(Photo by Marvel Studios)As revealed in last week s episode of WandaVision, the sitcoms recreated in its earliest episodes truly mattered to Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen). The homages to The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, and Malcolm in the Middle literally recall a suitcase her father carried around Sokovia. The shows continued to offer her solace into her adulthood, as seen in the moment when she and Vision (Paul Bettany) first bonded at Avengers HQ. Although there is some discussion as to when the DVD box sets in the suitcase were available at the time, and a few other questions about the timeline, this thematic connection is key to the overall story. And, as the program’s director of photography Jess Hall told Rotten Tomatoes recently, it was there from very early on. It was in the first draft of [showrunner] Jac Schaeffer’s episode eight script that I read early in pre-production, he said. So it was in my mind and informed my approach from the beginning. In the flashback to her Sokovian child, viewers learned Dick Van Dyke was Wanda s favorite of the old American sitcoms exported to the Eastern European country. Naturally, it was the one the series took the greatest pains to recreate.Although, as Hall explained, It was never simply about recreating specific shows; we were also interested in eras and the stylistic and technical approach that defined specific periods in the history of television sitcoms, which led to many more visual departures in subsequent episodes. It also created a mission for Hall to find the line between completely recreating the visual look of a 1950s sitcom and that of the contemporary story the series is actually telling.(Photo by Marvel Studios)One vintage look the show avoided, for example, was that of the kinescope. Prior to the adoption of 2 videotape in 1957, many live programs were recorded by simply pointing a film camera at a TV monitor. The resulting image garbled the intended contrasts and warped the overall image, but created a “good enough” copy for these programs to be shipped off to affiliate broadcasters outside of, say, the New York area. For WandaVision, it would ve been distracting. But even in terms of series originally shot on film, like Bewtiched, Hall noted it is still rare to actually see the original quality of the recording.“One of the things in going back to the original [broadcast of shows] was you re obviously not looking at an ‘original original,’ because you re looking at something that was shot on film and then transferred to video,” he said. “What I was able to do on the early footage [of WandaVision] was get some prints of some of the early sitcoms on film. I got some from the original negative and I then projected those and I looked at those.”The research led to the first episode’s recreation of The Dick Van Dyke Show’s lighting scheme and camera angles. Although, thanks to the rare negatives he looked at, the WandaVision footage is sharper than most people’s memories of that vintage program.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Creating that clearer-than-you-remember image became the working philosophy for the subsequent recreations of shows like Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, and even Family Ties – itself now a vintage program to the horror of many viewers.“In my mind, the reference was actually much closer to the original, not necessarily what had been seen by viewers on the televisions of the period,” he said. “I think once you go to that level, you re potentially degrading the image so much that you re losing some of the original characteristics. So our objective was not quite that.”He added the aim of the photography was to look at the [vintage] material and then create something that somehow has a modernity to it.”That modernity matters as, ultimately, The Brady Bunch and Malcolm in the Middle prove to be what Wanda was watching at pivotal moments in her life. Presumably, Bewitched and Family Ties held similar positions her memories for traumas yet to be explored.Series director Matt Shankman identified shows that were iconic both in terms of era and integral to Wanda s history via an emotional connection established in her childhood,  Hall explained. Thus, recreating the camera movements of Family Ties became important on both the technical and thematic levels. And, as it happens, those details would create a strong connection for the audience young enough to remember when that show aired on NBC or when some of the older programs ran in syndication — to say nothing of the people who may remember when Dick Van Dyke first aired!(Photo by Marvel Studios)To younger viewers, though, notions of fuzzy images caused by poor antenna reception, overworked videotape sources, and even the lower resolution of television in the 20th century would require explanations all their own and had the potential to get in the way of the story. In situations like those, Hall, Shankman, and the rest of the crew would look critically at what they could do with the image and judge whether it was too much. This is maybe [correct for] the era, but does it really serve the dramatic purposes of our narrative? was the question Hall would ask. That s what really leads the choices, he said. This is why the boxier aspect ratio of the first three episodes gives way to the wider 16:9 frame of HDTVs in episode five. The cinematography adds a dimension to Wanda’s story — something Hall called “the difference between an original and the memory of an original.”“The reality that Wanda s creating is quite fragile. So I think absolute replication was definitely not the goal. It was more about kind of whirring the audience into this kind of comfortable sitcom reality that was vaguely nostalgic,” he said.Creating that comfort also meant the visuals could be disrupted to “bring in some of the more sinister aspects of the narrative.” A great example of this in episode one when Mr. Heart (Fred Melamed) starts choking; the Dick Van Dyke–inspired staging and lighting gives way to more modern photography for the series’ first chilling moment.(Photo by Marvel Studios)But even with the elements he wanted to recreate – the filmic look of 60-year-old sitcoms shot on 35mm film, for example – technical limitations still appeared by virtue of the changes in filmmaking technology. Hall called it an “inherent challenge” as the 4K resolution High Dynamic Range digital cameras used to capture WandaVision result in a substantially different image than a film camera from the 1960s.“You re taking that highest level of quality and then trying to degrade it. There s a kind of contradiction there,” he said. “But it s a really interesting way to approach it. If someone asked me to do [a show like WandaVision] five years ago, I might ve said, ‘Oh we should shoot that on 35 mil,’ or ‘Let s shoot that shoot on 16 mil, let s get an old video camera to do that.’ With this show, I really decided to do the whole show on one camera and to really try and use the technology to actually create the different looks.”In fact, a whole field of filmmaking is devoted to making the qualities of specific vintage film stocks available to cinematographers like Hall. The results can be striking, as seen in the first three episodes of WandaVision.“There was a lot of in-depth color science work that I did with Technicolor to place a huge-bandwidth, raw high-quality camera signal in an envelope, which restricted the signal down to a 1950s black-and-white look, or an early color film look, or an early video look. There are plenty of algorithms and lots of computer tech behind that color science, but Hall said he really relished exploring the digital platform to its full capabilities. That was really one of the exciting things about this project and sort of appropriate to Marvel, who I feel are always kind of at the cutting edge technologically. And by shooting the entire series in 4K HDR, Hall delved into the higher end of what can be captured on the format.“The potential to have richer colors is actually technically a possibility now,” he said. “That really opened up a whole world for me in terms of what I looked at on the comic book reference, which had this incredibly vivid color.”(Photo by Marvel Studios)The results lead to the dynamic contrast in scenes set outside Wanda’s Hex, the colors on display when Monica steps through the barrier in episode seven, and the beauty of the images within Wanda s recreation of classic sitcoms.Of course, recreating sitcoms led to one more challenge for Hall: the three-camera set-up itself. Unlike movies, which typically light and shoot one angle of a scene at a time, sitcoms typically light an entire stage with three cameras following the actors as they play out a scene. In many productions, the job of editing the shots was done on the fly as a videotape recorded the resulting program. Other shows would take the material caught be the three cameras to the editing room and build the episode there. For WandaVision’s debut episode, the production mounted a full live-to-tape recording in front of a studio audience. episode five — the Family Ties-inspired episode — was also shot in the three camera set-up, but lacked a studio audience, a difference sure to please fans of television production.Nevertheless, lighting for three simultaneously running cameras taught Hall — a veteran of single-camera productions — a new set of skills.“You ve got to light for the 180 [degrees of the stage]. You re shooting a wide shot and two medium shots at the same time or you re shooting a two shot and two close ups at the same time,” he said. That means finding a lighting scheme which serves several cameras at once while still conveying the intent of each shot. He credited Shankman, a veteran sitcom actor from shows like Just The Ten of Us, with putting him through a “sitcom bootcamp” to hone the multicamera discipline. As a result, they wound up shooting scenes outside the Hex with multiple cameras.“There were action sequences that required coverage. And if you ve got a stunt, you might as well put a third camera on it because it might not be replicated again,” he said. Nevertheless, he admitted there were times he was happy to be out of the studio and on location with the S.W.O.R.D. crew or in Westview’s beautifully manicured exteriors. “I think the location work definitely provided some light relief from the set work, which became quite intense,” he said. “But this show had so much diversity in it, you never had a chance of getting bored because every day was different.”(Photo by Marvel Studios)Near the end of episode eight, Hall had the opportunity to turn the camera at his own lights just as Wanda came to understand why she started recreating old TV shows in the first place. As he put it, it s a self-reflexive moment that exposes the constructed reality of a show which thematically features a constructed reality at its core. And though we may not yet know the full extent of what Wanda, as the Scarlet Witch, can construct, the moment stands as one of the most fascinating in terms of what it took to tell her story. We are revealing the mechanisms of the medium itself and illustrating to the spectator that their perception of reality is manufactured, subject to change and transformation, Hall said. With one episode or revelations yet to be transmitted, we can t wait to see how Hall and his team photograph WandaVision s conclusion. The WandaVision season 1 finale premieres on Friday, March 5 on Disney+.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. What it is: From creators (and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia vets) Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney (who also stars), Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet is a traditional workplace comedy in that it features an overbearing, self-involved, and oft-clueless boss overseeing a team of quirky misfits. But by placing it in the unexplored setting of a hit video game production company, it’s a fun look behind the curtain of the ever-growing world of fanboys and fangirls alike. Why you should watch it: McElhenney is in top comedic (and physical) form as the boss of Mythic Quest, but it’s the ensemble of both sitcom regulars and new faces that keeps you coming back for more. Charlotte Nicdao in particular co-leads as a disgruntled, undervalued employee and manages to humanize her neuroticism to endearing and hilarious effect. Season 2 premieres May 7 on Apple TV+.Where to watch: Apple TV+Commitment: Approx. 5.5 hours (for the first season and Everlight special)

The stylish, gritty descent into the criminal underworld rocked both sides of the Atlantic, which then gave Ritchie the opportunity to give his style an even slicker, international sheen with Snatch. So synonymous is Ritchie with this style and subject matter that no matter where his career takes him, whenever he returns to this topic it s always celebrated as a back-to-basics comeback. RocknRolla, for example, helped sweep away the sour tastes of Swept Away and Revolver. And now The Gentlemen and Wrath of Man have arrived as counterpoint to the blockbuster bombast of Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Methuselah Man, Moonfall, Popeye, and Scarface. This WEEK S TOP STORYKHALEESI S HAND AND HUSBAND TEAM UP FOR GOOD, BAD UNDEAD(Photo by RCF, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Increasingly, there are a handful of pop culture franchises that together account for the majority of movie stars (the MCU, the DCEU, etc.), and one of those is the cast of HBO s Game of Thrones (especially for British and European actors). Two of the more prominent American stars of Game of Thrones were Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), and this week, they both signed up for the same vampire movie called Good, Bad Undead. Dinklage will star as the latest in the long line of vampire hunters named Van Helsing, and Momoa will play a vampire who has vowed never to kill again. Teaming up, the two run a grift where they travel from town to town and Van Helsing pretends to defeat the vampire. Good, Bad, Undead will be directed by Max Barbakow, who made his feature film debut with the upcoming Andy Samberg comedy Palm Springs (Fresh at 100%).Other Top Headlines1. SONY S OBSCURE MARVEL PLANS INCLUDE JACKPOT AND MADAME WEB (Photo by Bennett Raglin/Getty Images)In case you missed the news, earlier this month, it was confirmed that Sony Pictures is now using the awkward acronym SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) to refer to its different projects based on Marvel Comics characters like Venom, Morbius, etc. It s no MCU, but maybe it ll grow on all of us. SPUMC refers to the hundreds of potential films that Sony retains the feature film rights to, most of which are characters that were first introduced in Spider-Man comic books. In addition to Venom and Morbius, Sony has been developing movies for Silver Sable and Black Cat (that project may now be shelved), Silk, and of course, the animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (10/7/2022). Many of the remaining characters are currently fairly obscure to mainstream audiences, but Sony appears to be betting that the movies are what will make them famous, not the other way around. One has to figure that is why they re confident with their plans for movies about Jackpot and Madame Web. The first story this week involved TV director S.J. Clarkson (Bates Motel, Jessica Jones), who has been hired by Sony to develop a mystery SPUMC project that most sources are saying (without confirmation) is probably Madame Web. In the comics, Madame Web has been the codename of two different Marvel characters, including a former Spider-Woman, but most people seem to think it s the original Madame Web, who was an elderly blind woman gifted with clairvoyance and other psychic abilities. Sony is reportedly eyeing either Charlize Theron or Amy Adams for the role, which either suggests it s the second Madame Web, or perhaps the movie is just de-aging the original Madame Web. The second story this week concerned Jackpot, an even more obscure Marvel superhero. Sony has hired TV showrunner Marc Guggenheim, the man behind most of the CW s Arrowverse shows, to start work on a Jackpot screenplay. The character in the comics has a rather convoluted story (including there being two different Jackpots), so there are many different ways the film could go, whatever Guggenheim wants to do with it/her/them.2. NICHOLAS HOULT REPLACED BY ESAI MORALES AS MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 VILLAIN (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Especially for big action movie franchises like Mission: Impossible, which take several months to film at locations all around the world, schedules matter, as studios need to know that any given actor will actually be available to show up on set. So as COVID-19 has delayed filming, we re going to see a few actors dropping out of roles. Case in point: Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) had been cast as the villain in Mission: Impossible 7, but he has left the project due to scheduling concerns, and he s been replaced by Esai Morales of Netflix s Ozark. At 57, Morales is 27 years older  than Hoult, which also begs the question whether the character is staying the same or if it s being rewritten during the hiatus. Mission: Impossible 7 was originally scheduled for July of next year, but the production delays have led to the film being rescheduled for November 19, 2021 (the week after Fantastic Beasts 3).3. RYAN GOSLING RETURNING TO OUTER SPACE (Photo by Daniel McFadden/©Universal Pictures)Ryan Gosling s most recent studio movie was 2018 s First Man (Certified Fresh at 89%) ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/first_man ), in which he portrayed astronaut Neil Armstrong during the first manned moon landing in 1969. Possibly coincidentally, Gosling is now attached to star in an adaptation of an upcoming (not yet titled) novel by Andy Weir, who also wrote the eponymous astronaut-in-peril novel upon which the 2015 Matt Damon movie The Martian ( Certified Fresh at 91%) was based. This new film will be produced and directed by the team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have previously teamed up on movies like 21 Jump Street (Certified Fresh at 84%) and The LEGO Movie (Certified Fresh at 96%). The novel reportedly has the code name Project Hail Mary and tells the story of a lone astronaut in space who is trying to save the planet.4. STEVEN SODERBERGH SPENT QUARANTINE WRITING A SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Claudette Barius/Fingerprint Releasing/©Amazon)Back in March when most people started their stay-at-home time, a popular meme that went around claimed that William Shakespeare used his own quarantine time during the Black Plague to write King Lear. Although most of us probably just used the extra free time to play video games or binge TV shows, surely some people were actually productive, right? Prolific director, producer, and screenwriter Steven Soderbergh (Ocean s 11, Magic Mike, Logan Lucky) apparently was. In an interview this week, Soderbergh revealed that the first 6 or 7 weeks of the lockdown, I finished 3 screenplays, with one of those three projects being a sequel to sex, lies, and videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%). It was an idea that had been circling for awhile, and I felt like I came up with the way to get back in, and so I wrote it, and I wanna make it. Sex, lies, and videotape was, of course, Soderbergh s feature film debut back in 1989, which was also one of the Sundance Film Festival s earliest crossover hits. It s not yet known if the sequel centers on the same characters originally played by James Spader, Andie MacDowell, and Peter Gallagher, or whether any of those actors will return. (Given how recently Soderbergh apparently came up with the concept and wrote it, it s possible he hasn t even talked to them yet.)5. DAVID ARQUETTE ALSO RETURNING IN SCREAM 5 AS DEPUTY DEWEY(Photo by ©Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)Just two weeks ago, we received our most recent and firmest confirmation that a Scream 5 is actually going to happen soon because Neve Campbell confirmed that she s been approached about returning as Sidney Prescott. Campbell is one third of a core trio of Scream franchise regulars along with David Arquette and Courtney Cox, and this week, Arquette also signed on to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in the new movie. The fifth Scream movie will be directed by the team called Radio Silence, which most recently gave us last summer s Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). Unfortunately, Wes Craven is no longer around to be involved with the project, but original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is now on board as executive producer. MINDY KALING TO CO-WRITE REESE WITHERSPOON S LEGALLY BLONDE 3 It feels like a third Legally Blonde has been in development for nearly all of the seventeen years since 2003 s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White Blonde (Rotten at 37%). This week s news suggests that we re going to have to wait a bit longer yet, but it s also positive news for fans in general. Mindy Kaling and TV screenwriter Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks Recreation) have been hired by MGM to write Legally Blonde 3, possibly starting from scratch. Reese Witherspoon will indeed return as lawyer Elle Woods, but no other details are known about the premise (such as, for example, whether Kaling might also co-star). In somewhat related news, original Legally Blonde screenwriters Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith have been hired by Warner Bros. to start work on a remake of their 1979 comedy hit 10 (Fresh at 68%), starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.7. NICK JONAS TO STAR IN COMIC BOOK MOVIE THE BLACKSMITH (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)To his credit, pop star-turned-actor Nick Jonas has arguably been one of the highlights of the two most recent Jumanji movies, and soon he s going to get the opportunity to see if his charisma can carry an entire action movie. Jonas and Laurence Fishburne have both signed on to star in the comic book adaptation The Blacksmith for action director Pierre Morel (Taken, Peppermint, From Paris with Love). Jonas will star in the thriller as a weapons expert for the intelligence community (sort of like Q from the James Bond movies) who has to go on the run when his lab is destroyed and his secret agent coworkers are murdered. Fishburne will play the weapons expert who formerly had the Blacksmith s job, and Jonas will also be joined by a female lead, but that role hasn t yet been cast yet.8. HALLE BERRY JOINING JOSH GAD IN DISASTER MOVIE MOONFALL(Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)With his World War II movie Midway in theaters last November, action and disaster movie director Roland Emmerich has turned his attention towards the disaster movie Moonfall, which is exactly what it sounds like (basically, Armageddon but with the Moon). Last week, Josh Gad became the first cast member to join what will end up being a large ensemble cast, and this week, he was joined by one of the original X-Men, Halle Berry. Berry will reportedly play a former astronaut who is now a NASA administrator, no doubt pacing about in a busy control room as reports of hazard and imminent destruction come down from the crew attempting to put the Moon back in orbit. Lionsgate reportedly hopes to release Moonfall in 2021 following a production start in Montreal in the fall (depending upon COVID-19 delays). For the trivia buffs out there, this year marks the 20th anniversary since the last time a film directed by Roland Emmerich scored a Fresh Tomatometer score, with The Patriot (Fresh at 61%) in 2000.9. DON T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER S DEAD (OR THAT THIS MOVIE IS GETTING REMADE) There is a longstanding argument to be made that the best candidates for movies to be remade are films that were bad the first time around. On the other hand, there is often a reason why a movie receives bad reviews, and sometimes, that reason has to do with the premise itself. In the case of the 1991 family comedy Don t Tell Mom the Babysitter s Dead ( Rotten at 36% ), the title may have also been a big part of the negative reaction, but it was at least memorable. With that in mind, a remake of Don t Tell Mom the Babysitter s Dead is indeed now in development with the twist this time around being that it will feature an African American family (Christina Applegate starred in the original). The remake will be directed by Bille Woodruff, whose filmography includes Honey (Rotten at 21%), Honey 2 (Rotten at 10%), and the Queen Latifah comedy Beauty Shop (Rotten at 38%).

Ghcxuf The Way Back (2020) 84% Underdog sports stories have been a reliable staple of the movie industry for a long time, so much so that they ve been molded and refined to fit into a fairly predictable formula. With that in mind, it usually takes something extra to make one stand out, and critics say this week s The Way Back has that in an outstanding performance from Ben Affleck. Affleck stars as Jack Cunningham, a construction worker who was once an elite high school basketball player but now spends his days and nights binge-drinking. When he gets an unexpected call from his alma mater to coach their hoops team, he reluctantly takes them up on the offer and begins a slow healing process as he attempts to shepherd his kids to a few meaningful wins. Critics say what makes The Way Back effective is that it s not merely an inspirational sports story, nor is it merely one about addiction, but a carefully crafted hybrid that doesn t provide easy answers or overly sentimental triumphant moments. It s also notable that, prior to filming the movie, Affleck himself endured some very public battles with addiction, and as a result, he brings a personal gravity to his role that leaps off the screen. Audiences will no doubt come to The Way Back with certain expectations, simply based on the fact that it s a story about a troubled new coach learning to bond with his team, but if this doesn t hit all of those familiar beats in a predictable way, it still offers a worthwhile character study that might surprise a few moviegoers with its depth. 😈😈

(Yes, that Adolf.) Davis s performance is being heralded by critics as one of the best child debuts in years – he s hilarious and heartbreaking, nimbly navigating the tonal shifts Waititi s movie makes as Jojo befriends the Jewish girl his mother is hiding in the house and begins to question his blind allegiance to the Fuhrer (both the real and imagined one). Davis sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for our video series Fresh First and opened up about working with Waititi and Scarlett Johansson, how he s changed since shooting, and why cheese toasties are the ideal on-set snack.

亚博电子竞技 (Photo by © New Line Cinema)For years, 1995 s Mortal Kombat held the title of Best Video Game Adaptation ever according to the Tomatometer. But it was never quite a flawless victory for Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and co.: The much-beloved cheesefest, which follows the story of three handpicked martial artists who compete in an inter-dimensional fighting tournament in order to save the planet (really), might have been the best video game movie ever made, but it was still Rotten according to critics, with a Tomatometer score of 48%.For many fans of the game and the movie that so faithfully adapted it to screen, that score was spine-rippingly wrong. In the second episode of our new podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), our hosts Mark Ellis and Jacqueline Coley are going deep on Mortal Kombat, exploring the techno-driven tournament flick s journey to cult hit, how it managed to successfully bring the spirit of the game to the big screen where so many others failed, and why the filmmakers tamped down the source material s infamous violence.
