Are Marvel superheroes now only allowed to save the day on Disney+? ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke was asked how her new corporate sibling was at sharing intellectual property when she spoke to journalists Wednesday at the broadcast channel s press day at the winter portion of the Television Critics Association biannual tour. She also answered questions about this year s Oscars ceremony, which air February 9 on ABC, and revealed news of a live production of Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein stage musical and more.TOP STORYWHAT TO EXPECT IN A POST-S.H.I.E.L.D. WORLD (Photo by ABC/Marvel Television)With ABC s Marvel s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. heading into its final season and other series based on Marvel comic-book characters leaving Netflix, it s easy to assume that all any hope of seeing a live-action superhero show from this universe would require a subscription to the recently launched Disney+, which — like ABC — is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.Burke told journalists at TCA that, while she s sad to see S.H.I.E.L.D. go, we’re looking forward to working with [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, and we’re at the very beginning of conversations with him now about what a Marvel and ABC show might look like. Like all older children who have embraced a new baby in the home, she cautioned that right now, Marvel’s focus has been on Disney+, as it should be.”IT S ALIVE! A LIVE SHOW!(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Still into watching (and tweeting about) live TV adaptations of stage musicals? Walk this way ABC announced Wednesday that it has partnered with Mel Brooks on Young Frankenstein Live!, which is based on the stage musical adaptation by Brooks and Thomas Meehan of the 1974 film parody by Brooks and Gene Wilder of the classic Mary Shelley novel — voof! This production will include music from the stage production, which was originally composed by Brooks.Although an official air date has not been released, Burke said that the special will, fittingly, air just in time for Halloween. Casting will also be announced later this year.A MILLENNIAL SPIN ON THIRTYSOMETHINGThe latest classic program to get a sequel is thirtysomething, the ground-breaking TV dramedy from the late 20th century about, well, people in their 30s. ABC has ordered a pilot of the project, which is titled thirtysomething(else) and is written by original series creators Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick. Although a deal isn t finalized yet, the plan is for Zwick to direct. Also returning? Original cast members Ken Olin, Mel Harris, Timothy Busfield, and Patty Wettig. Other actors will play their now-grown offspring because, as the press release states, apparently, raising children (even grown children) never ends. But who could have known how hard it would be for them to raise their parents? MODERN FAMILY S FANS LOVE MITCH CAM(Photo by ABC/Tony Rivetti)Speaking of fan-favorite series about parenting and families, ABC will be saying goodbye to its Emmy-winning mockumentary Modern Family on April 8. The show has changed the way many people view topics like adoption, interracial marriages and May-December romances. It also helped normalize the previously taboo idea of a married gay couple, thanks to Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet’s portrayals of Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker. The actors and creators are thankful for this appreciation and support. Ferguson thought back to the first episode, where Mitch and Cam surprise their family with the news that they ve adopted a baby. Putting a gay couple in the forefront and not having it be a sidekick and having them be an integrated part of the family and not leading with the fact that they’re gay — meeting them when they’re at this moment in time when they’re bringing home a child and becoming new parents for the first time — it’s something that’s incredibly relatable to so many people, gay and straight and nonbinary, Ferguson told journalists during his show s TCA panel. I think it was revolutionary back then, and I don’t think it’s as revolutionary now, which I think is a great thing. THE OSCARS GO HOSTLESS — AGAINKeeping with what has become a tradition, Burke confirmed that the Academy Awards ceremony will again go without a celebrity host. Still, she promises, that Hollywood s biggest night will still have big musical numbers, big comedy and star power. Don t feel too bad for Jimmy Kimmel, ABC s late-night star and former Oscar host. He ll be hosting a celebrity version of long-running ABC game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The famous folk will be playing for charity and episodes begin airing April 8. No word on whether Kimmel will don original host Regis Philbin s wide metallic ties.THE BACHELOR GETS A SONG IN ITS HEART(Photo by ABC/Paul Hebert)You d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs, but The Bachelor franchise sees it isn t so.New series The Bachelor: Listen to Your Heart premieres April 13 and is meant to keep fans, ahem, engaged between the end of a season of The Bachelor and the start of a new season of The Bachelorette. The twist to this spin-off? The 20 singletons/contestants will try to find love through music. Yes, to quote the press release, this means they will be singing well-known songs, both individually and as couples, [and] they will look to form attractions through the melodies, find and reveal their feelings and ultimately, fall in love. Burke told journalists to think The Bachelor meets A Star Is Born. Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week. When you look up the numbers for James Cameron’s Avatar, they are impressive: fastest film to cross the billion mark (after just the 19th day of its international release), highest opening weekend for a non-franchise movie (2 million), .789 billion at the global box office. When you look at the fanbase: crickets. How is that possible? How can a movie not just any movie, but a science fiction movie be this huge and have no discernible fanbase? No visible, active, enthusiastic devotees who dissect it and repurpose it and build stories around it like almost all genre fans do. The word “Ewok” is never spoken in Return of the Jedi, but if you stop anyone on the street and ask them to name the cuddly Star Wars teddy bears, everyone knows what they are, even if they aren’t an avowed fan. If pressed, it’s doubtful anyone could even name a single Avatar character.Mind you, we re not talking about Avatar s industry impact here. As a delivery system for the next evolution in 3D technology, it was truly groundbreaking, and it sparked an obsession with 3D movies that still hasn t quite abated (although audiences have seemingly caught on to the idea that not everything needs to be seen this way remember Baz Luhrmann s disastrous The Great Gatsby?). No, what we re talking about here are fans. Rabid, canon-obsessed fans, who pick apart every detail, cosplay in meticulous costumes, cover their desks and computers with figures and collectibles, and perhaps most importantly, keep the story alive on their own through fanfic, home made movies, and artwork. It s here that Avatar s impact is barely felt at all.Ryan FujitaniSci-fi fans don t need a ton of fodder to latch on to a property, either. Joss Whedon s Firefly didn t even air a full season and fans rallied around it so passionately that they willed a movie into existence, kept spin-off comic books on the shelves, and still show up at conventions and fests proudly displaying their browncoat allegiance. Star Trek was a ratings flop when it first aired, but planted enough fan seeds that it eventually went from cult series to movie franchise to extended, multi-timeline, multi-format colossus. Akira was a single, standalone anime film from 1988 and you still see its iconic poster repurposed for everything from Batman to Seinfeld. Blade Runner was a bomb but still got comic book spinoffs and unofficial merch. When was the last time you saw someone wearing an Avatar shirt? A quick Google search for “Avatar fan films” brings up a lot of results… for the Avatar: The Last Airbender anime series. In honor of the movie’s 10th anniversary, let s consider some of the factors that may contribute to Avatar s struggle to gain a fandom foothold, and whether or not the planned sequels can help.Avatar Was An Experience, Not A Story(Photo by ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved courtesy Everett Collection)It’s kind of fitting that Avatar got a recent boost from the announcement of a Disney World theme park based on the planet Pandora (albeit a short-lived boost; interest waned the minute the ribbon was cut on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge), because Avatar has always been about an immersive experience more than a gripping story. Soon after the film’s release, you began to see stories about “Avatar Depression” – people who loved virtually sailing through Pandora so much that they were sad they couldn’t actually live there (America being neck-deep in a throttling recession didn’t help). The idyllic jungle world was so detailed and beautiful – especially in 3D – that people just wanted to exist inside it. The characters and plot, neither of which were especially well crafted, seemed to just get in the way. Cameron himself even hinted at this during the press tour, saying to the Los Angeles Times:“You’ve got to compete head on with these other epic works of fantasy and fiction, the Tolkiens and the Star Wars and the Star Treks. People want a persistent alternate reality to invest themselves in and they want the detail that makes it rich and worth their time. They want to live somewhere else. Like Pandora.”Avatar the film had become like one of those videos they show while you wait in line for a theme park ride. You sort of half pay attention – yeah, yeah, blah blah blah – while you anticipate strapping in and blasting off. People didn’t see themselves in the characters the way Trekkies saw their own scientific curiosity reflected in the crew of the Enterprise, or leave the theater wanting to be any of them the way every young boy left Star Wars believing Han Solo was the coolest person in any star system. Which brings us to…It Was Populated by Bland, Forgettable Characters(Photo by ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved courtesy Everett Collection)Who left Avatar wanting to be Jake Sully? (And again, raise your hand if you actually remembered that Jake Sully was the name of Sam Worthington’s main character.) Part of it can be blamed on Worthington’s thoroughly charisma-free performance, but it’s not like bad acting in sci-fi has ever been a hindrance (take a bow, Mr. Shatner). It’s more that the characters seemed stock and, again, like an afterthought. A fanbase grows when you capture the audience s collective imagination, but that has to go beyond visuals. No one wants to necessarily live on Tatooine, but you want to imagine more adventures for Luke. The crew of the Serenity is made up of scoundrels and misfits scouring the intergalactic old west – they can literally go anywhere and run into anyone. You like them, so you want to see them in new adventures, even if it means writing them yourself.Between the generic scientists, the stoic, one-note Na’vi, and the bland corporate villain, Avatar just provides no grist for the fan mill. Who’s writing the further adventures of Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore)? It’s All In the Timing, Maybe? (Photo by Mark Fellman TM & Copyright ©20th Century Fox. All rights reserved/Courtesy Everett Collection)Some argue that Avatar, being an original standalone movie without any pre-existing source material, faced a steeper hill to climb than some others. But a lot of sci-fi films could claim that very same thing at the time of their release and still have fanbases to show for it. Of course, the intense labor involved in making one of these films made it impossible for Cameron to strike while the iron was hot. In fact, he just recently announced completion of principle photography on Avatar 2 (which was received with very little fanfare) and that movie still won’t be done until December 2021. Without fans keeping the flame lit through fanfic and cosplay and general enthusiasm, it just feels like an anti-climactic, “Oh yeah, Avatar. I remember that.” For a movie that made billion in 19 days, this is an incredibly unlikely place for it be.Cameron is also no George Lucas, in the sense that Lucas never had qualms about selling Star Wars, and in fact devised new ways to sell and re-sell it over the years to keep that enthusiasm firing away. There were new theatrical versions, new toys, new games, and new fashion brand tie-ins seemingly every year. Cameron doesn’t have that kind of hucksterism in him, and is content to let the movie speak for itself. Which may be why it’s lost some steam over the past decade. But for better or worse, the sequels (plural, as Cameron has teased at least three more installments) will really be the test of whether or not Avatar can develop anything close to a rabid fandom. He has promised to go deeper into the mythology and ecosystem of Pandora, which may help stoke some of the dormant wanderlust people experienced in 2009. But it’s a gamble — a big, unwieldy, expensive gamble. Not only do the films have to reignite interest in the story after 12 years, they have to overcome the fact that the franchise may not have the wow factor it once did, now that bloom is off the 3D rose. It’ll be a challenge, and so far, Avatar has found an enthusiastic core of fans to be mostly unobtanium.Avatar was released on December 18, 2009.

The movie is less than a year away from release, but it was only this week that we found out the voice cast will include Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Sam Rockwell, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson. In related news, Searchlight Pictures announced this week that their previously-untitled murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan will be called See How They Run, and it will be release sometime in 2022.7. MYSTERIOUS PREDATOR PREQUEL SKULL COMPARED TO SURVIVAL THRILLER THE REVENANT(Photo by Fox/Everett Collection)10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is currently about 75% finished filming his next project, which was confirmed this week to be titled Skull. What that title doesn t tell you is that the film is actually a prequel to a fan favorite sci-fi action franchise: It will tell the story of the the alien hunters from the Predator series in a survival thriller set some time in the past that s being compared to the The Revenant. The only known Skull cast member right now is Amber Midthunder (Legion, The Ice Road), who was reportedly cast as a Comanche warrior woman who is forced to fight a Predator.8. THE CHI STAR JOINS HOUSE PARTY REMAKE AFTER CAST SHAKEUP (Photo by Showtime)Hollywood s remake fever has nearly run out of ideal properties from the 1980s, so the trend is starting to move more and more towards revisiting the 1990s (and by the end of the 2020s, we ll probably start seeing lots of remakes from the 2000s). After several years of development, New Line Cinema is ready to start filming their remake of the 1990 Kid n Play comedy hit House Party. Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair from Doctor Who) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr (Bumblebee) had been cast in April, but Lendeborg reportedly recently dropped out to focus on his mental well-being. His role will instead go to Jacob Latimore of the Showtime series The Chi. The original House Party was an ensemble comedy, so this remake probably will be as well, but none of those roles have been announced yet.9. SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER BLACK WIDOW STREAMING STRATEGY(Photo by Marvel Studios)Walt Disney Pictures received criticism for their decision to stream Black Widow day-and-date with the theatrical release, which has resulted in s its international box office looking like it will to end up about where Scarlett Johansson s Lucy (3 million) did far below most MCU films. Johansson took on the issue directly this week by filing a lawsuit against Disney, accusing the studio over a breach of contract. Key to Johansson s suit is that her contract was based on bonuses from the box office performance of Black Widow, which the lawsuit alleges were significantly reduced because of the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+.  Disney responded by calling the lawsuit sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johansson s agent replied to that as being a direct attack on her character. More reactions can be read here. What is unclear is how this lawsuit will impact  Johansson s future dealings with both Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, where for example, she had just recently developing a movie project based on the Walt Disney Theme Parks attraction Tower of Terror. On an Apple device? OK —Winnick: But I will tell you this: It was definitely my highlight of working on it. I asked Michael Hirst, I want three things out of my directorial debut: Give me a big event. Give me something epic and amazing. You will see that is actually in the trailers right now. So there is a big event. I wanted character-driven material that I can push the actors, my fellow costars, to new levels that the audience hasn t seen them do before. And I m happy to say that I definitely put Alexander Ludwig through the ringer. And even Marco and Jordan — Hvitserk and Ubbe. The third thing is just coming from a martial art background and doing my own stunts and being passionate about the fight choreography, I asked him for a big fight, a big epic battle, and you will see that as well.(Photo by Jonathan Hession and History)Now that you re facing the the tail end of your series, what will you miss most about your time on the show?Winnick: I don t miss getting into the costume hair and makeup, because that was always a process. We tried to get it down at the end. That wig was a challenge because we were shooting in high definition and you only get X amount of space to glue it on. Or even the prosthetics with the latex around the eyes — I have very sensitive skin, so the process was definitely a process. What I won t miss: The coffee in Ireland s not the best. I ll tell you that. They made instant coffee. Our craft table was pretty always kind of scarce, but it kept us lean. But yeah, the instant coffee I m not a huge fan of.What s coming up next for you? Winnick: I ve had a really busy year. Really excited to say that I ve done three projects, three different independent movies. There s an incredible script called Flag Day, written by Jez Butterworth (who just won the Tony for Ferryman), and Sean Penn directed and starred in. I play his wife, and our daughter is played by his real daughter, Dylan Penn. We ve got Regina King in this, you ve got Miles Teller, we have Josh Brolin. It was really an amazing experience on set to work with Sean, and especially becoming now a director myself — I just did a show on Netflix; I directed, Wu Assassins — but it s nice just to see him [work]. He s so accomplished and brilliant as a director and knows what it takes to get the performance out of you, but also aesthetically knows what is pleasing and what he wants. I wanted to really see him work and spend time with him on set and create something that hopefully people will realize how special it is, because I have a place in my heart for that as well. And to go through like three decades, we went through 60s, 70s, and 80s, and to have that physical change of — there s prosthetics, there s hair changes — It was a very interesting movie, and I m really passionate about that one. Great experience.I did a movie with Liam Neeson I just finished called Minuteman. I ve been a fan of his since back in the day, obviously, Taken and Schindler s List. He s also from Ireland. I played his daughter. That s coming out. And did a movie this summer also with Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart, more of a conspiracy theory, written and directed by a female director, April Mullen, so it s nice to be able to support a female storyteller.(Photo by Jonathan Hession and History)Speaking of women in power, Lagertha has been such a huge influence on women because she s such a strong character. She s one of the most powerful women on television. How do you feel about portraying a character like that? What are some of the responses you ve gotten about being her from women?Winnick: I am still blown away when I meet fans that are diehard fans, and such loyal fans of Lagertha, just because it s — not just women and girls, it s men too that really look up to her, respect her, like her. So it s nice that it s reached both genders. But more importantly, it s also around the world. I ve been lucky enough to travel for the last few years. I was in India, I was in Brazil, I ve been in Argentina, Canada, and all over Europe, really, and all around in different cultures people from all around the world, not only recognize her and me, I guess, but they also really feel the same way, and then really feel that there s a part of them in Lagertha, or they look up to her, and that s been remarkable to see.Even in India, you can go to different villages and people, they live on their Netflix. And Philippines, people don t even have running water, but they all have cell phones and they watch Vikings on their cellphones. It was just amazing just to see how it can inspire people everywhere. It s a little strange when you see somebody, when they have your face tattooed on their bodies. That s a little surreal because I feel kind of uncomfortable with it just because it s like, Hey, you re stuck with me for life. No, but on one hand you can t ask for a bigger compliment than to have such loyal fans.On the flip side it s also made it hard to find projects that I m also as inspired, and work with writers that can write such a complex, strong, yet vulnerable character. It s been a challenge. I ve read a lot of scripts that I m not wanting to sign on to because I feel that the characters aren t — or the woman character is underwritten or their voice isn t as multi-dimensional as I would want it to be. And I think we still have a long way to go, and hopefully we encourage more female writers, female directors, and female producers to be able to tell those stories. Have the men do the same as well.(Photo by Bernard Walsh and History)Are you saying that Michael Hirst has ruined you for life?Winnick: I m just going to have be in a Michael Hirst movie for the rest of my life. How about that? Not really. Yeah. He set the bar really high, and I wouldn t want it any other way. Especially in TV when you re signing up for multiple months, if not years, of your life, you want to make sure there s a character you can really sink your teeth into and be inspired.I learned a lot from Lagertha. I really, truly did. And the truth of the matter is, if I was 100-percent honest with you, I ve yet to really say goodbye. I actually have a hard time watching it. I haven t been able to watch the episodes in this season. I prepared, obviously, as a director to watch certain ones, but as a whole, it s just so close to my heart still. And now that everybody knows that this season s finished, I think maybe next year I ll finally get a chance to sit down and binge-watch all of them, but it s still too fresh for me. It feels like you re saying goodbye to a big part of yourself and life. It s hard to say. You go through a mourning process a little bit because, as you know, the show ended. The fans are there mourning with you, but, you know, Valhalla. Winnick: To end on an up note, this season s been amazing. It s going to be surprising. It s definitely going to be a bunch of shockers, and the fans will not be disappointed. They re going to be ecstatic when they see this season.Vikings returns for its final season on Wednesday, December 4 at 9/8C on History.

(Photo by ©20th Century Fox Films Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)If you grew up in the 90s, chances are your first exposure to anime was either Pokémon or Digimon, and your parents would regularly mix one up with the other. Honestly, it s not that hard to see why. Both shows originated as video games  Digimon started out as Tamagotchi-like virtual pets and Pokémon was a series of role-playing games before expanding to trading cards, TV shows, and movies. While Pokémon grew to become a multimedia juggernaut that has churned out TV seasons non-stop since 1997 and produced over 20 feature films, Digimon has quietly but steadily remained in its shadow since it premiered in 1999. But with the recent release of Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and with the franchise s first film, Digimon: The Movie, celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, it s about time we take out our Digivice, become champions of the Digital World, and explore why Digimon is the superior 90s franchise about young kids who befriend small fighting monsters. It Was Appointment TV(Photo by FOX)By the late 90s, we were already entering the era of prestige TV, as the arrival of shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing, with a stronger focus on serialized narratives, forced people to tune in every week or risk missing important plot points. Though children s television at the time was mostly episodic, Digimon marked a groundbreaking development for many kids of the era who discovered that they too had to watch every episode if they wanted to follow along with the story. Many episodes ended on cliffhangers, characters experienced genuine story arcs, and smaller events and characters were frequently referenced later. Sometimes, major characters would be separated from each other for weeks at a time, and side characters would suddenly become important. This made for a more challenging but rewarding experience that treated children like a serious TV-viewing audience. More than anything, the show trusted its young viewers to keep up with its narrative week by week, so that by the time the epic finale came each season, the anticipation for it had been building for months. It Tackled Mature Subjects(Photo by FOX)Digimon is very much a Saturday morning cartoon-style show aimed at kids, but it got away with a surprising amount of depth. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Digimon featured character development that would unfold over the course of each season. The second season spent a lot of time telling the story of the self-proclaimed Digimon Emperor, who is consumed by darkness and begins to take over the Digital World before atoning for his sins in a redemption arc that spans several episodes. The show also explored themes that were relatable to kids but seldom seen in kids cartoons, like exploring the effects of a divorce on a family, the pressure of living up to one s family s expectations, or the grief of losing a loved one. In the third season, a character named Jeri is even thrown into a weeks-long depression after the death of a Digimon friend. Indeed, Digimon fully acknowledged that its titular creatures are dangerous beings, and danger lurks behind every corner, sometimes with devastating results. The show was upbeat and action-packed for the most part, but it was never afraid to pull at your heartstrings, either. Its Stakes Were Incredibly High(Photo by FOX)Digimon isn t about collecting all the monsters, or about fighting a new villain each week; it s about kids on a mission to literally save the world. No offense to Jessie and James of Pokémon s Team Rocket, but they aren t the most competent villains out there. Meanwhile, the Digital World of Digimon is home to some seriously monstrous villains capable of ruthless evil. Each season hinges on world-ending stakes that require the kids to work against all odds with the help of a friend or two to win the day. In most of the seasons (as well as the recent movie and new reboot), the Digital World even leaks into the real world, threatening to destroy everything.Such high stakes have meant that the series has lost more than a few of its characters. This may be a children s show, but Digimon has never been afraid to kill off beloved heroes in heartbreaking ways we still haven t healed from the devastating loss of Wizardmon in the original series. Plenty of friends and allies have met their demise over the course of the show, so much so that one character held a funeral for lost friends during the first season. But sure, remind me how sad it was when Ash said goodbye to Butterfree — which wasn t even permanent. The Movie Is Bonkers and Has a Fantastic, Totally 90s Soundtrack(Photo by Everett Collection)Speaking of high stakes, the plot of Digimon: The Movie is completely nuts. The main characters (still 10 years old, by the way) literally have to prevent a nuclear warhead from exploding over Tokyo after a virus-infected Digimon takes over the U.S. nuclear arsenal specifically to target a couple of kids. It takes a while for the kids to bring the fight to the bad guy, though, because they also have to battle… slow internet connections and the unreliable email.Considering the movie was cobbled together from three short films and packaged for release outside of Japan, it s a wonder the story makes any sense at all. It s also worth noting that two of those three short films were the early efforts of acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, who would go on to make films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Mirai. But the greatest thing about Digimon: The Movie isn t its ludicrous story, but its bizarre yet surprisingly solid soundtrack. Just as Pokémon: The First Movie included songs by Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and NSYNC, the producers of Digimon went all out to make their movie the most 90s event ever. In addition to the show s theme song, which reflects a time when every anime show was marketed to American audiences with hip hop, the film s pop soundtrack includes everything from Fatboy Slim, Barenaked Ladies sexually-charged One Week, and a fantastic cover of Kids in America by Len to a pre-Shrek All Star by the one and only Smash Mouth to close out the film. That s right, pre-Shrek. Meme or not, that s hard to top.It Knew How to End(Photo by Toei Animation)Franchises eventually change, whether they re Star Wars, Marvel, or Toy Story, but Pokémon, despite an occasional change of scenery, has otherwise remained pretty much the same, plot- and character-wise. Digimon, on the other hand, always knew its audience was eventually going to grow up, so it grew up with them. 2015 saw the release of Digimon Tri, a series of movies that picked up 5 years after the end of the original show, with the characters now in high-school. Then, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna came out earlier this year and, like Toy Story 3 did for a little while, actually dared to say goodbye to the franchise with a story that signals from the get-go that it will be Agumon and Tai s final adventure.Digimon s audience came of age with the franchise because Digimon is a coming-of-age story. It recognized its place in the audience s life and has grown to reflect the same changes its audience has experienced. Digimon knows some things from our childhood will inevitably have to be left behind. Though the series was ultimately rebooted earlier this year, Last Evolution Kizuna puts a bittersweet bow on 20 years of adventures that began with Digimon Adventure and Digimon: The Movie, which is an example that more franchises honestly should follow.Digimon: The Movie was released in theaters on October 6, 2000.On an Apple device? We re now in the heart of the summer movie season, so it shouldn t shock anyone to learn that the movies audiences are most looking forward to include a Pixar film, a superhero blockbuster, and a sci-fi adventure. What might be more surprising is that, in a triumph of counterprogramming, a high-concept fantasy musical and a deadpan zombie comedy also made the list. Read on to find out the five most anticipated movies by Rotten Tomatoes users and our fans on social media in June.1. Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%9,043 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fans, #2 pick by our Twitter fansOpens June 21Toy Story 3 gave us all a satisfying, emotional franchise finale, so it was something of a surprise when we learned the good folks at Pixar were planning to revive the series with a fourth installment. That hasn t dampened the enthusiasm for the series, though, as Toy Story 4 sits comfortably at the top of this month s list of most anticipated movies. Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang plus an old friend and some new additions are on hand to continue the story as Andy s younger sister Bonnie makes a new toy at school who s not so thrilled about being a toy. Dark Phoenix (2019) 22%5,982 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Twitter fans, #3 pick by our Facebook fans, #5 pick by our Instagram fansOpens June 7With the recent acquisition of Fox s film and TV branches by Disney, it s probably going to be some time before we see the X-Men back on the big screen, so Dark Phoenix might be the last we see of the series for the foreseeable future (we re thinking of New Mutants as sort of an offshoot of the main series). With that in mind, it s probably appropriate that the existing franchise is going out with a bang, adapting one of the most iconic stories from the comics. Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and the rest of the younger, soft-rebooted mutants return to explore the darker side of Turner s Jean Grey, who becomes unstable after a mysterious encounter in space. This one resonated the most with our Twitter fans, and it amassed the second-highest number of Want-to-See votes.3a. Men in Black: International (2019) 23%3,268 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fans, #5 pick by our Facebook fansOpens June 14Next up, we ve got a tie for third, so we ll start with the revival of the Men in Black franchise. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are nowhere to be found at least, that s what we assume, barring a surprise cameo from them in the movie and this time, the focus shifts to MiB s London branch, where a rookie agent played by Tessa Thompson is partnered up with Chris Hemsworth s veteran Agent H to track down a mole in the organization. Here s hoping the chemistry they displayed in Thor: Ragnarok wasn t a fluke.3b. Yesterday (2019) 63%

Ghcxuf ogical ones. Family comes in all shapes and forms, and I think that s beautifully portrayed in this story. Eve, who plays Bly Manor gardener Jamie, agrees: I think it s the connection that they all need. And they re all hoping for it, but don t realize they need it. It creeps up on them that they are a part of this [sort of] union they had no idea they were lacking. And that kind of completes them as human beings in a way. 3. There s a Lot Going On Behind Peter s Steely Gaze(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)One of the more secretive characters in the season is Peter Quint, played by Jackson-Cohen, whose performance in Hill House as the Crains damaged, drug-addicted son/brother Luke brought the actor wide acclaim. The character he plays in Bly Manor is vastly different.Described in Vanity Fair recently as a calculated business associate of the uncle s who tends to take whatever he wants from Bly Manor, regardless of permission, Peter was taken directly from The Turn of the Screw. He s still a man of mystery, however. When pressed about Peter s steely-eyed gaze in the show s official trailer, Jackson-Cohen sidestepped spoilers about his character and his relationship with Dani to reveal what makes his character s countenance so engaging. I was born looking like that, Jackson-Cohen joked, adding, Peter is a really, really interesting character — there are so many sides to him. You [eventually] get to see an awful lot more of where he s from, and why he s the way he is — I m really excited. 4. Bly Manor Was Just as Grand as It Looks on Screen (Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)The Haunting of Hill House set the bar high for set design, especially considering what Flanagan and his crew accomplished in the installment s sixth episode, Two Storms. But given that the new series takes place in a completely new era and location, we asked just how grandiose and detailed the Bly Manor set was. The sets were absolutely [stunning], Eve, who plays gardener Jamie, said. We had the ground floor in one studio and the top floor in another studio and outside was a separate place, completely. But it certainly was still big that you felt the kind of the grandness of the house as you were walking through it. Miller, who appears as housekeeper Mrs. Grose, agreed, quoting one of this season s catchphrases: It really was perfectly splendid. The little details that we don t always get to see on screen — the art department did such an amazing job. The littlest of things that I recognized from my own childhood that were around in the ’80s, as well, the artwork, the furniture it was such a tactile set, and you just wanted to touch everything and open drawers and cabinets — and there were things in them! It was just a brilliant, great set. 5. The Series Is Too Scary for Amelie Bea Smith and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth To Watch(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Amelie Bea Smith, best known as the voice of the titular character in animated hit Peppa Pig, and newcomer Benjamin Evan Ainsworth play the young siblings and were both thrilled when they learned they booked the roles. It was just one scene. It was one self-tape that we had to do, Ainsworth explained. There wasn t a callback or anything. Just straight to offer, which is so crazy and amazing. So that night, I was just so chuffed with myself and happy, and we were all celebrating, so it was really fun. As excited as the young actors were in booking these roles, they don t fall into Bly Manor s target demographic. Smith is just nine years old, and Ainsworth is a couple of years older. I think I m allowed to watch little bits of it, but I think I d be terrified watching some of it, because I don t watch many scary movies, the young actress said. It s not my cup of tea. The same is true for Ainsworth: I am so scared by scary movies. So I don t think I ll be allowed to watch them. [I was even] creeped out on set. 6. The Dolls Hold the Keys to Bly Manor s Secrets(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Flanagan has previously talked about Bly Manor s dolls, telling Vanity Fair, I think for kids, it’s about control. Kids have such little agency. Dolls provide that. But there’s also a darker side to it. Ownership, claiming someone, ceasing to look at them as a human, and instead, looking at them as an object, as a doll…we can draw lines to all sorts of toxic romantic relationships that way, and get into gender politics and the objectification of women in particular by this genre.”Asked about the odd little toys in the series and the giant dollhouse she got to play with, Smith revealed their bigger purpose in the series: They re just really amazing little dolls. But the dollhouse, itself, is a clue to the whole house. It has lots of secrets and Flora uses it to protect everybody. 7. Mike Flanagan Has Built a Soul Family of His OwnLook at Flanagan s work over the past decade, and you ll see some faces pop up again and again. One example is his professional partnership with Thomas, who, aside from appearing in Bly Manor as estranged uncle Henry Wingrave, has played young Hugh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, Tom in Netflix s Gerald s Game, and took on the iconic role of Jack Torrance in the big-screen adaptation of Doctor Sleep that Flanagan wrote and directed based Stephen King s sequel to The Shining.Flanagan s tendency to reuse talent on multiple projects is reminiscent of a theater troupe or a stage family, which lines up perfectly with the ongoing familial component featured throughout his work. It s beneficial because you re already comfortable,  Thomas said.  There s a trust there in the sense that he knows what I can do. I know how he works, and it s a very comfortable way to work, actually, as an actor. A lot of times, getting to know you might stretch into a whole shoot, in terms of director-actor relations. It s a really good feeling. And it s nice to kind of build a friendship with the people that you re working with. When you see each other again at work, it s like seeing your own family at the office. The Haunting of Bly Manor launches on Friday, October 9, on Netflix.Correction: The quote It was just one scene. It was one self-tape that we had to do   previously attributed to Smith has been corrected to be attributed to Ainsworth. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. 😈😈

华体会全站登录 Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Salem s Lot and Tom and Jerry, and new roles for Ben Affleck, Peter Dinklage, and Jennifer Lopez. This WEEK S TOP STORYLEONARDO DICAPRIO JOINS GUILLERMO DEL TORO S NIGHTMARE ALLEY REMAKE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection, Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Getty Images)The dark 1947 carnival drama Nightmare Alley is not as famous as other examples of film noir, but it remains a dark, creepy film worth seeking out. The film s profile is about to rise much higher in the next year or two, though, because Guillermo del Toro has decided a Nightmare Alley remake will be his next film as director, after the Academy Award-winner The Shape of Water. Leonardo DiCaprio will headline Nightmare Alley in the lead, a carnival showman who rises to fame by pretending to talk to the dead as a medium, taking over the role played by Tyrone Power in the original. The 1947 movie was an adaptation of a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham that did take some liberties with the story (especially the ending), so it s possible that GDT s adaptation will be closer to the source material. Nightmare Alley will start filming in late 2019, and will probably be released sometime in 2020. Speaking of remakes, Guillermo del Toro also talked this week about his former plans for remakes of classic monster movies like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, saying, I don t think it s going to happen. Fresh Developments1. JAMES BOND 25 EVENT CONFIRMS RAMI MALEK, AND MORE (Photo by Well Go USA Entertainment)MGM and Eon Productions, the companies behind the James Bond franchise, staged a big event yesterday at Ian Fleming s Goldeneye estate in Jamaica to promote James Bond 25. Some speculated that the event might reveal the title (it didn t), but there were several casting revelations. As had been previously reported, Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) was confirmed to be the film s villain. The biggest new news was that Jeffrey Wright, who skipped Skyfall and Spectre, will be returning as CIA agent Felix Leiter, joining Daniel Craig s Bond on an international adventure to rescue a kidnapped scientist. Whatever it s called, the 25th official James Bond film will be directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, HBO s True Detective) when it s released on April 8, 2020.2. STEPHEN KING S SALEM S LOT VAMPIRES FINALLY STALKING THE BIG SCREEN (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)This year marks seven years since the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, which was, for the most part, the last successful Hollywood movie featuring traditional vampires (2014 s Dracula Untold, not so much). Sony and Marvel are now filming Morbius (starring Jared Leto) for release next summer (7/31/2020), so that s at least a vampire movie coming out soon. A new project that will be further out is an adaptation of Stephen King s Salem s Lot, which was previously adapted twice as a TV mini-series in 1979 and 2004. Producer James Wan and screenwriter Gary Dauberman previously collaborated on The Conjuring spinoffs Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and the upcoming Annabelle Comes Home, and are now reuniting for Salem s Lot. Stephen King s original 1975 novel is about an author who returns to his hometown to discover that a spooky mansion is now home to a European vampire and his brood. (Note: The proper title of Salem s Lot starts with an apostrophe, because it s an abbreviation of Jerusalem s Lot, which is the town.)3. PETER DINKLAGE LEAVING WESTEROS FOR THE THICKET (Photo by HBO)HBO s Game of Thrones has an extended cast of dozens of actors, so with the show ending, we re in the early stages of an expected deluge of post-Game of Thrones casting announcements. Many of them are European and mostly work outside Hollywood, but one of the stars who very much is a Hollywood star is Peter Dinklage (for example, Avengers: Infinity War). Dinklage s next film will even be produced by Hollywood Gang, which is the company behind the dark and twisted thriller The Thicket. In it, he will star as a fierce bounty hunter named Reginald Shorty Jones, who is hired by a boy in Texas after his sister is kidnapped by a serial killer known as Cut Throat Bill.4. WHO S BEN AFFLECK GONNA CALL? GHOST ARMY (Photo by Universal Pictures)Before he signed on to play Batman in 2013, Ben Affleck s career as director was moving pretty quickly, with three films in five years (Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo), all Certified Fresh. Affleck had to delay filming Live by Night for a while (it eventually came out in 2016), and now it s been another three years since that film. This week, we finally heard what film he will direct next, for what will effectively be only his second film over the last seven years. Affleck will direct and star in Universal Pictures Ghost Army, which will be adapted from the book The Ghost Army of World War II: How One Top-Secret Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound Effects, and Other Audacious Fakery. (The great thing about non-fiction books is how they can relate the whole premise in a subtitle.) One can draw a pretty obvious correlation between Ghost Army and Affleck s Argo, which was also a fact-based drama about how moviemaking techniques were used to carry out a mission (in that case, the liberation of diplomats during the Iran Hostage Crisis). The Ghost Army was also adapted as a PBS documentary in 2013.5. ANGELA BASSETT TO DRINK YOUR GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (Photo by Phil Bray/Fox Searchlight Pictures)Although they re mostly supporting roles, Angela Bassett has been racking up an impressive series of high profile films recently, including Black Panther (as his mom), Bumblebee (as the voice of the villain Shatter), and Mission: Impossible Fallout (as the CIA director). This week, Bassett signed on as one of the leads in an action thriller called Gunpowder Milkshake, as one of the unassuming leaders of a massive armory.  She joins two already-signed actresses who are also coming off very popular franchises: Lena Headey stars in HBO s Game of Thrones as Queen Cersei Lannister, and Karen Gillan plays Nebula in Avengers: Endgame (and also co-starred in 2017 s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle).6. COLIN FARRELL, CYCLOPS, AND BRAN STARK ARE VOYAGERS (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.)After an early career that included The Illusionist (73% Certified Fresh) and Limitless (69% Fresh), director Neil Burger ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/neil_burger ) is currently coming off two films below 43% Rotten (Divergent and The Upside). For his next film, Neil Burger has cast the male lead ( https://deadline.com/2019/04/voyagers-colin-farrell-lily-rose-depp-tye-sheridan-cast-neil-burgers-lord-of-the-flies-in-space-universal-agc-1202602566/ ) from The Lobster, Colin Farrell, along with a young cast that includes Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark from Game of Thrones). The movie will be a science fiction thriller called Voyagers and show what happens when a spaceship with 30 young people sent to populate a new planet experiences a surprise disaster.Rotten Ideas3. BRITNEY SPEARS GETTING MUSICAL, ONCE UPON A ONE MORE TIME (Photo by Jason LaVeris/Getty Images)This summer, we ll finally get the ninth feature film directed by Quentin Tarantino, the 1960s period piece, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but it won t be the only movie in the next few years (or so) that borrows that naming convention, because Sony Pictures has won the screen rights to an upcoming Broadway musical called Once Upon a One More Time. As you might be able to guess, it will be a fairy tale musical using classic songs by Britney Spears (was Spears career long ago enough now to be considered classic ? #thiswriterisold). The golden oldies that will be featured in the musical will include Circus, Lucky, Toxic, and Oops I Did It Again. There is not yet a writer or director for this movie, or an idea of who might star.2. JENNIFER LOPEZ SAYS MARRY ME TO OWEN WILSON(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant/Getty Images)The romantic comedy has almost vanished from the big screen (except for rare films like Isn t It Romantic?), but the genre is starting to enjoy a comeback, thanks in large part to streaming sites like Netflix. The distributors that are probably going to commit most fully to something like this are the indies or smaller studios that mostly focus on fringe or counterprogramming genres anyway. One such company is STXfilms, and this week, they moved forward with the romantic comedy Marry Me with Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Lopez will play a pop star who flees from her cheating groom at the altar and picks a random guy (Wilson) from the audience and marries him instead. Marry Me will be directed by Kat Coiro, whose three previous films all received Rotten Tomatometer scores.1. CHLOE GRACE MORETZ TO STAR IN TOM AND JERRY(Photo by Shane Mahood/Focus Features)Although their long-in-development sequel to Space Jam is the project that gets the most media attention (thanks to LeBron James), Warner Bros. is also moving along with their plans to reboot Tom and Jerry in just under two years (4/16/2021, to be precise). We ve known for a while that Tom and Jerry will be a live action/animation hybrid (in the tradition of 1945 s Anchors Aweigh), with the title cat and mouse being mute characters (so they won t have any voice actors). The lead human, we learned this week, will be Chloe Grace Moretz, who will play a hotel worker who hires a cat named Tom to get rid of a pesky mouse named Jerry who has taken up residence there. Tom and Jerry is the week s most Rotten Idea not because of Moretz, but because it s going to be directed by Tim Story, who hasn t directed a Fresh movie that wasn t a Kevin Hart comedy concert film since 2002.Like this?
