So instead of the Great Eye of the film series, he will need to have a humanoid, often Elvish, shape. Sauron is a very active participant in the events of the Second Age, and not just in creating the Rings of Power, so he will need to be played by an on-screen actor.Early on, Sauron began building an army of Orcs, loyal Men, and other creatures. He even controlled territory in the southern region of Middle-earth before Númenóreans began establishing settlements on its shores. Skirmishes were inevitable, leading to Númenor taking up more and more of its resources in a battle against Sauron until, after hundreds of years, they raided his home in Mordor and physically took him prisoner.Of course, because Sauron was a master manipulator dedicated to perverting all Eru and the Valar established, he allowed himself to be taken back to Númenor. Once there, he began a campaign to sway the king, Ar-Pharazôn, to his side. After a number of years, Morgoth cults — with Sauron as their chief priest — operated in the open and Sauron became a key adviser to the king, promising faith in Morgoth would allow them to step foot in Aman and obtain immortality. Those still loyal to the Valar eventually decamped to Middle-earth, allowing Sauron’s scheme to come to fruition — much to the despair of the Númenóreans.Oh, also, he did all of this while leaving the One Ring back in Mordor. The Fall of Númenor is one of the great stories in Tolkien’s mythology (although many also enjoy the incomplete Second Age tale “The Mariner’s Wife”). Since it takes place over a great span of years, there is room for the series to build up characters such as Ar-Pharazôn and Elendil, the Númenórean who defied Sauron and helped establish the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth.We Will See Some Familiar Characters(Photo by Warner Bros.)Thanks to the way Tolkien mapped out the longevity of certain characters, there are a handful of well-known Lord of the Rings figures around to witness the events of the Second Age and the Fall of Númenor. Though nothing indicates any of the film series actors will reprise their roles, the Second Age setting allows room for some familiar characters.Elrond Half-elven (played by Hugo Weaving in Jackson s films), as his name implies, is a direct descendant of the First Age unions between Men and Elves who chose the fate of Elves. It makes him directly related to the kings of Númenor. During this time, he and Gil-Galad, the High Elven king in Middle-earth, had their own problems with Sauron. They saw the Númenóreans as allies — at least, until Sauron corrupted the seafarers. Nonetheless, it is possible we will see Elrond implore the Númenóreans to restore their ties with the Valar. With news of Clark s (pictured above) casting, Galadriel is certain to appear, which makes Celeborn (Marton Csokas in the films) highly likely. Both hail from the First Age, with Galadriel possessing a firsthand account of an Elvish migration from Aman to Middle-earth. Celeborn’s history is a little more imprecise, as Tolkien could never decide if he was born in Aman or Middle-earth. But both are, by human standards, impossibly old and witnesses to just about every historic event in Middle-earth up until they departed with Frodo to Aman at the end of The Lord of the Rings. As with Elrond, their concerns are local (with Sauron’s forces encroaching on their kingdom by the River Anduin), but it is always possible they will be around to sow the seeds of the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, the epic battle that could very well close out the series as a whole a few years from now.And Some New Faces As Well(Photo by Daybreak Game Company)Should the series continue beyond Númenor’s downfall, it is possible audiences could see two of the five Wizards arrive in Middle-earth. Though the Fall of Númenor left the Valar estranged from the world, they sent five Maiar spirits in the shapes of frail old men to rally the people of Middle-earth against Sauron (who survived the Fall, only losing his “fair” appearance). While most of the Wizards arrived in Middle-earth a thousand years into the Third Age, the two Blue Wizards Tolkien never really developed may have arrived during the Second Age, just after the Fall. Only mentioned in his unfinished tales, the pair quickly made their way to the East and either succumbed to Sauron’s influence or died as they failed to sway the Easterlings away from the Dark Lord. Presuming Amazon’s deal with the Tolkien estate includes unfinished material like the tale of the wizards, they would be ideal characters to utilize in the series. They could be villains, fallen heroes, or anything in between.Another character worthy of inclusion is the legendary Elf hero Glorfindel. While he “died” during the Fall of Gondolin in the First Age of Middle-earth, he eventually returned from Aman, possibly alongside the Blue Wizards, to aid both men and Elves in their struggle against Sauron during the Second Age. He makes a notable appearance early in The Lord of the Rings as he helps deliver Frodo to Rivendell. But after attending the Council of Elrond, Glorfindel drops out of the narrative until Aragorn’s wedding to Arwen. While other on-screen adaptations have substituted recurring characters for Glorfindel rather than introduce a new character to their stories — Jackson replaced him with Arwen (played by Liv Tyler), giving her an early heroic moment, while animated film director Ralph Bakshi subbed in Legolas — he is an interesting character out in the wide world during the period indicated on the map and fans would be thrilled to see him. (Orlando Bloom played Legolas in Jackson s films.)Other characters definitely alive at the time include Tom Bombadil (pictured above as portrayed in the Lord of the Rings Online video game), who himself suggests he’s the oldest consciousness in the world, and Legolas’ father Thranduil (played by Lee Pace in Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy), who has a pretty interesting story in his own right. The Devices of the Enemy(Photo by Warner Bros.)As Sauron assails all of Middle-earth in this period, he has vast resources of Orcs and Men at his disposal. But fans of the films will recognize his phantom lieutenants, the Nazgul, as a significant part of this army.If the series centers on Sauron’s time in Númenor, the nine kings of Men will already have their rings. For much of the Second Age they enjoyed the wealth and prosperity Sauron promised the rings would give them, but they were his wraiths by the time he left with Ar-Pharazôn. Presumably, they kept his affairs in order even as his capture halted the war against the people of Middle-earth.Should the series continue beyond the fall, they could become active antagonists against the likes of Elrond, Galadriel, and Elendil’s sons Isildur and Anárion — conflicts that will eventually lead to the Last Alliance.
The wait is almost over! Vin Diesel and his family — now including John Cena — are back for F9, the latest installment of the Fast Furious franchise, and it’s finally arriving in theaters on June 25. More than a month ahead of that release, though, a number of critics have had the chance to see the sequel and were permitted to share their thoughts on social media. As you’re no doubt expecting, this movie is reportedly filled with ridiculous action to the point that it’s potentially too silly in its physics-defying spectacle. Does it have any script problems? Who cares, right? Especially when Han (Sung Kang) is back and properly honored. Regardless, it’s still fun seeing the positive buzz on this highly anticipated blockbuster. Here’s what critics are saying about F9:How does F9 compare to the rest of the franchise?F9 is outrageous and one of the biggest, baddest additions to the Fast family franchise. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsF9 was AMAZING! Justin Lin s return is a high ranking entry. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendIt s a TON OF FUN!! This is ultimate Fast Furious. Molly Freeman, Screen RantF9 is grandiose fun. Bombastic, brazen, bold. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionF9 is by far the biggest and most ridiculous Fast Furious yet. [But it’s] miles from the precision of Fast Five or the fun of Tokyo Drift. David Ehrlich, IndieWireThis is one of the weakest entries in the franchise, probably near the bottom. If they continue this, I honestly hope they are spin-offs like Hobbs and Shaw, which I enjoyed much more. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s the worst FF movie to date. John Campea, The John Campea Show(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)How is the cast?Vin Diesel and John Cena are terrific. Tyrese is the stealth MVP. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionTyrese steals the whole god damn show. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsAlso HAN IS STILL GREAT!!! Molly Freeman, Screen RantHow is the action? The action continues to be pure bonkers adrenaline…absolute blockbuster bliss. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSupercharged stunts and ambitious action set pieces mix with combustible soap opera dramatics. It’s a cacophony [of] car-crunching mayhem. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAnything is possible, there are surprises at every turn, the stunts are at their best. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsThe action feels fresh and innovative, if not necessarily bigger. Molly Freeman, Screen Rant(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Does the plot match the spectacle? The story actually gets some exciting depths. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendIt weaves in John Cena s Jakob in a smart way that builds on the theme of family, giving it some real heart. Molly Freeman, Screen RantIt takes a while to rev up but won me over by the end. David Ehrlich, IndieWireIt’s overly long, convoluted. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentDoes it get too ridiculous? The Fast movies 4-8 work well because they embrace the ridiculousness. But at some point it s way too much. The couple of moments of laughs and charm are totally overwhelmed by the eye rolling nonsense. John Campea, The John Campea ShowF9 gets busy (too busy)… in its outer-space sequence, flirts with jumping the shark. Owen Gleiberman, VarietySo ridiculously over the top that it borders on being insulting rather than fun and entertaining. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentEverything is over-the-top, and I loved every second of it. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsI found myself giggling at the sheer audacity of a few of the big set pieces and some other stuff. It’ll absolutely make you forget your troubles for a few hours. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionHearing other people laugh around me when some ridiculously over the top action happened was the best part. Thank you science. Steve Weintraub, Collider(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)So it s worth seeing in a theater? If you feel safe going I definitely definitely definitely suggest seeing it on the big screen cause wow wow wow. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsMAN I MISSED GOING TO THE MOVIES. and Fast Furious 9 was definitely a fun one to be my first movie back in theaters!! Molly Freeman, Screen RantDo we need to watch all the previous movies ahead of time?I m glad I watched all eight main Fast Furious movies before seeing F9 — the movie rewards longtime fans in some cool ways. But I m gonna give myself a headache trying to make the franchise timeline make sense! You just gotta roll with it! Molly Freeman, Screen Rant[F9 delivers] satisfying answers to some important questions. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSo the franchise is still going strong? With Justin Lin at the helm it feels like things are finally moving in the right direction. David Ehrlich, IndieWire[There’s] plenty of gas left in the tank. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThis franchise has officially run out of gas. Just over five years ago at the 88th Academy Awards, Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant (Certified Fresh at 78%), which also won Best Cinematography and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and this week, Iñárritu was finally able to start filming his first feature film in the five-plus years since. The project, called Limbo, is now filming on location in Mexico City. Iñárritu also wrote the film, which doesn t yet have an official synopsis, except that it explores the political and social modernity of Mexico. Iñárritu s choice to film in Mexico City following his Hollywood success with The Revenant could also be compared to Alfonso Cuaron s Roma (Certified Fresh at 95%), which was filmed in Mexico City following his own Hollywood success with Gravity (Certified Fresh at 95%). No casting announcements have been made yet for Limbo.Other Top Headlines1. J.J. ABRAMS HIRES FIRST FEMALE STAR TREK FEATURE SCREENWRITER(Photo by Paramount Pictures)It was just last week that producer J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company hired award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to work on the new Superman reboot (featuring an actor of color as the lead, for a historic first). This week, Abrams moved forward with another first as Bad Robot has hired screenwriter Kalinda Vasquez to work on the next Star Trek feature film. This project should not be confused with the Star Trek that Quentin Tarantino was announced as partnering with Abrams and Bad Robot in 2017 (as that one appears to have cooled down in the years since). If Vasquez s work on this project makes it to production, she will become the first woman ever to write a Star Trek feature film. In addition to serving as executive producer on shows like Runaways, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, and Fear the Walking Dead, Kalinda Vasquez has also written episodes of all of those shows, plus four episodes of Prison Break and seven episodes of Nikita. It is not yet known if her Star Trek project will introduce a new cast or use one of the previous casts (like say, the Kelvin crew of Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, etc.) Paramount Pictures does not currently have any Star Trek feature films on the studio s release schedule.2. ANNETTE BENING TO PORTRAY RECORD-BREAKING SWIMMER DIANA NYAD (Photo by Suzanne Tenner/©Focus Features)Diana Nyad is a record-breaking long distance swimmer whose accomplishments include swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, swimming from Jamaica to Florida, and swimming around the island of Manhattan in under 8 hours. Nyad s amazing life is now set to be adapted as the biopic Nyad, with four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening attached to star. Nyad will mark the narrative feature film directorial debut of the team of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for their 2018 documentary Free Solo (Certified Fresh at 98%), which depicted a similar form of endurance sport (free solo mountain climbing). Nyad is being adapted from her autobiography Find a Way, with filming expected to start sometime this summer.3. RUSSELL CROWE TO STAR AS ABSTRACT ARTIST MARK ROTHKO (Photo by © Universal Pictures)There have obviously been dozens of biopics about famous painters, but so far, we have relatively few to date about abstract painters (Pollock, Certified Fresh at 80% starring Ed Harris, is a notable exception). That field will soon expand as the life of artist Mark Rothko is about to be portrayed by Russell Crowe in Rothko. Mark Rothko is best known for his color field paintings of large fields of bright colors in squares or rectangles. Rothko will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy). The Rothko cast will include Irish actress Aisling Fraciosi (as Rothko s daughter), Jared Harris, Michael Stuhlbarg, and the director s husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro from Marvel s Avengers: Age of Ultron). Adapted from the book The Legacy of Rothko by Lee Seldes, Rothko will focus on the protracted legal dispute between Kate Rothko and the painter’s estate executors and the directors of his gallery, Marlborough Fine Art, which you can read more about here.4. MELISSA MCCARTHY TO PORTRAY MAJOR MARVEL VILLAIN IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER SORT OF (Photo by Hopper Stone/©Columbia Pictures)Some of the funniest surprises in Taika Waititi s Thor: Ragnarok (Certified Fresh at 93%) came early in the film when we first saw some Asgardian actors depicting the events of earlier Thor movies, including Matt Damon as Loki, Sam Neill as Odin, and Chris Hemsworth s brother Luke Hemsworth as Thor. There has been a fair amount of new coverage of actors like Matt Damon returning to Australia for filming of the fourth movie, Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), but this week, we actually heard about someone new. Several photos have emerged online this week of comedic actress Melissa McCarthy in costume on the sets in Australia as the villainous character Hela, as portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok, with the other actors-playing-actors like Matt Damon also on set with McCarthy. In similar news, we also learned this week that the upcoming sports comedy sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy (7/6/2021) will also feature cameo appearances by some of Warner Bros other film properties, including Batman, Mad Max, and Casablanca.5. THIS WEEK IN MUSICAL BIOPICS: BOB MARLEY, AND ROBBIE WILLIAMS (AS A MONKEY?) (Photo by Everett Collection)Although both films are now a few years old, the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 89%) continue to have a ripple effect on other musical biopics getting produced. That includes musical biopic projects which have languished in development for years, or in some cases, decades. The life story of famed reggae musician Bob Marley is one such example. Paramount Pictures is finally getting closer to production with the news this week that the studio has hired director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who comes to the Bob Marley biopic even as he continues work on another biographical film, King Richard, about the father (played by Will Smith) of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In a sad coincidence, the movement on the Bob Marley biopic comes in the same week that saw the passing of Marley s musical partner Bunny Wailer at the age of 73. British pop star Robbie Williams is also getting a biopic called Better Man to be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). In a bizarre revelation, this week, Deadline reported that the role of Robbie Williams will be portrayed by a CGI monkey, apparently, quite seriously.6. DUNGEONS DRAGONS MOVIE CASTS DETECT EVIL SPELL ON HUGH GRANT (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Actor Jeremy Irons has had a film career with many great heights, but one of his lowest lows may have come in 2000, when he starred as the evil villain in the first Dungeons Dragons feature film (Rotten at 10%). One has to speculate that Hugh Grant is hoping for a better result with his decision this week to take the role of the main villain (called Forge Fletcher) in the new Dungeons Dragons movie (5/27/2022). Sophia Lillis, who has recently starred as both Nancy Drew and Beverly in the IT movies, has also take a role as a character named Doric (neither of these names seem to point towards popular characters from existing D D stories). This new Dungeons Dragons reboot is being written and directed by the team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also collaborated on Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%). It is not yet known if the Dungeons Dragons movie will be set entirely in a fantasy world, or if some part of it might also depict real world players. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis are joining a cast which already includes Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith.7. WRINKLE IN TIME STAR STORM REID MAY GET LOST IN SEARCHING 2 (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although it wasn t a box office blockbuster, the independent social media mystery drama Searching (Certified Fresh at 92%) was still a surprise hit relative to its budget. Jon Cho and Michelle La starred as father and daughter in the first Searching, but apparently for the upcoming sequel, a new cast is being sought as the formula will be applied to a new family and setting. We don t know specifically how different or similar the sequel s premise will be, so we have relatively little to guess on, but we can report that 17 year old actress Storm Reid is now in talks for a lead role in Searching 2. Reid made her feature film debut in 12 Years a Slave, had the lead role in A Wrinkle in Time, and is also one of Zendaya s co-stars in HBO s Euphoria.8. HELLO KITTY FINALLY GETTING HER BIG SHOT AT THE MEOW-VIES (Photo by Saban International courtesy Everett Collection)The Japanese design company Sanrio has had over 45 years of success with their popular Hello Kitty character, including in the United States, but for the most part, attempts to carry Hello Kitty over in formats like TV or the movies have not taken off outside of Japan. Back in October of 2019, we reported that New Line Cinema had acquired the film rights to Hello Kitty, but we hadn t heard much since then. This week, we finally got confirmation that the studio is actively developing a Hello Kitty feature film that will combine live action and animation (like this week s Tom and Jerry). New Line Cinema has hired two directors for their Hello Kitty movie: Jennifer Coyle and Leo Matsuda. Coyle s credits as director include 23 episodes of DC Super Hero Girls and 13 episodes of Bob s Burgers, while Matsuda s credits are mostly as an animator or story artist on projects like The Simpsons Movie, Wreck-It Ralph, and Zootopia.9. JONATHAN MAJORS TO STAR IN MILITARY DRAMA 892(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)One of the shows that premiered right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic when many people were hungry for something to binge was HBO s spooky Lovecraft Country, starring Jonathan Majors. In the months since, Majors was able to translate that show s success to a new gig at Marvel Studios as one of the company s most prolific super villains, Kang the Conqueror, in the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (TBA 2022). This week, Majors signed on for another project, which will be a drama called 892 about a marine war veteran who suffers from PTSD. In somewhat related news, following recent allegations, rapper-turned-actor T.I. will not be returning for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania after co-starring in the first two Ant-Man movies. It is unclear if this was always the plan, or if Marvel Studios is making the change based on the allegations against T.I. and his wife Tameka Tiny Harris. Likewise, we also don t know if the other Ant-Man supporting characters played by Michael Peña and David Dastmalchian will be returning or not.On an Apple device? t, and I spoke to Joey s dad, actually, who is a doctor in Montreal. He spoke to me about what people go through, and I hadn t realized the impact that Purdue Pharma [which introduced OxyContin to the market] had on the amount of people whose lives were lost. [It’s] pretty awful to think about the knowledge that they already had about the addictive qualities of these medications and the fact that they were not being honest about it. It s pretty horrific to learn about that. And as I said, I hadn t really been aware of the numbers before. So for me it was very eye-opening, and then infuriating.Rotten Tomatoes: The relationship that you have with Alex Wolff s character in the beginning of the film is so beautifully rendered and important when we consider his journey in the movie. Had you worked with Alex before and how did you guys create that genuine-feeling mother-son intimacy?Campbell: I had never met Alex before we got on set together and started our first scene. I think the fact that I m a mother of two boys really helped me. It helped me be aware of what that dynamic would be already and added an understanding of how devastating this journey would be with my son if I were to go through that myself. And Alex was very, very willing to be vulnerable, and it was so important for this character, and he really went there. He was so committed to it. I think we were really glad when we realized in that first scene that we were both going to allow ourselves to be vulnerable and that we could be; we were safe in that place together.Rotten Tomatoes: We can’t let you go without asking about the upcoming Scream movie. Have you been approached about playing Sidney Prescott again?Campbell: We’re having conversations – I have been approached about it. The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out…. We’re negotiating, so we’ll see.The two directors wrote me a very touching letter about Wes Craven and how he was such an inspiration to them and how they really want to honor him, and that meant a great, great deal to me. So, we’ll see. Hopefully we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it.Rotten Tomatoes: Are you excited about the possibility of returning to the franchise?Campbell: I’m so grateful for these films… I love Sidney Prescott. It’s always fun for me to step back in her shoes, and it’s always fun for me to see the cast come back and make one of these films again and try to make another good one.Castle In the Ground is available to rent or buy on demand May 15, 2020.

Adapted from the children s literature character that first appeared in the 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington, the 2014 film Paddington received a Certified Fresh score of 97% and its 2017 sequel Paddington 2 still holds the record as the film with the most reviews to be Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer. Paul King, who wrote and directed the first two films, has said that he would not be directing a Paddington 3 if one was to ever happen, and we already know that King s next film will be the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka for St. Patrick s Day, 2023. Combined, the two Paddington movies earned over 0 million worldwide (0 million and 5 million). No casting announcements for Paddington 3 have been made yet, but the film franchise s ensemble cast (not counting film-specific antagonists) includes Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, and the voices of Ben Whishaw (Paddington) and Imelda Staunton (Paddington s Aunt Lucy).Other Top Headlines1. DANIEL KALUUYA IN TALKS FOR REUNION WITH JORDAN PEELE(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)To date, Jordan Peele has only directed two feature films, but both Get Out (Certified Fresh at 98%) and Us (Certified Fresh at 93%) have been box office hits, with each coincidentally earning 5 million worldwide. Expectations are high, then for his untitled third film, which Universal Pictures is helping by calling it a horror event title scheduled for July 22, 2022. Jordan Peele is now getting his cast for that film together this week, with singer and actress Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee, Certified Fresh at 85%) being the first to officially be confirmed. Peele s Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya is also in talks for one of the film s leads, but his deal hasn t yet been finalized. Similarly, Fargo and Game Night star Jesse Plemons was also in talks for a role recently, but his deal fell apart due to a scheduling conflict (possibly because he also signed with Apple TV+ this week to star in Martin Scorsese s Killers of the Flower Moon).2. JOAQUIN PHOENIX TO STAR IN ARI ASTER S NEXT FILM(Photo by Warner Bros.)Jordan Peele isn t the only director who s recently had two critical hits with his first two horror films, as Ari Aster pulled off a similar feat with Hereditary (Certified Fresh at 89%) and Midsommar (Certified Fresh at 83%). For his third film, Aster has recruited four-time Academy Award nominee and recent winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor Joaquin Phoenix to star in a film called Disappointment Blvd. The exact genre for the A24 production is unclear, as the premise is described as an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time, which doesn t sound like a horror film, but this report describes the film as a surrealist horror film set in an alterate present. Joaquin Phoenix is expected to film Disappointment Blvd sometime later this year before moving on to star as Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott s Kitbag.3. NEW SUPERGIRL TO MAKE HER DEBUT IN THE FLASH (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)It s been 37 years since Helen Slater starred in the famously terrible Supergirl (Rotten at 9%), and in that time, Melissa Benoist has gone a long way toward making amends in the popular CW series Supergirl. That said, we re due to get yet another iteration of the character in the upcoming DCEU film The Flash. After director Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT) reportedly saw the auditions of over 425 actresses, the role of Supergirl in The Flash (11/4/2022) has gone to relative unknown Sasha Calle, who currently co-stars in the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. The 25-year-old Boston-born Colombian actress will also have the distinction of being the first Latina actress to portray Supergirl in any format (TV, animation, etc). The other 400+ actresses reportedly did not know what role they were auditioning for until very late in the process, at which point Sasha Calle had a chemistry reading with The Flash star Ezra Miller (over Zoom). It s not yet known in which other future DCEU films Calle might reprise her role as Supergirl. In related news, Marwan Kenzari, who co-starred as Jafar in Aladdin, has also joined the DCEU film Black Adam in an unknown role.4. PARAMOUNT TO REMAKE CLASSIC MUSICAL THE KING AND I (Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)In recent weeks, we ve heard about new efforts to remake both Breaklast at Tiffany s and The Wizard of Oz, and this week, we can add another classic from over 50 years ago to the list. There have been multiple adaptations of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I, or the true story that inspired it, but the most famous is the 1956 film starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. That film was produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox, but the remake rights have now landed at Paramount Pictures, which is partnering with Temple Hill, the production company behind recent movies like Love, Simon (Certified Fresh at 91%) and Happiest Season (Certified Fresh at 83%). The 1956 version of The King I received nine Academy Award nominations and won five: Best Actor (Yul Brynner), Best Color Art Direction, Best Color Costume Design, Best Score, and Best Sound Recording. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, but lost that year to Around the World in 80 Days. No writer or director is attached to the remake of The King and I yet, but Paramount is reportedly hoping to bring a contemporary perspective to the project and incorporate diversity and contrasting worldviews by incorporating real history and the musical into it. 5. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY TO BE REBOOTED BY HAPPY DEATH DAY SCREENWRITER (Photo by Paramount Pictures)As of 2021, it has now been six years since the sixth film in the Paranormal Activity horror franchise (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Rotten at 14%) was released in 2015. Paramount Pictures has been developing a seventh Paranormal Activity film since 2019, which has included scheduling it first for March 19, 2021, and then most likely delayed by COVID-19 for next year on March 4, 2022. As of this week, we now know that the seventh film will itself be a remake and/or reimagining described as an unexpected retooling of the franchise. Whatever form the seventh Paranormal Activity takes (such as, for example, whether it will still be a found footage film), the retooling will be directed by Will Eubank, whose previous work includes 2014 s The Signal (Fresh at 60%) and last year s Underwater (Rotten at 47%). Eubank will be working from a screenplay by Christopher Landon, who directed Happy Death Day (Fresh at 71%), and wrote and directed both Happy Death Day 2U (Fresh at 71%) and Freaky (Certified Fresh at 83%), all of which put a unique spin on various horror or science fiction tropes.6. REGINA KING TO STAR AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SHIRLEY CHISHOLM (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)In 1972, U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American to be a candidate for a major party s presidential nomination; she was recently portrayed by Uzo Aduba in the TV mini-series Mrs. America, but she also made movie news in November when Danai Gurira signed on to star in a biopic called The Fighting Shirley Chisholm. As it turns out, that s not the only Shirley Chisholm film in the works, as Regina King, who recently won her fourth Emmy for her work in HBO s Watchmen and her first Oscar for her role in Barry Jenkins If Beale Street Could Talk, and who also recently directed the historical drama One Night in Miami (Certified Fresh at 98%), which has been in awards conversations this year, is attached to another. King is officially attached to star as Chisholm in a biopic called Shirley (not to be confused with this biopic called Shirley) to be directed by John Ridley, who has experience in the genre as director of the 2013 Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is by My Side.7. ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT S THE ORIGINAL CASSIE FROM ANT-MAN (Photo by Ben Rothstein/©Marvel Studios)Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the first publication of the coming-of-age novel Are You There, God? It s Me, Margaret by children s literature author Judy Blume. Although there are certain details that haven t aged particularly well, the book remains an important landmark in coming-of-age fiction, despite never being adapted as a motion picture, but that s about to change. Abby Ryder Fortson, who was the original actress to play Scott Lang s daughter Cassie in the first two Ant-Man movies, has been cast as the title character Margaret, and Rachel McAdams has been cast as her mother. Are You There, God? It s Me, Margaret will be written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen, Certified Fresh at 94%) for Lionsgate and producer James L. Brooks. Lionsgate and Brooks reportedly won the right to adapt Judy Blume s novel after traveling to Florida to meet with Blume in a conference room that had been transformed into an 11-year-old girl s bedroom with pictures of executives as 11-year olds. 8. JAMES WAN S TRAIN TO BUSAN REMAKE FINDS ITS DIRECTOR(Photo by Well Go USA Entertainment)Last year s Academy Award Best Picture win for Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%) shone a new light on the South Korean film industry, but the country s film output is broad and includes many genres. For example, the 2015 zombie movie Train to Busan (Certified Fresh at 94%) was an international hit, and it received a sequel last year called Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula (Rotten at 53%). The title tells you exactly what the movie s hook is, as it centers on the passengers of a train who find themselves surrounded by a zombie apocalypse. Back in 2018, New Line Cinema announced an English-language remake of the film with James Wan on board as producer, but this week we learned that the film finally has its director in the form of Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us, Fresh at 91%), who is now in talks for the job. The English-language screenplay was adapted by Gary Dauberman, who has written several films for Wan s Conjuring Universe and who is also preparing to direct a remake of Stephen King s vampire story, Salem s Lot.9. DAISY RIDLEY TO STAR IN ABDUCTION THRILLER THE MARSH KING S DAUGHTER (Photo by Nicola Dove/©20th Century Fox Film Corporation)The world is still waiting on the sci-fi thriller Chaos Walking (3/5/2021) several years after Daisy Ridley was announced to star alongside Tom Holland, but this week, we learned about another new film for the former Star Wars franchise star. Ridley is now attached to star in the film adaptation of the psychological thriller novel The Marsh King s Daughter by author Karen Dionne. Ridley will play a woman who was kept hostage in a remote wilderness with her mother by her father, an infamous criminal called The Marsh King. The Marsh King s Daughter will be directed by Neil Burger, whose recent films have included the remake The Upside (Rotten at 42%), as well as all three films of the Divergent (Rotten at 41%) franchise. On an Apple device? Jerry Seinfeld Will Turn One of His Stand-Up Jokes Into a Netflix Movie About the Creation of Pop-TartsA movie about nothing? Kinda, but we still can’t wait for this one: expanding on a joke from his stand-up routine, Jerry Seinfeld will star in and direct Unfrosted, a Netflix movie all about the creation of Pop-Tarts, that classic breakfast toaster pastry. (Deadline)Seinfeld will also produce Unfrosted, which he wrote with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder. Production will begin next spring on the movie, which sparked from a joke the comedian told about the joy of discovering Pop-Tarts as a child. “How did they know that there would be a need for a frosted fruit-filled, heated rectangle in the same shape as the box it comes in, and with the same nutrition as the box it comes in?” Seinfeld mused. In 2012, Seinfeld deconstructed the joke, which he wrote across two years, and shared his joke-writing process (which famously involves yellow legal pads and Bic pens) in a New York Times video that hints at the comedic potential of Unfrosted. For the record, despite the movie’s title, we all agree that frosted Pop-Tarts are always the preferred Pop-Tarts, right?I May Destroy You, Unorthodox, Ted Lasso, and The Good Lord Bird Are Among the Year s Peabody Award Winners(Photo by Apple TV+)The Peabody Awards, for excellence in “storytelling that reflects the social issues and the emerging voices of our day,” were announced this week, and TV-related projects recognized for the 81st annual honors include Ted Lasso (Apple TV+), The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS), The Owl House on Disney Channel, The Good Lord Bird (Showtime), Unorthodox (Netflix), 76 Days (MTV), Whose Vote Counts on PBS, VICE on Showtime: Losing Ground (Showtime), I May Destroy You (HBO), La Llorona (Shudder), Collective (HBO Europe), Immigration Nation (Netflix), Crip Camp (Netflix), PBS NewsHour: Coverage of the COVID-19 Pandemic (PBS), Small Axe (Amazon Prime), The Cave (NatGeo), Welcome to Chechnya (HBO), ABC News 2020: Breona Taylor (ABC), PBS NewsHour: Desperate Journey (PBS), Cops and Robbers (Netflix), and Stillwater (Apple TV+). Though Kennedy spent most of her time talking about Star Wars’s place on Disney+, she did offer some updates on the feature film slate. Taika Waititi is still working on the script to his Star Wars film. “Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and … unique,” Kennedy said. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”pic.twitter.com/e3N00xCr5i Patty Jenkins (@PattyJenks) December 10, 2020But Kennedy surprised everyone by announcing Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins would direct the next Star Wars feature, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Set in a what Kennedy called a “future era of Star Wars,” it will tell the tale of the famed X-Wing fighter squadron. In a video Jenkins posted to her own Twitter account, she said the project takes inspiration from her father, a US fighter pilot who lost his life in service to the country. “It ignited a desire to turn all that tragedy and thrill into the greatest fighter pilot film of all time,” she explained. It is slated for release in December of 2023.Curiously, though, no mention was made of the film trilogy Rian Johnson is reportedly developing for Lucasfilm. Some Non Star Wars News from the Land of Lucas: Willow, Indy, and an Original(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Beyond Star Wars, Lucasfilm is also working on a handful of interesting projects.First, there is the Willow television series. Spearheaded by Solo: A Star Wars Story s Jonathan Kasdan and Arrow s Wendy Mericle, it will follow a new generation of heroes and a returning Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) on quest to save the realm. According to unconfirmed reports, Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaeny, and Erin Kellyman will lead the series as that younger generation of adventurers. Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon Chu will direct the pilot.Kennedy also confirmed the upcoming Indiana Jones film will be the last. Harrison Ford returns once last time as Dr. Henry Jones Jr. But in a series first, Steven Spielberg will hand the director duties off to Logan’s James Mangold. The choice of director also reflects the sense of finality developing around the project. But perhaps most exciting project touted is Lucasfilm’s first new concept in decades: the company intends to adapt City of Blood Bone by Tomi Adeyemi for the big screen. The story centers on a young African girl’s quest to restore magic to her forsaken people. While Lucasfilm will always be the Star Wars company, it is refreshing to see them look to new ideas. 20th Century Studios will act as a producing partner on the project.Lucasfilm s plans presented by Kennedy suggest a robust future for Star Wars and a big turnaround from the original intention to produce a new Star Wars film every year. Surprisingly, the streaming universe seems a better fit, although, we cannot wait until it is safe to see a Patty Jenkins X-Wing movie in a theater. Nonetheless, it is hard to ignore the hard shift to Star Wars as a home entertainment brand. Of course, we imagine generations of fans clutching their action figures and DVDs will find little to complain about in this expanded, streaming Star Wars future.January 2021 Update: This report was updated to clarify that The Mandalorian season 3 is not expected in 2021. And while Bassinger does have a background in gymnastics and would have loved to have been allowed to do more stunts, she acknowledges that it was safer to let her stunt double, Kristina Baskett, handle most of the heavy lifting. Bassinger admits that she did enjoy the days when she got to be harnessed into wires, such as a scene when she slides across the Staff in an early episode. But there were some things Bassinger purposefully avoided in an effort to make this Stargirl her own, such as opting not to watch Britt Irvin portrayal of the character on Smallville or Sarah Grey’s on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Both of those shows featured an older version of the character who was not the lead, while this iteration allows Bassinger to devote more time to developing Stargirl’s backstory.“I feel like playing younger characters is just more fun and, Courtney specifically, is like a optimistic funny character,” says Bassinger, who until now was mostly known for Nickelodeon shows like Bella and the Bulldogs and that network’s TV adaptation of School of Rock. “While a good dramatic scene is fun every once in a while, it s nice just to be more lighthearted, I feel like, on a day-to-day basis.”(Photo by DC Universe)Although Stargirl isn’t officially part of The CW’s “Arrowverse” collection of shows that include The Flash and Supergirl, fans did get a glimpse of some of these characters during the network’s elaborate Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover episodes, which aired this past winter and famously feature the heroes from other programs. Bassinger says there were talks of other crossover opportunities before the coronavirus pandemic shut down Hollywood this spring, but she doesn’t know how it will happen now – especially since her show’s chronology might not match up with the others’ (these programs rely on a multiverse theory, or the concept that infinite universes exist, and while Stargirl is part of Earth-1, not every character is). There’s also the issue with the title of her character. These shows run for years (The Flash, for example, is in its sixth season). Eventually, her character will grow up and leave high school. Does that mean her name may ever be changed to Starwoman?“I think she’ll always be Stargirl,” Bassinger says. “Like, even in the comics when she ages, she’s always Stargirl.”Stargirl premieres Monday, May 18 on DC Universe and has its broadcast premiere on The CW on Tuesday, May 19 at 8/7C.
me.Buzz, Woody, and the Gang Just Got Put Back In Their Box(Photo by Annapurna Pictures)“Well, I’m flabbergasted,” admitted Missing Link co-director Chris Butler when he accepted the award for Best Feature – Animated with co-director Arianne Sutner. So were we. This was Toy Story 4’s award to lose: The Certified Fresh Pixar sequel is considered a lock for the Oscar in the category, and was a huge smash with audiences and critics. But it was the underseen Missing Link, the stop-motion Big Foot movie from Kubo and the Two Strings and Coraline studio Laika, that won the Golden Globe and made this year’s animation races a touch more exciting moving forward.Tom Hanks Doesn t Usually Get This Emotional, He SwearsTom Hanks proved why he’s the most liked person in Hollywood (the world?), delivering one of the night’s most moving speeches while receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award from Charlize Theron for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Hanks started things off emotionally, struggling to speak as he shouted out his wife and five kids, then delivered some laughs (to Scorsese: “Boy, let’s see the outtakes from that movie, by the way”), before closing with a few more almost-tears (“I have checked the gate”). “I swear to God I’m not nearly this emotional at home,” he said at one point. We’re glad he let himself go this time.President Barack Obama Is on Fleabag s Naughty ListIn her acceptance speech for Fleabag’s win for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, series creator Waller-Bridge reminded everyone that she’s as much of a fan of President Barack Obama as he is of her show.“Personally, I’d like to also thank Obama for putting us on his list,” Waller-Bridge said, referring to the president s end-of-the year list. “And as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine. And if you don’t get that joke, please watch season 1 of Fleabag really, really quickly.”The NSFW scene she s talking about can be seen on YouTube.Next up are my favorite movies and TV shows of 2019. Of course, there’s also American Factory, a film from our own production company, Higher Ground, that was recently shortlisted for an Oscar. Here’s the full list: pic.twitter.com/PEcgwotcxm Barack Obama (@BarackObama) December 29, 20191917 Shakes Up Awards Season With Two Jaw-Dropping WinsThere was no direction needed for Sam Mendes to act genuinely shocked after winning Best Director – Motion Picture for 1917: he was visibly shook. So was much of the room, who were likely expecting Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon-ho, or the man Mendes himself said in his speech stands above all others, Martin Scorsese, to take the prize. Mendes’ win for Best Director was only the beginning of a surprisingly good night for his WWI drama. The movie would go on to win for Best Motion Picture – Drama, too, beating out The Irishman and Marriage Story. Opening wide in theaters next week, a strong showing at the Box Office could put the film in the frontrunner seat for Best Picture at the Oscars. And Olivia Got A Little Boozy, AgainAfter confessing she got bladdered at last year s Oscars, Olivia Colman confessed – on stage – she was a bit boozy tonight when she won her award for Best Performance By An Actress In a Television Series – Drama for The Crown. We thank her for the helpful reminder – on behalf of a number of presenters and recipients this evening – the booze was flowing in the ballroom. Are you as obsessed with awards as we are? 亚博下载网址 Today s abbreviated Thanksgiving-week Ketchup brings you six headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles such as Cats, the Sopranos prequel, and the Birds of Prey movie. This WEEK S TOP STORYNATALIE PORTMAN, BRAD PITT, TILDA SWINTON MAY STAR IN WES ANDERSON S FRENCH MUSICAL(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant, Derek Storm/Everett Collection)Wes Anderson is one of those directors with indie/arthouse roots who defies expectations from film to film. For example, his most recent film was a stop motion animated movie with a large ensemble cast playing talking dogs in Japan (Isle of Dogs, Certified Fresh at 89%). For his next film, Anderson is reportedly preparing for a French musical set during the post-World War II era, and the last week has seen a series of (unconfirmed) casting stories. The first came out last Tuesday, with a list of rumored stars including Bill Murray (Anderson s most frequent collaborator), as well as Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson (also frequent Anderson collaborators). Three days later, another story came out that two other possible co-stars were Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman. The third story seemed to confirm the casting of Tilda Swinton (also a frequent Anderson actor), as well as French actress Lea Seydoux (Spectre, Blue is the Warmest Color). We can probably expect a full ensemble cast announcement sometime soon.Fresh Developments1. JURASSIC PARK III CO-STAR LANDS LEAD IN SOPRANOS PREQUEL (Photo by Emiley Schweich/Everett Collection)The last few weeks have brought a series of news stories about movies inspired by TV shows like Breaking Bad, Deadwood, and Downton Abbey. So, one would be forgiven if they d forgotten about The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel movie to HBO s The Sopranos, which was announced in March of this year. That movie is, however, still moving forward with the news this week that the lead actor will be Alessandro Nivola (Jurassic Park III, American Hustle). Nivola has been cast as Richard Dickey Moltisanti, who in the 1960s Newark setting was a big brother figure to the young Tony Soprano (and the future father of Christopher Moltisanti). The Many Saints of Newark will be directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Terminator: Genisys), working from a screenplay cowritten by The Sopranos creator and showrunner David Chase. There is not yet a firm premise for The Many Saints of Newark, except that, in addition to being a Sopranos prequel, it s also set during the Newark riots of 1967.2. BIRDS OF PREY FULL TITLE LEANS HEAVILY ON MARGOT ROBBIE S HARLEY QUINN(Photo by Warner Bros.)Warner Bros. just made all future headlines about their Birds of Prey adaptation a lot more difficult to thumbnail with the official announcement of what its title is going to be. It brings to mind the full titles of both 2014 s Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and 1964 s Doctor Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. The lengthy title was announced by Warner Bros. via a lipstick-smeared screenplay bearing the title Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). So, the film may include Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress and Jurnee-Smollett-Bell, but Warner Bros. made sure it was Margot Robbie s Harley Quinn was front and center. Warner Bros. has scheduled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) for release on February 7, 2020 (against Peter Rabbit 2, and one week before James Bond 25).3. CHRIS PRATT S NEXT FRANCHISE MAY BE GENTLEMAN THIEF THE SAINT
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: We chatted about Waves while you promoted It Comes At Night, and you said it was a love story. Having seen the film, I ve got to ask, how is this a love story? Trey Edward Shults: It is a love story. I mean, there are love stories in it, no?Yes, but it s certainly not a rom-com or a romantic drama. Yes, but familial love is a kind of love, no? Love is the thing connecting everything in the movie. It s romantic love. It s the love of a brother and sister. It s the love of your partner. It s the love of parents and children. I think, too, with the last movie, like you said, it was so brooding. If anything, death was the center of that, and then this movie, it was like life and love. It was about the positive. I know the movie gets very dark, but I wanted to show the end of a relationship and the beginning of one, but then link it through familial love. That s what s running through it. It s all very broad, abstract stuff. I don t know if I can be more specific. It s also a hard movie to talk about without spoiling.Agreed. So let s talk about the casting, particularly Sterling K. Brown, because he s kind of got the world at his feet, right?Honestly, regarding Sterling, it was literally a dream come true to have him in this movie. I can t imagine anyone else besides Sterling playing this part. I didn t know Sterling s work until The People v. O.J. Simpson and he blew my mind. I ve been following him ever since, but following him as a human being – his interviews, the way he talks. He s a magical human being and a magical presence. It was also crazy when he came on [to the film]. It started with Kelvin and then came Lucas [Hedges], then Alexa [Demie] and Taylor, and then it kept going. The hardest thing was working out Sterling s schedule with This Is Us. We set it up to where we shifted our whole work week. We worked Saturday to Thursday. So he was doing the show in LA during the week, and then he d take a red-eye and fly to Florida to be on set the next day. I remember one day, he was lifting weights, then fighting with his son [Kelvin] that night, and then having this incredibly heavy, emotional scene with his daughter [Taylor] later that day. I don t know how he had the stamina, physical strength, or capacity to do it. He blew my mind. He just showed up as this beautiful man, but then he would get in the zone with his headphones, study the script all day, and then it was like Take one. Done. Call it. He just delivered. This film is semi-autobiographical, but when you cast Kelvin, you had to make adjustments to make it feel authentic. Talk about how you did that.Well, I hope it does feel authentic. I m a freakin white dude, so I can t speak to its authenticity. All I know is there s stuff in it from my past, but I think the larger credit goes to the actors, especially Kelvin. He s like a brother to me, and I wanted to work with him again [after It Comes at Night], and I wanted to give him a great role, because I cut some amazing acting out of the last one. So I sent him the script, and he wanted to be Tyler, so we sort of rebuilt Tyler, Ronald [Brown], and the family from the ground up. I can t speak for Kelvin because he s not here, but it almost feels like a combination of both of us. And a lot of the depth – the father and son stuff – is from Kelvin and his father. His father pushed him like that, but with music. That s why they re my collaborators. I just tried to listen, understand, and talk about it with him, Taylor, Renée [Elise Goldsberry], and Sterling. It was really was a collaboration. That made it what it is, and hopefully, if it feels special, it s because we all came together to built it that way.We also have to talk about Taylor, who plays the sister. She s an incredible discovery. I m so, so, so lucky. We saw an audition tape from our amazing casting director, Avy Kaufman, and it was her. They just got scenes. The first one was like the diner scene, and you couldn t take your eyes off her. There s so much going on internally. She doesn t have to say anything, and I m so compelled. There s a beautiful subtlety in her performance that s an inherent natural thing that an actor either has or they don t. I saw her audition, and she blew my mind. And then she met Lucas, they hit it off, and then that was it. We became a great, big, messy family. But I love that girl. I just hope she shoots off from this, because she deserves it.Let s talk about the awkward love story you gave her. It s just sort of where it naturally went with the writing. I still see the first half as a love story, but it s a relationship at its end. That couple had magnetic energy like combustible balls of fire. They love hard and they fight hard. Then the movie shifts, and it s all about rebirth. In my mind, the greatest tragedy that could happen happens midway through the film. I was crying like a baby writing, shooting, and editing it. It s just sheer devastation. And then, when everyone s at rock bottom, they go through a rebirth and evolve again. I wanted the movie to give you a hug with that second love story. You ve gone through some of the worst stuff in the world, and then it s like, what a difference a day makes. Because love can be the hardest thing in the world and it can be the most beautiful thing. How did you get Frank Ocean to let you use two of his songs? He s very particular about where he licenses his music.I just feel incredibly, incredibly blessed. Frank s one of my favorite living artists. His music, especially Channel Orange, Blonde, and Endless, they kind of changed my life. It s a bit intense. So I wrote a letter, and we sent him the movie, but it s not like I ever talked to Frank. Like, my people sent stuff to his people, so I m assuming he got that stuff. But it was funny because it was going on like a month or two, and I was still editing. I sent him a rough cut of the movie because I edited for a long time, and then his people were like, Yeah, it s not looking good. There are so many songs he won t just sign off on. Maybe you can reduce it to one song. But they came back, You re approved for all the music. You re good. And that s it. Like, I don t know if he watched the movie, read my letter. I don t know anything. I m just so blessed and grateful. I don t know how, but it happened. Finally, you must be the king of the ambiguous title. Krisha, It Comes At Night, now Waves; the narratives of each film are carefully hidden within the titles. So what do you want people to think about when they hear Waves, because the film is not about surfing. [Laughs] No, it s definitely not about surfing. It sounds cheesy, but it s really about highs and lows, the highs and lows of life and of love. There s some ocean stuff in it, but it s really more about the spirit of what the movie is. And that s what I hope people connect with.Waves opens in select theaters this Friday.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.
