Since then, the X-Men franchise has spread out in myriad ways, with highlights including adapting the time-splitting classic Days of Future Past, the Western-inflected Logan (nominated for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar!), and introducing the meta Merc With A Mouth Deadpool into the mix. With New Mutants finally out, we re taking a look at all the X-Men movies ranked by Tomatometer.

And that difference may cause fans of the mothership series – or its Netflix cousin, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – to look at it with some pause. Some of those fears may be unfounded, as Katy Keene charts a new corner of the Archie Comics world on television. Join us as we examine some of the program’s unique details and why it fits in both The CW’s lineup and a place not too far from Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse).It s Got A Magical Tone(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)From his earliest discussions about the program, executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa promised it would have a magical tone. In much the same way Riverdale’s atmosphere stems from film noir and the series occasionally flirts with horror tropes, Katy Keene’s sense of magic seems to come from romantic comedies in which the world itself is, on the whole, a good place. The city Katy (Lucy Hale) walks through is brighter, its denizens smile widely, and a song could break out at any moment.And although the series would seem to set up romantic travails for its four principal characters and each has someone in their lives their truest romance is with the city itself and the sense that anything can happen there. Compared to the way the Riverdale gang seem to loathe their hometown and the soul of Greendale seems a secondary concern for the Sabrina characters, the love of place is a refreshing change – but it might drive those less enamored with New York a little crazy.It s Set Sometime In Rivedale s Future(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)Though the program avoids specifics in its early episodes, the show takes place sometime in Riverdale’s future. Some reports indicated a five year gap exists between them, but we saw no indication of that. Early on, Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) makes references to the time spent between leaving town with her father (as seen last year on Riverdale), but avoids elaborating too much on where she’s been. Additionally, Katy herself is a contemporary of Veronica Lodge (Camilla Mendes) – who availed herself of Katy’s costume-making skills on Riverdale earlier this season – but tells the viewers in the first episode she has been working at Lacy’s Department Store for three years. Perhaps her guest appearance on the February 5th episode of Riverdale will clear up the question of time. If Katy is already working at Lacy s when Veronica heads to New York for some catching-up and shopping, then we know the two shows are within three years of each other.At the same time, the lack of a precise time gap offers both shows some flexibility in terms of future crossovers or characters making long-term migrations from one series to the other. It also means events on Katy Keene are less likely to conflict with Riverdale. Luckily for both shows, Sabrina takes place in an alternate reality and keeps its Devil far from The CW.Katy Is Your Narrator(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)Like Jughead before her, Katy narrates the goings-on of the story. Although, from the episodes we’ve seen so far, she is only privy to her own thoughts and her own life. But also like Mr. Jones, she seems to have some omniscience or future knowledge about her life and may be speaking from some future point in time.Created by Bill Woggon and first debuting in 1945’s Wilbur Comics #5, Katy was a popular character in the Archie stable for roughly 15 years. She appeared in various Archie Comics titles and, eventually, her own self-titled comic, in which the twenty-something character aspired to become a model, actor, and singer. Reader engagement was high, as the company encouraged fans to submit their own dress ideas for Katy to wear. But as the character’s popularity declined in the early 1960s, along with other female-focused comic book genres, she is not as well known as Archie, Sabrina, or Josie. After a short-lived revival in the 1980s (spearheaded by fans of her 1950s exploits), she disappeared once again into Archie trivia.The television series re-imagines her as a would-be fashion designer who has a major talent as a personal shopper at Lacy’s. Seemingly mentored by department head Gloria Grandbilt (Katherine LaNasa) – who reminds us of Sabrina’s Aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto) a great deal – Katy appears to be caught between these two aspects of her chosen industry, much as her comic book counterpart vacillated between three facets of the entertainment industry. At times, she has a Veronica Lodge energy to her, so it’s not a huge surprise she’s the de facto leader of her group of friends, but we wonder how she and V really got along all those years ago.The Poppy Dialogue Remains(Photo by Peter Kramer/The CW)Like Riverdale and Sabrina, the fast, poppy dialogue remains a fixture, but with its references to Broadway, legendary recording studios, and fashion labels, viewers more aligned with the other shows’ reliance on film history and the macabre may find themselves missing some of the jokes. Nevertheless, Aguirre-Sacasa’s constant voice means fans of Riverdale and Sabrina will just pick up new knowledge bases as the series progresses.It s Also A Josie And The Pussycats Show(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)While Valerie and Melody are nowhere to be seen so far – and have been missing from Josie’s life since sophomore year of high school – Katy Keene features a lot of ideas from the Josie comic book and animated series. Pepper Smith, her original best friend in the comics, is one of Katy Keene’s four principal characters. Played by Julia Chan, she’s been re-imagined as a new media hustler with something of a shady past. Alexandra Cabot (Camille Hyde), complete with a white stripe in her hair, emerges as Josie’s first real antagonist on the series. Alexander Cabot (Lucien Laviscount) appears as a possible romantic interest for Ms. McCoy with a more idealistic vision for a record company than his comic book counterpart s scheming for success and Josie’s affections. Nevertheless, Josie’s encounters with the Cabot siblings ring familiar from the comics, and Alexander s interest in making Josie a star may lead to a reformed Pussycats at least, we hope it does. Other Josie supporting characters like Albert and Sock are still missing, but maybe they’ll pop up at some pint. Long time Josie love interest Alan M. Mayberry is reportedly set to appear on the show (in the form of actor James Maslow), so it is possible the entire Jose and the Pussycats cast will populate Katy Keene.But considering the traditional Katy Keene cast is pretty much limited to Gloria Grandbilt, her boyfriend K.O. Kelly (played on the show by Zane Holtz) and Katy’s sister (who has seemingly been erased for the TV show), the Josie group is a worthwhile set of characters to import into Katy’s orbit. Well, that’s presuming she’ll be an active participant in Josie s story.Riverdale-Style Musical Numbers Abound(Photo by Barbara Nitke/The CW)Riverdale likes its music. Whether it be Kevin Keller’s (Casey Cott) annual school production or the entertainment Veronica programs at La Bonne Nuit, the show has relied on both reality-breaking musical numbers and more diagetic performances designed to showcase the chops of its cast.But even with the excuse of the speakeasy and Kevin’s love of musical theater, Riverdale is somewhat limited in the amount of singing it can credibly feature; keeping such scenes down to one every few episodes.Katy Keene takes it to a whole new level, with several musical interludes per episode. Some may just feature a single person playing piano and singing, while others take to the stage at Molly’s Crisis – the favorite spot of Katy’s circle – but it’s a definite uptick from the amount of singing one might find on Riverdale.This is by design, of course. Initial descriptions of the series noted its intention to be a “musical dramedy.” And while it may not feature as much choreography as an episode of Glee or even the level of production one might see at La Bonne Nuit, Katy Keene is very much about its cast singing.There Are Theatrical Struggles(Photo by David Giesbrecht/The CW)Of course, it can’t all be magical nights filled with song on Katy Keene. Drama still must occur. And in lieu of murder or witchcraft, Katy Keene’s dramatic hooks come from the characters trying to make it while maintaining their romantic notions about life. And though the show is trying to play this material in a more whimsical way – particularly with Katy’s story the struggles are there.Jorge Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp), in particular, has it tough as the program’s only character trying to make it on the Big White Way. Like so many before him, he wants to be a dancer in Broadway shows, but his seemingly fluid gender presentation and his drag act as “Ginger Lopez” may cause him any number of difficulties, to say nothing of the way the theater eats hopefuls of all stripes.Meanwhile, Pepper’s real story has yet to reveal itself. Early press materials suggested she has a secret business plan, but if it’s the one she expressed in the episodes we saw, it will lead her into some rough times in the very near future perhaps even the greatest struggle of her life.But the presence of these struggles will, hopefully, underscore the sense of magic Katy Keene wants to cultivate about New York and establishing oneself in their 20s. Sure, the show may only be paying lip service to things like rent or the rigors of finding a career in the entertainment field, but it is trying to be a hopeful show. At the same time, we wouldn’t be surprised if it makes some sort of pivot into darker material. It is a Riverdale adjacent show, after all.Katy Keene Season 1 premieres on Thursday, February 6 on The CW. Best-Reviewed Movie 2019: AustraliaThe best-reviewed Australian film of the year was also one of the most confronting titles released into theaters anywhere in 2019. The Nightingale, director Jennifer Kent’s follow-up to The Babadook, took an uncompromising look at sexual violence and the horrific treatment of Indigenous peoples in colonial Tasmania as it traced the story of a young Irish woman seeking revenge on the English soldier who killed her husband and son and left her for dead. 1. Hallelujah As anyone who has ever watched a televised talent competition will tell you, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has been subjected to its fair share of abuse over the years. Nowhere, though, has the song been more thoroughly beaten up than in this scene from Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, an otherwise fascinating superhero flick that has its hardcore defenders. What was a powerful moment in the graphic novel is laughable here, as Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) trade grunty-faces in their steampunk binoculars-looking sex pod all while the booming voice of Cohen… booms. Just when you think it can’t get any worse, the pod shoots flames at the moment of climax. Disagree, passionately? They look even better for theaters and the industry. The only people probably looking at the numbers with some grief are the folks at Paramount, which recently pushed both Jackass Forever and Top Gun: Maverick off this year’s schedule into 2022. That could still turn out to be a good idea and ultimately be looked back upon as just a slight delay for some bigger grosses, assuming the pandemic numbers head in the right direction again. But as the box office numbers have been showing for the past month now, people are still going to the movies – especially when there are no streaming options. But even more important for the industry is the extrapolation of these numbers, which are starting to feel more like pre-2020 instead of 2021. And not to bury the lede, but the box office just had its biggest Labor Day weekend ever. Not bad.King of the Crop: Shang-Chi Breaks Multiple Records, But Can It Be the first 2021 Movie to Hit 0 Million?Only four other times in history has the four-day Labor Day holiday grossed over 0 million, led by the likes of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Possession (two of those movies did not even debut in that weekend). The films in this Labor Day weekend s top 10 grossed over 1 million, besting the 4 million over the 2007 holiday which was led by Zombie s Halloween.Last week when we measured the success of Candyman, it was the Thursday-preview numbers that served as our guide. This week, we note that Shang-Chi had the second-best preview numbers during the pandemic, with .8 million. That is more than F9’s .1 million and less than Black Widow’s .2 million, which we should remember was made before the film hit Premier Access on Disney+ on Friday. Shang-Chi had no Premier Access on Friday, nor Saturday, Sunday, Monday, nor going forward.The seven past live-action PG-13 films which have grossed between .3 million and .3 million in Thursday previews include 2014’s Godzilla, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They averaged a three-day opening weekend of .5 million, with the second Fantastic Beasts film posting the weakest eventual three-day haul with .1 million. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings posted an estimate of .5 million over just the three days. That may be slightly below the average of those other films, which all had more recognizable name brands than Shang-Chi, but it is also the biggest Labor Day opening ever, the second-best opening of the pandemic, and the third-best September weekend ever behind both of the It films.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Those are also the only films to ever open in September and gross over 0 million. That is a number the box office has yet to crack since Bad Boys for Life did it before shutdown in 2020. Black Widow opened to million and could not do it – but it was also available for a price at home. F9 opened to million and came up shy of 5 million, despite being a theatrical exclusive. Only five films have ever grossed million or more in their first five days and failed to gross 0 million: Fifty Shades of Grey, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Simpsons Movie, and The Day After Tomorrow are four of them; the fifth is this summer’s Black Widow (i.e. pandemic + home availability = some will avoid the risk).Shang-Chi has very little competition over the next few weeks before Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases in its new just-announced date – Sony was clearly encouraged by this weekend s numbers – and No Time To Die comes out. Add Monday’s holiday to the total and Shang-Chi is estimated to have a gross around million over the four days, very much in line with the pre-pandemic average based on its Thursday numbers. What a difference a day makes! If we can begin to measure some metrics by films just being a day or so off their pre-2019 theatrical exclusive wavelengths, we may be making some progress. Especially if we can all just stay safe out there.The Top Ten And Beyond: Candyman Holds Strong As Free Guy Sets Sights on Passing Jungle Cruise(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Shang-Chi could not deliver the best Labor Day weekend ever all by itself. The continuing success of Free Guy can not be overlooked as it made another .9 million over the weekend and .4 million total over the holiday, bringing its total to .5 million in 25 days. That is over half a million more than what Jungle Cruise had in 26 days (.97 million). Cruise, which has been available on Disney+’s Premier Access, still has a strong presence in the top 5 in its sixth weekend of release and has driven its theatrical total to 6.7 million. Free Guy, without any streaming options until the end of the month, is now likely to surpass Jungle’s numbers and possibly get as high as 0 million. Free Guy’s three-day weekend also ranks 16th all-time amongst fourth weekends for August releases – higher than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Straight Outta Compton, Rush Hour 3, and Lee Daniels The Butler. It has made 9 million worldwide to date. Jungle Cruise is at 9 million.Candyman contributed even more money to the pot this weekend, making .4 million for a 53% drop from last weekend – better than The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’s 57% fall from a .1 million start and Old’s 59.3% fall from .8 million. With an increase to .3 million through the holiday, Candyman’s .7 million in 11 days is less than a million behind the pace of HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad, which made .6 million in 10 days. Remember that James Gunn’s day-and-date streaming film fell 71.5% down to .4 million in its second weekend. Candyman is now poised to surpass that film’s total and settle in with around million- million.Paw Patrol: The Movie, which Paramount sacrificed into theaters so Clifford the Big Red Dog could live on someday, grossed .1 million this weekend and an estimated .3 million over the holiday. No family film released in the second half of August has ever grossed million, let alone one streaming at the same time. Paw Patrol finds itself with .5 million after 17 days, which is better than The Angry Birds Movie 2 was doing in the same period in 2019 with a .94 million third weekend and .79 million. It went on to gross .66 million. Expect Paw Patrol to end up in that vicinity – lower than most family films gone hybrid this year, but potentially still higher than Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2, which was exclusive to theaters.On The Vine: James Wan s Original Horror Film, Malignant, a Venice Favorite, and MoreJames Wan’s Malignant may be the closest thing to challenge Shang-Chi’s number 1 slot (but that is still further away than Jim Carrey’s shot at Lauren Holly in Dumb and Dumber). The horror film will also be streaming on HBO Max starting Friday. In more exclusive news, STXFilms is putting the Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste crime comedy, Queenpins, into select Cinemark theaters, just their second during the pandemic after this February’s The Mauritanian. Then Focus will be releasing Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, which debuted to great critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival this past week. As we enter the month that celebrates romance, Black history, and American presidents, the movie slate doesn t look like it s going to set the world on fire, but there s still a few notable titles to consider. We ve got the latest DC Comics movie, for starters, and a Cannes Film Festival winner, a video game-based adventure, a children s movie based on a classic novel, and a horror remake. But what did RT users and our fans on social media vote to the top of the list? See below for the most anticipated movies opening in February.1. This movie racked up the most Want-to-See votes by far and rocketed to the top of all of our social polls as the most anticipated film of the month, and early word on social media has been overwhelmingly positive. We ll see if the film retains that heat when it opens the first week of February.2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) 63%1,650 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fansOpens February 14Remember when the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog premiered and the internet did a collective spit-take at the inexplicably malformed character design? Remember when the studio then backtracked and redesigned Sonic to match the original character more closely? Whether or not it was all a clever marketing ploy (all press is good press, right?) to convince nostalgic moviegoers that the people behind the film were on their side, it s resulted in a fairly healthy anticipation for the film, which finds the blue speedster an alien from another planet teaming up with his newfound human bestie (James Marsden) to take on a gleefully unhinged Jim Carrey in the form of the original game s classic nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. This one also unanimously took second place in all of our social polls and earned the second-most Want-to-See votes on RT.3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) 98%1,252 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Twitter fans, #4 pick by our Facebook fans, #5 pick by our Instagram fansOpens February 14Sure, the top two vote-getters in February are broadly marketed Hollywood fare, but if there was any doubt that RT users are a diverse group who flock to all sorts of films, this should help alleviate some of it. Earning a spot in the top five in all of our social polls, as well as the third-most Want-to-See votes, is this French romantic drama from celebrated director Céline Sciamma that took home both the Queer Palm and the award for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival last year. The story follows an artist who is hired to secretly paint the portrait of a reluctant bride-to-be; as the two spend more time together, a growing attraction becomes apparent and threatens to upend both their lives.4. The Invisible Man (2020) 91%1,009 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fans, #4 pick by our Twitter fansOpens February 28H.G. Wells seminal science-fiction novel has been adapted or borrowed from on several occasions since its publication in 1897, most notably in 1933 as part of Universal Pictures stable of monster movies. Now, with the studio s desire to update their classic horror pictures (formerly as part of a Dark Universe ), we re getting a new version starring Elisabeth Moss as a woman who may or may not be imagining the unseen presence of her abusive ex, a brilliant scientist who apparently committed suicide but might have actually discovered a way to turn himself invisible instead. Encouraged by a fairly effective trailer, initially skeptical moviegoers have turned the corner to cautious optimism, making the film February s fourth-most anticipated title.5. The Call of the Wild (2020) 62%1,116 Want-to-See Votes#4 pick by our Instagram fans, #5 pick by our Facebook fansOpens February 21Speaking of celebrated literature brought to the big screen, our last entry on the list adapts a Jack London masterpiece with the help of modern technology. While previous iterations of The Call of the Wild were content to work with live St. Bernards, this film stars a computer-animated Buck alongside Harrison Ford as John Thornton, who encounters the canine hero after he s been dognapped from his domestic life in California and sold as a beast of labor in the Alaskan Yukon. bt, Universal and Blumhouse are now trying to figure out how to make a sequel work, while other studios and production companies are pushing slashers into development, including LeBron James’s Springhill Entertainment, which is reportedly moving forward with a Friday the 13th remake.The Movies Mourn Stan LeeThe comic-book legend died in November, at age 95, and rather than mourn, fans and those who worked with Lee were quick to celebrate the incredible career of the man who created or co-created the X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and more. Lee’s death made his short appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, one of his final cameos, incredibly moving. Speaking of The World Enters the Spider-Verse and Never Wants to LeavePhil Lord and Chris Miller might have left Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie to make (and then not make) Solo: A Star Wars Story, but their fingerprints are all over this thing. Jam-packed with psychedelic visuals, left-field pop-culture references, inventive action set-pieces, and infused with just as much heart as Raimi’s Spidey flicks, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has been hailed by many as the best cinematic take on the character ever, and a game-changer for comic-book movies. It’s definitely done enough to have the folks at Pixar worried about their chances of winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar (though the Incredibles 2 was a blast, as well). After a strong box office opening, and a Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 97%, Sony has already greenlit a sequel and a spinoff, which will focus on Gwen Stacy and other female Spider-Folk.Paddington 2 Holds Onto 100% (along with some others)The British bear sequel is still at 100% on the Tomatometer, almost a year since it was released – but it’s not the only one. Debra Granik’s incredible Leave No Trace, starring Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie as a father-daughter duo attempting to live off the map, also maintains a perfect score, along with Carla Simón’s Summer 1993, skate documentary Minding the Gap, Oh Lucy!, Shirkers, and Night Comes On.Think we missed some of the biggest stories? Debbie DayFALL 2020 TV SURVEY: 30 MOST ANTICIPATED NEW SHOWSFor Rotten Tomatoes’ annual Fall TV Survey, we asked 1,000 of our users what they’re most looking forward to in the coming TV season and to reflect on the best shows from seasons past.When film and television production shut down in March, it threw a wrench into the TV production schedule for the rest of the year. Sadly, plenty of series that were initially supposed to premiere in 2020 are now being pushed to 2021 (and potentially beyond). So, while Rotten Tomatoes users were most pumped about the first Disney+ MCU series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it looks as though they re going to have to wait a little longer for the Anthony Mackie–Sebastian Stan vehicle.But there s still plenty of great television hitting the small screen this year: The No. 1 new show that Rotten Tomatoes users are most looking forward to seeing is The Stand, CBS All Access take on the post-apocalyptic Stephen King story that premieres later this year. In second is The Haunting of Bly Manor, the follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House from the same creative team (and much of the same cast).The gender splits were pretty even, with men and women anticipating each of the titles in pretty similar amounts, though more women are excited for the latest Ryan Murphy–Sarah Paulson collaboration, Netflix s Ratched (inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest), and more men are looking forward to Hulu s remake of the beloved animated series Animaniacs.Disagree with the survey results?
