Shapiro plays Niles Caulder’s (Timothy Dalton) peculiar young daughter Dorothy Spinner. While it s one thing to have an 11-year-old child running around Doom Manor, it s a whole other issue to learn that this kid has a set of powerful imaginary friends who can cause some serious damage — one fiery bloke, in particular, can bring on the apocalypse at a moment s notice. And with each episode this season, world-ending monster The Candlemaker has continued to grow stronger.Spoiler alert: This article discusses plot details of Doom Patrol episode 208, Dad Patrol. Stop here if you haven t watched the episode. Niles has tried his best to keep his daughter sheltered from the world, while also sheltering all of humanity from her supremely dangerous potential. Now Dorothy is growing up, which causes Niles a lot of anxiety — a universal experience all parents can relate to really. As the episodes have progressed, we ve watched Dorothy piece together the truth about her experience living under Danny the Street and her father s true motivations in keeping her there. But as much as Niles has worked to keep Dorothy a child forever, the girl s desire to be taken seriously (along with that pesky getting older thing) has made her father s fear an inevitable reality.(Photo by DC Universe)The majority of the story that plays out in Thursday s episode, Dad Patrol, is setting up this tragedy to take place. Niles wants to put Dorothy back into captivity. And Dorothy, who experienced getting her first period earlier in the episode, decides it s best not to tell her father. She s growing up. And while a trip to the carnival gives them a fun daddy-daughter day away from it all, no one can keep Dorothy from maturing. Not even Niles.Rotten Tomatoes had the opportunity to speak with Shapiro about Thursday s Dad Patrol episode. During our chat, the 20-year-old actress discussed the challenges she faced while wearing prosthetics, the fractured trust issues Dorothy has with her father, and the impact The Candlemaker s arrival will potentially have on the series moving forward. Considering the fact that Doom Patrol is the actress s first-ever television role, her perspective of Dorothy s growth — and the fear that comes with it — adds a welcome sense of clarity and humor to the girl s challenging journey.(Photo by Photography: Emily Assiran; Hair/Makeup: Chelsea Gehr)Aaron Pruner for Rotten Tomatoes: I want to start this off by talking about the possible challenges you faced as a 20-year-old woman playing an 11-year-old girl.Abigail Shapiro: It wasn t actually too much of a challenge because I m very small. And I look pretty young for my age. I ve been playing kids for a very long time. So it wasn t something that was very new to me. Also, when you re that young you don t think of yourself as a little kid, you kind of think you re already grown up. So I tried to put myself in that mindset and let my inner freedom child run free.Dorothy s a little girl but she s also roughly 175-years-old. So there is an element of maturity, but also a yearning to hold on to her childlike wonder. Was that a fun dynamic to play?Shapiro: Yeah, definitely. She s been kept away for so long, so she really hasn t seen much of the world. Her growing up has kind of been put on hold for all of these decades if you think about it. And I don t think she actually started to grow up until the minute they saved her out of the dark. That s the first time in years she actually got a glimpse of the world and something other than Danny and her dad, occasionally.(Photo by Mark Hill/ 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.)Since you re covered in makeup, did you find your facial expressions stifled? Because the emotionality of the character really comes across a lot more through the use of her voice. Did you find that to be the case when working to bring Dorothy to life?Shapiro: Yeah, I focused on it a bit more actually. My sister, I was rehearsing with her, my younger sister Milly Shapiro (Hereditary). She helps me with a lot of my work. I was rehearsing with her and she was like, You really need to focus on your voice acting because your face movements are going to be compromised. And I was like, you re right. So it s because of her I really started to focus on that a little bit more. Was it a lengthy application process?Shapiro: The process took about three hours in the beginning, and then we got it down to two hours. And I wear a prosthetic chin, nose, and lips, a little bit of the cheeks, the forehead, then the fake hair and I wear the fake teeth. And actually, the fake teeth were the most difficult part because I had to do the British accent and my diction was already compromised from wearing these giant fake teeth. So that was the biggest challenge with the process.(Photo by DC Universe)You mentioned Danny the Street, earlier. In episode 4, Sex Patrol, Dorothy learns he wasn t just her friend but also the prison that held her captive all these years. Was that the moment she started really listening to this darker voice, The Candlemaker, in her head?Shapiro: I think so, definitely. She s been trapped away for so long and she lived underneath Danny for decades and she s only heard the parties going on. She s never been able to actually go. So actually going to a Danny party and seeing everything makes her realize that she s been trapped for so long and hasn t had the chance to experience the world and everyone who she thought cared about her were not the people who she thought they were. She basically realizes her father doesn t want her to grow up; no one really does. And she has been unable to experience anything. It s the moment she realizes that the world isn t all rainbows and daisies. You have to experience the darker sides of the world, too, in order to grow up. And she s never experienced the darker sides of the world. I think she starts to listen to The Candlemaker because she no longer really trusts everyone around her, completely, as a child would.Still, Danny the Street represented friendship and safety to Dorothy. What do you think The Candlemaker represents to her?Shapiro: The Candlemaker, I think, represents the parts of herself that she doesn t like. Her inner demons. And throughout the season, especially in episode 8, she learns that she needs to actually face her inner demons in order to embrace them and ultimately grow up, because it isn t until your face these inner demons and the parts of yourself that you don t like that you can really take control of your life and build your own path and grow up.(Photo by DC Universe)There s a pivotal scene in this week s episode where Dorothy is in a gas station and experiences her first real puberty moment. It feels like this is a shocking instance where she is being forced to confront herself and her body for the first time, and acknowledge she can t stop herself from maturing into a young woman.Shapiro: Yeah, she gets a period. And she doesn t really know what a period is. It s kind of like her Carrie White moment. That s a great way of putting it.Shapiro: And it s the moment she realizes that she s growing up whether she likes it or not. She can t stop it, it s inevitable. And she can t be who everyone wants her to be. She can only be who she wants to be. But it s that moment of panicking of like, Oh my god, I m no longer the same person. I am no longer a little girl. What s going to happen? Like, what will the future hold? It s that kind of situation that s saying, like, OK, you re growing up! You re grown up now! And it s just slapping her in the face. That said, there is a lovely interaction between her and the woman in the gas station who ultimately helps her. After the constant protection and sheltering Niles has put her through, and the, sort of, lessons of not trusting those in the world, this woman pr

You could say that 2019 is the year superheroes were thoroughly deconstructed on television. Between The Umbrella Academy, Doom Patrol, and Amazon’s upcoming The Boys, being a hero isn’t just about flying around, saving the day, and hiding yourself from your closest loved ones. And as The Boys teaser trailer Amazon recently unveiled illustrates, being a hero comes with plenty of “fringe” benefits: including a club where heroes can use their powers in all sorts of debauched ways, a voyeur with invisibility abilities, and various other abuses of powers. But that hedonism comes at a price as the titular Boys set out to knock some sense into the superhero community. But there’s more to The Boys than that NSFW trailer suggests. Here’s everything we know about the subversive superhero series, which debuts Friday, July 26 on Amazon Prime Video.Another Preacher Collaboration(Photo by Amazon)As the trailer boldly touts, the hourlong comic book adaptation comes from executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who finally brought Preacher to the screen after a long gestation with other producers. But the series also comes from the same source as Preacher (pictured above): the comic books of writer Garth Ennis. With artist Darick Robertson, Ennis set out to blast the superheroes apart in 2006 with The Boys. The title was initially published by DC Comic’s Wildstorm imprint, but was cancelled after six issues. According to reports at the time, DC brass became uncomfortable with the series after noticing its corrupt superhero team bore an uncanny resemblance to the Justice League. And considering the first thing the team does is coerce an obvious Stargirl analogue into performing oral sex on them, it is hardly a surprise DC would cancel it outright.Ennis and Robertson soon found another publisher —Dynamite Entertainment — and continued their story for another 60-odd issues. Of course, as often happens with Ennis’ work, the coarseness of its initial story lines gave way to something more nuanced and considered, an element of his writing Rogen and Goldberg clearly enjoy as they keep adapting his comics into television.Cutting Down the SuperheroesThe television version stars Jack Quaid as Hughie, a blissfully happy human whose life turns to crud when his girlfriend is obliterated before his eyes by A-Train (Jesse T. Usher). The speedster hardly takes a moment to consider his actions before running off at superspeed to continue his pursuit of a perp. And while the scene was shocking to comic book readers — and will eventually be shocking to viewers — it is hardly an uncommon occurrence in the world of The Boys. In fact, a shell-shocked Hughie soon finds himself confronted with a standardized settlement agreement from Vought, the management company that represents and promotes the superheroes. He also meets Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), a government agent with a mandate to clip the superhero wings when they get too rowdy. He intends to recruit Hughie into his cadre known as The Boys because revenge is a great motivator. The team also includes Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Butcher’s most trusted ally; Tomer Kapon as unstable weaponsmith Frenchie; and Karen Fukuhara as Female, a quiet killer repurposed into Butcher’s plans for the superheroes. Jennifer Esposito will also appear as CIA Agent Susan Raynor, Butcher’s somewhat unwilling accomplice within the Company. The Light of the SevenThe Boys also focuses on the exploits of those very flawed and corruptible heroes. In the comic book, Starlight (played by Erin Moriarty in the television series) becomes our window into the worldview of the superhero team known as The Seven — which we presume will carry over to television as Starlight is described as a lead role.More akin to a superstar NFL team during a winning season than the Avengers, The Seven bicker about percentages, likeness rights, and their next movie role more than they maintain the safety of the planet. Thanks to the simultaneously beautiful and grotesque artwork from Robertson, the reader is left to wonder if such a team even needs supervillains to fight. They do a great job of being their own worst enemies. As mentioned before, the team is composed of some fairly obvious Justice League stand-ins, including Homelander (Antony Starr), Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott), the aforementioned A-Train, The Deep (Chase Crawford), and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell). From the trailer, it is easy to see corrupted versions of Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Batman in their aesthetics. And also like a major league sports team, The Seven’s destiny is not theirs to control. In the television series, Elizabeth Shue plays Madelyn Stillwell, Vice President of Hero Management at Vought. She plots the team’s adventures and maintains public relations for them when incidents like A-Train atomizing Hughie’s girlfriend occurs. But she is also a cog in the Vought machinery and may have motives differing from her superiors. The Significance of Simon Pegg(Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images)In the early 2000s, capturing a celebrity’s likeness was all the rage in comic books. Marvel s The Ultimates featured Samuel L. Jackson’s visage as its version of Nick Fury well before he was cast in the role. Ultimates writer Mark Millar would continue the trick with Wanted, in which the main character bore an intentional resemblance to Eminem and the story s take on Catwoman featured a woman who looked very much like Halle Berry. On The Boys, Robertson, a big fan of Shaun of the Dead, decided to use Simon Pegg as the basis for Hughie – known as “Wee Hughie” in the book. Pegg was thrilled to become a comic book character and told fans he would gleefully play Wee Hughie in a Boys film should it ever get off the ground. Then Pegg aged out of the role, illustrating just how long it can take for a comic book to become a live action project. But Amazon thrilled fans by revealing Pegg’s presence would still be part of The Boys television destiny. At New York Comic Con last October, they announced the actor would play Hughie’s father. It is an important visual connection to the books history fans will no doubt enjoy when they finally get to see the show.Irreverence Is on Display, But It s Not All The Boys Has to Offer

Mark Gordon Pictures is behind the adaptation, which doesn’t have a home yet, but Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman is in talks to pen it. The movie, itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, revolves around Eastwood’s “Man With No Name,” who arrives in a violent town and uses his brains to trick the local thugs to destroy each other. Eastwood played the same role in two other movies, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, so there should be plenty of material for the series. of any Crazy sequels in 2019 unlikely. Instead, the plan appears for both sequels to be filmed back-to-back, probably in 2020, for release dates in 2021 (and possibly 2022). The other challenge for an ambitious two-movie shoot (go ask Marvel) is getting all the cast scheduled, and Crazy Rich Asians had a large ensemble cast. As for what comes after In the Heights, China Rich Girlfriend, and Rich People Problems, Chu is also now developing Don t Stop Believin about Journey lead singer Arnel Pineda s unlikely route to a dream rock star gig.3. CAPTAIN MARVEL S BRIE LARSON AND HER NETFLIX MOVIE WITH CHARLIE KAUFMAN (Photo by Claire Folger/Paramount Pictures)Brie Larson was very much in the spotlight this week with the launch of the second trailer for next year s Captain Marvel (3/8/2019) (which has people asking all sorts of questions). As it often happens, however, there was actually another story about Larson s career this week, as she is the latest actor to sign on for an ambitious project at Netflix. Brie Larson has signed to star in I m Thinking of Ending Things, Netflix s first film with writer/director Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa, Synecdoche New York). Based on a 2016 novel by Iain Reid, I m Thinking of Ending Things tells the story of a woman s trip to a family farm that leads to an an unexpected detour leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty and sheer terror ensues. Jesse Plemons (of TV s Breaking Bad and Fargo) also signed on this week as the film s male lead. Going back to Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios also released the first teaser this week for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and we may be getting the first Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/5/2019) teaser this weekend (though how that fits in with Spidey s current status is still anyone s guess).4. I TONYA DIRECTOR TAPPED FOR ANOTHER MISUNDERSTOOD HEROINE: CRUELLA?(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)For the most part, Disney s remakes of their animated classics are pretty straightforward (Dumbo is Dumbo, The Lion King is The Lion King, etc.), but then you have a movie like Maleficent, which took Sleeping Beauty and told its villain s story instead. (Let s note real quick here that Maleficent II recently wrapped filming and it s scheduled for May 29, 2020.) Disney is going to do the same thing with their revisit to 101 Dalmatians by adapting it as Cruella, telling her origin story before she ever met all those black-and-white puppies. Emma Stone has been attached to play the young Cruella for a while, and this week, Disney found its director in the form of Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Lars and the Real Girl). Alex Timbers (of Amazon s Mozart of the Jungle) had been attached, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues. Cruella doesn t have a release date yet, but it s most likely aimed at either late 2020 or sometime in 2021. Disney s remake slate currently includes three confirmed for 2019 (Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King) and two for 2020 (Mulan, Maleficent II). Tom Hanks also started talking to Disney last week for Pinocchio, which is another possibility for 2020 or 2021.5. TIFFANY HADDISH AND AWKWAFINA MIGHT BE NEXT JUMP STREET COPS (Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures)One of the funniest parts of 22 Jump Street was actually the ending, which promised a long series of sequels with different themes starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum (Medical School, Foreign Exchange Students, Art School, etc). That was followed, for a while, by talk about Hill and Tatum starring in a 23 Jump Street which was also a new Men in Black movie, but those plans eventually fell apart, and Hill and Tatum are apparently done with the franchise now. Instead, in whatever form the third 21 Jump Street movie takes, the two cops-undercover-in-a-school will be women. Tiffany Haddish broke out after 2017 s Girls Trip, and Awkwafina co-starred this year in both Ocean s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. If deals go through the way Sony hopes, it will be Haddish and Awkwafina who star in the next 21 Jump Street movie. Since she s 39, you might think Tiffany Haddish would have a harder time passing as a student, and you would be right, as she s reportedly in talks to play a cop undercover as a teacher, a mom, or maybe even both. In related news, the Men in Black spinoff now has a title, Men in Black International, which brings to mind the long-running DC Comics series Justice League International. This week, we also got our first image of Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in character, complete with fancy guns and men in black suits.6. ANNE HATHAWAY MIGHT TELL YOU HOW TO GET TO SESAME STREET (Photo by Giles Keyte/Focus Features)Next year will mark five years since Muppets Most Wanted, and since then we haven t heard much about any new installments. Instead, the attention seems to be turning to Sesame Street, which continues to air on both PBS and HBO. Sesame Street is also sort of a thematic cousin of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, which was the subject of this year s hit documentary Won t You Be My Neighbor? So, the time might be right for a different kind of Sesame Street movie. Warner Bros. is reportedly hoping to sign Anne Hathaway to star in their new Sesame Street movie, which will also be a musical. Of particular interest is the name of Hathaway s character, which is Sally. Going all the way back to the original 1969 Sesame Street pilot episode, it was a little girl named Sally who Gordon Robinson first introduced to Sesame Street. (Anne Hathaway, born in 1982, is too young by about 15 years to have actually been in that 1969 episode.) Big Bird, Bert Ernie, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, The Count, Mister Snuffleupagus, and Zoe are all also likely to be in Sesame Street.Rotten Ideas3. THE MUSIC OF PRINCE TO INSPIRE A MAMMA MIA-STYLE MUSICAL (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)During his lifetime, Prince was famously super protective of both his music and legacy (Kevin Smith recounted his efforts to make a Prince documentary in An Evening with Kevin Smith). Since his death in 2016, the music of Prince has been in the public eye, including commercials and a recent all-Prince episode of Black-ish. Universal Pictures had success with the ABBA musical Mamma Mia (and to some lesser extent, it s sequel Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again), and now the studio is hoping to replicate that, but with the music of Prince. Universal has made a deal with Prince s estate for an original movie (ie, not a Purple Rain remake, for example) inspired by the songs of Prince. The reports about the movie specifically reference Mamma Mia!, so don t expect a Prince biopic, but a fictional story that just features the songs. In related news, Universal is also partnering with Issa Rae on a musical romance called Love in America. Considering Universal has had mixed success with Mamma Mia! (the first film was Rotten at 55%, while the second was Certified Fresh at 81%), and considering Prince s music is good enough to stand on its own, without shoehorning it into a made-up story, we aren t especially optimistic here. Maybe they ll prove us wrong.
Today s Ketchup brings you another set of headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies with new roles for Richard Madden, Jessica Chastain, Michael Rooker, Elisabeth Moss, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARVEL S YONDU May SNAP HIS TEETH INTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD AS KING SHARK(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn signed on to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics The Suicide Squad, there have been rumblings that at least one of his Marvel stars would join him. For a while, there was word that might be Dave Bautista as Peacemaker, until recent news that the role will likely go to fellow professional wrestler John Cena instead. Today, we learned that James Gunn still might reunite with one of his Guardians stars, with Michael Rooker now in talks to play the monstrous villain, King Shark. If you re a fan of TV s The Flash, you might recall that King Shark has had some pretty cool scenes on that show. The Suicide Squad cast will also include Idris Elba, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. Gunn is expected to return to Marvel Studios for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he wraps on the DC flick, suggesting a Guardians release date no sooner than 2022.Fresh Developments1. GAME OF THRONES, Bodyguard FAVORITE JOINS MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Tony Gonzalez/Everett Collection)We re now within 10 days of the end of HBO s Game of Thrones, so we re in the midst of a wave of new roles for those many actors. The biggest story for a Game of Thrones favorite this week however was for someone whose last episode was nearly six years ago. Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark, the onetime King in the North, is now in talks with Marvel Studios about starring in The Eternals. If he signs on, Madden would be playing Ikaris, who, in the comics, has been a leader of the Eternals in the past. Angelina Jolie is also starring in The Eternals as Sersi (a long-running member of the Avengers in the late 1980s and early 1990s). Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, HBO s Silicon Valley) and South Korea s Ma Dong-Seok are also attached to play unknown characters. There have also been reports that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay Asian actor, but that role appears to have not yet been cast. The Eternals will be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me), whose two films to date both have Tomatometer scores above 90%. There is no official release date for The Eternals yet, but if the filming start dates align with the Marvel s put out, it might be November 6, 2020 (after Black Widow, which might come out May 1, 2020).2. DISNEY SCHEDULES NEW STAR WARS MOVIES FOR 2022, 2024, AND 2026 (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Every once in a while, a massive story will come out which is actually several all rolled into one. This week, Disney announced dozens of release dates (or changes), including some pretty seismic revelations. Last September, we heard that Disney planned on slowing down the release of their Star Wars franchise, and we now officially know that there will be a three year gap after this December s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Then, starting with December 16, 2022, there will be Star Wars movies every two years; the next two will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. What we don t know is what these Star Wars movies actually are. It s known that Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) has plans for a new Star Wars trilogy. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are also developing a trilogy which is rumored to be set in the Old Republic period most seen to date in various video games. (You can check out a breakdown of five places we think the Star Wars franchise can go in the 2020s here.) We think that some of the release date changes are Rotten Ideas, so please continue to that section to read more.3. BLACK PANTHER’s CHADWICK BOSEMAN TO SLASH AGAIN AS SAMURAI YASUKE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Chadwick Boseman has starred in a few movies now where he was a first. Boseman played baseball groundbreaker Jackie Robinson in 42, he played Thurgood Marshall (the first African American Supreme Court Justice) in Marshall, and of course, Black Panther was a significant first. This week, Boseman signed on for another first in the historical drama Yasuke, in which he will portray the first African samurai in Japan. The historical Yasuke was a Portuguese retainer of Mozambique heritage who was brought to Japan as a slave in the 16th century, making him the first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, [as] Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. It s not yet known who will be directing Yasuke.4. Jane Campion is Back, with Doctor Strange and a Handmaid in Tow(Photo by ©Apparition/courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios has tapped so many top stars (and helped others become stars) that a bunch of new films feature those names. Acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano) hasn t directed a feature film in 10 years (2009 s Bright Star), and she is now preparing to direct The Power of the Dog, an adaptation of the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. For this film, Campion has cast Benedict Cumberbatch (Marvel s Doctor Strange) and Elisabeth Moss of the acclaimed Hulu series The Handmaid s Tale. Like 1994 s Legends of the Fall, The Power of the Dog is a story of ranchers in Montana, with Cumberbatch playing a wealthy Montana rancher who engages in a relentless war against his brother s son from a secret marriage to a local widow (played by Moss). The brother and son characters have yet to be cast.5. IT: CHAPTER TWO STAR JESSICA CHASTAIN TO PUT ON THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE (Photo by Kerry Hayes/ © EuropaCorp USA /Courtesy Everett Collection)Nearly 20 years before acclaimed celebrity documentaries like Won t You Be My Neighbor? and RBG, one of the most successful early documentaries in that style was 2001 s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Fox Searchlight is preparing to produce a dramatic biopic about Tammy and husband Jim, to also be titled The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Attached so far are Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two, Dark Phoenix) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man). Director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) will be working from a screenplay adapted from the documentary. There s no word yet about which makeup artist will be hired to work on The Eyes of Tammy Faye, but whomever it is might automatically be in the running for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.6. CHRIS HEMSWORTH AND TIFFANY HADDISH TEAMING UP FOR BUDDY COP COMEDY (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Universal)Chris Hemsworth is proving himself a master at comedic chemistry – witness the splendor of Lebowski Thor – and a great foil to a strong female co-star (he will be back on screen with Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson in Men in Black: International this summer). The latest female star to sign on to test Hemsworth’s on-screen charisma and comedic chops is Tiffany Haddish, whose career has been blowing up ever since 2017 s Girls Trip. Haddish and Hemsworth will costar together in the buddy cop comedy Down Under Cover, with Haddish playing a cop who teams up with an undercover male stripper police detective.#7. Dark Knight Writer David S. Goyer Rebooting HellraiserJoel MearesBack in the early 2000s, Spyglass Entertainment was a prolific production company which provided Disney s Touchstone with many of its hits, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Shanghai Noon, and 1999 s The Sixth Sense. Spyglass is back in business again as an independent company called the Spyglass Media Group and in the market for new franchises. Their first major project was announced this week: a reboot of the prolific horror series Hellraiser, featuring the erotic horrors of Pinhead and his Cenobite collaborators. When Hellraiser came out over 30 years ago in 1987, there was nothing like it, but since then, movies like Saw and Hostel have made the torture porn horror subgenre almost ubiquitous. Hellraiser is poised to make a big return, and the job of adapting Hellraiser for a new generation is going to David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind comic book adaptations like Blade, The Dark Knight, and Man of Steel, and this year s Terminator: Dark Fate. It s not yet known exactly how Goyer will reboot Hellraiser.Rotten Ideas2. DISNEY S MASSIVE RELEASE DATE DUMP REVEALS VAST CHANGES(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Pretty much every week, there are new release dates or changes for upcoming movies, but usually it s only for a handful of films. This week, Disney announced such a massive slate of new dates and changes that it s had sort of a tsunami-like impact on the calendar. Disney recently finalized its acquisition of Fox s film properties, and part of its ongoing plan is to slow Fox releases down to 5-6 films a year (cut in half from 12 in 2018). Many Fox films are therefore being delayed or outright canceled. For example, The New Mutants (the last Fox/Marvel movie before Marvel Studios takes over the X-Men and Fantastic Four) was originally scheduled for 2018, and now it s not scheduled to come out until April 3, 2020. Harrison Ford s Call of the Wild (February 21, 2020) is one of the other films pushed back into 2020, as is the long-in-development YA novel adaptation Artemis Fowl (May 29, 2020), though that has always been a Disney movie. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has already swept in to take over Fowl’s original August 9, 2019, release date. Disney s slate is also significant for what it doesn t have, such as Fox s various Marvel movies, like Gambit (with Channing Tatum attached), and projects like X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and James Franco s Madrox the Multiple Man.1. AVATAR 2 PUSHED BACK TO 2021 (SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS ORIGINAL 2014 RELEASE DATE) (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Up until this week, it was believed that Avatar 2 would be released next year, on December 18, 2020, following years of delays from its original release date in December 2014. This week, as Disney also revealed an every-two-years rotation of Star Wars movies in 2022, 2024, and 2026, they did the same thing for the upcoming Avatar sequels. The four Avatar sequels (yes, James Cameron is really working on four sequels) are now scheduled for December releases in the odd years: Avatar 2 (December 17, 2021), Avatar 3 (December 22, 2023), Avatar 4 (December 19, 2025), and Avatar 5 (December 17, 2027). Paramount Pictures took quick advantage of the vacuum left by the Avatar 2 move, pushing their own sequel, Coming to America 2, back to December 18, 2020. By doing that, Paramount also made room for the science-fiction drama Infinite, starring Chris Evans, on August 7, 2020. For their own part, Disney also replaced Avatar 2 with their own films, the double feature of Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake on December 18, 2020, followed by Cruella (the live-action 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone), five days later on December 23, 2020. We can expect the next few weeks to have more release date changes from Disney s competitor studios.Like this? 全民倒塔 1. THE AMAZONS FROM WONDER WOMAN MAY GET THEIR OWN SPINOFF (Photo by Clay Enos. ©Warner Bros.)Following the box office success last year of Aquaman, it was surprisingly revealed that an underwater horror movie called The Trench was being planned as an Aquaman spinoff (separate from Aquaman 2, which is scheduled fro release on 12/16/2022). This week, director Patty Jenkins revealed that she also has ideas about a Wonder Woman spinoff, but this one is arguably more directly related to the first movie in particular. Discussing next year s Wonder Woman 1984, Jenkins said that the premise for Wonder Woman 3 is already known, and that the third movie is in the early stages of development along with a spinoff movie for The Amazons. Jenkins did not specify which Amazons would be the stars of such a movie, but one has to wonder if they wouldn t include characters like Robin Wright s Antiope or Lisa Loven Kongsli s Menalippe, whose roles in Wonder Woman hinted at other stories featuring them as the main focus. Other characters with Amazon connections who might warrant their own movie include Artemis and Wonder Girl, AKA Donna Troy.2. SHAZAM! 2 TO TAKE ON BLACK PANTHER 2 AND SPIDER-VERSE 2 IN 2022(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)There will obviously be superhero movies in 2020 (Birds of Prey, Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, Morbius, The Eternals, Venom 2), but it may seem like a quiet respite from the genre when you consider what s coming in 2021 and 2022. That latter year is still relatively far off, so studios are still just starting to announce their plans, but going into this week, we knew about Aquaman 2 (12/16/2022), Black Panther II (5/6/2022), DC Super Pets (5/20/2022), and the animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (4/8/2022), to which Warner Bros. and DC have added two more. Let s start with the sequel to this year s Shazam! (Certified Fresh at 90%), which Warner Bros. has officially scheduled for release on April 1st, 2022. Going back to two of those Marvel-related movies, please take note that Shazam! 2 is being positioned just a week before the Spider-Verse sequel, and a little over a month before Black Panther 2, which means Zachary Levi will quickly have fierce competition from Marvel and/or Sony. The other movie to keep in mind here is Dwayne Johnson s Black Adam, which will come out on December 22, 2021, and which is directly related to the Shazam! mythos (since Black Adam is one of Shazam s arch-nemeses). In related speculation, Marvel hasn t yet scheduled Captain Marvel 2, but it might be in 2022 or 2023.3. YOU D THINK THE FLASH COULD ARRIVE AT THE MOVIES FASTER THAN 2022(Photo by Warner Bros.)The other DC Comics superhero movie that Warner Bros. scheduled for 2022 this week is actually one of the projects that they first announced at a big press conference back in 2014. Many of those movies did in fact get made (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam!), but one of them that hasn t yet is The Flash, starring Ezra Miller. That s partly because directors have come and gone, and the rumored premise has shifted in those years two (including the period when it was subtitled The Flash: Flashpoint). The attached director now is Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT, IT: Chapter Two), and Ezra Miller is still expected to star in the movie as well. The Flash is now scheduled for release on July 1st, 2022, which makes it the second DC Comics movie of that summer, after the animated kids movie DC Super Pets (5/20/2022), featuring such four-legged super sidekicks as Ace the Bat-Hound, Krypto the Super-Dog, and Streaky the Super-Cat.4. LONG-AWAITED JOHN BELUSHI BIOPIC FINALLY FINDS ITS STAR (Photo by Richard E. Aaron/Getty Images)In 1989, future The Shield star Michael Chiklis starred in Wired, an adaptation of the best-selling book by Bob Woodward about Saturday Night Live star John Belushi s battles with drug addiction that ultimately led to his death in 1982. Although ostensibly about John Belushi, that movie however had an otherwise narrow focus on just one aspect of Belushi s life, so it arguably isn t a true John Belushi biopic. However, one has been in development for several years (since 2013), and is now finally moving forward as an independent production. One has to presume that a major obstacle has been in finding an actor who can credibly portray John Belushi (sort of the point, one would presume) and the role has finally gone to Broadway star Alex Brightman, who will soon wrap up his run as Beetlejuice in June. Belushi will be directed by David Frankel, whose most famous movie was probably 2006 s The Devil Wears Prada (Certified Fresh at 75%), itself based on a roman à clef widely believed to be inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
