(Photo by Syfy; BBC AMERICA; Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection)The past year has offered 12 TV seasons Certified Fresh at 100% — including The Good Place, Cobra Kai, Vida, and Dear White People — of 110 overall that are Certified Fresh. A voracious TV consumer could simply work their way down the list of every Certified Fresh TV show of 2018, or have a look at Rotten Tomatoes staff picks. Our editorial staff has considered the year in television and curated a list of series that may not have met the criteria for Certified Fresh, but nonetheless have captured our imaginations and earned our recommendation anyway. The Expanse 94%What It Is: In the 23rd century, after colonizing the solar system, humans make first contact with an alien race. But rather than meet face-to-whatever, the interaction occurs via the ancient, extinct race s super-advanced A.I. technology, which humanity struggles to understand, communicate with, and ultimately control. Why You Should Watch It: It s been 10 years since Syfy s Battlestar Galactica remake from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) went off the air. The series, which topped our list of the 100 best sci-fi series of all time, won worldwide fans through its gritty space-opera storylines about the human struggle with and against intelligent machines. The BSG world felt lived in, and its characters, both human and machine, presented a seemingly viable space-based future. The Expanse, which Amazon dramatically rescued from cancellation this year, is BSG s very worthy successor in offering a similarly complex sci-fi tale with engaging characters and award-worthy production design. It stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, and Thomas Jane. Why the show hasn t enjoyed the same level of worldwide appeal is one of the series greatest mysteries.Where to Watch: Amazon, Syfy (season 3)Commitment: around 25 hoursPicked By: Debbie Day, TV Features EditorBarry 99%What It Is: In this dry, sometimes unexpectedly somber HBO dark comedy, a professional killer for hire from the Midwest travels to Los Angeles for a hit and stumbles into an acting class, where he not only discovers a community of aspiring actors who welcome him but also begins to imagine a quieter, more normal life. Why You Should Watch It: Thanks to his up-for-anything enthusiasm and easygoing charisma — not to mention his impeccable comedic timing — SNL and Documentary Now alum Bill Hader has earned a sizable fanbase over the years. Those fans were always going to show up for Barry, no matter how good (or bad) it was. Fortunately, the series does a magnificent job balancing Hader s natural boyish charm and his less frequently utilized — but still incredibly effective — proficiency at communicating deep pathos (see: The Skeleton Twins), and he s aided by a stellar ensemble that includes Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Goldberg, and Henry Winkler in one of his finest roles in years.Barry begins with a funny idea, infuses it with real emotional investment, and tosses in a few Oh, sh ! moments just to keep you on your toes. Hader and Winkler have already taken home Emmys for their efforts, and they re both up for Golden Globes next, so now is as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about.Where to Watch: HBOGOCommitment: A little over 4.5 hoursPicked by: Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorBabylon Berlin What It Is: While investigating a pornography ring, Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) discovers a web of conspiracies with huge implications for Germany as a whole. Why You Should Watch It: The idea of the Weimar Republic (the era of German history that spanned from the end of World War I until the rise of the Nazis) has exerted a powerful fascination to this day. It was a time that produced a flowering of artistic expression — from the Bauhaus Movement to The Threepenny Opera, not to mention such cinematic masterworks as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel — and a moment of (relative) tolerance for LGBTQ people. It was also a time of political upheaval, during which a democratic government attempted to hold together a nation struggling with extreme economic insecurity, a time when communists and fascists brawled in the streets. Historians dispute some elements of this narrative as myth, but while Babylon Berlin may be imperfect history, it’s exhilarating entertainment. Its Berlin is all bright neon and dark shadows, decadent parties and sudden outbursts of violence, mysteries and underground plots. We all know the horrible ending to this story, but the characters in Babylon Berlin don’t, and seeing this tumultuous period through the lives of regular people living in the moment gives the whole thing an air of haunting pathos.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: Just shy of 16 hoursPicked By: Tim Ryan, Review Curation ManagerKilling Eve 89%What It Is: This badass British spy thriller follows two female leads — MI5 intelligence officer Eve (Sandra Oh) and international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) — who become obsessed with tracking each other down. Why You Should Watch It: There’s a reason Oh is getting finally getting her long-deserved award recognition for this role: She’s phenomenal as a mild-mannered government employee who heads up a task force to find a female assassin (an also-phenomenal Comer), beginning a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the two women. The BBC America series is also frequently incredibly funny, thanks to sharp writing from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag).Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunesCommitment: About 5.5 hoursPicked By: Jean Bentley, Assistant TV EditorPeaky Blinders 92%What It Is: A raw mob epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), a World War I veteran and leader of the “Peaky Blinders” gang, has started the family business of running a bookie service as well as providing local muscle. Why You Should Watch It: This gritty crime drama will keep you glued to your screen as Tommy tries to build his empire and cement his legacy, all while facing the ever-changing landscape of the new century post-WWI. Guns, gambling, influence, politics, and the streets — this show has it all. Great costume and set design lure viewers into 1919 England to experience the region s post-war trauma. See how far Tommy will go to make a buck and gain power and the collateral damage his family must endure because of it. The series did not offer a new season to U.S. audiences in 2018, but with season 5 coming in 2019, now is a perfect time to binge it.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 24 hoursPicked By: Shane Crocker, Motion Graphic DesignerChilling Adventures of Sabrina 81%What It Is: This comic book–adapted Netflix series from the creator of Riverdale is a dark reimagining of the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch story. Half-witch, half-mortal Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) refuses to sacrifice her human relationships in order to keep her witchy powers and must navigate the boundaries between the mortal and supernatural worlds. Why You Should Watch It: If you’re the kind of witch who wishes Halloween could be a year-long holiday, look no further than Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This show has plenty of campy magic and glamorous gore, but it’s more than flashy spells and Satanic references. Each of Sabrina’s allies — her aunts, cousin Ambrose, human friends, and demonic frenemies — has their own depth and intrigue, which makes their world colorful and worth a deep investment. It’s ultimately a coming-of-age story: Watching Sabrina come into her own, and change minds to do so, is exciting, empowering, and fun. She makes some big mistakes along the way, but who can blame her? She’s only just learning to play with hellfire.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 11 hoursPicked By: Sophie-Marie Prime, USC’s Rotten Tomatoes FellowForever 95%What It Is: Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen star as an ordinary married couple tethered to routine until a freak accident changes everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world. Why You Should Watch It: Much has been written about how Better Call Saul is an ode to the everyday (crime and dubious legal practices notwithstanding). They couldn t be more different, but if you re a fan of BCS, 2018 s Forever will appeal just as well. Created by Alan Yang of Master of None and featuring prolific comedic actors Rudolph and Armisen (do they ever sleep?), the show poses big questions while simultaneously offering tiny details for viewers to chew on long after the final episode of this compact series ends. Avoid spoilers as much as possible before indulging in this series, which somehow marries banality and longing to great effect.Where to Watch: AmazonCommitment: 4 hoursPicked By: Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorSchitt's Creek 93%What It Is: Schitt’s Creek is an amalgam of everything that is good and holy about Canadian entertainment. Why You Should Watch It: Led by Eugene Levy, his gorgeous son Dan, and their beautifully thick eyebrows, Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family, their fall from grace, and their new life in a tiny town surrounded by some of the most wonderful, eccentric, and underrated characters on TV. The series is a rare bird: both funny and heartwarming, while completely insane and totally relatable. In watching, I have laughed so hard I cried, but I have also cried so hard that I had to laugh (specifically, season 4, episode 6). The relationships, the chemistry, the number of wigs Moira owns, Alexis’ vocal fry, and so on — everything about this show is so perfectly curated that you would be hard pressed to find anything else like it on television.Where To Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, VuduCommitment: About 20 hoursPicked By: Zoey Moore, Community ManagerManiac 84%What It Is: Loosely based on a Norwegian show of the same name, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s mindtrip of a miniseries delves into the depths of the human mind with humor, heart, and just the right amount of heady conversations to keep you thinking. Why You Should Watch It: It’s the kind of show that can delicately explore the fragile folds that are the human mind and mental health, while still provoking a fully belly laugh (usually followed by a cathartic cry). Between Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s melancholy chemistry, the singular force of confidently neurotic nature that is Sonoya Mizuno, and Justin Theroux and Sally Field s “special” parent–child relationships (truly something to behold), you feel for each character you meet. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. It may sound kind of heady, but trust us, it’s worth the trip.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 6.5 hoursPicked By: Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation LeadTerrace House: Boys & Girls in the City What It Is: A reality series documenting the real lives of six roommates in Japan. Why You Should Watch It: For those who hate traditional reality TV and want insight into Japanese culture, this is your show. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of love triangles and conflict, but it’s more civilized. It’s the ultimate comfort watch! When you catch up with this season, there’s previous Terrace House series (“Boys and Girls in the City” and “Aloha State”) to enjoy!Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: There are 42 episodes available from the most recent season, all around 30 to 40 minutes each — and it runs through 52! The time commitment is A LOT, but SO worth it.Picked By: Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of ProductionHappy! 84%What It Is: Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Nick (Christopher Meloni), a degenerate hit man and ex cop, gets beaten up by mobsters only to wake up in the hospital seeing a cheerful blue unicorn named Happy (Patton Oswalt). Nick learns Happy is the imaginary friend of a kidnapped little girl named Hailey, who is being held captive by a demented Santa Claus. Happy won’t stop bothering Nick until they find Hailey and bring her to safety. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode. Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. Happy! is not for the faint of heart and is truly made for fans of antiheroes. The casting is also particularly fun, as Meloni is the polar opposite of his Law Order: SVU character. Think: the crazy cook in Wet Hot American Summer, but darker and more twisted.Where to Watch: Netflix, SyfyCommitment: About 6.5 hoursPicked By: Jason Blagman, AssistantElite 97%What It Is: Rich, sexy Spanish teens clash with working-class students at their elite private school, leading to murder. Why You Should Watch It: Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies meets Skins meets Cruel Intentions meets The O.C. meets Veronica Mars meets well, basically every single other of the very best teen dramas for this Spanish-language soap-to-end-all-soaps. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and  will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Pro tip: If you don t speak Spanish, Netflix will usually default to the dubbed version. To avoid that travesty, and make sure you select the European Spanish audio track.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 8 hoursPicked By: BentleyHappy Valley 98%What It Is: A kind of Fargo for the South of England, Happy Valley focuses on policewoman Catherine Cawood’s (Sarah Lancashire) personal and professional lives in the struggling, drug-ridden town for which the series is named. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried. Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. Happy Valley is another Netflix title that didn t release a new season in 2018, but will in 2019, making now a great time to binge.Where to Watch: Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, VuduCommitment: 12 hoursPicked by: Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefPose 98%What It Is: A look inside the underground ball scene in the 1980s, made famous by the documentary Paris Is Burning, in which competitors from various “houses” walk, dance, and/or perform in drag to win big trophies and bigger boosts social stature. Why You Should Watch It: That Pose is genuinely groundbreaking – it features a largely transgender cast, many of whom have not acted professionally before – was reason enough for many to tune in when the Ryan Murphy series premiered on FX in 2018. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. Porter, nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is a series standout, along with Indya Moore, whose complex relationship with married boy from the ’burbs Stan (Evan Peters) will break your heart.Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango Now, FX+, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTubeCommitment: 10 hoursPicked by: Meares Nearly 60 years ago in 1962, King Kong and Godzilla squared off in Japan, and King Kong shoved a giant tree into Godzilla’s mouth. The two would engage in a back-and-forth battle that featured atomic breath and lightning strikes, and King Kong would ultimately leave the grueling brawl victorious. The Ishirō Honda-directed film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, was the third Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and it was a wildly ambitious crossover event that was a smashing success in Japan, as it sold 11.2 million tickets during its initial theatrical run. In other words, audiences went bananas for it.Decades later, both Godzilla and King Kong have appeared in dozens of movies and animated series that have seen them battling three-headed monsters, genetically-modified roses with sharp teeth, and New York concrete. The two haven’t shared a screen together since that colossal battle in 1962, which is why the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feels like such an epic event. To get to this brawl, Legendary Studios embarked on a kaiju-sized film series called the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla (2014), then continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017) and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The three films have set the chess pieces, and now the two gigantic titans will tussle for the ultimate checkmate.(Photo by Everett Collection)In honor of their rematch, we rewatched the King Kong vs. Godzilla Versus episode that was released in 2019 and analyzed their filmographies in an attempt to crown a statistical champion based on box office receipts, property destruction, amount of screen time, and Tomatometer and Audience scores. Two monsters (and their many variations) enter, and only one leaves (unless there’s a tie, in which case, come back for the rematch).*Quick note Not all of the King Kong and Godzilla films have Tomatometer scores or reliable box office data. That’s why the numbers fluctuate in each round. Also, we’re sticking to feature-length films, and leaving out the animated series that both have appeared in.Round 1 TomatometerGodzilla: 61.8% average (32 films)King Kong: 55.8% average (8 films)Highest rated: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), 100%Lowest rated: King Kong Lives (1986), 0%(Photo by TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)It’s only fitting that we kick off the battle with an incredibly close match-up in which the Tomatometer averages are separated by a measly 3.8%. Both franchises started off really well as 1933 s King Kong (Certified Fresh at 98% on the Tomatometer) and 1954 s Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 93%) were both blockbusters that wowed people with their innovative photography and beautiful miniature sets. However, the quality of the films began to mirror one of Godzilla’s fights He’s winning! He’s losing… He’s winning! The movie famously tells the story of what happens after Kong survives the fall from the Empire State Building. In short, he gets a heart transplant, eats some alligators, finds a soulmate, and fathers a child. Marvel and Pixar both led the way again and the two newcomers could barely combine to beat the film in second place. For those in a Chicken Little panic over supposed dwindling ticket sales this year, this weekend certainly gave fuel to that fire with the top 10 films adding up to the lowest July weekend total since 2009.King of the Crop: Spider-Man Not Far From the Billion Club (Photo by © Columbia Pictures / © Marvel Studios/ Courtesy Everett Collection)Spider-Man: Far From Home took the lead again to no surprise for a second straight week. With 9.2 million on Thursday, it ranked as the 32nd highest-grossing film ever after 10 days in theaters. However, the drop to .3 million this weekend has put its numbers closer to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 than many of the top-tier MCU films. Raimi’s film had 5.1 million after 10 days and a .1 million second weekend. It finished its run with 3.5 million. Spider-Man: Homecoming made .2 million in its second weekend. Just remember that Far From Home also had a Tuesday opening (and the biggest one of all-time). Amongst the 35 films to have reached 5 million domestic, only Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Titanic, and Frozen made less in their second weekends than Far From Home. (Titanic’s .4 million in 1997 would be about .5 million today.) Worldwide the film has grossed over 7 million and will soon become the ninth film of the MCU to gross over a billion dollars.Rotten Returns: Stuber Disappoints with Million Start(Photo by Mark Hill/ © TM & copyright © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp.)Stuber may not be a mega-budgeted production at million, but unless you are a true indie or working under the Blumhouse margin, an million opening is just not going to cut it. Thirty six films in 2019 have opened in 3,000 theaters or more and only Missing Link (.9 million) and Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King (.1 million) – both Certified Fresh at 89% on the Tomatometer, incidentally – grossed less in their opening weekends. (A Dog’s Journey made .03 million.) Stuber, with a Tomatometer score of 46% currently, joins Winnie the Pooh, Ramona and Beezus, Monte Carlo, and Katy Perry: Part of Me as the films this past decade to open between million and million in July. They all posted final tallies between .1 million and .7 million. None of those films were rated “R” though.Top 10 and Beyond: Crawl Takes Small Bite as Disney Offerings Show LegsToy Story 4 crossed the 0 million line worldwide this weekend. Plus, the once-dubbed “disappointment” from burned analysts is only the 23rd highest-grossing film ever after 24 days with over 6 million at the domestic box office. Though the film is right in line with Toy Story 3’s fourth weekend of million, it did slip slightly behind during the week from being million ahead of the third film’s pace to just around million. No worries, however, as it is still on pace for a 0 million haul in North America. The fim is over 1 million worldwide. To finish up the Disney dominance news this week, their live-action version of Aladdin has officially become one of the 50th highest-grossing films of all-time in the world with over 0 million. The Lion King is already gearing up to join that list having grossed .7 million in China this weekend. Then, of course, Avengers: Endgame grabbed an additional .8 million across the globe and is now less than million away from capturing Avatar’s all-time record with .780 billion.(Photo by © Paramount Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection)Over to the horror side of the top 10, Paramount chose not to screen Alexandre Aja’s alligator horror film, Crawl, for critics this week. Nevertheless those that reviewed it gifted it with an 88% on the Tomatometer and it s already Certified Fresh. It may have bested Stuber for the newcomer crown this weekend, but its million start is not entirely a cause for celebration, even with just a .5 million budget. That is more than the .9 million that another mid-July alligator film called Lake Placid opened to back in 1999. That film would have opened to about .7 million in today’s dollars and finished with .7 million. The smart money is on Crawl finishing with less, unless word-of-mouth – which again, is good – pushes it further.Ari Aster’s Midsommar has .4 million after 12 days, which puts it between fellow Wednesday openers No Escape, the 2015 terrorist thriller, and the 2004 remake of Around the World in 80 Days. That may suggest a finish in the - million range. Except Midsommar’s .5 million weekend was less than either of theirs. The film would need .2 million to pass A24’s first wide opener, The Witch, for fifth place on their all-time chart. Midsommar is nevertheless going to finish no worse than right behind it in sixth place with more than The Disaster Artist’s .1 million. Annabelle Comes Home is now over million, placing the film firmly between the third weekend grosses and totals of The First Purge (.10 million, .48 million) and Rocky Balboa (.01 million, .27 million), so figure a final tally in there while it currently stands at over 3 million worldwide – far less than either of the previous films but more than enough to turn a profit.Coincidences in box office are always fun to find and this week’s example comes with Danny Boyle’s Yesterday, which has become the director’s second highest-grossing film ever. That has nothing to do with coincidence though. Actually the .75 million it grossed this weekend and a total at .3 million puts the film in league with another tale of a singer from the U.K. that opened in June and was released by Universal some nine years ago. That film was Get Him To The Greek. It grossed .1 million in its third weekend and had .8 million after 17 days on its way to .9 million. On the Specialty Box Office: The Farewell Shows Signs of Being a Breakout HitFinally, in limited release news, Bleecker Street’s The Art of Self-Defense (Certified Fresh at 92%) grossed 1,000 in seven theaters. That per-theater-average of ,285 is just a bit less than Late Night’s ,593 average in 14 theaters when it first opened. Amazon expanded that film into over 2,200 theaters in weekend two and it has grossed more than million to date. Bleecker will expand Art into over 500 theaters next weekend and it is the ninth film in Bleecker’s history (out of 32 releases) to score 90% or higher on the Tomatometer. But the developing story may be that of Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, with Awkwafina. One of the most beloved films out of Sundance this year grossed 1,330 this weekend in just four theaters. That is the 15th best opening ever for a film launched in just four venues and the third best for A24. Moonlight (2,075) and Lady Bird (4,437) opened just a bit stronger and they, respectively, rank third and first amongst all A24 releases. The Farewell also maintains a perfect Certified Fresh score of 100% on the Tomatometer. It is the 28th A24 film to score 90% or higher out the distributor s 77 releases. This Time Last Year: Hotel Transylvania 3 Bests Skyscraper(Photo by © Sony Pictures Releasing)Adam Sandler’s ghoulish animated series showed no signs of wavering as Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation got its first taste of the box office outside of September and opened at number 1 with million. Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 61% to second place, but that was still good enough to keep back Dwayne Johnson’s attempt at Die Hard in Skyscraper, which opened to just .9 million. In limited release, Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade opened to 3,797 in just four theaters. The Top 10 films grossed 4.03 million and averaged 67.7% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 did an estimated 3.04 million and averaged 66.9%. It was actually the lowest Top 10 total for a weekend in July since the July 31-August 2, 2009 weekend when Funny People led the way with .65 million and a top 10 total of 7.14 million.

Having been hand-picked by Aretha Franklin herself to play the Queen of Soul in the biopic Respect, Jennifer Hudson tells Rotten Tomatoes she felt the pressure to deliver and to honor the icon in her hotly anticipated on-screen portrayal. Talking exclusively to RT about her approach to becoming Franklin for the new film, directed by Leisl Tommy, Hudson says she wanted to capture Franklin’s spirit on stage as well as off, where she was dedicated to her family, her craft, and to her activism, but also bring her own flavor to the role.Respect is in theaters Friday August 13, 2021.On an Apple device? Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Just out of curiosity why d you want to go back to genre?Jim Jarmusch: Well, I don t even think of it really is a horror film exactly. I think of it as a comedy with some dark threads in it. I m not real analytical. I wanted to make the first idea of it. I wanted to make a film with humor similar to a film we made years ago called Coffee and Cigarettes. It felt like the same job. That s funny because here we call it Coffee, Cigarettes, and Zombies.Jarmusch: I mean that s sort of the impetus for the whole thing so honestly that s good to hear.Tell us about the premiere at Cannes.Jarmusch: It was pretty weird, to be honest. It s like showing our film to some film people, but also like 1,500 executives from L Oréal. It s kind of strange. But that s part of Cannes. Cannes is more and more each year kind of like a convention. I wasn t in favor of it being the opening night film, but the people who financed it, and my producers, I sort of let them all vote, and said, I will defer to what you guys all think. I kind of think they wanted it because they could get our cast on the red carpet. But other than that I don t know the motives. It was interesting. I don t want to just totally dis it. It was weird for me though, I must say. But I was also happy to be there together with members of the cast and Fred Elmes, our DP, and Catherine George, our costume designer. So you know, it was a positive thing on some level. [Laughs] I guess. But that standing ovation was pretty great. Jarmusch: Yeah, it was so fun. For me, the best things I love about Cannes are I like the press conferences when you have your collaborators there and I don t know that was kind of fun. And Bill Murray during the photo call was hilarious and amazing. The Dead Don t Die opens in select theaters on June 14th.
When We Were Kings (1996) 98% Gibney says:  So this was something where Leon Gast in 1974 was in Zaire while Muhammad Ali and George Foreman were there for their Rumble in the Jungle, one of the great fights in history. Gast was there  to hang out with Ali, and that s where the most riveting footage comes from is:  as Ali gathers all these kids who are rallying to his side, singing Ali bomaye. You see Ali, who had passed his prime as a boxer, but was at the height of his intellectual powers, that is just extraordinary to see now, so full of vitality, such a leader. And then in the fight itself, he wins the fight with his wits, his brain, not his brawn, though he ultimately knocks Foreman out. It s a great film, and there s something at the end that s particularly worth noting now: Ali was invited to the Harvard commencement, and gave a speech, a wonderful speech to the kids about making a difference and then somebody shouted out, Hey, Ali! Give us a poem. And Ali thinks for a second, and he says, Me. We. At this moment in time, it seems the perfect distillation of social distancing and isolation and how that can lead us to understanding and appreciating the collective. Critics Consensus: An engrossing documentary that s as much about a time and a place as it is about a fight.Stream now on DirecTV or MaxGo.  Looking for more great shows and movies to binge?

The nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, and many of the categories went just as the pundits had predicted. Plenty of noms for Watchmen? Yep, it got more than any other title. Lots of love for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? The show will have 20 chances to win come September. Ozark is also now officially – as it was expected to be this year – an Emmys favorite.Of course, along with the expected came the shocks – and there seemed to be more of them than usual as Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Josh Gad, and Tatiana Maslany read out the names. Acting locks like Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul or Russell Crowe for The Loudest Voice missed out on nominations, while critically favored genre shows like The Mandalorian and What We Do In the Shadows snatched up spots in the Outstanding Drama and Comedy Series categories, respectively. And then there was Zendaya s surprise nom for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series – a surprise that, frankly, we saw coming.Read on for our full list of snubs and surprises then let us know which nomination – or lack thereof – had you spit-taking your cereal Tuesday morning.SURPRISE: Anthony Anderson and Don Cheadle Defy Odds(Photo by ABC/Ali Goldstein; Nicole Wilder/Showtime)Both Anderson (black-ish) and Cheadle (Black Monday) were on the cusp when it came to odds-on favorites in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category. The surprise here is that the black-ish and Black Monday stars both landed nominations, leading to one of the biggest snubs of the morning SNUB: Larry David Left Out, Though Curb Your Enthusiasm Recognized(Photo by HBO)Curb Your Enthusiasm landed a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, but series star David found himself locked out of the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category. Season 10 of the show is Certified Fresh at 95% on the Tomatometer, and, as the series’ centerpiece, the credit due would normally be given to six-time nominee David.SURPRISE: Tracee Ellis Ross Lands Her Fourth Comedy Lead Actress Nomination(Photo by ABC/Mitch Haaseth)Ross’ nomination on Tuesday makes her a four-time nominee in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role as Rainbow Johnson on black-ish. She was previously nominated in 2016, 2017, and 2018, but has not won in the category. Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Merritt Wever (Run), Awkwafina (Nora From Queens), Elle Fanning (The Great), Kristen Bell (The Good Place), and Zoë Kravitz (High Fidelity) are among the actresses who were thought to have better odds of landing the nomination.SNUB: Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn Overlooked for Better Call Saul(Photo by Greg Lewis/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)Though Better Call Saul was recognized in the Outstanding Drama Series category, outrage over Odenkirk and Seehorn’s exclusion in the nominations quickly rippled across social media. Odenkirk lost the Lead Actor in a Drama Series nomination to surprise nominee Steve Carell (The Morning Show), while Seehorn, who was not a favorite to win a nomination, saw unexpected nominees Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) and Samira Wiley (The Handmaid s Tale) take spots in the Supporting Actress category instead.SURPRISE: Zendaya May Have Been a Surprise for Some…(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)Rotten Tomatoes bet on Zendaya as Lead Actress in a Drama for her expert turn as Rue Bennett in Euphoria. The young star trailed previous winners in the category Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid s Tale) and Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) in odds for a nomination, but prevailed.SURPRISE: What We Do in the Shadows Sucks Up a Nomination for Top Comedy Series(Photo by Russ Martin/©FX)FX vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows was another long shot for a nomination that Rotten Tomatoes bet on. With 100/1 odds on Gold Derby, the comedy spoiled the chances of so many other titles, including Better Things, Run, The Great, Modern Family, and more.SNUB: Ramy Loses Out to the Bloodsuckers for Comedy Series(Photo by Craig Blankenhorn/Hulu)Among those knocked out of contention by What We Do in the Shadows’ surprise showing, Ramy was a top-10 favorite to win a nomination in the category. The series’ star Ramy Youssef did land nominations for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and for Directing for a Comedy Series, however.SURPRISE: The Mandalorian Lands Best Drama Series Nod(Photo by Disney+)Rotten Tomatoes argued for drama–adventure–space opera series The Mandalorian to win all the awards for its moving introduction to the cutest Star Wars hero ever, but it still came as a huge surprise that enough Television Academy voters would feel the same and give the series an unexpected spot in the Best Drama Series nominations. Pose, The Morning Show, Big Little Lies, This Is Us, The Outsider, Euphoria, and Homeland were all seen as favorites ahead of The Mandalorian, which ended the day tied with Schitt’s Creek and Saturday Night Live with 15 nominations each, behind only Watchmen, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ozark, and Succession. Even though he can’t talk, can Baby Yoda still present an award in September?Snub: Three Strikes and Reese Is Out(Photo by Apple TV+)Well, we officially live in a world in which Reese Witherspoon can star in three prestige series in a single year and not get a single Emmy nomination for her efforts. Witherspoon was considered, if not a shoo-in, than a highly likely contender for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for FX’s drama Little Fires Everywhere, but failed to get a nod; her co-star Kerry Washington was among the five nominees, though. Elsewhere, Witherspoon was an outside chance for an upset in the Lead Actress Drama category for Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and for HBO’s Big Little Lies, the latter of which she was nominated for in 2017 when it was categorized as a “limited series.” She was recognized for neither role this year, but Morning Show co-star Jennifer Aniston is among those still in the game for Lead Actress come September.SNUB: Academy Goes Quiet on Russell Crowe’s Loudest Voice (Photo by Saeed Adyani/Netflix)On paper, Showtime’s Fox News–focused limited series looked like the kind of thing that would sweep the Emmys: A topical series about TV co-created by the director of Spotlight and starring Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts? Start engraving those statuettes! And yet, when it premiered in mid 2019, critics were decidedly mixed on what was seen as a pretty shallow read of a complex workplace story. One thing no one was mixed on, though, was Crowe’s portrayal of late Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, which was described as a triumph and reason enough to tune in. Yet, a year after the series began, it seems voters mostly forgot about the Gladiator star’s work, with fresh faces Jeremy Pope (Hollywood) and Paul Mescal (Normal People) edging Crowe out of the category.SURPRISE: Octavia Spencer Is In, the Unbelievable Duo Is Out(Photo by Netflix)Another category full of surprises was Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, where Merritt Wever and Kaitlyn Dever were expected to be nominated for their work in Netflix’s acclaimed Unbelievable. (Toni Collette received a nod for her supporting work in the limited series.) With Wever and Dever missing out, the doors opened for Unorthodox’s Shira Haas – not a huge shock, she was always considered a strong chance – and Spencer for Self Made. While Spencer’s work as Madam C.J. Walker, the country’s first African American self-made millionaire, has been heralded by critics, the series itself was considered just a minor success, scoring 68% on the Tomatometer. Going into nominations morning, Spencer’s odds in the category were 100/1 over at Gold Derby. Her nomination makes this one of several categories where Black nominees make up the majority of nominations: in this case, Spencer is joined by Regina King (Watchmen) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).SNUB: The Morning Show and Pose Pushed Aside for Killing Eve(Photo by Apple TV+)Despite airing its weakest season yet, according to the Tomatometer, spy thriller Killing Eve managed to scrape into the Outstanding Drama list, pushing aside more favored titles like Apple TV+’s splashy The Morning Show and FX’s groundbreaking Pose. The former, starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, was never a critical darling, but star power and a strong awards campaign were expected to give it an edge; the latter is one of the most celebrated series on TV, coming off a 97% Certified Fresh second season. It was a good morning for Killing Eve overall, with both Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer earning lead actress nods and Fiona Shaw picking up a nom for her supporting work.SURPRISE: Hollywood’s Jeremy Pope Outpaces El Camino’s Aaron Paul(Photo by Saeed Adyani/Netflix)As noted above, the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category produced some of the biggest shocks of the morning. Not only was Russell Crowe left off the list, but Paul missed out for his return to Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad sequel movie, El Camino. Into those voids stepped Broadway star Pope, whom critics cited as a standout in the Ryan Murphy–produced Hollywood, about the Golden Age of America’s movie industry. Pope played screenwriter Archie Coleman in the series, which imagined an old-school Hollywood in which a major studio cast a Black actress in the lead role for a big-budget production. In 2019, Pope became just the sixth person ever to be nominated for Tony awards in two separate categories in the one year, for his work in Choir Boy and Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.SURPRISE: Steve Carrell Misses Out for Space Force, But Launches Into the Drama Big Leagues(Photo by Netflix)Prior to Tuesday morning, many thought Carell’s best chance of Emmy love lied with Space Force, but Netflix’s big-budget comedy went mostly unnoticed by the Academy and Carell missed out. His consolation prize: a surprise nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Morning Show, in which he plays the lecherous and newly unemployed breakfast TV host Mitch Kessler. Gold Derby’s experts had Carell at 100/1 odds for the category. No doubt fans of Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk are furious right now.SNUB: Better Things and Creator and Star Pamela Adlon(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/FX)Largely considered one the best comedies on TV, FX’s Better Things is coming off two 100% Fresh seasons. Its star, Adlon, writes and directs every single episode. (At least every episode since season 1.) Sheer degree of difficulty would suggest that Adlon would be among the nominees this morning for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and the show recognized overall, and many felt it was its time. And yet, Better Things scored not one single nomination. It may not be the most headline-grabbing snub, but it s perhaps the one that hits hardest.Thumbnail image: Disney+

Ghcxuf It looks like the world really is more interesting with Clarice Starling in it.On February 11, CBS will premiere new series Clarice, a psychological horror drama that follows what happened to the FBI Academy’s famed behavioral science expert after the events depicted in author Thomas Harris’ novel, The Silence of the Lambs. Set in 1993 — meant to be a year after the timing of director Jonathan Demme and writer Ted Tally’s film adaptation of that book — fans will see how she is dealing (or not dealing) with the trauma of her experiences with serial killers Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) and Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) as she returns to the field to investigate more murders and mayhem. And, because series creators Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet are not concentrating on plots straight from a Harris novel, viewers will also see a different version of Clarice herself — and not just because she’s now being played by Australian actress Rebecca Breeds instead of Jodie Foster’s Academy Award–winning depiction of the FBI officer in Lambs or Julianne Moore’s depiction of her in 2001’s Hannibal.Clarice Season 1 Keyart Exclusive Debut: (Photo by CBS)Click image to open the full-sized poster in a new tab. “The story continues to be told; it continues to evolve,” Breeds told Rotten Tomatoes from the show s filming home base of Toronto after a night of shooting the new series’ seventh episode. “So I need to be able to continue to invent who she is in different scenarios. So I have to pull from what is authentic and what is me, because that s all I can do.”To wit: The poster for the series, which Rotten Tomatoes is exclusively debuting here, is a metamorphosis of the cover associated with Lambs. While Dawn Baillie s art for that movie shows a moth blocking the mouth of Foster’s Clarice, this key art — designed CBS creative marketing team working in collaboration with an ag 😈😈

bob页面 (Click to enlarge.)After five grueling rounds of competition that laid waste to holiday classics like It s a Wonderful Life, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and even the perennial is-it-a-Christmas-movie-or-not fan favorite Die Hard, we can finally crown a winner for our Christmas Movie Showdown. In the end, the Jon Favreau/Will Ferrell comedy Elf lost by a convincing 20% margin to Home Alone, which, incidentally, also celebrated its 30th anniversary back in November. To go with that milestone, we can now unofficially officially declare that Home Alone is the Greatest Christmas Movie Ever!As always, big thanks to everyone who participated in the various polls, and we hope this bit of silly fun helped in some way to brighten what is certainly an unusual holiday season for most. With that in mind, please stay safe and warm as we enter the new year, and stay tuned for our next showdown!Final Round ResultRound 1 Results | Round 2 Results | Round 3 Results | Round 4 ResultsRound 1 Results | Round 2 Results | Round 3 Results | Round 4 ResultsOn an Apple device? (Photo by © MGM / Courtesy Everett Collection)It is slightly bizarre to even contemplate predictions right now as everything about awards season is up in the air: release dates, likely competitors, how festivals will play out. Still, it seems not even a pandemic can stop Hollywood s efforts to reward itself, with the Oscars, Golden Globes, and others determined that the shows – albeit delayed – will go on. And so, continuing our series of “Ridiculously Early Oscar Predictions,” we arrive at our Best Actress predictions. Yes, it s early given how little is known for sure, but this isn’t exactly a normal Oscar year.As with our Best Actor predictions, our Best Actress picks are basically educated guesswork. Several films have yet to be screened and there is still plenty of time for Oscar submissions. No matter what happens, the upcoming season will make history as the first in which films will not have to screen in theaters to contend for Hollywood’s top prizes, which sets up some intriguing possibilities for which films could break through and snag nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced earlier this summer that the Oscars would be postponed by two months to April 25, 2021, and extended release-date eligibility rules to February 28, 2021, in addition to allowing streaming-only submissions and making all eligible films available on the Academy screening library, forgoing the typical member screenings.A number of films likely to be in the conversation have actually already screened and earned Tomatometer scores, and pundits are already singling out the major standout performances in them. Our list does include some performances yet to be seen, but for which pre-release buzz and expectations are high. With that said, some on this list may end up in the Supporting Actress category.Whether we like it or not, the campaigns are quietly underway, the conversation has started, and we’re now ready to join it. If history and basic math tell us anything, it is that most of these names won’t make it to Oscar night, but we’re pretty confident many of them will be right up there in the awards chatter. So please read on as we break down our ridiculously early picks for 2020 s Best Actress contenders.Don t agree with our picks? Have at us in the comments.Julia Garner
