Weekend Box Office Results: Halloween Kills Its Hybrid Release with Million Debut October 17, 2021环球体育app官网(Photo by Syfy; BBC AMERICA; Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection)The past year has offered 12 TV seasons Certified Fresh at 100% — including The Good Place, Cobra Kai, Vida, and Dear White People — of 110 overall that are Certified Fresh. A voracious TV consumer could simply work their way down the list of every Certified Fresh TV show of 2018, or have a look at Rotten Tomatoes staff picks. Our editorial staff has considered the year in television and curated a list of series that may not have met the criteria for Certified Fresh, but nonetheless have captured our imaginations and earned our recommendation anyway. The Expanse 94%What It Is: In the 23rd century, after colonizing the solar system, humans make first contact with an alien race. But rather than meet face-to-whatever, the interaction occurs via the ancient, extinct race s super-advanced A.I. technology, which humanity struggles to understand, communicate with, and ultimately control. Why You Should Watch It: It s been 10 years since Syfy s Battlestar Galactica remake from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) went off the air. The series, which topped our list of the 100 best sci-fi series of all time, won worldwide fans through its gritty space-opera storylines about the human struggle with and against intelligent machines. The BSG world felt lived in, and its characters, both human and machine, presented a seemingly viable space-based future. The Expanse, which Amazon dramatically rescued from cancellation this year, is BSG s very worthy successor in offering a similarly complex sci-fi tale with engaging characters and award-worthy production design. It stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, and Thomas Jane. Why the show hasn t enjoyed the same level of worldwide appeal is one of the series greatest mysteries.Where to Watch: Amazon, Syfy (season 3)Commitment: around 25 hoursPicked By: Debbie Day, TV Features EditorBarry 99%What It Is: In this dry, sometimes unexpectedly somber HBO dark comedy, a professional killer for hire from the Midwest travels to Los Angeles for a hit and stumbles into an acting class, where he not only discovers a community of aspiring actors who welcome him but also begins to imagine a quieter, more normal life. Why You Should Watch It: Thanks to his up-for-anything enthusiasm and easygoing charisma — not to mention his impeccable comedic timing — SNL and Documentary Now alum Bill Hader has earned a sizable fanbase over the years. Those fans were always going to show up for Barry, no matter how good (or bad) it was. Fortunately, the series does a magnificent job balancing Hader s natural boyish charm and his less frequently utilized — but still incredibly effective — proficiency at communicating deep pathos (see: The Skeleton Twins), and he s aided by a stellar ensemble that includes Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Goldberg, and Henry Winkler in one of his finest roles in years.Barry begins with a funny idea, infuses it with real emotional investment, and tosses in a few Oh, sh ! moments just to keep you on your toes. Hader and Winkler have already taken home Emmys for their efforts, and they re both up for Golden Globes next, so now is as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about.Where to Watch: HBOGOCommitment: A little over 4.5 hoursPicked by: Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorBabylon Berlin What It Is: While investigating a pornography ring, Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) discovers a web of conspiracies with huge implications for Germany as a whole. Why You Should Watch It: The idea of the Weimar Republic (the era of German history that spanned from the end of World War I until the rise of the Nazis) has exerted a powerful fascination to this day. It was a time that produced a flowering of artistic expression — from the Bauhaus Movement to The Threepenny Opera, not to mention such cinematic masterworks as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel — and a moment of (relative) tolerance for LGBTQ people. It was also a time of political upheaval, during which a democratic government attempted to hold together a nation struggling with extreme economic insecurity, a time when communists and fascists brawled in the streets. Historians dispute some elements of this narrative as myth, but while Babylon Berlin may be imperfect history, it’s exhilarating entertainment. Its Berlin is all bright neon and dark shadows, decadent parties and sudden outbursts of violence, mysteries and underground plots. We all know the horrible ending to this story, but the characters in Babylon Berlin don’t, and seeing this tumultuous period through the lives of regular people living in the moment gives the whole thing an air of haunting pathos.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: Just shy of 16 hoursPicked By: Tim Ryan, Review Curation ManagerKilling Eve 89%What It Is: This badass British spy thriller follows two female leads — MI5 intelligence officer Eve (Sandra Oh) and international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) — who become obsessed with tracking each other down. Why You Should Watch It: There’s a reason Oh is getting finally getting her long-deserved award recognition for this role: She’s phenomenal as a mild-mannered government employee who heads up a task force to find a female assassin (an also-phenomenal Comer), beginning a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the two women. The BBC America series is also frequently incredibly funny, thanks to sharp writing from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag).Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunesCommitment: About 5.5 hoursPicked By: Jean Bentley, Assistant TV EditorPeaky Blinders 92%What It Is: A raw mob epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), a World War I veteran and leader of the “Peaky Blinders” gang, has started the family business of running a bookie service as well as providing local muscle. Why You Should Watch It: This gritty crime drama will keep you glued to your screen as Tommy tries to build his empire and cement his legacy, all while facing the ever-changing landscape of the new century post-WWI. Guns, gambling, influence, politics, and the streets — this show has it all. Great costume and set design lure viewers into 1919 England to experience the region s post-war trauma. See how far Tommy will go to make a buck and gain power and the collateral damage his family must endure because of it. The series did not offer a new season to U.S. audiences in 2018, but with season 5 coming in 2019, now is a perfect time to binge it.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 24 hoursPicked By: Shane Crocker, Motion Graphic DesignerChilling Adventures of Sabrina 81%What It Is: This comic book–adapted Netflix series from the creator of Riverdale is a dark reimagining of the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch story. Half-witch, half-mortal Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) refuses to sacrifice her human relationships in order to keep her witchy powers and must navigate the boundaries between the mortal and supernatural worlds. Why You Should Watch It: If you’re the kind of witch who wishes Halloween could be a year-long holiday, look no further than Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This show has plenty of campy magic and glamorous gore, but it’s more than flashy spells and Satanic references. Each of Sabrina’s allies — her aunts, cousin Ambrose, human friends, and demonic frenemies — has their own depth and intrigue, which makes their world colorful and worth a deep investment. It’s ultimately a coming-of-age story: Watching Sabrina come into her own, and change minds to do so, is exciting, empowering, and fun. She makes some big mistakes along the way, but who can blame her? She’s only just learning to play with hellfire.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 11 hoursPicked By: Sophie-Marie Prime, USC’s Rotten Tomatoes FellowForever 95%What It Is: Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen star as an ordinary married couple tethered to routine until a freak accident changes everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world. Why You Should Watch It: Much has been written about how Better Call Saul is an ode to the everyday (crime and dubious legal practices notwithstanding). They couldn t be more different, but if you re a fan of BCS, 2018 s Forever will appeal just as well. Created by Alan Yang of Master of None and featuring prolific comedic actors Rudolph and Armisen (do they ever sleep?), the show poses big questions while simultaneously offering tiny details for viewers to chew on long after the final episode of this compact series ends. Avoid spoilers as much as possible before indulging in this series, which somehow marries banality and longing to great effect.Where to Watch: AmazonCommitment: 4 hoursPicked By: Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorSchitt's Creek 93%What It Is: Schitt’s Creek is an amalgam of everything that is good and holy about Canadian entertainment. Why You Should Watch It: Led by Eugene Levy, his gorgeous son Dan, and their beautifully thick eyebrows, Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family, their fall from grace, and their new life in a tiny town surrounded by some of the most wonderful, eccentric, and underrated characters on TV. The series is a rare bird: both funny and heartwarming, while completely insane and totally relatable. In watching, I have laughed so hard I cried, but I have also cried so hard that I had to laugh (specifically, season 4, episode 6). The relationships, the chemistry, the number of wigs Moira owns, Alexis’ vocal fry, and so on — everything about this show is so perfectly curated that you would be hard pressed to find anything else like it on television.Where To Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, VuduCommitment: About 20 hoursPicked By: Zoey Moore, Community ManagerManiac 84%What It Is: Loosely based on a Norwegian show of the same name, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s mindtrip of a miniseries delves into the depths of the human mind with humor, heart, and just the right amount of heady conversations to keep you thinking. Why You Should Watch It: It’s the kind of show that can delicately explore the fragile folds that are the human mind and mental health, while still provoking a fully belly laugh (usually followed by a cathartic cry). Between Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s melancholy chemistry, the singular force of confidently neurotic nature that is Sonoya Mizuno, and Justin Theroux and Sally Field s “special” parent–child relationships (truly something to behold), you feel for each character you meet. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. It may sound kind of heady, but trust us, it’s worth the trip.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 6.5 hoursPicked By: Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation LeadTerrace House: Boys & Girls in the City What It Is: A reality series documenting the real lives of six roommates in Japan. Why You Should Watch It: For those who hate traditional reality TV and want insight into Japanese culture, this is your show. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of love triangles and conflict, but it’s more civilized. It’s the ultimate comfort watch! When you catch up with this season, there’s previous Terrace House series (“Boys and Girls in the City” and “Aloha State”) to enjoy!Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: There are 42 episodes available from the most recent season, all around 30 to 40 minutes each — and it runs through 52! The time commitment is A LOT, but SO worth it.Picked By: Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of ProductionHappy! 84%What It Is: Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Nick (Christopher Meloni), a degenerate hit man and ex cop, gets beaten up by mobsters only to wake up in the hospital seeing a cheerful blue unicorn named Happy (Patton Oswalt). Nick learns Happy is the imaginary friend of a kidnapped little girl named Hailey, who is being held captive by a demented Santa Claus. Happy won’t stop bothering Nick until they find Hailey and bring her to safety. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode. Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. Happy! is not for the faint of heart and is truly made for fans of antiheroes. The casting is also particularly fun, as Meloni is the polar opposite of his Law Order: SVU character. Think: the crazy cook in Wet Hot American Summer, but darker and more twisted.Where to Watch: Netflix, SyfyCommitment: About 6.5 hoursPicked By: Jason Blagman, AssistantElite 97%What It Is: Rich, sexy Spanish teens clash with working-class students at their elite private school, leading to murder. Why You Should Watch It: Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies meets Skins meets Cruel Intentions meets The O.C. meets Veronica Mars meets well, basically every single other of the very best teen dramas for this Spanish-language soap-to-end-all-soaps. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and  will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Pro tip: If you don t speak Spanish, Netflix will usually default to the dubbed version. To avoid that travesty, and make sure you select the European Spanish audio track.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 8 hoursPicked By: BentleyHappy Valley 98%What It Is: A kind of Fargo for the South of England, Happy Valley focuses on policewoman Catherine Cawood’s (Sarah Lancashire) personal and professional lives in the struggling, drug-ridden town for which the series is named. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried. Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. Happy Valley is another Netflix title that didn t release a new season in 2018, but will in 2019, making now a great time to binge.Where to Watch: Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, VuduCommitment: 12 hoursPicked by: Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefPose 98%What It Is: A look inside the underground ball scene in the 1980s, made famous by the documentary Paris Is Burning, in which competitors from various “houses” walk, dance, and/or perform in drag to win big trophies and bigger boosts social stature. Why You Should Watch It: That Pose is genuinely groundbreaking – it features a largely transgender cast, many of whom have not acted professionally before – was reason enough for many to tune in when the Ryan Murphy series premiered on FX in 2018. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. Porter, nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is a series standout, along with Indya Moore, whose complex relationship with married boy from the ’burbs Stan (Evan Peters) will break your heart.Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango Now, FX+, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTubeCommitment: 10 hoursPicked by: Meares

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Marvel hasn t had a new movie in theaters in over a year, but the MCU is definitely still alive and kicking – just in a different venue. WandaVision, the first in a string of highly-anticipated streaming series from the studio, is set to hit Disney+ next week. A select group of TV critics and journalists was invited to take a peek at the first few episodes of the show, and the good news is that reactions on social media are overwhelmingly positive. (Full reviews will drop in the next few days.) Not only are Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) back together again, but the show leans fully into the epic weirdness of it all and gives a wonderful hat tip to the classic American sitcom in the process. Here’s what critics are saying on social media about WandaVision season 1:IS IT WORTH THE WAIT?It is zany, precise, fresh, funny (cue laugh track) counterintuitive. The bigger picture will be revealed (we only get glimpses so far that all isn t right in Westview) but I m in no rush to leave town. – Nikki Novak, FandangoThe reason the #MCU is king of the hill is @Kevfeige’s amazing leadership and willingness to take risks like what you ll see in Wandavision . – Steven Weintraub, ColliderA terrific blend of big strangeness and aching heart. – Alex Biese, USA TodayThis show is banana pants crazy in the best way possible! – Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyHOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK IN THE MCU?(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Weird, fun, and simply amazing, it feels so very good to be back in the MCU! – Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyMarvel is really going wild with its, well, vision. – Tanzim Pardiwalla, Mashable India#WandaVision is a weird way to return to the MCU (remember, it was MEANT to be the fourth project of of Phase 4) and will take some adjustment for those seeking a traditional superhero story, but I think it will grab people more and more if they accept it’s doing its own thing. – Eric Goldman, FandomDOES IT WORK AS A CELEBRATION OF CLASSIC SITCOMS?(Photo by © Marvel Studios)It is a blast to watch. It is so committed to the sitcom structure of story telling that it feels like a bold risk but it pays off and builds a mystery. – Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comIt is not a parody or snarky take on classic sitcoms. It’s the most respectful, sincere celebration of that art form that I’ve seen . Ever? – Brett White, DeciderIt’s great, weird, loaded with sitcom tropes and, what I wasn’t expecting, kinda scary. I’m dying for more. – Chris Hayner, GameSpotFans of vintage sitcoms will adore its commitment to the details, while still being genuinely funny. – Peter Sciretta, SlashFilmAlso — and I cannot stress this enough — hooray for half hour (more or less) episodes! Storytelling confident enough to be concise is one of my favorite things. – Alex Biese, USA TodayHOW ARE PAUL BETTANY AND ELIZABETH OLSEN?Aaron PrunerPaul Bettany absolutely deserves to be submitted for Best Actor in a Comedy at every awards ceremony.– Brett White, DeciderBettany is especially having a good time it shows. – Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comElizabeth Olsen’s performance is truly outstanding and one of those “Man, if awards shows weren t snobby about superhero stuff, she would likely get an Emmy nomination” situations. – Eric Goldman, FandomElizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have never been better as these characters and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here. – Alex Biese, USA TodayALL THE EMMYS FOR ELIZABETH OLSEN IN #WandaVision – Ash Crossan, ET OnlineThe first two episodes of WandaVision will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, January 15. 8.11.0 6月喜迎Behind the Zero(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The story behind the notorious adaptation of Martin Amis’ 1989 novel London Fields is infinitely juicier and more dramatic than the one on-screen, but that’s setting the bar exceedingly low. It s a lurid, salacious show-business melodrama involving a novel overflowing with sex and murder and the legal intrigue it inspired when an attempt was made to adapt it. The latter pitted a director eager to take his name off a picture he felt no longer represented his vision against producers he accused of adding incendiary elements against his will and a glamorous movie star couple (Johnny Depp and Amber Heard) whose marriage would explode publicly in a flurry of abuse allegations in the long years between the time London Fields was made and when it was finally released. The movie was supposed to screen at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival until director Matthew Cullen, a music video hotshot, sued the producers for non-payment and failure to allow the promised creative control. Amber Heard, meanwhile, was sued by producers for million for failing to promote the film and publicly siding with Cullen. Heard, in turn, counter-sued, alleging that the producers used a body double to get around a nudity clause in her contract.Cullen, Heard, and several of the male leads all objected to a producer adding postmodern elements into the film, including 9/11 imagery and pornographic sequences that suggested an Asylum knock-off of the orgy scenes in Eyes Wide Shut. For years, the movie existed in a state of creative and legal limbo as different cuts were produced and legal issues were very publicly hashed out, giving the movie the kind of terrible publicity that would sink a film even if it was not as staggeringly awful as London Fields is.London Fields was finally released in 2018 to universally withering reviews (including the notorious zero rating here) and near-record box-office lows, grossing a paltry 9,000 over its opening weekend, the worst tally for a film released in over 600 theaters since 2008’s Proud American. By that time, Heard and Depp, who has an uncredited role as a peacocking dandy of a loan shark/darts champion, had gone through an ugly, public divorce that cast an ominous shadow over the already troubled film. How toxic is London Fields? Director Matthew Cullen told The Hollywood Reporter of the movie’s seething pans, I ve read the reviews. I agree with them. The Zero(Photo by Paladin)Heard stars in London Fields as Nicola Six. She’s less an unusually sexy woman than sex incarnate, a black widow of a seductress who enjoys toying mercilessly with the schmucks caught up in her web before going in for the kill. She’s a ridiculous cartoon of heavy-breathing, vampish old-school sexuality. She’s a dame to kill for, a sex bomb with the ability to reduce grown men to drooling children. She s Jessica Rabbit if she really were bad, not just drawn that way. But Nicola has another gift as well: she’s clairvoyant, albeit only to the degree that the movie needs her to be at any moment she can see far enough into the future to know that she will be murdered by one of three men unhealthily obsessed with her.First up is a rail-thin, dead-eyed Billy Bob Thornton as Sam Young, our hard-boiled narrator, a world-weary failed writer with a dark secret involving his own imminent death. Sam lucks into a decidedly one-sided apartment swap with Mark Asprey (Jason Isaacs), an obscenely successful hack writer  who lives in the same posh London building as Nicola.Sam knows that Nicola is going to die, violently, in ostensibly dramatic fashion. He believes he can get a best-seller out of lightly fictionalizing his own British misadventures, but only if he’s actually there to watch the death happen. So the scribe makes Nicola a rather curious proposal: he wants permission to be there during her demise for creative and artistic reasons, of course, in addition to a desire to make loads of money. Nicola grants it, seemingly without giving the matter any consideration.(Photo by Paladin)Thornton is uncharacteristically terrible as one of the most exhausted cliches in fiction: the desperate writer who functions as the all-powerful God of the world they’ve created but who can’t begin to figure out the complexities of real life. Thornton possesses extraordinary charisma in the right roles, and he s famously an award-winning screenwriter in real life, but he s a thin, grey mist of a man here, a burnt out “intellectual” who whispers wall-to-wall narration full of nuggets of unbearable pretension like, “Love is blind, but it makes you see the blind man. It makes you search him out with eyes of love.”Then there’s Keith Talent (Jim Sturgess), a right proper soccer hooligan/Andy Capp type who seems to have staggered in drunkenly from a lesser Guy Ritchie crime comedy. He’s a broad caricature of a boorish, ignorant working-class bloke what enjoys downing a pint or twelve at the pub, watching footie with his mates, and shagging fit birds. Nicola is, of course, the fittest of fit birds. She cannot enter a man’s life without completely overtaking it, and Keith’s all-consuming desire to shag Nicola takes precedence over everything.Last and certainly least in the three-way contest to either win Nicola’s heart and/or murder her is Guy Clinch (Theo James). Guy has the manners, breeding, and expensive attire of a proper member of the educated bourgeoisie, but Nicola’s teasing manipulation transforms him into a preposterously gullible half-wit.For example, Nicola enlists Guy s help to locate two desperate people known only as Enola Gay and Little Boy the names, of course, of the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and the bomb itself. In a more knowing film, that would qualify as a sly joke about the way Guy’s desire for Nicola clouds his judgement and renders him hopeless against even the most transparent of ruses. Instead, London Fields plays this development completely straight, and Guy learns the true nature of Enola Gay and Little Boy via a book and erupts with rage at Nicola’s trickery. In order for the film s idiotic plot to work, everyone other than Nicola has to be as stupid as the filmmakers assume the audience is.At the core of London Fields’ staggering awfulness lies a fundamental confusion about the nature of its material. Is this a parody of the heavy-breathing, sex-saturated, melodramatic, viciously misogynistic cliches of erotic thrillers, neo-Noir, and crime fiction? Or is it a straightforward, moody, pretentious exploration of sex and death and art and destiny?(Photo by Paladin)The film is at its best when it embraces the trashy, delirious comedy lurking just under the surface, like Keith dancing for joy in the rain to Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” after receiving, you guessed it money for nothing from Nicola. Or the fact that the flamboyant world of professional darts figures so prominently in the plot.Speaking of which, Depp overacts with trademark brazenness here in a hammy star turn as a big shot in the overlapping worlds of darts and organized crime. As is almost invariably the case with late-period Depp, ninety percent of the character comes through baroque sartorial choices. He is essentially nothing more than a walking wardrobe here, and at this point, encouraging Depp to overact is a recipe for disaster. For Nicola and Sam, death lurks in the very near future, so at least they get to leave this hell eventually, and in the meantime, they ve got something to do. They’re lucky in that respect. In the most groan-inducing self-referential touch in a meta-narrative positively teeming with them, Nicola, who could only ever be a fictional character (an obscenely, broadly drawn one at that) indignantly tells Sam, “I’m not one of your one dimensional characters, Sam.” That’s true only in the sense that Nicola would need to be fleshed out further to qualify even as one-dimensional.In an even clumsier reference to the characters in this appalling fiction knowing, on some level, that they are characters in a very bad movie, Sam tells Nicola, “I’m pretty worried that the critics are going to call you a male fantasy figure.”The critics would call her, and the movie, much worse. Even the film s own director did.Final Verdict(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Believe the hype! London Fields is an impressively idiotic insult to the noble, shadow-laden legacy of classic film noir and its contemporary bastardization, the neo-noir. It seldom rises even to the level of passable neo-noir: it’s closer to a heavy-breathing “erotic” thriller, the kind that fills Cinemax’s nighttime programming, albeit with an inexplicably prestigious, star-studded cast and an unlikely literary pedigree.London Fields’ path to the big screen was long, complicated, and fraught, but it might have worked out better for everyone involved, particularly Heard, if this boondoggle had never been released at all.Nathan Rabin is the author of six books and the proprietor of Nathan Rabin’s Happy Place.Follow Nathan on Twitter: @NathanRabin
Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% The Japanese cyberpunk manga Battle Angel Alita began publication back in 1990, and when James Cameron got wind of it (via Guillermo del Toro, no less), he became instantly fascinated by it and began development on it as a passion project. Ultimately, after years of delays, Cameron found himself occupied by Avatar and its sequels, so he handed the reins over to Robert Rodriguez. The film centers on a scientist (Christoph Waltz) who discovers a deactivated cyborg (played in motion-capture by Rosa Salazar) in a junkyard and gives her a new body, only to realize her previous function was much more lethal. Alita: Battle Angel has impressed critics with its groundbreaking, immersive special effects par for the course with any film produced by James Cameron but it takes some of its narrative cues from better films that have come before. It s an eye-popping theater experience, to be sure, and if that s what you re looking for, Alita delivers enough entertainment value to keep you in your seat. Just don t expect to be blown away or even particularly engaged by its story.

tar in the film as the central hero, Nathan Drake, and it officially went into production in early 2020. It lands here after several shifts in the release schedule; let s hope it stays here. Ambulance (2022) Directed by: Michael BayStarring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eiza Gonzalez, Garret DillahuntOpening on: February 18, 2022Michael Bay tones down his blockbuster tendencies just a bit (presumably) for this smaller-scale thriller about a pair of thieves who unknowingly rob an ambulance carrying a paramedic and a patient in critical condition. This remake of a Danish film has been in development since 2015, but filming finally got underway in January of 2021.
a novels). Something changed, however, when Taika Waititi (Thor: Raganrok, 93% Certified Fresh) signed on with Warner Bros. and producer Leonardo DiCaprio for Akira instead. The bad news, however, is that Waititi s fans are still going to have to wait almost two years for Akira, because the film is now scheduled for release on May 21, 2021. Waititi s film will reportedly be adapted directly from Katsuhiro Otomo s Akira manga volumes, and will not be a shot-by-shot remake of the anime. In related news, both Waititi and Netflix dropped out this week of the Bubbles biopic about the life of Michael Jackson s pet chimpanzee.4. The First Stars Movie Based On a Video Game is In Development(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Paramount Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Ever since we first heard that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies, there has been speculation that their films would be set in the Old Republic setting, some 3,600 years before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This week brought an unexpected wrinkle to that theory with the news that a movie based on the popular video game franchise Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is now in active development (separate from Benioff/Weiss). Instead, the KOTOR movie is being adapted by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, whose produced filmography includes Alita: Battle Angel, Martin Scorsese s Shutter Island, and the Netflix science-fiction series Altered Carbon. As with the two other Star Wars projects that Benioff/Weiss and Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) are working on separately, the Knights of the Old Republic movie is described as being the first of a potential trilogy. Kalogridis also now has the distinction of being the first female screenwriter to work on a Star Wars movie since Leigh Brackett cowrote The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. In related news, we learned more this week about Keri Russell s character in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as more about the Knights of Ren.5. Chip N Dale Live-Action Film, Courtesy of the Lonely Island(Photo by @ Buena Vista Television)With Disney now done with Dumbo and Aladdin, The Lion King coming this summer, and Mulan and Cruella coming in 2020, it’s starting to look like they’ll run out of classic animated movies to adapt as live-action films by the middle of the coming decade. Disney, however, might be way ahead of us, as this week brought news that suggests their next steps could involve adapting some of their popular animated TV series as well. Walt Disney Pictures has begun development of a live-action/CGI hybrid adaptation of the studio s popular Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers TV series. The original series ran for a relatively brief amount of time on The Disney Channel (1989 to 1990), but it then entered syndication, where it arguably left a bigger impact and found a larger audience. Akiva Schaffer, of the musical comedy team Lonely Island (along with Andy Samberg), will direct the Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie, which will reportedly have a meta angle that s not an origin story. It s not yet known if Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers will debut on the Disney+ streaming service or whether it will receive a full theatrical release.6. Michael Peña Might Get to Recap What Happens in The Tom Jerry MovieJoel MearesAfter he provided some of the funniest scenes in the two Ant-Man movies, many fans were disappointed to find that Michael Peña’s Luis wasn t one of the supporting characters who returned for Avengers: Endgame (maybe he was hanging out with Darcy and Goose). That was especially disappointing given that we still haven t heard of active development for a third Ant-Man movie yet either. Whatever s causing Marvel Studios to drag its feet on that might be to Warner Bros. s advantage, because that studio has cast Michael Peña as one of the human leads in their upcoming Tom Jerry movie (April 16, 2021). Chloë Grace Moretz will be the lead character, as a new employee at an elegant hotel where Peña s character is the deputy general manager, and an alley cat named Tom is enlisted to take care of a pesky mouse named Jerry. Tom and Jerry will be mute, as they were in most of their classic cartoon short films.7. Slow Your Roll, Sonic the Hedgehog: Redesign Needs a Few More MonthsJoel MearesIn a rare example of people complaining about a movie online actually having an immediate impact, earlier this month, The Weekly Ketchup reported that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting a CGI redesign for his upcoming movie following negative reactions to the first trailer. People quickly speculated that such a rework would probably require more time, and that proved to be a correct guess as this week Paramount Pictures pushed the release back from November 8, 2019 to Valentine s Day, 2020 (up against the third Kingsman movie). Jim Carrey is expected to look pretty much exactly the same as Doctor Robotnik.Rotten Ideas2. This Week in Remakes Pt. 1: Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson May Be Grumpy Old Men(Photo by @ Summit Entertainment, @ DreamWorks)Although Samuel L. Jackson did have small roles in both Coming to America and the comedy concert film Eddie Murphy: Raw, he s never costarred with Eddie Murphy in the last 25 years or so, the era in which Samuel L. Jackson is a mega star. If this week s news goes anywhere, that may change in the next few years, as both actors are now being named as the possible leads in the same film. That movie would be a remake of 1993 s Grumpy Old Men (63% Fresh), starring Jack Lemmon (then 68) and Walter Matthau (then 73). Eddie Murphy (currently 58) is already attached to star in this remake, and Samuel L. Jackson (currently 70) is reportedly circling the project. Unfortunately, the Grumpy Old Men remake currently looks like a Rotten Idea due to the multitude of Rotten Tomatometer scores for the remake s director, Tim Story. But it could be time for a turnaround.1. This Week in Remakes Pt. 2: Mel Gibson s The Wild Bunch(Photo by Patrick Redmond / © Vertical Entertainment )There s a common notion that the best candidates for remakes are films that were flawed in the first place. The idea is that revisiting movies that could genuinely be improved makes more sense than revisiting something that is generally considered to have been done right the first time. For example, 1939 s The Wizard of Oz is itself a remake (and not even the first one), following silent films that lacked the music that made it a classic. So, when a movie like 1969 s The Wild Bunch has a 94% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score and a spot on various Best Movies of All Time lists, you d think no one would ever consider remaking it. Those people would not be Mel Gibson. Warner Bros. is preparing exactly such a remake to be directed by Gibson, and negotiations have begun with three major stars. The potential stars for The Wild Bunch remake include Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), and fresh off HBO s Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage.Like this? And – as expected – Nomadland has won Best Picture on a night when the statuettes were split between a number of films, with no single movie dominating. Nomadland went on to win a total of three awards (more on that below) to lead all films, while Ma Rainey s Black Bottom, Mank, Sound of Metal, Judas and the Black Messiah, and The Father, all tied with two trophies apiece. The latter also managed arguably the biggest upset of the night, with star Anthony Hopkins taking the Best Actor award over the late Chadwick Boseman, who many had pegged as the front runner for his work in Ma Rainey s Black Bottom.History was made on multiple fronts, with the first ever wins for Black and Hispanic creatives in the Makeup and Hairstyling category, and Chloé Zhao becoming the first woman of Asian descent – and only second woman ever – to win Best Director, for Nomadland. Meanwhile, Yuh-jung Youn, who plays an incorrigible grandmother in Minari, became the first South Korean woman to win Best Supporting Actress and delivered an acceptance speech for the ages.In two of the night s most memorable moments, Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah, while Another Round was named Best International Feature Film, allowing director Thomas Vinterberg to pay moving tribute to his late daughter.Recommended: Biggest Moments of the 2021 Academy AwardsRecommended: 2021 Oscars Red Carpet Photo Gallery Recommended: Rotten Tomatoes Predicts the 2021 Oscar Winners!Recommended: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2021 Oscar NominationsRecommended: All the Winners of the 2020 Golden Tomato Awards The 93rd Academy Awards aired live on ABC on April 25, 2021.Full List Of Winners: 93rd Academy AwardsBest Picture

(Photo by © Lucasfilm Ltd, Twentieth Century Fox)The arrival of Star Wars: The Bad Batch on May 4 is another step in Star Wars’s growing presence on Disney+. With its offerings on the streamer previously confined to The Mandalorian and the extant feature films and animated series, Lucasfilm stunned fans and investors last December with an ambitious plan to produce as many as 10 television series for Disney+ in the next decade. In addition to its Disney+ roster, the company also intends to make at least three features by 2027.So yes, there is a ton of new Star Wars movies and new Star Wars series flying our way.Of course, fans of Star Wars media already knew the fictional galaxy could fuel hundreds of film and shows. They also hope the expansion of Star Wars content means there will be room for Jedi Knight protagonist Kyle Katarn to re-enter the canon. And canonicity is a big deal for Star Wars. When Disney first bought Lucasfilm, they declared all previous Star Wars comics, novels, games, and cartoons (except for the long-running Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as non-canon legends of the Star Wars galaxy. The move was made to offer maximum freedom to the filmmakers involved in the Sequel Trilogy (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker), but it didn t take long for Legends characters and ideas to seep back into programs like Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian. And, as you will see in this guide to Star Wars’s streaming and theatrical future below, those senses of canon and continuity are as important to the galaxy far, far away as the Force itself. Here we ve gathered everything we know about every Star Wars movie and series coming to streaming and theaters in the next few years, and broken down how they fit into the emerging Star Wars galaxy. Tell us which new Star Wars projects you re most excited about in the comments.Disney+ SeriesThe Book Of Boba Fett(Photo by © Lucasfilm Ltd.)Premiere Date: December 2021What We Know: Announced in the closing moments of The Mandalorian’s second season last winter, the program will follow Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) as he reclaims his place in the galactic underworld. Whether or not the the series begins from the scene of him taking over Jabba the Hutt’s old palace, which we saw in The Mandalorian, remains to be seen. Along for the ride is Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), who owes a debt to Fett and whose own story seems to be spread across the various Star Wars shows – she is also scheduled to make an appearance on The Bad Batch (with Wen providing her voice). Behind the camera, El Mariachi director Robert Rodriguez – who directed Fett s full return to Star Wars in a second-season Mandalorian episode – joins executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as an Executive Producer and creative force in the story. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the series will debut in December, although it is possible the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may delay that plan. That said, filming began in November 2020 and seems to have occurred without incident. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As with The Mandalorian, the series will continue to develop the post-Empire galaxy in the era between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. But by focusing its gaze on the criminals, it gets to tell a wholly new story. Although, it is easy to imagine Fett’s old brigade of bounty hunters might stop by to wish him well on his new endeavor.Star Wars Visions(Photo by Lucasfilm Ltd.)Premiere Date: 2021What We Know: The 10-episode anthology series will feature leading Japanese anime studios as they bring a new spin to Star Wars locations and characters. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As this is an anthology concerned with the distinctive styles of the participating animation studios, we’re not sure how it fits or even if it will be canon. With Disney+ uploading non-canon content like the Ewoks TV movies and Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2-D Clone Wars series in recent days, there is room for Visions to ruminate on the ideas of Star Wars without being bound to the state of the galaxy or Lucasfilm s overall plans for ongoing stories. Although, with one of the episodes inspiring author Emma Mieko Candon s upcoming novel, Star Wars Visions: Ronin, the program may yet prove to be a vital part of Star Wars. The Mandalorian: Season 3(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved.)Premiere Date: Early 2022What We Know: Reportedly beginning production in early April, the program will begin a new story as Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) deals with the repercussions of becoming the heir apparent to the throne of Mandalore. Presumably, Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) will not be too thrilled about that development, but will it lead to them fighting for the Darksaber or hashing out some sort of accord? Also, will Djarin finally accept that he must help liberate the planet from the Imperial Remnant? Meanwhile, Grogu begins his training with Luke Skywalker. Although, it is easy to imagine circumstances will lead the Child back to Djarin. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As the flagship show, The Mandalorian still sets the pace in the post-ROTJ galaxy. With Imperial Remnants still working towards some sort of plan to push back the New Republic – and the New Republic trying to create order in the generally lawless Outer Rim – the stage will eventually be set for the weakened Republic glimpsed in the Sequel Trilogy.Andor(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Premiere Date: 2022What We Know: One of two programs announced for Disney+ before the platform launched – the other being The Mandalorian – Andor has been long in the planning. Finally beginning production in November of 2020, the 12-episode series will star Diego Luna as his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story character, Cassian Andor, in a story set five years before the events of the film. Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller are along for the adventure, as is Genevieve O Reilly as Mon Montha, a key figure in the Rebel Alliance that the actor has played in Star Wars media since a scene cut from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. And although Alan Tudyk was originally meant to reprise his role as K-2SO, the actor revealed in January of 2021 that the droid will not appear in the first season. The series was originally developed by Jared Bush, but Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy is credited as creator. He also serves as showrunner, replacing The Americans’ Stephen Schiff, although his plan to direct the first three episodes was curtailed by the pandemic. Toby Haynes picked up the director chores alongside Ben Caron and Susanna White. Joining Gilroy in the writers’ room is his brother, Dan Gilroy, and House of Cards’ Beau Willimon. Schiff is also still onboard as an episode writer. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Thanks to its place in the timeline – five or so years before the original Star Wars – the program has the opportunity to expose hidden depths within the Rebel Alliance which could set up conflicts in the post-ROTJ era. Also, it could be a chance to establish Star Wars Rebels characters in live action while telling its own story of intrigue and suspense.Obi-Wan Kenobi(Photo by Industrial Light Magic/Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation/Courtesy Everett Collection)Premiere Date: 2022What We Know: Growing out of an abandoned Star Wars Story film, the series sees Ewan McGregor return as Obi-Wan Kenobi, the loyal Jedi sent into exile on Tatooine following the conclusion of the Clone Wars and the Old Republic’s descent into Empire. The cast also includes Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O Shea Jackson Jr., Moses Ingram, Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, and Maya Erskine. Edgerton and Piesse reprise their Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clone roles as Owen Lars and Beru Whitsun, although they now serve as guardians to a roughly ten-year-old Luke Skywalker. Also set to return: Prequel Trilogy star Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. The Mandalorian’s Deborah Chow serves as director and executive producer alongside Kennedy, McGregor, and Tracey Seaward. Joby Harold takes over writing duties from Hossein Amini, who left the project sometime in early 2020. Production on the six-episode limited series is reportedly underway right now.How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Set 10 years prior to the original Star Wars film and focusing on a time when everyone presumed Obi-Wan was just meditating in the desert and waiting for Luke to grow up, it may offer some further insights into characters seen on The Book of Boba Fett or glimpsed on The Mandalorian’s various trips to Tatooine. But for longtime fans, the chance to see Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru again may be the program’s biggest gift.Ahsoka(Photo by (c) 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. TM. All Rights Reserved)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: After her debut in The Mandalorian s second season, Rosario Dawson returns as the live-action version of the Star Wars: Clone Wars fan-favorite character. Although no plot details are as yet available, fans assume the series will pick up from Rebels closing moments with Ahsoka continuing her search for the long-missing Ezra Bridger. That said, it is always possible that journey has ended and Ahsoka s only mission is to track down Grand Admiral Thrawn. It is currently unclear how quickly the series will go into production or who will actually run the program. But considering Filoni’s long association with the character, the program may serve as his first live-action production as showrunner. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: In continuing Ahsoka’s story – and possibly resolving Ezra’s – the program serves as both a cap to her animated adventures and the beginning of a new era for the character. As it happens, her voice is heard toward the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, suggesting she is one with the Force by Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) time. Answering how she got there may be part of the show’s mission statement, but we’ll be quite happy if it takes another 10 years to reveal how her physical form meets its final end.Rangers of the New Republic(Photo by © Lucasfilm Ltd.)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: A third new series from Favreau and Filoni – the others being The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka will follow a group of New Republic soldiers in the same era as The Mandalorian. While Kennedy offered few details about this show during a Disney Investor Day presentation in December of 2020, she mentioned it will cross over with other stories from The Mandalorian and Ahsoka to culminate in an “event” at some point in the future. An Avengers-style crossover would be a new thing for Star Wars, so it will be interesting to see how this develops. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As the program is the most mysterious, the crossover seems to be the most tantalizing element. Will the liberation of Mandalore be saved for it? Or will a larger skirmish with the Imperial Remnant prove to be its focus? Also, considering the state of the galaxy in the Sequel Trilogy, did the Rangers mission fail? Definitely a question worth exploring. The Acolyte(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: The long-in-the-works project from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland and Lucasfilm story executive Rayne Roberts will focus on a character during the final days of the High Republic – a period roughly a century before the Skywalker Saga – who comes to know shadowy secrets and emerging Dark Side powers. The mystery/thriller series will also reportedly feature a martial arts element, so fans of the Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi video game may finally get a chance to be recognized for their loyalty. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: The High Republic is the current focus of Lucasfilm’s publishing initiatives, so the series will presumably import some of its recently introduced novel and comic book characters to the streaming screen. Also, as the era is a fresh period in Star Wars history, it has the room to create new locales and situations free of the Skywalker Saga or even the galaxy as mapped by Favreau and Filoni.Lando(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: Dear White People’s Justin Simien is developing a limited series devoted to charismatic card player and scoundrel Lando Calrissian. While it is unclear who will play the title role, a teaser video featuring Lando’s unblemished Millennium Falcon shown during the 2020 Investor Day presentation suggests it will go back to the days before he met Han Solo. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: That all depends on when it takes place. A focus on the older Lando (played by Billy Dee Williams) could follow up on his promise to help Jannah (Naomi Ackie) find her people and offer us the first glimpse of the galaxy following the destruction of the New Republic and the First Order. A series primarily concerned with young Lando (played by Donald Glover) would be less concerned with lore and, potentially, revel in the fun of being a scoundrel. And, then, of course, the program could be about both things at once – a storytelling device Star Wars has yet to really employ in its live-action efforts.MoviesStar Wars: Rogue Squadron(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)Release Date: December 22, 2023What We Know: First revealed at the 2020 Investor Day presentation, Rogue Squadron will be directed by Wonder Woman s Patty Jenkins and focus on a new generation of X-Wing pilots. In a video posted to her Twitter account, Jenkins revealed the story is personal as her father was a fighter pilot who lost his life in service to his country. She also subsequently clarified that the film will honor the Rogue Squadron video games and novels even as it flies off in its own direction. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: That all depends on when the film takes place. For the moment, we re going to presume Star Wars feature films will continue to move forward from the time of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the new Rogue Squadron forms to aid whatever government replaces the New Republic. That means characters from the Sequel Trilogy like Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) could show up, but don t rule out another big time-jump to set the film apart from the Skywalker Saga entirely.Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars Film(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel)Release Date: 2025 (Our Guess)What We Know: Although the industry knew about Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi s Star Wars project for some time, Kennedy finally commented on it in December 2020, saying his approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and unique.   She also pointed to his talent – which is evident in his films – and his sense of humor as two strengths which will set Waititi s project apart from other Star Wars endeavors. Presumably, it will fill the Star Wars feature film slot Disney is currently holding for 2025; considering he is currently working with Disney on Thor: Love and Thunder for a February, 2022 release, the timing should work out.How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Like Jenkins s film, it all depends on when it is set. With thousands of years of lore available to explore, Waititi could do just about anything he wants – from a story set on the world where sentient creatures first felt the Force to a film set entirely in Ackmena s (Beatrice Arthur) cantina from The Star Wars Holiday Special. And as Ragnarok proved, he can make just about any Star Wars setting a place of laughs, jeopardy, and thrills.Rian Johnson s Star Wars Trilogy: Episode I(Photo by David James/ © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Lucasfilm Ltd. /Courtesy Everett Collection)Release Date: 2027 (Our Guess)What We Know: First announced in 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is expected to spearhead a new trilogy sometime in the next decade – writing and directing the first film himself. And although he reportedly reaffirmed his involvement as recently as this past February, no additional details are known. Currently, the director is expected to fast-track two sequels to his hit film Knives Out after Netflix paid almost half a billion dollars for the chance to stream them. Of course, that may not prevent his Star Wars trilogy from going forward as Lucasfilm seems happy to wait for him and build out different regions of the galaxy in the interim. Whether he ll be done telling Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) mysteries in time to make a film to fill the 2027 release date Disney has mapped out for a Star Wars film is anyone s guess. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Right now, it doesn t. It s just an agreement to make a series of movies, and as seen with Lucasfilm s quick decision to cancel the Star Wars Story anthology of films in wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story s underperformance, that deal could dissolve at any moment. See also: the company s about-face regarding a series of films to be developed by Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.A Droid Story(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: As Kennedy described at the 2020 Investor Day presentation, the only Star Wars TV movie currently on the Disney+ roster will be an “epic journey” featuring a new hero guided by Star Wars most famous droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Although the Lucasfilm president was light on story details, she did mention the project will be a chance for the company’s animation and live-action special effects groups to stretch their expertise to its limits. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Like Visions, the film may also be freed from canon. At the same time, that new hero whom Artoo and Threepio guide could become part of Patty Jenkins s upcoming Star Wars: Rogue Squadron feature, a subsequent film, or, perhaps, a story set after well after Rey put an end to Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).Untitled Kevin Feige Star Wars Film(Photo by Albert L. Ortega/WireImage)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Word first broke in 2019 that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was involved in developing a Star Wars film with Kennedy. At the time, Walt Disney Studios Co-Chairman Alan Horn said it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together. Like the first episode of the Johnson trilogy, it could end up becoming the Star Wars feature Disney releases in 2027. Then again, Feige s calendar is much busier than Johnson s and he ll likely be deep into planing Phase 6 or 7 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the time the film would need to be shooting to meet that release date. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Not even Baskin-Robbins knows how it will fit into the rest of Lucasfilm s plans for Star Wars.Untitled J.D. Dillard Star Wars Project(Photo by Leon Bennett/WireImage)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sleight director J.D. Dillard and Marvel TV writer Matt Owens (Luke Cage) are developing some sort of Star Wars project for Lucasfilm. In the year since the story first broke, though, no additional details have come to light. And even at the time of reporting, it was unclear if the project would be a Disney+ series, TV movie, or feature film. That ambiguity makes it an even more tenuous project than Johnson s trilogy. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Curiously, Dillard made a brief appearance in The Rise of Skywalker as FN-1226, one of the stormtroopers Rey mindtricks during Chewbacca s (Joonas Suotamo) rescue. Whether or not this would play into his project is unknown, but it does remind us that many First Order soldiers, stolen from their parents at a young age and conditioned to serve First Order interests, still deserve to be liberated. Well, the ones who survived the Battle of Exegol, anyway.Which Star Wars projects are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments. On an Apple device?
