Broad City has paved the way for plenty of female-fronted comedies currently on TV, like Hulu’s PEN15, Netflix s animated Tuca Bertie, and Pop TV’s just-premiered Florida Girls — so honoring the groundbreaking sitcom in its fifth and final season would be a fitting end for the series. – Jean BentleyTuca & Bertie 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTuca Bertie is for those wondering how their lives will go on after the end of Broad City. Creator Lisa Hanawalt’s buddy comedy goes to some pretty heavy places, but with a more surreal and absurdist bent. There’s an array of talented actors voicing the supporting characters (Steven Yeun! Richard E. Grant! Isabella Rossellini!), but Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish really bring the endearing, sloppy charm of these characters to life. An Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance nom for either would be awesome, but the show’s adult themes and newness probably won’t work in its favor. – Sara AtaiiyanOne Day at a Time 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTalk about a Cinderella story. Imagine this: The critically acclaimed sitcom reboot that Netflix axed following its third season, but which — after a long fan campaign — was saved by Pop, takes home the Emmy for Best Comedy. Gods, wherever you are: Make it happen. It would be a miracle of course, but it would be a well-deserved one. One Day at A Time, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce and executive produced by Norman Lear, has shown that the multi-camera sitcom can still be hilarious, heartfelt, and just as edgy as many of the rougher-edged comedies on streaming and cable. The setup is simple — a working-class Cuban-American family lives in an apartment building where they are friendly with their hipster landlord — but the character arcs and writing are anything but. Watch how skillfully the showrunners blend complex narratives about immigration and gentrification into the laughs, and how organically season-long storylines coalesce. It’s smart, underappreciated stuff. As are the performances, particularly from Justina Machado as the mother trying to keep everything together and Rita Moreno as the scene-stealing live-in grandma, Lydia. – Joel MearesBoJack Horseman 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesSeason 5 gave Bojack his Horseman-aissance after being cast in an edgy TV show. We also got a deeper look at supporting characters Diane, Princess Carolyn, and everyone’s favorite asexual, Todd. Maybe it’s because of and not despite the fact that it’s a cartoon that allows the series to deal so astutely with questions about what it means to be person who’s trying to be better, and the #MeToo movement. – AtaiiyanFleabag 100%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesPhoebe Waller-Bridge is seemingly a lock for a comedy actress nomination, but with the comedy series category overstuffed with hilarious options, we’re unsure if this member of our exclusive 100% club is an underdog or a frontrunner. Look at the contenders: Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, The Kominsky Method, The Good Place, GLOW, Russian Doll, black-ish, Schitt s Creek, Better Things, and on. What’s a Fleabag got to do to get some recognition around here? – Debbie DayThe Good Fight 95%, Outstanding Drama SeriesThis tight and punchy spin-off to The Good Wife is the single best reason to subscribe to CBS All Access (and there are a bunch of very good reasons its competing against, with The Twilight Zone and Star Trek: Discovery available on the streaming service). The super-smart and sometimes surreal legal drama offers fascinating cases — many of which touch on “big issues” in tech and politics in small and intimate ways — and a compelling crew to tackle them. Chief among that crew is Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski, who deserves her Emmy, now!), who featured in The Good Wife, and she’s well-matched by rising star and new mom Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), senior partner Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), and the scandal-hounded young Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), who’s taken a liking to Fentanyl lollipops in season 3. The Good Fight deserves its nomination not just for being the smartest legal drama out there, but for being one of the few shows on TV right now to grapple with — and laugh at — some of the meatiest issues in American politics, law, and society. – MearesBusy Tonight , Outstanding Variety Talk SeriesBusy Philipps translated her personable, intimate online presence into a TV show that felt more like eavesdropping on friends hanging out than a traditional late-night series, which made Busy Tonight’s untimely cancellation sting a little bit more. The actress proved to be both a likable and skilled host, and her accomplishments deserve to be recognized. – BentleyEmmy Rossum, Shameless 82%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesFor years Emmy Rossum has been turning in some of the best work of her expansive career on Shameless, and for years the TV Academy has been ignoring her in favor of William H. Macy’s much showier role as the deadbeat patriarch of a large Chicago family. But Rossum’s performance as the eldest child keeping her siblings together as they struggle to keep their heads above water is at times hilarious and heartbreaking, and what better way to repent for their years of ignorance than by the Academy recognizing her work in her final season on the show? – BentleyCatherine O’Hara, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesCatherine O’Hara has never won an Emmy award for acting, and that, in and of itself, is criminal. O’Hara, who currently stars as matriarch Moira Rose on Canadian Pop TV sensation Schitt’s Creek is as good as it gets. Schitt’s Creek itself deserves all the awards. From the writing to the acting to hair and makeup, the series is genuinely one of the greatest shows to ever hit the small screen, but what O’Hara brings to Moira makes the character so special and the actress so deserving. She has given an unlikable person a depth and a growth that is unseen in on television today. She is eccentric, she is quick-witted, she is wearing a fabulous wig, and she truly deserves to be in the conversation for best actress in a comedy series. – Zoey MooreSuranne Jones, Gentleman Jack 90%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama SeriesNot content to simply act the role, Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones paints her worldly, outsider character, Anne Lister, with bold strokes into otherwise placid scenes of lush 19th–century West Yorkshire, England. When she takes on local graft, she bares her teeth with such palpable menace that in her more vulnerable moments — as when she confronts a skittish lover — her tears break hearts. But in a category stuffed with meaty dramatic roles performed by names more familiar to voters, Jones, like her Lister, seems an upstart with an uncertain fate. – DayStephan James, Homecoming 78%, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama SeriesSam Esmail’s Homecoming was one of the best reviewed series of 2018, and it’s not hard to see why. This taut adaptation of the beloved narrative podcast played out like 11 little shots of Hitchcock — a slow burn that caught fire as the story evolved, back and forth through time, with twists upon twists and some of the finest performances of the year. Julia Roberts has been rightly lauded for her put-upon Heidi Bergman, and Bobby Cannavale gives excellent Cannavalian obnoxiousness as Colin Belfast. But Stephan James, as military veteran Walter Cruz, gives what could be a pretty cold affair its warmth and heart and makes that final diner scene so damn devastating. – MearesAnnie Murphy, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy SeriesYes, Twitter, we know, and we agree: Catherine O’Hara is everything in Schitt’s Creek, and the fact that she doesn’t have four Emmys on a shelf somewhere right next to a collection of Moira Rose wigs is some sort of crime against comedy. But let’s shine equal light on Annie Murphy, who plays the younger socialite-in-the-sticks, Alexis Rose, in the Canadian series. It’s the less showy role — no wigs, no accent — but it’s also stealthily a bit of genius. Murphy plays a ditzy rich girl mid-awakening and every season her characterization deepens. She still gets to nail those insane Alexis lines alluding to a wild past of kidnappings, engagements, and foreign dignitaries, and put out the occasional puppy-dog whine. But she’s also increasingly real, grounded, drawing us into her increasingly tender relationships with her family and Ted. David, giver her an Emmy nom, like, now! – MearesLike this? After directing a series of absurd comedies starring Will Ferrell like the Anchorman movies, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers, Adam McKay took a soft turn into more adult territory with 2015 s The Big Short, an unusual and inventive look at the housing bubble that led to the 2008 financial crisis. This week marks the next step in his evolution, as he tackles the rise to power of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney with similar storytelling panache in Vice, starring Christian Bale as the enigmatic veep, Amy Adams as his wife Lynne, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, and Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush. Critics say McKay s irreverent tone sometimes feels like a mismatch for the serious material the film covers, but it s nevertheless an ambitious undertaking that s made better by strong performances from its A-list cast especially Bale, who disappears into the role under eerily spot-on makeup and more than a few extra pounds. Based on 1990 novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the Amazon Prime limited series tells the story of agents of God and Satan who want to stop the Apocalypse — simply because it sounds like a terrible idea. That doesn t mean he s not open. He is completely open. So you ask him a question, and it s really considered. It s not, You don t need to worry about that. It s this is just what s happened, or I think you should try that, or whatever it is. You know, everything is very considered. The Antichrist Has Never Been More EnchantingAntichrist Adam Young has the wide-eyed English-schoolboy charm of classic heroes like Mark Lester’s 1968 Oliver or any number of Nicholas Nicklebys throughout the cinematic age – until, of course, the boy inherits his powers. Aziraphale and Crowley’s attempts to manage the situation are akin to trying to stop a tornado with a butterfly net — a magical butterfly net, but still.7. Anathema spends most of her time chasing a McGuffin, but in the end contributes greatly to the stop-the-Apocalypse cause.“There s a big difference between a tough female character and a strong female character and Anathema s strong, she s very in her essence,” Arjona said. “She s a woman and she s sure of herself and so unsure of what she s doing and messes up, and she s flawed and she doesn t get it right all the time — sometimes she does — and she has this guy that s following her and never falls into romance. She’s like, ‘I gotta do what I gotta do — maybe after babe. I ll catch you later.’ She s doing her own thing and I love that about her, and I wish a lot of other characters would be like that because relatable to me, and I see my friends and the way they deal with their careers and their own life, and it s very similar to Anathema.”Richardson’s Madame Tracy is a very rich character, who, despite her own flaws, endures a level of verbal abuse and emotional sabotage from Shadwell.“Madame Tracy has her own strengths. She, in some ways, feels a bit retro. I mean, her part is retro, and the fact that she s making a living in the way she is, is a bit retro. But at the same time she s providing an incredible help in the community, and she s also very supportive, and she s trying to be a little bit life-enhancing … so there are those feminine traits, things showing. She takes care of Shadwell, and she looks out for people. It s rather lovely, but she s her own woman.”Good Omens sets out to prove a love bond between the prostitute and the Witchfinder, but where she definitely shuts the door on the risk of her infidelity, his name-calling promises to continue.“I know it is a bit questionable,” Richardson said, “but maybe it s, pardon the pun, better the devil you know. I don t know, you know? She s practical.”8. Unique Artistry(Photo by Amazon)The production design, effects, and costuming on the series lend a distinctive voice to the characters’ surroundings. Several of the actors noted that the costumes and unique environments helped them fully inhabit their characters.“There s an opportunity to sort of portray this guy as the boss that everyone has, that everyone hates, who s constantly smiling and telling you, ‘Great job,’ while also subconsciously saying, ‘You re terrible,’” Hamm related. “And, I ve worked for that guy before, and I ve hated him, and it was kind of fun to play. Just like, ‘Everything you re doing is wrong. Keep going.’ And, I got to wear so much cashmere in this, that it was A: warm, B: soft, C: comfy. But yeah, there was a lot to recommend for being on the heavenly side of thing, from a fabric point of view.”Arjona similarly credited the series’ style choices for aiding her performance: “I just tried on her boots and something happened, and I got really lucky because I didn t have to do much work after I tried on her boots.”9. An Uncompromised Creative Vision(Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images)With Good Omens, Gaiman sought to fulfill a deathbed wish of his collaborator on the book, Terry Pratchett, and so, dug in his heels.“Being the writer was relatively pleasant and entirely stress-free in that nobody was really waiting for this. I wrote it, I promised Terry I would write it, I wrote it, did the adaptation, divided the book into six, every 50 pages: OK, that s episode one, that s episode two. Fair enough, I ll write a mini movie through time that will kick off episode three. That was all simple and very stress free,” Gaiman said.“The problem is that I d promised Terry Pratchett that I would make a TV show that he would want to watch, and I d learned through my previous outings in television — some of which have been incredibly successful and some of which hadn t — that the measure of which were successful and which weren t were not the quality of the script to begin with; it was what actually wound up on the screen at the end. And I thought, OK, I have to be in a place where I can control that, where I have a director who I can work with who we share a vision with, where I can cast the people who I see in my head, where I m there just making sure that a producer who — producers don t understand scripts. I wish they did, but they don t —”MacKinnon: “Some of them do.”“Some of them do,” Gaiman conceded. “A lot of the time, what a producer will do when they go, ‘OK, we have X amount of money. We have this in the script and here is a sequence that is both expensive and if we lose it, we ll save a day of filming and nobody s going to notice if that scene is gone,’ completely failing to understand that if they pull that scene out, nothing that follows it will actually make any more sense. This is something producers have been doing since the dawn of time.“To make this thing for Terry, what I had to do was be in a place where I could just say no when somebody said, ‘So, we think we re going to lose Shakespeare s Globe.’ I go, ‘Yeah, no we re not.’ Sometimes I would come back with, ‘I ll tell you what. If we need to save that money, we can lose this scene after that you really like but that actually doesn t change anything. It can go.’”It’s the only instance of anyone tied to Good Omens who we’ve spoken to describing Gaiman’s behavior on the production as anything other than “lovely.”10. Tennant, meanwhile, not only played the titular extraterrestrial in Doctor Who for three seasons and in specials as the tenth Doctor, whose abilities were anything but earthly, but also turned up as witch and Voldemort loyalist Barty Crouch, Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.The actors appear to take on these heavenly creatures with ease and a sort of glee.“All those characters like vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, they get reinvented — don t they? — by each generation, because they come to represent different things for each generation,” Sheen said. “And also budgets have changed. There s a lot more money to make stuff that can really use those sort of effects quite well. But in terms of Heaven and Hell and angels and demons — the end of time s and apocalypse is a whole other thing, I suppose — we re starting to think about slightly differently. I think the angels and demons thing and Heaven and Hell is always partly about going, well you have these two extremes and real life is about somehow being in the middle somewhere and being in the gray area and that s certainly what, I think, Good Omens is about.”There’s a good chance that Good Omens will ruffle some feathers, but Gaiman isn’t worried.“One of the things that I made a call writing literally page one, which was, I thought, Well, it could be Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and they re not going to be white. So, in the first five minutes, you re going to have to deal with the voice of God and she s a woman and she s Frances McDormand, and you re going to have to deal with a non-white Adam and Eve. That s your first five minutes. You can stop watching now. If you were upset or offended, great excuse to stop watching now. Expect more spoiler-evasion, but a pretty entertaining sort as this cast knows how to talk about their characters without giving anything away. McBride, in particular, is a master at this. Ruby Rose stars as the out and proud Kate Kane, cousin of a long-absent Bruce Wayne who learns the truth about his nighttime activities and takes the mantle of the Bat for herself. And yet, eight years, two attempts at Olicity, and one Ricardo Diaz later, this is the end. Join the cast and crew as they recall fond times and tease what lies ahead for Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as the 10-episode final season brings him inexorably to his final fate. We expect this to be the key panel during The CW’s takeover of Ballroom 20. We even think a trailer for the upcoming “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover will debut toward the end of it.Supergirl, Black Lightning, and The Flash Special Video Presentations and Q A (Ballroom 20, 4:15-6:30 p.m.)While we singled out Arrow because it is their final Comic-Con appearance, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and The Flash will all make their usual Saturday appearances, bringing the customary teases of their new seasons and answer fan questions about the oddest parts of the previous year. Some of those questions will no doubt concern “Crisis,” but we expect each group will have something to share bout the crossover even the Black Lighting team, who stay out of the crossovers. As always, a large number of each cast will be in attendance. If you love these shows and want to see the Marvel Studios presentation, make your choice early and camp out in the appropriate hall.Syfy and IDW Entertainment: Wynonna Earp (Indigo Ballroom, 5 p.m.)It’s been a crazy year for Earpers. At Comic-Con 2018, the cast and crew announced they would be back for a fourth season. But just as production was supposed to start, it smacked up against a long delay and obscure studio politics. But the show is coming back, and stars Melanie Scrofano, Katherine Barrell, Chantel Riley, Greg Lawson, and Michael Eklund – along with executive producer Emily Andras and Wynonna creator Beau Smith – return to Comic-Con once more to tease the definitely soon-to-be-in-production fourth season. Of course, if you’ve ever been to a Wynonna Earp panel, you know they tend feature a lot of fans expressing their love for the show. It will get loud.DC Universe Series Sneak Previews And Q A (Indigo Ballroom, 7 p.m.)DC Universe is gearing up for its second year and it s bringing previews of the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series, the second season of Titans, and more to its two-hour Comic-Con presentation. Talent and producers of the various series will appear and there will probably be a few surprises. We’re hoping we’ll get confirmation about Doom Patrol’s second season and even a last-second reprieve for Swamp Thing, which was cancelled before its second episode debuted, but continued to air the entirety of the first season and turned out to be our favorite comic book show of the early summer.Sunday(Photo by Marc Hom/The CW)Riverdale Special Video Presentation and Q AThe cast and crew of Riverdale close out Comic-Con’s Comics on TV presence with their yearly Hall H appearance. Expect fans to swoon over stars KJ Apa and Cole Sprouse. Also expect executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to offer a bit of info which seems important, but ends up quite tangential to the Season 4 mystery. Will Jughead (Sprouse) be dead by spring break? Will Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) exact his revenge on Veronica (Camilla Mendes)? SNUB: A Star Is Born (2018) 90% Shows Some Signs of Weakness(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Awards juggernaut A Star Is Born showed it was not as unstoppable as some might have thought. While it landed five nominations – one less than Vice, which earned the most of the morning, with six – they came mostly in absolute shoe-in categories, including for Best Actress and Actor in a Drama, Best Director, Best Film, and Best Original Song. The movie failed to fully flex its muscles, however, missing out on expected nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Score, and, as already noted, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott.SNUB: Michelle Yeoh Misses out for Crazy Rich Asians (2018) 90%(Photo by © Sanja Bucko /© Warner Bros. Pictures)Crazy Rich Asians secured two nominations this morning, for Best Movie –Musical or Comedy and for star Constance Wu, but Michelle Yeoh, who plays the icy Eleanor Young in the smash rom-com, was shut out of the Best Supporting Actress category. Buzz had been building for her performance, and her Golden Globe chances, over the last few months, but we’re not giving up hope yet for her this awards season: Those who remember the film will know Eleanor may get left out in the rain at times, but she rarely stays there.SURPRISE: Lucas Hedges Scores a Best Actor – Drama Nomination for Boy Erased (2018) 80%(Photo by © Focus Features )Did anyone see this coming? We didn’t. But we’re not arguing with it: Hedges is excellent as the college student forced into conversion therapy by his parents in Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased, and his nomination should direct some needed awards-season attention to the film, which failed to score nominations for Best Film – Drama, or for Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, who had chances in the supporting acting categories.SNUB: Mary Queen of Scots (2018) 62% Will Take No Crowns(Photo by © Focus Features)On paper, Mary Queen of Scots looked a sure bet to be a big awards-season player: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, lavish costumes, familial rivalry. And, in a rare and widely celebrated move, colorblind casting for a British period drama! The movie’s first real test came this morning and it didn’t quite make the grade, landing zero nominations. The biggest surprise was perhaps seeing Ronan and Robbie left out of the acting categories — especially Ronan, who many critics say carries the film as the titular monarch.TVSURPRISE: The Kominsky Method 93% Dominates(Photo by Mike Yarish/Netflix)Netflix just released its new series about Kominsky (Michael Douglas), a former star looking for a comeback, and his longtime agent (Alan Arkin) in November. The series is Certified Fresh with a relatively modest 78% on the Tomatometer, but scored three nominations: Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy; Douglas for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy; and Arkin for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Say what you may about the HFPA’s Golden Globes – the organization is fiercely loyal to big stars.SNUB: Issa Rae for Insecure 96%(Photo by HBO)Perhaps it is less surprising that Rae was excluded from the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy category nominations than the fact that Candice Bergen was nominated for the critically panned Murphy Brown revival, which has a 43% Tomatometer score. Meanwhile, Insecure’s third season is Certified Fresh at 95%. We re calling it a snub.SURPRISE: Nearly Every Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama Nominee(Photo by Patrick Harbron/FX)We expected Matthew Rhys’ nomination – the final season of critical favorite The Americans was bound to get some love. But we did not anticipate the other nominees in the category for different reasons: Jason Bateman, Ozark (the buzz around the series has died down); Stephan James, Homecoming (a nice surprise to have young James in the mix given the veterans of the category – see “Snub: This Is Us”); Richard Madden, Bodyguard (perhaps should not have come as a surprise given that the HFPA famously rewards international stars); and Billy Porter, Pose (Porter certainly gave a standout performance in the series and it’s nice to see him recognized). Which leads us to our next point…SNUB: J.K. Simmons for Counterpart 100%(Photo by Starz)Simmons plays two roles in the Starz spy series: one as low-level bureaucrat Howard Silk who discovers the government agency he works for is a cover for a portal to an alternate universe and, two, his aggro alt-universe counterpart. The first season of the series, created by The Jungle Book screenwriter Justin Marks, was Certified Fresh at a rare 100% and season 2, premiering Sunday, currently also stands at 100%. Simmons was expected to make an appearance in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama category.SURPRISE: Kieran Culkin for Succession 93%(Photo by Ursula Coyote/HBO)That Culkin deserved the nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is not in question – the actor has been widely hailed for his performance in the HBO drama about a Murdoch-like clan grappling for control of the family empire. That he would supplant the likes of Joseph Fiennes in awards favorite The Handmaid s Tale or Atlanta standout Brian Tyree Henry is the surprise here.SNUB: This Is Us 93%(Photo by NBC)Sterling K. Brown? Milo Ventimiglia? The two This Is Us stars are awards favorites and their exclusion from the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama category is startling. Surely the series was worth a Best Television Series – Drama nomination? No? Shocking!SURPRISE: Connie Britton in Dirty John 80%(Photo by Bravo)The Bravo series, based on the real-life story of conman John Meehan (played by Eric Bana) and his mark (Britton as Debra Newell), has generated moderate buzz, but here at Rotten Tomatoes, a series that scores only 64% on the Tomatometer doesn’t immediately suggest award nods. Britton’s nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for the series comes as a surprise.SNUB: Ted Danson in The Good Place 97%(Photo by Colleen Hayes/NBC)Another in the 100% club, with two seasons Certified Fresh at 100%, the NBC series has dominated RT’s seasonal scorecards every season it has aired. And with Danson’s costar Kristen Bell nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, his exclusion from the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy category comes as a surprise.SURPRISE: The Alienist 77%(Photo by TNT)Again, a 65% Tomatometer score doesn’t suggest awards are forthcoming for a series, but the TNT crime drama based on Caleb Carr’s novels has surprised us all with Best Limited Series nomination and, for star Daniel Brühl, a Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nomination. This year s ascending star: Regina King, who helmed One Night in Miami, depicting the meeting of titanic Black icons for an incredible 1964 evening. And new directorial voices were seemingly reaching theaters and services every week, keeping cinema fresh in a volatile year. They came with horror breakouts like His House (Remi Weekes); moment-meeting dramas Miss Juneteenth (Channing Godfrey Peoples), Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell); and they came ready to move us, as with Sound of Metal (Darius Marder).The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of February 28, 2021. 013, as Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky guaranteed the franchise a spot in the top 10 with their 76% and 79% Tomatometer scores. It’s wild to think how Mancini, who admittedly doesn’t like the voodoo element of the series (that was director Tom Holland’s idea for the original), has expanded the lore, introduced new characters, and kept the story intact in ways the Halloween franchise couldn’t begin to understand. He’s been a great shepherd of the franchise that began with a tiny film about a serial killer inserting his soul into a doll after he’s been mortally wounded.It’s also worth noting that, at 63% on the Tomatometer, 2019 s Child’s Play is a rare Fresh horror remake that joins the likes of Fright Night, Let Me In, The Crazies, Evil Dead, and Suspiria, helping to make up for the glut of Rotten ones we saw in the 2000s.5. However, the series took chances and produced memorable sequels that introduced new storylines, likable characters (Kristen and Kincaid forever), and a meta-narrative that actually made Freddy scary again (New Nightmare) after he’d become a pop-culture spouting caricature.Even the Rotten sequels like the Renny Harlin-directed A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (52%, which is honestly not bad for a horror sequel) featured all-time horror kills like the demise of Debbie (Brooke Theiss), the weight-lifting badass who is transformed into cockroach. Then, there’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, a cult classic that recently enjoyed a second life with the release of Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, the 100% Tomatometer-rated 2019 documentary that focuses on star Mark Patton’s life after the sequel; it’s absolutely worth a watch.4. Starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the Warrens, the R-rated film was a blockbuster smash that cleared 0 million worldwide and opened up the door for a new universe of horror films featuring evil nuns, evil dolls, and an evil entity named Valam (lots of evil).The seven Conjuring Universe films released since 2013 have grossed .9 billion, and only The Curse of La Llorona, which made 1 million worldwide (on a million budget, so it still made money) failed to cross the 0 million milestone. Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home are both Fresh films that far surpassed 2014 s Annabelle in quality and scares. The producers could have phoned it in after seeing the 6 million worldwide haul (on a .5 million budget) of the first Annabelle, but instead they brought in directors David F. Sanberg (Lights Out) and Gary Dauberman (writer of It and It: Chapter Two), and they took chances (the finger snapping scene in Creation…) that were critically appreciated (68% Tomatometer average) and lucrative (4 million combined worldwide haul).3. Romero’s films, which started with 1968 s seminal Night of the Living Dead, are all-time horror classics that combine the thrill of undead flesh-eaters with commentaries on race relations, consumerism, and gentrification. Though other zombie movies predate Night of the Living Dead, this franchise kicked the craze into high gear, and you can see its imprint all over popular culture, from The Walking Dead to Shaun of the Dead and countless others in between.One thing that makes this franchise unique is that two of its remakes are Fresh. The 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, directed by Tom Savini, is a Fresh delight that features a better Barbara (she is coming for the zombies this time) and showcases what happens when people realize the zombies are ridiculously slow. The 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead is notable as it was Zack Snyder’s first film, and Certified Fresh at 75%, it’s still his best-reviewed movie. Both belong in the Horror Remake Hall of Fame, as they are companion pieces to their source material that branch out in their own directions and offer new twists.2. Giger s monster creations, and Ellen Ripley, the all-time hero perfectly portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, Alien became one of the most influential horror films ever made. Imagine sitting in a packed theater and witnessing the reactions to John Hurt’s chest-bursting scene, or Ripley’s final battle with the acid blood spewing xenomorph (who is also impossibly goey). Now, imagine sitting in a theater in 1986, when Ripley squared-off against the Alien Queen in James Cameron s sequel Aliens, which earned Weaver a Best Actress Oscar nomination.Aside from Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, Alien and Aliens might be the most impressive back-to-back films in any horror franchise. They helped boost the horror genre to new heights (and not just because they took place in space), and pulled in loads of money during their theatrical runs. If it weren’t for what was to come, the franchise might have landed in the number one spot.Unfortunately, the series did experience some lows in the 1990s and 2000s, as Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, and the Alien vs. Predator films all earned Rotten Tomatometer scores. The Michael Mann-helmed film was a modest success that was praised for its style and performances, but it wasn’t until five years later, with the release of Jonathan Demme s The Silence of the Lambs, that Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) now spelled correctly became a household name.The 0 million domestic haul (4 when adjusted for inflation) of The Silence of the Lambs made it the fourth highest grossing film of 1991, and the five Oscars it won for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay made it not just the only horror film to win Best Picture, but also only the third film ever to sweep all five of the top Academy Award categories (It Happened One Night, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest are the other two).While Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, and Red Dragon (Fresh at 68%) secured the franchise a spot on this list with their excellent Tomatometer and Audience Scores, Ridley Scott’s (kudos to being featured in the #1 and #2 spots) 2001 sequel Hannibal ensured the number one finish here with its 5 million domestic haul; its 40% Tomatometer score didn’t discourage anyone who really wanted to see Anthony Hopkins eat Ray Liotta s brains. It’s like a game of Sims with real people.“They’re a lot more caring with them than I was with my Sims,” Radcliffe said. “I killed my Sims accidentally. I put the fridge the wrong way around and didn’t realize.”Viswanathan confessed to even more sadistic Sim abuse.“I used to take the ladder out of the pool and just watch them suffer,” she said of her Sims abuse, which shocked her costar.“That’s you killing them!” Radcliffe objected. “I accidentally made my guy die. Obstacles they throw in Sam and Laura’s path may have deadlier impacts on completely innocent bystanders.“It does, but it is all for the goal of saving the entire world,” Radcliffe said in defense of the angels. “We’re in a world where virtually anything can be justified in order to save the existence of the species as a whole.”Miracle Workers is a dark comedy that way, but it’s ultimately optimistic.“There’s a through-line of hope even when it’s really messed up and extremely dark,” Viswanathan said. “They’re just sticking together and believing in something and going for it. Swiss Army Man is a fairly niche film. The stage shows I’ve done have actually mostly been comedy in some way. I love it. It’s a very lovely thing, particularly on a set like this where you just have to go to set and try and be stupid every day and make people laugh.”And Miracle Workers can be gloriously stupid. Creator Simon Rich’s plan is to make Miracle Workers an anthology series.“The idea would be to reset it in a different time, place, characters — sort of to do for comedy what American Horror Story is for horror,” Radcliffe said. “Once you’ve saved the world, it’s hard to find where to go from there for the second series, I think.”Whether or not that means season 1 ends with a miracle or we all die, it will be a definitive ending.“The opportunity TBS gave him to do was to do a totally self-contained season so you didn’t have to, as a writer, write an open-ended ending which may or may not go onto something in season 2,” Radcliffe said of Rich s deal. “Essentially they let us make a three-hour film with commercials.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Returning to our Potter obsession (and Radcliffe s patient accommodation), we related that when his Potter costar Rupert Grint spoke to us for Snatch season 2, he said it was weird for him to watch another actor play Ron Weasley in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Radcliffe hasn’t seen the play yet, but not because of another actor playing Harry.“I think I would find it weirder just sitting in the audience and know that people were probably looking at what my reaction to the thing was,” Radcliffe said. “That’s kind of the reason I haven’t gone.”It’s hard to believe that it has been eight years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Radcliffe has had a whole career since then, but he’ll always be Harry Potter.“It’s still a big part of my life, but I’ve gotten to go on and do loads of other things,” Radcliffe said. “I’m very happy with how it’s all gone. If you told me at the time that I was going to be sitting here eight years later talking about this amazing, weird series that I love, I’d be very, very happy with that sort of thing.”Most actors don’t get one or the other.
