“Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” (55%, season 5, episode 6) feature low-key weddings. In fact, the latter is the lowest-scoring GoT episode, largely due, it seems, to Ramsay Bolton s deplorable acts after his wedding to Sansa Stark.Tip: Big weddings are more popular with critics. Keep the slaughter and violence broad and relatively impersonal. The Longer the Episode, the Higher the Tomatometer Average(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Only 12 episodes in the series have running times of 60 minutes or more, but they have a very Fresh 95% average. That’s slightly higher than the 94.1% average of the shorter episodes that don’t cross the one-hour mark. Four of the six GoT season 8 episodes have running times of more than an hour — and they’re all a super-sized 78 minutes or more. Only two previous episodes (season 7’s “Beyond the Wall” and “The Dragon and the Wolf”) have gone beyond the 75-minute mark, and the results are an 85.5% average Tomatometer score — which is almost Rotten by GoT standards. The rest of the episodes average 95%.Fortunately, four of season 8 s six episodes will be longer than 60 minutes. The Writer With the Highest Average Might Surprise You(Photo by Macall B. Polay/HBO)Showrunners Weiss and Benioff wrote 46 of the 67 episodes together, and have a 94.8% Tomatometer average. The writers who contributed to the other 21 episodes include Bryan Cogman (10 episodes), George R.R. Martin himself (four episodes), Vanessa Taylor (three episodes), Dave Hill (three episodes), and Jane Espenson (one episode, written alongside Weiss and Benioff). While Espenson’s single episode earned a 100%, the others average around the same: Taylor at 95%, Hill at 94.3%, Martin at 95%, and Cogman at 93.8%. (It s worth noting that without the season 5 outlier “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken,” however, Cogman’s average for his remaining nine episodes would be the second-highest at 97.4% after Espenson s single entry.)Taylor went on to write the screenplay for the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water, and Espenson became the co-executive producer on Once Upon a Time. Martin, of course, continues to frustrate rabid fans demanding his next book. He s also collaborating on the show s prequel series, starring Naomi Watts, Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, and more.Related: Everything We Know About HBO s Game of Thrones Prequel”With Directors, the First Is the Best(Photo by HBO)Only one of the 19 directors who have tackled GoT episodes so far has averaged 100% — that’s Tim Van Patten, who helmed the first two installments of the first season. The veteran TV director (The Sopranos, The Wire, Black Mirror, and plenty more prestige series) was brought in to reshoot the disastrous pilot episode that was a deemed a “MASSIVE PROBLEM.” Van Patten helped pull off the “biggest rescue in Hollywood history” by smoothing many of the rough edges and successfully introducing the characters and world to the audience. Under his supervision “Winter Is Coming” and “The Kingsroad” laid a perfect foundation for the show to grow. The other top directors include Alex Graves (six episodes, 98.8%), Daniel Minahan (five episodes, 97.2%), David Nutter (six episodes, 96.5%), David Petrarca (two episodes, 96%), and Miguel Sapochnik (four episodes, 96%). Director Alan Taylor, who has directed the most Game of Thrones episodes, shares the distinction of having directed four episodes with 100% Tomatometer scores, along with Graves. (Taylor s Beyond the Wall, while still high at 82%, brought down his average to 94.4% — which is like complaining that your New York City penthouse apartment on Central Park sucks because its floor-to-ceiling windows only wrap around three sides of the building.)Nutter, Sapochnik, and Benioff and Weiss are directing the final six episodes of season 8. With four 100% episodes between them, they should certainly be able to find a way for GoT to go out on top with a 95% or above finale.Tyrion Lannister Drinks, Knows Things, and Plays an Integral Part in the 100% Tomatometer Rated EpisodesTyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) is the go-to guy for 100% episodes because he’s appeared in 21 of the 22 perfect episodes and played a major part in the sections mentioned above. He was heavily featured in director Tim Van Patten’s two 100% episodes and in each of the fourth episodes with 100% scores. He also played an integral part in the two 100% Tomatometer episodes written by George R.R. Martin that feature battles ( Blackwater ) and very expensive weddings ( The Lion and the Rose ). What makes Tyrion the MVP are his appearances in Blackwater and Battle of the Bastards. They are highest-rated episodes that take place in only one or two locations (a very good thing). Basically, you want Tyrion appearing in any episode for any reason.Nudity, Major Deaths, Pie, Direwolves and CameosAfter sorting through all the GoT episodes, we learned there are several side elements that make positive Tomatometer contributions to the series. The episodes featuring pie consumption (99.1%), famous musician cameos (97.1%), Stark or Lannister death at a wedding (100%), or a direwolf being killed onscreen (99% Summer in The Door and Grey Wind in The Rains of Castamere ) have great Tomatometer averages. However, we did learn that certain favorite GoT elements or characters don’t move the Tomatometer needle; for instance, episodes featuring main or recurring characters getting naked (93.7%) or being killed (94.4%) don’t have the best Tomatometer averages comparatively.Appearances of the Night King also trend lower at 93.4%. Only two episodes have a 100% score, revealing that it s actually best to feature him during a battle episode ( Hardhome ) or a wedding episode ( The Lion and the Rose ).How to Build a Perfect 100% Fresh Game of Thrones EpisodeBased on the statistics and observations above, we’ve come up with an equation that adds up to a perfect Game of Thrones episode:Make it 61-62 minutes long + air it as the fourth episode + hire Tim Van Patten to direct it + include a major battle or fight in which the heroes suffer major losses + tack on a very expensive wedding + make sure George R.R. Martin writes the script + include Tyrion Lannister + limit the story to one or two locations + kill a direwolf + eat a pie = 100% Fresh Tomatometer score.Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season premieres Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. on HBO.Like this? Yes. While the story remains the same, the technical upgrade makes for a more immersive experience. What Critics Say Now: It doesn t reinvent the wheel, but Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution looks phenomenal thanks to its updated visuals, and the action-packed and epic battles help make this the perfect Pokémon movie for fans. – Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comHave a look at the top-to-bottom overhaul:Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is now streaming on Netflix.亚博APP官网有信誉This week in TV news includes a major Star Wars story, new trailers, a Hemingway adaptation, and plenty of casting news.Ewan McGregor is in talks to reprise his role as a younger version of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a potential event series for Disney+. 4.65.8 2月喜迎Ryan Reynolds stars in Free Guy, a movie about a video game character who suddenly breaks from his expected monotony to reach his full potential. And as it turns out, it’s also a movie that breaks from expectations to reach its full potential. That’s the consensus from the surprisingly very positive reviews from the new action-comedy, which hits theaters on August 13.While familiar in its premise and the latest movie to capitalize on a studio’s willingness to mash up famous pop culture IP, Free Guy is said to be a lot of fun, with tons of action, laughs, and heart, plus a bunch of surprises that critics aren’t divulging. The only place where reviews really disagree, though, is in where they land on Taika Waititi’s scene-chewing villainous role. Here’s what critics are saying about Free Guy:Is Free Guy more than it seems? “Free Guy is way better than you may have been expecting — in fact, it’s absolutely joyful.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“A very pleasant surprise.” Mark Cassidy, ComicBookMovie.com“Free Guy is surprisingly far more complex than expected.” Robert Daniels, The Playlist“I never expected to see a film that hilariously deals with philosophical conundrums the way The Good Place used to.” Sherin Nicole, idobi.com“One of the summer’s bigger surprises.” Joey Magidson, Awards RadarHow does it compare to other video game movies?“The best-ever video-game movie.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“One of the best video game movies that Hollywood has managed to churn out.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“[One] of the best video game-themed movies in recent memory.” Germain Lussier, io9.com(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Will it appeal to gamers?“It actually understands what makes video games tick.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“There are numerous Easter eggs for gamers to find in the background details and, crucially, it s done with love for the culture, rather than any cynicism.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“Very clearly a movie aimed at young gamers… and for a film aimed at gamers, it seems pretty oblivious to what that audience actually wants in a game.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects“When branching off the core story and trying to bring in certain elements, gamers may be less impressed with some of the gag choices.” Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentWhat about non-gamers?“While it’s very respectful and true to gaming culture, it’s one of those movies that almost anyone could watch and find enjoyment in.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“If you’re not into video games, I wouldn’t say that’s a hurdle for Free Guy any more than not being into Lego is a hurdle for The Lego Movie.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“Free Guy is fun and visually stunning enough to hold the interest of anyone looking for a literal escape to something far away from the real world.” Catherine Springer, AwardsWatch“Free Guy is nothing if not a movie that wins you over in spite of your better judgment and best defenses.” David Ehrlich, IndieWire(Photo by 20th Century Studios)How is the action?“The film is loaded with wall-to-wall action, albeit the cartoonish kind that makes this solid family entertainment.” Chris Bumbray, JoBlo“The action is used not just to entertain, but to develop characters, which in turn endears them to the audience.” Germain Lussier, io9.comAnd the visuals?“The world-building is incredible… The set design and VFX are impeccable and engaging.” Yolanda Machado, Nerdist“They’re just flashy enough to make the world of Free City seem both fun to live in and kind of real.” Germain Lussier, io9.comWhat about the script?“Incredibly uplifting.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“However predictable, the journey to get there makes up for it by being akin to a rocket ship.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“So much energy has been poured into the creation of Free City that the plot suffered as a result.”  Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“If it sounds complicated, plot-wise, that s because it is, overly so, to the point that the film has to stop a couple of times to explain itself to some extent, although certain plot points remain unexplained, perhaps because the credited screenwriters could not remember the narrative point and/or lost the cocktail napkin on which the script was originally jotted down upon.” Peter Martin, Screen Anarchy“Free Guy is the unfortunate example that fails to add anything new… It neglects to build character and narrative of its own.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Is it funny?“One of the funniest movies of the year.” Robert Daniels, The Playlist“Hilarious thanks to a few laugh-out-loud surprises courtesy of the merger between 20th Century Studios and the Walt Disney Company.” Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerBut does it have heart?“It really believes in itself…there’s a real, beating heart beneath all that plastic packaging of Free Guy” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“Will make your heart swell and burst.” Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerDoes the r
OK —Winnick: But I will tell you this: It was definitely my highlight of working on it. I asked Michael Hirst, I want three things out of my directorial debut: Give me a big event. Give me something epic and amazing. You will see that is actually in the trailers right now. So there is a big event. I wanted character-driven material that I can push the actors, my fellow costars, to new levels that the audience hasn t seen them do before. And I m happy to say that I definitely put Alexander Ludwig through the ringer. And even Marco and Jordan — Hvitserk and Ubbe. The third thing is just coming from a martial art background and doing my own stunts and being passionate about the fight choreography, I asked him for a big fight, a big epic battle, and you will see that as well.(Photo by Jonathan Hession and History)Now that you re facing the the tail end of your series, what will you miss most about your time on the show?Winnick: I don t miss getting into the costume hair and makeup, because that was always a process. We tried to get it down at the end. That wig was a challenge because we were shooting in high definition and you only get X amount of space to glue it on. Or even the prosthetics with the latex around the eyes — I have very sensitive skin, so the process was definitely a process. What I won t miss: The coffee in Ireland s not the best. I ll tell you that. They made instant coffee. Our craft table was pretty always kind of scarce, but it kept us lean. But yeah, the instant coffee I m not a huge fan of.What s coming up next for you? Winnick: I ve had a really busy year. Really excited to say that I ve done three projects, three different independent movies. There s an incredible script called Flag Day, written by Jez Butterworth (who just won the Tony for Ferryman), and Sean Penn directed and starred in. I play his wife, and our daughter is played by his real daughter, Dylan Penn. We ve got Regina King in this, you ve got Miles Teller, we have Josh Brolin. It was really an amazing experience on set to work with Sean, and especially becoming now a director myself — I just did a show on Netflix; I directed, Wu Assassins — but it s nice just to see him [work]. He s so accomplished and brilliant as a director and knows what it takes to get the performance out of you, but also aesthetically knows what is pleasing and what he wants. I wanted to really see him work and spend time with him on set and create something that hopefully people will realize how special it is, because I have a place in my heart for that as well. And to go through like three decades, we went through 60s, 70s, and 80s, and to have that physical change of — there s prosthetics, there s hair changes — It was a very interesting movie, and I m really passionate about that one. Great experience.I did a movie with Liam Neeson I just finished called Minuteman. I ve been a fan of his since back in the day, obviously, Taken and Schindler s List. He s also from Ireland. I played his daughter. That s coming out. And did a movie this summer also with Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart, more of a conspiracy theory, written and directed by a female director, April Mullen, so it s nice to be able to support a female storyteller.(Photo by Jonathan Hession and History)Speaking of women in power, Lagertha has been such a huge influence on women because she s such a strong character. She s one of the most powerful women on television. How do you feel about portraying a character like that? What are some of the responses you ve gotten about being her from women?Winnick: I am still blown away when I meet fans that are diehard fans, and such loyal fans of Lagertha, just because it s — not just women and girls, it s men too that really look up to her, respect her, like her. So it s nice that it s reached both genders. But more importantly, it s also around the world. I ve been lucky enough to travel for the last few years. I was in India, I was in Brazil, I ve been in Argentina, Canada, and all over Europe, really, and all around in different cultures people from all around the world, not only recognize her and me, I guess, but they also really feel the same way, and then really feel that there s a part of them in Lagertha, or they look up to her, and that s been remarkable to see.Even in India, you can go to different villages and people, they live on their Netflix. And Philippines, people don t even have running water, but they all have cell phones and they watch Vikings on their cellphones. It was just amazing just to see how it can inspire people everywhere. It s a little strange when you see somebody, when they have your face tattooed on their bodies. That s a little surreal because I feel kind of uncomfortable with it just because it s like, Hey, you re stuck with me for life. No, but on one hand you can t ask for a bigger compliment than to have such loyal fans.On the flip side it s also made it hard to find projects that I m also as inspired, and work with writers that can write such a complex, strong, yet vulnerable character. It s been a challenge. I ve read a lot of scripts that I m not wanting to sign on to because I feel that the characters aren t — or the woman character is underwritten or their voice isn t as multi-dimensional as I would want it to be. And I think we still have a long way to go, and hopefully we encourage more female writers, female directors, and female producers to be able to tell those stories. Have the men do the same as well.(Photo by Bernard Walsh and History)Are you saying that Michael Hirst has ruined you for life?Winnick: I m just going to have be in a Michael Hirst movie for the rest of my life. How about that? Not really. Yeah. He set the bar really high, and I wouldn t want it any other way. Especially in TV when you re signing up for multiple months, if not years, of your life, you want to make sure there s a character you can really sink your teeth into and be inspired.I learned a lot from Lagertha. I really, truly did. And the truth of the matter is, if I was 100-percent honest with you, I ve yet to really say goodbye. I actually have a hard time watching it. I haven t been able to watch the episodes in this season. I prepared, obviously, as a director to watch certain ones, but as a whole, it s just so close to my heart still. And now that everybody knows that this season s finished, I think maybe next year I ll finally get a chance to sit down and binge-watch all of them, but it s still too fresh for me. It feels like you re saying goodbye to a big part of yourself and life. It s hard to say. You go through a mourning process a little bit because, as you know, the show ended. The fans are there mourning with you, but, you know, Valhalla. Winnick: To end on an up note, this season s been amazing. It s going to be surprising. It s definitely going to be a bunch of shockers, and the fans will not be disappointed. They re going to be ecstatic when they see this season.Vikings returns for its final season on Wednesday, December 4 at 9/8C on History.
(Photo by Bethesda Game Studios)While there s been plenty of movies, books, and comics set in post-apocalyptic worlds, few have been as unique as those in the numerous 50s-flavored Fallout games. Now, Amazon Prime is planning to bring that unique perspective to television, and with some help from people who made the games. And while we don t much about the show yet, what we have learned makes us excited to wander the wasteland again. The world of the Fallout games is one in which the art-deco style of the 1950s persisted, even as we developed robots and nuclear-powered cars. But so did the atomic bombs, as the world learns first hand when a nuclear war decimates the planet in 2077. Good thing people in the 50s were also big on bomb shelters, which is how some people managed to survive in underground shelters called Vaults. In most of the games, it s been 200 or so years since the bombs dropped. What remains of the world is a wasteland full of mutants, giant insects, zombie-like ghouls, and other irradiated wildlife. But there are also some regular people, including a widespread military organization called The Brotherhood of Steel whose members wear suits of armor similar to what Tony Stark built in the first Iron Man movie.(Photo by Bethesda Game Studios)As for a more specific plot the Fallout show may follow, well, that depends on which of the recent games they base the show on assuming they even follow the plot of the game series and don t just create an original story in the same fictional universe, but in a previously unplayable location. If they do follow the games, though, they have a couple of interesting options. In 2008 s Fallout 3, a 19-year-old kid (created by the player) who grew up in a Vault near Washington, D.C. leaves to explore the world of 2277 in an attempt to find their father, who had escaped the Vault as well. Then there s 2015 s Fallout 4, which is set in the remnants of Boston and its suburbs. In that game, a survivor from 2077, who had been in suspended animation for 200 years, is trying to find the baby that was stolen from them while they were asleep.Amazon could also opt to base the show on the most recent installment, 2018 s Fallout 76. Set in 2102, just twenty-five years after the war, that game follows someone who grew up in Vault 76 when it opens twenty-five years after the war, and the former residents head out to forge a new life for themselves in the remains of West Virginia.Granted, there are other scenarios and locations they could explore in the show. There s the Southern California setting of the original 1997 game, or the remains of Las Vegas from 2010 s Fallout: New Vegas. But given that those games were not made by Bethesda Game Studios — who made Fallout 3, 4, and 76, and who are overseeing the show — we re guessing the odds aren t good.Who are the creatives involved?(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)For the Fallout TV show, Amazon has employed the team of Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, who you may know from their work on HBO s Westworld. The two will be writing and executive producing the series through their company, Kilter Films the same roles they have on Westworld. Joining them is fellow executive producer Athena Wickham, who is also an executive producer on Westworld, and a fellow Kilter employee. As for names familiar to fans of the games, the Fallout series will also be executive produced by Todd Howard, who was the game director on Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, and the executive producer on Fallout 76 and the mobile spin-off Fallout Shelter, as well as James Altman, who is the director of director of publishing operations for Bethesda Softworks, the company that publishes the Fallout games. In a joint statement by Joy and Nolan issued when they announced the show, they said, Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios. As for the production, it will be handled by Kilter, Bethesda Softworks (who are new to TV), Bethesda Game Studios (also new to TV production), and Amazon Studios, whose TV credits include their own shows The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as HBO s Euphoria.Who Will Star in It?(Photo by JA/Everett Collection, Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)At the moment, no cast has been announced for the Fallout series, and given that we don t know which Fallout game will be the basis for it, or if the show will even be based on a specific Fallout game, it s near impossible to guess who they might cast. That said, there were some notable names in the games that could reprise their roles, or take on new ones. For instance, the aforementioned father that you re trying to find in Fallout 3 was voiced by Liam Neeson  yes, he of the Taken movies who has guested on such TV shows as Family Guy and The Orville. Other notable voice cast members from that game include Malcolm McDowell, who was the voice of President John Henry Eden and whose TV credits include Franklin Bash and the upcoming Truth Seekers, and Odette Annable, who was the voice of Amata Almodovar, and who s done runs on House and Supergirl. As for the other games, Fallout 76 s cast included Adrienne Barbeau, who s been on such shows as Carnivale and Maude, while Claudia Christian of Babylon 5 and 9-1-1 has voiced multiple characters in Fallout 4 and 76.Then there s Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, who has done voices in Fallout 4 as well as such other Bethesda games as Rage 2 and multiple installments of their Elder Scrolls series (and, we should note, is also married to Robert A. Altman, the Chairman and CEO of Bethesda s parent company, ZeniMax Media). They could even tap the voice cast of Fallout: New Vegas, which is part of the series and published by Bethesda Softworks, but was not made by Todd Howard and the good people at Bethesda Game Studios. Not only did that game feature the vocal talents of Friends star (and Fallout superfan) Mathew Perry, but it also featured such TV stars as Chuck s Zachary Levi (A.K.A. DC s Shazam!), Dave Foley from NewsRadio and The Kids in the Hall, Michael Dorn of Star Trek fame, Battlestar Galactica s Michael Hogan, Danny Trejo, Kris Kristofferson, and, of course, Wayne Newton. But the real question for fans of the games is whether or not they ll get Ron Perlman, who s been the narrator in nearly every Fallout game going back to the 1997 original, to welcome people to the series, or maybe even every episode, with his iconic opening line, War War never changes. When will it premiere?(Photo by Bethesda Game Studios)Of course, like all TV shows these days, the Fallout series is in a bit of a holding pattern thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. And as anyone who s played the game will tell you, it s not going to be a show you can shoot on Zoom. But it is one you could write and cast and perform other production tasks for, which is undoubtedly what Joy, Nolan, Howard, and the rest of the crew are doing in hopes of getting the show on air, er online soon. Maybe even next year.

Listen, we get it: This is the time of year that you want to be soaking up some sunshine and staying away from the various screens in your life. But with a crop of 13 certified fresh returning series like this, how can you resist!?Fear the Walking Dead 75% (AMC)What it is: An extension of the zombie apocalypse world of AMC mega-hit The Walking Dead that takes place in Los Angeles before the events of its mothership series and shows how city dwellers deal with the virus outbreak. Why you should watch it: It comes as little surprise that if you love The Walking Dead, you’ll love Fear. Its engrossing backdrop and cast of memorable characters is enough to tune in week to week, even through some of its more languid, slow-boiled pacing. Season 5 premieres June 2 on AMC. Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 40 hours (for the first four seasons)Luther 88% (BBC America)What it is: This BBC drama follows a brilliant Detective Chief Inspector (Idris Elba) who finds it difficult to strike a work-life balance as he struggles to toe the line between genius and madness. Why you should watch it: Elba is a four-time Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner for his spellbinding performance as DCI Luther, a magnetic cross between Sherlock Holmes and Columbo, in this gritty character study that adds a new dimension to the cop show genre. Season 5 premieres June 2 on BBC America.Where to watch it: Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 17 hours (for the first four seasons)Black Mirror 84% (Netflix)What it is: Basing its title on the black, reflective screen of a powered-off phone, tablet, or computer, this hit anthological Channel 4-turned-Netflix series from creator Charlie Brooker examines mankind’s dark, twisted (and thankfully, for now, hypothetical) future when beholden to modern technology. Why you should watch it: Few other sci-fi series today have proven as prescient on technology, sociology, and politics as Black Mirror, and it just keeps getting better. Plus, the Emmy-winning series has helped launch the careers of U.K. talent like Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Alex Lawther, Hayley Atwell, Domhnall Gleeson, and many others.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 20 hours (for the first four seasons)The Handmaid's Tale 83% (Hulu)What it is: Set in a not-too-distant future and adapted from Margaret Atwood’s acclaimed novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale is the harrowing imagining of a society where fertile women are forced into slavery to help procreate for the rich and powerful. A gripping and prescient look at modern patriarchy’s darkest corners (and possible futures), it truly is must-watch TV.Why you should watch it: Last year, The Handmaid’s Tale became the first-ever streaming series to take home the Television Academy’s top honor: the Emmy for best drama. We’d follow its formidable cast — Elisabeth Moss, Ann Dowd, Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, and Samira Wiley among them — and behind-the-camera creatives anywhere, maybe even to Gilead. Season 3 premieres on Hulu June 5. Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 19 hours (for the first two seasons)Designated Survivor 71% (Netflix)What it is: David Guggenheim’s political thriller imagines what would happen if an entire presidential administration was killed in one fell swoop and the low-ranking cabinet member tapped as designated survivor (a true-life position here played by Kiefer Sutherland) was sworn in as leader of the free world. Why you should watch it: This network drama-turned-Netflix reboot marks a welcomed return to TV for Sutherland, who, as the titular survivor Tom Kirkman, holds no prisoners as a man between a rock and hard place. Paired with crackling scripts and an excellent ensemble, Designated Survivor is a mile-a-minute thrill-ride and a worthy follow-up to 24. Season 3 premieres on Netflix June 7.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 30 hours (for the first two seasons)Big Little Lies 89% (HBO)What it is: From creator David E. Kelley and based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies is an murder mystery of intertwined upper-class mothers living in Monterey, California. Why you should watch it: Big Little Lies is one of the buzziest ensemble dramas on TV today, and that’s thanks in large part to its stacked cast of A-list stars and producers: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz — and, in an twist that just about broke the internet, Meryl Streep is co-starring in the new episodes as a woman whose arrival in the rich seaside town of Monterrey causes trouble for the main women. Season 2 returns by popular demand on HBO June 9.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, HBO Now, VuduCommitment: Approx. 7 hours (for the first season)Claws 90% (TNT)What it is: Niecy Nash stars as Desna Simms, the takes-no-prisoners owner of  a nail salon in the swampy town of Manatee County, Florida. She’s flanked by a scene-stealing assortment of coworkers and patrons. The drama flares, however, when she and her employees turn to organized crime and start laundering money. Why you should watch it: Full of camp, high-stakes crime drama, and firecracker scripts with performances to match, Claws is some of the most fun you’ll have with a TV series this summer. Plus we’ll take any excuse to see two-time Emmy nominee Nash execute her perfect blend of humor, brawn, and heart as the leading lady. Season 3 premieres June 9.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first two seasons)Pose 98% (FX)What it is: From creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals, Pose depicts New York City’s ballroom and voguing scene of the 1980s with sickening pageantry, tea-spilling drama, and high fashions for the gods. Why you should watch it: Pose made waves upon its premiere by being the largest ever ensemble cast of transgender actors playing trans characters on TV. But aside from its progressive stamp of approval for onscreen representation, it’s also just damn good TV, expertly acted, written, and directed, and unafraid to tackle LGBTQ+ issues that we’ve never seen explored in such a way before. Season 2 premieres on FX June 11.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6 hours (for the first season)Queen Sugar 98% (OWN)What it is: After the unexpected death of their father, estranged siblings Ralph-Angel (a conman fresh out of prison), Nova Bordelon (a New Orleans–based journalist and activist), and Charley Bordelon (an upper-class Los Angeles mother to a teenage son) move to rural Louisiana to claim their inheritance: hundreds of acres of sugarcane farmland. Why you should watch it: Queen Sugar is the result of women both behind and in front of the camera joining their powers: executive producer Oprah Winfrey; executive producer, director, and writer Ava DuVernay; stars Rutina Wesley and Dawn-Lyen Gardner; and other female directors for each episode of its three seasons. And their work isn’t the only stunning aspect of the series — sprawling locations under the Louisiana sun and timely discussions of racial prejudice, mass incarceration, and more make it a thought-provoking family drama. Season 4 premieres on OWN June 12.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 32.5 hours (for the first three seasons)Younger 98% (TV Land)What it is: Sex and the City helmer Darren Star strikes gold again for city-dwelling women of a certain age with Younger, starring theater vet and now small-screen charmer Sutton Foster as a single mother who lies about her age to pursue her dreams in publishing. Why you should watch it: Foster is absolutely pitch-perfect in this fun, sexy, metropolitan comedy, and she’s matched by a bevy of scene-stealing co-stars: Miriam Shor, Hilary Duff, Nico Tortorella, and Debi Mazar, who are all stellar. Season 6 premieres on TV Land June 12.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: About 25 hours (for the first five seasons)Marvel - Jessica Jones 82% (Netflix)What it is: Private detective/hard-drinking superhero Jessica Jones overcomes abuse and reluctantly helps save the residents of New York City in the final season of Netflix s Marvel propjects. Why you should watch it: Krysten Ritter is sublime as the jeans-and-leather jacket-wearing titular superhero, and her nuanced performance is vital to the portrayal of abuse on screen. Plus, the supporting cast — led by Rachael Taylor and Carrie-Ann Moss, plus David Tennant as the insidious first-season villain Kilgrave — is second to none.  Season 3 premieres on Netflix June 14.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 17.5 hours (for the first two seasons)The Detour 90% (TBS)What it is: The Detour follows the Parker family as they embark on a roadtrip from their Syracuse, New York home to Florida for a family vacation. Why you should watch it: As its title would indicate, not everything goes to plan in this well-meaning family road trip, and missteps and mishaps abound. Created by husband-wife duo Samantha Bee and Jason Jones (who stars as the central father with Natalie Zea, Ashley Gerasimovich, and Liam Carroll), the scripts are funny and heartfelt while still leaving room for some unexpected run-ins with the law and other twists. Season 4 premieres on TBS June 18.Where to watch: Amazon, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 11 hours (for the first three seasons)Dark 95% (Netflix)What it is: This foreign-language streaming series from creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friesehildren combines elements of time travel sci-fi, horror, and family drama to tell the story of the fictional German town of Winden; its children are inexplicably disappearing, leaving residents in varied states of emotional disarray. Why you should watch it: Netflix’s first German-language original series is a doozy: spine-tinglingly eerie, fantastical, and at times downright terrifying, it’s a must-watch for any fans of the genre. Season 2 premieres on Netflix June 21.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 8.5 hours (for the first season)Legion 91% (FX)What it is: While Legion is among the most original—and undefinable—series on TV today, in the simplest of terms, it’s the story of psych-ward patient David Haller (Dan Stevens) and his sidekick-turned-nemesis Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) as David more fully becomes what he’s always known himself to be: a mutant. Why you should watch it: To anyone who says they’re tiring of the superhero genre overtaking film and TV, we say, “Have you seen Legion?” Noah Hawley’s absolutely singular X-Men–based vision is a mind-bending and engrossing head-scratcher that’s well worth committing to. And committing is exactly what Stevens and Plaza do with their no-holds-barred, fearless performances. Season 3, its final season, premieres on FX June 24.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first two seasons)Like this?
