a woman s breast it feels like a bag of sand?’”“I was producing Anchorman, and Steve Carell was just so insanely funny every day, improvising the craziest, most hilarious stuff ever. I walked up to him one day and I said, ‘It seems like you should be the star of a movie. Do you have any ideas?’ And then a couple of days later he walked up to me and told me a couple of ideas. And the last one was: What if I made a movie where I played a 40-year-old virgin? And he said he had worked on a sketch at Second City, where he played a 40-year-old virgin at a poker game, and everyone was talking about sex and telling dirty stories, and it became very clear that he was making his up. And I think that the pitch he had was, ‘You know how when you touch a woman s breast it feels like a bag of sand?’ And oddly, instantly, I understood what he was talking about, and we started writing a movie together. (Photo by @ Universal)“We would always leave time to shoot the script – but then also to really play.” I ve always been a big fan of improvisation ever since I saw Ben Stiller do it when we did the Ben Stiller Show. I definitely encouraged it when Adam McKay was directing Anchorman. With The Forty-Year-Old Virgin, Steve is such a master at it that whatever scene we were doing we would always leave time to shoot the script but then also to really play. And that s how we did the chest-waxing scene. It basically was an extended improvisation. The Scene: Andy Gets His Chest WaxedOne moment, one line really – “Kelly Clarkson!” – remains the most cherished among a series of wonderful moments in this landmark comedy (though the final musical number, a post-coital “Age of Aquarius,” comes close). In this unique makeover scene, Andy (Carell) gets his chest waxed, and in order to capture the moment in its visceral, wince-inducing glory, Apatow simply let his four cameras roll.“Someone came in and said, ‘I act and I wax!’”“We wanted to do some version of a makeover sequence, but we knew that had been done a ton of times. So we were trying to think of original scenes for a makeover montage. Then one day Steve said, ‘What if you waxed me but you did it for real?’ Now at the time, I thought Steve made it up and had never been waxed, but since then I realized that he had been waxed many times in his life and was pretending that he had never been waxed before. I know that by the shape of his chest hair. But at the time, I thought, wow, what a crazy idea. Who ever gets waxed? So we hired a woman who was a professional chest-waxer to do it in the movie. Someone came in and said, ‘I act and I wax!’”(Photo by @ Universal)“We knew that we had to get Steve s real reactions, so we shot it like a documentary.”“I basically set up four cameras and we had some basic beats we wanted to hit. We knew that we had to get Steve s real reactions, so we shot it like a documentary. We wrote out tons of curses, because we did plan the main joke to be that he would just curse right into her face. And we also made lists of words that weren t real curses that sounded like curses. That s how we got to Steve screaming ‘Kelly Clarkson!’ Off to the side, Seth Rogen had made this enormous list of curses, and I would just yell them out to Steve, and each time they ripped the hair off of something he would scream out one of the curses.”“You re supposed to put Vaseline over the nipples, so you don t accidentally rip them off. Apparently that was a step she forgot about.”“The woman who waxed Steve – she may not have been that good at it. I think you re supposed to put Vaseline over the nipples, so you don t accidentally rip them off. And apparently that was a step she forgot about. He was definitely bleeding for real. In fact, we had to CGI out the fact that there was a lot more blood than you see in the movie.”(Photo by @ Universal)“I don t think I ve ever laughed harder than at Jackass movies.”“It is of the Jackass mode of comedy. I don t remember if it came out before or after the craze of pranks and painful violent stunts, things like that. But people always love that. I don t think there s anything funnier than Jackass. I don t think I ve ever laughed harder than at Jackass movies. And I also think it works the same way a horror movie works, which is: you think something s gonna happen, then it finally does, but not at the moment you think it will – and it makes you scream and hide your face. It has a little horror to it as well.”THE IMPACT: A New Kind of Comedy Virgin was a box office success – it’s currently the 16th highest-earning R-rated comedy of all time – but more than that, it reshaped our idea of movie comedies, particularly those with a romantic bent. Gross-out laughs could be followed by moments of genuine sweetness. Romantic leads could be dorkish, a little schlubby, and, at least for much of the film – very hairy. Silliness could be whip-smart. As long as it was all grounded in reality. Apatow would go on to direct landmark comedies like Knocked Up and Trainwreck, and produce the likes of Bridesmaids and HBO’s Girls, all of which bear some of the markings of what made Virgin such a smash: characters you love and moments you will never forget, because they make you cringe, gag, and leave the room, but also make you swoon and cry.“I m sure it seemed very self-involved. But it was why the movie worked.”“A lot of our crew didn t get what we were doing. That was at a time when there weren t a lot of movies that were shot the way we were, with all of this improvisation, and a lot of the crew just seemed annoyed we were doing so many takes. We had a lot of Clint Eastwood s crew, and they were used to doing one or two takes. And we d do tons of takes and tons of improv. I m sure it seemed very self-involved. But it was why the movie worked, because everyone had the ability to experiment.”(Photo by @ Universal)“I hadn t directed a movie before. He hadn t been the lead in a movie before.”“It was a big moment for me and [Steve]. I hadn t directed a movie before. He hadn t been the lead in a movie before. You know, we both weren t sure we knew what we were doing. We had an instinct, we liked the script, we hoped we weren t crazy. But I remember Steve kept saying, ‘I m trying to be nice to our casting director because if this movie bombs I want her to still use me.’ That was some of the energy we had – we re going for a big swing here, and we hope we re right, but we ll see. It was very exciting, and we laughed our asses off the whole time.”“You know, it gave us all our careers.”“I look back at it as sort of a high point in my career. I got to work with so many of my friends – my wife Leslie Mann was so hilarious as Nicky the drunk girl. It was fun that we all had the courage to try something crazy, and it happened to work out. You know, it gave us all our careers.”The 40-Year-Old Virgin was released on August 19, 2005. Buy or rent it at FandangNOW. And with the second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the picture of the post-Blip world is coming more clearly into focus. Governments are destabilized, certain parts of the world experienced a taste of peace while half its population was gone, and, seemingly, the US had a plan for Captain America. The episode also offered a number of introductions which seem to lead the mystery away from Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and toward an unexpected enemy. So let s dive in and glean what we can from the program s latest episode and what a new truth might mean for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).Couples Therapy, and Shipping Sam and Bucky(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)But before we get into the geopolitical aspects, let s give a few moments to Sam and Bucky s (Sebastian Stan) relationship. Yes, it is totally hetero and totally platonic, but it is interesting the way the Captain America strand of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has used film romance dynamics to charge scenes between Steve (Chris Evans) and his partners.Going by a certain reading of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky is very much Steve s ex while Sam is, essentially, the new boyfriend. By utilizing rom-com dynamics, the film created a great shorthand to understand the emotions involved. And once we get to Bucky and Sam sitting in that old Volkswagen in Captain America: Civil War, their rivalry for Steve s friendship proved to be a great source for comedy. That dynamic only grows stronger as events position them into being a couple.Or, at least a couple in terms of the way the Captain America movies engaged with the romance tropes. Dr. Raynor s (Amy Aquino) choice to immediately employ couples therapy tactics on them not only lampshades that aspect of the dynamic, but plays into the characters discomfort with being a de facto couple. Also, it once again proved to be wildly funny as both Mackie and Stan play off of each other in a truly great way. Whether their dynamic is purely Odd Couple or something more just depends on how intensely you ship them. But all their discomfort does lead to one key point about Bucky: he s worried Steve was wrong about his ability to change. Presumably, this will be Bucky s objective for the rest of the season.Sam Learns About The TruthJoel MearesIn 2003, Marvel released a series called The Truth: Red, White Black. Written by Robert Morales with art from Kyle Baker, it told the story of a parallel Super Soldier program conducted on Black servicemen during World War II. Much like the real-life Tuskegee Experiments, it was conducted under false pretenses and without the explicit consent of the men involved. In the Marvel Universe, the experiment led to the deaths of at least 299 men. The one survivor, Isaiah Bradley, wound up with the full benefits of the Super Soldier Serum. Unfortunately, the wider US government was not so accepting of a Black Captain America and Isaiah was sentenced to life in prison after he went AWOL to destroy a Nazi Super Soldier lab. He is later pardoned and released, but exists as a legend known widely to Black Americans, but to few outside that community. And thanks to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he s now a part of the MCU in the form of the great Carl Lumbly. His story has been altered somewhat – he is now a Korean War vet – but we think that context is more powerful for the MCU as the mid-20th Century is something of a blank slate for Marvel to work with. On a purely historical front, it s amazing for any modern series to even acknowledge Korea. And by placing Isaiah s story closer to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the government s disgraceful treatment of him – locking him away for 30 years – becomes just that much starker. At no point during the movement was anyone even aware of Isaiah! Then there s the truth for Sam here: a Black Captain America came into existence in 1951 and only Bucky knew about him. That s a tough fact to process and an indication of what might ve happened had Sam just kept the shield for himself. It is pretty easy to imagine the government burying him (literally) and handing it to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).Considering how easy it was for those Baltimore Police to not recognize the Falcon, the people propping up Walker probably wouldn t have to work too hard to make Sam disappear.Flag Smashers And Power Brokers(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Meanwhile, in Europe, we get a better idea of where the Flag-Smashers are coming from. In the wake of the Blip ending, a Global Repatriation Council was formed to help returning people reestablish their lives. According to Walker and Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett), this includes reactivating Social Security numbers (for US citizens), setting up healthcare options, and more. We also learn some of the people who were displaced now live in camps. But during the five years half the world s population was gone, people like Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) experienced a taste of a world without borders, worries of overpopulation, and (we assume) corporate autocracies besides Stark Industries. Reclaiming that version of the world is her stated fight and it s hard to argue with all her points. Some, though, are easier to combat as they sound eerily reminiscent of Thanos s grim calculus. How does one reclaim a world of only 3 billion people except by killing 3 billion undesirables ? That thinking can only lead to something awful. At the same time, the sense of community she seemingly clings to can be scaled to include the returnees – unless, of course, she believes all the world leaders who also returned would object to that. That ambiguity is baked into the character, of course, as she is partially based on Marvel Comics Flag-Smasher, Karl Morgenthau, a Swiss anti-nationalist who came into conflict with Captain America, The Punisher, and even the Red Skull. Though his intentions of a world without nationalistic superiority were noble, his preferred method to further his goal, terrorism, indicated a flaw in his thinking. Cap even told him as much. For the moment, we re going to assume Karli shares this flaw. But that s presuming her stated goal is true. Perhaps the Flag Smashers are just ruse. Her apparent association with Power Broker indicates a much more fluid morality. As the name implies, the Power Broker is a person of means who offers super abilities and assets for personal gain. Curiously, the first version of the character was introduced as a satire of the health and fitness craze emerging in the late 1970s. Some of his schemes revolved around a wrestling promotion for super-powered people. He also ran afoul of John Walker and Lemar Hoskins. But perhaps the most intriguing thing about the Power Broker is his long association with Dr. Karl Malus, a mad scientist interested in the creation and application of superpowers. Is it possible they are the source of the Super Soldier Serum powering the Flag Smashers?Malus previously appeared in the second season of Jessica Jones in the form of Callum Keith Rennie. There, he was one of the IGH scientists involved in the creation of Jessica s (Krysten Ritter) powers and her mother Alisa s (Janet McTeer) more problematic life. Malus presumably committed suicide when he blew up his lab, but as it is still unclear if the events of that series really happened in the MCU, the character could be in play. Or, at the very least, he could have perfected a stable serum variant for the Power Broker before his death.Well, presuming the Power Broker is the source of the serum Karli s using and the person hounding her via text messages. The story seems to be tying these things together, but it is possible they are separate things.Meanwhile, as Bucky notes, the arrival of a stable of Super Soldiers is a definite problem. If Karli got her hands on the serum, is there more out there? If it is in the hands of the Power Broker – for the moment, we re going to assume the series is using the nameless version of the character instead of Curtiss Jackson – they could unleash a terrible force on the world.Or a terrible force for Zemo to control. But we ll consider him more next week.Of Battlestars And U.S. Agents(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)As mentioned above, the episode also introduced Lemar Hoskins – aka Battlestar. The character has an interesting behind-the-scenes history which is relevant to the show s running themes. In preparation for John Walker to become Captain America in the comics in 1987, writer Mark Gruenwald decided he needed a Bucky of his own. Already established as a member of the Bold Urban Commandos (BUCs for short), he chose Lemar to become the fifth Bucky and appeared as such for a short while. Eventually, writer Dwayne McDuffie explained to him Buck is a derogatory term for African Americans originating from the days of slavery. The two agreed to rename him Battlestar and a story developed for Lemar to highlight the problem and switch to the new persona. The story also firmly established Lemar as Walker s partner instead of a sidekick.Considering the way The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has highlighted the treatment of Black superheroes thus far, we expect some of Battlestar s history will come into play across the remainder of the season. At the moment, he seems pretty happy to be part of the counterfeit Team Cap, but it is easy to imagine his status could change soon. In the moments we have with him so far, it is unclear if he is Walker s partner or sidekick. Clarifying that role will be key.Of course, some of that depends on what sort of man John Walker turns out to be. For the moment, he seems forthright, but that slight suggestion of territoriality in his last moments with Sam indicates he may not be as noble as Steve. Then again, has any man ever been as noble as Steve? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.On an Apple device? we got the one where it was like, ‘It actually looks like it s going to hit million.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ By the time it went up to 26 we all just went like, ‘We got to get to the theater.’ So we all four of us just jumped in the car and drove to the ArcLight in Hollywood and ran in and found a packed theater just absolutely rocking with laughter. That was the moment you just go like, ‘Oh thank God.’ Mumolo and Wiig at the 2012 Academy Awards (Photo by Matt Brown/ABC via Getty Images) If you are to be nominated for an Oscar tomorrow, what number should we call you at?’ Mumolo:  They give you a phone call the night before and they say, ‘If you are to be nominated for an Oscar tomorrow, what number should we call you at?’ You give them your number. You re like, ‘Haha that s really funny, that s hilarious, OK, good night.’ I think I felt as though, maybe intentionally, psychologically, I couldn t wrap my head around that. So something just shut off and I went to bed. And then they called. My husband was in the other room and he started [screaming], ‘Hey look! Get up!’ And so that s how I found out. “The industry was going to wait and see how we did at the box office before they could even consider green-lighting other movies starring women.”Feig: The biggest thing that changed is that the studios saw they can make money off of female-driven comedies. Hollywood is not an altruistic town. We are, as far as our politics and all that, but when it comes to the business, money talks, and you can pitch people all day that they should do a movie because it s the right thing to do and we need representation and we need this and that, but if it doesn t make money, then they don t care, basically. That was the thing that was kind of held over our head the whole [time] through production and even up until the day we got it released. It was looked at as being this sort of oddity, this risky thing that we were doing. The whole industry was going to have to wait and see how we did at the box office before they could even consider development and green-lighting other movies starring women. Which was crazy. So much pressure was on it that if it didn t do well, the town was going to go, ‘Well, see, movies starring women don t work.’ Which is insane, because nobody ever says that when a movie starring a bunch of men doesn t do well. They just go, ‘OK, the movie didn t work.’ I had female friends who were writers who had pitched ideas, and they were being told around town, We have to wait and see how Bridesmaids does. ”The reviews were raves and the marketers leant into the idea of a smart, R-rated female-led comedy (Photo by @ Universal Pictures)“It s like birthing a baby. And it went on for such a long time.”Mumolo:  The movie for all of us in the beginning was like having a baby. It s like birthing a baby. And it went on for such a long time. And there are wonderful, joyful moments. There are moments of despair, there are moments of anxiety, there are moments of relief. I mean it’s such a tremendous experience. There were so many things that changed me as a person. When it comes to that one scene, it was a blip in a six-year experience. But I m very grateful that it makes people laugh. And that s what we set out to do. That part of it makes me happy. 6.83.1 1月喜迎While sports fans can debate the results of last night s Big Game, fans of Marvel Studios (and sports fans who like Marvel movies) took note of an ad for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which aired shortly after kickoff. The tone was serious as it offered some new glimpses of an Earth after half its population disappeared into dust. But it also suggested a call to action for those with enhanced abilities to upend the new status quo. And as it featured substantial new footage from the movie, let s take a look at some of the things we learned from the 30-second television ad.The Survivor Support Group Supports A Time Jump(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the opening moments, we see a changed New York and an empty stadium to reinforce the monumental loss of life in Avengers: Infinity War. In voice over, we re told some have moved on. The scene cuts to a support group for survivors of the catastrophe Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) among them. All of which supports earlier reports that Endgame would take place some time after the Snap at the end of Infinity War. The length of that time jump is still up for debate with the earliest reports suggesting a real-time gap of roughly a year while others suggest Endgame will pick up several years after Infinity War. Either way, we re definitely getting a Leftovers vibe from the support group.Rocket Is An Avenger(Photo by Marvel Studios)We ll get to Rocket s big moment in the ad later. First, let s take a look at moment late in the spot when Steve s voiceover tells us the Avengers have not moved on. The dialogue is presented alongside a slow motion walk of the remaining Avengers. Rocket is among the group as they Well, let s assume they re on their way to deal with Thanos (Josh Brolin). The earlier Endgame teaser echoed a moment from Marvel Comics  The Infinity Gauntlet storyline in which the Avengers track Thanos down and find his armor propped up as a scarecrow. Its pretty clear elements of The Infinity Gauntlet will inform Endgame the way Thanos s Snap anchored Infinity War.Alternatively, the slow-motion walk may appear early in the film as the silhouettes of both War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) who are featured in a moment of their own appear to be missing. As some astute viewers pointed out, there is also the possibility that an unidentified character was mysteriously edited out of some of the footage in the trailer, including the slow-motion walk.Thor Is Spaceworthy(Photo by Marvel Studios)Our key glimpse of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the ad sees him looking out at a lush, green environment. It resembles the place Thanos viewed in Infinity War s closing moments, further suggesting the Avengers will take the battle back to the Mad Titan. There is also the possibility that Thor is looking out across Wakanda, judging from the landscape, but it s difficult to tell. Considering Thor s new weapon Stormbringer can conjure up the Bifrost or a Bifrost like means of interstellar travel we re going to assume he s been using it to search for Thanos and survivors of Infinity War s space team. But what ship is he on in the ad?The Benatar Survives?(Photo by Marvel Studios)In one of the more curious glimpses in the 30-second spot, Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) appear to be repairing the Benatar the now-abandoned Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship. This could be a moment from their initial departure from Titan or a flashback to happier times, as the first Endgame trailer revealed a lonely, distraught Tony recording a final message to Pepper Potts. But it could also be a moment from later in the film when the Avengers are reunited and use the Benatar to carry the whole team to Thanos. Well, presuming that s the ship on which we see Thor a few moments later in the ad.Consider the moment when Earthbound Avengers Steve Rogers, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Rhodey, and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) walk out of their headquarters and look up at something just out of frame. It could be Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), of course, but perhaps she brought the Benatar (and Thor) with her.Rocket Is First Through The Door(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rocket s key moment in the ad sees him bursting through the door of a seemingly simple shack near an unidentified coastline. This could easily be the shack Thanos built for himself on his retirement world, but it could also be something on Earth. The prominence of the seaside and fishing nets in the background to say nothing of the very Earth-like latch on the door suggest more familiar terrain, but perhaps Thanos always wanted a quiet life by the sea. Then again, maybe Rocket turned to fishing during his time on Earth and it s his seaside shack.Yeah, that doesn t seem likely, considering the guns strapped to his sides.Clint Barton Is Hawkeye Again?Ryan FujitaniThe earlier Endgame trailer prominently featured a sword-weilding Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in an apparent switch of persona to Ronin an identity his comic book counterpart adopted for a time. But in his Big Game Ad appearance, Clint appears to have a pair of quivers strapped to his back. It is fairly safe to assume Black Widow finds him working as Ronin and convinces him to come back to the Avengers, restoring his costumed persona and key gimmick in the process. After all, what would an Avengers movie (besides Infinity War) be without Hawkeye?Steve Rogers Has His Shield Back(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the lead-up to Infinity War, reports suggested Steve would take on the identity of Nomad, another Steve Rogers alias from the comics. This turned out to be more of a thematic idea than a literal one, as Steve was in fact roaming, but his costume turned out to be a very weathered version of the one he wore in Captain America: Civil War. That said, Steve lacked a proper shield throughout Infinity War, continuing an idea from Civil War about Steve s loss of identity. But as seen in the trailer, Steve has his shield back. Since Endgame is the presumed last stand of Captain America, it makes sense that he would be visually restored to his former self. It happens in the comics all the time, so a moment like that should occur in a movie like Endgame.Avengers: Endgame opens everywhere on April 26.

bobapp体育下载安装 Every year, the annual Arrowverse crossover is a chance for the various CW superhero shows to stretch themselves with comedy, action, and special effects spectacles. This year’s story saw The Book of Destiny rewrite the lives of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), causing the Flash and Arrow to swap each other’s lives. Roping in Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and her cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to aid their attempt to undo the Book’s alterations gave each show — The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl — plenty of opportunities to redefine how far they can push the limits of superhero television. But it was also a chance for the participating programs to get very geeky about themselves and comic-book mythology overall. This year’s crossover, “Elseworlds,” is no exception, with nods to previous crossovers, a future crossover, and deep pulls from comic-book lore. Here’s a look some of our favorite references and what they mean for the Arrowverse.“Barry, What Have You Done This Time?”(Photo by Jack Rowand/The CW)Almost as soon as the first part of “Elseworlds” began, it made the same joke about Barry s disregard for the timeline that the internet does. When Oliver realized he was the Flash, he immediately asked the most sensible question anyone would in that situation: What the heck did Barry do now?The joke goes back to the resolution of the “Flashpoint” storyline in the third season of The Flash. Barry prevented his mother’s murder, but also prevented the circumstances that led to him becoming the Flash. When he undid this choice, it had ramifications for The Flash, like the appearance of Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker), and Arrow. In the latter program’s case, his cavalier attitude toward time changed John Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla Michaels’ (Audrey Marie Anderson) daughter, Sara, into J.J., their son. The change was even predicted in the first season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow when the Legends discovered J.J. acting as the Green Arrow in 2046.As it happens, no one was thrilled to learn about Barry s tinkering with time. His “Flashpoint” mistake led to a favorite online meme about disappointing events. And considering how often Arrow tries to resist the wilder Arrowverse plot points, Oliver’s question seems like a great joke and a fair point. The Salmon LadderA regular feature of Arrow’s early years, Oliver’s main means of working out his core has taken a back seat in recent years. Luckily, the equipment was still set up in the remains of the Arrowcave, allowing Barry to try it out as he seemingly inherited Oliver’s abs during the life-swap.“The Pipeline Is a Prison”For years, fans of The Flash have debated the morality of the Pipeline. Set up as a way to contain wayward metas like Girder (Greg Finley), viewers quickly began to question how the Pipeline functioned and Team Flash s cavalier attitude toward the metas constitutional rights. Though prisoners in the Pipeline were eventually transferred to Iron Heights Prison, the show never really acknowledged what the Pipeline was until Barry pieced it together in the first part of “Elseworlds.”Like much of the humor in the first episode, the moment revealed that the producers of The Flash do listen to those complaints, even if it takes them four years to respond. But the underlying theme of the joke was amplified in Part 3 as John Deegan (Jeremy Davies) turned S.T.A.R. Labs into a literal prison. Also, the sequence from Part 1 finally resolved a longstanding concern about the humane treatment of the metas in the Pipeline: Yes, the cells do indeed have toilets. The Smallville Theme(Photo by Shane Harvey/The CW)While not part of the Arrowverse, Smallville was The CW’s (and The WB’s) first foray into the DC Universe. Using the theme song as the action moves to the Earth-38 Kent Farm — which happens to be the same location used on Smallville — was a nice, playful touch. This is a particularly deep pull from the DC Comics mythos as the Jewel Mountains of Lurvan appear in only a handful of early 1980s comic books. In the mountains second appearance, Kryptonian criminal Jax-Ur traveled back in time to create a Jewel Kryptonite as a means of affecting reality outside the Phantom Zone. Now that sounds like a future Supergirl story to us. A Friend (Photo by Katie Yu/The CW)When Clark agrees to help Oliver and Barry, he announces himself as “a friend.” The line will be familiar to fans of 1978’s Superman motion picture — which happens to be celebrating its 40th anniversary later this week — as Clark’s (Christopher Reeve) answer when Lois (Margot Kidder) asks “Who are you?” after he saved her from a helicopter accident. It is the first of many nods to the Earth-38 Superman’s feature-film counterpart. In Part 3, Barry and Kara’s scientifically unsound plan to slow the rotation of the Earth and slow down time is a direct lift from the end of Superman; though, in that case, Superman was seen reversing the rotation of the Earth to turn back time. The visual is recreated in “Elseworlds,” but as many have noted over the years, reversing the rotation of the planet would not alter time. Instead, it would break the Earth’s gravitational pull. Nonetheless, the visual is very consistent with the way Superman traveled through time in issues of Action Comics and Superman during the 1950s and 60s.Another nod to Superman comes at the tail end of “Elseworlds” when Clark proposes to Lois. The dress she is wearing is a duplicate of the one movie Lois wears during her first interview with the Man of Steel. Feature-film Superman was also known to use his strength to make diamonds, which is seen here with the engagement ring he gives Lois. Even his attempt to grill and Lois’s subsequent suggestion to use heat vision is a roundabout reference to a deleted Superman II scene in which Clark uses that ability to make a soufflé.The Batman Is an Urban LegendWhen Barry, Kara, and Oliver finally decide to make a trip to Earth-1’s Gotham City in Part 2, Oliver boldly claims the Batman is a urban legend. This is a joke with many meanings. In the comics of the 1990s, Batman was considered to be an urban legend despite his membership in the Justice League. The notion was dispensed during the 1999 “No Man’s Land” storyline, in which Batman was forced to appear in broad daylight to reclaim his city and partner with the Gotham City Police Department. The concept, however, serves well as a joke about who appeared first in the Arrowverse. Until “Elseworlds,” Oliver was presumed to be the first costumed vigilante — for a moment, let’s dismiss the Justice Society of America in the 1940s — which would be true if the Batman is a myth. You may notice Ollie gets really defensive about this point, which is another nod to the comics as Green Arrow was something of a Batman clone for decades. But the joke also has a real-world connotation as Batman remains a character the Arrowverse cannot use for obscure corporate reasons predating the Warner Bros. purchase of DC Comics and the character s continued status as feature film star.Despite the prohibition on the character himself, the entire Gotham City sequence in Part 2 is stuffed with weighty Batman references. The Chicago exterior shots recall Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. The overgrown vegetation in the Wayne Tower and the glimpse of Kate Kane’s (Ruby Rose) hideout is a direct reference to the treehouse her comic-book counterpart, Batwoman (who will likely be getting her own series in 2019), utilizes. The names glimpsed at Arkham Asylum are, of course, members of Batman’s rogues gallery — although executive producer Marc Guggenheim clearly had some fun by making the caped crusader s Earth-1 counterpart an inmate there — and back in Bruce Wayne’s office, the Shakespeare bust is a welcome tip-of-the-hat to Batman ’66.Also, Batwoman’s suggestion that she and Kara could be the “world’s finest” team recalls the comic book of the same name, in which Batman and Superman regularly teamed up.John Diggle s Ring(Photo by Diyah Pera/The CW)When the Earth-90 Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) finally makes it to Earth-1, he spots Diggle and asks why he is not wearing his ring. The joke is a reference to the fan theory (or is it an abandoned storyline?) that Diggle is really John Stewart, who became Hal Jordan’s back-up as Green Lantern in 1971’s Green Lantern #87. Fans of the Justice League animated series will also remember him as the Green Lantern of Earth.Arrow has made plenty of knowing references over the years to the Diggle-Stewart connection as their histories align in certain ways, but it is unlikely the producers ever really intended to make Dig the protector of space sector 2814. For one thing, the show is the most grounded of the Arrowverse programs, so it seems unlikely that a ring would ever come to Earth and judge him to be a man without fear. Additionally, it was always presumed Warner Bros. Pictures interest in Green Lantern feature films made it impossible for the Arrowverse to feature a Green Lantern Corps, although executive producer Beth Schwartz recently suggested this may not be the case.Either way, it is fun to think that in other realities, John Diggle is a space cop. Maybe once Arrow finishes its run, producers could spin him off into his own Green Lantern series.“Worlds Live. Worlds Die”(Photo by Jack Rowand/The CW)In the end, “Elseworlds” proved to be a test for the coming Crisis, as the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) eventually explained; in fact, we already know the Arrowverse plans to bring Crisis on Infinite Earths to television next year. The epic 1985 maxiseries redefined DC Comics continuity by ending its Multiverse (don’t worry, it eventually returned). In the series, the Monitor assembled heroes from various realities to stop the approach of the Anti-Monitor from the antimatter reality: a creature bent on harvesting the energies of the other realities. In the end, the heroes were forced to merge the remaining realities into a single, supposedly cohesive, universe. And as ads for the series remarked, worlds lived and worlds died. The death count included the entire Crime Syndicate of America on Earth-3, Hank Hall’s brother Don (a.k.a. Dove), and, most notably, Barry Allen and Kara Zor-El.Since “Elseworlds” proved to be a prequel to “Crisis,” references to the storyline proliferate across the story with Crisis’ red skies following Barry and Ollie from Central City to Star City, the Monitor’s
