(Photo by Warner Bros/courtesy Everett Collection)All DC Comics Movies RankedSuperman. Batman. Wonder Woman. These are some of the staple titans of DC Comics the world has come to adore over the past 80 years, especially as they made the leap from page panel to silver screen and TV in the 50s and 60s. (And well before those upstart punks Marvel Comics to boot!) You ll find them all in in our guide to every DC Comics movie ranked by Tomatometer, along with other significant greats like Swamp Thing, Green Lantern, and Shazam. But the world of comic book publishing is nothing if not vast, a constellation of multiverses, retcons, annuals, and imprints. Moving beyond the strictly superhero element of DC Comics, this guide will also feature the adapated works from DC imprints Vertigo (V for Vendetta, The Losers), Paradox Press (Road to Perdition, A History of Violence), and WildStorm (Red, Red 2).We ve limited the movies to theatrical releases only, which does keep out the home animated fare that s been giving DC adaptations a good name whenever the DCEU stumbled. But to that end, you will find The Killing Joke and Return of the Caped Crusaders here, both of which got a one-day theatrical release.Great leaping catfish! This introduction is now over! Hurry, to Rotten Tomatoes and the list of every DC movie ranked by Tomatometer!

In another time the weekend would have been billed as the battle between the Joker and the Gemini Man. This is not that time. While nobody seriously gave the new Will Smith film a chance to dethrone the comic-book spinoff film, many assumed it could at least beat The Addams Family. It is a story about three stories at the box office this week and none of them involve Jexi. But the story of Joker is shaping up to be a bigger one than anyone truly imagined.King of the Crop: Joker Keeps on Smiling with Record-Breaking Second Weekend(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Warner Bros.’ Joker showed no real signs of a slow-down this week and set a new record on top of it. Initial estimates on Friday suggested a weekend just under million. As of Sunday morning the projections had jumped to million, which handily bests the .1 million that Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity made to have now the best first and second weekends ever for a film opening in October. With 2.73 million total domestically through 10 days it is also well ahead of Venom’s 2.1 million and Gravity’s 2.3 million. That second number is significant since Cuaron’s film is the highest-grossing October film of all time and Joker now finds itself just million behind. Todd Phillips’ film also joins an elite group of movies opening to million or higher and dropping less than 44% in their second week: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2002’s Spider-Man, Shrek 2, 2016’s The Jungle Book, Wonder Woman, Inside Out, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Passion of the Christ, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.Gravity was a marvel of consistency, never dropping more than 37% through its first seven weeks. Joker fell only 42.8% this weekend and could even challenge Gravity’s record-setting million third weekend. On the all-time 10-day chart, Joker is more than  million ahead of Phillips’ own The Hangover Part II (7.87 million), a film which fell 63.5% in weekend two down to .38 million and ultimately finished with 4.46 million. Gravity’s final domestic haul was 4 million, but now Joker is in a group of 63 other films with 0 million or more after 10 days (Joker is 62nd), and only five of those films failed to reach 0 million. The lowest-grossing film among them was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, with 1.28 million – which would be good enough to secure October’s highest-grossing film ever. Worldwide Joker is up to 1 million.Fresh Surprise: Addams Family Spooks Up A Strong OpeningUnited Artists Releasing, which has become the roof over the heads of Annapurna, Orion and MGM, had a good weekend, and their animated version of The Addams Family is going to be their highest-grossing film to date. Addams took home a .3 million opening weekend, looking to surpass UA’s The Hustle (.41 million total) in a few days and Annapurna’s Vice (.83 million) before its 10th day. This may be less than Adam Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania films, which began between million and million each, but is now the third-best October start for an animated film behind Shark Tale (.6 million) and Puss in Boots (.07 million). They went on to gross 0 million and 9 million, respectively. Only nine films have ever opened in October to less than million and hit 0 million (Meet the Parents, The Departed, Captain Phillips, Paranormal Activity, Argo, The Ring, Look Who’s Talking, Pulp Fiction, and American Beauty.)Rotten Returns: Gemini Man Continues Troubling October Trend

Gretel & Hansel (2020) 63% We haven t even spent an entire month in 2020 yet, but we re already getting our fourth big horror release of the year in this week s Gretel Hansel. Like last week s The Turning, this one is also rooted in classic literature, as it offers a new take on the well-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Sophia Lillis plays 16-year-old Gretel, who, along with her brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey), has been sent into the woods in search of a convent to take them in, since their destitute mother can no longer provide for them. Of course, as anyone familiar with the source material might predict, the pair happen upon a mysterious cabin en route and, tempted by the feast they spy inside, decide to pull up a couple of chairs and hang out with the creepy woman who lives there and who might be a witch looking to fatten them up and eat them later. Director Oz Perkins is no stranger to horror his previous films include I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and The Blackcoat s Daughter   and he does his best to craft an atmosphere-driven arthouse chiller, but most critics say Gretel Hansel is far too leisurely paced and devoid of real terror that it loses steam quickly and never quite recovers. There are bright spots here: Sophia Lillis s acting chops are on full display, Alice Krige is suitably unsettling as Holda the witch, and pretty much everyone even those who generally didn t like the film has nothing but great things to say about the film s lush imagery and stunning cinematography. Ultimately, though, fans of traditional horror fare may find the film s deliberate pacing and third-act liberties with the source material a bit too much to swallow.
Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the super-dark superhero books The Boys was one of the biggest streaming hits of 2019. Bloody, cynical, action-packed, and funny AF, the Certified Fresh show – co-created by Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg – stood out from the spandex-clad pack with its inventive take on a corporatized superhero culture, and the creation of some truly memorable characters.Heading into season 2, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with Kripke and the cast to dive deep into the show’s lead supes and supe-chasers, breaking down their origins, strengths and weaknesses, where we left them at the end of season 1, and what we can expect from them in new episodes, landing on Amazon Prime Video on September 4. Want to know how Homelander’s going to cope without his mommy figure? What Giancarlo Esposito plans to bring to his mysterious Vought leader, Stan Edgar? Why the show gender-flipped the book’s version of dangerous newcomer Stormfront? And how it feels to have the “dumbest f—king power” of the group? Kripke and cast members Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Aya Cash, Jessie T. Usher, Chase Crawford, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Capon, Laz Alonso, and Giancarlo Esposito have the answers. The Boys season 2’s first three episodes will premiere on Prime Video on Friday, September 4 with new episodes available each subsequent Friday through October 9.

12. Will Gardner (Josh Charles), The Good Wife 93%(Photo by CBS)When it came time for Charles to depart the series on which he d starred for five seasons, his character, Will, didn’t just move to another city. He was shot to death by his own client in the courtroom in a legitimately shocking episode made all the more impactful by the fact that news of Charles imminent exit did not leak beforehand.11. Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan), Lost 85%(Photo by ABC)It’s hard to single out one death from Lost since the show was so good at making us attached to every character. In the end, it had to be Charlie sacrificing himself to warn Desmond it was NOT PENNY’S BOAT radioing the Oceanic survivors.10. Wallace (Michael B. Jordan), The Wire 94%(Photo by HBO)Jordan was only 15 when he played a teenage drug dealer on HBO’s landmark series The Wire, making the moment when druglord Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) orders his murder all the more tragic.9. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Game of Thrones 89%(Photo by HBO)The Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains went power mad in the final moments of the series as she ascended to became ruler of Westeros. Ultimately, however, she wasn t even able to sit on the Iron Throne she d dreamed about as a kid; she was betrayed by her lover-nephew, Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen (Kit Harington), who professed his loyalty, then kissed her while stabbing her in the heart mere feet from her father s throne.8. Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), Downton Abbey on Masterpiece 86%(Photo by ITV)Crawley estate heir Matthew was so happy to be a new father that he took his eyes off the road to appreciate nature, causing the fatal accident that shocked viewers. Fans later found out that Stevens wanted off the show to explore other opportunities.7. Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies), Prison Break 60%(Photo by Fox)Callies could have made our list as Lori Grimes in The Walking Dead for her death during pregnancy, but on Prison Break her head was in a box! Fans demanded her return, so she came back and even showed up in the Fox reboot for a fifth season. At the time during season 3, her demise sure felt permanent.6. Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland), Buffy the Vampire Slayer 83%(Photo by The WB)Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) herself came back to life twice, but her mother Joyce did not have magic to resurrect her. For all the supernatural demons and monsters on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Buffy spent one very real hour dealing with a loved one’s death.5. Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Grey's Anatomy 84%(Photo by ABC)Denny s death was a real gut punch, because throughout the entire second season of the long-running medical drama, it looked like Izzie (Katherine Heigl) had done everything to save her patient-boyfriend, including violating protocol to get him a heart transplant. The transplant itself took, but Denny still died of a blood clot and stroke. The silver lining is this role made Morgan a star.4. Catelyn, Robb, and pregnant Talisa Stark + direwolf Grey Wind (Michelle Fairley, Richard Madden, Oona Chaplin), Game of Thrones 89%While earlier deaths in the HBO hit fantasy series tipped fans off that anyone could go at any time, the episode nicknamed The Red Wedding (season 3, episode 9 The Rains of Castamere ) took Game of Thrones death pools to another level. Half of the surviving Stark family died in the massacre carried out by Lord Walder Frey and his murderous brood: family matriarch Catelyn, King in the North Robb, his wife Talisa, and their unborn child. And while Roose Bolton was thrusting a dagger into Robb, his men outside killed Robb s direwolf, Grey Wind, further stunning an audience that was perhaps hoping the animal might avenge its faithful human companion.3. Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), The Walking Dead 80%On another show where anyone could go at any time, The Walking Dead really psyched people out over the death of main character Glenn. First they made everyone think he died in a walker horde, but then he was somehow safe under a dumpster. Later, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) beat him beyond recognition as, with his last words, he called out to wife Maggie (Lauren Cohan).2. Ned Stark (Sean Bean), Game of Thrones 89%By the end, almost no Game of Thrones death was shocking, but this was the first — and it was the one that told viewers that if the star of the show could die, anyone could. It happened just when things were looking up for Bean, after famously dying in Goldeneye and Lord of the Rings too. For a while, the meme #DontKillSeanBean became a thing.1. Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia), This Is Us 93%After Jack escaped the Pearson family s burning house — saving everyone and the dog — fans all breathed a collective sigh of relief. But he wasn t safe yet. Viewers were gobsmacked when This Is Us delivered the cruelest twist, killing Jack with a massive heart attack related to smoke inhalation. Because of the NBC series unique format, however, this is one character that fans get to spend time with even after he s dead.

Like Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut before it, Zack Snyder s Justice League reflects (for the most part) the original intentions for the film as it was devised during its production in 2016. In the years since, both the DC Films initiative and Warner Bros. Pictures have undergone tremendous shifts in priorities, leadership, and even corporate owners – AT T s desires for a superhero universe do not exactly align with the ones director Zack Snyder and former DC Films bosses Geoff Johns and Jon Berg intended to build. As a consequence, the four-hour epic Snyder released on HBO Max this week is filled with ghosts of that abandoned cinematic universe.Recommended: Zack Snyder Talks Cyborg, Joker and Batman, and FandomRecommended: Zack Snyder s Justice League First Reviews Are In Recommended: Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson Breaks Down the Justice League LooksJoin us now as we take a look at those ghosts, where they were meant to lead, and what s become of those possible stories in the current WarnerMedia DC Films paradigm. It Established Darkseid As The Villain Of the Justice League Sequels(Photo by HBO Max)As seen in Zack Snyder s Justice League, Darkseid – the undisputed ruler of Apokalips – is the real menace at the core of Snyder s plans. Part 2 would have seen the League teaming with the Green Lantern Corps to make a preemptive strike against the Alpha Predator. Their attempt would have ended in defeat with the third film taking place in a world where Lois is dead, Superman is in Darkseid s thrall, and the Batman plots a time travel quest to prevent the Great Darkness from sweeping the Earth. The finale would have seen all the heroes and military might of the planet uniting against Darkseid.Currently, there are no plans for another Justice League. Snyder s interest in returning to superhero films seems to rise and fall with each interview he gives. Darkseid, meanwhile, is slated to be the primary antagonist of Ava DuVernay s New Gods film, which will likely re-imagine the Mother Boxes, the Anti-Life Equation, and all the other New God elements utilized in the Snyder Cut.It Positioned Deathstroke As the Dark Knight s Foe in The Batman (Photo by HBO Max)Where the theatrical version of Justice League saw Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) and Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello) plotting a league of their own, Snyder s version featured a very different twist on the scene. To make Deathstroke s visit worth his time, Lex gave him the civilian identity of the Batman (Ben Affleck). The tease undoubtedly would have led to a confrontation between Batman and Deathstroke in The Batman. At the time the scene was filmed, Affleck was planning to direct, co-write, and star in that project. Early on, word broke indicating Deathstroke would be his main adversary. In light of the Snyder Cut scene, it is clear the plot would have seen Slade Wilson (Deathstroke s real name) systematically destroying Bruce Wayne. That s a really great idea for a film and we re sad the changes in studio priorities and Affleck s very valid need to walk away prevented it from happening. After Affleck departed from the director s chair, Matt Reeves took over The Batman and re-conceived it as a year-two tale with Robert Pattinson playing a younger version of the character. It is due for release on March 4, 2022.Manganiello, meanwhile, tried to keep the Deathstroke dream alive. The plan would ve included an appearance in a Suicide Squad sequel and a solo film. At one point, The Raid: Redemption s Gareth Evans was in discussions about the film, but it evaporated some time ago. Then, the original plans for the Suicide Squad sequel, to be directed by The Accountant s Gavin O Connor, changed into James Gunn s The Suicide Squad. In the fullness of time, Deathstroke will get a meaty role in a DC film someday. It just won t look like anything Snyder planted in his Justice League. It Built Cyborg Up For A Solo Adventure(Photo by HBO Max)Key to Snyder s vision was setting up Cyborg s (Ray Fisher) solo adventure. So much so, he went to great pains to embed the character s origin into Justice League so the first Cyborg film could tell a completely new story. That film was intended for release in 2020, but no creative team ever emerged to shepherd it through development. For years, the only person attached to the project was Fisher himself. Then, last summer, the actor began a campaign to reveal abuses allegedly perpetrated by Joss Whedon, who directed the Justice League reshoots in the summer of 2017. Although it is clear something occurred during that photography, stepping forward ultimately cost Fisher a role in the upcoming feature film version of The Flash and any chance of starring in his own film.Although, considering the film was announced in 2014 and never saw much development beyond that, it is unclear how committed the studio s then-management really was to making Cyborg happen. It Teased An Unhappy Ending For Joker Harley(Photo by Zack Snyder / Vanity Fair)At one time, Suicide Squad was going to spin off Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Joker (Jared Leto) into their own interconnected film series. The rough plan included a Gotham City Sirens – which would eventually become Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipaton of One Harley Quinn) – as well as a solo Joker film, and a Joker Harley project. While Leto s appearance in Zack Snyder s Justice League is newly shot material, it is unclear if Affleck s contribution to the scene was from 2016 or 2020. If the former, then Snyder always intended Batman s lines about Harley to be part of the second Knightmare. Would it have led to her film series ending in tragedy? It would ve been bold, but so little about those projects is known that it might ve been a whole lot of maybe with Harley s death contained only within the Knightmare world of Justice League. In the end, Birds of Prey emerged with Robbie returning as Harley for The Suicide Squad this August. Leto s interest in continuing on as the Joker changes with the wind.It Presented A Green Lantern Allied With The League(Photo by © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)The final scene of Snyder s League features the Martian Manhunter (Henry Lennix) offering his aid to Batman s team. But in a recent interview, the director revealed that scene was rebuilt from a similar one meant to introduce a different superhero. Considering a Green Lantern Corps film was on the development board at the time Justice League was shot – and Snyder s plan to include members of the Corps in Justice League 2 – it s a safe bet a Green Lantern was originally in J onn J ozz s place.Adding to that notion: Snyder also said Ryan Reynolds was game to reprise his Hal Jordan role from the much maligned Green Lantern.Details about the Green Lantern Corps film are vague. No one knows if it would have incorporated ideas from Green Lantern or started over with one of the other many members of that group in the lead position. It is still apparently in development, but with HBO Max working on a Green Lantern series with some of the same people involved in both Lantern film projects, it seems unlikely we ll see a big-screen return anytime soon.Perhaps this motivated Snyder to change the scene to the Martian Manhunter, whose absence from the project up until now was always strange. J onn has been a part of nearly every iteration of the League since its debuted in 1959. Also, since it is a new element, it is always possible we will see Lennix as the character again someday. It Laid the Ground For A Modern-Day Wonder Woman 2 (Maybe)(Photo by HBO Max)This one might be more speculation than anything else, but with all of Diana s (Gal Gadot) references to shutting herself off from everyone for 100 years, we think it s safe to assume Wonder Woman 2 was originally envisioned as a post-Justice League movie. How this fit into Snyder s grand vision of the Great Darkness is harder to determine, but as both he and producing partner Deborah Snyder are executive producers on the Wonder Woman films, we imagine they would have made it work somehow. One guess: the Amazons would have left their island to confront Darkseid in Justice League 3, so maybe Hippolyta s (Connie Nielsen) command for Diana to return to her would ve been an element of that film.It Pointed To Decidedly Different Versions Of Aquaman and The Flash(Photo by HBO Max)Perhaps the most intriguing element of Zack Snyder s Justice League – at least from the standpoint of the projects it teases – is the way it establishes different version of the Aquaman film we eventually received and The Flash film we ll ultimately get.The key difference in visions for Aquaman stems from Arthur s (Jason Momoa) scene with Vulko (Willem Defoe). Besides the obvious design differences in Defoe s character, his attempt to coax Arthur into taking up his mother s trident suggests a different tone and objective for that eventual film. This Vulko seems more committed to getting Arthur on the throne of Atlantis than his short-haired counterpart in James Wan s picture. Additionally, Arthur s problem with his mother is a different type of abandonment issue, indicating their reunion was meant to be more of a confrontation than it ultimately turned out to be. Add to that Mera s (Amber Heard) British accent and her statement that both her parents are dead, and you get hints at a film more in line with the darker parts of The Lord of the Rings than the high adventure tale Wan ultimately delivered.(Photo by HBO Max)Also, we fully believe Lex was meant to sail up in his yacht and rescue Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) during Aquaman s stinger scene. No matter what Aquaman was supposed to be from the standpoint of Zack Snyder s Justice League, the eventual film was a success with a sequel due on December 16, 2022.The Flash, meanwhile, is the most mysterious. From the added scenes, we get that Barry s (Ezra Miller) involvement with Iris (Kiersey Clemons) would be a key plot point, as would his continuing efforts to be less of a shut-in and get his dad out of prison. But those hints speak to a film director Rick Famuyiwa left in late 2016 over the same sort of creative differences which led Seth Grahame-Smith and Game Night directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to depart as well. Currently, It director Andy Muschietti is scheduled to helm the film for a November 4, 2022 release. Curiously, the film will see Barry using his speed abilities to visit other realities in the DC Multiverse and will seemingly establish the many worlds to explain away films like Joker, The Batman, and even Zack Snyder s Justice League itself.Zack Snyder s Justice League is now available on HBO Max.

Though Unhinged and The New Mutants ultimately beat it into theaters, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has been held up for months as the film that was going to help bring moviegoers back to the big screen. The numbers are certainly on the rise with the tentpole flick finally released, but do they indicate a genuine resurgence in theater-going? Let s dig in.King of the Crop: Tenet Brings Some Moviegoers Back, But How Far Can it Go?(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon / © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)From the weekend of March 20 up until the weekend of August 14, no film was able to crack the million mark to top the box office. Up until some releases from August 14 on, the big winners of the summer were horror releases from IFC Midnight: The Wretched (.81 million total), The Rental (.56 million), and Relic (.04 million); the studio had only had seven films gross over a million dollars between 2017 and 2019. Beyond that, retro releases like Jurassic Park (,386,600), The Empire Strikes Back (,015,000), The Goonies (5,000), Jaws (8,300), and Ghostbusters (5,000) were the big winners. On August 14, Paramount released their once-planned May release of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, but only in Canada where it has grossed over .4 million to date. A week later Solstice Studios laid claim to the first wide release since March 13 when it unleashed Unhinged into theaters, earning million in 1,823 theaters for a ,194 per-theater-average. The week after, it was finally time for The New Mutants, which grossed .03 million in 2,412 theaters for a ,917 per-theater-average. This weekend it was Tenet’s turn.(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon / © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)Evaluating just how these recent releases have been doing with many theaters still not operating and responsible social distancing limiting the amount of patrons in any auditorium may be a fool’s game. But numbers can be read through history and, until further trends reveal themselves, the way we have been looking at them is through an estimation of how they may have done in a normal year. That led to the evaluation that the current box office leaders have been doing somewhere around 2.5-to-3-times less than they may have the previous year. Looking ahead to Tenet this weekend, we looked back at Nolan’s most recent non-Batman/non-DiCaprio offerings and saw that Interstellar opened to .5 million (in November 2014) and Dunkirk started with .5 million (in July of 2017). So somewhere in the high teens, up to around million, felt like a confident bet with realistic expectations heading into the weekend. And that is where the movie landed, with an estimated .2 million over the four-day holiday weekend, as well as from scattered advance screenings going back to Monday.Labeling this as either good or disappointing is still premature. After all, Tenet pretty much has theaters all to itself through the month of September until Warner Bros. challenges itself directly with Wonder Woman 1984 on October 2. One thing that does seem to be true is that – whatever the size of the audience may be – word-of-mouth appears to continue to remain a factor in these films staying power. Unhinged has fallen into a similar pattern as other adult-themed late-August releases such as 2002’s Undisputed (.54 million opening / .76 million total), 2012’s Hit Run (.52 million / .74 million), and 2013’s vehicular thriller Getaway (.5 million / .5 million). Unhinged’s estimated .67 million this weekend brings its total to .3 million after 17 days. The New Mutants, on other hand, dropped 59% from its million start, bringing its 10-day total to .6 million (.2 million with the holiday). That may be more than August 2018’s mutant-esque Fox offering, The Darkest Minds, had at this point (.98 million after a .84 million start), but let’s also look back at six August releases from 2011-16 that opened between .5-.5 million for some further comparison: Mechanic: Resurrection, You’re Next, Our Idiot Brother, Jobs, Ricki and the Flash, and Florence Foster Jenkins had each earned between million and .64 million after 10 days. In August 2017, another long-delayed and ultimately critically-reviled adaptation, The Dark Tower, opened to .1 million, dropped 59.2% in its second weekend, and had .2 million after 10 days. Divide that by three and you have .4 million, just shy of The New Mutants’ current total. That suggests Mutants could be headed for a final theatrical tally between .9 million and .3 million. It’s a single example, but maybe there is something to the rule of three in measuring current box office totals. So where does that leave Tenet? Dunkirk and Interstellar finished with near-identical grosses of 8,045,546 and 8,020,017, and no one is expecting those kind of heights. With theaters more widely opened overseas than in the U.S., Tenet has grossed over 0 million worldwide so far. Using our crude formula, Tenet would have grossed somewhere between .5 million and .6 million in a normal time, which would have made it just the fourth film to open higher than million in the month of September, a feat achieved just the past three years with the It films and 2018’s The Nun. Living directly with the numbers we have now, only one film this century has gone on to gross over 0 million when starting with less than million, and that was 20 years ago with Remember the Titans. The rest of the historical September releases that opened between million and million have an average final gross of million. It will be interesting to see whether Tenet will face smaller week-on-week drops given the lack of competition, or whether the numbers will drop off as might normally be expected, especially given that Tenet is also the second-lowest rated Nolan film on the Tomatometer at 74%. (Interstellar stands at 72%.)On This Weekend s Dates In Box Office History (Photo by © Warner Bros. )With so little action in our current-day box office, we re casting our eyes back this week.September 4: In a bit of symmetry, Christopher Nolan’s Inception crossed 5 million with .69 million on its 51st day of release 10 years ago.September 5: In 2016, Suicide Squad grossed .77 million on its 32nd day of release to cross 0 million. In 2011, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows made 8,509 on day 53 of its release. It took 74 days for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to make it to 0 million, which it did on this day in 2009 pulling in 3,311.September 6: Night Shyamalan’s Signs grossed .29 million to pass the 0 million mark on its 36th in 2002. That same day, Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition made 0,349 to get over the 0 million hump on its 57th day. It only took 24 days for Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 to do it with .74 million on this date in 2009. This has also been a good date for Universal sequels. In 2003, American Wedding made 4,145 to pass 0 million on its 37th day; then in 2008, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor made 7,455 to pass 0 million, also on its 37th day. Of course, that was nothing compared to Disney’s The Lion King redux making 1,156 to pass 5 million on its 50th day in theaters just last year.September 7: In 2012, another Universal sequel, The Bourne Legacy, grossed .13 million to cross 0 million on day 29 of its theatrical run. That was a lot faster than Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, which finally crossed the 0 million mark with ,114 on its 94th day of release in 2008.What Should Have Been This Weekend(Photo by © Paramount)At one time, this weekend belonged to A Quiet Place Part II, one of the first films moved out of its original opening slots back in March. It is now slated to open on April 23, 2021. The original Labor Day weekend slate – before any of the COVID-19 upheavals – was meant to include Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunter, with Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa. Now it will open alongside John Krasinski’s sequel on the same date next year. Peter Jackson’s documentary, The Beatles: Get Back, about the band’s rooftop concert, will now open on August 27 of next year.On the Vine: Broken Hearts Heading to Theaters OnlyThe widest release in theaters next week will be the romantic comedy, The Broken Hearts Gallery, starring Geraldine Viswanathan, who you may know from from Blockers and Bad Education. The film was supposed to open in July, was then delayed to August until finally settling in for a September release, exclusively in theaters.Erik Childress can be heard each week evaluating box office on WGN Radio with Nick Digilio as well as on Business First AM with Angela Miles and his Movie Madness Podcast.[box office figures via Box Office Mojo]
