With a tagline of It was beautiful until it went to far, USA Network s new drama is based on Megan Abbott s novel about competitive high school cheerleading. The arrival of French tears at the bond between best friends Addy Hanlon (Herizen Guardiola) and Beth Cassidy (Marlo Kelly).About the show: Dare Me is an unflinching exploration of teen angst, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power in a small Midwestern town. Peering behind the all-American facade, the series dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading. It follows the fraught relationship between two best friends (Herizen Guardiola and Marlo Kelly) after a new coach (Willa Fitzgerald) arrives to bring their team to prominence. While the girls’ friendship is put to the test, their young lives are changed forever when a shocking crime rocks their quiet rust belt town. Part coming-of-age story, part sport drama, part murder mystery, DARE ME exposes the physical and psychological extremes that some young women are willing to endure in order to get ahead. The series stars Willa Fitzgerald (The Goldfinch), Herizen Guardiola (The Get Down), Marlo Kelly (Home Away), Paul Fitzgerald (Younger), Zach Roerig (The Vampire Diaries), Rob Heaps (Imposters) and Alison Thornton (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce). This year already gave us the Netflix feature The Dirt, focusing on hard rockers Mötley Crüe, and this week brings us Rocketman, a fantasy-tinged look back at the life of Elton John. Taron Egerton takes on the challenge of portraying John in the film, which traces his upbringing and musical career, culminating in his lifelong friendship with songwriter Bernie Taupin (played by Jamie Bell). It also happens to be directed by Dexter Fletcher, the same man who took over and completed Bohemian Rhapsody in the wake of Bryan Singer s dismissal from the project. Critics say Rocketman is an affectionate, entertaining portrait that benefits from Egerton s powerhouse performance, John s indelible music, and some inventive cinematic flourishes, and it should both please longtime fans and serve as a worthy introduction for neophytes.

9.27.6 3月喜迎This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Polly Pocket and Disney s Snow White and Tower of Terror. This WEEK S TOP STORYOPTIMUS PRIME TO RETURN IN TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)By the time Michael Bay finally finished directing Transformers movies in 2017 with Transformers: The Last Knight (Rotten at 15%), he had given us five of them, although none of them scored as high on the Tomatometer as the first installment  still Rotten at 58%  a decade earlier. The franchise fared much better with the 1987-set prequel Bumblebee (Certified Fresh at 90%), so it perhaps shouldn t be surprising that the next step will be another prequel that moves the story into the 1990s. Paramount Pictures announced in a virtual event this week that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (6/24/2022) will focus on both Optimus Prime (again voiced by Peter Cullen) in New York City in 1994 as we re introduced to animal-centric Transformers like Air-Razor (a bird), Rhinox (a rhinocerous), and Optimus Primal (a gorilla), the leader of the Maximals, as well as the monstrous Terrorcons and the villainous Predacons. Speaking about the move towards characters from the Beast Wars franchise, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said, We had somewhat exhausted, I would say, the battle between Decepticons and Autobots. It s also worth noting that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (6/24/2022) is scheduled for release just two weeks after Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022), so there will be a lot of dinosaurs and robot monsters stomping around next summer.Other Top Headlines1. STEVEN SPIELBERG S WEST SIDE STORY STAR IS ALSO THE NEW SNOW WHITE (Photo by ©20th Century Studios)Walt Disney Pictures just keeps chugging along with their live-action remakes of their classic animated features, with last month s Cruella (Fresh at 74%) being the latest such film. Even with so many movies already released, there are still a few biggies that haven t been remade yet, and that includes the very first Walt Disney feature film, 1937 s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Certified Fresh at 98%). That will soon change, however, as Walt Disney Pictures has officially announced that their new Snow White will be played by Rachel Zegler, who will soon be starring in another remake as Maria in Steven Spielberg s West Side Story (12/20/2021). The new Snow White will be directed by Marc Webb, who is probably still best known for directing the two Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield (Certified Fresh at 72% and Rotten at 51%, respectively). This new Snow White will also feature new songs written by Benj Pasak and Justin Paul, who previously worked on both La La Land and The Greatest Showman, as well as the upcoming Dear Evan Hansen.2. NEVER SAY NEVER: STEVEN SPIELBERG SIGNS PRODUCTION DEAL WITH NETFLIX (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection) Never say never is a saying for a reason. If we turn the clock back just over two years ago to early 2019, we can find lots of articles like this one about the war of words that was going on between Steven Spielberg and Netflix, whose films Spielberg felt should not be considered for Academy Awards if they didn t follow the pre-existing rules about theatrical runs (instead suggesting Netflix movies should be eligible for Emmy Awards). A lot has changed since then, of course, including the moves of most major studios into the streaming market, like Warner Bros. releasing most of its 2021 slate day-and-date on HBO Max. In a move that had some wondering if Hell Freezes Over? , Steven Spielberg s Amblin Partners has made a deal with Netflix to produce at least two movies a year for the streaming outlet. Although Spielberg is indeed the executive producer of Amblin Partners films, it s important to note that most of their films these days are not directed by Spielberg  himself (and there s also a wide margin of difference between what a producer and an executive producer does). It s also important to note that the Amblin/Netflix deal will exist side-by-side with the pre-existing deal that Amblin will continue with Universal Pictures, Spielberg s longtime studio. Of course, we sort of knew something like this might happen someday once Netflix picked up the rights to Amblin s The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Certified Fresh at 89%).3. OLIVIA WILDE AND TOBEY MAGUIRE JOIN DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Director Damien Chazelle is coming off an impressive streak of three films in a row that were all very well received, including multiple Academy Award nominations (and a few wins): Whiplash (Certified Fresh at 94%), La La Land (Certified Fresh at  91%), and the moon landing drama First Man (Certified Fresh at 87%). For his next film, Chazelle is turning the clock back again to look at the Golden Age of Hollywood of the late 1920s as the silent film era gave way to the talkies. Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt have been attached to star in Babylon for some time now, but this week, the cast expanded a bit more. Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire, and director Spike Jonze have all joined the still-expanding ensemble of Babylon, which most recently was described as The Great Gatsby on steroids. Other stars we can expect to see in Babylon include Jovan Adepo, Diego Calva, Flea, Lukas Haas, Li Jun Li, Max Minghella, Eric Roberts, Katherine Waterston, and Samara Weaving. Paramount Pictures will first release Babylon in select cities on December 25, 2022, and then expand it wide on January 6, 2023.4. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT JOAQUIN PHOENIX S NEW MOVIE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just before the COVID-19 pandemic dismantled the majority of the 2020 theatrical box office, Joaquin Phoenix scored his biggest box office hit ever with the super villain origin movie Joker (Fresh at 68%), which earned over .07 billion worldwide (and an Academy Award for Best Actor, to boot). For now, Phoenix is keeping his next few post-Joker projects relatively indie and low-budget, choosing instead to work with acclaimed directors. Let s start with this week s newest project, which is something called Polaris that will team him up with Rooney Mara and reunite him with his You Were Never Really Here (Certified Fresh at 89%) director Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Callar Certified Fresh at 84%, We Need to Talk About Kevin Certified Fresh at 75%). That s all we know about Polaris, except that we can probably presume this will not be an adaptation of Marvel s green-haired mutant character (though wouldn t that be awesome). Another Joaquin Phoenix project that was already announced before this week is Disappointment Blvd for director Ari Aster (Midsommar), which is described as an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. This week, Amy Ryan and Broadway stars Nathan Lane and Patti Lupone all joined Phoenix in the film, which might suggest it has something to do with Broadway, or maybe that s just a red herring.5. THIS WEEK IN SUPERHERO COSTUMES: THE FLASH AND SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS (Photo by David F. Sandberg)Although Marvel Studios does have over a dozen upcoming MCU films in some stage of production or post-production, many of their most imminent films use pre-existing costumes, or they have already been revealed during the last year or two (partly because COVID-19 caused a longer than usual delay before their releases, such as with Eternals). Right now, DC Comics has both The Flash (11/4/2022) and the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023) in production, and this week, in something of a one-two-three punch, we got three different new costume reveals from both films. The biggest reveal comes from The Flash, as set photos show Sasha Calle in her costume (without a cape, which might be inserted with CGI) as the new Supergirl. We also got to see Michael Keaton for the first time in The Flash as well, but it s just him as Bruce Wayne, so it s literally just Michael Keaton in a regular suit. Also, thanks to set photos leaked online, we have an idea of what Helen Mirren will look like as the villain Hespera in the Shazam! sequel, and finally, all of the new Shazam! Family costumes have been updated for the sequel as well.6. SCARLETT JOHANSSON PRODUCING DISNEY S TOWER OF TERROR (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)Walt Disney Pictures is truly a massive umbrella under which there are many different parallel production lines, including Marvel Studios, all the various Star Wars projects, their live-action remakes of classic animated films, the 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures subsidiaries, their own animated features, and Pixar (and we re probably forgetting a few brands, at that). One theme that Disney doesn t use as often, but has given them at least one major franchise in Pirates of the Caribbean, is their ongoing effort to adapt their popular theme park attractions into feature films, with the next example being this summer s Jungle Cruise (7/30/2021). We can now add Tower of Terror to the list, as Disney s Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson is producing the project for Disney, with Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley currently working on a screenplay adaptation. The curious thing about Disney making a Tower of Terror movie that could potentially become its own franchise is that the original ride started as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and the Disneyland ride was later retrofitted to become a Guardians of the Galaxy ride. This Tower of Terror movie ostensibly won t have anything to do with either of those franchises.7. LENA DUNHAM TO DIRECT POLLY POCKET MOVIE (Photo by Bloomberg/Getty Images)The Mattel toy company has been trying to make a live-action Barbie since at least as far back as 2009, including stages when people like Diablo Cody, Amy Schumer, and Patty Jenkins were in some way associated with the project; right now, it s Margot Robbie who s attached to it. We bring up the lingering struggles to make a Barbie movie happen because one way to interpret this week s news is that Mattel might be doubling down on another girl toy brand. Lena Dunham (HBO s Girls) recently wrapped production of a medieval adventure called Catherine, Called Birdy, and she s now attached to write and direct a live-action film based on the Polly Pocket toy line. Lily Collins is also already signed to star in the MGM project as the titular character, a pocket-sized woman who befriends a young girl (yet to be cast).
PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT: Peacock To Debut Universal Titles No Later Than Four Months After Their 2022 Theatrical Premiere(Photo by Universal Pictures)Streaming service Peacock has signed a multi-year deal with Universal Filmed Entertainment Group that will have Peacock debuting Universal titles exclusively no more than four months after their theatrical releases in 2022. Among the films included on Universal’s 2022 slate: Jurassic World: Dominion, a new movie from Oscar-winner Jordan Peele, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Minions: The Rise of Gru. Additionally, beginning in 2022, original films developed and produced exclusively for Peacock by Universal Pictures will also premiere on the service.  (Note: Rotten Tomatoes is a division of NBCUniversal, like Peacock and Universal Filmed Entertainment.) In related news, Prime Video and IMDb TV have signed a multi-year licensing deal with Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. Prime Video will have an exclusive pay-one window for UFEG’s slate of live-action films in the U.S. starting with the 2022 release slate and will also receive rights to a package of UFEG’s library movies. IMDb TV, Amazon’s premium free streaming service, has also secured an exclusive network-window for films from UFEG’s 2020-2021 theatrical slate and rights to a package of animated titles.Meanwhile, Peacock also announced a new original series, Pride Prejudice: An Experiment in Romance, a reality dating series obviously inspired by the success of Netflix’s Bridgerton, in which “a heroine looking for her duke” and a group of dudes will be “transported to a Regency-style England” and housed in a castle in the countryside, where “the heroine and suitors will experience that with which dreams are made of. From carriage rides and boat rides on the lake to archery and handwritten letters to communicate, they will be immersed in a time-traveling quest for love. In the end, our heroine and her suitors will discover if the ultimate romantic experience will find them true love.” Wannabe contestants, er, “heroines and suitors,” can apply to be on the series in this lengthy document.Showtime Networks has extended a deal with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners that will mean additional Amblin films will air across Showtime channels and streaming service. The upcoming Amblin movies included: Spielberg’s untitled film starring Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen; Distant, starring Anthony Ramos and Naomi Scott; Easter Sunday, starring comedian Jo Koy; and Last Voyage of the Demeter, starring Corey Hawkins.50 Cent’s G-Unit Film Television is developing Unrapped, an ABC reality series in which celebrity contestants are coached by iconic hip-hop mentors, and then compete in rap battles until a king or queen is crowned. (Deadline)(Photo by Angela Weiss/AFP via Getty Images)Greg Berlanti (pictured), who currently has 14 series produced by his company on the air, and Sarah Schechter, Berlanti Productions’ chairperson and partner, have formed Berlanti/Schechter Films, a collaboration that includes a first-look deal for feature films at Netflix. Among Berlanti’s current series include the Netflix drama You, soon to premiere its third season, and the recently concluded Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. (Deadline)TBS will air Wipeout: The Suicide Squad Special on Aug. 1, with Suicide Squad director James Gunn and cast members  Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, David Dastmalchian, and Daniela Melchior joining their movie co-star, Wipeout co-host John Cena, in a special episode of the obstacle course series.CNN’s new eight-episode History of the Sitcom series premieres July 11 with back-to-back episodes “A Family Matter,” which examines how sitcoms have evolved to reflect the changing face of American families, and “Sex the Sitcom,” exploring the revolution of sex in sitcoms, including the integration of LGBTQ+ storylines in representing a more modern world.Rupert Murdoch is launching Fox Weather, a 24-hour streaming weather network later this year, while the Weather Channel will also launch a streaming service, Weather Channel Plus. (The New York Times)Robert and Michelle King (The Good Fight) have signed a new five-year overall producing deal with CBS under their King Size Productions banner, which gives the network exclusive rights to produce content created by the Kings across all platforms.Comic-Con@Home To Feature The Wheel of Time, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, Rick and Morty, and More Panels(Photo by Adult Swim)Comic-Con International: San Diego will once again be virtual, and networks are beginning to announce details of their panels for the July 23-25 Comic-Con at Home. Some early highlights:AMC: The Walking Dead’s final SDCC panel, moderated by Chris Hardwick, and featuring Scott M. Gimple, showrunner Angela Kang, and cast members Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lauren Cohan, Khary Payton, Christian Serratos, Josh McDermitt, Eleanor Matsuura, and Michael James Shaw. Hardiwck also hosts the panels for Fear The Walking Dead, with panelists Gimple, showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, and cast members Lennie James, Alycia Debnam- Carey, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Jenna Elfman, Karen David, Mo Collins, and Christine Evangelista; and The Walking Dead: World Beyond with panelists Gimple, showrunner Matt Negrete, and cast members  Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston,  Nico Tortorella, Annet Mahendru,  Julia Ormond, Jelani Alladin, and Joe Holt. There will also be panels for BBC America’s Doctor Who, with 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker on the panel; Shudder series V/H/S/94, Horror Noire, Creepshow, and Slasher: Flesh Blood; and the AMC+ series Ultra City Smiths, with panelists Jimmi Simpson, Debra Winger, and Luiz Guzmán.
Falling in line with most other live events this year, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival — the most prestigious gathering dedicated entirely to the wide-ranging medium — was forced to go online. Though nothing can replace the energy of a festival attended in person, the silver lining was that fans and industry professionals had the opportunity to watch the majority of the films in competition and multiple panels, all of which would have taken place in the festival s namesake French city, from anywhere the world. This year, Annecy’s two feature film competitions, L officielle and Contrechamp, as well as its Work In Progress selection, featured a mix of new projects from prominent directors and productions from regions that are rarely present on such an international stage. The dozen movies we’ve chosen to highlight in this list, most of which will be released in upcoming months, remind us how animation can tell stories in all genres and express complex historical, political, and philosophical themes as deftly and insightfully as live action does.Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary (France, Denmark)(Photo by Gebeka Films)Legendary frontierswoman Calamity Jane, who didn t abide by any restrictive 19th century gender norms, comes to life in French director Rémi Chayé’s stirring new movie, which pieces together a riveting Western from episodes of her defiant childhood wandering, working hard, and asserting her freedom. As seen in his previous effort, Long Way North, Chayé is fond of producing 2D animation with a simple graphic style, both in character design and backgrounds, and brightly saturated colors. The wide-open land of the Wild West functions as a stunning backdrop for this reimagining of the strong-willed, American heroine, enhanced by Florencia Di Concilio’s country-inspired score.Chayé’s Long Way North is available on VOD here: FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, iTunesInu-Oh (Japan, China)(Photo by GKIDS)Continuing his prolific streak, visionary Japanese filmmaker and animator Masaaki Yuasa is currently in production on a new work set in 14th century Kyoto grounded on the classical dramatic art of Noh and biwa (lute) performances, which began during the Genpei War to honor fallen soldiers. The eponymous protagonist, Inu-Oh, is a skilled Noh performer who befriends Tomona, a blind biwa priest, and together they achieve the type of massive stardom equivalent to what we are familiar with in today’s pop culture. Manga author Taiyō Matsumoto (Tekkonkinkreet) serves as character designer to provide a singular aesthetic to this historical epic. (Presented as a Work In Progress)GKIDS will release the Inu-Oh in the U.S. in 2021. Earlier this year, GKIDS released Yuasa’s most recent movie, Ride Your Wave. The Island (Romania, France, Belgium)(Photo by Aparte Film)Romanian director Anca Damian reinterprets the classic fable of Robinson Crusoe to discuss the refugee crisis facing Europe today in a surrealist animated project that also happens to be a musical. Ambitious on all fronts, The Island takes place in a futuristic world where augmented reality allows Robinson to interact with his surroundings on a more profound level. Rather than a paper diary, a tablet becomes his preferred instrument. Mutant animals and eccentric characters, whose movements were based on a professional dancer’s choreography, will surely make for a visual treat, anchored by a topical message. (Presented as a Work In Progress)Damian’s most recent completed film Marona’s Fantastic Tale was just released in the U.S. on June 12 by GKIDS.Jungle Beat: The Movie (2020) (Mauritius)(Photo by ©Timeless Films)Produced entirely by Sandcastle Studios on the African island nation of Mauritius and South Africa’s Sunrise Productions, this CG escapade puts a sci-fi twist on the talking-animal trope. Originally on Earth to conquer the planet, a young alien, Fneep, begins to feels homesick and enlists the help of the jungle’s fauna, including a vivacious monkey, a grumpy hedgehog, and a kind-hearted elephant, to return to his family. Adapted from the television series of the same name, which was broadcast in over 200 countries around the world, Sandcastle’s first animated feature showcases impressive production value throughout.Available now on: Amazon, Google Play, iTunesKill It and Leave this Town (Poland)(Photo by Bombonierka)Polish artist and animator Mariusz Wilczynski lets the audience into his subconscious through hand-drawn hallucinations. Melancholic childhood memories and morbid ruminations about mortality materialize as lines on paper, accompanied by a rock-infused score. Wilczynski introduces us to his parents, and in turn to himself as well, at different stages in their lives and constructs an abstract portrait of a family that’s as striking as it is bizarre. Lo-fi in the most masterful way and idiosyncratic to a fault in how it interprets the human condition (with all its cruelty and tenderness), Wilczynski’s debut feature won’t soon be erased from your psyche. The Knight and the Princess (Saudi Arabia, Egypt)(Photo by Alsahar Animation)A co-production between Saudi Arabia and Egypt and the first animated from these nations to have an international presence, this seventh century saga follows 15-year-old knight Mohammed Bin Alkassim as he embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue women and children abducted by ruthless pirates. Blending 2D and 3D techniques, the team behind the film achieved a look that calls to mind classic Disney movies, even more so because of its use of memorable songs. Furthermore, the villain sidekicks, two clumsy djinns, will surely remind viewers of Pain and Panic from Hercules. It’s a culturally specific production with wide appeal.Lupin III: The First (Japan)(Photo by GKIDS)Created in 1967 by manga artist Kazuhiko Katō (A.K.A. Monkey Punch), Lupin III is an astute thief descended from French writer Maurice Leblanc s fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, and his globetrotting adventures have been explored over multiple TV series and films, including Hayao Miyazaki s 1979 directorial debut The Castle of Cagliostro. Now, over 50 years after its first appearance, the franchise evolves for a CG installment by writer-director Takashi Yamazaki. This time, the likable criminal and his dexterous accomplices must hunt down an enigmatic diary that could potentially resurrect the Third Reich if it were to fall into the wrong hands. Faced with the challenge of working with such a well-known property, Yamazaki embraces the 3D aesthetic to make it his own.GKIDS will release the film in the U.S. later this year.My Love Affair with Marriage (Latvia, USA)(Photo by signebaumane.com)After tackling mental health in her debut feature Rocks in My Pockets, Latvia’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014, animator Signe Baumane examines the neurochemistry of love and the unjust societal standards imposed on women. Through sharp observations and two dozen songs, viewers will get to witness the introspective journey of Zelma, a young woman searching for a romantic partner in Soviet times. To attain her singular style, Baumane and her small team constructed physical sets similar to those used in stop-motion animation and photographed them. She then animated the 2D characters on paper before sending them to be colored in Riga, the Latvian capital. The final result is marvelous. (Presented as a Work In Progress)Baumane’s Rocks in My Pockets is available on VOD here: iTunes, VimeoNahuel and the Magic Book (Chile, Brazil)(Photo by Carburadores)Latin American animation has grown in quality and international prominence over the last decade, and this Chilean adventure from director German Acuña is one of the most accomplished features to come out of the region to date. Inspired by legends from the Mapuche indigenous people, it follows Nahuel, a boy who’s afraid of the sea until he comes across a magical book and must rescue his father from a malevolent wizard. Impressive action sequences and polished rural backgrounds resembling those in Studio Ghibli’s catalogue enrich this family-oriented story populated with fantastical creatures. The Nose or the Conspiracy of Mavericks (Russia)(Photo by Annecy International Animation Film Festival)Part offbeat opera about a man whose nose leaves his body to become a powerful figure in 19th century St. Petersburg, and part satirical examination of how Stalin’s murderous regime imposed creative restrictions on music and art. Using a variety of mediums, from watercolors to cutouts on glass, veteran Russian director Andrey Khrzhanovskiy harnesses Nikolai Gogol’s surrealist short story The Nose and Dmitri Shostakovich’s adaption of that same work for the stage into an endlessly inventive and biting political satire. Anachronistic references, a nod to Battleship Potemkin, and live-action snippets that provide insight into the making of the film complete a dazzling package.True North (Japan, Indonesia)(Photo by SUMIMASEN)This computer-animated drama from Japanese director Eiji Han Shimizu captures the brutal conditions inside a North Korean prison camp. Our guide into this harsh underworld is 9-year-old Yo-han, who was sent there with his immediate family after his father’s disappearance. Through this young boy’s eyes we witness the worst and the best of humanity. Proving once again that the medium can do more than children’s content, the animation here helps the subject matter leave a strong emotional mark and enables the filmmaker to access an unseen reality. Simultaneously, we root for the hero’s escape and mourn for all the loss and tragedy he’s endured.Wolfwalkers (Ireland, Luxembourg)(Photo by Cartoon Saloon)Two-time Oscar-nominated director Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) returns with a new Irish wonder based on Celtic folklore. Co-directed by Ross Stewart, the upcoming hand-crafted vision unfolds in 17th century Kilkenny, the same town where their studio Cartoon Saloon is located, and brings to life the legend of the wolfwalkers, people with the ability to leave their bodies at night and experience the world as wolves. Breathtaking animation draws us in to the friendship between Robyn, the daughter of a hunter bent on taming the land, and Mebh, a ferocious little girl who lives in the forest, and how the former rediscovers the wildness within her.  Don’t be surprised if Wolfwalkers lands Moore a third Academy Award nod. (Presented as a Work In Progress)Apple TV+ will release the film globally later this year.

Curses and miracles aligned over this Easter weekend as Hollywood awaits the flood of moviegoers headed to theaters next week for the conclusion of the Avengers saga. First things first, though, as one superhero is not done yet — even if he would be wise to fly away from the screeching phantom that challenged him this weekend.King of the Crop: Curse Opens on Top, But May Come In for a Soft Landing(Photo by New Line Cinema)Warner Bros.’ Conjuring Universe film, The Curse of La Llorona, opened to a very respectable .5 million. Not terribly well received after its screening at the SXSW film festival this March, the studio then decided to forego press screenings altogether, and it is sitting on a 32% Tomatometer score. That’s the weakest rating for a wide release horror film since last November’s The Possession of Hannah Grace (20%). Even The Prodigy got a 45%. La Llorona’s opening is well ahead other April horror entries like 2008’s Prom Night (.8 million), Scream 4 (.69), and last year’s Truth or Dare (.66). Those three films finished between million–44 million. It is also ahead of this month’s Pet Sematary, which began with .5 million and currently sits at .5 million, just ahead of the pace of White Noise, which finished with .38 million; less than Mary Lambert’s 1989 Pet Sematary (.46 million). But a potential million finish domestically for La Llorona would be solid for the million production. It is already over million worldwide.Rotten Returns: Penguins March to the Bottom of DisneyNature(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)The DisneyNature films have done fairly well as far as documentaries go. Earth and Chimpanzee are the 6th and 7th highest-grossing docs of all-time, and Oceans, Bears, Monkey Kingdom, and African Cats are still all in the top 20. So they had to be hoping for better with the 90%-rated Penguins, given that March of the Penguins is the second-highest grossing documentary ever with .4 million. Disney’s film has managed just .2 million since opening on Wednesday. Even the weakest entry in the series, Born in China, made .6 million in its first five days. The Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Milestone Just Before the Endgame(Photo by Marvel Studios)Shazam! dropped to second this weekend, but only with a 29% fall as it joins 15 films to make between 0 million–122 million in 17 days, seven of which are animated. Its .3 million third weekend is the fifth-best amongst them behind just Hitch, Wreck-It Ralph, Coco, and Happy Feet. Those four films grossed between 9 million–210 million, while the 11 films Shazam! beat grossed between 9 million–192 million. DC’s latest could be headed for somewhere in the 0 million range, That is clearly nothing compared to Captain Marvel, which appears to be getting the Black Panther treatment now, as fans want to make sure they are completely caught up for Endgame. It has reached the 0 million domestic mark, and at .098 million, it is the 25th highest-grossing film of all-time. Its 5.7% increase from last week to .1 million this weekend is the eighth-best seventh weekend ever.Another version of a superhero is on display in Breakthrough. Namely, The Almighty, as the power of prayer beats doctors in reviving a drowned boy. Over the weekend the 64%-rated film grossed .1 million, ranking it ahead of Soul Surfer and God’s Not Dead on the faith chart. That’s less than other pre-Easter releases like Heaven Is For Real (.5 million) and Miracles From Heaven (.8 million), each involving children, illness, and revival. Breakthrough has made .6 million since opening Wednesday.Dumbo finally hit 0 million on its 24th day and likely finishes somewhere between 0 million–120 million. That means a worldwide total somewhere in the 0 million range, which may be just enough to be the second-biggest bomb of 2019, leaving the top title to Paramount’s Wonder Park. Annapurna’s United Artists Releasing did no favors for Missing Link, which crash-landed on opening (despite a 90% critical rating). Audiences may have caught on to the critics singing its praises because the film dropped just 26% this weekend — the second smallest drop of the year after The Upside — but it has still only grossed .9 million.(Photo by @ Universal )Last week’s releases fell further down the chart. Little dropped 45 percent from second to fifth and has made million to date. Lionsgate’s Hellboy, though, is a domestic failure. It’s 67.8-percent drop is the third worst of 2019 for a wide release behind Replicas and The Beach Bum. Neil Marshall’s film has made less than Elektra did in its first 10 days; the 2005 film lost more than half its theaters in its third week. If that happens to Hellboy next week, then it may not even reach million. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy made .1 million in its opening weekend. Finally, Jordan Peele’s Us looks to be preparing for one more Top 10 stay next weekend. Currently on par in weekend five with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Thor, it may settle in with a final gross between 9 million–181 million; ahead of Get Out’s 6 million. This Time Last Year: Audiences Chose Quiet Over Rampage(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)A Quiet Place reclaimed the top spot at the box office, edging out Rampage in its second weekend by less than 0,000. I Feel Pretty ( millon) also took third place by less than 0,000 over challenger Super Troopers 2, which made nearly half of its total money this weekend. The Paula Patton thriller, Traffik, opened all the way back in ninth with just .94 million. The top 10 films grossed 6.60 million and averaged 60% on the Tomatometer. This week’s top 10 grossed an estimated .65 million and averaged 61% with critics. On the Vine: Avengers: Endgame Looking to Bust Some Records(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)The summer movie season once again begins in April and no one wants to get in the way of Avengers: Endgame. Eleven years in the making. Who lives? Who dies? All questions the fans want answered, but Disney is looking at others. Will Endgame best Infinity War’s all-time opening weekend of 7.6 million? (Likely.) Could it actually climb to 0 million by the end of Sunday? (Quite possibly.) Does it best Black Panther’s 0 million to become the highest-grossing Marvel film ever? (Could be.) Are the numbers of Avatar and Star Wars in any danger? (We’ll see.) But we will track its progress week-to-week right here. The Full Top 10: April 19-21The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 28% – .50 million (.50 million total)Shazam! (2019) 90% – .34 million (1.34 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .10 million (.60 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .10 million (0.02 million total)Little (2019) 46% – .45 million (.38 million total)Dumbo (2019) 46% – .80 million (1.25 million total)Pet Sematary (2019) 57% – .85 million (.58 million total)Missing Link (2019) 88% – .36 million (.97 million total)Us (2019) 93% – .26 million (0.44 million total)Hellboy (2019) 18% – .88 million (.67 million total)

With a Tomatometer score of 96%, Avengers: Endgame is a hit with the critics. And with more than 0 million in the bank on just its first weekend, we know it s a box office smash. But what do fans think about the movie now that they ve gone out in droves to see it?Well, they mostly love it: Avengers: Endgame has a current Audience Score of 92%, slightly above Infinity War s Audience Score of 91%. But while the praise is overwhelming, it s not universal. And how could it be, with the weight of 21 films and 11 years of expectations on its shoulders? We combed through the user reviews that RT fans have submitted since Endgame s release and picked out some of the most insightful takes, and those which speak to some of the major themes we re seeing in user feedback, and put them in one place below. Check out these great user reviews and then let us know what you thought of the film, and these reviews, in the comments. (Note, some of the reviews have been slightly edited for length and grammar/spelling.)(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)A Love Letter to the MCU, with Nerdgasms to Boot[A] culmination of 22 films since 2008 led by the visionary mind of Kevin Feige and complex integration of the Russo Brothers as directors. This movie is not just incredible on its own but a step back to memory lanes of the movies done in the past – it is quite mind boggling how they ve done it. But they have and this is the fitting end this chapter of MCU. It is still packed with a lot of surprises despite all the fan theories – and they are BIG ONES. It still gives you that roller coaster ride of emotions but at a deeper and more serious tone. For millions of fans who have followed MCU since 2008 and decided to stop watching Marvel movies (I can t imagine why) this is really a great end for our superheroes journey. Any gaps from previous movies are filled. This one although bitter sweet is [a] fitting end.– Michael, 5 StarsAmazing love-letter from Marvel to the world. A breathtaking and emotional viewing of quick shots of action and humour, but impactful long-lasting satisfactory moments from its dramatic beats and character interactions. It s an end that has been bathed in pure Marvel gold and magic. Tengku N., 5 starsThe first and second act are an absolute love letter to the MCU movies that came before this one. The third act is an emotional roller coaster ride of nerdgasms and cry time which I never thought I will see and feel from a superhero movie. The final scene hits home big time. If you are not very familiar with the MCU, the first two acts may feel a bit slow for you. But the payoff in the third act is just awesome. Patrick B., 4.5 stars(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)BUT IS IT BETTER THAN INFINITY WAR?I m one of the people who came away from Infinity War restless and discontent. I really wasn t sure how the Russos were going to resolve all the hanging threads, much less reverse the snap. I have to say they surpassed my wildest dreams. While I didn t love every character arc, I can appreciate them all .. and my favorite? That one was so far beyond anything I could have hoped for. Kelly L., 5 starsI gotta admit ..I ll probably be the only one who feels this way ..but I d be lying if I didn t say .I liked Infinity War better. On a personal level, Infinity War kept me more consistently engaged and invested (key word: consistently) than this one did. Granted, this one does have some truly glorious aspects, my two favorites being: 1) the most epic battle sequences in Endgame feel multitudes more tremendous than those in Infinity War for a number of reasons (the most memorable involving Captain America); and 2) Thanos returns here with a vengeance in a wonderfully written way. The plot, as implied by the trailer(s) and without revealing any details, chooses to cater more heavily to the past as opposed to the quickest possible way to solve the problem presented at the end of Infinity War, resulting in the hefty runtime and some filler moments but ultimately creating a movie that feels more complete overall in terms of the entire franchise ..like a fitting conclusion, a proper resolution, the end of an era.  John S., 4.5 stars(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It Left Some People DisappointedMy expectation and anticipation for this film were sky-high, buoyed by positive responses by critics and fans. However, having spent hours and hours on character and plot analysis with other MCU nerds, I had extremely high expectations, which were not met. I m not disappointed because they didn t make a movie that solely exists in my head, but the film wasn t what it could have been. I wanted to be surprised, shocked, and moved exclaiming you sneaky bastards, I see what you did there, and find fruition to the many clues, dangling threads and character arcs that were laid out in previous films, most notably Infinity War. Instead, the resolution oh. ok. so that s it. fine. The film abandoned several important characters, neglecting what seemed to be important setup and development (Loki), inferred strategic importance to the meta-story (Strange, Captain Marvel) or have just devolved the characters into punchlines (Thor, Quill). Moments that were supposed to move emotionally were diffused by familiarity (seen that before!) or anti-climax (we pause this death for a joke). For a series that always emphasized team work, the concluding gesture undermined it. Lots of plot holes and more questions unanswered. Lynne D., 3.5 starsThis is going to feel weird. I have been a hardcore MCU fan since the start. I thought there were amazing moments in this movie. Definitely plenty to get hyped about with my MCU friends. Something about it as a whole was lackluster. Maybe it was because it felt like they flew through certain major plot elements despite it s extremely long run-time. I appreciate that they gave conclusions to our major heroes, but I wasn t crazy about how they seemed to rush and skip over certain things that I d rather have seen fleshed out more. I don t want to criticize it too heavily because it was an impossible task to fit all this into this conclusion movie and flesh everything out, I just personally felt a bit underwhelmed. I honestly went into this movie thinking it would easily become my favorite MCU movie to date, but it s definitely not. Still think it s very good, don t get me wrong. Stephen I. 3.5 starsThe good: Fun action scenes that are more creative than many similar films. Genuinely great moments of comedy. All characters, though some have very short appearances, are treated well. The bad: The dialog is clunky and lacks any subtlety. The movie also has an unfortunate habit of throwing mildly funny one liners in that ruin moments of natural tension. Many, seemingly insurmountable, problems faced by the heroes are solved so quickly and easily that it gives an odd feeling of pace at some points of the movie. Billy P. 2.5 stars(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It s a Cathartic Conclusion to the Infinity SagaA cathartic, satisfying experience for all MCU fans that have been around from the start, Endgame is full of callbacks and emotional payoffs years in the making. The stakes are real. The character arcs justified, balanced, and well-executed. The emotions tangible, delivered fantastically by every actor, particularly the original six. The action is exciting, but doesn t take center stage until it needs to. The humor and heart truly make this movie. Caitlin B., 5 starsAs a diehard comic book fanboy, this a dream fulfilled experience. I grew up loving these characters from the comics as a child. I love both DC and Marvel respectively. That being said the astonishing work done by Kevin Feige and the creative team at Marvel Studios is beyond amazing. They brought new life to these legendary characters for audiences to watch and enjoy. The MCU has been an exciting experience throughout the course of 22 films telling a narrative with unique creativity and wonderful memories by a cast that have transcended to super stars. This is a great tribute to Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and the founding fathers of the Marvel Comics Shamar L., 5 starsCheck out all of the user reviews for Avengers: Endgame so far. Like this?
