I, personally, intuited that it was not going to happen. I don’t know why. I just had a feeling it wasn’t going to happen. Somehow, Netflix obviously wasn’t happy with us or the results of our show. It’s not as though everybody was running over to the set to tell us how much they loved us. That’s how things happen, and that’s the nature of Netflix – they keep everything a secret with respect to ratings and such. They keep you up in the air. I just had a feeling that it was not going to happen.I thought that was the end of it, but I forgot to count on Sony, because Sony from the very, very beginning has absolutely loved our show, from the very first reading at the table years ago. They loved the concept, they loved the comedy and they absolutely adored the cast. They saw it and they were right – we have this incredible rapport! And that was there from the get-go, and that was very unusual. Sometimes, people in series grow into their characters more and there’s a chemistry that develops over time. We had that chemistry from the moment we opened our mouths!After the news broke about the series cancellation, fans banded together online and called for its return. What was your reaction to hearing the fan reactions?Moreno: I was very, very touched. I believe in the public. If they really love something, they will fight for the thing that they love, and that’s sure as hell what they did. I was amazed that aside from Sony trying very hard to take the series elsewhere, I think [showrunner] Gloria Calderon-Kellett did a huge job of goosing our fans. She’s a determined woman, and it shows.And what was your reaction to the news that you would play Lydia again?Moreno: Oh, we were delighted! We were thrilled. It was marvelous. I couldn’t actually believe that we had this family again.When we last saw Lydia, she was in Cuba. Are we going to see any of that in the new season?Moreno: Oh, you’re going to see that. That happens in the third – I guess, the fourth one. It is beautiful and it is very, very touching. You’re gonna love it. And it’s funny! We never fail to be funny. Not everyone can accomplish that so smoothly as our writers do. Some shows try to do that and they’re clumsy at it. It’s like the jokes come, then the sad part comes, and then the jokes come again. What’s the story behind them?Moreno: That’s one of the best things that happened to that character, that damn curtain. And the funny thing is, I didn’t think it would work. Just goes to show how much I know. I thought it would just be a flourish, but then the audience, from the first time I did it, went crazy. They literally went bananas, cheering, and carrying on. They had to cut some of that down because it just took too long. It’s one of the greatest gifts I’ve gotten on this show.Whose idea was it?Moreno: Oh, it had to be Gloria’s because she’s Cuban. I just can’t imagine anyone else coming up with that. She has that Cuban flare. We understand each other in that overly dramatic, theatrical way.Where there any challenges moving the show from a streaming platform to a cable channel with a set time limit?Moreno: What happens is sometimes the laughs are huge, and they take up a lot of time. Here’s something that’s so unusual. We didn’t have a laugh track until now [for coronavirus precautions]. We had an audience, and we’d have to cut that down because that took up so much time and now we only have 22 minutes. So this happens rather often until now because we’ll no longer have audiences, which is going to be tough. Well, I’ll take some of that back. The writer’s room comes down and provides the laughter, except after five or six takes, what was very funny on take one isn’t so funny on the fifth take.What are some of your favorite moments playing Lydia?Moreno: One of my favorites is one where I barely spoke, that was the episode where Lydia has a stroke and is unconscious in the hospital. It’s a wonderful, beautifully written episode. It’s one of those episodes that had a very strong through-line. A lot of shows don’t have that. It’s not necessarily the nature of a sitcom to have something like that. It was beautifully done. I also loved one from the first season where Lupita (Justina Machado) says something about how she’s not so sure she believes in the Almighty, and her mom Lydia gets very, very upset about that. I just thought, my God, how wonderful is it to do this kind of television where you don’t have to worry about subject matter? Where someone can say, “I’m not sure I believe in God.” And the other one says, “You better believe because my prayers saved you were in Iraq.” The subject was heavy, but extremely funny when it had to be. I think it’s one of Justina’s favorites, too.What are some of your hopes for Lydia in the future?Moreno: I would love it if she gets into ultra-local politics. She has such a big mouth, and she can get in so much trouble. You know, the kind of politics where the trash isn’t being picked up enough, and we have to do something about it. Nothing heavy. I would just love it if she going into trouble because she opens her mouth and says things she shouldn’t, not realizing that in politics you don’t open your big mouth every time you want to.@onedaypopWhen Abuelita wants you to explain TikTok to her ##fliptheswitch ##onedayatatime ##odaat♬ Nonstop DrakeI saw you were also on the One Day at a Time TikTok account. What was that experience like?Moreno: You know, I still don’t know what the hell that is. It’s so bizarre. They said, “Here’s what you do,” and I said, “OK.” Everybody seems to watch TikTok. It’s weird.With so much uncertainty going on, what’s it like to be a part of a show that offers its audience some comfort?Moreno: It’s wonderful, and [the show] provides many wonderful things. It provides warmth, it provides humor, it provides very serious and profound issues. It’s perfect in its own way. (Photo by Paramount Pictures)The movie Airplane!, which celebrates its 40th anniversary on July 2, is routinely regarded as the crème de la crème of spoof films.Filmmakers Jim Abrahams and brothers David Zucker and Jerry Zucker’s goofy comedy is meant to be a send-up of the Airport movies of the 1970s which capitalized on large star-studded casts and even larger theatrics as well as other films. It s Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer, and decades after its release, it still regularly makes it onto people’s lists of favorite comedies, even as the spoof comedy has fallen out of vogue.Simply put, Airplane! works because it covers something that is deathly serious  an airline disaster but doesn’t take itself too seriously. In addition to an inflatable cockpit autopilot named Otto and Lloyd Bridges’ increasingly frantic control tower supervisor he picked the wrong week to quit smoking, drinking, taking amphetamines, and sniffing glue there’s a running joke centered on whether Leslie Nielsen s Dr. Rumack understands the difference between the woman’s name Shirley and the adverb “surely.”But, even prospective first-time viewers who might balk at the spoiler-heavy paragraph above would clearly have gotten a sense of what kind of film Airplane! is from its title alone. Or, more specifically, from the exclamation point in its title.“An exclamation point is usually used for a different meaning… like a strength or importance or [to get you to] pay attention,” says Mike Kaplan, a film marketing strategist also known for his extensive collection of vintage movie posters. “With Airplane!, as I remember it, it’s a satire on the other movies that have used it. It’s an interesting jumping-off point for sure.”Kaplan, who worked on posters and campaigns for films like A Clockwork Orange, says it’s not necessarily a bad thing to see punctuation used in cinematic titles or posters as long as it “works organically” and doesn’t have the “feeling that it s been manipulated.” The point is to not be bothered by it, to almost forget it’s there.Before we spoke, he said he never paid much attention to the use of the symbol. He then remembered he’d worked on a couple campaigns that used it, including director Lindsay Anderson’s 1973 dramedy, O Lucky Man!, which stars Malcolm McDowell. Kaplan participated in a documentary about Anderson in which McDowell tells the story that the film was originally meant to be called Lucky Man, but that Anderson changed the title after reading the treatment because, Kaplan says, “that’s signifying it s more important, and that a title like Lucky Man could mean… you’re lucky for different things. But O Lucky Man! gives it a universality and importance, almost a philosophical statement.” Kaplan says he remembers the exclamation point coming in around when he did the film’s first title treatment. Anderson, whom he recalls had distinct handwriting and always wrote with red Pentel pens, responded back by noting a red exclamation point next to the title. The symbol is almost shouting to the audience that the film doesn’t take itself too seriously and that some zany hijinks are in store.But this wasn’t always the case. The exclamation point used to be revered, and it was only used to signify grandeur and grab your attention. You see it in the 1960s musicals Hello, Dolly! and Oliver!.Robert Lee, a musical theatre writer who is on the faculty of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, says he doesn’t know for sure why either of those two musicals has an exclamation point in its title, although he points out that both are set in the 1800s and “trade in nostalgia.” He wonders if they’re there to channel “old-time theater handbills” from an era when literacy rates were lower and when the exclamation point was used as a sort of punctuational carnival barker on posters to grab your attention. He also adds that both are titles derived from the leads’ names and songs sung about them.Both were also known for show-stopping numbers, and their trailers create the feeling that these are films the whole family cannot miss (even though the latter’s focus on starving London orphans isn’t exactly a happy-go-lucky topic).They’re also both based on stage productions, a medium that has a long love affair with the symbol. The double-punctuated musical revue Oh! Calcutta!, which debuted Off-Broadway in 1969, has what a 2015 New York Daily News article describes as “a pair of grammatical jazz hands.” The article quotes a branding specialist who says the title for that production works because it brings urgency, excitement and humor.”(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Abrahams and the Zucker brothers wrote the screenplay for their comedic masterpiece based on the 1957 film Zero Hour!, a World War II drama from director Hall Bartlett that takes itself extremely seriously (the Zuckers bought the rights to the film, so there’s no issue of copyright infringement). A a representative for David Zucker confirms that the filmmakers kept the exclamation point in their film’s title for that reason. They would go on to use it for other screwball spoofs like Top Secret! (a parody on both musicals and Cold War-era spy films) and their TV series Police Squad! (a knock on cop dramas), the precursor to the Naked Gun films.Henry Fuhrmann is a professor at University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism and a former chief of the Los Angeles Times copy editing desk – where he had a reputation, among myself and others, for his extreme distaste for the exclamation point. During our interview, he thinks of classic front-page headlines where the exclamation point was unavoidable, such as the one for D-Day that screamed Invasion! But he also references the F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: “Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.”(Photo by Douglas Aircraft Co./Los Angeles Times)He says that exclamation points were usually thought to be unnecessary in formal writing, because if a sentence “has the right active, strong verb, it will connote the tenor of the drama that you’re trying to say.”Fuhrmann says it’s a testament to Airplane! that not including the exclamation point is “an obvious error to anyone” because “you just know it’s a part of the title. Brands like Yahoo!, which also uses the punctuation symbol, do not get the same kind of respect.“It definitely works in Airplane!,” he says, because “it s just a small thing with potentially great power, and that’s what makes punctuation so interesting.”But the advent of social media has made us crave an even stronger hit of punctuation endorphins. Fuhrmann points to Gretchen McCulloch’s 2019 book Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language. There, McCulloch argues that our language has evolved so that the exclamation point connotes “warmth or sincerity, rather than just excitement.” The Comedy Central series Corporate, a dark satire about white-collar desk jockeys, directly addresses this. 6.58.8 3月喜迎终于英雄联盟手游不删档测试开启了,等了好久,实属不易。从去年曝光游戏内容画面开始,英雄联盟手游一直都是广大玩家关注的焦点。之前国服上线超燃测试里,更是有诸多玩家争先恐后的抢资格,热度居高不下。
(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)The numbers look good for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which pulled in a record-breaking million across the four-day weekend. They look even better for theaters and the industry. The only people  probably looking at the numbers with some grief are the folks at Paramount, which recently pushed both Jackass Forever and Top Gun: Maverick off this year’s schedule into 2022. That could still turn out to be a good idea and ultimately be looked back upon as just a slight delay for some bigger grosses, assuming the pandemic numbers head in the right direction again. But as the box office numbers have been showing for the past month now, people are still going to the movies – especially when there are no streaming options. But even more important for the industry is the extrapolation of these numbers, which are starting to feel more like pre-2020 instead of 2021. And not to bury the lede, but the box office just had its biggest Labor Day weekend ever. Not bad.King of the Crop: Shang-Chi Breaks Multiple Records, But Can It Be the first 2021 Movie to Hit 0 Million?Only four other times in history has the four-day Labor Day holiday grossed over 0 million, led by the likes of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Possession (two of those movies did not even debut in that weekend). The films in this Labor Day weekend s top 10 grossed over 1 million, besting the 4 million over the 2007 holiday which was led by Zombie s Halloween.Last week when we measured the success of Candyman, it was the Thursday-preview numbers that served as our guide. This week, we note that Shang-Chi had the second-best preview numbers during the pandemic, with .8 million. That is more than F9’s .1 million and less than Black Widow’s .2 million, which we should remember was made before the film hit Premier Access on Disney+ on Friday. Shang-Chi had no Premier Access on Friday, nor Saturday, Sunday, Monday, nor going forward.The seven past live-action PG-13 films which have grossed between .3 million and .3 million in Thursday previews include 2014’s Godzilla, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They averaged a three-day opening weekend of .5 million, with the second Fantastic Beasts film posting the weakest eventual three-day haul with .1 million. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings posted an estimate of .5 million over just the three days. That may be slightly below the average of those other films, which all had more recognizable name brands than Shang-Chi, but it is also the biggest Labor Day opening ever, the second-best opening of the pandemic, and the third-best September weekend ever behind both of the It films.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Those are also the only films to ever open in September and gross over 0 million. That is a number the box office has yet to crack since Bad Boys for Life did it before shutdown in 2020. Black Widow opened to million and could not do it – but it was also available for a price at home. F9 opened to million and came up shy of 5 million, despite being a theatrical exclusive. Only five films have ever grossed million or more in their first five days and failed to gross 0 million: Fifty Shades of Grey, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Simpsons Movie, and The Day After Tomorrow are four of them; the fifth is this summer’s Black Widow (i.e. pandemic + home availability = some will avoid the risk).Shang-Chi has very little competition over the next few weeks before Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases in its new just-announced date – Sony was clearly encouraged by this weekend s numbers – and No Time To Die comes out. Add Monday’s holiday to the total and Shang-Chi is estimated to have a gross around million over the four days, very much in line with the pre-pandemic average based on its Thursday numbers. What a difference a day makes! If we can begin to measure some metrics by films just being a day or so off their pre-2019 theatrical exclusive wavelengths, we may be making some progress. Especially if we can all just stay safe out there.The Top Ten And Beyond: Candyman Holds Strong As Free Guy Sets Sights on Passing Jungle Cruise(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Shang-Chi could not deliver the best Labor Day weekend ever all by itself. The continuing success of Free Guy can not be overlooked as it made another .9 million over the weekend and .4 million total over the holiday, bringing its total to .5 million in 25 days. That is over half a million more than what Jungle Cruise had in 26 days (.97 million). Cruise, which has been available on Disney+’s Premier Access, still has a strong presence in the top 5 in its sixth weekend of release and has driven its theatrical total to 6.7 million. Free Guy, without any streaming options until the end of the month, is now likely to surpass Jungle’s numbers and possibly get as high as 0 million. Free Guy’s three-day weekend also ranks 16th all-time amongst fourth weekends for August releases – higher than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Straight Outta Compton, Rush Hour 3, and Lee Daniels The Butler. It has made 9 million worldwide to date. Jungle Cruise is at 9 million.Candyman contributed even more money to the pot this weekend, making .4 million for a 53% drop from last weekend – better than The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’s 57% fall from a .1 million start and Old’s 59.3% fall from .8 million. With an increase to .3 million through the holiday, Candyman’s .7 million in 11 days is less than a million behind the pace of HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad, which made .6 million in 10 days. Remember that James Gunn’s day-and-date streaming film fell 71.5% down to .4 million in its second weekend. Candyman is now poised to surpass that film’s total and settle in with around million- million.Paw Patrol: The Movie, which Paramount sacrificed into theaters so Clifford the Big Red Dog could live on someday, grossed .1 million this weekend and an estimated .3 million over the holiday. No family film released in the second half of August has ever grossed million, let alone one streaming at the same time. Paw Patrol finds itself with .5 million after 17 days, which is better than The Angry Birds Movie 2 was doing in the same period in 2019 with a .94 million third weekend and .79 million. It went on to gross .66 million. Expect Paw Patrol to end up in that vicinity – lower than most family films gone hybrid this year, but potentially still higher than Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2, which was exclusive to theaters.On The Vine: James Wan s Original Horror Film, Malignant, a Venice Favorite, and MoreJames Wan’s Malignant may be the closest thing to challenge Shang-Chi’s number 1 slot (but that is still further away than Jim Carrey’s shot at Lauren Holly in Dumb and Dumber). The horror film will also be streaming on HBO Max starting Friday. In more exclusive news, STXFilms is putting the Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste crime comedy, Queenpins, into select Cinemark theaters, just their second during the pandemic after this February’s The Mauritanian. Then Focus will be releasing Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, which debuted to great critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival this past week. Let’s have a laugh at your expense,” he warned, then said that his limo’s license plate was made by Huffman, who served 11 days in jail for her role in the college admissions scandal. His point: winners should keep their speeches short, because out-of-touch actors and filmmakers have no business lecturing the public about politics (which many actors and filmmakers, of course, went on to do later in the program – moments which you can find online but which we ve left out here).Shocking Upsets Hit in First Acting Awards of the NightAfter insulting them for working with Apple, Gervais turned the stage over to Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. But is El Camino a necessary story to add to Gilligan s Breaking Bad universe? In our spotlight section, we highlight the Oscar underdog-turned-frontrunner and the undisputed king of our Awards Leaderboard, Parasite, and in our indie trailer section, we have new clips from Ethan Hawke, Anjelica Huston, Stranger Things lead Noah Schnapp, and Riley Keough.Opening This Weekend (Photo by Syfy)That cornerstone may have something to do with Blue’s last scene in season 1, but Meloni was careful to say “we haven t touched on it yet.”Meanwhile, Nick faces, essentially, a new life for which he is not prepared.“[He’s] trying to his best to mimic how normal human beings behave and how to operate in a normal life,” Meloni explained. “All that while being sober … he s having a difficult time.”Nonetheless, Nick is trying to turn his life around for the sake of his daughter Hailey (Bryce Lorenzo), who lost touch with Happy at the end of the first season. As Meloni put it, Nick feels he has to “be a straight arrow and be perfect, to not be the debauched [guy] that everyone says.” It will not be an easy task, as viewers will discover in the season 2 premiere.And even as Nick tells Happy he will stay away from violence, violence always finds Nick. Meloni, however, insists it is not his fault.“Have you ever hung out with someone that bad things happen to? You ll go, ‘That person is a klutz,’ right? Or that person that gets into a lot of car accidents or always is hurting themselves? That s what Nick Sax is. While not exactly the commercialized holiday Christmas is — and less of a target for jokes about presents, decorations, and the like — the early episodes of the season revolve around a plan to make Easter celebrations more like a Christmas II.And as Meloni noted, Easter is “one of the more bizarre things that we have attempted to commercialize. It s the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior for some people, and we celebrate it with Easter bunnies and chocolate eggs — which is an odd collision of competing ideas. Easter also means a new focus on certain Catholic ideas, as viewers will see early in the premiere episode. And although Meloni said the intention was never to “take a swipe at some organization,” Happy! cannot help but send up the power bases in the world. The greed and hypocrisy of media conglomerates and massive organizations gives the show a darker undercurrent even as it s meant to make you laugh. With that in mind, Meloni added the inherent humor of both Easter and the wider send-up of commercialized holidays “played well into our characters, like Sunny Shine.”The character, a sort of demented Blue’s Clues host on party drugs, emerged in the first season as the real source of pain in the characters’ lives — not that they realized it before he could escape prosecution. The character’s growing status as the big bad of Happy! was the result of Fitzgerald’s work in the first year. That organic process also led to expanded roles for Lorenzo, Coster, Medina Senghore (who plays Hailey s mother, Amanda), Patrick Fischler (as the genital-less killer Smoothie), and Lili Mirojnick as Nick’s former partner, Meredith McCarthy.“Just about every actor on the show got expanded by virtue of the work they get first season,” Meloni explained. “Season 2 is really going to delve into everyone’s backstory and obsessions, desire, home life, and history.”It is also going to feature crazy dance numbers, Anne-Margaret as a former star of questionable 1970s cinema, and Sunny’s wildest scheme to date. The result is a show that s as terrifying and dramatic as it is bloody good fun to watch.Lovecraft Country is a production-budget upgrade for Green and Smollett who previously both found themselves in strong lead positions with Underground — Green stepped into her first-ever role as showrunner, and Smollett carried the Underground Railroad–inspired WGN series as its star. Their creative reunion is a force to be reckoned with here, further bolstered by an epic effects budget and riveting performances by Smollett and Majors along with their supporting cast: Emmy-winner Courtney B. Her strength and courage save the menfolk again and again. — Nikki Onafuye, Digital SpyMajors, who broke through with his role in 2018’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco, is mesmerizing as shy yet resilient Atticus. His energy and personality perfectly harmonize with Smollett’s Leti, who’s very brave, passionate, and incredibly fierce. With the actress’ performance of Black Canary in Birds of Prey and Letitia’s portrayal in Lovecraft Country, this is definitely her year – as she rightfully deserves. There s a sequence of Leti at church that incorporates the sound from this 2017 Nike campaign that champions equality for the LGBTQ community. Audio from different eras helps link the present and past. —Patricia Puentes, CNET “Lovecraft Country” has a sense of timeliness as well. When police arrive at the scene of a disturbance, the Black crowd adopts a “hands up, don’t shoot” posture; taken into custody, Letitia is subjected to the sort of bruising police van ride that led to the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore in 2015. —Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times Sometimes, the soundtrack is era-specific, but get used to the likes of Cardi B or Frank Ocean or The Jeffersons theme accompanying the action — or, in a bold break from cinematic tradition, for some montages to be accompanied not by songs, but by monologues, such as an excerpt from James Baldwin’s famous 1965 debate about racism with conservative pundit William F.
