Well, familiar to viewers anyway. From Djarin s perspective, it s armor Vanth has no right to wear as he does not follow The Way of Mandalore. After an initial disagreement, they strike a deal: Djarin will help Vanth kill a Krayt Dragon terrorizing the region and Vanth will hand over the armor.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Their path leads to a Tusken settlement, where Djarin manages to negotiate a truce between the Sand People and Mos Pelgo. Everyone will help with Krayt Dragon and the Tuskens will never raid the town again — provided the humans never break the peace, of course.This being the Star Wars galaxy, the plan does not go smoothly, but Djarin manages to kill the Krayt Dragon from the inside and all agreements are honored. Sadly, the Mandalorian is no closer to his goal, but at least he has reclaimed some missing Mando armor.In the distance, an apparently alive Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) sees Djarin riding back to Mos Eisley.Season 2 Mandalorian Premiere Resolves Some Rumors (Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)In the time since The Mandalorian concluded its first season, many rumors about casting — and classic Star Wars characters appearing in the series — captured the imagination of fans across the internet. And though one would expect most of these would go unanswered for some time, the first episode of season 2 resolved a couple almost immediately.Olyphant s name first emerged as Vanth back in May. The character is pulled from the Star Wars: Aftermath novel trilogy by Chuck Wending. As in the books, he is a human on Tatooine who acquired Boba Fett s armor to bring justice to a backwater settlement, though his telling of the story differs from the books. As a performer, Olyphant brings even more of a Western edge to the character. From Vanth s preference for red to his U.S. Marshal mustache, he feels both a part of the Star Wars universe and our own. Also, it should be said, there s something nice about seeing a man of his word in the Star Wars galaxy. Djarin tends to deal with scum and villainy, so Vanth cheerfully handing the armor over felt unusual and hopeful.Indeed, seeing Djarin broker a peace between humans and Tuskens also felt uncharacteristically hopeful for his corner of the galaxy. At least, we think he is Boba Fett. Since his father Jango (also Morrison) volunteered to be the source of the Old Republic s eventual Clone Army, it is possible this character is another clone trooper. We doubt it s Captain Rex, the beloved Star Wars: The Clone Wars character voiced by Dee Bradley Baker — he d never shave that magnificent beard off.Assuming that wanderer in the Dune Sea is Boba Fett, it leaves us with a lot of questions: how did he escape the Great Pit of Carkoon? Why did he allow Vanth to use his armor for the last few years? And, perhaps the most provocative question, will Djarin accept him as a Mandalorian?As it happens, there is some question about his status as a Mando — an inheritance from some of the earliest rumors about Boba Fett in the 1980s Star Wars novels and comics — even though his father was adopted into the tribe at an early age and went on to lead the True Mandalorian faction sometime before the Clone Wars. Also, the armor itself is not Beskar, but instead made of Durasteel. While Djarin gave no indication he recognized the armor, it is possible the legend of the Fetts passed through the culverts. Then again, it is also possible some of that history has been lost. There s also the problem of The Way. Boba, even if he is not an adherent, has taken off his helmet, and Djarin would be unlikely to give the armor back to him. We doubt this will sit well with Boba.Or, who knows, maybe narrowly avoiding 1,000 years of pain and suffering in the belly of a Sarlaac changed his view of the universe.Star Wars Deep Pulls and Cameos That Appear in The Mandalorian’s Season 2 Premiere(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)As series creator and episode director Jon Favreau is not shy about his Star Wars fandom, the episode is littered with callbacks to the first season, the Star Wars films, and various parts of the lore.Our favorite may be the unlikely return of R5-D4. At least, we re fairly sure the R5 unit Motto refers to as unreliable is the very same droid with a bad motivator from the original Star Wars film. The carbon scouring on the rear of  its dome indicates the time it fried itself in front of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). R5-D4 also made a cameo in the first season s Tatooine episode at the now droid-run Mos Eisley cantina.Motto (pictured above) is also a nice callback to the first season. She is such an unexpected, workaday part of the galaxy that her viewpoint on events will always be welcome — see how her worry about The Child feels as lived in as her deprecation of the pit droids.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)And speaking of the pit droids, we can t help but think Vanth s speeder bike contains the remains of Anakin Skywalker s (Jake Lloyd) podracer. It looks like one of the engines, anyway, and considering how quickly things are forgotten on Tatooine, it is possible the racer was sold for parts only a handful of years after Qui-Gon Jinn sold it to fund repairs on Queen Amidala s (Natalie Portman) ship — events all seen in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.The Krayt Dragon is also a interesting pull. Its scream was imitated by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) in Star Wars to scare off the Tuskens, and one of its skeletons can be seen just after 3PO and R2-D2 arrive on the planet. Both moments are honored in the episode, but beyond that is the exploration of the Tuskens relationship to the creature. They fear the beast, but are also happy to harvest its innards should the opportunity arise. Also, anyone who played Knights of the Old Republic will get a shiver of déjà vu during the dragon hunt and the subsequent discovery of the pearl inside the carcass.The Mandalorian Season 2 Premiere Leaves Some Questions Unanswered (Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Although the episode was quite satisfying, it left us with a few unanswered questions. It wouldn t be Star Wars without some dangling plot points, after all.Is Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) alive? She was seemingly rescued at the last moment by someone wearing spurs in last season s Tatooine episode. The common belief was either Boba Fett or Vanth found her. But she was completely absent from the Mos Pelgo adventure. It is still possible she died and the spur-wearing wander just looted her corpse, but it is also equally possible she was just off camera while Boba watched Djarin speed away.How Much Time Has Passed Since Last Season? Considering Djarin bought a new hoverpram for The Child and he seems comfortable with his jetpack, some time has passed since his encounter with Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), but it would be nice to know if it s been weeks or months since that time. And, unlike most infants, The Child will not appreciably grow for awhile, so he cannot be our calendar.Where Are The Imps? Although Djarin and his friends routed the Imps on Navarro, its safe to assume Gideon has some sort of backup. Are they tracking the Razor Crest? Although the character of M.O.D.O.K. isn t as well-known as other superheroes and supervillains, he s instantly recognizable for comic fans, said Blum. It s a fan-favorite character, like Howard the Duck or other lesser-known heroes.As a company, Marvel loves how weird and kind of out there their characters get, said Oswalt. They do have this amazing roster of characters, so the fact that we re starting on the outer limits and then building beyond that, I think they re really excited. That said, there will be plenty of cameos from the big heroes audiences know and love (despite the fact that this series is decidedly not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which now includes TV with all of the company s Disney+ shows).On occasion, said Blum, Marvel let us play with the big toys. We remain unbelievably relevant, and we kind of wish we weren’t, executive producer Warren Littlefield said on a panel for the show s upcoming fourth season.Added creator Bruce Miller, Television and drama are safe places to see your worst fears acted out and kind of experience them at a remove. When you come up with something horrible in your head and put it on television, and then hear something like it happening in the real world, it s just sickening. But the terror of life in Gilead, the theocratic dictatorship that has taken over much of the U.S. in The Handmaid s Tale s fictional world, isn t all parallels to the current political reality. The fourth season, which premieres April 28 — nearly two years after the third season ended, thanks to its pandemic production delay — will see what happened in the aftermath of heroine June (Elisabeth Moss) and her allies sending dozens of children to safety in Canada. She can go outside the box, said Katey Sagal, who plays the titular character, a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree who will fight for a cause she believes in at almost any cost. She gathers knowledge from everywhere, she just takes it all, and then her primary purpose is to fight for the right thing. But that s just how Brockovich is in real life, she admitted. I’ve been told to watch my mouth plenty of times, but it’s passion,” Brockovich said on the series TCA panel. Why do you have to respond a certain way when some of the things you’re dealing with are full of passion and angst and fear and lies and deception? A week before The Tick’s second season premiere, stars Peter Serafinowicz and Griffin Newman debuted the first episode of the new season at the show s WonderCon panel. Following a Los Angeles press tour to promote the series, the duo sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for a relaxing lunch to discuss the upcoming batch of new episodes, including how titular superhero The Tick and sidekick Arthur Everest will evolve over the course of the season, the show s satirical nature, and the episode devoted to fan-favorite Dangerboat.New Heroes, New ProblemsWith the defeat of The Terror (Jackie Earle Haley) at the end of the first season, The City faces a new day with superheroes returning in droves, supervillains appearing to fight them, and AEGIS — the government agency tasked with monitoring the superhero community — reopening its doors in town. But as Newman noted, AEGIS — and its plan to introduce a new version of the Flag Five superhero team — is an extension of something creator Ben Edlund has been playing with since The Tick’s comic book and animated incarnations.“It s the idea of it being an industry. So often superheroes are taken as just like this magical force in the world. You know, these brave people, Newman explained. But the Tick and Arthur discover there s this sort of pettiness of the career jockeying as other heroes try out for the team. You understand how many different superheroes there are doing it for different reasons and the different levels of a career, he said. The concept is just funny to me. It’s like when you’re a kid and watch movies and think its so glamorous and magical. And then you get near the industry, you start working in it and around it and you re just like, these are all people just doing their jobs and everyone comes in every morning with bad breath.”The Tick s lasting presence in pop culture is due in large part to the audience being able to relate to the titular hero s experience, Newman said, even in a thing that we don t usually think of as a career. Joked Serafinowicz, “Like acting.”In all seriousness, though, the heroes gather in the office kitchen every morning and drink free AEGIS coffee just like everyone else. It s a central place where the characters can hang out. While fan favorite characters like Batmanuel and Captain Liberty won t pop up around the water cooler just yet, one classic Tick villain will appear in season 2, Newman confirmed. And AEGIS itself will also act as an antagonistic force of sorts as the Tick and Arthur learn how to deal with “the bureaucracy of being a superhero.”“You have to file an incident report after you punched a bad guy,” Newman said. But that process will also opens up a grey area unfamiliar to the Tick, whose moral compass has always been binary. There s a lot of [Tick and Arthur] trying to figure out who the good people are and who the bad people are, because sometimes good people do bad things for the right reasons. And, sometimes bad people do good things for the wrong reasons. Pitching the Right Sort of Satire(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)Like the fans who attended The Tick s WonderCon panel, Serafinowicz watched the season 2 premiere for the first time at the convention. Not only was he pleased to watch the episode with a group of eager fans, he was also excited to see the completed special effects and music and all the bells and whistles that Newman said makes a big difference on a show like this. “We have these big set pieces and they ve got to look good because they ve got to compete with the latest Marvel movie,” Serafinowicz said. Or, at the very least, the show has to “attempt those standards” on a TV budget.At the same time, The Tick really isn’t about the action set pieces.“I think Ben’s whole notion, which I agree with, is the best way to satirize something is to come at it from a place of love and respect, Newman said. You can t really properly satirize something unless you personally understand why it works in the first place. And secondly, you have to walk the walk. So if we re going to make the show that s satirizing other superhero shows, you sort of have to play at the same altitude that they re like.”Creating A More Emotionally Rich Tick(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)If one thing sets the new version of the show apart, it is a greater emphasis on the characters’ interior emotions.“That’s the key to it all. That’s why I wanted to do it,” said Serafinowicz. “The sole focus of what we do as performers is the emotions.”While the animated series and the 2001 live action show on Fox favored a broader tone, the more serialized nature of the Amazon series offers Edlund an opportunity to do something new with The Tick and Arthur. As Newman put it, “He took the characters as they already existed and then he sort of added an attic and a basement. There s framing around them. … It s so clear what this character is going through emotionally that all I have to worry about is doing it justice.”At the same time, Serafinowicz believes the show has a key cultural touchstone to draw from that is not necessarily known for its emotional grounding: “The tone of the show is similar to the 1960s Batman,” he said.Added Newman, It s our North Star. Those characters enjoyed fighting crime. It wasn’t a burden and it wasn’t about vengeance.”In fact, the characters actually want to be there, which isn t something that can be said about all modern superheroes.“I read so many pilots scripts where the characters are defined by what they hate or what they don’t want to do. It s so much conflict-forward in terms of the thing [the character] has to overcome, Newman explained. You realize how rare it is to see a show that s about two people doing something that is inherently decent and it s about their empathy for other human beings — wanting to take care of them and look after them — but also that they enjoy doing it.”Of course, in the first season, Arthur took some time to realize he enjoyed being a hero, but Newman said that was an intentional part of the storytelling to get the character in an emotional space for the decision he makes in the first episode of season 2, which echoes Arthur’s introduction in the previous Tick live action show and animated series as a person who actively chooses to place himself in the middle of a superhero battle.“[We] make him a little more well-rounded emotionally,” Newman explained. “So to get to that point, you understand why he makes the decision that he does. Arthur’s not cocky, but he’s decided he knows why he s doing it. He s going to keep subjecting himself to something that he is terrified of and doesn t think he can necessarily pull off because he feels, fundamentally, it s the right thing to do.”And what does this new phase in Arthur s life mean for the Tick?“What Tick wants more than anything is for Arthur to be his friend, to be with him all the time, so he couldn t be happier, Serafinowicz said. “Outside of everything else they have to contend with, I think in their relationship it s quite simple. The Tick is like a happily married man.”The domesticity that was baked into the previews versions returns in season 2, as it is important to Edlund to portray intimacy between two men without [it] being couched in a bunch of jokes, Newman said.  It’s about these two men [who] love each other and need each other to function and it s not just double entendres.”Added Serafinowicz, “It s hard to pick a similar sort of relationship [in media] where it s this very strong kind of buddy thing: two guys who just really, at the end of the day, think each other is pretty great. The two characters may be very different, but they work hard to find the common ground between them.Giving The Tick And Arthur Their VoicesIf there is one continuity between the three shows, it is the general sound of Tick’s voice. Serafinowicz said he avoided listening to the performances of Patrick Warburton (from the 2001 show) and Townsend Coleman (from the animated show) to give his Tick voice a chance to flourish into its own, but he did draw inspiration from Adam West s Batman and a few other television sources.“I spoke with Ben about the voice; about where I was coming from, which was a 1960s TV announcer voice, a bit like those Roger Ramjet cartoons,” Serafinowicz said. Like West s Batman, the “enthusiastic pure happiness” to mete out justice is also key to giving the Tick’s voice its specific quality.When he asked what sort of work Newman does to transform his voice into Arthur’s, the actor joked, “years of vocal training.” For the record, he then demonstrated a very close approximation of Tick animated series voice actor Rob Paulsen’s annoyed “Tiiiiick!” outburst.The World Is Going To Become More Absurd(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)While the pilot saw Arthur questioning his sanity only for the Tick to bring the whole world into a hyper-reality, Newman said the goal is to keep escalating the level of absurdity.“Everything starts to transform around The Tick. The colors get brighter and the performances get heightened, and the comedy gets more and more absurd,” he said, adding that if season 1 was about grounding the characters in a more emotionally rich universe, it becomes the foundation for things like talking dogs and the lobster creature seen in the season 2 trailer. “You don t feel an ironic detachment from the thing. You re laughing with the characters instead of at them.”Elements of this change began as soon as production resumed after the pilot, with the Tick’s costume suddenly changing. That evolution continues with the characters getting closer to their more iconic silhouettes and Arthur remaining in costume throughout most of the second season.“Hopefully it gets to the point where it just feels like what you remember the cartoon feeling like, but with all the work we put in establishing the emotional connection underneath that,” Newman added.Dangerboat Is Getting an Episode(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)The scene-stealing Dangerboat will be the star of his own episode this year, but in keeping with the Tick brand of absurdity, Newman said it is a “a bottle episode that takes place inside of a character. The bottle is Dangerboat and the whole episode is us reckoning with him. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried.Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. The comic book Y: The Last Man, by writer Brian K. Vaughn and artist Pia Guerra, opens with an idea that is simply expressed but complex in its meaning: What if all but one man suddenly died? Debuting in 2002, the series explored that idea for 60 issues, reaching an interesting conclusion. But even before the final issue was published, the comic book was on its way to becoming a film. Nearly 15 years later, that film has not materialized; instead, FX on Hulu’s adaptation, also called Y: The Last Man, debuts today.In the decades since the comic’s debut, its basic question has become an even more complex notion. As showrunner Eliza Clark told Rotten Tomatoes, it is as much about “identity and the way that oppressive systems conspire to inform our identities” as it is about observing the last “man” on Earth as he searches for a way to continue the species.Nevertheless, we also spoke to star Ben Schnetzer about playing Yorick, the titular man in a world where maleness is determined by more than the Y chromosome. We also chatted with Olivia Thirlby, who plays Yorick’s sister, Hero, about her journey, the tough bonds of family and, along with Clark and Schnetzer, the scope of Y as a television show.A World Of Browns(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)As much as the series is about its provocative premise, it is also about the Brown family: mother Jennifer (Diane Lane) and her children, Yorick and Hero. Jennifer is a tough and seasoned US Senator, and Yorick and Hero enjoy a certain amount of luxury as children of privilege. Before “The Event,” which utterly changes the world, they both live in New York. Hero gets by as a paramedic while Yorick teaches magic and prepares an escapology routine he expects to be his ticket to fame. And, as viewers will discover, they are typical siblings. “They are angry at each other a lot of the time,” Thirlby said. “But they re sort of bonded in this shared experience of being Jennifer s kids. I don t think there s a very big margin of error when you re Jennifer s kids, so they always had to look out for each other in a very specific kind of way.”Then, The Event happens and all mammals carrying the Y chromosome – except Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand – drop dead. Jennifer ends up in charge of preserving the US government while Yorick and Hero (who is unaware her brother is alive) set off on very different journeys.(Photo by Brendon Meadows/FX)According to Clark, the three viewpoints were inspired by the early issues of Y, which also split its time between several characters in different parts of the world. But by centering on Jennifer, Yorick, and Hero as the major viewpoint characters in the television show, an opportunity to “see inside these worlds a little bit more deeply” presented itself.“It s a large ensemble,” added Thirlby. “It s about many stories unfolding simultaneously. It s about people who don t know that they re in a TV show, so their understanding of their own world is pretty complete.” In her view, part of the fun for the audience is keeping in mind the characters’ certainty in the face of severe knowledge gaps; it leads to a lot of tension for the characters and the viewer.The Escape Artist(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)Though it is an ensemble which includes Amber Tamblyn as a Washington insider (despite the character’s own protests to the contrary), Ashley Romans as a secret agent tasked with keeping Yorick alive, and Elliot Fletcher as Hero’s traveling companion Sam – the show is called Y: The Last Man. Therefore, Schnetzer’s character is primary thanks to his Y chromosome. That said, fans of the book may be surprised by the Yorick they meet in the first episode.“Yorick s kind of guileless, disarming humor reads in a particular way, beautifully, in the panels of a graphic novel,” the actor said. “But we wanted to make him a little more vulnerable, and a little more human, in a way that would read in the three dimensions of a series on screen.” The initial innocence (and obliviousness) of the comic book character gave way to something a little more, well, privileged. “I wasn t thinking consciously about it when we were filming it, but definitely, there s a part of him that is spoiled, and it is very privileged,” Schnetzer said. “[It’s] the idea of Yorick being a really unlikely candidate for the role he finds himself in… There s no nobility going into it. We wanted to give him a runway to discover that through the trials of the show that lay before him.”Yorick’s introduction may present him as somewhat unpleasant, but Clark said the hope is that viewers will still “like him even though you re like, ‘Ugh, this f ing idiot.’”(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)“I really love Yorick and want him to succeed,” she continued. “And I think the story needs you to like him in spite of the ways he really has so much growing up to do.”Part of his journey to maturity will be his travels with Agent 355 (Romans), an element fans will recognize from the book, though Schnetzer felt it was important to “un-know” that aspect of the story so he and Romans could build the rapport between their characters in an organic way. “It was really important to understand who these people were before they knew each other,” he said of the preparation. It proved to be a tightrope, as some takes would end with him wondering if the characters were too familiar for an escape artist and secret agent at the start of their journey across the ruins of America. Nevertheless, he felt the early episodes provide “a bit of an origin story for this relationship,” which will lead to a “Butch and Sundance” dynamic.They will also meet a third traveling companion, Dr. Mann (Diana Bang), along the way. “Her eccentricity and her sense of purpose bonds 355 and Yorick,” he teased, also suggesting that Dr. Mann may create some doubt about 355 in Yorick’s mind. “It just adds a whole different flavor to things,” he said.The Wanderer(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)Perhaps for more than any of the other Browns, Hero’s story is one of survival – even before The Event. “[It’s about] her capacity to navigate her own traumas,” Thirlby said. “But also asking the question, does she have the strength and the capacity to have the will to survive, given some of what she s experienced and the way that she s coped with that?” That question will lead her on a very different path than Yorick’s, much of which we can only tease, as it greatly redefines the state she is in when comic book readers first met her. One thing we will mention: she has little interest in meeting up with Jennifer. “Her relationship with her mother is a little bit too fraught,” she said. And whether or not that relationship is examined more closely later in the series, the Hero who prepares to leave Manhattan after The Event “does not want to continue her role as a daughter in this world.”Instead, she strikes out into the wide world with Sam, a trans man who is an entirely new character for the series. “They love to be their own little unit and look down on everyone else around them,” she said of their dynamic before The Event. “I think [when] they met, it started instantly with their shared eyeroll about the larger social circle that they happen to be sitting in.”(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)Of course, the world after The Event will test their bond and prove it is more complex than a shared sense of superiority. “Their friendship is really unusual,” she said. “It s many things rolled into one. It s a best friendship. There s a deep intimacy that they share. There is the desire to be drawn together, romantically and sexually, that I think they both resist a lot of the time for totally different reasons.” To Thirlby, the malleable nature of their relationship is one of the show’s strengths as it examines “the way that people connect outside of the normal confines of what we re used to seeing.”“There s a lot of love there, [but] I think there s a lot of toxicity too,” Clark added. “They enable one another.” One thing that is solely Hero’s motivation is a sense of shame for something she does just prior to The Event. “She s looking for consequences… and they get into dangerous situations because of Hero s shame,” she explained. It may be different from the comic book, but Clark felt it was important to strongly define who Hero was before The Event in light of “who she becomes.” Readers of the book will have a pretty good idea what that means, even if the show approaches the concept from a different angle.The Commander(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)Meanwhile, Jennifer remains in the Pentagon trying to maintain a semblance of a working government. It represents some of the program’s most harrowing post-apocalyptic moments because they are so close to reality. “Our [real] power grid is poorly constructed and needs constant maintenance. It s a patchwork of random systems,” Clark said. “Same is true for our infrastructure. It is crumbling now.” Then add the historic gender inequalities in the workplace and Jennifer faces a situation where she has, potentially, a single woman running a hydroelectric dam. “There might be a woman who works at the dam – she might be one of two – can she handle it entirely by herself? Maybe her talents might be better used at a different kind of emergency,” Clark said of the problems just with maintaining electricity after The Event. At some point, Jennifer, who is aided by a dynamic and diverse staff also dealing with the personal aftermath of The Event, is pretty much just “putting her finger in the dam.”“The extent of the problems just gets bigger and bigger,” she continued. Nevertheless, part of expanding Jennifer’s role in the story verses the comic book was to illustrate a situation in which “people who really are super capable” try to patch the holes left in society after The Event.(Photo by Rafy Winterfeld/FX)Complicating the patch job is a continuing political opposition represented by Tamblyn’s Kimberly. “She is a person who has aligned herself with the patriarchy and gotten basically all of her power and her identity from her proximity to men,” Clark explained. In the wake of The Event, and Jennifer assuming power, Kimberly is left grasping for the old ways and reinforcing the binary roles she understood. The character could easily lend itself to caricature, but viewers will find Kimberly is a surprisingly complex (and compassionate) foe. “[It’s] Amber Tamblyn like you ve never seen her before,” Clark said.And this is all before Jennifer can contemplate sending a rescue unit for Hero or even dare to hope Yorick is alive. But once it becomes possible that her son is the last Y chromosome-carrying human on Earth, she will be forced to view it through the lens of her political liabilities. “She s had to compromise from the beginning, and it puts her in a gray moral area that is, I think, super interesting to watch, Clark said of the problems any reunion might cause.The World Of YRyan FujitaniOf course, the Brown Family represent just a part of Y: The Last Man’s world. There is Jennifer’s staff some of whom absolutely steal scenes the unique challenges Sam faces on the road with Hero, and one re-imagining of a comic book character we can only reference in the broadest terms. King has said the novel — which follows the widow of a famous novelist coping with his death, and which King wrote following his own serious car accident — is his favorite, so it makes sense that the author himself would shepherd it to the small screen.Julianne Moore stars as the titular character and Clive Owen as her late husband, Scott Landon, and the story goes back and forth in time from the past to Lisey s present, with a visit to dream world Boo ya Moon in between as an obsessive fan (Dane DeHaan) tries to gain access to Scott s unfinished manuscripts.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to Abrams about Lisey s Story, his past (and hopefully future) collaborations with King, and what else he and his team at production company Bad Robot have in the works.(Photo by Apple TV+)Jean Bentley for Rotten Tomatoes: You ve worked with Stephen King before, but he has said many times that Lisey s Story is very personal to him. Did you have a different experience this time around because of that?Abrams: Well, it was different in that he wrote all the episodes. I think that obviously speaks to how much it means to him. I had read over the years that this was his favorite book he d written, and it was when he said he wanted to write every episode that I realized he meant it. What was wonderful about it was that he really did adapt it, which is to say it s a very internal book. Instead of doing a kind of transcription to another form, he really did something that I think is far harder to do than it might seem: look at the work and figure out how to take what s so internal and translate it to a different medium. Pablo Larraín, our director, was super helpful with that as well. [Stephen was] all in on this one. What was wonderful was that he loved what not just Pablo but the cast was doing, and became our loudest cheerleader as the production was underway.Rotten Tomatoes: What about from your perspective? Was anything particularly different with this collaboration? How hands-on were you in this show?Abrams: Sometimes being a producer is putting out fires everywhere you look. In some cases, it s figuring out how to identify what the story really is or might be, or how to fix things that are evidently broken. In the case of this, it was really to help put together the team and be there to talk to any of the players at any time when necessary, but really to get out of the way and let them do their job. Stephen King is such a master of the form. Being the recipient of these drafts of the episodes that he was writing was really just a gift to all of us and Pablo. Again, there were always creative conversations about how to best do it. Lisey s Story is a very interpretable book, which is to say the idea of Boo ya Moon, this other world, this other existence, everyone who reads the book is going to have a slightly different vision. Pablo is responsible for making that a very specific and very photo-real thing. How do you do that best? What does that look like? How does it work?I was always nervous, of course, that somehow Stephen would feel like that character, that relationship, that world, that look didn t quite [translate]. He s been doing this a while, [so] he understands that a director s job is to interpret for all of us what it is he or she sees. What was great was that Stephen was as supportive as he was along the way.(Photo by Apple TV+)Rotten Tomatoes: From a wider perspective, where do you think Lisey s Story fits in with what you are doing at Bad Robot and the kinds of projects you re producing there?Abrams: We are producing all sorts of things and just recently getting into animation. We re doing some stories that are based on books — in some cases comic books, in some cases original ideas, which are some of my favorite things that we re working on. A lot of the strategy or planning of what one might think your job is or your company is going to be, frankly, I m doubtful that those strategic plans always make sense and work. The only litmus test I have for a project that we work on is does it have an ooh factor. Am I leaning in to that project? It could be a comedy, it could be a horror film, it could be science-fiction, it could be a straight drama, it could be a love story, it could be live-action or animated, TV or film. It could be a book, it could be a stage production. If there s something that makes me feel like I want to see that, I want to read that, I want to listen to that, that, to me, is the only litmus test. I m just a bit dubious about long-term plans that go beyond truly making the best decision that you can moment to moment, and signing on to work with people that inspire you. Certainly, in the case of Lisey s Story, that was true.Rotten Tomatoes: You ve named a lot of different genres, not just the ones you re best known for. But people don t only watch one genre, so it feels like you re running the whole gamut of what anyone would be interested in.Abrams: I know that it might seem like Bad Robot is, Oh, it s that place where they do the sci-fi movies. We re about to start shooting a movie with Allison Janney and Jurnee Smollett that is a great survival drama with these two women at the center. There s nothing science-fiction or otherworldly about it. It s a compelling story. I just feel like whenever we find something that we really can sink our teeth into, those are the kinds of stories that we would like to tell. All of us, I think, are open to any genre if the story is told well.Rotten Tomatoes: Like your other Apple TV+ show, Little Voice. It s just a nice drama.Abrams: It was a very sweet series. It reminded me a lot of back in the day when we were doing the show Felicity — it was just the idea of young people who were opening their hearts to each other and struggling with what it is to be alive in the world. There isn t a genre that I feel doesn t potentially fall into the category of something we would love to do.Rotten Tomatoes: Exactly, and then you move on to a show with Julianne Moore and Clive Owen traversing different worlds.Abrams: Yeah, totally. Again, I can t explain it other than to say I don t think any of us want to eat one meal every day for the rest of our lives.(Photo by Apple TV+)Rotten Tomatoes: Lisey s Story tackles the themes of toxic masculinity and entitlement and fandom in a really interesting way that I have not necessarily seen you tackle in your other work, and it s probably something that both you and Stephen King have experience with.Abrams: I think one of the reasons that this was so important to Stephen King is that it spoke to his real life. Not just his work, but his marriage. Not just his work that he does, but the result of the work that he does. I think anyone who is in the public eye, anyone who is putting out work that touches people in any way runs the risk of having the kinds of fans that you find, certainly, in this story. I think that that was one of the things that he was really wrestling with. If he were to be gone and Tabitha, his wife, were to be there, what would that be like if some of the fans [showed up] that he knows have acted in a certain way? It s a scary and wildly relatable thing to anyone who s in that and many other professions.The story is Lisey s, and this is ultimately a story of hope and perseverance, but also deep suffering. What that character goes through is so horrific, not only in the backstory and understanding what she s been through, but what she goes through in real time and having to basically bear the burden of what it is that her husband has left for her. I think that it is a frighteningly realistic aspect to this really unique combination of genres, but it s something that Stephen obviously had a lot of feelings about. I completely understand where he was coming from with it because it s clearly something that is probably on the mind of anyone who s in the public eye.Rotten Tomatoes: It feels like a lot of people in the past year have taken a step back and started to reflect on their lives and their life s work. It feels timely in that sense, too.Abrams: I know exactly what you mean. The truth is that for all of us this year has been a year of loss, a year of struggle, a year of introspection and reconsideration, and in many cases, a year of gratitude and re-prioritizing things. I feel like part of what the story is about, which I think is very much in line with what you re saying, is that when your life is going on, there is a sense of an autopilot mode. When things get interrupted, you cannot help but stop and reconsider. I think that s what, certainly, Lisey goes through about her life, her marriage, and then having to question, how do you handle this? How do you overcome this? Who are you going to be moving forward? I think, to some degree, we re all going through that.(Photo by Apple TV+)Rotten Tomatoes: Were there any really difficult aspects of this show from conception to finished product? You had to stop production in the middle of everything, but what else was just a real struggle?Abrams: There were things like how do you bring to the screen something that is so fanciful and as fantastical as Boo ya Moon? Clearly, that was Pablo Larraín, our amazing director s vision and work, very much alongside Stephen King. Weirdly, when I started to see what he was doing with Boo ya Moon, I felt like, Oh. Wow. That was what I saw in my head, even though everyone will have their own version. I think the hardest thing was what you mentioned, the fact that well into production we had to shut down as the world did. We were one of the first productions to get back up and running again, doing so both here and, unexpectedly but we had to, overseas in Germany. I m incredibly grateful to the production people at Bad Robot and Warners and the entire cast and crew who managed to complete this thing. At the end of the day, it s seamless, but I know what had to happen for this thing to be finished. It was certainly challenging and a lot. I m grateful to all of them for that.Rotten Tomatoes: In that same vein, is there something about this project in particular that you re really proud of?Abrams: Well, obviously, any time we get to work with Stephen King is a point of pride. I m incredibly honored to have gotten to be associated with him on this. The cast is remarkable. Julianne Moore, I can t say enough about her. What she has to do in this project is enormous. She s so good and she s so lovely as a human. She makes it seem weirdly inevitable and effortless, none of which it is. I think to the entire cast and crew, I m just deeply moved by what they were able to do.For me, one of the unsung heroes — but maybe he will be sung — is Dane DeHaan, who brings this bad guy to life in a way that is so weirdly dimensional, and real, and funny, and horrifying, and awful. He ends up being one of the villains for the ages. I m enormously indebted to him. But like I said, Pablo and Stephen, to me, are the two people who came together to be remarkably more than the sum of their parts. Notable films: Heavenly Creatures | The Frighteners | ContactDigital effects powerhouse Weta Digital is responsible for some of your favorite movie characters and worlds from the last 25 years. Trust us: Gollum, Caesar, Middle-earth, Pandora. Chances are if it blew your mind, it started at somewhere inside one of the thousands of computers at in Weta s Wellington, New Zealand headquarters. It s a mammoth operation, with the Weta Digital team currently working on post-production for the Avatar sequels, Jungle Cruise, and the final season of Game of Thrones, all as Universal releases Mortal Engines – a showcase for the company s newest and most innovative work – in theaters this December. And yet it all began very humbly in 1993 with Peter Jackson s Certified Fresh second film, Heavenly Creatures, for which the director wanted to tinker with digital effects almost for the sake of it. He founded the company with Richard Taylor and Jamie Serkik, got to work, and would eventually change moviemaking as we knew it.Here, Jackson – who co-wrote the screenplay for Mortal Engines with Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh and is a producer on the film – walks us through the history of the company, from the moviegoing experience that turned him onto digital effects through to writing new programs for The Lord of the Rings and finally to the roaming predator cities that roam the Earth in Mortal Engines. In the early days, he admits, it was all about gnarly. What follows is a history of Weta Digital, drawn from an extended sit-down interview with Peter Jackson and Mortal Engines director Christian Rivers.SKIP TO: WETA MEETS TOLKIEN | MORTAL ENGINES“I really thought I was seeing a living, breathing, T-Rex.”  The one event that happened is… Jurassic Park happened. We were getting into Heavenly Creatures and I went to see Jurassic Park, and, you know, the Tyrannosaurus Rex – I really thought I was seeing a living, breathing T-Rex. I just thought, my god. Whatever the future of visual effects is, it s now gotta be computers. Jurassic Park (Photo by © Universal / courtesy Everett Collection)“We started on Heavenly Creatures with one computer – I think we still have it, it s a doorstop now.” We started on Heavenly Creatures with one computer, one single box. I think we actually still have it, and I think it s a doorstop now – we ve sort of got our memorial doorstop. But that was so bloody expensive and it took us forever to save up and buy. We ve got probably six or seven thousand computers [now]. Right up to Heavenly Creatures I d done some horror movies and things, and we d always done our own effects, which was all prosthetics and props and zombie stuff and all that. We had done it ourselves – I love effects, I d never wanna give them to somebody else to do, because they re part of the fun of filmmaking. “We did the effects really just for the sake of doing some CGI, so we d actually just start to figure it out.” To tell you the truth, we didn t really need any CGI in [Heavenly Creatures]. But, we used the film as an excuse to buy one computer, just to put our toe in the water. And we had a guy, one guy, who could figure out how to work it, and we got a couple of bits of software, and we did the effects in Heavenly Creatures really just for the sake of doing some CGI effects so we d actually just start to figure it out. And then on The Frighteners, which was the next movie we [did], we went from one computer to 30 computers. It was a pretty big jump. Heavenly Creatures “Cloth was one of the things that people hadn t managed to figure out yet – when you look at it today, it s pretty gnarly.” The big nightmare for us on that movie was to do CGI cloth, because one of our characters was a grim reaper-type guy with a flying black robes. So we had to do CGI cloth flowing. Cloth was one of the things that people hadn t managed to figure out yet, so, we had code-writers writing our code to do cloth for us. When you look at it today it s pretty crude, pretty gnarly – it looks like stretchy pasty vinyl, it doesn t really look like cloth. [You can] buy a piece of software for a [cheap] that can do far better cloth now. “It usually involves water or fire.”  First of all, [you’re] driven by what you have to do, you know? What is the result? We use a lot of readily available, not particularly expensive off-the-shelf programs [to create effects], but occasionally you do get something you would like to do – and it usually involves water, you know, splashing the water, or river water, or fire. That sort of thing that off-the-shelf software can t quite do. So at that point, you have to write your own software. Robert Zemeckis, Michael J. Fox, Peter Jackson, producer Steve Starkey for The Frighteners (Photo by © Universal Pictures)“The guys wanna do everything better than they did the last time It sort of drives me crazy.” Over the years, we’ve written about a hundred pieces of code for a wide variety of different things, and it drives me a little bit crazy because we keep writing code for the same things every time. Like, we do Avatar a few years ago, and we wrote software to create grass, and trees, leaves, that can blow with the wind, that sort of stuff. And then I come along with The Hobbit, and I want some grass or some shrubs or some trees, so I [ask], Why can t we use the stuff that we wrote [already]? I mean it was fine for the [prior] film, but we wanted to be better. I mean there was some kind of code, unspoken code – and it s not anything to do with the ownership of the software, because it belongs to us – but the guys themselves, wanna do everything better than they did the last time. So they don t want the Avatar grass, or the leaves; they want to do grass and leaves better than last time. They set about writing a whole new grass software, whole new leaf software, and it happens over and over again, all the time. It sort of drives me crazy. SKIP TO: WETA MEETS TOLKIEN | MORTAL ENGINES
