(Photo by Paramount Pictures)The movie Airplane!, which celebrates its 40th anniversary on July 2, is routinely regarded as the crème de la crème of spoof films.Filmmakers Jim Abrahams and brothers David Zucker and Jerry Zucker’s goofy comedy is meant to be a send-up of the Airport movies of the 1970s which capitalized on large star-studded casts and even larger theatrics as well as other films. It s Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer, and decades after its release, it still regularly makes it onto people’s lists of favorite comedies, even as the spoof comedy has fallen out of vogue.Simply put, Airplane! works because it covers something that is deathly serious  an airline disaster but doesn’t take itself too seriously. In addition to an inflatable cockpit autopilot named Otto and Lloyd Bridges’ increasingly frantic control tower supervisor he picked the wrong week to quit smoking, drinking, taking amphetamines, and sniffing glue there’s a running joke centered on whether Leslie Nielsen s Dr. Rumack understands the difference between the woman’s name Shirley and the adverb “surely.”But, even prospective first-time viewers who might balk at the spoiler-heavy paragraph above would clearly have gotten a sense of what kind of film Airplane! is from its title alone. Or, more specifically, from the exclamation point in its title.“An exclamation point is usually used for a different meaning… like a strength or importance or [to get you to] pay attention,” says Mike Kaplan, a film marketing strategist also known for his extensive collection of vintage movie posters. “With Airplane!, as I remember it, it’s a satire on the other movies that have used it. It’s an interesting jumping-off point for sure.”Kaplan, who worked on posters and campaigns for films like A Clockwork Orange, says it’s not necessarily a bad thing to see punctuation used in cinematic titles or posters as long as it “works organically” and doesn’t have the “feeling that it s been manipulated.” The point is to not be bothered by it, to almost forget it’s there. Before we spoke, he said he never paid much attention to the use of the symbol. He then remembered he’d worked on a couple campaigns that used it, including director Lindsay Anderson’s 1973 dramedy, O Lucky Man!, which stars Malcolm McDowell. Kaplan participated in a documentary about Anderson in which McDowell tells the story that the film was originally meant to be called Lucky Man, but that Anderson changed the title after reading the treatment because, Kaplan says, “that’s signifying it s more important, and that a title like Lucky Man could mean… you’re lucky for different things. But O Lucky Man! gives it a universality and importance, almost a philosophical statement.” Kaplan says he remembers the exclamation point coming in around when he did the film’s first title treatment. Anderson, whom he recalls had distinct handwriting and always wrote with red Pentel pens, responded back by noting a red exclamation point next to the title. Kaplan says it was “just the icing on the cake.”(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)As with O Lucky Man!, the exclamation point in Airplane! does a lot of the heavy lifting from a marketing standpoint. The symbol is almost shouting to the audience that the film doesn’t take itself too seriously and that some zany hijinks are in store. But this wasn’t always the case. The exclamation point used to be revered, and it was only used to signify grandeur and grab your attention. You see it in the 1960s musicals Hello, Dolly! and Oliver!.Robert Lee, a musical theatre writer who is on the faculty of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, says he doesn’t know for sure why either of those two musicals has an exclamation point in its title, although he points out that both are set in the 1800s and “trade in nostalgia.” He wonders if they’re there to channel “old-time theater handbills” from an era when literacy rates were lower and when the exclamation point was used as a sort of punctuational carnival barker on posters to grab your attention. He also adds that both are titles derived from the leads’ names and songs sung about them. Both were also known for show-stopping numbers, and their trailers create the feeling that these are films the whole family cannot miss (even though the latter’s focus on starving London orphans isn’t exactly a happy-go-lucky topic). They’re also both based on stage productions, a medium that has a long love affair with the symbol. The double-punctuated musical revue Oh! Calcutta!, which debuted Off-Broadway in 1969, has what a 2015 New York Daily News article describes as “a pair of grammatical jazz hands.” The article quotes a branding specialist who says the title for that production works because it brings urgency, excitement and humor.”(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Abrahams and the Zucker brothers wrote the screenplay for their comedic masterpiece based on the 1957 film Zero Hour!, a World War II drama from director Hall Bartlett that takes itself extremely seriously (the Zuckers bought the rights to the film, so there’s no issue of copyright infringement). A a representative for David Zucker confirms that the filmmakers kept the exclamation point in their film’s title for that reason. They would go on to use it for other screwball spoofs like Top Secret! (a parody on both musicals and Cold War-era spy films) and their TV series Police Squad! (a knock on cop dramas), the precursor to the Naked Gun films.Henry Fuhrmann is a professor at University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism and a former chief of the Los Angeles Times copy editing desk – where he had a reputation, among myself and others, for his extreme distaste for the exclamation point. During our interview, he thinks of classic front-page headlines where the exclamation point was unavoidable, such as the one for D-Day that screamed Invasion! But he also references the F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: “Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.”(Photo by Douglas Aircraft Co./Los Angeles Times)He says that exclamation points were usually thought to be unnecessary in formal writing, because if a sentence “has the right active, strong verb, it will connote the tenor of the drama that you’re trying to say.”Fuhrmann says it’s a testament to Airplane! that not including the exclamation point is “an obvious error to anyone” because “you just know it’s a part of the title. Brands like Yahoo!, which also uses the punctuation symbol, do not get the same kind of respect.“It definitely works in Airplane!,” he says, because “it s just a small thing with potentially great power, and that’s what makes punctuation so interesting.”But the advent of social media has made us crave an even stronger hit of punctuation endorphins. Fuhrmann points to Gretchen McCulloch’s 2019 book Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language. There, McCulloch argues that our language has evolved so that the exclamation point connotes “warmth or sincerity, rather than just excitement.” The Comedy Central series Corporate, a dark satire about white-collar desk jockeys, directly addresses this. A broken keyboard forces one of the leads to stop using exclamation points in his emails, resulting in his bosses feeling personally attacked.pic.twitter.com/EKYFzrL95B comedycentral (@ComedyCentral) February 4, 2019However, McCulloch equates the overuse of exclamation points to “hyperbolic adjectives” like the word awesome that “lose their force through overuse.” These days, an exclamation point just doesn t convey as much as it used to. Does this mean that any potential remake of Airplane! will inevitably require multiple exclamation points in its title? Surely you can t be serious.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Netflix (stream) Vudu (rent/own)Airplane! was released on July 2, 1980. Where do you go after Game of Thrones? For the creators of the hit HBO fantasy series, it s Star Wars and now Netflix. Plus, this year s Emmy Awards show is going hostless. Bold. But perhaps not as bold as the timing of FX s next American Crime Story  topic.Game of Thrones Creators Find Their New TV HomeDavid Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an overall deal to develop new films and series for Netflix pic.twitter.com/57gLQOSTLE See What s Next (@seewhatsnext) August 7, 2019Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their new home: Netflix. The duo has signed what sources told Deadline is a massive deal somewhere in the nine-figure range, after being courted by six different studios, including HBO. We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home, the pair said in a statement. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same 80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them. The duo is also set to produce a series of Star Wars films, with the first expected in 2022.RELATED: 5 Places Star Wars Could Go in the 2020s There Won t Be an Emmys Host This Year(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Fox boss Charlie Collier confirmed to reporters at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour that, like the Oscars, there will be no host for the 2019 Emmys. Later that day, former Golden Globes host Amy Poehler said she understands the reluctance of people to sign on for such a massive gig. Those shows are a beast and the people who produce those shows have a specific, hard job, she said. But without a host, It should be a fun party. Think about how fun it is to go to a party, and you don t know who s throwing it. Your brain will probably decide who the host is. Could the New Season of American Crime Story Influence the 2020 Election?(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Immediately after FX announced that Impeachment would be the theme for the third season of American Crime Story, will focus on Bill Clinton s impeachment through the eyes of the women involved in the case (starring Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky), and will premiere in late September 2020, an online backlash began denouncing the timing of the series. FX boss John Landgraf hit back at critics of the timing, saying that it s scheduled then because people will be interested in this right around the presidential election. I believe very, very strongly in what we’re making. I’ve read it. I think it’s great, Landgraf said. I don’t believe it’s going to determine who’s the next president of the United States. I think that’s a little hysterical, from my standpoint, somebody saying that that’s going to influence the presidential election. And from my standpoint, I am insistent that I’m going to support artists who want to make great art, and they want to put it at the time and place where people are going to watch it. I will stand up here as long as I’m here, and I will stand for artists, and I will stand for art. And no one will shout us down in terms of you saying, You can’t make that art, or You can’t schedule at the time that most people want to watch it. ”Fleabag Takes Top Honors at Television Critics Association Awards Breezy, isn t it? Phoebe Waller-Bridge commented to journalists Laura Prudom and Emma Dibdin, who both wore her black Fleabag season 2 dinner scene outfit to present the Television Critics Association award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy to the series. I don’t think these guys look in the past very often, unless it’s to help moving forward. I think they will continue to move forward, but this is just it’s a long journey that I don’t think is ever going to be over, Ackles said . I think we’re just going to go away for a while. How long, I don’t know. Cracked Padalecki, And then 15 more seasons. But while Ackles noted there’s a running joke on the set that this is Supernatural, and nothing ever stays dead, executive producer Andrew Dabb said that he and the writers are planning a definitive ending. We’re looking at this as a true ending. And in a true ending, people can’t keep coming back over and over again. Through various machinations, some of the things that our guys have relied on to keep themselves going and going and going no matter what are going to go away. And they’re going to be facing life or death. Really, they face it a lot, but this time it’s for real, Dabb said. The Boys Is One of Amazon s Biggest Shows Ever(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)In the two weeks following its release, Amazon superhero series The Boys has already become one of the streamer s most-watched series. From executive producers Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Preacher executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Boys tells the story of entitled, dangerous superheroes managed by the nefarious Vought Corporation and the vigilantes seeking vengeance for wrongs committed by members of the Seven, the crème de la crème of the Vought superhero machine. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said the series surpassed our predictions for viewing in its first two weeks, and has become one of our most watched Amazon Original series by our Prime Video customers.” The series also became one of the most binged series of 2019 with Amazon Prime Video customers, Amazon reported in a release. The first season is Certified Fresh at 81% on the Tomatometer with 74 reviews. Season 2 is now in production.RELATED:  Why The Boys’ Twisted Take on the Superhero Genre Is So Deeply Satisfying Teen Sleuth Nancy Drew Gets a Supernatural UpdateThe Nancy Drew novels have always contained a possible supernatural element that always turned out to be of human nature. But on The CW s dark series featuring the classic teen detective, that supernatural element might be a little more real. There are ghosts in our show, executive producer Noga Landau said. The way to really look at it is that most of the things that are supernatural are rooted in something that’s happening mysteriously in the real world. Everything is rooted in emotion or some mystery amongst the living that has been unresolved. And while there will be a season-long mystery the characters solve, there will also be some case-of-the-week elements. The case in the pilot is the case that we will be unraveling through the course of the season,  executive producer Melinda Hsu Taylor said, but every week there’s going to be a feel of, like, Oh, this is the story this week. We’ve got this part of the mission to unfold, and another little mini mystery will become revealed to us through the things that we’re doing in that episode. I think it’s a really satisfying season-long mystery, but every week is going to be very satisfying as well. When Will Batwoman Don Her Wig?(Photo by JSquared Photography/The CW)When the character of Batwoman was first introduced to The CW s Arrowverse in the 2018 Elseworlds crossover, she was wearing the character s trademark red wig. But in the pilot for the CW series, which takes place before the events of Elseworlds, there s no wig in sight. That’s going to come up in episode 3, when she really embraces her role as Batwoman, executive producer Caroline Dries said. She puts on that suit, as we see in the pilot, because she’s trying to scare her enemy. And she’s not necessarily trying to become Batwoman. She’s just trying to be disguise her identity and be a fearful opponent to her nemesis. So she it’s a gradual story. It’s an origin story, so it’s a gradual realization of, Oh, actually, I’m going to need my own identity.' In the upcoming crossover, the epic five-show Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dries worked hard to make sure the story line for Batwoman still made sense in the universe of the series. [What] was really important to me as we were breaking the crossover is that I want to keep the tone of our show in Gotham very grounded, she said. We are just starting out, and our characters — it’s not normal for them to interact with aliens and travel to different universes and stuff like that, so that is the first thing I brought up to the major writers’ room as we were breaking the crossover. How Will Black Lightning Join the Arrowverse?(Photo by Josh Stringer/The CW )In addition to the whopping five shows joining The CW s annual Arrowverse crossover — Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman —  Crisis on Infinite Earths will also introduce characters from the network s other superhero series, Black Lightning. Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim said it was always the goal to make this crossover the biggest ever. Ever since we started talking about doing Crisis — and we started it last year — the goal has always been how many different corners of the DC Universe can we touch? We already say, It’s not Crisis on CW, or It’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. And Black Lightning just makes so much sense. I’m a huge fan of that show, and I’m a longtime fan of that comic character. What it really came down to was Salim Akil deciding whether he wanted to do it. He and I had a great conversation last week talking about Black Lightning being part of the crossover. I think we’re both really jazzed and really excited that there are some phenomenal possibilities here. 8.47.7 1月喜迎(Photo by Warner Bros./ courtesy Everett Collection)All 8 Zack Snyder Movies, Ranked by TomatometerDirector Zack Snyder was among the frontlines in the battle to bring back the zombie, his 2004 Certified Fresh remake of Dawn of the Dead nestling in snugly with the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Land of the Dead. But it was with his second feature that he developed a signature style: 300, combining a comic-book palette with unflinching machismo and fetishistic style. The adaptation of the Frank Miller comic was a pop-culture phenomenon, and helped establish the gritty Warner Bros. look on comic-book movies that started with V for Vendetta and was furthered by The Dark Knight. There was no stopping Snyder now, as he next tackled Watchmen, once thought a graphic novel too dense and troubling for film. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga Hoole and Sucker Punch were stepping stones into the world most know Snyder for: As the creative guide behind Superman movies, and the DC Extended Universe beyond. Man of Steel was a big enough box office hit for the studio, and if audiences had some qualms about the direction of the character, their curiosity was nonetheless piqued for the next movie. That would, of course, end up being the biggest title bout of comicdom: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ben Affleck put on the suit, the first to do so after Christian Bale in his Dark Knight trilogy run, and went mano-a-mano with Henry Cavill. A single word may have put this quarrel between two mama s boys to bed, which opened the path to the next movie referred to in BvS s subtitle. Justice League arrived, pulling in Gal Gadot, who would go on to make the Certified Fresh Wonder Woman, and introducing the new movie versions of The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Justice League s disappointing Tomatometer and box office have made Release the Snyder cut! a clarion call for the online hordes, referring to the supposed three-hour version of the movie that existed  before studio executives and meddling forced it down to its current 120-minute runtime.Snyder has since lessened his presence within the DCEU (he s still a producer on Wonder Woman 1984), and is returning to where it all began with Army of the Dead, an upcoming Netflix movie starring Dave Bautista about mercenaries who pull off a heist in Vegas during a zombie outbreak. And now, we re pulling a heist ourselves as we sneak into the past and bringing up every Zack Snyder movie ranked by Tomatometer!

Horror’s consistent focus on stories that double as morality tales often leads to protagonists who are dutiful and serious, leaving a big blank spot in charisma and personality. But that’s why god invented the sidekick. They are the color to the protagonist’s black-and-white, the fiery, funny fools who often drive the story’s complications, as the protagonist runs around putting out all the fires.Because a fair number of horror films feature female leads, many of these sidekicks are also female characters. Sometimes they bolster the protagonist’s confidence, sometimes tear it down. Occasionally they take on traits of a villain, only to be revealed as the true center of the film. Often they perish, and their deaths trigger an extra significance: If this person with quick wit and endearing flaws can die, then things are about to get serious. One of the greatest – to our mind – is Barb, played by Margot Kidder, in the original Black Christmas. As we prepare for the release of Blumhouse s Black Christmas remake this week, here are 15 of the most colorful sidekicks of horror cinema.Barb in Stranger in the House (1974) 71%(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection )Played by Margot KidderVery few horror films possess the kind of joy Bob Clark’s Black Christmas emits when resident alcoholic and prankster Barb (Margot Kidder) patiently explains to a befuddled cop that her phone number begins with the word “fellatio.” Nor do they revel in a character’s tangential knowledge as much as when Barb interjects with some serious turtle-sex facts while a father is grieving his missing daughter. Barb may not be the final girl, but she fills our stockings with delightful coal.Tatum in Scream (1996) 79%(Photo by © Dimension Films )Played by Rose McGowanWes Craven consistently delivered some of the best female sidekicks, but Tatum (Rose McGowan) earns a spot for her 1990s “girl power” feminism that had her trying to convince her boyfriend, Casey (Matthew Lillard), that the new Woodsboro slasher could be a woman, because girls can do anything boys can do. Her kid-sister vibe – she’s literally Dewy’s kid sister – makes her a sparkling verbal sparrer, and she’s talking s t right up until the very garage-door end.Annie and Lynda in Halloween (1978) 96%(Photo by © Compass International Pictures/ Courtesy: Everett Collection)Played by Nancy Kyes and P.J. Soles Before slashers were a thing, John Carpenter and producer Debra Hill’s prototype for the genre showcased the possibilities for fully fleshed-out sidekicks with sporty Lynda and sarcastic Annie, the bad and badder devils on Laurie Strode’s shoulders. They poke fun at the latter’s virginal purity with the kind of ribbing realistic for angsty teen girls. Both act as comic relief, proving there can and should be more than one funnywoman in the group.Pam in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 89%(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection )Played by Teri McMinnTobe Hooper specifically asked for actress Teri McMinn’s costume to be backless and short to show off most of her “meat,” giving her a visually vulnerable feel in this slaughterhouse classic. Pam is a small role, but McMinn fills her out with a genuine openness and curiosity, a young woman of the perilous 1970s whose kind and trusting nature leads her to disaster.Juno Kaplan in The Descent (2005) 86%(Photo by © Lionsgate)Played by Natalie MendozaJuno is both the sidekick and the foil of Neil Marshall’s spelunking disaster. It’s her fiery, fierce, and selfish nature that draws her estranged best friend Sarah into the unexplored caves, but also the spirit that gives Sarah the will to leave her as bait and escape. Natalie Mendoza’s empathetic performance speaks to what one is capable of when scared, but not so much that her fate doesn’t seem a little fitting.Lambert in Alien (1979) 98%(Photo by © 20th Century Fox / courtesy Everett Collection)Played by Veronica CartwrightJoan Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) was the navigator of the USCSS Nostromo, and she spent just as much time trying to guide the crew of the ship in the right direction. She was the first to say exploring that distress call was a bad idea and the first to say they should “get the hell out of here.” Her hysterics are a natural and appropriate reaction to an alien attack and an extension of the audience’s reactions, so Lambert becomes the lens through which we view the film.Jeryline in Tales From the Crypt Presents Demon Knight (1995) 38%(Photo by MCA/Universal Pictures/ Courtesy: Everett Collection.)Played by Jada Pinkett-SmithJeryline (Jada Pinkett-Smith) may be a criminal on work release at a rural hotel, but she’s got more smarts and morals than many. Demon Knight is the rare horror movie willing to off its protagonist, and Jeryline steps up from sidekick to lead, showing off her cunning by using the demon’s Don Juan charm against him and ultimately saving the night.Tina Gray in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 95%(Photo by © New Line Cinema)Played by Amanda WyssIf you’d only watched the first act of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, you’d think Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss) were the protagonist of the film, but she’s in actuality the sidekick and catalyst for the film series. She exudes both vulnerability and strength, which is why her iconic demise and subsequent use as a puppet for Freddy Krueger’s mind tricks is a huge punch to the gut.Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) 44%(Photo by © Columbia/courtesy Everett Collection)Played by Sarah Michelle GellarThe key to Helen Shivers’ success as a sidekick is her unabashed and shameless vanity. (Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)What are you most proud of in your career so far?I m one of the guest critics on a BBC radio show here called Mark Kermode s and Simon Mayo s Film Review. It s live radio. My whole life, I have suffered from pretty bad anxiety and stage fright. I, at one point, wanted to be an actor, and I think the fear really stopped me from pursuing that properly. And so, being able to do that and go on live radio and speak to many, many people at the same time is terrifying but satisfying beyond words. It has been such an amazing, surreal experience. I just feel very proud of myself that I m able to do that.I d imagine that, as a writer, you spend so much time delicately thinking over your words – to be live sounds terrifying.Yeah. You can t take it back, that s the thing. If you write something and you hate it, you delete it. Radio, you say something, you can t take it back. It s totally terrifying. What is the hardest review that you ve ever written – or, if it was on the radio, delivered live? The one I immediately thought of was just last year: I saw Cats and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – it was a double bill. My deadline for both of the reviews was the next morning. I really had to stay up all night writing about what, for me, were two incredibly surreal experiences.Cats, on a very obvious level – I feel like everyone had a very strange experience with that. But, also, I am a huge, huge Star Wars fan, and so, Rise of Skywalker was like three Christmases at the same time. But, then, the film didn t really do the things I was hoping it would do, so I was dealing with all the emotions of that. That was just a really strange night. What’s your favorite classic film?Wilder s The Apartment, because there’s something I love about just semi-optimistic endings – because that also has that feeling of everything could be terrible. You could be a loser and have nothing. You just feel like you ve got nothing going on. But, there s other people just like you, and maybe you ll find them, and together you can be a little bit less of a loser. I don t know why, but that, to me, is just like “yes.” That is how I want to see the world. That makes me feel great about everything.Do you have advice for critics who are still finding their voice?I think just try to be honest with yourself, because that s what I find so hard about this industry. This is the thing. You are on a weekly basis exposing yourself to the world – not exposing yourself, because that sounds really dodgy, but exposing your soul to the world every week. You have to be quite vulnerable to do that. It s scary, especially when it s a film that is about something very personal or something controversial, and you re really having to make your stand with it.It s so easy to feel trapped by that and to feel scared, that you don t want to be honest with yourself because you re worried that, “Oh, that s going to be different from how everyone else thinks. I m going to go against the status quo. I m going to stand out in a good way or a bad way.”Just have the courage to be like, This is my honest opinion. I stand by it. I am being true to myself. This is my voice. Stick by it. If people are being mean, just block them on Twitter, and find nice people who will support you.Is there someone in your life who isn t a critic, whose opinion on movies you really admire?I would say my best friend, because when I m having those anxieties about a review – and I think that my opinion might be terrible and stupid, and everyone will make fun of me – I go to my best friend. I will describe my opinion, and even if he hasn t seen the film, he s so good at listening and giving his take. We have quite similar taste in films, but in the ways that they vary, I find really interesting. We re always wanting to talk about that because we have quite similar personalities. But, it s like, why do we have such different tastes on a handful of specific movies?

Ghcxuf (Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)The X-Wing s pilot turns out to be the Jedi who Grogu contacted back on Tython and his superior skills make quick work of the Dark Troopers (much to Gideon s dismay). Arriving on the bridge, the Jedi is revealed to be Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who agrees to protect the child and train him.The bond between Grogu and Djarin is strong and the two have an emotional goodbye, complete with Djarin taking his helmet off so the child can see the face of his father. The Jedi departs with the child.Sometime later, Fett and Fennec make their way to Jabba s palace on Tatooine. There, they find Bib Fortuna in charge of the Hutt s former holdings. Fett dispatches the Twi lek and, presumably, assumes command of the criminal empire.Luke Skywalker s Arrival Forever Changes the Path of The Mandalorian, Removing Grogu(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)While we always had Luke on our list of available Jedi, we never really expected Djarin s path to cross with his; in fact, we ve always said we were more than happy to keep the Skywalkers out of The Mandalorian s quadrant of space. Nevertheless, it was thrilling to see the Jedi at the height of his powers undoing the menace of the Dark Troopers so ably realized by Reed. And since we re heaping praise on his directing chops, he also gave Luke an incredibly heroic fight scene. Then there s Luke s reveal itself. While many fans online had hoped to see Sebastian Stan take Hamill s place in this era of Star Wars, a de-aged Hamill appeared for the conversation with Djarin. Although, it is unclear if Hamill was ever on set. It is possible they used an updated version of the same techniques used in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to feature the late Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin and a de-aged Carrie Fisher — a credited body double for the Jedi indicates this the case. It is also possible Marvel s de-aging techniques were used, allowing Hamill to play the part for the key conversation. Either way, we got to see Luke as he appeared nearly 40 years ago and as a full Jedi Master. It makes us wish we could see Hamill and Luke in this period more often.Just not on The Mandalorian. It is easy to see this as the conclusion to the story creator Jon Favreau first developed before the series proved to be a massive success. While Dave Filoni s part of the galaxy offered alternative tutors like Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Ezra Bridger, and even, as we speculated, Jedi Master Yaddle, delivering Grogu to Luke brings the series back to its initial tone: a program made in the spirit of Return of the Jedi and inspired by kids playing with Star Wars action figures. If The Mandalorian had ever been positioned as a limited series like the upcoming Marvel Studios program WandaVision, this would definitely be a satisfying place to end things — even if Djarin is left alone at the end. Going back to the westerns and samurai films that inspired Star Wars to begin with, it s thematically consistent for the Mandalorian to go back to his solitary wandering. But this is no longer the Way for him. In his quest to deliver Grogu to the Jedi, he saw alternative paths and despite his best efforts to be a side character in his own story, Din Djarin will have to face the facts: he is the star with a seemingly unavoidable destiny.Always Questions Are the FutureDebbie DayDjarin s destiny lead us to a number of questions. As does that incredible tease of Boba Fett s future at the end of the episode. With the program s initial premise seemingly resolved, its third season is wide open with possibilities. Is this the end of Lone Mando and Cub? A constant criticism of the show has been its wandering nature. Inspired by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima s manga series Lone Wolf and Cub, the format allowed the show to take episode-length detours like Chapter 10 s Frog Lady charter or Chapter 6 s prison break. It meant the directors could come on to the show and essentially make large-budget Star Wars fan films while Favreau moved the overall plot along. Nonetheless, Chapter 10 was criticized as filler, and even we wondered how much longer the show could do episodes like it as its own mythology built up. The 😈😈

(Photo by Warner Bros/ Everett Collection)DCEU Ranked: DC Movies By TomatometerAfter a long-running Superman series with Christopher Reeve in the iconic tights and cape (and one more with Brandon Routh), and compelling takes on Batman on both sides of the millennium, Warner Bros. put the reset on their DC Comics movies and created the DC Extended Universe. The first in this new constellation of comic book cinema was 2013 s Man of Steel, which took audiences back through the beefy boy from Krypton s origins and his blossoming into the protector of mankind. The super-serious tone and dismissal of some of Superman s key characteristics put off some, but this new take was bold enough to keep modern cynical audiences intrigued.Inevitably, comparisons were incessant to the rival Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as director Zack Snyder doubled down on the dourness with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In this day and age, fans on the internet expect an all-access pass on the production of their favorite properties, including leaks, rumors, and sneaky on-set photos. The publicly aired dirty laundry of the troubled Suicide Squad shoot colored audience perception of the film before it even released. It also wasn t very good.Wonder Woman, with its fleet touch and storytelling pizzazz, would become the first beacon of light for the DCEU, and its first Certified Fresh hit. Justice League followed that year, cramming huge characters into a truncated runtime (not to mention tonally inconsistent reshoots by Joss Whedon, and Henry Cavill s phantom mustache), leading to rallying cries online of a fabled Snyder Cut of the movie. It d be more than a year later for the next DCEU entry: 2018 s Aquaman. Directed by James Wan, if the film wasn t exactly drowning in critical praise, it at last was enough to keep the audiences worldwide satisfied and optimistic for the future. That paid off with Shazam!, a superhero comedy in the more classic vein, one that doesn t bend over backwards to connect with the larger DC Universe. It worked there and with Birds of Prey, featuring. Wonder Woman 1984 didn t quite continue the streak, but The Suicide Squad has become among the franchise s best-reviewed. See where how they all play out as we rank all DC Extended Universe movies!
