What We Do in the Shadows, the hilarious 2015 mockumentary film about vampire roommates that was co-written by, co-directed by, and co-starred Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, charmed critics (if not giant theater-going audiences) and is Certified Fresh with 96% on 192 reviews. Now that the film is available for streaming and has secured its cult status, Clement and Waititi have applied its special sauce to a new FX series, starring new actors and set on New York s Staten Island. The series premiered at the SXSW film festival in Austin on Friday, which saw the release of giddy reviews praising the show, which stars Kayvan Novak (Four Lions), Natasia Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats), Matt Berry (Toast of London), and Mark Proksch (Better Call Saul) as vampires Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, and Colin Robinson, respectively, and Harvey Guillén (The Magicians) as their human servant Guillermo. What are the critics saying? Here s are the first impressions of FX show What We Do in the Shadows:How does it compare to the film?FX’s new take on What We Do In The Shadows transplants the same approach, expressionism, and aesthetic of Waititi and Clement’s effortlessly entertaining “vampire world-shattering documentary” from New Zealand to Staten Island.– Matt Donato, SlashfilmIt’s, well, more of the same, but just as deliciously delightful, absurd and wry in is amusing observations of banal vampire co-habitation, rituals and customs  it reveals the basic concept as a rich vein that could be sucked on for years.– Rodrigo Perez, The PlaylistFunctionally, the show and the film are different beasts, and you feel it in both the storytelling and the comedy.– Haleigh Foutch, Collider(Photo by FX)Does the adaptation to TV work? The adaptation is just the right amount of weird paired with just the right amount of sweet paired with just the right amount of dark.– Merrill Barr, ForbesWhat We Do in the Shadows should have always been a series. Simply put, there’s just so much you can do with this premise, and the first four episodes alone proves as much  Absolutely nothing has been lost in translation.– Michael Roffman, Consequence of SoundSometimes it feels like certain details are rushed in favor of a silly joke, but a) the silly jokes are so good, and b) the intricate craftsmanship evident in the costumes, sets, and over mise en scéne, not to mention the rich world-building and endearing characters, more than make up for a few early bumps.– Ben Travers, IndieWire九游会网页版登录入口Movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are vibrant pops of color. Iron Man’s crimsons and golds or the Guardians of the Galaxy’s blues, greens, and purples blur and swirl across the nearly every frame, giving audiences a sensory overload as they watch their heroes battle for good over evil.So how did the MCU start the television section of its Phase Four chapter? With a black-and-white sitcom, naturally.WandaVision, created by Jac Schaeffer, is ostensibly about the quiet, domestic bliss of tel

Even as we enter the final month of 2018, superhero movies continue to draw massive interest, with a member of DC s Justice League and an alternate version of a Marvel icon topping the list of Decembers most anticipated movies. If you count the Transformers prequel about a certain VW Beetle and Disney s decades-later sequel to a celebrated classic, then fantastical tales about extraordinary individuals comprise the top four. Toss in a couple of real-life based dramas that tied for the fifth spot, and you ve got a pretty hefty holiday movie season to look forward to. With that in mind, read on for the Most Anticipated Movies of December!1. Aquaman (2018) 65%(Photo by Warner Bros.)10,107 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fansOpens December 21How do you make a superhero who talks to fish and wears orange spandex cool? Cast Jason Khal Drogo Momoa in the role, surround him with people like Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, and Amber Heard, and put the man behind the Conjuring universe in the director s chair. James Wan s origin story about DC s reluctant Atlantean king ranked #1 across all of our social polls and garnered the most Want-to-See votes on RT of any December movie by a wide margin. Aquaman looks primed to rule the box office when it opens right before Christmas, but it ll face some stiff competition from a few other movies on this list.Watch Trailer2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) 97%(Photo by Sony Pictures Animation)1,183 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fans, #3 pick by our Facebook fansOpens December 14We ve already gotten three different versions of Peter Parker since the superhero movie boom of the 2000s, but we ve never seen Miles Morales on the big screen, and if early reviews are any indication, Into the Spider-Verse could be one of the best Spider-Man movies yet. Produced by The Lego Movie and Jump Street franchise s Phil Lord and Chris Miller (and co-written by Lord), Sony s animated film made believers out of skeptics with the first trailer, which showcased a unique, vibrant art style with a beating heart at its center. Considering almost all the reviews thus far have been raves, this one looks like a crowd-pleaser.Watch Trailer3. Bumblebee (2018) 90%(Photo by Paramount Pictures) 793 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Facebook fans, #3 pick by our Instagram fans, #4 pick by our Twitter fansOpens December 21The Transformers franchise has never performed very well with critics (the first film in 2007 is the Freshest at 58% on the Tomatometer), but it has raked in over billion at the box office. With that in mind, this month s Bumblebee represents a break from formula: It s a prequel set during the 1980s and centered on just one of the characters, and it s directed by someone other than Michael Bay (namely Travis Knight). Hailee Steinfeld stars as the human companion this time around, and instead of the more futuristic designs we ve seen in the franchise thus far, we get robots that more closely resemble the classic Transformers from the TV series. We ll have to wait and see if the gamble pays off.Watch Trailer4. Mary Poppins Returns (2018) 80%(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)1,149 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Twitter fansOpens December 19The latest in Disney s efforts to remake, reimagine, or otherwise reintroduce classic films from their extensive library comes in the form of a sequel to 1964 s Mary Poppins. The magical nanny formerly played by Julie Andrews is replaced by Emily Blunt, who returns to Cherry Tree Lane to teach timely lessons to the children of the now grown-up Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw). This one only cracked the top five in our Twitter poll, but it also earned the third most Want-to-See votes on RT.Watch Trailer5a. Mary Queen of Scots (2018) 62%(Photo by Liam Daniel/Focus Features)552 Want-to-See Votes#5 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fansOpens December 7Like last month, two films tied for the fifth spot on our Most Anticipated list, and in this case, they re both political dramas based on true events. The first is this look at the life of Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan), the young Queen of France who returns to her native Scotland just as the country comes under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), setting off a fierce rivalry with consequences that will echo through history. Mary Queen of Scots managed to sneak in at fifth in both our Facebook and Instagram polls and earned the fifth most Want-to-See votes on RT, and judging from early reviews, it s an impressive showcase for the talents of its two leads.Watch Trailer5b. Vice (2018) 65%(Photo by Annapurna Pictures)195 Want-to-See Votes#4 pick by our Instagram fans, #5 pick by our Twitter fansOpens December 25Last but not least, we have Adam McKay s profile of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, chronicling the congressman s rise to power and substantial influence during the George W. Bush administration. The stellar cast includes Christian Bale as Cheney, Sam Rockwell as Bush, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, and Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, just to name a few, and it represents McKay s second foray into more serious material after a string of broad comedies. Though it didn t score many Want-to-See votes, it managed to rank fourth in our Instagram poll and fifth in our Twitter poll.Watch Trailer
This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Buck Rogers, Cleopatra, Furiosa, The Others, and Tut.This WEEK S TOP STORYMAD MAX: FURY ROAD PREQUEL LANDS THREE SUPERHERO STARS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Director George Miller is getting closer to a filming start date for Furiosa, his prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (Certified Fresh at 97%), about the life of Charlize Theron s character before she became well, the person she was in Mad Max: Fury Road. Back in March, we first heard that Miller was considering casting Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Emma.) as the younger Furiosa, and this week, that casting was confirmed. In addition to Taylor-Joy (who played Magik in The New Mutants), however, Miller has also cast Australian star Chris Hemsworth (Marvel s Thor, obviously) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played both Black Manta in Aquaman and Doctor Manhattan in HBO s Watchmen (our apologies if that s a spoiler for a show that aired a year ago). Hemsworth will reportedly play a character called Dementus who has a huge silver scar on his face, and Abdul-Mateen will play a character called Pretorian. Those names seem to confirm that the film will indeed be set in post-apocalyptic times, and not, as some might have guessed, before the end of the world. Tom Hardy is not expected to reprise his role as Mad Max, as his character would be much younger, and also because Max and Furiosa did not seem to know each other before they met in Fury Road. There is no release date yet for Furiosa, but George Miller plans to start filming in 2021, which suggests a date in 2022 or 2023. You can read here what Anya Taylor-Joy is already saying about being cast as Furiosa, and read here to find out what Miller might have planned for the prequel.Other Top Headlines1. GAL GADOT TO REUNITE WITH PATTY JENKINS FOR CLEOPATRA (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world still hasn t seen Wonder Woman 1984, the second collaboration between star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins following their work together on the first Wonder Woman (Certified Fresh at 93%). We ve known for a while that Gadot and Jenkins have plans to eventually make a third Wonder Woman movie together, but what we didn t know until this week is that, in the meantime, they will be reuniting for another movie about a heroine with ancient mythologial roots. Gadot is now attached to star in and Patty Jenkins will direct Paramount Pictures  Cleopatra biopic, based on the life of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Cleopatra has been a favorite epic subject for Hollywood since its earliest days, including Cecil B. DeMille s 1934 film starring Claudette Colbert and the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor. There have been many attempts at Cleopatra biopics over the last several years, including one at Sony Pictures that in the past had both Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga possibly in talks to star. That Sony project has been in development for over 10 years, and it s not known at this point whether Sony will push forward to compete with the Gal Gadot version, or whether Sony has given up on Cleopatra completely.2. OSCAR-WINNING DIRECTOR OF HAIR LOVE TO ANIMATE LIFE OF KING TUT(Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images)Marvel Studios  Black Panther was an milestone for many reasons, but one of them was that it achieved a level of live-action production design and world building that one more usually associates with animation. That style is called afrofuturism, and we re soon going to get a Sony Pictures Animation feature film called Tut, which will interpret the life of young Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankamun through an afrofutristic vision. Tut will be the animated feature film debut of director Matthew A. Cherry, who won the Academy Award this year for Best Animated Short for Hair Love (which you can watch on Facebook right here). Cherry s vision for Tut  will take audiences on a journey through ancient Egypt and celebrate a culture that introduced the world to countless modern conventions and technologies. There is no voice casting news for Tut yet, and given the production time for major animated films, we probably can t expect to see it released until 2023 or later. Matthew A. Cherry will also be producing a 12 episode Hair Love spin-off series for HBO Max called Young Love.3. JOAQUIN PHOENIX GETS GOOD PART AS BONAPARTE IN KITBAG (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just last week, we learned that 90 year old Clint Eastwood is preparing to direct and star in his next movie Cry Macho, and this week, another director who s nearly as old also announced a major new project. 82-year-old Ridley Scott wrapped filming this week on The Last Duel, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver, and then in March, he will start filming Gucci, starring Lady Gaga. And then, after that (at which point he will be 83), Scott will direct Joaquin Phoenix in the epic Napoleon Bonaparte biopic Kitbag. The title reportedly refers to the kitbags carried by soldiers during war, and the expression that there is a general s staff hidden in every soldier s kitbag. The ambitious biopic will reportedly cover Napoleon s, swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. Although Napoleon was a popular subject in Hollywood s earliest years, there hasn t been a major such movie since 1970 s Waterloo (Rotten at 27%), the box office failure of which is often cited as the reason why Stanley Kubrick gave up on his own Napoleon biopic in which Jack Nicholson would have starred.4. SELENA GOMEZ TO STAR IN BLACK SWAN-STYLE THRILLER SET IN FASHION WORLD(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although Selena Gomez has stayed busy with her music (and the videos that go with it), supporting roles in movies like The Dead Don t Die (Rotten at 54%), and a Woody Allen movie few people have seen, you actually have to go back four years to 2016 and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (Fresh at 64%) to find a movie in which Gomez had a prominent role (and even that was as part of an ensemble). Gomez appears intent on fixing that soon, with this week s new project, and also the recent news that Gomez s voice role in Hotel Transylvania 4 may be larger than we originally thought. Gomez will produce ( and will likely also star) in a psychological horror film for STXfilms called Dollhouse, which is being compared to Black Swan, but set in the fashion world of New York City. Gomez s producing partners on Dollhouse will include Shaun Levy s 21 Laps Entertainment, whose filmography includes Arrival, Fist Fight, Kin, and Ryan Reynolds upcoming action movie Free Guy. (This probably goes without saying, but just to be clear, Selena Gomez s Dollhouse also has nothing to do with the FOX TV series starring Eliza Dushku.)5. SAMMY DAVIS JR. MAY BE FIRST RAT PACK MEMBER TO GET HIS OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)Over the last 20 years or so, there have been a few different attempts to adapt the lives of famous 1950s/1960s Rat Pack members like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as biopics, but neither ever came to be (though HBO did portray them collectively in 1998 s The Rat Pack, Rotten at 57%). With no active development for biopics about either of those crooners, it s now looking more likely that the first major feature film about the life of a Rat Pack member will instead be about the life of Sammy Davis, Jr.  Lena Waithe (Master of None, Ready Player One) is producing the Sammy Davis, Jr. biopic with MGM, and the screenplay will be adapted from the memoir Sammy Davis Jr: My Father by his daughter Tracey Davis. Sammy Davis Jr. had many personal distinctions, including both African American and Jewish heritage, multiple starring film roles, and several songs that made it to the Top 20 pop charts, including Something s Gotta Give, Love Me or Leave Me, and I ve Got to Be Me (possibly a great title for his biopic?).6. GODZILLA PRODUCERS REBOOTING CLASSIC SCI-FI HERO BUCK ROGERS  (Photo by ©NBC courtesy Everett Collection)We re all so used to science fiction and superheroes that we can easily take it for granted that they ve always been around, but the origins for many genre concepts are relatively new. For example, it was only 92 years ago in 1928 that the sci-fi adventurer Buck Rogers was first introduced (predating Flash Gordon, John Carter of Mars, and thousands of superheroes, including Superman). Although Buck Rogers went on to become a popular 1930s and 1940s comic strip and serial star, the character has been relatively underused ever since, except for the 1979-1981 TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray), which may be well-remembered by Generation X, but probably not by many under 40. After several months of negotiations, Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind recent reboots like Godzilla and Dune, is now in development on a new feature film that would reboot Buck Rogers, focusing on a man who wakes up from centuries of suspended animation 500 years in the future. It s not yet known which version of Buck Rogers will be adapted, including for example, whether the reboot might include characters from the TV show like Twiki the robot and Erin Gray s Wilma Deering. In tangentially related news, Walt Disney Pictures is also now developing a feature film based on the popular theme park attraction Space Mountain.7. SANDRA BULLOCK S ADVENTURE TO THE LOST CITY OF D  (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)It might feel a lot longer ago than 2009, but that was indeed the year that the romantic comedy The Proposal (Rotten at 45%), which as it turned out, was sort of one of the last hurrahs for the romantic comedy genre as a major Hollywood release (they re more common these days on streamers than in major theatrical releases). But when people do eventually go back to movie theaters post-COVID-19, they are still going to want date movies, so it s not at all surprising that some rom-coms are still in development, especially when they re hybrids with other genres. Sandra Bullock will produce and is attached to star in a Paramount Pictures romantic adventure called The Lost City of D, which is being compared to the 1984 classic Romancing the Stone. Although he s not signed, the producers reportedly also hope to recruit Bullock s Proposal co-star Ryan Reynolds to join her in their first movie together since. Sandra Bullock will star as an author who discovers that the fictional city she s written about is actually real, leading her to try to discover its location. The most recent screenplay draft was written by Dana Fox (Isn t It Romantic, Couples Retreat).8. ANIMATED WIZARD OF OZ SPINOFF MOVIE IN THE WORKS FOR DOROTHY S LITTLE DOG TOTO TOO (Photo by Everett Collection)Children s author L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books, but the argument could be made that the amazing success of The Wizard of Oz has left such an overwhelming legacy that the other books were not adapted as frequently (or at all) as they would have been if the 1939 The Wizard of Oz had never existed. (Of course, the Oz would has indeed been revisited, usually as reimaginings like the Broadway musical Wicked, or the R B musical The Wiz.) Warner Animation Group is now developing another film in that vein, as the studio has made a deal with two-time Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) to direct their musical adaptation of the book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of The Wizard of Oz, which, as the title suggests, is basically the same story but from the perspective of Dorothy s dog. The most recent movie from Warner Animation Group was the prequel Scoob!, which ended up going to VOD because of the pandemic, but the Toto movie is reportedly still fully intended for a theatrical release (given how long animation takes, Toto is still a few years away anyway).9. THE OTHERS IS GETTING A REMAKE(Photo by (c)Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)It seems like most movie remakes come from about 20-30 years earlier for example, the 1980s had lots of 1950s remakes, and the 2000s and 2010s had a lot of remakes from the 1980s. So, as we re now 20 years from the year 2000, we can expect to see remakes of movies from the aughts start to appear, and one such project made the news this week. Universal Pictures is partnering with Sentient Entertainment (TV s Feud: Bette and Joan) to develop a remake of the 2001 supernatural thriller The Others ( Certified Fresh at 83% ), starring Nicole Kidman as a mother struggling to protect her children from a supernatural menace in their home. The original movie was set in England in 1945, but it s possible the remake may have a different setting (possibly modern times, or any other decade). It s also not yet known who will be adapting the screenplay, or who will be directing the film.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Tracking services took another hit this weekend, though maybe not as sharp as the one that Warner Bros. got. After all they were relying on the optimism that their Harley Quinn film was going to live up to the expectations that box office watchers had based on the awareness of their advertising. The result is a number that looks decent in a rather downbeat start to 2020, but is far from what anyone associated with the project wanted looking forward.King of the Crop: Birds of Prey Tops Weekend, but Disappoints(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)For weeks Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was being touted for an opening in the million range. That would be in the Shazam!/Green Lantern range for DC properties and was already subject of some concern for the reported million production. Word-of-mouth and international sales were going to be essential to making the film a hit with 0 million worldwide the magic number to begin having that conversation. If the film were able to follow the paths of those two other films, it could have ended up in the 6 million–0 million range domestically and probably cross its profit margin with no issue. But at least part of that journey may be over right from the get-go.A .25 million start for Birds of Prey puts it in a rather precarious position. Only a third of the films opening in February between million– million have crossed the 0 million line: Get Out, Identity Thief, The Lego Movie 2, and Just Go With It. The writing was seemingly on the wall Friday morning. While some were touting million in Thursday previews as a solid start, all one had to do was look at the films grossing that specific amount to suggest Birds was off to a rocky start. The two R-rated films with that start — Annabelle: Creation ( million opening) and Blade Runner 2049 (.75 million) — a prequel and sequel from WB finished with 2 million and million, respectively. (The PG-13 films opened between million–75 million.)The film could still be saved by its international release, however. Last year, Shazam! grossed over 4 million overseas, and that is the lowest showing for a DC property since 2011 when Green Lantern only accumulated an additional 3 million internationally. Birds of Prey debuted with million overseas.

(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)During the summer of the pandemic, Warner Bros. was holding true to the optimism that a partial movie season could be salvaged. They had two of the season s most-anticipated films under their belt – Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 – and even leaned into the branding that the former s release could be the thing that saved movie theaters from months of shutdown. Though America saw some hope in major cities flattening the curve, it was short-lived and caution continued to influence policy and re-openings. As a result, Disney moved scheduled summer release Mulan to streaming and WB was forced to inch back its releases of Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984.Ultimately, Tenet was released theatrically in August and did as well as one possibly could – especially internationally – when faced with limited venues, scared moviegoers, and a final product that some felt didn t live up to everyone’s lofty expectations. After a few more shifts, WB finally decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day – but then decided to do so both in theaters (where safe) and on its affiliated streaming platform, HBO Max. The announcement of the dual release strategy was a volcanic moment for a debate that has raged since March about whether studios would, could, or should sacrifice potential hundreds of millions of dollars in theatrical revenue for their guaranteed blockbusters by going straight to streaming. Then, two weeks later, WB went one further: It announced it would release its entire 2021 slate simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters – a slate that includes blockbusters like The Suicide Squad, Dune, and In the Heights. Many began to wonder: Was this going to be the way of the future? Were the days of theatrical releasing over? There are still many questions to consider before calling the time for the patient on the table, we think, and here are some of the most pertinent – and what you should know about them. Will Other Studios Follow In Warner Bros Footsteps?(Photo by Chiabella James/Warner Bros. Entertainment)Others studios have been exploring different release models since this mess officially kicked into gear nine months ago. Universal got the ball rolling with a temp fix, helping to ease a little parental stress by sticking with its Trolls World Tour release date, only to move it to streaming services for a price. After initial pushback from AMC Theatres about the movie, they eventually worked out a longer-term deal where the length of commitment of Universal’s films in their locations would be determined on immediate box office success. So, lower-grossing films would be moved to streaming after three weeks, at which time a lower split-profit model with the theaters would kick in; higher-grossing movies would stay.Disney, too, experimented in changing the game with Mulan, but the title s  price tag (comparable to a small family trip to a matinee) on top of the subscription price did not translate into the kind of headline-grabbing total that business and box office analysts would salivate over.So now what? Is Paramount+ going to expand the revamped CBS All Access from television into their feature library? Can Lionsgate Play’s recent soft launch from India make its way over to the States? Would Sony be able to bring “Let’s Crackle and Chill” into the lexicon? Disney’s acquisition of Fox already reduced the number of these questions by one, but so far they have been skittish to move their blue chip titles over to immediate home viewing. Sending Artemis Fowl and The One and Only Ivan to Disney+ felt more like acceptable sacrifices rather than trailblazing. However, the numbers on Pixar’s Soul (now directly competing with Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max over Christmas) could begin to shift Disney’s thinking. Universal’s Peacock service may be the one to watch in the near future. Trolls kicked off the conversation and any commitment from another franchise-heavy studio to simultaneous theatrical/streaming releases would send speculation into overdrive – and there may be officially no way back to the old model. On the other hand…Is a Less-Crowded Marketplace A Great Incentive for Others To Stay in the Theatrical Game?(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Warner Bros. is continuing to utilize theaters for its 2021 slate. But when a single ticket in certain areas will cost more than a monthly subscription to an entire library of content, the incentive to head out – in a still-new (presumably) post-vaccine landscape – may be reduced to the kind of purists who still buy albums. Socially-distanced or streaming-distanced, those who still like getting out and about could still have major event options in their local theater, which may not want to give up more than a single screen for the movies playing at home. A few shifts to the schedule and studios could take advantage of the voids left by The Suicide Squad in the August kickoff slot and Dune in October, the period that WB has recently taken up a bunch of space in with Joker, Gravity, and A Star is Born. The HBO Max partnership may have sent three potential 0 million grossers (Godzilla vs. Kong, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In the Heights) from May-to-July next year, but Universal and Disney still have scheduled Black Widow, Fast Furious 9, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Jungle Cruise in that frame, which could see double or triple those numbers. Again, this is all dependent on the success of the vaccines and the comfort-level of our society. WB bet on this and lost last summer and clearly did not want to again. Will There Be Pushback From Filmmakers?(Photo by © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)Someone who has definitely benefited from the seemingly unlimited pocketbook of the leader in streaming is Martin Scorsese. A three-and-a-half epic such as The Irishman, costing anywhere from 0 million to 0 million, likely would not have gone forward anywhere else but Netflix, and now Apple is backing his latest, Killers of the Flower Moon. Paramount is still slated to distribute the film theatrically, but that is another 0-0 million price tag just as of today. Artists like Scorsese are not nearly as interested in bottom lines as the studios are, especially if he gets to keep working regardless. Will supporters of the theatrical experience as an integral component of cinema be so ready to give it up, though? One cannot imagine Christopher Nolan is on board with Warner Bros. 2021 distribution model. (The studio has distributed seven of his 11 movies.) Many feel the filmmaker s insistence on releasing his work on the biggest screen possible was one of the many reasons the studio felt it had no choice but to put Tenet in theaters (regular and IMAX) first. If WB does stand alone on this for the time being, is that going to hurt their standing with those filmmakers with the power to insist their movies play on something larger than a 55-inch screen? It is highly doubtful that James Cameron has spent 86 years working on the Avatar sequels only to watch Disney potentially shift gears on their event pictures. Can Theaters Offer New Incentives to Get Us In the Door?(Photo by Macall Polay / © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)3-D engaged moviegoers in the 1950s, got a brief, largely lame revival in the 80s. and then generated extra box office in the late 90s and beyond; super-wide Cinemascope was utilized to dazzle home viewers away from their newly-bought television screens into a much grander experience. Today, theaters may have exhausted their technological innovations – and no one is making a special trip to have their seats vibrate with the noise. So they may be down to the best possible innovation of all in a post-pandemic world: savings. Depending on the theater chain, a trip to the movies for a family these days can feel like one to a professional ball game. MoviePass was a fun, if financially irrational, experiment that benefited weekly attendees. Would local theaters be able to manifest something comparable that would encourage movie fans to offer a bigger, traditional night out that will not have them weighing the savings versus a monthly subscription cost? More importantly, can they do it without being subjected to the ire of studios who feels themselves losing out on the scraps they may still be providing to the theaters if discounts, punch cards, and 2-for-1 specials become necessary.Could Sneak Previews Make a Big Comeback?(Photo by © Warner Bros. )You may be revealing your age if you do not remember the practice of sneak previews. It actually was not that long ago and many faces would light up at the prospect of seeing a commercial or newspaper ad revealing that the movie they could not wait to see would not make me wait any longer with a one-time showing on Saturday night. Imagine you are just a week away from seeing Dune or Matrix 4, and WB announces that you can see them in theaters – for one night only – before the official launch. Would there be a flock comparable to recent Amazon sneak preview events like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Aquaman, which netted around million each, or Fandango s high-selling Early Access screening series? Films good enough to generate ecstatic word-of-mouth could certainly encourage more fans to rally around the big screens for their first viewing – and potentially discover the incentives theaters may develop to bring them back. Finally, Could Warner Bros. Reverse Course?(Photo by © Warner Bros. )The streaming of Universal s Trolls World Tour was a big success early in our pandemic times; six weeks later, Scoob! failed to replicate it. Tenet tried to correct the blockbuster drought in theaters, but did not live up to Warner Bros.’ hopes, and eventually Wonder Woman 1984 comes home without the restraint of a separate Mulan surcharge. The world is not out of the woods yet and while vaccines provide optimism, there are still so many unanswered questions. Who knows what the future will hold between now and the still-scheduled summer movie season slated to kickoff in May with Marvel’s Black Widow? If Disney holds course and we see a 0 million box office report on May 9, will WB consider delaying premieres of The Suicide Squad and Dune on HBO Max? It seems unlikely that the entire strategy would be abandoned in 2021 after all the headlines it has generated. That may also depend on how quickly other studios jump at the chance to make some of their own. Everything is an experimentation at this point, with various parties considering and even rooting for success or failure. Jumping right to a half-empty conclusion is premature though there is no reason not to prepare for all possibilities.Erik Childress can be heard each week evaluating box office on WGN Radio with Nick Digilio as well as on Business First AM with Angela Miles and his Movie Madness Podcast. On an Apple device?
