And why is that? Well, it’s anchored by a likable performance by Sandra Bullock, who plays a cybersecurity specialist trapped in ahem the net of a Hitchockian suspense-thriller involving stolen identities, cyberterrorists, and online pizza-ordering. The movie feels relatively grounded, as there are no cybernetically-enhanced characters, skateboarding villains, or naked bad guys who cut off their fingers. Director Irwin Winkler chose to use the newish technology of the internet to craft an old-fashioned suspense-thriller, as opposed to setting the film far in the future, like, say, the 2021 of Johnny Mnemonic. By blending low-stakes hacking (control-shift) with age-old storytelling, he made the most mainstream of the 1995 computer movies and the one that the least number of critics felt compelled to ESC.In other words, by playing it safe and smart, The Net claimed the best reviews. Winkler’s background as a producer on Goodfellas and Rocky helped, as he knew how to budget and steer a successful film. On the other hand, Johnny Mnemonic was a proposed independent film directed by a relative newcomer that became a summer tentpole and allegedly went through major edits just weeks before release. Similarly, Virtuosity was allegedly rewritten during production, and Washington and Crowe still dislike the movie. Hackers had no interest in playing it safe, and instead focused on the hacker counterculture, which left it open for critical disdain (it was too cool for critics — and most viewers at the time). The best thing about The Net is Sandra Bullock proving how well she can act in front of a computer screen. Todd A. Marks, a consultant on The Net, said, “Some actors can’t really act and type at the same time; Sandra could.” Watch The Net again, and you’ll see what we’re talking about.Highest Audience ScoreHackers 68%The Net 44%Virtuosity 32%Johnny Mnemonic 31%While the Ian Softley-directed Hackers didn’t light the world on fire during its brief September release, it managed to hack its way into the world’s consciousness by effusive word-of-mouth and passed-around VHS tapes. The film is loaded with multiple scenes of hacking and references to iconic cyberpunk author William Gibson (who wrote the original short story Johnny Mnemonic, by the way) and the Hacker Manifesto, but what makes it stand out is its focus on a family unit of likable outcasts who crash on each other s couches and roller-blade their way to victory. The cult classic is a scrappy film featuring authentic-feeling teenagers who go toe-to-toe with a nefarious computer security officer who calls himself The Plague (Fisher Stevens), and who is looking to get rich by embezzling from his employer. Re-watching Hackers in 2020, it’s neat to see how incredibly of-its-time it is, yet somehow also forward-thinking in its funky costuming (still popular today) and its casting of big-screen newcomers Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller. With over 122,000 audience ratings and reviews that declare it the best movie of all time, Hackers scores an easy win in this category by being both charmingly retro and timeless, thanks to its cyber-world and likable characters like Joey (Jesse Bradford), Cereal Killer (Matthew Lillard), Nikon (Laurence Mason), and Phreak (Renoly Santiago).Biggest Box Office Take(Photo by Everett Collection)The Net .5 millionVirtuosity millionJohnny Mnemonic millionHackers .5 millionThis was an easy win for The Net and Sandra Bullock, who was coming off of the 2 million-grossing While You Were Sleeping, in which she starred as a lonely woman who lies to an entire family about being the fiancè of a man in a coma, then falls in love with the man s brother, and everybody is cool with it. Bullock was so effortlessly likable, as she always is, that the world completely ignored the insanity of the plot. The same thing essentially happened with The Net, a Rotten movie with a 44% Audience Score that still somehow pulled in 1 million worldwide. Basically, The Net could have been replotted as a fishing movie or retitled While You Were Typing, and it still would have been popular if Bullock was the lead. Also, the PG-13 rating and prime July release were enough to make sure it made more money by its second week than the other three films. With that said, none of these films topped the box office during their opening weekends; Johnny Mnemonic debuted at #6, Virtuosity and Hackers both opened at #4, and even The Net only managed to debut at #2. This is remarkable when you consider that, in 1995, movies featuring a red-hot Denzel Washington or Keanu Reeves struggled to make money. Of course, both Johnny Mnemonic and Virtuosity were critically derided for being too silly and derivative, but the 1990s weren’t a particularly great time for virtual reality thrillers in general, as The Lawnmower Man, The Thirteenth Floor, and Ghost in the Machine all failed to crack the zeitgeist.Which Movie Aged the Best? While The Net has the most timeless and grounded plot involving identity theft and internet security, nowadays it plays like any other 1990s thriller, except that it ends with Sandra Bullock bonking a hitman on the head with a fire extinguisher. People still order pizza online, and online security and fraud are still a problem, but for all its foresight, The Net hasn’t inspired a cult following like that of Hackers. Hackers captured lightning in a bottle with memorable catchphrases ( Hack the planet! ), an inspired soundtrack featuring Prodigy and Orbital, and a singular dedication to sunglasses with circular lenses. The film is still mentioned in countless articles (here, here, here, here, and here), and costume designer Roger Burton’s eclectic fashion is beloved, even though in 1995, the actors were thinking “What the f**k is this guy on?” For the film s 20th anniversary, Shout Factory! released a loaded Blu-ray and the cast and crew screened the film all over the world to packed theaters.Virtuosity and Johnny Mnemonic aren t without a few moments of their own, but it’s hard to say they’ve aged the best when the lead actors and writers have virtually disowned them. Johnny Mnemonic still has its charms, though, like its cyberpunk dystopia and a long-haired Dolph Lundgren chewing up the scenery. And did we mention the porpoise? Yeah, Keanu takes Lundgren down with the help of a porpoise. That s worth something.Which Movie Got the Most Right? After scrolling through countless articles about the most realistic hacks and watching videos of hackers analyzing movie scenes, we’re going to go with Hackers here. The Net is a close second, but despite Todd A. Marks being proud of the work he did on that film, he admits “it’s a movie, not a documentary. It’s always a fine line between accurate and visually interesting.” Which makes sense, because if The Net was 100% accurate, it would be a 12-hour film mostly focused on computers loading data. Obviously we didn’t pick Virtuosity, since killer androids aren’t running amok (at least, not that we know of), and despite the very real dangers of email, the world hasn’t resorted to Johnny Mnemonic s data couriers to deliver sensitive information. Of course, Virtuosity and Johnny Mnemonic admittedly weren t striving for realism, and both were so highly speculative about what was possible with computers that we can’t necessarily say that they got things wrong. On the other hand, what Hackers did so well was to capture the actual spirit of, well, hackers. Vice’s Motherboard interviewed real hackers about their love for the film, and while they admit that it’s “fantastical Hollywood stuff” and that it borrowed from the plot of Superman III, they also say “it’s quite possibly the single greatest hacker film known to hackerkind.” The actors went to hacking schools and attended conventions to nail the culture, and they developed a camaraderie that is clearly seen on screen. Several of the “hacks” in the movie have even earned a seal of approval from techies, as the the TV station hack, the editing of the class attendance lists, and the creation of fake personal ads are all possible.Softley realized pretty early on that he didn’t just want to depict pretty people staring at computer screens, so he and Peter Chiang, the VFX supervisor, nearly drove themselves insane creating a visually appealing (and totally unrealistic) world to help audiences understand what exactly was going on. It looks dated now, but in 1995, with the budget they had, it was a brave new world. In the end, they did exactly what The Net s Marks described, skirting that fine line between accurate and visually interesting, and all they got for their trouble was a bona fide cult classic.Final Result(Photo by ©MGM courtesy Everett Collection)So who wins our little unofficial showdown of 1995 s cyber-thrillers? It s Hackers, of course, with its impeccable fashion sense, it s unforgettable one-liners, its earnest, surprisingly authentic portrayal of counterculture attitudes, and so much more. As The Plague would say, There is no right or wrong, only fun and boring, and Hackers is anything but boring, so if you ve never seen it, don t take our word and our very scientific findings here for it. Boot up or shut up.Hackers was released in U.S. theaters on September 15, 1995. It is available to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes, and it is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Undying commitment to the physical vision. And then it s about hitting somebody for money. Or respect, sure.Tonight s title bout: The best-reviewed boxing movies ever! In one corner, we have heavyweight classics like Rocky and Raging Bull. In the other, hungry newcomers like Creed and Million Dollar Baby. And in another corner (we have a lot of corners): hard-hitting documentaries, repped by When We Were Kings and Unforgivable Blackness. And, yes, we re going international in this corner: see Knuckle all the way from Ireland, and China Heavyweight, all the way from, er, China. To be a contender, the movie needed to put up a Fresh rating after 20 reviews, before we ranked them with our weighted formula calculating a film s Tomatometer score, its number of reviews, and year of release.Think you got what it takes to take on the champs? KING OF THE CROP: ENDGAME MISSES ONE RECORD BUT APPROACHES ANOTHER(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The Endgame is still strong. In just ten days it has passed 0 million, managing to do what it took James Cameron’s Titanic to do in 252. With nearly 0 million, the film is still million ahead of the pace of The Force Awakens. That is down from the 0 million lead it had after last weekend. Part of that is due to Avengers: Endgame only having the second greatest second weekend of all-time (5.8 million) behind Force Awakens’ 9.2 million. Marvel’s juggernaut also fell to third place on the all-time daily tallys for Monday and Tuesday on opening week and second place on Wednesday and Thursday (for non-opening days.) This weekend’s drop (59.2%) was in line with Age of Ultron’s 59.4% and Captain America: Civil War (59.5%) which is still rather impressive given it bested the all-time opening record by 0 million.Looking forward to next weekend, its haul will be expected to be somewhere between Black Panther’s .3 million and The Force Awakens’ .2 million Endgame could be in the realm of 5-823 million. Avatar’s final domestic gross was 0.5 million with a worldwide haul of .78 billion. Avengers: Endgame is now the second-highest grossing film ever with nearly .19 billion. The Force Awakens took 54 days to reach the billion milestone. Infinity War did it in 48 and Avatar in 47. Endgame opened internationally in 25 markets on Apr. 24, 2019 and achieved the goal in just 12 days.ROTTEN RETURNS: DOLLS UGLY INDEED, AND LONG SHOT MISSES BY A MILENormally this section is dedicated to just one movie, but this is a bad weekend for one struggling studio and a wake-up call for another. STX Films had a hit this year with The Upside, though that was a fortunate pickup from its original home at the Weinstein Co. That and Second Act (with Jennifer Lopez) were its only successes since 2017’s A Bad Mom’s Christmas. A million attempt to get into the animated game with Uglydolls (34%) is not going to help when it starts with just .5 million. Sure that’s better than Annapurna/United Artists Releasing got from Missing Link opening weekend but it’s less than Funimation received for Dragon Ball Super: Broly (.8 million) in January this year on just about a third of the screens as Uglydolls. However it is Lionsgate’s release of Long Shot that is far more troubling. At just million this weekend, the Charlize Theron/Seth Rogen romantic comedy is the lowest wide opening for the studio this year. Lionsgate’s successes as of late have been primarily because of their smallest budgets like Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral ( million budget / million gross), A Simple Favor ( million / million), Overboard ( million / .3 million) and Five Feet Apart ( million / .4 million). Compare that to the likes of Hellboy ( million / .7 million), Cold Pursuit ( million / .1 million), Robin Hood ( million / .8 million) and now Long Shot’s million budget.(Photo by Hector Alvarez / © Summit Entertainment)Since the days of Twilight and The Hunger Games, Lionsgate has struggled to find a place in the current state of the franchise wars, unable to even finish their Divergent series. While they have had some major success stories like La La Land and Wonder, decent franchise returns from Now You See Me and John Wick and even a few surprises like The Hitman’s Bodyguard (which is now getting a sequel) and Hacksaw Ridge, the post-Wonder overlook is one where the only + million opening with the Madea Funeral ( million) and their second best was Tyler Perry’s Acrimony (.1 million).Long Shot is the 7th straight non-Tyler Perry entry in the Lionsgate catalog to open wide and fail to to achieve an opening weekend of million. Robin Hood, Hunter Killer, and Hell Fest could not even do it in five days. Lionsgate had so much confidence in Long Shot that they moved it from the first week of June into the wake of Endgame in the hopes of being the Notting Hill to Fox s Phantom Menace, and it backfired spectacularly. Even with an 83% on the Tomatometer and critics praising it as one of the great surprises of 2019, Long Shot could go down as the biggest failure to market a Seth Rogen comedy since the Weinsteins couldn’t turn Zack and Miri Make a Porno into a success just months after Knocked Up grossed over 8 million. Long Shot opened to less than that Kevin Smith film.TOP TEN AND BEYOND: THE INTRUDER FALTERS WITH CRITICS BUT IS WELCOMED BY AUDIENCESThis week’s final newcomer, The Intruder, feels like a minor success compared to those two movies, besting Long Shot for second place with an million opening and all on an million budget. That’s more than Cold Creek Manor opened to in 2003 (.1 million) the film where Stephen Dorff played the previous owner of a house that terrorized Dennis Quaid. That got a 12% from critics here, while The Intruder got a score of 27%. So here’s to minor successes. As for major successes, Captain Marvel has just moved into 24th place for the highest-grossing domestic total of all-time. Shazam! is not nearly in its league, but with over 5 million worldwide, it s still a minor success for the DC Universe. That is more than the 8 million that Dumbo has accumulated to date, which, at the moment, puts the film in the red in the vicinity of Disney’s holiday bomb, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.THIS TIME LAST YEAR: AVENGERS RULED, BUT FELL BEHIND ALL-TIMER PACE(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The weekend prior, Avengers: Infinity War had the largest opening of all-time. This weekend it had the second-best second weekend of all-time with $4.7 million, bringing its total to 3.1 million as it already began to fall well off the pace of The Force Awakens. Counterprogramming was offered with the role-reversal remake of 1987’s Overboard which made .7 million for second place while Jason Reitman’s Tully was another acclaimed disappointment with Charlize Theron that was released in 1,353 theaters and made just .2 million. Also opening in just 34 theaters was RBG, which went on to become one of the most successful documentaries of 2018. The Top Ten films grossed 8.9 million and averaged 60.5% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top Ten grossed 2.4 Million and averaged 59.6% with critics.ON THE VINE: CAN PIKACHU BEAT THE AVENGERS? SERIOUSLY, CAN IT?(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures, @ Legendary)A Pokemon with the voice of Ryan Reynolds is going to try its best to knock back the Avengers in its third weekend. Is Detective Pikachu really going to be a force this summer or has its appeal window shortened as people found new games to play? 1964’s Bedtime Story with Marlon Brando and David Niven is getting another redux; you may know it better as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Caine. This year it is known as The Hustle with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. Last year’s Book Club turned into a little surprise hit for Paramount. This year STX is hoping for the same results with Poms starring Diane Keaton, Jacki Weaver, Rhea Perlman, and Pam Grier in a comedy about a retirement community that starts a cheerleading squad; a film that could have sleeper hit written all over it. But can STX pull it off?The Full Top 10: May 3-5Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – 5.8 million (6.69 million total)The Intruder (2019) 33% – million ( million total)Long Shot (2019) 81% – .02 million (.02 million total)UglyDolls (2019) 28% – .51 million (.51 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .27 million (0.76 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .94 million (.22 million total)The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 28% – .50 million (.10 million total)Shazam! u had?Arkin: The show doesn’t specifically, but I had two great, great acting teachers who I revered. I learned an enormous amount in different directions from both of them. The first guy, who had himself studied with Stanislavski, was named Benjamin Zemach. I studied with him out here in Los Angeles. The second guy was my professor at Bennington. His name was Larry Arrick.(Photo by Netflix)RT: Had you and Michael encountered each other through business circles over the years?Arkin: No, we had never met until about a month before we signed on for the show. I felt if you’re going to be working with somebody for five years it’d be a good idea to sit next to them for half an hour and find out if you happen to like each other, so we had a lunch and it was fine and I signed on. It feels enormously comfortable, flexible, and playful.RT: Was the chemistry immediate from that lunch?Arkin: Yeah, it seemed to be. A little bit tentative for an hour or two, and then slowly loosened up, and it continued to loosen up as the series went on. I feel incredibly trusted by him, and I trust him tremendously.RT: Did you and Michael ever discuss his remake of The In-Laws?Arkin: [Laughs] We have mercifully kept off that subject.RT: Well, I’m glad that question made you laugh. Your character has an emotional breakdown at the dry cleaners in episode three. Was it difficult to perform? How did you get there?Arkin: Oh my God, it was a nightmare, that day. I knew what was coming, and I just had to rev myself and use every ounce of acting training I had to get myself into that place. That and also the speech I gave at the funeral was similar — wrenchingly painful days on what is supposed to be a comedic show. I’m not criticizing it. It goes in a lot of directions, which is one of my favorite things about it. I just hope it doesn’t go in those specific directions very often.RT: In Dumbo you’re playing a brand new character. Tell us about J. Griffin Remington.Arkin: I’m trying to buy the circus. I’m a magnate. I’m interested in this new act and kind of a plutocrat, trying to run everything.RT: Were you able to see any of the Dumbo footage?Arkin: Not a frame. Not a frame, not a photograph.RT: Was that a new experience with visual effects?Arkin: Looking at things that aren’t there? Yeah, pretty much. I haven’t done a lot in the way of fantasy, but It was just looking at an elephant that wasn’t there rather than a person or a car going by.The Kominsky Method premieres Friday, November 16 on Netflix.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now in theaters, and while critics are mostly rolling their eyes at the big guy s latest big screen adventure, many fans are feeling differently. Here s everything we already know about Neo s upcoming return.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Thursday, August 22, 2019Ever since George Lucas ended his original Star Wars story cycle with Return of the Jedi in 1983, the trilogy has been perceived as the most popular way to sequelize a popular film. That is, until someone realizes that a perceived demand is still out there, and then nicely tied-together trilogies lead to movies like Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and most recently, Toy Story 4. The surprise success of The Matrix (Certified Fresh at 88%) in 1999 quickly led to sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (which ended the trilogy on a downtick both critically and at commercially). This week, four years after the disappointment of Jupiter Ascending (Rotten at 27%), Lana Wachowski confirmed that The Matrix 4 is moving forward with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity. Filming is expected to start in early 2020, and already this week, two key creative roles were filled: Wachowski is working with returning concept artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce, which suggests a unity in creature and production design. But in one departure, original trilogy cinematographer Bill Pope will be replaced by John Toll, who won back-to-back Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart (Toll s next film is Harriet). Warner Bros hasn t announced a release date for The Matrix 4 yet, but the filming start date suggests sometime in 2021 or 2022.Other Top Headlines1. BOND 25 OFFICIALLY TITLED NO TIME TO DIE(Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Columbia Pictures)After being called just James Bond 25 since the 2015 release of the 24th film, Spectre, this week we finally learned that the title will be No Time to Die. This makes Daniel Craig s final film as James Bond the fourth movie in the franchise with the word Die or Dies in the title, following Live or Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Die Another Day, breaking the tie with the opposite words (You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, and The Living Daylights). The title also plays as a reference to the news last month that Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch will be playing a new Agent 007 (ostensibly after James Bond retires). MGM has scheduled No Time to Die for release on April 8, 2020, as currently the highest profile film scheduled that month (its closest big competition is Disney s Mulan on March 27, 2020).2. MARGOT ROBBIE S BIRDS OF PREY TO FEATURE JOHN WICK-STYLE ACTION(Photo by Clay Enos / © Warner Bros. )One way that Marvel Studios changed the perception of who could direct action movies was by working with a series of directors whose backgrounds were not in the genre. We re thinking here of comedy director Peyton Reed on the two Ant-Man movies, horror director Scott Derrickson and Doctor Strange, the indie directors of Captain Marvel, and even the Russo brothers, who were best known for directing TV s Community before taking on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Warner Bros. has recently followed suit with Joker (from the director of The Hangover) and Shazam! (from the director of Lights Out). Next year s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2/7/2020) was likewise directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), who we learned this week will be assisted in reshoots of some action sequences by director Chad Stahelski. Before making his directorial debut in 2014 with John Wick (he also directed the sequels), Stahelski worked as stunt and fight coordinator on dozens of movies, including V for Vendetta, The Hunger Games, Speed Racer, and The Wolverine.3. HOBBS AND SHAW VACUUM IN FAST AND FURIOUS 9 TO BE PARTLY REPLACED BY MICHAEL ROOKER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Now that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham s Hobbs and Shaw (Fresh at 67%) characters have successfully been spun off into their own franchise (presumably), they re not expected to be returning in next year s Fast and Furious 9 (5/22/2020). As with many other franchises that have run this long, Universal regularly introduces new characters in each new film, and this week, we learned that the new additions to Fast and Furious 9 will include fan favorite Michael Rooker. (In addition to playing Yondu in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Rooker also co-starred in The Walking Dead.) Although the nature of his role wasn t otherwise specified, Rooker will reportedly play a new character named Buddy. Michael Rooker is the ninth film s second major new cast member following John Cena, who signed on for Fast and Furious 9 in June.4. CHRIS PRATT S NEXT TO BE SCI-FI THRILLER GHOST DRAFT (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)At various points in the last year or so, Chris Pratt was expected to be filming both the (possibly shelved) action movie Cowboy Ninja Viking and Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (not shelved, but it now has to wait for director James Gunn to finish The Suicide Squad). Instead, the next live-action movie (not counting Pixar s Onward) Pratt will star in will probably be the science fiction thriller Ghost Draft. The premise involves a future war that humanity is losing against an alien race, leading to a plan that involves using time travel to recruit soldiers from the past (possibly our present) to fight in the present (our future) time travel is so much fun to explain, isn t it? Chris Pratt s fellow Marvel co-star J.K. Simmons (A.K.A. J. Jonah Jameson) is now in talks to play Pratt s father, while Betty Gilpin (from Netflix s GLOW), Sam Richardson (HBO s Veep), and stand-up comedian Theo Von are also in talks to co-star in Ghost Draft, which will be directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie).5. ROBERT RODRIGUEZ SINGS TO NETFLIX, WE CAN BE HEROES (Photo by Gabriel Olsen/Getty Images)David Bowie s song Heroes didn t even crack the Top 100 in the USA when it was released in 1977, but the song has had a much longer legacy since, including frequent use in movie trailers. Netflix is also now planning a superhero movie called We Can Be Heroes (from the song s chorus), which will be written, produced and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is coming off his recent futuristic action film, Alita: Battle Angel (just this side of Fresh at 60%). The project already has a cast attached including Priyanka Chopra (TV s Quantico), Pedro Pascal (HBO s Game of Thrones), Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang, and Christian Slater. The premise itself involves the children of Earth’s superheroes [after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders] . [who] must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world. 6. TRACY MORGAN JOINS COMING 2 AMERICA(Photo by Ali Paige Goldstein/Paramount)Although other studios continue to pull movies out of December, 2020 release dates (including Disney, who moved Cruella to the summer of 2021 this week), Paramount Pictures is sticking with Coming 2 America, which is now one of only five movies scheduled that month. (The other four are The Croods 2, Dune, West Side Story, and the video game adaptation Uncharted.) The sequel to the 1989 hit comedy Coming to America already had stars both old (Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, and James Earl Jones) and new (Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Wesley Snipes), but a few more names were added this week as well. Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan was the biggest of the new stars announced, as he will be playing the hustler brother of Leslie Jones character, who is the mother of Prince Akeem s son, the result of a one-night-stand. Rotimi (TV s Power) also signed on for a role this week, as did Nomzano Mbatha and Garcelle Beauvais, who is actually reprising one of her first movie roles ever, as a rose petal princess. 7. KERRY WASHINGTON AND STERLING K. BROWN TO PAIR UP AS SHADOW FORCE(Photo by Eli Winston, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)We don t yet know which studio will win the auction, but a new action project called Shadow Force is now attracting bids across Hollywood. Compared to a fresh take on the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie romantic action movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Shadow Force pitch comes with two of TV s most popular stars already attached: Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us). The details pretty much end there, but if we re meant to make direct comparisons to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, then Brown and Washington might be playing contract killers who are both married to each other, and who are hired to kill each other (but that s just a guess).8. LIAM NEESON FOLLOWING UP HIS SNOW PLOW MOVIE WITH THE ICE ROAD(Photo by Maria Marin/©Sony Classics)It might be pure coincidence that these two films share similar themes, but in the same year that Liam Neeson s snow plow driver action movie Cold Pursuit (Fresh at 70%) was released, the Irish star is taking on a new movie that could easily live in the same universe. Neeson is now signed to star in the action adventure The Ice Road as a big rig ice road driver who, after a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners. The Ice Road will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, whose career Tomatometer (mostly as screenwriter) sports nine Rotten scores and just one Fresh one for 2011 s Kill the Irishman. It s not yet known if Cold Pursuit and The Ice Road will be followed by a third cold weather driving movie to complete a thematic trilogy (perhaps about driving a pack of sled dogs?).9. MARVEL AND SONY PARTING WAYS OVER FUTURE SPIDER-MAN MOVIES What Will Happen If Spider-Man Leaves the MCU?What will the MCU look like without Spider-Man? We re breaking down what the Sony/Disney split means for fans.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Wednesday, August 21, 2019If you follow online movie news at all (and by reading this far into this column, we suspect that you do), then you already know that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are parting ways over future plans for Spider-Man movies. Having said that, hopefully we can still give you some details you may not be aware of. First, to elaborate, Kevin Feige will no longer be involved with Sony s plans for Spider-Man movies after Sony reportedly rejected an offer from Disney to share costs (and profits) in a 50/50 deal. Sony then responded with a series of Twitter responses that used words like mischaracterized and disappointed, which may have been a response to criticism from some fans who were quick to side with Disney, Feige, and Marvel Studios. It s worth noting that Sony Pictures was also able to deliver both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse without Feige s help, which might have fueled their resolve. This week s news also came just a few days after Spider-Man: Far from Home became Sony s biggest box office hit ever. As for Tom Holland, he s expected to continue to star as Sony s Spider-Man (his contract still has two movies left, plus he could re-sign), and he s also working with Sony again soon as the star of their video game adaptation Uncharted (12/18/2020). As for Sony s plans, they retain their movie rights to over 900 Spider-Man-related Marvel characters, including Jared Leto s Morbius (7/31/2020), Tom Hardy s Venom 2 (10/2/2020), and other movies in development, like Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat, Silk, Silver Sable, The Sinister Six, and the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.Like this? It s been a while since Mark Ruffalo starred in a non-MCU movie – three years in fact. In his first post-MCU and post-Endgame role, the three-time Oscar nominee plays corporate attorney Robert Bilott in the true-to-life thriller, Dark Waters, which tells the story of the lawyer s investigation and ultimate exposure of a major West Virginia pollution scandal involving mega-corporation DuPont. Directed by Todd Haynes (Carol, Far From Heaven), the movie is Certified Fresh, and critics are praising Ruffalo for his turn as the dogged attorney. In the lead-up to the film s release, Ruffalo sat with us to go deep on how he came to embody real-life hero Bilott, from the time he spent with him on- and off-set to why he felt compelled to tell his story.
