She also played teen Maleficent in the 2014 live-action Disney film that starred Angelina Jolie as the titular Sleeping Beauty villain.The actress is all grown up now and starring as Tess, a 22-year-old who tackles the competitive New York City restaurant scene, in Starz drama Sweetbitter. At the end of the first season, Tess got her coveted job in Howard’s (Paul Sparks) restaurant, which was only the beginning of the drama for Purnell s character.In the season 2 premiere, Howard takes his staff to a farm to see where the food they prepare comes. It seems to affect Tess deeply, and she starts calling some of the chefs out on their cavalier attitude toward their ingredients. There also might be a bright spot in her relationship with Simone (Caitlin FitzGerald) — but how long can it last?When Rotten Tomatoes caught up with Purnell, she told us of her love for Phoebe Waller-Bridge s work and what s in store for her character in season 2.WHAT’S ON YOUR DVR?(Photo by BBC America)I don’t generally watch that much live TV because I’m always in different time zones and traveling around so much. I can tell you which TV shows I watch every single night religiously when I binge-watch them.My first one has to be Killing Eve, because it’s incredible. I’m obsessed with it. I’m obsessed with Jodie Comer. I’m obsessed with Sandra Oh. I’m really fascinated by shows with female leads, written by females. I know season 1 was Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I don’t think she did the second season, but I still really like the second season. I’ll be intrigued to see where they go after this. I actually first heard about Killing Eve when I was doing press for Sweetbitter because everybody kept comparing Tess and Simone to Villanelle and Eve. That’s how I got into it and they are pretty similar. I love the way that relationship is built.WHAT’S ON YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)Fleabag. I love it. It’s too short though. I need more than six episodes, because it’s so addictive. I think I binge-watched the whole first season in one night. It’s so brilliant. The humor is amazing, and it’s interesting once you know that Phoebe is involved in both [Fleabag and Killing Eve]. You can absolutely recognize her writing style and the way she brings characters to life. It’s super unique and so smart. She’s brilliant.There is a show that I can’t stop watching. It’s called Easy. I think that show’s been on for a while, but it just hit Netflix, so I’ve only just kind of discovered it. It’s set in Chicago, and each episode is like an anthology series. It starts off as an anthology series, but I think halfway through season 1 you get to meet the characters from episode one again later. Then by season 2 and season 3, you’re following the same four or five story lines except for then they add new story lines every other episode. Each one is different, but it kind of all centers around relationships, friendships, marriages, couples, all sexualities, all genders. It’s so interesting, all ages. Evan Jonigkeit, who plays Will in Sweetbitter, is on Easy. I was watching the show and I was like, Oh, that’s Evan. And I texted him, “I love your show.” I think it’s all mostly improv and the guys that do it are just like friends who get together and make this thing. It’s such a cool concept, I love it.My last one is Black Mirror. I am always obsessed with Black Mirror. I will watch it. I watched it last night. I rewatch episodes, and every time I rewatch an episode, I learn something new. I’m obsessed with Black Mirror.And Mrs. Maisel — I have to say that.That’s my top five.WHAT’S COMING SOON THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR?(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)Oh, I haven’t seen Big Little Lies yet. I loved the first season and I love Meryl Streep, so I would say Big Little Lies season 2. The Crown season 3 and 4, I think, have finished filming already. Maybe they haven’t finished yet, but  Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham-Carter are two of my top five favorite actresses, so I cannot wait to watch that. I think it’s pretty symbolic of them switching it up. It’s a way of Howard switching things up in the restaurant industry, making everyone aware that sh ’s about to change. But for Tess, it’s also like, Hey, don’t think that just because you’ve got the job that you’re done. That happening wakes her up, I think, from any idea of complacency. Also her reaction to it surprises herself; her curiosity and interest in it reminds her not to underestimate herself and it reminds her that there’s so much stuff she hasn’t seen, so much stuff she hasn’t experienced.It seems to change her attitude in the kitchen. Will that continue?Oh, definitely. Absolutely, yeah. In part, it’s having a better understanding and appreciation for dining as a whole experience, but also the intensity behind it. I think it’s a good reminder to Tessa, like it’s a job. This is kind of each man for himself out there, and I think that becomes apparent in the last scene of the season with a scene between Tess and Howard. She does something really ballsy, really ballsy. And it’s really interesting. I’m really interested to see what people make of that last scene. It’s dramatic.(Photo by Starz)Does Tess and Simone’s relationship become more harmonious?Yeah, I would say so. Well, no, actually. For like a brief second. Episode two they have an incredible bonding experience. You find out a bit more about Tess’s backstory and Tess’s mother and perhaps get an inkling as to why she’s so attracted to Simone, what their relationship is about. I don’t really know. It’s painful. I’m really interested in the relationship. I’m really interested in female relationships in general. I think she’s just as in love with Simone as she is with Jake, so she’s hypersensitive to any changed or nuances in their relationship. I think it’s really painful for Tess.Does Tess’ journey in the restaurant industry have any parallels to yours as an actor?Definitely. I always think it’s so funny how art imitates life in a weird way. Definitely last year was so funny because it was my first time in New York. It was my first time doing TV. So everything she was doing, everything she was experiencing, I was experiencing too for the first time. I’d never worked in this industry, and I was thrown into this new industry. What I mean by that is movies and TV, American television is totally different from anything I’ve ever done, so I was thrown into this thing that I was trying to figure out and keep up with and look like I knew what I was doing in the same way that Tess is. And then the gratification it gives you when you seize life for all its worth is incredible. I moved to New York after we finished filming, and I feel like it’s changed my life, not in a cheesy corny way, but genuinely changed the course of my life.Sweetbitter new episodes air Sundays on Starz. What makes the film truly special is how it balances the supernatural horrors of a haunted house movie with a poignant and equally devastating immigration story of survivor’s guilt. As Benjamin Lee wrote for The Guardian, “The haunting that takes place is one that’s tied to something that feels real.” Netflix will release His House some time later this year, and once it does, you can expect a movie that will make audiences scream, all while getting people to empathize with a refugee couple’s story by way of a haunted apartment,” as RogerEbert.com’s Nick Allen puts it.Save Yourselves! But what happens if we try to distance ourselves from the internet for a short time? According to Save Yourselves!, you may miss an alien invasion. Su (Sunita Mani) and Jack (John Paul Reynolds) are a hip Millennial couple, ruled by the technology at their disposal. When Su suggests they get away without technology in order to cleanse themselves during a life-reaffirming week, they find themselves having to fight off adorable poof-like aliens that remind us of a cuter version of Critters, as the rest of the world is already under attack. Rachel Wagner from Rachel Reviews writes that the film “is not only a very funny look at modern Millennial life but a sweet romance of a couple who become stronger through facing off with aliens.” Save Yourselves! is currently looking for distribution.Relic (2020) 92%(Photo by Jackson Finter courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDThe best horror often manages to be both a terrifying piece of entertainment and a poignant commentary on our reality. A remarkable debut by Natalie Erika James, Relic turns the haunted house story on its head, using the horror genre to tell an emotional story of dementia. Australian stage legend Robyn Nevin gives a terrifying yet emotionally devastating performance as a woman whose mind and body is slowly failing her, while a strange and eerie presence haunts her home. “Like Mike Flanagan before her”, writes Film School Rejects Rob Hunter, “Natalie Erika James flawlessly blends terrifying horror with the ache of humanity.” Rest assured, when Relic finally gets released, it will make you scream before it pulls on your heart strings.Run Sweetheart Run (2020) 73%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: BlumhouseRelease Date: TBDBlumhouse returns to Sundance with its second “Sweetheart”-titled movie in Run Sweetheart Run. Like last year’s Sweetheart, this movie finds a young woman having to go toe-to-toe with an inhuman monster, as we follow Ella Balinska’s Cherie on her first date in a while. The problem is that her date turns out less than stellar, and she is forced to run through the streets of Los Angeles for an entire night to escape the blood-loving monster she mistook for a chance at romance. Though critics note that the metaphors are thinly-veiled at best, Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro writes that “Run Sweetheart Run makes for an entertaining and cheeky trip centered around woman’s curse.”Bad Hair (2020) 62%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDA social thriller starring a killer weave, Bad Hair is a campy throwback to 80s horror B-movies with a whole lot on its mind. Writer-director Justin Simien returns to Sundance with a film about the importance of and controversy surrounding hair in the Black community, focusing on a lowly assistant at a TV show who gets a new hairstyle that helps her move up in her career – with some deadly, bloodthirsty consequences. Writing for That Shelf, Victor Stiff explains that the film “is a delightful horror dramedy that interrogates black women’s struggle to be true to themselves in the face of a system hellbent on snuffing out their blackness.” Bad Hair is looking for distribution.Possessor: Uncut (2020) 94%(Photo by Karim Hussain courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDPlaying like a horror version of Inception, Brandon Cronenberg (yes, son of David) takes us on a disturbing, bloody nightmare that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. The film stars Andrea Riseborough as a contract killer whose consciousness gets implanted into others so she can control them into committing murders for hire that is, until she finds herself struggling to control a particularly difficult body. This is a movie that’s not for the faint of heart, as Slashfilm’s Chris Evangelista writes: “This isn’t a work designed to thrill and entertain. Instead, it’s meticulously crafted to horrify. The violence on display here is graphic to the extreme, yet it never feels cartoonish.” While the violence and blood may be too much for some viewers, critics agree that this film is a unique experience worth seeing; as Rob Hunter writes for Film School Rejects, Possessor “is fantastically and cruelly unforgettable.” Keep an eye out for Possessor as it looks for distribution.Into the Deep (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDThe rare documentary to play at the midnight slot, this bone-chilling film started as an homage to Danish amateur inventor Peter Madsen before turning into an exploration of evil when Madsen murdered and dismembered Swedish journalist Kim Wall during the time the doc was being shot. Emma Sullivan’s Into the Deep features stunning footage both pre-murder and in its immediate aftermath, dealing with the shock of the filmmakers realizing what kind of subject they’re following as their film begins to resemble something akin to a horror flick. Writing for Vanyaland, Nick Johnston says, “Into the Deep is a unique beast in a documentary landscape that’s more consumed than ever with the true-crime genre, and it is a must-watch for anyone even slightly curious about the events of this bizarre and tragic crime.” Netflix will release Into the Deep later this year.The Night House (2020) 87%(Photo by Elisha Christian courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Searchlight PicturesRelease Date: TBDLike A Quiet Place in 2018, The Night House relies on sound to create a terrifying horror experience that will make your bones vibrate. After the loss of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) begins to spend her nights plagued by strange dreams and creepy noises around the house. Critics spoke highly of Hall’s performance, with Birth.Movies.Death’s Ed Travis calling her a “scream queen.” They also commended the string of jump scares that shook audiences at the fest; Bloody Disgusting s Meagan Navarro explains “[the film] leaves you breathless and your heart pumping hard.” Searchlight Pictures bought the distribution rights for the film and will be releasing at a later date.Scare Me (2020) 82%(Photo by Brendan Banks courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: ShudderRelease Date: TBDNo matter how elaborate or grand a horror movie is, the scariest memories most of us have still belong to the nights we spent as youngsters listening to scary stories after dark. Scare Me takes the tale of an aspiring horror screenwriter trapped in a snowy cabin with a best-selling horror novelist telling each other stories and turns it into an exploration of the creative process and even gender politics, all while delivering a minimalist yet still spooky experience. As Daily Dead’s Heather Wixson writes, “Scare Me is an absolute delight and a real gift for both horror fans as well as those of us who can’t get enough of hearing a good story. ” Shudder will release Scare Me at a later date.Spree (2020) 67%(Photo by Rylan Perry courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: RLJE FilmsRelease Date: TBDEugene Kotlyarenko’s Spree asks, What if Joker was a streamer and wannabe influencer? The thriller-comedy, which is shot found-footage style, features Joe Keery doing his best Arthur Fleck impersonation as a guy obsessed with becoming internet famous by streaming a night of violent mayhem. It s a commentary on our collective obsession with social media, privilege, and the darkness of comment sections. What makes the film more than just a Black Mirror episode is how it infuses jokes and gags into the horror – and then seems to ask why we re laughing. Nick Allen wrote for RogerEbert.com that “Spree brilliantly shows influencer culture for the totally demented lifestyle that it is.” RLJE Films will release Spree later this year.Like this? But there’s still nothing like the taste of an original, and with Peele at the helm, this Twilight Zone is in more than capable hands. Catch up on the original series then tune in to season 1 of this reboot, which streams on CBS All Access April 1. Why you should watch it: Is Jordan Peele taking over the world? Apparently — because he’s also got credits this month as the co-creator of this acclaimed comedy series on TBS. Starring a never-better Morgan and Girls Trip breakout-turned-bonafide star Tiffany Haddish as his estranged ex, there’s no reason why the very funny Last O.G. shouldn’t make your binge list this month. Season 2 premieres April 2 on TBS. Then one day, 10 years later, he decides to pick himself up, move to a small town, and get back to work calling games for the minor league Morristown Frackers.Why you should watch it: Six-time Emmy winner Azaria is perhaps best known for his voice work on The Simpsons, but it’s always a pleasure to watch him get to work in front of the camera. The laughs still land. To watch his growth through the titular Brockmire’s character arc in the first two seasons is simply great (and easily binge-able) comedic TV — and that’s not to mention the firecracker energy Amanda Peet brings as Azaria’s co-lead. Season 3 premieres April 3.Where to watch it: Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first two seasons)Cloak and Dagger 87% (Freeform)What it is: Marvel is at its best when highlighting young heroes who are in over their head while learning the gifts and limits to their newfound superpowers. Cloak Dagger comes with the twist that Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson’s powers — emitting light and engulfing in darkness, respectively — are the yin to the other s yang, inexplicably connected and best when joined together. Their vastly different backgrounds make them unlikely partners, as do their growing feelings for one another. Why you should watch it: The chemistry between leads Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) is the kind of urgent magnetism you can’t look away from — which makes a season 1 binge of this teen-oriented action-drama series go down easy. Why you should watch it: The Tick finds the perfect blend between superheroic, shoot-’em-up action and silly camp and comedy. While the series’ namesake city has become a talking point of good and bad on Capitol Hill, it offers a timely look at some of the social and justice issues being debated in that spotlight today while still being nuanced, character-driven entertainment. Luckily, Cobra Kai, from creator Robert Mark Kamen, has it in spades. Too often, they re not great, but sometimes they re good and they just don t fit. It s hard to do; it s hard to write a great screenplay. As I started reading, I was drawn into it. I didn t know where it was going or where it was going to go. It got worse and worse in the best sense. There was a dread that started to happen, and there was an authenticness about it. A love story was emerging even against this kind of journey that was happening. These two people who had history together,who loved each other, and you saw them completely not together, so to speak, but what kept them together was love. We have a beautiful screenplay and really that s what got me to say yes.Speaking of that central relationship, how did you and Diane Lane create that rapport?Costner: The idea of working with Diane, that s always going to be a yes, but not in the wrong situation. When I work with her or anybody, I want it to succeed wildly. I want it to feel to an audience that, “Wow, that was fresh. That was different. I didn t see that coming.” You still want to feel like something surprised you. That s what I look forward to. They re not just jobs or decisions to be a way from home. How did you decide what went into that performance and balance the relationship dynamics?Women that have strong wills are not new to this century or this decade. Women have been leading men in certain ways to places because they feel morally, ethically, right, and drag their men sometimes in these situations that are over their head. Why does the man go? Because in the end, he loves her and wants to protect her from herself. And in the end, he can t.Speaking of strong women, your character also faces off against Lesley Manville’s strong-willed matriarch. What was that experience like?She’s kind of like Bette Davis, just so formidable. That family you just knew was so bad. They were just people on the fringe and we [the characters] got dragged into it. I think what s so cool about the movie is I could feel it coming. The audience could feel it coming. The only one that couldn t feel it coming was Diane, my wife. How did you bring that sense of mid-century midwestern life into your performance?Costner: The actor has a few tools at their disposal. Their voice, how are they going to play it? Their walk, how are they gonna walk it? Their hair, how are they going to look? How are they going to exist in that particular era? What s going to inform without shouting out.The West and Midwest feature so prominently throughout your career. Is there something about these regions that appeals to you? Costner: Maybe you ll think about it this way or won t, but how I do is that they lend themselves to people having to solve their problems on their own. As people extended out, they ended up solving their own problems with a level of violence. The violence was random, and those who could take advantage of people did. Some people find a lot of drama in the courtroom and a lot of drama in the police precinct, and I find a lot of drama in the great open spaces where sometimes it s you and somebody else and you re wondering what it is they want from you. Between Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s melancholy chemistry, the singular force of confidently neurotic nature that is Sonoya Mizuno, and Justin Theroux and Sally Field s “special” parent–child relationships (truly something to behold), you feel for each character you meet. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode.Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and  will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried.Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo and director Paul Feig remember the notorious food-poisoning scene and the fantasy sequence from the original script that it replaced. VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLTHE MOVIE: Bridesmaids (2011) 90%Few comedies have rocked the movie industry like Bridesmaids did back in 2011. From the first draft of the script to a South by Southwest debut that had Hollywood talking, to a mega opening weekend and multiple Oscar nominations, this was always going to be a special comedy for the beginning of the new decade. But what makes the story of out-of-luck bridesmaid Annie (Kristen Wiig) stand out from so many other buzzy and celebrated comedies is that its impact has lasted, and continues to this day – not just in the career boosts it gave its leads and director, but in the way it changed the playing field for female-driven comedies and the creative minds who wanted to make them. It all started, according to co-writer Annie Mumolo, with an exciting meeting with a Hollywood producer… that never ended up happening, and her own experience as a “perpetual bridesmaid.”“That planted the seed for us. We thought, ‘Oh, maybe we should write something together.’ Annie Mumolo:  Kristen [Wiig] and I had been writing and performing together at the Groundlings for years. We had an instant sort of chemistry there and we just had a lot of success with our sketches that we wrote together. So at one point a Hollywood producer approached us after a show and said, ‘You guys, you two have really good chemistry. I d love to have a meeting with you.’ At the same time, we had been talking about ‘maybe we should think of writing a movie sometime.’ And when he approached us we were very excited, [and] we exchanged information. Then we called him and he never called us back. That was it – I don t know. A bizarre thing. But it kind of planted the seed for us. All my cousins and friends. And I was a perpetual bridesmaid.”Mumolo: At the same time, everyone I knew was getting married. All my cousins and friends. And I was a perpetual bridesmaid. I was encountering all kinds of characters in my adventures. So we started talking about that idea and that was where it started. One moment that I think the whole emotional anchor of the movie came from was a moment [at my friend’s] wedding reception. You know how there s that big dramatic run out of the building, and they get into their car and drive away? And everyone s celebrating? I remember my last friend that got married, and the feeling I had as they ran out, got into their car – it was this very deep feeling of being left behind. I just remember standing there. You re very happy for them, and you want this to be happening to them, but you have this complicated sort of feeling. Because it makes you question, ‘Am I doing what I should be doing?’ “Within five minutes I got a call from Judd saying, ‘Alright we re going to do this.’”Paul Feig:  It was in 2007, I was working on another movie and Judd [Apatow, who produced Bridesmaids] called me up and said, ‘Hey, we re doing a reading of this script that Kristen Wiig wrote.’ Kristen had just been in a movie I did called Unaccompanied Minors, and it was the first time she had ever been in a movie and I just loved her. I thought she was so funny, so I went to that script read. (One of the ironies is that Melissa McCarthy was one of the people reading, but she was reading other roles; she wasn t even reading that role.) I d always been wanting to do much more female-led comedy and projects in general, so after the read we all gave Kristen and Annie a bunch of notes and all that. Then I was busy with my movie, and then I would check in with Judd about that one occasionally, and he was, ‘Oh we re not sure what s going on yet,’ and then a year-and-a-half later he basically said, ‘It looks like it’s dead.’ [I said] ‘That s such a bummer because it was such a great chance to have all these great women [in a film together].’ Then it was 2010 when I got a call from my agent saying that that movie was actually going to go. They put me on list of possible directors to Judd and within five minutes I got a call from him saying, ‘Alright we re going to do this.’ Paul Feig and Kristen Wiig on the set (Photo by Suzanne Hanover/ ©Universal Pictures)“I believed so strongly from the beginning there was an audience for this. I just knew it.”Mumolo: All women that I know are very, very funny in their own way. And we really wanted to tap into that. I believed so strongly from the beginning there was an audience for this. I just knew it. And so did Judd. I remember there was an article I found, like in Entertainment Weekly or something, at some point, that said women make up to 60% of the moviegoing audience and yet there were no movies [being made for them]. This was back then; there were not a lot of movies that featured women. The women always in comedy tend to be sort of just an accessory: The wife holding a tray of lemonade, and [saying], ‘Honey, you re not going to go be crazy again are you? Uh-oh. The sort of baking, no-opinion woman who just stands there and holds lemonade. Or is always just watching her crazy, funny male partner have all the fun and be funny. But that was because you write what you know. And when men are writing movies, they write what they know. So we really just wrote what we knew. We didn t set out to make any grand statements or anything. We just felt like this should be done. So we did it. THE MOMENT: Food Poisoning Strikes at the Bridal StoreFeig recalls clearly the gory details of Bridesmaids’s most infamous scene – in which, after eating at a Brazilian restaurant chosen by Annie in an effort to upstage her rival Helen (Rose Byrne), the bride and her bridesmaids are struck down by food poisoning and proceed to s—t and vomit all over the bathroom of an upscale bridal store (and in one case, on the street outside). The filmmakers designed a pristine white set on which to stage the carnage, and made buckets of vomit from oatmeal, chopped peas, carrots, and other vegetables for maximum gross-out effect. It was to be the movie’s big “water cooler” moment, and it was one that was both hilarious and groundbreaking – these were comic actresses going for it in the kind of scene only men had been allowed to play in the past. But it was a somewhat controversial sequence behind the scenes: the dress-shop moment played out very differently in Wiig and Mumolo’s original script – no oatmeal was required – and the two writers were not eager to change directions. At least at first.“Naturally she sees Christian Bale there, who’s chopping wood without a shirt on…”Mumolo: We had a fantasy sequence where they go into the dress shop, and Kristen s character tries on this dress and she has this fantasy that when she wears this dress, she s all of a sudden in a castle. And all the men at the wedding are fawning over her. There s so many of them wanting her so badly [that] just to escape from the castle she goes running out into this field and runs into the forest. And she naturally sees Christian Bale there, who’s chopping wood without a shirt on. And they end up on a bearskin rug, and he was combing her hair, and it was this expansive sequence of her little love affair with Christian Bale. In the meantime, [back in the real world] Helen gets the women to get the dress she wants because Annie is caught up in her fantasy. So that was the original [scene]. And then I think Judd said at one point we ll never get Christian Bale to do this. And then we tried to put in Matt Damon and then we re like, As if we re going to get Matt Damon to do this.’ He was concerned we weren t going to get anybody to do it. And also he felt it needed harder comedy there, rather than what we had. So, we sadly let that go. We did not want to let that go. We loved that sequence. It just came from a lot of talk about, ‘Well, what is her problem?’ Her problem is she doesn t have any money but she s trying to keep up with Helen and trying to look like she can outdo or match Helen and all these opulent things that Helen is doing for Lillian [played by Maya Rudolph]. And it just became, ‘Well what if she overextends herself and takes them to a restaurant that s cheap but she passes it off as being a great place?’ Mumolo:  I think what Judd said was, ‘This sequence doesn t have enough hard comedy.’ It was a Friday night, and we had until Monday. He said, ‘Go write something that ends with they all get food poisoning and Megan s ts in the sink.’ I think [that] is what he said. Of course, when you hear something that way … it’s not going to sit well in the beginning. We went off and did our version. We had to sort of bring the female perspective into how a woman would deal with having food poisoning and trying to cover it up. On the day we started shooting it, while we were shooting it, we started feeling much more at peace with it. We both felt much more relieved, seeing how Paul handled it and seeing his approach to it. And Judd said we re going to shoot many versions of this, from the most conservative to the most – what s the word – the most extreme. “The funniest thing was just how everybody handles it up until the point when it all falls apart.”Feig:  I know when that idea was come up with, Kristen was kind of like, ‘Wait what? What s going to happen?’ Because – very rightfully so – she was nervous that Judd and I, two guys who come from the  rough and tumble world of comedy, were going to turn it into a guy s version of a woman s movie. And that s a very, very real concern. But we always just told her… this is the emotional reason why this is here and so this will illustrate this point in a very funny way and also in a way that will showcase her comedy. We wanted a big, physical water cooler scene set piece, as they call it in comedy, that could be super funny and active and really get some attention. But also none of us wanted to do a scene which is just going to be mayhem for mayhem s sake. To us the funniest thing was just how everybody handles it up until the point when it all falls apart. Will [Annie] admit to her enemy that she did something wrong? And so that s really what that scene s about. It could ve easily just been, oh everybody s throwing up and s tting and all of that, and shot at crazy wide angle lenses and just going far, far, far. But it just wouldn t have been funny without being grounded by the fact that there s Annie in the middle of it as everything is falling apart around her and all the evidence points to the fact that she really screwed up badly and she just won t admit it. Wiig with Rose Byrne who played Helen (Photo by Suzanne Hanover/ ©Universal Pictures)“It took about eight or nine test screenings to get the exact math right.”Feig: We shot more sequences, too, where Becca [Ellie Kemper] runs in and finds everybody and the bathroom s full with everybody throwing up, [and] she goes running down the hall thinking there s another bathroom at the end and runs into Whitney – the woman who runs the dress shop – throws opens the door of her office thinking it s a bathroom and projectile vomits across this pristine, white office. And all over this wedding photo of Whitney and her husband. That was one of the first ones we cut out because when we put the sequence together, we re like OK, that s just a bridge too far. At that, we re just settling, just letting the grossness drive us and not the emotional underpinning. But honestly it took about eight or nine test screenings to get the exact math right on that dress shop sequence, because there was some we let go a little too long and others we made too short. It was really having to discover how far we could push the audience without them turning on us. We found we could actually push them pretty far. THE IMPACT: Turning on the Green lightBridesmaids earned 8 million at the global box office and picked up two Oscar nominations: one for Melissa McCarthy for her star-making turn as Megan, and one for co-writers Mumolo and Wiig for Best Original Screenplay. Those numbers and accolades are rarely seen for R-rated comedies – particularly those with scenes that require so much oatmeal. But it’s those numbers that shook the industry. With Bridesmaids proving false the long-held assumption that female-led comedies couldn’t make money, there was a shift. Blockers, Girls’ Trip, Rough Night, Pitch Perfect, Spy, The Heat, and more films would follow; movies where strong friendships took center stage and romance was absent or secondary, movies where women could be flawed, and real, and funny. Many would say the shift hasn’t been big enough, but Bridesmaids showed many in power what Mumolo had known all along: there was an audience for this movie and more like it. We jumped in the car and drove to the ArcLight in Hollywood and found a packed theater just absolutely rocking with laughter.”Feig: Our budget was .5 million and we were told we had to make million opening weekend or else we d be considered a failure. We were tracking to make million and so I was walking around that week just despondent. It was only [better] as the matinees went on [opening] Friday, when the calls starting coming in like, ‘Well it s actually looking more like 15’ and then, ‘Oh well maybe it might be 17.’ I invited Melissa and her husband Ben [Falcone] over to our house for dinner. Stephen King was rather famously unhappy with Stanley Kubrick s adaptation of his novel The Shining, even if the film went on to be a bona fide classic, beloved by millions of fans who mythologized and analyzed it endlessly. So even with a new novel from King to work with as source material, it was always going to be a daunting task for director Mike Flanagan to adapt Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining, for the big screen almost four decades later. But Flanagan may have proven to be the best choice for the job he s a huge Stephen King fan and even wrote one of his own acclaimed horror films (Hush) at the Stanley Hotel, where King was inspired to write The Shining. The end result, according to reviews, is a faithful translation from page to screen if different from its predecessor   that does a decent job balancing its genre thrills with its more contemplative themes. Ewan McGregor stars in Doctor Sleep as a grown-up Danny Torrance, who offers his help to a teenage girl (Kyliegh Curran) with the same extrasensory shine that he possesses. She s on the run from a nefarious cult known as The True Knot, who seek out others like her and Danny to feed on their special abilities. Critics say the film has its flaws it plays at times like mere Shining fan service and seems to feel the need to offer too-tidy solutions but manages to feel both like it s a part of Kubrick s vision and a unique beast all its own, with great performances (Rebecca Ferguson in particular, ahem, shines as the villain) and poignant themes that help bring an element of depth to the scares. It s probably not going to go down as a horror classic, but it s more than serviceable as an addition to the still-growing list of Stephen King adaptations.

亚博游戏网站 Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering stories from the last few weeks (because of the holidays) for titles such as Final Destination, Ghostbusters 3, Disney s Hunchback, and Monopoly.This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM CRUISE S MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 COMING IN 2021 AND 2022(Photo by Chiabella James/Paramount Pictures)There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of those examples, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). This week we learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for releases in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. Paramount is aiming to achieve this goal by hiring writer/director Christopher McQuarrie to work on both sequels, following what he s done on the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%) and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to schedule not just Tom Cruise, but his supporting cast, which may include Fallout co-stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. We don t have any indication what Mission: Impossible 7 (2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (2022) might be about, but they will probably feature Tom Cruise doing some of his own crazy stunts. Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020), and he will also be celebrating his 60th birthday on July 3, 2022, possibly around the same time that Mission: Impossible 8 will be released.Fresh Developments1. AN ACTUAL GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS NOW FAST-TRACKED FOR SUMMER, 2020 (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)We ve been seeing year-after-year of reboots and remakes, but only very rarely are they overturned by later films. If you were a big fan of 2016 s Ghostbusters (Certified Fresh at 74%), we have some bad news for you, as Sony is now pulling an about-face. Rather than moving forward with a sequel starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony is aiming to produce a Ghostbusters 3 that will extend the continuity that started with the 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Ghostbusters 3 will be a legacy sequel, with Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) taking over from his father Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters 3 will reportedly feature the teenage kids of the original Ghostbusters, possibly comprised of two daughters and two sons. We even already got a teaser trailer this week for the sequel, which is aiming for a summer 2020 release. In related news, Bill Murray is now signed to reunite with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks, co-starring Rashida Jones.2. BLACK PANTHER S NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN KING GETTING A SEQUEL: COMING TO AMERICA 2The 1988 blockbuster comedy hit Coming to America was #3 at the box office that year, preceding by three decades the success of another African king in last year s Black Panther. We already know Black Panther is getting a sequel, but now we can count on one for the former as well. Eddie Murphy is signed to return as Akeem Joffer of Zamunda for Coming to America 2, which will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle Flow, Black Snake Moan). Murphy and Brewer are coming off their recent collaboration on Netflix s upcoming Rudy Ray Moore biopic, Dolemite is My Name.3. HUNCHBACK (OF NOTRE DAME) GETTING LIVE-ACTION TREATMENTThere are absolutely no signs of Walt Disney Pictures slowing down their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films anytime soon (setting aside whether The Lion King is live action ). In addition to all of the films in development, the next five on Disney s upcoming slate are Dumbo (3/29/2019), Aladdin (5/24/2019), The Lion King (7/19/2019), Mulan (3/27/2020), and Maleficent II (5/29/2020). We can now add Hunchback, an adaptation of 1996 s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to the mix, as Josh Gad is now producing the remake for Disney. (Gad is a frequent Disney star, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen 2.) Gad is not currently expected to star, but that could change with time. Meanwhile, another project, Pinocchio apparently hit a snag over the holidays, with Paddington 2 director Paul King recently walking away (while Guillermo del Toro s Pinocchio is now in development at Netflix).4. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME TRAILER REVEALS MYSTERIO AND THE ELEMENTALS (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)An all-too-common complaint about trailers is that they reveal too much, with the best ones arguably just whetting our appetite without giving away the whole narrative. This summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) has a very thin line to walk indeed, as its mere existence could be a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019). Let s focus instead on what this trailer actually does show, which is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio fighting mysterious monsters called The Elementals. In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be acting as a superhero, but many fans were quick to point out that in his first appearance in 1964, Mysterio similarly pretended to be heroic, as he s traditionally one of Spider-Man s longest-running super villains. (Let s note here that 1964 is some 40 years before Syndrome did something similar in 2004 s The Incredibles.) As for the Elementals, three different Easter Eggs in the trailer seem to suggest that they could actually be Spider-Man s villains Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Sandman (or those could be fakeouts too).5. STEVEN SPIELBERG FINDS HIS WEST SIDE STORY REMAKE S MARIA, ANITA, BERNARDO, AND CHINO Steven Spielberg is getting closer to filming his remake of West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony, with the original film s Rita Moreno also cast in a supporting role. What we didn t know until this week, however, was who would be playing the film s female lead, Maria (played by Natalie Wood in 1961), or her best friend Anita (Moreno s original role). Those big reveals came this week as we learned that Maria will be played by 17-year-old Colombian-American newcomer Rachel Zegler. (You can watch Rachel Zegler performing various songs on her YouTube channel right here.) Anita will be played by Ariana DeBose, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for playing Donna Summer. Anita s boyfriend Bernardo will be played by David Alvarez (Tony winner for Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Maria s would-be-fiancee Chino will be played by Andrés Rivera (of the Hamilton national touring company). Spielberg also reportedly met recently with faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico about their concerns of how their community will be portrayed in this West Side Story update.6. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL LEAD THE WITCHES REMAKE Robert Zemeckis recent adaptation of the documentary Marwencol, called Welcome to Marwen (Rotten at 31%), was both critically panned and a box office bomb. For his next film, Zemeckis is aiming for a more conventionally popular project, with a remake of 1990 s The Witches, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl s 1983 children s novel. Anne Hathaway is now attached to star in The Witches as the Grand High Witch, the role played in 1990 by Anjelica Huston. The 1990 movie was itself a box office bomb, earning just million, but the film has arguably become a family favorite in the 29 years since. Robert Zemeckis new adaptation of Dahl s novel will be set in the Gothic South in the 1960s, with Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) also writing and producing along with both Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity).Rotten Ideas3. KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY  (Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart may not be hosting this year s Academy Awards, but his career is otherwise moving along quite nicely following the million opening weekend for The Upside. Within a few days of those numbers being confirmed, Kevin Hart was quickly attached to two different films, including one that s pretty high profile. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds like a drastic switch. Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board. If we disregard his two Kevin Hart concert movies, Tim Story currently has a seven-movie Rotten streak going that includes Fantastic Four (27%), the aforementioned Ride Along (19%), and Ride Along 2 (13%). Kevin Hart s second new project this week is called Fatherhood, based on the Matthew Logelin memoir Two Kisses for Maddy. Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers) will direct the tragic drama, in which Hart will play a newly single father after his high school sweetheart dies in childbirth.2. That may change this year with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but even if one of them does earn a Fresh score, it would only be a small dent in the genre s infamous reputation. In the grand Hollywood tradition of doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, we learned about another attempt to bring a video game to the big screen this week, namely the long-running Just Dance franchise. Screen Gems won an auction to the Just Dance rights after competitive bidding. In related news, Warner Bros long-in-development Minecraft movie attracted a new director this week in Peter Sollett, who directed Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist (Certified Fresh at 74%) and 2015 s Freeheld (Rotten at 48%).1. FINAL DESTINATION FRANCHISE BEING BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD (Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)The first Final Destination movie in 2000 earned just a 34% on the Tomatometer, but it inspired a franchise with four more sequels, only one of which scored above 48%. It can be argued that Final Destination, in which the survivors of lethal events are then haunted by death, trying to even the score, was somewhat ahead of its time, given the more recent success of franchises like Insidious and IT. The screenwriting team of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who worked on Saw IV, Saw V, and Saw VI, have now landed a new gig at New Line Cinema, working on rebooting the Final Destination franchise. Those Saw movies, likewise, have pretty Rotten Tomatometers (18%, 13%, and 39%).
