While the shows don t all have to be solely about vampires, each of the series on this list must have significant characters with the urge to suck blood. That s why even though General Hospital spin-off Port Charles didn t start off as a supernatural series, it made this list anyway because of the series vampire-related story lines.True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, of course, feature prominently, but there are also many that debuted before Edward Cullen sparkled in the sunlight — the grand dame of teen supernatural soap operas, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for one. We ve also added newcomers, including the based-on-the-film FX comedy What We Do in the Shadows and Dracula, a Netflix-BBC co-production from Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.Check out our list of the best vampire TV shows ranked by Tomatometer. Shows that don t have series-level scores are listed alphabetically after the numbered entries.

(Photo by Universal Pictures)What s better than a love story set against the backdrop of the holiday season? How about 10 interconnected love stories set against the backdrop of the holiday season, populated by an A-list ensemble cast and directed by the man who brought us charmers like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones s Diary? Thanks to Richard Curtis and stars like Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Laura Linney, and many more, 2003 s Love Actually has bred a generation of adoring fans who count the film among their regularly scheduled holiday programming. That said, the movie s collection of romances has inspired no small amount of criticism over the years, and not just from joyless Grinch types, either. Some of the characterizations and relationships portrayed are, let s say, questionable in nature, and for some, no amount of cheeky Christmas-themed cheer is going to cut through that.Of course, this means it s up to us and you to settle another Christmas movie debate here on RT. Is Love Actually a modern Christmas classic, or is it just a problematic mess of a film? We present an argument representing each side of the debate from a passionate RT staffer, but it s up to you to make the call. Read on and vote below!Yes, Love Actually Is All Around!(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Let’s first get this out of the way: Love Actually is at times terrible, actually. And it is, almost all the time, problematic. We will not go point-for-point refuting the online thinkpieces that break down all the ways it is so, because we agree. Does it fat-shame Martine McCutcheon’s Natalie and Aurelia’s sister (a.k.a. “Miss Dunkin’ Donut 2003” and woman no one could ever possibly marry)? Abso-bloody-lutely. Is Andrew Lincoln’s Mark really just a terribly dressed stalker? Yes: Call Scotland Yard! Does just about every thread contain some iffy, arguably misogynistic undertones? Kinda, actually. But here’s the thing: as the Internet has taught us, all your faves are problematic – but that doesn’t mean we have to cancel them in their entirety. Rather, as Molly Ringwald showed in her recent essay for the New Yorker on The Breakfast Club, enlightenment allows us to grapple with past pop culture, to criticize and dissect it and call out its failings, even as we remain attached to elements of it. These things are complex. Because for all the glaring issues with Love, Actually, the movie has huge globs of earnest heart (we’ve all been as lovesick as Sam), soaring moments of joy (spontaneous wedding performance!), and Emma Freaking Thompson giving us all the feels. Plus Bill Nighy. Plus the nude couple. Plus “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Plus Mr. Bean. And on and on. And most of all, it makes a sh ton of people happy as hell every December – people of all backgrounds and shapes. Should we consign it to the trash, like so much torn-up wrapping paper? To do so would be to deny people their annual Love, Actually pleasure, and to shut down the exact kinds of healthy conversations about art that have led the world to reassess its merits. No, It s a Festering Turd(Photo by Universal Pictures)Before anyone starts pointing fingers, it’s not feminism that made Love Actually unsexy. It’s the film’s own misunderstandings of romance and attraction that make it problematic and, in many ways, revolting. Despite what Love Actually tries to tell you, it’s not cute to stalk your best friend’s beau, or your secretary (or your boss), or your housekeeper. Nor is it romantic to objectify your crush, or funny to fat-shame anyone. Also, it’s absolutely uncool to shame men for having emotions. (The next person to call anyone a “sissy” is getting coal in their stocking.)“Who do you have to screw around here to get a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit?” is an actual line spoken by the Prime Minister in Love Actually. But never fear, his assistant is right around the corner to answer his demands for snacks! Later, he goes to her house to profess his love for her — but “he” is Hugh Grant, so it’s… supposedly less creepy? (Hint: It’s still inappropriate; he’s her boss.)And don’t even get me started on the British boy seeking a “good shag” in the United States. Maybe Love Actually was trying to make a point about hyper-sexualization in American media (British pot, meet American kettle), but in order to pose such a critique, it would have had to actually be critical. Instead, it lets predatory men gawk at cardboard women — stand-ins for women with professional lives and actual personalities — over and over again. It’s meant to be funny, but again, it’s just cringeworthy.Love Actually so desperately tries to create endearing plots for each of its celebrated cast members that it reduces each of them to outdated, now-embarassing tropes. Love Actually is no classic; it’s a relic of problematic rom-coms past. Best Supporting Actress(Photo by @ Annapurna)Career Tomatometer average for winners: 55%Recent films Tomatometer average for winners: 55.8%Average number of films winners had appeared in: 22Best place to be ranked on the Tomatometer: 3rd of 5Tomatometer average of winning films in this category: 81.3%Tie: Regina King  If Beale Street Could Talk / Emma Stone  The Favourite Tomatometer Prediction: Regina King  If Beale Street Could TalkThis was the most hotly contested category as Regina King and Emma Stone each collected four points according to the methodology: they ve both made a similar number of movies (King with 22, Stone with 21) and earned similar career Tomatometer averages (King at 52.5%, Stone at 60.1%). To break the tie, we dug into recent Best Supporting Actress trends and discovered that first-time Academy Award nominees have won 12 of the last 18 Academy Awards in this category. This gives first-time nominee King an advantage over Oscar-winner and multiple nominee Emma Stone. Between that and the fact that King’s 52.5% career Tomatometer average is closer to the 55% career Tomatometer average of the last 18 winners, we re giving the Tomatometer s prediction officially to King for her work in If Beale Street Could Talk.Best Supporting ActorCareer Tomatometer average for winners: 60%Recent films Tomatometer average for winners: 51.1%Average number of films winners had appeared in: 34.5Best place to be ranked on the Tomatometer: 2nd out of 5Tomatometer average of winning films in this category: 89.2%Tie: Sam Elliott  A Star in Born / Sam Rockwell  ViceTomatometer Prediction: Sam Elliott  A Star is Born In a battle of the Sams, whose career Tomatometer averages are both extremely close to those of prior winners in the category (Sam Elliott at 61.9%, Sam Rockwell at 62%; the category average is 60%), we decided to go with Elliott, because A Star is Born has an 89% Tomatometer score that matches up perfectly with the 89% Tomatometer average of the past 18 winners s films in the Supporting Actor category.Further building Elliott’s case: No actor has won a Best Supporting Actor, in this century, when starring in a movie with a Tomatometer score in the 60s. This probably means bad news for Sam Rockwell, who is nominated for Vice (66% on the Tomatometer). Much like the Best Supporting Actress category, this award also tends to go to first-time nominees; 11 of the last 18 winners have been first-time nominees, with the last five Oscars going to first-timers Jared Leto, J.K. Simmons, Mark Rylance, Mahershala Ali, and Sam Rockwell. That said, the Mahershala Ali train this year says the Tomatometer might not be quite on the money here.Best Actor(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Career Tomatometer average for winners: 63.8%Recent films Tomatometer average for winners: 58.1%Average number of films winners had appeared in: 29.2Best place to be ranked on the Tomatometer: 2nd of 5Tomatometer average of winning films in this category: 87.2%Tie: Bradley Cooper A Star is Born / Christian Bale ViceTomatometer Prediction: Bradley Cooper  A Star is BornRami Malek and Christian Bale are the clear front runners for this award, but the Tomatometer says otherwise, since no lead actor this century has won an Oscar for starring in a movie with a Tomatometer score in the 60s. Because of this, we’re giving the Tomatometer s nod to Bradley Cooper over Christian Bale.We also took into consideration that A Star is Born has an 89% Tomatometer score, which is the closest of the five nominees movies to the 87.2% Tomatometer average of the past 18 winning movies in this category. Another possible contributing factor for Cooper is that he has appeared in 32 films (the average number for past winners is 29) and A Star is Born is the highest Tomatometer-rated film in the category. Top-rated films in this category win more often than the fourth-ranked films, which is where Vice sits (4 wins compared with 2 wins), which helps give Cooper the advantage.Best ActressCareer Tomatometer average for winners: 59.1%Recent films Tomatometer average for winners: 58.1%Average number of films winners had appeared in: 21.9Best place to be ranked on the Tomatometer: 2nd out of 5Tomatometer average of winning films in this category: 82.5%Tomatometer Prediction: Glenn Close The WifeGlenn Close is the only actor to avoid a tie, according to our system. Why? Close’s career Tomatometer score is 60.2%, which matches up almost perfectly with the 59.1% career Tomatometer averages of recent winners. Also, The Wife is currently at 85%, which is good news for Close because, of all the acting categories, Best Actress has the most winners with films in the 80s on the Tomatometer. On top of that, the average of the winning movies is 82.5%, which is very close to the 85% Tomatometer score for The Wife.Best DirectorCareer Tomatometer average for winners: 80.1%Recent films Tomatometer average for winners: 76.3%Average number of films winners had directed: 9.7Best place to be ranked on the Tomatometer: 3rd of 5Tomatometer average of winning films in this category: 90.5%Tomatometer Prediction: Alfonso Cuarón RomaAlfonso Cuarón won this category based on his career Tomatometer average (83%) and the number of films he has directed (8) being closest to the numbers of the past 18 winners. It also helps that Roma has a 96% Tomatometer score, which gels nicely with the 14 other victorious movies released since 2000 that have a 90%-or-more Tomatometer score. Considering the BAFTA, Director’s Guild, and Critic’s Choice awards he has won this season, we think the Tomatometer is going to get this prediction right.Best Picture (Photo by @ Netflix)Tomatometer average for winning films: 90.2%Tomatometer average for winning films since 2010: 94.8%Best place to be ranked on the Tomatometer: 2ndTomatometer Prediction: RomaSince we only looked at the 18 prior winning movies, we didn’t focus on career Tomatometer averages for this category. Instead, we looked at Tomatometer ranking and scores. The average Tomatometer score for Best Picture winners since 2000 is 90.2%, with 14 of the last 18 winners scoring 90% or above on the Tomatometer. At 96%, Roma meets that threshold and then some. What sealed the deal for Roma is that its Tomatometer score is the second-highest of all the nominees in the category (only Black Panther scored higher at 97%), and eight of the past 12 winners have also been no. 2 by Tomatometer. That said, BlacKkKlansman also scored 96% on the Tomatometer, which ties it for second with Roma, so why did we choose the latter? We went with Roma because it s ranked no. 31 and BlacKkKlansman is ranked no. 39 on Rotten Tomatoes Best of 2018 list, which takes the number of reviews into consideration. When it came to the tie-breaker, we handed it over to the people who make up the Tomatometer: the critics. There you have it. The Tomatometer predicted the winners and we’re hoping we’re able to get at least four of these right so we have a ‘Fresh’ average.Let us know who you think should win in the comment section.

Though Kennedy spent most of her time talking about Star Wars’s place on Disney+, she did offer some updates on the feature film slate. Taika Waititi is still working on the script to his Star Wars film. “Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and … unique,” Kennedy said. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”pic.twitter.com/e3N00xCr5i Patty Jenkins (@PattyJenks) December 10, 2020But Kennedy surprised everyone by announcing Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins would direct the next Star Wars feature, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Set in a what Kennedy called a “future era of Star Wars,” it will tell the tale of the famed X-Wing fighter squadron. In a video Jenkins posted to her own Twitter account, she said the project takes inspiration from her father, a US fighter pilot who lost his life in service to the country. “It ignited a desire to turn all that tragedy and thrill into the greatest fighter pilot film of all time,” she explained. It is slated for release in December of 2023.Curiously, though, no mention was made of the film trilogy Rian Johnson is reportedly developing for Lucasfilm. Some Non Star Wars News from the Land of Lucas: Willow, Indy, and an Original(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Beyond Star Wars, Lucasfilm is also working on a handful of interesting projects.First, there is the Willow television series. Spearheaded by Solo: A Star Wars Story s Jonathan Kasdan and Arrow s Wendy Mericle, it will follow a new generation of heroes and a returning Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) on quest to save the realm. According to unconfirmed reports, Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaeny, and Erin Kellyman will lead the series as that younger generation of adventurers. Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon Chu will direct the pilot.Kennedy also confirmed the upcoming Indiana Jones film will be the last. Harrison Ford returns once last time as Dr. Henry Jones Jr. But in a series first, Steven Spielberg will hand the director duties off to Logan’s James Mangold. The choice of director also reflects the sense of finality developing around the project. But perhaps most exciting project touted is Lucasfilm’s first new concept in decades: the company intends to adapt City of Blood Bone by Tomi Adeyemi for the big screen. The story centers on a young African girl’s quest to restore magic to her forsaken people. While Lucasfilm will always be the Star Wars company, it is refreshing to see them look to new ideas. 20th Century Studios will act as a producing partner on the project.Lucasfilm s plans presented by Kennedy suggest a robust future for Star Wars and a big turnaround from the original intention to produce a new Star Wars film every year. Surprisingly, the streaming universe seems a better fit, although, we cannot wait until it is safe to see a Patty Jenkins X-Wing movie in a theater. Nonetheless, it is hard to ignore the hard shift to Star Wars as a home entertainment brand. Of course, we imagine generations of fans clutching their action figures and DVDs will find little to complain about in this expanded, streaming Star Wars future.January 2021 Update: This report was updated to clarify that The Mandalorian season 3 is not expected in 2021. On an Apple device? To celebrate the actor s 92nd year, we at RT thought it the perfect time to single out just a few of our favorite performances from the iconic actor. With 60-plus credits spanning over 60 years, it was a near impossible feat, but here are our seven favorite Sidney Poitier performances.Blackboard Jungle (1955) 76%This was the role that put Poitier on the map. The struggles of educators and students are well documented in this violent and controversial film, based on Evan Hunter’s seminal novel about inner-city school conditions. Modern audiences might struggle to sympathize with the tactics employed by Poitier’s character, Gregory Miller, but the cultural impact his performance had on both society and education are undeniable. The Defiant Ones (1958) 92%Poitier garnered his first Oscar Nomination for his portrayal of Noah Cullen, an escaped black convict shackled to white fellow escapee John Joker Jackson, played by Tony Curtis. Motivated to survive and escape, the foes are forced to work together and eventually come to respect one another. The conflict and eventual cooperation between the two men plays out against the backdrop of Jim Crow, underscoring the institutions of oppression that existed at the time that would have prevented their friendship from developing. The final scene of Noah defiantly singing to Joker remains a near perfect ending to the prison break caper.A Raisin in the Sun (1961) 95%In the film adaptation of the eponymous stage play, Poitier plays Walter, the patriarch of the Youngers, a young black family living in 1950s Southside Chicago, trying to better themselves through family and a commitment to give their children a better life. Acting as a cinematic counterpoint to the idealized American dream, the Youngers struggle to combat institutions and individuals dead set on never allowing them to rise above. Walter is met with hostility and apprehension from those outside and within his community as he strives to achieve, but through it all, he and his family persevere.Lilies of the Field (1963) 92%In this Oscar-winning role, Poitier plays Homer Smith, a traveling handyman who stumbles upon a group of German nuns. The nuns believe Homer was sent by God to help them build a chapel, and by the final frames, the audience is all but convinced of the same. Even Queen Oprah Winfrey found herself without words during her Golden Globe acceptance speech as she tried to explain what it was like watching Poitier win that Oscar. Instead, she opted to quote his line from the film and simply said, Amen, amen, amen, amen. To which, I say no one could have put it better.Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) 70%If the first role you most closely associate with Poitier is not In the Heat of the Night, the likely winner is Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Playing a black man meeting his white fiancée s liberal and affluent parents, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was one of the first positive portrayals of interracial marriage to hit the big screen. Acting alongside Hollywood legends Spencer Tracey nd Kathleen Hepburn, Poitier made his mark on a verifiable American cinematic masterpiece. The influences and themes of Guess Who Coming to Dinner can be seen in several modern-day adaptations Jordan Peele brilliantly subverted those themes for social commentary and comedic effect in Get Out.In the Heat of the Night (1967) 95% They call me Mister Tibbs!  Poitier spoke those words in In the Heat of the Night, and both the film and the line have become synonymous with the actor’s career. 5.46.4 2月喜迎This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as Birds of Prey, Fast Furious 9, and The Matrix 4.This WEEK S TOP STORYKEANU REEVES IS ON BOARD FOR THE MATRIX 4What Do We Know About The Matrix 4?The Matrix 4 is officially happening! Here s everything we already know about Neo s upcoming return.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Thursday, August 22, 2019Ever since George Lucas ended his original Star Wars story cycle with Return of the Jedi in 1983, the trilogy has been perceived as the most popular way to sequelize a popular film. That is, until someone realizes that a perceived demand is still out there, and then nicely tied-together trilogies lead to movies like Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and most recently, Toy Story 4. The surprise success of The Matrix (Certified Fresh at 88%) in 1999 quickly led to sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (which ended the trilogy on a downtick both critically and at commercially). This week, four years after the disappointment of Jupiter Ascending (Rotten at 27%), Lana Wachowski confirmed that The Matrix 4 is moving forward with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity. Filming is expected to start in early 2020, and already this week, two key creative roles were filled: Wachowski is working with returning concept artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce, which suggests a unity in creature and production design. But in one departure, original trilogy cinematographer Bill Pope will be replaced by John Toll, who won back-to-back Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart (Toll s next film is Harriet). Warner Bros hasn t announced a release date for The Matrix 4 yet, but the filming start date suggests sometime in 2021 or 2022.Other Top Headlines1. BOND 25 OFFICIALLY TITLED NO TIME TO DIE(Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Columbia Pictures)After being called just James Bond 25 since the 2015 release of the 24th film, Spectre, this week we finally learned that the title will be No Time to Die. This makes Daniel Craig s final film as James Bond the fourth movie in the franchise with the word Die or Dies in the title, following Live or Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Die Another Day, breaking the tie with the opposite words (You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, and The Living Daylights). The title also plays as a reference to the news last month that Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch will be playing a new Agent 007 (ostensibly after James Bond retires). MGM has scheduled No Time to Die for release on April 8, 2020, as currently the highest profile film scheduled that month (its closest big competition is Disney s Mulan on March 27, 2020).2. MARGOT ROBBIE S BIRDS OF PREY TO FEATURE JOHN WICK-STYLE ACTION(Photo by Clay Enos / © Warner Bros. )One way that Marvel Studios changed the perception of who could direct action movies was by working with a series of directors whose backgrounds were not in the genre. We re thinking here of comedy director Peyton Reed on the two Ant-Man movies, horror director Scott Derrickson and Doctor Strange, the indie directors of Captain Marvel, and even the Russo brothers, who were best known for directing TV s Community before taking on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Warner Bros. has recently followed suit with Joker (from the director of The Hangover) and Shazam! (from the director of Lights Out). Next year s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2/7/2020) was likewise directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), who we learned this week will be assisted in reshoots of some action sequences by director Chad Stahelski. Before making his directorial debut in 2014 with John Wick (he also directed the sequels), Stahelski worked as stunt and fight coordinator on dozens of movies, including V for Vendetta, The Hunger Games, Speed Racer, and The Wolverine.3. HOBBS AND SHAW VACUUM IN FAST AND FURIOUS 9 TO BE PARTLY REPLACED BY MICHAEL ROOKER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Now that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham s Hobbs and Shaw (Fresh at 67%) characters have successfully been spun off into their own franchise (presumably), they re not expected to be returning in next year s Fast and Furious 9 (5/22/2020). As with many other franchises that have run this long, Universal regularly introduces new characters in each new film, and this week, we learned that the new additions to Fast and Furious 9 will include fan favorite Michael Rooker. (In addition to playing Yondu in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Rooker also co-starred in The Walking Dead.) Although the nature of his role wasn t otherwise specified, Rooker will reportedly play a new character named Buddy. Michael Rooker is the ninth film s second major new cast member following John Cena, who signed on for Fast and Furious 9 in June.4. CHRIS PRATT S NEXT TO BE SCI-FI THRILLER GHOST DRAFT (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)At various points in the last year or so, Chris Pratt was expected to be filming both the (possibly shelved) action movie Cowboy Ninja Viking and Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (not shelved, but it now has to wait for director James Gunn to finish The Suicide Squad). Instead, the next live-action movie (not counting Pixar s Onward) Pratt will star in will probably be the science fiction thriller Ghost Draft. The premise involves a future war that humanity is losing against an alien race, leading to a plan that involves using time travel to recruit soldiers from the past (possibly our present) to fight in the present (our future) time travel is so much fun to explain, isn t it? Chris Pratt s fellow Marvel co-star J.K. Simmons (A.K.A. J. Jonah Jameson) is now in talks to play Pratt s father, while Betty Gilpin (from Netflix s GLOW), Sam Richardson (HBO s Veep), and stand-up comedian Theo Von are also in talks to co-star in Ghost Draft, which will be directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie).5. ROBERT RODRIGUEZ SINGS TO NETFLIX, WE CAN BE HEROES (Photo by Gabriel Olsen/Getty Images)David Bowie s song Heroes didn t even crack the Top 100 in the USA when it was released in 1977, but the song has had a much longer legacy since, including frequent use in movie trailers. Netflix is also now planning a superhero movie called We Can Be Heroes (from the song s chorus), which will be written, produced and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is coming off his recent futuristic action film, Alita: Battle Angel (just this side of Fresh at 60%). The project already has a cast attached including Priyanka Chopra (TV s Quantico), Pedro Pascal (HBO s Game of Thrones), Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang, and Christian Slater. The premise itself involves the children of Earth’s superheroes [after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders] . [who] must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world. 6. TRACY MORGAN JOINS COMING 2 AMERICA(Photo by Ali Paige Goldstein/Paramount)Although other studios continue to pull movies out of December, 2020 release dates (including Disney, who moved Cruella to the summer of 2021 this week), Paramount Pictures is sticking with Coming 2 America, which is now one of only five movies scheduled that month. (The other four are The Croods 2, Dune, West Side Story, and the video game adaptation Uncharted.) The sequel to the 1989 hit comedy Coming to America already had stars both old (Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, and James Earl Jones) and new (Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Wesley Snipes), but a few more names were added this week as well. Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan was the biggest of the new stars announced, as he will be playing the hustler brother of Leslie Jones character, who is the mother of Prince Akeem s son, the result of a one-night-stand. Rotimi (TV s Power) also signed on for a role this week, as did Nomzano Mbatha and Garcelle Beauvais, who is actually reprising one of her first movie roles ever, as a rose petal princess. 7. KERRY WASHINGTON AND STERLING K. BROWN TO PAIR UP AS SHADOW FORCE(Photo by Eli Winston, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)We don t yet know which studio will win the auction, but a new action project called Shadow Force is now attracting bids across Hollywood. Compared to a fresh take on the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie romantic action movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Shadow Force pitch comes with two of TV s most popular stars already attached: Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us). The details pretty much end there, but if we re meant to make direct comparisons to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, then Brown and Washington might be playing contract killers who are both married to each other, and who are hired to kill each other (but that s just a guess).8. LIAM NEESON FOLLOWING UP HIS SNOW PLOW MOVIE WITH THE ICE ROAD(Photo by Maria Marin/©Sony Classics)It might be pure coincidence that these two films share similar themes, but in the same year that Liam Neeson s snow plow driver action movie Cold Pursuit (Fresh at 70%) was released, the Irish star is taking on a new movie that could easily live in the same universe. Neeson is now signed to star in the action adventure The Ice Road as a big rig ice road driver who, after a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners. The Ice Road will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, whose career Tomatometer (mostly as screenwriter) sports nine Rotten scores and just one Fresh one for 2011 s Kill the Irishman. It s not yet known if Cold Pursuit and The Ice Road will be followed by a third cold weather driving movie to complete a thematic trilogy (perhaps about driving a pack of sled dogs?).9. MARVEL AND SONY PARTING WAYS OVER FUTURE SPIDER-MAN MOVIES What Will Happen If Spider-Man Leaves the MCU?What will the MCU look like without Spider-Man? We re breaking down what the Sony/Disney split means for fans.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Wednesday, August 21, 2019If you follow online movie news at all (and by reading this far into this column, we suspect that you do), then you already know that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are parting ways over future plans for Spider-Man movies. Having said that, hopefully we can still give you some details you may not be aware of. First, to elaborate, Kevin Feige will no longer be involved with Sony s plans for Spider-Man movies after Sony reportedly rejected an offer from Disney to share costs (and profits) in a 50/50 deal. Sony then responded with a series of Twitter responses that used words like mischaracterized and disappointed, which may have been a response to criticism from some fans who were quick to side with Disney, Feige, and Marvel Studios. It s worth noting that Sony Pictures was also able to deliver both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse without Feige s help, which might have fueled their resolve. This week s news also came just a few days after Spider-Man: Far from Home became Sony s biggest box office hit ever. As for Tom Holland, he s expected to continue to star as Sony s Spider-Man (his contract still has two movies left, plus he could re-sign), and he s also working with Sony again soon as the star of their video game adaptation Uncharted (12/18/2020). As for Sony s plans, they retain their movie rights to over 900 Spider-Man-related Marvel characters, including Jared Leto s Morbius (7/31/2020), Tom Hardy s Venom 2 (10/2/2020), and other movies in development, like Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat, Silk, Silver Sable, The Sinister Six, and the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.Like this? Stars. They’re just like us: also deeply fascinated by true-crime stories, like the one at the center of The Act. The series, which is Certified Fresh at 92% on the Tomatometer, is based on a Buzzfeed News article by writer Michelle Dean called “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom Murdered,” which was subsequently turned into the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. The Act star Chloë Sevigny was so engrossed by the documentary that she watched it twice in a row.“I was so flabbergasted,” Sevigny told Rotten Tomatoes — a natural reaction to hearing the full story of Dee Dee and Gypsy Blanchard. The Story(Photo by Brownie Harris/Hulu)On the surface, Dee Dee (played in The Act by Patricia Arquette) seemed to be a devoted mother caring for her incredibly sick daughter, Gypsy (Joey King). In reality, it turns out that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen by proxy and forced her daughter to shave her head, use a wheelchair, and undergo unnecessary medical treatment. Eventually, Gypsy (and her secret online boyfriend) killed Dee Dee.Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca, who created the series alongside Dean, said of the many questions he had after reading Dean’s story, there was one that was most important to answer when turning the saga into a scripted drama.“How does this happen in real life? The important thing for me to explore in working on the show was what was that experience like,” Antosca told Rotten Tomatoes. “What was it like for Gypsy to live in that house for all those years, and participate in the deception that has so many layers? It s such a complicated experience, and that was the most important thing to dig into for me. And, also, to be accurate about what happened: the fact that she underwent all these medical procedures, that she had her teeth extracted, she had this feeding tube, that it was medical abuse on a day-to-day basis. It was important that we portray the truth of what happened to her.”The Show(Photo by CZ Post/Hulu)Antosca came to the project from the horror world, having created Syfy’s horror anthology Channel Zero and written several episodes of Hannibal.“My experience is in horror, but it s always human horror, and that s what I m interested in: human horror, psychological horror,” he said. “I don t feel like I was playing in a completely different sandbox here than I was with Channel Zero or Hannibal, because great horror always puts character and psychology first. And The Act, on some level, is a profound psychological horror story.”It’s also grounded thanks to Dean’s extensive research on Dee Dee and Gypsy’s lives and medical records that became her thorough 8,500-plus word article. Since the facts are so well-documented, the story isn’t treated as a mystery, but rather more of a character study.“The story is so widely read that this show can t be a mystery in a traditional sense,” he said. “Not whodunit. It s more existential than that. It s how could this happen, and what was it like to live through that? As a storyteller, and as a viewer, and as a reader of an article, that s what is really interesting to me and compelling to me.”The Characters(Photo by CZ Post/Hulu)Arquette and King portray the mother and daughter at the center of the story, and both underwent serious physical transformations for the role (including King shaving her head).“For Dee Dee, we needed somebody who obviously had incredible range, but also who could be very grounded and human while playing this woman who did monstrous things,” Antosca said. “So we didn t want her to worry about being likable, but she had to have an inherent humanity.”Sevigny plays Dee Dee and Gypsy’s neighbor, Mel, an amalgam of several real-life neighbors.“The challenge was that truth is stranger than fiction, and this story, there s so much there,” she said. “That s why it was exciting that we got to do eight hours of a deep delve into these characters and these people s relationships.”Sevigny had to make her character as relatable as possible, especially in the middle of such an unbelievable story.“When you think about Chloe s roles, they re so diverse. From Kids to Zodiac, she plays so many different kinds of people,” Antosca said. “We felt like for the neighbors — when you hear this story, you go, ‘How could people have been fooled? How were they so dumb?’ And the fact is that they weren t [dumb]. They were just regular people like you and me, and if our neighbor said ‘My daughter s sick and she s in a wheelchair,’ you wouldn t question it. So it was important that the neighbors, who are basically the audience s surrogates, be real, regular people who are perceptive, and smart, and just trying to live their lives while this deception is going on right under their noses, so that we feel their sense of betrayal once the truth comes out.”Sevigny, who won a Golden Globe for her role in Big Love and makes a case for more trophies here, also drew inspiration from family members in other true-crime documentaries.“I did a whole binge of Making a Murderer when it first started, and I was thinking a lot about the aunts and cousins and different women you would see in some of the footage,” she said. “Just the women in those parts of the country that are so hard-working and can t catch a break and how they re so hardened by their circumstances, and I was trying to infuse Mel with that kind of person that you see in those sorts of documentaries.”The Illness(Photo by Brownie Harris/Hulu)While Gypsy might appear to be the sick one, the truth is that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a caregiver makes up or even causes illness in their ward. It’s a disease that has been portrayed in pop culture before (most recently in 2018’s HBO miniseries Sharp Objects), and it’s something that can quickly turn from relatable quirk to disturbing affliction.Dean found in her research that some scientists believe “there was a spike in Munchausen once the Internet came around and people could look up reams of medical information at home in front of the television,” she told reporters on a Television Critics Association panel about the series in February. “And I think we’ve all had that experience where you’re having an ache or a pain and you go on WebMD and you think, ‘Oh, I have cancer.’”And the way Munchausen moms in particular suffer from the illness means that there’s also still that natural instinct to protect and care for their child, and sometimes their lies take over what they rationally should know to be the truth.“In order to be a successful fraudster you usually have to believe the fraud. You fall for it yourself,” Dean said during the panel. “I think actually that’s the answer to the question, Why are people so intrigued by Munchausen? It’s the question of, does the mother really believe that the child is sick or not? And in speaking to Munchausen experts, we learned they don’t know the answer to that question either.”But why is pop culture so interested in Munchausen by proxy now?“I think it s part of our ongoing fascination with motherhood, what a mother should be. The mother as a monster sometimes,” Antosca told Rotten Tomatoes. “And I think it s a role that incredibly complicated to explore. We all have interesting and complicated relationships with our mothers. Every mother makes mistakes, and does the wrong thing out of love sometimes, and this is such an extreme example of that. I think it s universally fascinating.”The FutureThe Act was ordered at Hulu as an anthology series, but Antosca said he isn’t necessarily sure he has the right idea for another season just yet.“Honestly, I pursued this show and wanted to make this show because of Dee Dee and Gypsy s story. If we do another season, it would have to be another really complex human relationship. I m not interested in doing a story about a murder, or about a crime. It has to be about the people behind the crime,” he said. “So I would love to do another season. I don t know what it is yet. I m completely focused on the first one now. We re still editing the last couple episodes, but if we did another season, it would have to be about regular people in America searching for the American dream and going to a very dark place because of it.”Sevigny has moved between film and television for nearly her entire career, and she’s planning to continue doing that. In 2019, she appears in Netflix series Russian Doll in addition to The Act, as well as several feature films, including Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die with Adam Driver and Tilda Swinton — “It s a zombie comedy. Also Selena Gomez is in it,” she said. She also submitted a short she directed to Cannes, and is currently filming Queen and Slim, directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe and James Frey.“I love making movies, and I hope forever to make movies,” she said. “It s nice, though, that there s so much challenging work being made for TV and I hope to continue to work on great projects like I have been. I like cruising between the two. And also directing. I ve directed a few shorts now and am hopefully going to develop a feature this year.”Hulu releases new episodes of The Act every Wednesday.Like this? Whether they call it a reboot, remake or reimagining, television producers love to capitalize on nostalgia with fresh takes on beloved programming. But this doesn’t automatically mean the new versions are any good.Luckily, this isn’t the problem for the new take on Saved By the Bell, Peacock’s update – they prefer to go with option three and call it a “reimagining” – of the teen sitcom that ran from 1989 to 1993 on NBC (and then in syndicated reruns for near-perpetuity). The update, which released all 10 of its first season episodes in November on the streaming service, is Certified Fresh with critics calling it “a throwback that looks forward, embracing the past while living in the now” or arguing that it works because it’s self-aware and because it’s “legitimately funny and good-hearted in a time that s rife with cynicism.”So it wasn t much of a surprise when the series was renewed for a 10-episode second season.(Photo by Chris Haston/Peacock)Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, who appeared in the original series as the popular, progressive and overachieving Jessie Spano and who now returns to the show as an older, wiser and more accomplished version of the character, says credit for all this praise is due to the new series’ showrunner, Tracey Wigfield. She “could not have dreamed of someone better to bring this back with the right tone and the relevant issues, she told Rotten Tomatoes after the series November premiere. The 30 Rock and The Mindy Project alum grew up watching the first series take on topical issues like environmental awareness, women’s rights and – as Berkley Lauren’s Jessie herself immortalized when she became “so excited” and then “so scared” when she got hooked on caffeine pills – addiction within a neon haze of pranks, fake bands, large cell phones and Mark-Paul Gosselaar s lead Zack Morris occasional ability to stop time and break the fourth wall.(Photo by Trae Patton/Peacock)The new version follows what happens when California’s idiot mayor (Gosselaar reprising his role as the continually-failing-upward Zack) botches the school budgets and kids from a high school in a lower-income neighborhood join Zack and Jessie’s alma mater, Bayside High, after their school is closed. Class warfare, overprotective parenting, preconceived racial and social biases and more come into play (character actress Dana Powell guest-stars as a Bayside mom with a savior complex named Joyce Whitelady). But some things about high school never change, no matter the decade. And this show is full of Easter eggs and references to the classic version. The homage is seen most starkly in new show s inclusion of the original stars and its update on Berkley Lauren and Gosselaar’s characters, as well as their then-paramours Tiffani Thiessen’s Kelly Kapowski, and Mario Lopez’s A.C. Slater (now, respectively, First Lady of California Kelly Morris and the high school’s football coach).(Photo by Casey Durkin/Peacock)Or when it comes to recreating inevitable teen-aged infatuations. Josie Totah’s Lexi Haddad-DeFabrizio is a power-obsessed Type A personality who has long harbored feelings for her best friend, Jessie’s oft-clueless jock son, Jamie (Belmont Cameli). This dynamic is so similar to the Jessie-Slater pairing from back in the day that, in the episode where Lexi admits her feelings, her hair is styled in long blond waves – a modern-day take on the spirals of curls and big bows that Jessie used to wear (and, quite honestly, is sometimes seen sported even now). For Berkley Lauren, who is also a producer for this reimagining, it also means a chance to explore what happens when an ambitious teen girl grows into an educated and successful adult. Now the Jill Biden of Bayside High, Jessie is not only the school’s counselor, but she also holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology, is a best-selling author and is known in some circles for her TED Talks.“Jessie, at the time, was such a progressive character on television — especially for young woman — and a character who has such a strong vision for herself,” Berkley Lauren said. “She was all about success and accomplishments and what she was going to pursue … I felt protective and that I wanted to let [the fans] know what she actually did do and what she actually did go for and accomplish.”

Manuel Betancourt for Rotten Tomatoes: In terms of the prep for Sound of Metal, I know you spent months practicing drums and learning sign language. What surprised you the most about mastering both of those skills simultaneously?Riz Ahmed: I started down the road of learning how to play the drums and learning American Sign Language because that s what the character has to do. Darius wanted the drumming to be for real; he wanted us to be able to improvise with deaf actors on set. But actually what I got out of learning those two skills was more than just the skills themselves. I think they really opened me up in interesting ways. So I think of what Guy Licata [the Brooklyn-based drummer with whom he practiced] told me when I was learning how to play the drums: you can t play the drums, they have to play you. There s an element of surrender and submission and giving over to your body and your instinct that has to occur in order to successfully try and, you know, drum anything. That was a lesson for me in the same way that it s a lesson for Ruben in the movie about what you lose, sure, but also, what can be gained when you lose control. I kind of feel like there was a quite profound lesson in there. Then, with the American Sign Language, I feel like the deaf community taught me the true meaning of the word listening. And the word communication. Listening isn t something you just do with your ears. It s something you do with your whole body. It s about putting yourself in a state of receptive attention for someone else s energy. I think that members of the deaf community and the deaf cast on this project, for me, are some of the best listeners I have ever met in my life. And you know, [co-star] Jeremy [Lee Stone] would say that there s a trope in the deaf community that hearing people are emotionally repressed because they hide behind words. When I started becoming more fluent in ASL I understood what he meant, because when you communicate in sign language, you are doing it with your whole body in such a connected way that feels so visceral you find yourself getting much more emotional about things. At least I did signing them. (Photo by © Amazon Prime Video)There’s such a physicality to Ruben. He’s both so electric and so still at the same time. I wondered if this experience will affect not just future roles but also the way you approach your work.Ahmed: Well, again, I think it s more that the process of preparation worked on me. You know, it wasn t a matter of me kind of controlling this. It just happened, I think, by trusting the process of learning to play the drums and sign language which are both nonverbal communication that force you to communicate more with your body and place you more in your body. So I think the demands of the role technically ended up having other effects. They just kind of inform the performance. To be honest, I kind of feel like I went into this project looking for a new process and looking for a new way into my work. I think coming from a British background there can be a lot of onus on the text, and a lot of kind of cerebral analysis of texts and story and character. And that s great.

Ghcxuf Sundance may be famous for setting the terms of the indie film conversation of the year, but the film festival also serves as a launching platform for new horror voices that become successes later on. As the home to Hereditary, The Babadook, Get Out, and The Blair Witch Project, the Sundance Midnight program has a bit of a reputation, leaving this year’s selection with some pretty big shoes to fill. This year, genre spread to other sections of the programming, as fans needn’t have stayed up late at the Park City Library to catch some disturbing or just plain weird movies. No matter what your favorite genre is, you were bound to find something up your alley, from unusual documentaries to scary movies to fantastical comedies. And the good news is that distributors and streaming services are likely to snatch them up and make them available to you soon, with some of them already on the way. With expectations high, the question of what will be this year’s Hereditary-style hit is constantly brought up. We checked out the films competing to become this year’s big breakout hit, and rounded up what the critics were saying, so you can begin preparing your watchlists of what Sundance films are most likely to make a big impression once they get released. His House (2020) 100%(Photo by Aidan Monaghan courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDNetflix’s big acquisition at Sundance is this tale of horror both supernatural and human. His House tells the story of a refugee couple who flee the horrors of the South Sudan civil war and come to England to start a new life. What they find is something that doesn’t want them there, with the very walls of the house exuding a sinister vibe. What makes the film truly special is how it balances the supernatural horrors of a haunted house movie with a poignant and equally devastating immigration story of survivor’s guilt. As Benjamin Lee wrote for The Guardian, “The haunting that takes place is one that’s tied to something that feels real.” Netflix will release His House some time later this year, and once it does, you can expect a movie that will make audiences scream, all while getting people to empathize with a refugee couple’s story by way of a haunted apartment,” as RogerEbert.com’s Nick Allen puts it.Save Yourselves! (2020) 89%(Photo by Matt Clegg courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDWe are all obsessed with our phones; there’s no denying that. But what happens if we try to distance ourselves from the internet for a short time? According to Save Yourselves!, you may miss an alien invasion. Su (Sunita Mani) and Jack (John Paul Reynolds) are a hip Millennial couple, ruled by the technology at their disposal. When Su suggests they get away without technology in order to cleanse themselves during a life-reaffirming week, they find themselves having to fight off adorable poof-like aliens that remind us of a cuter version of Critters, as the rest of the world is already under attack. Rachel Wagner from Rachel Reviews writes that the film “is not only a very funny look at modern Millennial life but a sweet romance of a couple who become stronger through facing off with aliens.” Save Yourselves! is currently looking for distribution.Relic (2020) 92%(Photo by Jackson Finter courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDThe best horror often manages to be both a terrifying piece of entertainment and a poignant commentary on our reality. A remarkable debut by Natalie Erika James, Relic turns the haunted house story on its head, using the horror genre to tell an emotional story of dementia. Australian stage legend Robyn Nevin gives a terrifying yet emotionally devastating performance as a woman whose mind and body is slowly failing her, while a strange and eerie presence haunts her home. “Like Mike Flanagan before her”, writes Film School Rejects Rob Hunter, “Natalie Erika James flawlessly blends terrifying horror with the ache of humanity.” Rest assured, when Relic finally gets released, it will make you scream before it pulls on your heart strings.Run Sweetheart Run (2020) 73%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: BlumhouseRelease Date: TBDBlumhouse returns to Sundance with its second “Sweetheart”-titled movie in Run Sweetheart Run. Like last year’s Sweetheart, this movie finds a young woman having to go toe-to-toe with an inhuman monster, as we follow Ella Balinska’s Cherie on her first date in a while. The problem is that her date turns out less than stellar, and she is forced to run through the streets of Los Angeles for an entire night to escape the blood-loving monster she mistook for a chance at romance. Though critics note that the metaphors are thinly-veiled at best, Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro writes that “Run Sweetheart Run makes for an entertaining and cheeky trip centered around woman’s curse.”Bad Hair (2020) 62%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDA social thriller starring a killer weave, Bad Hair is a campy throwback to 80s horror B-movies with a whole lot on its mind. Writer-director Justin Simien returns to Sundance with a film about the importance of and controversy surrounding hair in the Black community, focusing on a lowly assistant at a TV show who gets a new hairstyle that helps her move up in her career – with some deadly, bloodthirsty consequences. Writing for That Shelf, Victor Stiff explains that the film “is a delightful horror dramedy that interrogates black women’s struggle to be true to themselves in the face of a system hellbent on snuffing out their blackness.” Bad Hair is looking for distribution.Possessor: Uncut (2020) 94%(Photo by Karim Hussain courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDPlaying like a horror version of Inception, Brandon Cronenberg (yes, son of David) takes us on a disturbing, bloody nightmare that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. The film stars Andrea Riseborough as a contract killer whose consciousness gets implanted into others so she can control them into committing murders for hire that is, until she finds herself struggling to control a particularly difficult body. This is a movie that’s not for the faint of heart, as Slashfilm’s Chris Evangelista writes: “This isn’t a work designed to thrill and entertain. Instead, it’s meticulously crafted to horrify. The violence on display here is graphic to the extreme, yet it never feels cartoonish.” While the violence and blood may be too much for some viewers, critics agree that this film is a unique experience worth seeing; as Rob Hunter writes for Film School Rejects, Possessor “is fantastically and cruelly unforgettable.” Keep an eye out for Possessor as it looks for distribution.Into the Deep (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDThe rare documentary to play at the midnight slot, this bone-chilling film started as an homage to Danish amateur inventor Peter Madsen before turning into an exploration of evil when Madsen murdered and dismembered Swedish journalist Kim Wall during the time the doc was being shot. Emma Sullivan’s Into the Deep features stunning footage both pre-murder and in its immediate aftermath, dealing with the shock of the filmmakers realizing what kind of subject they’re following as their film begins to resemble something akin to a horror flick. Writing for Vanyaland, Nick Johnston says, “Into the Deep is a unique beast in a documentary landscape that’s more consumed than ever with the true-crime genre, and it is a must-watch for anyone even slightly curious about the events of this bizarre and tragic crime.” Netflix will release Into the Deep later this year. The Night House (2020) 87%(Photo by Elisha Christian courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Searchlight PicturesRelease Date: TBDLike A Quiet Place in 2018, The Night House relies on sound to create a terrifying horror experience that will make your bones vibrate. After the loss of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) begins to spend her nights plagued by strange dreams and creepy noises around the house. Critics spoke highly of Hall’s performance, with Birth.Movies.Death’s Ed Travis calling her a “scream queen.” They also commended the string of jump scares that shook audiences at the fest; Bloody Disgusting s Meagan Navarro explains “[the film] leaves you breathless and your heart pumping hard.” Searchlight Pictures bought the distribution rights for the film and will be releasing at a later date.Scare Me (2020) 82%(Photo by Brendan Banks courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: ShudderRelease Date: TBDNo matter how elaborate or grand a horror movie is, the scariest memories most of us have still belong to the nights we spent as youngsters listening to scary stories after dark. Scare Me takes the tale of an aspiring horror screenwriter trapped in a snowy cabin with a best-selling horror novelist telling each other stories and turns it into an exploration of the creative process and even gender politics, all while delivering a minimalist yet still spooky experience. As Daily Dead’s Heather Wixson writes, “Scare Me is an absolute delight and a real gift for both horror fans as well as those of us who can’t get enough of hearing a good story. ” Shudder will release Scare Me at a later date.Spree (2020) 67%(Photo by Rylan Perry courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: RLJE FilmsRelease Date: TBDEugene Kotlyarenko’s Spree asks, What if Joker was a streamer and wannabe influencer? The thriller-comedy, which is shot found-footage style, features Joe Keery doing his best Arthur Fleck impersonation as a guy obsessed with becoming internet famous by streaming a night of violent mayhem. It s a commentary on our collective obsession with social media, privilege, and the darkness of comment sections. What makes the film more than just a Black Mirror episode is how it infuses jokes and gags into the horror – and then seems to ask why we re laughing. Nick Allen wrote for RogerEbert.com that “Spree brilliantly shows influencer culture for the totally demented lifestyle that it is.” RLJE Films will release Spree later this year.Like this?
