亚博竞彩靠谱么采用百度引擎4(Baidu 6)With a total of seven new films either opening in wide release or expanding from limited this weekend, it s no surprise that at least three of them will be competing to draw in younger viewers. Of those three, two are rated PG-13, namely the latest entry in the DC Extended Universe and a prequel to the Transformers franchise. Both have gotten solid reviews, but exactly how much do each of them lean into that PG-13 rating? Christy Lemire offers the parental perspective on both, in case you re in the mood to treat the family to a pre-Christmas big screen adventure.NOW IN THEATERS

This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering a couple of major announcements and new roles for Viggo Mortensen, Elisabeth Moss, Kaitlyn Dever, Thomasin McKenzie, and Olivia Munn. This WEEK S TOP STORYTENET, WONDER WOMAN 1984, GODZILLA VS. KONG AMONG NEW MOVIES DELAYED(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Recently, when Warner Bros. released the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan s new action thriller Tenet, many people noticed that it ended with Coming to Theaters,  neglecting to specify exactly when that might be. Tenet has been announced for release on July 17, 2020 since last summer, but with most movie theaters currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been increasing questions about whether it would shift its release or not. In breaking news late on Friday afternoon, Warner Bros. confirmed that Tenet will indeed be pushed back two weeks to July 31, 2020. On the July 17, 2020 date when Tenet was supposed to have been released, WB will instead re-release Christopher Nolan s Inception (Certified Fresh at 87%), another trippy action movie with mind-bending visuals. In addition to Tenet, which many in the industry were looking to as the barometer for theatrical reopenings across the country, Warner Bros. also announced that Wonder Woman 1984 is getting pushed to October 2; Robert Zemeckis s remake of The Witches is being pulled from its October 9 release to an unknown date; the animated-live action hybrid Tom Jerry is getting pushed from December 23 to March of next year; and the giant monster face-off Godzilla vs. Kong is moving from its November 20 date to May 21, 2020, which in turn pushes back the fourth Matrix film all the way to April 1, 2022. As of right now, Disney s Mulan is still scheduled to open on July 24, making it the first big movie to be released in the post-coronavirus environment, but it would not be surprising if that changed as well.Other Top Headlines1. THE ACADEMY S NEW INCLUSIVITY RULES MANDATE 10 BEST PICTURE NOMINEES EVERY YEAR (Photo by Getty Images)The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been revising the rules and categories for the Academy Awards almost since the awards started in the late 1920s (they used to award Oscars for Best Dance Direction, for example). Although the rules of the Oscars seemed relatively stable for decades, they ve made several changes in the last decade, starting with the decision in 2009 to expand the number of Best Picture nominees from five to a maximum of 10. Responding to calls for more inclusion in their standards, AMPAS again changed some of its rules, one of which was to return the number of Best Picture nominees to a consistent ten every year. Although the Academy keeps many secrets about how close films get to being nominated, there has been speculation that some of the snubbed movies in recent years (like say, last year s The Farewell and If Beale Street Could Talk) could have been Best Picture nominees. These changes will take effect starting with the films of 2021 and will include other guidelines put in place by a new task force of industry leaders to develop and implement a new representation and inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility. 2. VIGGO MORTENSEN S GREEN BOOK REUNION WILL DEPICT THE GREATEST BEER RUN EVER (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Director Peter Farrelly s controversial 2018 film about race relations in the 1960s, Green Book, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture last year, which led to reactions like this. For his next film, Farrelly will be reuniting with one of the stars of that film, namely Viggo Mortensen, for another true story set in the 1960s. The film will be an adaptation of the non-fiction book, The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A True Story of Friendship Stronger than War, which told the story of a young man (nicknamed Chickie ) who traveled in 1967 from New York to Vietnam to share a few beers with his childhood friends serving in the Army in the Vietnam War. Brian Currie, who also co-wrote Green Book, will be one of the screenwriters on The Greatest Beer Run Ever as well, along with Pete Jones (Hall Pass). In addition to its various awards, Green Book also earned over 0 million worldwide, so the bar is set pretty high for The Greatest Beer Run Ever.3. BOOKSMART STAR KAITLYN DEVER LANDS FEMALE LEAD IN DEAR EVAN HANSEN (Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Annapurna Pictures)Since her co-star Beanie Feldstein was also in Lady Bird (Certified Fresh at 99%), the breakout star of last year s Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 97%) was arguably Kaitlyn Dever (although she had previously been a cast member on TV of both Justified and Last Man Standing). For her next role, Kaitlyn Dever has landed the female lead in the film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway play Dear Evan Hansen. Although at 26, he is much older than the high school student he portrayed, Ben Platt is expected to reprise his role from the Broadway production in the new film. Dear Evan Hansen is the story of a socially awkward high school student who gets caught up in a web of deception after one of his letters to a classmate who committed suicide is confused with being the suicide note itself. Dever will play the dead student s sister who begins dating Evan Hansen. Dear Evan Hansen will be directed for Universal Pictures by Stephen Chbosky, whose previous films include Wonder (Certified Fresh at 85%) and The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Certified Fresh at 86%). Dear Evan Hansen does not yet have a release date (many movies don t right now), but it seems likely to be one of Universal s late 2021 awards contenders.4. DISNEY GIVING LIONEL RICHIE HIS OWN MOVIE MUSICAL ALL NIGHT LONG (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)Some of the most popular movie musicals of the last several years have included both traditional biopics like Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, but also jukebox musicals like Mamma Mia! and, arguably, Yesterday. Walt Disney Pictures is now developing a new musical inspired by and including the numerous pop songs of Lionel Richie to be titled All Night Long, named after his 1983 hit song. The film, which is intended to be a theatrical release, will not be a biopic but more like Mamma Mia!, and the screenwriter will be Pete Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me 2). Something that remains unclear is whether the songs will be only from Lionel Richie s solo career, or if it will also include songs from his career with the Commodores (such as Brick House, Nightshift, Three Times a Lady, Easy ).5. BRUCE CAMPBELL CONFIRMS THE EXISTENCE OF EVIL DEAD NOW (Photo by Matt Klitscher/©Starz!)Long before he ever directed a Spider-Man movie, Sam Raimi first became famous with his Evil Dead horror comedy franchise starring Bruce Campbell as the chainsaw-wielding anti-hero Ash. The franchise was rebooted in 2013 with Evil Dead (Fresh at 62%), which failed to generate enough attention for its own sequel. Instead, Campbell revealed this week that a new fifth Evil Dead movie to be titled Evil Dead Now is currently being developed by writer/director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground). Evil Dead Now is expected to be a new story not directly connected to either the characters of the 2013 remake or Sam Raimi s original trilogy.6. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO STAR IN GRAPHIC NOVEL ADAPTATION SNOW BLIND (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Following his Marvel Comics Universe debut last year as the villain Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%), Jake Gyllenhaal is now attached to star in another movie based on a graphic novel. That project, called Snow Blind, is an action-adventure about a young boy who discovers that the reason that his family lives in Alaska is that they are in the Witness Protection Program. Snow Blind is being compared to a cross between Gyllenhaal s Prisoners (Certified Fresh at 80%) and the River Phoenix film Running on Empty (Fresh at 85%) (although that family of domestic terrorists on the run was sort of the the exact opposite of the Witness Protection Program). Snow Blind will be written by Patrick Ness, the author of A Monster Calls (Certified Fresh at 86%) whose Chaos Walking (starring Tom Holland) is currently awaiting release.7. KEKE PALMER TO STAR IN ABDUCTION THRILLER ALICE (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)One of the horror films still awaiting release due to COVID-19 delays is Antebellum, which appears to be about a modern African-American woman (Janelle Monae) who discovers she has somehow time-traveled back to the slavery era in the American South. While we wait for that film to get an official release date, singer and actress Keke Palmer (Hustlers) is now attached to executive produce and star in a film called Alice that seems like a cross between Antebellum, Brie Larson s abduction drama Room (Certified Fresh at 93%), and M. Night Shyamalan s The Village (Rotten at 43%). We re making those comparisons because of its premise, reportedly based on a true story, which is about a woman who escapes from a life of servitude in 1800s Georgia only to discover that the year is actually 1973.8. ELISABETH MOSS REUNITES WITH HANDMAID S TALE DIRECTOR FOR NEW HORROR FILM(Photo by Ely Dassas/©Hulu)Although she first became famous as the First Daughter on TV s The West Wing and in AMC s Mad Men, not to mention her box office hit this year with the remake of The Invisible Man, Elisabeth Moss is arguably still most famous in 2020 for her starring role in the acclaimed series The Handmaid s Tale. For her next film, Moss will be reuniting with one of her Handmaid s Tale directors, Daina Reid, for a supernatural horror film called Run Rabbit Run. In the film, Moss will play a a fertility doctor who believes firmly in life and death, but after noticing the strange behavior of her young daughter, must challenge her own values and confront a ghost from her past. 9. JOJO RABBIT S THOMASIN MCKENZIE TO STAR IN BALLET MOVIE JOIKA  (Photo by Scott Green/©Bleecker Street Media)For his World War II satire Jojo Rabbit, director Taika Waititi cast established stars (Scarlett Johansson, Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell) for supporting roles, but went with three relative newcomers for the film s young leads. In addition to the two boys (Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo, and Archie Yates as Yorki), the female lead in Jojo Rabbit was Thomasin McKenzie, who actually did have her first breakout role in 2018 in the indie film Leave No Trace (Certified Fresh at 100%). For her next role, McKenzie will star in Joika, based on the true story of an American ballet dancer named Joy Womack who was a member of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. The young actress is reportedly already training for her role as a ballet dancer in the production, which will reportedly use new technology to allow the team to work together in the post-COVID-19 pandemic environment.10. OLIVIA MUNN TO STAR IN HER OWN SCI-FI ACTION MOVIE CALLED REPLAY (Photo by Dan McFadden/©Millennium Entertainment courtesy Everett Collection)Olivia Munn may have at one point expected to have a potential superhero franchise when she co-starred as Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse (Rotten at 47%), except that the X-Men franchise as we previously knew it is pretty much dead now following Disney s acquisition of Fox, and Psylocke didn t return in the next movie, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, anyway. Instead, Munn appears to have a chance at another new role with a concept that seems franchise-friendly, as she will produce and star in a science fiction action movie called Replay about a woman armed with illegal, bleeding-edge technology who attempts to change the past in order to save the life of her murdered husband. Replay is being produced by Dark Castle Entertainment, the production company behind such recent films as Ghost Ship, Orphan, Suburbicon, and House of Wax.

She speaks several languages, understands advanced science and technology and was trained as a high level warrior.”Development Updates: Disney+, HBO Max, More(Photo by Ben Rothstein/Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp./Courtesy Everett Collection)Production has begun on the Disney+ series Love, Simon, based on the film (and novel) of the same name.

News from Westeros and Deadwood from HBO, 90210 reunion event news, Star Trek plots a new course on Nickelodeon, and more of the biggest TV news from this week.TOP STORYGoodbye, WesterosWhile HBO is well into production on one of the Game of Thrones prequel scripts it commissioned last year, one of the potential spin-off series is dead. Game of Thrones writer and co-executive producer Bryan Cogman, who has written 11 episodes of the series (including Sunday’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”), confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that his spin-off is no longer in the works.“I was developing one of the successor shows with George [R.R. Martin]. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane [Goldman], whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way,” he told the publication“It is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros,” he added. “It s wonderfully bittersweet. I ll certainly miss it, but I m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I ve learned. I ve learned more than I could possibly imagine from eight seasons of this thing. It s been wonderful to look back and watch some of the old episodes, and see some of our old friends at the premiere recently, and to know that we ve done something good. We ve done good work that people enjoy. That s all an entertainer can ever hope for. I m eager to start the next chapter, but a part of my heart will always live with Game of Thrones.”Shannen Dougherty Joins Beverly Hills, 90210 Event Series(Photo by Earl Gibson III/Getty Images)Former Beverly Hills, 90210 good girl-gone-bad Brenda Walsh will appear in Fox s six-episode event series BH90210, the network announced on Friday. Shannen Doherty, who played Brenda in the teen drama, joins her former co-stars – Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling – in the irreverent new series airing this summer. This time when the cast gets back together, it will come with a big twist: the seven former teen idols will be playing heightened versions of themselves, Fox said in an announcement. The series description promises drama inspired by the actors own real lives and relationships with each other: Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Shannen, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends, and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off? BH90210 will be produced by CBS Television Studios and Fox Entertainment. Doherty will executive-produce alongside Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, Patrick Sean Smith, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering. The series was conceived by Alberghini, Chessler, Spelling and Garth. New Trailers, C suckersHBO has finally released the first trailer for its long- (long-, long-, long-) anticipated Deadwood continuation, titled Deadwood: The Movie. The feature-length film, which debuts May 31, will star the series’ entire original cast (Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, and more) and picks up 10 years after the series finale. It also includes the series’ trademark penchant for blue language, but you’ll have to wait approximately 40 seconds for the first c sucker to drop. Deadwood ran for three seasons from 2004-2006, and the stars and creator David Milch have spent the intervening 13 years fielding questions from reporters and fans about a follow-up. In just one month (and change), that follow-up film will finally be here.Other new trailers this week include:a full-length peek at DC Universe’s Swamp Thing — see it herean extended look at Hulu’s George Clooney–produced adaptation of Catch-22 — see it hereand another look at Epix’s Batman pre-prequel about the caped crusader’s butler, Pennyworth. — see it here.
After its first rebellious and cuss-riddled steps into a new DC Comics world, Titans returns this week to wrap up its hanging season 1 plotline — the arrival of Trigon (Seamus Dever). But once it does, the series will blow the roof off of its more contained plot to reintroduce the Titans as a team and explore more of its past, even as newer members join the reformed group.Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites), Rachel Roth/Raven (Teagan Croft), Koriand r/Starfire (Anna Diop), Gar Logan/Beast Boy (Ryan Potter
There weren t any La La Land/Moonlight moments, nor were there any outrageous oversights. There were, however, a few surprise winners — Zendaya’s trophy for Euphoria (complete with breathless, excited acceptance speech) especially — making the show a little more exciting than sure thing after sure thing winning.Actually, even the non-winners had memorable moments: Ramy Youssef posted a video of a hazmat-suited PA waving through his window after he lost his category to Eugene Levy, proving those Kia commercials weren t completely kidding; they really did bring Emmy trophies to the homes of nominees — in the Los Angeles area, at least.when you lose the emmy pic.twitter.com/ECkbGcoHBA ramy youssef (@ramy) September 21, 2020But the biggest moments of the show included historic wins, essential workers, and literal fire. Read up on all the winners here, and read on for the biggest moments from the 72nd Emmy Awards.1. FIRE!(Photo by ABC/Image Group LA)Award show openings are difficult in the best of circumstances, let alone when they re produced virtually from an empty basketball arena in the middle of a global pandemic. And while Kimmel s joke monologue started weird — why wasn t he acknowledging that all of the celebrity reaction shots were from old ceremonies? — once he finally did, and introduced all of the technological feats the producers were performing in order to bring this remotely produced live TV show to air, things went much smoother. Well, except for the first award presentation — after bringing out pal Jennifer Aniston to assist, the duo s Covid-precaution bit ended with Kimmel dousing the winner s envelope in Lysol and lighting it on fire. Aniston swiftly blasted a fire extinguisher on the mini inferno, but the kindling proved to be a little TOO good — she had to blast it an extra two times when the flames continued to burn. We could hear nervous stage direction coming from off camera.Related: 2020 Emmy Winners: Your Full List of Winners from the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards2. SCHITT S SWEEPThe rise of Schitt s Creek from niche cable network Canadian import to Netflix hit to Emmys sweep is one even the writers of the kindhearted, optimistic sitcom might not have scripted. But the series arc — culminating in a sweep of all seven major categories (series, all four main acting categories, writing, and directing) — is ultra satisfying for a show that championed acceptance and heart above all else. The closest other shows have come to achieving this feat is Taxi s five wins (out of six noms) in 1981, and All in the Family s six wins (out of seven) in 1972.With Catherine O Hara, Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy winning their #Emmys tonight, that means our little Canadian show is the first comedy OR drama to ~ever~ sweep all four acting categories, and that is absolutely wild 🇨🇦 pic.twitter.com/fEUnaLoDBr Schitt s Creek (@SchittsCreek) September 21, 2020Catherine O Hara and Levy getting some richly deserved TV accolades was satisfying enough, but their TV children Annie Murphy and Dan Levy, too? Even better. Plus, the emotion shared between Eugene and Dan, co-creators and real-life father and son, was so genuine you could feel the love through the screen. In fact, the show s remote celebration in Canada was filled with joy, with every cast and crew member in attendance getting emotional as the show continued to take home awards.3. BLACK HOLLYWOOD MAKES HISTORYAnthony Anderson was at the Staples Center to perform a whole bit with Kimmel about how this year s Emmys in particular were the blackest yet — about 34 percent of this year s nominees were Black — and what a shame it was that he and his cohort were not able to celebrate together. Although Anderson didn t win himself, Regina King’s expected win (wearing a shirt that paid tribute to Breonna Taylor) kicked off a successful night for Watchmen (her costar Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took home a trophy, as did the show itself and its writing); Uzo Aduba beat several Hollywood heavy-hitters for Mrs. America while also in a Breonna Taylor shirt; and Disney star–turned–prestige cable ingenue Zendaya s Drama Actress win for Euphoria was perhaps the biggest upset of the night. Her win makes her the second Black actress in 72 years of Emmys history to win in that category, following Viola Davis. And let s not forget Oprah and Chris Rock introducing Tyler Perry, the recipient of this year s Governor s Award, who was present at the Staples Center to accept his trophy in person (and deliver a moving speech about perseverance and his grandmother s quilt).4. SPACE!The existence of award shows is essentially a way for Hollywood to pat themselves on the back, and there was plenty of that in this show. But the producers also managed to pay tribute to essential workers and people doing incredibly important jobs in this time, including doctors, nurses, teachers, mail carriers, UPS guys, and even astronauts. Commander Christopher Cassidy filmed a segment from the International Space Station, though Jeremy Irons was nowhere in sight.5. FRIENDS REUNION(Photo by ABC)Sorry, HBO Max — that long-awaited Friends reunion (pushed a couple times now due to Covid) will be overshadowed by Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow popping into a Zoom frame together for a bit about them living together and watching the Emmys. It was a cute moment, especially since the three women are clearly IRL friends and looked radiant as they hung out together. Jason Bateman, whose random appearances was a running gag in the show and who is known to hang out with the Friends gang, was there too. What were your favorite Emmys moments? A screen siren in the most literal of terms, Kellermann (often credited as Kellerman, with a single n ) was a swimmer-turned-actress who arguably stands now as a precursor for the kind of crossover success that has marked the careers of the likes of fellow former athletes Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Indeed, like those two Hollywood stars, Kellermann’s physique was instrumental to her entry into and success in cinema, making her a pioneer of the jock film star that seems all too common today.Kellermann was first seen on the big screen in short films like Miss Annette Kellerman (1909), where she showed off her swimming technique and her then-famous high dives. But it would be her work on feature films like Neptune’s Daughter (1914) and A Daughter of the Gods (1916), the first ever million dollar picture, that cemented her as a marquee name in the budding film industry. Only a few of Kellermann’s 30-odd film appearances survive to this day – both Neptune s Daughter and A Daughter of the Gods have been lost – but they’re enough, along with her cultural impact as a health advocate, a one-piece swimsuit trailblazer, and an intrepid athlete, to have made her an indelible part of early film history.Born in 1886 in Sydney, Australia to a pair of musicians (her father was a violinist, her mother a pianist), Kellermann needed to wear steel braces on her legs as a child. Likely due to polio, this is what first pushed her to take up swimming at age 6, as a way of strengthening her legs. By the time she was 13 she’d completely rehabilitated those future money-earners and by the time she was 16 she’d taken up swimming in earnest, winning meets and breaking records in New South Wales state championships.(Photo by Hulton Archive / Stringer / Getty Images)Kellermann soon became a sensation in Australia, alternating between participating in swimming and diving exhibitions as well as breaking more records during competitions. In 1905, she and her father moved to England where her long-distance swims earned her plenty of press; she was even sponsored by The Daily Mirror to attempt to swim the English Channel, a feat she’d try two more times in those years without ever being wholly successful. Moving away and eventually retiring from long-distance swimming, Kellermann set her eyes on more lucrative ventures that still made great use of her talents. That’s how Kellermann ended up across the Atlantic. Oft-advertised as “The Perfect Woman” – posters for her appearances usually included measurements that showed her body metrics matched the Venus de Milo’s – Kellermann was a vaudeville sensation in the early 1910s. Her elaborate synchronized swimming performances attracted audiences in Chicago, Boston, New York, and eventually all over Europe and in her native Australia. It was during this time that Kellermann gained even more notoriety for an alleged 1907 arrest on a Boston beach. While contemporary women’s swimwear consisted of a rather bulky dress/pantaloon combination (often accompanied by long black stockings and bathing slippers), Kellermann had opted to wear a fitted one-piece costume that ended in shorts above her knees – the kind she wore during her exhibitions – which led to her being cited for indecency. (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)The incident, which remains disputed, nevertheless speaks to Kellermann’s advocacy against such strictures on women’s bodies. Advocating for sleeker swimsuits that were less restricting, she led the way toward relaxing Victorian-era norms on what was appropriate beachwear, eventually selling her own branded “Annette Kellermann Sun-Kist’ swimsuits” in U.S. stores from around 1914 to the late 1930s, all but making her name synonymous with the one-piece swimsuit we know today. A savvy entertainer keyed into a rapidly changing audience, Kellermann knew she had the wherewithal to diversify into other potentially lucrative endeavors. While her first foray on the stage (in the short-lived London production of Undine) in 1912 wasn’t a good fit, her eventual move into feature-length films soon turned her into a bona fide movie star. Her first feature film, Neptune’s Daughter, was produced by Carl Laemmle of Universal Film Producing Company; based on an idea pitched by Kellermann herself, the Captain Leslie T. Peacock-scripted and Herbert Brenon-directed adventure film followed a young mermaid intent on avenging her sister, who died when caught by fishermen’s nets. With a fantastical background and even a romantic subplot that echoed a certain Hans Christian Anderson folk tale, Neptune’s Daughter was crafted around Kellermann’s talents. Not only were her swimming and diving skills front and center in elaborate underwater set pieces, but that same “perfect body” that had lured vaudeville audiences to her shows was here yet again presented as a selling point. As Variety noted in its review of the film, men were likely to watch the film several times, “if only for the purpose of having another flash at the divine form of Kellermann, in this instance draped only by her hair, as the mystic power of the Witch s shell transforms her from a mermaid into a regular girl.”(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Her second feature, A Daughter of the Gods – reportedly the first ever million-dollar film production – further established Kellermann as a performer whose sheer physicality could command the screen. Yet again playing a water-based creature, the Australian swimmer-turned-actress turned heads for what’s considered the very first nude scene by a major star. Still, critics at the time admired her acting as much as her physicality: “Miss Kellermann aside from her daring feats, acted with great skill and gave a most creditable impersonation,” Moving Picture World noted in its review of A Daughter of the Gods.Kellermann’s creative input on these early productions, as well as later films like Queen of the Sea (1918), What Women Love (1920), and Venus of the South Seas (1924), put her in a league of equally influential film screen stars like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. The many death-defying stunts she performed – including jumping into pools with live crocodiles and diving from rocky cliffs, often shooting on location in Jamaica and Bermuda – established her as an action star whose showmanship and athleticism always went hand in hand. It’s no surprise to find that, decades later, another swimmer-turned-actress (MGM’s Esther Williams) would star in a musical biopic on her life in 1952’s Million Dollar Mermaid. Kellermann was a legend in her own time, a true pioneer who managed to make a name for herself with her body but never let herself be reduced to it. While most of her films have been lost, her extraordinary stunts surviving only in film reviews and printed features, she remains a pivotal figure in early cinema that deserves to be better known and appreciated. What Critics Said About Kellermann s Lost Films When They Were Released: A revelation (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)“In several of the scenes Miss Kellerman, in white, close-fitting tights, gives entertaining exhibitions of swimming and diving, her graceful form standing out against the brushwood like a marble statue as she poses before she dives.” – The Daily Telegraph (Sydney)“[Kellerman] proves herself an accomplished actress, a mistress of the terpsichorean art, and an expert swordswoman, well worthy to be wooed and won by the King of the country she lands in.” – The Age (Melbourne) “There is one scene that particularly will live in the memory. Annette, a mortal, feels the lure of the water. Behind a bush in the forest she discards her peasant dress. Out darts a white-tighted figure. From a vegetation-faced cliff over an inland bit of still water Annette performs the evolutions that have thrilled her audiences in settings far different.” – George Blaisdell, Moving Picture World “Miss Kellerman, in a recent interview, said she did not wish to go in for swimming and diving any longer. She wanted a play in which she could have a dramatic part so she might be judged for her histrionic merits. In this production she has proven her right to such consideration.” – A. Danson Michell, Motion Picture News“The usual spectacular dives Miss Kellermann has become famed for are performed during the picture, and she gives visual evidence also of her remarkable ability to swim and of endurance, always in the water with a fish-tail (as a mermaid) that prevents the employment of her feet for assistance, swimming only with her hands. As a picture actress, Miss Kellerman is a revelation.” – Variety(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)“Some admirable light and shade effects are revealed in the photographed scenery during the progress of the story, which has been ingenious ly developed and produced, and the performance throughout of Miss Kellermann as the child of the seas is as skillful as it is graceful and refined.” – The Daily Telegraph (Sydney)“Miss Kellermann aside from her daring feats, acted with great skill and gave a most creditable impersonation.” – Moving Picture World“Herbert Brenon placed his confidence in the appeal of the mass scene and Miss Kellermann s physical charm and skill in diving and swimming to carry the fanciful story along to success. His confidence, it would seem, was well placed.” – Motography“The beautiful figure of Annette Kellermann and her matchless skill as an amphibienne are made the most of in A Daughter of the Gods, the elaborate, spectacular and somewhat monotonous photofable which was unfolded for the first time last evening at the Lyric Theatre.” – The New York TimesOn an Apple device?

Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: It’s interesting that you mentioned Goodfellas, because so much of that film is casting as well as everything else. In this film you had an incredible cast. Just how did you get this dream cast together? I wished upon a star. It really is unbelievable. I met Jennifer first, so we cast Jennifer at the end of 2017, so it s been a long journey to try to build the world and fill out the movie. But she was Ramona right out of the gate. I don t usually think about actors when I m writing anything, but the minute I stopped and looked at it, to who was on the page, it was just so clear that Ramona was Jennifer Lopez. And then it was about finding Destiny and finding the right person and the right dynamic and chemistry that they would have with each other. I was so enchanted by Constance s performance in Crazy Rich Asians, and I met her in person and thought she s a really deep, intelligent, funny person that I couldn t wait to see next to Jennifer and see that kind of sisterly dynamic form between them. [Keke Palmer] was someone who I d wanted to work with for a long time; I ve just been a fan of hers. And, you know, Lizzo was someone I had been messaging on Instagram for like a year. So there was a lot of that. There was certainly some chasing that was made a whole lot easier once J-Lo was on board. But yeah, Madeline Brewer was someone… I was just a real big fan of Cam and was hoping that she would be a part of it.Trace Lysette tweeted at me a year ago. We met for lunch and I wrote her this role because I just think she s fabulous – enormous fan of hers. Mette Towley was someone I had met with about a year before that. Jacqueline Frances – who s known as Jacq The Stripper on Instagram – she s a stand-up comedian and a great advocate and voice for the community. So I just felt like I wanted to see all of these people in a locker room together… You know, Cardi s obviously a superstar, but to watch her be just one of the girls in the locker room… [it] was a thrill to see them all interact together. How fun were those locker-room scenes, and the Christmas party scene, to shoot? Because, everyone seems to be having the best time.I mean, I had the best time. I certainly did. Yeah, they were full of joy. Christmas was Christmas. It felt like Christmas morning. It really was just so joyful to have everybody together and felt like story time and everyone s sitting around together, and you know, we ve really tried to keep everything as alive as possible. I encouraged improv. Obviously, there was a script to stick to, but I wanted every scene to feel alive and like people are talking and talking over each other. So we had a tougher time in editing, but we wanted to make sure that we shot that with that feeling of electricity, and that was so much fun to honestly watch everyone interact with each other. The dancing scenes were especially fun. The club was our last week of shooting and everyone was so excited to get there and blow it out. It was pretty enormous. We had 300 extras and 50 dancers and 250 men who were, thankfully, incredibly respectful and had myself and a comfort consultant, Jacq the Stripper, Jacqueline Frances, walking around, making sure everybody felt safe and comfortable while also still trying to capture that aggression and living, breathing, feeling of a strip club. So it was a blast, actually.Thumbnail image: Phil Bray/©Weinstein Company, © Sony Pictures Classics, © Paramount, © Warner Bros. PicturesHustlers is currently in theaters.
