(Photo by @ Paramount, @ Warner Bros. Pictures, @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ HBO, @ Amazon )Warning: The below contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. It’s hard to imagine anyone besides Robert Downey Jr. playing our beloved Iron Man — the wise-cracks, the cockiness, the chemistry with Pepper, and that ability to break us in half with grief in the end. In truth, however, the most pitch-perfect casting in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost did not come to be. RDJ, as his Avengers castmates call him, was not Marvel’s first choice to play the billionaire/genius/playboy/philanthropist/superhero.The Oscar-nominated star was always known to be talented, but he wasn t a mega-star. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige once told Rotten Tomatoes that back then, the actor  was one of the best actors on the planet — [not] necessarily one of the biggest marquee stars on the planet. And at the time of his casting — think back to the mid-2000s — quite a few other A-listers were hoping to don the iconic red and gold suit. An impassioned plea from director Jon Favreau and casting director Sarah Halley Finn to the studio brass was what finally persuaded them to move forward with Downey Jr. In a different world, without that push, Iron Man might have been played by Tom Cruise, who was associated with the project for years. That’s right: Tony Stark was nearly played by the Top Gun star!We may like to think the actors who play ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ are irreplaceable, but many of their now-synonymous roles nearly went to other actors. Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, and Chris Pratt were all accomplished actors before their MCU debuts, but none had the worldwide recognition they have now, following 22 films and billion at the global box office. Their casting was a risk in many ways – but one that paid off. If not for talented casting agents, circumstance, and a little luck, the final battle in Avengers: Endgame might have looked very different indeed. As Endgame continues its global box office domination, on track to be the highest-grossing film ever, let s take a look back at what might have been. Here are 10 Avengers castings that could have totally changed the MCU — and perhaps some other franchises.Black Widow, Played by Emily Blunt(Photo by @Warner Bros. Pictures, Merrick Morton/©Paramount, )This is about as near an actual casting as you can get. It s not hard to picture the Edge of Tomorrow star decked out in Natasha s black spandex and sporting her red locks, but contractual obligations and, oddly enough, Meryl Streep thwarted the plan to cast Emily Blunt. When she signed onto The Devil Wears Prada, Blunt had to agree to a two-picture deal. Fox invoked the clause for Jack Black s Gulliver s Travels, and the English actress was forced to turn down the role of the Russian spy who joined the MCU in Iron Man 2. Scarlett Johansson is Black Widow, and we wouldn t have it any other way, but given how fantastic Blunt was as Rita Vrataski it does make us pause to ponder what if  Captain America, Played by John KrasinskiIf nearly having Mary Poppins in black spandex was a jaw-dropper, imagine having Jim Halpert from The Office sporting the star and shield. Since the NBC comedy went off the air in 2013, John Krasinski has done quite a bit of action work. He may be Jack Ryan now in Amazon s series of the same name, but the idea of him playing Captain America in 2011 was harder to picture. Evans was always Marvel s top choice, but he famously turned down the role — twice. While Evans was waffling on the part, the studio proceeded with Kransinski until he and Chris Hemsworth s abs (according to the video above) decided that it was not gonna happen.Doctor Strange, Played by Joaquin Phoenix(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection, @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Joaquin Phoenix s first foray into comic-book movies, Todd Phillips  Joker, has fans almost hyperventilating — but in a different universe, he might have already had some experience in the genre. Back in 2014, it was reported that Phoenix was in final talks to play the sorcerer supreme. Many supposed at the time that the indie favorite turned down the role of Stephen Strange, which eventually went to Benedict Cumberbatch, because he was not interested in big-budget action flicks. (Guessing they must not have seen Gladiator.) In truth, the Walk the Line actor recently admitted that he enjoys some of the MCU films and he isn t a cinephile or snob; in reference to his brush with Doctor Strange, he said,  I think everybody was really happy with how things turned out. Iron Man, played by Nicolas Cage(Photo by Patti Perret/©Alchemy/Courtesy Everett Collection, ©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)When Iron Man was in early development in the 1990s, many at Marvel wanted Tom Cruise to play the role, and it was not the most out-of-left-field casting idea for the character who would become the heart of the Avengers. But believe it or not, Nicolas Cage was also once part of the Tony Stark conversation. A name that invariably pops up with just about every superhero film adaptation — or did at the time — Cage was approached to play everything from the Scarecrow to Superman, and even the Green Goblin. The unabashed comic book obsessive did get to play a superhero in Ghost Rider. While it would be a fun novelty to picture him with the glowing core heart and hear him spouting Tony s clever quips, we feel the the leather-clad flaming-skull bounty hunter for the damned was an infinitely better fit for Cage s over-the-top antics. The Hulk, Played by Edward Norton (again)(Photo by ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)Can you have a reverse near-casting? Edward Norton played the Green Rage Monster and the mild-mannered scientist in the standalone Incredible Hulk film, but was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in the first Avengers team-up. Rumors abounded, of course, with some speculating there was a rift between the American History X actor and Marvel. Marvel Studios co-president Feige released a statement before The Avengers cast was announced at Comic-Con in 2011 that put any speculation to bed: Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble. So Norton was out and Ruffalo in. According to Ruffalo s retelling, he didn t find out until moments before the convention. Had things gone another way, and Norton stayed on as Banner, perhaps fewer people would be confused as to why The Incredible Hulk is officially part of the MCU.Drax, Played by Jason Momoa(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection, @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)No one seemed happier that Jason Momoa was playing Aquaman than Jason Momoa, but he nearly took on an MCU role before picking up the trident. The role of the ultra-literal Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy catapulted Dave Bautista from WWE star to movie megastar, and, according to the former wrestler, he had to fight for it —and was terrified of auditioning. Momoa, who had just wrapped playing the hulking Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones when the movie was being cast, said he was tired of playing brutes and looking out for different roles. After auditioning, our future Aquaman therefore passed on Drax, opening the door for Bautista. Momoa has since said the role of of Drax the Destroyer was perfectly cast. Thor, Played by Liam Hemsworth(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)The Thor casting process was a real family affair. Before he played Gale in The Hunger Games, Liam Hemsworth was on the shortlist to portray the Asgardian God of Thunder. He got to the final four, and Liam joked in a late-night interview that he bombed the last audition. His failure did, however, help his brother snag the part. After Liam s failed test, the two exchanged notes on what they were looking for in the part. Sir Kenneth Branagh was impressed with the older brother s audition, and the relatively unknown Aussie actor was deemed the only one worthy to wield Mjolnir – for a time.Spider-Man, Played by Timothée Chalamet  According to Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet, every up-and-coming young male actor auditioned for the role of Spider-Man. Lucas Hedges, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff all read for the part, but the New York-born Chalamet, who loved the character growing up, was for a time fixated on becoming the iconic web-slinger. While promoting Call Me By Your Name, he recounted his final audition for Spider-Man: Homecoming. “I read twice, and I left sweating in a total panic,” Chalamet said. “I called my agent and I said, ‘I thought about this a lot, and I have to go back and knock on that door and read again,’ and he told me the story of Sean Young and how in an attempt to become Catwoman [she] had scared everyone away when she showed up at the studio gates in costume.” Persuaded not to let his fandom overtake his better judgment, Chalamet left, and Holland was cast instead.Like this? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
s some sort of meta shapeshifter who can take on the form of her adoptive brother and some sort of creature. Also, she may have an interesting diet to maintain her abilities. But as the final two episodes focused on Tobias, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Lala, Grace received little more than a name check in “The Book of the Apocalypse.” It leaves us to wonder who or what she might really be.Back in the comics, Grace was introduced in 2003 as an Amazon who joins a new Outsiders team and, eventually, begins a relationship with Thunder. But since she’s an Amazon in the comics, her powers include super-strength, endurance and an improved healing rate and is a far cry from the Grace evolving on screen. As it happens, her apparent real name – Shay Li Wylde – suggests a connection to the 1990s Outsiders character named Wylde. He was, to a coin a term, a “werebear” and much like Grace (we’re going to use her chosen name for herself), had limited control of his powers as well. Hopefully, the third season will focus more time on her secret and offer her the opportunity to become more than an occasional guest character. Will Tobias Be Running the Pit By the Season 3 Premiere?(Photo by Bob Mahoney/The CW)Watching Black Lightning and Lightning take down Tobias was a particularly satisfying moment of the program’s second season. But we’re already wondering how long it can last. Tobias is a slippery customer and subordinates are drawn to him – even if they should know better (R.I.P., Todd Green). To us, it suggests Tobias will soon be running the ASA’s black site despite everything the watch commander told him in the closing moments of season 2. The Pit, more than anything else, looks like the sort of crucible Tobias Whale thrives in. It is just a question of time.It is also a question of Tobias’s ill-defined abilities. While Dr. Jace (Jennifer Riker) created the serum which slowed his aging to a crawl, its side effects are not completely known. He seems to be bullet-proof and super strong, but it is unclear if these powers are derived from the serum – and therefore need a constant dosage to be maintained – or if they are inherent like Black Lightning’s abilities. If the latter, he will have no problem setting up a new empire from within the Pit. He may even find a new class of willing accomplices to throw at his arch enemy. How Will the Pierces Take to Being ASA Assets?(Photo by Eliza Morse/The CW)In the last moments of the finale, Odell deputizes Jeff, Jen, and Anissa into the ASA to fight the coming war against Markovia. Presumably, Freeland will be the battleground and the other surviving Pod Kids (and probably Khalil) will form a sort of ersatz Outsiders. Well, other Greg Berlanti–produced superhero shows on The CW would go that way, but Black Lighting eschews much of the Arrowverse’s rhyme and meter for its own storytelling style.Nonetheless, it is clear the Pierces, now known to the ASA as metas, will have to deal with the agency in order to retain some modicum of their freedom. It is probably the very thing Odell believes will keep them in line. He used a similar tactic on Lynn (Christine Adams) throughout the second season. One imagines it will work for a time, even on Jennifer, but eventually Odell may find he needs more extreme measures; much in the same way he forced Wendy (Madison Bailey) into exerting much more of her abilities during a test.Of course, the Lightning Family may still have one ace to play: Odell is seemingly unaware of Gambi (James Remar). He is still technically dead as he never found the culprits of the attempt on his life, which means the ASA may not have tabs on him. Assuming none of the Pierces addressed their man in the chair by name after Odell began spying on them, Gambi may prove vital to their escape from ASA control. These are just a few of the things Black Lighting left us to ponder. There are other issues like the corruption Henderson (Damon Gupton) still faces within the Freeland PD. If working for the ASA takes up more of his time, Jeff may have to leave Garfield High behind again, imperiling its future. And then there’s Lala, whose living Hell may actually lead to some sort of redemption in the end. Black Lightning introduced a lot of interesting ideas – even if they are not always served well – and we can’t wait to see what becomes of them next year.

90 Best Computer-Animated Movies Ranked by TomatometerEver since the 1995 release of Toy Story, when feature animation bounded from paper reams and into the domain of the digital, it s been to infinity and beyond in creative storytelling. We ve traveled the sky by house and balloon (Up), crossed dimensions with Spider-Man (Into the Spider-Verse), swam the deepest oceans (Finding Nemo) while learning the value of family along with super glue (The Lego Movie). In these feats of imagination, Cars rule the world, superheroes and villains can turn their lives around (The Incredibles, Despicable Me), and a squirrel chasing an acorn becomes a Sisyphean myth. It s where we can believe in fairy tales again (Frozen, Brave) while having a good laugh at their expense (Shrek). We ve also witnessed processed meats do some things in Sausage Party we d rather not speak of again.A whole industry of is supported by this medium, including the previously mentioned Pixar, Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age), Illumination (The Secret Life of Pets), and Sony Pictures Animation (Hotel Transylvania). And let s not forget DreamWorks Animation (How to Train Your Dragon), whose latest film Trolls World Tour, which broke streaming records when it went straight to on-demand, skipping theatrical.Wherever the story takes us from , we ve ranked the most critically approved films  of the genre in our list of the best-reviewed computer-animated movies. Each entry had to reach at least 20 reviews before we put them up for consideration, where we then ranked them by Tomatometer. So, enjoy our guide to the 90 best computer-animated movies ever made.

Following a misstep with an attempted cinematic universe, the Universal Classic Monsters brand is on the rebound with a new, “Hitchcockian” version of The Invisible Man. According to the first reviews of the horror remake, going smaller in budget and more topical in its story was the best decision. Well, aside from casting Elisabeth Moss in the lead as the woman being terrorized by the titular foe, an abusive ex-husband with the power to be unseeable even the few negative-leaning takes on the movie celebrate her performance. Is it also scary enough? Will its effects wow you? Do its currently relevant themes resonate? We break it all down below. Here’s what critics are saying about The Invisible Man:Is it a worthy remake? The Invisible Man demands to be seen, because this is the right way to reboot a horror movie.  William Bibbiani, The WrapIt’s everything a remake should be, and then some… One of the best things you will see this year.  Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportThe Invisible Man is respectful to the classic Universal monster movie with which it shares its name, but this is no reverential retread.  Philip De Semlyen, Time OutThe Invisible Man is a superb genre effort that absolutely deserves to be seen.  Anthony O Connor, FilmInkThis new The Invisible Man is no fun.  Armond White, National ReviewDoes it honor H.G. Wells original story?A truly arresting, up-to-the-moment take on old material that makes it feel as fresh and new as if it had been conceived today. Huw Fullerton, Radio TimesThe new version has so little to do with H.G. Wells’ original story that Wells doesn’t seem to be credited. Anywhere. At all. Not even a Special Thank You. Maybe he turned invisible too. William Bibbiani, The WrapIf Blumhouse had integrity, it would have honored H. G. Wells’ thesis that mankind’s inherent narcissism implicates us all. Armond White, National Review(Photo by Universal Pictures)What does it do for the Universal Classic Monsters brand?Does the legacy proud… We finally have a Universal Monster to be scared of again. Norman Gidney, HorrorBuzz[It’s] a successful restart to Universal s attempts to bring its classic monsters into the modern era. Ian Sandwell, Digital SpyWhere Universal’s monsters are concerned, let’s hope we see more of its like. Kevin Harley, Total FilmIf they wind up all being as exceptional as Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, we have many years of fantastic horror cinema ahead of us. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendWhat will it remind us of?The Invisible Man delivers Hitchcock levels of tension, suspense and outright terror. Edward Douglas, The Weekend WarriorThere’s something Hitchcockian about the way this The Invisible Man plays out. John Nugent, Empire Magazine[Cecilia’s] moments of lucidity and positive intent become increasingly dominated by degrees of disorientation and general out-of-it-ness in ways that remind of some Hitchcock heroines, notably Ingrid Bergman in Notorious. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterThe Hitchcock glamour and attention to detail are there… I am a huge Hitchcock fan which I think added to my enjoyment of this movie. Grace Randolph, Beyond the Trailer(Photo by Universal Pictures)Is it scary? It puts you right on edge from the get-go and sets up the prospect of how the ordinary can be terrifying. Ian Sandwell, Digital SpyThe idea of Elisabeth Moss stalking around a dark attic with a flashlight may not seem particularly scary, but trust me – in Whannell’s hands, it is. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmI got so scared, a couple of times I had to look away from the screen, which was hilariously ironic, because of course this is a movie about an invisible man — there’s nothing to see up there. Grace Randolph, Beyond the TrailerShots of nothing portend everything. This subtle approach is incredibly effective, and a reminder of how horror doesn’t always have to be frantic to raise dread. John Nugent, Empire MagazineThe Invisible Man lacks for truly terrifying moments. The film plays more like a thriller than a horror. Jude Dry, IndieWireThe debate will rage over whether to call this a horror movie. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportEither way, is it intense?Leigh Whannell, who created some incredible unique action sequences in his last movie, Upgrade, goes whole hog when it comes to the Invisible Man attack sequences. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThe writer-director well knows how to pace and space his revelations and jolts, how much to show and how much to withhold. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterThe big action spectacles, when we get there, feel worth the wait, as the filmmakers know when to ramp up the dazzling invisible man effects and when to pull them back. Angie Han, Mashable(Photo by Universal Pictures)How are the effects? The visual effects are flawless. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThey could easily create any invisible effect with modern technology, but Whannell knows that less is more. Fred Topel, Showbiz CheatSheetThe special effects work can look somewhat hokey. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportIs it a more character-driven effort?Moss, Hodge Reid and Kass are all open, inviting actors who earn our investment in their emotions and dilemmas. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterWith steady character work banking our investment, Whannell tightens the screws to scare. Kevin Harley, Total FilmHow is Elisabeth Moss? She delivers one of the best performances of her career. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendIt’s a captivating and empathetic performance that’s easily her best mainstream cinematic effort to date. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportShe is absolutely magnificent, so haunting to watch. Sharronda Williams, Pay or WaitElisabeth Moss is absolutely mesmerizing… The movie is a great showcase for what she’s capable of as an actor. Edward Douglas, The Weekend WarriorThat it works quite as well as it does is down in no small part to Moss herself, who comm

But I was looking for something that I could connect to more viscerally, and that I could experiment with a more physical and visceral process.Part of the message of the film, as you point out, is about slowing down and being at peace with the silence, being okay with recalibrating one’s priorities. Do you find it resonates differently now, in that sense, than when you first read the script and shot it?Ahmed: Yeah, I feel like it resonates differently for a few reasons. You know, one is that obviously when you re in the thick of something you can t see the edges of it. I knew that Darius had such a bold and such a specific vision; everything from wanting to shoot chronologically to the really unique sound design – which was put together in such an experimental and ambitious way, sampling sounds from my own internal body processes to create this very subjective effect – to the fact he wanted to shoot on film. I knew that he had a particular vision. But seeing it all come together is all the more mind-blowing. I m just a little bit in awe of what Darius has pulled together with such little time and money. And then I think why it resonates differently is because of the pandemic. I think the pandemic is a time where many of us have lost our routines and access to our work, through which many of us define ourselves, and have been forced to kind of sit with ourselves. Sit still and sit in silence. And that s absolutely what Ruben is forced to go through. So I kind of feel like everyone s going through their own version of Ruben s purgatory that he goes through in the film.(Photo by © Amazon Prime Video)Speaking of our current predicament, I wanted to ask how it feels to be promoting a film like this one without, say, theater screenings where you’d get more of an immediate connection with audiences. How does that feel on your end?Ahmed: Oh, it feels a bit heartbreaking, to be honest, because one of the joys, I think, of the Toronto premiere for this film was deaf and hearing audiences experiencing the film together, which is something you often can t do. There s open captions in every print of the film. That means that there is no screening of this where deaf audiences can t also watch the film alongside hearing audiences. That was really, really powerful. It s amazing how a piece of work can be a bridge in that way and create conversations between communities that might normally be quite segregated.I watched Mogul Mowgli recently and it strikes me that it and Sound of Metal are sort of sibling films. Mowgli follows a British-Pakistani rapper about to get a big break only to find himself coping with a debilitating autoimmune disease that stops him in his tracks and forces him to wrestle with his heritage and his legacy. They re so different, both in style and in theme, but they feel like they re speaking to one another. Do they feel that way to you? Ahmed: Yeah, it s interesting. I mean, Mogul Mowgli is something that I was kind of shaping with Bassam [Tariq] for a couple of years before we made it, and Sound of Metal came along in that moment. So I guess my headspace was already in this kind of zone where I was thinking about like, Why do we do what we do? And what s it for? What am I doing, basically? I think I was hitting a bit of a wall in my process where I kind of wanted to find a new way to work. I didn t feel I was growing as much as I could be.Alongside that, I was kind of wondering what the point of any of this is, you know, when the world seems to be falling apart all around us. I was interested in exploring this question, and I think, you know, for Ruben, it s coming from a place of: Why do I do what I do? Is it because it s a distraction from having to sit with myself? Is it a distraction from having to deal with my demons? That my relationship with my creative obsession is a way of staying busy and looking everywhere but inside? For Zed in Mogul Mowgli, it s coming at that question saying, Are we doing this for ego? Are we doing this for a sense of legacy? Are we doing this because we want to kind of come down from the mountain like Moses? I guess, a question I was just grappling with is: What s the point? Why are we doing what we re doing, as artists or creatives? (Photo by © Amazon Prime Video)Do you find yourself armed with better answers to those questions after working on these projects?Ahmed: Well, something I realized in the research for Sound of Metal, and being around these punk drummers and metal drummers with big scary tattoos and piercings and angry loud music, was understanding some of the traumas behind that music, some of the catharsis in that music. I think, for me, a big part of why I m doing this and something that has led me to create a more personal place is to try and name your pain. Name the pain that made you so you can heal others, you know? There’s this great kind of interlude somber start of this recent J. Cole track, “The Climb Back,” that says: What are you doing this for? Are you doing this to get things, or to let them go? — I like to think maybe I m trying to embrace the idea of letting go, and allowing that to inform the process.Which can be very hard, and it feels counterintuitive to how we ve normally understood ideas of success.Ahmed: Yes. And it s very tricky because the creative craft and the creative industry stand in opposition in terms of what they demand from you. A creative craft is about a state of flow where you negate your ego, transcend your ego, and are in a receptive state and a state of emptiness, really, so you can be an open vessel for what the canvas wants you to paint on it. Or what the beat wants you to rap onto it. And the creative industries are very much about enforcing and building up your ego and communicating a very kind of posterized self-image to the world, which isn t a receptive state. It s a state of pushing. It s a state of armor. And so, there s always this tension between the creative craft and creative careerism. They’re always kind of engaged in a bit of a dance. Finally, I wanted to talk about the way music is so central to these projects. I feel like when you’re talking about finding an artistry that feels personal I keep thinking about an album like The Long Goodbye, which you released last year, or a song like “Once Kings,” which was tied to Mogul Mowgli’s release. Is music a way to unlock these other aspects of your work?Ahmed: I think the way you do anything is the way you do everything. So I think there s been an evolution in the way I approach music, as well as acting recently. I think, that with music I might have thought more about what I can contribute to the wider culture or what my community or my people might want from me or what my 18-year-old self wished existed and kind of trying to cater to that from a place that felt authentic and honest to me, but very much with one eye on the outside. David Bowie says that younger artists play to the gallery. I think now I m thinking more about just what I need to get off my chest. I think there s a real shift even from the Swet Shop Boys to The Long Goodbye, which is more personal, more emotional. And then from The Long Goodbye even to “Once Kings,” in terms of thinking more about how you can name your pains and share them with others in a way that might be healing. Rather than try and represent others, just present yourself, which, I think, takes time.Sound of Metal is available now on Amazon Prime. On an Apple device? Check out Seoul Station, an animated prequel to Busan, directed by the same guy, Yeon Sang-ho. He was primarily an animation director before Busan (that was his live-action debut), and he followed that up with 2018 s Psychokinesis, his take on the superhero genre which also had a father-and-daughter relationship driving the plot. Yeon will be back in 2020 with Peninsula, another story set in the world of Train to Busan. For more from South Korean, consider checking out Rampant, a period piece action epic about – true to history, we re sure – a zombie outbreak. Deranged and The Wailing are also about illness and outbreak in contemporary SK. (For more quality choices from the region, see our list of 30 Certified Fresh South Korean movies.)If you re really into the whole train setting, seek out Snowpiercer, directed by Parasite s Bong Joon-ho, The Cassandra Crossing, about a biological weapon that may have been set loose in the caboose, and Howl, wherein a passenger train and its riders have to deal with an outbreak of werewolves.Zombie godfather George A. Romero spent his career exploring the different stages of undead chaos: from infection, to pandemic, to normalization. His last great film, Land of the Dead, explored the latter, depicting society that had tenuously adapted to a new, dark way of living. Carriers, The Road, and The Crazies (a remake of a Romero movie) are further entertaining, credible looks at society-destroying diseases in America.Of course, if you consider yourself a Train to Busan fan, you might also think of yourself an adventurous movie-watcher, ready for pandemic and outbreak movies beyond the borders of America. To that, we ve assembled suggestions from the UK (28 Weeks Later, Children of Men, The Girl With All The Gifts), Japan (I Am a Hero), France (Ravenous, The Night Eats the World), Germany (Rammbock: Berlin Undead), and Spain ([REC]).

Ghcxuf Sundance may be famous for setting the terms of the indie film conversation of the year, but the film festival also serves as a launching platform for new horror voices that become successes later on. As the home to Hereditary, The Babadook, Get Out, and The Blair Witch Project, the Sundance Midnight program has a bit of a reputation, leaving this year’s selection with some pretty big shoes to fill. This year, genre spread to other sections of the programming, as fans needn’t have stayed up late at the Park City Library to catch some disturbing or just plain weird movies. No matter what your favorite genre is, you were bound to find something up your alley, from unusual documentaries to scary movies to fantastical comedies. And the good news is that distributors and streaming services are likely to snatch them up and make them available to you soon, with some of them already on the way. With expectations high, the question of what will be this year’s Hereditary-style hit is constantly brought up. We checked out the films competing to become this year’s big breakout hit, and rounded up what the critics were saying, so you can begin preparing your watchlists of what Sundance films are most likely to make a big impression once they get released. His House (2020) 100%(Photo by Aidan Monaghan courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDNetflix’s big acquisition at Sundance is this tale of horror both supernatural and human. His House tells the story of a refugee couple who flee the horrors of the South Sudan civil war and come to England to start a new life. What they find is something that doesn’t want them there, with the very walls of the house exuding a sinister vibe. What makes the film truly special is how it balances the supernatural horrors of a haunted house movie with a poignant and equally devastating immigration story of survivor’s guilt. As Benjamin Lee wrote for The Guardian, “The haunting that takes place is one that’s tied to something that feels real.” Netflix will release His House some time later this year, and once it does, you can expect a movie that will make audiences scream, all while getting people to empathize with a refugee couple’s story by way of a haunted apartment,” as RogerEbert.com’s Nick Allen puts it.Save Yourselves! (2020) 89%(Photo by Matt Clegg courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDWe are all obsessed with our phones; there’s no denying that. But what happens if we try to distance ourselves from the internet for a short time? According to Save Yourselves!, you may miss an alien invasion. Su (Sunita Mani) and Jack (John Paul Reynolds) are a hip Millennial couple, ruled by the technology at their disposal. When Su suggests they get away without technology in order to cleanse themselves during a life-reaffirming week, they find themselves having to fight off adorable poof-like aliens that remind us of a cuter version of Critters, as the rest of the world is already under attack. Rachel Wagner from Rachel Reviews writes that the film “is not only a very funny look at modern Millennial life but a sweet romance of a couple who become stronger through facing off with aliens.” Save Yourselves! is currently looking for distribution.Relic (2020) 92%(Photo by Jackson Finter courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDThe best horror often manages to be both a terrifying piece of entertainment and a poignant commentary on our reality. A remarkable debut by Natalie Erika James, Relic turns the haunted house story on its head, using the horror genre to tell an emotional story of dementia. Australian stage legend Robyn Nevin gives a terrifying yet emotionally devastating performance as a woman whose mind and body is slowly failing her, while a strange and eerie presence haunts her home. “Like Mike Flanagan before her”, writes Film School Rejects Rob Hunter, “Natalie Erika James flawlessly blends terrifying horror with the ache of humanity.” Rest assured, when Relic finally gets released, it will make you scream before it pulls on your heart strings.Run Sweetheart Run (2020) 73%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: BlumhouseRelease Date: TBDBlumhouse returns to Sundance with its second “Sweetheart”-titled movie in Run Sweetheart Run. Like last year’s Sweetheart, this movie finds a young woman having to go toe-to-toe with an inhuman monster, as we follow Ella Balinska’s Cherie on her first date in a while. The problem is that her date turns out less than stellar, and she is forced to run through the streets of Los Angeles for an entire night to escape the blood-loving monster she mistook for a chance at romance. Though critics note that the metaphors are thinly-veiled at best, Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro writes that “Run Sweetheart Run makes for an entertaining and cheeky trip centered around woman’s curse.”Bad Hair (2020) 62%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDA social thriller starring a killer weave, Bad Hair is a campy throwback to 80s horror B-movies with a whole lot on its mind. Writer-director Justin Simien returns to Sundance with a film about the importance of and controversy surrounding hair in the Black community, focusing on a lowly assistant at a TV show who gets a new hairstyle that helps her move up in her career – with some deadly, bloodthirsty consequences. Writing for That Shelf, Victor Stiff explains that the film “is a delightful horror dramedy that interrogates black women’s struggle to be true to themselves in the face of a system hellbent on snuffing out their blackness.” Bad Hair is looking for distribution.Possessor: Uncut (2020) 94%(Photo by Karim Hussain courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDPlaying like a horror version of Inception, Brandon Cronenberg (yes, son of David) takes us on a disturbing, bloody nightmare that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. The film stars Andrea Riseborough as a contract killer whose consciousness gets implanted into others so she can control them into committing murders for hire that is, until she finds herself struggling to control a particularly difficult body. This is a movie that’s not for the faint of heart, as Slashfilm’s Chris Evangelista writes: “This isn’t a work designed to thrill and entertain. Instead, it’s meticulously crafted to horrify. The violence on display here is graphic to the extreme, yet it never feels cartoonish.” While the violence and blood may be too much for some viewers, critics agree that this film is a unique experience worth seeing; as Rob Hunter writes for Film School Rejects, Possessor “is fantastically and cruelly unforgettable.” Keep an eye out for Possessor as it looks for distribution.Into the Deep (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDThe rare documentary to play at the midnight slot, this bone-chilling film started as an homage to Danish amateur inventor Peter Madsen before turning into an exploration of evil when Madsen murdered and dismembered Swedish journalist Kim Wall during the time the doc was being shot. Emma Sullivan’s Into the Deep features stunning footage both pre-murder and in its immediate aftermath, dealing with the shock of the filmmakers realizing what kind of subject they’re following as their film begins to resemble something akin to a horror flick. Writing for Vanyaland, Nick Johnston says, “Into the Deep is a unique beast in a documentary landscape that’s more consumed than ever with the true-crime genre, and it is a must-watch for anyone even slightly curious about the events of this bizarre and tragic crime.” Netflix will release Into the Deep later this year. The Night House (2020) 87%(Photo by Elisha Christian courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Searchlight PicturesRelease Date: TBDLike A Quiet Place in 2018, The Night House relies on sound to create a terrifying horror experience that will make your bones vibrate. After the loss of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) begins to spend her nights plagued by strange dreams and creepy noises around the house. Critics spoke highly of Hall’s performance, with Birth.Movies.Death’s Ed Travis calling her a “scream queen.” They also commended the string of jump scares that shook audiences at the fest; Bloody Disgusting s Meagan Navarro explains “[the film] leaves you breathless and your heart pumping hard.” Searchlight Pictures bought the distribution rights for the film and will be releasing at a later date.Scare Me (2020) 82%(Photo by Brendan Banks courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: ShudderRelease Date: TBDNo matter how elaborate or grand a horror movie is, the scariest memories most of us have still belong to the nights we spent as youngsters listening to scary stories after dark. Scare Me takes the tale of an aspiring horror screenwriter trapped in a snowy cabin with a best-selling horror novelist telling each other stories and turns it into an exploration of the creative process and even gender politics, all while delivering a minimalist yet still spooky experience. As Daily Dead’s Heather Wixson writes, “Scare Me is an absolute delight and a real gift for both horror fans as well as those of us who can’t get enough of hearing a good story. ” Shudder will release Scare Me at a later date.Spree (2020) 67%(Photo by Rylan Perry courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: RLJE FilmsRelease Date: TBDEugene Kotlyarenko’s Spree asks, What if Joker was a streamer and wannabe influencer? The thriller-comedy, which is shot found-footage style, features Joe Keery doing his best Arthur Fleck impersonation as a guy obsessed with becoming internet famous by streaming a night of violent mayhem. It s a commentary on our collective obsession with social media, privilege, and the darkness of comment sections. What makes the film more than just a Black Mirror episode is how it infuses jokes and gags into the horror – and then seems to ask why we re laughing. Nick Allen wrote for RogerEbert.com that “Spree brilliantly shows influencer culture for the totally demented lifestyle that it is.” RLJE Films will release Spree later this year.Like this? bob官方下载链接 Though Marvel Entertainment’s television division did a great job bringing aspects of the Marvel universe to the small screen with shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil, the early promise of clear connections back to the films never really materialized. Beyond S.H.I.E.L.D. using the twist from Captain America: The Winter Soldier in its first season to change the nature of the show, the programs rarely made mention of film events and never featured appearances from the movies’ title characters (or vice-versa).But that is about to change. Marvel Studios now controls television projects directly. And the first series under this new arrangement, WandaVision, is set to debut on January 15, 2021, and unlike Runaways or Cloak Dagger, it stars marquee Avengers in a story with deep ties to the events of the films.Despite Marvel Studios’ well-known cone of secrecy, we know a few things about the project. So let’s take a look at those details and try to guess how Marvel will change the face of its TV universe with WandaVision.[Updated on 11/12/20]It Stars Scarlet Witch And Vision, And More From the MCU(Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)Click image to see full poster in a new tab. The most obvious connection to the films is right in the name: it stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff (a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch) and Paul Bettany as Vision. The latter character was seemingly killed in the final reel of Avengers: Infinity War, so the series starts with a question: Is Vision alive? In fact, the question forms a key part of the trailer Disney+ released during the 2020 Emmy Awards. The program will also feature Kathryn Hahn as Agnes – more on that in a moment – and see the return of Thor’s Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis and Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Randall Park as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo. The series will also feature another returning Marvel Cinematic Universe figure in a new form: Teyonah Parris will star as a grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, the character played by child actor Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel. That mixture of talent is, in its own way, quite eclectic and telling of what the show might be. Parris’s Rambeau is consistent with a contemporary setting, while the return of Darcy and Woo suggest Wanda’s new adventure has some government intrigue. But perhaps the setting is something we should consider on its own.It Counts As A Phase 4 MCU Tale(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Unlike the previous Marvel TV efforts, WandaVision is part of the MCU’s “Phase” calendar system. As Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed at the company’s 2019 Comic-Con International: San Diego presentation, the series is part of Phase 4, which counts the feature films released from next year’s Black Widow to 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will feature Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. Phase 4 will also include the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and the animated series What If..!? – although the canonicity of that last series is up for debate as it will tell alternative versions of established MCU history.Curiously, WandaVision leapfrogged The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in September with Disney+ featuring the former in a late 2020 sizzle reel video and the recent trailer. Falcon, one of the few series to resume production after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, is said to have slid into a 2021 launch window after missing its original August release plan. That switch suggests both series may have a certain flexibility in what overarching Phase 4 information they contain although, in a recent EW interview, Feige said close MCU watchers will find a wealth of rewards waiting for you as it all unfolds. At the very least, events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have little-to-no impact on WandaVision, even if both programs set up something for the larger world. In previous interviews, Feige said WandaVision – set after the events of Avengers: Endgame – will have a far-reaching impact on Phase 4 and establish the Scarlet Witch name. With that time frame in mind, we know Vision is definitely dead from our point of view. So is Wanda using the healing power of laughter to cope with the loss? It’s Also A Family Sitcom(!?)Ryan FujitaniThe few glimpses Marvel and Disney+ have offered look like a pastiche of family sitcoms from different eras. Indeed, even the first info about the series at last year’s D23 Expo featured a soundbite from The Dick Van Dyke Show. Subsequent trailers saw Wanda transforming from a black-and-white 1950s housewife into an updated version of the archetype across the rest of the 20th century. The recent trailer even makes a meal out of the arrival of color.During that D23 presentation, Feige and showrunner Jac Schaeffer alluded to the series having a different feel and look – and few things are further from the Marvel Studios house style than a three-camera sitcom. At the very least, though, it gives fans the chance to see Olsen and Bettany in comic-book–accurate Scarlet Witch and Vision costumes. For his part, Bettany said the story is so funny and it just ends up being this huge epic. According to the recent EW interview, the series will begin with Wanda and Vision moving to the black-and-white town of Westview. Their home may look like Rob and Laura’s dwelling from The Dick Van Dyke Show, but the couples’ dilemma is straight out of Bewitched – Wanda must hide her witchy powers and Vision’s synthetic nature from the community. These very 1950s sitcom scenes were even filmed before an actual studio audience. But as Wanda and Vis re-run through the sitcoms of subsequent decades, it becomes clear Westview is not a generic TV town.If we might speculate for a moment, the use of American family sitcom tropes feels right for the character. Considering Wanda was raised in relative isolation alongside her brother Pietro in a Hydra facility, it is entirely possible her notion of a normal family life was informed by watching American sitcoms. As it happens, these sorts of shows were regularly exported across the world in our reality, giving the notion of a Leave It to Beaver nuclear family purchase in real-life Sokovians. Alternatively, Hydra may have been trying to show Wanda what they sought to destroy. Either way, it is clear Wanda is trying to create a family unit of her own using whatever ideas and means available to her.Unless, as the trailer suggests near its end, this is all Vision s doing And It s About Grief(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)The Scarlet Witch of Marvel Comics fame is known for being so powerful that she can alter reality to remove mutants from the world or will children into existence. Though the MCU Wanda has yet to exhibit such an ability, her powers originate from the Infinity Stones and may be strong enough to transport her into various sitcom realities. In fact, a moment late in the trailer sees Monica Rambeau seemingly ejected from a sunny world into a park lit by artificial means. But why would Wanda do all of this? To mourn Vision’s passing, of course. Or, perhaps, to find a way to bring him back.Though rooted in sitcom iconography, the series also appears to be taking several cues from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s Vision comic book miniseries; the writer even suggested as much at a 2019 New York Comic Con panel. In that story, Vision was himself trying to find domestic bliss by building an android family. Virginia, the wife model, had a brain pattern modeled after Wanda and … well, let’s just say things ended badly. Besides her power, comic book Wanda also suffers from various mental illnesses and can be her own worst enemy.Ryan FujitaniFrom the recent interview, we also know the series is inspired, in part, by some very specific Scarlet Witch stories Olsen read before filming 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. If these stories include the time she used magic to have children with Vision or when she changed all of reality to restore their existences – they disappeared when it turned out they were aspects of the demon Mephisto – it is easy to see how Wanda’s ongoing grief might lead to her conjuring a new world to live in.Combining those strands, it is entirely possible the series will be set in the sitcom world and the MCU. In the trailer, Kathryn Hahn is seen as the “nosy neighbor in the 1950s sitcom reality, but her later appearance in the seemingly modern world may be an attempt to wake up Wanda or Vision. If he s still dead, then this version of him may part of her own consciousness. And a powerful but disassociated Scarlet Witch would be a good reason to bring in Monica and Jimmy Woo, who may or may not be a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, into the mix. Then again, there’s another Marvel organization acronym we might be seeing. It Will Introduce S.W.O.R.D. Into The MCU(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)If certain cast lists are to be believed, we will see S.W.O.R.D. agents at some point in the series. The organization debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 2004 as the space-based version of S.H.I.E.L.D., defending Earth from alien incursion or subversion. And if you consider the space fleet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was assembling in the Spider-Man: Far From Home stinger scene, it would seem S.W.O.R.D. has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time. Perhaps Fury’s been building the group since he went off the grid in Winter Soldier. Alternatively, it may be something he whipped together with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in the time since Endgame. Either way, it is easy to see why Wanda’s power would be valuable to him and to S.W.O.R.D.And from the trailer, its clear some organization with deep resources is keeping tabs on whatever is happening to Wanda and Vision. It’s Set To Be A Winter Treat, And Will Likely Last Just One SeasonRyan FujitaniThough always intended to run after The Falcon and the Winter Solider, WandaVision held to a late 2020/early 2021 launch for much of its development, with it officially premiering on Disney+ on January 15, 2021. Thanks to the September sizzle reel and the subsequent trailer, we fully expected it to take The Mandalorian’s place as your must-watch streaming program after the Star Wars series concludes December 18. But it seems the real-life pressures of making a television series pushed the program s debut into the new year. Considering the much longer delays for Black Widow and Eternals, a handful of weeks isn t too much longer to wait.Like The Mandalorian and other Disney+ originals, the series will stream weekly. Consisting of six episodes, it is also expected to be the only season of WandaVision. Indeed, all of the Phase 4 Disney+ shows were initially pitched as limited series. We assume the format made it more attractive to the actors, who would know from the get-go there would be no long-term commitments to a television show. Then again, with the Phase 5 shows like She-Hulk being pitched as more traditional, multi-season ideas – and with the Loki series reportedly revving up for a second year – it is always possible WandaVision will return. Maybe she’ll transport herself and Vision to cop shows next time. You know you want to see Vision with a greasy comb-over.

(Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images/Wizards of the Coast)Netflix has announced that an animated Magic: The Gathering series is in the works, executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, hot off their MCU crescendo with Avengers: Endgame. At the same time, Magic, the card game, resolved a decades-long story in May with an all-hands-on-deck epic battle, drawing parallels to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And that s not where the overlap between these two franchises ends. But first we ll get into what exactly Magic: The Gathering is, and why creative guidance from the Russo brothers is a match made in mana heaven. So What s Magic: The Gathering?(Photo by Netflix)Magic: The Gathering is the original trading card game, released in 1993. Players assume the role of powerful wizards called planeswalkers, and eliminate opponents. This is achieved by drawing mana from natural resources and converting that energy into casting spells, creating creatures who do your bidding, and even summoning other planeswalkers. All of these are represented as individual Magic cards. Players create their own deck of cards, draw one card a time into their hand, and take turns performing actions in a dynamic mix of poker bluffs and RPG tabletop.Magic is released in sets typically every three months, each introducing hundreds of newly designed cards into the ecosystem. Sets can teleport players to new fantastic worlds: Magic takes place in a multiverse of disconnected planes you as a planeswalker have the ability to travel to these different realities. And sets can begin a new story, or continue a previous one. Some cards depict the set s lore and plot directly, often with a regular cast of planeswalkers and characters who drive Magic s overarching story, along with tie-in novels and short stories. Why The Russos Brothers Are A Great Magic Match(Photo by Wizards of the Coast) If we can t protect the earth, you can be damn sure we ll gatewatch it. bob官方下载链接 You may be thinking to yourself, Why is Danny Boyle directing a jukebox musical rom-com? It s a fair question, considering the director s previous output, but when you ve had the kind of career he s enjoyed, you re entitled to branch out a bit. That said, the reception to Yesterday so far has been somewhat lukewarm, despite its good intentions. Himesh Patel stars here as Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter who suffers an accident and wakes from a coma to find that the world he now inhibits has conveniently forgotten all about the Beatles. Equipped with this knowledge, Jack passes off the Fab Four s catalogue of hits as his own to rise to pop stardom, but risks losing his best friend and potential love interest Ellie (Lily James) in the process. Critics say Yesterday leans hard into the schmaltzier feel-good aspects of the story (penned by rom-com specialist Richard Curtis), and some of the intriguing questions that arise from the film s fantastical premise are sadly under-explored. But the film benefits from a great cast, which includes Kate McKinnon as a deadpan record exec and Ed Sheeran in a self-deprecating cameo, and it should be a charming enough diversion for a summer weekend.
