(Photo by 20th Century Fox/ courtesy Everett Collection)All Justin Timberlake Movies RankedCause for alarm: Justin Timberlake has only been in a few Certified Fresh movies in his career, projects that have really hit with critics – we hope he has a second job to fall back on.For now, Timberlake will just have to be content with the fact he s been in some of the really good flicks of the 2010s, like David Fincher s Best Picture nominee The Social Network, or the Coen brothers wry and sly take on the folk music, Inside Llewyn Davis. And no one can blame Timberlake for not being careful in cultivating his movie brand, making a few sex comedies (The Love Guru, Friends With Benefits), throwing in a few sci-fi risks (Southland Tales, In Time), and sweetening the stew with family movies (Yogi Bear, Shrek the Third).Timberlake s latest film, his first in three years, certainly falls in that last category: Trolls World Tour, which took the extraordinary step of skipping theatrical and going straight to on-demand. With the movie added to this list, we re sync as we look back on all Justin Timberlake movies ranked by Tomatometer!

From promising releases from new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week in Fresh Indie Finds. This week at the specialty box office, we find a documentary about a firebrand Texas journalist who famously dubbed President George W. Bush shrub (aka The little Bush) and a political thriller, starring Keira Knightley, about translator-turned-whistleblower Katharine Gun, who risked everything to bring light to an illegal spying operation by the United States of America. In our Indie Trailer section, we find new clips featuring Tye Sheridan and Jeff Goldblum and a new documentary on Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher.

lesh-and-blood human), Imhotep is an imposing villain, at times intoxicatingly so. He’s a larger-than-afterlife presence, making him an excellent foe for Fraser’s enthusiastic determination. It Shares the Same Exaggerated Gung-Ho Sense of Exploration(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Indiana Jones is a bad archeologist, but he’s an amazing hero. Same with O’Connell and Evie, who are destructive grave robbers even by 1920s standards. That’s not the point of these films, though. The point is to go on an adventure, using the past and exaggerated mysteries of foreign lands as inspiration.Watching O’Connell scream into a decomposing mummy’s face or watching Indy knock a Nazi into some propellers is a hoot, but the battles aren t necessarily what make the films so memorable. It’s the journey into the unknown, following our friendly heroes into archaic, unfamiliar terrain. The matinée serials and pulp magazines both franchises draw from harken back to a very specific era for exploration, one that didn’t ever truly exist as it appears in pop culture, yet feels very nostalgic. The characters of Indiana Jones and The Mummy both live at a turning point of world history, right at the cusp of what we’d recognize as the modern world. It doesn’t seem like there’s much new to discover, so instead, archaeologists Indy and Evie turn to history. And in the world of these films, there’s far more buried in the past than the modern world expects. It’s a romanticism of sorts, one that’s not without its problems, but it makes for an exciting adventure at the crossroads of the past and the present, the intersection of the known world and the unknown. Both The Mummy and Indiana Jones are Way More Violent Than You Might RememberEven though The Mummy is more of an action-adventure romp than a horror movie like its classic predecessor, there are still plenty of scares and suspenseful moments. Indiana Jones operates on a similar level, because it wouldn’t be as exhilarating to see Indy whip his way through danger unless viewers, on some level, really feared that danger. Still, even if you re aware that The Mummy boasts a few scary moments, if you haven’t rewatched it in a while, you might be shocked at just how violent it is.Raiders of the Lost Ark literally melts a dude’s face off during its climax when the Nazis open up the Ark of the Covenant, and who can forget the horrific sight of Mola Ram extracting a still-beating heart from a poor man s chest with his bare hands in Temple of Doom? Taking a page from the same playbook, The Mummy blasts a bunch of excavators with acid, and that’s just a warm-up. Imhotep steals eyes and tongues from his victims, flesh-eating beetles gorge themselves as they crawl beneath the skin of their victims, and there’s plenty of torture. That the movie is technically pretty bloodless only makes the extent of the other gore even more shocking to watch.Raiders of the Lost Ark is infamously rated PG, as the PG-13 rating hadn’t yet been introduced. The Mummy, on the other hand, does sport a PG-13 rating, but in classic Indiana Jones fashion, it pushes the limit. Archaeology is dangerous, violent business, or so these movies would have you think. But for those of us slogging through our decidedly less exciting everyday lives, adventures like The Mummy and the Indiana Jones franchise before it provided thrills and ignited our imaginations like few others did. We don t get a lot of movies like The Mummy any more, and that s perhaps why lots of folks still remember it with unparalleled affection. The Mummy opened in theaters on May 7, 1999.
(Photo by Touchstone/courtesy Everett Collection)All Conjuring Universe Movies RankedThe first Conjuring movie descended with one of the great marketing hooks: That the MPAA had slapped it was an R rating for simply being too scary. And, for once, the movie itself lived up to the marketing hype: With nary any blood or boobs, The Conjuring jammed audiences into a non-stop claustrophobic horror thrill ride, as Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated paranormal activity in the 70s. A Certified Fresh rating (a first for director James Wan) helps in securing a sequel, a 0 million worldwide box office haul all but guarantees it – and the Conjuring 2 was almost as scary as the original.Years later, the Conjuring Universe is in full-swing, having now expanded into one direct sequel and many spinoffs that have whisked audiences to locales like London, Rome, and Mexico. A second direct sequel is currently filming, more from The Nun is in the works, and this Friday, the franchise s central creepy doll, Annabelle, Comes Home. This all prompts a play date with the Conjuring Universe movies, all ranked by Tomatometer below!
So it wasn’t even close. The legend of John Wick only grew this weekend when it took the presumption of a tight battle for the top spot and turned it into a franchise growth that Lionsgate can be proud of. The Endgame crowd delivered a bit less than expected this weekend but with Wick’s foot firmly on the pedal this weekend, the Avengers never had a chance. King of the Crop: John Wick Unleashed With Million Debut(Photo by Summit Entertainment)Since 2016, Lionsgate has only had two films open over million (one of them being John Wick: Chapter Two) and another five open over million. They also have not had a 0 million grosser since Wonder in 2017 and only had one movie (Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral) gross a total higher than what John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum made this weekend: million and another million internationally. Not bad for a film series with humble beginnings whose original film grossed all of million domestic. JW3 is the second-highest 3-day opening of Keanu Reeves’ career. While The Matrix Reloaded is the highest with .7 million, the third chapter of that notable series (The Matrix Revolutions) opened on Wednesday and had .8 million in its first three days and a first weekend of .4 million. This is a success story all around for the actor, the studio and the filmmakers.Rotten Returns: The Sun Sets On WB As Star Joins Weakest Wide Openings(Photo by Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)There is no other way to describe The Sun Is Also A Star’s numbers this week than rotten. Warner Bros. did not seem to do much for the film marketing-wise and only got the film released in 2,073 theaters. That is the lowest wide launch for the studio since 2012’s Cloud Atlas opened in 2,008 theaters. The .6 million estimate for Sun ranks down there with Almost Heroes (.83 million), Lucky You (.71), Grind (.51), The Adventures of Pluto Nash (.18), Major League: Back to the Minors (.08) and the Zac Efron DJ film, We Are Your Friends (.76) for WB lows on films opening in over 2,000 theaters. The Top Ten And Beyond: Endgame Still Eyeing The All-Time Record(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios / courtesy Everett Collection)So where is Avengers: Endgame after four weeks? At 0 million it is now officially the second-highest grossing film of all-time both domestically. Worldwide, it sits at .61 billion still chasing down Avatar’s .78 billion with just 3 million to go. However it has fallen off of The Force Awakens’ pace by million and all of a sudden falling back to just the 11th best fourth weekend of all-time, it is pretty guaranteed at this point that J.J. Abrams’ film will remain the all-time domestic champion.Pokemon Detective Pikachu finds itself on similar ground with Hotel Transylvania 3 which had .7 million after its second weekend of wide release. Adam Sandler’s animated sequel made .7 million that weekend while the Pikachu made .8 million and stands at million. That suggests the 0 million production is headed somewhere around 7 million domestic. It has made 6 million worldwide to date. The rest of the Top Ten is a sad place. Not just with dogs dying over and over in A Dog’s Journey, but the numbers for the sequel are just not up to Universal’s expectations. They had a surprise little hit with A Dog’s Purpose which opened to .2 million in January 2017 and finished with .5 million domestic and 5 million worldwide. Journey opened to just million and is going to have to stretch hard to reach million. Maybe even million. And it just gets more depressing from there. Any movie making more than the Certified Fresh bomb Long Shot on this list has been critically reviled, like STX’s double failure of UglyDolls (.2 million/30%) and Poms ( million/32%). And for the third straight week The Intruder ( million/29%) managed to beat the Charlize Theron/Seth Rogen comedy. Looks as if The Hustle (.1 million/15%) is going to outgross it too. This Time Last Year: Deadpool Continued The Summer Superhero Dominance(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection)Audiences substituted one group of superheroes for another when Deadpool 2 took over the top spot from the Avengers with a 5.5 million start. Avengers: Infinity War fell to second place and was just short of 0 million. Book Club started much better than Poms did last week, opening in third with .5 million. Finally, the controversial family film, Show Dogs, opened to just million and was later edited to remove its offensive take on consent. The Top Ten films grossed an impressive 0.4 million but they averaged a dismal 50.4% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top Ten grossed an estimated 1.8 million and averaged 53.4%.On the Vine: Disney Tries To Avoid Another Dumbo Will Booksmart’s Critical Support Be Enough?(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection)Disney hopes to avoid another Memorial Day disappointment with their second live-action remake of 2019 with Aladdin. Can Will Smith replace the memory of Robin Williams or will the film go the way of Dumbo? Meanwhile, James Gunn is producing the bizarro Superman tale, Brightburn, a horror film about an intergalactic child using his powers for evil. Finally there is Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut, Booksmart, which drew raves at SXSW this year (still a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer). But can the already struggling United Artists Releasing partnership between Annapurna, MGM and Orion successfully get the word out or will this be doomed to discovery after it leaves theaters? The Full Top 10: May 17-19John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .02 million (.02 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .41 million (0.80 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – .81 million (.00 million total)A Dog's Journey (2019) 51% – .00 million (.00 million total)The Hustle (2019) 14% – .08 million (.14 million total)The Intruder (2019) 33% – .02 million (.05 million total)Long Shot (2019) 81% – .40 million (.7 million total)The Sun Is Also a Star (2019) 52% – .60 million (.60 million total)Poms (2019) 36% – .09 million (.01 million total)UglyDolls (2019) 28% – .60 million (.24 million total)
亚博体彩 2. THIS WEEK IN REPLACING DICAPRIO, PART 2: SAM ROCKWELL AND RICHARD JEWELL(Photo by Fox Searchlight)DiCaprio had also previously been attached to star in Clint Eastwood s next film as director, Richard Jewell (previously titled The Ballad of Richard Jewell), but his role has now gone to Sam Rockwell instead. The title refers to a security guard who discovered a suspicious backpack bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Rockwell will play Jewell s defense attorney, and the title role is going to Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya. (At one point, that role would have gone to Jonah Hill, when he was physically much heavier.) The cast for the film expanded even further this week, though, as Kathy Bates will also be co-starring as Jewell s mother. In related news, Paul Walter Hauser also signed on this week for a lower profile film, Silk Road, which is also based on a true crime story.3. NETFLIX ADAPTING HIT VIDEO GAME THE DIVISION WITH JESSICA CHASTAIN AND JAKE GYLLENHAAL(Photo by JA, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are so many Marvel movies (over 30 if you include the various Sony and Fox movies) that it s rare to find a big star who hasn t appeared in at least one of them. Jessica Chastain co-starred as an alien in last week s Dark Phoenix, and Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, and we now know that they will both headline an upcoming video game movie. Both of them actually joined the movie based on Tom Clancy s The Division three years ago, but that was so long ago that, until this week, it didn t seem like a sure thing that either was still attached. The big reveal this week is that Netflix has stepped in to produce and distribute The Division, which will be the next film directed by David Leitch, who s coming off Certified Fresh action hits in Atomic Blonde (78%) and Deadpool 2 (83%). Tom Clancy s The Division is an action role-playing game set in New York City following a mass genocide from a viral attack.4. NETFLIX ENLISTS COCO WRITER FOR THEIR TAKE ON CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)Ostensibly inspired by the box office successes of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, Walden Media started adapting C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia in 2005 with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. That first movie was a box office smash (5 million globally), but the second (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) and third (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) both dropped by nearly half with 9 million and 5 million, respectively. (The third film also dipped the franchise into Rotten territory.) Disney released the first two films, and Fox the third, but nine years later, Netflix now has the rights. To get things started, Netflix has hired screenwriter Matthew Aldrich (who cowrote Pixar s Coco, Certified Fresh at 97%) to work on their ambitious adaptations of Lewis seven novels into both movies and at least one series.5. MELISSA MCCARTHY S ST. VINCENT REUNION THE STARLING (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Like many comic actors, Melissa McCarthy frequently dips her cinematic toes into more dramatic fare (like last year s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Certified Fresh at 98%). McCarthy arguably started doing this in 2014 with the dramedy St. Vincent (Certified Fresh 77%), co-starring Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, and Chris O Dowd. St. Vincent was directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures), who had planned to direct a psychiatric dramedy called Fruit Loops (with Woody Harrelson) next, until Disney recently let it go as part of their new Fox plans. Quickly shifting gears, Melfi will instead next direct a tragic comedy called The Starling, with McCarthy and O Dowd reuniting from St. Vincent as a married couple struggling with grief.6. BO BURNHAM WILL WRITE THE NEW SESAME STREET MOVIE S SONGS (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although January is historically seen as a dump month, studios have more recently been enjoying success with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in mid-January (Glass in 2019, Hidden Figures in 2017, Ride Along 2 in 2016, etc.). Warner Bros. is developing a Sesame Street musical starring Anne Hathaway, and they chose a release date of January 15, 2021 (which would have been MLK s 92nd birthday) a while back. Filming isn t expected to start until April of next year, and this week, we found out who will be writing the new Sesame Street songs. That role has gone to comedian-turned-writer-director Bo Burnham, who is coming off a great 2018 after his award-winning feature directorial debut with teen drama Eighth Grade (Certified Fresh at 99%). As pointed out in this piece, Burnham made an early mark on YouTube by performing raunchy songs like My Whole Family Thinks I m Gay, but it s pretty obvious that his Sesame Street songs won t be like that. Or so we assume.7. CLASSIC HORROR FILM BLACK CHRISTMAS GETTING REMADE (AGAIN)(Photo by MGM courtesy Everett Collection)Possibly more than any other genre, horror movies are particularly ripe for remakes, mostly because they can be made relatively affordably with a high potential box office return. In 2006, one such remake was Black Christmas (Rotten at 15%), based on the influential early 1974 slasher of the same title (Fresh at 71%). Both films featured young actresses as sorority house members who later became more famous: Margot Kidder (Superman) in the original film, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV s Fargo) in the remake. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures are rushing to remake Black Christmas again, and the lead actress this time around will be Imogen Poots, who co-starred in 2016 s Green Room. We say rushing because Universal has scheduled Black Christmas for just six months from now (December 13, 2019), up against the Jumanji sequel. The updated film will be directed by Sophia Takal, who co-wrote the script with April Wolfe, which gives the remake a unique female perspective that might be exactly the jolt it needs.Rotten Ideas2. KEVIN HART REMAKING BILL MURRAY S SCROOGED (Photo by Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures)Bill Murray s zombie comedy The Dead Don t Die is in theaters this weekend, and he s all over The Weekly Ketchup as well. This is the third story with Murray connections, following Ghostbusters 3 and The Starling (which is a reunion project for St. Vincent, in which Bill Murray starred). Although they don t always hit financially, remakes remain popular with Hollywood because many of them can be made relatively affordably (compared to say, superhero movies), but still have name brand familiarity. In 1988, Bill Murray starred in Scrooged (Fresh at 70%), which was itself basically a remake (more specificially a reimagination) of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Well, that remake is going to get a remake, because Kevin Hart is producing and is expected to star in a Scrooged remake for Paramount Pictures. The Scrooged remake does not yet have a screenwriter or director, so it s probably at least a few Christmases away.1. ANIMATED SPICE GIRLS MOVIE IN THE WORKS(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Spice Girls movie, Spice World (Rotten at 35%), which unironically had absolutely nothing to do with Frank Herbert s Dune (melange jokes for the win). As with all mortals, time marches on even for the Spice Girls, but Paramount Pictures has figured out a way to make another Spice Girls movie: animation. All five original Spice Girls members are signed on to star in the new animated film, which will feature both their hit songs and new songs as well. The Spice Girls movie is part of a new Paramount Animation slate that aims to release two movies a year, starting in 2020 with The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020) and the comic book adaptation Rumble (7/31/2020). Paramount is also still developing an animated Mighty Mouse movie. This story isn t the week s Rotten Idea for those films, however, but because of Spice World s Tomatometer score.Like this?
