Pixar’s newest critically acclaimed film, Soul, bears many of the studio’s hallmarks: it’s a high-concept metaphysical story about who we are as people with echoes of Inside Out… and, yes, it will make you bawl. But it might also be the animation giant’s most distinct and ambitious movie yet. From directors Pete Docter and Kemp Powers, Soul stars Jamie Foxx as jazz pianist Joe, who never quite broke out but hasn’t let go of his dreams, and who’s forced to take a look at his life when a near-death experience sends his soul into a different world – one full of other souls, many of them as lost as he is. It’s challenging stuff, but heartfelt and funny, with a killer soundtrack and a story that, for the first time in Pixar’s history, centers on Black characters and experiences. Ahead of the movie’s premiere on Disney+, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley sat down with Foxx, co-stars Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Angela Bassett, and Questlove, plus Docter, Powers, and producer Dana Murray, to talk about crafting a unique entry into the Pixar canon, the moments in their lives they felt the spark Joe feels, and the roles that put them “in the zone.”Soul is available on Disney+ from December 25, 2020. On an Apple device? Spider-Man: Far From Home swung into theaters ahead of the July 4 holiday, ready to snatch up tons of cash and extend the MCU following the events of Infinity War and Endgame. Critics are liking what they see in this second solo(ish) outing for Tom Holland s Peter Parker; the movie is Certified Fresh at 92% on the Tomatometer right now, with reviews throwing praise at Holland, Zendaya, and MCU newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as the movie s twisty plot and its abundance of big laughs. But is it the best Spider-Man movie we ve seen? That s a hard call with Spider-Man 2 still lingering in people s memories, and last year s Into the Spider-Verse raising the bar of what s possible in animation. This week our RT Aftershow panel – host Mark Ellis, Geek Bomb s Maude Garett, and critics Scott Mantz and Joelle Monique – weighs in on that question, along with what they thought of Mysterio, the movie s many surprises, and where the MCU could be headed next. 4.75.3 3月喜迎Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost) returns to HBO with his rendition of Watchmen, the first live-action television series adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons iconic graphic novel series. The original 12-issues told explored an alternate 1985 reality where America is on the brink of nuclear war.The story kicks off after the mysterious murder of a vigilante known as The Comedian provokes his peers — a group of heroes including the inkblot mask-wearing Rorschach, the Batman-esque Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and otherworldly Dr. Manhattan — to come out of retirement to investigate the crime, leading them to an epic conflict with supervillain Ozymandias. All the while the Doomsday Clock continues ticking closer to midnight. It s 34 years later in HBO s Watchmen and in this tale, both law enforcement and criminals hide behind masks. A white supremacist group in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has taken to using Rorschach s iconic inkblot mask to further their own terrorist agenda and tensions are boiling over. The series boasts a roster of heavy-hitting talent, including Leftovers alum Regina King as Detective Angela Abar, Jeremy Irons as Adrian Veidt (aka Ozymandias), Jean Smart as FBI Agent Laurie Blake (aka Silk Spectre), Don Johnson as Chief Judd Crawford, and Louis Gossett Jr. as Will Reeves.Lindelof previously described his version of Watchmen as a remix — not a reboot — and revealed to EW that his series should be considered a sequel, acknowledging Moore and Gibbons comics as canon. Zack Snyder s polarizing movie adaptation of the comics came out 10 years ago to mixed reviews — it has a 64% Tomatometer score on 306 reviews — leaving many die-hard fans disappointed. Will Lindelof s take on the landmark tale fall into the style-over-substance trap, as well? Here’s what critics are saying about the premiere episode of HBO s Watchmen:(Photo by Mark Hill/HBO)HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE COMIC?Lindelof and his team have done the impossible – they’ve captured the superhero deconstruction elements that stood out in Moore and Gibbons’ work while also expanding on their world-building. The end result is destined to be one of the year’s most compelling shows.  Chris Evangelista, SlashFilmHard to know where this will go, but the pilot is certainly dazzling and bold.  Roger Catlin, rogercatlin.comUltimately, getting into the minutiae will be for uber fans. Everybody else will probably just roll with the joyfully creative explosion of weirdness that sits within Lindelof s Watchmen.  Tim Goodman, The Hollywood ReporterWatchmen doesn’t overdose on nostalgia, like so many franchise extensions in our reboot-soaked decade. It’s dangerous, and invigorating. Darren Franich, EWLindelof s Watchmen is bold, creative and challenging, maintaining a faithfulness to the source material, or its spirit, at least, without being overly reverential (we re looking at you, Zack Snyder).  Kevin Melrose, CBROverall, Lindelof’s Watchmen embraces the spirit of the original comic with its stylish cynicism while attempting to erect a new organizing principle all its own, which will prove controversial to some.  Brandon Katz, Observer

(Photo by ©20th Century Fox Films Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)If you grew up in the 90s, chances are your first exposure to anime was either Pokémon or Digimon, and your parents would regularly mix one up with the other. Honestly, it s not that hard to see why. Both shows originated as video games  Digimon started out as Tamagotchi-like virtual pets and Pokémon was a series of role-playing games before expanding to trading cards, TV shows, and movies. While Pokémon grew to become a multimedia juggernaut that has churned out TV seasons non-stop since 1997 and produced over 20 feature films, Digimon has quietly but steadily remained in its shadow since it premiered in 1999. But with the recent release of Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and with the franchise s first film, Digimon: The Movie, celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, it s about time we take out our Digivice, become champions of the Digital World, and explore why Digimon is the superior 90s franchise about young kids who befriend small fighting monsters. It Was Appointment TV(Photo by FOX)By the late 90s, we were already entering the era of prestige TV, as the arrival of shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing, with a stronger focus on serialized narratives, forced people to tune in every week or risk missing important plot points. Though children s television at the time was mostly episodic, Digimon marked a groundbreaking development for many kids of the era who discovered that they too had to watch every episode if they wanted to follow along with the story. Many episodes ended on cliffhangers, characters experienced genuine story arcs, and smaller events and characters were frequently referenced later. Sometimes, major characters would be separated from each other for weeks at a time, and side characters would suddenly become important. This made for a more challenging but rewarding experience that treated children like a serious TV-viewing audience. More than anything, the show trusted its young viewers to keep up with its narrative week by week, so that by the time the epic finale came each season, the anticipation for it had been building for months. It Tackled Mature Subjects(Photo by FOX)Digimon is very much a Saturday morning cartoon-style show aimed at kids, but it got away with a surprising amount of depth. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Digimon featured character development that would unfold over the course of each season. The second season spent a lot of time telling the story of the self-proclaimed Digimon Emperor, who is consumed by darkness and begins to take over the Digital World before atoning for his sins in a redemption arc that spans several episodes. The show also explored themes that were relatable to kids but seldom seen in kids cartoons, like exploring the effects of a divorce on a family, the pressure of living up to one s family s expectations, or the grief of losing a loved one. In the third season, a character named Jeri is even thrown into a weeks-long depression after the death of a Digimon friend. Indeed, Digimon fully acknowledged that its titular creatures are dangerous beings, and danger lurks behind every corner, sometimes with devastating results. The show was upbeat and action-packed for the most part, but it was never afraid to pull at your heartstrings, either. Its Stakes Were Incredibly High(Photo by FOX)Digimon isn t about collecting all the monsters, or about fighting a new villain each week; it s about kids on a mission to literally save the world. No offense to Jessie and James of Pokémon s Team Rocket, but they aren t the most competent villains out there. Meanwhile, the Digital World of Digimon is home to some seriously monstrous villains capable of ruthless evil. Each season hinges on world-ending stakes that require the kids to work against all odds with the help of a friend or two to win the day. In most of the seasons (as well as the recent movie and new reboot), the Digital World even leaks into the real world, threatening to destroy everything.Such high stakes have meant that the series has lost more than a few of its characters. This may be a children s show, but Digimon has never been afraid to kill off beloved heroes in heartbreaking ways we still haven t healed from the devastating loss of Wizardmon in the original series. Plenty of friends and allies have met their demise over the course of the show, so much so that one character held a funeral for lost friends during the first season. But sure, remind me how sad it was when Ash said goodbye to Butterfree — which wasn t even permanent. The Movie Is Bonkers and Has a Fantastic, Totally 90s Soundtrack(Photo by Everett Collection)Speaking of high stakes, the plot of Digimon: The Movie is completely nuts. The main characters (still 10 years old, by the way) literally have to prevent a nuclear warhead from exploding over Tokyo after a virus-infected Digimon takes over the U.S. nuclear arsenal specifically to target a couple of kids. It takes a while for the kids to bring the fight to the bad guy, though, because they also have to battle… slow internet connections and the unreliable email.Considering the movie was cobbled together from three short films and packaged for release outside of Japan, it s a wonder the story makes any sense at all. It s also worth noting that two of those three short films were the early efforts of acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, who would go on to make films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Mirai. But the greatest thing about Digimon: The Movie isn t its ludicrous story, but its bizarre yet surprisingly solid soundtrack. Just as Pokémon: The First Movie included songs by Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and NSYNC, the producers of Digimon went all out to make their movie the most 90s event ever. In addition to the show s theme song, which reflects a time when every anime show was marketed to American audiences with hip hop, the film s pop soundtrack includes everything from Fatboy Slim, Barenaked Ladies sexually-charged One Week, and a fantastic cover of Kids in America by Len to a pre-Shrek All Star by the one and only Smash Mouth to close out the film. That s right, pre-Shrek. Meme or not, that s hard to top.It Knew How to End(Photo by Toei Animation)Franchises eventually change, whether they re Star Wars, Marvel, or Toy Story, but Pokémon, despite an occasional change of scenery, has otherwise remained pretty much the same, plot- and character-wise. Digimon, on the other hand, always knew its audience was eventually going to grow up, so it grew up with them. 2015 saw the release of Digimon Tri, a series of movies that picked up 5 years after the end of the original show, with the characters now in high-school. Then, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna came out earlier this year and, like Toy Story 3 did for a little while, actually dared to say goodbye to the franchise with a story that signals from the get-go that it will be Agumon and Tai s final adventure.Digimon s audience came of age with the franchise because Digimon is a coming-of-age story. It recognized its place in the audience s life and has grown to reflect the same changes its audience has experienced. Digimon knows some things from our childhood will inevitably have to be left behind. Though the series was ultimately rebooted earlier this year, Last Evolution Kizuna puts a bittersweet bow on 20 years of adventures that began with Digimon Adventure and Digimon: The Movie, which is an example that more franchises honestly should follow.Digimon: The Movie was released in theaters on October 6, 2000.On an Apple device? 亚博游戏登入 Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Candyman, James Bond 25, Puss in Boots 2, and A Quiet Place 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYRAMI MALEK WILL PLAY THE NEXT BOND VILLAIN(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)The Academy Awards may ostensibly be about rewarding art, but the acting winners in particular often land big roles immediately after. This year, that was true for both of the male actors (maybe next week, Regina King and Olivia Colman?). Before his Academy Award-winning portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek was best known as the star of TV s Mr. Robot, but he was confirmed this week for a major role in one of Hollywood s most lucrative film franchises. Malek is now in final negotiations to star in the upcoming James Bond film, which will be Daniel Craig s fifth outing as 007. He will play the film s main villain, who is believed to have roots in North Africa, due to both his Egyptian heritage and that of the previous actor in talks for the role, Said Taghmaoui, who is Moroccan. Malek is the first new actor to be announced to join the franchise, with Spectre co-stars Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny), Lea Seydoux (Madeleine Swann), and Ben Whishaw (Q) expected to return. Cary Joji Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Beasts of No Nation, season 1 of True Detective) will direct James Bond 25, which is scheduled for release on April 8, 2020 (with no current competition). Rami Malek will also voice Chee-Chee the gorilla in next year s The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle (1/17/2020), starring Robert Downey Jr. (Note: there were also stories this week that Lupita Nyong o was sought to co-star as the next Bond girl, but her team reportedly said, it won t work out with her. )Fresh Developments1. EMILY BLUNT AND THE KID ACTORS RETURNING FOR A QUIET PLACE SEQUEL(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)Last year s horror hit A Quiet Place lost its one chance at an Academy Award (Sound Editing) to Bohemian Rhapsody, but this was still a big week for that film s legacy, Oscar or not. Actor-turned-director John Krasinski took to his Instagram to announce that the Quiet Place sequel is now scheduled for just a little over two years after the first film, on May 15, 2020. That puts A Quiet Place 2 within a week either way of Fast and Furious 9, Legally Blonde 3, the Scooby-Doo reboot, the third SpongeBob SquarePants movie, and the World War II film Greyhound. It s currently unclear whether John Krasinski will return to act in the sequel, but he will at least direct, as he did with the first movie. Emily Blunt and the kid actors Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are all in talks to reprise their roles, which confirms that the sequel will continue their stories (instead of revolving around another family).2. YORGOS LANTHIMOS ADAPTING 1960S CRIME NOVEL NEXT(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)This year s Academy Awards ultimately didn t work out for director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster), as The Favourite (Certified Fresh at 94%) lost in all but one of the categories in which it was nominated for an Oscar (the exception being Olivia Colman s Best Actress win). Lanthimos remains, however, an awards darling (The Favourite did win seven BAFTAS, for example), so many are awaiting his next film. Lanthimos has switched genres with each film, and we learned this week that he s following his 18th century costume drama with an adaptation of a 1960s crime novel, as he is signed to write and direct a film based on the novel Pop. 1280 by Jim Thompson (The Grifters, The Getaway), who co-wrote Stanley Kubrick s Paths of Glory. Pop. 1280 tells the story of a corrupt sheriff of a small town [who] manipulates the people in his orbit in order to win the next election.  The film is described as a high priority and likely Yorgos Lanthimos next film as director.3. GLENN CLOSE IS READY FOR HER CLOSE-UP IN THE SUNSET BOULEVARD REMAKE(Photo by Sony Pictures Classics)In addition to her career as an actress in film (Dangerous Liaisons, Fatal Attraction, 101 Dalmatians) and on television (Damages, The Shield), Glenn Close has also had great success on stage. Going into this week s Academy Awards, Close was considered by many pundits to be the front runner for the Best Actress trophy (which ultimately went to Olivia Colman and The Favourite) for her work in The Wife. Now it appears she s close to moving on to one of her dream projects, a film version of the stage musical adaptation of Billy Wilder s 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard (Certified Fresh at 98%), for which she previously won won one of her three Tony Awards. Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford is now attached to direct Sunset Boulevard, in what will effectively be his feature film debut as director. Paramount Pictures is reportedly planning to start production on Sunset Boulevard in the fall of 2019. In a similar vein, Fox Searchlight is now developing a remake of the 1991 thriller Sleeping with the Enemy, starring Julia Roberts.4. MAHERSHALA ALI TO LEAD SCI-FI DRAMA SOVEREIGN(Photo by Universal Pictures)Three of the acting winners in this year s Academy Awards were also first time nominees (Olivia Colman, Regina King, and Rami Malek), and Mahershala Ali won his second Academy Award for Supporting Actor for his role in Best Picture-winner Green Book. Like Malek, Ali s agents were also able to convert the win into a major new role this week. Mahershala Ali is now signed to star in the science fiction drama Sovereign for director Marc Munden (who s directed episodes of Utopia, Conviction, and Vanity Fair). The details of the screenplay by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (co-writers of A Quiet Place) aren t being revealed in detail, but the tone is described as being similar to Denis Villeneuve s Arrival.5. THIS WEEK IN KIDS MOVIES: PUSS IN BOOTS 2, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 4, CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG (Photo by Paramount Pictures)This was a big week for kids movies, with two big sequels confirmed to be moving forward in development. Like many other stories this week, the first is directly related to one of this year s big Academy Awards winners. Sony Pictures scored a rare non-Disney Best Animated Feature win for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and one of that film s co-directors is now signed for a new film. Bob Persichetti, who worked on 2011 s Puss in Boots, is now signed to direct the sequel Puss in Boots 2 for DreamWorks Animation. DreamWorks is also adapting a new Shrek movie (with the original cast). Meanwhile, Sony Pictures is now at work on the animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 4, which the studio has dated for December 22, 2021 (up against the Wicked movie). Lastly, Paramount has also scheduled their long-in-development adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog (likely to be a live action/animation hybrid) for November 13, 2020 (Rugrats was scheduled for that date, but that has now been pushed back two months to January 29, 2021).

Presenting their off-screen growth in the since Thor: The Dark World and Ant-Man and The Wasp was definitely intentional, though.“We wanted them to be the heroes of their space, and so, in order to be that, they needed to be good at their job, they needed to have grown professionally and personally and, yeah, people seem to be here for it,” Schaeffer said. The series creator also aimed to put both characters in the position of the fans themselves – charting Wanda and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) movements within the sitcom-ized Westview and scanning the earlier episodes for clues about their predicament, although she and the writing staff arrived there by a circuitous route: Initially, it was a chance for the writers to put parts of the whiteboard they were using to map the show into the series.“It was us trying to make sense of the rules of the world that we were creating and the mystery that we were building, Schaeffer said. And so a constant thing was stacking up the questions and then deciding when that question was answered and moving those cards around.”Some of that thought-process made its way onto the set in the form of Agent Woo s whiteboard. Which is not to suggest the board contains clues, though. As Schaeffer sees it now, it is very much a case of the writers engaging in the same questions the fans are now asking four episodes in. Although, she admits she did not “anticipate the one-to-one sort of fan simulcasts” emerging from each episode.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios 2021. So for people to then examine those decisions and pour over those decisions, I mean, it s really making me feel like I m super important,” she joked. “But it s also a little intimidating because I want people to feel satisfied about where the show goes and I just really hope they do.”As for our own examination of the details in the kitchen sets and the possibility that it may be commenting on the roles of women on sitcoms like The Dick Van Dyke Show and Bewitched, Schaeffer said it may be more of a subconscious element in recreating the look of those programs’ kitchens than a direct story point.“The kitchen is such an important space and, especially in the earlier sitcoms, that was where the ladies hung out most of the time,” she said, crediting production designer Mark Worthington and episode director Matt Shakman with paying so much attention to the details of the shows being honored via the constantly-changing home Wanda and Vision share.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios 2021. Whether or not the changes to the set have a deeper meaning remains to be seen. Schaeffer suggested a deep-dive Q A with Worthington about his choices “might have to wait” until the full scope of the series is revealed.Another question that will have to wait: whether or not Wanda can grieve. It is another key detail the series appears to be circling around, and Schaeffer only offered that Wanda is a “complex lady.”That complexity is a clue to why she would recreate family sitcoms of the 1960s and ’70s – if she is behind all of this, of course – but it also speaks to the character’s experience with television. As it happens, no sitcom of the late ’70s fits the world she seems to be creating in Westview. That era of family sitcoms was dominated by producer Norman Lear, whose All in The Family, Maude, and Good Times confronted societal ills in a very direct way. Though Schaeffer and the writing team took a good look at those programs, she said, “The overt social commentary of those shows didn t entirely align with what we were doing in the ’70s.”Joel MearesWanda’s version of the Me Decade definitely appears dominated by the more affluent world of the Bradys than, say, that of the project-dwelling Evans family of Good Times or the one Maude Findlay strove to make for herself. A Wanda Maximoff hoping to avoid poverty and racial or political unrest is not hard to imagine, and as we will likely see in upcoming episodes, television shifted back toward an idealized middle-class affluence in the 1980s – something that will enable her to maintain the fantasy.Regardless of how 20th-century sitcoms approached their material, they always did it in the classic (and boxy) 4:3 frame of cathode ray tube televisions. With WandaVision’s fourth episode, the Marvel world returned to the widescreen view of films like Iron Man and Avengers: Endgame. And now that the series has played with both frame sizes, Schaeffer said she expects viewers will embrace any screen size, color scheme, or plot development the program can dream up next.“We ve thrown a lot at them and what they ve shown us is that they are ready for switcheroos and surprises and playing with form and structure,” Schaeffer said. “And they should expect a lot.”
