But rather than meet face-to-whatever, the interaction occurs via the ancient, extinct race s super-advanced A.I. technology, which humanity struggles to understand, communicate with, and ultimately control.Why You Should Watch It: It s been 10 years since Syfy s Battlestar Galactica remake from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) went off the air. The series, which topped our list of the 100 best sci-fi series of all time, won worldwide fans through its gritty space-opera storylines about the human struggle with and against intelligent machines. The BSG world felt lived in, and its characters, both human and machine, presented a seemingly viable space-based future.The Expanse, which Amazon dramatically rescued from cancellation this year, is BSG s very worthy successor in offering a similarly complex sci-fi tale with engaging characters and award-worthy production design. Those fans were always going to show up for Barry, no matter how good (or bad) it was. Fortunately, the series does a magnificent job balancing Hader s natural boyish charm and his less frequently utilized — but still incredibly effective — proficiency at communicating deep pathos (see: The Skeleton Twins), and he s aided by a stellar ensemble that includes Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Goldberg, and Henry Winkler in one of his finest roles in years.Barry begins with a funny idea, infuses it with real emotional investment, and tosses in a few Oh, sh ! moments just to keep you on your toes. It was a time that produced a flowering of artistic expression — from the Bauhaus Movement to The Threepenny Opera, not to mention such cinematic masterworks as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel — and a moment of (relative) tolerance for LGBTQ people. It was also a time of political upheaval, during which a democratic government attempted to hold together a nation struggling with extreme economic insecurity, a time when communists and fascists brawled in the streets. Historians dispute some elements of this narrative as myth, but while Babylon Berlin may be imperfect history, it’s exhilarating entertainment. Its Berlin is all bright neon and dark shadows, decadent parties and sudden outbursts of violence, mysteries and underground plots. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode.Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Pro tip: If you don t speak Spanish, Netflix will usually default to the dubbed version. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried.Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. Porter, nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is a series standout, along with Indya Moore, whose complex relationship with married boy from the ’burbs Stan (Evan Peters) will break your heart.Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango Now, FX+, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTubeCommitment: 10 hoursPicked by: Meares Nearly 60 years ago in 1962, King Kong and Godzilla squared off in Japan, and King Kong shoved a giant tree into Godzilla’s mouth. The two would engage in a back-and-forth battle that featured atomic breath and lightning strikes, and King Kong would ultimately leave the grueling brawl victorious. The Ishirō Honda-directed film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, was the third Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and it was a wildly ambitious crossover event that was a smashing success in Japan, as it sold 11.2 million tickets during its initial theatrical run. In other words, audiences went bananas for it.Decades later, both Godzilla and King Kong have appeared in dozens of movies and animated series that have seen them battling three-headed monsters, genetically-modified roses with sharp teeth, and New York concrete. The two haven’t shared a screen together since that colossal battle in 1962, which is why the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feels like such an epic event. To get to this brawl, Legendary Studios embarked on a kaiju-sized film series called the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla (2014), then continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017) and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The three films have set the chess pieces, and now the two gigantic titans will tussle for the ultimate checkmate.(Photo by Everett Collection)In honor of their rematch, we rewatched the King Kong vs. Godzilla Versus episode that was released in 2019 and analyzed their filmographies in an attempt to crown a statistical champion based on box office receipts, property destruction, amount of screen time, and Tomatometer and Audience scores. Two monsters (and their many variations) enter, and only one leaves (unless there’s a tie, in which case, come back for the rematch).*Quick note Not all of the King Kong and Godzilla films have Tomatometer scores or reliable box office data. Both franchises started off really well as 1933 s King Kong (Certified Fresh at 98% on the Tomatometer) and 1954 s Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 93%) were both blockbusters that wowed people with their innovative photography and beautiful miniature sets. However, the quality of the films began to mirror one of Godzilla’s fights He’s winning! He’s losing… He’s winning! He’s losing…What sealed the deal for Godzilla’s victory is the 0% score for 1986’s King Kong Lives. The movie famously tells the story of what happens after Kong survives the fall from the Empire State Building. In short, he gets a heart transplant, eats some alligators, finds a soulmate, and fathers a child. With 9.2 million on Thursday, it ranked as the 32nd highest-grossing film ever after 10 days in theaters. However, the drop to .3 million this weekend has put its numbers closer to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 than many of the top-tier MCU films. Raimi’s film had 5.1 million after 10 days and a .1 million second weekend. It finished its run with 3.5 million. Spider-Man: Homecoming made .2 million in its second weekend. Just remember that Far From Home also had a Tuesday opening (and the biggest one of all-time). Amongst the 35 films to have reached 5 million domestic, only Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Titanic, and Frozen made less in their second weekends than Far From Home. (Titanic’s .4 million in 1997 would be about .5 million today.) Thirty six films in 2019 have opened in 3,000 theaters or more and only Missing Link (.9 million) and Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King (.1 million) – both Certified Fresh at 89% on the Tomatometer, incidentally – grossed less in their opening weekends. (A Dog’s Journey made .03 million.) Stuber, with a Tomatometer score of 46% currently, joins Winnie the Pooh, Ramona and Beezus, Monte Carlo, and Katy Perry: Part of Me as the films this past decade to open between million and million in July. They all posted final tallies between .1 million and .7 million. None of those films were rated “R” though.Top 10 and Beyond: Crawl Takes Small Bite as Disney Offerings Show LegsToy Story 4 crossed the 0 million line worldwide this weekend. Plus, the once-dubbed “disappointment” from burned analysts is only the 23rd highest-grossing film ever after 24 days with over 6 million at the domestic box office. Though the film is right in line with Toy Story 3’s fourth weekend of million, it did slip slightly behind during the week from being million ahead of the third film’s pace to just around million. No worries, however, as it is still on pace for a 0 million haul in North America. The fim is over 1 million worldwide.To finish up the Disney dominance news this week, their live-action version of Aladdin has officially become one of the 50th highest-grossing films of all-time in the world with over 0 million. The Lion King is already gearing up to join that list having grossed .7 million in China this weekend. Then, of course, Avengers: Endgame grabbed an additional .8 million across the globe and is now less than million away from capturing Avatar’s all-time record with .780 billion.(Photo by © Paramount Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection)Over to the horror side of the top 10, Paramount chose not to screen Alexandre Aja’s alligator horror film, Crawl, for critics this week. Nevertheless those that reviewed it gifted it with an 88% on the Tomatometer and it s already Certified Fresh. It may have bested Stuber for the newcomer crown this weekend, but its million start is not entirely a cause for celebration, even with just a .5 million budget. That is more than the .9 million that another mid-July alligator film called Lake Placid opened to back in 1999. That film would have opened to about .7 million in today’s dollars and finished with .7 million. The smart money is on Crawl finishing with less, unless word-of-mouth – which again, is good – pushes it further.Ari Aster’s Midsommar has .4 million after 12 days, which puts it between fellow Wednesday openers No Escape, the 2015 terrorist thriller, and the 2004 remake of Around the World in 80 Days. That may suggest a finish in the - million range. Except Midsommar’s .5 million weekend was less than either of theirs. The film would need .2 million to pass A24’s first wide opener, The Witch, for fifth place on their all-time chart. Midsommar is nevertheless going to finish no worse than right behind it in sixth place with more than The Disaster Artist’s .1 million. Annabelle Comes Home is now over million, placing the film firmly between the third weekend grosses and totals of The First Purge (.10 million, .48 million) and Rocky Balboa (.01 million, .27 million), so figure a final tally in there while it currently stands at over 3 million worldwide – far less than either of the previous films but more than enough to turn a profit.Coincidences in box office are always fun to find and this week’s example comes with Danny Boyle’s Yesterday, which has become the director’s second highest-grossing film ever. That has nothing to do with coincidence though. Actually the .75 million it grossed this weekend and a total at .3 million puts the film in league with another tale of a singer from the U.K. that opened in June and was released by Universal some nine years ago. That film was Get Him To The Greek. It grossed .1 million in its third weekend and had .8 million after 17 days on its way to .9 million.On the Specialty Box Office: The Farewell Shows Signs of Being a Breakout HitFinally, in limited release news, Bleecker Street’s The Art of Self-Defense (Certified Fresh at 92%) grossed 1,000 in seven theaters. That per-theater-average of ,285 is just a bit less than Late Night’s ,593 average in 14 theaters when it first opened. Amazon expanded that film into over 2,200 theaters in weekend two and it has grossed more than million to date. Bleecker will expand Art into over 500 theaters next weekend and it is the ninth film in Bleecker’s history (out of 32 releases) to score 90% or higher on the Tomatometer.But the developing story may be that of Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, with Awkwafina. One of the most beloved films out of Sundance this year grossed 1,330 this weekend in just four theaters. That is the 15th best opening ever for a film launched in just four venues and the third best for A24. Moonlight (2,075) and Lady Bird (4,437) opened just a bit stronger and they, respectively, rank third and first amongst all A24 releases. The Farewell also maintains a perfect Certified Fresh score of 100% on the Tomatometer. Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 61% to second place, but that was still good enough to keep back Dwayne Johnson’s attempt at Die Hard in Skyscraper, which opened to just .9 million. In limited release, Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade opened to 3,797 in just four theaters. The Top 10 films grossed 4.03 million and averaged 67.7% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 did an estimated 3.04 million and averaged 66.9%. It was actually the lowest Top 10 total for a weekend in July since the July 31-August 2, 2009 weekend when Funny People led the way with .65 million and a top 10 total of 7.14 million.

Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Just out of curiosity why d you want to go back to genre?Jim Jarmusch: Well, I don t even think of it really is a horror film exactly. I think of it as a comedy with some dark threads in it. I m not real analytical. I wanted to make the first idea of it. I wanted to make a film with humor similar to a film we made years ago called Coffee and Cigarettes. It felt like the same job.That s funny because here we call it Coffee, Cigarettes, and Zombies.Jarmusch: I mean that s sort of the impetus for the whole thing so honestly that s good to hear.Tell us about the premiere at Cannes.Jarmusch: It was pretty weird, to be honest. It s like showing our film to some film people, but also like 1,500 executives from L Oréal. It s kind of strange. But that s part of Cannes. Cannes is more and more each year kind of like a convention. I wasn t in favor of it being the opening night film, but the people who financed it, and my producers, I sort of let them all vote, and said, I will defer to what you guys all think. I kind of think they wanted it because they could get our cast on the red carpet. But other than that I don t know the motives. It was interesting. I don t want to just totally dis it. It was weird for me though, I must say. But I was also happy to be there together with members of the cast and Fred Elmes, our DP, and Catherine George, our costume designer. So you know, it was a positive thing on some level. [Laughs] I guess.But that standing ovation was pretty great. Jarmusch: Yeah, it was so fun. For me, the best things I love about Cannes are I like the press conferences when you have your collaborators there and I don t know that was kind of fun. And Bill Murray during the photo call was hilarious and amazing.The Dead Don t Die opens in select theaters on June 14th.

Gast was there to hang out with Ali, and that s where the most riveting footage comes from is: as Ali gathers all these kids who are rallying to his side, singing Ali bomaye. You see Ali, who had passed his prime as a boxer, but was at the height of his intellectual powers, that is just extraordinary to see now, so full of vitality, such a leader. And then in the fight itself, he wins the fight with his wits, his brain, not his brawn, though he ultimately knocks Foreman out. It s a great film, and there s something at the end that s particularly worth noting now: Ali was invited to the Harvard commencement, and gave a speech, a wonderful speech to the kids about making a difference and then somebody shouted out, Hey, Ali! Give us a poem. And Ali thinks for a second, and he says, Me. We. At this moment in time, it seems the perfect distillation of social distancing and isolation and how that can lead us to understanding and appreciating the collective. And so, continuing our series of “Ridiculously Early Oscar Predictions,” we arrive at our Best Actress predictions. Yes, it s early given how little is known for sure, but this isn’t exactly a normal Oscar year.As with our Best Actor predictions, our Best Actress picks are basically educated guesswork. Several films have yet to be screened and there is still plenty of time for Oscar submissions. No matter what happens, the upcoming season will make history as the first in which films will not have to screen in theaters to contend for Hollywood’s top prizes, which sets up some intriguing possibilities for which films could break through and snag nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced earlier this summer that the Oscars would be postponed by two months to April 25, 2021, and extended release-date eligibility rules to February 28, 2021, in addition to allowing streaming-only submissions and making all eligible films available on the Academy screening library, forgoing the typical member screenings.A number of films likely to be in the conversation have actually already screened and earned Tomatometer scores, and pundits are already singling out the major standout performances in them. Our list does include some performances yet to be seen, but for which pre-release buzz and expectations are high. With that said, some on this list may end up in the Supporting Actress category.Whether we like it or not, the campaigns are quietly underway, the conversation has started, and we’re now ready to join it.
