film noir, but it remains a dark, creepy film worth seeking out. The film s profile is about to rise much higher in the next year or two, though, because Guillermo del Toro has decided a Nightmare Alley remake will be his next film as director, after the Academy Award-winner The Shape of Water. Leonardo DiCaprio will headline Nightmare Alley in the lead, a carnival showman who rises to fame by pretending to talk to the dead as a medium, taking over the role played by Tyrone Power in the original. The 1947 movie was an adaptation of a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham that did take some liberties with the story (especially the ending), so it s possible that GDT s adaptation will be closer to the source material. Nightmare Alley will start filming in late 2019, and will probably be released sometime in 2020. Speaking of remakes, Guillermo del Toro also talked this week about his former plans for remakes of classic monster movies like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, saying, I don t think it s going to happen. Fresh Developments1. JAMES BOND 25 EVENT CONFIRMS RAMI MALEK, AND MORE (Photo by Well Go USA Entertainment)MGM and Eon Productions, the companies behind the James Bond franchise, staged a big event yesterday at Ian Fleming s Goldeneye estate in Jamaica to promote James Bond 25. Some speculated that the event might reveal the title (it didn t), but there were several casting revelations. As had been previously reported, Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) was confirmed to be the film s villain. The biggest new news was that Jeffrey Wright, who skipped Skyfall and Spectre, will be returning as CIA agent Felix Leiter, joining Daniel Craig s Bond on an international adventure to rescue a kidnapped scientist. Whatever it s called, the 25th official James Bond film will be directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, HBO s True Detective) when it s released on April 8, 2020.2. STEPHEN KING S SALEM S LOT VAMPIRES FINALLY STALKING THE BIG SCREEN (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)This year marks seven years since the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, which was, for the most part, the last successful Hollywood movie featuring traditional vampires (2014 s Dracula Untold, not so much). Sony and Marvel are now filming Morbius (starring Jared Leto) for release next summer (7/31/2020), so that s at least a vampire movie coming out soon. A new project that will be further out is an adaptation of Stephen King s Salem s Lot, which was previously adapted twice as a TV mini-series in 1979 and 2004. Producer James Wan and screenwriter Gary Dauberman previously collaborated on The Conjuring spinoffs Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and the upcoming Annabelle Comes Home, and are now reuniting for Salem s Lot. Stephen King s original 1975 novel is about an author who returns to his hometown to discover that a spooky mansion is now home to a European vampire and his brood. (Note: The proper title of Salem s Lot starts with an apostrophe, because it s an abbreviation of Jerusalem s Lot, which is the town.)3. PETER DINKLAGE LEAVING WESTEROS FOR THE THICKET (Photo by HBO)HBO s Game of Thrones has an extended cast of dozens of actors, so with the show ending, we re in the early stages of an expected deluge of post-Game of Thrones casting announcements. Many of them are European and mostly work outside Hollywood, but one of the stars who very much is a Hollywood star is Peter Dinklage (for example, Avengers: Infinity War). Dinklage s next film will even be produced by Hollywood Gang, which is the company behind the dark and twisted thriller The Thicket. In it, he will star as a fierce bounty hunter named Reginald Shorty Jones, who is hired by a boy in Texas after his sister is kidnapped by a serial killer known as Cut Throat Bill.4. WHO S BEN AFFLECK GONNA CALL? GHOST ARMY (Photo by Universal Pictures)Before he signed on to play Batman in 2013, Ben Affleck s career as director was moving pretty quickly, with three films in five years (Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo), all Certified Fresh. Affleck had to delay filming Live by Night for a while (it eventually came out in 2016), and now it s been another three years since that film. This week, we finally heard what film he will direct next, for what will effectively be only his second film over the last seven years. Affleck will direct and star in Universal Pictures Ghost Army, which will be adapted from the book The Ghost Army of World War II: How One Top-Secret Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound Effects, and Other Audacious Fakery. (The great thing about non-fiction books is how they can relate the whole premise in a subtitle.) One can draw a pretty obvious correlation between Ghost Army and Affleck s Argo, which was also a fact-based drama about how moviemaking techniques were used to carry out a mission (in that case, the liberation of diplomats during the Iran Hostage Crisis). The Ghost Army was also adapted as a PBS documentary in 2013.5. ANGELA BASSETT TO DRINK YOUR GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (Photo by Phil Bray/Fox Searchlight Pictures)Although they re mostly supporting roles, Angela Bassett has been racking up an impressive series of high profile films recently, including Black Panther (as his mom), Bumblebee (as the voice of the villain Shatter), and Mission: Impossible Fallout (as the CIA director). This week, Bassett signed on as one of the leads in an action thriller called Gunpowder Milkshake, as one of the unassuming leaders of a massive armory.  She joins two already-signed actresses who are also coming off very popular franchises: Lena Headey stars in HBO s Game of Thrones as Queen Cersei Lannister, and Karen Gillan plays Nebula in Avengers: Endgame (and also co-starred in 2017 s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle).6. COLIN FARRELL, CYCLOPS, AND BRAN STARK ARE VOYAGERS (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.)After an early career that included The Illusionist (73% Certified Fresh) and Limitless (69% Fresh), director Neil Burger ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/neil_burger ) is currently coming off two films below 43% Rotten (Divergent and The Upside). For his next film, Neil Burger has cast the male lead ( https://deadline.com/2019/04/voyagers-colin-farrell-lily-rose-depp-tye-sheridan-cast-neil-burgers-lord-of-the-flies-in-space-universal-agc-1202602566/ ) from The Lobster, Colin Farrell, along with a young cast that includes Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark from Game of Thrones). The movie will be a science fiction thriller called Voyagers and show what happens when a spaceship with 30 young people sent to populate a new planet experiences a surprise disaster.Rotten Ideas3. BRITNEY SPEARS GETTING MUSICAL, ONCE UPON A ONE MORE TIME (Photo by Jason LaVeris/Getty Images)This summer, we ll finally get the ninth feature film directed by Quentin Tarantino, the 1960s period piece, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but it won t be the only movie in the next few years (or so) that borrows that naming convention, because Sony Pictures has won the screen rights to an upcoming Broadway musical called Once Upon a One More Time. As you might be able to guess, it will be a fairy tale musical using classic songs by Britney Spears (was Spears career long ago enough now to be considered classic ? #thiswriterisold). The golden oldies that will be featured in the musical will include Circus, Lucky, Toxic, and Oops I Did It Again. There is not yet a writer or director for this movie, or an idea of who might star.2. JENNIFER LOPEZ SAYS MARRY ME TO OWEN WILSON(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant/Getty Images)The romantic comedy has almost vanished from the big screen (except for rare films like Isn t It Romantic?), but the genre is starting to enjoy a comeback, thanks in large part to streaming sites like Netflix. The distributors that are probably going to commit most fully to something like this are the indies or smaller studios that mostly focus on fringe or counterprogramming genres anyway. One such company is STXfilms, and this week, they moved forward with the romantic comedy Marry Me with Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Lopez will play a pop star who flees from her cheating groom at the altar and picks a random guy (Wilson) from the audience and marries him instead. Marry Me will be directed by Kat Coiro, whose three previous films all received Rotten Tomatometer scores.1. CHLOE GRACE MORETZ TO STAR IN TOM AND JERRY(Photo by Shane Mahood/Focus Features)Although their long-in-development sequel to Space Jam is the project that gets the most media attention (thanks to LeBron James), Warner Bros. is also moving along with their plans to reboot Tom and Jerry in just under two years (4/16/2021, to be precise). We ve known for a while that Tom and Jerry will be a live action/animation hybrid (in the tradition of 1945 s Anchors Aweigh), with the title cat and mouse being mute characters (so they won t have any voice actors). The lead human, we learned this week, will be Chloe Grace Moretz, who will play a hotel worker who hires a cat named Tom to get rid of a pesky mouse named Jerry who has taken up residence there. Tom and Jerry is the week s most Rotten Idea not because of Moretz, but because it s going to be directed by Tim Story, who hasn t directed a Fresh movie that wasn t a Kevin Hart comedy concert film since 2002.Like this? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
(Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images)In 2015 when Jordan Peele ended his wildly popular sketch comedy show Key Peele, we were more than a little heartbroken oh, the gifs that we have missed. Some may have questioned walking away from the show at the peak of its popularity, but then Peele wrote, directed, and produced one of the biggest hits of 2017, the genre game-changing social thriller Get Out. After Get Out won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and pulled a 0 million box office haul, the only question we had was What is he going to do next? That auspicious debut catapulted the 40-year-old multihyphenate and his production company MonkeyPaw productions into a host of upcoming projects. Early Monkeypaw Productions like the digital series Weird City, the docu-series Lorena, Oscar-winner BlacKkKlansman, and The Last O.G. were each Certified Fresh, and last weekend Peele s Get Out follow-up Us was met with nearly universal critical acclaim (it s currently Fresh at 100%). Justin Chang of the LA Times called the home invasion horror tale an artful, ruthless balance of horror and hilarity. Peele has said he would be retiring from acting, but with over 10 projects in various stages of production and a perfect record of Fresh hits, let s take a look at what he s working on and why we re excited for it.Us (2019) 93%Release Date: March 22, 2019Key Players: Lupita Nyong o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Jordan PeeleWhy are we excited: Early word out of SXSW has us beyond excited for Peele s next nightmare, currently rated 100% on the Tomatometer. Nyong o s first starring role highlights her versatility and more than confirms our decision to crown her our pick for 2019 s Scream Queen. AbruptioRelease Date: March 28, 2019 (Global), Sometime 2019 (US)Key Players: Jordan Peele, James Marsters, Christopher McDonald, Sid Haig, and Evan MarloweWhy are we excited: Peele lent his voice to an independent film that has been in production since 2015, but will finally hit theaters later this year. B-Movie icon Sid Haig rounds out the voice cast of this tortured tale about a hapless drifter who wakes to find an explosive device has been implanted in his neck. Latex puppets are enough to creep anyone out, and adding some bona fide horror fanatics to the cast and crew makes Abruptio a can t-miss.The Twilight Zone 66%(Photo by CBS All Access)Release Date: April 1, 2019Key Players: Jordan Peele, Adam Scott, John Cho, Kumail Nanjiani, Allison Tolman, Jacob Tremblay, Steven Yeun, Ginnifer Goodwin, Sanaa Lathan, Tracy Morgan, Greg Kinnear, Zazie Beetz, and Seth Rogen. Why are we excited: Peele s Twilight Zone continuation is aiming to go head to head with Black Mirror and American Horror Story for the title of Best Horror Anthology. The cast is stacked with A-listers and beloved stars. Little is known about the various episodes, but we do know they will reimagine iconic entries from the original series. At a Television Critics Association panel earlier this month, we learned Adam Scott (Parks Recreation) will star in a new version of Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, the original episode of which featured William Shatner being tormented by a creature only he can see.The Last O.G. Season 2Release Date: April 2, 2019Key Players: Tracy Morgan, Tiffany Haddish, Allen Maldonado,  Ryan Gaul, Christian Mosby, Dante Hoagland, Cedric the Entertainer, Jordan PeeleWhy are we excited: One of the best surprises of 2018 was Tracy Morgan s welcome return to primetime TV. Co-starring current comedy it-girl Tiffany Haddish, The Last O.G. relied heavily on her and Morgan s comic timing for many of the laughs in season 1, but with an extended order, we think that season 2 will only build on wins and iron out some of the plotting issues. At this point, anything Haddish and Morgan do will have us doubled over with laughter.Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%Release Date: June 21, 2019Key Players: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Joan Cusack, Blake Clark, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris, Jodi Benson, Michael Keaton, Jeff Pidgeon, Kristen Schaal, Bonnie Hunt. Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Laurie Metcalf, Lori Alan, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, and Keanu ReevesWhy are we excited: With one trailer the entire Toy Story franchise has been given new life, courtesy of Toy Story 4 stars Ducky (Peele) and Bunny (Key). Voicing the adorable amusement park prizes in what feels like a long lost Key Peele sketch, we are all on board for a new installment of the Pixar franchise. Let s be honest they had us at To infinity and your Mom. Big Mouth 99% Season 3Release Date: Late 2019Key Players: Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klien, Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, Jordan Peele and Kristen Bell. Why are we excited: A strong but vital part of Nick Kroll s animated series Big Mouth, Peele voices the Ghost of Duke Ellington, a hilarious, sex-crazed, spectral version of the late jazz musician. One of a few characters voiced by the Get Out director, Ellington is a scene-stealer on a show that features talking hormone monsters, pillow love interests, and shame wizards.Lovecraft CountryRelease Date: Sometime in 2019Key Players: Jordan Peele, J. J. Abrams, Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Wunmi Mosaku, Aunjanue Ellis, and Elizabeth DebickiWhy are we excited: A Bad Robot co-production, Lovecraft Country is an HBO television adaptation of Matt Ruff s eponymous cult novel. Set in Jim Crow America, the historical horror fiction uses a pulp noir-styled narrative to chronicle the misadventures of protagonist Atticus Turner. Peele and J.J. Abrams, two of the hottest producers of the moment, are sure to craft a unique series under the guidance of showrunner Misha Green.Candyman (2021) 84%Release Date: Sometime in 2020Key Players: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nia DaCostaWhy are we excited: Aquaman villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had a small role in Us, and Nia DaCosta has tapped him to play the titular character in her Monkeypaw-produced Candyman continuation. Peele has said Candyman is one of his all-time favorite horror films, and though he is not in the director s chair, he is co-writing the script, and as a producer on the project, he ll likely provide a guiding hand during development. The HuntRelease Date: Sometime in 2020Key Players: David Weil, Nikki Toscano, Al Pacino, Josh Radnor, Caleb Emery, Greg Austin, Logan Lerman, Jerrika Hinton, Saul Rubinek, Carol KaneWhy are we excited: The Hunt looks to be a Nazi version of the A-team. A ragtag group of 1970s Nazi-hunters living New York City go on the chase to track down hundreds of high-ranking Nazis. Al Pacino adds a huge must-see factor as this marks the Oscar winner s first credit in an ongoing scripted series. Weil and Toscano will act as co-showrunners for the series, which looks to be an equal mix of comedy and thrills. () Release Date: TBDKey Players: Keegan-Michael Key, Clay McLeod Chapman, Jordan Peele, and Henry Selick. Why are we excited: The first reteaming of Key and Peele after the hilarious Keanu is already enough to pique our interest. In this stop-motion animated series, they ll voice the titular pair of demon brothers, who are forced to battle their archenemy to earn their way out of hell. Adding their voices and writing chops, the sketch comedy duo joins forces with the stop-motion legend Henry Selick, whose credits include The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline.Like this? (Photo by Courtesy of A24)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: YOUN YUH-JUNG Unbothered might be the best word to describe Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung s attitude towards her first major American awards campaign. When we chatted with the veteran star, who is Oscar-nominated for her turn as an unconventional and hilarious grandmother in writer/director Lee Issac Chung s Minari, she seemed pleased but mostly unaffected by the Hollywood hype around the film her recent accolades, which total more than 50 awards for her supporting performance.  To tell you the truth, it s not that [different], she said during an extended Zoom chat, periodically pulling on an electric vape pen that would put Leonardo DiCaprio s to shame.  I approached it simply, I am myself a grandmother. It s nothing special. She certainly never saw the awards-season hoopla coming when she signed on to the film.  One of my dearest friends brought me the script – it was so very touching and authentic. After I read it, I called her back and asked, Is this based on a real-life story? She said, Yes. And I said, Okay, I ll do it.' And so it was that she joined the quiet immigrant tale, loosely based on Chung s formative years growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas, about the Yi family, led by father Jacob (Steven Yeun), which journeys from California to the South to pursue the dream of building their own farm. Of her decision to play Soonja – who is not the type of grandma the family s young son (Alan Kim) was expecting – Youn says, The people are what is important to me, not the script, not the fame, and not the money. Then she adds with a laugh: Well, not anymore. THE YOUN YUH-JUNG ESSENTIALS: HOW A CHANCE ENCOUNTER MADE A KOREAN MEGA STAR(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films)If you ve seen her work in Minari, it s hard to believe that Youn never intended to act; her career began out of a chance encounter. Searching for a part-time job at a train station while studying at Seoul s Hanyang University, she was approached and asked to stand beside someone. He was a famous MC,  Youn recalls.  He asked if I could sit by him and hand presents to the audience. I did, and then they gave me a check for it! So that was great! She was surprised to learn how much could be made as a performer, and the next thing she knew she was going out for auditions. Then, in 1971, she was approached by director Kim Ki-young to star in what would become the second feature of his Housemaid trilogy, which had begun with 1960 s The Housemaid. The film, Woman of Fire, was, like its predecessor, a hit at home and abroad and catapulted Youn into stardom. We never expected anything like what happened. We never expected to have this world reception from the audience. When I took the job, I didn t even know he was a famous director in Korea.    She quickly followed up Woman of Fire with the title role in Jang Hui-bin, playing the infamous concubine for a Korean television mini-series that became a national phenomenon. With such a debut and streak of stellar work over 50 years, she s been dubbed The Korean Meryl Streep, a comparison she humbly rejects as unworthy praise. I wouldn t dare, Youn says. No, no, no. I mean, she s everything! Her art? Her work? No, no, no. But like the chameleon Streep, Youn has also found ways to re-invent herself over several decades, even while revisiting her older work, as she did in the 2010 Housemaid remake, a feat she quickly brushed aside with another joke: I thought that s very nice, me being in [the reboot] – and still being alive. THE COMEBACK: RECORD-BREAKING SERIES AND A DARING FILM ROLEThere was a period when Youn could not be seen on screens – when she immigrated to America in 1975, she took a 10-year hiatus from filmmaking. When she returned to full-time acting in 1985, she quickly racked up an impressive streak of television work, including Hur Jun, about 15th-century royal physician that broke viewership records with nearly 65% of the nation tuning in.Later, in 2002, she got the script for the film that would restart her silver screen work. Her role in Im Sang-soo s award-winning A Good Lawyer s Wife – full of sex and affairs and dysfunction – is the type of part actor s dream to play. Still, the then 50-ish mother of two hesitated at the time because, I wouldn t be dressed most of the film, I thought, I don t want to be half-naked with a bra. She added: But that s why most of the Korean actresses of that age turned down the role. But, to tell you the truth, I was remodeling my house, and I needed to work. Pragmatic and plain-spoken, Youn is practical about her career and its progression. I don t [map it out] ahead of time because planning things is when you know it s not going to be like that. So now I don t plan anything. If something happens, it happens, I will enjoy it; or, if I fail, that s my fault. (Photo by Courtesy of GEM Entertainment)By the time she starred in Actresses in 2009, Youn was once again one of the most recognizable faces in Korean entertainment, and the unscripted dramedy teamed her up with other premiere names of Korean stage and screen, including Kim Min-hee, who starred in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook Park’s period romantic thriller The Handmaiden. In the primarily improvised Actresses, each of the six actresses plays a fictionalized version of themselves as they prepare for a Korean Vogue photo shoot at a studio on Christmas Eve. Despite the pedigree and talent surrounding her, Youn says many of the actors felt uncomfortable with that level of improvisation and self-revelation. That was the first time we d done something like that in Korea, because we were all very famous. Some didn t want to talk about their private life but, as the oldest one, [I have] nothing to lose – so, I talked about my divorce and my private life. It is no wonder she felt okay with the mockumentary premise: A gathering over cocktails between director E J-yong, Youn, and actress Go Hyun-jung – the two actors have been friends for years – had inspired the idea for the movie, with the director wanting to show the public how charming the actresses were in real life. Spending an hour with Youn – even over Zoom and with not a cocktail in sight – we can see where the filmmaker was coming from.FAN FAVORITES: SENSE8, REALITY SHOW YOUN S KITCHEN, AND A SEXY THRILLERThe role that American audiences were most likely to know Youn for, pre-Minari, was in the Netflix series Sense8, which marked her first foray into American television. In the show, created by the Wachowski siblings, Youn played an inmate who helps one of the telepathic sensates escape from prison. She told us she was surprised to learn about the series global cult-like status and the massive internet fan campaign that prompted the streaming giant to approve one final episode to tie up loose ends when it was canceled after just two seasons. I didn t know that it was such a [big deal] until you mentioned it, Youn says. I m not good at the internet, as you could guess.”It was a small part with some big challenges: the very conceit of the show – where certain people on screen are seen in the minds of some characters, but are invisible to others – made the acting very difficult. They were supposed to be invisible to me. It was very distracting while also trying to concentrate on my lines. You wouldn t know that to watch her in the series; Youn s performance as the wise prisoner made a significant impression on fans, even within her limited screen time.Scripted television is not the only place that Youn has made an impression on the small screen; she is also somewhat of a reality TV star with two shows under her belt. A chance meeting with a famed reality show producer allowed her to join the travel show Sisters Over Flowers before she later did Youn s Kitchen, which featured different twists on traditional Korean dishes.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC films. ) The producer very sincerely chased me, but I told him I m not the right person to be in a reality show, Youn says. I m a very frank person. I would be terrible. However, recognizing that the actress s undeniable charisma is the stuff reality shows are made of, he did not take no for an answer. “We kept meeting each other, and then he kept saying You re going to do the show.’ I didn t realize that at the time, but if he wanted somebody, he could get them – and that s a skill. Youn s Kitchen was another success, with the cinema icon peeling back the layers of her life a bit to celebrate with friends and good food.2012 s The Taste of Money, in which she gives a deliciously evil performance as the matriarch of an über-rich family, peeled back the layers even further. A gender-bent twist on the Housemaid story, Money placed Youn s Baek Geum-ok as the domineering leader of the house and the usual female servant character reset as a handsome young male secretary. Dismissed by critics after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the steamy thriller raised more than a few eyebrows with its depictions of sex, greed, and corruption, and has gone on to enjoy a cult-like status.Regardless of how critics judged Money, Youn marks it as another memorable moment for different reasons – it again allowed her to be very vulnerable on screen while playing a part typically given to male characters. Yeah, I was getting naked over 60, my goodness, she says. Usually, it is the men who get power and use that for sex, but this time it was me, a woman, and I have to say I liked that. FRESHEST WORK: STEALING SCENES IN CELEBRATED IMMIGRANT TALE, MINARI(Photo by Courtesy of a24)How does Youn feel about the current spotlight on Korean cinema, Korean stories, and – during this awards season – her work and Oscar chances? It s all Bong Joon-ho s fault! she says, laughing as she casts the Oscar-winning Parasite director as the villain who has brought global attention to Korean cinema. I am glad I m not in Korea talking to reporters there, [they] like to count the chickens before they ve hatched. There s pressure on me because people are expecting me to win something. We used to watch the Oscars like they were in another world, but because of him everyone in Korea thinks they are in Hollywood now.” I know things have happened, she went on to say, but this [holding up her Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh trophy with a sly smile] is the only actor award that came to me in the mail. (We re glad to know our shipping folks are on it.) When we point out that more hardware is likely coming, she gives a slight shoulder shrug and explains that nothing could ever diminish or amplify her love and connection to the film and those that collaborated with her make it.(Photo by Courtesy of a24)This bond and family-like dynamic carried over to everyone on the Minari crew, but particularly the main cast who, due to the sweltering heat, would often congregate in the set that stood in for the interior of the characters trailer home. The conditions of the shoot were a crucible – this is not a cushy trailer shoot, she says, laughing. You re in the middle of Oklahoma heat. And after one day, I thought I need to go back home. I don t think I should be shooting in America. Luckily, she stayed, in part due to an extended visit from the very friend who handed her the script in the first place – a visit that was something of a mea culpa. When Youn learned Plan B, a company co-founded by Brad Pitt, was producing the project, she figured it could be a lucrative role and inquired about the budget. Her friend relayed the rate in Korean currency, quickly calculating 200 million South Korean won (roughly 5,000), but when she learned her fee would be nowhere near that, she briefly had second thoughts. However, after the friend promised to come visit the set for an extended period of time, the idea of suffering through it seemed more palatable. In thinking back on the shoot now, she is reverential about the experience. I think of my friend sacrificing her vacation to come along with me, about hiding out in the set trailer with Alan, Steven, and Yeri [Han, who plays her daughter] – one of the few locations with ample AC. My friend is an exceptional cook, so every night we gathered at my Airbnb – everyone did – because the food was incredible, and that s how we became a family. With such a foundation behind it, it s no wonder the world – and awards voters – fallen a little bit in love with film and everyone involved, especially the unconventional grandmother at its center.Minari is in theaters and available On Demand now.Download Rotten Tomatoes printable Oscar Ballot; cast your vote in our digital Oscar ballot. Speaking of sports movies, there s another one hitting theaters this week with a decidedly different angle. Run the Race takes another faith-based approach to the Midwestern sports drama, as it follows two brothers living on their own Zach (Tanner Stine) is the star of his high school football team, while David (Evan Hofer) no longer plays, due to injury. When Zach also succumbs to injury on the field, the two of them face their troubles in startlingly different ways. We d love to tell you what the critics thought of Run the Race, but the film wasn t widely screened for them, which means it s up to you to guess the Tomatometer!
(Photo by Jessica Miglio / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, Gerald s Game) was looking at a banner year, with the pending release of The Haunting of Bly Manor, the second installment to his hit Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House, and the start of production for his next project with the streamer, Midnight Mass. Then the entertainment industry shut down, with TV and film productions suspended as precautionary measures in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Midnight Mass was two days away from principal photography when we shut down, Flanagan told Rotten Tomatoes when we checked in with him recently. I flew my family out of Vancouver just before they closed the border, and I could actually see some of the exterior sets we built from the airplane. A few days before the shutdown, we had a table read of all seven episodes with the full ensemble, and it was amazing. This show is so special to me. It was surreal to just put everything down and walk away from it. The series, according to Deadline, follows  an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events — and frightening omens — after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. The series creator has been building up to this show for years now, with it beginning as an Easter egg in movies Hush and Gerald s Game.Flanagan may not know when things will pick back up, but he s confident they will:  Netflix has gone above and beyond when it comes to taking care of the cast and crew on its suspended shows. They’ve been adamant that as soon as it is safe, whenever that is, we will pick up right where we left off and get Midnight Mass back into production right away. Bly Manor is a different story altogether. We’re in post-production now and on schedule, and have been able to keep post moving by setting up remote editing systems in people’s houses, Flanagan revealed.  I just can’t say what that schedule represents as far as release before Netflix makes their official announcement, but I can say that there isn’t any talk of changing the plan, at least as of yet.

Ghcxuf (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)On Monday morning, NBC announced that it would not broadcast the 2022 Golden Globe Awards in what was seen as a crippling blow to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization that hands out the annual prizes and which has been mired in bad headlines over the past several months. The statement from NBC, which is a part of Rotten Tomatoes parent company NBCUniversal, read: We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023. Though many entertainment insiders have long derided the HFPA for its lack of diversity, unprofessional actions by its members, and the extravagant gifts those members receive, most believed the group was immune to any real reform. However, today’s announcement from NBC, which comes on the heels of fallout from a bombshell LA Times report back in February that detailed decades of self-dealing, unethical actions, homophobia, sexism, and racism by several members, may prove to be the end of the organization as we know it.But why exactly is NBC – along with entertainment powerhouses like Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros., and Tom Cruise(!) – cutting ties with the once-coveted awards show? Here’s a breakdown (Photo by Valerie Macon/Getty Images)First, let’s talk about the organization itself. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a small group of around 90 journalists who cover entertainment for international audiences while based in Southern California. The group, which has been around since 1944, has been the subject of several controversies, criticized for everything from a poor selection of nominated films to blatant bribery. Some say that some of the HFPA’s members have tenuous ties to Hollywood and/or lack journalistic bona fides, and in the Times report, it was confirmed that the group had not had a Black member in over 20 years. The report also noted that several seemingly qualified journalists have been rejected for membership, with one applicant suing the organization just last year, dubbing them an entertainment “cartel.”Five-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais himself once compared the Globes unfavorably to the Oscars in 2012, saying the former was a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker, and more easily bought – allegedly. His comments drew big laughs and big applause on the night because many in the room judged the quip to be all too true.(Photo by NBC/Getty Images)The questionable nominations had also been the talk of the industry since well before the Times report. This year, pop star Sia s controversial film Music earned two nominations despite being blasted by critics to the point that its Tomatometer score stands at just 8%. (Its Audience Score is a similarly paltry 13%.) The assumed justification for this is that, because Sia is very camera shy, the nomination would compel the musician to make herself available for interviews and selfies something the HFPA has become notorious for asking of every celebrity. In 2017 after Tom Ford, the fashion-designer-turned-director of Nocturnal Animals, gifted HFPA members a swag bag of his own branded fragrances, his star Aaron Taylor Johnson was chosen as Best Supporting Actor over eventual Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), a decision that left many scratching their heads and some crying foul. The backlash was so loud the group was told to return the gifts by the HFPA board. In any given year, pundits point to a handful of confounding nominations that are attributable less to the quality of performances and more to the HFPA’s desire to have certain famous faces show up for their red carpets.Still, despite the constant controversy and silly choices, the show was considered a fun watch by most; organizers choices of tables instead of theater seats allowed A-listers to mingle together and perhaps tip a glass with Oprah, Beyoncé, Tom Hanks, or Lady Gaga all while we watched, looking for fun, meme-able moments. It’s worth noting too, that the Globes have also managed a relatively consistent viewership, save its Zoom-filled event this year, which came just weeks after the LA Times piece but was still on par with an Oscars ceremony that boasted full attendance and a red carpet. (Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, as well as HFPA members, had to address the controversy during the show.) All the glitz of the event, plus those ratings, are largely why many Hollywood players have begrudgingly played along, hoping to help their Oscar chances with a win or good moment and boost awards-season ticket sales and ratings for the nominated films and TV shows.(Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images)Studios have been all too happy to participate in pricey private HFPA press conferences, send members glitzy swag (sometimes), host dinners for them, and even fly them out to set visits at luxury locales. Last year, for example, the entire HFPA was flown to Paris to visit the set of Emily in Paris and treated to a stay at a 5-star hotel, which was brought up quickly after the group gave the widely panned Netflix series two nominations. Netflix, however, was not the only or the most egregious offender; in fact, that was how most of the town operated – because the incentives outweighed the downside. That was until now. After the LA Times story broke, the HFPA was quick to say a change was coming. The membership, which had long bristled at adding new members and diversifying its ranks – in order to guarantee predictable results, according to the LA Times – was now under immense pressure to do just that or risk losing its lucrative television contract, the group s primary source of revenue. The HFPA quickly hired a diversity consultant and crisis PR management team to help facilitate the change they announced was coming, first via a statement and again during the live awards show broadcast.(Photo by Carole Bethuel/©Netflix)As the talks happened behind the scenes, the industry s most powerful PR agencies banded together on March 15th with a pointed warning that they would no longer engage with the group unless the changes were substantial, quick, and long-lasting. This was significant, as PR firms typically try to avoid weighing in on such controversies, but as the gatekeepers to the top talent in Hollywood, they hold immeasurable power over whether the HFPA can have those desirable A-listers attend their show. Moreover, the idea of high-powered competitors banding together on anything like this is a clear illustration of how frustrated they are with the situation and how committed they are to fixing the underlying issues. The HFPA replied that they were taking time to consult various stakeholders, including NBC, the awards show s producers, Dick Clark Productions, and industry leaders, and their plans would be announced on May 5.The proposed reforms and the new timeline they released after NBC pulled the TV Contract are as follows:Week of May 3Members meet, consider, and overwhelmingly vote to approve and implement the Board’s plan for transformational changeBoard continues to meet with advocacy groups to develop initiatives to fulfill the HFPA’s commitment to add at least 20 new members by August 2021 and increase membership by 50% in 18 monthsEradicating the new member one-year moratorium on voting; all new members will have all voting rights on day oneBoard and members approve the hiring of Ropes Gray to amend and restate bylaws and other governing documents to implement a member-approved plan for transformational changeWeeks of May 10 and 17Revise and approve new Code of Conduct in consultation with publicists and studiosContinue outreach to potential new member candidatesPublish Code of Conduct and establish hotline for reporting of violationsEngage independent third-party investigator to review and respond promptly to all hotline claimsInterview candidates and engage new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (“DEI”) consultantIdentify and recruit independent, outside professionals and non-board members and form Accountability/Oversight Board (“Advisory Board”) to oversee HFPA Board in implementing a plan for transformational changeInterview executive search firms to commence search for Chief DEI/HR Officer and identification of potential CEO/CFO and other executives to lead HFPAHFPA website to be continuously updated to show progress against plan and to list promised member information (biographies, publications, affiliations, etc.)Weeks of May 24 and 31New DEI Consultant and other outside experts conduct mandatory member training for DEI and sexual harassmentBoard and Advisory Board continue work on the identification of applicants to fulfill commitment to add at least 20 new members by August 2021Grants Officer and subcommittee of members continue work to increase support of internship, mentorship, and scholarship programs for students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in international journalismIdentify and recruit independent, outside professionals for new Credentials Committee, which will oversee new membership application process and reaccreditation of current members based on same criteria as new membersContinue review of committee structure/compensationFirst reading of Bylaw Amendments at General Membership Meeting (“GMM”)Weeks of June 7, 14, and 21Focus groups with members, Advisory Board, and Ropes Gray to review amendments to Bylaws and other governing documentsBoard assesses and evaluates recommendations of Executive Search Firm for new Executive Officer teamForm new Credentials CommitteeAll above workstreams on training, mentorship, and recruitment continueWeek of June 28Second reading of Bylaw Amendments at GMMBallots for voting on Bylaw Amendments mailed to membersImplement new policies on Gifts, Travel, Conflicts of Interest, and Press ConferencesWeek of July 5Members vote on Bylaw Amendments by ballotWeeks of 12 and 19Approved Bylaw Amendments become effectiveNew Officer and Board elections under amended and restated BylawsNew membership process opens per new criteria enacted in amended and restated BylawsAll existing members required to meet same standards as new members for re-accreditation of their membershipWeek of July 26New member process continuesReaccreditation continuesWeek of August 2New members admitted to HFPANew Board elected, including independent members, in accordance with amended and restated BylawsNew CEO/CFO and other Executive Team approved and engaged to manage HFPAExisting Board and Officers resign upon election of New Board and hiring of Executive TeamThe initial proposals were leaked before the deadline without a clear timeline, and the reaction throughout Hollywood was a swift and immediate chorus of “do better.” No word yet on how the new timeline will be received, but the HFPA was clear these measures would be enacted regardless of the 2022 television broadcast. Still, many are unsatisfied primarily because, more than the membership and self-dealing, the HFPA has been accused of shameful bouts of unprofessionalism over the years. Stories from Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, and Brendan Fraser have detailed abuses that many viewed can t be fixed by the initial proposals, which were also considered too slow-moving to address the membership issues.(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/NBC/Getty Images)Inclusivity activist organization Time s Up released a statement that decried the proposed changes as window dressing, while the PR firms 😈😈

For a star under 40, Anna Paquin is exceedingly accomplished: She won a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar at 11 years old for her role in The Piano; starred in one of HBO s biggest hit series, True Blood; and played teen superhero Rogue in four films of the blockbuster X-Men franchise. On her latest series, Pop s Flack, Paquin is responsible for saving celebrity reputations from turmoil, sometimes recovering their stardom from boredom or plateaued intrigue. She plays Robyn, a take-no-s publicist for the biggest crisis-management — sorry, challenge-management — company (aka public relations firm) in England. The lurid scandals and frenzied social media fallout Robyn deals with on Flack feel undeniably timely, but Paquin, who also executive produces the series, promises that Robyn is absolutely not based on her Hollywood experiences with publicists or public relations reps. Creator Oliver Lansley told reporters at the show s Television Critics Association panel in February that Paquin s character is actually an amalgamation of people he s met, not just publicists. All of the stories came from a nugget of truth,  Langsley said of the nightmare scenarios Robyn has to manage, from Freudian slips to botched cosmetics and extramarital affairs.Robyn and her fellow publicists regularly trade personal information for professional security, something Lansley said is quite common in the industry. Flack is all about how celebrity clients trade one scandal for another, conveniently wielding shame and sympathy to protect or regain their status.Ahead of Flack’s premiere, Paquin shared what she admires about Robyn and hinted just how wild the show’s ride will be. But first, she tells us what shows she deems binge-worthy.(Photo by courtesy Pop)What’s appointment viewing for you?Oh, I don’t have any… I don t even know what day or time things are on, but I m presuming it s either when my children are going to bed or when I already would like to be asleep. What’s in your streaming queue?(Photo by Netflix)I like documentaries. The darker the subject matter, the better. I m a big true crime [fan].Are you going to watch new Ted Bundy special on Netflix?I’ve already watched it. It’s fascinating, if you’re into that genre. But I also listen to those podcasts about stuff like that so…Like Dirty John?Oh my god, that was great. But again, I didn t know it was a TV show until I listened to the podcast and I was like, Oh, I feel like there s posters up for some, is it the same thing?  I m a little bit in my mother bubble. What shows are on your DVR?(Photo by Showtime)We are currently watching Escape at Dannemora… We re up to episode five, so if you ve seen the rest of it, don t spoil it.What’s coming soon that you’re excited for?(Photo by Pop)Flack. I’m serious. If I wasn’t in it, this would be a show I would be obsessed with. I mean, that opening scene’s pretty killer, right?Sophie-Marie for Rotten Tomatoes: What drew you to the character of Robyn? What s not to love? I mean, she s talented, smart, troubled and really good at her job — and morally ambiguous in all kinds of ways that I think are very real, raw, and authentic. And she gets some really, incredibly fun, smart, well-written dialogue. It kind of ticks all the boxes for me.What makes her so good at a job that requires her to kind of walk a moral line, or jump right off the moral cliff, so often? She had a really f -d up childhood, you know? I mean, she basically raised her younger sister because their mother was mentally unwell. … You end up finding out more about that as the series goes on. But there s also kind of a fight to survive-ness, like,  I will do whatever I need to do because I don t have a safety net. She s someone who has grown up in a household where mood stability was not a given and the ground rules changed all the time, because that s the nature of living with someone who s an addict or who has mental health issues. So that s not abnormal for her. So, one sister ends up with this sort of perfect, by-the-book family life and [Robyn] ends up [being] someone who isn t really sure who she is without the job of making other people s illusions a reality. 未来还将增加迅刃、岚切和流水法杖,并且优化饮血和反甲与端游更加一致,让大家在享受手游特色的同时还原端游的游戏体验。

Addison Wright’s Hiplet: Because We Can is part of the Scene In Color Film Series, presented by Target, which shines a light on incredible filmmaking talent. As part of the series, three emerging filmmakers will receive mentorship from producer Will Packer, and their films are available to watch on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieClips Indie Channel, Peacock, and the NBC App.They have the “sexy walk;” “the pretzel;” “the dougie;” “the Vivian.” These aren’t 1950s innuendoes. They’re the dance moves performed by a special Chicago-based ballet company. Founded by Homer Hans Bryant, hiplet is a combination of hip-hop and traditional ballet performed to dizzying, intoxicating effect by a collection of incredible local dancers. Director Addison Wright, another Chicago native, decided to make a film about these viral sensations after discovering the troupe on Instagram. His eight-minute documentary short, Hiplet: Because We Can, was an Official Selection at the 2020 South by Southwest Film Festival, later became a Vimeo Staff pick, and is now part of the Scene in Color Film Series. Wright’s film, titled after the dance, fuses together a choreographed music video feel with a precise documentary style for a lively exploration of this new invigorating movement style. Though the performers’ movements speak for themselves — their swaggering strides texture their powerful, beautiful Black forms, mesmerizing the frame with an undaunted spirit — Wright interviews them, too. The ebullient ballerinas explain the pushback they’ve experienced in a classically white-defined world for their unique artistic identity, their varying body types, and their Blackness. In Hiplet, Wright casts an immersive and empathetic lens toward these talented women. He demonstrates a nimbleness in his filmmaking, capturing the balletic patterns of the dancers while oscillating between striking colorful compositions and equally magnetic black-and-white filmed interviews. Hiplet is not just an exhilarating introduction to a new, evolving ballet style, but a perfect launching pad displaying Wright’s fresh, assured voice. Here, Wright talks to Robert Daniels, a Chicago-based Tomatometer-approved Top Critic. Robert Daniels for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you first get into filmmaking?Addison Wright: I grew up during the 90s, so I was glued to the TV watching MTV and BET. I ve always been mesmerized by music videos and by directors like Hype Williams and Spike Jonze, and Little X. So early on I knew I had a passion for it. I went to Simeon High School in Chicago, where I played football all four years. I ended up getting a scholarship to Delaware State University. I played football there, and my major was TV production. I didn t have a camera in high school or anything like that, but once I got to college I realized this was something I wanted to go after. I ended up getting hurt around my junior year in college. So I didn t play football, but the team would have me around so I traveled and filmed practice and the games. When there wasn t any practice or a game, I would borrow the camera and film music videos around campus. That s when I got into learning how to build narratives within music videos. So I was taking some of the stuff that I learned in some of my classes, and applying it to my videos. That s where my passion started.(Photo by Addison Wright)Daniels: Where and when did the idea for Hiplet first form?Wright: I was on Instagram and on my Explore page I saw these Black ballerinas doing ballet a bit differently. So I clicked on it and I heard the music and saw them in the dance studio and thought these girls are dope. I was scrolling up and began seeing them again and again. So I researched online about the Hiplet ballerinas and saw some of the commercials that they were in like Old Navy commercials and Mercedes-Benz and featured in Japan and some other places. Then I saw they were based here in Chicago and I was like, whoa this is a story that needs to be told. Initially the concept was me doing an entire music video of them. I wanted to shoot it in Chicago’s South Shore Cultural Center because that was a white-only establishment a hundred years ago. And I want to place Black girls in this beautiful cultural center, and just let them do their thing in a place they wouldn t have been able to a hundred years ago. But once we got the cost back for how much it was going to be to rent that space, I knew we couldn’t do that.So we ended up finding a gym on the south side, the Grand Ballroom, which is on 64th and Cottage Grove. You won’t even notice it if you drive or walk past, but if you look up you can see the beautiful terracotta. The story grew by me going, at least once a week, to the studio to film the girls and watch them rehearse and practice just to see how they move around and to see their personalities so I would know different angles and areas to pay attention to. Homer, he s the founder of Hiplet, and I were having a casual conversation and he told me how much these girls go through. Whenever they post something online, people are making fun of them but those same people are emulating what they do. It comes from within the dance community. People from different races look at them and see how they aren t doing traditional ballet, so they talk about them. So I decided to give the girls the floor: We ll film them, but we ll also let them talk about the adversity they often face. That s what kinda changed the path of the film being a music video. That s what made me realize how I wanted it to be a short and a documentary, but with the feel of a music video.Daniels: How long was the shoot?Wright: The shoot was about a 12-hour day. We started loading around eight in the morning and we wrapped with the girls around eight o clock at night. It was a bit longer for us, but the girls were there all day. It was a lot of rehearsing. When the girls showed up, they knew what they needed and we knew what we needed to do as far as setting up lights and blocking. Daniels: I want to get back to the blocking. I think what s so great about your film is you can feel the energy of the dancing. How did you get to that point where you got the right angles to bring the live energy onto camera?Wright: My DP, Dan Frantz, and I would go to the studio where girls would be rehearsing and we would film certain parts of the performance. That was a month out before we actually filmed. We would sit down and figure out the best angle for where the camera needed to be and lighting diagrams. We also went to the ballroom and took some pictures. I knew where I wanted to place the girls. I knew some of the angles that I wanted to hit just based off of their choreography. But it was a collaboration between him and me. We were rushing against the clock to get certain things because we only had the location for one day. But my goal was to really capture the energy of the ballerinas. Make sure they re making eye contact. Anytime the camera came around, I made sure that I told them to interact with the camera. If it s near you, look down at the lens, look through it just like you re on stage and somebody makes eye contact with you in a crowd. The camera is the crowd.Daniels: And now your film is part of the Scene in Color Film Series. How did you hear about the opportunity and what drew you to it?Wright: It s funny, I didn t know anything about it until they reached out to me. And I was completely blown away. Even when I talk about it right now, I m still in shock because it s all just surreal. They said they saw the film and they really loved it. And I was like: Me, really? That s dope that they love the film. About three weeks later they gave me the details and I found it incredible. I remember making the film public in February on Vimeo and it ended up becoming a Vimeo staff pick and then went viral. A month after that was when NBC reached out to speak with me.Daniels: How are you feeling about having a producer like Will Packer as a mentor?Wright: It s an incredible feeling having someone who is a powerhouse within the industry and within the Black community as a mentor. Even hearing myself say that, it sounds unreal. Just to be able to have opportunities to pick his brain and to have the opportunity to ask what to do in this situation, in certain situations, or do you think this is a good idea, can only help my career in an extremely positive way. He may be able to give some insight from his experience. He may be able to point me into a direction that may give me more exposure. I m extremely excited to be able to just chat with him.Daniels: What guidance or advice has Will given you so far?Wright: I asked him what s his favorite film that he’s ever done, the one that left him with the most memories. He said Stomp the Yard. In a nutshell, he wanted to do that film to provide inspiration to people. Being able to hear that from him let me know I m doing the right thing. My goal as a filmmaker is to inspire people through the lens. And if it can t change the world, at least I’ll open one person’s eyes. Will also said he enjoyed the film and I was where I was supposed to be. To hear that as an up-and-coming filmmaker, as a Black filmmaker, you know, to hear from Will Packer that I m where I m supposed to be, it s extremely crazy, man. It floored me. That solidified me as a filmmaker in my eyes and in my heart.Daniels: What do you hope people take from Hiplet?Wright: I m born and raised in Chicago, and Chicago always gets a negative light put on us. I want people to be able to see these Black girls on TV, on their phones, and on their computers to see how, number one, beautiful they are; number two, how they re taking ballet in a totally different direction by not changing ballet but by adding a twist to it. I want it to be motivational for Black boys and girls by seeing someone that looks like you, that s doing something that s changing the world of ballet by shaking things up.See more shorts and meet more filmmakers from the Scene in Color Film Series.
