1. Hallelujah As anyone who has ever watched a televised talent competition will tell you, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has been subjected to its fair share of abuse over the years. Nowhere, though, has the song been more thoroughly beaten up than in this scene from Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, an otherwise fascinating superhero flick that has its hardcore defenders. What was a powerful moment in the graphic novel is laughable here, as Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) trade grunty-faces in their steampunk binoculars-looking sex pod all while the booming voice of Cohen… booms. Just when you think it can’t get any worse, the pod shoots flames at the moment of climax. Disagree, passionately? Let us know in the comments, and share your favorite so-bad-they re-good movie sex scenes. (Photo by The Library of Congress via Internet Archive)Rotten Tomatoes is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: First with The 100 Essential Spanish-Language Films, and now a spotlight on the luminous cinema magazine once dedicated to the Golden Age of Hollywood. In the early days of the movie business, dozens of trade and fan magazines sprouted up in an attempt to cater to the near insatiable thirst for information that the cinema inspired. For Spanish-speaking fans, Cine-Mundial was a godsend. Founded in 1916 as an offshoot of the trade magazine Moving Picture World, the New York-based Cine-Mundial quickly established an identity of its own, and in doing so, “positioned Spanish-speaking readers as an integral rather than peripheral audience for films,” wrote Rielle Navitski in the book Cosmopolitan Film Cultures in Latin America, 1896-1960.Cine-Mundial began as an attempt to capitalize on the growing Spanish-speaking audience in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Within a few years, the magazine shifted its focus from a trade paper to a fan magazine, with celebrity interviews, glossy photo spreads, witty columnists, and eye-popping front covers. In particular, Jose M. Recoder s striking pastel celebrity portraits graced the front of the magazine frequently in the 1930s and early 1940s.Cine-Mundial’s rise coincided with the Hollywood celebrity of Mexican stars like Dolores del Río, Ramón Novarro, and Lupe Vélez, and came at a moment when notable directors like Sergei Eisenstein (Que Viva Mexico!) and Fred Zinneman (Redes) shot films in Mexico. (In addition, some studios concurrently made English and Spanish versions of certain films, the best example being the well-regarded Spanish version of Dracula.) With correspondents in Mexico City, Havana, Buenos Aires, and Madrid, Cine-Mundial featured detailed chronicles of local filmmaking scenes and popular movie theaters. One of Cine-Mundial’s most venerable contributors was Elena de la Torre. Originally from Spain, she wrote a syndicated movie column in which she was an outspoken advocate for women both in front of and behind the camera. Eventually settling in Los Angeles with her husband Miguel de Zárraga (himself a contributor to Cine-Mundial), she was arguably the magazine’s most prominent critical voice. In addition to her work with Cine-Mindial, De la Torre also contracted with Fox to evaluate Spanish-language books for potential movie projects. While Moving Picture World ceased publication in 1927, Cine-Mundial held on for two more decades before closing its doors in 1948. By that point, homegrown film industries in Mexico and Argentina were peaking creatively and commercially, holding firm on their own turf against Hollywood fare. But over the course of its three decade run, Cine-Mundial demonstrated the strength and passion of the Spanish-speaking audience while documenting the rise of regional Latin-American cinema.(Photo by The Library of Congress via Internet Archive)Read Cine-Mundial on Some of the 20th Century s Most Seminal FilmsHere s what Cine-Mundial had to say about classic movies (the full reviews are in Spanish):The Wizard of Oz (1939): The Wizard of Oz will have people enchanted with its spell for a very long time.  – Elena de la Torre, November 1939

Martin’s popular A Song of Ice and Fire book series, was unleashed upon the seven continents with the 100% Tomatometer-rated episode “Winter Is Coming.” This episode was written by showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff and directed by HBO vet Tim Van Patten, who set the chessboard for subsequent seasons as they introduced dozens of characters who would eventually be battling ice zombies, traveling between continents, and taking part in some horrifying weddings. In the world of Game of Thrones, there is a thin line between characters being good and bad. The same can be said for the current 67 episodes: 66 of them are Fresh, 21 have 100% Tomatometer scores, and the rest mostly fall into the 90-100% Tomatometer range. With the overall 67-episode average at 94.2%, we wanted to know what factors contribute to making an episode truly rōvēgrie (High Valyrian for “great”) at 95% or more — as opposed to just really, really good.In an effort to figure out what makes up the best possible episode of GoT, we channeled our inner Maester and consulted our local Three-Eyed Raven to guide us through our research, and now that our watch has ended, we’ve identified some patterns and trends that are important to crafting the perfect episode.Read on, but beware: Spoilers will be flowing like wine at a party thrown by Tyrion Lannister.Season 1 Is the Best(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Season 1 averages a 98.1% score on the Tomatometer, making it the highest-scoring season. It’s followed by season 4 (97%), season 2 (96.7%), season 3 (93.2%), season 6 (92.6%), season 7 (91.6%) and season 5 (90.1%). Season 7 is also the only season without a 100%-rated episode.Fourth Episodes Have the Highest Critical Rating(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Four is the lucky number in the GoT world, with fourth episodes averaging a 98.4% Tomatometer score. Three of the seven fourth episodes to date have 100% Tomatometer scores, with season 2’s “Garden of Bones” (96%), season 4’s “Oathkeeper” (98%), season 5 s Sons of the Harpy (98%), and season 7’s “The Spoils of War” (97%) coming close. We noticed while reading the fourth-episode reviews on Rotten Tomatoes that the following phrases appeared frequently: “cruising along,” “things are picking up speed again,” and “this episode moved the plot forward more than the previous three combined,” suggesting that critics must appreciate the pacing of these episodes, which may be one explanation why fourth episodes have the highest Tomatometer average. It’s worth noting that the only episode of seasons 6 and 7 to receive a 100% Tomatometer score is “Book of the Stranger” (season 6, episode 4). The episode was hailed as “Game of Thrones at its best” because it “got down to business” and featured Daenerys walking through fire and emerging naked, with hair and flesh perfectly untouched by the flame. The character similarly survived a massive fire in the 100%-rated season 1 finale, “Fire and Blood,” as well — with dragons no less.Which grouping of episodes have the lowest Tomatometer average? The average for sixth episodes is 86.4%, which, in the GoT world, is considered almost Rotten.Massive Battles Are Great (As Long as Major Characters Win — Or Lose, but Still Live)(Photo by HBO)In anticipation of the epic battles involving zombie dragons and massive armies that will surely occur in season 8, we looked at the highest rated battle episodes from prior seasons.“Blackwater” (100%; season 2, episode 9), “The Rains of Castamere” (100%; season 3, episode 9), and “Hardhome” (100%; season 5, episode 8) are perfect examples of episodes delivering massive battles that feature supposed heroes losing and major characters surviving to fight another day. In true GoT style, many supporting characters are slaughtered (R.I.P., Karsi). But despite losing the battle, characters like Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister are kept on the chessboard to fight another day.In the show’s other battle-heavy episodes — including “The Watchers on the Wall” (91%; season 4, episode 9), “The Dance of Dragons” (89%; season 5, episode 9), “Battle of the Bastards” (98%; season 6, episode 9), “Stormborn” (98%; season 7, episode 2), and “The Spoils of War” (96%; season 7, episode 4) — the hero was victorious and secondary characters (Ygritte, Rickon Stark, a couple of Sand Snakes) were killed. There is, of course, an exception to the rule: dragons.Season 3 s fourth episode And Now His Watch Has Ended was the first in which the dragons took part in the fight — in this case, with the Unsullied against their former masters. Daenerys won the day, and the episode scored 100%. Similarly, season 7 s fourth episode, The Spoils of War, in which Daenerys took Drogon out to meet the Lannister army, scored a very high 97%. But in the same season s sixth episode, “Beyond the Wall” (82%; season 7, episode 6), the Night King killed Viserion, and the episode scored an 84% — he was resurrected(ish), but dead and mobile is still mostly dead. It was a Night King victory. It’s worth noting that director Miguel Sapochnik, who helmed both “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards,” will be back to direct two episodes of season 8. For the sake of the Tomatometer score, the major characters will survive any new battle scenes (even if they lose) and there are no more dragon deaths!Related: Everything We Know About Game of Thrones Season 8”What Is the Ideal Number of Locations?(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Each episode of GoT features an average of five locations, and it’s interesting to note that GoT is at its best when episodes are either scaled back to one or two locations — including “Blackwater,” “The Watchers on the Wall,” and “Battle of the Bastards,” averaging 97.3% — or spread to seven or more locations — like the excellent “The Pointy End” (100%; season 1, episode 8) or “Book of the Stranger” (100%; season 6, episode 4), averaging 94.4%. This is good news for season 8, which will bring dozens of characters from many locations together so they can battle the Night King (and his growing horde of undead warriors). We’re thinking the first few episodes will take place all over the Seven Kingdoms until the final showdown, which should take place on a massive centralized battlefield. Or a massive showdown will occur in the first few episodes, and the survivors will then fight skirmishes all over Westeros in the final episodes as wights overrun castle after castle and the Night King heads to King s Landing to teach Cersei some manners. This is Game of Thrones — anything can happen.Massive Weddings = 100% Tomatometer Scores(Photo by HBO)Five of seven GoT episodes featuring important weddings have 100% Tomatometer scores. What do these episodes have in common? They feature very expensive weddings that take place in front of large crowds. Episodes like “The Rains of Castamere,” “The Lion and the Rose” (season 4, episode 2), and “Winter Is Coming” (season 1, episode 1) go BIG with their weddings that end horribly for some.“Valar Morghulis” (91%; season 2, episode 10) and

(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Critics and fans alike are loving Avengers: Endgame. The movie is Certified Fresh at 95% and made a cool .2 billion at the global box office in its first weekend. It could very well turn out to be the biggest movie ever – and one of the most beloved. The key to its success? Critics say it s all about giving the MCU s loyal fans what they want. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend was typical in his assessment, calling Endgame,  A wonderful gift to all those who have spent the last decade-plus emotionally engaging with the lives and adventures of these characters.” It s stacked with f k yeah moments and delights, the best of which make callbacks to early films in the franchise. And one of those movies is more important than any other. So, hear us out: Endgame owes much of its success to that under-sung hero of the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron. While one of the least popular entries in the MCU, and the lowest-rated Avengers flick on the Tomatometer at 75% (which is still not bad!), Ultron deserves credit as the foundation on which the entire second half of the MCU was built. And we re about to make a spoiler-filled case as to why, breaking down the story beats and relationships that Ultron established and that Endgame would use to such great effect – so be warned if you ve not seen Endgame, Ultron, or both.Major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. Hulk Taking Control of Both Sides? It Started With Ultron.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Around the time of Age of Ultron, there was still hope at Marvel that they would be able to make a deal for the Hulk and start a string of Hulk-only movies. Universal still owned the rights to the character for all standalone films, but behind the scenes, there were talks. When it became clear that a deal was not going to be forthcoming, Marvel spread the planned events for a standalone Hulk film throughout Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and the Infinity War two-parter. That’s right, the seeds of the fantastic Hipster Hulk payoff in Endgame were first sewn in Ultron. Think back to the Hulk/Banner in Ultron; he’s held back from the team at times to make sure he doesn’t do too much damage. Then, after a wave of the finger from Scarlet Witch, he wreaks havoc. Throughout Ultron, Banner is always questioning whether the team needs a ‘code green.’ He knows the Hulk s a powerful weapon, but he s terrified that he s not in control. By Endgame, we ve finally seen the complete character arc from this struggle in Ultron, to the Hulk completely taking over in Thor: Ragnarok, to Banner s inability to summon the green guy in Avengers: Infinity War, to the eventual blend of the Hulk s might and Bruce s mind in the new movie. (The latest incarnation is a play on a storyline that first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #377, in which Banner finally has control of both the monster and his mind – adding hipster glasses with a huge cardigan is just a lovely bonus.)The Start of a Beautiful and Pivotal Relationship: Wanda and Vision, a.k.a. WandaVision.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The WandaVision relationship, as well as their powers, would become crucial to the MCU and especially to the Infinity Saga. It is also central to two of the saga s biggest moments: it s Vision s death in Infinity War that breaks our hearts, and it s Wanda s moment of revenge and power in Endgame that gives us such great feels. And that all started with Ultron. From her first encounter with Vision in Age of Ultron, Wanda is drawn to his mind; even when we still didn t know if he was good or evil, her first words about him were, “I can read him… his mind. Ultron introduces Wanda and her brother to his creation in the final stages of completion and even before his birth, Vision s mind called out to her. Talk about a meet-cute.When we finally learn Thanos master plan to gather all the Infinity Stones, we realize quickly that Vision will be in danger. The Mind Stone is the origin of his powers – it s literally fused to his head using whatever tech stuff Shuri was talking about in Infinity War. That connection sets up what might be the Infinity Saga s ultimate and most painful sacrifice: Killing Vision in Infinity War as a last-ditch effort to thwart Thanos turns out to be a pointless and heartbreaking effort – with a twist of the Infinity Gauntlet, it is all undone. We watched them fall in love, beginning in Ultron, and witnessed their tragic end in Infinity War. When she appears in Endgame, summoning her powers in fury, it s a completely satisfying bookend to everything Ultron began.Who is worthy? THE PERFECT SETUP FOR CAP S BIG HAMMER MOMENT.In one of the best scenes in Age of Ultron, the Avengers pal around with a few drinks at an afterparty. What is played as an entertaining comedic break, with the various members trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, actually sets up one of the biggest moments of Endgame. Iron Man, War Machine, Hawkeye, and – comically – Bruce Banner all try to lift the hammer and prove themselves worthy. None are successful, but for one brief moment, Captain America tugs at Mjölnir, and it quivers. The movement wipes a confident smirk off Thor’s face and signals that maybe Steve Rogers could one day wield the hammer. So it’s no surprise in the finale of Endgame to see who is lifting Mjölnir. Thor even exclaims, “I knew it!” (It s actually another direct pull from the comics: Captain America is one of the few worthy enough to wield the hammer forged in the heart of a dying star – we re still getting goosebumps just thinking about it.)Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and the farm.According to Ultron director Joss Whedon, there were several creative differences between him and Marvel Studios during the filming of Age of Ultron, none more contentious than the debate over the trip to the farm to meet Clint’s family. Marvel brass were apparently not into giving Hawkeye a familial backstory – having seen Endgame, we re thankful they lost on that one. The broken, singularly focused, vigilante Ronin that Hawkeye becomes in Endgame doesn t have the same resonance if we haven t spent time with his family. (And what about that opening scene?!) The device of the farm is also used to further establish the closeness between Natasha and Hawkeye, as in Ultron we learn that she is the only one with prior knowledge of the farm and his family life. These quiet moments raise the emotional stakes of the fight we see between Clint and Natasha in Endgame, as they do battle over who will sacrifice themselves for the Soul Stone. Without the Ultron setup, those stakes would not be so high.Tony vs. Cap: A Civil War begins.Civil War may have been the first battle between the Avengers, but some early, quiet shots were fired in Ultron. The argument on the farm during which Steve scolds Tony for creating, and especially for not telling him about, Ultron, is one many will point back to as the start of their fracturing. Then there is the physical fight between Captain America and Iron Man that happens later in Ultron, while Tony tries to finish his Vision . Steve and Tony come to blows about it just before Thor harnesses lighting to finally birth Vision. The Russo brothers told us in our extended interview that the Avengers failed in Avengers: Infinity War because they were divided, and the cracks of that fatal divide first began to appear in Ultron. Even direct quotes from Age of Ultron reappear in Endgame with Tony repeating his warning, “We’ll lose – adding Steve’s reply of “We’ll lose together” is of little solace. That broken version of Tony, ripping his core from his chest, was perhaps even harder to watch than his heroic end.Tony, always trying to get ahead of things.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It starts and stops with Tony. The whole plot of Ultron comes from one driving force: Tony’s fear of the next thing from space trying to annihilate the earth. That up there, he quips, pointing to the sky and referencing the alien invasion of New York. That s the endgame. And it was, in every sense of the word. Thanos does come to destroy the earth, and that threat is what the Avengers were created to stop. Tony, in creating Ultron, was trying to win a war before it started; during the wood cutting argument, Steve astutely reminds him, “Every time someone tries to win a war before it starts, people die.” Before the events of Ultron, Tony created Veronica just in case they ever lost control of The Hulk (or a lullaby didn’t work). The Hulkbuster back-up plan kind of worked. That drive to plan ahead, to be prepared, may have been a fatal flaw with Ultron, but it also allowed Tony to outsmart Thanos in Endgame. The glove Tony installs on his suit to steal the infinity stones is just that type of planning. He was reluctant to join the second fight and the visions of defeat he saw in Ultron still haunt him, but he was, in the end, able to use that fear to defeat their most formidable foe. It s a complete bookend to the character and his essential motivation.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)And there are so many smaller Ultron setups:Ragnarok: Heimdall first teases Ragnarok and the fact they will lose in Thor’s vision before he later heads to a cave to get more answers. Thor sees the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet for the first time. More breadcrumbs to our final battle.Avengers Assemble: The “Avengers Assemble” line that Captain America calls out in the final battle was first teased in Ultron. A near synonymous tag line for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it is a line comic book fans have been waiting to hear. We cut to credits before Cap could call it out in Ultron, but we finally get it in Endgame.Wakanda: In a quick scene with Ulysses Klaw, we first hear reference what would turn out to be the key destination in the highest-grossing superhero movie ever – before Endgame. Vibranium, Andy Serkis with a Wakandan tattoo, and the rest is history.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America Back With Carter: We’d have to guess it’s not a coincidence that Wanda’s visions sent Captain America back to Agent Carter and the 1940s. Throughout the series, his greatest regret is not being able to share a life with her, thus making his ending as an old man who stole time to get a life all the sweeter. Fine, I ll do it myself : We meet a winking and silent Thanos in The Avengers, and we first spy the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor’s Scarlet Witch vision. But it s not until Ultron s mid-credits stinger that we see our big baddie in full armor – voiced by Josh Brolin – snatching the gauntlet and saying, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The Avengers Facility: A small but noteworthy moment. The Avengers get a new home. The Avengers compound is basecamp going forward.

Rick/Cliff relationship is reportedly inspired by the real-life actor and stuntman duo Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham. They are fictional characters, as is Rick’s agent Marvin Schwarz (Al Pacino). But it’s the colorful assortment of real-life figures from the period that make Once Upon A Time a Who’s Who of late- 60s Tinseltown.Australian Oscar nominee Margot Robbie stars as Sharon Tate, and another Aussie actor, Justified star Damon Herriman, plays Charles Manson.(Photo by Weinstein Company)Bruce Dern plays George Spahn, the California rancher who was persuaded to allow the Manson Family to live on his property. (Remember the Spahn Movie Ranch?) The role was originally, in fact, supposed to be played by Burt Reynolds, who died in September of 2018. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes promoting his Certified Fresh film, The Mustang, Dern had this to say about Tarantino s film: All I can say is this is me telling you he s a magician, because in this movie, he did something mad. It s probably the most unique endeavor I ve seen a director undertake and do. Without ruining the movie for you I can t tell you what that is, but the minute you get to see it, you will say, Bruce Dern is absolutely right.' Dern continued: You ll know, because he did the single most unpredictable thing I ve ever seen a director do, in this movie. And I don t mean a moment; I mean the entire movie. Because, you know what, you probably remember something about the Manson Murders, and How horrendous! and so forth and so on. Well, everybody says, Oh my God! I can t wait til Quentin does the Manson Murders. There s a movie about that, I can t wait, and so forth and so on. Well, I won t say a word, but remember I told you what I told you. Perry plays Scott Lancer, one of the main characters on the Western TV series Lancer, which ran on CBS from 1968 to 1970.Other stars playing both true-life and fictional characters include long-time Tarantino mainstays Michael Madsen and Tim Roth, as well as Kurt Russell, Timothy Olyphant, Lorenza Izzo, Maya Hawke, Rumer Willis, and Scoot McNairy.Keep in Mind Ryan FujitaniTarantino has been known to play hard and loose with history. Remember how Inglorious Basterds imagined an alternate reality in which American Jewish soldiers took their revenge on Hitler and murdered him at the height of WWII? Dern s words seem to suggest it might.Sharon Tate’s sister Debra, who’s been very protective of her sister’s legacy and, according to an article on Nerdist.com, was already protesting the film even before she knew what it was about, told TMZ: “This movie is not what people would expect it to be when you combine the Tarantino and Manson names. What Can We Expect from Marvel s Phase 4?A Doctor Strange horror movie, Mahershala Ali as Blade and more there s so much to be excited about for the MCU s Phase 4.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Monday, July 22, 2019On Saturday, July 20, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to present what would amount to a whopping TEN titles the studio has scheduled over the course of 2020 and 2021. This included both theatrical feature film releases and the new MCU series that have been announced for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. Here s a rundown of everything we learned during the course of the densely packed hour-and-a-half presentation. [Editor s note: With the confirmation that the schedule Marvel revealed at its panel is the entirety of Phase 4, we have updated this article accordingly.]AVENGERS: ENDGAME OFFICIALLY TOPPLED AVATAR FOR #1 BOX OFFICE RECORDRyan FujitaniNow that Disney owns the various Fox film properties, the studio finds itself in a situation where it regularly competes against itself at the box office. Having said that, James Cameron s Avatar was very much an old school 20th Century Fox release (having been released 10 years ago), so its position as the #1 box office champion of all time might have been something Disney was okay with ending, even if the Avatar sequels are still a long-term high priority (Avatar 2 is scheduled for December 17, 2021). To that end, in late June, Marvel Studios did a special push on Avengers: Endgame, with an extra scene, in the hopes that it would top Avatar, but recent speculation was that it fell just short. Not so fast, Disney seemed to say at their Marvel Studios panel Saturday, as they announced that Avengers: Endgame will earn the 0,000 needed to beat Avatar on Sunday, July 21st, 2019. The next question: will Avatar 2 be able to beat .79 billion in early 2022?SCARLETT S JOHANSSON S BLACK WIDOW CONFIRMED FOR NEXT MAY(Photo by Marvel Studios)The downside of Marvel Studios holding back certain announcements until late July is that their fans read movie news columns, so many of them already knew that they had cast the solo Black Widow movie and started filming in late May of this year. Marvel has had an untitled movie scheduled for May 1, 2020 for well over a year, which seemed very obviously to be Black Widow since they have no other movie in the works in between Spider-Man: Far from Home and Black Widow. Having said that, there were things to show off for Black Widow, such as a first look at footage from the film (which isn t online yet), and at least one casting update. English actress Florence Pugh (Lady MacBeth; Midsommar; Amy March in Greta Gerwig s upcoming Little Women) will co-star as Yelena Belova, who in the comics is the second Black Widow after Scarlett Johansson s Natasha Romanoff. We also learned that Stranger Things David Harbour will be playing Alexei Shostakov, a.k.a. Red Guardian, and Marvel villain Taskmaster will appear in the film, though we don t yet know who is playing him.THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER TO BE FIRST MARVEL SHOW ON DISNEY+(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios mixed things up a bit this year by giving as much time and attention to their various TV shows on the upcoming Disney+ app as they did for their feature films. Although the Disney+ app is still confirmed to launch on November 12, 2019, one surprise is that we will have to wait nearly a year before the first of the new Marvel shows appears on the service. That show will be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with both Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles from various Captain America and Avengers movies. The big reveal for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier came in the form of German actor Daniel Brühl, who will not only return as Baron Zemo (from Captain America: Civil War), but in a brief video was shown sporting his character s iconic purple mask. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will debut on the Disney+ app sometime in the fall of 2020 (before November 6th). It s also worth noting that all of the Disney+ titles that were announced during the panel appeared in a timeline graphic labeled as PHASE FOUR, implying that the TV series will factor into the ongoing MCU narrative.THE ETERNALS CONFIRMED FOR 2020, WITH CAST REVEALED(Photo by Marvel Studios)Ever since Angelina Jolie was the first star cast in The Eternals, there has been an assumption that she would be playing long-time Avengers member Sersi. At the panel this weekend, however, it was revealed that Jolie is instead playing Thena, the inspriation for the Greek goddess Athena. (In the comics, Thena is also Thanos cousin, but it s possible Thanos connection to The Eternals may not remain the same in the movies.) Kumail Nanjiani is also not playing the character people suspected (the speedster Makkari), but will instead play Kingo, who is a samurai Eternal in the comics, but might be interpreted differently in the MCU. The Eternals will also have a few gender swaps, as both Ajak and Makkari, who are men in the comics, will be played by women instead (Salma Hayek and Lauren Ridloff, respectively). Although Sersi seems to be absent, another 1990s Avengers member will be in The Eternals instead, with Train to Busan star Don Lee (a.k.a. Ma Dong-seok) cast as Gilgamesh, a.k.a. The Forgotten One (best known for joining the Avengers when Reed and Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four did). Marvel Studios has scheduled The Eternals for November 6, 2020.THE REAL MANDARIN WILL DEBUT IN SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the comics, one of Iron Man s most iconic villains since the 1960s has been the Mandarin, which is why he was teased in the first Iron Man, and ostensibly why The Mandarin was in Iron Man 3. Except, of course, he really wasn t. The decision to not include the Mandarin in his classic depiction may have been a fortuitous one for Marvel, however, as that means the villain was available for the Shang-Chi movie, now called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. (Shang-Chi also needed a new villain, as his original arch-nemesis, Fu-Manchu, has not aged well at all.) Relatively unknown Canadian actor Simu Liu will star as Shang-Chi, with acclaimed Hong Kong actor Tony Leung playing the real Mandarin. Awkwafina was also announced in an unknown role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will leap into theaters on February 12, 2021.WANDAVISION TV SHOW WILL TIE INTO CAPTAIN MARVEL (AND POSSIBLY THE BIGGER MCU PICTURE)(Photo by Marvel Studios)Once you get past that title, the second Marvel Studios show on Disney+, WandaVision, has a lot of promise. In the comics, the relationship (and eventual marriage) between Scarlet Witch and the Vision has been one of the sweetest in Avengers history, but it s also had a dark side that, in the early 2000s, changed the entire Marvel Universe for a while. We re trying not to be too spoilery here, but the ways in which Scarlet Witch changed things tie directly into one of the ways in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to change later in Phase 4 (we ll just let that tease sit, and comics fans know what we re talking about, anyway). WandaVision will also directly tie into the next Doctor Strange movie (more below on that) and Captain Marvel, as Teyonah Parris will co-star as Monica Rambeau, who in Captain Marvel was the young daughter of Carol s friend Maria Rambeau. (In the comics, Monica Rambeau also becomes a superhero and Avengers member known first as Captain Marvel, and then later as Photon and Spectrum.) WandaVision will debut on Disney+ sometime between February and May of 2021.MARVEL S FIRST HORROR FILM WILL BE DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS(Photo by Marvel Studios)Doctor Strange is a character whose adventures often take place amidst dazzling color and lots of eye candy (something the first Doctor Strange movie depicted well), but there are also a lot of darker themes and concepts (one of his main villains is Nightmare, for example). With that in mind, it absolutely should not be surprising that his next film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was revealed at SDCC as being the first scary MCU film. This movie might also be the best example of a film that Marvel Studios really had to wait to reveal until after people had seen Spider-Man: Far from Home, because otherwise, it might have ruined one of that film s biggest secrets. Benedict Cumberbatch will be joined in his sequel by Elizabeth Olsen, as a follow-up to her Disney+ show, WandaVision. In the comics, Scarlet Witch s powers are much more expansive than we ve seen so far in the MCU, but her involvement here suggests that ll change. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 7, 2021, and Scott Derrickson who appropriately has some serious horror films on his resume will return to direct.FAN FAVORITE TOM HIDDLESTON WILL RETURN AS LOKI ON DISNEY+ IN 2021(Photo by Marvel Studios)Time travel is so much fun. Since Avengers: Infinity War came out over a year ago, we re going to guess that it s no longer a spoiler that Loki met a very bad end at the beginning of that movie. That was, however, until Avengers: Endgame introduced time travel elements. (Is that a spoiler? Then in no way did Avengers: Endgame have time travel.) Having said that, it s also possible that Hiddleston s Loki show on the Disney+ app might come about in some unrelated way. Of all the Disney+ shows, Loki is probably the one we know the least about, but we ve got plenty of time to speculate away on it. Loki won t debut until 2021 (probably between May and July).WHAT IF JEFFREY WRIGHT VOICED THE WATCHER IN THE FIRST DISNEY+ MARVEL SHOW?(Photo by Marvel Studios)Arguably, one of the best things Marvel Comics ever had going for it over DC Comics when it came to defining its continuity was that DC Comics did not have the long-running series, What If?, in which stories could be told outside continuity, for a stronger sense overall. In the summer of 2021, Marvel Studios will be able to experiment with that sort of storytelling in the MCU when the animated series What If ? debuts on the Disney+ service. Right now, we only know the premise of the first episode ( What If Agent Peggy Carter Became Captain America Instead of Steve Rogers? ), but the massive voice cast revealed at the panel suggests What If ? will touch nearly every corner of the MCU. Several familiar faces or voices, as it were will be reprising their roles in the show, from Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Josh Brolin as Thanos to Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. As for Uatu the Watcher, the long-running narrator of the What If ? comics, he will be the narrator here as well, with Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, HBO s Westworld) supplying his voice.KATE BISHOP TO JOIN JEREMY RENNER IN DISNEY+ S HAWKEYE(Photo by Marvel Studios)You might notice that the general theme to these Disney+ shows (besides What If ?) is that they feature various Avengers members who aren t otherwise likely to get their own movies (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, specifically). Another example of that is Jeremy Renner s Hawkeye, who has been around the MCU since 2011 s Thor. Comic book history is littered with attempts at bringing in new blood to aging superhero premises, but comic book writer Matt Fraction was able to do just that in 2012 when he launched a new Hawkeye series about Clint Barton s friendship with Kate Bishop, a young archer who had appropriated the Hawkeye nom du heroic. We don t yet know who will be cast as Kate Bishop, but Hawkeye will indeed be about their generational exchange when it debuts on Disney+ in the fall of 2021.NATALIE PORTMAN WILL WIELD THE HAMMER IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Even if you re not a regular comic book reader, you may recall how much media attention Marvel attracted in 2014 when they introduced a new female Thor (who was eventually revealed to be his long-time human love interest, Jane Foster). Jane Foster was also the character that Natalie Portman played in the first two Thor movies, so when Portman seemed to step away from playing Foster, some fans thought that meant we d never see a female Thor in the movies. That s partly why one of the biggest surprises to come out of Marvel s SDCC panel was that Natalie Portman will be playing the title character in Thor: Love and Thunder when it s released on November 5, 2021. Chris Hemsworth will still be in the movie too, as will his Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson, who said of her character,  I think first of all as king, she needs to find her new queen. Returning director Taika Waititi revealed that the new film was inspired by Jason Aaron s The Mighty Thor storyline from the comics, which might provide some clues as to where the story will go.THE FANTASTIC FOUR AND THE MUTANTS  ARE IN THE MCU S FUTURE(Photo by TM & Copyright (c) 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Ever since Disney acquired the Fox film and TV properties, fans have been wondering when characters like Deadpool, Fantastic Four, and the various X-Men would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, some fans apparently not familiar with what a Mysterio is even thought that we might see them introduced in Spider-Man: Far from Home. As the panel neared its end, Kevin Feige alluded to the fact that, yes, finally, Fantastic Four and the mutants (however one wants to interpret that) are now in active development for inclusion at some point. Having said that, we now know which five films are scheduled for Phase 4 in 2020 and 2021, so the earliest we might see Fantastic Four, Deadpool 3, or X-Men would be in 2022.MARVEL S PHASE 4 WILL ALSO BLACK PANTHER 2, CAPTAIN MARVEL 2, AND GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3(Photo by Marvel Studios)At one point, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was considered to be in such active development that it would be filmed this year and then released in the same slot next year that is now going to Black Widow, but that was before James Gunn was temporarily fired (he s back in Disney s good graces again). With only five movies announced for Phase 4, one might wonder about some of the obvious sequels. Well, Marvel confirmed that three of them are indeed still in the works: Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. For both Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, the delays until no sooner than 2022 might have to do with cast scheduling, as they re both ostensibly team movies with big stars who are in high demand for other projects.TWO-TIME OSCAR WINNER MAHERSHALA ALI WILL REPLACE WESLEY SNIPES AS BLADE(Photo by Marvel Studios)When Marvel Studios put their new calendar up on the big screen at their SDCC panel this year, the last date was in 2021, indicating that Phase 4 will conclude with Thor: Love and Thunder. One new film that we now know Marvel Studios is actively developing (possibly for 2022 or 2023) is their reboot of Blade. The argument can be made that the original 1998 Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, was the first Marvel Comics adaptation to have any sort of box office success, so a new Blade movie, probably close to 25 years later, might be long overdue. For their new daywalker vampire slayer, Marvel Studios has cast two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, who co-starred as both the villain Cottonmouth in season 1 of Netflix s Luke Cage and the villain The Prowler in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As the panel came to a close, Kevin Feige coyly introduced Ali, who walked on stage and put on a baseball cap with BLADE emblazoned across the front before the hall went dark and the title treatment appeared on the big screen. Pretty dramatic way to end the panel, and fans went wild.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

欧宝app Unfortunately, the first film under Disney’s newly branded Searchlight Pictures got buried. A remake of 2014’s Force Majeure, Downhill was released in 2,301 theaters, the fifth-largest opening weekend launch in Searchlight’s Fox history. But Downhill s .67 million start from Fri-to-Sun was lower than any of their 2,000+ theater launches, below even 2016’s plagued The Birth of a Nation start with million. Downhill is estimated to gross .19 million over the holiday, the lowest wide opening ever for a film starring Will Ferrell. The Top 10 And Beyond: Fantasy Island, The Photograph Open DecentlyLet s talk for a moment about Birds of Prey – or as it is now known in the marketing, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. There has been a lot of chatter of box office analysts jumping on the negative train when it comes to what it has made so far, while others push back that the film is actually doing fine. Part of that debate was set up by the tracking companies which predicted for weeks an opening in the million range. Now even if the film had achieved that, it still likely would have been the lowest opening for a film in the recent DC Cinematic Universe. (Shazam opened to .5 million.) The fact that it opened million lower than that is what set off alarm bells and maybe even a few reactionary claims. Remember that every film’s ultimate success is in relation to its budget. While perception can play a factor, let us focus specifically on where the film is in purely business terms.Let’s take the conservative route and say HQ:BOP cost .5 million to make, the lowball figure reported by Box Office Mojo. While it has grossed just .2 million in its first 10 days domestically (and .6 million with the holiday), it is up to 5 million worldwide. That puts it 8 million away from breaking even. How much of that can it make up in the U.S.? Well, films in February that have made between million and million in 10 days have finished between - million. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail is the highest-grossing film in February after 10 days (.5 million) not to reach 0 million. Four films to gross below million in that time (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Peter Rabbit, How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days, Wayne’s World) managed to reach the milestone. Back to Birds of Prey though: That means to break even the film still needs around another - million internationally, where it only made another million this weekend. Now if the budget was more in the 0 million region it is still going to need about another 4 million to reach profit. Anyway you slice it, the film is likely to be a disappointment regardless of whether it reaches nine digits here. Over to a pair of new releases that will not reach 0 million but do have a shot at making a profit. Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island did not screen for critics nor even hold any Thursday night previews. Nevertheless it grossed an estimated million over the four-day holiday, doubling its million production budget. A small P A addition and, even with a huge drop next week, the film could find itself in the black by the weekend. The Photograph got the best reviews among the wide newcomers this week and grossed a decent .3 million over the holiday. However, its budget was a little higher at million so it is going to take some word-of-mouth past Valentine’s Day weekend.Moving over to definitive success stories in the Top 10, Jumanji: The Next Level passed the 0 million mark and is approaching 0 million worldwide. Sony also owns the biggest success of 2020 so far with Bad Boys for Life, which has just passed 9 million worldwide. No film that has grossed over 9 million after 31 days of release has failed to gross 0 million domestic. Bad Boys 3 passed 1 million on Sunday. Sam Mendes’ 1917 may have come up short at the Oscars last Sunday but it has just passed 5 million domestic and over 3 million worldwide. Some of that profit will go to cover Universal s disastrous Dolittle, which is up to million in the U.S. and 2 million worldwide, not even close to recouping its 5 million budget.Of course the big winner at the Oscars was Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which Neon put back into 2,000 U.S. theaters this weekend. It made its first appearance into the Top 10 – despite being available on physical and streaming – with .47 million. That puts its domestic total at .34 million, which makes it the sixth highest-grossing non-English language film ever. It will pass Instructions Not Included (.46 million) for fifth by tomorrow, where it will then rank only behind Zhang Yimou’s Hero (.71 million), Life is Beautiful (.24 million), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (8.07 million), and The Passion of the Christ (0.27 million). Neon also had Portrait of a Lady on Fire in 22 theaters this weekend, where it grossed 4,707, equaling a ,395 per-theater-average, 2020’s highest to date over Bleecker Street’s The Assistant (,785 in four theaters).

Manuel Betancourt for Rotten Tomatoes: Hearing you talk about all these movies, it strikes me that you are very fascinated with characters who are straddling the line between what they want to tell other people and the stories they re telling themselves. That feels like what’s going on with Steve in Monster. Is that what drew you to the part?Kelvin Harrison Jr.: Yeah, I think, it’s the search for identity. I think that s the thing about those characters. They re in a moment where they re trying to really figure out what they want and, I mean, that s every movie, that s everyone in everything — we re always trying to figure out what we want, what we need, and how do we get it. [Steve]’s 17 and his particular circumstances are: he s privileged, he s Black, and he s curious. And now suddenly everyone s sitting there trying to tell him who he is, what he can do, and that, because he s Black, he suddenly is grouped in with a bunch of other guys. And now he s on trial and it doesn t really make sense to him. He s just like, Dude! I’m just trying to figure out, like, what sneakers look like. I m trying to figure out where he got jewelry from, or if he likes that girl, just stupid s t. And it s very simple. It isn t that deep. And now he s supposed to be really serious and tough to try to convince people of his humanity. He s not innocent until proven guilty, he s guilty until proven innocent. And he has to determine that based on somebody else s standard of humanity. And that’s such a wild bag to fit in. I also found that when I first started working. I was sitting there (and I even find myself in this trap now) with people telling me who I am and why I need to be a certain way and what people will accept and what people won t accept and what people will think is, you know, too crazy: You need to do this part or you can t do this and you can t dress this way, you can t say that, you know? I m just kind of like, What? I m 26. Let me decide that. I think that was the case when I first got the job. I was exploring that then, and I m still exploring it now. I think we do that for the rest of our lives.(Photo by Netflix © 2021)RT: A film like Monster feels like it’s part of a constellation of projects, alongside Luce, Waves, and Monsters and Men. What are the things you re looking for in these parts and in the projects?Harrison: I think it’s something that the films are drawn to me and I’m drawn to them because of the path that I had gone on. One kind of serves the other, in a way. I don t know if I want to say it’s a typecast thing because I don t really think it’s like that, to be honest. It’s kind of more like chapters. I ve always seen my career like that. When I first started, my first job when I got my SAG card was on 12 Years a Slave. And then after that, Roots came. And then, after that, Underground came, and then after that, Birth of a Nation came in. That s the Understanding My History chapter. And then I feel like I got into like this Black Lives Matter chapter: Monster happened and then Monsters and Men happened. And then Luce happened, and Waves happened. And I think all of those talk about young Black men dealing with the trauma from slavery. The origins of their trauma started then. And it s interesting because now, with Godfather of Harlem and BB King [in Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis project], I ve been dealing with the 60s now, the Civil Rights era. And, I think, you know, it s unpacking what blackness means for me and for everyone in this moment as we really start to pull back the curtain and go, let s take a look at the systems. Let s take a look at that because we re not standing for it anymore. So I guess the movies have been an examination, finding the nuance that these directors and writers and performers are all trying to unpack based on the knowledge they ve attained over their time on Earth. And if that s what I end up doing for the rest of my career, that s cool. That stuff means something to me, you know? It means something from me.Monster is available on Netflix from May 7, 2021.On an Apple device? (Photo by Chris Delmas/AFP via Getty Images)Whitney Friedlander for Rotten Tomatoes: You re playing three versions of the same person. Does that make it harder than just playing three different characters?James Wolk: In some ways, it is more challenging because you can t just go and create three different characters. You have to really think about, in a nuanced way, how someone s life can change in 10 years. So it s basically creating the same backstory from birth until 21. And then everyone takes a divergent road.Obviously, costumes and makeup play a part in this. But does that also affect your posture, your cadence, etc.?Yeah, absolutely. All three versions of this guy are so different, right? You have the rock star, who is super confident versus the nurse, who s down on his luck. I think that s a posture thing, for sure — just the way we hold ourselves when we re feeling really confident versus when we re feeling down on our luck. And then the cop, who s to me is kind of like a big kid. So he s just kind of like a big Labrador. Wardrobe help big time. There s wigs. there s a beard expert that came in and hand-laid that beard for each for each time I was rock star (Photo by NBC Entertainment)The musician character, naturally, performs a lot and the police officer sings in the pilot. You can sing. But do you play the guitar and the piano?I sing, but I sing to my kids: my four-year-old and my two-year-old. So what you hear is my voice. I do play guitar. But they did bring in a guitar aficionado to really play it. That is me singing. That is me playing guitar. And when you hear it in the mix, you re hearing the guitars, but you re getting my voice because my guitar skills are like that of a camp counselor. I can play, like, Cats in the Cradle and a couple of songs around the fire. I don t have rock-star technique. And there was a great vocal coach in Chicago. I haven t sung seriously since high school when I used to do high school musicals. And they brought in this guy and he was amazing. He added two notes to the top of my register that I never thought I could hit.In all versions of this, Joe is successful. He s a really good nurse. He s an extremely successful musician. He s a really good cop. Was that interesting? Were there conversations about having a Joe who wasn t doing well in his career? It s interesting. Nurse Joe is down on his luck, but it s with his marriage. They all have their thing [that s not going well] like, in their show, his marriage isn t going well. Music Joe: he s always wanted to be a dad. It appears in the pilot that his dad passed away on 9/11 and there s a whole backstory that will come out as the series goes on. I think, he has always wanted to replicate that father-son relationship. For him, he and his wife deal with infertility. With Cop Joe, he never moved on with his life. He froze in time; he has Peter Pan syndrome. So they all have something that s eating at all of them. You keep calling them Music Joe or Cop Joe. Is that what you call them on set or are there nicknames for them?We should get nicknames for them.(Photo by Jaimie Trueblood / © AMC / Courtesy: Everett Collection)This isn t the first time you ve played characters with a sort-of double life. You did the short-lived series Lone Star. And even your character on Mad Men, Bob Benson (pictured), had a sort of double life because he was a gay man living in the closet. Is there something that draws you to these characters?Subconsciously, I m attracted to that duality. I think that I m someone who went on this path to become an actor. But prior to this, I had so many different interests. I was attracted to that script because I felt like I had a lot of ways I wanted to go at 21 — like vastly different ways. Like grad school. Or did I want to pursue acting? Or did I want to stay in my hometown of Michigan? Or did I want to go to New York? Each one of those choices would have led me to completely different paths. I m married with two kids now. And I m in love with my wife, and I have these two amazing kids. Had I made a different choice, the probability is that I would have a totally different family. So that concept is really interesting to me.And then along those lines, Lone Star and Bob Benson: just the idea of the faces we show versus who we really are inside? It also interests me.Ordinary Joe premieres at 10 p.m. September 20 on NBC.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

欧宝app (Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)It was no secret that The Abomination/Emil Blonsky would be re-entering the MCU in phase 4; during last December s Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that the villain, first portrayed by Tim Roth in The Incredible Hulk, would be a part of upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk. Roth further confirmed the news. But it turns out we will see The Abomination even sooner than that – and we just got the confirmation from Feige himself.Check out: Kevin Feige s Oral History of the MCU s First Three PhasesWhen the studio dropped its trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings last Friday, keen-eyed fans noticed that the character – or a creature that looked almost exactly like him, with a few improvements like those larger fins along his spine – appeared in the last few seconds, fighting in what looks to be an underground tournament. His adversary? Well, it looked more than a little like Wong (Benedict Wong), the sorcerer first introduced in Doctor Strange. But Wong, the actor, was not officially credited in the Shang-Chi cast list (though a lunch in Sydney between the star and Shang-Chi lead Simu Liu had raised some suspicions).Rotten Tomatoes sat down with Feige this week for an extended look at Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the full video of which will be available shortly in the lead-up to Black Widow s release. When we asked for confirmation that we had indeed seen The Abomination squaring off against Wong in the closing moments of the Shang-Chi trailer, Feige revealed that our eyes were not deceiving us. Yes, we just recently released the final trailer for Shang-Chi, said Feige. Some fans said, This looks like a character they hadn t seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong. Feige went on to say that the ability to bring back characters like The Abomination is one of the joys of his work on the MCU. [It s] a fun thing to have a character that we haven t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU. And to see fans on that little tag of the trailer recognize that and embrace that is great fun. (Photo by Jasin Boland, © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Shang-Chi also affords Marvel Studios a second go, of sorts, at another storied villain: The Mandarin. In the comics, the character, which was teased in Iron Man 3 but who, in that film, turned out to be bumbling actor-for-hire Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) – much to some fans chagrin – is the founder of the Ten Rings, and the Ten Rings will make a proper debut in the upcoming solo film. That s what s fun about the MCU at this stage, Feige told Rotten Tomatoes.  We can do something like Shang-Chi, introducing a brand new hero into the MCU and into the world at large. But that subtitle, The Legend of the Ten Rings, actually connects it back to the very beginning of the MCU, the Ten Rings being the organization that kidnapped Tony Stark at the very beginning of Iron Man one. And that organization was inspired by a character called the Mandarin in the comics. And going back to Iron Man one: We ve been talking about that when we do bring this character to the screen, [we] only wanted to do it when we felt we could do it supreme justice and really showcase the complexity of this character, which frankly we couldn t do in an Iron Man movie because an Iron Man movie is about Iron Man; an Iron Man movie is about Tony Stark. So [Iron Man 3 director] Shane Black, in his film and his script that he co-wrote, came up with this fun twist that we love to this day, and it turned out to be Trevor Slattery. Just because that version wasn t real didn t mean there s not a leader of the Ten Rings organization, and that is who we meet for the first time in Shang-Chi. Joel MearesFeige says he is particularly excited to have cast Hong Kong acting legend Tony Leung Chiu-wai in the role. Tony Leung playing Shang-Chi s father and the leader of the Ten Rings is another pinch-yourself, dream-come-true moment because he s one of the best actors of our time and we re very excited to have him introduced to, I hope, a whole new fan base who might not be aware of his spectacular work that he s done. Check in with Rotten Tomatoes for our full extended video interview with Kevin Feige previewing Phase 4 of the MCU. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters September 3, 2021. She-Hulk is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2022. Thumbnail image: © Marvel Studios and © UniversalOn an Apple device?
