The 33 Best Boxing Movies of All TimePugilists have been popular camera subjects since the start boxing, at the time, being arguably the most interesting thing you do to another person in public. In the odd century-plus that s passed since, boxing cinema has evolved past mere punching for spectacle. It s about personal toil. Training. Strength. Sacrifice. Undying commitment to the physical vision. And then it s about hitting somebody for money. Or respect, sure.Tonight s title bout: The best-reviewed boxing movies ever! In one corner, we have heavyweight classics like Rocky and Raging Bull. In the other, hungry newcomers like Creed and Million Dollar Baby. And in another corner (we have a lot of corners): hard-hitting documentaries, repped by When We Were Kings and Unforgivable Blackness. And, yes, we re going international in this corner: see Knuckle all the way from Ireland, and China Heavyweight, all the way from, er, China. To be a contender, the movie needed to put up a Fresh rating after 20 reviews, before we ranked them with our weighted formula calculating a film s Tomatometer score, its number of reviews, and year of release.Think you got what it takes to take on the champs? Hit em where it counts! Hit em right in the 33 Best Boxing Movies of All Time! What happens when the sounds of Eminem and Jay-Z, The Little Mermaid, and Ricky Martin collide in one of the most brilliant musical minds of our generation? You get the incredible output of Hamilton lyricist, composer, and star Lin-Manuel Miranda. The multiple Tony and Grammy winner, whose rap-musical phenomenon Hamilton lands on Disney+ this July – with a 100% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score, no less – has created some of the most stirring and memorable songs of the last decade, both on stage and screen. Beyond Hamilton itself, and his debut musical In the Heights before that, Miranda composed the soaring earworm “How Far I’ll Go” for Moana, a tune for the cantina scene in J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens (lyrics in Huttese), and more. You can witness the evolution of his style in the new 100% Fresh documentary We Are Freestyle Love Supreme. With the whole world about to settle into a front-row seat to Hamilton, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with Miranda for an extended, in-depth dissection of the influences on his music and breakdowns of the complex construction of some of the best songs he’s produced. Want to know what boy band 98 Degrees has to do with In The Heights showstopper “96,000”? Or how he constructed “un-f—kwithable,” super-dense couplets for “My Shot”? Or why he had to stay a night in his childhood bedroom to find the right feel for How Far I ll Go ?Miranda goes deep in our exclusive extended interview.Hamilton is available to stream on Disney+ now.

This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering titles like Black Adam, The Little Mermaid, Rin Tin Tin, and Uncharted. This WEEK S TOP STORYNICOLAS CAGE TO PLAY NICOLAS CAGE IN MOVIE ABOUT NICOLAS CAGE (Photo by NurPhoto/Getty Images)Just a couple of weeks ago, Ocbtober 29 marked the 20th anniversary of the release of Being John Malkovich (Certified Fresh at 93%), a movie that was meta before that word was even in common parlance. Given how well it was received, it s a little surprising more films like it (Jean-Claude Van Damme s JCVD, for example) haven t been made, but we may finally get the mother of all meta films in the near future. After a surprisingly active auction, Lionsgate has won the rights to a meta drama called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, about a famous Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage. Lionsgate is now in talks with a famous Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage to take on the role, who is described as being the star of Face/Off, Con Air, Mandy, Color Out of Space, and the upcoming Lionsgate meta drama The Unberable Weight of Massive Talent. Specifically, Cage will play a version of himself who is trying to get a role in Quentin Tarantino s next film and who also occasionally talks to an egotistical 1990s version of himself who rides him for making too many crappy movies and for not being a star anymore. It is not yet known if Quentin Tarantino will cast Nicolas Cage in his next movie. Nicolas Cage will also reprise his caveman role in The Croods 2 (12/23/2020), and might return as the voice of Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Verse 2 (4/8/2022).Other Top Headlines1. BOOGIE NIGHTS DIRECTOR RETURNING TO 1970s SAN FERNANDO VALLEY (Photo by Laurie Sparham /© Focus Features)Back in 1997, New Line Cinema released Boogie Nights (Certified Fresh at 93%), the second film from writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, who went on to work on such movies as Magnolia (Certified Fresh at 83%), Punch-Drunk Love (Certified Fresh at 80%), There Will Be Blood (Certified Fresh at 91%), and last year s Phantom Thread (Certified Fresh at 91%). Put another way, P.T. Anderson s films have only ever scored a Tomatometer below 83% once (73% for Inherent Vice). For his next film, Anderson appears to be returning to his roots with a project that bears similiarities to both Boogie Nights and Magnolia. Described as an ensemble piece, the untitled project will reportedly be set in the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s and focus on a high school student who is also a successful child actor. Filming is expected to start in February, so we should start hearing casting announcements soon.2. MOON KNIGHT, MS. MARVEL, AND SHE-HULK ALL HEADING TO MARVEL MOVIES AFTER DISNEY+(Photo by Disney XD/Getty Images)The new Disney+ app launched this week, but we won t see the first Marvel Studios series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, until late next year. Like that series, the first batch of Marvel shows on Disney+ are mostly going to feature MCU characters who first appeared in the movies (WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye), but the next batch announced after those shows are for three characters that will make their debuts on Disney+: Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk. This week, Kevin Feige confirmed that all three of those characters will go on to appear in Marvel Studios movies after first making their debuts in their Disney+ shows. Feige didn t specify which movies they ll appear in, but Ms. Marvel seems likely to co-star in the inevitable Captain Marvel sequel. As for where the other two might show up, She-Hulk was a long-time member of the Fantastic Four in the comics (as well as the female-centric A-Force), and Moon Knight has been a member of both West Coast Avengers and Secret Avengers (if either of those teams are likely to ever get their own movies). You can read more about the Disney+ shows for Moon Knight here and She-Hulk here.3. DWAYNE JOHNSON S SHAZAM SPINOFF BLACK ADAM SCHEDULED FOR 2021 (Photo by Ron Phillips/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is such a looming presence on next month s schedule that pretty much no other major franchise entry is daring to take it on (the closest we ll get is Jumani: The Next Level). Likewise, Disney has already claimed December of 2022 for their next mystery Star Wars movie, but that leaves December in both 2020 and 2021 relatively wide open. Disney s own entry for December, 2021 is James Cameron s Avatar 2 (12/17/2021), but that film s juggernaut potential is definitely not a sure thing. Warner Bros. ended up raking in over .14 billion from their December 2018 release Aquaman, so they ve scheduled another DC Comics movie for December, 2021. That movie is Black Adam, the long-in-development anti-hero project starring Dwayne Johnson, who has been in talks to play the character since 2007. Black Adam is now scheduled for December 22, 2021, up against Sherlock Holmes 3, the Wicked movie, and an untitled Disney movie (possibly one of their live-action remakes). The news also came along with our first Black Adam poster, which is basically costume concept art. Paramount Pictures also made a big announcement for December, 2021 this week, as they have come aboard Babylon, the next film from director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash), a 1920s-set Hollywood thriller starring Brad Pitt and Emma Stone. Paramount is scheduling Babylon for an awards season-friendly platform release starting on Christmas Day, 2021 before opening wide two weeks later on January 7, 2022.4. RELATIVE UNKNOWN LANDS PRINCE ERIC ROLE IN THE LITTLE MERMAID REMAKE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Walt Disney Pictures first choice to play Prince Eric in their upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid was pop star Harry Styles of One Direction. Unfortunately, Harry Styles ultimately turned down the role, and it s been two months now since Disney had to find a new Eric. Surprisingly, the studio has decided to go with a relatively unknown young actor named Jonah Hauer-King, whose biggest movie to date was this year s doggie sequel A Dog s Way Home. With the last of the remake s major roles finally cast, director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns) is expected to start filming in early 2020, possibly aiming for a release date in late 2021 or sometime in 2022. Jonah Hauer-King s co-stars in The Little Mermaid will include Awkwafina (Scuttle), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), and Halle Bailey as Ariel, The Little Mermaid herself.
When Does The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Premiere? The series was initially slated to debut in August 2020 and follow Disney+’s customary release pattern with one new episode per week for the six-week run. The title, along with its MCU series brethren WandaVision and Loki, was among the first productions to shut down in response to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic in March.During the December 10, 2020 Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that the series premieres March 19, 2021. And that is now the official release date. The program is still considered a limited series, so do not expect a second season to be forthcoming. Although, you never know what tricks Marvel may pull to turn its limited series plans into ongoing prestige programs. And even if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier remains a one-off event, Marvel has plans for many more series in the works. When Does The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Take Place?(Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)Click image to see full poster in a new window. As with seemingly all of the announced Disney+ shows, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will occur sometime after Endgame. How much later is still up for debate and that span of time is important for an number of reasons. For one: both Sam and Bucky were snapped away in Avengers: Infinity War and presumed dead for five years. They will have to re-establish themselves as living persons. And while this m
The Snoopy Show: Season 1 (2021) (Apple TV+) Debuted: February 5Why We Couldn t Wait: Right on time for the 70th anniversary of the comic strip, The Snoopy Show brings back the titular beagle, as well as the entire Peanuts gang for three new adventures. The whole gang s here, from Woodstock, to Schroeder and his tiny piano. The show seems to mirror the animation style of the classic Bill Melendez–Lee Mendelson cartoons, which instantly makes this a must-watch.DOTA: Dragon s Blood (Netflix)Debuts: March 25Why We Can t Wait: A show based on an insanely popular video game franchise, DOTA is already an exciting prospect, especially when focusing on the high fantasy aspect of the game. Add in the animation studio behind The Legend of Korra and you have show you can t miss. The series will follow the story of popular character Davion, a Dragon Knight who gets involved in a story larger than himself that includes princesses and dragons. Netflix has had a good track record with fantasy animation, thanks to the success of both Blood of Zeus and Castlevania, so it should be an exciting time for fans of both high fantasy and video games to check out this animated adaptation.Yasuke (Netflix)Debuts: April 29Why We Can t Wait: Based on the fascinating story of Yasuke, a real man who became the first Black samurai and fought alongside a feudal lord in 16th century Japan. The show comes from LeSean Thomas and stars Lakeith Stanfield as the titular Yasuke. The logline for the six-episode series reads: In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords. The promise of a Japan of magic and mechs means this will be more than just a period drama. The studio behind the last season of Attack on Titan is in charge of this show, which has one of the coolest concepts we ve heard for this year, and a kickass lead voice actor. If you re a fan of either Samurai Champloo or Afro Samurai, this should be right up your alley.Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Disney+)Debuts: May 4Why We Can t Wait: Introduced in the excellent last season of The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch is a unique squad of clones that look straight out of an ’80s action movie, the most badass soldiers this side of Coruscant. But they face a bit of a problem — the war is over, clones are being decommissioned, and the Jedi are gone. The action looks stunning, the transition-to-the-Empire setting is fascinating and full of potential, and the trailer is already promising lots of connections to The Mandalorian and the future of Star Wars. While we wait for more Baby Yoda, you might want to keep an eye out for The Bad Batch.Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. (Hulu)Debuts: May 23Why We Can t Wait: Co-created by Patton Oswalt, this animated show will center around the hilarious day-to-day life of Marvel supervillain M.O.D.O.K. The show seems like Marvel s answer to Robot Chicken, with stop-motion animation being used to tell very R-rated jokes about the Marvel universe. The first tease showcased a handheld camera style that brings to mind The Office, and it s been teased that the show will be able to pull characters from the X-Men comics, making this an intriguing new experience for Marvel fans.Monsters At Work (Disney+)(Photo by Disney+)Debuts: July 2Why We Can t Wait: We ve seen what happened before the events of Monsters, Inc., but what about what happens after? What happens when a society of monsters built on the idea of scaring kids changes to instead entertain kids and make them laugh? And how does Mike Wazowski get famous enough to have fans of his own? Monsters At Work aims to answer these questions with the story of a new worker (Tylor Tuskmon, voiced by Ben Feldman) at the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team who dreams of becoming a jokester like Mike and Sulley. Many of the original voice actors are back, but what we really want to know is, where is Boo?Rugrats (Nickelodeon)Why We Can t Wait: The original Rugrats helped make Nickelodeon a powerhouse in children s animation back in the ’90s, thanks to its hilarious characters, progressive views on gender roles, and sharp commentary on adult life viewed from the eyes of toddlers. A reboot has been in the works since 2018, with a new promo featuring the new character designs releasing last year. The logline for the revival reads: One of Nickelodeon’s all-time biggest hits returns with new adventures following Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie and Angelica as they explore the world and beyond from their pint-sized and wildly imaginative point-of-view. Marvel s What If? (Disney+)Why We Can t Wait: What if Peggy Carter had been infused with the super-serum instead of Steve Rogers? What if T challa had become Star-Lord? What if the Winter Soldier had to fight a bunch of zombified Avengers? After more than 20 films, we sort of know how the Marvel universe works, which means it s time to shake things up! Marvel s What If? promises to give fans wildly different stories with the characters we know and love, bringing back many castmembers and using animation to tell stories that would be difficult to tell in live-action. While we wait for Phase 4 to hit theaters, this show should get our collective imagination fired up.Godzilla: Singular Point (Netflix)Why We Can t Wait: It seems Netflix is going all-out on a new anime MonsterVerse, with a recently announced Skull Island anime joining the upcoming Godzilla: Singular Point. This show boasts an impressive team behind it, with the studios behind the visually stunning Beastars and the global sensation My Hero Academia joining forces for a hand-drawn/CG animated hybrid following a group of scientists facing down tons of monsters. If that wasn t enough, the trailer teased the return of classic kaiju monsters like Rodan and Gabara, and also the giant mech and savior of humanity, Jet Jaguar from the 1973 film Godzilla vs. Megalon. The Way of the Househusband (Netflix)Why We Can t Wait: Stop us if you ve heard this one before: A deadly yakuza who is used to torture and kill without remorse, a man so renowned they call him The Immortal Dragon, decides to walk away from his life of crime and become the best househusband around. That s the premise behind Netflix s upcoming anime comedy The Way of the Househusband, a show about a former yakuza boss whose entire life is devoted to supporting his wife and taking care of domestic tasks, while frequently running into former rivals and associates.Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (HBO Max and Cartoon Network)(Photo by Cartoon Network/HBO Max)Why We Can t Wait: Genndy Tartakovsky is one of the most exciting voices working in animation today. Whether it s with Dexter s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, or Sym-Bionic Titan, he s always pushing the boundaries of what TV animation can do. After going full R-rating with his prehistoric epic, Primal, Tartakovsky is returning to kids action animation with Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. The show follows a team of ancient teenage heroes who need to protect the world from supernatural forces. Tartakovsky is a master when it comes to action animation, and he knows when to blur the line between kid-friendly content and darker, more adult content. A show about monsters, dark magic, and ancient warriors seems like a perfect fit for Tartakovsky.Maya and the Three (Netflix)(Photo by Netflix)Why We Can t Wait: High fantasy and mythology-heavy adventures are always at least interesting, and there is a criminally low number of Mesoamerican-inspired shows out there, instantly making Maya and the Three a show worth keeping an eye out. Created by The Book of Life s Jorge R. Gutierrez, the show is the epic tale of a warrior princess embarking on a quest to recruit legendary warriors and save the world of both men and gods. Mesoamerican mythology is full of potential for epic storytelling, so to see a show take advantage of it and involve warrior princesses and gods certainly peaks our interest. The Cuphead Show (Netflix)(Photo by Netflix)Why We Can t Wait: Do you like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Do you enjoy old-timey animation and tons of references to Max Fleischer cartoons? Well, we do, so we cannot wait to watch The Cuphead Show. Based on the highly successful and critically acclaimed video game Cuphead, this animated show follows the misadventures of two brothers across a surreal and cartoonish world full of dangers and villains. In terms of pure aesthetics, this is promising to be one of the most unique TV shows of 2021, and if it s anything like the video game, the story is going to get wild.Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (Netflix)(Photo by Netflix)Why We Can t Wait: The Resident Evil franchise is absolutely massive, and it s kind of insane we hadn t got a TV show until now (but now we re getting 2 of them, and one is animated! The show is taking place after the events of the fourth game and it brings back fan favorites Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy for a new fight against zombies. Plot details are very scarce, but if you ve played a Resident Evil game before, you have some idea of how this will go, there will be tons of scares, thrilling action, and probably a rocket launcher used to kill the final boss — just how we like it.Blade Runner: Black Lotus (Crunchyroll and Adult Swim)(Photo by Adult Swim)Why We Can t Wait: Produced by anime legend and Cowboy Bebop creator, Shinichiro Watanabe, Blade Runner: Black Lotus is a brand new anime set in the Blade Runner cyberpunk universe, set to feature some prominent characters from the franchise. Even if we don t know much about the plot of the show, this is an exciting concept. After all, Blade Runner inspired tons of classic works of anime, from Akira, to Ghost in the Shell, and even Cowboy Bebop, so to bring the franchise to the medium it influenced the most seems like a no-brainer. The colorful visuals as well as the epic and complex sci-fi concepts of the original film seem perfectly built for the animation medium, which is limited only by your imagination.Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai (HBO Max)(Photo by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Why We Can t Wait: First of all, this animated prequel to Gremlins is written by Tze Chun, who worked on the last couple of seasons of Gotham, another prequel to a popular franchise, and that show was absolutely bonkers. Though we haven t seen much for Secrets of the Mogwai, we do know that the show will be set in 1920s Shanghai and tell the story of how the old man from Gremlins met a young mogwai called Gizmo. There will be a chase for a legendary treasure, and the promise of colorful monsters according to HBO Max, and even an army of evil gremlins, meaning this show has all the ingredients of filling the void left by the Godzilla cartoon from the 90s, making us incredibly excited to see how this turns out. The series, already renewed for a second season, features a star-studded voice cast including Izaac Wang, Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, James Hong, A.J. LoCascio, Gabrielle Green, and Matthew Rhys.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
(Photo by Nicole Wilder/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)Thursday afternoon s portion of the winter Television Critics Association press tour was largely devoted to channels that are part of the AMC Networks, including AMC and BBC America. This brought news of favorite returning series like Killing Eve and Better Call Saul and anticipated new ones like The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Other TV news comes courtesy of HBO s Watchmen, Netflix s Mindhunter, and Peacock, the new streaming service from NBCUniversal.TOP STORYBETTER SAY GOODBYE TO SAULBetter Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould told journalists during the show s TCA panel that his and Vince Gilligan s Breaking Bad prequel has been renewed for a 13-episode season 6, which will also be the show s last. But before we get to that, AMC still has to air its 10-episode season 5 of Saul, which has a two-night premiere on February 23 and 24 and stars Bob Odenkirk as the increasingly corrupt lawyer. Gould told journalists that he would say this season is more kinetic — to which co-star Jonathan Banks piped up to say violent is the word you re looking for. And while Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will not be in the fifth season of Saul, Gould did confirm that Dean Norris and Steven Michael Quezada will be in episodes three and four this season, reprising their Breaking Bad characters of DEA agents Hank Schrader and Steven Gomez. So will Cranston and Paul ever appear on the show? After all, Paul s Jesse Pinkman did introduce Cranston s Walter White to criminal attorney Saul Goodman.Gould gave the traditional cagey answer that he would love to work with Cranston and Paul again.TIME TO FEAST ON MORE THE WALKING DEAD(Photo by AMC)The brains at AMC have confirmed that the latest series in The Walking Dead franchise, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, will premiere April 12 after the season 10 finale of the original TWD. Simpson murder case from start to verdict. Rotten Returns: Underwater Struggles For Air, Becomes Second Horror Flop of 2020(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. )Underwater finished production in 2017 and is just now making its appearance in theaters. Amongst all the new wide launches this weekend, it finished last with a paltry million. The production, with a budget reported to be anywhere between million and million, is the latest in a string of disappointments for Fox, including the 0 million Certified Fresh animated feature Spies in Disguise (which just crossed 5 million worldwide), Ad Astra, and even Ford v Ferrari, which even with over 1 million globally is still chasing its own large budget. The studio has only had one film (the faith-based Breakthrough) enter profit status in its theatrical run since 2018’s mega-hit Bohemian Rhapsody.Underwater, which was reasonably well reviewed – it s at 53% on the Tomatometer – marks a second misfire for a Kristen Stewart vehicle after November’s Charlie’s Angels, and is the second week in a row during which horror audiences mostly ignored one of its own. Sony’s The Grudge dropped straight out of the top 10 in its second week, falling 69% to .5 million for a total of just .9 million. That puts its word-of-mouth multiple in line with other attempted reboots like Conan the Barbarian, Blair Witch, Rings, last year’s Hellboy and, again, Charlie’s Angels, though its budget loss is not nearly as large as the one Underwater is looking at.The Top 10 and Beyond: Rise of Skywalker Near Billion, Just Mercy Doing Just OK For NowHere we are on Day 24 of The Rise of Skywalker and with 8.16 million it is now the ninth-highest–grossing film ever in that period domestically, just ahead of Rogue One’s 7.36 million. However, that order may change quickly as Rogue had a .06 million fourth weekend on the first January weekend of 2017; ROS comes in with just million, which is also less than the .11 million of The Dark Knight and the .20 million of 2019’s The Lion King in the same frame. That suggests a final gross coming in around the 0 million range, possibly a full 0 million less than The Last Jedi made. While the numbers may pale compared to its recent Star Wars predecessors (sans Solo, of course), this week Rise is going to become just the 15th film ever to gross a half-billion domestically and the 46th film to gross over billion worldwide. The film that has just beaten The Last Jedi on the all-time global box office chart is Disney’s Frozen II. It has now earned .371 billion, passing Episode VIII as well as the final Harry Potter film and Black Panther to become the 11th-highest–grossing film of all time. It needs just .5 million to enter the top 10. Also still chugging along is Jumanji: The Next Level, with another million this weekend bringing its 31-day total to 7 million, the 10th-best for a December release in that timeframe. It has grossed 2 million worldwide. Doing well for Sony too is Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, also on the eve of what should be several Oscar nominations. The film may be neck-and-neck with the 2014 version of the musical Annie after 19 days (.7 million), but that film had a big drop-off after the holidays and stalled with just .9 million. Little Women will get an Oscar bump this week that should propel it to 0-plus million. The two other newbies ran neck-and-neck over the weekend. The expansion of Destin Daniel Cretton’s Just Mercy netted an OK million in 2,375 theaters, which is more than Uncut Gems made in its third-week expansion (.57 million in 2,348 theaters). Uncut Gems may have dropped out of the top 10 already, but it is only about million away from becoming A24’s top domestic grosser ever, replacing Lady Bird’s .95 million. Mercy was also beaten by the Tiffany Haddish/Rose Byrne comedy, Like a Boss, which also opened to an estimated million, a not-so-great start for the million production from Paramount. The film has a current Tomatometer score of 22%. Ending on a positive note, we turn to the ongoing strength of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which is over 5 million worldwide and is going to pass Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood domestically this week to become the second-highest–grossing original film of 2019 behind Jordan Peele s Us.This Time Last Year: The Upside Lands First Big Surprise of 2019One of the big surprises of 2019 opened at number 1 on this weekend. The Upside, which STX Films acquired from the Weinstein Company, started with .35 million on its journey to over 8 million. A Dog’s Way Home finished third with .25 million, and one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, the delayed Keanu Reeves sci-fi cloning thriller, Replicas, opened in 13th with just .37 million. Rounding out the top five were Aquaman in second with .35 million, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in fourth with .05 million, and Escape Room in fifth with .92 million. Mary Poppins Returns crossed 0 million in sixth place. The top 10 films grossed .77 million and averaged 69.4% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 6.8 million and averaged 71.5% with critics. On the Vine: Bad Boys and Dolittle Set For a ShowdownTwo big event films are looking to take the box office back from the leftovers of 2019. The smart money is on Bad Boys for Life, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reuniting for the first time since 2003, only without Michael Bay at the helm. Then, Universal is hoping to avoid another disastrous special effects-laden animal movie in less than a month; if Dolittle can open to more than what Cats has grossed to date (.35 million) that will at least be something. But it will have a lot more to recoup given its inflated 5 million budget and we could be looking at the first big disappointment of 2020.The Full Top 10: January 10-121917 (2019) 89% – .5 million (.22 million total)Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) 52% – .06 million (8.17 million total)Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) 71% – million (7.12 million total)Like a Boss (2020) 21% – million ( million total)Just Mercy (2019) 85% – million (.44 million total)Little Women (2019) 95% – .66 million (.03 million total)Underwater (2020) 47% – million ( million total)Frozen II (2019) 78% – .76 million (9.49 million total)Knives Out (2019) 97% – .73 million (9.62 million total)Spies in Disguise (2019) 77% – .11 million (.62 million total)
