However, the series took chances and produced memorable sequels that introduced new storylines, likable characters (Kristen and Kincaid forever), and a meta-narrative that actually made Freddy scary again (New Nightmare) after he’d become a pop-culture spouting caricature.Even the Rotten sequels like the Renny Harlin-directed A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (52%, which is honestly not bad for a horror sequel) featured all-time horror kills like the demise of Debbie (Brooke Theiss), the weight-lifting badass who is transformed into cockroach. The producers could have phoned it in after seeing the 6 million worldwide haul (on a .5 million budget) of the first Annabelle, but instead they brought in directors David F. Sanberg (Lights Out) and Gary Dauberman (writer of It and It: Chapter Two), and they took chances (the finger snapping scene in Creation…) that were critically appreciated (68% Tomatometer average) and lucrative (4 million combined worldwide haul).3. Though other zombie movies predate Night of the Living Dead, this franchise kicked the craze into high gear, and you can see its imprint all over popular culture, from The Walking Dead to Shaun of the Dead and countless others in between.One thing that makes this franchise unique is that two of its remakes are Fresh. The 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, directed by Tom Savini, is a Fresh delight that features a better Barbara (she is coming for the zombies this time) and showcases what happens when people realize the zombies are ridiculously slow. Giger s monster creations, and Ellen Ripley, the all-time hero perfectly portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, Alien became one of the most influential horror films ever made. Imagine sitting in a packed theater and witnessing the reactions to John Hurt’s chest-bursting scene, or Ripley’s final battle with the acid blood spewing xenomorph (who is also impossibly goey). Now, imagine sitting in a theater in 1986, when Ripley squared-off against the Alien Queen in James Cameron s sequel Aliens, which earned Weaver a Best Actress Oscar nomination.Aside from Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, Alien and Aliens might be the most impressive back-to-back films in any horror franchise. They helped boost the horror genre to new heights (and not just because they took place in space), and pulled in loads of money during their theatrical runs. If it weren’t for what was to come, the franchise might have landed in the number one spot.Unfortunately, the series did experience some lows in the 1990s and 2000s, as Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, and the Alien vs. Predator films all earned Rotten Tomatometer scores. The Michael Mann-helmed film was a modest success that was praised for its style and performances, but it wasn’t until five years later, with the release of Jonathan Demme s The Silence of the Lambs, that Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) now spelled correctly became a household name.The 0 million domestic haul (4 when adjusted for inflation) of The Silence of the Lambs made it the fourth highest grossing film of 1991, and the five Oscars it won for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay made it not just the only horror film to win Best Picture, but also only the third film ever to sweep all five of the top Academy Award categories (It Happened One Night, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest are the other two).While Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, and Red Dragon (Fresh at 68%) secured the franchise a spot on this list with their excellent Tomatometer and Audience Scores, Ridley Scott’s (kudos to being featured in the #1 and #2 spots) 2001 sequel Hannibal ensured the number one finish here with its 5 million domestic haul; its 40% Tomatometer score didn’t discourage anyone who really wanted to see Anthony Hopkins eat Ray Liotta s brains. Yes, Hannibal Rising (Rotten at 16%) kept the competition closer than Hannibal would’ve liked, but its comparatively high 55% Audience Score helped create some distance from the other franchises.In the end, Hannibal Lecter (and Lecktor) won the day with his murderous charms (and excellent numbers), and that’s why his franchise is #1 on our list.Disagree with our findings? 6.60.2 7月喜迎The 2010s were an exciting time for comic book–based television shows. The decade began with Smallville demonstrating a superhero show could be done on a budget, pull off the occasional iconic comic book moment, and sustain an audience for ten seasons. Almost immediately after it left the air in 2012, a whole second generation emerged to prove you can be faithful to the source material and still strike out in new directions. Soon, we had a whole superhero multiverse dominating one network’s lineup, a S.H.I.E.L.D. television show offering a weekly dose of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even a few shows proving comics can offer television prestige-caliber material.Of course, as we reflect on the decade past, only a handful of shows — or seasons of shows — can truly prove to be exemplary of the types of stories comics pioneered and still make for great TV. Some shows stand above the rest in terms of consistent quality, while others deserve recognition for the key time they got it right or advanced their genres on television. These 10 shows reveal just how wide in scope and far in storytelling we’ve come since Smallville started the 21st century’s comics on TV revolution.Watchmen: Season 1 (2019) 96%With only one season under its cape, Watchmen did two impossible things: 1.) It adapted the classic comic book by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbon, and John Higgins into something wildly different, yet wholly consistent as the source. 2.) It got AT T to pay for a long-form treatise on American racism. And even if that topic had not become relevant in the last few years, Watchmen would still feel worthy for using this specific comic book to talk about these issues. Considering how much the source embeds itself in American history, taking this angle feels like mining the original comics’ great missing chapter. Meanwhile, the show features some powerhouse acting talent with Regina King, Louis Gossett Jr, Jean Smart, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Tim Blake Nelson delivering better and better performances each week. Though the most recent entry on the list, it’s certainly earned its place.Legion 91%Though it wavered in the second season, Legion proved one can take the basic concepts behind the X-Men and make a provocative, meaty, and artistically diverse program. With its dance sequences, rap battles, and genre-bending episodes, creator Noah Hawley put his directors in the driver’s seat as they found unique ways to further the tale of Charles Xavier’s son David (Dan Stevens) and his cohort of would-be saviors. And in the end, it left us feeling as though we watched the most compelling X-Men prequel ever devised. Well, a prequel if you consider the future they showed Xavier (played by Harry Lloyd in the third season) was prevented by him founding the X-Men.Arrow: Season 2 (2013) 95% (Photo by The CW)We’ll be honest, Arrow’s quality wavers in the extreme, but its second season was a standout in terms of achievement and intent. Intended to be a season-long tale called “City of Heroes,” the show expanded its universe with the arrival of Sarah Lance (Caity Lotz), the return of Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), and the debut appearance of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). It was also the year its flashbacks to Lian Yu felt the most resonant. In that story, we see what turned Slade from Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) best ally into his worst enemy just as the present day story carefully built up Slade’s plan for revenge. The show would try to mine that idea the next few seasons, but the device never works as well again as it did here. Also, this season set the standard for all the Arrowverse shows to follow.Marvel's Daredevil: Season 3 (2018) 97% In its final run on Netflix, Daredevil finally found the tone it needed all along: a tense legal thriller in which the plucky lawyer just happens to be a vigilante who fights people on rooftops. Very loosely based on the classic “Born Again” comic book story line, the third season played to all of the show’s strengths by pitting Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox) against Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) once again and pairing down all of the characters to their essentials. This technique even extended to its one major introduction: Wilson Bethel as a not-yet-Bullseye whose usually ambiguous origin becomes definitive and downright compelling. And though we previously said the series felt complete with season 3, we would have loved to see this take on Daredevil continue.Marvel's Jessica Jones: Season 1 (2015) 94%(Photo by Myles Aronowitz/Netflix)Taking its cues from the early issues of Marvel’s Alias comic book and the later Purple story line, Jessica Jones first season continues to be the most satisfying of its three-year lifespan because it is directly about something: surviving rape. Thanks to the stellar performance of Krysten Ritter as Jessica and, of course, David Tennant as Killgrave the program used superhero trappings to talk about astonishing mental anguish and what people do to cope. Consider the way Jessica avoids any sort of support while Malcom (Eka Darville) almost immediately forms a support group for Killgrave’s victims. Sure, Jessica’s ultimate answer is violent, but it is cathartic. The story also gave the series a focus it would never have again even as it continued to produce quality work.Swamp Thing: Season 1 (2019) 92%Swamp Thing was not just true to its comic book roots, it was true to a whole genre of comics DC’s horror titles of the mid-1980s and early ’90s. Moody, gothic, and as often about relationships as existential terror, they were the post-Punk books DC needed to produce. And as a short-lived DC Universe original series, Swamp Thing captured this feeling in episodes like “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” in which an old evil in the swamp returns, passing from person to person as it tries to create more death and despair. The story feels like a single issue of Hellblazer or Swamp Thing while also serving the program’s ongoing plots. The series also served up the production values Swamp Thing always deserved. Sadly, that dedication to quality and fidelity meant the series enjoyed an all-too-brief life.The Walking Dead: Season 8 (2017) 65%While the series made a number of strides since Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) woke up in that hospital — and some wavering moments in quality — season 8 and its “All Out War” story line may be the best run of the series to date. It is the last time the core characters were unified, both physically and in purpose. Say what you like about Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but he brings people together — even if the vast majority of them united just to bring him down. And there is that magic moment when Negan met Shiva. The season also gave Rick the win he so badly needed, even if it cost him his son Carl (Chandler Riggs). For a show loathed to traffic in happy endings, this was Rick’s chance at a vanquishing a foe and the closest it could come to letting its protagonist have anything remotely “happy.”DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 3 (2017) 88%(Photo by The CW)Proving superheroes can be wildly funny while still saving the universe, Legends fully shed the dour trappings of its first season with this inventive and off-beat year. The initial story saw the Legends fixing time after nearly tearing it asunder the previous year. But their efforts to patch the timestream also let a literal demon into their world. John Constantine (Matt Ryan) made a few appearances to help with the magical angle while Zari Tomas (Tala Ashe) arrived to abuse her snack privileges aboard the Waverider and call out the team for their constant failures as heroes although she proves equally disposed to goofing off in the end. Also, the season gave us Beebo, and how can we resist its strange must-have-Christmas-gift power?Wynonna Earp 92%(Photo by Michelle Faye/Wynonna Earp Season 2, Inc./Syfy)Born of a somewhat obscure 1990s Image Comics title, Wynonna Earp fills a niche so under-represented that its dedicated fanbase is now as much a part of the story as the chronicles of the title character. Returning to her hometown, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) discovers her legacy has a supernatural element and that her family is nothing like what she believed it to be. Playing loose, fast, and funny with language, mythology, and the heart, the show never shies away from its influences or weaving tension into its comedy. And as its cast grew and the world-building deepened, it did for horror tropes what DC s Legends of Tomorrow does for the DC Comics milieu. The result is a seemingly light show with the power to de

This year’s jury, led by director Spike Lee, will determine which film with take home the golden laurels, but we also have a host of films from the Une Certain Regarde section and out-of-competition sections that already have us buzzing.The Venice Film Festival managed to scale itself down during the pandemic, and Sundance hosted an all virtual affair, but Cannes marks the first major festival to welcome stars, critics, industry insiders, students, and fans to the festival in over two years. All eyes are be on the French affair to see how well they can navigate COVID-19 restrictions, which have prevented most in-person gatherings and devastated the film festival calendar. Cannes Festival Delegate Thierry Frémaux has stated that he intends to have full capacity at the various theaters, and though attendees are encouraged to be vaccinated prior to attendance, it will not be required. For starters, the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on Marvel Studios’ release calendar (Black Widow was delayed more than a year) and its shooting schedule; production shutdowns meant that Falcon and the Winter Soldier, once slated to be the studio s first Disney+ series, ultimately had to follow WandaVision. Speaking of series: Disney launched its streaming service, Disney+, in November 2019, and with it came those two Marvel Studios series, plus Loki, currently airing, along with a dual same-day streaming/theatrical release of movies like Black Widow that will test the superhero giant’s box office might.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Then there was the corporate stand-off, in mid-2019, between Sony and Disney over deal terms related to their partnership on the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, an impasse that threatened to pull Holland’s Peter Parker from the MCU together. We asked Feige about that period, one which he describes as “an emotional few months,” as well as other major moments for the studio over the last several years, including the recent acknowledgment that Loki Laufeyson is bisexual – and thus the first openly LGBTQ+ Marvel MCU character we’ve seen on screen – as well as the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman and what that means for the future of Black Panther.Plus, Feige gives us rare insights into what we can expect from Phase Four’s big newcomers, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals. But, in this first part of our interview, he takes us up to Black Widow, beginning with a look back at a moment from Phase Three that still brings him chills – and one which gave millions of fans a sense of hope as the world was mired in lockdown. The Viral Clip of Audiences Reacting to Endgame “Took On New Meaning, Even For Me Personally, During Lockdown Last Year” Relatively early on in the pandemic, that clip from inside with audiences at Avengers: Endgame’s first theatrical run, went viral – with the people cheering for the on your left moment and when the portals opened up. It was wonderful because it reminded me of Endgame and the year before – I think I was in one of those theaters where somebody had recorded that – so that feeling was very special. But coming in the midst of this pandemic, when we had spent so much time in our homes, not surrounded by other people, it was a wonderful reminder of community and of a shared experience. We’ve all shared the pandemic experience apart, but that clip did take on, I think, new meaning, even for me personally, during the lockdown last year – not just a memory of the year before and the wonderful achievement that the Russo brothers and our entire cast and everybody at Marvel Studios pulled off with Endgame, but a promise of the future and of being in a theater again and having a shared experience like that someday in the future. [Editor’s Note: Feige attended a fan screening in late June the day after this interview was conducted.] But every time we make a film, it is with the expectation of delivering on a promise of an experience, to be experienced together in a theater. And seeing where people laugh or seeing where people get very quiet and still, or where people cheer if we should be so lucky, in moments in the movie… We spend years and years trying to work up to those moments, and being in a theater and seeing it and seeing it happen, there s nothing better. Every decision we make is from the point of view of sitting in a crowded theater experiencing the story. (Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)“When Bob Iger told us his desire for us to produce shows for Disney+, it gave us a new avenue, frankly, to do something we hadn t been considering before: a deep dive on characters who deserve a deep dive but hadn t had the chance yet.” What you see now in Phase Four is still the combination of work of five or six years, in some cases. In the case of Shang-Chi, 10 or 15 years in the past – we have been working towards a Shang-Chi movie for many, many years; towards the Black Widow movie, as everybody knows, for many, many years. So those were always set as films. When Bob Iger told us about Disney+ and about his desire for us to produce shows for Disney+, it gave us a new avenue, frankly, to do something we hadn t been considering before, which was really doing a deep dive on characters who deserve a deep dive but hadn t had the chance yet. It took us four or five films to tell even a tiny story of Wanda Maximoff and The Vision.Same thing with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. It s a testament to those characters, and particularly to those actors, that the audience fell in love with them in what really amounted to a relatively short amount of screen time and a handful of films. But we knew they were being underutilized, both the characters and the actors, and we really wanted to have a showcase to show off how amazing those characters are and how amazing those actors are – and certainly Tom Hiddleston as Loki, as well. And also to do it in a new medium and do it in a way that couldn t be done in a feature film. (Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)“By the first few episodes of WandaVision, people are asking, ‘Where is Agnes going to show up again? What else is she going to do?’… Within the MCU, [Kathryn Hahn’s return]  can’t come soon enough.” We were all fans of [Kathryn Hahn] at Marvel Studios. And she had come in for a general meeting coincidentally right around the time we were trying to cast Agnes-slash-Agatha. It was one of those, Why didn t we think of this before? Louis D Esposito [co-president of Marvel Studios] actually sat down and had a general [meeting] with her. And it very quickly went from that: She s great. What could she do for us someday? Anyway, who s going to play Agatha? We really have to cast this part. Wait a second… It was honestly almost exactly like that.One of the great things in building the MCU is seeing audiences respond to characters that they were not expecting or that they were not asking for. I wouldn t say there was a huge contingency of people banging down the door for Agatha Harkness to appear in the MCU, but she s a great character portrayed by a great actress. And by the first few episodes people are asking, Where is she going to show up again? What else is she going to do? I think the same thing s happening right now with John Walker from The Falcon and Winter Soldier series and certainly with Mobius M. Mobius as portrayed by Owen Wilson in the Loki series. So, that is something that is so important to the MCU: including new characters. The comics are filled with many lifetimes of spectacular characters and when you find the best actors to portray them it can quickly go from an audience never hearing of a character to them upset with us that we haven t already announced their own standalone movie. And that makes us all very happy. Rotten Tomatoes: When will we see Agatha next? Someday. Someday soon. You will see Kathryn Hahn in Knives Out 2 next, then maybe an assortment of other things. That is what we were interested in exploring.” Of primary importance [with the creation of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier] was allowing Anthony Mackie to show the full range of what Anthony Mackie can do. Such an amazing, amazing actor, and same thing with Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. But when old man Steve Rogers handed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Endgame, you could see a complexity in Anthony s performance there. Old man Cap says, How s it feel? And Sam says, Like it belongs to somebody else. And old man Steve says, It doesn t. It s yours. It wouldn t be that simple. It wouldn t be that simple for anyone to step into those shoes that Steve Rogers had worn, but particularly for Sam Wilson, wearing the red, white, and blue in America would be complex. That is what we were interested in exploring. That s what Anthony was interested in exploring – our fellow producers, Zoie Nagelhout and Nate Moore. And thankfully when Malcolm Spellman, our head writer, came on, is really when all of that it turned into the series that you saw.It is a series that he had written with his writing staff before the pandemic. We d started shooting that before lockdown. So [that was] in 2019. Some people have asked, Were you surprised that it become even more relevant after 2020? What we d gone through? And what Malcolm says is, Well it was relevant in 2019 as well, it s been relevant for 100s of years, which is exactly correct. Figuring out a way to both wear the red, white, and blue with pride, and acknowledge the past at the same time, seemed like an interesting needle to thread and one that we needed filmmaker like Kari Skogland and writer like Malcolm Spellman and his team to pull off. That thread will certainly continue into the future [in Captain America 4]. Yes, with our new Captain America. (Photo by © Marvel Studios)The Loki Team has taken “the TVA conceit that we ve loved so much and turned it into an entirely different way of looking at the MCU and looking at the timeline of the MCU.” I think everything we do, I hope, are building blocks towards the bigger MCU while actually just being entertaining pieces of art in and of themselves. The Loki series explores an organization from the comics that we ve been obsessed with for years at Marvel Studios called the Time Variance Authority. And honestly, 15, 20 years ago [we were] going, This is a great idea. I wonder if we could ever do something with this… Honestly, [we were] thinking it was a pipe dream that would never come to fruition. (But Avengers was a pipe dream 20 years ago.) And now that we have this series, our producer Kevin Wright and our director Kate Herron and our head writer Michael Waldron and executive producer Stephen Broussard have taken the TVA conceit that we ve loved so much and turned it into an entirely different way of looking at the MCU and looking at the timeline of the MCU.And yes, the potential of alternate realities that we ve heard whispers of from the Ancient One and from other characters in a few of our movies [is there], but [we re] actually being able to explore it and try to understand it in, again, a rather subversive way – in a very bureaucratic organization that may or may not be telling the truth about the way things work. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“Tom can take that enthusiasm with his immense amount of talent and really rally a crew behind him as well, which is what he did on that show.” Tom [Hiddleston] is as great an actor as they come. He s as charismatic a person as there is, but he also honestly loves that he s been given this chance, from the moment we hired him with Ken Branagh on the first Thor film to the response that episode three [of Loki] got the other week when it debuted on Disney+. Tom is just as enthusiastic from that first call to each episode of Loki coming out. And that is so important. I think all of us at Marvel Studios try to maintain that enthusiasm and acknowledgement and humility of how lucky we are to be in this position. Tom can take that with his immense amount of talent and really rally a crew behind him as well, which is what he did on that show.One of the other things that s personally so exciting about continuing a franchise for this long is getting to evolve your relationship with the cast. Tom started as an actor that Ken Branagh knew who – as people may know – famously auditioned not for Loki, but for Thor, and then felt very thankful to get this job as Loki. I now find myself thankful that he said yes and that he is an executive producer on this Loki series and is helping us make the series what it is. Relationships evolving over the years is one of the other great pleasures of working with spectacular talents like that. All Rights Reserved.)On Loki’s Bisexuality: “Representation is important across the board and the comics chart the path.” Representation is important across the board, and the comics charts the path in almost all ways for what we do in the MCU. And in the comics there are many LGBTQ characters and we want to showcase that on the screen as well. We want to bring those characters to life on the screen. As Stan Lee used to say, Marvel represents the world outside your window. And outside of our window there are all different types of people in all different types of places with all different types of preferences and we want that reflected in the MCU and in our fictional world as it is in our real world. So it is of utmost importance that when people go in and see one of our films, or log on to Disney+ and watch one of our series, that it represents the true world outside their window when it comes to the types of people portraying the heroes and the characters in our world. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“That Scarlett chooses to continue to work and to bring Natasha Romanoff to life is a testament to the character of Natasha and how rich she is in the comics and how much more there was to explore.” Scarlett Johansson is just the perfect representation of an amazing actor lending their talents to our stories for a decade. That is an amazing privilege to have and one that we don t ever take for granted. She was nominated for two Academy Awards in one year, a few years ago! She is spectacular and could do whatever she wants. That she chooses to continue to work and to bring Natasha Romanoff to life is a testament, I think, to the character of Natasha and how rich she is in the comics and how much more there was to explore – and a testament to Scarlett, who likes bringing these complex characters to life. It really is a perfect representation of when you find a perfect actor willing to dedicate their talents to an amazing character from publishing that you can go 10 years on and be on the verge of their first standalone movie – and thankfully our first movie in a theater in almost two years. I just can t wait for people to see in a theater, or on Disney+ if they want. But to get out there and see what Scarlett and the entire team has done. Soon after we cast [Florence], I think she was nominated for Little Women, which was amazing. And again, like Scarlett, being able to traverse these worlds of classic literature like Little Women and moving over to what we consider also classic literature of the Marvel comics – and do both with equal import and with equal pouring of their heart and soul into it, which everybody, all of our filmmakers and writers and the entire team at Marvel Studios do. Florence did that tremendously well.The very first question that often comes out of people seeing Black Widow for the first time is when will Florence Pugh show up again in the MCU? And my answer to that is always “not soon enough,” because she s amazing. It’s another testament to Scarlett – who knew exactly the movie that we were making, who was a part of the development of the movie – [that she chose to] make that film an ensemble and to surround herself with new characters portrayed by new actors entering the MCU and allowing them all to shine, knowing that lifting them up lifts up the whole movie, which is what a smart producer does – which Scarlett is. So every compliment that Florence or David [Harbour] or Rachel [Weisz] or O-T [Fagbenle] get on a movie, I also turn back to Scarlett for being so smart to allow the film to be a showcase for multiple characters, which is what the best of our films can do. The Paleolithic cult movie is a prototypical 90s comedy: It s broad, goofy, and Pauly Shore is never more than 10 feet away off-camera. Airheads and George of the Jungle were more in that 90s style, while 1998 s Gods and Monsters showed off Fraser s range. (Though School Ties, released the same year as Encino Man, had already proven some dramatic chops.) The Mummy turned Fraser into an international star, with the 1999 blockbuster remembered fondly today.But flops began to mount (Monkeybone, Dudley Do-Right, Looney Tunes: Back in Action), and though Fraser was in Best Picture-winner Crash, so was half of Hollywood. Even The Mummy unraveled: The box office returns for Returns were good, but the Rachel Weisz-less Tomb of the Dragon Emperor bombed, killing the franchise in 2008. By 2010, we were witnessing Fraser getting blasted by skunks in Furry Vengeance and yelling Miley Cyrus! as an expletive. After 2013 s Gimme Shelter, Fraser seemed to be no longer cast in movies.At the end of the decade, Fraser s voice was being heard again. He was Robotman in DC Comics series Titans. Well-received by fans, Robotman got upgraded to main status in spin-off Doom Patrol. Along with a recurring role in The Affair s third season, Fraser s re-appearance made audiences wonder about the likable, genial actor s long absence. The question was answered in a 2018 GQ interview, where Fraser alleges he was sexually assaulted in 2003 by Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and was subsequently blacklisted by the industry for speaking out.From this revelation (and more, like a contentious divorce, surgeries from doing stunt work, and the death of his mother), Fraser has emerged as a populist figure in the celebrity world, one whose fans are drawn to because of his survival through mistreatment and struggle. Ghcxuf solved.Hoffa’s connections to organized crime began in the 1930s when he was a union activist in New York, and it was here that the young Hoffa first gained an audience with mafia dons Russell Bufalino and Angelo Bruno. After years of moving up in the Teamsters Union, all while making shady backdoor deals with the East Coast mafia, Hoffa became president of the Teamsters from 1957 until 1971 and turned it into one of the most powerful in the world.But, on July 30, 1975, just four years after stepping down as Teamsters president, Hoffa vanished without a trace. The unsolved disappearance has led to countless theories of what happened, including ones that posit Hoffa was either buried underneath Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, compacted in a car and sold as scrap metal and shipped to Japan, or buried under a suburban Detroit driveway. The one commonality is that they all agree the mafia had him taken out.The teaser trailer released today seems to have higher ambitions than just exploring Hoffa s rise, fall, and presumed death, however. With frequent allusions to John F. Kennedy and the role of big business and the government, it seems like The Irishman will tackle the connections between a tangled web of organized crime, crooked unions, and American politics in the 20th century.The Cast and Crew(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)We first got a glimpse of the type of talent in this movie in the initial teaser (even though it was only their names), but now we finally get to see some of the greatest actors in film history and one of the most beloved and revered directors of all time doing their thing.We all know the work Scorsese, De Niro, Keitel, and Pesci have done together, including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino, but adding Pacino to that crew is the pistachios on the cannoli.In the upcoming film, Pacino plays Union leader Hoffa and De Niro plays his friend and alleged killer Sheeran, while Keitel and Pesci play bosses of rival East Coast crime families.But the talent doesn’t stop there, as The Irishman’s roster is both top heavy and deep. In addition to these heavy hitters, the film will also feature Oscar winner Anna Paquin, two-time Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale, two-time Emmy nominee Jesse Plemons, and Emmy-winner Ray Romano.In case you weren’t keeping count, that cast features actors who have been nominated for a combined 19 Oscars, 35 Golden Globes, and 27 Emmys, and have collectively taken home five Oscars, five Golden Globes, and seven Emmys. And that’s just in front of the camera.Between Scorsese, screenwriter Steven Zaillian, editor Thelma Shoonmaker, and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, the talent behind the camera has combined for 25 Academy Award noms and four wins.So, with all that talent and excitement, how has it taken so long for this film to get made?The Journey(Photo by Andrew Cooper/Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)This film has been a passion project for director Martin Scorsese for years, with news coming about the potential film as far back as 2008. (That same article refers to Scorsese s adaptation of Shutter Island as an upcoming release, just to give a sense of how long ago 2008 was.)Since then, the film has floundered in development hell, and Scorsese moved on to directing other long-gestating passion projects like Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street, and 2016’s Silence. But Scorsese kept coming back to the story of the most famous mob hit in history, and finally, in 2017, Paramount and Fábrica de Cine came together to co-finance the film and aim for a 2019 release.So how did it end up on Netflix, you ask?The BudgetYes, like all things, it comes down to cold, hard cash.Initially targeted for a 0 million budget, the movie s cost soon ballooned to nearly 0,000,000 after the production opted to use a CGI de-aging technique to make De Niro, Pacino, and co. appear younger while playing the younger versions of their characters.Because of this price tag (and perhaps still feeling the burn left by Silence, which cost upwards of million and took in less than million at the box office), Fábrica de Cine and Paramount decided to back out of the project less than a year after agreeing to fund it.Fábrica de Cine producer Gaston Pavlovich explained this difficult decision, saying We quickly realized that Marty and De Niro really thought that the aging process was going to be a very important aspect of this film. The traditional model was not going to work with this new vision of the project [we could not] risk that amount [of money] when all our data was telling us that it was not going to come back. Thankfully, Netflix stepped in, and the importance is not lost on Scorsese, who recently said, “People such as Netflix are taking risks. The Irishman is a risky film. No one else wanted to fund the pic for five to seven years. And of course we’re all getting older. Netflix took the risk.”(Photo by Netflix)Even so, the CGI de-aging comes with both budgetary and cinematic concerns. Previously used on Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button, Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy, and Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War, the de-aging technology has advanced in recent years to appear more natural, but still remains costly. So costly, in fact, that until Samuel L. Jackson (and, perhaps less noticeably, Clark Gregg) was made to look 25 years younger in the recent Captain Marvel, it had only been used sparingly.Editor Thelma Schoonmaker called it a “risk,” saying, “We’re youthifying the actors in the first half of the movie. And then the second half of the movie they play their own age. So that’s a big risk. We’re having that done by Industrial Light and Magic Island, ILM. That’s a big risk.”While it might be cool to see young Pacino, young De Niro, young Pesci, and young Keitel in the same scene, it could also venture too close to the uncanny valley and take the viewers out of the film.Schoonmaker has also expressed some trepidation over how the public is going to view seeing a 30-year-old Pacino, De Niro, et al. in a 2019 movie: “I haven’t gotten a whole scene where they’re young, and what I’m going to have to see, and what Marty’s going to have to see, is ‘How is it affecting the rest of the movie, when you see them young?’” In that same interview, the eminent editor said that, of the few people they’ve screened the movie for, “nobody minds. Nobody minds watching them play young, because they’re gripped.”While we don t see too much of the de-aged film legends in the teaser trailer, what we do see looks pretty good. On first impressions, the one shot of a young De Niro talking on the phone might be a little distracting, but this is just the first glimpse, so that s a given. With what is sure to be stellar directing from Scorsese and brilliant acting from some silver screen legends, audiences likely won t even notice that there s a 40-something Robert De Niro in a 2019 movie.The Release(Photo by Paramount Pictures)As one of Netflix s main prestige productions for 2019, it was always expected that The Irishman would be released at the heart of awards season, and now we have confirmation.It was recently announced that The Irishman will celebrate its world premiere as the Opening Night film for the 2019 New York Film Festival on September 27. Most likely, the film will be available for the general public a few weeks later in theaters and on your couch.Previously, Scorsese has expressed his disdain for movie-watching on small screens, saying that when he was growing up, films “had to be shown in certain ways — people went to a movie, it wasn’t something you could choose or pick up, or walk out of the room. You actually made a commitment. bob盘口 With Sunday’s Critic’s Choice Award ceremony done, all of the prominent critics groups have had their say on the best films of 2018. Each year, countless critics associations host year-end awards to recognize exceptional filmmaking, but the National Society of Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, and Broadcast Film Critics Association are carefully considered when making Oscars predictions. Each group will say they are independent to the academy in voting, tastes, and identity, but they help shape the race for the big one. And so we have our eyes on them.Our Awards Leaderboard tracks major critics groups and guilds honors, and looking at the current leaders, we think Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Favourite should feel fairly confident of some Oscar love when the nominations are announced on Tuesday. (Regina King, Olivia Colman, and Richard E. Grant in particular would not be risking much to set an early alarm.) This year, though, there have been coordinated efforts to bring lesser-known films and performances into the conversation, so we re also expecting a number of surprises among the noms. Where might those surprises come from? Below, we re looking at Oscar long shots who might just have enough buzz – and which have a couple of awards already in the bag – to break through with some Oscar voters.Toni Collette, Hereditary (2018) 89%  Best ActressAlready recognized by: Gotham Awards, Film IndependentDo we need to say more about what Toni Collette did in Hereditary? It seems some may have forgotten the greatest full body performance of 2018. In the movie – which caught fire at Sundance and made an impact at the box office – Collette gifted all of us with a face-screwed-screech-filled-terrified performance that takes at least three viewings to fully deconstruct. The Aussie actress started strong this awards season with a Gotham win followed by a Film Independent nomination, but then things went quiet. Collette would be vying for the open fifth Best Actress nomination – assuming favorites Colman, Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, and Melissa McCarthy all come through as expected. She will need those horror lovers in the Academy to champion her incredible work.Yalitza Aparicio, Roma (2018) 96%  Best ActressAlready Recognized by: BFCA, Gotham Awards(Photo by © Netflix)It s worth noting the star of the most awarded film of the season has gone largely unrecognized. An unknown actress, in a black-and-white foreign language film, distributed on a platform many Academy voters herald as the end of cinema, is a hard sell. Director Alfonso Cuarón has repeatedly said Roma does not exist without the women who inspired and made it, but the accolades have not exactly come streaming in. In Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical love letter to Mexico and the woman who raised him, Aparicio gave depth and aching authenticity to a character rarely featured on screen. Cuarón painted a masterpiece, but Aparicio is the canvas, paint, and brush.Steven Yeun, Burning (2018) 95%  Best ActorAlready Recognized by: LAFCA, NSFC(Photo by @ Go Well USA)Yeun’s performance as a South Korean playboy in Burning is ethereal, charismatic, and unnerving. Another foreign language entry, Lee Chang-dong’s noir-thriller slowly unravels and builds to a climactic twist you don’t see coming – and so much of it rests on the former Walking Dead star s performance; our thoughts on Yuen’s character, Ben, mirror how we interpret the events of the film. Is he just a spoiled playboy formulating sinister plots for entertainment? Or is he a calculating psychopath? Or maybe just a guy who likes to burn greenhouses? It all rests on what we see in Yuen, in his gaze or sly smile. It’s a tightrope to pull off a likable Oscar-worthy villain, and Yeun makes it look effortless. The formula worked for Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men, so fingers crossed.Debra Granik, Leave No Trace (2018) 100%  Best DirectorAlready Recognized by: Film Independent, National Board of Review, LAFCA(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)In a year littered with exceptional work by female directors, it’s hard to justify their lack of inclusion come award time. The Rider, You Were Never Really Here, A Private Life, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and Destroyer all are worthy of recognition. But Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace distinguishes itself from even those stellar entries – and not just because it still sits at 100% on our Tomatometer after 200 reviews. Director Jane Campion may have said it best in her impassioned plea for Leave No Trace: “A film filled with compassion… it has had a powerful impact on audiences. Not because it is loud, but because the truth that Granik speaks quietly can be heard even in a noisy world.”Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade (2018) 99%  Best ActressAlready Recognized by: Film Independent, Gotham Awards, DGA, BFCA, NYFCC(Photo by © A24)Cringeworthy Cinema: that’s how Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade and its star Elsie Fisher charmed their way into our hearts. Reliving the painfully awkward moments of adolescence with such unflinching honesty, Fisher gave the best performance of the year that we had to watch through fingers and stooping down in our seats. (OK, maybe tied with Collette – but for very different reasons.) Burnham’s script is the quintessential coming-of-age story for the YouTube generation and, as with Roma, his film lives or dies by its central performance. As Kayla, Fisher is relatable and endearing for tweens and their parents, finding a perfect blend of earnestness and mortification.Ethan Hawke, First Reformed (2017) 93%  Best ActorAlready Recognized by: Film Independent, Gotham Awards, NYFCC, BFCA, LAFCA, NSFC(Photo by © A24)Ethan Hawke often remarks that he doesn t want to be known just for the Dead Poets Society. But after the over 30 years, 80 credits, four Oscar nominations, and countless more beloved performances, Hawke still hears Oh Captain, My Captain on the regular. His turn as the conflicted and apathetic Reverend Toller is miles away from any previous role he has done. Many are taking notice: With a near clean sweep of the critics associations, Hawke s performance in First Reformed is second only to Regina King s in Beale Street in regards to acclaim this season. Why isn t he a lock for an Oscar nom? Hawke s lack of movement outside of the critics groups awards does not bode well. Like most young Vietnamese-Americans, she is of the first generation to be born here, her parents having left Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon in the 1970s and the communist takeover of the country. Bui s mother s upbringing in a French-speaking school in Vietnam translated to bookshelves in America filled with Western classics like Jane Eyre, Les Miserables, and Little Women. Those, along with Studio Ghibli films like Castle in the Sky, Kiki s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke ( A lot of blood and gore in that one for an eight-year-old child ) were the foundations of Bui s writing aspirations, and making it onto the Tomatometer as a film critic. Find her on Twitter: @htranbui.Theaters are opening up again. Have you been back yet?Quiet Place II was my first one, and then In the Heights was the next day. So I went from not going to theaters for over a year to going to the theaters twice in a row. Actually, the day that I went to see In the Heights, I went to see the Wong Kar-wai retrospective special that they re doing at the Lincoln Center in New York. Then the In the Heights screening showed up, and I was like, I ll just do both. So I went to see three movies in theaters within two days.It was great, but it was surreal. Still doing social distancing, but because these are both just press screenings, they re just like, Sit where you want, but also don t sit next to people. That was nice, although I feel like it kind of diminished some of the effects of seeing both of these movies in theaters. Because A Quiet Place was very much about that communal theater experience, everyone gasping and holding their breath at the same time, but as for Quiet Place II, and I feel like this also led into my thoughts on the movie, which I think were also lightened up on that aspect, it felt less like that communal experience because we re all just kind of far apart and there s only six other people in theater.What movie did you watch last year during quarantine that you wish you saw in theaters?I would ve liked to see Bill Ted Face the Music in theaters, less so for seeing on the big screen and more so for seeing the people, just because it s a movie that, like a lot of comedies, it demands being seen with a bunch of people, and laughing by yourself with your computer on your lap isn t as fun as laughing with a group of people with the same jokes. I think Face the Music came at such a specific time that it was this hopeful movie about coming together, about facing the odds as humanity, and that felt very resonant during the pandemic and during quarantine. That one made me a little emotional, even. But I feel like even seeing that together with a bunch of people would ve been even more impactful. I don t even know how it would play now, just because I feel like the timing of it was so specific to the fatigue that we re feeling during COVID. But I feel like that one, I would ve liked to see with people, just to share in our misery together and our hope for something that can come through and still make us laugh.(Photo by Columbia/Everett Collection)What s required viewing for you?The Before trilogy. They have such great, effortlessly written scripts, and one that feels so natural and organic and yet also is rife with so much character drama and building and dynamics within it. There s an ebb and flow within the movie, within the dialogue, and even though it s completely plotless, there is a plot within what these characters are saying to each other and how they re interacting with each other. Every movie is such an interesting snapshot of each age, too, that altogether they become this experiment with time that I think Richard Linklater has tried to recapture with a lot of his later movies, with Boyhood, for example.What s the hardest review you ever had to write?One that was more recent and which I just spent a lot of time on because it was something that was so personal to me. That s Raya and the Last Dragon. I spent a couple of days writing that. That one I kind of turned into part review, part personal essay. Raya and the Last Dragon, in particular, because it was Disney s big Southeast Asian animated movie. It was going to have Disney s first Southeast Asian princess, it had Kelly Marie Tran, who s a Vietnamese-American actress, so there s just a lot riding into that movie. I had a lot of complicated feelings with it because I thought it was good to an extent, but it didn t quite fulfill all of the promises of diversity and representation that it was billed to do and, in the process, I think lost a lot of what could ve made it good by trying to be so big and universal and ended up being nothing very specific.So I spent a couple days just picking that apart, both the movie itself and my own personal feelings about it. I think I wrote something pretty good. Before I started writing film criticism, I remember my journalism class, they always talked about how you shouldn t put yourself into the story. It should be as unbiased and as distant as possible. Of course, going into film criticism, it s all about your own personal opinions and beliefs and your own personal relationship and how this movie affected you. I can t help but making a lot of the reviews that I write very personal, deeply personal at that. I think often the better ones I write are the personal ones, the ones where I draw on some of that experience.I do feel kind of weird sometimes because I feel like I m exploiting my own personal life for other people s entertainment in a way, other people s pleasures, and it always feels a little weird to me that I m just putting little pieces of myself out there in these tiny personal essays about movies. But I think that that s the way that people interact with art anyways, the best way to communicate how something moves me or something affects me. So Raya and the Last Dragon, for sure, was one that I spent a lot of time thinking of.Then another one that was deeply personal, too, but wasn t really a review, was this piece I wrote about Da 5 Bloods. The depiction of Vietnamese characters in that movie, honestly, were the best attempt by any Hollywood movie so far, but still falls extraordinary flat because it tries to, I think, connect the Black Lives Matter movement and effects and legacy in a way that doesn t totally cohere. I wrote about that, and I wrote about my own personal thoughts watching that movie with my mom, actually, and the kind of mixed feelings I had, and her thoughts on the Vietnam War and about the American response and involvement in the Vietnam War. That was always really interesting to me, and it was something that was a little bit tangled and knotty, and I don t think I fully picked it apart and untangled it as much as I could ve. I haven t gone back to read it because a lot of pieces that I find deeply personal, I don t like to read again and be like, Oh, well, I could ve written that better, because now it s out there, I don t want to think about it anymore. But, at the same time, it s something that I put a lot of thought and care into.(Photo by Warner Bros./Everett Collection)What s a Rotten movie you love?I feel like there s a lot of cooler answers, but Wonder Woman 1984. I gave it a positive review, and I was one of the first wave of people to give it a positive review. Then the Rotten Tomatoes score slowly went down and then nose-dived. But I stand by my positive assessment of it. I think that it is a movie that moved me, and I acknowledge the flaws that it had, but I feel like those were minimal compared to how the movie itself worked for me. Speaking of Bill Ted Face the Music, I feel like it falls in the similar vein of being a movie that comes at a certain time that it feels very important and optimistic and has that bent during the quarantine times. So that obviously affected me a lot because of that. But I think, even so, it s a fun, optimistic, loud, very goofy movie, and that s the kind of movie that I unapologetically enjoy.What s a Certified Fresh movie you don t like?I didn t love Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I m actually a fan of Quentin Tarantino, and I actually really liked Hateful Eight, which is a movie that most people disliked. Hateful Eight is such a nasty, mean movie that I felt like was Tarantino looking inwards at how his displays of violence are seen in the general public and saying, Hey, this is actually awful, and I m going to make you look and make you feel terrible about it, and I loved that. I thought that was so self-aware and interesting.Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I actually don t mind the lightness of it. I don t mind the hangout element of it. I think that that part of that was actually my favorite part of it, and the idea of these men who are on the cusp of being redundant and no longer being a part of that big cultural core was really interesting and also kind of this self-aware thing that a lot of auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese are doing in their late stages of their career. They re looking back at their lives and their careers, and they re saying, Oh, we re no longer viable anymore. That was interesting.I feel like the Manson stuff and how that looms over the entire movie and casts a whole shadow over the movie doesn t really work for me and, as a result, just makes that final act feel so intensely out of left field that I left the movie with a bad taste in my mouth. I ve also never felt that kind of same interest and fascination with the Manson family murders as I think a lot of American people do. Coming from Vietnam, we kind of came after that whole 1969 cultural touchstone pivot, and it s not something that s part of my own cultural memory. I ve always thought that the fascination with the Manson family has been a bit on the ghoulish side, so painting Charles Manson as this big monstrous villain and making 1969 this big cultural turning point and these murders this big cultural turning point is not really interesting to me and just doesn t work as well for me as I think that the movie wants it to.And, of course, there s the whole Bruce Lee scene, which I thought was completely unnecessary. I think that they could ve used any other New Age Hollywood actor in that. They could ve used Chuck Norris, for example. I felt like it would have the same effect versus Bruce Lee, whereas when I was watching it in the theater and everyone was laughing at everything that the Bruce Lee character said, it just felt very uncomfortable to me. I did not like that, although that itself didn t tank the movie for me. It was just the entire, I guess, approach to this being the center of the world, this being this big turning point. That just didn t feel like, to me, something so exciting and interesting as I think the movie and a lot of its lovers feel.(Photo by Madhouse./Courtesy Everett Collection)What was the movie that made you want to be a critic?Satoshi Kon s Millennium Actress was a movie that just opened my eyes to what movies can do and be because it s sort of this non-linear movie that plays with both reality and fiction. It follows this young girl who meets this man in World War II Japan, and she s a young child, and she falls in love with him, and she decides that she s going to spend her whole life trying to find him. To do that, she decides that she s going to become an actress and be on the biggest stage so that he ll find her again. The movie is so interesting about it. It s framed around these two documentary filmmakers who are interviewing her as she s an older actress, having retired, and she s talking about her life. The entire movie plays through this story that she s telling, and it goes between her real life and the movies that she stars in, in which she always stars as a young woman who s pining after someone and always trying to find someone, so it s this reflection of her reality and her fictional career.The way that it switches between both and the way that the line blurs between that reality and fiction was so interesting and eye-opening for me. Of course, the ending in that movie is so quick and easy and something that you can t even do in a lot of live-action, too, because there are shots that linger for a fraction of a second, and in live-action, that would be something that you have to set up. It takes a lot more time to do it. But in animation, you can just throw it in there, and that s fine. I think that that to me not only opened me up to filmmaking and movies but also to the potential for animation, which I m a big flag-bearer for. But, yeah, that movie itself was like, Wow, movies can do this. Stories can be told out of order, and things can be this reality-blurring thing. I was really enamored with that movie, and that kind of set me on that path.On Rotten Tomatoes, readers are currently voting on their favorite Disney animated movies. So: Lion King or Hercules?The Lion King, for sure. It s the gold standard for Disney renaissance movies, and Hercules kind of comes in that late era where it s very self-effacing and self-referencing, which is fun but doesn t age nearly as well.Beauty and the Beast versus Little Mermaid.Ooh, that s actually an interesting one because Beauty and the Beast is my personal favorite. Little Mermaid is the one that did kick off the entire Disney renaissance of the 90s, but I m going to have to go with Beauty and the Beast. I think it s a masterpiece.A lot of people went nostalgic with their movie-watching during quarantine. Did you re-watch something that surprised you?Happy Feet. The George Miller movie before Mad Max: Fury Road. I was shocked by how dark that movie is. I thought it was just, as I remembered, a movie about a tap-dancing penguin, but it gets dark. It starts to be about pollution, and it becomes this epic Lord of the Rings-style journey across the Arctic, and it almost ends on this extremely bleak note where the penguin is stuck inside this aquarium and thinks he s never going to leave, and you re like, What is this movie?
