What it means for the future is anyone’s guess.5. Will Galactus Be the Phase 4 Big Bad?(Photo by Marvel)After Thanos presumably gets his comeuppance in Avengers: Endgame, will Marvel Studios sow the seeds of another intergalactic Big Bad? If they attempt such a thing, Fantastic Four antagonist Galactus would be of a size and shape worthy to follow Thanos — even his headgear is more thrilling! But that is assuming Phase 4 will have a Big Bad. And come to think of it, the term “Phase 4” rarely comes up in Feige’s comments these days.It took three phases and 22 films — now known as The Infinity Saga — to get to Thanos, even if he was introduced in the first Avengers film. So Phase 4, if we’re still using that term, may just see the regrouping of the heroes who survive Endgame and the introduction of the Eternals and Shang-Chi. If that is the case, the new big bad would be introduced in a potential fifth Avengers film in, say, 2022 or wherever Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends up on the schedule. It would also provide ample time for Feige to plan the integration of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four into the MCU. And what better way to introduce Marvel’s first family than by the Avengers searching for them ahead of Galactus’s arrival? (We’re maybe getting carried away here, but we’re damn excited.)Of course, we are assuming the next few years of MCU storytelling will use the same momentum as Phases 1-3. But considering Marvel Comics has been using the same narrative conventions in its event crossover comics for the last few decades — to say nothing of the financial rewards the studio established by using the technique — it seems a safe bet that Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, the Guardians, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four will unite to face some universe-shattering threat 22 films from now, if not sooner.6. What of the Defenders and The Gifted?(Photo by Sarah Shatz/Netflix)Turning our attention to television, the Fox acquisition comes at an odd time for Marvel’s live-action initiatives. On ABC, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was renewed for a seventh season well ahead of its season 6 debut this summer. Cloak Dagger returns to Freeform in a few weeks, and reports indicate Runaways’ second season was successful enough at Hulu for a third year to be all but a certainty. But over on Netflix, all of the Marvel shows were quickly cancelled following the debuts of their most recent seasons (except for Jessica Jones, which was cancelled ahead of its still-unscheduled season 3 debut). And from the way Netflix structures its deals, it will be some time before any of those characters can resurface on Disney platforms like Hulu (which the company now has a 60 percent stake in) or Disney+.Meanwhile, the new Disney streaming platform indicates Iger’s desire for a single Marvel may not be in the cards just yet. Disney+’s Marvel television series will be produced by Marvel Studios, while all the television efforts to date are works of Marvel Entertainment. Yes, there is a difference, as the former is a division of The Walt Disney Studio, while the latter is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. In short: Disney operates two Marvel companies and, sometimes, their interests do not align. This is ultimately why the Defenders did not make cameos in Avengers: Infinity War and why the final seasons of their shows saw no one turning to dust. From the Fox standpoint, the acquisition offered an incentive to end Legion after three seasons on FX. While Hawley recently said he always saw the program as a three-year story, the changing nature of Marvel TV no doubt helped the executives OK the idea of ending it now. Meanwhile, The Gifted’s future on the Fox broadcast network remains up in the air. The network — which was retained by newly minted Fox Corp. — plans to hold onto several popular series now owned by Disney (which acquired Fox s TV studio branch as well), including The Simpsons. But The Gifted is not exactly popular. Also, there is no telling how it may interfere with Marvel Entertainment’s plans going forward or Marvel Studios’ long-term goals.Fox later answered the media attention around the completion of the acquistion with a trailer:In the meantime, Hulu and Marvel Entertainment announced an initiative to create four animated series for the platform, potentially leading to a stronger relationship between the two branches of the Disney empire. As it happens, Disney wants Marvel content to stay in house, so Disney brands like ABC, Disney+, Freeform, and Hulu are the places you will see future Marvel TV shows. Additionally, the newly acquired FX networks may prove a good outlet as well for projects more in the vein of Legion. Maybe the long-lost New Warriors will find a home on one of those channels.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

For starters, Masterpiece executive producer Susanne Simpson teased that although she doesn t have any official announcements about a potential second season of the currently airing Miss Scarlet and the Duke, that fans should wait for it — we ll have something soon, I think. She also highlighted the eclectic nature of Masterpiece s 50th anniversary. One of the things we tried to do with our 50th anniversary was we tried very hard in January to really show off the different types of programs that we do. We felt it was a bit of a gift to our audience to do that on our 50th. So, we had [Elizabeth Is Missing with] Glenda Jackson, who obviously is one of the top actors of our time, so we wanted to tell everybody we re still showing off acting royalty in Masterpiece. We have All Creatures Great and Small — that s a very heartwarming show for a family audience. I think Miss Scarlet and the Duke is terrific, because it s a woman character that s very feisty for her time and kind of fighting off roadblocks. And then we have The Long Song, which is a really important show, very powerful, very moving. Other highlights from the public broadcaster s upcoming slate: Hemingway, the latest from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick featuring narration from Jeff Daniels as the famous writer and attempts to deconstruct Hemingway s hyper-masculine image: I think the persona of the wild man, the drunk, the bar guy, the big game hunter, the big sea fisherman is what we inherit, the baggage we carry. But almost immediately we began to see how thin and frail that was, not just for him but in fact, Burns said. The upcoming My Grandparents War features stars Helena Bonham Carter, Mark Rylance, Carey Mulligan, and Kristin Scott Thomas as they trace the journeys of their grandparents during World War II, and Bonham Carter, whose family history is traced in the season premiere, said the experience helped her learn about her grandparents in a more intimate way.“I had a vague approximation, myths almost, of both my grandparents that we followed. This just filled in a lot of the detail and bought them very vividly to me,” she said. “Violet, my grandmother, I would have been her age when the Second World War happened. So I met them almost as peers. It was really extraordinary. The two-part documentary The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song from Henry Louis Gates Jr. traces the history of the Black church in America through historical figures and contemporary celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, John Legend and Jennifer Hudson. Said Gates: We wanted to make a series about the sheer transcendent power of belief, and never has that message been more important than now. NEW TRAILERS: Maggie Returns to The Walking DeadIn the bonus episodes of The Walking Dead’s 10th and penultimate season, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) returns, which almost certainly means she’s going to have an issue with Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) new role among her group of friends. (Photo by 20th Century Fox. Thumbnail: Netflix/courtesy Everett Collection.)The Worst Superhero Movies of All TimeGreat leaping tomatoes! It s the worst superhero movies ever, an infamous league of Rotten films that scored less than 30% on the Tomatometer!First off, to keep this list spandex-tight, not only did we include superhero movies below 30%, but each had to have at least 20 reviews, guaranteeing enough critics witnessed of these erratic efforts, franchise non-starters, and would-be blockbusters. After looking through the list, if you re wondering why you didn t see the 1990 Captain America movie, a bunch of those sequels to The Crow, or Dolph Lundgren s The Punisher, they were cut out by not accumulating at least 20 critics reviews. But, don t worry, still plenty of room for Frank in this castle of decrepitude, as the other two Punisher movies, the Thomas Jane one and War Zone, are represented. In fact, they both even currently have the same score at 29%, just squeezing into the list. And while most Audience Scores are in the same realm as its movie s Tomatometer, there s a divergence on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Dark Phoenix: Both Rotten movies according to the critics, but which settled above 60% on the Audience Score.Nic Cage appears twice on this list because they made two Ghost Rider movies. Ryan Reynolds also shows up twice but in two separate franchises, mucking it up in both houses of Marvel and DC via Blade: Trinity and Green Lantern. And because who doesn t like a comic book showdown, in the battle of Marvel vs DC over who s made the most worst superhero movies, Marvel is triumphant with 10 listings, and DC at 9. We didn t count The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the movie so bad it made Sean Connery quit acting, because though it was at the time produced at an imprint of an imprint of DC Comics (it s imprint-ception, people), the comic was always wholly owned by its creator Alan Moore.Of course, let s not count out other labels making special appearances, like 2000 A.D. (Judge Dredd) or Image (Spawn). Then there s the magic that happens when when Hollywood executives come together to create something that didn t come from a comic book, with sparkling results like Tim Allen s Zoom, an adaptation of TV cartoon Underdog, and the toy-based Max Steel. One last thing: For movies with the same Tomatometer scores, whichever had more reviews was placed higher. Now, come take a flying leap as we rank the worst superhero movies of all time!(And see a movie here you love and think Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong ? k Widow 2 set in the five-year gap between Thanos s (Josh Brolin) death and Scott Lang s (Paul Rudd) return from the Quantum Realm. Would Natasha be as weary as she seems in Endgame? Why would she feel that way if she reestablished ties with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexi Shostakov (David Harbour). Did they get Blipped? Or did another falling out occur, leaving her to run the Avengers with occasional in-person visits from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)? Alternatively, a sequel could see Nat and Yelena teaming up for another quip-filled adventure as the Red Room still needs further dismantling. Also, we ll point out here that another objective of Black Widow was to establish Yelena as a major Marvel player going forward, so we expect any Black Widow sequel would feature her. That said, a Marvel more comfortable with prequels could go back to the Budapest operation (even if we got the gist of what transpired in Black Widow) or even focus on a story in which Natasha is the villain during her time as a Red Room agent. More prequels mean more possibilities while still maintaining the deaths and actions of certain characters a feat even the comics can t pull off!Implications for the Hawkeye Disney+ Series(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)But speaking of Yelena, the film s most direct nod to Phase Four comes during the film s post-credit stinger, when the former Black Widow accepts a mission to hunt down Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), a thread that will be picked up in the upcoming Hawkeye television series. Shot in late 2020 and early 2021, the Disney+ series will see Clint training or assisting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a new Hawkeye with issues all her own. Also, we re pretty sure they re going to run afoul of tracksuit-loving mobsters and adopt an adorable golden retriever with a love of pizza. The project was one of Marvel Studios worst kept secrets, with its existence long-rumored and Steinfeld s part in it leaking a year before the studio made the news official and even then, photos of the actor in costume appeared on the internet a good week before studio president Kevin Feige finally confirmed her participation at the December 2020 Disney Investor s Day presentation. Another rumor about the show indicated Pugh would be making her first post-Black Widow appearance in the series. Then, in December of 2020, it was reported that Pugh officially joined the cast of the series alongside a handful of others. Just a couple of days ago, in an interview with Variety specifically about the post-credits stinger at the end of Black Widow, director Cate Shortland and Pugh essentially confirmed what everyone suspected when Pugh confessed that she didn’t ever really imagine that [her role in the MCU] would continue quite so quickly. It s worth noting, though, that as Black Widow was originally slated for release last year, the Hawkeye reference sets up something well into the Disney+ slate. It sidesteps the initially announced programs in favor of what will be Marvel Studio s sixth television program, although there is a nod to another TV show we ll talk about in a moment. As it stands now, Hawkeye will debut less than year after Black Widow, which means Yelena will be fresher in viewer s minds when she inevitably beats the living daylights out of Clint. The Contessa As Phase Four s Fury(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Of course, the stinger also features an appearance by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). According to Feige, she was always meant to debut in Black Widow, with the stinger serving as a forward link to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But since her debut ended up occurring in that series, the Contessa s appearance here has a slightly different effect it amplifies, rather than establishes, the notion that she s serving as Phase Four s answer to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). As we theorized after TFaTWS s finale, the Contessa is collecting a team of her own. From her conversation with Yelena, we can gather that Yelena already works for her by the time she learns of Natasha s death on Vormir. But just what is the Contessa s aim in building her own Avengers? The character s comic book history offer some clues, as the character evolved into the most adept rogue agent ever trained. In her lifetime as a comic book character, she has betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, and seemingly Leviathan, although she could still be loyal to that group. So far in the MCU, the Contessa s subordinates include an ex-Russian spy and a failed Captain America. That doesn t feel like an accident, despite whatever promise of glory and country she feeds to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Is it possible she runs the current incarnation of the MCU s Leviathan, the Soviet scientific research and espionage agency we mentioned in our round-up of Five Things to Remember Before You See Black Widow? Like Hydra, it was built to survive, and she could easily be its director. Then again, she could be working with Fury. The two have a long history in the comics, and she could be collecting Phase Four characters on his behalf. The motive: a further defense against whatever foe is up in space that Fury is planning for with the Skrulls (as glimpsed in the Far From Home post-post-credits stinger). But that all depends on whether or not the Contessa is in any way altruistic.Lastly, there is always the possibility that she herself is a Skrull and furthering an agenda to be revealed in Secret Invasion another Phase Four Disney+ series due next year.No matter the true answer, it is interesting to see a character assembling a new team for a shadowy purpose.Taskmaster As A Continuing Threat(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)We admit this one may be built on a flimsy premise Marvel seemingly cast Olga Kurylenko for a two-line role in Black Widow. But a face as familiar as hers suggests to us that we will see Taskmaster again. For one thing, she s a great hand-to-hand foe. Imagine Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) or Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) facing an opponent who knows their every move. Try to think of the quip Clint will deliver after she squarely trounces him.But beyond the physical threat she poses to just about everyone, there is also a further story to tell about her. As opposed to her comic book counter, who is often just a mercenary, Antonia s story is one of trauma and the horrible realization that her own father put her in this situation. How will she come to terms with that? Will her freedom from mind control and apparent turn away from evil at the end of Black Widow actually stick, or will her anger lead her down the villain s path? If the latter, will she be clever enough to organize some of the villains herself, or will she fall in with someone like Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl)?(Photo by Adrienn Szabo/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Come to think of it, one of the few things Marvel Studios has yet to attempt is a villain team-up. Is it time for the Masters of Evil? Granted, they ll need a slight rebranding as that name hardly suits Zemo s style or politics.Marvel could also utilize Taskmaster as a recurring villain, which the franchise has done on occasion (not counting big bads like Thanos or Loki). Antagonists generally die or get completely de-fanged by the end of a Marvel movie, and one of comic book Taskmaster s great strengths is his resiliency. Antonia could prove more successful at the recurring villain role than Crossbones (Frank Grillo) or Batroc (Georges St-Pierre). Also, as Taskmaster fights everyone in the comics, Antonia could appear in anything from an Eternals sequel to the Moon Knight series to Blade.Black Widow is in theaters and streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access now.On an Apple device? Sophie-Marie Prime for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you become involved with Wayne, and what made you want to be a part of it?Reese: Sean [Simmons] created this show. He grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts, which is sort of an “other side of the tracks” kind of place. He was inspired to write a spec pilot based on a little bit of his background and watching kids in Brockton who were real tough who would get beat up by groups of bigger kids, but not back down.Wernick: You know, scripts end up on our desks quite often. This one really jumped off the page. Sean had such a distinctive voice, and that s really what you look for. There s so much out there that kind of feels the same, and it feels predictable, and this one you just — it was a page turner. It was kind of a perfect mix of tones for us, and fit into “brand,” if we were to have one, Rhett and I. We jumped at the chance to be involved.(Photo by YouTube Premium)RT: How would you describe the tone of the show, in comparison to your other projects, like Deadpool and Zombieland?Wernick: I think it s very similar. It s in and out of different tones, and it s a delicate dance. But real life, it bounces in and out of different tones; sometimes you re laughing, and sometimes you re crying, and sometimes you re getting your ass kicked, and sometimes you re kicking ass. That s real life.Heart is a big thing with all our projects. I think it s something that we try and mine because if you can get people to feel — if you can ideally get people to cry in the same episode that they re laughing — it s a pretty great accomplishment. And we think Sean, as brilliant as he is, has kind of captured that in a way that s really difficult to capture.

What Men Want (2019) 41% Generally speaking, romantic comedies are so formulaic that it usually takes something really out of the ordinary to stand out. Back in 2001, Nancy Meyers achieved great box office success less so with critics with the high-concept comedy What Women Want, which explored what would happen if an egocentric man were suddenly gifted with the ability to read the minds of women. That movie also benefited from a talented cast that included Helent Hunt, Marisa Tomei, Alan Alda, and a pre-controversy Mel Gibson. Fast forward to 2019, and we now have a gender-swapped version of the tale starring Taraji P. Henson as a female sports agent who, suddenly able to read men s thoughts, uses her newfound power to rise in her career and learn a few lessons about the opposite sex. Critics so far have responded to What Men Want about the same as they did to the original film, saying that its leads and lighthearted story are l

With Shadow and Bone, the new fantasy series set to hit Netflix on Friday, April 23, the mega streamer behind The Witcher and Fate: The Winx Saga is continuing on its mission to broaden and expand the groundwork HBO s Game of Thrones laid for genre television. The new show, which is based on the best-selling YA books by Leigh Bardugo and stars Jessie Mei Li, Ben Barnes, Freddy Carter, Archie Renaux, Amita Suman, and Zoë Wanamaker, tells the story of Alina Starkov, a seemingly average young girl who embarks on the quintessential hero s journey to realizing her true purpose, magical power, and resolve against unfathomable odds and a dastardly villain. Shadow and Bone immerses viewers in a place known as The Grishaverse, opening the door to a whole plethora of characters and plotlines familiar to the devoted fandom of the book series. But does the adaptation work? Here s what critics are saying about Shadow and Bone season 1 HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE BOOKS?(Photo by Attila Szvacsek, © Netflix)Packing more than one book’s worth of history, context and mythology into an eight episode season was always going to be unwieldy though and it does lead to some clunky exposition-filled scenes where a LOT of information is conveyed. – Fiona Underhill, JumpCut OnlineBringing in characters from Six of Crows, which technically takes place after the events of Shadow and Bone, was the right choice here. I initially had some concerns that this was going to feel like some strange add-on plot that doesn t really fit the rest of the story, but they do not feel shoehorned in at all. The writing makes this feel natural and they bring a lot to the series. The show weaves them into the story really well while also setting you up for a completely different storyline that will pay off in future seasons. – Marianna Neal, Impression BlendLet’s be real, though. Perfection is impossible to attain. However, this reviewer would argue that what writer/executive producer Eric Heisserer has created in Shadow and Bone, with the help of his team and author Leigh Bardugo, is close to perfection. And, for newcomers to the universe Bardugo has created, they’ll become immediate converts to the Grishaverse fandom. – Sarah Musnicky, Nightmarish ConjuringsHOW ARE JESSIE MEI LI AND BEN BARNES?(Photo by David Appleby, © Netflix)The fleeting moments of entertainment come courtesy of the cast. Li, who apparently burst onto the scene in a London production of All About Eve in 2019 and will appear in Edgar Wright’s highly anticipated Last Night in Soho, is an obvious future star, carrying her scenes with a blend of charisma and vulnerability that works. Alina becomes the center of the world when her power is revealed, simultaneously wanted, feared, and idolized, and Li deftly conveys that heady mix of adrenaline that comes from knowing one’s life has drastically changed forever with the associated fear that comes with that knowledge. – Brian Tallerico, The PlaylistGiven that Alina often served as a kind of placeholder for readers, Jessie Mei Li has perhaps the hardest task of anyone on the show, but thankfully, she s able to bring some fun and whimsy to what could have been a very sombre, heavy role The latter could also be said of General Kirigan, so it s reassuring to see that Ben Barnes is just as smouldering and handsome and charismatic and ahem, yes, he s great too, effectively balancing the moral extremes of his character without ever resorting to caricature. – David Opie, Digital SpyWHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE CAST?(Photo by © Netflix)Renaux is also extremely charming as Mal, bringing a balance to Li s portrayal of Alina that gives the characters relationship a tender quality. As for the Crows and Nina and Matthias, while they re given a little less to work with, they re just as compelling, with Young a particular standout as the roguish Jesper. He plays the mischievous foil to Carter s Kaz and Suman s Inej, both of whom are more serious (though about very different things), but all three have plenty of fun moments and their friendship is a highlight of the season. Lastly, Galligan and Skogman have plenty of chemistry as the antagonistic Nina and Matthias and their scenes, though most removed from the rest of the action, are a delight to watch as the characters engage in plenty of verbal sparring. – Molly Freeman, Screen RantYoung s confident gunslinger is a clear standout, as is Amita Suman as his knife-wielding compatriot Inej… – Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderThe two men on either side of her love triangle — Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux), Alina s childhood friend and a fellow soldier, and General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), the mysterious shadow summoner of the Grisha army — prove to be wildly different but incredibly compelling foils to her, with Barnes particularly shining in every scene he s in. The Dregs — leader Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), spy Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), and sharpshooter Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) — are also sure to become fan-favorites, with each bringing a charming, swashbuckling, but meaningful energy to the whole affair. – Jenna Anderson, ComicBook.comIS THE PRODUCTION VALUE UP TO PAR?The scenery, the costuming, the visuals of the powers — they are all incredibly expressed on the screen. This show is visually stunning no matter where you look. The clothing perfectly encompasses a feel of past times, but also a fantasy world that doesn’t truly exist. – Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyProduction-wise, it s a beautifully made show, with the best visual touch beyond the effects being the costumes designed by Wendy Partridge, which lean heavily on Russian influences to make this world feel distinct and special from other fantasy tales. – Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderOne of the biggest standouts is undoubtedly the gorgeous costumes, which balance extravagance and practicality with a massive sartorial flair, in a way that will hopefully inspire a flurry of fan-made cosplays. – Jenna Anderson, ComicBook.comANY FINAL THOUGHTS?(Photo by David Appleby, © Netflix)With its magical, orphaned, chosen-one hero (hello, Harry Potter), its story of a young woman destined to cause revolution while caught between her childhood bestie and a dashing, untrustworthy incomer (hey there, Hunger Games) and its dangerous kingdom of backstabbers (Game Of Thrones, we meet again), Shadow And Bone has plenty of familiar echoes. But it’s very watchable, with a compelling world and characters that could help it become a fantasy favourite in its own right. Ben Travis, Empire MagazineYou can watch the first season for the twisty world-building, Wendy Partridge s lovely costumes, several enjoyable performances and the comfort of its reliable YA plotting. Just don t expect to immediately understand everything and definitely don t expect everything to come together by the end. Daniel Fienberg, Hollywood ReporterShadow and Bone is a perfectly cast, exquisitely-constructed fantasy dream, one that will find ways to charm both new and existing fans. Jenna Anderson, ComicBook.comShadow and Bone premieres Friday, April 23, on Netflix.

The film traces the making of the series’ upcoming eighth season, and is set to air May 26, one week after the series final season finishes airing. Directed by British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, The Last Watch promises “unprecedented access” while the cast and crew “contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers,” according to HBO. Game of Thrones showrunner D. B. Weiss, producer Bernadette Caulfield, and writer David Benioff are executive producers on the documentary. The Last Watch will be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand on May 26.In other Thrones brand-extension news, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Licensing Retail will release the latest Game of Thrones beer nationwide in early April. Patrick Melrose received six, while Bodyguard and The Little Drummer Girl each received five, BAFTA announced on Thursday. See all of the nominees on BAFTA s site here.British media reports note, however, that the spy comedy from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, which stars Jodie Comer as assassin Villanelle and Sandra Oh as MI5 officer Eve Posner, violates the awards rules that state that to be eligible, a series must have had the worldwide premiere in the UK and a UK broadcaster must have primary control over it. Killing Eve was commissioned by BBC America, however, which is co-owned by the BBC and U.S. cable network AMC. According to Deadline, Paramount Television has acquired the rights to SATC author Candace Bushnell’s latest book, Is There Still Sex in the City?, that examines love and dating after 50. Bushnell will write a pilot script and executive produce alongside Liza Chasin and Robyn Meisinger. The most recent effort in the franchise, CW series The Carrie Diaries, starred AnnaSophia Robb, focused on a teenage Carrie Bradshaw, and was canceled after two seasons.Pose Picks Patti(Photo by FX)Pose executive Producer Ryan Murphy announced at PaleyFest last weekend that there will be a “time leap” between seasons 1 and 2 of the FX series about the New York City ball scene. The FBI and Department of Justice were even called upon to review the matter. One insider tied to Empire told Deadline, “Things are so unclear and there is a feeling that this isn’t over, that there’s more to come.” The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is also reportedly working with law enforcement to investigate a hate-filled letter that the actor received on the set of the Fox drama. If it is discovered that the letter was sent by the actor to himself, he could face 5-20 years of jail time.Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has been critical of the deal prosecutors agreed to in the attack, is sending Smollett a bill for 0,000 for police overtime. In the meantime, the actor is nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series NAACP Image Award to be presented on Saturday. In this new role, she is torn between gunning for the win and doing the right thing.  The cast also includes: Lenz (One Tree Hill), Simon Kassianides (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Eli Goree (Riverdale), Isabel Arraiza (The Oath), and Chantel Riley (Wynonna Earp). The summer ensemble drama hails from UCP. Executive producers include Suits creator and executive producer Aaron Korsh, showrunner Daniel Arkin, and Doug Liman, David Bartis, and Gene Klein of Hypnotic (Suits, Nightflyers, Impulse).Pearson premieres Wednesday, July 17 at 10 p.m. on USA Network.Plus, a bonus exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the series with its stars! With a growing sense of awareness in the United States of the prejudices and hate crimes inflicted upon Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders, it’s an interesting time for the premiere of The CW’s Kung Fu.A new take on the martial arts franchise often associated with the David Carradine–starring Western from the 1970s, this version focuses on Olivia Liang’s Nicky Shen. A Chinese American college dropout from San Francisco, Nicky ditches the life her parents had planned for her and ends up practicing martial arts in a Shaolin monastery – until tragedy strikes and she ends up back home just when her family might need her the most.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)In the series, which premieres April 7 and is created by Lost and Hawaii: Five-0 vet Christina M. Kim, Nicky is seen protecting herself and those closest to her with jabs, strikes, spins and kicks while barely breaking a sweat (and sometimes to the surprise of her siblings; Shannon Dang’s tech-wiz Althea and Jon Prasida’s medical student Ryan).“It definitely conflates my own sense of self confidence,” Liang admitted during a recent phone interview with Rotten Tomatoes.“Especially with the things that are happening in the world right now with Asian hate crimes and violence, I find myself walking on the street and being, like, OK what fight choreography did I learn that I can translate if need be at the drop of a hat right now?” she said.Fight training is a relatively new skill set for Liang. Although she has a background in dance, martial arts was a completely new art form for her when she was cast as Nicky. Training began when she was still busy at her previous job on The CW’s Legacies. That Atlanta-set show’s stunt coordinator, David Morizot, showed her basic moves between takes before she worked with stunt coordinator Sam Ly to prep for the Kung Fu pilot. Then it was an aggressive three-to five-hours-a-day schedule for two weeks where  “they molded me and they whipped me into shape,” she said.(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Although she’s not allowed to do any of the intense wire work lest she get injured and cause a delay in production, she said, “you can maybe expect to see at least 65% me” on screen during the fight scenes and that “I try to do as much as possible because it s also just really fun and really empowering and I feel really cool when I do it.” But she gives credit to her stunt double, Megan Hui, and others in that department “if I ever look cool and badass and powerful during a fight scene.”The show also both fits in with the other programs on The CW and stands out from them. It’s one of the few options on that channel that concentrates on a woman and is the only one with a predominately AAPI cast. And, although Kung Fu is about a woman crimefighter and counts Arrowverse kingpin Greg Berlanti as one of its executive producers, Liang’s lead doesn’t come with either superhero powers (like The Flash or Supergirl) or – depending on the season of Batwoman family connections or the luck of finding the high-tech suit of a lost vigilante.“I think it s pretty cool that Nicky’s just a regular person who has a skill set and wants to use it for good,” Liang said. “She s not a superhero and she s not necessarily wanting to be a hero, but she is very heroic.”(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)Kung Fu also has the hefty task of demystifying the world of martial arts, an art form that Americans may find alluring and stereotypical when we see it portrayed by people of Asian descent (like in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in Bruce Lee’s films) or as agro when portrayed by white men (like in TV series like Cobra Kai, Arrow, or even the original Kung Fu).“The great thing about our show is the diversity all around that s happening,” Liang said, mentioning the Kim-led diverse writers room in particular and that she and other cast members have been reading Charles Yu’s National Book Award-winning Interior Chinatown, which discusses both immigrant Asian stories and TV’s depiction of them.“I think, because we’ve so long been on the receiving end of this voyeuristic [depiction] of ‘the Orient’ and the mysticism of Asian-ness or otherness, we really know how it feels .. to be under that lens. We know what we don’t want,” Liang said.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)The show also brings up the question of what is a stereotype and what is part of a culture. In the first episode, Nicky is angry that her mother’s (Tan Kheng Hua s Mei-Li) big dream for her was that her daughter attend Harvard. This could be perceived as trumpeting a tired trope, but wouldn’t most parents want their kids to get good grades and go to a respected university?“The interesting thing about stereotypes, from my perspective, is that sometimes they are true,” Liang said, adding that she had “kind of a Tiger Mom growing up [who] did want me to be a genius” and that “I took Abacus lessons for some reason.”“I think the problem with stereotypes is if that s the only thing we know about that person and that s the only thing that they re defined by,” Liang said, explaining that Mei-Li may come across as a Tiger Mom in the first episode, “but we also get to see her backstory and get to see her care for her kids and where she s coming from.”With Nicky, Liang said, “She was the kid who was pressured to go to Harvard and to be everything that her parents wanted her be [but] we also get to see her break out of that. We get to see her forge her own path, fall in love, fight with her siblings. We see a full life; not just the stereotypes.”Kung Fu premieres at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 on The CW.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

bob手机体育下载 Stars. They’re just like us: also deeply fascinated by true-crime stories, like the one at the center of The Act. The series, which is Certified Fresh at 92% on the Tomatometer, is based on a Buzzfeed News article by writer Michelle Dean called “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom Murdered,” which was subsequently turned into the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. The Act star Chloë Sevigny was so engrossed by the documentary that she watched it twice in a row.“I was so flabbergasted,” Sevigny told Rotten Tomatoes — a natural reaction to hearing the full story of Dee Dee and Gypsy Blanchard. The Story(Photo by Brownie Harris/Hulu)On the surface, Dee Dee (played in The Act by Patricia Arquette) seemed to be a devoted mother caring for her incredibly sick daughter, Gypsy (Joey King). In reality, it turns out that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen by proxy and forced her daughter to shave her head, use a wheelchair, and undergo unnecessary medical treatment. Eventually, Gypsy (and her secret online boyfriend) killed Dee Dee.Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca, who created the series alongside Dean, said of the many questions he had after reading Dean’s story, there was one that was most important to answer when turning the saga into a scripted drama.“How does this happen in real life? The important thing for me to explore in working on the show was what was that experience like,” Antosca told Rotten Tomatoes. “What was it like for Gypsy to live in that house for all those years, and participate in the deception that has so many layers? It s such a complicated experience, and that was the most important thing to dig into for me. And, also, to be accurate about what happened: the fact that she underwent all these medical procedures, that she had her teeth extracted, she had this feeding tube, that it was medical abuse on a day-to-day basis. It was important that we portray the truth of what happened to her.”The Show(Photo by CZ Post/Hulu)Antosca came to the project from the horror world, having created Syfy’s horror anthology Channel Zero and written several episodes of Hannibal.“My experience is in horror, but it s always human horror, and that s what I m interested in: human horror, psychological horror,” he said. “I don t feel like I was playing in a completely different sandbox here than I was with Channel Zero or Hannibal, because great horror always puts character and psychology first. And The Act, on some level, is a profound psychological horror story.”It’s also grounded thanks to Dean’s extensive research on Dee Dee and Gypsy’s lives and medical records that became her thorough 8,500-plus word article. Since the facts are so well-documented, the story isn’t treated as a mystery, but rather more of a character study.“The story is so widely read that this show can t be a mystery in a traditional sense,” he said. “Not whodunit. It s more existential than that. It s how could this happen, and what was it like to live through that? As a storyteller, and as a viewer, and as a reader of an article, that s what is really interesting to me and compelling to me.”The Characters(Photo by CZ Post/Hulu)Arquette and King portray the mother and daughter at the center of the story, and both underwent serious physical transformations for the role (including King shaving her head).“For Dee Dee, we needed somebody who obviously had incredible range, but also who could be very grounded and human while playing this woman who did monstrous things,” Antosca said. “So we didn t want her to worry about being likable, but she had to have an inherent humanity.”Sevigny plays Dee Dee and Gypsy’s neighbor, Mel, an amalgam of several real-life neighbors.“The challenge was that truth is stranger than fiction, and this story, there s so much there,” she said. “That s why it was exciting that we got to do eight hours of a deep delve into these characters and these people s relationships.”Sevigny had to make her character as relatable as possible, especially in the middle of such an unbelievable story.“When you think about Chloe s roles, they re so diverse. From Kids to Zodiac, she plays so many different kinds of people,” Antosca said. “We felt like for the neighbors — when you hear this story, you go, ‘How could people have been fooled? How were they so dumb?’ And the fact is that they weren t [dumb]. They were just regular people like you and me, and if our neighbor said ‘My daughter s sick and she s in a wheelchair,’ you wouldn t question it. So it was important that the neighbors, who are basically the audience s surrogates, be real, regular people who are perceptive, and smart, and just trying to live their lives while this deception is going on right under their noses, so that we feel their sense of betrayal once the truth comes out.”Sevigny, who won a Golden Globe for her role in Big Love and makes a case for more trophies here, also drew inspiration from family members in other true-crime documentaries.“I did a whole binge of Making a Murderer when it first started, and I was thinking a lot about the aunts and cousins and different women you would see in some of the footage,” she said. “Just the women in those parts of the country that are so hard-working and can t catch a break and how they re so hardened by their circumstances, and I was trying to infuse Mel with that kind of person that you see in those sorts of documentaries.”The Illness(Photo by Brownie Harris/Hulu)While Gypsy might appear to be the sick one, the truth is that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a caregiver makes up or even causes illness in their ward. It’s a disease that has been portrayed in pop culture before (most recently in 2018’s HBO miniseries Sharp Objects), and it’s something that can quickly turn from relatable quirk to disturbing affliction.Dean found in her research that some scientists believe “there was a spike in Munchausen once the Internet came around and people could look up reams of medical information at home in front of the television,” she told reporters on a Television Critics Association panel about the series in February. “And I think we’ve all had that experience where you’re having an ache or a pain and you go on WebMD and you think, ‘Oh, I have cancer.’”And the way Munchausen moms in particular suffer from the illness means that there’s also still that natural instinct to protect and care for their child, and sometimes their lies take over what they rationally should know to be the truth.“In order to be a successful fraudster you usually have to believe the fraud. You fall for it yourself,” Dean said during the panel. “I think actually that’s the answer to the question, Why are people so intrigued by Munchausen? It’s the question of, does the mother really believe that the child is sick or not? And in speaking to Munchausen experts, we learned they don’t know the answer to that question either.”But why is pop culture so interested in Munchausen by proxy now?“I think it s part of our ongoing fascination with motherhood, what a mother should be. The mother as a monster sometimes,” Antosca told Rotten Tomatoes. “And I think it s a role that incredibly complicated to explore. We all have interesting and complicated relationships with our mothers. Every mother makes mistakes, and does the wrong thing out of love sometimes, and this is such an extreme example of that. I think it s universally fascinating.”The FutureThe Act was ordered at Hulu as an anthology series, but Antosca said he isn’t necessarily sure he has the right idea for another season just yet.“Honestly, I pursued this show and wanted to make this show because of Dee Dee and Gypsy s story. If we do another season, it would have to be another really complex human relationship. I m not interested in doing a story about a murder, or about a crime. It has to be about the people behind the crime,” he said. “So I would love to do another season. I don t know what it is yet. I m completely focused on the first one now. We re still editing the last couple episodes, but if we did another season, it would have to be about regular people in America searching for the American dream and going to a very dark place because of it.”Sevigny has moved between film and television for nearly her entire career, and she’s planning to continue doing that. In 2019, she appears in Netflix series Russian Doll in addition to The Act, as well as several feature films, including Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die with Adam Driver and Tilda Swinton — “It s a zombie comedy. Also Selena Gomez is in it,” she said. She also submitted a short she directed to Cannes, and is currently filming Queen and Slim, directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe and James Frey.“I love making movies, and I hope forever to make movies,” she said. “It s nice, though, that there s so much challenging work being made for TV and I hope to continue to work on great projects like I have been. I like cruising between the two. And also directing. I ve directed a few shorts now and am hopefully going to develop a feature this year.”Hulu releases new episodes of The Act every Wednesday.Like this?
