亚博在线登录网页版采用百度引擎7(Baidu 7)(Photo by Bob Mahoney/2018 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Matt Bomer has piercing blue eyes, a chiseled jaw, and a Hollywood-approved all-American look. But on DC Universe’s Doom Patrol, his character, Larry Trainor (a.k.a. Negative Man) is covered head-to-toe with bandages thanks to an accident that has left him radioactive. The character is also possessed by a negative that occasionally leaves his body and wreaks havoc on his life (and can fly and pass through solid objects to boot). The dual nature of Negative Man is enhanced even further by the fact that he’s played in bandaged form by actor Matthew Zuk (and voiced by Bomer), and in flashback form by Bomer himself. It’s an essential character trait, Bomer explained to a small group of reporters following a screening of a recent Doom Patrol episode.“He s a guy who is this golden boy on the outside but inside has always felt like a monster. The great allegory of the role that Jeremy [Carver, showrunner] so brilliantly came up with is that ultimately through this accident, he becomes what he always felt he was inside. And so his journey over the course of the season is finding a dialogue with himself where he can learn to accept all the parts of himself that he felt were, on the whole, not acceptable in the past.”That includes Larry’s new backstory: He was an Air Force pilot (similar to the character’s introduction in the comics) and, as shown in the third episode, “Puppet Patrol,” married with two kids — but having an affair with one of his air force buddies (not in the comics).(Photo by Bob Mahoney/2018 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)“A big reason why I wanted to be a part of Doom Patrol is because I ve never really seen a gay male superhero,” Bomer said. “What I love most about the character is that even though it s a huge struggle internally for him, it s not the sole thing that defines who he is. It s such a multi-faceted character. If it had just been one stereotypical thing, I think I would have had more reservations about it, but the fact that he is this nuanced character who has so many places to grow and he has so much shadow and so much light that he doesn t even know, that s what appealed to me just as much as his sexuality.”But while Larry’s sexuality does not define him, the fact that he’s living a dual life is intrinsic to the character.“He really compartmentalized it. He really wanted his cake and to eat it too. It s really profoundly important for him to be able to keep his wife and family not only because of the primal love and need for them, but also because they secure his status in his place in the military,” he said. “But he also obviously really, really loves John — maybe the only true romantic connection he s ever had. So he wants it both.”Of course, that’s not a realization Larry could come to during his time — it’s something he’s realized during his 50 years with Chief (Timothy Dalton) and Rita Farr (April Bowlby) in Doom Manor, time he’s filled with new hobbies like gardening. He’s been able to conveniently ignore his underlying issues until the events that happen in Doom Patrol’s pilot really force him to deal with them. That self-exploration “just continues to grow over the course of the season,” Bomer explained, and will come to a head soon. “Episode 10 and 11 is where it all really starts to come to a head for him and he really starts to get in touch with who he is authentically.”Larry’s journey over the course of the season has included him “finding his voice and being able to come to terms with his sexuality, who he is, how he can help, what this being inside him is, what it represents, how it wants to communicate with him, why it wants to communicate with him. Does he want it to stick around? Does he want it to leave? Can he ever have any real control over it? Is the only way to have control over that is to ultimately, for the first time in his life, let go of control because he has been such a control freak? He s really face-to-face with his ego and all the fears and insecurities that that entails, and he has to let go and in order to supersede that and really find a purpose for his existence after all these years.”The season has also seen plenty of elements pulled from Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol run, Bomer noted, along with original creations from Carver. Episodes have explored what happened to Larry during the time between the accident that left him radioactive and when he arrived at Doom Manor.“It s just so wildly imaginative,” Bomer raved. “I just want people to see the show because I truly think — and I don t say this about every show I ve done — it s really special. And it s got an incredible creative team, an incredible production team. I think ultimately, as bizarre and wacko as it gets at times, it s got an incredible heart underneath it all and they ve really gone to painstaking links to make these characters really human and to have real darkness and light and struggle to get to where they are when we find them and where they re going to be by the end of the season.”New episodes of Doom Patrol are released every Friday on DC Universe.

In 2011, Mexican director Gerardo Naranjo released a thriller based on true events called Miss Bala about an aspiring beauty queen who is swept into the criminal underworld, and while it was a hit with critics (Certified Fresh at 87%), it didn t quite sear itself into the pop culture consciousness at the time. That said, Hollywood saw fit to remake the film for English-speaking audiences with Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez in the lead, and the result is this week s Miss Bala. The new film takes a few extra liberties with the story, as Rodriguez s Gloria is a U.S. citizen whose close friend s disappearance prompts a frantic search that leads to her being kidnapped by a drug cartel and forced to act as an unwilling mule. Critics say the new interpretation is a far cry from its predecessor that heavily sanitizes its story for a PG-13 rating and suffers from bland action and predictable story beats. Gina Rodriguez does her best in the role and showcases her potential to be a bigger movie star, but the rest of the film may be a disappointment for anyone looking for something weightier.

2. 公平游戏环境
Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, and Michael B. Jordan. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS PRATT SAYS GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3 STILL IN THE WORKS (Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an excellent example of why news about film development can be so interesting to follow. Until last summer, the 3 million global take for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 seemed to make the third installment a shoo-in for Marvel, with many speculating it would take a scheduled May 1, 2020 release date. That, however, went all topsy-turvy in July when Disney fired director James Gunn over controversial Twitter jokes from before he was first hired for Guardians of the Galaxy. Since then, Gunn has switched teams, landing the job for Warner Bros./DC Comics reboot of Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. The Guardians cast were supportive of Gunn, with Dave Bautista (Drax) the most vocal about at least keeping Gunn s screenplay. This week, Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) spoke up on the subject, confirming that Marvel and Disney are still moving forward with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 using Gunn s screenplay. Marvel now just has to find a new director, but one option, fan favorite Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), has already said he won t take the job, saying, it feels kind of awkward. Other projects Marvel is developing for 2020 and beyond include Black Panther 2, Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2, The Eternals, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.Fresh Developments1. ANYA TAYLOR-JOY JOINS EDGAR WRIGHT S HORROR FILM LAST NIGHT IN SOHO(Photo by Linda Kallerus/Netflix)Although one of his most famous movies (Shaun of the Dead, Certified Fresh at 92%) was a zombie movie, it was also a comedy, so writer/director Edgar Wright has never technically made a true horror film. Although it s sometimes being labeled as a thriller (or horror-thriller), that may be changing with Wright s next film, which we learned this week is called Last Night in Soho. We don t yet know what the London-set film, written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (TV s Penny Dreadful), is actually about, but we now know who will play the female lead (or one of the leads). That job is going to British-Argentine actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who first came to fame in The Witch and subsequently worked twice with M. Night Shymalan in the recent thrillers Split and Glass. Taylor-Joy also has the X-Men spinoff The New Mutants, in which she stars as popular character Magik, coming soon (8/2/2019).2. TOM HANKS MAY REUNITE WITH CAPTAIN PHILLIPS DIRECTOR TO TELL NEWS OF THE WORLD (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Walt Disney Studios)The films of director Paul Greengrass frequently earn Certified Fresh Tomatometer scores, but you have to go to #4 on his box office results to find a movie without the word Bourne in the title. That movie, which earned 8 million globally from a budget of million, was 2013 s Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. For his next film, Greengrass is developing an adaptation of the award-winning 2016 novel News of the World, and he is now talking to Tom Hanks about reuniting for the film as their second project together. Paulette Jiles novel tells the story of a former Civil War officer in 1870 who travels across Texas reading newspaper stories to illiterate children, and who is then asked to escort a captured Native American child to her relatives. Hanks recently wrapped his role as Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, is preparing for the science fiction movie BIOS, and also has Toy Story 4 (6/21/2019) and Greyhound (5/8/2020) coming soon.3. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 and 8 LAND OFFICIAL RELEASE DATES(Photo by David James/Paramount Pictures)A few weeks ago, we reported that Paramount Pictures, director Christopher McQuarrie, and star Tom Cruise were moving forward with plans to produce Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 back to back for release in 2021 and 2022. We now have a better idea of what Paramount is aiming for (and confirmation that they re serious about this), as the two sequels are scheduled for July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022, respectively. Studios do typically schedule their biggest films far in advance, but right now, Mission: Impossible 7 is relatively unchallenged in 2021, with Indiana Jones 5 scheduled for two weeks earlier and The Suicide Squad scheduled two weeks later. The closest competition for Mission: Impossible 8 right now is an untitled Marvel Studios project on July 29, 2022. There are no details yet as to where the Mission: Impossible franchise might go after 2022, but Tom Cruise will turn 60 that year, so Mission: Impossible 8 might be his last opportunity to jump out of airplaines and hang from the sides of skyscrapers.4. IDRIS ELBA SIGNS FOR UNDERWATER ADVENTURE DEEPER (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Last week, we got our first good glimpse of the spinoff Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (8/2/2019), showing off Idris Elba as the superpowered bad guy Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will be taking on. We may never get to see Elba take over as James Bond, but new roles for him continue to roll in. Elba is now in talks with MGM to star in the supernatural/science fiction underwater thriller Deeper, to be directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Adrift, Everest, 2 Guns), whose regular delivery of Fresh movies is balanced here by a screenplay by Max Landis, whose Tomatometer looks quite different by comparison. In Deeper, Elba will play a disgraced astronaut who is on a deep-sea dive exploring a newly discovered trench but soon finds himself confronted by a sinister and dangerous force. Gal Gadot and Bradley Cooper (presumably in Elba s role) were previously attached to star in Deeper, but it s not yet known if Gadot is still on board or if another actress will be cast in her role.5. MICHAEL B. JORDAN S TOM CLANCY MOVIE WITHOUT REMORSE SCHEDULED FOR 2020(Photo by Marvel Studios)Now that Tom Clancy s Jack Ryan is a TV series on Amazon, it looks like Paramount s long obsession with trying to reboot the character as a movie franchise is finally over (for now). Instead, the studio is turning toward another Tom Clancy character, John Clark, starting with an adaptation of Clancy s novel Without Remorse. Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan will star in Without Remorse as John Clark, taking over previous portrayals by Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber. Paramount has also scheduled Without Remorse for release on September 18, 2020 (up against the animated sequel The Croods 2). Michael B. Jordan s production company is also now developing an adaptation of the African fantasy novel Black Leopard Red Wolf.  In related news, the video game adaptation Monster Hunter (starring Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa) is also now scheduled for September, 2020 (September 4, specifically).6. KINGSMAN PREQUEL ATTRACTS KICK-ASS AND WATCHMEN STARS(Photo by Daniel Smith/Lionsgate, Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Instead of proceeding with a proper third Kingsman installment starring Taron Egerton, et al, director Matthew Vaughn has instead begun production on a Kingsman prequel, which may or may not be called Kingsman: The Great Game. British rising star Harris Dickinson will star in the spy movie as  a cocky yet charming young [pilot] who’s eager to serve his country and fight in World War I. We ve known for a while that Dickinson will be supported by an impressive ensemble that includes Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War), Rhys Ifans, Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones). This week, the ensemble cast grew even larger with the additions of Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Godzilla, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Nocturnal Animals), Gemma Arterton, Tom Hollander, and Matthew Goode (Ozymandias in Watchmen). This is a reunion project for Taylor-Johnson and Vaughn, as the former starred in the latter s Kick-Ass (also adapted from a comic book by Kingsman creator Mark Millar). 20th Century Fox has already scheduled the Kingsman prequel for release later this year, on November 8, 2019 (against Sonic the Hedgehog and Stephen King s Shining sequel Doctor Sleep).Rotten Ideas3. LONG-IN-DEVELOPMENT ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK REMAKE STILL A POSSIBILITYRemakes are still very much a prolific phenomenon, particularly evident this week, when we saw new trailers for both Pet Sematary (4/5/2019) and Child s Play (6/21/2019). The thing is, the argument is out there that some movies, especially very good ones, shouldn t be remade at all. One of director John Carpenter s best films was a remake, and a few of his own movies have been remade, and remade, and remade. Currently, Dwayne Johnson is even developing a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, and there s been talk of a They Live remake as well. One of the John Carpenter remake projects that s been around the longest (about 10 years or so) is a new take on 1981 s Escape from New York (Certified Fresh at 86%), with Gerard Butler at one point nearly taking over Kurt Russell s role as Snake Plissken. The latest writer/director to come on board is Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, Certified Fresh at 87%), just a week after Whannell also started work on a remake of The Invisible Man.2. FOX PUTTING X-MEN MOVIES ON HOLD UNTIL MARVEL TAKES OVER (Photo by Murray Close/20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Super obviously, not all news stories are clear cut Fresh or Rotten. Let s look, for example, at Fox s recent Marvel movies. While, yes, both X-Men: Apocalypse and Fantastic Four failed to resonate with critics, Fox also gave us some pretty great films like Deadpool and Logan. Two months ago, we learned that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will be overseeing Fox s Marvel Comics movies as the studio merges with Disney, which is great news for X-Men and Fantastic Four fans who want to see those heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The bad news we learned this week is that we might have to wait a while, as Fox has put a hold on making any more Marvel films after X-Men: Dark Phoenix (6/7/2019) and The New Mutants (8/2/2019). That means if you were eagerly awaiting movies like Gambit, X-Force, X-23, or Deadpool 3, you may not want to hold your breath. In related news, however, this week we also heard that when Deadpool does come back under Disney, he will still be R-rated, and the studio isn t necessarily saying no to other future R-rated Marvel Comics movies either.1. WORLD WAR Z SEQUEL IS FINALLY SCRAPPED (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Paramount Pictures)Speaking of movies that are being delayed, if you were a big fan of Brad Pitt and director David Fincher s zombie movie World War Z, we ve got some bad news. After years of almost-starts and delays (sometimes while Fincher worked on other projects), Paramount Pictures has finally, apparently definitively, pulled the plug on a World War Z sequel. Pre-production was reportedly already well underway for a six-month shoot in Atlanta and other nations around the world, but that also meant the budget exploded to over 0 million, and that was the breaking point for Paramount. Technically, it sounds like World War Z could come back in the future, but if it does, it would be with a much lower budget, without David Fincher directing, and possibly without Brad Pitt as well. Brad Pitt will next be seen in the science fiction film Ad Astra (5/24/2019) and Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (7/26/2019).

Manuel Betancourt for Rotten Tomatoes: How did Bad Trip begin?Eric Andre: Well it s been seven and a half years since we first started talking about it. October 2013 is when Bad Grandpa came out. I was on season two of The Eric Andre Show and my agent called me up and he goes, Hey man, you re going to go see Bad Grandpa this weekend? I was like, Hell yeah. And he goes, Dude, I think it s gonna make like 100 million bucks. It s, like, testing through the roof. And then he was like, You should make one of those movies. Still to this day, I don t know how to write a movie. All I know are jokes and pranks. I m a joke writer, not a story writer. I didn t know the importance of story. So we were throwing spaghetti at the wall for years, developing the idea and building it up and bringing it down and building it up. It was like we went to film school without going. We just had to educate ourselves on how to read a story, and then we teamed up with [Bad Grandpa’s director] Jeff Tremaine, and then we just kept cracking away at it. But it was an ongoing process until the very end of editing, and we finished editing the movie 2019. So it was a long and winding road.RT: What was the most terrifying scene to shoot? I was terrified for you during so many of them.Andre: Yeah, I mean we shot a lot in Georgia and it s an open carry state so…There s a scene where Rel and I, we have our penises stuck in a Chinese finger trap — you know, as it s known to happen. And we went into a really hood barber shop in Atlanta and this dude took out a knife and chased us, trying to kill us. That was Rel’s not only day one of filming the movie, but the first hidden camera prank he ever filmed.RT: And he stuck with it!Andre: Barely! He quit the movie that day. He told me, just in the interview before this, that his kids talked him back into doing the movie. And because he almost got killed, he called Tiffany Haddish later that night to vent, and was like, Hey, Eric Andre put me in a stupid prank movie and he’s gonna get me killed. This guy took a knife out! I want to quit. So she starts dying laughing and calls me five minutes later and goes, You almost got Rel killed? And I was like, Yeah. And she goes, I wanna be in your movie. I live for that s t. So in a weird way, that got us Tiffany in the movie.Bad Trip is available on Netflix from March 26, 2021.On an Apple device? Whether we like it or not, we live in an age of reboots. From 80s franchises to 90s sitcoms, every property with a significant fan base is getting a new chance to tell more stories, so it was inevitable that we would eventually get a wave of reboots of beloved cartoons from decades past. But just because an old title is being resurrected doesn t mean it s necessarily going to be bad.If you grew up during the era of Saturday morning cartoons and after the era of toy-commercials-turned-TV-shows, then there s a big chance your favorite animated series is either getting a fresh start in the near future or has already been the recipient of a recent makeover. It s a good time to be an animation fan, so we ve prepared a list with the most exciting reboots of classic animated shows you should keep an eye out for and a few you can watch right now.AnimaniacsWhy It s Beloved: The original Animaniacs was unlike anything else in children s animation. It featured a variety show format that consisted of wildly unpredictable segments that could always surprise you, a large cast of memorable and funny characters, and references to everything from classic Hollywood movies to the big players in the industry. Oh, and did we mention the amazing songs? Animaniacs had a lot of them. How the Reboot is Different: Instead of reimagining the show, Hulu s Animaniacs reboot actually picks up right after the original series ended, with the Warner brothers Yakko and Wakko and the Warner sister Dot reawakening after 22 years to provide new stories and make fun of everything you can imagine. In other words, it retains the spirit of the original, but updates everything for a more modern audience. The first season, which premiered less than a month ago, is also Certified Fresh.Beavis and Butt-Head(Photo by Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Before MTV s Daria (see below) went on to inspire countless 90s kids to embrace sarcasm, Beavis and Butt-Head connected with couch potatoes everywhere. It was an unadulterated satirical look at Gen X, blending poignant social commentary and lowbrow humor in a way that captured an entire generation. The show was so successful that it spawned not only a spin-off, but also a feature film and a previous revival in 2011, and there s no sign of Beavis and Butt-Head stopping.How the Reboot is Different: Creator Mike Judge will be back to spearhead the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot, which will, of course, deal with meta-themes relatable to both new and die-hard fans.Clone HighWhy It s Beloved: People always love to look to the past to understand the present, so what if a cartoon actually depicted what important people from the past might do in the world today? Clone High had a phenomenal cast of historical figures and great voice actors, and it was a huge love letter to the teen drama boom of the time. Every trope of the genre is explored here, but because of its unique cast, the show was always able to put its own twist to things to hilarious effect. How the Reboot is Different: This reboot is being described as an updated version of the show that will explore high school and also coming-of-age tension through historical figures. Also, show creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) will return to write the pilot.Daria(Photo by ©MTV courtesy Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Sarcasm reigned in the 1990s, and no character embodied the sentiment of the decade as well as Daria, a high schooler with incendiary wit, razor-sharp insight, and a great cast of supporting characters surrounding her. Any teen who was going through rough time with student life could see themselves in Daria, a show that touched on feminism, social class, and even race. But those teens grew up, and now so has the show. How the Reboot is Different: This one is actually getting more of a spin-off than a reboot, which is somewhat appropriate, considering Daria itself was originally a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-Head. Comedy Central will be airing a new series called Jodie, following Daria character Jodie Landon now to be voiced by Tracee Ellis Ross as she enters the workplace after graduation from college. Jodie aspires to be for Gen Z what Daria was for Gen X. It s the first in a series of planned Daria spin-offs, and it will be the first adult animated show in decades to center on a Black woman (considering Tiffany Haddish s character on Tuca Bertie was technically a toucan).Darkwing DuckWhy It s Beloved: Before we got a Batman cartoon, we had Darkwing Duck, the best anatine superhero around. He had more gadgets than the Caped Crusader, a suave personality like James Bond, a sidekick who resembled Han Solo, and a theme song you d want as your ringtone. How the Reboot is Different: Avid fans will surely know that Darkwing Duck actually appeared very recently in the DuckTales reboot (see below for that), where the character is reimagined as an actor who decides to take on the role of a caped crusader after being inspired by his favorite movie character: Darkwing Duck. It is unclear at the moment whether the upcoming reboot  produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg  will follow this storyline or continue the original.Digimon AdventureWhy It s Beloved: Millions of kids around the world were first introduced to anime during the late 1990s, mostly thanks to two shows: Pokémon and Digimon: Digital Monsters. The latter in particular was also unique among cartoons for its serialized story that continued week by week, its flawed protagonists, and its surprisingly dark themes. It was a kids show, to be sure, but it also helped introduce those kids to more sophisticated storytelling. How the Reboot is Different: This year saw the return of Digimon with a new reboot that reimagines the original 1999 show as taking place in 2020, with all the new technology we have today. Additionally, the show does a great job of including a whole lot of mythology from latter seasons, resulting in a series that has enough surprises for fans old and new.DuckTalesWhy It s Beloved: The original DuckTales was a phenomenal adventure series that took viewers to fantastical and remote locations in stories that had fans of Indiana Jones hooked for 100 episodes. Plus, it has one of the best and catchiest theme songs around. How the Reboot is Different: For one, the Disney XD reboot has done a much better job of integrating Donald Duck into the narrative, which is a lot more serialized in this version. There is a lot of depth to the story now, and the characters are more fleshed out, finally giving Huey, Dewey, and Louie distinct personalities beyond their different-colored hats. The Ren Stimpy Show(Photo by Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: The Ren Stimpy Show was one of the original Nickelodeon toons, a show that was as beloved as it was controversial for its raunchy, gross-out humor and sometimes dark themes. The series was purely creator-driven, aimed at kids but with adult humor that any grown up could appreciate, and featured a cast of beloved and ultra weird characters. It has since become a cult classic. How the Reboot is Different: Comedy Central announced that they will air a new reboot of Ren Stimpy, albeit without the involvement of the show s controversial creator John Kricfalusi, who retired from the business after a number of sexual abuse allegations surfaced in 2018. As of now, we don t know who is returning or what the reboot will be about, but fans of the characters may be pleased to see them back again.RugratsWhy It s Beloved: The original Rugrats was a clever show with a simple concept: What if we do everything regular sitcoms do, except through the eyes of babies? The characters were likable and hilarious, creating a Peanuts for a whole new generation. The show was even able to play with mature themes like divorce and even the death of a parent, despite also being mostly about baby talk. It was also a trailblazer at times, being one of the very first animated series with an episode focused on a Jewish holiday. How the Reboot is Different: It was originally announced in 2018 that a new film will be made as a live-action/CGI hybrid, but those plans got pulled. Then, we learned just this October that a proper Rugrats series reboot would be coming in 2021 with, yes, 3D animated characters, and it will see the return of most of the cast and the original creators. With a world constantly changing, Rugrats is a show that s always been able to boil down what s going on around us through the eyes of the youngest of us.Tiny Toon Adventures(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Before we were introduced to Yakko, Wakko, and Dot in Animaniacs, Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, and Plucky Duck showed 90s kids that the Looney Tunes could still be hilarious and fresh after so many decades. The main characters were the young relatives of the famous Looney Tunes characters we know and love, and they grew to become just as beloved. How the Reboot is Different: Like Animaniacs, the upcoming reboot is more of a direct continuation, dubbed Tiny Toons Looniversity. The characters will now attend an esteemed institution of higher hijinks learning to become professional toons. That Steven Spielberg returns to produce the show should have fans of the original excited. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

This week for our fresh picks we have an atmospheric biopic about the author behind The Haunting of Hill House, a gory home invasion horror flick, and a dancer romance. In our Spotlight section, we call back to the recent Certified Fresh first feature from director Tayarisha Poe.Streaming This Weekend
David Lowery’s The Green Knight has earned a solidly Fresh Tomatometer score thanks to largely positive reviews and its position as theatrical counter-programming against the glut of big-budget summer blockbusters hitting theaters as of late. It’s a reimagining of the late 14th-century poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” which tells one of the most well-known stories in Arthurian legend canon – the tale of Sir Gawain, who accepts a terrifying challenge from a stranger on Christmas, and the quest he must embark on one year later. It was a bold choice for Lowery to adapt a 700-year-old chivalric romance for the 21st century, and one that required a number of changes so that a story so profoundly rooted in the morality and literary style of the Middle Ages resonated with a modern audience. Here are five ways he changed the original Arthurian epic to do just that… and one important way he kept the medieval story intact. The Green Knight Gets Wild(Photo by © A24)In Lowery’s vision of Arthurian legend, the Green Knight is a primal supernatural entity, one whose ties to the natural world are right in his design. He is the Green Man of ancient myth come to life with his bark face accented by a beard made of curling twigs. Neither fully man nor tree, he harkens back to an older, pagan time when the lines between the natural world and the supernatural were far more blurred. Even the offshoot “branches” that crown his head vaguely evoke the horns of Cernunnos, the Celtic Horned God and lord of wild things. It’s deliberate character design meant to evoke the ancient unease of humanity realizing it doesn’t have full control of the world, and it’s a smart decision on Lowery’s part. The design of the Green Knight in the original poem is a less wild thing; the antagonist is more nobleman who just happens to be green. When Arthur’s court meets him, he’s kitted out in forest green finery, with emeralds and jewels encrusting his ax and bridle, his fine-spun clothes trimmed with silk and ermine. It was a striking image, one that made an impression in the late 14th century, but one that today would fail to impress modern moviegoers who have seen it all. By stripping the sense of rich civility from the Green Knight, Lowery draws out the inherent otherness of the character and tinges it with horror.Mother Knows Best: Recasting Morgan le Fay and Enriching Her Motivation(Photo by © A24)When the original poem was written, it was during a time in the Middle Ages in which Morgan le Fay’s role in Arthurian legend was transitioning from benevolent protector to villain. As patriarchal Christian morality took root and began heavily influencing writing of the era, Morgan (Arthur’s half-sibling), previously an amalgam of earlier revered, magical female Celtic deities, was recast as a malevolent sorceress of evil intent. Her role was often to play the antagonist in the mythology, intent on causing chaos in her half-brother’s court. Her motivations for summoning the Green Knight and arranging the challenge in the original poem were fittingly petty: hoping Arthur would take up the challenge, Morgan merely wanted to frighten Guinevere in a bit of spite. Gawain taking up the challenge instead was coincidental. That’s a flimsy and wildly outdated premise to build a story around in modern times. Lowery changed Morgan’s connection to Gawain and, in doing so, changed her motivation. By making Morgan Gawain’s mother in the film, her game, while harsh, made much more sense. A petty, inexplicably cruel woman sending a man to his potential death because she’s miffed at another woman is nonsensical and regressive; but a powerful woman secretly pushing her son to find his greatness is something one can understand, if not necessarily agree with.Sir Gawain: Peak Millennial(Photo by © A24)As with so many things in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” what makes perfect sense in a medieval poem doesn’t translate so well to the big screen in 2021. This is arguably never truer than with Gawain himself. Dev Patel’s portrayal of Gawain is vastly different than the Gawain of the poem; while he’s less likable, he’s also more relatable.Poem Gawain was not so much a character in his own right, but a noble archetype and morality tale in one. He was meant to be the chivalric ideal and had the depiction to match. In fact, Gawain held himself to such a high standard in the poem that his test was to learn he was human and fallible, and that perfection is something that only God himself can achieve. Gawain is pious and pure, humble and extraordinarily chaste, courageous and benevolent to all he meets. Thus, Lowery was presented with the Captain America problem: how does one make a character so inherently perfect interesting? Marvel achieved it not by changing Captain America, but by changing the world around him. Lowery achieved it by doing the opposite: keeping the world the same but changing Gawain. His Gawain is far more flawed than the version in the poem, an entitled wastrel who is squandering his potential in sex and drink. Purity and chastity are not in movie Gawain’s nature and his test, in many ways, is the opposite of the test presented in the source. Poem Gawain had to learn that even great knights can wobble; movie Gawain had to see if he could even be great at all.As a heroic ideal, The Green Knight’s protagonist is quite lacking, but as a character whose struggle makes sense for moviegoers today, he’s incredibly timely.Making New Frenemies(Photo by © A24)“Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is a true hero’s journey, an epic quest of man vs. nature, but moreover, of man vs. himself. There are only a handful of characters in the original poem and Gawain spends large chunks of the story by himself. For the purposes of depicting the Christ-like trials of a noble knight in a chivalric romance, it works; for a modern movie adaptation, however, it makes for an awfully boring on-screen story.Lowery wisely recognizes this and addresses it by adding three characters who seamlessly blend into the story while playing key roles in Gawain’s growth. Essel (Alicia Vikander) is the earthly temptation he must set aside to fully devote himself to his quest; the Scavenger (Barry Keoghan) is meant to shatter the naiveté and sheltered worldview Gawain holds; Winifred (Erin Kellyman) presents Gawain with a test of his altruism and chivalry. Each brings something essential that Gawain must learn in order to evolve, and their use provides a blueprint for how to add original characters to Arthurian adaptations that still feel as vital and necessary to the story as any characters in the old mythology.Bye, Bye to The Wild – and Potentially Slow – Hunt (Photo by © A24)Adapting an older story requires an insightful balance of knowing what to keep and what to cut: Too slavishly devote yourself to the original source and you risk dragging the story down with unnecessary scenes; deviate too far and you risk undermining the very aspects that made the original story so beloved in the first place. While Lowery certainly added to the story, he also excised certain parts with a decisive hand. The most impactful edit was Lowery’s compression of the poem’s lengthily told three-day hunting scene, during which readers follow Lord Bertilak as he rides out each day to hunt, with the third and final day offering a parallel narrative with Bertilak chasing a wily and evasive fox as Gawain tries to evade Lady Bertilak’s aggressive advances back at the castle. It’s a great bit of symbolism, but an unnecessary part of the story that would have further dragged down the already slow-burn movie.Condensing it kept the crux of Gawain’s quandary intact in the film while not killing the momentum that was building up heading into the third act.…And What Lowery Smartly Chose NOT To Change(Photo by © A24)Though Lowery took plenty of liberties with the original poem, The Green Knight remains true to the spirit of its source. So many layers are packed into “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” but what truly holds it up are two tentpole themes that remain searingly relevant: the duality of the pagan natural world vs. ordered Christianity, and the core story of a knight discovering the man he truly is. Remove or change other elements and the story still largely stands on its own, but remove those two foundational pillars and it comes crashing down.Lowery’s instincts for what to change and what to leave intact served him well, and the result is the old, archetypal story told in a fresh new way. One that feels urgent and modern, and yet true to its source. After Hollywood’s recent, multiple failed attempts to bring more Arthurian stories to the big screen, it might look to The Green Knight for an example of how to make Camelot and its endless well of stories relevant again. The Green Knight is in theaters now. On an Apple device? 亚博在线登录网页版 (Photo by Warner Bros.)All James Wan Movies, Ranked by TomatometerDirector James Wan and creative partner Leigh Whannell broke into the industry with their 2003 short Saw, which they remade a year later as a feature-length Lionsgate film. Introducing horror icon Jigsaw (the moral and vengeful escape-room architect with lots of time on his hands, played with aplomb by Tobin Bell), Saw s high-concept, extreme-gore thrills found its audience of young, increasingly desensitized viewers. Wan and Whannell branched out early from Saw, remaining on the franchise as executive producers.Dead Silence and Death Sentence came and went before Wan struck upon on more franchise horror gold with Insidious. Wan would direct the first two films, as Whannell made his directorial debut on Chapter 3 (and from there would climb to Upgrade and The Invisible Man). After Insidious for Wan: Directing horror opus The Conjuring, a blockbuster 1970s-style scarefest, reminiscent of The Omen and The Exorcist.Wan was given the keys to the Fast Furious series, with Furious 7 pulling off the action, the heists, and the proper, emotional family tribute to star Paul Walker, who died late in production. F7 remains the best-reviewed and highest-grossing Furious of the franchise. The Conjuring 2 came pretty close to capturing the magic of the first, and Wan s sojourn into the DC Extended Universe yielded Aquaman, the first DCEU movie to top billion worldwide.Wan is back again to his smaller-scale horror roots with Malignant. To mark the occasion, we re ranking all James Wan movies by Tomatometer!
