Has Kreizler, as a character, changed in how you interpret him since you first took on the role?Daniel Brühl: Knowing about Sara s psychological skills, Laszlo Kreizler is eventually willing to share power and to give in and to let Sarah Howard be in charge of that new mystery and of that new case. He becomes, emotionally, a more open-minded man thanks to the friendship with Sara and John and eventually even finds a kindred spirit, someone who he finds very fascinating.It s so interesting because my wife is an alienist in real life. And she told me that many times the most brilliant psychologists you know, become very nervous when they have to deal with, you know, their own introspection and their own inner life. So they may be brilliant in, you know, analyzing their environment, and yet, they have problems in expressing what they are going through.The theme of child murder continues in season 2. Is it tough to separate yourself from the dark subject matter of the show?Brühl: It didn t affect me that much when we were shooting the actual show, but watching it now gives me nightmares. I m the father of a little boy and expecting my second baby to arrive soon. The fact that this show this time around deals more with motherhood and fatherhood, respectively, felt more universal. It was also interesting to realize how engaged my wife was when she watched the show. What message are you hoping viewers will take away from watching?Brühl: It is very sad to see how long it takes for mankind to really make a change. It s funny how history goes in waves. I wouldn t say that it always goes in the wrong direction. Sometimes we advance, sometimes we evolve, and then, sometimes we go three steps back. So it is sadly fascinating to see that a story set in 1897 and a book written about that period that was published in the 1990s still feels so current.And what the story tells us is that it always takes a couple of courageous liberal modern minds to make a change. Unfortunately, mankind needs to have the worst things happen in order to move on. So the eruption that, fortunately, we witness these days internationally, due to the things that happened in the U.S., gives me a bit of optimism, because that avalanche, that eruption, and that message that racism has to stop, is being heard loudly and clearly at the moment. I hope that, finally, we will change and, hopefully, carry on doing so. And viewers coming fresh to the series will find a number of unexpected things.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to some of the cast and Jupiter’s Legacy co-creator Mark Millar to determine the five things you need to know before venturing into the show.1. It Is a Generational Saga(Photo by Netflix)The notion of generational superheroes – that is, parent and child (or a close relation) sharing abilities and a costumed identity – is not exactly a new idea in comic books. Titles like Starman and The Flash dived deep into the idea in the 1990s. Also, the more recent Flash TV series broached the topic a few years ago while still fighting a villain of the year, and Superman Lois sees Clark learning how to be there for his teenage sons.But in the case of Jupiter’s Legacy, facing the reality that a younger generation needs to step up is very much the theme of the show.“[It’s] a metaphor for how you can pass on traditions, how you can pass on family values, how you can pass on love and connection,” as star Josh Duhmel, who plays the premiere hero Utopian, put it. “I think that there s a lot to be said for how you raise your kids and how important it is to connect with them or there s a good chance you lose them.”Indeed, the possibility of losing his children quickly becomes one of Utopian’s concerns.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)As the program begins, his son Brandon Sampson (Andrew Horton) – aka Paragon – makes a choice Utopian disapproves of, setting into motion a lot of soul searching among the Union and their children about what they really want for the future.“I think Brandon puts an enormous amount of pressure upon himself, which definitely doesn t help things,” Horton said when asked about Utopian’s expectations for his son. Brandon and [his sister] Chloe are told by their father that these gifts are to help other people less fortunate. That s an onus on them to use their powers for good and to maybe follow in their parents footsteps. But it s never explicitly said within the show that this is what you must do: You must be the same as us.' Nevertheless, Brandon takes onboard the idea that he should be just like his father and “trips himself up because he s a more flawed human being.”In Horton’s mind, he s kind of always going to be set up for failure when you ve got the Utopian as someone to follow. And to some extent, that fear of failure leads to the choices his sister Chloe (Elena Kampouris) and their cousins make both before the story begins and after Brandon s tactical error.2. It Uses the Concept of the Justice League as Familiar Grounding(Photo by Netflix)Although the original members of the Union have similar abilities, aspects of their look and more specialized powers will remind viewers of DC Comics’ Justice League of America. According to Millar, using that group’s dynamic over, say, the Avengers, is a completely intentional choice.“That s a perfect entry point for the mainstream audience,” he explained. “Those kinds of characters we grew up with also stretch all the way back 5,000 years to the Greek myths and then, really, the Egyptian myths, [and] in some ways go back to Sumer as well, 11,000 years ago — Babylonian myths.”The archetypal stature means a character like Utopian is immediately recognizable even if he has longish white hair and a beard when he first arrives on the scene.“The world is very, very plugged in to the idea of [this] bunch of people: You know, there s a Superman-like guy, there s a Wonder Woman–like woman, in the same way we had Zeus and Jupiter and we had Aphrodite and everything,” Millar said. “These archetypes have been around for a long time, in a way that other superheroes don t really have. There s a pantheon of gods that the Justice League really feels like [and] that people get.”Of course, testing those archetypes via their children becomes one of the key sources of tension within Jupiter’s Legacy.3. It Challenges a Very Specific Code of Superhero Conduct(Photo by Netflix)Taking their cues from pop culture antecedents like the Justice League, the first generation Union members adhere to a strict code Sheldon Sampson (Utopian s civilian name) put down during their founding nearly a century before the story begins: their powers must always be used to help others, they must never govern over the nation, and they do not kill. The code is rooted in Millar’s appreciate of the American culture he grew up experiencing via imported television, film, and music, but it also sets down three easy-to-understand concepts that, nonetheless, lead to a lot of heartache when one must live by them.Duhamel, as himself, admitted he has some issues with the code, but absolutely agrees with his character that super-powered people should not use their powers to force a role in government.“If you give somebody [that] much power, that s just dangerous. They should just be there to serve,” he said.Nevertheless, the prohibition against killing left Duhamel with more angst because he can see situations where lethal force is understandable. One hypothetical he offered will strike a chord with parents: “If somebody is going to take my son out, I m going to take them out first, no matter what.”Conversations with the writers and producers put him more at ease with Sheldon’s absolutely belief that there is always a better way and, as viewers will see, Sheldon always adheres to the code.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)Mike Wade, who plays original Union member Fitz Small (aka The Flare), thinks his character’s appreciation of the code changes across the 60 or so years he operates as a superhero.“Fitz, I would say, sees Sheldon as an older brother; somebody that Fitz looks up to. A lot of people look up to Sheldon, he explained. So initially, Fitz felt that [same way about the code as Sheldon], but through battle and through sacrifice, [he] might ve changed and might not feel so strongly about the code like a lot of other people do.”Tenika Davis plays Fitz’s daughter Petra – the new Flare – and represents the younger generation on the issue.“Things like the code have to be amended and changed as things develop and grow,” Davis said. “I think the code is one of those things that is a bit outdated. So we respect it for the foundation it provided, but at the same time we re like, Yeah, it probably needs a few updates.' (Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)And, as viewers will see, there is no easy answer on how to respect the code or augment it to meet the challenges both generations of the Union face in the series.“I think it s such a complex issue,” Leslie Bibb added. Bibb plays Grace Sampson, a hero in her own right — the beloved Lady Liberty — and Utopian’s wife. While both the actress and her character see the code as a way of preventing the supers from becoming judge, jury, and executioner, they also understand why some of the younger generation will chafe against it as they face more powerful and ruthless adversaries.“I don t think it s black and white. I think that that s sort of what Grace s dilemma is [as the story unfolds],” she said. “I think that is a cool thing about the show. It doesn t really give you an answer. It poses these questions and hopefully, you walk away and you start thinking, and maybe it starts a conversation about something bigger.”4. It Is Not Ashamed of Superhero Costumes(Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)Another cool thing about the show: it literally wears the pulpy inspiration of the 1930s and ’40s superheroes on its sleeves. Sure, the younger generation may go for the black leather look of modern heroes, but the original Union members proudly wear garish colors into the 21st century.“When I think about my favorite costume ever, costume design ever, in a movie, I would say it s [from the] 1978 Superman,” Millar said. The suit, designed by Yvonne Blake, highlighted the design worn by the Man of Steel in the comics during the 30 years prior to the film. “She didn t really rethink it. She just thought, ‘What does Superman look like?’ and just made that work in real life. We did the same with this, we made it look like the heroes of that period. So the Golden Age heroes would have looked weird if they d had armor or oddly textured, metallic costumes, he said. They just look like superheroes in the very traditional sense, which I love. Nevertheless, the costumes may look strange to viewers as the program begins, but remember: the first generation Union members still represent a 1930s ideal of superheroes.5. It Will Surprise Readers of the Comic Book(Photo by Netflix)While the series is quite faithful to the comics – and its companion piece, Jupiter’s Circle – it will contain a few surprising changes as it unfolds across its eight episodes. But even before those developments transpire, readers may find they like Sheldon’s brother Walter (Ben Daniels) a lot more than they did in the comics.Although Daniels denied any conscious attempt to bring viewers to the character s side, he definitely wanted to convey “what it was like to have Clint Eastwood as your brother, who sails through life when you find it incredibly difficult.”In both the comic book and the show, Walter tends to be the first to naysay Sheldon – even after they get their powers – but as Daniels saw it, “He feels very downtrodden. He s a highly volatile person and highly sensitive person, and he has trouble regulating those emotions.”And though much of his anxiety melts away after his powers give him an almost universal telepathic range, the scars of his younger days remain.“I don t think it s about making him sympathetic. I think it s about making his actions 100 years later more understandable,” he added.

Governments are destabilized, certain parts of the world experienced a taste of peace while half its population was gone, and, seemingly, the US had a plan for Captain America.The episode also offered a number of introductions which seem to lead the mystery away from Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and toward an unexpected enemy. So let s dive in and glean what we can from the program s latest episode and what a new truth might mean for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).Couples Therapy, and Shipping Sam and Bucky(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)But before we get into the geopolitical aspects, let s give a few moments to Sam and Bucky s (Sebastian Stan) relationship. Yes, it is totally hetero and totally platonic, but it is interesting the way the Captain America strand of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has used film romance dynamics to charge scenes between Steve (Chris Evans) and his partners.Going by a certain reading of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky is very much Steve s ex while Sam is, essentially, the new boyfriend. By utilizing rom-com dynamics, the film created a great shorthand to understand the emotions involved. And once we get to Bucky and Sam sitting in that old Volkswagen in Captain America: Civil War, their rivalry for Steve s friendship proved to be a great source for comedy. That dynamic only grows stronger as events position them into being a couple.Or, at least a couple in terms of the way the Captain America movies engaged with the romance tropes. Dr. Raynor s (Amy Aquino) choice to immediately employ couples therapy tactics on them not only lampshades that aspect of the dynamic, but plays into the characters discomfort with being a de facto couple. Also, it once again proved to be wildly funny as both Mackie and Stan play off of each other in a truly great way. Whether their dynamic is purely Odd Couple or something more just depends on how intensely you ship them.But all their discomfort does lead to one key point about Bucky: he s worried Steve was wrong about his ability to change. Presumably, this will be Bucky s objective for the rest of the season.Sam Learns About The TruthJoel MearesIn 2003, Marvel released a series called The Truth: Red, White Black. Written by Robert Morales with art from Kyle Baker, it told the story of a parallel Super Soldier program conducted on Black servicemen during World War II. Much like the real-life Tuskegee Experiments, it was conducted under false pretenses and without the explicit consent of the men involved. In the Marvel Universe, the experiment led to the deaths of at least 299 men. The one survivor, Isaiah Bradley, wound up with the full benefits of the Super Soldier Serum. Unfortunately, the wider US government was not so accepting of a Black Captain America and Isaiah was sentenced to life in prison after he went AWOL to destroy a Nazi Super Soldier lab. He is later pardoned and released, but exists as a legend known widely to Black Americans, but to few outside that community.And thanks to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he s now a part of the MCU in the form of the great Carl Lumbly. His story has been altered somewhat – he is now a Korean War vet – but we think that context is more powerful for the MCU as the mid-20th Century is something of a blank slate for Marvel to work with. On a purely historical front, it s amazing for any modern series to even acknowledge Korea. And by placing Isaiah s story closer to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the government s disgraceful treatment of him – locking him away for 30 years – becomes just that much starker. At no point during the movement was anyone even aware of Isaiah!Then there s the truth for Sam here: a Black Captain America came into existence in 1951 and only Bucky knew about him. That s a tough fact to process and an indication of what might ve happened had Sam just kept the shield for himself. It is pretty easy to imagine the government burying him (literally) and handing it to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).Considering how easy it was for those Baltimore Police to not recognize the Falcon, the people propping up Walker probably wouldn t have to work too hard to make Sam disappear.Flag Smashers And Power Brokers(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Meanwhile, in Europe, we get a better idea of where the Flag-Smashers are coming from. In the wake of the Blip ending, a Global Repatriation Council was formed to help returning people reestablish their lives. According to Walker and Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett), this includes reactivating Social Security numbers (for US citizens), setting up healthcare options, and more. We also learn some of the people who were displaced now live in camps.But during the five years half the world s population was gone, people like Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) experienced a taste of a world without borders, worries of overpopulation, and (we assume) corporate autocracies besides Stark Industries. Reclaiming that version of the world is her stated fight and it s hard to argue with all her points. Some, though, are easier to combat as they sound eerily reminiscent of Thanos s grim calculus. How does one reclaim a world of only 3 billion people except by killing 3 billion undesirables ? That thinking can only lead to something awful. At the same time, the sense of community she seemingly clings to can be scaled to include the returnees – unless, of course, she believes all the world leaders who also returned would object to that.That ambiguity is baked into the character, of course, as she is partially based on Marvel Comics Flag-Smasher, Karl Morgenthau, a Swiss anti-nationalist who came into conflict with Captain America, The Punisher, and even the Red Skull. Though his intentions of a world without nationalistic superiority were noble, his preferred method to further his goal, terrorism, indicated a flaw in his thinking. Cap even told him as much.For the moment, we re going to assume Karli shares this flaw. But that s presuming her stated goal is true. Perhaps the Flag Smashers are just ruse. Her apparent association with Power Broker indicates a much more fluid morality.As the name implies, the Power Broker is a person of means who offers super abilities and assets for personal gain. Curiously, the first version of the character was introduced as a satire of the health and fitness craze emerging in the late 1970s. Some of his schemes revolved around a wrestling promotion for super-powered people. He also ran afoul of John Walker and Lemar Hoskins. But perhaps the most intriguing thing about the Power Broker is his long association with Dr. Karl Malus, a mad scientist interested in the creation and application of superpowers. Is it possible they are the source of the Super Soldier Serum powering the Flag Smashers?Malus previously appeared in the second season of Jessica Jones in the form of Callum Keith Rennie. There, he was one of the IGH scientists involved in the creation of Jessica s (Krysten Ritter) powers and her mother Alisa s (Janet McTeer) more problematic life. Malus presumably committed suicide when he blew up his lab, but as it is still unclear if the events of that series really happened in the MCU, the character could be in play. Or, at the very least, he could have perfected a stable serum variant for the Power Broker before his death.Well, presuming the Power Broker is the source of the serum Karli s using and the person hounding her via text messages. The story seems to be tying these things together, but it is possible they are separate things.Meanwhile, as Bucky notes, the arrival of a stable of Super Soldiers is a definite problem. If Karli got her hands on the serum, is there more out there? If it is in the hands of the Power Broker – for the moment, we re going to assume the series is using the nameless version of the character instead of Curtiss Jackson – they could unleash a terrible force on the world.Or a terrible force for Zemo to control. But we ll consider him more next week.Of Battlestars And U.S. Agents(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)As mentioned above, the episode also introduced Lemar Hoskins – aka Battlestar. The character has an interesting behind-the-scenes history which is relevant to the show s running themes. In preparation for John Walker to become Captain America in the comics in 1987, writer Mark Gruenwald decided he needed a Bucky of his own. Already established as a member of the Bold Urban Commandos (BUCs for short), he chose Lemar to become the fifth Bucky and appeared as such for a short while. Eventually, writer Dwayne McDuffie explained to him Buck is a derogatory term for African Americans originating from the days of slavery. The two agreed to rename him Battlestar and a story developed for Lemar to highlight the problem and switch to the new persona. The story also firmly established Lemar as Walker s partner instead of a sidekick.Considering the way The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has highlighted the treatment of Black superheroes thus far, we expect some of Battlestar s history will come into play across the remainder of the season. At the moment, he seems pretty happy to be part of the counterfeit Team Cap, but it is easy to imagine his status could change soon. In the moments we have with him so far, it is unclear if he is Walker s partner or sidekick. Clarifying that role will be key.Of course, some of that depends on what sort of man John Walker turns out to be. For the moment, he seems forthright, but that slight suggestion of territoriality in his last moments with Sam indicates he may not be as noble as Steve.Then again, has any man ever been as noble as Steve?The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.On an Apple device? Stan Lee: The World Loses a LegendEvery Stan Lee Movie RankedMarvel Stars Pay Tribute to Stan LeeAll Upcoming Stan Lee Movie CameosAs the story often goes, Stan Lee, who passed away early Monday morning, was tired of working at Martin Goodman’s comic book company. His wife, Joan, suggested he pitch one last title and do it the way he felt a comic story should be told. Alongside genius co-creator Jack Kirby, his “last” comic book was The Fantastic Four, which lead to an ongoing series of new titles and ushered in the Marvel Age of comics.But Lee, who always hoped to leave comics behind to write the Great American Novel, also had bigger ambitious for characters he co-created, including The Fantastic Four, Thor, Black Panther, and The X-Men. Early on, he saw that they had the potential to transfer to other media. Here’s just a few way he helped comic books in transitioning to film and television.He Worked On The 1960s Marvel Super Heroes CartoonWhile still writing titles and acting as an editor and art director for Marvel in 1966, Lee also worked on Grantray-Lawrence Animation s The Marvel Super Heroes animated series. While Goodman negotiated the deal with Grantray-Lawrence and the company chose which Marvel characters would be featured, Lee nonetheless worked on the series, helping to reform stories written by him and people like Kirby, Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, and others.The series focused on Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and Namor. Each starred in their own sub-series ripped from the pages of Marvel s recent comic books. The animation generally consisted of photocopied images pulled directly from recent issues of the various characters’ comics — or even early issues of The Avengers — with the images manipulated to create the illusion of animation and limited lip-sync. But despite its technical limitations, the series expanded Marvel’s reach into homes all over the country, creating life-long fans thanks to memorable theme songs for Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man. In interviews, Lee would admit he did not write the lyrics, but always wished he could claim those catchy tunes for himself.His Characters Came to Screen In the 1967 Fantastic Four Animated SeriesWhile not directly involved in the 1967 Hanna-Barbera Fantastic Four animated series, Lee’s influence could still be felt thanks to the story material adapted by the producers. Episodes featured key villains like The Mole Man and Galactus, while Dr. Doom’s origin received an episode-long origin story. The Skrulls and the Silver Surfer also made appearances and many of the stories were based on the early Lee and Kirby issues of Fantastic Four even as they were redesigned by Hanna-Barbera and comics legend Alex Toth.The series also led to the X-Men’s first television appearance when The Marvel Super Heroes adapted Fantastic Four #6, but substituted the Merry Mutants — referred to as “the Allies for Peace” — in for the FF, whose rights were already in the hands of Hanna-Barbera. Nowadays, rights confusion over characters is a well-known issue in the world of comics-to-screen adaptations, but this may be the first instance of comic-book characters disappearing from a television adaptation of one of their own stories.The 1970s: The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange Come to TVIn 1972, Lee became the publisher of Marvel Comics and largely left writing and creating to a new generation of writers, artists, and editors. And while he continued to have a hand in some creative aspects of the business – like the daily Spider-Man comic strip – Lee found himself shepherding the Marvel heroes through Hollywood as the characters began to emerge in the uncharted realm of live action. Before long, CBS debuted The Incredible Hulk.(Photo by ©Universal Television/courtesy Everett Collection)The 1977 series, starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Bruce Banner, was developed by Kenneth Johnson and followed the format of ABC s hit series The Fugitive. Each week, Banner would move into a new town and involve himself in local affairs until the Hulk explosively assisted Banner’s new friends. Sadly, word of the creature’s appearance would reach an investigative reporter hunting the Hulk, forcing Banner to look for peace somewhere else. The Incredible Hulk ran for five seasons.At nearly the same time, Lee sold CBS the rights to make a live-action version of The Amazing Spider-Man. Populating his world with new characters – J. Jonah Jameson was the only carryover in the regular cast – the show was not as successful as The Incredible Hulk, leading CBS to air it in a strange, inconsistent schedule. The two produced seasons amounted to only 13 episodes before the network pulled the plug.Nonetheless, the network soldiered on with a Dr. Strange pilot and two Captain America TV movies staring Reb Brown. Soon, Lee found himself spending more time in Los Angeles than in New York. In 1981, he and his wife finally moved to Los Angeles intent on making Marvel Productions a mover and shaker in film and television. Successes would include Marvel’s work on The Transformers and G.I. Joe. But after a handful of Incredible Hulk TV movies in the 1980s, television shows based on Marvel characters were few and far between. While Marvel regained a foothold in children s animation through the 1990s, it would not be until 2013’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that a Marvel live-action series would be a success.Lee s Characters Come to Dominate the Box Office, The MCU Is BornMeanwhile, on film, characters co-created by Lee grew to be a box office force in the early part of the 21st century. It all begins with 2000’s X-Men, which featured Lee and Kirby characters like Cyclops, Professor X, Magneto, and Jean Grey. These films, based on the company’s most popular characters, inspired many of Marvel’s executives to try their hand at producing films on their own. With the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Blade, Daredevil, and a few others unavailable, the newly formed Marvel Studios looked closer at Lee and Kirby characters like Iron Man and Thor for inspiration.They also identified another key aspect of Lee’s writing to create a unique momentum with their films. From The Fantastic Four on, the Marvel Comics Universe was a (mostly) cohesive world. Most of the new superheroes Lee and Kirby created were based in New York and crossed over into each other’s titles. The concept may have been borrowed from DC Comics’ Golden Age Justice Society of America, but Lee, Kirby, Ditko, and others made their world feel alive and dynamic with the Fantastic Four guest starring in The Amazing Spider-Man and vice-versa. Soon enough, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man. and the Wasp would form their own super team and revive Captain America to join their crew.Many years later, Marvel Studios would choose to adopt that crossover energy and lead to an Avengers of their own. As in comics, the pieces were always there to make it happen on film, but Lee’s efforts helped to point the way.The CameosAnd, of course, Stan Lee will leave a mark behind thanks to his penchant for making brief appearances in Marvel movies. It began innocuously enough in the 1989 TV movie The Trial of the Incredible Hulk and in some of the animated series, but that foundation led to his on-screen appearance in X-Men. He also appeared as a mail man in the first Fantastic Four film, receiving speaking lines. With his iconic look and distinctive voice, he would appear in all of the Marvel Studios films, as well as projects featuring characters he did not create, like Deadpool, and even make a cameo appearance in Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, poking fun at his hat-tip presence in comic book movies.(Photo by @ 20th Century Fox Film Corp. He got in the characters ways sometimes, or even reminded them that one person can make a difference. As with the universe-building he indulged in during the 1960s, the notion of creator cameos predated Lee s Incredible Hulk appearance, but he and the directors of each project gave it a unique spin each time. And when the first Marvel film unspools without a cameo from Stan the Man, his absence will be felt.

Littered with stars like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Charlize Theron, it s hard to walk three steps without bumping into an iconic filmmaker. We spotted Matthew A. Cherry, director of animated short favorite Hair Love, snapping a picture with Knives Out director Rian Johnson and chatting animatedly with double-nominee Cynthia Erivo (Best Actress, Best Song), and Robert De Niro laughing with co-star Al Pacino in front of the DJ booth.But the event isn t just about star-gazing – though it definitely is that. Supporting Actor nominees Tom Hanks, Joe Pesci, and Anthony Hopkins did not attend, while Best Actor noms Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, and Joaquin Phoenix also skipped the lunch. Banderas is still on the stage in Spain, while Driver just finished a week at SNL, and our media-shy Oscar frontrunner Phoenix (an advocate for the luncheon s choice to feature a plant-based menu) is likely taking a breather before the last stretch. Bombshell nominee Margot Robbie, who s currently on the Birds of Prey press tour, and Saoirse Ronan were also absent. Most shockingly, double nominee Scarlett Johansson stayed away from her first invitation to the event. The lack of acting nominations didn t dampen the two young actors spirits, either. Are you kidding? Today s great! said MacKay when we asked how he was doing before the event kicked off. And he has reason to be optimistic: 1917 has been raking in the hardware, recently adding a Producers Guild win and a Directors Guild win for the one-shot WWII epic. Mendes also seems to have finally embraced his frontrunner status; gone is the shocked expression he gave after his Best Director and Best Drama wins at the Golden Globes. The Skyfall director walked into the luncheon beaming, later snapping a comical photo with fellow nom Rian Johnson, who forwarded it to friend Edgar Wright, who then affectionately posted it on Twitter. Cinematography favorite Roger Deakins also took his buzz in stride, as is his famously laid-back nature; he has been here before, he joked, adding, I just try to enjoy the day. Parasite team continues to woo voters and rack-up frequent flyer milesTaika Waititi and Bong Joon-ho Joel MearesLast year, Lady Gaga was the biggest source of fascination for the Oscar elites. This year, that distinction falls to Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and his ever-present translator and fellow filmmaker Sharon Choi. Choi, who has been everywhere with Joon-ho this season delivering perfectly timed translations, joked that she might stumble at the finish. She told Rotten Tomatoes, I am almost scared the Oscars is where I might finally mess up. We re betting that won t happen, but we re all but assured to see Choi on the Oscar stage and the film s team will undoubtedly continue to own every room they step in. A constant of the season has been that when Team Parasite arrives, everyone – from Brad Pitt to Quentin Tarantino – takes notice. Parasite helmer Bong had to hop a flight to Rotterdam straight after the luncheon, where he is set to premiere a black-and-white print of his socio-political thriller at the Rotterdam Film Festival.QT looks to make history with another Screenplay winQuentin Tarantino. With a steady energy that hasn t wavered over the past weeks, the two-time Oscar winner chatted animatedly with his fellow nominees and the assorted press. He told Rotten Tomatoes that he obviously hopes the film wins in every category, but the Best Original Screenplay Oscar would be especially meaningful for him. It s a historic thing only one other guy has won three Original Screenplay Oscars, he said. If he wins for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, he would join Woody Allen (he s the one other guy ) and be on track to maybe surpass him with his rumored final film.And the class favorites are
