Which decade from the last 40 years had the fetchest high school movies? (We’re going to make this happen.) That’s what we’re deciding in a very special episode of Vs. that’s slowly walking down the stairs armed with warm apple pies, blaring boom boxes, and an occasional break of the fourth wall. How exactly, though, can you compare a decade like the 1980s, which gave us everything from Say Anything… to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to a decade like the 2010s, with its whip-smart Lady Bird and adventurous Dope? RT Contributing Editor Mark Ellis has a way… four ways in fact. In this episode of Vs. he compares each decade’s high-school movie output based on Tomatometer and Audience Scores, box office performance, memorable moments and characters, and one wild card round to declare which 10-year stretch is the movies’ equivalent to your high school’s Prom King, Valedictorian, or that ultimate hero: The Person Dating a College Guy.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.沙巴体育365真人(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Lucasfilm Ltd./Courtesy Everett Collection)What do the movies with the highest domestic box office totals for each year since 2010 have in common? None of them have Rotten Tomatometer scores – and they all made over 0 million. In fact, when averaged together, these 10 Fresh blockbusters – Toy Story 3, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, Finding Dory, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, Black Panther, and Avengers: Endgame – have a super-Fresh Tomatometer average of 90.3%.Currently, the highest domestic (and worldwide) grossing film of 2019 is the 94% Tomatometer-rated Avengers: Endgame,  which has earned a mind-snapping total of 8 million domestically and over billion worldwide. By crossing the billion milestone, Avengers: Endgame has joined Titanic, Avatar, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War in the exclusive “ Billion Club.” What do these movies have in common? Yep, you guessed it again: They’re all Fresh.Recommended: The 50 Highest-Grossing Movies of All TimeRecommended: All 44 Billion-Dollar Movies, Ranked by TomatometerRecommended: 2019 Holiday Box Office PreviewThe success of these Fresh films got us thinking: Are these blockbuster movies Fresh anomalies, or do Fresh movies make more money at the box office generally? Is there a relationship between Tomatometer score and box office performance? (And we stress: a relationship, and not necessarily a causal one; so many factors contribute to box office performance.) To aid us in our data deep dive, we pulled the Tomatometer and domestic box office data for the 1,404 movies that received wide theatrical domestic releases (600-plus screens) since 2010. Here’s what we found…*The box office results have been adjusted for inflation. All calculations accurate as of November 28, 2019.MOVIES WITH FRESH TOMATOMETER SCORES MAKE MORE MONEY THAN ROTTEN MOVIES – ON AVERAGE(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marel Studios)Fresh Movies since 2010: Inflated Domestic Average of 4 millionRotten Movies since 2010: Inflated Domestic Average of millionWhen it comes to Tomatometer and domestic box office results, Fresh movies, on average, make more money than Rotten movies. It may sound obvious – good films draw more people to the theater! – and you are probably thinking, “I could’ve told you that,” but the difference is quite startling. The 1 million average for the 636 Fresh movies in the sample is nearly double the million average of the 799 Rotten films. Even if you removed Disney brands Marvel and Pixar, which produce some of the most critically beloved blockbusters, such as Black Panther, Toy Story 4, and Avengers: Endgame, the average for Fresh films since 2010 is still a respectable million.THE FRESHER THE MOVIE, THE BIGGER THE BOX OFFICE BOUNTYIt’s also worth noting that the more Fresh a movie is, the better it is likely to do at the box office, and the more Rotten it is, the worse it is likely to perform. Movies with a 0-20% Tomatometer score had an average domestic box office of million; movies with 80-100% Tomatometer scores averaged 3 million. However, not every Fresh movie makes money: 58 of the 187 (or 42%) wide-release movies that made under million at the box office since 2010 are Fresh. A Fresh rating doesn’t guarantee massive success, and Fresh movies like Green Room and The Raid 2 don’t automatically collect 0 million dollars domestically.MOVIES WITH HIGHER TOMATOMETER SCORES HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF CLEARING 0 MILLION(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Some 323 movies have made over 0 million at the domestic box office since 2010. Of those, 219 (68%) have Fresh Tomatometer scores, which means the odds of a movie making more than 0 million increase when it receives a Fresh Tomatometer score. Only 5% of movies with a 0-10% Tomatometer score (or 3 of the 62 movies) – namely Grown Ups 2, The Last Airbender, and Little Fockers – made over 0 million. On the other hand, 41% of the movies with a score above 90% (or 68 of the 164 movies) – such as Spy, Girl’s Trip, and Crazy Rich Asians – cleared the 0 million milestone. That 41% may not seem like a lot, but it’s a big jump over the movies in the 70-80% range, where 33% of the movies broke 0 million.Below is a breakdown of Tomatometer ranges and the average amount of money the movies in them make.0-10% Movies: million10-20% Movies: million20-30% Movies: million30-40% Movies: million40-50% Movies: million50-60% Movies: million60-70% Movies: million70-80% Movies: 0 million80-90% Movies: million90-100% Movies: 2 million

3. 激战团竞模式
King of the Crop: Shazam! Repeats, but Its Final Estimate Falls(Photo by Warner Bros.)As stated last week, Shazam is more DC’s Ant-Man than their Guardians of the Galaxy. To maintain the kind of momentum that would keep it in the universe of Paul Rudd’s character financially, it was hoping for around a 45% drop for its second weekend. Instead it fell 53%. Still good enough to beat this week’s challengers handily, but its hopes of reaching 0 million and beyond fell a bit. Among comic book adaptations to earn between -100 million after ten days, Shazam! joins the company of X-Men, X-Men: First Class, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Incredible Hulk, Batman Returns, The Wolverine, and Wanted. Batman Returns is the high bar with a 2 million final tally, while the four films surrounding it on that list grossed between 1-135 million. Shazam!’s second weekend (.1 million) was higher than all of those films except for Batman Returns (.4 million) but its final estimate is now in the 0 million range. Shazam! has grossed over 1 million worldwide to date.Rotten Returns: Laika Is Failed Again, but Not By Critics(Photo by Annapurna Pictures)This story is either sad or infuriating maybe both, depending on who you ask. Ask critics which animated studio they would rather see put out more film – Illumination or Laika – and they re likely to say Laika every day and twice on Sunday. Laika’s output has included Kubo and the Two Strings (97%), Coraline (90%), ParaNorman (87%), Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (83%), and The Boxtrolls (76%), all of which are Certified Fresh. Yet, since Coraline in 2009, each successive Laika film has grossed less than the last from Coraline’s million down to Kubo’s .Laika jumped ship from Focus Features, a studio whose Laika projects rank as four of the top 12 grossers in their history. Now they put themselves in the hands of Annapurna, who this February partnered with MGM and Orion to release films under the banner of United Artists Releasing. Missing Link (89%) is their first effort, and they opened it to .8 million. In 3,413 theaters. That is a lower per-theater-average (,712) than Matthew McConaughey’s Serenity (,724). It is a worse average than Focus Features got for Neil Jordan’s Greta (,859). Focus opened Ratchet Clank to .8 million for Pete’s sake. While UA Releasing has some high profile remakes and sequels on the horizon (Child’s Play, Bill Ted Face the Music, Bond 25), this is a really disconcerting start. Especially for the animated company, which deserves better. The Top 10 and Beyond: Hellboy Hits Bottom with Critics and Audiences(Photo by Summit Entertainment)Another film that could have gone into the “Rotten Returns” section was the reboot of Hellboy. From Sony to Universal to Lionsgate, no studio has been able to make this character a thing. Despite two efforts from Gullermo del Toro, both 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army were financial failures, albeit ones with PG-13 ratings. The new R-rated Hellboy may not be family-friendly, but it wasn’t critic-friendly either. Garnering just a 15% on the Tomatometer, Hellboy is one of the worst-reviewed wide releases of 2019, ahead of only A Madea Family Funeral (13%), Replicas (10%), and this week’s release of After (13%), which Aviron opened in 2,138 theaters to bigger numbers than Missing Link (.2 million).Back to Hellboy, though. It continues Lionsgate’s history of lackluster returns for comic book adaptations. Red was their biggest success, opening to .7 million and finishing with .3 million. Its sequel was not as well-received, with lines of and .8 million. Kick-Ass was .8 and million. Hellboy could not even reach their PG-13 Thomas Jane Punisher film, which opened to .8 million just two weeks after del Toro s Hellboy opened to .1 milion in 2004. The Punisher finished with just .8 million. Neil Marshall’s million production of Hellboy may not even make it to million domestic, which is less than Hellboy II’s opening weekend alone of .5 million.Disney’s Dumbo is also headed for a rough landing. The live-action version of their 1941 classic is up to just .9 million after 17 days. That puts it in league with Apollo 13, Borat, Home Alone 2, The World is Not Enough, District 9, Blades of Glory, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Fifty Shades Freed, Superbad, Doctor Dolittle, The Fugitive; films between -91 million in the same period. Among that crop, only Fifty Shades Freed made less (.1 million) in its third weekend than Dumbo (.1 million). That is putting Tim Burton’s 0 million production somewhere between 0-110 million. With only 6 million worldwide, the film could end up being another 0+ million loser for Disney. Fortunately for them, not only is Avengers: Endgame on the horizon, but Captain Marvel still has the 21st best total ever after 38 days with 5 million, and with .064 billion worldwide, it s now the 28th highest-grossing film ever.(Photo by Paramount Pictures)The new Pet Sematary adaptation is following the path suggested in last week’s column. With a 59% drop in its second weekend to million, the film is now in danger of coming up short of the .4 million of the 1989 film. The 2019 version is in league with other horror films like The Omen (2006), Evil Dead (2013), Gothika, White Noise, Dracula Untold, Happy Death Day, and The Cell – each of which had between -42 million after ten days of release, and only The Cell and Gothika made more than .4 million. With The Curse of La Llorona set to take a chunk of the horror fans away from a film that dropped from 82% on the Tomatometer after its closing night SXSW premiere to 58% by the end of its first weekend, an under million haul next weekend could seal its fate in missing the 1989 goal. Nevertheless, it s sill on pace to turn a profit for Paramount.Doing better with horror fans is Jordan Peele’s Us, which is over 3 million, officially passing last year’s Blumhouse production of Halloween. The film is still million ahead of last year’s A Quiet Place after 24 days, but it has fallen behind its fourth weekend take (-to-.9 million.) That is also less than Get Out’s fourth weekend (.4 million), though Us is still million ahead of the pace of Peele’s debut. Us looks to land somewhere in the 0 million range. Universal also managed to open Little this weekend ahead of Hellboy. Its .4 million opening is higher than their Jason Bateman/Ryan Reynolds body-switch film, The Change-Up, which started with .5 million and finished with million. This Time Last Year: Dwayne Johnson Led with Another Video Game Adaptation(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The video game adaptation, Rampage with Dwayne Johnson led the way with .7 million, just barely beating the second weekend of A Quiet Place, which finished with .9 million to just pass the 0 million mark in its 10th day of release. Opening in third was Blumhouse horror, Truth or Dare, with .6 million and Roadside’s most successful film to date, the song origin tale of I Can Only Imagine, passed million in total sales. The Top Ten films grossed 1.79 million and averaged 66.8% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top Ten grossed an estimated 1.45 and averaged 58.5%On the Vine: Horror and Sci-Fi Bring the Calm before the Avengers Storm(Photo by New Line Cinema)Another horror film tries to separate fans from their money. This time it is The Curse of La Llorona, part of The Conjuring universe, about the infamous weeping woman who steals children. Its premiere at SXSW this year was not as well received as Pet Sematary, as it owns a 44% on the Tomatometer at the moment. (Sematary’s score dropped 20% from its SXSW premiere.) Also look out for 2018 SXSW premiere, Fast Color, from director Julia Hart and co-writer/producer Jordan Horowitz, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a woman with powers in a bleak future. The Full Top 10: April 5-7Shazam! 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
The day after Game of Thrones aired one of its longest episodes ever — the super-sized, near-feature-length epic “The Last of the Starks” — SundanceTV premiered a series with episodes that clock in at a tidy 10 minutes each.Ten-episode series State of the Union stars Rosamund Pike and Chris O’Dowd as a married couple going through a rough patch after a “spot of infidelity.” Each episode follows the pair in real-time as they meet in a pub before going across the street to marital counselling, discussing how they got to where they are and the events of the previous session every week. Director Stephen Frears captures these conversations, which go from heartfelt to hilarious at a moment’s notice.State of the Union, which is currently 100% Fresh with 15 reviews, is just one example of a growing trend of high-quality short-form programming, a format that was once the realm of viral YouTube videos and is now getting attention from mainstream studios and well-funded startups.Snapchat is making serious investments in original content, Netflix’s sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson is being praised for its peppy 15-minute episodes, and former Disney and DreamWorks Animation bigwig Jeffrey Katzenberg is looking to jumpstart a whole new entertainment industry with short-form start-up, Quibi, led by CEO Meg Whitman.Nick Hornby’s Comedy Experiment — in Brief(Photo by Parisatag Hizadeh/Confession Films/SundanceTV)But State of the Union’s writer, High Fidelity and About a Boy scribe Nick Hornby, wasn’t looking to disrupt anything when he came up with the idea.“That was just something I wanted to try to see if I could have any fun with it or make it work,” Hornby told Rotten Tomatoes. “I had the idea of the setup, people talking immediately before therapy, sometime before.”The constraints of the short-form format were an unexpected source of creative freedom, the author and screenwriter added.“Even though I [only] had 10 pages, those 10 pages were actually very liberating,” he said. “Certainly with movies no one is going to let you write a scene with 10 minutes of dialogue in it.”The dialogue is, essentially, the whole show, although both O’Dowd and especially Pike speak volumes with just their facial expressions as the two sit down across a pub table and attempt to determine what they feel for one another. Hornby stressed that the short length of the series didn’t necessarily make things easier for the actors, because actors “never get parts where they have literally 50 percent of the script,” as is the case in this series.Even though State of the Union is primarily a comedy, the couple’s conversations have real emotional heft.“I think that State of the Union, although it can be consumed in bite-size chunks, actually demands a lot of attention,” executive producer Jamie Laurenson said. “It’s very funny and entertaining, but you have to concentrate. It’s not lightweight because it’s small in size.”Streamer Quibi Bets on MobileAlthough Katzenberg’s Quibi is yet to launch, the Hollywood veteran’s new venture is aiming to capture a similar sort of feeling — snackable, but filling. The name itself is short for quick bites. Katzenberg and Whitman announced some details this weekend at the Produced By conference on Saturday in Los Angeles, and Katzenberg revealed more on Sunday at the Banff World Media Festival. Some of the details that emerged:Quibi will launch in the U.S. on April 6, 2020There will be two pricing tiers at launch: the first, for .99, with one pre-roll ad before each video segment, including a 10-second ad if the video is less than 5 minutes, and a 15-second ad for 5- to 10-minute videos. 2. an ad-free option at .99Approximately 7,000 pieces of content will be available within the first yearThe company will spend  billion on contentThe service s core-demo is aged 25-35Videos to be 7-10 minutesSome of the announced content includes:An untitled horror series from Steven Spielberg, four episodes of which Spielberg will write himself.#Freerayshawn starring Stephen James and Laurence Fishburne about Iraq War veteran Rayshawn (James), who is on the run after being set up by New Orleans police on a drug deal. The million project is from Sony Pictures Television. An untitled Steven Soderbergh project.A non-scripted series from James Corden’s Fulwell 73 featuring Israeli mentalist Lior Suchard.Punk’d and Singled Out reboots from MTV Studios.Anna Kendrick comedy Dummy from Deadbeat co-creator Cody Heller and independent studio Wiip.In a keynote presentation at South by Southwest this March, Katzenberg explained that Quibi, in addition to creating content that is specifically created for the time and technical demands of mobile viewing — the shows will be full screen in landscape and portrait mode, for example — will borrow from both film and TV. So they’ll be feature length, but broken up into episodes that are easy to squeeze in or to binge, whatever the viewer’s circumstances demand.“We’re bringing those two creative, narrative forces together,” Katzenberg said at the time. “A series, for us, is a two- to two-and-a-half-hour story, told in act breaks that are eight to 10 minutes long.Katzenberg s vision has drawn top talent and top dollar, and he makes the case that the startup is an entertainment pioneer akin to HBO, which seemed like a risky venture when it first came on the scene. He and other players in the short-form game are trying to tap into an uncharted market: would-be viewers who want quality, narrative storytelling that’s broken into chunks that fit into their busy (and mobile) modern lives.Snackable Storytelling Treats to Take on the Go(Photo by Parisatag Hizadeh/Confession Films/SundanceTV)“I know Quibi has very specific ambitions for their version of short-form content, and I think Jeffrey Katzenberg has publicly stated that he thinks it’s the answer to capturing younger audiences,” Hakan Kousetta, COO of Television for State of the Union producer See Saw Films, told Rotten Tomatoes. “I’m not sure I quite agree with that, but I do think that giving people as much opportunity to watch programs when they want in a way that’s convenient to them will always be the answer to increasing demand.”If that’s a 10-minute episode on a bus ride while waiting for a dentist appointment, great. If it’s binging an entire series so that it essentially acts like a feature-length movie, also great. State of the Union, for instance, which premiered with all 10 episodes running back-to-back like a film at Sundance, still holds up in this format.“You can watch three episodes back-to-back and have a half-an-hour slot show, or you can watch 100 minutes back-to-back, and it all works,” Kousetta said. “It doesn’t shortchange you if you want to consume it in that way.”For his part, Hornby didn’t concern himself too much with the question of whether he was making a movie or if he was making a TV series.“I really didn’t know what it was,” he said. “It was a TV show because it was bought by people who wanted to make it into a TV show. I didn’t ever think of it as being a movie. I thought it might be something that people might snack on. You know, watch on their phones while they’re sitting on the bus, or whatever, but you could have a complete experience over quite a short period of time.”Put another way, Hornby said, it’s a great alternative to mindlessly scrolling on your phone.“I think if you watch one episode on your daily commute,” he said, “maybe it’s better than flicking through YouTube videos or Instagram.”State of the Union is available to watch in full at SundanceTV.

ers is now developing a sequel to the 2019 update of Pet Sematary, although it s unclear what the sequel will be about, such as whether it will attempt to adapt the second film directly, or spin off a new story. The new film will be directed by screenwriter Lindsey Beer, who has also worked on several (unproduced) high profile projects like M.A.S.K. Netflix s Ozark, created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams and showrun by Chris Mundy, follows the downward spiral of a seemingly innocent Chicago accountant, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman). When his secret money-laundering deal with a Mexican cartel goes south, he decides to move his family to central Missouri to protect himself and the lives of his wife, Wendy (Laura Linney), and kids Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner).Over the course of the show s first two seasons, Marty s various criminal dealings resulted in overly bloody consequences; in fact, the amount of bone-chilling violence featured here, along with the strong performances delivered from each member of the cast, resulted in a bleak, yet action-packed series that surpassed genre expectations. It s no surprise that, upon its initial premiere, Ozark drew heavy comparisons to AMC s Breaking Bad. Each shows a family unit on the verge of collapse as its patriarch — whether it s Bryan Cranston s Walter White or Bateman s Marty Byrde — dabbles, to varying degrees, in the criminal underworld. Add in a cartel menace, snooping law enforcement entities, and the inevitable collateral damage each family faces, it s easy to see the similarities here. But as the story evolved in its second season, Ozark completely broke free from the Breaking Bad mold, as the Byrdes became complicit in Marty s crimes. His deal-with-the-devil became the family business, causing the overall brokenness of their fragile union to grow exponentially.(Photo by Guy D'Alema/Netflix)In the wake of Wendy s infidelity and the constant tension of who may be trying to kill them next, Marty tapped his significant other for help in a move to find solidarity and support. But things have a habit of not going his way, and as Wendy s taste for breaking the law grew, Marty was faced with one more challenge for him to deal with, or try to avoid at all costs in his crime boss–in–training wife.Season 1 didn t exactly dazzle critics, scoring a decent, but not stellar, 70% on the Tomatometer with 69 reviews. The second installment of the Netflix series performed a bit better and is now Certified Fresh at 76% on 45 reviews. Now, with new episodes dropping on Netflix, the question lingers: Is Ozark able to breathe new life into this bleak family drama or is the jig finally up for this bloody money-laundering tale? Here s what critics have to say about season 3 of Ozark.Marty and Wendy s Marital (and Criminal) Conflict Carries the Season(Photo by Steve Deitl/Netflix)Though the Byrde’s situation remains tenuous in some ways, they’re in a better position than ever before in others, the problem being that Marty and Wendy simply don’t see eye to eye on what’s best for their business and their family. As such, the series opens the door for the long-building conflict between the couple to finally come to a head. And the results are some of the best and most tense episodes of the series to date. — Kevin Yeoman, ScreenRantWendy seems hellbent on roaming the same criminal grounds Marty is now too afraid to retread while avoiding (or repeating) his mistakes. She wants to expand the family business. She wants to increase their profile, despite its obvious fallbacks (like attracting the FBI). And when her husband refuses to continue laundering money for the cartel and their other interests, Wendy picks up the pace of her campaign against him. — Andrew Husband, Den Of GeekEvil Laura Linney Is the Best Laura LinneyWendy in particular realizes her penchant for illicit and illegal activities this season, taking the lead of operations against Marty’s wishes, allowing Laura Linney countless moments to dominant a scene, proving exactly why she deserved her Emmy win. — Katie Awad, HypableIn some ways, this run of episodes is all about Wendy, whose new, flinty resolve scared her husband at the end of season two—and who is now putting that mettle to the ultimate stress test. The results are fascinatingly shaded; Wendy realizes she’s in perilously deep, while also digging in further. She’s horrified by the erosion of her ethics, while quietly thrilled by what’s possible once those bonds have been shaken off. This is the most that Linney has been allowed to tear into her character, and it’s thrilling to watch. — Richard Lawson, Vanity FairRuth Langmore Is the Unexpected Heart of the ShowJulia Garner, who won a supporting actress Emmy last year, is the saving grace of this season as Marty’s right hand and most senior employee, Ruth Langmore. Through brashness and bravery, her loyalty to Marty affords her increasing responsibility. Soon she’s running the casino and closer to the apex of danger. Through the loss of her father, uncles and cousins, we get to see Ruth’s vulnerable side. She softens in the face of a potential love interest, and toward Marty, who fills a fatherly void. It’s predictable character arc yet it doesn’t disappoint because it’s the season’s most finely drawn development. — Rachna Raj Kaur, Now TorontoFresh off her Emmy win for Best Supporting Actress last year, Garner remains a standout in this series. Ruth’s foul-mouthed spitfire attitude is still an absolute delight, but Garner continues to flesh out this character with complexity and a moving vulnerability that makes her one of the most interesting characters on the show. — Adam Chitwood, ColliderAfter a fine first season and a so-so second, this show is full of fresh energy. The best character is the casino manager (Emmy-winning Julia Garner), a spitfire you’ll want to meet. — Tim Appelo, AARPSeason 3 Is an Improvement, but Ozark Isn t Taking Any Narrative Chances(Photo by Steve Dietl/Netflix) Ozark lacks that brilliance that only few achieve, but it continues to do more with each season, and always manages to solve with efficiency all the mishaps in which it puts its characters. — Mikel Zorrilla, EspinofEven with a lot of the right pieces in place, “Ozark” remains short-sighted in how it manufactures drama, relying far too often on quick positional pivots and bad decisions to generate immediate conflict, rather than building long-term arcs with more satisfying payoffs. — Ben Travers, IndieWireOzark season 3 premieres on Friday, March 27 on Netflix.

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering stories from the last few weeks (because of the holidays) for titles such as Final Destination, Ghostbusters 3, Disney s Hunchback, and Monopoly. This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM CRUISE S MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 COMING IN 2021 AND 2022(Photo by Chiabella James/Paramount Pictures)There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of those examples, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). This week we learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for releases in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. Paramount is aiming to achieve this goal by hiring writer/director Christopher McQuarrie to work on both sequels, following what he s done on the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%) and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to schedule not just Tom Cruise, but his supporting cast, which may include Fallout co-stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. We don t have any indication what Mission: Impossible 7 (2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (2022) might be about, but they will probably feature Tom Cruise doing some of his own crazy stunts. Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020), and he will also be celebrating his 60th birthday on July 3, 2022, possibly around the same time that Mission: Impossible 8 will be released.Fresh Developments1. AN ACTUAL GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS NOW FAST-TRACKED FOR SUMMER, 2020 (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)We ve been seeing year-after-year of reboots and remakes, but only very rarely are they overturned by later films. If you were a big fan of 2016 s Ghostbusters (Certified Fresh at 74%), we have some bad news for you, as Sony is now pulling an about-face. Rather than moving forward with a sequel starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony is aiming to produce a Ghostbusters 3 that will extend the continuity that started with the 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Ghostbusters 3 will be a legacy sequel, with Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) taking over from his father Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters 3 will reportedly feature the teenage kids of the original Ghostbusters, possibly comprised of two daughters and two sons. We even already got a teaser trailer this week for the sequel, which is aiming for a summer 2020 release. In related news, Bill Murray is now signed to reunite with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks, co-starring Rashida Jones.2. BLACK PANTHER S NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN KING GETTING A SEQUEL: COMING TO AMERICA 2The 1988 blockbuster comedy hit Coming to America was #3 at the box office that year, preceding by three decades the success of another African king in last year s Black Panther. We already know Black Panther is getting a sequel, but now we can count on one for the former as well. Eddie Murphy is signed to return as Akeem Joffer of Zamunda for Coming to America 2, which will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle Flow, Black Snake Moan). Murphy and Brewer are coming off their recent collaboration on Netflix s upcoming Rudy Ray Moore biopic, Dolemite is My Name.3. HUNCHBACK (OF NOTRE DAME) GETTING LIVE-ACTION TREATMENTThere are absolutely no signs of Walt Disney Pictures slowing down their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films anytime soon (setting aside whether The Lion King is live action ). In addition to all of the films in development, the next five on Disney s upcoming slate are Dumbo (3/29/2019), Aladdin (5/24/2019), The Lion King (7/19/2019), Mulan (3/27/2020), and Maleficent II (5/29/2020). We can now add Hunchback, an adaptation of 1996 s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to the mix, as Josh Gad is now producing the remake for Disney. (Gad is a frequent Disney star, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen 2.) Gad is not currently expected to star, but that could change with time. Meanwhile, another project, Pinocchio apparently hit a snag over the holidays, with Paddington 2 director Paul King recently walking away (while Guillermo del Toro s Pinocchio is now in development at Netflix).4. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME TRAILER REVEALS MYSTERIO AND THE ELEMENTALS (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)An all-too-common complaint about trailers is that they reveal too much, with the best ones arguably just whetting our appetite without giving away the whole narrative. This summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) has a very thin line to walk indeed, as its mere existence could be a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019). Let s focus instead on what this trailer actually does show, which is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio fighting mysterious monsters called The Elementals. In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be acting as a superhero, but many fans were quick to point out that in his first appearance in 1964, Mysterio similarly pretended to be heroic, as he s traditionally one of Spider-Man s longest-running super villains. (Let s note here that 1964 is some 40 years before Syndrome did something similar in 2004 s The Incredibles.) As for the Elementals, three different Easter Eggs in the trailer seem to suggest that they could actually be Spider-Man s villains Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Sandman (or those could be fakeouts too).5. STEVEN SPIELBERG FINDS HIS WEST SIDE STORY REMAKE S MARIA, ANITA, BERNARDO, AND CHINO Steven Spielberg is getting closer to filming his remake of West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony, with the original film s Rita Moreno also cast in a supporting role. What we didn t know until this week, however, was who would be playing the film s female lead, Maria (played by Natalie Wood in 1961), or her best friend Anita (Moreno s original role). Those big reveals came this week as we learned that Maria will be played by 17-year-old Colombian-American newcomer Rachel Zegler. (You can watch Rachel Zegler performing various songs on her YouTube channel right here.) Anita will be played by Ariana DeBose, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for playing Donna Summer. Anita s boyfriend Bernardo will be played by David Alvarez (Tony winner for Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Maria s would-be-fiancee Chino will be played by Andrés Rivera (of the Hamilton national touring company). Spielberg also reportedly met recently with faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico about their concerns of how their community will be portrayed in this West Side Story update.6. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL LEAD THE WITCHES REMAKE Robert Zemeckis recent adaptation of the documentary Marwencol, called Welcome to Marwen (Rotten at 31%), was both critically panned and a box office bomb. For his next film, Zemeckis is aiming for a more conventionally popular project, with a remake of 1990 s The Witches, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl s 1983 children s novel. Anne Hathaway is now attached to star in The Witches as the Grand High Witch, the role played in 1990 by Anjelica Huston. The 1990 movie was itself a box office bomb, earning just million, but the film has arguably become a family favorite in the 29 years since. Robert Zemeckis new adaptation of Dahl s novel will be set in the Gothic South in the 1960s, with Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) also writing and producing along with both Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity).Rotten Ideas3. KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY  (Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart may not be hosting this year s Academy Awards, but his career is otherwise moving along quite nicely following the million opening weekend for The Upside. Within a few days of those numbers being confirmed, Kevin Hart was quickly attached to two different films, including one that s pretty high profile. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds like a drastic switch. Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board. If we disregard his two Kevin Hart concert movies, Tim Story currently has a seven-movie Rotten streak going that includes Fantastic Four (27%), the aforementioned Ride Along (19%), and Ride Along 2 (13%). Kevin Hart s second new project this week is called Fatherhood, based on the Matthew Logelin memoir Two Kisses for Maddy. Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers) will direct the tragic drama, in which Hart will play a newly single father after his high school sweetheart dies in childbirth.2. VIDEO GAME MOVIES STILL ROTTEN, HOLLYWOOD STILL MAKING MOVIES LIKE JUST DANCE (Photo by Alessio Bolzoni/Amazon Studios)We frequently talk about how bad video game-based movies have been over the years; there isn t a single Fresh film among the 47-plus that have been made. That may change this year with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but even if one of them does earn a Fresh score, it would only be a small dent in the genre s infamous reputation. In the grand Hollywood tradition of doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, we learned about another attempt to bring a video game to the big screen this week, namely the long-running Just Dance franchise. Screen Gems won an auction to the Just Dance rights after competitive bidding. In related news, Warner Bros long-in-development Minecraft movie attracted a new director this week in Peter Sollett, who directed Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist (Certified Fresh at 74%) and 2015 s Freeheld (Rotten at 48%).1. FINAL DESTINATION FRANCHISE BEING BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD (Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)The first Final Destination movie in 2000 earned just a 34% on the Tomatometer, but it inspired a franchise with four more sequels, only one of which scored above 48%. It can be argued that Final Destination, in which the survivors of lethal events are then haunted by death, trying to even the score, was somewhat ahead of its time, given the more recent success of franchises like Insidious and IT. The screenwriting team of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who worked on Saw IV, Saw V, and Saw VI, have now landed a new gig at New Line Cinema, working on rebooting the Final Destination franchise. Those Saw movies, likewise, have pretty Rotten Tomatometers (18%, 13%, and 39%).

Fan Favorite Actresses 2020Last year, Scarlett Johansson ran away with the Fan Favorite Actress award by tallying nearly a third of all the votes cast, and we weren t certain anything similar would happen this year, just because it seemed the competition was too good. Maria Bakalova came out of nowhere to stun everyone in Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm; Carey Mulligan, Frances McDormand, and Viola Davis all powered films to potential Oscar glory; and Anya Taylor-Joy became a household name with a trio of titles, including the massively popular The Queen s Gambit. As it turns out, Zendaya actually managed to thwart them all by matching Scarlett Johansson s impressive win last year. The star of HBO s Euphoria became the youngest winner of the Lead  Actress Emmy for her role in the series and starred in the filmed-in-quarantine drama Malcolm Marie, earning 31% of all votes in our poll. The order below reflects the number of total votes cast for each actor by users in a poll that ran on RT from March 10 to April 13.« Previous Category Next Category »ZendayaThe singer-turned-actress not only found time during quarantine to make a movie (Malcolm Marie), but she also became the youngest Emmy winner in the Lead Actress category for her outstanding work on HBO s Euphoria.Anya Taylor-JoyAnya Taylor-Joy has been ready to break out in a big way for a couple years now, and 2020 gave her the opportunity to flex her versatility in a period piece (Emma.), a superhero movie (The New Mutants), and a wildly popular miniseries about a chess prodigy (The Queen s Gambit).Margot RobbieMoving up one spot from her fourth place finish in last year s poll, Robbie proved without a doubt that she was the best thing about the 2016 Suicide Squad movie, as she headlined 2020 s Birds of Prey in all its candy-colored glory.Carey MulliganMulligan blew the doors wide open with her performance in Emerald Fennell s Promising Young Woman, helping the film to earn five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for herself.Sarah PaulsonSarah Paulson has been one of the most dependable character actresses of her generation, and in 2020 she was the face of malicious intent in the psychological thiller Run and the Netflix series Ratched.« Previous Category Next Category »

沙巴体育365真人 (Photo by Columbia Pictures)Disney remained in full dominance at the box office this weekend, though Quentin Tarantino had the biggest opening of his career and a shot at his fourth 0 million grosser.King of the Crop(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)No surprise that Disney’s The Lion King was able to hold on to the No. 1 slot this week. Even with a 60 percent drop, the animated film was still able to haul in million. That is the ninth-best second weekend of all time, and with 3 million in the bank it is good enough for eighth place after ten days of release. Incredibles 2 last year had 9.7 million and the live-action Beauty and the Beast was at 9 million in 2017. They now move down to ninth and tenth all-time. All signs right now suggest Jon Favreau’s redo is headed north of 0 million domestic. It is over 2 million worldwide to date and already 47th on the all-time chart.Once Upon a Time…Generally, films about Hollywood and the industry do not draw the same reactions from the public as they do from critics and people in the know. Comedies such as Tropic Thunder, Get Shorty, and Bowfinger have done well enough, but more inside baseball stuff about the business, like Ed Wood and Hail, Caesar!, have not exactly attracted major interest. But throw in two of the most recognizable names in front of the camera and a third behind it and all of a sudden you have Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which earned the biggest opening of Quentin Tarantino’s career with .35 million. Better even than his last go-round with Brad Pitt in August 2009 when Inglourious Basterds opened to .05 million. However, it may be the other star that is the true secret sauce.Leonardo DiCaprio is as safe a bet these days in casting original projects. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan help, but the Oscar winner also elevated Baz Luhrmann and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to the biggest successes of their careers as well. DiCaprio’s last four films (including his supporting turn in Django Unchained) have grossed 6 million or higher. Go back a full decade to 2010 and you can make the streak six out of seven (with Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar being the sole outlier with just .3 million total). Inception (.7 million), The Great Gatsby ( million), and Shutter Island ( million) all opened higher, but that just means that Once Upon a Time is the fourth-best opener of DiCaprio’s career, just as it is Pitt’s. World War Z (.4 million), Mr. Mrs. Smith (.3 million), and Troy (.8 million) all opened higher. Pitt has had ten 0 million grossers as either a lead or co-lead. If you count Django, then DiCaprio has had ten as well. An opening like this certainly gives both actors a chance to take those numbers to 11.The Top Ten And Beyond(Photo by Sony Pictures)Spider-Man: Far From Home crossed the billion-dollar line worldwide this week; it is the first Spidey film to do so. With 4 million after 27 days, the film overall is still right in line with 0 million grosser The Hunger Games and still a bit ahead of 2002’s Spider-Man. However, its fourth weekend of .2 million is well behind the respective million and .5 million fourth weekends of those films, so it is fading a bit faster. Transformers: Dark of the Moon posted a million fourth weekend as well, and finished with 2 million. Far From Home is still about million ahead of that film’s place and is likely headed somewhere in the vicinity of Spider-Man 2’s 3 million. Worldwide it is currently the 32nd-best earner of all time and seems on track to pass Skyfall’s .108 billion and become Sony’s highest-grossing film ever.Toy Story 4 is going to cross 0 million domestic next weekend, and after 38 days is the 18th-highest grosser ever. Its .8 million sixth weekend is better than 11 of the top 20 films on that list, and looks ready to finish north of 5 million. That will help get the film over a billion as it currently stands as the 56th-highest-grossing film ever worldwide. Ahead of it at the moment, globally, is Disney’s live-action Aladdin, which, with .009 billion in the bank, is the 39th-highest-grosser ever. Finally, in limited release news, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell — still brandishing a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer — made it into the Top Ten this weekend. It is the first film not in wide release to hit the top ten since the weekend of Mar. 22-24 when No Manches Frida 2 grossed .77 million in 472 theaters. The Farewell is only in 135 theaters nationwide and grossed .55 million this weekend. How does that stack up to similar releases? That is better than A24’s Eighth Grade did last summer when it expanded to 158 theaters in weekend three and grossed .26 million. When Revolutionary Road jumped to the same number of theaters in its third weekend, it grossed .42 million that week and went on to gross .91 million total. Among a sample of some of the more successful indie releases between 125-150 theaters at this point, The Farewell is not quite up to the heights of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Midnight In Paris, but with .6 million after 17 days it is ahead of all the rest of them, including such notable titles as There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and Thank You For Smoking. Next weekend’s nationwide expansion will paint a larger picture. This Time Last Year(Photo by © Paramount)It was Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout handily leading the way with a .23 million opening. That was more than the next five films in the top ten combined, including the disappointing bow for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which only began with .41 million. Both films were very well-liked with critics, scoring 97% and 91%, respectively. Last year’s entire Top Ten averaged 71% on the Tomatometer and the Top Ten grossed 3.33 million; just the 42nd-best among July weekends since 1990. This year’s Top Ten averaged 73.7% on the Tomatometer and grossed a total of 2.52 million, only the 34th best.On the Vine: Hobbs Shaw Hopes For Spinoff SuccessFor the third week in a row Hollywood is delivering just a single new wide release into theaters and it could be another big one. Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw hopes to explode next week after the previous three films in the franchise opened to million or higher. Will Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s partnership draw the loyal fanbase to similar numbers? Also next week, A24 expands Lulu Wang’s The Farewell nationwide. And look for other well-received Sundance fare in limited release, including Luce (95%) with Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., as well as Jennifer Kent’s follow-up to

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering a big week for movies based on video games and DC Comics. This WEEK S TOP STORYJOHN WICK DIRECTOR TO ADAPT SAMURAI VIDEO GAME GHOST OF TSUSHIMA(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection, Sony Interactive Entertainment)John Wick (Certified Fresh at 86%) came out just seven years ago, but in that relaively short time, its three main creators have had several other hits (including the two John Wick sequels, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw, and this week s Nobody). Director Chad Stahelski has spent most of that time working on the John Wick franchise, including next year s John Wick: Chapter 4 (5/27/2022), but this week, we learned of a new project. Following the critical and box office successes of Pokemon Detective Pikachu (Fresh at 67%) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%), Hollywood is increasingly looking at other video game adaptations, and so Chad Stahelski is now attached to direct Sony Pictures Ghost of Tsushima, based on the popular 2020 samurai video game. Ghost of Tsushima now joins a slate of video game adaptations that Sony Pictures has in the works that includes Uncharted (2/11/2022) starring Tom Holland, Metal Gear Solid starring Oscar Isaac, and The Last of Us as a series for HBO Max. Other projects that Stahelski is developing include a Highlander reboot and the John Wick spinoff Ballerina.Other Top Headlines1. THE SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER REVEALS JAWS-SIZED SYLVESTER STALLONE ROLE (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The arrival last week of Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 73%) seems to have put an end-of-sentence period on one part of the DC Extended Universe as Warner Bros. prepares to move on to other movies like The Flash (11/4/2022) and this year s The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), which ended up being directed by James Gunn following a brief kerfuffle over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2018. Warner Bros. quickly swooped in and nabbed Gunn, and this week, the first (red band) trailer The Suicide Squad debuted online. In addition to all of these cool character posters and the reveal of Starro as the movie s main super villain threat, we also now know that King Shark will be voiced by Sylvester Stallone, who had a brief cameo in Gunn s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The timing of this trailer comes just days after WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff confirmed that there are no plans to revisit David Ayer s Suicide Squad (reportedly Ayer s original take was darker in tone than the released edit) in a way similar to Zack Snyder s Justice League, and also that there are no plans to #RestoreTheSynderVerse either. Finally, speaking of DC Comics movies that aren t going to happen, Joe Manganiello confirmed this week that the solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, if it had happened, would not only have featured him as the anti-hero Deathstroke, but would also have introduced a new Batgirl as Batman s sidekick.2. PIERCE BROSNAN CAST AS DC COMICS SORCERER DOCTOR FATE IN BLACK ADAM (Photo by Jonathan Prime/©Universal Studios)Going as far back as the 1940s, when Aquaman was introduced two years after Marvel s Sub-Mariner was a big hit first, DC Comics and Marvel Comics have had competing characters with similar powers or names (The Atom vs Ant-Man, Wonder Woman vs Wonder Man, Swamp Thing vs Man-Thing, etc.). Marvel fans all know Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange now, but that mystical character s introduction in 1963 actually came 23 years after DC Comics similarly named sorcerer, Doctor Fate. Doctor Fate was a founding member of the Justice Society of America, which is going to be introduced to the big screen soon in Dwayne Johnson s Black Adam, and this week, we learned that Doctor Fate s human alter ego Kent Nelson will be played by former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan. This makes Brosnan the second Bond to join a DC Comics project after Timothy Dalton, who plays the Chief in HBO s Doom Patrol. Brosnan s fellow JSA members will include Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Black Adam has faced a number of filming delays in the last few years (most recently due to COVID-19, obviously), but Dwayne Johnson posted an update this week that filming is expected to start in three weeks.3. MAGICAL DC COMCS SUPERHERO ZATANNA IS ALSO A PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Doctor Fate wasn t the only magical DC Comics superhero to make the news this week. Just last week, an investor day image revealed that Warner Bros. was developing a Zatanna movie, and this week, the project was officially confirmed in a proper fashion, with a surprising choice that probably caught many people pleasantly off guard. Director and screenwriter Emerald Fennel (who s also known as an actress for her role as Camilla Parker-Bowles on Netflix s The Crown) currently has three Academy Award nominations (for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture) for her feature film directorial debut Promising Young Woman (Certified Fresh at 90%). Studios often swoop in on Oscar winners after the fact, but the particularly astute ones make these moves before the awards are handed out, and that s what Warner Bros. and Bad Robot have done by hiring Emerald Fennell to adapt their magical superhero movie Zatanna. First introduced in the comics in 1964, Zatanna is a long-time member of the Justice League of America who casts spells by saying what she wants to happen backwards (for example, Stnap Ruoy Pord Namtab! might be embarassing for Bruce Wayne), but Zatanna has never been depicted in a live-action film. It s not yet known if Fennell will also direct Zatanna, or if she might even star as Zatanna or another supporting character.4. DAME HELEN MIRREN TO TAKE ON VILLAIN ROLE IN SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)One of the high points of Dame Helen Mirren s early film career was her portrayal of the evil sorceress Morgana Le Fay in Excalibur (Certified Fresh at 80%), and now, 40 years later, she has signed on to play another magical villain. In a somewhat unusual move, the role that Mirren will be playing in the upcoming sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023) does not appear to be directly lifted from any of the 70 years of actual Shazam comic books. Instead, the villain Hespera appears to be a new creation, although she is described as being the daughter of Atlas, who is the first A of the anagram Shazam that gives Billy Batson his powers (the stamina of Atlas, specifically). It s not yet known if Atlas or any of the other characters in the anagram will also appear in the sequel. Something that is curious about Hespera being described as the main villain in Shazam: Fury of the Gods, however, is that it differs from the teaser at the end of Shazam!, which suggested that the next major villain would be Mister Mind.5. SALLY HAWKINS AND STEVE COOGAN TO FIND THE LOST KING (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One of the most surprising history-based news stories of the last ten years was arguably the 2012 discovery of the bones of King Richard III under a parking lot in England. Now, the true story of how that all went down is being adapted as a comedy drama called The Lost King, to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Philomena). This week, Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) signed on to play the historian who discovered the remains, with Steve Coogan playing her husband (and also co-writing the screenplay). Hawkins is also currently filming the Princess Diana biopic Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart, in which she is expected to be portraying a fictional or composite character (although most of the cast are indeed based on real people).6. SETH ROGEN TO PLAY STEVEN SPIELBERG S FAVORITE UNCLE (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Just two weeks ago, we first learned that Steven Spielberg will soon be directing an unusually biographical film about his life as a child and teenager in Arizona falling in love with the art of filmmaking. Michelle Williams was announced right away as being cast as Spielberg s mother, and this week, another member of the director s movie family has also been cast. Seth Rogen, who previously starred alongside Williams in Take This Waltz (Certified Fresh at 79%), has been cast to play Spielberg s favorite uncle in the currently untitled drama. Spielberg and his casting agents are currently searching for the young actors to play the young Spielberg (who won t be named Steven in the movie) and his friends in 1950s and 1960s Arizona. The drama is expected to start filming on location this summer and be finished in time for a late 2022 release (about a year after Spielberg s West Side Story remake on 12/10/2021).7. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO STAR IN AFGHANISTAN WAR TRUE STORY COMBAT CONTROL (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Although Netflix seems to have received more media attention over the last few years as a major winner of film auctions, according to Deadline, MGM has taken over that position since the beginning of 2021, and the old school studio continued that aggressive stance this week by winning another hotly sought film rights package. MGM is in final talks to acquire the rights to Combat Control, a war drama to be based on the true story of Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman of the United States Air Force. Jake Gyllenhaal will star as Chapman, who received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his role as a combat controller in Afghanistan in 2002, with the film focusing on the 15 years it took for Chapman s commendation to be upgraded to the Medal of Honor, making him the first airman to receive the medal since the Vietnam War.8. TV SHOW BEWITCHED TO GET A SECOND NOSE WIGGLE (Photo by Everett Collection)Hollywood has been regularly adapting old TV shows into movies since the 1980s (Dragnet was an early example). The results haven t always been great, though, such as the 2005 movie Bewitched (Rotten at 24%), starring Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman, based on the popular 1960s show. What s less common is for a studio to actually make a second attempt at adapting such a show after the first movie has disappointing returns, but that is exactly what Sony Pictures is doing with Bewitched. Sony Pictures has hired TV showrunners Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (MacGyver, 12 Monkeys) to start working on a new Bewitched feature film screenplay. Rather than the meta approach of the Will Ferrell movie, this Bewitched is expected to be a closer adaptation of the original show s premise of a witch who settles into suburban domesticity after falling in love with a non-magical advertising executive. Between Zatanna at Warner Bros. and Bewitched at Sony, one has to guess that WandaVision (Fresh at 91%) is having an immediate influence.9. RAMPAGE DIRECTOR TO ADAPT ANOTHER VIDEO GAME WITH SNIPER ELITE(Photo by James Atoa/Everett Collection)Ghost of Tsushima was not the only video game adaptation to make the news this week. Brad Peyton, who has directed Dwayne Johnson three times in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rotten at 45%), San Andreas (Rotten at 49%) and the old school arcade game movie Rampage (Rotten at 51%), signed on for another video game adaptation this week. That project will be adapted from the World War II third-person shooter Sniper Elite, a franchise whose latest entry, a supernatural spin-off sequel called Zombie Army 4: Dead War, released just last year. The Sniper Elite movie will tell the story of Allied sniper Karl Fairburne, who engages in a cat-and-mouse chase through the streets of London at the height of the Blitz during World War II, as he tries to save British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from a Nazi assassin. Sniper Elite is being produced by one of the Ubisoft executives who was also behind the Assassin s Creed (Rotten at 18%) movie starring Michael Fassbender. On an Apple device?
