While some took issue with the overuse of CGI, and a not-quite-as-sharp-as-its-predecessors script, most critics gave it the Fresh thumbs up. Here, after all, was the first Indiana Jones movie the world had been gifted in almost 30 years, and it tickled the nostalgia bone right into Certified Fresh status.Fans of the franchise, though . well, they weren t exactly whipped up to that level of enthusiasm by Indy 4, which 12 years later is largely considered the worst film in the series and – for some – a major blight on it. (See the Audience Score of 54%). There was that CGI, for starters, and that Russian accent (sorry Cate), and those aliens. While many acknowledge it has its moments – most of those thanks to tipped fedoras and John Williams – the sense has been that this decent action movie was a terrible Indiana Jones movie.Listen Now:  Spotify |  Apple Podcasts  |  Stitcher  |  TuneIn  |  Google Podcasts | Radio Public | Deezer | iHeart | Art19Is that Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 78%  wrong ? 7.43.3 0月喜迎(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)TV Shows That Celebrate Latino CultureHispanic actors have been part of the TV ecosystem practically since the medium was born, but it took Lucy s love of Ricky Ricardo in 1951 s I Love Lucy to highlight the intimate family life of a Latino character and help set aside a strict vaqueros-and-villains tradition of Latino characters on TV. Stereotypes still appear — these days more often as drug dealers and human traffickers — but TV has evolved so that representation is no longer simply superficial or disparaging.Take HBO s refreshingly surreal Los Espookys. Fred Armisen wanted to create a show that isn’t an explanation of Latino culture, that’s moving past the foreignness of it,” the former Saturday Night Live talent told The New York Times about the Spanish-language series he co-created with Julio Torres and Ana Fabrega for the U.S. television market.Los Espookys follows a group of friends who fake horror events for a living in an unidentified Latin American country. The show stars Torres, Fabrega, Cassandra Ciangherotti, and
Much like the DC Comics Multiverse itself, WarnerMedia’s plans for a film Multiverse are always changing. Projects are announced, but then seemingly go into hibernation. The stalwart of the line, Batman, always gets its movies made while Wonder Woman seems poised to join the Dark Knight as a reliable franchise. Superman, sadly, is caught between the worlds of reboots and rival ideas.Nevertheless, DC Films chief Walter Hamada recently revealed a plan to release six DC-related films a year in the coming decade – four will arrive in theaters while two will be made exclusively for HBO Max. The library is certainly deep enough to support such an endeavor. And thanks to Hamada embracing the multiverse concept, it seems plans are in place for a second Batman saga to coincide with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. It all means DC fans will get a lot of content in the next 10 years.Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Batman v SupermanListen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Wonder Woman 1984Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About AquamanThe change is the latest shockwave in the often incredible story of Warner Bros.’ attempts to bring the DC Multiverse to the screen. So before we take a look at the latest changes, let’s go back to the beginning of WB’s ambitious plans for its extended universe…In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment announced a series of movies based on DC Comics characters. The original schedule included a two-part Justice League project and at least two films a year through 2020. Things did not go according to plan, with Justice League compressing its story into one film and projects like Flash experiencing constant delays. Despite projects shifting around the slate – and the critical backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – the original 2014 master plan has been executed for the most part, with only 2018 missing a second DC-derived film and Cyborg disappearing entirely. And even as features like Aquaman and Shazam! went into production, the studio never stopped trying to get new projects off the ground utilizing the comic book characters and the universe initiated by 2013’s Man of Steel. The next several years will deliver a number of projects from that original slate and some surprises in the form of Aquaman 2 and The New Gods. On the TV/streaming front, Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.For now, the following represents everything we know about those projects and their place in the DC Films universe, as well as a few DC adaptations that will exist separate from the universe. (Want to see what the other camp has in store? Check out our breakdown of upcoming Marvel movies.)SEE: Most Anticipated 2021 Movies | Most Anticipated 2022 MoviesComing SoonThere is a lot that is uncertain about which DC Comics characters are coming to the big screen, who s bringing them there, and in what order — but nothing is uncertain about these first movies. They re in production, or in pre- or post-production, and we know exactly when they will be hitting theaters. (At least, we know the latest dates, and will update as those change with COVID-19 leaving the landscape a little uncertain.)The BatmanRelease Date: March 4, 2022What We Know: War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves took over directing duties on The Batman following the departure of Ben Affleck, who intended to star, co-write, and direct. Creative differences saw his role reduced to star even as his personal problems overshadowed the ongoing question about his continued involvement. Late in January of 2019, Warner Bros. announced a release date while Affleck definitively stated he was leaving the cape and cowl behind. (Though not so definitively, if you skip down to our latest update on Flash). A new man behind the mask emerged that May when Robert Pattinson took over the role. That casting choice confirmed the story would revolve around a younger Batman, and Reeves has confirmed that, telling DC FanDome it will be set during Year Two when a serial killer is stalking Gotham. Across late summer and early Fall, the cast began to round out with Jeffrey Wright joining up as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano taking on The Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz signing on as Catwoman. In November, word broke indicating Colin Farrell would play The Penguin and Andy Serkis would be the new face of Alfred Pennyworth. Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Alex Ferns as Commissioner Pete Savage, John Turturro as Falcone, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Rumors also suggest a new Two-Face will also emerge. Stacking the film with almost all of the notable Batman villains is something of a change for modern Batman movies, which generally only use two at a time – although Batman Begins featured a whopping five when you count lesser known characters like Carmine Falcone, Joe Chill, and Victor Zsasz alongside The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Despite a member of the crew – allegedly star Robert Pattinson himself – coming down with the coronavirus, the film seemed poised to hold its October 2021 release date until Dune took its slot during a subsequent change to the calendar. The film is now scheduled for March of 2022. During DC FanDome in October of 2021, Warner Bros. released a second trailer for the film, featuring a greater emphasis on Catwoman and the Riddler. Additionally, Reeves, Pattinson, and Kravitz offered some comments about the film, with Kravitz calling her Catwoman someone who “wants to fight for those who don’t have someone.” Reeves added that the film will feature a number of “iconic” moments with the character even if she doesn’t map 1:1 to comic book Catwoman.Recommended: Everything We Know About The Batman How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The project s ties to the established film continuity are questionable. Late in 2018, rumors began to emerge that Reeves’ vision for the film set it outside the Man of Steel universe as a “standalone” story, like Joker. The studio moved quickly to quash the rumors, but it now seems clear the film will exist in its own universe with a HBO Max spin-off series already in development.Black Adam(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: July 29, 2022What We Know: After listening to fans when he was initially interested in Shazam!, Johnson signed on to star in a film featuring that character’s greatest nemesis, Black Adam. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with Noah Centineo on board as well to play Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher, whose superpower is his super strength and ability to grow  huge. At DC FanDome, Johnson showed two clips. One, produced by Jim Lee and Boss Logic which gave fans a quick rundown of the character s origins – formerly enslaved, he s in the pursuit of Justice the Black Adam way. The other introduced the idea of the Justice Society of America, and revealed that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher would feature in the film. In late September 2020, Aldis Hodge emerged as Hawkman, but the news was soon tempered as the film lost its December 22, 2021 release date entirely during the shuffling of Warner Bros. release slate 10 days later. As for most of the project’s existence, it is once again unclear when it will be released. But with members of the cast already assembled, it is possible the film will arrive in 2023. Aiding this possibility: Sarah Shahi joined the cast in October with a role described as both a professor and freedom fighter. In the months following, Quintessa Swindell joined the cast as JSAer Cyclone and Marwan Kenzari signed up for an as-yet undisclosed role; Pierce Brosnan will star as Dr. Fate. Additional cast members include Bodhi Sabongui and James Cusati-Moyer. In March 2021, a release date was finally announced, with Johnson taking over billboards in Times Square to reveal the movie will release July 29, 2022. In early June, Shahi finally confirmed her character is Adrianna Tomaz – or some version of the DC character. The next month, Johnson released a photo teasing his Black Adam body suit and, later in July, announced he wrapped filming via his Instagram. A brief clip featuring the resurrection of Black Adam was released during the 2021 DC FanDome in October, suggesting the character may not be much of a morning person. A behind-the-scenes reel also offered a few glimpses of Dr. Fate’s helmet and Adam’s costume.(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam, so their film worlds are definitely connected. But he is also a fairly complicated anti-hero when dealing with anyone else. Heroic one moment and brutal the next, Adam could emerge as the powerful leader of his own country – an idea straight from the comic books. At DC FanDome, Johnson hinted that the movie could feature an appearance from Superman, and sent a warning to all those in the Justice League: The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. The Flash(Photo by DC)Release Date: November 4, 2022What We Know: A Flash film starring Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen featured in Justice League is finally getting made. After losing multiple directors – among them, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa – and undergoing a title change from The Flash to Flashpoint and back again, the nature of the film is finally coming into focus as we ve learned that Allen will crash through multiple dimensions to change his mother s fate in an adaptation of DC s ambitious 2011 Flashpoint event comic book series, and meet various versions of some of DC s biggest heroes along the way. It helmer Andy Muschietti signed on as the project s fifth director in July, and at DC FanDome revealed a first look at concept art for Allen s new suit, which features embedded light and was made by Bruce Wayne. And someone else has signed on, too. Ben Affleck will return in a small, cameo-style role as the version of Batman we ve seen in Justice League, while Michael Keaton returns, too, as the Batman we met in 1989 s Batman; Muschietti told Vanity Fair that Keaton s role is substantial. Rudy Mancuso will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role. In March of 2021, Kiersey Clemons, who signed on to play Iris West back when Famuyiwa was going to direct, recommitted to project. Additionally, word broke soon after indicating Maribel Verdú will play Barry’s mother Nora, but due to scheduling conflicts, Billy Crudup will not reprise his Justice League role as Barry’s father Henry. Ron Livingston will play the part instead. Michael Keaton, after suggesting he might leave the project, recommitted late in the summer. His appearance in the film was also teased during a sizzle reel for the film at DC FanDome 2021, which also featured a great look at Barry’s new suit and a first glimpse at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: With the story focusing on the Flashpoint storyline – in which Barry’s attempt to save his mother wrecks the universe – the film will feature Ben Affleck as the Batman, as well as Michael Keaton, and may include other familiar faces. A promo package at DC FanDome also suggested Allen may encounter DC heroes from TV and streaming, with multiple clips of Watchmen playing as the panel discussed the Flashpoint possibilities. And considering how the original Flashpoint comic book radically altered the DC Comics universe, the film may bring about the end of the DCEU as we knew it.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Release Date: December 16, 2022What We Know: James Wan returns to direct the sequel. According to reports following the first film s stunning box office debut in December of 2018, the studio wanted Wan to develop the project while he decided whether or not to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a co-writer on the first film, soon emerged to write the follow-up, and Warner Bros. set it for a 2022 release at the end of February last year. Presumably, any sequel storyline will feature the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his thirst for revenge. We’re also going to presume a wedding between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) will occur. Wan will direct the sequel after completing work on the horror film Malignant, due out later this year, and told DC FanDome that the movie will have a more serious tone compared with the original, and that new worlds will be explored. At the same panel, he was joined by Patrick Wilson, and the pair confirmed that Ocean Master will return for the sequel. For the moment, the film is still expected to be the DC holiday release of 2022 – a year now packed full of films based on comic book characters from Warner Bros. and other studios. And considering The Flash is expected in theaters a month earlier, Aquaman 2 may switch to a 2023 release. In early June 2021, director James Wan revealed the title of the film. A behind-the-scenes video showcased during October 2021’s DC FanDome unveiled a new look at Black Manta’s updated costume and a black version of Arthur’s armor. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Aquaman’s seas presumably now exist in a universe all their own. That said, it is always possible for one of the characters to seek his help in a stinger scene.Shazam: Fury of the Gods(Photo by DC)Release Date: June 2, 2023What We Know: Well, as of DC FanDome, we know that the title of the movie will be Fury of the Gods, and that Sinbad – who through the Mandela Effect will always be associated with the franchise – may be in it. Other than that, not much. What we do know is that director David F. Sandberg is back, along with star Zachary Levy and co-stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. The credits stinger at the end of Shazam! revealed our hero could be about to face Mister Mind – one of the tiniest but most powerful villains in the DC canon. We also know the film will be the first of Warner Bros.’ DC offerings in 2023 – for the moment – thanks to the October 2020 scheduling shift. In February of 2021, Rachel Zegler joined the production in a reportedly key role, while it s also been announced Helen Mirren will play villain Hespera, daughter of the god Atlas. In April, Lucy Liu signed on to play Kalypso, one of Hespera’s sisters. In May, Mark Strong confirmed he would not return as Dr. Sivana, saying the film is going in a “different direction” than the one suggested in the first film’s stinger. That change of direction was also signaled during DC FanDome, thanks to a behind-the-scenes video featuring Mirren and Liu’s characters and a number of action scenes. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam, anyone? Although that film is not on Warner Bros. release schedule at the moment, the title character’s connection to Shazam means a crossover – and a confrontation – is inevitable. In DevelopmentWith its plans for a Justice League-centric film universe abandoned in favor of more standalone productions like Aquaman and Shazam!, Warner Bros. calendar during the first few years of the 2020s reveals a number of re-thought ideas and, to borrow a term from comics, new #1 issues. At one time, the studio planned to release as many as three films per year, a target it will hit in 2022. But it remains to be seen if the projects listed below will ramp up to maintain the pace.Batgirl(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Originally intended as Joss Whedon’s writing and directing debut in the DC Extended Universe, the project is now being written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson while the studio looks for a director. Presumably, the film will establish Barbara Gordon as the Batgirl of Gotham. Her relationship to the Birds of Prey will likely be established in a subsequent sequel to either film, if at all. But considering Hodson’s involvement in both films, she probably has a plan for Babs. In May of 2021, the project became active again with Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signing on to helm the film, which is now set to be one of the first DC-related direct-to-HBO Max features. In July, the casting process seemingly narrowed in on Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson. Grace won the role later than month with J.K. Simmons entering negotiations to return as Commissioner Jim Gordan, a role he first took on in Justice League. During DC FanDome in October 2021, Grace described the character as a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined.” Co-director El Arbi added that the film will feature “realistic fights.” A piece of production art glimpsed during the presentation also suggests Batgirl will utilize a costume similar to her New 52 look in the comics. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Considering the project comes from developments outside of the original Justice League plan, it is difficult to guess how it will fit in. Perhaps Batgirl will be set sometime in the past or see Barbara taking up the cape and cowl after the Batman appears to quit.Blue Beetle(Photo by DC)What We Know: In February of 2021, word broke revealing Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm a film based on the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. The character is a Mexican-American teenager living in Texas who discovers a scarab that turns out to be an alien battle suit. It gives him fantastic powers, but makes his life much more complicated. In August, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña entered talks to play the lead role. The film joins Batgirl as one of two DC productions for HBO Max. Maridueña, Soto, and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer made an appearance at the October 2021 DC FanDome. All expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Dunnet-Alcocer saying the chance to showcase a Mexican-American superhero is a key part of the appeal. “That closeness of family is part of what sets him apart,” he said. An accompanying production painting also suggests the Blue Beetle costume will be surprisingly faithful to its comic book counterpart. How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Like Static Shock and some of the other projects, we’re going to assume the film takes place on the same Earth Barry establishes in The Flash. If so, it gives Jaime a chance to join whatever Justice League we might see in the future.Wonder Woman 3Release Date: TBAWhat We Know: Hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984’s box office success – well, at least in 2020 metrics – Warner Bros. announced a third film was being fast tracked. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are set to return. Jenkins also said the film will finally bring Diana s film series to the present day. Of course, with Jenkins heading off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it may be another four years (at least) before Wonder Woman returns. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Presuming Diana’s world still aligns to the DC Extended Universe continuity, Diana will finally be a public superhero and, perhaps, serving as an Amazonian ambassador to the world of men. In fact, reuniting her with her people after a century has a very dramatic appeal following the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Of course, if the Wonder Woman films are retroactive placed elsewhere in the Multiverse, the story could go in just about any direction. The Other BatmanRelease Date: TBAWhat We Know: In a New York Times profile of Hamada, the DC Films chief made a curious reference to the Multiverse making two Batman feature film sagas possible. One will likely continue the story of The Batman while the other will … well, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The events of Flash may give Ben Affleck’s Batman a new face in the DCEU. Or, perhaps, Hamada has convinced him to keep the cowl on for subsequent appearances. Then again, maybe HBO Max will get its own Batman. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Again, this all depends on the DCEU as we knew it existing after The Flash. But presuming this Batman is meant to interact with the other DC heroes in the established film universe, it is easy to see that aspect of his career invade any solo movies he may star in. Or perhaps, he will finally take on allies in Gotham to support spinoffs like Nightwing and Batgirl.Green Lantern CorpsRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: Announced back with Cyborg in the 2014 masterplan, Green Lantern Corps continues to slowly move forward. In June of 2018, former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns took over writing and producing the project through his production company, Mad Ghost Productions. According to the company website, the film will feature both the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film), and John Stewart, the Green Lantern voiced by Phil LaMarr in various Justice League animated series. An earlier concept developed by Man of Steel’s David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was said to be a sort of “Lethal Weapon in space” – a description which may still hold true for Johns’ concept as he worked with Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner for a number of years. With Johns participating in a Green Lantern television series for HBO Max, the project would seem to be postponed again though it is said to still be a priority for Warner Bros. Pictures. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Teased in a Justice League flashback, the lack of an Earthbound Green Lantern is part of the reason Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) chose the planet for conquest. But the film would presumably see the Corps correcting that mistake by revealing the brave humans involved in that organization. No doubt the fans of Jordan and Stewart – to say nothing of characters like Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and G’Nort, who could potentially appear in the film – will be excited to see them in an ensemble. Additionally, the film would provide a perfect platform with which to introduce DC’s space-faring characters to a larger audience. At one time, the film was slotted for a 2020 release, but with the announcement of a HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unclear if the film will ever surface.SupergirlRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: The Cloverfield Paradox’s Oren Uziel is reportedly writing a script based on the Girl of Steel. Like The Flash feature film, it will presumably ignore the successful television series on The CW and tell its own version of Kara Zor-El’s first few days as a superhero on Earth. With Man of Steel star Henry Cavill s DC future in doubt, it is unlikely that Superman will show up and help greet the cinematic Kara. The producers of the 1984 Supergirl film also tried to get then-Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in the film, but his presence was limited to a poster on a dorm room wall. In February 2021, The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle was cast as Kara for an appearance in The Flash feature. Presumably, she will lead Supergirl as well, but it currently unclear. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: If Calle continues as Kara, The Flash will determine if she’s the Supergirl of Barry’s Earth – our de facto DCEU – or one of the Mutliversal realities he visits in the film.Cyborg(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Ray Fisher has been set to star as Vic Stone in a 2020 Cyborg film since 2014, but no director or screenwriter were announced. Many doubted the film will ever materialize despite still being on the calendar. In September of 2018, Fisher suggested fans of the character may need to become more vocal to make the film a reality. In the summer of 2020, Fisher launched a campaign to expose Joss Whedon’s allegedly abusive behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. As the situation expanded to former DC Films chiefs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Fisher vowed never to work with current DC Films boss Walter Hamada – whom he alleged was pressuring him to take back his accusations about Johns. Subsequently, Cyborg’s planned role in The Flash was written out and, presumably, any chance of a solo film outing went with it.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Frankly, we’ll be surprised if Cyborg ever resurfaces in the current DC Films structure, Multiverse or no.BlackhawkRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: While it is unclear if Blackhawk will be part of the DC film universe, it is a favorite comic book of director Steven Spielberg. He even tried to get a Blackhawk movie off the ground in the 1980s. The current version of the project will see him direct a film based on the golden-age Quality Comics concept later bought by DC in 1957 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp adapting the concept. The main character is the leader of the Blackhawks squadron, a famed air outfit of seven ace pilots during World War II. When DC incorporated them into a post-war context, they became mercenaries, battled James Bond-style supervillains, and even flirted with becoming superheroes themselves! Considering the director’s fascination with the Second World War and aviation of the period, the original Golden Age version seems like the best fit, provided the film ever gets off the ground. How It Fits In The DC Multiverse: While current narrative conceits allow the film to take place in the past of Barry’s Earth, the Multiverse means the project could be as closely or loosely tied to other films as Spielberg wants. That is presuming, of course, he’s still interested in making it.Untitled Jared Leto Joker Project(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to reports, Jared Leto will star and serve as executive producer in his own solo Joker film – a deal which happens to be quite similar to Robbie’s involvement in Birds of Prey. Details are scarce, other than it will be a separate project from both the “Joker and Harley” concept and the standalone Joker. It will also spearhead a batch of films based on the characters featured in Suicide Squad, which means rumors of that Deadshot movie might be more than idle talk. Then again, it has been a long time since the actor has made any mention of returning to the role. Also, the announcement of a Peacemaker HBO Max series – centered on The Suicide Squad character played John Cena – may indicate the original spin-off plan has gone by the wayside. It would seem Leto’s time in the DC Multiverse is already over. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The Leto Joker was not only featured in Suicide Squad, but is also the murderer of Batman’s second Robin, as implied in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of Birds of Prey, his relationship with Harley is kaput, setting the two characters off in separate films series. If the “Joker and Harley” project is still happening, then it may serve as a capstone to the characters storylines across The Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Leto’s Joker. But it may also serve as a replacement for that film as Robbie’s Harley projects may preclude “Joker and Harley.” Of course, Joker’s success – and Leto’s comments about being “alienated and upset” when it was announced – may mean the end of this version of the character. His appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the very nature of the Multiverse offer some glimmers of hope, however.Joker 2(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Thanks to the success of the first Joker, a follow-up was inevitable, but details remained scarce through 2020. In May of 2021, word broke indicating the project is still in development with a surprising new tie to the larger DC Multiverse. Star Joaquin Phoenix and direct Todd Philipps will presumably return. Although the early reports were refuted, the more recent claim suggests Phillips is already writing the script. How It Fits Into the DC Multiverse: According to the May 2021 report, the film will tie into The Batman and its spinoff HBO Max series, Gotham PD. If this proves to be true, it is a change from the original film’s entirely standalone nature. Additionally, the two Joker films, The Batman, and Gotham PD would constitute the first true separate universe from the one established in Man of Steel.NightwingRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: As of February 2018, The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay was still developing a project centered on the first Robin, Dick Grayson. A final draft from screenwriter Bill Dubuque was due at the time, but there has been no movement since. Reportedly, the film has been postponed in anticipation of The Batman, which may ultimately introduce its own version of Dick Grayson. In June of 2021, McKay told CinemaBlend, I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: As established in Justice League, the Robin costume in the Batcave is not Dick Grayson’s uniform, suggesting plans for Nightwing go all the way back to the 2014 masterplan. A solo film would presumably see the character living in Bludhaven (Grayson’s adopted city in the comics) and coming to grips with becoming his own hero. McKay also plans to direct a new Dungeons Dragons film and a feature film version of Johnny Quest, so it is hard to tell if Nightwing will happen anytime soon. Last time McKay was asked about it, he said fans will have
Dark Phoenix is finally out in theaters and, well, it isn’t the greatest X-Men movie ever released. It’s currently Rotten at 23% on the Tomatometer  although audiences seemed to appreciate it more than the critics – and a strange epitaph to 20th Century Fox’s 20-year relationship with Marvel’s Merry Mutants. But considering the film is Fox s second attempt to adapt the landmark Dark Phoenix Saga, we can t help but wonder if the story is just too big to be contained in one film. As with X-Men: The Last Stand, it feels like vital pieces were lost and, while the casts of X-Men films are always sprawling, this one was missing a number of key characters. Does the story require a trilogy of its own? The Marvel Cinematic Universe proves audiences will wait a long time for payoffs, but building these ideas and characters in a way that resonates like the comic book series may be asking too much of the X-Men movies. Perhaps television is the best place to tell this story we previously got versions of it on two different X-Men animated series  and considering the way HBO and streaming services have pushed TV into feature quality, here are five reasons why Dark Phoenix is better suited for that format. It Can Build To Proper Payoffs And Endings(Photo by @ Twentieth Century Fox)Despite marketing the film as the end of the series, Dark Phoenix can t help but feel like connective tissue to another chapter. Of course, the same could be said for just about any X-Men project. It s baked into the concept, thanks to writer Chris Claremont, who made Uncanny X-Men the most important Marvel title in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Planning to stay on the book for a very long time, he seeded ideas he wouldn t pay off for years. One could call it soap opera plotting, as he provided enough hooks and payoffs to keep readers engaged while telling the ongoing tales of the X-Men as a whole. But in the case of the overall Phoenix Saga – a story comprising Jean Grey’s death, resurrection, and transformation into the Dark Phoenix – Claremont had an ending in mind. It was ultimately changed for reasons we will discuss later, but in its finished form, it offered a clear endpoint for a story told across nearly four years of comics.Tentpole filmmaking used to be comfortable with definitive endings. The first Matrix, for example, ends at a place that would have served as a satisfying conclusion had the film proven to be unsuccessful at the box office. And though we were promised a Star Wars Sequel Trilogy since 1980, Return of the Jedi is certainly an ending to the story begun in 1976. Nowadays, big movies more closely resemble the Claremont style than ever before, with endings teasing a subsequent hook for another story. In the case of Dark Phoenix, a prestige series would have the time to properly seed ideas like Xavier’s apparent mistake with Jean, the X-Men as celebrities a concept criminally underutilized in the film and one key idea not in the movie we’ll discuss in a moment. With room to breathe, these concepts would have greater weight and emotional resonance than a single two-hour film affords them. And as Claremont proved in the comics, the pace is essential. The Characters Can Be Characters(Photo by © Marvel / © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation)Despite Jean Grey appearing in films since 2000, what do we know about her? She was Xavier’s star pupil, she has extraordinary telekinetic abilities (with telepathy added at some point), and she has the hots for Wolverine despite dating Cyclops. It s thin characterization when an entire movie rests on her shoulders. And while Sophie Turner does a lot with that rough sketch, it s no accident Dark Phoenix re-frames her story in the context of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) apparently making a mistake. He is, after all, the character all the films have invested in since X-Men: First Class. That’s not a bad thing, as someone has to anchor these films besides Wolverine. But once you come back to the Dark Phoenix Saga, you need more of an emotional investment in Jean (and Cyclops, for that matter) than X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix afforded her (or Scott).A prestige X-Men series focusing on the Dark Phoenix Saga can actually frame the story around Jean and who she is besides Xavier’s greatest student and Cyclops girlfriend. Her struggle with the Phoenix Force would mean something, as viewers would know what would be lost if she let the Phoenix have complete control. In the film, these ideas are there, but rushed or inferred for the most part. And since we’re talking characters, a series also means we get to know Cyclops – a character the films have always shortchanged because he’s not as romantic as Wolverine – Storm, and Nightcrawler beyond their powers. As a result, deaths would also carry more weight, because the characters would genuinely matter to viewers. The Hellfire Club Could Be UtilizedKevin Bacon and January Jones as Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class (2011) (Photo by Murray Close/20th Century Fox)One set of characters criminally absent from both cinematic versions of the Dark Phoenix story is the Hellfire Club. Created by Claremont and artist John Byrne – though apparently inspired by a 1966 episode of the British spy series The Avengers – they debuted as a social club whose inner circle was made of mutants attempting to control the course of world events. Characters like Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost (played by Kevin Bacon and January Jones, respectively, in First Class) first appeared as members of the inner circle, who try to take control of a Phoenix-addled Jean Grey.Jean’s flirtation with domination and control is a key element of the story and something definitely missing from Dark Phoenix. Jessica Chastain’s Vuk tries to fill the role of the Hellfire Club, but the change lacks the power it should have because Vuk is more of a cipher than an actual character. Consider the satisfying biblical allusions when Jean is presented with classic, decadent temptations in the Hellfire Club. And while we’re at it, Emma Frost could offer Cyclops a temptation of his own, considering their eventual relationship during one of Jean’s many dormant periods in the comics.Incorporating the Hellfire Club also offers the story a true, seductive evil compared to the poorly realized, grubby D’Bari of Dark Phoenix. It would also give Jean, as a character, the moment to revel in her power that she never really gets in the film, and that key pivot in Jean and the Phoenix s time together is crucial to setting up the story s conclusion.Mutants In Space!(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. / ©Marvel / Everett Collection)Because Marvel Comics featured alien species from nearly the beginning of its superhero universe, the Phoenix Force’s origin as an alien entity needed very little scaffolding. And when she left Earth following her time with the Hellfire Club, her feasting on the D’Bari star also needed little set-up; the alien race was established years earlier in an issue of The Avengers. But because neither of the Fox film cycles set up aliens, the culmination of the Dark Phoenix storyline could not be used.In the comics, the Dark Phoenix returns to Earth after destroying the D Bari home world, and a council made up of the Kree, the Skrulls, and the Shi’ar Empire determine the Phoenix is too dangerous. The Shi’ar arrive on Earth and pronounce a death sentence on Jean, but Xavier convinces the Shi’ar Empress to allow the X-Men to duel her Imperial Guard in an attempt to save Jean, whom Xavier has de-powered back to her original abilities. When Jean and Cyclops prove to be the last X-Men standing, she uses a Kree device to disintegrate her body and, seemingly, disperse the Phoenix Force. It’s a big ending. But without the time to establish the Shi’ar, both Dark Phoenix and The Last Stand eschew that development in favor of smaller ideas. A television show, on the other hand, would have that time. In fact, the scenario becomes more intense if the X-Men are confronted with the reality of what Jean could do as the Phoenix and try to find an ethical outcome with the Shi’ar. It s a moral dilemma completely absent from Dark Phoenix, as the D’Bari survivors led by Vuk never seem too broken up about the billions of dead brethren they left behind on the smoldering wreck of their world.(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. / ©Marvel / Everett Collection)And, really, that moral dilemma is part of what makes the Dark Phoenix Saga so compelling. Its ending was changed when Marvel’s then Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter learned Jean and the Phoenix would face no real punishment for the D’Bari genocide. The Phoenix Force – meant to be a recurring X-Men villain in the story’s aftermath – was shelved for a time, and Jean was barred from returning until a writer could give Shooter a satisfactory way to absolve her of the crime. It eventually happened, as no one stays dead in the comics, but the implications gave the story a lasting importance across decades of subsequent X-Men comic book storylines. This is the weight Dark Phoenix should have. But without the careful planning of a Marvel Cinematic Universe or the build-up of a television series, the impact will always be lost. At this point, we would favor a television show, as it could give these ideas the chance to grow and give us a live-action X-Men team we genuinely care about as they face their greatest ethical conflict. Until that happens, if it ever should, we still have the comics, which offer the story in its grandest scale.Dark Phoenix is in theaters now.Like this? This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as Birds of Prey, Fast Furious 9, and The Matrix 4.This WEEK S TOP STORYKEANU REEVES IS ON BOARD FOR THE MATRIX 4What Do We Know About The Matrix 4?The Matrix 4 is officially happening! Here s everything we already know about Neo s upcoming return.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Thursday, August 22, 2019Ever since George Lucas ended his original Star Wars story cycle with Return of the Jedi in 1983, the trilogy has been perceived as the most popular way to sequelize a popular film. That is, until someone realizes that a perceived demand is still out there, and then nicely tied-together trilogies lead to movies like Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and most recently, Toy Story 4. The surprise success of The Matrix (Certified Fresh at 88%) in 1999 quickly led to sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (which ended the trilogy on a downtick both critically and at commercially). This week, four years after the disappointment of Jupiter Ascending (Rotten at 27%), Lana Wachowski confirmed that The Matrix 4 is moving forward with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity. Filming is expected to start in early 2020, and already this week, two key creative roles were filled: Wachowski is working with returning concept artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce, which suggests a unity in creature and production design. But in one departure, original trilogy cinematographer Bill Pope will be replaced by John Toll, who won back-to-back Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart (Toll s next film is Harriet). Warner Bros hasn t announced a release date for The Matrix 4 yet, but the filming start date suggests sometime in 2021 or 2022.Other Top Headlines1. BOND 25 OFFICIALLY TITLED NO TIME TO DIE(Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Columbia Pictures)After being called just James Bond 25 since the 2015 release of the 24th film, Spectre, this week we finally learned that the title will be No Time to Die. This makes Daniel Craig s final film as James Bond the fourth movie in the franchise with the word Die or Dies in the title, following Live or Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Die Another Day, breaking the tie with the opposite words (You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, and The Living Daylights). The title also plays as a reference to the news last month that Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch will be playing a new Agent 007 (ostensibly after James Bond retires). MGM has scheduled No Time to Die for release on April 8, 2020, as currently the highest profile film scheduled that month (its closest big competition is Disney s Mulan on March 27, 2020).2. MARGOT ROBBIE S BIRDS OF PREY TO FEATURE JOHN WICK-STYLE ACTION(Photo by Clay Enos / © Warner Bros. )One way that Marvel Studios changed the perception of who could direct action movies was by working with a series of directors whose backgrounds were not in the genre. We re thinking here of comedy director Peyton Reed on the two Ant-Man movies, horror director Scott Derrickson and Doctor Strange, the indie directors of Captain Marvel, and even the Russo brothers, who were best known for directing TV s Community before taking on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Warner Bros. has recently followed suit with Joker (from the director of The Hangover) and Shazam! (from the director of Lights Out). Next year s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2/7/2020) was likewise directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), who we learned this week will be assisted in reshoots of some action sequences by director Chad Stahelski. Before making his directorial debut in 2014 with John Wick (he also directed the sequels), Stahelski worked as stunt and fight coordinator on dozens of movies, including V for Vendetta, The Hunger Games, Speed Racer, and The Wolverine.3. HOBBS AND SHAW VACUUM IN FAST AND FURIOUS 9 TO BE PARTLY REPLACED BY MICHAEL ROOKER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Now that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham s Hobbs and Shaw (Fresh at 67%) characters have successfully been spun off into their own franchise (presumably), they re not expected to be returning in next year s Fast and Furious 9 (5/22/2020). As with many other franchises that have run this long, Universal regularly introduces new characters in each new film, and this week, we learned that the new additions to Fast and Furious 9 will include fan favorite Michael Rooker. (In addition to playing Yondu in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Rooker also co-starred in The Walking Dead.) Although the nature of his role wasn t otherwise specified, Rooker will reportedly play a new character named Buddy. Michael Rooker is the ninth film s second major new cast member following John Cena, who signed on for Fast and Furious 9 in June.4. CHRIS PRATT S NEXT TO BE SCI-FI THRILLER GHOST DRAFT (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)At various points in the last year or so, Chris Pratt was expected to be filming both the (possibly shelved) action movie Cowboy Ninja Viking and Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (not shelved, but it now has to wait for director James Gunn to finish The Suicide Squad). Instead, the next live-action movie (not counting Pixar s Onward) Pratt will star in will probably be the science fiction thriller Ghost Draft. The premise involves a future war that humanity is losing against an alien race, leading to a plan that involves using time travel to recruit soldiers from the past (possibly our present) to fight in the present (our future) time travel is so much fun to explain, isn t it? Chris Pratt s fellow Marvel co-star J.K. Simmons (A.K.A. J. Jonah Jameson) is now in talks to play Pratt s father, while Betty Gilpin (from Netflix s GLOW), Sam Richardson (HBO s Veep), and stand-up comedian Theo Von are also in talks to co-star in Ghost Draft, which will be directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie).5. ROBERT RODRIGUEZ SINGS TO NETFLIX, WE CAN BE HEROES (Photo by Gabriel Olsen/Getty Images)David Bowie s song Heroes didn t even crack the Top 100 in the USA when it was released in 1977, but the song has had a much longer legacy since, including frequent use in movie trailers. Netflix is also now planning a superhero movie called We Can Be Heroes (from the song s chorus), which will be written, produced and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is coming off his recent futuristic action film, Alita: Battle Angel (just this side of Fresh at 60%). The project already has a cast attached including Priyanka Chopra (TV s Quantico), Pedro Pascal (HBO s Game of Thrones), Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang, and Christian Slater. The premise itself involves the children of Earth’s superheroes [after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders] . [who] must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world. 6. TRACY MORGAN JOINS COMING 2 AMERICA(Photo by Ali Paige Goldstein/Paramount)Although other studios continue to pull movies out of December, 2020 release dates (including Disney, who moved Cruella to the summer of 2021 this week), Paramount Pictures is sticking with Coming 2 America, which is now one of only five movies scheduled that month. (The other four are The Croods 2, Dune, West Side Story, and the video game adaptation Uncharted.) The sequel to the 1989 hit comedy Coming to America already had stars both old (Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, and James Earl Jones) and new (Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Wesley Snipes), but a few more names were added this week as well. Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan was the biggest of the new stars announced, as he will be playing the hustler brother of Leslie Jones character, who is the mother of Prince Akeem s son, the result of a one-night-stand. Rotimi (TV s Power) also signed on for a role this week, as did Nomzano Mbatha and Garcelle Beauvais, who is actually reprising one of her first movie roles ever, as a rose petal princess. 7. KERRY WASHINGTON AND STERLING K. BROWN TO PAIR UP AS SHADOW FORCE(Photo by Eli Winston, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)We don t yet know which studio will win the auction, but a new action project called Shadow Force is now attracting bids across Hollywood. Compared to a fresh take on the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie romantic action movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Shadow Force pitch comes with two of TV s most popular stars already attached: Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us). The details pretty much end there, but if we re meant to make direct comparisons to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, then Brown and Washington might be playing contract killers who are both married to each other, and who are hired to kill each other (but that s just a guess).8. LIAM NEESON FOLLOWING UP HIS SNOW PLOW MOVIE WITH THE ICE ROAD(Photo by Maria Marin/©Sony Classics)It might be pure coincidence that these two films share similar themes, but in the same year that Liam Neeson s snow plow driver action movie Cold Pursuit (Fresh at 70%) was released, the Irish star is taking on a new movie that could easily live in the same universe. Neeson is now signed to star in the action adventure The Ice Road as a big rig ice road driver who, after a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners. The Ice Road will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, whose career Tomatometer (mostly as screenwriter) sports nine Rotten scores and just one Fresh one for 2011 s Kill the Irishman. It s not yet known if Cold Pursuit and The Ice Road will be followed by a third cold weather driving movie to complete a thematic trilogy (perhaps about driving a pack of sled dogs?).9. MARVEL AND SONY PARTING WAYS OVER FUTURE SPIDER-MAN MOVIES What Will Happen If Spider-Man Leaves the MCU?What will the MCU look like without Spider-Man? We re breaking down what the Sony/Disney split means for fans.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Wednesday, August 21, 2019If you follow online movie news at all (and by reading this far into this column, we suspect that you do), then you already know that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are parting ways over future plans for Spider-Man movies. Having said that, hopefully we can still give you some details you may not be aware of. First, to elaborate, Kevin Feige will no longer be involved with Sony s plans for Spider-Man movies after Sony reportedly rejected an offer from Disney to share costs (and profits) in a 50/50 deal. Sony then responded with a series of Twitter responses that used words like mischaracterized and disappointed, which may have been a response to criticism from some fans who were quick to side with Disney, Feige, and Marvel Studios. It s worth noting that Sony Pictures was also able to deliver both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse without Feige s help, which might have fueled their resolve. This week s news also came just a few days after Spider-Man: Far from Home became Sony s biggest box office hit ever. As for Tom Holland, he s expected to continue to star as Sony s Spider-Man (his contract still has two movies left, plus he could re-sign), and he s also working with Sony again soon as the star of their video game adaptation Uncharted (12/18/2020). As for Sony s plans, they retain their movie rights to over 900 Spider-Man-related Marvel characters, including Jared Leto s Morbius (7/31/2020), Tom Hardy s Venom 2 (10/2/2020), and other movies in development, like Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat, Silk, Silver Sable, The Sinister Six, and the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.Like this? 10. The Finale in Session 9 (2001) 64%A condemned asylum. Inside: clattering chains, disturbed wheelchairs, and crumbling wards. A group of people enter to clean up the place, some who harbor dark histories. Sound like a set up for classic dark and stormy Gothic tale? Not so with Session 9. What kind of clean up crew would work at night? Come on, this is a horror movie: Logic is king here. A slow atmospheric burn with minimal gore until its final minutes, but even when things go to hell, the blood is bathed in New England sun.9. Freddy s Coming For You in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 95%Time for a victory lap: Hop into the convertible on this bright school morning having vanquished the tormentor of fatal dreams, turn around and wave goodbye to your mom standing on the porch. Suddenly, the top slams down and the car peels down the street, as mama is sucked through the front door window. The nightmare has only just begun. The original Friday the 13th s Jason Voorhees made the last-second jump scare a mandatory inclusion for 80s slashers and beyond. Freddy Krueger may have perfected it.8. Michael Myers Stalking in Halloween (1978) 96%John Carpenter s classic did a lot of things right. Gave us a classic creepy synth score. Destroyed suburbia s manicured image as a stronghold of safety and comfort. And it rolled out the red carpet to let masked killer Michael Myers to wander and stalk his prey in broad daylight. The shot of Myers staring up at you from among the billowing laundry sheets hung to dry in the yard remains an iconic and violating image.7. The Day After in The Hills Have Eyes (2006) 52%The Carter family is subjected to a litany of brutal terror over the course of 24 hours. During the initial day, they re led off-road and their car gets mangled in the desert. The family separates in search for help. A dog gets gutted. The gas station attendant commits suicide. And always mutants are watching them from afar in the brush and rocks, leading to a long night of crucifixions, immolation, rape, murder, and baby-snatching. And then the next day, the cannibals feast on sun-cooked flesh. It s a torturous chain of events that transforms the remaining Carters into out-for-blood hunters in a highly questionable, deeply satisfying revenge ending.6. Randy s Death in Scream 2 (1997) 81%You knew director Wes Craven wasn t fooling around when he killed off know-it-all cinebuff Randy, portrayed by Jamie Kennedy as someone as smart and cynical as the audience. How could he have fallen for the afternoon masked killer in the local news van with noisy nearby breakdancers? Oldest trick in the book! But it s also series most shocking homicide outside of Drew Barrymore s, the one that tells the oh-so-smart audience that no one was truly safe. The Arquettes, Courteney and David as Gale and Dewey, frantically search for the killer in the college square by accosting students with their new-fangled mobile phones, presenting on screen when awful taunting calls escaped the constraints of landlines and curly cords, and into a new world of free-roaming terror.5. The Ceremony in The Wicker Man (1973) 88%Midsommar owes a blood debt to this provincial classic: the unsettling tale of an uptight Christian cop investigating a young girl s disappearance on an island of decadent mystic pagans has thematic and visual parallels to Aster s film. Likewise, nearly the entire movie is set during the day among verdant nature and maypole celebrations and foreshadowing musical rhymes that seem to follow the officer everywhere he goes. It s far too late when he realizes the true nature of his work, leading to a fiery climax in the friscalating dusk light.4. The Premonition in Final Destination 2 (2003) 48%Some of the best horror wedges its way into the normal, degrading the routine and humdrum into a morass of paranoia and fear. Final Destination 2 does that with the daily morning commute, because what could be more humdrum than getting in our 1,000 lb. metal husks every day, navigating them manually down the road as cars careen towards us in the opposite direction separated only by capriciously painted lines on the ground? Suddenly, something as innocent as a flatbed of loose tree logs becomes a rolling thunder revue of broken windshield, splattered heads, and Michael Bay–style auto explosions.3. The Opening Chase in 28 Weeks Later (2007) 71%28 Days Later s famous opening features calm shots of the hero wandering an empty London metropolis depopulated by zombies moments we would consider eerie, almost beautiful, but not scary. 28 Weeks Later takes the opposite approach. It s set in the countryside, as a band of infected descend upon defenseless survivors. The camera is in your face, the footage choppy and frantically (but not confusingly) edited, save for a gliding crane shot as our new hero flees across the field and towards a waiting river boat. The fact that he just abandoned his wife to the zombies moments earlier contribute to the gut-punching bleakness of the situation. Now that we consider scary.2. Leatherface Appears in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 89%Like a rusty chainsaw, Tobe Hooper s horror masterpiece takes a moment to rev up. But once it gets going, the movie is relentless, grinding down the viewer s endurance up until the famous ending of Leatherface cutting the rising sun light in boiling anger. It s a great final appearance, but his first introduction is even better. Hapless travelers, in search of gas for their thirsty boogie van, approach a piquant homestead, oblivious that its inhabitants are cannibal freaks who have no qualms doing their dirty deeds in daylight. Leatherface suddenly appears from out of a hallway, smashes his victim s head in with a hammer as the body crumples and twitches on the ground, and then slides the slaughterhouse door shut. Looks like meat s back on the menu, boys!1. The Beach Attack in Jaws (1975) 98%The scene that made a generation of filmgoers terrified of open water. It s immaculately crafted pop horror and it still works today. Steven Spielberg uses a collage of beach crowd noise and throngs of people innocently rising to disorient the viewer, telling us to be just as alert as Roy Scheider s police chief. Spielberg famously had to use every filmmaking tool he knew to overcome critical obstacles like a malfunctioning shark, and here heightens and stylizes reality as Jaws approaches the beach. A split diopter lens shot puts an obtrusive face and a possibly drowning distant swimmer in equal focus. A dog is discovered missing. We get that terrifying first-person viewpoint as Jaws picks his victim, and the incessant John Williams theme building on the soundtrack. Then a dolly zoom as terror dawns on Schieider s face. A geyser of blood erupts out in the ocean as pure pandemonium breaks out, and a frantic mother loses her son. It s a powerful scene in how powerless it makes a man of law feel against a force of nature.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

亚博竞猜APP下载 This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for stars like Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, and Tiffany Haddish. This WEEK S TOP STORYRYAN GOSLING TO STAR IN DAVID LEITCH ACTION FILM(Photo by Richard Foreman Jr/©FilmDistrict)About seven years ago, the news broke that Dwayne Johnson was in talks to star in an adaptation of the 1980s action TV show The Fall Guy, which featured Lee Majors as a luckless stuntman who investigated crimes on the side (a formula that dominated TV of that era). That project never happened, and it appears to have fallen deeply out of development, but the premise of a movie about a stuntman is still relevant (and indeed, it s what half of last year s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was about). This week, after a heated auction, Universal Pictures has landed the rights to an untitled Hollywood stuntman action drama project that has Ryan Gosling attached to star for director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw). Leitch is himself a former stuntman and stunt coordinator, and Ryan Gosling has already played a stuntman in two previous films (Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines). In their coverage of the deal, The Hollywood Reporter leans heavily into comparisons to The Fall Guy and Hollywood s long interest in a Fall Guy movie, but at this point, there seems to be no confirmation that the movie actually is an adaptation of that TV show. Other studios that bid against Universal Pictures included MGM, Paramount, and Netflix.Other Top Headlines1. BOTH BLACK WIDOW AND WEST SIDE STORY NOW DELAYED UNTIL 2021 (Photo by Marvel Studios)There are still some major movies scheduled for theatrical releases in the next few months (including No Time to Die, Pixar s Soul, Dune, and Wonder Woman 1984), but this week, Walt Disney Pictures made big changes regarding several of their upcoming films, delaying more of their most anticipated titles. Marvel Studios first return to the MCU post Avengers: Endgame will be the prequel Black Widow, which is now scheduled for May 7, 2021 after originally being dated for May 1, 2020 and then more recently, November 6, 2020. This shift means that other Marvel movies are also being bumped back, starting with Eternals (now 11/5/2021) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (now 7/9/2021). Disney also pushed back Steven Spielberg s remake of West Side Story almost a full year from December 18, 2020 to December 10, 2021. In an interesting turn of events, that means that Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights (6/18/2021) is effectively opening before West Side Story again after it was rescheduled from its original June 26, 2020 release date earlier this year. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to impact the movie release calendar, and these changes likely won t be the last, so stay tuned for more updates.2. WONG KAR-WAI NOW WORKING ON SEQUEL TO 1994 CLASSIC CHUNGKING EXPRESS (Photo by Everett Collection)When Bong Joon-ho won big at this year s Academy Awards for Parasite, including Best Picture, it shed some light on other acclaimed international filmmakers who in the past mostly had to settle for the Foreign Film category. One such director who has shockingly never been nominated for an Academy Award is Wong Kar-wai, whose filmography includes Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, and the 1996 arthouse hit Chungking Express (Certified Fresh at 87%). That film might seem like an odd choice to receive a sequel some 26+ years later, but according to Chinese authorities, that s apparently exactly what Wong Kar-wai has planned, as he has submitted a screenplay called Chungking Express 2020 that the Chinese government has approved to move into production. The plot summary offered in the filing is curious, as it first recounts the story of Chungking Express, which followed two separate stories involving police officers, and then describes a new scenario that takes place in the future: In 2036, young Xiao Qian and May are unwilling to be held back by genetic partnerings, and insist on finding their own destiny.' It remains unclear if the new film will revisit the two stories of the first movie in some way.3. TIFFANY HADDISH JOINS NICOLAS CAGE META-COMEDY(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Production will soon begin on the Lionsgate action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Nicolas Cage will play a fictionalized version of himself. The premise of the movie follows Cage as he accepts a million-dollar offer from a wealthy super-fan (played by Pedro Pascal) that leads to Cage being forced to re-enact some of his most popular classic movie scenes. This week, we found out who will be joining Pascal as another fictional character, as Tiffany Haddish has signed on to co-star in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as an eccentric rogue government agent who forces superstar Nicolas Cage to go undercover in a crazy, off-book, last-ditch effort to bring one of the largest criminal organizations in Europe down for good. It s unclear if this undercover assignment is part of the main storyline involving Pedro Pascal s character, or perhaps a b-story elsewhere in the movie (but it s probably the former).4. RON HOWARD TO DIRECT BIOPIC ABOUT CHINESE PIANIST SUPERSTAR LANG LANG (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Universal Pictures)Chinese pianist Lang Lang is only 38 years old, but he has already received an international reception more typical of a classical musician twice his age. He s also apparently impressed many within Hollywood s upper echelons, because Ron Howard has signed on to direct an untitled Lang Lang biopic to be based on his memoir, Journey of a Thousand Miles. The planned biopic will depict Lang s journey from a childhood in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang to fame both in China and across the entire world. It s not yet known if Howard or his producing partners plan on casting Lang to play himself. In a statement about the film s announcement, Lang Lang said, Dream big, work hard, and always believe in yourself. This movie, thanks to Ron Howard’s vision, will inspire young people around the world to follow their dreams and never forget they are one in a million. 5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE X TRIP OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Hollywood may move at its own languid pace, but it s nothing compared to the last few decades of manned space exploration, which seems to have drastically slowed down following the amazing speed at which it developed in the 1960s and 1970s. One of the most surprising movie announcements of 2020 thus far came in May when Tom Cruise announced his plans to become the first movie star to actually film scenes for a major Hollywood production in outer space himself. This project got one step closer to actually happening this week as the official Twitter account for Space Shuttle Almanac formally added Tom Cruise s outer space project to their list of planned missions. Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria will pilot a Space X Crew Dragon Axiom Tourist FLight in October, 2021 with Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman (American Made, Edge of Tomorrow) aboard, presumably with at least one other crew member to aid in whatever they have planned to film in space. There is no release date (or title) for Tom Cruise s space movie yet, but given the late 2021 filming, we can probably expect it sometime in 2022 or perhaps 2023.6. EVA LONGORIA IS READY (TO DIRECT) A NICE LONG SPA DAY(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After her long run on the hit ABC dramedy series Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria has increasingly turned her attention towards a new career as producer and director, including several TV shows and plans for the Flamin Hot Cheetos movie (seriously). That film could eventually become Longoria s directorial debut feature, but with pandemic delays wreaking havoc on production schedules, it s anyone s guess when that movie will even be released. In the meantime, Longoria added another movie to her possible future filmography this week, signing on with Sony Pictures to star in, produce, and direct a female ensemble action comedy called Spa Day. The premise is being kept secret for now, but it s pretty easy to imagine what it will be like based on just the title, the genres, and the star and director. We ve all seen movies.7. LONG-RUNNING SONY VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE YAKUZA GETTING ITS OWN MOVIE(Photo by Sega)This story is ostensibly about the long-running Yazuka video game franchise, but let s start by remembering another similar video game. Shenmue was a 1999 game for the Sega Dreamcast set in the world of 1980s Japanese crime gangs (and martial arts), but the reason it s particularly relevant here is that, in 2001, the cut scenes for the game were packaged together as Shenmue: The Movie. Fast forward twenty years, and it s easy to argue that many video games could be adapted as movies that way (it would probably be a lot cheaper too). The Yakuza games also published by Sega are increasingly cinematic in that way, but this week s news of plans for a Yakuza movie describe the film as live action.  Yakuza is Sega s second best-selling franchise after Sonic the Hedgehog, who made his super speed jump to the movies earlier this year, so it makes sense that the game publisher is now turning its attention towards getting a Yakuza movie produced as well. Variety describes the first Yakuza game this way: Kazuma Kiryu [is] released from a 10-year prison sentence after taking the fall for the murder of his family’s patriarch, [and as] the entire Japanese underworld is pulled into the search for 0 million stolen from the vault of his former clan, Kiryu is forced back into the lawless world of the Yakuza. 8. UNIVERSAL TO TRY OUT FANCY NEW TECHNOLOGY WITH ICE CUBE SCI-FI MOVIE (Photo by Bob Mahoney/©Warner Bros.)The old school studio system of classic Hollywood may have gone away decades ago, but we do still see today movie stars who have strong relationships with specific studios. Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube, for example, starred in Universal s Ride Along (Rotten at 18%) and its sequel (Rotten at 13%), as well as the upcoming Flint Strong boxing biopic. Ice Cube is now signed to reunite with Universal Pictures on an untitled grounded science fiction project to be directed by frequent music video director Rich Lee. The premise hasn t been revealed yet, except that it was compared to District 9, and the focus right now appears to be on the new screen capture technology that producer Timur Bekmambetov is bringing to the project.9. NEXT FATHER OF THE BRIDE REMAKE TO FOCUS ON LATINX FAMILY (Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Every once in a while in Hollywood s history, there will be a remake so beloved that it s actually more famous than the original John Carpenter s The Thing is a frequently cited example of that. Another remake that seems to have gone on to overshadow the legacy of the original movie is 1991 s Father of the Bride (Fresh at 70%), starring Steve Martin, which was actually a remake of the 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. We re getting another reminder of the remake s enduring popularity soon, as Netflix this week released the trailer for a special called Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), which promises to reunite franchise stars like Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. We also learned this week that Warner Bros. has plans for another Father of the Bride remake, this time revolving around a Latinx family as a father deals with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. This new version is also being described as more of a rom-com than previous versions of the film. Screenwriter Matt Lopez, who has previously worked on other remakes like Disney s Race to Witch Mountain (Rotten at 43%) and The Sorcerer s Apprentice (Rotten at 40%) was reportedly influenced by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended. (Photo by Eric Milner / Orion Pictures)In July 2018, it was announced that Orion Pictures had secured the rights to the first Child’s Play film, written by Don Mancini and directed by Tom Holland, but fans were to expect some major changes in this franchise reboot.Mancini is in development with a Child’s Play television series for SyFy, ensuring that all the original elements of Chucky’s rise to power (and marriage and kids) would be preserved. That frees up new director Lars Klevberg and first-time writer Tyler Burton Smith to do a totally different take on the original film, potentially spawning their own parallel franchise.Cast and crew began shooting in the fall of 2018, and Klevberg was nice enough to invite us up to Vancouver to the famed Riverview Hospital, where all your favorite spooky things are filmed, to get a glimpse of the new world of Child’s Play. Back then, no footage had been released to the public, and news had not yet broken that Mark Hamill would be voicing the uter will pick it up, and it s not going to do what it s supposed to do. So there are all kinds of things that go with it that was complicated, but we were able to work them out. This is the first time that we ve ever tried something like this. So from here on, things are going to get better. (Photo by Netflix)Helman: From the first test in 2015, that was the first time that we showed the test to Marty and to Bob De Niro, and he doesn t say much. He was just looking. He had this little tiny smile on his face and he said, you gave me 30 more years of my career, which was great.Prieto: That s funny. I mean, after the movie, I didn t hear any comments about the visual effects, but during the shooting, I do remember the first time each one of them saw the rig. They sort of raised their eyebrows like, Wow, look at that. It had all the cables and the monitors read. It was kind of a thing. But once that initial two-minute surprise had happened, then it was seamless. They completely forgot about the cameras. I do remember Pacino in particular. There s a scene where he is talking with Tony Pro (Stephen Graham) in jail, and they re sitting on a bench, and he s eating his ice cream. Tony Pro comes in for his money, and we shot that with three angles simultaneously. So each one of them has to be a three-headed monster, so it was nine cameras shooting the scene at the same time. I do remember Pacino was like, Whoa, what s all this? It was quite a thing. But, yes, as I said, initially he was surprised, but then totally forgot about it. We all hid behind our gear and made ourselves invisible.Helman: The other thing that you have to think about is that this is a brand new thing. This is the first time that we ve ever tried something like this. So from here on, things are going to get better. So the rigs are going to get very, very small. Technology is going to get faster. In visual effects, and I m sure it s everywhere in this business, we kind of stand on each other s shoulders to get to where we need to be. So I can t wait for everybody else in the industry to pick up where we left off and further this more, allowing performances to come through. The Irishman is available to stream now on Netflix.Like this?
