So far, 2020 has been unpredictable, as movie studios and the film industry at large scramble to respond to an ever-changing global crisis. In early March, it was announced that the release date of the latest James Bond film (and Daniel Craig s final outing in the role), No Time to Die, was being postponed from April to November, and it was only a matter of time before others followed suit. Sure enough, a whole slew of films have now announced release date changes, and not all of them have pinned down exactly when they plan to open. Most recently, Walt Disney Studios pulled two of its 20th Century Studios releases from their December dates: Kenneth Branagh s Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile and the video game meta-comedy Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds.Read on for the full list of films that have postponed their opening weekends in 2020, and be sure to check back for updates as they are announced. [Updated on 11/5/20.]Delays A Quiet Place Part II (2021)   Moved from September 4, 2020 to April 23, 2021 The Climb (2019)   Moved from March 20; new date unknown Radium Girls (2018)   Moved from April 3; new date unknown No Time to Die (2021) Moved from November, 2020 to April 2, 2021 Saint Maud (2019)   Moved from April 10; new date unknown Promising Young Woman (2020)   Moved from April 17 to December 25 Antlers (2021)   Moved from April 17, 2020 to February 19, 2021 Black Widow (2021)   Moved from May 1, 2020 to November 6, 2020 to May 7, 2021 Run (2020)   Pulled from May 8 theatrical release; premiering on Hulu on November 20 Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)   Moved from May 15, 2020 to May 21, 2021 The Woman in the Window (2021)   Moved from May 15; new date unknown The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020)   Pulled from May 22 theatrical release; premiering on VOD in 2021 (date unknown) F9 The Fast Saga (2021)   Moved from May 22, 2020 to April 2, 2021 Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)   Moved from June 5 to October 2 to December 25; opening in theaters and streaming on HBO Max Candyman (2021)   Moved from October 16, 2020 to August 27, 2021 Soul (2020)   Pulled from November 20 theatrical release; premiering on Disney+ on December 25, 2020 Top Gun: Maverick (2022)   Moved from December 23, 2020 to July 2, 2021 In the Heights (2021)   Moved from June 26, 2020 to June 18, 2021 Free Guy (2021)   Moved from December 11; new date unknown Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)   Moved from July 3, 2020 to July 2, 2021 Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)   Moved from July 10, 2020 to March 5, 2021 to June 11, 2021 Jungle Cruise (2021)   Moved from July 24, 2020 to July 30, 2021 Morbius (2022)   Moved from July 31, 2020 to March 19, 2021 Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (2021)   Moved from August 7, 2020 to January 15, 2021 The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)   Moved from August 28,2020 to August 20, 2021 Monster Hunter (2020)   Moved from September 4, 2020 to April 23, 2021 ()   Moved from September 4, 2020 to August 27, 2021 The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)   Moved from September 11, 2020 to June 4, 2021 The King's Man (2021)   Moved from September 18, 2020 to February 26, 2021 to February 12, 2021 Last Night in Soho (2021)   Moved from September 25, 2020 to April 23, 2021 The Many Saints of Newark (2021)   Moved from September 25, 2020 to March 12, 2021 Finch (2021)   Moved from October 2, 2020 to April 16, 2021 Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)   Moved from October 2, 2020 to June 25, 2021 Roald Dahl's The Witches (2020)    Moved from October 9 to October 22 release on HBO Max in US, October 28 release in theaters worldwide Death on the Nile (2022)    Moved from December 18; new date unknown The French Dispatch (2021)    Moved from October 16; new date unknown Halloween Kills (2021)   Moved from October 16, 2020 to October 15, 2021 Snake Eyes: G.I. 3. 激战团竞模式
The fifth season of Power ended on quite a cliffhanger to roll into the final season of the show. We won’t spoil how it resolves in the season premiere, but fans are going to find out whether a certain character pulled through or not. Whatever happens to her will drive Ghost (Omari Hardwick) through the final season of the Starz drama. It’s been a five-year journey for Hardwick as Ghost, a New Yorker running a nightclub above board, but making his real money selling drugs. While the final chapter of Ghost s saga will air in two parts — part one premieres Sunday, Aug. 25, and part two will debut in January 2020 — Hardwick s future is already looking bright. He spent his summer filming Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead with Dave Bautista, and will have no trouble staying busy if his movie output between seasons of Power is any indication.Hardwick spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about the final season of Power and also shared what he likes to watch when he can steal an hour after his kids go to sleep.WHAT IS APPOINTMENT TV FOR YOU?(Photo by Cinemax)Outside of the latest and greatest cartoons, because I’m the pop of a 6- and a 4-year-old — if I’m not watching stuff with them, the first two seasons of Power I watched The Knick. It was appointment TV for me. I haven’t had appointment TV since then because I’ve been playing Ghost. Not only time-wise — it’s tricky. Then I started doing music, so my time was all about just being with the kids. The first two seasons I was watching Soderbergh’s The Knick. My friend Andre Holland [was] on it, obviously and Clive Owen. That was the last time. I like The Voice. That was appointment TV for me. I like Chip and Jojo, HGTV s Fixer Upper was really big for me. I find myself watching a lot of that kind of stuff.WHAT’S ON YOUR DVR?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)What I haven’t been able to see yet that is set on the DVR in terms of the pre-order, because I didn’t make it into the theater to watch it, is Avengers: Endgame. I never got a chance to see that yet. I’m working with Dave Bautista now and I told him, “I haven’t seen that yet.” He’s like, “It’s there. It ain’t gonna go nowhere.” [The kids and I] watched Jumanji yesterday, which is different than the one you and I grew up with.I did like True Detective. I thought Mahershala was really solid on that and we actually share an agent. I loved his work on that.WHAT’S IN YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by Sony Pictures)I watched Into the Spider-Verse, the animated Spider-Man, which was phenomenal. I’ve had to watch that several times. I’m in a movie right now in New Mexico called Army of the Dead which is Netflix, so I snuck back [home]. My son was under the weather yesterday and I just wanted to hug him. It’s an hour flight. I live in Denver, so I went from New Mexico to Denver, snuck back, and in that little four hours of being home, that’s what I was watching. Oh, you know what I watched? Stranger Things. Really good. I have seen that. It’s really, really different. I liked Stranger Things a lot.WHAT’S COMING SOON THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR?(Photo by HBO)You can tell me whether it’s coming back out. The Night Of, my friend Michael K. Williams was in it. That joint was incredible. I love that. Between The Knick and season 1 and 2 of Power and being able to fit that in, wifey was pregnant with our second kid. After that baby came out, I really got into that. That was dope. I love following the story of it, especially with Ghost being this character that’s such a thinker, and me being a thinker, that was very good. You can tell me — are they doing a second installment? [Editor s note: Sadly, not right now, although HBO has expressed interest should the creative team want to make more.](Photo by Starz)Fred Topel for Rotten Tomatoes: Last season ended on such a cliffhanger. We’re not going to give away what happens in the season premiere, but did you have any input with creator Courtney A. Kemp in how that storyline in particular would resolve?Absolutely. It’s cool that I haven’t necessarily had to want for it. There’s never been a summer that she and I aren’t on the phone about what comes. Playing the lead character, there’s always had to be major, major communication between the two of us as to what’s going on between each episode, let alone coming from the finale of one season to the beginning of the next. We’ve always conversed about it and she’s asked me my opinion. I fly out to L.A. Typically we sit in the writers room. We break down where the next season’s going to go. They ask you your opinions. She’s offered that from the gate so I’ve always had a say in that way.RT: You must have thought a lot about where Ghost is going to end up. Is it quite a different thing to finally be there?I remember running in Boston. Just took the family, drove them up four or five hours to Boston from New York. I remember jogging and listening to a song and the song inspired what I thought would be a great idea for the end of this if we ever got to that point and if we became as successful as we did. At that point, we’re season 2 but if we became as successful as we did, which we now humbly find ourselves, I had written an ending that is not what you guys will see. Getting to the place where whatever the conclusion of my storyline is on the show, if it’s not exactly what I conjured up in my spirit when I was listening to a song running in Boston, then that’s a different experience.RT: What was the song?“Wanted Man. In the song, the guy’s on the run and it’s super dope.(Photo by Starz)RT: Can Ghost save his family, or is it already too late for that?If he could all of a sudden have the family at the same place [it would be unrealistic] because when he rose to the top, he was doing it illegally. At some point as we see Tariq now proving to be that point. Tariq is saying, “But how’d you get there? Mom, don’t speak yet. Pop, how’d you get there? Okay, Mom, you talk. Oh, you’re lying too?” There was so much inequity in the dissemination of information, whether it be false or right, and you’re a parent. You can’t lie to your kids at the levels he did and then have a mistress on the side so that in your fall, you’re able to still salvage everything. My point is, I guess, is when he rose, he was building it on shaky ground. He was going to have a foundation of lies, so I don’t necessarily think we could have it where he salvages them that way. But if he can keep them alive, I think at this point that’s all Ghost is [trying to do].RT: Do you have a badass role in Army of the Dead?My grandma passed in the midst of that, which was tough. Dad’s ma. So it was really, really tough but she did really well —especially having my grandfather pass in November, having a husband that died in November — she lasted nine months after that. So I was wardrobing when she passed and then came home, back to New York. Then I went to the Essence Festival to promote Power. So after we laid her to rest, I might have had two days at the Denver house before Army of the Dead called me right back. The role is a super badass role. Not just a badass, but Dave Bautista and I play the guys that fought with each other at one point and now are being asked to fight with each other again to figure these zombies out. Zack Snyder’s been just a pleasure to work with and his whole camp has been awesome.Power returns for the first half of its final season Sunday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. on Starz.

(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)There is a big difference between scary kids movies, and kids movies that just happen to scare kids. We wrote about the latter just last month, as we explored animated movies that weren t necessarily intended to be horror pieces, but still managed to traumatize young viewers. But the former, the kids movies that are actually meant to be scary, are quite a special thing. The 80s and early 90s gave us plenty of darker movies for kids that managed to be creepy enough to scare the young audience – and frankly, many of the adults who were sitting with them – but still provided enough wonder and entertainment for those kids to return to the films again and again. Just to be terrorized once more.Among these darker films, there is one that stands above the rest: the Nicolas Roeg adaptation of Roald Dahl s The Witches. The story of an orphan and his grandmother who happen upon a convention of witches at a seaside hotel – and the beginnings of a scheme to rid the world of children – landed in U.S. theaters in August of 1990, and was immediately heralded as a groundbreaking entry in the canon of dark kids movies. With grotesque makeup courtesy of Jim Henson s team, a chillingly memorable Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, and Dahl s ceaselessly dark story, it would become a VHS favorite for more adventurous children. (A remake, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway, is due in theaters in 2021.)To mark the 30th anniversary of the terrifying, hilarious, and unforgettable original, we re going to avoid eating the soup and explore why this is the scariest kids film ever made. Period.Forget Scream: This is the Opening 10 Minutes That Still Keeps Us Up At Night Plenty of horror movies, both for kids and adults, take their sweet time getting to the good stuff. Thankfully, The Witches wastes nary a minute, opening with evil witches, a terrifying short story, and establishing its lore as grandma Helga (Mai Zetterling) explains to Luke (Jasen Fisher) her hatred for the story s vicious child-killing witches and how to spot them. Right out of the gate, the film taps directly into the Stranger Danger panic of the 80s, as Helga says,  You can never be sure if it s a witch you are looking at or a kind lady. Then shit gets really creepy. As Helga explains how to spot a witch – no toes, purple tinge to their eyes – she tells the story of how her childhood friend Erica became a victim to the witch that lived next door. The way the film frames Erica s disappearing in a laneway, kidnapped by the friendly neighbor, is enough to send chills down both kids and adults spines. But then Helga reveals that a few weeks after the kidnapping, she noticed a strange little girl in the painting Erica s dad bought the day she went missing. Turns out, Erica is trapped within the painting, cursed to live her life in a 2-D space, growing old until one day she disappears. (Find us a 90s kid who doesn t remember the haunting image of Erica in that) painting. In just 10 minutes, the movie mixes the fantastical concept of witches with the real fear of child abduction, and shatters our view of a group that we re traditionally taught to see as safe — the nice old lady across the street who gives you candy and pinches your cheek. Then, to cap things off, Luke s parents die.The Director Is A Horror Genius And Doesn t Hold Back Despite his reputation as a children s author, Dahl writes plenty of disturbing imagery into his work. While many directors adapting his stories play down that aspect of the material — think Matilda, The BFG — the director of one of the best and most adult horror films ever made, Don t Look Now, was determined to bring the cruelty and ugliness that The Witches required.Having Nicolas Roeg direct a kids movie certainly was an odd choice, on the surface, given the director s reputation for thrillers with plenty of sex appeal. And yet, Roeg manages to perfectly translate the unpleasantness of the titular witches to the big screen, and create a sense of unease throughout. Watch as he uses extreme close-ups and Dutch angles to give the entire film an unsettling vibe. This is particularly effective when Huston s Grand High Witch pushes a baby carriage towards a cliff s edge and a chase to save it unfolds; the scene is already shocking by its nature, but Roeg treats it with the same seriousness as he did his nightmarish, lost-in-Venice scenes in Don t Look Now, turning it into an unspeakable act of unfathomable sadism.Roeg has admitted that he accidentally let his son watch the dailies, which helped him realize what scenes were too terrifying for the final film.Roald Dahl Knew How to Exploit Kids  Worst FearsOf course, the film wouldn t have been possible without the bizarreness and horror of Dahl s original story. Though we mostly remember him for his classic works of children s fiction like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda, Dahl was not a stranger to horror. The author even hosted a pre-Twilight Zone sci-fi and horror anthology series called Way Out for CBS, and he always knew how to be scary without crossing a line, but also without ever talking down to his audience. In The Witches, Dahl explores that period in which kids start to realize the world may not be as safe or as bright as their parents made them believe. First, he does it by turning the nice old lady into a vicious monster, allowing Roeg to force us to look with suspicion at every character who enters the frame and sow distrust with every purple glint in a hotel worker s eye. Then, Dahl pulls a reverse Willy Wonka, using the chocolate bar as a poisonous weapon that threatens to turn every kid in England into a mouse. In Dahl s world, as faithfully rendered by Roeg – until the tacked-on happy ending at least – nothing is safe.Jim Henson s Grotesque Witch Makeup Caused Us All Kinds Of Nightmares(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)If there is one defining image of The Witches, it s the unmasking of Huston s Grand High Witch as she delivers her keynote address at the convention. After the stylish woman in that lush purple-lined cape walks onto the stage to the applause of her adoring fellow witches, she removes her wig to reveal a bald head — which we already knew to expect thanks to Helga s warnings. But then she goes a step further, removing her face mask to reveal a gnarly monster that seems part Skeksis, part Freddy Krueger. It s incredible work by Jim Henson s Creature Shop, and a far cry from either Kermit or even most of the creatures they conjured up for Labyrinth. The Grand High Witch is a masterpiece of horror makeup, and Henson s team dive fully into the ugliness and gnarly-ness of the look, which reportedly took several hours to put on and then even more hours to remove. There is more incredible work, too, as children and witches are transformed into mice, but it s Huston s transformation that sticks in the memory. The moment the witch removes her face is the moment the film affirms what it has so far only hinted at: behind the gentle smiles hide heinous monsters ready to devour you.Anjelica Huston Delivers One of the Great Horror Movie PerformancesIt s one thing to have a villain who looks the part, but The Witches only remains as memorable as it does because its villain also acts the part. Even before her nightmare-inducing transformation, Huston is an enthralling menace, vamping it up – what even is that accent – as she sashays flirtatiously one minute, and stares down and terrorizes the next. The Oscar-winner sells a completely different attitude than any other witch in the film. Instead of warm, gentle, and easy to approach, Huston s Grand High Witch exudes sex appeal, talks with a cold and detached voice that shows she knows she s more powerful than everyone in the room – she s Miranda Priestly, with certain unsavory appetites – and then writhes with pleasure when she s about to demonstrate her child-killing abilities. The film is constantly warning us against strangers, especially those who approach us with faked kindness, but Huston s Grand High Witch doesn t need to fake anything.  She is a repugnant and vile monster, and yet we – and seemingly every man who encounters her in the film – are drawn to her, almost admiring her for daring to be herself: a true witch, mask on or off.The Witches was released in U.S. theaters on August 24, 1990. It is available to stream on Netflix, and to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon Prime, and iTunes.

NOTE: The free episode is available until 11:59pm Thursday May 23. Check out the full first episode of DC Universe s misfit superhero series Doom Patrol. It will be available on Rotten Tomatoes for a full week ahead of Doom Patrol s season finale.About the Series: Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of DC s most beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. 亚博网址官方网站 The bond between Marvel and Hulu is growing thanks to a recently announced plan to develop four animated series and, with a certain amount of tongue planted in cheek, unite the main characters of each in an animated special called The Offenders. But the move also indicates the increasing importance of animated projects based on comic books. Of course, both Marvel and Warner Bros. have been making programs aimed at younger viewers for decades, but the new crop of announced projects indicates a great focus on a broader age range. Considering the high quality of animated superhero shows for children (a la Batman: The Animated Series) or a slightly older demographic (Young Justice: Outsiders), these new shows will definitely have to bring something new to the medium to find critical and commercial success. So what is on the horizon and can we predict a project s success from what we know of its development so far? Let’s take a look.Marvel’s Howard the Duck(Photo by Marvel)Based on: The comic book character created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik, featured in his own self-titled comic book from 1976-1979, and short-run series in 1986, 2001, 2007, and longer run from 2015-2017. He also makes appearances across the Marvel Universe.Premise: Transported to Earth against his will, Howard does his best to make do under the circumstances. He generally finds work and sometimes even gets paid for his troubles. He also battles absurd villains, like the obsessive Dr. Bong, while also trying the best way to get rich quick and escape the quarrelsome tendencies of the Marvel Universe.Status: Announced as part of the Offenders quartet of Hulu projects in February, Clerks director Kevin Smith and Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-creator Dave Willis are developing the project for Marvel Entertainment. The pair seem suitably chosen for Howard s anarchic take on comic book tropes.Chances for Success: If it can get out from under the shadow of the infamous Howard the Duck feature film, the irreverent humor baked into the premise should keep this around for a few seasons. But as with almost all of Howard’s solo outings, it will probably end prematurely.Marvel’s Tigra Dazzler Show(Photo by Marvel)Based on: The stalwart Avenger Tigra, created by Roy Thomas and Wally Wood — later refined by Tony Isabella and Don Perlin — and the mutant pop star created by Tom DeFalco, John Romita Jr., Louise Simonson, and Roger Stern. Both have had storied careers in and out of the core Avengers and X-Men titles, joining various super-teams, going solo, and changing their looks to match the times. Fun fact: Dazzler began her career as a disco singer in a cross-promotion with Casablanca Records. Both the label and Marvel hoped to launch her as a multimedia entity in film, music, and comics. An animated series 40 years later may not have been what Casablanca wanted, but we ll take it.Premise: The politically minded duo make their way to Los Angeles, a world apart from Marvel’s favored Manhattan, where they try to get their superpowered heads, hands, and hearts around their lives.Status: Chelsea Handler and The Last Man on Earth veteran Erica Rivinoja are developing the series for Marvel.Chances for Success: The unusual pairing of Tigra and Dazzler makes this the outlier of the new Marvel animated projects, as does Handler’s brand of humor. That said, it could always prove to be the standout thanks to those very elements.Marvel’s Hit-Monkey(Photo by Marvel)Based on: The simian assassin created by Daniel Way and Dalibor Talajić, who appeared in a 2010 Hit-Monkey one-shot release, a Deadpool storyline, and a three-issue, self-titled miniseries.Premise: An angry Japanese macaque makes for Tokyo to avenge the deaths of his clan. Luckily, he has the skills and aid of a ghost who was once an American assassin. And if the two have anything to say about, all of the city’s criminal underworld is going to pay.Status: Blades of Glory directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck are currently developing the series as part of Marvel and Hulu’s Offenders initiative.Chances for Success: While Blades of Glory has a Tomatometer score of 70%, the duo s subsequent films have not been as fresh. The Jennifer Aniston/Jason Bateman comedy The Switch struck out at 51%, while their most recent film, Office Christmas Party, stumbled with a 41%. Of course, the absolute wackiness of the premise may give them a renewed energy.Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.(Photo by Marvel)Based on: One of the greatest gifts Jack Kirby and Stan Lee ever gave to comics. Making his full debut in 1967’s Tales of Suspense #94, the Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing and his successors in name and appearance became one of the Marvel Universe’s most constant, bewildering, and wonderful foes.Premise: The egomaniacal supervillain with a really big head and a really little body struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family. He also faces an inferiority complex of sorts as villains like Doctor Doom look down on him.Status: Hulu and Marvel secured the services of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum to develop the series, with Oswalt set to voice the lovable, if misunderstood, M.O.D.O.K.Chances for Success: We might be a biased, but we’re sure viewers will love M.O.D.O.K. once they meet him.Harley Quinn(Photo by DC Universe)Based on: Batman: The Animated Series’ breakout character Harley Quinn. Created by series producer Bruce Timm and writer Paul Dini as a one-time gun moll for the Joker, she took on a life of her own, eventually debuting in the DC Comics universe in 1999. She’s since become a big deal thanks to her own monthly comic, her appearance in the Suicide Squad feature film, and her own upcoming spinoff film, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).Premise: Harley has finally kicked the Joker to the curb. Her next target: a spot within the Legion of Doom. And she ll push her way past any and all of the DC Comics ne er-do-wells to do it. With some help from Poison Ivy, of course.Status: First announced in late 2017 as one of the key projects on the then-unnamed DC Universe streaming service, the series will debut this October with Kaley Cuoco voicing Harley, Lake Bell voicing Ivy, and Alan Tudyk voicing Joker. Other cast members include Diedrich Bader (once again playing Batman), Ron Funches, Wanda Sykes, Natalie Morales, Jim Sykes, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander, and Christopher Meloni as Commissioner Gordon. Powerless s Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey developed the series and serve as executive producers.Chances for Success: The service s first animated offering, Young Justice: Outsiders, has a 93% on the Tomatometer. If Harley Quinn is of similar quality, it will no doubt return to the service for a second season. Then again, Powerless folded after one 61% season on NBC. But with the metrics between network and streaming being wildly different, Harley could prove victorious in the end.Invincible(Photo by Image Comics)Based On: The Image comic book series by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, which ran for 144 issues and a number of special releases from 2003 to 2018.Premise: Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) is your typical 17-year-old boy. Well, as typical as he can be when his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Thanks to his father’s alien physiology, Mark is super-strong and possesses the ability to fly. But as Mark develops these and other powers, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.Status: Amazon revealed a rich and varied voice cast for the series in January 2019, which includes Yeun, Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin, and Max Burkholder. In a break from traditional half-hour format for animation of all stripes, Invincible will feature hour-long episodes. The first eight-episode season is expected to debut in 2020.Chances for Success: The comic book series ran for a long time, indicating the story has an engrossing appeal — not unlike The Walking Dead. But the hourlong format is untested and it remains to be seen if viewers will take to the longer runtime. Of course, viewers may hardly notice if they binge-watch it as they do Amazon’s The Tick and other original programs. What If ?(Photo by Marvel)Based On: Marvel Comic s What If ?, an anthology series that ran from 1977 to 1984 and again from 1989 to 1998 — with a handful of shorter runs in the years since — and told stories based around different outcomes of various classic Marvel tales. Issues centered on questions like What if Spider-Man joined The Fantastic Four? and What if Daredevil became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Premise: Taking inspiration from the comic book, each episode will explore a pivotal moment in Marvel Cinematic Universe history and turn it on its head. The first episode, for example, will ask What if Peggy Carter took the super soldier serum? Status: The project was announced in April of 2019 as another partnership between Marvel Studios and the Disney+ streaming service. Because of the studio s involvement, MCU actors including Hayley Atwell (Carter) will reportedly reprise their roles. It is currently unclear when the series will debut, but the service is set to launch in November 2019.Chances for Success: It is a Marvel Studios project on Disney+. The only thing that could hobble it would be Disney+ failing to woo enough subscribers when it launches in November.Magic: The Gathering(Photo by Wizards of the Coast)Based On: The legendary collectible card game that kept many comic book shops afloat in the dark days of the 1990s. Players choose elemental forces to power their armies and face off against friends and strangers. The game continues to thrive more than 25 years later with professional leagues, online games, and various other forms of merchandise.Premise: The Planeswalkers — the game s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains who travel across Magic’s own multiverse — vie for control, not unlike players of the game in the real world.Status: Announced in June 2019, the series will be overseen by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who will develop a never-before-told story of the Planeswalkers. Bardel Entertainment will animate the series for Octopie (the animation studio that is producing it), and it ll debut on Netflix in 2020.Chances for Success: Considering Magic s appeal spans decades, generations, countries, and various types of media, it should work about as well as other Magic initiatives. At the same time, film and television are new realms for the Planeswalkers, and they may find their adventures there as perilous as Dungeons Dragons s attempts at crossing into those same arenas.Jurassic World: Camp CretaceousBased on: The Jurassic World movie series, which is itself based on the Jurassic Park movie series. Both are based on the novel by Michael Crichton in which a Walt Disney-type industrialist recreates dinosaurs to open an amusement park. Jurassic Park represents it going disastrously wrong while Jurassic World shows it as a viable business — at least for a time. Then, disaster strikes (as it always must).Premise: Six teenagers find their once-in-a-lifetime trip to a new adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar (where most Jurassic films occur) is anything but a wonder summer vacation. The dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island — as they often do — forcing the stranded campers to bond and help each other survive the ordeal.Status: As revealed in June, the series will be part of Netflix’s ongoing animation initiative with DreamWorks Animation, the company behind the excellent Voltron and She-Ra revivals. Pinky Malinky’s Scott Kreamer and Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny’s Lane Lueras will serve as showrunners and executive producers while Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, and overall Jurassic producer Frank Marshall will be on board as executive producers. Thor screenwriter Zach Stentz will be a consulting producer. The series is set to debut in 2020.Chances for Success: Netflix’s partnership with DreamWorks yielded Voltron: Legendary Defender (95%), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (95%), and Guillermo del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia series. The animation and storytelling is top notch and surprisingly compelling. If they can bring that standard to the Jurassic World brand, the only real concern will be making the kids’ summer vacation last for 65 episodes.

This Week s special Comic-Con Ketchup brings you a recap of some of the reveals and announcements from this weekend s Comic-Con@Home 2021, including new and returning shows like Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Star Trek: Prodigy, The Walking Dead final season, and The Wheel of Time.FRIDAY 10 A.M. A CLOSER LOOK AT ANIMATED STAR TREKS: PRODIGY AND LOWER DECKSWith both Marvel and DC passing on Comic-Con@Home this year, one immediately obvious question was whether other film studios would step up to fill their vacancy, or if the event would be dominated by television. That question was quickly answered just by looking at Friday morning s TV and streaming–heavy schedule, and the event kept the same momentum the whole way through.Paramount+ got things started Friday morning with its Peak Animation panel focused on four shows, half of which from their Star Trek franchise. Kate Mulgrew will reprise her Captain Janeway character from Star Trek: Voyager in Star Trek: Prodigy, which was one of the four trailers. The comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks, which received its season 1 reveal at last year s event showed off its season 2 trailer this year including the return of Jonathan Frakes as William Riker.Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News was also teased with its satirical special coverage  of this year s Comic-Con@Home itself. The final new show revealed and which had a trailer debut was The Harper House, featuring cast members like Rhea Seahorn (Better Call Saul), Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), star of the 2022 Marvel-Disney+ series She-Hulk.FRIDAY 11 A.M. POSTER AND RELEASE DATE FOR AMAZON S AMBITIOUS WHEEL OF TIME SERIES (Photo by Amazon Prime Video)Click image to open full poster in a new tab. Amazon Prime had a few different projects to show off at their panel (including their series adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer, but the one that probably had the most fan anticipation was probably their adaptation of Robert Jordan s fantasy series The Wheel of Time. 亚博网址官方网站 And what’s with the spiders?Spiders are another recurring animal motif. First, young Adelaide whistles “Itsy Bitsy Spider” in the hall of mirrors, before young Red takes over the tune; later, as she sits beaten and almost dead in the movie s climax, real Adelaide attempts to whistle the tune again. It was the last song she heard before she was kidnapped. Why that song? Again: symbolism. The song is about a small spider who tries to climb out of a water spout but is washed back down; later, when the sun comes out and dries up the rain, the spider climbs back up. Kinda like the Tethered, right? Early on we see a kind of visualization of this, as Adelaide watches a small spider crawling out from beneath a big fake spider. The big, fat spider is fake; the little, vulnerable spider is real. Again: symbolism. And  owls? Update: We threw it out to the audience to tell us why they thought Peele chose to have a mechanical owl pop out in the house of mirrors, and they came through with some theories and ideas as to the symbolism. Danielle suggests it was all about foreboding ( Owls are common symbols in literature for evil ), while Gonzalo Lomeli wrote, Owls are seen as death omens in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and in some Native American tribes. When the owl pops up and scares young Adelaide in the house of mirrors it symbolizes her inevitable fate. When Red (Adelaide s copy) sees the same owl later, she smashes it to pieces foreshadowing that she will make it out alive. Kayson Honda suggests, this might be too on the nose but I was thinking it’s the standard symbol of wisdom, knowledge and truth. Explains why it scared Adelaide as a child but represents her being introduced to the true nature of the Tethered. Would also explain why Adelaide symbolically destroys hit when she follows Red back down. Could be seen as a comical poke at how it scared her as a child, or it represents the truth she’s trying desperately to hide. Whatever the meaning of the owl, it s interesting to note that one version of Adelaide has a very different reaction to it than the other; the real Adelaide jumps while her doppelgänger has no fear of it.How much does Jason know?(Photo by @ Universal)We learn early on that young Jason (Evan Alex) is perceptive and curious (“What does I got five on it mean?”). It’s Jason who seems to work out that the Tethered are controlled by, or control, us, when he plays with his double, Pluto, in the closet; that comes in handy later when he walks Pluto into the fire. At the end of the film, sitting in the passenger seat, he gives his mom a look that suggests he knows something’s not quite right – that she could in fact be one of the Tethered and not the real Adelaide. It’s not 100% clear that he knows this, but there are reasons to believe he has pieced it together. It’s Jason, after all, who witnesses his mother killing one of the Tyler twins and letting out an almost animalistic (and very Tethered-y) sound as she does, and he is in the underground facility when the truth comes out between Adelaide and Red at the movie’s climax. Could he have overheard? What about the Tethered’s Names? And the family’s?Biblical and mythological references abound in Peele’s choice of names. Gabriel and his doppelgänger Abraham both bear firmly biblical names, while Jason’s doppelgänger Pluto is named for the Greek god of the underworld and Zora’s Thethered, Umbrae, is named for shadow or darkness. The Tyler twins’ Tethereds’ names also come layered with meaning (Io was the first high priestess of Hera, Nix a Greek goddess of night) and one inventive Rotten Tomatoes staffer wonders if the choice of Adelaide, which is a city in South Australia, was a hint that the character was actually from the underground world (a.k.a., “down under”). This is not true, but we certainly want it to be.UPDATE: Kitty s doppelgänger is named Dahlia, which in Hebrew means flowering branch and which is also the name of a brightly colored Mexican flower from the daisy family. Interestingly, given the Tylers wealth, in Baltic mythology Dalia is the goddess of fate, and is connected with material wealth and its distribution – again a key theme of the movie. And, if you want to read even deeper, many Americans likely associate Dahlia with the case of the Black Dahlia, a.k.a. Elizabeth Short, who was found murdered in L.A. in the late 1940s. She had been brutally mutilated and bisected. Why is Red the only one who can talk? And why does she talk like that? That Red can talk is the biggest clue that she is in fact the original Adelaide: none of the other Tethered can talk – though they seem to have a language of grunts and shouts that is communicative, as when Abraham shouts to someone from the boat – so she must have been one of us at some point. Why does she have such a strained, croaky voice? There are multiple possible explanations. Her trachea might have been broken as a child when her doppelgänger choked her. Her vocal patterns might have blended with the rough noises made by the Tethered with whom she lived. It might be a result of not having spoken for so many years. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Nyong’o refused to reveal the exact source of the character’s voice, but did explain how she achieved it: She based the voice on a real-life condition called spasmodic dysphonia, sometimes the result of trauma. “Your vocal chords involuntarily spasm, creating this odd airflow. I worked with my ENT and a vocal therapist to be able to do it but keep my voice safe, because it s quite dangerous for a healthy vocal box to do that kind of thing. Then I built off of that. Why Couldn t Kitty s Doppelgänger Kill Adelaide?(Photo by @ Universal)UPDATE: One of the questions we asked in our original post was why couldn t Kitty s doppelgänger kill Adelaide? Why did she have her tied to the bed when she could have just stabbed her? Some might argue that it was pure dramatic tension – having the villain looking in the mirror, creepily playing with her face, allowed Peele to get the kids into the room for Zora to put herself in danger, and then Jason to kill Kitty with that fist-pumping crystal attack. RT user mattman suggests two explanations in the comments: She couldn t kill Adelaide because if it wasn t for her, the tethered never would have escaped. Adelaide was important to all the tethers [sic]. He also posts: My other idea comes from Kitty and Adelaide s conversation earlier in the movie. Kitty is jealous of Adelaide s beauty. Maybe the tether[ed] also feels that way and was about to pull a Face Off with those scissors. It s worth noting that as Kitty s doppelgänger, Dahlia would have had to endure a bastardized – and presumably quite horrific – reflection of the plastic surgery procedures Kitty had undergone; thus she starts to cut her face maybe in an act of rebellion. Also, containing some part of Kitty s soul, she might have just been enjoying a moment of vanity with herself in the mirror. And there are so many more questions. Like:Why didn’t young Adelaide just run out of the facility when her cuffs eventually came off? What’s exactly happening with the ballet stuff? Is Jason potentially one of the Tethered – or different somehow? What s with the rock, paper, scissors players? How does Plato’s Allegory of the Cave play into it? (It does, right?)What’s with Adelaide snapping off-beat? Is that because Tethered Adelaide can’t actually dance/keep rhythm?Think you know the answers? Think we got something wrong? Have more questions of your own? Let us know in the comments.Thumbnail image courtesy @ UniversalLike this?
