我最怕的就是米哈游继续做手游,怕不是钱赚得更多以后,成了腾讯游戏2.0,分割国内手游市场躺着赚钱不再锐意进取,这一点是我最不愿意看到的。 The Worst Christmas MoviesFrom painful family reunions to sequels no child asked for to multiple Vince Vaughn and Tim Allen vehicles, these are all the Christmas films that scored less than 30% on the Tomatometer. And to make sure these movies landed on enough critics naughty lists to be deemed truly universally loathed, every entry had to have at least 20 reviews for inclusion. This leaves the likes of Kirk Cameron s Saving Christmas and Nativity 3: Dude, Where s My Donkey?! out in the cold, but makes plenty of space for Home Alone 3, Christmas With the Kranks, and Deck the Halls. 3.33.5 6月喜迎This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Barbie, the Fletch reboot, and Guys and Dolls. This WEEK S TOP STORYKINGSMAN DIRECTOR RECRUITS STAR-STUDDED ENSEMBLE FOR ARGYLLE (Photo by David James/©Paramount)British director Matthew Vaughn has largely made a name for himself on movies based on comic books. After directing both Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, Vaughn returned to comic books again with Mark Millar s Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 75%), the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and the upcoming prequel The King s Man. Perhaps ready to start another possible new franchise, Matthew Vaughn is preparing to adapt the upcoming spy novel Argylle, and he has recruited an impressive ensemble cast. It appears that the title character, the world s greatest spy , will be played by Henry Cavill (who s previously appeared in the spy movies The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible Fallout). Cavill s Argylle co-stars will include Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherina O Hara, and, in her acting debut, pop star Dua Lipa.Other Top Headlines1. GRETA GERWIG TO DIRECT MARGOT ROBBIE S BARBIE FOR 2023 (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Some movies can get announced, developed, and produced within a couple of years, and other movies languish in development hell for years or even decades (and some never do get made). One such example of that is the live-action Barbie movie, which Mattel has been developing since at least 2009. To put that in perspective, in 2009, there were only two movies released in what we now know as the MCU (Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk), which includes dozens of movies now, while there still isn t a single Barbie. For a while, it looked like Amy Schumer or Anne Hathaway might star in Barbie, but eventually Margot Robbie came aboard. Warner Bros. has finally officially announced that Barbie will indeed start filming in early 2022 at Leavesden Studios in London, under the direction of Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%; Little Women, Certified Fresh at 95%). Back when Amy Schumer was (almost) involved, the Barbie movie was to be a fish out of water story about Barbie coming from her toy world to the real world, but Margot Robbie (who s also producing) and Gerwig are expected to have changed the premise, although it s not yet known to what.2. GUYS AND DOLLS TO BE REMADE BY DIRECTOR OF CHICAGO AND DREAMGIRLS (Photo by Everett Collection)Another project that has been kicking around development for well over a decade is the idea of a remake of the classic 1955 gangster musical Guys and Dolls (Fresh at 91%), which originally starred Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. To finally get the remake going, TriStar Pictures has enlisted the help of musical director Bill Condon, whose filmography includes the Broadway adaptations Chicago (Certified Fresh at 86%) and Dreamgirls (Certified Fresh at 78%), as well as The Greatest Showman (Rotten at  57%) and Disney s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast (Fresh at 71%). Over the years, several actors have considered taking on Guys and Dolls, including Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and most recently, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (and we should also note that since the movie isn t yet cast, it s still possible any of those actors could star in the movie when it eventually happens).3. MICHELLE WILLIAMS CAST AS HENRY VIII S FINAL WIFE IN HORROR FILM FIREBRAND (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)The life of England s King Henry VIII has long interested writers dating all the way back to Shakespeare, which has also resulted in dozens of movies about either his life or other people in his immediate orbit. Part of the fascination with Henry VIII has to do with the way he went through wives (spoiler: some were killed off), and now, Michelle Williams is set to star as Catherine Parr, Henry VIII s final wife, in a psychological horror film called Firebrand. The focus on Catherine Parr is a bit unusual, because Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour are typically the wives that both film and literature tend to focus on. It s also worth noting that Firebrand is described as psychological horror, which suggests that Henry VIII himself (who hasn t been cast yet) may be the film s villain.4. ZACK SNYDER IS READY FOR HIS OWN STAR WARS (SORT OF) (Photo by ©Netflix)Director Zack Snyder has risen to that rare level of fame where his name alone is a draw, as in Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 71%), though the irony of that title is that Justice League is obviously an adaptation of someone else s work. More recently, Snyder has been focusing his attention on projects for Netflix, starting with the zombie heist thriller Army of the Dead (Fresh at 68%) and continuing with the upcoming prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. For his latest Netflix project, Snyder appears to be setting his ambitious sights on the stars, as he will co-write, produce, and direct a sci-fi fantasy adventure called Rebel Moon, which is being compared to George Lucas original Star Wars. Rebel Moon will be about a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrant called Balisarius, leading them to recruit a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand. 5. JAVIER BARDEM TO VOICE LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE IN 2022 MUSICAL (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Movie adaptations of children s books are perhaps not as frequently discussed as say, comic book movies or remakes, but Hollywood has been steadily turning to them as a source for children s films since in the 1930s (and The Wizard of Oz). The latest is the 1965 picture book Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by Bernard Waber, which is now in production as a live-action/animated hybrid for release next year (7/22/2022). The role of the titular reptile (coincidentally announced in the same week that Alligator Loki is all the rage on Twitter) will be voiced by Spanish actor Javier Bardem, whose big budget franchise work has included such movies as Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Bardem will also soon be seen as King Triton in Disney s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The songwriting team of Benj Pasek Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) are currently working on original songs for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.6. MAD MEN STARS TO REUNITE FOR FLETCH REBOOT (Photo by Justina Mintz/©AMC)For fans of 1980s movies, the 1985 movie Fletch (Fresh at 77%) (and its sequel Fletch Lives) might be synonymous with the film s star, Chevy Chase, but the character actually first got his start as the star of a series of several novels by mystery author Gregory McDonald. There have been attempts to reboot Fletch in the decades since, with perhaps the project that came closest to actually happening being Kevin Smith s adaptation of the first novel, Fletch Won, in which Smith was hoping to cast Jason Lee (TV s My Name is Earl), but it didn t happen. Instead, it s Mad Men star Jon Hamm who is reviving Fletch with an ada

A voracious TV consumer could simply work their way down the list of every Certified Fresh TV show of 2018, or have a look at Rotten Tomatoes staff picks. Our editorial staff has considered the year in television and curated a list of series that may not have met the criteria for Certified Fresh, but nonetheless have captured our imaginations and earned our recommendation anyway. The Expanse 94%What It Is: In the 23rd century, after colonizing the solar system, humans make first contact with an alien race. But rather than meet face-to-whatever, the interaction occurs via the ancient, extinct race s super-advanced A.I. technology, which humanity struggles to understand, communicate with, and ultimately control. Why You Should Watch It: It s been 10 years since Syfy s Battlestar Galactica remake from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) went off the air. The series, which topped our list of the 100 best sci-fi series of all time, won worldwide fans through its gritty space-opera storylines about the human struggle with and against intelligent machines. The BSG world felt lived in, and its characters, both human and machine, presented a seemingly viable space-based future. The Expanse, which Amazon dramatically rescued from cancellation this year, is BSG s very worthy successor in offering a similarly complex sci-fi tale with engaging characters and award-worthy production design. It stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, and Thomas Jane. Why the show hasn t enjoyed the same level of worldwide appeal is one of the series greatest mysteries.Where to Watch: Amazon, Syfy (season 3)Commitment: around 25 hoursPicked By: Debbie Day, TV Features EditorBarry 99%What It Is: In this dry, sometimes unexpectedly somber HBO dark comedy, a professional killer for hire from the Midwest travels to Los Angeles for a hit and stumbles into an acting class, where he not only discovers a community of aspiring actors who welcome him but also begins to imagine a quieter, more normal life. Why You Should Watch It: Thanks to his up-for-anything enthusiasm and easygoing charisma — not to mention his impeccable comedic timing — SNL and Documentary Now alum Bill Hader has earned a sizable fanbase over the years. Those fans were always going to show up for Barry, no matter how good (or bad) it was. Fortunately, the series does a magnificent job balancing Hader s natural boyish charm and his less frequently utilized — but still incredibly effective — proficiency at communicating deep pathos (see: The Skeleton Twins), and he s aided by a stellar ensemble that includes Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Goldberg, and Henry Winkler in one of his finest roles in years.Barry begins with a funny idea, infuses it with real emotional investment, and tosses in a few Oh, sh ! moments just to keep you on your toes. Hader and Winkler have already taken home Emmys for their efforts, and they re both up for Golden Globes next, so now is as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about.Where to Watch: HBOGOCommitment: A little over 4.5 hoursPicked by: Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorBabylon Berlin What It Is: While investigating a pornography ring, Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) discovers a web of conspiracies with huge implications for Germany as a whole. Why You Should Watch It: The idea of the Weimar Republic (the era of German history that spanned from the end of World War I until the rise of the Nazis) has exerted a powerful fascination to this day. It was a time that produced a flowering of artistic expression — from the Bauhaus Movement to The Threepenny Opera, not to mention such cinematic masterworks as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel — and a moment of (relative) tolerance for LGBTQ people. It was also a time of political upheaval, during which a democratic government attempted to hold together a nation struggling with extreme economic insecurity, a time when communists and fascists brawled in the streets. Historians dispute some elements of this narrative as myth, but while Babylon Berlin may be imperfect history, it’s exhilarating entertainment. Its Berlin is all bright neon and dark shadows, decadent parties and sudden outbursts of violence, mysteries and underground plots. We all know the horrible ending to this story, but the characters in Babylon Berlin don’t, and seeing this tumultuous period through the lives of regular people living in the moment gives the whole thing an air of haunting pathos.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: Just shy of 16 hoursPicked By: Tim Ryan, Review Curation ManagerKilling Eve 89%What It Is: This badass British spy thriller follows two female leads — MI5 intelligence officer Eve (Sandra Oh) and international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) — who become obsessed with tracking each other down. Why You Should Watch It: There’s a reason Oh is getting finally getting her long-deserved award recognition for this role: She’s phenomenal as a mild-mannered government employee who heads up a task force to find a female assassin (an also-phenomenal Comer), beginning a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the two women. The BBC America series is also frequently incredibly funny, thanks to sharp writing from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag).Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunesCommitment: About 5.5 hoursPicked By: Jean Bentley, Assistant TV EditorPeaky Blinders 92%What It Is: A raw mob epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), a World War I veteran and leader of the “Peaky Blinders” gang, has started the family business of running a bookie service as well as providing local muscle. Why You Should Watch It: This gritty crime drama will keep you glued to your screen as Tommy tries to build his empire and cement his legacy, all while facing the ever-changing landscape of the new century post-WWI. Guns, gambling, influence, politics, and the streets — this show has it all. Great costume and set design lure viewers into 1919 England to experience the region s post-war trauma. See how far Tommy will go to make a buck and gain power and the collateral damage his family must endure because of it. The series did not offer a new season to U.S. audiences in 2018, but with season 5 coming in 2019, now is a perfect time to binge it.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 24 hoursPicked By: Shane Crocker, Motion Graphic DesignerChilling Adventures of Sabrina 81%What It Is: This comic book–adapted Netflix series from the creator of Riverdale is a dark reimagining of the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch story. Half-witch, half-mortal Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) refuses to sacrifice her human relationships in order to keep her witchy powers and must navigate the boundaries between the mortal and supernatural worlds. Why You Should Watch It: If you’re the kind of witch who wishes Halloween could be a year-long holiday, look no further than Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This show has plenty of campy magic and glamorous gore, but it’s more than flashy spells and Satanic references. Each of Sabrina’s allies — her aunts, cousin Ambrose, human friends, and demonic frenemies — has their own depth and intrigue, which makes their world colorful and worth a deep investment. It’s ultimately a coming-of-age story: Watching Sabrina come into her own, and change minds to do so, is exciting, empowering, and fun. She makes some big mistakes along the way, but who can blame her? She’s only just learning to play with hellfire.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 11 hoursPicked By: Sophie-Marie Prime, USC’s Rotten Tomatoes FellowForever 95%What It Is: Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen star as an ordinary married couple tethered to routine until a freak accident changes everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world. Why You Should Watch It: Much has been written about how Better Call Saul is an ode to the everyday (crime and dubious legal practices notwithstanding). They couldn t be more different, but if you re a fan of BCS, 2018 s Forever will appeal just as well. Created by Alan Yang of Master of None and featuring prolific comedic actors Rudolph and Armisen (do they ever sleep?), the show poses big questions while simultaneously offering tiny details for viewers to chew on long after the final episode of this compact series ends. Avoid spoilers as much as possible before indulging in this series, which somehow marries banality and longing to great effect.Where to Watch: AmazonCommitment: 4 hoursPicked By: Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorSchitt's Creek 93%What It Is: Schitt’s Creek is an amalgam of everything that is good and holy about Canadian entertainment. Why You Should Watch It: Led by Eugene Levy, his gorgeous son Dan, and their beautifully thick eyebrows, Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family, their fall from grace, and their new life in a tiny town surrounded by some of the most wonderful, eccentric, and underrated characters on TV. The series is a rare bird: both funny and heartwarming, while completely insane and totally relatable. In watching, I have laughed so hard I cried, but I have also cried so hard that I had to laugh (specifically, season 4, episode 6). The relationships, the chemistry, the number of wigs Moira owns, Alexis’ vocal fry, and so on — everything about this show is so perfectly curated that you would be hard pressed to find anything else like it on television.Where To Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, VuduCommitment: About 20 hoursPicked By: Zoey Moore, Community ManagerManiac 84%What It Is: Loosely based on a Norwegian show of the same name, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s mindtrip of a miniseries delves into the depths of the human mind with humor, heart, and just the right amount of heady conversations to keep you thinking. Why You Should Watch It: It’s the kind of show that can delicately explore the fragile folds that are the human mind and mental health, while still provoking a fully belly laugh (usually followed by a cathartic cry). Between Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s melancholy chemistry, the singular force of confidently neurotic nature that is Sonoya Mizuno, and Justin Theroux and Sally Field s “special” parent–child relationships (truly something to behold), you feel for each character you meet. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. It may sound kind of heady, but trust us, it’s worth the trip.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 6.5 hoursPicked By: Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation LeadTerrace House: Boys & Girls in the City What It Is: A reality series documenting the real lives of six roommates in Japan. Why You Should Watch It: For those who hate traditional reality TV and want insight into Japanese culture, this is your show. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of love triangles and conflict, but it’s more civilized. It’s the ultimate comfort watch! When you catch up with this season, there’s previous Terrace House series (“Boys and Girls in the City” and “Aloha State”) to enjoy!Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: There are 42 episodes available from the most recent season, all around 30 to 40 minutes each — and it runs through 52! The time commitment is A LOT, but SO worth it.Picked By: Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of ProductionHappy! 84%What It Is: Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Nick (Christopher Meloni), a degenerate hit man and ex cop, gets beaten up by mobsters only to wake up in the hospital seeing a cheerful blue unicorn named Happy (Patton Oswalt). Nick learns Happy is the imaginary friend of a kidnapped little girl named Hailey, who is being held captive by a demented Santa Claus. Happy won’t stop bothering Nick until they find Hailey and bring her to safety. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode. Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. Happy! is not for the faint of heart and is truly made for fans of antiheroes. The casting is also particularly fun, as Meloni is the polar opposite of his Law Order: SVU character. Think: the crazy cook in Wet Hot American Summer, but darker and more twisted.Where to Watch: Netflix, SyfyCommitment: About 6.5 hoursPicked By: Jason Blagman, AssistantElite 97%What It Is: Rich, sexy Spanish teens clash with working-class students at their elite private school, leading to murder. Why You Should Watch It: Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies meets Skins meets Cruel Intentions meets The O.C. meets Veronica Mars meets well, basically every single other of the very best teen dramas for this Spanish-language soap-to-end-all-soaps. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and  will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Pro tip: If you don t speak Spanish, Netflix will usually default to the dubbed version. To avoid that travesty, and make sure you select the European Spanish audio track.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 8 hoursPicked By: BentleyHappy Valley 98%What It Is: A kind of Fargo for the South of England, Happy Valley focuses on policewoman Catherine Cawood’s (Sarah Lancashire) personal and professional lives in the struggling, drug-ridden town for which the series is named. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried. Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. Happy Valley is another Netflix title that didn t release a new season in 2018, but will in 2019, making now a great time to binge.Where to Watch: Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, VuduCommitment: 12 hoursPicked by: Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefPose 98%What It Is: A look inside the underground ball scene in the 1980s, made famous by the documentary Paris Is Burning, in which competitors from various “houses” walk, dance, and/or perform in drag to win big trophies and bigger boosts social stature. Why You Should Watch It: That Pose is genuinely groundbreaking – it features a largely transgender cast, many of whom have not acted professionally before – was reason enough for many to tune in when the Ryan Murphy series premiered on FX in 2018. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. Porter, nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is a series standout, along with Indya Moore, whose complex relationship with married boy from the ’burbs Stan (Evan Peters) will break your heart.Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango Now, FX+, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTubeCommitment: 10 hoursPicked by: Meares
This Week s Ketchup brings you another eight headlines from the world of film development news (those stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering up-and-coming titles like The New Gods, A Quiet Place 2, and Disney s Snow White. This WEEK S TOP STORYROBERT PATTINSON CONFIRMED FOR THE BATMAN (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Two weeks ago, the news broke that Twilight Saga star Robert Pattinson was in talks with Warner Bros. to star in The Batman (6/25/2021). That news, however, was watered down slightly by various whoa nelly stories that suggested Warner Bros. was still considering other stars (Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Armie Hammer) for the role in case Pattinson didn t ultimately sign on. Well, you can disregard all of those names now, because Variety has confirmed that Pattinson has indeed signed on with Warner Bros. to star in The Batman. Although no production start date has been announced yet, the studio is expected to start pre-production this summer (which suggests filming will start late this year or early 2020 at the absolutely latest). The Batman will be directed by Matt Reeves, who is coming off directing the two most recent Planet of the Apes movies. Although it hasn t yet been confirmed, the news also broke last week that the villains in The Batman may be Catwoman and the Penguin, suggesting echoes of 1992 s Batman Returns.Fresh Developments1. MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, WILL THE SPIDER-MAN DIRECTOR GET THE SNOW WHITE CALL?Aladdin is now in theaters and on top of the box office charts, The Lion King is coming this summer (7/19/2019), and both Mulan (3/27/2020) and Cruella (12/23/2020) are due next year. We re deep into Disney s ongoing slate of movies based on their classic animated films, and the number of truly popular films yet to be adapted is getting smaller every year. One of the remaining classics is 1937 s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Certified Fresh at 98%), Walt Disney s first animated feature film. Disney may have slowed down plans for a live action Snow White to separate their remake from Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, but those 2012 films are now seven years in the past. With that possibly in mind, Walt Disney Pictures is now developing their live action Snow White, and director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 500 Days of Summer) is in talks for the job. Screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary, The Girl on the Train) is in talks to adapt the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, which will incorporate new songs by La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.2. AUDIENCES WILL RETURN TO A QUIET PLACE TWO MONTHS EARLIER(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)When A Quiet Place was released on April 6, 2018, the thrilling trailers helped it attract a surprisingly big opening box office weekend of .2 million, which was almost three times its production budget. Paramount Pictures was quick to schedule a sequel for next May (5/15/2020), and the studio signed John Krasinski to return as director, once again working with his wife Emily Blunt. (Batman Begins star Cillian Murphy will also be co-starring in the sequel.) Paramount delivered more good news for A Quiet Place fans this week, as the studio has bumped the sequel up two months to March 20, 2020, which is just two weeks shy of two years after the first film. The A Quiet Place sequel is now scheduled for the week after The Invisible Man and Godzilla vs Kong (3/13/2020), and the week before Disney s Mulan (3/27/2020).3. BATMAN COMIC BOOK WRITER ADAPTING THE NEW GODS (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Paramount Pictures)Back in 2015, there was a period when Marvel Studios was talking to Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) about possibly directing last year s Black Panther. She obviously didn t take the job (Ryan Coogler did), but within a month of its release, DuVernay landed a job at Warner Bros. to direct a movie based on DC Comics The New Gods. We haven t heard much about New Gods in the year since, but it s still in active development with the news this week that WB has hired comic book writer Tom King to adapt the last few decades of New Gods comics into a single movie. King s comic book work includes Mister Miracle (potentially one of DuVernay s New Gods) and DC s current weekly Batman series. The premise and cast of DuVernay s New Gods isn t yet known, but the director has Tweeted in the past that Big Barda (Mister Miracle s wife) is her favorite superhero.4. HARRISON FORD S TOP CHOICE TO REPLACE HIM AS INDIANA JONES IS NOBODY (Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Director Steven Spielberg is currently filming his remake of West Side Story (12/18/2020), but he s still attached to direct the fifth Indiana Jones movie, which remains scheduled for July 9, 2021. That also happens to be four days before Harrison Ford s birthday, July 13, 2021, when he will turn 79. So it s extremely likely that Ford will not be returning for an Indiana Jones 6. Probably with that in mind, Ford was asked this week who he thinks should be cast as the next Indiana Jones, to which he replied, Nobody! Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones. When I m gone, he s gone. It s easy. Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) has been mentioned in the past as a possible replacement, but Ford appeared to confuse his Chris P. movie stars, saying, This is a hell of a way to tell Chris Pine this. I m sorry, man. (Unless of course, Chris Pine from Star Trek has also been in talks for the role. Not impossible.)5. MGM KNOWS HOW TO SELL A CONTRADICTION: BOY GEORGE BIOPIC IN THE WORKS (Photo by Lee/Everett Collection)Following the phenomenal box office numbers of nearly a billion dollars (3 million globally) for last year s Bohemian Rhapsody, there is obviously a strong argument to be made that there is an audience thirsty for musical biopics driven by the right songs, the right personalities, and the right stories. Elton John is testing that theory this weekend as the executive producer of Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 90%), which tells John s own life story. Something else that Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman also have in common, besides just being musical biopics, is their subjects sexuality. MGM is now developing a musical biopic about the life of British singer Boy George of the 1980s pop group Culture Club, whose hits included Karma Chameleon, I ll Tumble 4 Ya, and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? MGM s Boy George biopic will be written and directed by Sacha Gervasi, wh

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Deadpool 3, The Suicide Squad, a Spike Lee Viagra musical (yes, really), and a pair of ensemble thrillers. This WEEK S TOP STORYDEADPOOL 3 MOVES FORWARD AT MARVEL STUDIOSRyan FujitaniIt s now been over a year and a half since Disney officially acquired the film and TV properties of the former 20th Century Fox, which included the various Marvel titles that had previously been at Fox, like Fantastic Four and everything-X-Men-related. Although there have been the expected rumors and mentions at San Diego Comic-Con, we hadn t officially heard of any of the Fox/Marvel titles moving forward through the usual development process at Marvel Studios, but we now know which movie has that distinction first. Marvel Studios has officially hired the screenwriting sisters team of Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin (Bob s Burgers, The Great North) to start work on the Deadpool 3 screenplay, with Ryan Reynolds attached to reprise his role as the merc with a mouth. Reportedly, Marvel has been meeting with writers pitching their Deadpool 3 ideas for about a month, with the Molyneux sisters eventually pitching the perfect fit [Marvel] wanted. Although no premise has been announced yet, the character might be the best choice of all the Fox titles to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe first because of his frequent ability to break the fourth wall, both in the comics and in the movies (as in, he might be the character most aware of possible alternate realities, a la Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). It s not yet known if other Deadpool 2 co-stars like Zazie Beetz as Domino or Josh Brolin as Cable might also appear in Deadpool 3, or whether, for example, anyone in the MCU might notice how much Cable looks like Thanos. There is no release date for Deadpool 3, but given the various COVID-19-related delays, it probably won t be until sometime in 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.Other Top Headlines1. LADY GAGA WILL BOOK A SEAT ON BRAD PITT S BULLET TRAIN(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty Images)Brad Pitt has been attached for a while now to star in the action thriller Bullet Train (based on the 2010 Japanese novel Maria Beetle) for Sony Pictures, but this week, the film s cast expanded quite a bit, revealing it might be similar in style to 1970s ensemble disaster movies like Airport and The Towering Inferno. The latest addition to Bullet Train is singer-turned-actress Lady Gaga, who is probably the biggest star of the group added this week, but she s expected to have a smaller supporting role. Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz also joined the cast, but likewise, her role isn t known. Another superhero movie co-star, Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), also joined Bullet Train this week. Finally, there s also TV s Masi Oka (Heroes, Hawaii-Five-0), likewise in an unknown role. Other members of the Bullet Train ensemble will include Logan Lerman, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Marvel s Quicksilver), Brian Tyree Henry (from Atlanta, as is Zazie Beetz), and Andrew Koji (Storm Shadow in the upcoming Snake Eyes movie). Bullet Train will be directed by David Leitch, who s coming off a hot streak that includes Atomic Blonde (Certified Fresh at 78%), Deadpool 2 (Certified Fresh at 84%), and Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 67%).2. HE GOT GAME: SPIKE LEE TO DIRECT VIAGRA MUSICAL(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)First discovered in 1989 as a possible treatment for chest pain, Pfizer introduced the prescription drug sildenafil under the brand name Viagra in 1998 as a medication to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It may have been inevitable that we would eventually get a movie about the invention of Viagra, but few could have guessed that when we did, it would be a musical co-written and directed by Spike Lee. Lee will adapt the screenplay with screenwriter Kwame Kwei-Armah (TV s Walter s War, Elmina s Kitchen) from the 2018 Esquire article All Rise: The Untold Story of The Guys Who Launched Viagra (which you can read right here). (One reason the musical might currently be untitled is that the title All Rise was recently taken by a CBS courtroom drama.) The original songs and music will be written by the team of Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, the creators of the rock musical Passing Strange. In a statement too long to fully quote here, Lee addressed his excitement about this project by frequently using his Shift key: So Finally Going Into My 4th Decade As A Filmmaker I Will Be Directing A DANCIN’,ALL SINGIN’ MUSICAL Spike Lee Joint And I Can’t Wait. My Moms Has Been Waiting TOO!!! And Dats Da Rodgers And Hammerstein Truth, Ruth. 3. THE MYSTERY GENRE REVIVAL CONTINUES WITH NEW SAOIRSE RONAN MOVIE (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)Two of 2017 s Best Picture nominees (amid other nominations) at the 90th Annual Academy Awards were Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and this week, two of the stars of those films were announced to star in a new film together. Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, and David Oyelowo (Selma) have all signed on to star in an untitled murder mystery thriller from Searchlight Pictures to be directed by British TV director Tom George. The movie will be set in 1950s London, where a Hollywood film producer is trying to adapt a popular play until members of the crew start getting murdered, with Rockwell and Ronan playing the cops investigating the crimes. Whatever this movie ends up being titled, it seems easily grouped together with other recent movies like Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express as part of a whodunit revival, to which we will soon be able to add the Death on the Nile remake, starring Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, and Letitia Wright (Black Panther).4. SYLVESTER STALLONE CONFIRMED FOR THE SUICIDE SQUAD(Photo by Marvel Studios)Although they were only shown together briefly in the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 featured Sylvester Stallone, Michelle Yeoh, Ving Rhames, and the voice of Miley Cyrus as a team representative of the original 1970s Guardians of the Galaxy team.(It s a long story, but the team we know from the movies with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket, et al. wasn t introduced in the comics until 2008.) At the time, it was teased that director James Gunn hoped that Stallone and crew would appear again in a future Marvel Studios movie, but as it turns out, we won t have to wait for that movie to see Stallone in a James Gunn movie. Gunn confirmed on Instagram over the weekend that Sylvester Stallone has joined the cast of the DC Comics soft reboot of The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), although the nature of his role, which might be fairly minor, wasn t revealed. Stallone is joining a massive ensemble cast that includes John Cena, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and of course, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. It s not yet known when James Gunn will be able to start filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 for Marvel, but with the COVID-19 pandemic delays, it s unlikely the film could be released before 2023.On an Apple device? Ryan FujitaniIt was Universal week at the holiday box office, with two new films from the studio and a third from last week still leading the way. Only one of them is currently available on streaming too. Certainly there is some focus on the big franchise crossing a milestone in pandemic-record time, but the more hopeful story may be the studio’s acquired franchise showing that family films could be on the rise. Or that nobody realized it was also available for free on Peacock.King of the Crop: F9 Pumps Its Brakes but Still Leads the PackIt was definitely a family kind of weekend all around, with BBQs, fireworks, and the Toretto gang holding on to its #1 spot at the box office, though it was a good news/bad news situation. Starting with the obvious good is that F9 cleared 0 million in just eight days. That’s a full week better than Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and about 10 weeks faster than it took Godzilla vs. Kong. Exclusive company to be sure, though F9 would certainly like to join the ranks of its predecessors and set new milestones for the box office going forward.Making million this weekend is almost million better than A Quiet Place Part II’s second go-round. The big difference is that Quiet debuted on a holiday weekend with .5 million and fell to .2 million. If F9’s million start last week was even more impressive, then we must also conclude that barely beating Quiet in week two with a Monday holiday is less so. Nearly 6 million through Monday is still nothing to sneeze at during these times but the 10-day total of 7 million is putting F9 further on course with the fourth entry, Fast Furious, than any films since. (Hobbs Shaw excluded.) The reunion of Vin Diesel Paul Walker in that fourth film had grossed 6.4 million by its tenth day, the result of a .2 million second (non-holiday) weekend. F9 does have the summer weekday advantage in its favor (F F opened in April) which could be the difference in getting over the 5 million that #4 grossed. However, anything under 6 million would still be a + million drop for The Fate of the Furious’ final gross. Still, F9 has become the highest-grossing film worldwide during the pandemic with over 1 million. The Top Ten And Beyond: The Boss Baby and The Forever Purge Complete a Universal Sweep of the Top ThreeWhen it was announced that Universal was putting The Boss Baby: Family Business on its Peacock service the same day as its theatrical release, it appeared to be another white flag that the studio had recognized the limited returns currently of the family market. Lo and behold, the film still managed to gross .3 million over the weekend and an estimated million through Monday. That is still a far cry from the .1 million the original film opened to in 2017, but aside from the “PG-13” Cruella (.4 million) this is the best true family opening to date since last year’s Onward, which opened just a week before everything started getting shut down. It should also surpass Peter Rabbit 2’s total by next weekend. That’s the half-full version of the opening. The half-empty one is imagining what could have been achieved without the streaming option that costs nothing more beyond a Peacock subscription, which starts as low as a month. An even darker timeline might wonder just how many families subscribed to the service this week just to get The Boss Baby sequel. The other Universal title taking up residence in the top 3 this week is The Forever Purge (aka Supposedly The Last Purge.) This entry had the lowest start yet with .7 million over the weekend. The .8 million estimated through Monday is a full million less than the .23 million that The First Purge (aka the last Purge film aka the fourth one) did in its first four days after opening on Weds, July 4 in 2018. Nevertheless that film still outgrossed the original 2013 film’s .47 million with .48 million. All of the Purge films grossed between -80 million; this one may be hopeful to top out somewhere around -45 million.Everything is under million from here, but leading the pack of that group once again is A Quiet Place Part II, which is now headed to over 0 million possibly by next weekend. It should at least have the distinction of being the first film during the pandemic to hit that milestone while also surpassing last year’s Sonic The Hedgehog to become the second-highest grossing film (to only Bad Boys For Life) in 2020-21. F9 will make a run to claim that spot but it will not happen by next weekend, and if it continues to drop fast, do not be shocked if John Krasinski’s sequel keeps the race close.Down in tenth place is a nice story with Janicza Bravo’s Zola from A24, grabbing .2 million over the weekend and million since opening last Wednesday. The Sundance favorite from 2020 opened in 1,468 theaters compared to 1,433 for its fellow Sundance ’20 competitor, The Courier, which made .19 million in its first five days of release and ended up grossing .6 million. Certified Fresh at 86%, Zola has the tenth best score among wide releases of 2021 and is estimated at .44 million through MondayOn The Vine: Marvel s First Big Screen Outing of Phase FourThe film that was supposed to open more than a year ago finally arrives in theaters. Marvel’s Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and David Harbour will hope to move the box office to the next level before August’s own big comic book film gives it a go. But will the Premium Access availability on Disney+ draw enough away from theaters to make this one of the lower-grossing films of the MCU?Full List of Box Office Results: July 2-5
