Well, now there s a movie for it, aptly titled PAW Patrol: The Movie, and frankly, we re a little surprised it took eight years for that to happen. In any case, if you need to keep the little ones entertained for an hour and half, this first film adaptation of the cartoon follows the PAW Patrol s efforts to stem the chaos that erupts when Mayor Humdinger takes over Adventure City. If that sounds about as standard as a children s movie plot can get, you may be surprised to learn that most of the critics who have seen it so far say it s actually surprisingly delightful. Sure, it s fairly straightforward in its messaging and there are moments when it s crystal clear who its target audience is, but it s also strangely refreshing to see kids entertainment this earnest and joyful. Catch this one in theaters or on Paramount+.

(Photo by Jason Bell/NBC)This fall, Jimmy Smits revisits his L.A. Law days with NBC s latest legal drama, Bluff City Law. Whether in series regular roles like NYPD Blue and The West Wing or season arcs on 24: Legacy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Dexter, networks know Smits is the kind of reliable star they want to anchor a new fall show.Bluff City Law is about a father/daughter legal duo who team up to fight injustice. Smits plays Elijah Strait, who reconnects with daughter Sydney (Caitlin McGee) after his wife/her mother’s funeral and convinces her to leave corporate law and join his firm to fight for the very people those companies hurt.Smits told Rotten tomatoes that being back in a courtroom, even a television courtroom with a script, made him realize his TV law was a little rusty.“I remembered a couple of things. Objection!, ” Smits joked. “We’re really fortunate because the technical advisers, consultants have been really great in terms of helping us out with all the procedural stuff. It’s important to me. I’m a stickler on that kind of thing, on any type of thing, whether it’s a cop show [or a lawyer show].”(Photo by NBC)Bluff City Law is the first courtroom drama for McGee, who was glad to have a TV lawyer veteran there to mentor her.“It was called Smits Academy of Law and Order,” McGee said. “Really, the thing that was most useful to me in my research was when we actually got to watch a case and we got to see how performative lawyers have to be and how important it is to keep people engaged and interested in your side of the argument. The case McGee watched was a medical malpractice case where she saw the doctor in question testify on the stand. That just might come in handy for Bluff City Law. So will the jargon.“The whole thing about the jargon, no matter what area it is, it’s part of what we do,” Smits said. “It’s like learning another language almost, right? If you’re playing a doctor, it’s part of the fascinating thing what we do, the research part, whether it’s jargon, the technical aspects of it.”In their first case together, Elijah and Sydney team up against a chemical company whose product they believe caused their client’s cancer.“In terms of the particular case that we were handling, I tried to do the backstory on that and with regards to the real case that it was based on,” Smits said. “Speaking to the people who are the technical advisers on the show, going to cases, it’s all part of what we do as actors. That’s the fun part.”(Photo by Paul Gilmore/NBC)Bluff City Law is set and filmed in Memphis, Tennessee, which automatically gives it a different vibe than Los Angeles. Smits says filming any show in 2019 is automatically more advanced too.“Our show looks a lot different and it’s much more cinematic,” Smits said. “That’s not a slight on L.A. Law at all, but it’s really cinematic, and Memphis is a vibrant part of the show. The look is a lot different. You can actually have drone shots, [but] we haven’t had one yet.”Smits also looks back fondly on NYPD Blue, the landmark 90s cop show he joined in season two after David Caruso left.“I was working on the same lot, so I knew when they had written the pilot that it was going to be ground-breaking,” Smits said. “I didn’t know it was going to be the phenomenon that it turned out to be, so it was kind of fortuitous to me it came back around.”(Photo by Jake Giles Netter/NBC)NYPD Blue pushed broadcast standards for language and nudity in order to show what life is really like for policemen and women. Today, a show like that might be on streaming with no restrictions at all.“A show like that, you could not pitch that show to a network [today],” Smits said. “It wouldn’t happen. It just wouldn’t happen. The landscape of television is much more niche-oriented now. Certainly, edgier topic matter is something that we’ve gone for [on Bluff City Law], but I don’t know if you’re going to see naked butts on our show. That’s not going to happen.”McGee was ready to show Sydney’s love life explicitly, though.“You might see a back though, a naked back, maybe some abs,” McGee joked. “Hopefully it’ll be Barry Sloane’s.”Sloane plays Jake Reilly, another lawyer at the Strait firm. Josh Kelly plays Sydney’s ex-husband Robbie, a detective who is still broken-hearted over Sydney. And while the legal drama is one focus of the series, the Straits personal lives will come into play as well.“We established in the first episode what we’re all about, what the firm is about,” McGee said. “We are a legal drama, but once you really get to know these characters you’re just going to want to know more about their personal lives. You’re going to want to meet their spouses, their exes, see their homes. You’ll definitely get to see more of that.”(Photo by NBC)That, said Smits, will make the legal cases even more compelling.“I think that the audiences will engage more in the legal aspects of the show once they know all of the little character traits that each one of the characters has,” he said.Bluff City Law premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. on NBC.

He was recognized an immediate potential star with his debut The Impossible, the dramatization of a family swept away by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In 2015, he was announced as the new Peter Parker, with Spider-Man swinging over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his debut in Captain America: Civil War, with Peter s wide-eyed sincerity a standout character trait against the superhero mayhem. Holland carried through with two of his own Spider-Man movies and emotional appearances in Infinity War and Endgame.Playing Spidey must take up significant on-camera time, as a lot of Holland s recent non-Marvel work has been voices in films like Spies in Disguise, Dolittle, and Onward. Beyond that, he also kept busy right on through the pandemic, releasing three films The Devil All the Time, Chaos Walking, and Cherry, the latter of which re-teamed him with Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo and he not only has another Spider-Man movie scheduled for late 2021, but he s also currently filming the Uncharted movie as Nathan Drake. The young star is officially a quarter-century old now, and to celebrate, we look at all Tom Holland movies by Tomatometer!

in the film, is also a priest, and a lot smarter than I am. She told me what my movie’s actually about. She said, There’s less and less room for the uncontrollable in modern life. More and more is scaled or measured. Being inspired or getting an idea, are examples. And I said, What’s so special about getting an idea? She said, Well, it’s something you get. It’s not something you buy or prepare. You get it from somewhere. Another great example she gave me is falling in love. You fall, you “lose control,” and you meet something grand. If you’re a young person, you have to appear on social media 40 times a day and you’re being graded all the time. When I walk around, my phone counts the number of steps I take. So much in our lives is measured and controlled. So, if this movie is anything, it’s a fight for the uncontrollable, for letting go. And one of the reasons it might land pretty well right now is because it talks to a very confined, problematic world where people have to stay home and behave rationally. Not only are we in a very measured society, but on top of that, we’re isolated. And there’s, I guess, a sort of need for dancing in the streets and embracing each other and whatever else those crazy drunk Danes do.Finally, what s on your Indie Fresh List?Vinterberg: I’m a member of the Academy, so of course I’ve seen the international contenders, and find many of them extremely good. The Father from the main section moved me a lot, and Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks definitely did, too.Streaming now on Hulu and available on VOD.
SPOTLIGHT PICK!Palme d Or-winner Parasite has now crossed over  million at the domestic box office and over 0 million at the worldwide box office. Adding just over 300 screens last week, the film added another .5 million and cemented itself as a solid hit for indie distributor Neon. Expanding to more screens this weekend, Bong Joon-ho s latest feature looks to keep the buzz going for what many are calling the best film of 2019. The story follows a low-income family as they try to hustle their way to a better life through their association with an affluent family, and it takes several hilarious twists and turns en route to its dramatic conclusion. A condemnation of choosing to ignore the inconvenient suffering of your fellow human beings, presented in a series of accomplished visual metaphors that ll make you rethink all sorts of ordinary household objects, writes Katie Rife of the AV Club.Playing limited screens. Trust us, you ll be er psyched.Recommended: The Best Original Shows and Movies on PeacockRecommended: The Best Movies Available on Peacock
At 40% on the Tomatometer, Godzilla: King of the Monsters didn t fare so well with critics, who largely felt the kaiju action in the film was spectacular but was too frequently sidelined in favor of a half-baked human story. Fans, on the other hand, felt quite differently, rewarding the giant monster battle royale with an 86% Audience Score. That s a far more impressive number than the 2014 reboot (66%), the Monsterverse follow-up Kong: Skull Island (69%), and even the recent Japan-produced Shin Godzilla (74%) all three of which, we might add, were also Certified Fresh according to the critics. In the wake of its box office-topping opening weekend, we decided to take a look through the user reviews for King of the Monsters to see if we could discover what the cause of this rift was, and the results were somewhat surprising. Generally speaking, while RT users tend to agree with critics about the film s shortcomings, the former are far more forgiving. At the end of the day, fans came to the movie to see Godzilla face off against or team up with some of the franchise s most iconic characters, and they got exactly what they wanted. Check out the user reviews and let us know what you thought of the film, and these reviews, in the comments. (Note, some of the reviews have been slightly edited for length and grammar/spelling.)(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)How Are the Action and Visuals?Hard-to-follow CGI overload. Ro, 2 starsGood action, but under a blue Snapchat filter. Bad plot. Buckshot, 2 starsExcessively silly, but the imagery is often jaw-dropping and honestly, what more do you need from a monster movie? Alec B., 3 starsThis movie is awesome. Truly one of the greatest and most epic kaiju movies ever made. The battle scenes were beautifully shot and gave a large sense of scale. A must-see.– Colton H., 4 StarsKing of the Monsters goes full Avengers in introducing King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan for a full-on monster mash. It s by no means a good film, but it s dumb fun watching the titans clash. Zak, 4 stars(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)What About the Writing?Garbage. Pacific Rim was onto something; these guys didn t take notes. NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE STUPID HUMAN STORIES, FFS. Michael D., 0.5 starsNo plot, no point Just a lot of noise! Mary R., 0.5 starsPoor writing, average acting, cliched characters, terrible dialog. Felt like it was four hours long. Todd, 1 starWanted to love it as a Godzilla fan for almost 50 years, but it lacked drama, had laughable and unlikable human characters. The color palette was dark and generally monochromatic. The attempts at one-liners fell terribly flat. The kaijus deserve much better. Brandon M., 2 starsIt s not one of those films that you go to for the writing, that s for sure! But all in all, the kaiju battles were glorious fun to watch and the performances were decent. A good summer popcorn flick! M00vieCritic W., 3.5 starsThe only thing that would have made the movie any better is if they took out all the human actors. For a longtime Godzilla fan, this film had me smiling ear to ear. I cant stress enough how much i loved this movie! Michael, 5 starsReady for a nerdgasm??? KOTM brings the heat. For all the dyed-in-the-wool fans, this scratched the itch left festering since 2014 s good but underwhelming outing. The plot was cohesive, the human elements tied into what was happening with the monsters, and I was searching for some bad CGI, but couldn t really find any. Go see it. I ll be going back for IMAX. Eric, 5 stars(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Will It Satisfy Longtime Fans?Classic Godzilla. Loved it! Wish we saw more of the other titans in action, though. A couple slow spots, but very entertaining. Childhood memories came rushing back.  JLW, 3.5 starsAs a fan of Godzilla: Final Wars, I am pretty satisfied. It s a film that is meant to be watched with little seriousness. And I very much enjoyed the callbacks to the original soundtrack.  Hansen W., 4 starsMovie antagonist didn t make a lot of sense, but at the same time, their ridiculousness echoed that of the Heisei era Toho movies. The monster battles are thrilling, though sometimes I wish they didn t cut away so often. Would be nice if there were some day fights but that s okay. This movie is stuck between whether it wants to take itself seriously or not. This problem rests with the characters some are fun and relevant while others are cheesy and trope-riddled. The score is top notch and the resurgence of the original theme is breathtaking. Overall, if you are looking for classic monster action and are a Godzilla fan through and through, you will have a good time. And if you don t like classic monster tropes then idk why you would go watch this movie in the first place. Seth S., 4 starsIt truly did feel like the Godzilla movies I remember watching as a youngster, except with better visual effects and better acting. The monster action was intense and the visuals were breathtaking. A must-see for every fan of the franchise or anyone wanting to see a good sci-fi/monster movie! Levi, 5 starsAbsolute love letter to the Toho films, full of easter eggs, fan service, and giant monster fights. Easily in my top 5 Godzilla movies (from the U.S. or Japan). Mike S., 5 stars(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Does It Live Up to the Hype?It takes a very accomplished pen to walk this improbability-act of a tightrope balance. This ain t it. Gerald H., 2 starsExactly what Godzilla fans want. Some really cheesy dialogue aside, I couldn t ask for anything better. Critics are just flat out wrong about this movie. GO SEE IT! Adam H., 4.5 starsAMAZIIIIIING!!! Godzilla 2014 was a better Hollywood film, but this was a better GODZILLA movie!! Great job! Looking forward to Godzilla vs. Kong!!! Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) has been something of a question mark since filming first began. Would it continue ideas from 2017’s Suicide Squad? Would it be the quiet reboot of DC’s film universe that began in Wonder Woman? And, perhaps the most important question to fans of the Birds of Prey comic, would Harley take Barbara Gordon’s place as the founder of the team? Many of these questions are answered in the first proper trailer for the upcoming film, in which Harley (Margot Robbie) returns to Gotham City and finds a group of women also in search of a new direction. And since Robbie used Harley to get the Birds of Prey film out of development hell, the trailer is definitely more skewed toward her character. Nevertheless, we may have picked up a few things about the other Birds of Prey. Let’s take a look at what we uncovered from the trailer.Harley and Mistah J Are Kaput(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)While we’ve always known the film would focus on the end of their relationship, the trailer seems to confirm the split will take place off screen. It makes a certain amount of sense, as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is about to supplant Jared Leto’s take on the clown in moviegoers memories. At one time, their break-up was planned to span the Suicide Squad sequel, a Harley and Joker film, and separate films of their own. Bird of Prey moves all of that to a nice, nebulous past. Which, honestly, is for the best. For readers of DC s main comics universe, the pair have not been together for a good long time. But as the pop culture perception of these characters is always a reboot or two behind, a movie entirely about Harley discovering she can stand on her own is a genuinely compelling idea, even if it is taking place inside a Birds of Prey film. It also echoes the character’s ascent from Joker’s gun moll on Batman: The Animated Series to a strong presence in her own right with a long-standing comic book series and a dedicated legion of fans.Hopefully, those fans will want to see the story of Harley’s emancipation told this way.Black Mask Wants To Possess Harley(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)But as the break-up is clearly still fresh, Harley will be going through the stages of grief as the film begins. Her explanation to Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) of what it means to be a harlequin reflects a sense of loss – even if Harley is better off without the Joker – suggesting she may want to find some sort of salve or rebound. Enter Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), a Gotham City mobster also known as Black Mask. From the trailer, it is clear he becomes fascinated with her right quick. Whether that’s because she’s already inadvertently foiled one of his schemes or because he spots her in that nightclub with Canary remains to be scene. Harley’s interest in Sionis also remains to be seen, but we imagine if it happens at all, it will be short lived and it will irk Sionis’s vanity. It makes him a rather well-suited adversary for Harley. A would-be claimant to Harley’s heart is, in a screwed up way, a claimant to Joker’s place in the Gotham City underworld. And for her part, Harley would have no interest in being property in this twisted (even for her standards) game of Catan. The trailer even features her declaring that she’s the one the city should fear. But it s easy to see Sionis not taking no for an answer and escalating things to a street war in Gotham. What that means for the other Birds – as they are announced as targets by the trailer’s end – will no doubt become the focus of another trailer. The Film Maintains The Brighter Suicide Squad Aesthetic(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Earlier photos and posters – and that costume test video from last year – suggested the film would continue many of the visual elements of Suicide Squad’s more striking color palette. But the trailer declares, rather boldly, that the more extreme (and Harley-inspired) tones will form the core look in Birds of Prey. And, frankly, it looks fantastic. The bursts of color in Suicide Squad were centered around Harley anyway, so the neon bright purples and intense golds totally have a place in her solo adventure. At the same time, it makes Gotham City look totally different as theme parks, night clubs, and even the Gotham City Police precinct glimpsed in trailer live in that bolder, brighter world. Additionally, we couldn’t help but notice several shots in the trailer were filmed in and around Los Angeles. Other than a handful of brief shots in The Dark Knight Rises, LA has not properly played Gotham City since the 1960s, and its immediately identifiable sprawl makes for a markedly different Gotham, one that coalesces with Harley’s poppier look quite nicely. It may not square with Gotham s traditional East Coast vibe, but it reflects her new outlook. We also imagine that aesthetic will be quite a contrast for characters like Sionis and the Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) – characters known for being a little more monochrome. You can just about see Sionis’s aesthetic in the white suit glimpsed during the shots where he has Harley and some of the other Birds strung up. Huntress, for her part, is the only person dressed predominately in black throughout the trailer.Harley Has A Sidekick (After A Fashion)(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Okay, Huntress isn’t the only person in dark clothes. At various points in the trailer – most notably at the end – Harley appears to have a sidekick. The character is Cassandra Cain, an established DC Comics entity with storied ties to the Batman Family – she’s a Batgirl.Introduced during the 1999 “No Man’s Land” storyline, the character was the mute daughter of one of Batman’s mentors. After Huntress took over and subsequently gave up the Batgirl identity (for reasons too long to discuss here), Cassandra took it for herself, impressing every member of Batman’s team along the way. She eventually found her voice and continued to be Batgirl for a few years before handing the persona off to fan favorite Stephanie Brown. But that’s a story for another day.In the context of Birds of Prey, Cassandra (Ella Jay Basco) will seemingly serve as a sidekick to Harley, which sort of honors her past in the comics. But we also imagine the sidekick thing will not last long, as Cassandra finds her own identity among these would-be heroes, even if it is tempting to say concepts like heroes and villains may be too simplistic for Birds of Prey. Cassandra s history in the comics supports the possibility Harley s inadvertent tutelage may lead Cassandra in a new direction. At the same time, it is important a Batgirl be part of the Birds of Prey film in some way because, after all, it was originally a Batgirl idea. The Birds of Prey Is Harley’s Idea(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)About half-way through the trailer, Harley announces the only way to defeat Sionis is for her, Cassandra, Black Canary, Huntress, and GCPD Detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to team up. This may end up being the biggest point of contention for fans of the Birds of Prey comic, as the person who originally suggested the team-up to these characters was Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl. In DC Comics continuity at the time, Barbara never recovered the use of her legs after being shot by the Joker in The Killing Joke. She retired as Batgirl, but soon found a new identity as the information broker known as Oracle. With her real identity known only to Batman, she eventually formed an informal strike team comprised of Huntress and Black Canary. As the group became more solidified – and the three shared their secret identities – other females heroes like Lady Blackhawk and Dove began working with the group. But as Batgirl does not yet exist – in any form – in the DC film universe, she cannot serve as the unifying spark for the Birds of Prey. Harley replaces her here, and while it works within the context of the film, some fans may be left wondering where Barbara is and what she is doing. And since Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson is also developing a Batgirl film for Warner Bros, it is possible Birds of Prey will tease her existence in some way. Also, while we’re talking about these characters and the comic book links, we couldn’t help but notice the first shot of Montoya featured her walking out of a squad room with what appeared to be a “last day” box of personal effects (or it could just be full of evidence). A reboot or two ago, the character infamously quit the force in disgust and began a journey which saw her becoming a vigilante known as The Question. Will the film Montoya also find herself behind a mask? As it happens, she is wearing The Question s colors throughout the trailer.Hopefully, the next trailer will tell us more about the other Birds of Prey.Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) opens on February 7, 2020.Like this? 环球体育注册 Between Mad Men and The Handmaid s Tale, there s no questioning Elisabeth Moss prestige TV prowess. And although she s worked in indie films for years, her TV work has always overshadowed her big-screen career — despite starring in dozens of movies since childhood, including 12 Certified Fresh films in just the past decade alone. But in 2020, a year when the film industry has been crippled by a pandemic, she managed to break out in two roles — the Shirley Jackson biopic Shirley, which won a Special Jury Award at Sundance for director Josephine Decker and was released on VOD in June, and the Leigh Wannell horror remake The Invisible Man, which, even in a stunted theatrical run (it came out February 28, just before most theaters shut down worldwide), grossed 4 million worldwide on a super-small budget and earned raves for Moss s performance. A third, Wes Anderson s The French Dispatch, has been delayed until 2021. Between that, the delayed fourth season of The Handmaid s Tale, and Taika Waititi s soccer comedy Next Goal Wins (which could potentially hit screens next year as well), it appears the end of Moss reign is nowhere in sight.Delroy Lindo

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering stories from the last few weeks (because of the holidays) for titles such as Final Destination, Ghostbusters 3, Disney s Hunchback, and Monopoly. This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM CRUISE S MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 COMING IN 2021 AND 2022(Photo by Chiabella James/Paramount Pictures)There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of those examples, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). This week we learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for releases in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. Paramount is aiming to achieve this goal by hiring writer/director Christopher McQuarrie to work on both sequels, following what he s done on the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%) and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to schedule not just Tom Cruise, but his supporting cast, which may include Fallout co-stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. We don t have any indication what Mission: Impossible 7 (2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (2022) might be about, but they will probably feature Tom Cruise doing some of his own crazy stunts. Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020), and he will also be celebrating his 60th birthday on July 3, 2022, possibly around the same time that Mission: Impossible 8 will be released.Fresh Developments1. AN ACTUAL GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS NOW FAST-TRACKED FOR SUMMER, 2020 (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)We ve been seeing year-after-year of reboots and remakes, but only very rarely are they overturned by later films. If you were a big fan of 2016 s Ghostbusters (Certified Fresh at 74%), we have some bad news for you, as Sony is now pulling an about-face. Rather than moving forward with a sequel starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony is aiming to produce a Ghostbusters 3 that will extend the continuity that started with the 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Ghostbusters 3 will be a legacy sequel, with Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) taking over from his father Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters 3 will reportedly feature the teenage kids of the original Ghostbusters, possibly comprised of two daughters and two sons. We even already got a teaser trailer this week for the sequel, which is aiming for a summer 2020 release. In related news, Bill Murray is now signed to reunite with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks, co-starring Rashida Jones.2. BLACK PANTHER S NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN KING GETTING A SEQUEL: COMING TO AMERICA 2The 1988 blockbuster comedy hit Coming to America was #3 at the box office that year, preceding by three decades the success of another African king in last year s Black Panther. We already know Black Panther is getting a sequel, but now we can count on one for the former as well. Eddie Murphy is signed to return as Akeem Joffer of Zamunda for Coming to America 2, which will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle Flow, Black Snake Moan). Murphy and Brewer are coming off their recent collaboration on Netflix s upcoming Rudy Ray Moore biopic, Dolemite is My Name.3. HUNCHBACK (OF NOTRE DAME) GETTING LIVE-ACTION TREATMENTThere are absolutely no signs of Walt Disney Pictures slowing down their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films anytime soon (setting aside whether The Lion King is live action ). In addition to all of the films in development, the next five on Disney s upcoming slate are Dumbo (3/29/2019), Aladdin (5/24/2019), The Lion King (7/19/2019), Mulan (3/27/2020), and Maleficent II (5/29/2020). We can now add Hunchback, an adaptation of 1996 s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to the mix, as Josh Gad is now producing the remake for Disney. (Gad is a frequent Disney star, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen 2.) Gad is not currently expected to star, but that could change with time. Meanwhile, another project, Pinocchio apparently hit a snag over the holidays, with Paddington 2 director Paul King recently walking away (while Guillermo del Toro s Pinocchio is now in development at Netflix).4. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME TRAILER REVEALS MYSTERIO AND THE ELEMENTALS (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)An all-too-common complaint about trailers is that they reveal too much, with the best ones arguably just whetting our appetite without giving away the whole narrative. This summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) has a very thin line to walk indeed, as its mere existence could be a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019). Let s focus instead on what this trailer actually does show, which is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio fighting mysterious monsters called The Elementals. In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be acting as a superhero, but many fans were quick to point out that in his first appearance in 1964, Mysterio similarly pretended to be heroic, as he s traditionally one of Spider-Man s longest-running super villains. (Let s note here that 1964 is some 40 years before Syndrome did something similar in 2004 s The Incredibles.) As for the Elementals, three different Easter Eggs in the trailer seem to suggest that they could actually be Spider-Man s villains Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Sandman (or those could be fakeouts too).5. STEVEN SPIELBERG FINDS HIS WEST SIDE STORY REMAKE S MARIA, ANITA, BERNARDO, AND CHINO Steven Spielberg is getting closer to filming his remake of West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony, with the original film s Rita Moreno also cast in a supporting role. What we didn t know until this week, however, was who would be playing the film s female lead, Maria (played by Natalie Wood in 1961), or her best friend Anita (Moreno s original role). Those big reveals came this week as we learned that Maria will be played by 17-year-old Colombian-American newcomer Rachel Zegler. (You can watch Rachel Zegler performing various songs on her YouTube channel right here.) Anita will be played by Ariana DeBose, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for playing Donna Summer. Anita s boyfriend Bernardo will be played by David Alvarez (Tony winner for Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Maria s would-be-fiancee Chino will be played by Andrés Rivera (of the Hamilton national touring company). Spielberg also reportedly met recently with faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico about their concerns of how their community will be portrayed in this West Side Story update.6. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL LEAD THE WITCHES REMAKE Robert Zemeckis recent adaptation of the documentary Marwencol, called Welcome to Marwen (Rotten at 31%), was both critically panned and a box office bomb. For his next film, Zemeckis is aiming for a more conventionally popular project, with a remake of 1990 s The Witches, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl s 1983 children s novel. Anne Hathaway is now attached to star in The Witches as the Grand High Witch, the role played in 1990 by Anjelica Huston. The 1990 movie was itself a box office bomb, earning just million, but the film has arguably become a family favorite in the 29 years since. Robert Zemeckis new adaptation of Dahl s novel will be set in the Gothic South in the 1960s, with Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) also writing and producing along with both Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity).Rotten Ideas3. KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY  (Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart may not be hosting this year s Academy Awards, but his career is otherwise moving along quite nicely following the million opening weekend for The Upside. Within a few days of those numbers being confirmed, Kevin Hart was quickly attached to two different films, including one that s pretty high profile. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds like a drastic switch. Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board. If we disregard his two Kevin Hart concert movies, Tim Story currently has a seven-movie Rotten streak going that includes Fantastic Four (27%), the aforementioned Ride Along (19%), and Ride Along 2 (13%). Kevin Hart s second new project this week is called Fatherhood, based on the Matthew Logelin memoir Two Kisses for Maddy. Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers) will direct the tragic drama, in which Hart will play a newly single father after his high school sweetheart dies in childbirth.2. VIDEO GAME MOVIES STILL ROTTEN, HOLLYWOOD STILL MAKING MOVIES LIKE JUST DANCE (Photo by Alessio Bolzoni/Amazon Studios)We frequently talk about how bad video game-based movies have been over the years; there isn t a single Fresh film among the 47-plus that have been made. That may change this year with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but even if one of them does earn a Fresh score, it would only be a small dent in the genre s infamous reputation. In the grand Hollywood tradition of doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, we learned about another attempt to bring a video game to the big screen this week, namely the long-running Just Dance franchise. Screen Gems won an auction to the Just Dance rights after competitive bidding. In related news, Warner Bros long-in-development Minecraft movie attracted a new director this week in Peter Sollett, who directed Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist (Certified Fresh at 74%) and 2015 s Freeheld (Rotten at 48%).1. FINAL DESTINATION FRANCHISE BEING BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD (Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)The first Final Destination movie in 2000 earned just a 34% on the Tomatometer, but it inspired a franchise with four more sequels, only one of which scored above 48%. It can be argued that Final Destination, in which the survivors of lethal events are then haunted by death, trying to even the score, was somewhat ahead of its time, given the more recent success of franchises like Insidious and IT. The screenwriting team of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who worked on Saw IV, Saw V, and Saw VI, have now landed a new gig at New Line Cinema, working on rebooting the Final Destination franchise. Those Saw movies, likewise, have pretty Rotten Tomatometers (18%, 13%, and 39%).
