David Michôd and Joel Edgerton took on a bold task when they set out to adapt Shakespeare s so-called Henriad into a single feature film, and they knew that in order to make the transition a successful one, they would need to enlist the services of a talented group of actors. They found exactly what they were looking for in Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, Thomasin McKenzie, and Lily-Rose Depp, who helped bring the story of Henry V s ascent to the throne to vibrant life in The King. The film premiered in September at the Venice Film Festival, and while it s set to make its streaming debut on Netflix on November 1, it already saw a limited theatrical release on October 11, and critics have largely been on board with the new vision. Ahead of its Netflix premiere, Michôd, Edgerton, Chalamet, and Depp sat down with RT editor Jacqueline Coley to chat about The King, explaining how daunting it was to take something Shakespeare perfected and make it feel new, and how exhilarating it was for Chalamet to shoot his action sequences. They also talk about a few Rotten movies they love, and Edgerton describes what it s like as a filmmaker to get bad reviews.

Earlier in the week, already low-tracking numbers for the new crop of films suggested that this weekend might be a bad example to use in considering how the current international health crisis was affecting movie-going. That was before American acting treasure Tom Hanks announced that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus, theaters began restricting attendance to 50 percent capacity, and a series of high-profile cancellations (A Quiet Place Part II, Mulan, F9), including one recurring cancellation (The New Mutants), resulted in no new wide releases for the next three weeks in theaters, some of which are taking the next step of closing down. All of that culminated in the lowest box office total since the 1990s. The industry will certainly place asterisks on the box office results for this trying period.King of the Crop: Onward Soldiers ThroughPixar has only seen two second-weekend drops of more than 60 percent in their history for Cars 2 (-60.3 percent) and The Good Dinosaur. Due to decreased theatrical capacities and social-distancing, their latest film dropped a massive 73 percent. Onward still led the weekend’s box office with .5 million, but it has quickly dropped behind The Good Dinosaur’s pace (.3 million second weekend and .8 million after 10 days) to what, inevitably, will be the lowest-grossing film in the company’s 25-year history. The numbers could drop even further next week, making Onward just the fourth March release to have grossed million in its first 10 days to not make it to 0 million. The others being 10,000 B.C., Battle: Los Angeles, and 2017’s Power Rangers.Rotten Returns: Bloodshot Wasn’t the Franchise-Starter Hoped ForVin Diesel’s franchise-starting success appears to be on the wane. As a headliner, Diesel’s average film opening is .13 million. Remove his Fast Furious franchise movies from that group, and the average goes down to .15 million. Take away the Riddick and xXx films, and it drops to .46 million. Now remove The Pacifier and add this weekend’s Bloodshot to the list of The Last Witch Hunter, Babylon A.D., and A Man Apart and it falls to just .15 million. A Man Apart — with the lowest production budget of those films at million — was never a franchise play, but its opening of .01 million was higher than any of the other films, including Bloodshot, whose .3 million start is the weakest ever for a wide-release Diesel vehicle. The health crisis certainly did him no favors, but the film was only tracking around a million opening before this week’s escalation. Neither number is good for the million production, which has grossed a total of .6 million worldwide so far.The Top 10 and Beyond: Faith-Based I Still Believe Is Best of New ReleasesLooking at the top 10 in terms of success, Bad Boys for Life is the year’s most successful film to date, garnering around million in profit so far after grossing over 7 million worldwide. The Invisible Man and its million budget grossed another million in its third weekend, bringing its total to .4 million domestic and over 2 million worldwide. It has the second-best profit of 2020 right now. In sixth place this week, but third place for 2020, is Sonic the Hedgehog, as it passed 6 million worldwide. Lionsgate’s faith-based release, I Still Believe, from directors Andrew and Jon Erwin, did the best of the new releases this week with .5 million. Unfortunately, its budget is reportedly around twice that of I Can Only Imagine’s million, making a shot at profit now more unfeasible. That film from the Erwin’s grossed an incredible .4 million and is the highest-grossing film in the history of Roadside Attractions.Autumn de Wilde’s 2020 version of Emma is doing OK with million in North America and another million overseas. Its  million total is better than Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1996 version fared (though its million was all made Stateside). These are not Pride Prejudice numbers but, like I Still Believe, not too bad if the budget is small. Universal picked a bad time to finally spring The Hunt into theaters; the film opened to just .3 million and now likely will not even match its million production budget. The Hunt is third behind BlacKkKlansman ( million) and Glass ( million) as the most expensive Blumhouse production to date.Last week’s The Way Back took a steep 69 percent drop, and its total stands at .4 million. Even with a million budget, that is miles better than The Call of the Wild, which is only up to .1 million locally and 7 million globally and still chasing a 5 million price tag before prints and ads. The CGI-ed dog tale starring Harrison Ford at least outperformed Dolittle in the red for the year, but like all of the holdovers in the top 10 this week, it dropped between 60-75 percent from the week before. This Time Last Year: Captain Marvel DazzlesThree new wide releases and a limited release that made the top 10 were no match combined for Captain Marvel’s second weekend take of .98 million, driving its haul to 4.88 million in its first 10 days. Paramount’s animated disappointment, Wonder Park, opened to second with .85 million with young-adult weepie Five Feet Apart taking third with .19 million. Sci-fi thriller, Captive State started way back in seventh with .13 million and was beaten by No Manches Frida 2, which grossed .83 million in just 472 theaters, 2,000 fewer than Captive. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part finally crossed the 0 million mark in its sixth weekend. The top 10 films grossed 6.41 million and averaged 55% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated .35 million and averaged 67.5 percent. On the Vine: Will Limited Releases Brave the Market?Director John Krasinski took to social media to announce that his anticipated sequel A Quiet Place Part II has been postponed until further notice. For films still slated to open in limited release, check out what critics are saying about them here. The Full Top 10: March 13-15Onward (2020) 88% – .53 million (.29 million total)I Still Believe (2020) 51% – .5 million (.5 million total)Bloodshot (2020) 30% – .3 million (.3 million total)The Invisible Man (2020) 91% – million (.41 million total)The Hunt (2020) 57% – .32 million (.32 million total)Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) 63% – .57 million (5.8 million total)The Way Back (2020) 84% – .41 million (.43 million total)The Call of the Wild (2020) 62% – .24 million (.1 million total)EMMA. The Batman took a long time to take shape, but fans are finally starting to get the full picture of director Matt Reeves take on the character. At 2021 s DC FanDome event, fans of the oft-rebooted movie hero got a nice glimpse of what to expect from the film thanks to a new trailer. In it, the Riddler (Paul Dano) is taken into custody by the Gotham City Police. But that seems to have little effect on his bigger plan, which involves the Batman (Robert Pattinson), Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), and local mobster Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell). Its mix of Batman ’89 theatrics and Batman Begins realism may yet prove to be the right mix for this next iteration of the Caped Crusader.”At 2020 s DC FanDome, Reeves revealed the movie will take place in year two of Batman s crime-fighting career  an assertion backed up in the trailer by the reveal of a Batsignal a period in which he is adjusting to his new life and Gotham is adjusting to him. An HBO Max series tentatively titled Gotham P.D. will focus on Batman s year one, and follow corrupt cops in the city s police department.Let s take a look at more of what we know about the movie from earlier reveals as well as the history of how the project came together.[Updated on October 16, 2021]How The Batman Became Untangled from the DCEU(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Plans for the film began in 2014, when Warner Bros. had a massive, Marvel-style DC film universe in mind. An important pillar of that concept was Ben Affleck behind the cowl of the Dark Knight and in the director’s chair for a film called The Batman. It was to tie in to the character as he played it in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League and would follow the events of both films. Affleck teased the arrival of the DC Comics villain Deathstroke to his tale by posting a costume test with actor Joe Manganiello under the mask. The actor was later set to play the character in the film and made a brief appearance in the Justice League stinger scene. Some reports suggest the film would have taken place inside Arkham Asylum. But then things began to unravel. Despite commercial success, Batman v Superman was perceived as a creative misfire even as cameras began to roll on Justice League – leading to a rethink of the film s plot. Warner Bros. asked Affleck to re-write his script for The Batman as the shape of the film universe changed alongside Justice League. In January of 2017, he had stepped down as director with Matt Reeves soon taking over. He also eventually handed script duties over to Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, leaving many to wonder if Affleck would even star in the picture.Almost a full year of speculation followed until Affleck, then dealing with a number of personal problems, set the record straight in January of 2019, announcing his complete departure from the project. And with that, the original vision for The Batman gave way to Reeves’ new take. The New Players: Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Zoe Kravitz, and More(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Even before Affleck’s departure was confirmed, many began to speculate about the seventh person to wear the cowl in a theatrically released, live-action film. Rumors began to circle around The Lighthouse star Robert Pattinson, who emerged as the favorite and eventually took the role in May of 2019.Over the course of the following months, a cast list began to emerge, including Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman), Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Paul Dano as the Riddler, whose civilian identity in the film, Edward Nashton, is a one of his known aliases in the pages of DC comics. Over the Fall of 2019, Colin Farrell signed on as Oswald Cobblepot and Andy Serkis also stepped up to take over as Alfred Pennyworth from Jeremy Irons, who had played the character for Affleck s Batman. Other cast members include John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Con O’Neill as Chief Macheknize Bock, Alex Ferns as police commissioner Peter Savage, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Teen Wolf’s Max Carver and Charlie Carver also joined the cast, leading some to suggest they may play Batman rogues Tweedledum and Tweedledee.Behind the camera, Reeves’ crew includes director of photography Greig Fraser, editors William Hoy and Tyler Nelson, production designer James Chinlund and costume designer Jacqueline Durran. Reeves is producing the film alongside Dylan Clark while Simon Emanuel, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong, and Michael Uslan serve as executive producers. Michael Giacchino is set to score the film.At DC FanDome 2020, Reeves teased that, just as Batman is still finding himself in the movie, so too are the rogues gallery of villains we meet. As seen in the trailer, when we first encounter Selina Kyle, she s not Catwoman; ditto Farrell s Oswald Cobblepot, who s destined to be crime kingpin, the Penguin. From that list of cast and crew, a sense of The Batman began to emerge… as did a potential source of its story. The Long Halloween: A Serial Killer Stalks Batman and Gotham(Photo by DC Comics)Though Reeves referred to the plot as an original story from the moment he began answering questions about the film, the number of villains and supporting characters in the cast left many to wonder if it might be taking inspiration from Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.Set after the events of the seminal Batman: Year One storyline, it sees Batman attempting to learn the identity of a serial killer known as Holiday. It also accomplishes a few other things, like chronicling the year mobsters lost control of Gotham City to the costumed supervillains. The 13-issue miniseries was followed up by Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome, which saw Loeb and Sale return to some of The Long Halloween’s ideas, including the continuing deterioration of Gotham s organized crime families. But the key to The Long Halloween was its expansive cast and Batman encountering a mystery he could not easily crack.Early on, Reeves said he wanted to emphasize Batman as the world’s greatest detective – an element of the character generally downplayed in the more action-oriented Batman and Dark Knight film cycles – while also playing up the noirish elements inherent in the concept. Reeves said at DC FanDome 2020 that noirs like Chinatown have been a big inspiration for his approach to the material. Additionally, the costume test video of Pattinson in the batsuit and the Batmobile pictures clearly illustrate Batman during an early part of of his career, making the case for The Long Halloween as a primary source stronger.(Photo by Warner Bros.)It would not be the first time, though, the book was called upon as a source of inspiration or, indeed, the first time a Batman film used one of the better-known Batman stories in its development. The Dark Knight used one or two elements from the story while also grabbing from The Killing Joke. The Dark Knight Rises also pulled from the “No Man’s Land” story. But this should not suggest The Batman is a straight adaptation of The Long Halloween, as someone key to that story is missing from the film: Harvey Dent. The Long Halloween is also a Two-Face origin story that sees him promoted to Gotham City DA near the start of the story and, well, somewhere else by its conclusion. In lieu of Harvey, Sarsgaard plays Gil Colson, an original character for the film. Curiously, before Sarsgaard’s role was confirmed, some suggested he might be playing Harvey Dent, while yet others noted the character s name bares a resemblance to that of a corrupt Gotham Police officer who helped Two-Face in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. For the moment, we’re inclined to believe Sarsgaard is, in fact, playing a wholly new character with no ties to Gotham’s most famous lawyer. This suspicion also extends to Lawson’s Bella Reál, another new character said to be running for mayor in the film. As with DA Colson, we’re willing to accept this as the truth until presented with evidence that she is really Barbara Gordon or Poison Ivy.Making these obscure ties less likely, though, is the trailer released during the 2021 edition of DC FanDome. Based on the story hooks teased in the newer preview, the mystery plaguing the Batman is engineered solely by the Riddler, making him the key villain in a Batman film for the first time since 1995’s Batman Forever., in which he was portrayed by Jim Carrey. Granted, he shared his murderous plot in that film with Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Nevertheless, it seems more likely The Batman will take thematic ideas from The Long Halloween and leave most of its plot within its pages. The Look Of The Batman(Photo by @mattreevesLA)As with Joker, Warner Bros. made the choice to debut The Batman’s key costume in a short video before any paparazzi had a chance to shoots pictures of it on location. Seen through darkness and red light, the suit seems to employ a more bare-bones, off-the-shelf aesthetic. The body armor continues Batman ‘89’s basic design choice, but a cowl made of fabric sets it apart from all other cinematic Batmen. Some have also speculated the bat symbol is made of the gun Joe Chill used to kill the Waynes. It’s all pretty interesting even if the video makes it look a little too much like Daredevil’s costume. Subsequent set pics also offered a better look at the cowl, which may be inspired by Silver Age comic book artists like Dick Sprang and Carmine Infantino. At DC FanDome 2020, Reeves said that the fact this is only year two of Batman s career heavily influenced the design of the costume: Wayne built it himself, he s making adjustments, you can see the gashes from his scuffles on the suit. In March of 2020, Reeves unveiled the first look at the Batmobile. Eschewing the more outlandish design conventions established in Batman ’89, this car is, in fact, a muscle car with some obvious modifications. Long-time readers of Batman comics may even recognize the broad strokes of the design as the one Batman used through most of the 1980s and into the 1990s. The new Batmobile design continues the notion that Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne merely modified existing gear instead of inventing Bat-gadgets from whole cloth and, if nothing else, is an interesting departure from the previous Batman film cycles, particularly the tankish Tumbler and Justice League Batmobile.Ahead of the DC FanDome event in 2020, Reeves revealed even more in a Twitter post debuting the film s logo and FanDome-specific artwork:Excited to share the very first look at our official #TheBatman logo, and some very cool additional #DCFanDome artwork by the amazing @jimlee — see more of #TheBatman at the #DCFanDome global event in the Hall of Heroes this Saturday, 8/22! #TheBatman #DCFanDome #ForTheFans pic.twitter.com/ApfngNbyor Matt Reeves (@mattreevesLA) August 20, 2020Its Place In The DC Film Universe(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. TM & © DC Comics)Despite all the tell-tale markings of a reboot, The Batman’s place in the loose continuity of Warner Bros s DC film slate is still up for debate. During the early phases of development, Reeves suggested it could take place out of continuity like Joker, but quickly backpedaled to say it will have some ties and maybe even a cameo or two. At the same time, recasting Jim Gordon, who was played by J.K. Simmons in Justice League, with Wright also suggests the film is in a world all its own. But then again, the DC Universe is a place where world-changing events create convenient retcons. Pattinson could simply replace Affleck’s Batman in the new DC film reality where Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) co-exists with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Suicide Squad of 2021. Is all depends on whether or not Reeves would be interested in utilizing any of those ideas or, indeed, if Pattinson would want to bring his Batman to play with the other DC film heroes. The film will be released at the beginning of a full roster for the DC film universe, which includes The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Black Adam. We wouldn’t put it past Warner Bros. to try to connect them all to The Batman, but we won’t be disappointed if they remain separate. In the meantime, though, the principal cast is expected to return for at least two sequels to The Batman. The Batman is currently scheduled for release on March 4, 2022.Thumbnail image by Warner Bros. 0.30.2 9月喜迎What happens when a professional journalist goes free-range as a podcaster with no checks on her work? That s just one question Truth Be Told creator Nichelle Tramble Spellman (Justified, The Good Wife) tackles in the new Apple TV+ legal drama.Based on Kathleen Barber s 2017 novel Are You Sleeping,  Truth Be Told stars Aaron Paul as Warren Cave (Paul), a young man sent to prison 18 years ago for a murder he may not have committed, and Octavia Spencer as Poppy Parnell, a journalist and podcaster who initially helped put him behind bars only to realize two decades later that she may have contributed to the incarceration of an innocent man.Exploring topics of race, privacy, and the way we consume and are influenced by media, Spellman flips the true-crime genre on its head in Truth Be Told, which premieres also stars Lizzy Caplan, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Beach, and Elizabeth Perkins.True-crime podcasts have been the rage for some time. Yet, as addictive as they can be, there are also concerns about the lack of oversight in the way information is researched, collected, and delivered to the public. What is true one week, can be debunked in the next episode. And that can be tough for audiences to keep up with, especially if the show has already done its part in swaying public opinion.Just how harmful can unchecked journalism be, especially in this fast-paced cancel-culture period we re currently living in? And what are the consequences that may lie behind the public justice that can unfold after consuming popular episodic true-crime entertainment like the hit podcast Serial or Netflix s docu-series Making a Murderer?(Photo by Apple TV+) I like the idea of this woman who s a trained journalist with really great credits, who is now in a field where there are no checks and balances. There are no bosses — she s her own boss, Spellman explained during the show s press junket. As she goes down this rabbit hole, there s no editor, there s no publisher, there s no one to pull her back in. She goes against the first rule by making it personal. That s how we sort of got into the story, asking if there s a ripple effect in crime. The person at the center of it, how does her ambition couple with her guilt? Spellman and Spencer both share an obsession with the true-crime genre and the armchair-detective aspect of shows like the ones mentioned above, as well as Snapped, Cold Case Files, and Forensic Files. That listener-as-participant element of the story drew the Oscar-winner to the project. I was just excited to get to play something very close to how my mind works as an investigator, Spencer revealed. The only thing is, I like working from behind the screen, you know? The idea of actually being out in the real world asking questions, investigating in that way is a little scary. For the Shape Of Water actress, the biggest allure of the project was being able to play a character with a flawed moral compass. Sure, Poppy wants to discover the truth, but is it her guilt or the ever-present threat to her professional reputation that is driving the podcaster on this dangerous mission? That s what I love about Poppy, she answered. Her ascent into greatness — or fame or money — came on the back of whether or not this affluent young kid would get a fair trial. Would he be found guilty? For her, everything pointed at guilty. Fast forward 20 years, when you now have the cancel culture with social media and people are listening to her podcast. There s this fervor around it, an excitement, and she realized: Could she have been wrong? And what are the implications of her being wrong? (Photo by Apple TV+)This all brings us to the man on the other side of the argument: Warren Cave. When Poppy decides to re-examine his murder case for her podcast, the two eventually reunite, and the results, at least at the beginning, are a bit upsetting. Not only did Poppy possibly have a hand in putting an innocent man in jail, but his survival in prison meant Warren took some drastic measures. He was pushed into a corner, Aaron Paul said, discussing the reason his character became a white supremacist. He was thrown in prison at a very young age and he had to pick a side — that s the only way to really survive. Otherwise, he s just a punching bag 24/7. The side he picked was the Aryan Nation Brotherhood, which is a really terrifying sort of just dangerous place to be. Truth Be Told may be inspired by Are You Sleeping, but Spellman takes liberties with the story being told here. Not only did she pivot a bit from the original subject matter — according to the showrunner, Poppy Parnell was an ancillary character in the book — she also kept the outcome of the series a secret from the actors. At the very beginning of the shoot, my first burning question was, Well, did he do it?' Paul revealed. And Michelle was like, I m not telling you. And then I go, But I m the actor playing the guy, I should know if he did it or not! I honestly did not know whether or not he was innocent until the very end, truly. How does an actor play a convict who may be innocent of the crime he was imprisoned for? Especially if you, as the actor, don t know if he is in fact innocent? I always try to bring heart to any character I m playing whether it s a very bad person or a good person, Paul said. I just had to play him as honest as I saw him. Putting the actors pursuit of the truth of their characters onscreen may be tricky, but created an intriguing push-and-pull dynamic between the honesty of the roles and the show s overall quest for truth. In the criminal world, in the true-crime world, one of the things that they tell you that you can t rely on is the eyewitness because the truth is always malleable, Spencer said. To an eyewitness, you may not see or remember the same thing that I see or remember. So truth is sadly, it s perception and how we all remember this moment. I think truth is shaped by whatever lens you view the world. And whatever your truth is will inform what you think the truth is. A much as fans of the genre yearn to do their own investigative work in between episodes of their own favorite podcast, there s a largely not-talked-about component to the popularity of true-crime reporting and dramatization: the impact on the families involved. I was watching Making a Murderer, Spellman said. There was one point in the first season where I was thinking, God, this must be awful for the woman s family. You know what I mean? That this has become something that s like watercooler talk. And that idea that, if you had this tragedy in your past, and it s been personal, and it s something that your family has dealt with, and then it becomes this thing, where maybe your coworkers are talking about it. Maybe that s a secret that you didn t tell at work, because it s too painful. And then we have this discussion, this back-and-forth about these very real people as if they re fictional characters. (Photo by Apple TV+)Take cinematic stories like Netflix s Mindhunter, Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, and the Zach Efron–starrer Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, for instance. The bloody exploits of serial killers like Charles Manson and Ted Bundy have become a part of our pop culture lexicon, but their violent deeds caused very real pain for their victims and their victims families. It just becomes a story after a while, Spellman explained. Other people s pain is just a story. It s now a shorthand story, but that pain was real and it s still real for all of those families. So we touch on it when we go to Warren s family, Poppy s family [there s a] ripple effect there. Which brings us back to Poppy s podcast that threads it all together. As gimmicky as it may sound to have a voiceover narration guide an audience through the mystery that is slowly unfolding, that component works for Truth Be Told. And one of the reasons why, according to Spellman, is the unreliability of its host. The podcast is kind of an unreliable narrator, she said. We don t know Poppy s agenda. And we don t know when or if we can believe her. Truth Be Told episodes 1-3 are now streaming on Apple TV+.Like this? Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s opening, expanding, and coming to the specialty box office. From promising releases from new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week in Fresh Indie Finds. This week at the specialty box office, we get further evidence that the 2020 Oscar race for Best Documentary and Best International Film is going to leave everyone disappointed; there are just too many award-worthy features. This week we add a German horror-thriller and dramatic tale of workers on strike in France to the Best International Film short-list and two bio-documentaries that would in any other year be almost assured a spot on the Oscar docs shortlist but will likely not make the cut given this year s staggering competition. And as we look to upcoming indie releases, new trailers from Martin Freeman and Nicolas Cage have piqued our interest.Opening This Weekend
2. HALLOWEEN KILLS IN 2020, AND HALLOWEEN ENDS IN 2021 Ryan FujitaniFollowing the 9 million domestic box office of last year s soft reboot of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions quickly confirmed plans for at least one more Halloween sequel. More recently, it was confirmed first that Jamie Lee Curtis will be returning, and that actually it would be two sequels that will be filming back-to-back. This week, Universal and Blumhouse made it official by announcing that the sequels will be titled Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and Halloween Ends (10/15/2021). Both sequels will have the same director, David Gordon Green, who co-wrote them with actor Danny McBride, who also co-wrote last year s Halloween with Green.3. BEN AFFLECK AND MATT DAMON TO REUNITE FOR RIDLEY SCOTT S THE LAST DUEL (Photo by Sara Cozolino/Everett Collection)Before he directed films like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator, Ridley Scott made his directorial debut in 1977 with The Duellists, about French officers during the Napoleonic Wars engaged in a series of duels in the early 1800s. Things came full circle this week with the news that Scott is now attached to direct The Last Duel, which is set in 14th century France (the distinction here is that The Last Duel concerns a medieval trial-by-combat between knights). The Last Duel will also be a reunion project for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who will co-star and co-write (along with Nicole Holofcener). This week, Damon also signed on to star in an independent drama called Stillwater, which will also be set in France.4. WALKING DEAD SPINOFF MOVIE GETS THEATRICAL RELEASE(Photo by AMC)When Andrew Lincoln s Rick Grimes got on a helicopter last year and flew away from The Walking Dead, it was quickly announced that AMC had plans for a series of spinoff movies about the continuing adventures of Rick Grimes. At San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, the first teaser trailer for a Walking Dead movie debuted, but the biggest surprise had nothing to do with new plot twists. Instead, the surprise was that Universal Pictures has picked up the Walking Dead movie for theatrical distribution (i.e. not just as an AMC movie). The plan is still for three movies starring Andrew Lincoln, with Lincoln expected to spend two months on each movie. Andrew Lincoln also signed on this week to join Naomi Watts in Penguin Bloom, playing Watts husband as their family befriends an injured Australian magpie chick (bird).5. JAVIER BARDEM EXPECTED TO PLAY KING TRITON IN THE LITTLE MERMAID (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Following the casting earlier this month of Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney s live action remake of The Little Mermaid, fans quickly began speculating about who might play her father, King Triton. Most fans picked black actors, with Idris Elba being a popular choice, but some also chose Terry Crews. As it turns out, Disney instead went with Academy Award-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales). In the original animated movie, King Triton does not have his own song (he does have one in the stage musical called The World Above ), so it s probably likely that Bardem won t be singing in the live-action version either.6. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH TO PORTRAY BRITISH ARTIST LOUIS WAIN(Photo by Jack English/© Weinstein Co.)The Cassius Marcellus Coolidge painting series Dogs Playing Poker is something of an iconic example of American kitsch. Around the same time in England, however, the artist Louis Wain had a similar series of paintings of cats that frequently had Big Eyes (a la Keane), exaggerated toothy smiles, or early examples of psychedelic art. It s crazy stuff, and now Benedict Cumberbatch (whose Doctor Strange also dabbled in psychedelia) is signed to star in the biopic Louis Wain for Amazon Studios. Cumberbatch s co-stars will include Claire Foy, Toby Jones, and Andrea Riseborough.7. HOPEFULLY JENNIFER LAWRENCE WON T GET STITCHES AS THE MOB GIRL(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Now that Dark Phoenix (Rotten at 23%) is done and over with, Jennifer Lawrence s time in the X-Men franchise is officially done, leaving her with no ongoing franchise (since The Hunger Games ended in 2015, and last year s Red Sparrow was a non-starter). It may well be that Lawrence will soon find another, but for now, she appears to be aiming for smaller movies. With that in mind, Jennifer Lawrence is now attached to star in Mob Girl, based on Teresa Carpenter s novel which was itself based on the true story of 1970s and 1980s mob informant Arlyne Weiss-Brickman. Mob Girl will reportedly depict how Weiss-Brickman grew up around wise guys, including running errands for them, but decided to cooperate with the FBI after a loan shark threatened to harm her teenage daughter. (Jennifer Lawrence is only 28 years old, so her daughter may be younger in this movie version.)8. CHRIS ROCK S SAW SPINOFF BUMPED UP FIVE MONTHS TO BE A BIG SUMMER RELEASE (Photo by Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)One factor (besides, you know, all the torture) that has united all movies in the Saw franchise to date has been the release date, which has always been between October 23rd (Saw VI) and October 29th (Saw and Saw 3D). So, when Chris Rock announced that he was producing and starring in a Saw spinoff (sometimes called The Organ Donor online), the presumed release date was in October of 2020. Perhaps tying into the film s premise as a Saw spinoff and not a Saw movie exactly, Lionsgate this week bumped up Chris Rock s film to a release date of May 15, 2020 (against the Scooby-Doo reboot Scoob). Rock will star in the film as a police detective investigating a series of gruesome crimes, with Samuel L. Jackson also on board to play Rock s character s father.9. JENNIFER LOPEZ MAY DIRECT (HERSELF IN) THE GODMOTHER  (Photo by Peter Iovino/©CBS Films)The ensemble stripper crime comedy Hustlers (9/13/2019) is now less than two months away, but one of its stars, Jennifer Lopez, is already preparing for new films in 2020 and beyond. Following flops like UglyDolls, Poms, and Best of Enemies, STX Entertainment is reportedly looking for big stars for their next moves, and one of them is going to be Jennifer Lopez. Jenny from the Block is now producing and will star in a drug lord drama called The Godmother for STXfilms. Lopez may also make her directorial debut with the film, in which she plays real life Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, who was (real life spoiler warning) shot and killed in 2012 at the age of 69 (Jennifer Lopez is only 50). Lopez s next film after Hustlers will be the romantic comedy Marry Me, costarring Owen Wilson. This week, the Marry Me cast expanded as Lopez and Wilson will now be joined by Sarah Silverman and British actor John Bradley, who has a lot more time on his hands now that his run as Samwell Tarly on HBO s Game of Thrones is done.Like this? Kimberly Potts for Rotten Tomatoes: What attracted you to this topic, to this project?Kerry Ehrin: Initially it was Brian Stelter s book, Top of the Morning (which the Apple TV+ series is based on). I really liked it, and the tone of the world he was describing, and I was just saying it felt like a very good stage to write great character stories on, set against this high stakes world, but also there s a social absurdity to that world … so competitive, and the behavior gets a little bit like, almost high school-ish. So that was a very intriguing world to me. And then obviously Reese and Jennifer, getting to create complex female characters with high profile, high stakes jobs, and write about female relationships in a real way was very intriguing to me. All those elements don t line up every day.(Photo by Apple TV+)One of the most things with the stars of morning TV is how much their personal lives are impacted by their jobs. Even just the fact that they have to get up at these ridiculous hours — that has to impact their time with their kids and their family and friends and personal time. How much are you going to get into that, Alex and Bradley s personal lives, as the season goes on?Ehrin: A great deal. I think that s a big part of Alex s story, how much she has sacrificed to get to that top level. And Bradley is really just entering into this world. So her story is more about being from the outside and trying to acclimate and immerse into it … When you live those kind of hours, there s no question that it becomes your life and it dictates your life. Any high-stress job becomes your life and dictates your life.I m guessing that s something you can relate to as a showrunner.Ehrin: Oh, 100 percent. I mean, I could also relate to it when I was working retail. Jobs do end up dictating your life. But yeah, I mean, when you have a ton of financial responsibility for other people, you do live with it all the time.Getting into the characters, viewers are going to assume that Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is Matt Lauer. What is your response to that?Ehrin: Well, I mean, it isn t. I get, I guess, why people would go there. I don t know … I don t know why they never pick Charlie Rose. But all I can tell you is … it isn t Matt Lauer. It s an amalgam of human beings that I ve interacted with, that have been in my life, and some people that have been in the public eye. But it really is an original tale. It isn t “The Matt Lauer Story” at all. Nor did I want to write that.(Photo by Apple TV+)In the first three episodes, viewers get some viewpoints that they might not be expecting. This is a discussion of all angles and some nuanced points of view that haven’t played out so much in a scripted series. Episode three in particular, with Mitch’s conversation with the director played by Martin Short — do you think people are ready for, or maybe even craving at this point, a nuanced look at this subject?Ehrin: I feel like there s a lot of layers to that question. I mean, one of them is, there s a specific road we re going down with the stories that we re telling, and you re meeting a character in the beginning, so there s that aspect of it. I m trying to say this without giving too much stuff away. It’s a story about human beings who are in this web. And I don t think (Mitch) is written overly sympathetically. It s interesting to me that people are saying, Oh, he s so sympathetic. And I don t think he s any more sympathetic than anyone in the show. I think everyone on the show is really screwed up in different ways. He’s a narcissist, he clearly lives inside his own reality of what s real and what s right. And I mean, yeah, Steve Carell is a likable, charming guy, but so are a lot of these guys. So I think you have to look at the whole enchilada. And I would say this will be a better discussion after episode ten.It s interesting to see this particular story play out from all these different points of view.Ehrin: It s a huge thing. There s a huge movement. It has affected everybody, and it s seismic. So yeah, it s a story of looking at it and at all the elements.(Photo by Apple TV+)Kudos for keeping the Martin Short cameo under wraps. He was great, and having such a beloved actor playing that character, saying those shocking things about his behavior, and challenging Mitch to consider his own behavior, was impactful. I hope the surprise of his appearance isn’t spoiled for people before they watch the episode.Ehrin: That would actually be great, because it is so exciting to see him, and he s so good. Man, that guy is a great actor. He s really, really good. What s your goal overall with the development of Bradley and Alex s characters? Ehrin: They both have important individual stories. Alex s being about a highly successful person who has sacrificed so much of her life and was so close to this partner who gets fired for sexual misconduct. And it really is about how it dismantles her life. And then Bradley s is about a person who has a lot of demons from her family and isn t really psychologically or emotionally set up for success, and finds herself pulled into this world. And how do you, as sort of an emotional outsider of success, how do you function in that world? And can you survive it? Can you thrive in it or is that impossible? In addition to that, there is the story of these two women who come into each other s lives, and I really wanted to do a realistic story and not make them hate each other, like All About Eve, or they re best friends and they re never mean. I really wanted to do just a real nuanced portrayal of all (aspects) of a female working relationship — all of its wonderful complexities. And that s been the ongoing road. That s the heart of it to me, what that relationship is about and how it develops and evolves.(Photo by Apple TV+)We’ve met Bradley’s family, her mom and her brother, and there have been hints that she has sort of been almost a parental figure for both of them. Is that something we’ll get into a lot more?Ehrin: Yeah. That s a big part of Bradley s character, who she is and dealing with that. If you have baggage that you haven t dealt with and you get thrust into a high-stress, high-profile job, it s a different experience than someone who does not have that baggage. You ve made great television, told great stories, on network and cable, and now a streaming service. Has it been different in any big ways creating this show for a streaming service?Ehrin: There s been more freedom, certainly. I think that was always a challenge for me, because I ve been doing this for a while, and for a big chunk of my career there weren t all these venues available. And you had to fit in (on)  broadcast, and it was always, always, always a challenge to — if you re a little idiosyncratic, if you re a little dark, if you re a little to the left of center, it was just harder to fit into that mold, that box, and still get to play with your whole deck of cards.Do you feel like you finally have gotten to do a show, this show, exactly how you would want to do it?Ehrin: Yeah, I do. I mean, I felt that way about Bates as well, except for the swearing. It really would have made it a little more (realistic) to have people be able to talk the way people actually speak. And also, commercials are just death to me. That used to kill me about Bates, because I felt like it was like an opera, and then you d be so into these huge, crazy things, and then it s an ad for erectile dysfunction or insurance. And it just was like, it completely wrecked it for me. So that was always hard. But this is pretty cool. It is a lot more freedom. It s a lot more money to make stuff. It s been pretty great. New episodes of The Morning Show premiere on Fridays on Apple TV+.

This week at the specialty box office, we find a documentary about a firebrand Texas journalist who famously dubbed President George W. Bush shrub (aka The little Bush) and a political thriller, starring Keira Knightley, about translator-turned-whistleblower Katharine Gun, who risked everything to bring light to an illegal spying operation by the United States of America. In our Indie Trailer section, we find new clips featuring Tye Sheridan and Jeff Goldblum and a new documentary on Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher.Opening This Weekend

鸿图娱乐 For fans of For All Mankind creator Ronald D. Moore’s other work — Battlestar Galactica or Outlander, for example — skipping a year or two of story between seasons should not be all that surprising. But when the Apple TV+ series returns this week, 10 years will have passed since astronaut Ed Baldwin, played by Suicide Squad’s Joel Kinnaman, returned to Earth from his extended stay on the Moon. It is a jump Moore said is “baked into the premise” and will continue with each subsequent season. But as Kinnaman told Rotten Tomatoes recently, the jump was still a surprise as so much of the first season was still unresolved.“Where we left off, Ed and Karen [were] going through the ultimate tragedy that a family can go through,” he said of the place season 1 left him and Shantel VanSanten, who plays Ed’s wife on the series. “As an actor, it s like that s the challenge that you re sort of looking forward to portraying. And then we come in [for season 2], we find Ed at this sort of … he s almost at peace. He s almost happy. And you see very little of his anger management issues and he has really mellowed out.”(Photo by Apple TV+)That change in Ed s character may be more surprising to viewers than any of the other divergences From All Mankind will showcase as it enters a 1980s in which the space race is still on. And when you consider that Edward Kennedy won the 1972 presidential election in the show’s reality, there are plenty of surprising ways world events could unfold.“I think that s really where the sophistication of the writing comes in,” Kinnaman continued. “They just found a different way to tell that story. Ten years have passed, so the wounds aren t going to be on the outside anymore. They re going to be on the inside. And I love the way that things just come out in ways where you just did not see it coming. You didn t expect it. I feel like that s how life is. It doesn t follow an A, B, C pattern.”The flow of that life also puts Ed in a new position at NASA which the actor teased may lead him to the “middle” of a crisis between the global superpowers and “some decisions in relation to it at some point.”And for fans of Ed’s incredible ability to put his foot in his mouth at exactly the wrong time, Kinnaman said, “He s always going to find a way to say the wrong thing. But I think he says the wrong thing at the right time.”(Photo by Apple TV+)Whether or not this particular instance of Ed saying the wrong thing relates to the potential for a World War III in the show’s reality remains to be seen.Another surprise: Ed and Karen are still together despite the death of their son Shane (Tait Blum) while Ed was still on the Moon.“Going through what they went through, that s something that a majority of relationships and marriages don t survive from in reality. It s just one of those things that it s very hard to stay together after,” Kinnaman said.Although the characters were able to save their marriage, Kinnaman suggested it may have led to a sacrifice Ed makes in the years between seasons.(Photo by Apple TV+)“The pain of going through that and not been able to be there — not be a rock in that situation — that s something that he just swore to himself that he was never going to do again,” he explained. “In the backstory, I think we find out some of it over the course of the second season, they had some really rough patches in the span of those 10 years that we didn t see.“Their relationship is continually tested” in the second season, he added.Kinnaman credited VanSanten with making those tests of the relationship some of the best — and hardest — work on the show.“She just seems to have an express route down to those dark, dark emotions,” he explained. “There s an element of losing control to get to that place [that is] really hard to create on your own. And it s twice as hard to create if the person that you re working with doesn t feel like they re real, you know? But if you really feel that they re there, and they re really going for it, then it makes it a lot easier. So I went to places in a few scenes [with her] in this season where I haven t been able to do that before.”
