沙巴体育365平台采用百度引擎4(Baidu 8)The wait is almost over! Vin Diesel and his family — now including John Cena — are back for F9, the latest installment of the Fast Furious franchise, and it’s finally arriving in theaters on June 25. More than a month ahead of that release, though, a number of critics have had the chance to see the sequel and were permitted to share their thoughts on social media. As you’re no doubt expecting, this movie is reportedly filled with ridiculous action to the point that it’s potentially too silly in its physics-defying spectacle. Does it have any script problems? Who cares, right? Especially when Han (Sung Kang) is back and properly honored. Regardless, it’s still fun seeing the positive buzz on this highly anticipated blockbuster. Here’s what critics are saying about F9:How does F9 compare to the rest of the franchise?F9 is outrageous and one of the biggest, baddest additions to the Fast family franchise.  Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsF9 was AMAZING! Justin Lin s return is a high ranking entry.  Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendIt s a TON OF FUN!! This is ultimate Fast Furious.  Molly Freeman, Screen RantF9 is grandiose fun. Bombastic, brazen, bold.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionF9 is by far the biggest and most ridiculous Fast Furious yet. [But it’s] miles from the precision of Fast Five or the fun of Tokyo Drift.  David Ehrlich, IndieWireThis is one of the weakest entries in the franchise, probably near the bottom. If they continue this, I honestly hope they are spin-offs like Hobbs and Shaw, which I enjoyed much more.  Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s the worst FF movie to date.  John Campea, The John Campea Show(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)How is the cast?Vin Diesel and John Cena are terrific. Tyrese is the stealth MVP. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionTyrese steals the whole god damn show. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsAlso HAN IS STILL GREAT!!! Molly Freeman, Screen RantHow is the action? The action continues to be pure bonkers adrenaline…absolute blockbuster bliss. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSupercharged stunts and ambitious action set pieces mix with combustible soap opera dramatics. It’s a cacophony [of] car-crunching mayhem. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAnything is possible, there are surprises at every turn, the stunts are at their best. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsThe action feels fresh and innovative, if not necessarily bigger. Molly Freeman, Screen Rant(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Does the plot match the spectacle? The story actually gets some exciting depths. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendIt weaves in John Cena s Jakob in a smart way that builds on the theme of family, giving it some real heart. Molly Freeman, Screen RantIt takes a while to rev up but won me over by the end. David Ehrlich, IndieWireIt’s overly long, convoluted. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentDoes it get too ridiculous? The Fast movies 4-8 work well because they embrace the ridiculousness. But at some point it s way too much. The couple of moments of laughs and charm are totally overwhelmed by the eye rolling nonsense. John Campea, The John Campea ShowF9 gets busy (too busy)… in its outer-space sequence, flirts with jumping the shark. Owen Gleiberman, VarietySo ridiculously over the top that it borders on being insulting rather than fun and entertaining. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentEverything is over-the-top, and I loved every second of it. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsI found myself giggling at the sheer audacity of a few of the big set pieces and some other stuff. It’ll absolutely make you forget your troubles for a few hours. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionHearing other people laugh around me when some ridiculously over the top action happened was the best part. Thank you science. Steve Weintraub, Collider(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)So it s worth seeing in a theater? If you feel safe going I definitely definitely definitely suggest seeing it on the big screen cause wow wow wow. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsMAN I MISSED GOING TO THE MOVIES. and Fast Furious 9 was definitely a fun one to be my first movie back in theaters!! Molly Freeman, Screen RantDo we need to watch all the previous movies ahead of time?I m glad I watched all eight main Fast Furious movies before seeing F9 — the movie rewards longtime fans in some cool ways. But I m gonna give myself a headache trying to make the franchise timeline make sense! You just gotta roll with it! Molly Freeman, Screen Rant[F9 delivers] satisfying answers to some important questions. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSo the franchise is still going strong? With Justin Lin at the helm it feels like things are finally moving in the right direction. David Ehrlich, IndieWire[There’s] plenty of gas left in the tank. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThis franchise has officially run out of gas. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentF9 opens in theaters on June 25, 2021.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

(Yes, your ears and eyes were working: that was Julia Roberts naming Green Book as Best Picture and not Roma.) It was also a night for history to be made, with the likes of Spike Lee winning his first Oscar, and Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler becoming the first African Americans to win awards for Costume and Production Design, respectively. Read on for our picks of the night s biggest moments, and check out our full list of the 2019 Oscar winners.Adam Lambert and Queen Open the Show(Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody may be lowest on the Tomatometer among the Best Picture nominees, but the band was top of the night. Joined by Adam Lambert, Queen opened the show performing “We Will Rock You” and then “We Are the Champions,” forcing all actors caught on camera to rock out enthusiastically/awkwardly (Javier Bardem for the win).Fey, Rudolph, Poehler Show they Would Have Made the Perfect HostsSome viewers got their hopes up that perhaps we would get hosts after all when Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler entered the stage following a montage of moments from the year in film. And while they did not stick around to guide us through the night, their introduction to the Best Supporting Actress showed the Academy might be wise to let them next year. Particular highlights: Rudolph’s sultry “Wakanda plans you got later?” to Chadwick Boseman, and her perfect Gaga wail.Regina King Wins Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) 95%If Beale Street Could Talk co-star Regina King was named Best Supporting Actress, and – after an assist getting to the stage from Captain American himself – delivered a heartfelt speech, celebrating her mother, who accompanied her to the awards. “I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone,” said a teary King. She is the first winner in any acting category to win the Oscar without being nominated for a SAG or BAFTA since Marcia Gay Harden in 2000.Brian Tyree Henry and Melissa McCarthy Wear All the CostumesBrian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) introduced the Best Costume Category wearing outfits inspired by all five nominees. We will never forget the image of McCarthy opening the envelope with a rabbit puppet.Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler Make History With Wins for Black Panther (2018) 96%Black Panther costumer Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, beating out favorite Sandy Powell who was nominated twice for Mary Poppins Returns and The Favourite. The 30-year veteran began her acceptance speech by thanking fellow nominee Spike Lee; the BlacKkKlansman director gave Carter her first job on School Daze, and they later collaborated for her Oscar-nominated work on Malcolm X. Next up was the award for Best Production Design, and in back-to-back historic Black Panther wins, Hannah Beachler became the first Black woman to win for Production Design. The production designer behind Beyonce’s Lemonade and all of director Ryan Coogler’s movies gave an emotional speech during which she thanked Coogler for believing in her.Mahershala Ali Wins Second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Green Book (2018) 77%Some pundits thought Can You Ever Forgive Me? co-star Richard E. Grant was set to cause an upset here, but favorite Mahershala Ali took home the prize for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley. The win makes Ali only the second ever Black actor to win two acting Oscars (the other being Denzel Washington). Ali dedicated his award to his grandmother, “who has been in my ear my entire life telling me, if at first I don’t succeed, try, try again.”Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Generate Jackson-Ally Magic with “Shallow”(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)They didn’t even need an intro… The Best Song favorites performed the final song of the night, semi-recreating A Star Is Born’s memorable concert scene: camera lingering behind them, epic build, that wail. “Shallow” – of course – went on to win Best Song.Spike Lee – Finally – Wins His First OscarBOOM-SHAKA-LACKA! Spike Lee won his first competitive Oscar after five nominations. (He was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2016). Accepting the Best Adapted Screenplay award for BlacKkKlansman – along with Kevin Willmott, David Rabinowitz, and Charlie Wachtel – the Brooklyn native stayed on brand: bombastic and honest. During his speech, he drew attention to the date of his historic win, 400 years almost to the day since the first slaves arrived in the United States. In February, Black History Month, the country s most celebrated Black filmmaker was handed the award from Brie Larson and his longtime friend Samuel L. Jackson. It is the third year in a row that a Black writer has won for screenwriting: Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out last year and Barry Jenkins won Best Adapted Screenplay in 2017 for Moonlight.A Best Actress Mega SurpriseThe Oscars proved it still has the capacity to surprise, saving one of the biggest shocks of the night to almost the very end: The Favourite star Olivia Colman upset favorite Glenn Close in the Best Actress category. Less of a shock: Colman gave arguably the best and funniest speech of the night, opening with “It’s genuinely quite stressful” and ending by simply exclaiming, “Lady Gaga!”Alfonso Cuarón Continues Hot Streak for Mexican DirectorsAlfonso Cuarón’s win for Best Director means that Mexican directors have won the category five times since 2014: Alejandro González Iñárritu for Birdman and The Revenant, Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, and Cuarón for Gravity and, now, Roma.Green Book (2018) 77% Beats Out Favorite Roma to Win Best PictureIf the Best Actress win was one of the biggest wins of the night, it’s closest competition was in the Best Picture category, where Green Book won ahead of favorite Roma. Some pundits had a feeling this could happen, particularly given the Oscars’ preferential voting system, but it was inconceivable to others that any film could stand in the way of Cuarón s masterpiece. Netflix will have to wait another year, at least, before it can take the top honor.Thumbnail image courtesy Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhat were your biggest highlights of the night? 4.63.6 8月喜迎The 140 Essential 1970s MoviesWelcome to the days of disco and dirty deeds as we plunge into a new wave of movies: raw and renewed, unfiltered, while laying the groundwork for blockbuster era to come. Welcome to the 140 essential movies of the 70s.The two moods we aimed to capture in this countdown: The wilting of 60s flower power optimism under the harsh light of urban reality and decay; meanwhile the destruction of the musty Hays Code a musty ruleset that dictated what could be depicted on-screen for decades suddenly allowing directors to pursue more personal expressions in film, often violent and sexual. You ll find stories of lone men (Taxi Driver, Dog Day Afternoon) and women (Wanda, Norma Rae) against the system, and paranoid political thrillers (All the President s Men, Three Days of the Condor). There are the horror hallmarks (Alien, Halloween) including international (Suspiria, Deep Red), and box office game changers (Star Wars, Jaws). Low-budget exploitation (The Last House on the Left, Mad Max), and a few things a willing warped mind can get off on (The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Holy Mountain). All movies considered for this list needed to have a Tomatometer (after 5 reviews) and have been made during the decade, even if it didn t get a major release until later, e.g. Hausu or Killer of Sheep. Now, let s strut them mean streets, let s do the time warp again, let s have ourselves a close encounter with 140 essential 70s movies!More Essential Movies By Decade1980s | 1990s | 2000s #140

The Film Has A Vintage Look(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)From the first second, the teaser shows that Joker will look different. The glossier color grading of films like Aquaman and the animated quality of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice have been replaced with an older aesthetic derived from the stripped-down crime dramas the studio produced in the 1970s. While still cleaner than Taxi Driver or Serpico, it is clear Phillips wants to invoke the rundown feel of New York captured in those films for his vision of Gotham City.Of course, those WB-produced films achieved that look by simply going on location and shooting a city in decline, so Joker’s rundown Gotham will look a little artificial. Nonetheless, it still has a sense of place with real exteriors and a mundane-looking Arkham Asylum. While the Dark Knight trilogy tried the stripped-down approach, it never aimed for the 1970s level of grit seen Joker s subways and alleys. It definitely sets the film apart from Joker’s other cinematic appearances.Joaquin Phoenix Transforms Into A Classical Joker(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)Reportedly, Phoenix lost 50 lbs. for the role. And as seen in certain shots of his back, the transformation is startling. A wiry Joker is not a new idea. That rendition of the character is all over the Batman: Arkham video game series and is a constant design choice in the comics with artists like Jim Aparo and Brian Bolland giving him impossible proportions. But in getting into this “fighting weight,” Phoenix’s whole face takes on the angular visage that artists in comics, animation, and games have been giving the character for decades. It is probably why he so instantly looked the part in those early costume tests the studio released.Of course, lanky proportions are not required when bringing the character to the screen as Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, and Heath Ledger proved. And once you add the suit into the mix, the actor’s dedication to a skinny body gets lost under layers of clothing. Nonetheless, Phoenix’s commitment to changing himself into that classic Joker body is commendable. At the same time, we hope he s enjoyed a good meal or two since production wrapped.Arthur Fleck Is Sympathetic(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)As the landmark graphic novel The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Bolland established, the Joker is unknowable — even to himself. Part of what makes him Batman s nemesis is the lack of a simple motivation or even a genuine history. In the 1989 Batman, the character receives an origin as a Gotham City mob enforcer who only turns to theatrics when his boss betrays him and Batman lets him fall into a vat of chemicals. In The Dark Knight, he arrives in town fully formed, but we learn almost nothing about him. This approach was lauded because it skews so close to the comics: the Joker is a force of nature. But now we have Arthur Fleck. In one of the most critical departures from the established comic book canon, Joker sets out to give him a relatable and concrete history. He’s a failed comedian, down on his luck and, as the shot of his notebook reveals, suffering from some sort of mental illness. We also see him being good to his mother, Penny (Frances Conroy), and having a genuine moment with Zazie Beetz’s Sophie. Also, we witness him getting kicked to the curb a lot by Gotham scum of both the blue- and white-collar varieties. The end result is a Joker who is knowable and, ultimately, relatable. He has to be if he is the protagonist of the story. But in doing so, the movie opens up the possibility of the character being viewed as a hero, a thematic choice it must apply carefully and consciously position for its tragic consequences.Thomas Wayne Is A Loudmouth(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)At one point, rumors surfaced indicating that Alec Baldwin would play a version of Thomas Wayne more akin to a certain publicity-hungry 1980s land developer than the caring patron of the city we usually see. Considering Baldwin is known for playing a parody of that land developer, the casting suggested the film might have a broader tone than the one we are seeing in the teaser. And to that end, the preview offers a glimpse of Thomas Wayne. Played by The Dark Knight Rises veteran Brett Cullen, we see Bruce’s father is more than happy to appear on TV and decry the latest string of Gotham City calamities. Of course, his key statement — “What kind of coward would do so something that cold-blooded? Someone who hides behind a mask.” — is an obvious joke about the Batman, but the overall context of his morning talk show appearance is clear. But it is also clear Wayne will be a little more nuanced than the broad caricature some may have expected during Baldwin’s very brief association with the project. In fact, the tone of the film as presented in the teaser is a far cry from anything one might have expected from The Hangover director Phillips. The apparent seriousness on display, ironically, makes it all the more compelling. It Is A Love Letter To The King Of Comedy(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)At the same time, Phillips is not forgetting his comedy roots. In fact, the film seems to derive a lot of its soul from Martin Scorsese’s 1982 film, The King of Comedy. In it, Robert De Niro plays a sad-sack, failed comedian whose obsession with a Johnny Carson-esque late-night talk show host (Jerry Lewis) leads to kidnapping and, surprisingly, the character’s best chance at stardom.De Niro’s one appearance in the teaser in front of a multi-colored curtain — a la Carson’s monologue backdrop in the 1970s and early 1980s — invokes the look and tone of King of Comedy. The parallel is pointed and no doubt one of the film’s early selling points. Getting De Niro to essentially play the Lewis role gives the film a very different association from its comic-book trappings. Also consider the banner for Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times seen in the trailer. That film is a comedy classic with a number of pointed comments about the workaday world crushing the little guy. Sure, Joker is still a comic book movie, but it is pulling ideas and influences from a wide array of sources. The fact most of these sources are ultimately owned by WarnerMedia may even be a joke in itself.Like this? (Photo by Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection.)All Joel Schumacher Movies, Ranked by TomatometerYour typical journeyman director deep in the studio system will make movies across plenty of genres, on-time and under-budget, foster some lasting professional relationships, and never make a name for themselves beyond to the most ardent, specific film buffs. Yes, Joel Schumacher worked across multiple genres without a thematic throughline, with studios and actors quick to praise his behind-the-scenes professionalism, but the director also brought enough verve and dynamic color to his films that Schumacher s name, at his creative peak, did become a kind of brand. A calling card of big Hollywood entertainment with style to separate from the rest. This began in earnest in 1987 with the Brat Pack-adjacent The Lost Boys, the stylish horror/comedy that pulled vampires out of cliff-nested castles and into teen parties and suburbia, a popular concept still seen in the likes of True Blood and Twilight. Having made Kiefer Sutherland a star, Schumacher worked with him again on his next film, Flatliners.Schumacher entered his most commercially viable period in the 90s, starting with 1993 s Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas on a particularly bad Los Angeles day, in a film that has been latched onto as a manifesto of urban rage still discussed and referenced now. Schumacher took the reins for 1995 s Batman Forever after Tim Burton and Michael Keaton left the blockbuster franchise. Some inspired casting (Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, Jim Carrey as The Riddler, and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face), plenty of wild art direction, a brash soundtrack, and just a touch of camp turned the movie into pop-culture phenomenon. A year later, Schumacher released A Time To Kill at a time when anything Grisham, Crichton, and Clancy was being adapted and making a mint at the box office. (Schumacher had previously turned Grisham s The Client into a movie.)Then came the disastrous Batman Robin, which killed the franchise for nearly a decade. Schumacher took full ownership for the movie s failure, claiming that he had steered too far towards what marketing and merchandising wanted out of a Batman joint. A public bomb of this proportion could ve been a career-ender, but his workmanship and a steady line of stars willing to collaborate time and again meant the next Schumacher film was never far off. He worked twice with Colin Farrell, first in 2000 s Tigerland, which introduced the actor to American audiences, and then in 2003 s Phone Booth, which made Farrell a star. Sutherland, back in the saddle, played the villain. Schumacher can be credited with helping launch Gerard Butler s career in full, when he cast him as lead in 2005 s The Phantom of the Opera. In 2007, Schumacher worked again with Carrey for psychological thriller The Number 23. His final film was 2011 s Trespass, reuniting him with 8MM s Nicolas Cage and Batman Forever s Nicole Kidman. We celebrate his life and career with our guide to every Joel Schumacher film, by Tomatometer.

Once he hears Grogu s life is in the balance, Mayfeld agrees to assist. Needing direct access to an Imperial terminal, he suggests setting course for the secret mining operation on Morak.Once on the planet, Hess and Djarin disguise themselves as Shoretroopers to infiltrate a refinery for highly-volatile mineral rhydonium. When attempting to access an Imperial network in the mess hall with the terminal, Mayfeld backs out after noting Valin Hess (Richard Brake) among the officers. The two have history. Desperate to find Grogu, Djarin removes his helmet so the terminal can complete a facial scan. Unfortunately, all of their mucking about attracts the attention of Hess, but the Imperial officer only wants to congratulate them, as they were the only transport team to make it back to base. Things turn sour when Mayfeld darkly reminisces about the Burnin Konn engagement of Operation: Cinder, a mission which led to the deaths of roughly 10,000 troopers. When Hess dismisses the losses, Mayfeld shoots him.The resulting firefight leads to Hess and Djarin s escape, thanks to timely assists by Dune, Shand, and Fett. Djarin recovers his armor and Dune decides to let Mayfeld go after seeing him hit one of the rhydonium transports from the Slave I hatch and blowing up the entire Imperial base.Leaving Mayfeld on Morak, Djarin sends a message to Gideon declaring war.A Change of a Hardened Heart Suggests Imperial Goons Are Not All Created Equally(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Mayfeld s reappearance here is a surprising change from his more villainous debut last season in Chapter 6, The Prisoner — also directed by Famuyiwa. It is, nevertheless, a welcome change as Mayfeld shows a hidden depth under his quips. Concern for the loss of life is not a quality the Empire or the Remnant values, and this growing concern was clearly a key reason Mayfeld walked away from the Imps after Burnin Konn.As it happens, Operation: Cinder was part of Sheev Palaptine s contingency plan to cripple the galaxy — Rebels and Imperials alike — should he ever perish. While on its face, it was meant to bring ecological devastation to world like Naboo and Burnin Konn, the high casualty counts were also part of the design. It is doubtful Hess or Mayfeld knew the real reasons for the operation, though, or the other aspects of Palpatine s plan, the retreat of certain Imperial forces to the Unknown Regions.Nevertheless, their reactions here illustrates a distinct difference in character. Hess is a true believer in the Empire s definition of order, while Mayfeld was probably a conditional Imp at best. As seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story and intimated by Luke Skywalker s desire to leave Tatooine, people joined the Imperial military because they are out of options. Typically, the training crushes a person s spirit and turns them into loyal goons like Hess, but sometimes a moral center survives. It is clearly the point of Famuyiwa s script as Mayfeld proved to be more honorable than the other characters he introduced in Chapter 6: The Prisoner. It also suggests Famuyiwa has a longer-form Star Wars story of his own to tell. His directorial debut in the galaxy, Chapter 2: The Child, was a fabulous self-contained adventure seemingly inspired by the simple question What if Boba Fett fought Jawas? Chapter 6, his debut as a writer (with Christopher Yost), continued with the seemingly one-off stories, while introducing a compelling set of miscreants, Mayfeld included. While it is possible he will stay on Morak to help the indigenous population fend off Imps and pirates — a worthy conclusion to his tale — it is also possible Famuyiwa has found a way to highlight the struggles of more common people caught between the never-ending conflicts in the galaxy. And with Star Wars expanding its television footprint to 19 series(!) in the next few years, we have to wonder if Famuyiwa will apply his craft to, say, Rangers of the New Republic. He is a great a filmmaker, and it s clear he can do great things in the Star Wars format, so we think it is time to set him loose on a series or a feature film. He is more than capable.Although, considering Dune declared Mayfeld dead while letting him go, we also have to wonder if he will have to dodge those Rangers in the upcoming series or befriend them.Questioning The Remnant(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)While we ponder Mayfeld s future in New Republic space, we also have to consider the Remnant s place in all of this.Is Another Operation: Cinder Afoot? While Palpatine s contingency plans were meant to cripple the Remnant and the New Republic in short order, both factions endured. Is the chaos Hess said would soon happen part of another contingency? The forces that will become the First Order and the Final Order are already ensconced in the Unknown Regions by this point, so sacrificing more Imps to hobble the New Republic feels on-point for the Sith Lord. Provided he s still issuing commands in his bizarre afterlife, of course. What Is The Remnant s Command Structure? Expanding on a question we ve asked before, it is still unclear if these Imperial Remnant enclaves are working in concert or independently of one another. In the Star Wars: Battlefield II campaign, directives regarding Operation: Cinder and other aspects of Palpatine s contingency are delivered to high ranking Imps via prerecorded holo-messages from the Emperor himself. The secrecy involved suggests Palpatine may have encouraged Remnant forces to splinter as part of the plan to cripple anyone not in the Unknown Regions. At the same time, it is possible Gideon united the factions into one organized Remnant. But even if that is the case, it still leaves us to wonder if Gideon is working at Palpatine s behest or for his own ambitions. How Strong Is the ISB? The Imperial Security Bureau definitely gives our heroes pause, but its strength only seems to extend to Remnant controlled zones or specific operations directed by Gideon, himself a former ISB operative. Is the ISB a credible threat? If so, why did the ISB lose track of Djarin and Grogu following the events on Nevarro last season? Why Did the Terminal Recognize Djarin s Face? From Mayfeld s explanation of the terminal system, we expected the facial scan to be another layer of the verification process. If that is true, why did it recognize Djarin s face? The simplest explanation, of course, is that the scan is just a simple logging system instead of a security function. Which may mean Gideon will use the record of the Mandalorian s face against him. Will Djarin Really Carry On Under the Helmet? Although all the Imps who saw his face are dead and Mayfeld choose to ignore what he saw, we can t help but wonder how Djarin can continue to wear the armor after being seen. On the one hand, he s seen plenty of Mandos this season who do not live by the Way of the Mandalore. On the other, he s still a religious zealot who has yet to reconcile the Way with the evidence of his own eyes. Perhaps, like Mayfeld said, Djarin will do what he must to get Grogu back and, after retrieving him, will leave the armor with Boba Fett; in fact, that feels like the right note to end the season on. We ll know soon enough, though, as next week is the season finale. The Mandalorian streams on Disney+.On an Apple device? Although superhero shows make up the bulk of Comics on TV options, the format can get a little tiresome at times. Whether it be repeated plot points or uninspired antagonists – we’re looking at you, Ricardo Diaz – the grind of a superhero show can lead to a certain amount of fatigue. This goes double for a casual viewer less interested in the crossover potential of the Arrowverse or the late, lamented Marvel universe on Netflix. But the first half of 2019 has seen a number of startling and well-produced superhero shows redefine and revitalize what the genre can be. Instead of season-long big bads strung across 22-episodes, the heroes face existential crisis in shorter seasons. And in at least one case, Amazon’s adaptation of The Boys, the supers are anything but heroes. In fact, the series, and its unique take on super-powered people, has revitalized the superhero show as a whole in just 8 episodes thanks to its adventurous storytelling. So let’s take a look at some of the ways it uses capes, heat vision, PTSD, and old-fashion love stories to give the superhero genre a fresh perspective.Spoiler Alert: The following discusses plot points from the entire first season of Amazon series The Boys. Stop now if you haven t watched every episode. It Adapts Finite Source MaterialOne of the key things setting The Boys – and some of the other 2019 debuts, in fact – apart from an Arrowverse or a Marvel show is its source material, the 72-issues series (and some special releases) by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The finite nature of the original comic book makes it more like a novel than the never-ending battle in the pages of The Flash or X-Men. This means the show has a sense of direction even the Marvel series on Netflix could not necessarily claim beyond the first season of Jessica Jones and, to a certain extent, the third season of Daredevil. And it is the sort of thing unheard of in the shows of the Distinguished Competition.Knowing the shape of the full story ahead of time means the chance to properly plot it. In the case of The Boys, this is best illustrated in the way Hughie (Jack Quaid) comes to know the other members of Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) team, how they all meet the Female (Karen Fukuhara), and how most them come to rely on a super in critical moment. It is different from the books, but it delivers characters precisely when they are need — particularly Frenchie (Tomer Capon). Yes, not every plot point is expertly timed across the first season, but for the most part, The Boys asks questions and answers them with a rare precision. It Knows When To Walk Away From That AdaptationModern finite comics share more in common with novels than the ongoing travails of Superman and Spider-Man. It is a definite benefit to comic book storytelling overall, but it means fans of titles like The Boys will expect certain moments to appear in the series almost verbatim. When Rotten Tomatoes talked to executive producer Eric Kripke about key scenes, he said balancing those expectations with the understanding that TV is a different format is key to producing a good adaption.“Luckily, I m a huge fan of the material, so the scenes that are important to the fans, and that the fans love, I love too,” he explained. At the same time, it was important to break down the comic and determine “what scenes fit in the particular version of the story we re telling and fit the tone and fit the style.” Kripke expected at the time that “there will inevitably be fans that are unhappy with some things that I didn t include. But, he continued, “it s my responsibility to tell the best story that I know how to tell, and I try to use as many of the pieces of the book as I can, but some of them just don t fit in our version of the story.”Sometimes, elements of a story change for more practical reason, like Butcher’s dog Terror. Glimpsed in one or two flashbacks on the television series, Terror was almost an extra appendage of Billy’s in the comic. But when facing the realities of having a dog on set among all the other technical challenges of a superhero show, Kripke made a tough decision. “It literally would have been impossible to finish the show on our schedule with our ambition if, on top of everything else we were doing, we had a dog,” he explained.Of course, at Comic-Con, Kripke suggested there may be a chance for Terror to be part of Billy’s present-day life in season 2.Beyond purely practical concerns regarding Terror, readers of The Boys will note a change in tone. The darkness and despair beautifully rendered by Robertson in the pages of the comic book have been toned down for a brighter world. It also introduces Starlight (Erin Moriarty) in a position of strength, re-casting her as the story s heart from the get-go. That greater focus on the light in the initial episodes counterpoints the darkness in the hearts of characters like Homelander (Antony Starr) and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), while making Hughie’s entry into Butcher’s world more inviting. At least, inviting to viewers ready to look at the violence Hughie witnesses with a more satirical slant. It Quickly Complicates the CharactersThanks to that strong sense of direction, characters accrue a level of complication at A-Train’s pace. Consider how corrupt he seems at the onset or when he kills his secret girlfriend. But the sense he is a one-note character is soon shattered when a reality show producer asks him to omit the painful gang-related truth in his origin story. And as his body continues to break down from the effects of Compound V, we see he is as much of a victim of Vought’s machinations as Annie (Moriarity) or Hughie. Sure, a viewer might walk away from the season still hating A-Train’s guts, but at least it comes from a richer understanding of his situation. He is getting ground inside the machine. As the season progresses, we see the caricatures of episode 1 give way to more complex characters with each passing scene. Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) goes on an odyssey to realize her lost optimism. She may not resemble the hero Annie is turning into, but even those few words of encouragement she offers at the end of the season indicate a positive change. Or, at least the sort of positive change we can hope to see from these characters. But that also means Maeve could easily fall back into her old ways when we see her again next year.Meanwhile, Butcher defies traditional classifications of hero and anti-hero. He’s doing this all in memory of his wife, but at some point, one gets the impression he just needed the excuse in order to start killing. He may not grin the way Homelander does while offing an enemy, but a similar satisfaction is present. And considering the season ends with the two of them at the same place, we can expect some discussion of their commonalities during an uncomfortable backyard barbecue.
