Pictures)It is hard to look at this weekend’s numbers – with A Quiet Place Part II eking out top spot with .7 million over In the Heights .4 million – and not consider this a setback for the box office in many ways. Though none of the fault lies with the theaters themselves: Chicago opened up to full capacity on Friday and other cities are doing the same. Perhaps, after 15 months indoors, folks have reevaluated their necessity to see certain movies in theaters, especially when those movies are available to them at home on the same day. This appears to be another weekend where Warner Brothers’ deal with HBO Max to release movies simultaneously in theaters and at home may have kept another one of their own from being the success it was expected to be.(Should Have Been) King of the Crop: In the Heights Falls Below Expectations, Leaving Questions In Its WakeHow much would director Jo M. Chu s In the Heights have realistically made had it opened last year? Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians began with .5 million in a mid-August slot without major star power in 2018, but tapped into excitement over its celebration of cultures and communities often left out of traditional mainstream rom-coms. In the Heights finally hit theaters after a lengthy pandemic-related delay with a similar pedigree, the addition of a musical element courtesy of one of the most praised lyricists in modern times (Lin-Manuel Miranda), a Certified Fresh Tomatometer Score of 96% (even higher than Crazy Rich Asians’ 91%), and a prime release slot just as the box office was beginning to show signs of life. Yet, it finished in second at the box office this weekend with .4 million, less than half of what Crazy Rich Asians opened to.Now ask yourself: What would In the Heights have realistically done this year had it not also been available on HBO Max? It is a more than fair question, and much fairer than simply pointing at what many consider to be an under-performing number. And in some ways it is a question that Warner Brothers, the studio behind In the Heights, essentially posed to moviegoers against the studio’s own interests: “Is this a movie that I need to see in theaters? Because there is another option It s the same question people have asked themselves for years and it can have a multi-week deliberation: On opening weekend most have already decided to see a movie or not; the week after they may decide to see it because someone they trust told them they have to. But now they have the option of staying home and watching it when word-of-mouth hits. And if somewhere between million and million was a realistic expectation for In The Heights this weekend – which was what some pundits were predicting – it is reasonable to assume that some of those who were excited for the movie did not want to wait to get to a theater and spend an additional - for one movie when they have already shelled out a subscription for a whole month of readily-available entertainment. If F9 puts up some serious numbers in two weeks time – it is coming out exclusively in theaters – could Warner Brothers start thinking of going back on their promise to deliver The Suicide Squad, Dune, and The Matrix 4 both in theaters and on HBO Max? F9 has grossed over 8 million internationally so far.Rotten Returns: Peter Rabbit Suggests Family Box Office Needs Help

This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Batman, Venom, and The Matrix 4.This WEEK S TOP STORYZOE KRAVITZ POUNCES ON CATWOMAN FOR THE BATMAN, PAUL DANO RIDES FOR RIDDLER(Photo by Gregorio T. Binuya/Everett Collection)Going into this week, the only actor that we had heard was in talks to play a villain in The Batman (6/25/2021) was Jonah Hill. Now we have two people confirmed, and none of their names is Jonah. Zoe Kravitz is Catwoman. On Thursday, the news broke that Hill had dropped out of talks to play a Batman villain, potentially because Hill had asked for million, twice what Warner Bros. was paying Robert Pattinson to be Batsy. Whatever his role was, The Riddler is now on the scene, who has signed on Paul Dano. Meanwhile, the search is still on for the third villain: Penguin. In related news, Robert Pattinson also made a surprising revelation this week, saying that his version of The Batman is not a hero.    Other Top Headlines1. MATRIX 4: NEIL PATRICK HARRIS IN, JADA PINKETT-SMITH IN TALKS(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Last week, we learned that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta from Aquaman) had been cast in a new lead role (AKA not Morpheus, etc.). And this week, we heard about two other possible new additions, plus a returning cast member from the two sequels. Let s start with Jada Pinkett Smith, who is now in talks with Warner Bros to reprise her character Niobe, the ship captain. Jada Pinkett Smith s recent roles have included Bad Moms, Girls Trip, and this summer s Angel Has Fallen. One of the new characters will be played by Neil Patrick Harris; various guesses online include a Mr. agent, the adult Spoonboy, or a younger version of The Architect. The third name in play this week is Jessica Henwick, who is probably best known for playing Colleen Wing in Netflix-Marvel s Iron Fist series. 2. ROBERT EGGERS  VIKING EPIC THE NORTHMAN ATTRACTS THE WITCH AND THE LIGHTHOUSE ALUM(Photo by A24/courtesy Everett Collection)This month s spooky black-and-white drama The Lighthouse is only director Robert Eggers second feature film (after 2015 s The Witch), but already the guy appears to be developing his own regular cast of actors. Eggers next film will be a Viking revenge film set in 10th century Iceland, and stars both previous and new to his troupe have been announced. Let s start with the new: Nicole Kidman and brothers Alexander and Bill Skarsgård. The previous: Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe. In related news, Willem Dafoe also this week officially joined Guillermo del Toro s Nightmare Alley remake. 3. GAL GADOT TO PRODUCE AND STAR IN WORLD WAR II POLISH UNDERGROUND BIOPIC(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)It has long been a Hollywood tradition that when movie stars get to a certain status, the opportunity opens up for them to guide their own careersand potentially, those of others) through their own production company. Gal Gadot, whose next major film will be next summer s Wonder Woman 1984, has formed a company with her husband Jaron Varsano called Pilot Wave. The first announced film for the new company will be Irena Sendler, a historical thriller about the life of Polish Underground leader, whom Gal Gadot will also portray. Sendler s organization worked in the Warsaw ghetto of World War II to save over 2,500 Jewish children, among other anti-Nazi efforts.4. JOHN KRASINSKI AND RYAN REYNOLDS TEAMING UP FOR IMAGINARY FRIENDS(Photo by Paramount /Courtesy Everett Collection)After two indie films (Brief Interviews with Hideous Men and The Hollars), actor-turned-director John Krasinski had a surprise blockbuster hit with his third film, the sci-fi thriller A Quiet Place (in which he starred with his wife, Emily Blunt). Krasinski quickly moved ahead with a Quiet Place 2 sequel (3/20/2020), but with this week s news, Krasinski appears ready for another original movie. Krasinski will both direct and costar in the comedy Imaginary Friends, with Ryan Reynolds. The high concept comedy will tell the story of a man (Reynolds) with the magical ability to see other adult people s imaginary friends, some of which, lacking love and friendship, turn to the dark side. 5. JURASSIC WORLD 3 RECRUITS NEW STARS FROM SHE S GOTTA HAVE IT AND SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS(Photo by Netflix / courtesy Everett Collection)A few weeks ago, one of the big stories of that week was that original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill were all returning for Jurassic World 3 (6/11/2021). This week, Universal Pictures appeared to be focusing instead on casting new roles. The first announced was Mamoudou Athie, who is probably best known for his role in Facebook Watch s Sorry For Your Loss, as well as in The Get Down and Patti Cake$. Then, earlier today, Variety also reported that DeWanda Wise of Netflix s She s Gotta Have It is now in talks for a leading role. It s not yet known what sort of roles either Athie or Wise will be playing when Jurassic World 3 is released on June 2021, the same month as Micronauts, Sesame Street, and The Batman.6. THE ADDAMS FAMILY SEQUEL ALREADY IN DEVELOPMENT FOLLOWING MILLION OPENING WEEKEND(Photo by MGM / courtesy Everett Collection)MGM probably had ideas in the work for a sequel to The Addams Family far before its release last week, but following its million opening weekend, it s go time. MGM has scheduled The Addams Family 2 for October 22, 2021, which is the weekend after Halloween Ends. It s not yet known if the original voice cast is also signed  to return for the sequel. 7. NAOMIE HARRIS JOINING WOODY HARRELSON S CARNAGE IN VENOM 2 AS SHRIEK(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)We ve known since the ending of Venom that Woody Harrelson would be costarring in next year s Venom 2 (10/2/2020) as the crimson symbiote-powered serial killer Carnage. It wasn t until this week that it was revealed that Tom Hardy s Venom and Woody Harrelson s Carnage would actually be joined by a third symbiote-possessed character,  in the form of the female villain Shriek. Sony Pictures didn t delay much after letting that news out, however, as just before we went to press today, we learned that Shriek will be portrayed by British actress Naomie Harris (Moonlight, Skyfall). 8. DANIEL KALUUYA WANTS TO GIVE THE WORLD A NEW BARNEY THE DINOSAUR MOVIE(Photo by Polygram Filmed Entertainment/courtesy Everett Collection)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of Barney s Great Adventure, which attempted to take the then-popular kids TV show, Barney Friends and turn it into a movie franchise. The plan didn t work and the TV show went off the air in 2009. Even so, Barney Friends obviously is remembered with some nostalgia by the now-adults who watched the show during its 90s heyday. And so perhaps it s not surprising that a Barney reprise is now in development. British actor Daniel Kaluuya, who is probably best known for both Get Out and his role in Black Panther, has teamed up with Mattel Film (via his 59% production company) to start development on a live-action Barney movie. It s not yet known in what form Barney will be depicted in this movie, but three possible options are: #1 a big purple foam costume like the original TV show, #2 a computer animated (but still cartoony) purple dinosaur, or #3, a full-giant-sized purple Tyrannosaur Rex (the original dinosaurs stood anywhere from 12 to 20 feet tall).

Also, there may even be some clues to the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the events of Endgame buried within Captain Marvel s plot. So let s dive in and see what we can guess about Marvel Studios next few moves from its most recent release.Of course, there are spoilers from here on out. Key spoilers in fact, so read on with caution.Carol Will Be Part Of The Fight(Photo by Marvel Studios)While all the previous Avengers: Endgame trailers have kept her presence something of a secret, Captain Marvel’s mid-credits stinger scene confirmed what just about everyone assumed would be the case – Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) will be part of the fight against Thanos (Josh Brolin). While Carol was not part of the team dedicated to stopping Thanos in the comic book story The Infinity Gauntlet, her predecessor Mar-Vell took on Thanos a number of times prior to the Gauntlet storyline. The release pattern of the two films certainly pointed to Carol’s presence in Endgame, but seeing her arrive at the Avengers base makes the team’s situation seem less dire. As seen in Captain Marvel, Carol is a powerhouse and potentially strong enough to physically restrain Thanos. And even when it comes to the Gauntlet, battered as it is at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, she may have an advantage.Carol Is Powered By The Space StoneBecause the psyche-magnetron – source of Carol s powers in the comics – was just a little too crazy for film, Carol’s powers derive from that old Phase I MacGuffin, the Tesseract. As we learn in Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell (Annette Bening) acquired the Tesseract in the 1980s and began using it to build a “light speed engine” capable of relocating the Skrull population far from the designs of the Kree Empire. Her experiment never really worked out, though, as the Kree attacked her experimental craft. Once it crashed, Carol blew up the engine, saturating her body with the energy of the Space Stone. As Ronan (Lee Pace) remarks late in the film, she’s the real weapon. And we think that might give her an advantage over Thanos if he tries to use the Gauntlet against the Avengers in Endgame. It is possible she may even be able to pry the Space Stone away from his control and make his absolute power a little less absolute. It may just be the thing the rest of the group needs to gain control of the Gauntlet and undo the Snap.At least, that’s one guess. Tying her to the Tesseract and even the Avengers Initiative makes sense on a thematic level, but it also suggests a ways for the Avengers to succeed in Endgame.Carol Hasn’t Aged(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)In the stinger scene, we couldn’t help but notice that Carol hasn’t aged. We’re going to assume that has something to do with the Space Stone energy. And while that may not really be a point to address in Endgame, it suggests subsequent Captain Marvel movies may keep their options in regards to story wide open.According to reports of Endgame footage screened for Disney shareholders on Thursday, Carol tells the Avengers she never returned to Earth because species other than the Skrulls needed her help. Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) page in the Infinity War credit sequence was the first indication Earth needed any sort of help. It suggests no one she knows out in the universe turned to dust, but she had to have noticed people vanishing en masse throughout her area of influence, right? That could suggest the Infinity Stones are not as powerful as legend tells, but we expect the more important aspect of Carol staying away from Earth is to set up future Captain Marvel movies set between the first film and Endgame. Alternatively, her lack of aging opens the door to a Captain Marvel 2 set after Endgame. After all, she has to explain herself to Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Monica Rambeau (Akira Akbar) at some point, right? They cannot be pleased that her estimated return time of “before you know it” is 20-odd years later. And now we have to wonder if either of them survived the Snap.No Skrull Secret Invasion … Not Yet Anyway(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)In one of the more pleasant and interesting turns within Captain Marvel, the shapeshifting Skrulls were not Carol’s ultimate enemy. Instead, we learn they are refugees from a Kree war of aggression. Their ultimate aim: escaping from the Empire’s grasp. In our extensive look at the Skrulls, we noticed they only became aggressive after encountering the Kree, entering into a war that spanned millennia. We were inclined to believe that would be the case in Captain Marvel as well and that it might lead to a Skrull invasion of Earth following Endgame. But with the Skrulls only taking to battle to defend themselves and their nominal leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) becoming Carol’s ally halfway through the film, that Skrull secret invasion seems much less likely than it did a week ago.Of course, we also took note of Mendelsohn s Talos as he proclaimed “this is only the beginning” when he was reunited with his fellow Skrulls aboard Mar-Vell’s ship. That may just be an artifact of the actor playing so many bad guys of late, but it could indicate a heel-turn from the character or the alien race as a whole in a subsequent MCU phase. For the moment, we’re happy to see that aspect of Captain Marvel’s script defy expectations and introduce the Skrulls in a new, sympathetic way.The Infinity WatchAnd while we’re pondering MCU Phases past Endgame, there is always the possibility Carol’s tie to the Space Stone will lead to her taking on a new role: its protector. After the events of the comics  The Infinity Gauntlet, six people were chosen to take care of the Infinity Gems (as they were called at the time) in lieu of anyone obtaining the full powers of the Gauntlet again. The group included Gamora, Drax, Pip the Troll, Moondragon – two characters not yet seen in the MCU – and, shockingly, Thanos!(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)As in the comics, the Infinity Stones of the MCU cannot be destroyed, so everyone is better off knowing where they are rather than scattering them again only for someone (like, say, a Kree commander) to collect them and reassemble the Gauntlet.Should such a plan become an aspect of the post-Endgame MCU, Carol is the obvious choice to guard the Space Stone. She’s already tied to it. The plan would also presumably see Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) reclaiming the Time Stone and the Mind Stone recreating Vision (Paul Bettany). Considering the end of The Infinity Gauntlet, the Soul Stone could be entrusted to Thanos or it could returned to the Red Skull (Ross Marquand) – interesting that the Soul Stone would be safest in the possession of a villain – with the Reality Stone choosing to stay with the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Though her power originally came from the Mind Stone, she has been color-

The NYFCC announced the winners of their 2018 Awards this morning on Twitter. Roma led all winnners with three; Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinametography. Paul Schrader s First Reformed followed with two wins for Best Screenplay and Best Actor. This sets up quite well for Curarón s black and white semi-autobiographical story of his adolescence in 1970s Mexico, as told through the eyes of the woman who raised him. A strong showing with critics groups early will help propel some good will with Academy voters. This morning s announcement also bodes well for Schrader, the writer of Taxi Driver Raging Bull, to secure his ever-elusive first Oscar. The NYFCC Awards are chosen by a group of critics from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, and qualifying online general interest publications. 1.23.0 5月喜迎It’s more than a little surprising to learn that, of all the Coen brothers’ 18 features, Blood Simple is their second-highest rated movie on the Tomatometer. Critically bested only by True Grit (96%), the debut from writing-directing-producing-editing juggernauts Joel and Ethan Coen is Certified Fresh at 94%, beating Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men (93%) and titles that are more synonymous with their tough-to-pin-down, oddball sensibility, whether it’s cult fave The Big Lebowski (82%), dark suburban meditation A Serious Man (90%), high-octane quotable comedy Raising Arizona (91%), or the decidedly un-mainstream thriller that somehow still managed to become mainstream, Fargo (93%). This is by no means a dig at Blood Simple. It’s just that the taut neo-noir likely isn’t the first title brought up when you’re told “I love the Coen brothers” at a party.Shot in 1982, Blood Simple weaves a worst-case-scenario about illicit lovers played by John Getz and Frances McDormand hiding in plain sight from McDormand’s pugnacious bar-owner husband (Dan Hedaya), while a shady and chatty PI under Hedaya’s employ (M. Emmet Walsh) plays the angles. In typical Coen brothers fashion, the plot twists and turns, and things fall apart, and it’s all laid out with a measured, confident visual style that s clever but never too showy. To mark its 35th anniversary, let’s take a look at how Blood Simple offered us glimpses of the greatness to come from Hollywood’s most original filmmaking duo.The Distinct DialogueNobody writes like these guys, and that was pretty clear from the get-go. While Blood Simple’s script has the earmarks of a classic noir — the title nods to detective novelist extraordinaire Dashiell Hammet’s Red Harvest — the Coens screw with the form, tossing in their own brand of verbal playfulness, like the now-classic Coen-ism of different characters repeating phrases. Take the opening exchange between Getz and McDormand, with Getz repeating he “ain’t no marriage counselor.” It’s echoed later, during an icy moment when Hedaya asks Getz, “What are you, a f kin marriage counselor?” The Coens would go on to use the move a bunch in their follow-up, Raising Arizona (“He’s a little outlaw”), Fargo (“Twin Cities”), and perhaps, most famously, The Big Lebowski, another PI movie of sorts (“This aggression will not stand”). Their inclinations to have fun with verbal ticks and regional American accents and, in the case of M. Emmet Walsh, embarrassing bursts of  laughter, is on display in Blood Simple, too, as is a now-familiar way for them to open a film: with a grizzled narrator speaking quasi-philosophically. That’s just how they would later kick off No Country for Old Men (also over shots of barren Texas landscapes), The Big Lebowski, and The Man Who Wasn’t There. The Collaborators(Photo by USA Films)Frances McDormand, who went on to marry Joel Coen, made her onscreen debut in Blood Simple and has since left an indelible mark on the Coen universe in — deep breath — Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo (for which she earned a Best Actress Oscar), The Man Who Wasn’t There, Burn After Reading, and Hail, Caesar!. In an interview about her first role, McDormand explains that her pal Holly Hunter was offered the part, but turned it down to act on Broadway. (As The Atlantic’s Christopher Orr points out in his deep dive into the Coens’ filmography, Hunter, who would go on to co-star in Raising Arizona, does sort of appear in the film, though it s via an answering machine message.) M. Emmet Walsh, too, returns in said sophomore effort as a cackling co-worker. Blood Simple also marks the first in a long line of collaborations — 16 to date — with the composer Carter Burwell, as well as cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, who acted as DP on Raising Arizona and Miller’s Crossing before becoming a sought-after director in his own right with Get Shorty and Men in Black. Both, like the Coens, were in their 20s during the filming of Blood Simple. Fun fact: Editor Roderick Jaynes — a nom de plume for the Coens — also makes his debut here. Way to go, Roderick. The StyleNot unlike Wes Anderson or Paul Thomas Anderson’s debuts a decade later (Bottle Rocket and Hard Eight, respectively), Blood Simple features some Coen brothers hallmarks, though it’s hardly the film you’d single out to explain them to the uninitiated. (Interestingly, all three — sorry, four — filmmakers’ followups put them on the pop culture map with intoxicating aesthetics that aspiring directors would ape.) Yet those traces are there — the facial shadows, the shaky-cam that runs throughout Raising Arizona, the driving shot on a desolate road that’s in a bunch of their features, the emanating light (from under doors, in particular) used to such thrilling effect in No Country for Old Men. Beyond the visuals, there’s a nifty homage to Blood Simple in Fargo — both have characters moving a body on the side of the road while a car fast approaches at night — and narratively, no one in Blood Simple has any idea what the other is up to, a misunderstanding they’d explore often in the years to come, most heavily in Burn After Reading. The Wicked Sense of HumorOn paper, there’s nothing funny about jamming someone in a wood chipper (Fargo), shooting them when they ve got a dopey smile plastered on their face (Burn After Reading), or biting off their ear (The Big Lebowski). Of course there’s not. But when it suits their vision, the Coens have an uncanny knack for rendering hyper-violent moments into something absurd, even oddly humorous. At the end of Blood Simple — spoiler alert — McDormand stabs through Walsh’s hand, leaving it impaled on a windowsill and him trapped in an adjacent room, firing shots blindly through drywall, hoping to strike McDormand. It’s tense, but Walsh’s struggle — up until now, he’s been very much in charge — in this insane, almost slasher movie-like situation is more than a bit amusing. When his fate is set — it’s not good — Blood Simple fades to black, hitting us with the film’s soundtrack mantra, the upbeat soul classic  “It’s the Same Old Song” by the Four Tops, a delicious juxtaposition. The Indie Spirit(Photo by (c) USA Films courtesy Everett Collection)The Coens spent a year trying to secure the .5-mil they needed to make Blood Simple, showing potential investors a homemade trailer to pique financial interests. While on set in Austin, apparently not everyone was convinced this peculiar, low-budget project by two young first-timers was aboveboard: M. Emmet Walsh says he wouldn’t take their 0 check, presumably fearing it’d bounce, and demanded cash instead. While the Coens’ stock has skyrocketed in the decades since (they are now among the few who can work with anyone they want and make virtually any movie they want), the peculiarity that critics loved about Blood Simple hasn’t waned. To this day, there’s an outsider, even defiant originality that runs throughout their films, and we’d be completely shocked if that ever changes.Blood Simple was released on January 18, 1985.

Spoiler warning: The following contains giant spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. So if you don t wanna know what happens, stop right here. Sony Pictures released a new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer on Monday, coinciding with the end of Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s online spoiler ban. And it is no surprise as the trailer is a huge spoiler for anyone who has not seen the recent Avengers movie. Although, considering that film continues to destroy box office records, we would be very surprised to discover someone who hasn’t seen it.As the trailer is a spoiler, it is filled with useful information for those tracking the progress of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a few lingering plot points from Endgame, and info on the upcoming Phase 4 of the MCU. So let’s dive in and examine some of the things we learned from the trailer. It Is Set After Endgame(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)This one might sound obvious, but considering the span of time between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War, there was a suspicion the movie might take place prior to the Snap. Many noted Nick Fury s (Samuel L. Jackson) nice to meet you, Spider-Man in the previous trailer, despite both being at Tony Stark s (Robert Downey Jr.) funeral. Also, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently reframed the film as the last Phase 3 story instead of the first taste of Phase 4. Add Endgame’s five-year time-jump and you get a recipe for a potential Far From Home set sometime in 2017 or 2018.But thanks to its opening moments declaring the passing of Tony Stark and the heart-to-heart between Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), it is clear the film is indeed set after Endgame. That means the film, even if it is the last Phase 3 chapter, will offer audiences a glimpse into the post-Endgame world. In the previous trailer, we saw notable parts of New York being rebuilt, which suggests the Snap survivors left many of the parts of the world to ruin after half the world’s population disappeared. Beyond those background details, though, the Snap and the five-year gap will have a very personal effect on Peter as he adjusts to the world. Most Of Peter’s Friends Disappeared With Him(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Betty (Angourie Rice), and even nominal high school bully Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) are all the same age as Peter – which means they all disappeared in the Snap. That might seem minor, but every single one of them has lost five years. It remains to be seen how many of them returned to a stunned family – in fact, we’re still not clear if Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) lived through the five year gap – or the effect that may have on them going forward. The summer trip to Europe may be as much a chance for them to re-acclimatize to the new world as it is a school activity. But as Laura Harrier and Michael Keaton are currently on the cast list, we expect Liz and her father Adrian experienced the full five years of Endgame. You have to wonder how that changed them We re in the Multiverse Now, and Mysterio Is From A Tangent Reality … Well, Maybe(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It seems the Ancient One’s (Tilda Swinton) fears were founded after all as Fury tells Peter the Snap tore a hole in “our dimension.” Peter is also introduced to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man who claims to be from an alternate Earth. We’re assuming he is from one of the tangent realities the Ancient One warned Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) about in Endgame. We’re also assuming that “hole” is how Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) managed to get back from the tangent reality he created to have a life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).Of course, it is always possible Beck is lying. He is Mysterio after all, a guy who faked an alien invasion back in the comics just to rob a bank. If he’s anything like his comic-book counterpart, he could using the Snap to win Fury’s trust. Alternatively, he could be a dimension-hopping bad guy with an interest in ending Spider-Man across the multiverse. Or should we say “Spider-Verse?” There is also the possibility that he is telling the truth and the MCU will give us a 100% noble Mysterio. But that seems quite unlikely. Peter almost always gets betrayed by the people he lets into his confidence, and we expect this to be no different.Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers’ Superhero Name(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)OK, this is a small one, but considering no one in Captain Marvel or Endgame refers to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) by her superhero codename, we’re clocking this as the first time anyone officially refers to her as Captain Marvel. We also expect the scene in which Peter asks about Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain Marvel will be a little longer and hint at what Bruce, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and some of the other heroes are doing during this latest crisis.Nick Fury Is In Charge(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Also, isn’t interesting to see Nick Fury in charge of an organization again? The manpower and equipment we see in the trailer suggest S.H.I.E.L.D., but S.H.I.E.L.D. patches appear to be absent on the people manning the various work stations surrounding Fury, Peter, and Mysterio in the trailer. Either they have been removed digitally to maintain the surprise or Fury has a new organization entirely. Is it time for S.W.O.R.D. to make its MCU debut? In the comics, their mandate is to keep Earth safe from alien incursions. Would their MCU jurisdiction include alternate Earths? At the same time, the whole notion of tangent realities makes it really easy for Fury to resume his post at S.H.I.E.L.D. while the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series gets its own world to play with. It still makes them connected, just in a less immediate way.Peter Has A Great Iron Man-level Responsibility, And Could Be Phase 4 s Lead Hero(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Considering Phases 1-3 were led by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), the Far From Home trailer seems to position Peter as the key hero going into Phase 4. Or, at least, that seems to be Peter’s perception. That talk with Happy early on literally puts the weight of Iron Man on him. And the subsequent scene with the NYPD officers raises the question with Spider-Man s reality: is Peter the next Iron Man?Since he still has the Iron Spider suit, signs should be pointing to yes. But it also seems likely that the film will confront this key question: Is Peter a kid, playing at being the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, or is he a man ready to lead the superheroes? It is entirely possible he will walk away from the film knowing he is not the next Iron Man, putting someone else in the hot seat. Then again, the film could see this whole Spider-Man “Home” story cycle in a new light as he accepts the mantle, and the great responsibility which comes with it.Should Phase 4 see Peter s friendly neighborhood grow to the size of a galactic quadrant – or a multidimensional band of realities – Far From Home may set him on this path. At the same time, it may also illustrate for him that he still has a lot to learn before he can lead the Avengers – or whatever they re calling themselves now – in the MCU s bold future.Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters July 2, 2019Like this? (Photo by Paramount /Courtesy Everett Collection)All Mission: Impossible Movies, Ranked By Tomatometer Hey, Tom. Paramount here. Yes, the studio. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a new summer franchise out of a 30-year-old TV show, and have it virtually improve with each sequel over 20 years And so Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt has halo-jumped, rock-climbed, motorcycle-duelled, and face mask-revealed his way across dozens of countries to unravel all manner of world threats in the Mission: Impossible movies. He s had help along the way, featuring a cast of series veterans, like Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, and occasional players like Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. Hunt hasn t had too much help from the IMF, though, considering how many times they think their star employee has gone rogue.A trademark for most of Mission: Impossible s lifespan was bringing in a new director for each entry, ranging from John Woo to Brad Bird to Brian De Palma, giving each entry a unique spin. But Since Rogue Nation, Cruise (who also produces) has found a perfect collaborator in Christopher McQuarrie. He was the first to direct two M:Is in a row, with Fallout raking in the series best box office and critical marks. McQuarrie will direct the next two films, both shooting concurrently, scheduled for May 27, 2022 and July 7, 2023.Before we see what death-defying hijinks they get into next (we don t think Ethan s been to the moon yet), we re ranking all Mission: Impossible movies by Tomatometer!
