沙巴体育365平台采用百度引擎5(Baidu 4)This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Halloween Kills, Peter Pan Wendy, and Wolfman. This WEEK S TOP STORYBRAD PITT BOARDING BULLET TRAIN FOR JOHN WICK DIRECTOR(Photo by Andrew Cooper/©Columbia Pictures)Brad Pitt has enjoyed steady success throughout his career, even as recently as last year, when his performance in Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood garnered widespread acclaim, but it s been a little while since he appeared in a proper, traditional action film unless, of course, you count his blink-and-you ll-miss-it cameo in Deadpool 2. With that in mind, he s now set to work with the guy who helped re-establish Keanu Reeves as an action star: David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and the aforementioned Deadpool 2). Pitt has signed with Sony Pictures to star in an action thriller called Bullet Train that will be directed by Leitch, whose most recent film was last year s Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 67%). Bullet Train will be an adaptation of the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka and will tell the story of five assassins who find themselves on the same train from Tokyo, which undoubtedly leads to lots of shooting and stabbing and kicking and punching. Because, you know, action.Other Top Headlines1. JUDE LAW IN TALKS FOR CAPTAIN HOOK IN DISNEY S LIVE-ACTION PETER PAN WENDY(Photo by Alex Bailey/©Focus Features)It certainly seems like there have been a lot of live action takes on J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan in recent years, including films as 2003 s Peter Pan (Certified Fresh at 77%), 2015 s Pan (Rotten at 27%), this year s Wendy (Rotten at 37%). One of the companies that has stayed out of the live-action Peter Pan business until this point has actually been the one that would ve seemed the most obvious choice, which is Walt Disney Pictures. Disney s 1953 animated Peter Pan is arguably the play s most famous adaptation, and that film s version of Tinker Bell became an icon for Walt Disney Pictures, used in various opening credit animations over the years. On top of that, Disney is very much in the ongoing process of adapting its most famous animated films into live-action ones. The live-action adaptation of Peter Pan will be called Peter Pan Wendy, and it will be directed by David Lowery, who previously directed the live remake of Pete s Dragon (Certified Fresh at 88%). We don t yet know which young actors will play the title characters (or Tinker Bell, for that matter), but this week, the news broke that Jude Law is in talks with Disney to play the villain, Captain Hook. If he signs on, he will take on a role previously played by the likes of Dustin Hoffman (Hook), Jason Isaacs (Peter Pan), and Hugh Jackman (Pan).2. THE INVISIBLE MAN DIRECTOR ALSO IN TALKS FOR RYAN GOSLING S WOLFMAN (Photo by Saeed Adyani/©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Australia s Leigh Whannell is a producer, director, and screenwriter who got his start collaborating on Saw with future Aquaman director James Wan in a career arc that most recently included Universal Pictures reboot of The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss. That film happened after Universal Pictures scrapped their previous Dark Universe plans for rebooting their classic monsters, which would have included Johnny Depp starring in The Invisible Man and rumors of Dwayne Johnson possibly starring in Wolfman. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic happening just as The Invisible Man was opening in theaters, the film was otherwise a financial success, so Univeral Pictures is moving forward with similar reboots, including Wolfman. Just about a month ago, the news broke that Ryan Gosling was the studio s top choice to star in Wolfman, and it now appears that Gosling has indeed signed on, as Universal Pictures is in talks with Leigh Whannell about writing and directing Wolfman to continue the thread between The Invisible Man and their ambitious werewolf movie. Whannell and Gosling have reportedly wanted to work with each other for some time. 3. OPRAH WINFREY LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP TO ADAPT PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING THE 1619 PROJECT (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Last year, The New York Times Magazine began a new series called The 1619 Project, named after the arrival of the first ship of enslaved Africans to the coast of the colony of Virginia. Producer Oprah Winfrey is now collaborating with Lionsgate and The New York Times on a series of feature films and television projects that will be based on The 1619 Project. Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for The 1619 Project, and she will be a key participant in the projects Oprah Winfrey has planned. It is not yet known which of the true stories documented in The 1619 Project will be adapted as feature films, but the Variety s news item references titles like, America Wasn t a Democracy Until Black Americans Made It One and American Capitalism is Brutal: You Can Trace That to a Plantation. The 1619 Project scope will reportedly include  multiple feature films, TV series, documentaries, and other cross-platform content for a global audience. 4. MAZE RUNNER AND JOJO RABBIT STARS SOUGHT FOR PETER FARRELLY S NEXT FILM(Photo by Dee Cercone, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Before winning an Academy Award for Best Picture for Green Book (Certified Fresh at 77%), director Peter Farrelly was probably best known for comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There s Something About Mary. For his next film, Farrelly is returning to the 1960s setting of Green Book with an adaptation of the non-fiction book The Greatest Beer Run Ever, about a young man who traveled to Vietnam to reunite with friends who were soldiers in the war. The first actor to sign on for The Greatest Beer Run Ever a few weeks ago was Viggo Mortensen, who also starred in Green Book. This week, Mortensen was reportedly joined by Dylan O Brien, one of the stars of MTV s Teen Wolf (who s speculated but not confirmed to be playing the lead role). For the female lead, producers are also reportedly eyeing Jojo Rabbit co-star Thomasin McKenzie, but she s not signed yet.5. TIFFANY HADDISH WILL TRAVEL TO AFRICA TO BE CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN (Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Once a separate Hollywood studio, the former DreamWorks SKG, co-founded by Steven Spielberg, has in recent years been divided a few times over, with the live-action production company now being called Amblin Partners (not to be confused with Spielberg s own Amblin Entertainment). Some of the recent films produced by Amblin Partners have included First Man, Best Picture Oscar-winner Green Book, and ten-time Academy Award nominee 1917. Amblin Partners is now developing a comedy for Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, Night School) called Homecoming Queen to be written by Raamla Mohamed, a TV writer who s worked on Scandal and Little Fires Everywhere. Haddish will star in and also produce Homecoming Queen, which is reportedly inspired by Haddish s own experience traveling to Africa thinking she was royalty, only to find out that that designation means something completely different there. Other upcoming movies that share an African royalty theme include Eddie Murphy s sequel Coming 2 America (12/18/2020) and Marvel s Black Panther II (5/6/2022).6. JANELLE MONAE S ACTIVELY PETITIONING TO BE MARVEL S STORM IN X-MEN REBOOT (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Most sites reporting on movie development news try to avoid stories that hew too close to rumors, but every once in a while, a big enough star will actively campaign for a role that it will inevitably become a story, even if there s no deal in negotiation. The most recent example of this came just this week from singer and actress Janelle Monáe (Moonlight, Hidden Figures), whose horror film Antebellum is among those that would have originally been released in theaters if not for the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent interview, Monáe revealed that one of the roles she hopes to take on is the mutant superhero Storm of Marvel s X-Men, who has previously been played in film by both Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp (in X-Men: Apocalypse). Monáe said she brought it up while talking to director Ryan Coogler (currently working on Black Panther II, scheduled for 5/6/2022). It s worth noting that Marvel Studios has not yet announced when any o

Despite the big name drop last week, The Mandalorian once again swerved from its seeming direction to deliver an action-packed side story. Of course, even in avoiding a major tease, it shed some light on one of the series core mysteries. Let s take a look at this week s episode and what it means for Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), the Imperial Remnant, and the New Republic.Last Week: Din Djarin Met the Nite Owls(Photo by Disney+/Lucasfilm Ltd.)Djarin and his ward made their way in Chapter 11 to the estuary moon of Trask, where the Frog Couple promised him he could find a Mandalorian covert. Instead of a camp, he found Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), heir apparent to the seat of Mandalore, and her elite Nite Owls. After assisting them in commandeering an Imperial ship fulled with Mandalorian weapons, Kryze told Djarin of a Jedi named Ahsoka Tano taking shelter on the planet Corvus. Though his ship was badly damaged in the trip to Trask, he continued on his quest.A Reunion Kicks Off a New Mission on The Mandalorian(Photo by Disney+/Lucasfilm Ltd.)Realizing the Razor Crest will never make the trip to Corvus, Djarin diverts to Nevarro — the planet where his association with the Child began — for repairs. There, he finds Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Cara Dune (Gina Carano) have cleaned up the spaceport enough for a lively population of settlers to plant roots. The cantina, for example, now houses the local school.Leaving the Child at the school, Djarin, Karga, Dune, and Mythrol (Horatio Sanz) — the first bounty we saw Djarin collect on the show — set out for an Imperial base outside the green zone Karga carved out on the planet. The plan is simple: dispatch the few remaining Imps and blow up the base.Infiltrating the base goes easily enough, as does overloading its power source. But on the way out, the team discovers Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) was using the vial of blood he extracted from the Child to experiment on some unfortunate test subjects. Djarin also learns Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) is still alive.Djarin jetpacks back to town while the rest flee in an Imperial recon transport. After a chase with some speeder bikes and TIE fighters, a repaired Razor Crest dispatches the remaining Imp forces and the base explodes.Unfortunately, one of Karga s men still works for Gideon and planted a tracker on the Razor Crest. The Midi-chlorians Still Matter(Photo by Disney+/Lucasfilm Ltd.)In the hologram Mythrol recovered at the base, Dr. Pershing mentioned the high M-count of the blood he extracted from the Child. The obvious implication here is a word some Star Wars fans dread: Midi-chlorians.First mentioned in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Midi-chlorians are described as microscopic companion organisms residing in the cells of all living beings. According to Qui-Gon Jinn, these tiny creatures connect everyone to the Force. Also, it seems, the higher concentration of Midi-chlorians in a being s bloodstream will result in a greater ability to use the Force. It is a biological determinant to the mysticism of the Jedi older fans felt cheapened the magic of Star Wars. The film also told us Jedi Master Yoda and Anakin Skywalker had the highest Midi-chlorians counts recorded by the Jedi Order. While this information may not be public to all of the galaxy, it is clear Gideon — a former intelligence agent — was aware of Midi-chlorians counts and, presumably, the likelihood of anyone from Yoda s species having strong connection to the Force. And based on Pershing s holo-message, we gather Gideon is trying to create counterfeit Force-users via blood transfusion. Many suspected this was the case during the first season, but confirmation of this endeavor leads to many questions.(Photo by Disney+/Lucasfilm Ltd.)Before we ask those questions, though, we need to talk about Karga and Dune. The pair have done a find job turning the Nevarro settlement from a hive of scum and villainy to a lively but safe township. The state of its streets suggest some time has passed since Gideon raided the cantina, but it also suggests just how effective the pair became afterward. Karga has reclaimed the magistrate title he seemingly abandoned after the fall of the Empire, while Dune has been deputized as the local marshal. They also seem happy in these roles.Well, Karga is happy, anyway. Dune s conversation with Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) suggests she may tire of life on Nevarro like she tired of working security for New Republic diplomats. Teva left behind a badge, but her ambivalence toward it — and him — means there is a story there to tell.Of course, we should acknowledge many former fans of the character, and Carano herself, would rather leave that story untold. Vanity Fair released an article about the actor s recent struggles on social media and how it has left a lot of people burned. The timing of the article is clearly no accident as Dune made her return appearance this week.Cara Dune s image problems in our reality aside, we would like to see more of the New Republic. As Karga notes, their handling of the Outer Rim is not popular, as it is more aggressive than the Old Republic s policies toward remote worlds — and perhaps as futile as the Empire s attempt to tame those systems. We also know it is a doomed government thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the Aftermath novel series, but its deficiencies as a governing body deserved to be dramatized, either in The Mandalorian or some subsequent Star Wars show.Meanwhile, it came as no surprise to see the show steer away from Ahsoka Tano. Like the Boba Fett tease in the season opener, the program — and principal writer Jon Favreau — delights in defying expectations and delaying payoffs like Ahsoka s live-action debut. Although, next week s episode is reportedly called The Jedi, so we ll hold off on any other comments about Favreau s pace until then. That said, there is an elegance in revealing part of Gideon s plan here at the season s mid-point. He needs the Child because of the Force, but his greater need for Force-abilities remains in the shadows. Although, we imagine all that Dark Trooper–esque armor he s hoarding on his ship might have something to do with it.Questions for the New Era(Photo by Disney+/Lucasfilm Ltd.)Gideon s plan forms the basis for most of our questions this week as it is, by far, the most intriguing development. Is Gideon Aligned With Other Remnants? Once his aide referred to their spy being rewarded in the new era, we wondered if Gideon is allied with the Imperial Remnants who will eventually become the First Order. According to other Star Wars media, the First Order was formed by remnants who retreated to the Unknown Regions sometime after the Battle of Jakku. That battle took place four years prior to the events of The Mandalorian. It is possible Gideon is doing their dirty work on the Outer Rim, but it is equally possible he is trying to set himself up as a new Emperor. Is Gideon Assisting the Creation of Snoke? Considering Snoke s origins were never definitely outlined in the Sequel Trilogy, there is room here to give him a more interesting backstory. We know he was a strandcast clone created on Exegol as part of Sheev Palpatine s long-term goal to retake the galaxy. But as strandcasting does not necessarily lead to Force-sensitive clones, Palpatine s underlings may have needed to discover a way to inject Midi-chlorian-rich blood into the Snoke construct, who is apparently already active by the time of The Mandalorian. As it happens, Snoke would later tell Ben Solo (Adam Driver) he was not born as Snoke, but became the enigmatic Force-sensitive. If Gideon is involved with this aspect of the Sith Lord s grand design, is he in direct contact with Palpatine? What Is the New Republic s Interest in the Outer Rim? The Empire tried to subjugate the region, but the Old Republic more or less abandoned it. Why is the New Republic trying so hard to present itself as the lawful government to worlds less concerned with galactic politics? Is it a favor to the New Republic s favorite Tatooine farmboy or are they worried it is a haven for Imperial loyalists? The latter seems likely considering the Imperial base still in operation on Nevarro, but something brought the Republic out there before Djarin carved a path of destruction across the far-flung reaches of the galaxy. On an Apple device? (Photo by ©Galaxy International Releasing, ©20th Century Fox Film Corp., ©Lionsgate, ©United Artists, Everett Collection)In October 2004, a .2 million-budgeted R-rated horror film starring Danny Glover and Cary Elwes was released into theaters and immediately established a cult following, thanks to its gruesome creativity and shocking finale. Directed by James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring) and written by Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, The Invisible Man), Saw was a smash hit that pulled in 4 million worldwide, made us all wary of puppets on tricycles, and spawned seven Rotten sequels that turned off increasingly more critics even as it delighted audiences, who in turn helped the eight films collect 0 million domestically and 2 million worldwide. With the upcoming release of Spiral: From the Book of Saw, we wanted to know which long-running horror franchises are the best, statistically speaking. We pulled the data on horror franchises that have at least five theatrically released films (Sorry Evil Dead and Scream, you re out) and came up with 16 competitors. We counted sequels, remakes, reboots and prequels as part of each franchise, and sadly, we had to leave a few popular ones out because they didn’t have reliable box office or Tomatometer data. All of the 16 franchises were ranked in each of the six categories below. The winner was the franchise who had the lowest total score (think closest to the #1 spot) from the six categories. The lowest possible score would be 6 (if a film placed first in every category), and the highest would be 96 (if it placed last in every category). Here s what we looked at:Tomatometer AverageAudience Score AverageDomestic Box Office (adjusted for inflation)Best Overall Movie in Each Franchise (Tomatometer/Audience Score Average)Sequel Tomatometer AverageSequel Audience Score AverageWithout further ado, let s dive into the numbers and see which Horror Franchise is the bloody best.10. Halloween(Photo by ©Galaxy International Releasing courtesy Everett Collection)Number of films: 11Tomatometer Avg: 37.2%Audience Score Avg: 50.3%Domestic Box Office: millionSequel Tomatometer Avg: 30.5%Sequel Audience Score Avg: 46.5%Best Film: Halloween (1978) 92.5%Seeing the Halloween franchise at #10 certainly doesn’t feel right, as it’s been such an important part of the horror landscape for 40-plus years. Whether it’s John Carpenter’s instantly recognizable score or the William Shatner mask (or masks; there have been several variations) that was spray painted white, the majority of the cinema-going public possesses at least a superficial knowledge of the long-running series. The franchise has given us Michael “The Shape” Myers, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), and about 48 timelines thanks to retconned sequels, remakes, and reboots that brought Laurie Strode back to life, and somehow rendered the underappreciated Halloween H20: 20 Years Later non-canon.However, only Halloween (1978) and Halloween (2018) have Fresh Tomatometer scores, while the other nine films that make up the franchise are Rotten. It also doesn’t help that Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, Halloween: Resurrection, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers all score below 15%. The saving grace for the franchise is John Carpenter s iconic 1978 original, which has a combined Tomatometer/Audience score of 92.5%. It’s an excellent champion for the franchise, and it’s the reason why it cracked the top 10.Make sure to check out the Rotten Tomatoes Versus episode that pits Halloween (2018) up against Halloween: H20 20 Years Later (1998). The correct winner is crowned the champion.9. Predator(Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Number of films: 6Tomatometer Avg: 40.1%Audience Score Avg: 47.5%Domestic Box Office:  millionSequel Tomatometer Avg: 32%Sequel Audience Score Avg: 39.6%Best Film: Predator (1987) 85%In 1987, the John Mctiernan-directed Predator introduced the world to a Yautja (aka the Predator) hunter who stalks and murders an overmatched group of muscular heroes led by Arnold Schwarzenegger in its quest to bring home some sweet human bone trophies. The film leaned heavily into the action genre for thrills, but they also feature an alien monster who rips spines from human bodies, skins them, and hangs them upside down for all to see. Created by Stan Winston, the predator became instantly iconic, and it was far too cool to limit to just one appearance. The problem is, with sequels come diminishing returns, and the Predator movies have been hit or miss since 1987, with only 2010’s Predators, the Robert Rodriguez-produced sequel, achieving a Fresh Tomatometer score at 65%.There is fun to be had in the series, though. Watching Danny Glover battle a one-armed monster aboard its ship in Predator 2 was a world-expanding delight, and seeing Sanaa Lathan become an honorary Yautja in Alien vs. Predator was amazing. Also, Predators features Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershala Ali, Alice Braga, and Laurence Fishburne, which is pretty cool, if you ask us.8. Saw(Photo by Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)Number of films: 8 (not counting Spiral)Tomatometer Avg: 28.5%Audience Score Avg: 64.1%Domestic Box Office:  millionSequel Tomatometer Avg: 25.4%Sequel Audience Score Avg: 61.2%Best Film: Saw (2004) 67%Despite not having a single film with a Fresh score, the Saw franchise guaranteed itself a spot in this list with a solid audience score average of 64%, which had it ranked behind only the Hannibal and Underworld franchises. One of the neat legacies of this franchise is that it has an average domestic box office average of million (8th highest average of the 16 franchises) on an average budget of million. It’s a critic-proof property that tells a wildly inter-connected story that has kept the saws spinning since 2004. It’s noteworthy that the film’s main antagonist John Kramer (Tobin Bell), was killed in Saw III (sorry if that s a spoiler, but it s been 15 years), and the following films manage to continue his legacy while introducing new villains who all make sense, more or less, in the overarching plot. Check out the timeline; it s a wild web of murderers, victims, and surprise villains who all belong in the world because of John Kramer’s knack for planning. It’s like he saw it all coming Note: This ranking was compiled before the release of Spiral, so it s difficult to say where the franchise would end up if we took its latest chapter into consideration.7. Final Destination(Photo by Doane Gregory/©Warner Bros.)Number of films: 5Tomatometer Avg: 43.2%Audience Score Avg: 54%Domestic Box Office:  millionSequel Tomatometer Avg: 45.2%Sequel Audience Score Avg: 50.5%Best Film: Final Destination 5 (2011) 62%What makes the Final Destination franchise unique is that Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, and Final Destination 5 all have higher Tomatometer scores than the original Final Destination, with 5, the final Final Destination, actually earning the highest score of all. To be fair, Final Destination only has a 35% Tomatometer score, but it’s a rare occurrence in the horror world when sequels outshine the original. That said, you can’t bring up the franchise without mentioning that it has one of the most iconic horror moments of the 21st century: The opening freeway scene in Final Destination 2, which involves bouncing logs and exploding innards, is one of the most memorable horror movie moments in recent memory. You know the scene is effective because it made many travelers wary of driving anywhere near a logging truck. The franchise also ended on a high note as Final Destination 5 managed to tie all the films together while featuring a bone-crunching gymnastics-themed death, proving that horror franchises can absolutely still find ways to be creative even in their later years.6. Child s Play(Photo by Everett Collection)Number of films: 8Tomatometer Avg: 54.3%Audience Score Avg: 48.2%Domestic Box Office:  millionSequel Tomatometer Avg: 52%Sequel Audience Score Avg: 46.1%Best Film: Child s Play (1988) 67%You wouldn t think a franchise about a murderous, catchphrase-spouting doll would boast a nearly Fresh Tomatometer average of 54.3%. However, under the watchful eye of writer/director Don Mancini, the Child s Play/Chucky movies have enjoyed something of a renaissance since 2

8.14.4 0月喜迎(Photo by David Giesbrecht/FOX)This week s biggest TV news comes from the five main broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and The CW — which debuted their fall TV schedules for advertisers in New York City all week long. We rounded up the news from each network in the order of this week’s presentation, along with when you’ll be able to watch each of them. Find out what nights your DVR will be getting the biggest workout in our roundup below, watch some of the trailers for the new series, and stick around for a new trailer for His Dark Materials from HBO and some major casting news at the end.TOP STORY: Fall TV PreviewNews from the New York UpfrontsFollowing Disney’s acquisition of Fox and many of the company’s assets — but not the Fox network — the broadcast network is having a rebuilding year. The fall will see the debut of football and wrestling, along with the premieres of existing hits including 9-1-1, the final season of Empire, The Resident, the second season of reality hit The Masked Singer, and, of course, The Simpsons. The network’s three new shows for the fall include Prodigal Son, about the son of a notorious convicted serial killer who has made hunting murderers his life’s work (and starring The Walking Dead’s Tom Payne and Masters of Sex’s Michael Sheen); Not Just Me, about a woman who discovers that her fertility doctor father used his own sperm to conceive more than a hundred children, including two new sisters (starring Brittany Snow and Timothy Hutton); and Bless the Harts, an animated series about a hard-working Southern family and featuring voices from Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Ike Barinholtz, and Jillian Bell, among others.Fox is holding several of its hit series for midseason (when football and baseball will be finished), including The Orville and Last Man Standing. It will also debut a 9-1-1 spin-off set in Texas and starring Rob Lowe, the cop drama Deputy starring Stephen Dorff, the soapy drama Filthy Rich starring Kim Catrall, and the artificial intelligence–themed drama NeXt starring John Slattery. New comedies include sitcom Outmatched, about average parents raising genius children, and two animated series: Duncanville and The Great North.NBC is bringing back many of its biggest series too, including The Voice, This Is Us, and all of the Chicago procedurals. There are also new seasons of New Amsterdam, The Blacklist, and the record-breaking 21st season of Law Order: Special Victims Unit. (It’s now the longest-running live-action prime time series in history.) The fall’s new drama is Bluff City Law, about a father-daughter lawyer duo in Memphis. On the comedy side, Perfect Harmony, which stars Bradley Whitford as a former Princeton music professor who becomes the director of a small-town church choir, and Sunnyside, starring Kal Penn as a disgraced New York City councilman who becomes a champion for a group of people attempting to become American citizens, join Superstore and The Good Place on the network’s Thursday night lineup. At midseason, the network will bring back comedies Will Grace and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and dramas Manifest, Blindspot, and Good Girls. Reality series America’s Got Talent (and spin off The Champions), Ellen’s Game of Games, Little Big Shots, World of Dance, and American Ninja Warrior will also return in the new year. New shows debuting in 2020 include tearjerking drama Council of Dads, crime procedural Lincoln (based on the book The Bone Collector), musical Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, comedy Indebted, and sitcom The Kenan Show (yes, starring Saturday Night Live’s longest-tenured cast member, Kenan Thompson).Another network that’s sticking with its existing properties is ABC, which will premiere new seasons of Dancing With the Stars, The Good Doctor, The Conners, Bless This Mess, Black-ish, The Goldbergs, Schooled, Modern Family, Single Parents, Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, How to Get Away With Murder, American Housewife, Fresh Off the Boat, and America’s Funniest Home Videos in the fall.New scripted series debuting in the fall include the drama Emergence, about a cop who takes in a mysterious little girl she finds at a crime scene only to become embroiled in a conspiracy that leads back to the girl’s unknown identity; Stumptown, about a military-veteran private investigator who clashes with criminals and cops, based on the graphic novel of the same name and starring the MCU s Agent Maria Hill Cobie Smulders; and Mixed-ish, a Black-ish spin-off about the childhood of Tracee Ellis Ross’ Bow. Tiffany Haddish will also head up a rebooted version of the classic variety show Kids Say the Darndest Things. At midseason, ABC will bring back American Idol, The Bachelor, Shark Tank, The Rookie, Station 19, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and debut the dramas The Baker and the Beauty, about a Cuban baker in Miami who is thrust into the spotlight when he falls in love with an international superstar fashion mogul, and For Life, about a prisoner who becomes a lawyer and litigates cases for other inmates while fighting his own wrongful conviction and life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit (inspired by the real life of Isaac Wright Jr.). Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Why did you want to make a horror film your first time out? You ve done comedy and drama, but this is not necessarily a genre that you ve done a ton of previous work in. So why horror first?Dave Franco: I wanted my directorial debut to be a horror film for a couple of reasons. As a viewer, there s nothing I enjoy more than a smart genre film. You know, I think about this young group of genre filmmakers that I mentioned in my top five favorite films, people like David Robert Mitchell, Ari Aster, Jeremy Saulnier, Amy Seimetz, people who are doing projects that are very artful and just happen to be scary too. And I think there s a general stigma against horror films where people tend to look down on them and write them off as being schlocky. But I think they have just as much artistic merit as any serious drama out there. There were also logistical reasons. I could make it with a small cast and crew and make it relatively cheap as long as we primarily shot in a single location. And the horror genre tends to deal with extreme scenarios and emotions, so I was able to have fun with the overall style. I could push boundaries, take risks, and make bold choices that would ultimately make the film feel unique to me.You ve worked with a lot of directors in your career. Did you hit any of them up for advice? Franco: I basically reached out to most of the directors I ve worked with to pick their brains before I started. I also reached out to the directors I ve really been inspired by over the years, or Seth Rogen and his crew, Barry Jenkins, my brother, obviously. They all create a very comfortable environment on set where they encourage everyone to voice their opinion if they think it will help the film. There are no egos on their sets, and the main rule is the best idea wins no matter who it s coming from. That creates a warm environment where everyone feels heard, and it s very collaborative. I tried to keep that going for The Rental. You ve acted with your wife, Alison Brie, before, but I m just curious, did you find it worse to torture her through this movie or better? Was she mad at you at the end of the day?Franco: [Laughs] Weirdly enough, we were both kind of indifferent to the torture. In a way, it was fun, because in horror movies, you get to have fun and let loose, show your range and just go crazy. I saw how much Alison was enjoying being a part of this genre that she s not typically in, and her enjoyment was infectious. So I was giddy when we were filming the scenes of carnage that involved her.You also co-wrote the screenplay. Was there something you wrote as the writer that you were kicking yourself for writing as the director? Because there s always something.Franco: The cliff sequence was challenging to film it was really dangerous. You know, there s a lot of wirework. We had so many extensive conversations about the storyboard or the sequence. We were constantly just making sure that we can get everything we needed creatively while keeping everyone safe. We ended up getting lucky and somehow pulled it off in one day. I look back at that sequence and really can t process how we accomplished it, but I m proud of it. And I also hate myself for writing it.The Rental is available to rent or buy digitally now.
Adjusted Score: -1% Critics Consensus: Real-world and supernatural horrors collide in Infamy, an exceptionally well-crafted ghost story that creeps under the skin and stays there.

(Photo by © IFC Midnight)Female creators are at the cutting edge of modern horror, turning out some of its most inspired, and twisted, offerings. Babadook director Jennifer Kent is one big name you might have heard of, but she s at the crest of a huge wave of talent that s likely to be splattering multiplexes with blood for decades to come.Joining them is actor-turned-writer Kristen Ruhlin, who spoke recently with Rotten Tomatoes about what inspired her to move into the bloody world of horror. It s a tale many female actors and writers tell: she wasn t finding stories that spoke to her. One of my close friends suggested I just write my own thing and stop relying on other people,” she said. The result is Welcome to Mercy, out in limited release November 2, which draws on her religious upbringing to craft a hair-raising tale of abduction and the occult, and one with a specifically female focus. Ruhlin plays Madeline, a young single mother stricken with stigmata, sent to a remote convent where nothing is what it seems.  The correlation between religion and horror goes back to…people searching for answers to things that we can t explain, and that can be itself frightening. As Ruhlin s movie hits theaters in limited release, and film media turns its focus on women in the horror genre, we ve picked five films to watch from female horror filmmakers who are absolutely slaying right now.
