Played by Alice Eve in Fellowes’ adaptation of his own novel, Susan is a ladder-climber who is able to suss out a situation with a twitching cat-like eye for how it will best benefit her. Married to the entitled and uninspiring Oliver Trenchard (Richard Goulding), Susan yearns for any kind of excitement or purpose and considers any slight – such as her mother-in-law Anne (Tamsin Greig) neglecting to make her a plus-one at the afternoon tea hosted by a lady of higher standing – to be the utmost form of disrespect.Her role in the lavish period-set series is a different sort for Eve, who is perhaps better known to U.S. audiences for Starter for 10, Men in Black III, Star Trek Into Darkness, and, most recently, Bombshell.Ahead of Belgravia’s premiere this Sunday on Epix, we chatted with the UK-based Eve about playing Susan and what programs she watches when she’s not causing trouble in 19th-century London.(Photo by Channel 4)What are you watching?So, you know this is a rocky time. I find that, to go to sleep, one likes to be soothed. And, fittingly or not, I find myself being soothed by two shows. I’m certainly a fan of Maisel, which is over on Amazon. I have to say, in terms of my viewing habits, I’m much more in tune with the Criterion Collection on iTunes and purchase Ingmar Bergman movies, so I don’t really spend too much time on repeating shows. But I do still enjoy Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee [on Netflix]. When it comes to shows, I like to lighten my tone. With movies, I like to be quite serious.(Photo by HBO)What is coming soon that you can’t wait to see? I was enjoying that Al Pacino show that he did on Amazon, Hunters. I’m really looking forward to my friend Zoe Kazan’s new HBO show, The Plot Against America, when it comes here.(Photo by Carnival Films)Whitney Friedlander for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you get cast in this project and were you a big fan of Julian Fellowes’ work before this?I got a letter from the producers and they said, Would you like to do it? That was it.I was a big fan of Gosford Park, so I knew Julian from his work on that. And when I read the book for this, Belgravia, when they offered it to me, I then was able to sit down and really enjoy Downton and enjoy the comfort that it gives as a show.So much of how you play Susan is in subtlety, like the way she scans a room at a party or makes a silent commentary about her in-laws. How did you decide how to do this?That s definitely an outside-in thing, and I definitely inhabited Susan from the inside-out. And I think that s just how she manifested. The thing about the 19th century was [that] everything was observed so intricately. Every movement and every glance and every gesture was meant so much was so loaded; for example, the etiquette teacher explained to us that when we were having dinner, you couldn t touch your hair, you couldn t touch your face, you couldn t do something with your napkin, you couldn t lift your forks too high or your knife too high, you couldn t put your elbow on the table because everything, kind of, was mannered and was a way of expressing something. And so there was very limited movement, and there was very limited gesture. So she kind of found her personality, I guess, as you noticed, in like a smaller space.(Photo by Carnival Films)How much of these mannerisms did you know already? Americans always think that all British people know these etiquette guidelines.Well, I think some of it is intrinsic. I think there is definitely like a cultural understanding of the history and the history of repression and the history of expression. And then I think a lot is learned. I mean, I really enjoyed exploring.I went to Oxford, but certainly people who go to RADA — to the Royal Academy — to study drama, they re really good. They go through like a course in what sound was like and of course in walking … and so there is a way to study it. But I learned it through the etiquette teachers and through reading.How much did you know about this time in British history anyway?I read a lot around it when I started the job, but also in my course at Oxford, we did from 1832 to the present day, which was modern literature. And so that s Queen Victoria s realm. She came to the throne in 1832 … so I certainly had an idea of her influence on literature of the time and the [Alfred] Tennyson, the [Robert] Browning the heavy, kind of elegiac. I had an understanding of the Gothic nature of the architecture, but, I think in terms of society, I learned that since I got the job.(Photo by Carnival Films)Susan has more depth than her meddling ways; for instance, she and Oliver don’t have children. She tells her mother-in-law at one point that she does want them. Is she lying? It’s hard to know if we want to trust her.I certainly trusted her when I played her, but I think that she wants a child. You could maybe judge her motivations for wanting a child, but I think she does want one. I think maybe she is bored. And I think that there s very little to do for her, because she s not allowed to integrate into society and, therefore, kind of conduct relationships. And she can t go anywhere without her husband, so she doesn t have entertainment.As Julian said, himself, to me, the only ways for women at the time to divert themselves were society and children. So, she had sort of access to neither, but I also think her biological clock was kind of ticking.(Photo by Epix/Carnival Films)Much like with Downton, a lot of what happens on Belgravia involves how much the elite can trust their support staff — even when it comes to getting dressed or undressed.This was a long conversation that we had running through the whole of the show: the reality of a woman getting dressed on her own … I mean, they couldn t use the restroom on their own. It was Selfridges, the department store, that had the first female restroom [around when] clothes started to change. Because you would need assistance to even pee. So, it’s a big one.I know you’ve appeared in a few adaptations like the Amazon miniseries Ordeal by Innocence, which is based on the Agatha Christie story. But you haven’t done a ton of period work on screen. Would you like to do more?Yes, it’s thrilling. I mean, the thrilling part of doing this was playing a character so kind of complex and well-imagined by Julian. I don t want to do roles for the sake of them … usually, I just want to play roles that give the woman her do and where her complexities and all her motivations are taken into account. Wherever that comes, I m thrilled to be able to take that on.Belgravia premieres on Sunday, April 12 at 9/8C on Epix.

The fall will see the debut of football and wrestling, along with the premieres of existing hits including 9-1-1, the final season of Empire, The Resident, the second season of reality hit The Masked Singer, and, of course, The Simpsons.The network’s three new shows for the fall include Prodigal Son, about the son of a notorious convicted serial killer who has made hunting murderers his life’s work (and starring The Walking Dead’s Tom Payne and Masters of Sex’s Michael Sheen); Not Just Me, about a woman who discovers that her fertility doctor father used his own sperm to conceive more than a hundred children, including two new sisters (starring Brittany Snow and Timothy Hutton); and Bless the Harts, an animated series about a hard-working Southern family and featuring voices from Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Ike Barinholtz, and Jillian Bell, among others.Fox is holding several of its hit series for midseason (when football and baseball will be finished), including The Orville and Last Man Standing. Goldman won the contest to develop the next series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy universe with her story set in the decline of the Age of Heroes.Fans of Martin’s series of novels and companion works will recognize this period as the beginning of the legendary Long Night, a generation of winter that starved and froze the populace of Westeros and saw a fierce battle of the Others (White Walkers) and their army of dead (wights) against the living.In an earlier blog post, Martin had suggested the number of viable scripts may have narrowed further and hinted at the subject of the prequel written by Condal: There are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. The readers among you might want to grab a copy of Fire Blood when it is released on November 20, though. Fire Blood: 300 Years Before A Game of Thrones (A Targaryen History) Book 1 is the next A Song of Ice and Fire companion book and the first volume of a two-part history of the Targaryens. (The new book begins with Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and recounts generations of Targaryens who fought to hold the seat, up to the civil war that nearly destroyed their dynasty.)What the Prequel Was AboutThe story line: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.”Who Was Running the Show?The show was created by Martin and Goldman, who is known for her screenplays for Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, The Woman in Black, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid film. Her Tomatometer average on 10 films is 73%. Goldman was to serve as showrunner.“I’ve consulted with all of the writers on all of the successor shows, and several of them have visited me in Santa Fe for long days of discussion,” Martin wrote on his blog, “and we’ve gone back and forth in email, text, and telephone, so I have definitely been involved… but really, the accolades here should go to Jane. She has been an absolute thrill to work with… and my god, what a talent.”SPOILER ALERT: While information that follows will be familiar to fans of the Song of Ice and Fire novels and their companion materials, some of it may be considered spoilers to anyone who has chosen not to read the book series.(Photo by HBO)So what is it that “we think we know” about the time period of the first prequel?When It Takes Place: Descent from Age of Heroes = the Beginning of the Long NightThe Age of Heroes: Around 10,000 years before Aegon’s Conquest (we re going to go ahead and use “B.C.” for before the Conquest ), the Children of the Forest and the First Men agreed to the Pact, a peace treaty that kicked off the Age of Heroes, a time that many of the major noble Houses, including the Starks, trace their lineage back to if not earlier.For reference, the events of the seventh season of Game of Thrones occur roughly 300 years after the Conquest (or “A.C.”) of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, king on the Iron Throne, and founder of the Targaryen dynasty of rulers. We know, however, that the show took many liberties with the plots of the books; for one, to compress the series’ timeline.In season 1 of the series, Old Nan tells young Brandon Stark tales of the Long Night, which began 8,000 or 6,000 years B.C. (apparently, even in fiction, accounts may differ).Given the few details we have about the prequel, it would be fair to surmise that its events take place anywhere between 6,000 and 9,000 years before Jon Snow became King in the North and Daenerys returned to Dragonstone with her “children.”That’s a hell of a long time, and it promises that the world the prequel takes place in will be in many ways more primitive than the one fans of the show are used to seeing.Major Events In and Around the Period(Photo by Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBO)The Pact: With around 1,000 or 2,000 years separating the Pact from the Long Night, the immediate events around the treaty won’t likely be seen (except perhaps in flashback like the Tower of Joy moments with young Ned and Lyanna Stark seen in Game of Thrones). The Pact was signed on the Isle of Faces in the center of the lake called Gods Eye.The prequel is set at least 6,000 years B.C., and — just to remind us of the timing — construction on the monstrous castle Harrenhal, a ruin in Game of Thrones, will begin on the north shore of Gods Eye around 42 years B.C. by King Harren Hoare. But who’s to say how the new series will play with the timing of events?The Long Night: A generation of the darkest, coldest winter in known history that saw the Others come down from Lands of Always Winter to devastate the world of men.Battle for the Dawn: Is the final battle of the Long Night — the outcome, of course, is clear given that the events of Game of Thrones happen.The Night s King Rises: The thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night s Watch breaks his vow and declares himself a king. The Starks of Winterfell and the King-Beyond-the-Wall, Joramun, join forces to take him down. The stories have it that his treachery began when he was seduced by a female Other, which — White Walker sex would be something we definitely haven t seen.The Andal Invasion: Accounts vary, but the Andals crossed the Narrow Sea from Essos anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 years B.C., close enough for the prequel to potentially feature something of the Andal Invasion, which began at the Fingers (homeland of Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish in Game of Thrones).In Essos, people discover dragons: If the sheepherders who would go on to become the Valyrians of the region were only just discovering their dragons when the First Men were recovering from the Long Night, that should give us some idea of how much time will have to pass before dragons become part of this story.That said, the Asshai i claimed the dragons of Valyria came from their Shadow Lands and that the Valyrians were taught to control their dragons by Eastern mystics visiting the region, so even if the prequel doesn t show dragons in Valyria, if it spends any time in that magical Eastern part of the world, we may see dragons after all.The histories also suggest that the Valyrians and their dragons may have bullied the Andals out of Essos, which would mean that the Andal Invasion happened later than 6,000 years B.C. — and by later, we mean closer to Aegon s Conquest in the 2,000, 4,000, or 6,000 years between the Long Night and it (depending on when the events of the prequel is set).But the potential overlap (at around 6,000 years B.C. for most of these major events) makes for intriguing possibilities: The prequel could show, for instance, the people of the Valyrian peninsula discovering the dragon nesting place and their first attempts to tame the beasts, while in Westeros the Long Night might be in full swing.Who Are the Possible Players?(Photo by Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBO)Given the timeline, we’ve already established that we’ll likely see the Children of the Forest and certainly the First Men (speakers of the Old Tongue and, after interacting with the Children of the Forest, worshipers of the Old Gods), but who are the notable people among and around them?The Three-Eyed Raven (or Crow): Even though Martin himself has denied that any of the original series cast would appear, of all the characters in Game of Thrones, two who could reasonably make an appearance in a prequel (outside of flash-forwards) are the time-travelers: the original Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow) and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright).When we asked Wright back in December 2017 if Bran might show up as the Three-Eyed Raven in a prequel, he said: It would be fun. There’s so much in the history of Westeros I would love to be involved in, and I’ve got to be a small part of some of those bits and get to sort of observe some of those early things going on in the world. I would love, yeah love, to be able to be a part of any of it, any of the history. So if they offered me to come back for a day and sort of, pop by, and have a look at some scene back from King Aerys or whatever, I wouldn’t say no.”Bran the Builder: Brandon Stark, the founder of House Stark, built the Wall and Winterfell. He is also credited with constructing or aiding the construction of other mighty projects like Storm’s End, seat of House Durrandon (and the later seat of House Baratheon).Durran Godsgrief: The first Storm King, builder of Storm’s End (possibly with help of Bran the Builder and the Children of the Forest), and founder of House Durrandon, Durran married Elenei, supposedly the daughter of the sea god and the goddess of the wind, unleashing all sorts of chaos.Dondarrions: The ancestral House of Game of Thrones’ Beric Dondarrion (leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners and the last head of his House).House Casterly: The richest lords of Westeros had found gold in their rock and, in the process of digging it out, built the most impressive castle on the continent. In the Age of Heroes, they lost their home and the family disappeared.Lann the Clever: Founder of House Lannister who infamously swindled Casterly Rock away from House Casterly.

The anticipation around the show was immense, but no matter how much praise the show got for its mature themes and inventive animation, many saw both Avatar Korra and the show itself as a lesser successor to the tale of Avatar Aang.To mark the show s Netflix premiere, we re taking a look at how The Legend of Korra not only mastered all four elements, but in some ways improved upon its predecessor, enhancing it in the process, and brought balance to the world.IT TOOK EVEN MORE INSPIRATION FROM HAYAO MIYAZAKIWhere Avatar: The Last Airbender was heavily inspired by Asian cultures, landscapes and places, The Legend of Korra jumps forward 70 years in time and finds inspiration in 1920s New York City, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. The main setting in the show, Republic City, is experiencing rapid urbanization and extraordinary technological advances, with the steam-powered technology we saw in the first series giving way to electricity and even magnetism. Automobiles, airplanes, movie cameras, and even mecha suits become normal in the span of the show s run.But, this being Avatar, the setting is more than just window-dressing. The show takes a page out of Hayao Miyazaki’s playbook, particularly his film Princess Mononoke, to explore how rapid industrialization comes at the cost of the world losing its connection to nature. Like in the Studio Ghibli movie, Korra introduces a world that is so disconnected from its spirituality that giant spirits attack people in the second season of the show, bending went from a revered art form to a skill used for menial jobs and even pro-bending, a popular boxing-like sport.IT DID ORIGIN STORIES RIGHTEven though Avatar had a bigger focus on history and the past compared to Korra, the sequel series focuses more on mythology and the spiritual origin of the Avatar. Season 2 makes the spirit world and the Avatar s role as a bridge between the two worlds its central theme, and through it, Korra also explores the origin of the Avatar itself.The two-parter episode Beginnings, from the second season of Korra, is easily among the best storytelling in the entire franchise. The episode tells the story of the very first Avatar, named Wan, and how he fused with the spirit of light in order to battle the spirit of darkness that threatened to destroy both the physical and spirit worlds. Instead of simply using the episode to answer questions no one really wanted answered, Beginnings gave us a prequel story that added to the established mythology without contradicting what came before. The story of Wan directly reflects that of Korra: how by doing what they think is right, they end up creating more problems. The introduction of the light spirit as the cause of the Avatar s powers becomes a huge part of later seasons and one of the best additions to the world s mythology.IT GREW UP WITH ITS AUDIENCEJust as The Last Airbender’s audience grew up between the two shows, so did the themes of the show grow up and become more mature by the time Korra premiered.Korra transforms the subtext of the first show into text, making death an integral part of the story. There are several gruesome deaths shown on screen throughout the show, including a murder-suicide and the execution of a queen by suffocation — and it s not simply for shock value, but to show the consequences of death on the characters. Depression, PTSD, and grief become huge themes in the series, and Korra portrays this with respect to its younger audience, not shielding them, but making them understand the heavy weight of loss.Likewise, Korra isn t afraid to get political, especially through its excellent villains. Far from the sometimes black-and-white villains of Avatar, the show isn t afraid of making its villains sympathetic, or having Korra learn from them. The first villain, Amon, was the leader of a radical group who sought to bring equality to benders and non-benders, who are marginalized in the show s world. The second wanted to bring the world back into spirituality. Korra even dives into nationalism and how it evolves into fascism when left unchecked, leaving the audience to decide how much they d agree with such a leader, and how far they d go before realizing they are following the wrong person — a bold, yet very timely theme for an animated show.IT ALLOWED ITS HERO TO FAILIn interviews, co-creator Bryan Konietzko has talked about wanting Korra to be the polar opposite of Aang, a go-getter and hot-headed girl who s always dreamed of becoming the Avatar. Indeed, unlike the very Campbellian Aang, Korra is not a nobody who realizes she is a chosen one and grows to become more confident; she s the daughter of her tribe s chief who always believed she was special. What makes Korra special is how the show allows its hero to fail, repeatedly, and learn from her mistakes to become a better person.When her hot-headedness leads to Korra losing a big fight against Amon and nearly losing her powers, she spends the second season second-guessing herself and getting others to make decisions for her. When her faith in the wrong person backfired, season 3 saw Korra learn to trust her feelings and accept the consequences. Throughout the show, Korra fought and failed, but she always learned how to pick herself back up and became better because of it.More importantly, the show s more mature subject matter led to the third season ending with Korra in a wheelchair after losing a fight, and the fourth season saw Korra deal with crippling depression and PTSD. These are themes very rarely seen in kid s animation, let alone such a mainstream series as this, and it not only made Korra an exceptional experiment, but the character s journey adds gravitas to the world of the first show as well.IT HAD GLOBAL CONSEQUENCESGone are villain-of-the-week stories from Avatar, leaving Korra to deal with world leaders, bureaucrats, and entire Nations worth of critics instead.When she first arrives in Republic City, Korra realizes that being the Avatar doesn t mean she is instantly well-received by all. Because Aang had disappeared for 100 years and came back to a world engulfed in war, most of the people he encountered were happy to see him, help him in his quest and to accept his wisdom. Korra, on the other hand, realizes that the Avatar doesn t come before the local leaders, that getting involved in a Nation s inner conflict becomes an international incident with severe consequences, and that each Nation has its own way of dealing with issues and wars. This leads to the show exploring the fascinating idea that Korra finds herself in a world that has outgrown the need for an Avatar, that growing apart from spirituality means the world has no need for a spiritual leader.Likewise, Korra makes it very clear that the actions of its leading lady have huge consequences. When Korra deals with Amon and his Equalists ideals, Republic City evolves into the first democracy in the world. When Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open, spirits cross over and start living everywhere, and it restores an entire lost Nation. Just by being injured and out of commission, Korra s absence led to the rise of a fascist dictator that threatened to become the new Ozai.IT EMBRACED DIVERSITY AND QUEER REPRESENTATIONEven though Korra premiered in a post–Buffy the Vampire Slayer world, it was still rare to see a genre show with a female lead, let alone a female lead of color. But Korra not only pushed for diversity in its cast, it also gave us one of the most groundbreaking finales in an animated series.The series final image shows Korra and Asami walking hand in hand to a spirit portal, looking into each other s eyes with a deep emotion and longing that was beyond just a friendship, before drifting into the sunset together. The indication was very clear – these two women had a deep love for each other – and it didn t take long before the creators confirmed that the scene was the beginning of a romantic relationship.What made the moment so significant was not only that it was one of the first times a bisexual couple was shown on-screen on a children s cartoon, but how much it was built up. The show s last two seasons showed us significant glances, hand-holding, blushing, and other hints that Korra and Asami had a deeper relationship than any other two characters on the show. Not only did this image become significant in the context of kid s cartoons, breaking barriers for other shows to include explicitly queer characters and plotlines, but it also made the world of the first show richer by making it more diverse and lived-in.The Legend of Korra is now streaming on Netflix.

After all, his varied career has given us the heralded Hunger, about Bobby Sands and the 1981 Irish hunger strike; the provocative sex-addiction drama Shame; visceral Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave; and, more recently, Widows, a thrilling heist flick with social justice on its mind. It s hard to imagine him hitting a new register, not because artists do not grow, but because the breadth of the work that came prior has already delivered so many thrills with such different flavors. Yet with the help of brand new faces – among them cinematographer Shabier Kirchner and co-writers Courttia Newland and Alastair Siddons – McQueen has given us, with his new five-film anthology Small Axe, a set of dazzling new works that show he s capable of things beyond our imagination.What Small Axe actually is has been the subject of debate – is it a set of TV episodes or an anthology series? – but the clearest way to think of the collection is as five thematically linked films, all set in the West Indian community of London between the late 60s and the mid 80s. In Lovers Rock, we experience a freeing blues party among West Indians shunned from white nightclubs; Mangrove unfolds as a stirring courtroom drama based on a true story and a dark day for the British justice system; the inspiring life of Alex Wheatle, the British novelist who rose from prison to literary acclaim, backbones a fiery eponymous biopic about cultural identity; the fraught relationship between Leroy Logan, a Black cop tasked with reforming London’s racist police force, and his distraught father propels Red, White and Blue; and in the tender coming-of-age story, Education, a determined Black mother saves her son from a prejudiced school system.The stories are the documented experiences of a community rarely seen on the big screen, one that includes McQueen s family, his friends, and himself. With sumptuous shots of women swaying their hips at a steamy blues party, close-ups of simmering mutton curry, and invigorating needle drops, Small Axe is specific to its West Indian subjects. At the same time, in explicating histories from the Black Caribbean diaspora in the UK – delving into ceaseless police harassment, brutal racism, a pernicious justice system, and beyond – Small Axe is familiar to all oppressed people, no matter their origin.Robert Daniels for Rotten Tomatoes: When Red, White and Blue premiered at New York Film Festival a lot of critics were under the impression it was the final film in the anthology, rather than Education. Those are obviously two wildly different tones to conclude with. How did you decide the final order?Steve McQueen: I m a person who grew up with albums. And for me, I had to evaluate how I wanted to end the album, as such. I thought Education was the key in the sense that it’s all about the possibilities, rather than the things people prevent you from achieving. All the way through Small Axe, it was all about how people took it upon themselves to liberate themselves – to emancipate themselves from the environment they were in. So I definitely wanted to end on the infinite possibilities that are achievable in the world. Hence, the ending images.With regards to reception, Small Axe very much feels like an assemblage of Black-specific stories concerning music, food, and politics. Do you consider these Black-specific, though?McQueen: It s like watching a Korean film or a Taiwanese film, or a film from Italy. These are human stories which are universal. That s what it s about. It doesn t matter where you re from or what background you re from. I think you can identify with these as human stories. It s about people overcoming adversity through their own force of will. I think it s very common to anyone, wherever they come from in the world.(Photo by Amazon Studios)Some have described Lovers Rock, especially the dancing, as Black joy and Black love, but it could also be seen as Black lust.McQueen: It’s not lust. It’s a sexual sensuality, but it s not maddening. There’s etiquette.Yes – there are the close-ups of men asking women for a dance by touching their elbow.McQueen: Or even squeezing someone s bottom. It doesn t matter. Sexual sensuality is beautiful. It s wonderful. I remember someone saying about blues parties, “Oh, my mother said that blues parties weren t like that. What actually happened was that people danced as close as possible, but without touching.” I wanted to ask her what party her mother went to. [Laughs] I imagine a lot of people have been embarrassed about what they did when they were younger, and they told their children something else. But there s no shame in it. It s just a celebration of us as fully formed human beings. And it s just beautiful.There are so many new faces in these films. Your collaboration with Michael Fassbender is well known; was it a conscious decision to find new faces for this project?McQueen: Yes, because I wanted to give people a break. I wanted to see people who had never been given an opportunity to fully exercise their talent. And it was amazing. There were a lot of newcomers like Amarah [-Jae St. Aubyn] and Kenyah [Sandy]. And with [cinematographer] Shabier [Kirchner], when you have the opportunity to do what we did with those five feature films – different film stocks and digital cameras – no one s had the opportunity to do that. It s very rare. So the fact that he came on board and took his opportunity, it was great.As a band leader, I would call myself, you just want to play with people who can actually play. Or when you see potential which hasn’t been fully exercised, you try to help them in their development. It s about me choosing who I want to work with and getting the best out of them. Helping people fulfill their potential. And I want to focus particularly on Black artists, regardless of what field they’re working in.And that s what I find so special about this series. We ve seen Letitia Wright and John Boyega in big projects, but not utilized by other filmmakers in the way they are here.McQueen: I look at Star Wars, as far as John is concerned, and you know he s got so much potential. That s a particular genre of film where it s not about acting but reacting. And [Small Axe] was the point where he had to bring his A-game and dig deep for the potential that was there. My job as a director is to help him achieve that. Cause when I first saw him on Attack the Block, I thought this guy has something. He s grown, of course, since Attack the Block. He has a lot more baggage as a human being. And now was his time.Boyega previously described, in the press notes for RWB, taking an interest in Leroy Logan’s favorite music in order to prepare for the role. Are there situations where you’ll give an actor supplementary material as prep?McQueen: Myself, John, and Courttia [Newland] – our co-writer – we talked about our fathers, because that s the thing that brought me into Red, White and Blue and connected me with Leroy Logan. And Leroy talked about his father a lot. When we were interviewing him, I was digging into who he was as a person. That was the seed, and we had to go deep to unravel him. It wasn t just a case of the music. We had to find out the terrain for what we were going to cover. All of our fathers, these West Indian men, were very cautious and very dominant, but at the same time, very caring. They weren’t forthcoming in their emotions, but they were very forthcoming in how we were to conduct ourselves or what they believed we could achieve.(Photo by Amazon Studios)With Leroy Logan s story, it basically ends with his appeal to his father. Alex Wheatle’s story is very self-contained, too. How did you decide what parts of their lives you wanted to recount?McQueen: The first bump in the road for Leroy is the most important bump. The fact of the matter is you could go on, and on, and on, and on, but I needed the initial impact. Leroy’s aspirations had crumbled. He thought he could change the world. His father felt very hurt when he suddenly joined the police. When Leroy realized what the actual situation was, when he realized the actual weight of the institution, and its surroundings were against him – that s the first impact. That s when they sit down at the table and have that conversation about the state of the world.I could’ve done a story about how he [later] left the Metropolitan Police force. But it was about the first impact. It was about the loss of innocence. That was the important thing. Because before your first bump in the road, does it matter what your parents tell you? They can tell you, “You’ve got to be careful.” And maybe you’ve seen stuff on TV. Maybe you’re aware of it. But when it happens to you personally, for the first time, that s when you have a very deep realization [of], Can I still change the world? Do I still feel invincible? You’re sitting down with your father, and he’s been around, and what does Leroy say: “Maybe we should just scorch the Earth and hopefully something good will come again. For me, as a filmmaker, that was the heart. And any Black person, wherever they are in the world, will understand that.(Photo by Amazon Studios)My father grew up in Mississippi, during Segregation. That made an impact on him for his whole life. I had to deal with that impact and figure out what it meant.McQueen: Exactly, exactly. When he s sitting down with his father, and they’re drinking rum together, he s not a boy anymore. He s a man talking to a man. And when his father says, Let me tell you what my mother said to me, it’s a generational thing. The father s talking about his mother. The father is talking to his son. It’s like a circle. So it’s very important where you begin a story. It’s very important where you end a story. This is art. It s not about having a situation where you repeat it again and again. It s a craft. It s as simple as that.And, finally, what are your thoughts on whether Small Axe is a film or television conversation?McQueen: It was always meant to be for television. These are five films, but it s all about the accessibility of these films. I had to go to where people were at. That was always my idea. I said very early on that I wanted my mother to see it, that it could be in every home in the UK, as well as, of course, with Amazon. And as far as these critics groups, I m just very grateful, and very humbled that they’ve recognized it in any capacity. Because it s not always the case that you get any kind of praise. So I m very grateful because all it does is let other people be curious to see them. So it s fantastic. We re all very grateful.Small Axe is now available on Amazon Prime Video. On an Apple device?
